Dinosaur species discovered in Montana by amateur

BILLINGS, Mont. – A novice fossil collector’s lucky find in a remote Montana badlands more than a decade ago has turned out to be a new kind of spectacularly-horned dinosaur, researchers announced Wednesday.

The bones unearthed near Winifred, Montana represent a previously-unknown species of dinosaur that lived 76 million years ago.

It’s scientific name is Spiclypeus shipporum but it’s been nicknamed “Judith,” after the Judith River rock formation where it was found in 2005 by retired nuclear physicist Bill Shipp.

Canadian Museum of Nature paleontologist Jordan Mallon said Judith is closely-related to the well-known Triceratops. Both had horned

faces and elaborate head frills, although Judith’s horns stick out sideway instead of over the eyes. Like Triceratops, Judith was a plant-eater, approximately 15-feet long and weighing up to four tons, Mallon said.

Shipp told The Associated Press that he stumbled across what turned out to be Judith’s femur bone in 2005.

He had hired an amateur paleontologist to give him an introduction to fossil hunting on a ranch Shipp owned near the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. As Shipp worked his way around an eroded rocky outcropping on the property, he saw a piece of bone sticking several inches out of the ground.

“I found it accidentally on purpose,” Shipp said. “I was actually looking for dinosaur bones, but with no expectation of actually finding any.”

Sycamore’s 2016 Pumpkin Fest to be a ‘Parade of Pumpkins’

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – This year, first-grader Camryn Knox will get to relive her favorite part of Pumpkin Fest each day of the celebration, with the 2016 theme: Parade of Pumpkins.

Although Camryn, a 7-year-old North Grove Elementary student, was pretty sure she was going to win the Pumpkin Fest theme contest, she hadn’t expected to hear her name called out over a microphone at the reveal Wednesday.

“I was happy, and I was surprised, too,” she said.

Close contenders were honorable mentions “Pumpkins Around Town,” submitted by third-grade South Prairie Elementary student, Emma Horton, and “The Land of Pumpkins,” from West Elementary kindergartner, Adrian Davila.

Students from Sycamore School District 427, St. Mary’s School in Sycamore, and Cornerstone Christian Academy submitted a total of 204 applications for the festival’s theme, committee President Jerry Malmassari said.

Theme Director Jennifer Diehl narrowed down the submissions to 24 semifinalists, only three of which would earn the students a spot in the Pumpkin Fest parade.

“We take a look at the theme and the reasoning behind it,” Diehl said.

“All of the children are given a space on the entry form to tell us why they chose that theme. And so sometimes just the thought process – you can see where they’ve written and erased and written and erased. Some of them go beyond and tell you to look on the back.”

Knox’s winning idea just happened to be the first that came to mind, her mom, Michelle Knox, said.

“We were just sitting at the table, and I found the sheet. I had asked her an idea, and that’s what she came up with,” Knox said.

Camryn received a $50 check, a framed certificate of appreciation, a commemorative set of postcards, and a copy of Tom Oestreicher’s “Mr. Pumpkin & the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival: A 50 Year History.”

North Grove Elementary School will also receive a $100 check, to be used for student enrichment, Diehl said.

Each of the 24 semifinalists was recognized at Wednesday’s reveal and invited to stand alongside the festival’s committee members, who were clad in orange vests, decorated with pumpkin ribbons and pins.

Among some of submitted possible themes were: “pumpkin patch pets,” “fancy pumpkins,” “authors on pumpkins” and “pumpkins over the great blue yonder.”

“It’s just amazing to see all the imagination and what the kids have to say about it,” Diehl said.

This year’s Pumpkin Fest will be Oct. 26 through 30.

browland@shawmedia.com GENOA – Before proposing to shutter three of the district’s five schools at a community meeting this week, Genoa-Kingston School District 424’s board met several times over a period of months to discuss a variety of proposals that would address the district’s declining enrollment and longterm budget deficit.

About 80 people attended Tuesday’s community meeting and many asked questions about how the proposal would affect students in the district.

Superintendent Joe Burgess said the meeting was designed to gauge public opinion about how to proceed.

“There were lots of questions about the district’s finances,” he said.

The meeting, he said, showed “the community is willing to come out and talk.”

Afterward, about 15 people signed up to serve on a committee that would help guide future board decisions.

One of the plans under consideration is closing Kingston Elementary School, Davenport Elementary School and Genoa-Kingston Middle School and turning the district’s other two schools into academic centers. The district would renovate Genoa-Kingston High School to accommodate students in grades seven through 12 and renovate Genoa Elementary School to accommodate kindergarten through sixth-grade students, Burgess said.

Under that plan, seventh- and eighth-grade students would be in a separate wing of the high school, Burgess told the board in March.

Renovations are expected to cost less than $15 million, and wouldn’t require the board to seek a voter-approved tax referendum, according to minutes from its March 15 meeting.

At that meeting, Burgess said, “The thought of restructuring our district at a tax savings to our community, and knowing as a district we are not going to fold up and die, but explode with opportunities for our students and our community is exciting,” meeting minutes show.

Burgess said Wednesday that closing the three schools would save the district about $250,000 to $350,000 a building a year.

He said that consolidating to two academic centers was just one option that had been discussed and that no decision had been made about how to proceed. Feedback from Wednesday’s community meeting would be presented to the board at its next meeting, May 24, Burgess said.

Other options include doing nothing or closing one building at a time, Burgess said. If the district fails to restructure, property owners could see their tax rate increase significantly to cover balloon payments on money the district borrowed to build the existing high school.

In February, the board also talked about the possibility of closing Kingston Elementary School, Davenport Elementary School, Genoa-Kingston Middle School and building a new campus for kindergarten through eighth-grade students, meeting minutes show.

Burgess said the district’s enrollment has declined by about 250 students in the past five to six years – a drop of more than 10 percent. Meeting minutes show there are about 16 empty classrooms spread among the K-through-eight buildings.

Burgess said the board is concerned about what would happen to the three schools, if it decides to move forward with that proposal. He the said buildings could be sold, donated, put up for auction or retained.

“The board is concerned about empty buildings,” he said.

At a February board meeting, Burgess suggested that some of the shuttered buildings could be used by municipal governments and the park district. One building “is in a prime location and could be sold for retail development,” according to the minutes. The buildings weren’t identified.

Board President Paul Kruse couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday. Kingston Village President Jim Baenziger also couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday.

At a meeting in April, board member Kristin Brynteson said, “It is vital to be innovative in creating a positive outcome from a bad situation,” minutes show.

Ella Wilhelmina (Duhai) Boldt, 92, passed peacefully May 17, 2016. She was born Sept.

16, 1923 in Chicago to Peter and Katherine (Kauk) Duhai. She was united in marriage to Orman Boldt on Aug. 25, 1945, at St. John’s Evangelical Church in Naperville, IL. They spent the next 63 years together before his passing in 2009.

Before beginning her life journey with Orman as his partner in farming, she worked at Kroehler Furniture Co. She was also a cook’s assistant at Valley View School for a number of years.

She was active in the community as a 4-H leader for 26 years in DeKalb and Will County.

