POLL Bedtime is no time for fairy tales YESTERDAY’S RESULTS In fairy tales, rocking your baby to bed is supposed to be a magical time. However, most working moms realize it’s not all snuggles and pixie dust: Our daughters and sons have other plans.

The other evening I was rocking my 2-yearold daughter to bed. I still rock her and even feed her a bottle, too. No judging, remember.

Anyway, as I was doing so, she kept looking at my forehead. I was wondering what in the world she was staring at. Finally, with her tiny finger, she pointed at my blemish.

I tried to hide it with makeup, but I guess it wasn’t working. This pimple was big enough for her to see it in the dim light of the bedroom.

For Hannah Jo, it was an interesting conversation piece. She wanted to know if it hurt.

I replied, “Yes”. Then she wanted to poke at it to make it hurt more and hear me say, “Ouchie.” Not knowing her colors very well, she wanted to know why it was blue. I explained to her the pimple was a shape of a big circle and bright pink or red.

Then she proceeded to ask me about my beauty mark under my eye. She wanted to know if it hurt. She wanted to know why it was black (really it is brown). My daughter went on to critique quite a few other freckles on my face. I knew she was really curious. So I let her continue on with her inquisition regarding blemishes, freckles and moles.

Like it was a boo-boo, my sweet toddler lifted her head up and kissed my pimple. I had to hold in my laughter as I slipped out of her room.

As I was laughing, I was compelled to think that my life is not a fairy tale, and if I tried to make it one, I would be beyond exhausted because I would be trying to live up to a flawless standard.

Honestly, neither my life nor my skin is flawless.

TODAY’S TALKER Senate easily advances $1.1 billion in Zika funding

WASHINGTON – The Senate voted decisively Tuesday in favor of a bipartisan $1.1 billion measure to combat the Zika virus this year and next, cutting back President Barack Obama’s request but offering significantly more money to fight Zika than would House GOP conservatives.

The 68-29 vote propelled the measure over a filibuster and sets the stage to add the Zika funding to an unrelated spending bill. It comes three months after Obama requested $1.9 billion to battle the virus, which can cause severe birth defects.

A showdown looms with the House, which is scheduled to debate its $622 million anti-Zika measure today. The House would fund the Zika battle for a shorter duration – through September – and is “offset” with spending cuts elsewhere in the budget.

The Senate vote came after Republicans blocked

a measure matching Obama’s request and after Democrats killed a GOP-backed proposal to cut into Obama’s health care law to pay for battling Zika.

The effects of Zika are not very severe for most adults, but for pregnant women, the virus can cause a serious birth defect called microcephaly and other severe birth defects. Zika is commonly spread by mosquitoes and can also be contracted through sexual contact.

Zika is expected to spread more widely during the summer mosquito season, but officials said outbreaks in the U.S. are likely to be limited. To date, there have been more than 500 cases of Zika in the continental U.S., all of which so far have been associated with overseas travel.

Obama requested the funding in February and has been forced to tap unspent 2015 funds from the successful battle against Ebola to finance almost $600 million in anti-Zika efforts.

Couple trade in DeKalb 2-bedroom apartment for tiny house

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – An organic farmer and his wife, a student at Northern Illinois University, spent the past year building a 185-square-foot house on a trailer in the driveway of the house they rented on Haish Boulevard in DeKalb.

Christopher Futty, 29, and his wife, Allie Futty, 27, left DeKalb with their tiny house on a 20-foot trailer this week after Allie Futty’s weekend graduation ceremony. The couple are part of the small, but growing tiny house movement.

In the U.S., homes of fewer than 1,000 square feet accounted for about 1 percent of all buyers, according to a National Association of Realtors 2014 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers.

Two percent of first-time buyers opted for homes smaller than 1,000 square feet. The median square footage was 1,900.

For the Futtys, the decision to go tiny was driven by a combination of economic and lifestyle factors.

“The economic factor was huge for us,” Christopher Futty said. “To be able to travel when we want to, to not have to worry about having a mortgage, to be able to save money because we’re not paying an enormous amount of rent every month – all of that was key factor in trying to figure out some way that we can live a life together doing the things we really care the most about.”