Ella and Orman were awarded Citizens of the Year by the Waterman Business Association where they were members.

She was a very active member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Naperville with the Walther League youth group.

After moving to Waterman, she became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and taught Sunday school for many years as well as being involved in various other church activities.

Ella was known for her cooking and baking skills, especially her apple pie slices. Many benefited from her crocheting skills with beautiful afghans.

She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother to Margaret (Robert) McDonald Sr, Kenneth (Donna) Boldt, and Lawrence (Karla) Boldt all of Waterman. Grandchildren, Tammy McDonald, Chicago, Robert (Jennifer) McDonald, Gilberts, Christopher (Irma) Boldt, Aurora, Carrie (Marcos) Cruz, DeKalb, Kelly (Gary) Krajec, Yorkville, and Megan Boldt.

Great-grandchildren, Alexis, Elizabeth, and Antonio Cruz, Audrey, Bryce, and Cayden McDonald, Ava, and Aiden Boldt.

She is survived by her sisters, Katherine Pantke, Tucson, AZ, Mary Pfaff, Yorkville, Ann Calaway, Grand Marsh, WI, Laura Calaway, Peoria, and Josie (Paul) Strong, Yorkville; sisters-in-law, Norma Duhai, Naperville, Pat Duhai, Monroe, WI, and Judy Duhai, Westmont; as well as many nieces and nephews.

County Board issues advisory resolution opposing school sales tax RHONDA GILLESPIE

rgillespie@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The DeKalb County Board signaled Wednesday that it doesn’t want to see local schools impose a 1 percent sales tax increase, adopting a resolution that calls for county public school districts to try to better understand the impact the tax could have.

Five DeKalb County school districts, representing the majority of public school children, want to put a referendum before voters to add 1 percentage point to the county’s sales tax rate in an effort to raise millions of

dollars for capital projects and bond payments.

Several County Board members give the idea a thumbs-down.

“Sales tax at the local level has traditionally been a source of funding that is reserved for municipalities and counties as a way for them to meet their mandates for services for the community, while school districts have traditionally been funded via local property tax revenues and state funding,” reads a portion of the resolution the County Board adopted.

trict 427, said the resolution is meant to be an advisory for the school districts.

“We want to be very careful. It’s a dangerous territory when you start telling other government bodies what to do,” Jones said. “But we wanted to make sure everybody (school districts) was dealing with the correct facts and make sure that everybody understands some of the ramifications we feel would happen.”

Among them, according to the resolution, low-income residents would end up paying more of their income in sales taxes. County businesses could lose revenue as people opt to go to nearby counties where the sales tax rate

may be lower.

Also, County Board officials are concerned that the special sales tax increase could jeopardize airline fuel sales and mean a loss of up to $3 million in county revenue.

Jeff Whelan, R-District 10, added that the additional 1 percent could hamper efforts to attract businesses through the enterprise zone the county was awarded.

But as they adopted the resolution – with one “nay” from John Frieders, R-District 12 – County Board members reiterated that the measure is merely advisory. They call on the state to adequately fund public schools.

DeKALB – A driver was airlifted to Rockford Memorial Hospital after two semitrailers crashed and caused traffic going west on Interstate 88 toward DeKalb to shut down Wednesday night.

The DeKalb Fire Department and Illinois State Police received a call about 6:47 p.m. of one semitrailer rear-ending another on I-88 just past the exit off Annie Glidden Road, DeKalb Deputy Fire Chief James Zarek said.

After some time, authorities extricated the driver of the rear semitrailer.

A React helicopter was immediately called to the scene and flew the driver to the hospital about 8 p.m., while the second driver was evaluated by medics.

“Because of the extent of the extrication and the debris on the roadway, the entire westbound lanes of I-88 were shut down,” Zarek said.

It was unclear whether the second driver would require medical attention, Zarek said.

DeKALB – A semitrailer driver faces charges for leaving the scene of an accident after colliding with a school bus Wednesday afternoon.

No one was injured in the incident, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called for a hit-and-run accident on the Interstate 88 exit ramp at Peace Road about 2 p.m. Wednesday.

A school bus was stopped at the traffic light waiting to turn right. The semitrailer went around the bus and turned north onto Peace Road, hitting the bus as it turned, according to the news release.

The truck didn’t stop. Deputies later found the truck at the Target Distribution Center in DeKalb, the release said.

Thomas E. Harrell, 48, of the 1800 block of Elm Street, Rockford, was cited for improper turn and leaving the scene of an accident, the release said.

Two adults were on the bus at the time of the incident, according to the release.

SYCAMORE – A two-vehicle collision on Peace Road left two vehicles badly damaged but caused no serious injuries, Sycamore police said.

The crash occurred on Peace Road where it intersects with Hathaway Drive about 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said a red Kia minivan was headed west on Hathaway and crossing Peace when it collided with a gray Honda coupe that was northbound on Peace.

The front end of the Kia struck the Honda on the front passenger side.

The impact caused the Honda to veer across the southbound lanes of Peace, coming to rest in the parking lot of the Quality Inn, 1475 Peace Road.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene, but neither driver had to be taken to the hospital, police said.

The driver of the Kia, Nathan A. Combes, 21, of Malta, was cited in connection with the crash, police said.

Police find $1M of heroin in traffic stop of Chicago man

STRATFORD, Conn. – Connecticut State Police troopers have seized about 28 pounds of heroin worth an estimated $1 million after pulling over a Chicago man.

A state police spokeswoman said troopers were conducting traffic enforcement on Route 15 in Stratford on Tuesday when they pulled over a car for a moving violation.

After the troopers learned that narcotics might be in the vehicle, a drug-sniffing dog was called in to assist in the search and found the packaged heroin.

WASHINGTON – The United States sees evidence of hackers, possibly working for foreign governments, snooping on the presidential candidates, the nation’s intelligence chief said Wednesday. Government officials are assisting the campaigns to tighten security as the race for the White House intensifies.

The activity follows the pattern set in the last two presidential elections. Hacking was rampant in 2008, according to U.S. intelligence officials, and both President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney were targets of Chinese cyberattacks four years later. Nevertheless, cyber experts say Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton’s campaign networks aren’t secure enough to eliminate the risk.

“We’ve already had some indications” of hacking, James Clapper, director of national intelligence, said Wednesday at the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington. He said the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security were helping educate the campaigns.

Of the attacks, Clapper predicted, “we’ll probably have more.”

The revelation comes after Clapper’s office released a document this month saying foreign intelligence services tracked the 2008 presidential election cycle “like no other.” The document was in a slide show used to warn incoming Obama administration officials that their new jobs could make them prey for spies.

Eight years ago, foreign intelligence services “met with campaign contacts and staff, used human source networks for policy insights, exploited technology to get otherwise sensitive data, engaged in perception management to influence policy,” it said. “This exceeded traditional lobbying and public diplomacy.”

Jonathan Lampe with InfoSec Institute, a private information security company in Chicago, said security hasn’t improved significantly since then.

In October, he evaluated the security of 16 candidates’ websites and wrote a pair of reports. Using the reconnaissance skills of a casual hacker, Lampe pulled full lists of site user names and technologies used on most sites. In some cases, he discovered which directories were accessible from the Internet and which weren’t. He learned the software products Clinton’s campaign used from a job posting soliciting a computer-wise staffer.

“Everybody was sitting with their pants down and by the time we looked at the sites in March, everybody had made fixes,” he said.

But countries are probably still snooping, he said: “The sites were open enough back in October that anyone who grabbed the information then and wanted to use it, could still use it now.”

Some threats are publicly known.

New rule extends overtime to millions

COLUMBUS, Ohio – More than 4 million U.S. workers will become newly eligible for overtime pay under rules issued Wednesday by the Obama administration.

The rule seeks to bolster overtime protections that have been eroded in recent decades by inflation. A diminishing proportion of workers have benefited from overtime regulations, which date to the 1930s and require employers to pay 1½ times a worker’s wage for work that exceeds 40 hours a week.

Vice President Joe Biden announced the changes at Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams in Columbus, Ohio.

Being overworked and underpaid is preventing middle-class Americans from improving themselves and from spending time enjoying their lives and families, Biden said.

“You’re deprived of your dignity when you know you’re working much, much harder and much, much stronger than you’re getting compensated for,” he said.

In the fast-food and retail industries in particular, many employees are deemed managers, work long hours but are paid a flat salary that barely exceeds the income of the hourly workers they supervise who receive overtime pay.

Under the new rules, released in

draft form last summer, the annual salary threshold at which companies can deny overtime pay will be doubled from $23,660 to nearly $47,500. That would make 4.2 million more salaried workers eligible for overtime pay. Hourly workers would continue to be mostly guaranteed overtime.

The White House estimates that the rule change will raise pay by $1.2 billion a year over the next decade. Some employers, though, might choose to reduce their employees’ additional hours to avoid paying overtime, thereby making the workers’ schedules more consistent.

“Either way, the worker wins,” Biden told reporters Tuesday.

Business groups, however, argued that the changes will increase paperwork and scheduling burdens for small companies and force many businesses to convert salaried workers to hourly ones to more closely track working time.

Many employees will see that as a step down, they said.

“With the stroke of a pen, the Labor Department is demoting millions of workers,” David French, a senior vice president for the National Retail Federation, said. “Most of the people impacted by this change will not see any additional pay.”

The overtime threshold was last updated in 2004 and now covers only 7 percent of full-time salaried workers, administration officials said – down from 62 percent in 1975.

Not a comic question – should feds run more?

Here’s something to ponder if you find yourself one of the countless air travelers who will waste hours waiting in security lines at America’s airports this summer: How many more aspects of public life should the federal government be asked to run?

The federal government took over airport security from private contractors in the aftermath of the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and they haven’t done a very good job at it.

In 2012, the federal Transportation Security Agency was criticized after it was found that passengers had carried loaded guns through security and onto planes.

In 2015, the TSA’s acting director was reassigned after banned items got past screeners in 67 out of 70 tests conducted at airports around the country.

So now the agency has presumably traded one type of ineffectiveness for another.

The TSA’s response to the situation: Be patient.

On Friday, federal Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson announced he had a 10-point plan to cut down on wait times, then told America that during the peak summer travel season, things would not get better.

Turns out that federal officials and Congress thought that the TSA PreCheck program would cut down on the need for security screeners. That assumption has proved false, perhaps in part because of ineffective marketing, and now the flying public is suffering.

Indeed, on Sunday, security lines were so long that several people had to spend the night on cots at O’Hare Airport after hundreds of would-be travelers missed their flights.

The traveling public has no recourse other than to post photos and videos on social media.

Air carriers and their leaders are frustrated at the situation, and even local government officials such as Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel have called for the feds to fix the situation.

If this is the way the federal government handles airport security, why should we trust them to be more involved in any other aspects of our daily life?

Why should we want the federal bureaucracy more involved in our health care system?

How is it a good idea to give the federal government a larger role in higher education?

There’s little doubt that these areas would become less responsive and less effective with big government in charge, just as we’re seeing with airport security now.

Assumptions will be made by people far removed from the front lines of what is happening.

When those assumptions prove wrong, it is the regular people who will suffer.

It’s one thing to spend a few hours in a security line, or even to miss a flight.

What about being denied entry to a program of study, or being forced to wait months for a needed medical procedure?

That would be even less acceptable, and yet with the federal government running these services, there’s little doubt it would happen.

To the Editor: Some people have pooh-poohed my theory that the moon has anything to do with our inability to sleep. It has been suggested that worry or pain, and too much caffeine may result in sleep deprivation.

We can all check our sleep patterns and see if there is any validity to what I believe about the subject during our next full moon, Saturday.

I wonder what early man must have thought about that huge orb when it went through its various phases.

We have so much information available to us and yet it’s still a fascinating and mysterious subject.

Some planets have more than one moon (as we do here on earth).

Since July 1969 when man first walked on the moon, we have learned a lot more than we used to know when I went to school.

I learned from my research we have an internal clock that synchronizes with the moon and may be driven by lunar cycles. So it’s not my imagination that I don’t sleep well then.

I do not bay at the moon like a werewolf, but I feel restless during a full moon. My son said his dog is often

restless then also. Do farmers notice this with cattle?

A nurse, working in a maternity ward, told me that there are more births during a full moon than any other time.

The moon affects the tides, why not the water encased baby in the womb?

Thirty-three healthy volunteers, between ages 20 and 74, sleeping under strictly controlled conditions in a window-less laboratory were studied in Switzerland for 31⁄2 days.

They had no way of seeing the moon.

It was found there was a 20-minute reduction of total sleep time.

Another interesting result of the study was people sleeping in the lab nearer to the day of a full moon also had lower evening levels of the hormone, melatonin.

This is important to circadian rhythm and drives the body’s cycles of day and night, thus it affects wakefulness and sleep.

As for me, I’m taking a pain pill, drink no coffee at dinner, and plan not to worry and see how I sleep May 21, during this full moon.

pect used a gun to commandeer other vehicles, scared residents out of their wits and, eventually, shot and injured a woman on a highway.

Moments after that last incident, the suspect was captured after being shot by a Kansas City Police Department officer who – coincidentally – had been on that city’s force for nine years, the same amount of time Lancaster was on the job in Kansas City.

That Kansas City officer deserves the community’s thanks in preventing even further mayhem at the hands of the armed suspect.

The killing of detective Lancaster will lead to more charges and more prison time for a convicted suspect.

But none of that will bring Lancaster back to live out the rest of his life with his family. His death is a sobering reminder to all of us that the overwhelming number of officers in the Kansas City area go to work for the right reasons. They want to create safer communities for the people who live here.

And yet, this region suffers far too many deaths and injuries caused by guns in the hands of people who shouldn’t have them.

They include criminals such as the suspect, of course, but also far too many residents who don’t know how to use firearms and others who won’t properly lock up their guns so they are harder to steal.

This area and this country are awash in firearms for many reasons.

America’s gun manufacturers have shown they will do anything to pump up their sales to make a profit.