Just as important for the Futtys was the freedom that a mobile home would allow, along with a desire to spend more time outside, with friends and with the communities they will be living in.

When finished, the 185-square-foot dwelling built on a 20-foot trailer will have cost the couple about $35,000. It will have a tankless propane water heater, a chest freezer converted into a refrigerator, a 1-cubic-foot washing machine and a two-burner stove fueled by denatured alcohol. They won’t have a TV and their days of collecting artwork are over – the couple decided on a single piece of art for the tiny house – a large photograph taken from their time in Trinidad.

Other features include a soaking tub, a composting toilet, a loft with a queensize bed and lots of natural light. That was important for Allie, who is visually impaired. She wanted to make sure there would be enough light so that she was able to cook, her husband said.

They built the home in the driveway of the Haish Boulevard rental while Allie was working toward a graduate degree in special education at NIU. She got a job teaching in Vermont while her husband plans to live in the tiny house

on rental property in Massachusetts and work on an organic farm.

The couple have two dogs – Scamp, a half beagle, half terrier, and Ellie, a pure-bred German shepherd, who serves as a guide dog. While they don’t

plan to live in the tiny house forever, they did design it with children in mind.

“Maybe we’re being really dreamy, but we did build it with family in mind,” Christopher Futty said.

Neither had any building experience when they started the project. They built the house using plans drawn up by Allie Futty’s grandfather, Paul Shuler, a semiretired architect. They made a lot of mistakes along the way, and still have some issues to address. But the building process brought both closer with Shuler and left them feeling gratified by what they had accomplished.

They didn’t do all the work on their own. They hired an electrician for the electrical work and will have a plumber out Thursday to fix some drainage issues.

The Futtys arrived in Massachusetts on Monday night and still have some work to do on the house.

“We had intentionally left some things off our to-do list so that we could get a sense of how the house functions with us (and the dogs) in it,” Christopher Futty said in an email Tuesday.

“One unexpected thing in our rush to leave the big house for our tiny house was how much junk we still have. So, the Northampton Salvation Army will be getting some really great donations in the next few days as we continue to pare down.”

Sycamore parks fundraising campaign gets a $25K boost To help

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The Sycamore Park District’s fundraising campaign got a boost from a recent $25,000 donation from the Rotary Club of Sycamore.

“The Rotary Club is proud to join this legacy that will serve this great community today and into the future,” Rotary Club President Russell Bishop said in a statement.

Sycamore park board President Ted Strack said the club’s donation reflected the spirit of the Sycamore community.

“It’s a statement about Sycamore,” he said. “When somebody has a good idea, people get behind it, they support the cause.”

District leaders hope to raise $1 million from private donors to help pay for Action 2020 projects, which include a recreation campus, community center, dog park and splash pad. The plan also calls for expanding the district’s trail system and main sports complex and installing a new irrigation system at the Sycamore Golf Club.

The Action 2020 plans will cost about $13 million. Voters approved a property tax referendum in November 2014 that will allow the park district to borrow about $9 million. Officials also have identified $3 million in potential grant funding. The Leaf a Legacy campaign’s goal is to raise the final $1 million from community donors.

An anonymous donor has pledged up to $300,000 to match all donations and commitments made this year by 50 percent.

District officials have approached groups that use district facilities – such as youth sports organizations – about donating to the campaign. Strack said the organizations are being asked to come up with $100,000 each.

“The groups have been encouraging,” he said. “They understand the benefit of this.”

Sycamore Youth Baseball and Sycamore Girls’ Softball plan to apply for a grant from the Baseball Tomorrow Fund, a joint initiative of Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association, that gives grants to organizations involved in the operation of youth baseball and softball programs and facilities. The fund awards an average of 55 grants a year averaging more

than $1.8 million annually, according to its website.

The local nonprofit sports organizations hope the grant can help the overarching Action 2020 plan and the Leaf A Legacy campaign, said Kevin McCall, president of Sycamore Youth Baseball.