The National Rifle Association and other gun lovers have twisted the Second Amendment into an excuse for arming far too many people.

And lawmakers in Kansas and Missouri are recklessly making it even easier to carry loaded weapons, with no training, almost anyplace and anytime.

If there is any solace in the death of a local police officer – any solace at all – it is that we have not seen one killed

in the line of duty in this region since 2001. (A Riverside officer was struck by lightning in 2011 while on tornado disaster response duty in Joplin, Mo.) Yet that statement of fact misses the point that officers go to work every day and can be shot, beaten or otherwise injured while doing a job that so few in our society are qualified to do.

Or would do.

Police officers every day deal responsibly with people who are speeding, trespassing or taking part in other nonviolent acts.

But these officers also handle far more dangerous situations involving hardened criminals who have no concern for the lives of others.

Detective Brad Lancaster encountered one of those individuals on May 9. Because of that, he will not return to his family. He will never work again with his fellow officers.

But he should always be remembered for the price he paid as a public servant of this community.

A tale about the culture war that Obama didn’t have to wage Surely the Obama administration could find a way to provide contraception to women without involving a group of Catholic nuns.

This has been the refrain of the administration’s critics since 2012, when it announced that most employers would have to offer health coverage that included contraceptives. The Supreme Court has just unanimously made the same point as the critics, if in softer language.

It vacated a lower-court ruling that would have forced the Little Sisters of the Poor, which runs nursing homes for low-income elderly, to comply with a version of the administration’s contraceptive mandate.

The court instructed lower courts to hear further arguments from the parties on how to provide contraception to women while respecting the employers’ religious freedom.

The court stopped short of saying the administration had violated the nuns’ rights under the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Perhaps it is split 4 to 4 on that question. The decision to sidestep it, however, underscores how unnecessary it was to divide the justices, or voters, over contraception.

America had managed to get through the vast majority of its

VIEWS Ramesh Ponnuru history without any contraceptive mandate. President Barack Obama’s first term, all of which took place before the implementation of the directive, was not marked by a national crisis of access to birth control.

Access was so far from being a major problem that even the highly liberal Congress of 2009-2010 enacted no explicit mandate.

It did, however, enact Obamacare, which included a provision giving the secretary of Health and Human Services the power to set a list of health benefits for women that most employers would have to cover.

The administration used the provision to generate the contraceptive mandate.

By itself, this order would have led to some grumbling – a few op-eds from libertarians and social conservatives, a couple of floor speeches in Congress.

But it would have led to no more than that if the mandate had included an exemption for employers with religious objections to covering the

mandated benefits.

The administration, however, allowed only a very narrow religious exemption, one that applied to churches but not to religious charities such as the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Eventually the administration decided it would grant these religious groups an “accommodation.”

The nuns would have to sign a form giving the government access to their insurance network in order to facilitate the contraceptive coverage they oppose. If they refused, they would pay steep fines.

Supporters of the mandate treated this deal as generous: The nuns would hardly have to be involved at all. The nuns disagreed: The government was still forcing them to do something they oppose – facilitate contraception.

They believed that signing the form would violate their consciences, even if the government’s lawyers argued that they shouldn’t feel that way.

Some judges sided with those administration lawyers.

The Supreme Court took a wiser course this week.

And not for the first time. In 2014, a split court ruled that the Hobby Lobby chain could refuse to cover

certain contraceptives to which its evangelical Christian owners objected.

When the decision came down, supporters of the administration made the consequences sound pretty dire. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s dissent conjured up the specter that companies run by Jehovah’s Witnesses would refuse to cover blood transfusions.

The majority opinion drily noted that it had no evidence of any company ever adopting that policy. Nor have employers rushed to file cases seeking such religious exemptions.

The slippery-slope argument is even sillier in the Little Sisters case. For most of the organization’s existence, nobody questioned its right to exclude coverage for birth control.

If that right continues, its impact on Americans’ contraceptive use will be undetectable.

It makes you wonder why the Obama administration thought this entirely avoidable culture-war fight was worth starting in the first place.

Kansas City, Kansas, police detective Brad Lancaster made the ultimate sacrifice May 9 while protecting this community.

Lancaster was shot and killed by a person who should not have had a gun in his hands.

The detective, who was 39, leaves behind a wife and two children.

Lancaster was an Air Force veteran who worked for the Platte County (Mo.) Sheriff’s Office and at the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department for the last nine years.

The suspect – mentioned by name only once in this editorial as Curtis Ayers – has been in trouble with the law for years.

He has been prosecuted for a string of criminal behavior, including domestic battery, child abandonment, fleeing police and making a terroristic threat.

He had been released on parole only four months ago from the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Mata overjoyed about 1st trip to state meet

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – On her first attempt of the Class 3A Huntley Sectional, DeKalb senior Cory Mata launched the discus 11-feet beyond her previous personal best.

When she found out the throw – 134 feet, 7 inches – qualified her for the Class 3A Girls Track and Field State Championships, she couldn’t help but get emotional.

“I just bawled my eyes out. I cried so much. I was so excited,” said Mata, who easily won the sectional. “To be sectional champ was not on the to-do list that day – it really wasn’t. It felt amazing. It just felt so good.”

Mata joins a long list of area athletes who will participate in the three-day girls state meet this week at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

The Barbs are bringing four individuals and two relays to the Class 3A meet, which includes Mata in the discus, freshman Christina Ryzhov (1,600-meter run), sophomore Jasmine Kemp (high jump) and senior Savannah Long (200 dash, 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles.)

Long has the fastest seeded time in the 300-meter hurdles (44.66 seconds) in Class 3A. The Barbs, who won the sectional title for the first time in school history, are also sending the 400 relay and the 800 relay.

Kaneland, which won the Class 2A Rochelle Sectional, is sending all four relays along with junior Sydney Davidson (pole vault), junior Lexie Guerra (pole vault), junior Maddie Keifer (high jump, triple jump), junior Nicole Sreenan (100 dash, 400 dash), senior Noelle Espino (800 run), junior Becca Richtman (800) and senior Allie Heinzer (200 dash).

Sreenan has the fastest seeded time in the 100 dash (12.23) and the third fastest in the 400 (56.66).

Genoa-Kingston senior Carly Fischer is seeded 11th in the discus for Class 2A (117-1) and Sycamore senior Alyssa Feuerbach is right behind her at 13th (116-2).

“Distancewise, I hope to make it at least in the 120s,” Fischer said. “My goal for the season was to just make it up on the podium at state.”

In Class 1A, Hinckley-Big Rock junior Audrey Harrod has the top time in the 800 (2:17.94) and is 12th in the 400 (1:01.48). The Royals are also sending Courtney Carls in the triple jump.

Despite being a freshman, Ryzhov is coming off a hot stretch in which she took second at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Meet and won the Huntley Sectional with a time of 5:15.53.

“I was feeling really confident be-

cause I was fresh,” said Ryzhov, who did not race in the 3,200 run earlier in the meet. “The girls went out really fast, but by the second lap, I was at the front pack and the third lap I went off and kept the lead after that.”

Ryzhov came to DeKalb already as a decorated distance runner. While at Clinton Rosette Middle School, she won back-to-back state championships in cross country in Class 2A for the IESA. “We knew coming in that she was going to be pretty special,” DeKalb coach Tywon Green said.

As for Mata, who placed fifth in the sectional meet last season, it has been a season in which she set the school record in the discus – and has routinely broken her own top mark. Coming into the sectional meet with the second best seeded mark, she ended up winning by more than 12 feet with her throw of 134-7.

“I had never had pressure before,” Mata said. “Usually, you just go to the meet and do whatever. I was ranked second and was expected to do good – that was scary for me. Now I’ve made it to the point where I’m happy. I made it to state.”

Vickers laughed that many of the residents have the schedules of their favorite teams posted on the wall of their room and community life coordinator Lisa Benford said there is a buzz around the nursing center in the moments before the team comes.

“You see the residents come alive

when the (NIU baseball team) is here,” Benford said. “They just come alive. It’s very good for them to have that interaction.”

The players have spent the year working on community service that was important to them, but this week will feature an issue that is relevant to Kunigonis.

In the final week of the regular season for the Mid-American Conference, each team in the league will wear white sweatbands that highlight the charity of Pete Frates, a former Boston College player who has been stricken with ALS, and to bring awareness to the disease. Kunigonis used to be an assistant coach under Pete Hughes while they were at Virginia Tech and Hughes, who previously coached Frates at Boston College, eventually introduced Kunigonis to the former Eagles player.

The 31-year-old Frates’ helped introduce the popular ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and has a charity – Frate Train – that raises money and awareness for the disease.

“I had zero connection to ALS before I met Pete Hughes,” said Kunigonis, who went to the MAC with the idea of wearing the white sweatbands, which was quickly approved.

“Understanding the disease, knowing who (Frates) is, learning about him, becoming friends with him and his family – then we dive into the deep end because it’s important to them.”

DeKALB – Whenever the Northern Illinois baseball players head over to visit the residents of the DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center on Monday nights, the conversation inevitably comes around to America’s pastime.

The Huskies players laugh that those talks certainly turn lively.

“A lot of those guys are big baseball fans – a lot of Sox fans, a lot of Cubs fans – it can get pretty animated,” Northern Illinois junior relief pitcher Andrew Frankenreider said.

“It’s entertaining, for sure.”

The Huskies bring a group of about eight players for two-hour visits on Monday nights to the nursing home as part of a larger focus of community service. The fingerprints of the team are all over the county, as the Huskies are ranked No. 2 in the nation for baseball teams in hours logged on the community service app Helper Helper – of which 120 universities use across the country.

NIU coach Mike Kunigonis said the team of 35 players are broken down into five-man groups and each group is responsible for three community service projects. By breaking it down into smaller groups and allowing them to pick their cause, it allows them to find something meaningful to them, he said.

“What you end up finding is when you have five guys in a group, something is important to somebody – whether it’s Special Olympics, whether it’s breast cancer awareness, somebody has a connection to bring that up,” Kunigonis said.

For junior Tommy Hook, that connection is with the Opportunity House in Sycamore – which is an organization dedicated to helping people with developmental disabilities.

“You form bonds and when you go over there, it becomes a fun thing,” said Hook, who has a cousin with developmental disabilities. “Next thing you know, you’re competing and diving on the floor. It becomes a lot cooler that way – that you can pick your own community service. It’s literally hanging out in the community.”

While the players are allowed to pick their own causes, the team sends a rotating group to the nursing home every Monday evening – except for in the summer when the players go home and when the travel schedule gets too difficult in the season.

Kathy Vickers, the community life director for the center, said that the overwhelming percentage of residents are female. While about 30 of the more than 185 residents are

sports@daily-chronicle.com BIG ROCK – The lack of offense proved to be the downfall for Hinckley-Big Rock in a 10-0 loss in six innings to Serena of a semifinal of the Class 1A Hinckley-Big Rock Regional on Wednesday.

The offense of the Royals (4-20) was nearly nonexistent in their game against No. 3-seed Serena after starting pitcher Trace Berggren allowed only one hit and one walk to the Royals.

“We just didn’t have the fire power that we were hoping for today,” H-BR coach Brandon Jackson said. “Give it up to their pitcher, who played a great game, but we just have to hit better.

We’re a young team and we have a few kids that haven’t played for years and are just getting used to playing at the varsity level. We’re going to try to get them some summer work and hopefully improve next year.”

Berggren had a no-hitter through three innings before allowing his first and only hit of the game. He gave up a walk in the second inning and struck out 11 Royals after six innings on the

mound. The Royals only hit came from pitcher Jacob Morsch, who went 1 for 2.

Serena (13-11) also provided the offense early and often to force the game to end by mercy rule after scoring in every inning but the fourth and fifth innings. The Huskers were led by Jarrid Thorpen who went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and Preston Duffy who went 1-4 and also had 2 RBIs. “I was really excited the way we came out and played,” Serena coach Chad Baker said. “We talked beforehand how we wanted to be really aggressive at the plate and I think we showed that. Trace went out there and threw a great game for us so that topped it off. We had some really big 2 out RBI’s the whole game and we started that in our game last week and it kind of carried over. We got those RBI’s in the first inning and kept it going and that was huge to get those runs early to give them confidence against their pitcher who we knew was going to be tough. I’m just happy we were able to carry ourselves the entire game.”

Serena will face Somonauk or Leo in the final on Saturday.

G-K softball finishes third in BNC East The Genoa-Kingston softball team finished the season in third place in the Big Northern Conference after a 5-0 loss to Marengo.

The Indians finished 14-0 to win the conference crown. The Cogs were 9-5 in the BNC East.

Ashley Peterson had the Cogs’ only hit of the game.

Sycamore softball loses in no-hitter against Streator Madison Parks was on base twice with a pair of walks, but the Spartans lost 11-0 at home.

The Spartans struck out eight times in the loss.

Vinz, Johnson among five Kougars honored Cooper Vinz and Jared Johnson were among five Kishwaukee College baseball players who earned NJCAA Division I Region IV honors on Wednesday.

Vinz led the region with a .435 batting average and led the Arrowhead Conference with 69 runs. The Sycamore graduate also hit 15 home runs and stole 10 bases.

Johnson, a graduate of DeKalb, hit. 381 with 43 RBIs and five home runs. He stole 22 bases.

Matt Albert, David Salguerio and Chris Rodriguez also earned all-region honors. All five made the all-conference team, announced earlier this week.

BURLINGTON – With two goals in the final six minutes to tie the game, the DeKalb girls soccer team took the momentum away from Burlington Central.

But after 20 minutes of overtime that didn’t feature many opportunities for either team, the game went to penalty kicks, and the Rockets scored on their first three chances to beat the Barbs, 4-3, in a Class 2A Burlington Central Regional Semifinal.

The Rockets (17-6) led, 3-1, at halftime, and still held that lead in the 74th minute when DeKalb (12-7-2) scored on a Kayley Garland goal from the left side, cutting the lead to 3-2.