“Everyone has been supportive,” he said. “The attitude has been, ‘Let’s see what we can do.’ ” Improved Sycamore Park District facilities with additional fields would give more Sycamore Youth Baseball players the chance to play on real fields, additional practice facilities and the opportunity to host tournaments here, McCall said.

In addition, the six citizen committees dedicated to individual projects that are part of the Action 2020 plan are in the process of creating their own fundraisers.

“We’re trying to carve it up into pieces that make sense,” Strack said.

Committee to reveal the 2016 Pumpkin Fest theme

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – One lucky elementary school student will secure a spot in October’s Pumpkin Fest parade and be named the festival’s theme contest winner this evening.

The Pumpkin Fest Committee will reveal the 2016 theme at 6 p.m. on

the front steps of the DeKalb County Courthouse. Elementary students from Sycamore School District 427, St. Mary’s School in Sycamore, and Cornerstone Christian Academy submitted a total 204 applications for the festival’s theme, committee President Jerry Malmassari said. Theme Director Jennifer Diehl was charged with narrowing down the applications to

24 semifinalists. The committee will name a contest winner and two honorable mentions at Wednesday’s reveal.

“All kids will receive a participation certificate and the three winners will receive a tote bag,” Malmassari said. “The three winners from this collection are also invited to ride in the Pumpkin Festival parade.”

The first-place winner will take

home a $50 check, a copy of Tom Oestreicher’s “Mr. Pumpkin & the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival: A 50 Year History” and have their name inscribed on the Pumpkin Fest trophy. The two honorable mentions will receive $25 checks and copies of Oestreicher’s book, Malmassari said.

This year’s Pumpkin Fest will be Oct. 26 through 30.

College faces choppy fiscal future Uncertainty about state funding, enrollment leads to more consideration of cuts

rgillespie@shawmedia.com MALTA – Kishwaukee College pumped most of the $1.1 million it got from the state this month back into its rainy-day fund, replenishing its reserves in anticipation of having to dip into them again as the budget storm in Springfield drags on.

“Our FY16 budget was built with the assumption that we would receive $5 million in state aid,” Kishwaukee College President Laurie Borowicz Laurie said.

On April 22, legis- Borowicz lators approved a plan that finally sent some money flowing to the state’s higher education institutions.

But before the funds finally arrived earlier this month, Kishwaukee College had already spent nearly three-fourths of its $5.9 million re-

serve fund.

Illinois is currently in its 11th month without a budget for fiscal 2016.

The current General Assembly session closes at the end of the month, when a budget plan for fiscal 2017, which begins July 1, is supposed to be in place.

“There is still a continuing possibility of not having a state budget, and we may again be put into a position of having to use reserves,” Borowicz said.

The college plans to use some of the $1.1 million toward the adult education program and also to pay Bill Nicklas, who was hired as a new aide to Borowicz this month. His contract is for six months at a total salary of $35,000.

But declining enrollment is also besetting the college. Borowicz said the school had projected a 6.5 percent decrease in enrollment for the 2015-16 school year, but actually experienced an 8.8 percent drop.

She explained the drop in student

enrollment has meant a loss of about $275,000 in tuition and fees revenue.

To address the financial woes, Borowicz devised a plan that included laying off 24 employees, rethinking scholarship award amounts, reducing student-work hours, raising tuition by $10 per credit hour and charging more for child care services.

Then at the May 10 board of trustees meeting, Beth Young, the new chief financial officer, reported the school has also lost money through its bookstore, cafeteria and student activities.

Bookstore sales volume has dropped since July 1, Young reported to trustees.

She said as a result, the college implemented some “innovative ideas” to help the situation.

The Kishwaukee College bookstore started selling store gift cards, for which the school gets a commission. Also, some of its old inventory was made available on Amazon.com The items brought in $40,000, an exponential return on the $50 the

school spent to post the items for sale, Young said.

She said the college would “continue to do that, moving forward, to eliminate the out-of-stock inventory-type items that aren’t selling in our bookstore.”