In the final two minutes, it took the referees almost 30 seconds to sort out a foul call, giving the Barbs a free kick from about 10 yards past the midfield line on the right side. They pushed all but one player and their goalkeeper to the front on a free kick, looking to overwhelm the Rockets. As the ball sailed into the air, Hanna Hickey connected with it in front of the net to tie the game with 53.7 seconds left.

“It was a tale of two halves,” coach Patrick Hamilton said. “We didn’t have the most opportunities in the first half, and in the second half we were attacking much better. Those two goals show how tough this team is, how they never give up.”

Both teams had a good look in the overtime, but neither could connect, setting up penalty kicks. Burlington Central goalkeeper Abbi Ciganek set the town early, stuffing Hickey by diving to the left. Jordan King – who scored the first goal of the game in the 15th minute – connected on her shot high past DeKalb goalie Lauren Hagelstein.

Madeline Hill and Elizabeth Gousios traded goals on the next series of penalty kicks, but then Ciganek deflected Kayla Baum’s shot and Anna McMahon – whose goal in the 24th minute put Burlington Central up 2-0 – connected for a 3-1 lead. Isabel Pisano followed with a goal for DeKalb then Burlington Central followed with a shot of the cross bar by Jessica Clouser – whose goal in the 36th minute gave Central a 3-1 lead.

So with her team trailing PKs 3-2, the Barbs needed a goal to keep a chance of a win alive, but the shot sailed high and to the right to clinch the Rocket win.

“The way the second half it made it a little harder to swallow,” Hamilton said. “But it shows what we’re made of. It shows how we’ll fight. I am really proud of the performance tonight.”

“They gained some momentum with some things that we couldn’t control,” Burlington Central coach Jessica Arneson said. “We’re a young team and we need to learn to respond to those things some time when we can’t control them.

They gained some momentum on us there, gaining a couple of advantages there and us not responding properly to it. But it was nice to see them come back and fight hard.”

Hamilton said the Barbs were hoping to make the regional finals, a goal from the start of the year. Instead, their season ends with a one-goal loss to the Rockets for the second straight year.

“We really enjoyed this season,” Hamilton said. “There are 22 girls over there who want to be here tomorrow, who want to play. This was one of my favorite seasons.”

The Rockets will play Sycamore for the title at 6 p.m. Friday. The Spartans lost only two games in the regular season and beat Illinois Math and Science Academy 8-0 in the other semifinal.

In the teams’ meeting earlier this year, the Rockets scored four goals but lost 5-4 – it was the tied for most goals allowed in a game by the Spartans this year, although it occurred in the second game of the season for Sycamore.

“You know, I am confident our girls will fine ways to be able to score,” Arneson said. “We’ve been doing that all season. We played Barrington, we found ways to score. We played Sycamore, we found ways to score. Most teams we played, tough teams, it’s been a higher scoring game.”

Two-out rally by A-FC dooms Hiawatha

ecarifio@shawmedia.com EAST DUNDEE – Hannah Corn and the Hiawatha softball team struck first in a Class 2A Westminster Christian Regional semifinal, but a two-out rally in the fifth by Ashton-Franklin Center was too much for the Hawks.

The Raiders scored four runs, all with two outs, and topped the Hawks 6-2, on Wednesday at Jockey Field.

Corn staked the Hawks (8-14) to a two-run lead in the top of the third with a home run to left field, scoring Shelby Mech. Lauren Watson and Madi Marshall followed with singles in the inning, but A-FC starter Cassidy Koning allowed just two hits the rest of the game.

tween the fourth and seventh innings for the Raiders (15-10), who advance to the final at 4:30 p.m. Friday against Alden-Hebron. Hiawatha coach David Tamraz said the Hawks were making good contact in that stretch, just hitting right at people.

“Madison hit the ball to left-center, that should have been a double. She made a great catch. Out of the last nine (one) struck out. We just hit it to people. And you have to give the pitcher credit. She jammed a couple hitters.”

With one out in the fifth of a 2-2 game, Marshall ripped a pitch to left-center, but freshman center fielder Maley Fike raced to the ball, catching it near the fence for an out.

Raider coach Claude Ainsworth said

that catch acted a springboard for the decisive bottom of the fifth.

“The hitters came through and the playmakers came through,” Ainsworth said. “Maley Fike making that play out there in center field was kind of inspirational. We didn’t play our best game, but we certainly didn’t play our worst game.”

Marshall got the top two hitters in the A-FC lineup out in the bottom of the fifth, but after a single by Koning, she walked the next three batters.

Kendall Sanford singled just past shortstop Jess Znamenski to score two more runs.

“We played a great game today,” Tamraz said. “We hung around til about the fifth inning, and there were a couple bad calls. That was interference, and everybody in the stadium probably thought it was. But we

didn’t get a call at the right time.”

Ainsworth said he was glad to see the two-out rally, which was capped by a single by freshman Jaynee Prestegaard.

“That was pretty cool,” Ainsworth said. “I kept telling the girls if they put the ball in play we’d get some runs. They did, and some girls that were struggling, put the ball in play.”

Koning, the only senior on the Raider roster, allowed two earned runs on six hits, striking out five and walking none. Marshall gave up six earned and walked five, four of which came in the fifth. She struck out three and allowed seven hits in six innings.

“She pitched a great game,” Tamraz said. “There were just a couple batters in that fifth inning she got behind on, and she started aiming the ball. ... But we didn’t give up.”

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Jose Altuve had three hits and two runs batted in, Colby Rasmus and Jason Castro each had a solo home run and the Houston Astros beat the White Sox, 5-3, on Wednesday night despite the Sox turning their second triple play of the season.

Altuve went 3 for 4 with a walk and Castro went 2 for 3 with a walk.

Jose Abreu went 2 for 4 with two RBIs for the Sox, which have dropped a season-high four straight and six of seven overall.

Doug Fister (4-3) allowed three runs on nine hits in 61/3 innings to get the win. Luke Gregerson, who had blown three of his last four save chances, got the final three outs for his ninth save.

The Sox turned a 5-4-3 around-thehorn triple play in the eighth inning.

Mat Latos (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season, but the right-hander has been slumping for four straight starts During that stretch, Latos has allowed 18 runs in 202/3 innings for an earned run average of 7.84. Opponents are batting .396 (36-for-91) with 10 walks against him in those four starts.

Altuve led off the first inning with a single to right and George Springer followed with a walk to put runners on first and second. Correa, the next batter, gave Houston a 1-0 lead with a single to right, scoring Altuve.

Triple play: In the eighth inning, after Kemp and Altuve led off with walks, Springer hit a grounder near the thirdbase line. Todd Frazier fielded the ball and stepped on third before throwing to second baseman Brett Lawrie, who fired to first to complete the triple play.

The Sox also completed one against Texas on April 22 in the seventh inning, an unusual 9-3-2-6-2-5 triple play.

It’s the first time the Sox have had two triple plays in a season since 2006.

The last major league team to have two in a season was Philadelphia in 2007.

CHAMPAIGN – Illinois added former star Dee Brown to its staff Wednesday, saw Kendrick Nunn plead guilty to misdemeanor battery and learned that center Mike Thorne Jr. will get a sixth year of eligibility.

In exchange for Nunn’s guilty plea, he was sentenced to 18 months of unsupervised probation and 100 hours of community service, Champaign County State’s Attorney Julia Rietz said. If he completes those terms, the misdemeanor will be removed from his record.

Nunn was arrested in March and charged with two counts of domestic battery after he was accused of striking a woman. Nunn took responsibility for what happened and began working with a local youth basketball program well before his sentence, leading Rietz to believe the deal – which she said the victim supports – was appropriate.

Larger than life

Bryan Cranston in multifaceted role of LBJ goes ‘All the Way’

or five seasons of “Breaking Bad,” Bryan Cranston displayed his versatility through the dramatic evolution of his character, Walter White, from milquetoast schoolteacher to meth-marketing monster.

But that was just a warmup for “All the Way,” an HBO film adapted from the Tony Award-winning Broadway play that calls for Cranston to embody the almost moment-to-moment volatility of its largerthan-life real-life hero, President Lyndon B. Johnson.

“He was big, he was small. He was boisterous, he was laconic. He was embracing, he was cold,” marvels Cranston. “The polemic of his personality was just unbelievable.”

But Cranston’s performance in the film (which premieres Saturday at 7 p.m.) is much more than an acting exercise.

“All the Way” is a full-bodied portrait of a flawed yet overpowering political force, an unrivaled sweet-talker, arm-twister, bully and, above all, horse trader who mastered, as few have, the clattering contraption of Washington governance.

The film travels the rocky road that led to passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, with LBJ finessing the clash of activism led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. versus hidebound members of Johnson’s own Democratic Party as, at the same time, he furiously fought to hold on to the presidency against his ’64 Republican rival, Barry Goldwater.

Capturing this stormy first year of the Johnson administration, the film is populated by an array of stars including Bradley Whitford (as Johnson’s vice president, Hubert Humphrey), Frank Langella (as his former mentor, Georgia’s mighty Sen. Richard Russell) and Melissa Leo (wondrous as his ever-supportive wife, Lady Bird).

Cranston had made his Broadway debut with “All the Way” – a nervy challenge he couldn’t say no to once he read Robert Schenkkan’s script.

“It’s all about the story,” Cranston said, “how this man ascends to power under great tragedy, and then, a Southern guy, changes how we treat African-American citizens and other minorities in this country.”

He threw himself into research, reading books, visiting key sites (including Johnson’s Texas ranch and his presidential library in Austin) and meeting with people who knew him, including his two daughters.

Even before he opened at the Neil Simon Theatre in March 2014, a film adaptation was in the cards.

Then, during the four-month engagement that would win him a Tony, he settled on his next project: star-

A year later, in late summer 2015, Roach and Cranston re-teamed to film “All the Way” (with Schenkkan bringing his play to the screen).

It was a comfortable transition for all concerned.

“Bryan had not only inhabited the character for so long,” said Roach by phone, “he had also thought in great depth about what mattered in each scene, in each moment, really. On this film, like ‘Trumbo,’ I almost forgot he’s an actor, even though he’s so freaking good. He’s a fellow storyteller, a collaborator on the set.”

“The character was already in my bones,” agrees Cranston, “so it was like putting on that jacket you haven’t had on in months: It just feels good and comfortable and well-worn.”

Of course, “putting on” the character was a bit more complicated this go-around. Onstage, Cranston’s only prosthetics were LBJ’s elephantine ears, which he applied himself before stepping into shoes with 3-inch lifts to hoist him to LBJ’s 6-foot-3-ish elevation.

For the film, by contrast, it took a makeup wizard 2½ hours every morning to turn Cranston into LBJ. “We had a fake chin, nose, cheeks and ears, and I thinned and slicked back my hair. But there’s a certain Zen quality to it,” he says. “As you’re looking in the mirror and you see the character come alive, it helps you get into his headspace.”

nothing of LBJ and looks a decade younger than his own 60 years, vividly recalls the tragedy that put Johnson into office more than a half-century ago.

As a 7-year-old, “still self-centered, as children are,” he was rocked by the awful bulletins on TV, and even more so by his parents’ response: “My mother broke down and wept and my father was hugging her.

Here, for the first time, something very important was happening that didn’t center on me. For me, it was a turning point. And Johnson became the first president that I came to know.”

For decades after he left office, Johnson’s tainted legacy was that of a failed president because of American involvement in Vietnam, with an anti-war movement that raged against him having played a pivotal role in his decision not to seek re-election in 1968.

But Cranston notes that “All the Way” takes a fresh look at one of Johnson’s many victories: standing up for “citizens who couldn’t dine or sleep or travel or vote in the same way white people did.”

Johnson’s saga (which also will be brought to theaters later this year in the Rob Reiner-directed film “LBJ,” with Woody Harrelson in the title role) is all the more compelling now, in the current political climate where head-butts and intransigence, not constructive reform, is the protocol.

“Johnson knew that in a negotiation, both sides have to feel they’ve come away with something: ‘What I give you might hurt me a little bit, but you want it – and I need you.’ Now it’s so polarized, with politicians refusing to give an inch,” says Cranston, masterful as the leader who made hard-won inches add up to miles.

Pet project Movies opening this week include “Angry Birds” (rated PG), based on the popular smartphone game, and “The Nice Guys” (rated R), in which a mismatched pair of 1970s private investigators team up.

“Always a Bridesmaid” is a comedy written by Jessie Jones, Nick Hope and Jamie Wooten, authors of “The Dixie Swim Club,” “The Hallelujah Girls,” “The Red Velvet Cake War” and many others.

Casting is for six females – four in their late 40s, one in her 60s, and one in her late 20s. “A dream is a wish your heart makes.” That’s the message Gregor King wants the audience to take with them after watching the DeKalb middle schools’ combined performance of “My Son Pinocchio Jr.” King is the director of the production and the choir director for Huntley and Clinton Rosette middle schools.

“This show is so much more than a puppet without strings,” King said in a news release. “It’s a musical that conveys the true meaning of family and always following your dreams.”

The production opens this weekend with showtimes at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m.

Sunday at Huntley Middle School, 1515 S. Fourth St. in DeKalb.

Based on the tale of the toymaker, Geppetto, and his beloved wooden puppet, the cast of more than 60 students will take the audience on a journey as Geppetto attempts to track down and return his lessthan-perfect son to the fairy from which he came, only to learn that the true meaning of family really is love with no strings attached.

Tickets cost $4 for students and $8 for adults and can be purchased at either DeKalb middle school or at the door. The proceeds will benefit the De La Cruz family of DeKalb. Ricky De La Cruz recently received a heart transplant.

Kish band to perform final concert of season DAILY CHRONICLE The Kishwaukee Concert Band will present the final concert of the 14th season – A Musical Landscape – at 3 p.m. May 22 in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Music Building at Northern Illinois University.

Dave Lehman will direct the concert and Kirk Lundbeck will be the guest trombone soloist. The concert is sponsored by Robert and Sherry Helmut and supported by the DeKalb County Community Foundation and the Mary E. Stevens Concert and Lecture Fund. The concert is free and handicapped accessible.

The concert will open with “Festival Prelude” and “Three Ayres From Gloucester,” a three-movement selection written in the style of an English folk song.

“Toccata for Band” opens with a flourishing woodwind melody that is followed by a dark yet flowing clarinet chorale, and numerous time signature changes, giving the piece a sharp and angular feel. “Porgy and Bess” by George Gershwin will close out the first segment of the concert.

The second half will open with “Bombasto,” a classic circus “screamer” march known for its exuberant spirit, flashy low brass runs and memorable melody.

Lundbeck will be the featured soloist on “In A Reflective Mood.” He is a graduate of Sycamore High School and Northern Illinois University. He has studied with some of the finest trombone instructors in the world, and performed with the Illinois, Rockford, Elgin and Kishwaukee Symphony orchestras. He has been a member of the DeKalb Municipal Band for the past 37 years and was selected conductor and music director in 2012. He plays throughout the Midwest, and has his own jazz trio, “The Black Tie Jazz Trio.” He also can be found as the pro at Sycamore Golf Club.

Kirk Lundbeck will be the guest trombone soloist at the Kishwaukee Band Concert on May 22.

Lundbeck’s solo will be followed by “Prairiescape” and “On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss,” and “Lassus Trombone.” The concert will conclude with “The Star Spangled Banner.”

The Kishwaukee Concert Band is made up of volunteers older than 18 who have played a wind or percussion instrument in the past. No auditions are needed.

Clarinets are especially welcome. Rehearsals are from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. Wednesdays at the Huntley Middle School band room.

The band is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and contributions are tax deductible.

DAILY CHRONICLE Country music singer and “American Idol” veteran Kellie Pickler will headline the Big R Summer Country Jam on Aug. 13 at the Rochelle Municipal Airport, 1201 W. Gurler Road.

The concert formerly known as the Summer Country Jam will now be called the Big R Summer Country Jam, after the retailer purchased the naming rights, according to a news release.

Sharing the Big R stage with PickKellie Pickler ler is local singer-songwriter Tristan Bushman, of Ashton, and a recent contestant on the

farewell season of “American Idol.” Bushman comes from a musical family and has been performing since age 5. In 2015, he released his first album, “Heartwood.”

Opening for Pickler is emerging country music star Russell Dickerson. A Nashville native, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and Belmont University alumnus, Dickerson’s fans consider him the next big thing, according to the release. Dickerson has shared the stage with artists like Florida Georgia Line, Billy Currington, Kip Moore, Darius Rucker and more.

Kellie Pickler gained fame when she finished in the top 10 of the fifth season of “American Idol.” In 2006, she released her debut album “Small Town Girl,” which produced three singles on the Billboard

Hot Country Songs charts. She had two follow-up albums, “Kellie Pickler” and “100 Proof.” In 2012, she signed with Black River Entertainment and released “The Woman I Am.” Pickler won the “Dancing With The Stars” competition in 2013 and now has her own CMT reality show, “I Love Kellie Pickler,” with husband Kyle Jacobs, a Nashville songwriter.

General admission tickets are $30. A limited number of Coyote Cave tickets are available for $65. Fans in the Cave will have exclusive access to the front of stage, a private bar, butler service, and private portable restrooms. Only 300 premium tickets will be sold.

Dr. John Prabhakar was raised in a lower-middle-class family in India. Life wasn’t easy. He was raised by his father and grandmother after his mother died when he was 6. Prabhakar often studied by the light of an oil lamp because his home lacked electricity. He once failed

a surgery course because he could not afford to buy the textbook. He graduated from Madras Medical School in India.

Prabhakar arrived in the United States in 1967 after borrowing $1,000 to pay for airfare. He began four years of residency work, including a two-year residency at the University of Chicago in vascular and thoracic surgery, finishing in 1974. He and his wife, Esther, eventually made Rochelle their home.

For the next 30 years he served on the staffs of the Rochelle Community

• When will there be a treatment or a vaccine? There currently is no antiviral treatment for this virus. Although scientists are working hard on this, it is unlikely a proven treatment will be available for several years. The same probably is true for a vaccine. It is encouraging that a vaccine against a similar virus, dengue virus, was approved in April. Hopefully, the lessons learned in developing that vaccine will speed development of a vaccine for Zika virus.

• Why are we behind in dealing with this new virus? If you are regular readers of this column, you can predict my answer: because we have not invested enough in biomedical research and public health.

We could have been collecting data on thousands of women in South America when this virus spread there several years ago. We could have started work on antiviral treatments and vaccines. Instead, federal, state and city governments were spending their limited resources on more immediately urgent health issues. There weren’t the funds to try to get ahead of this new virus.

Who determines how much our government spends to protect our health? We the people.

Dear Readers: In yesterday’s column, I discussed new evidence the Zika virus probably causes a brain birth defect that leads to small heads and brains (microcephaly). This can occur when a pregnant woman is infected early in pregnancy, when the baby’s brain is developing.

The virus is carried inside certain mosquitoes called Aedes mosquitoes, which bite and transmit the virus to humans.

Aedes mosquitoes already have spread north from South America and the Caribbean into the southern United States. This obviously is a concern for any woman who is contemplating getting pregnant.

We don’t know, however, how large this risk is: • How often will pregnant women who are infected early in pregnancy have babies with microcephaly? One small study from French Polynesia estimates the risk may be as low as 1 percent. However, in my opinion, that estimate is not very solid.

• What is the likelihood the virus will reach the U.S. and Canada? Aedes mosquitoes now are in about 30 southern U.S. states and in Hawaii. Global warming is encouraging the mosquitoes to travel north.

However, it is hard to predict how rapidly that will happen.

Even though Aedes mosquitoes already are in the U.S., the virus so far has not been found in U.S. mosquitoes. The problem is U.S. citizens often travel south.

Some have become infected with the virus, usually without knowing it, and then have returned to the U.S. carrying the virus. If they are bitten by U.S. Aedes mosquitoes, the virus could be transmitted to those mosquitoes. And those mosquitoes then could spread it to other people in the United States. And then Zika infections could take off in the U.S., just as they have in South America over the past several years.

Dear Abby: My mom died of cancer last year at the young age of 63. (I am 30.) Not one member of my husband’s mother’s family (other than my mother-in-law and father-in-law, whom we live with) acknowledged her death in any way. They can intervene immediately; or pass first, then bid on the next round; or fourth hand can make a lead-directing double, as in today’s deal.

After East doubles two diamonds, North-South are in trouble. In three no-trump, they will lose the first five tricks. Four hearts can also be defeated -- see below. In this sequence, North’s three-diamond rebid asked his partner to bid three no-trump with a diamond stopper. When South continued with four clubs (denying both a stopper and three-card heart support), North wisely passed.

West led the diamond seven. East took three tricks in the suit, and West correctly signaled with the spade queen (top of touching honors) on the third round. East, now knowing from the point count that South had the spade king and the heart king, led another diamond, which promoted West’s club jack as the setting trick.

Note that four hearts is beaten similarly, West ruffing the fourth diamond with his heart 10, which effects an uppercut.