Food costs forced officials to reduce operating hours at the cafeteria, which will now close early and won’t be open at all on Fridays. Also, they are hoping that menu changes to include combo specials will boost revenue.

The college also plans to award fewer scholarships, at least in the next school year.

Academic awards through the college’s foundation would be reduced, officials announced, and officials are looking at doing away with awarding athletic scholarships to incoming freshmen.

“I know that there are some concerns,” Borowicz said. “We’ll have to make some decisions if our enrollments don’t turn around and state money hasn’t come around.”

Sycamore council approves reduced speed on Prairie Drive

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The speed limit on Prairie Drive through the Sycamore Prairie Industrial Park will soon be reduced by 5 mph, after a City Council vote.

The council on Monday voted, 6-1, in favor of the new speed limit.

Council members Curt Lang, Chuck Stowe, Pete Paulsen, Becky Springer, Rick Kramer and Janice Tripp voted in favor of the limit reduction. First Ward Alderman Alan Bauer opposed the change, and 3rd Ward Alderman Steve Braser was absent.

Drivers aren’t likely to notice the reduced speed, since vehicles already seemed to be traveling at 40 mph on that stretch of road in a traffic study conducted earlier this year, Mayor Ken Mundy said.

“People are more cautious now than before when Der Holtzmacher was the only business out there for a long time. It took a long time for anything to happen in Sycamore Prairie Business Park,” Mundy said. “Now

that things have happened and there are new streets and new buildings and so forth, there’s more to be cautious of and, of course, more trucks.”

City Engineer Mark Bushnell has been working alongside the DeKalb Sycamore Area Transportation Study to collect data for a traffic speed study on Prairie between Peace Road and Borden Avenue, city documents show.

After reviewing a DSATS study that counted 6,714 vehicles on Prairie Drive from Jan. 5 to 6 of this year, Bushnell recommended the speed be reduced from 45 mph to 40 mph. The speeds of the vehicles ranged from 12 mph to 61 mph, however, the most common speeds were 41 mph and 40 mph, the study showed.

Although there is a history of crashes in the area, the roadway itself isn’t considered a “high-crash location,” City Manager Brian Gregory has said.

Rather, Bushnell recommended the speed be reduced by 5 mph because of the number of entrance and exit points to the road, city documents show.

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – DeKalb School District 428 Board members asked administrators Tuesday for more information about how the district spends $1.4 million on extracurricular activities as it faces a looming budget deficit.

Extracurricular activities at DeKalb High School, Huntley Middle School and Clinton Rosette Middle School were discussed as part of an update on the district’s budget.

During a presentation at Tuesday’s board meeting, administrators showed that the district could have to deal with a deficit that could range from $101,000 to $2.3 million next school year.

Extracurricular activities include

clubs, intramural programs, music and sports. DeKalb High School offers 49 clubs, one intramural program, four music programs and 19 sports programs that serve more than 2,300 students. Huntley Middle School has 14 clubs, one intramural program, two music programs and 10 sports programs that serve 981 students. Clinton Rosette Middle School has 23 clubs, one intramural program, two music programs and 10 sports programs that serve 616 students, according to board documents.

“The extracurricular activities summary, I would really like to see more details about that – just so we know if we’re running clubs that just serve one student,” board Vice President Vickie Hernan-Faivre said. “I don’t want to

Mixed reviews for latest budget talks

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Legislative leaders gave mixed reviews Tuesday to the latest negotiations with Gov. Bruce Rauner to seek an end to Illinois’ epic budget standoff, tempering any optimism with skepticism that a compromise is possible anytime soon.

As the stalemate nears a year, Rauner and his fellow Republicans continue to press Democrats to pass pro-business, union-weakening legislation and make Illinois’ workers’ compensation insurance program less expensive for businesses. In return, the governor and Republicans have said they would go along with a tax increase to solve the state’s multibillion-dollar deficit.

After the meeting, Republican House Leader Jim Durkin described the meeting this way: “I’m pleased to say that after many, many months of objection by (Speaker Michael Madigan) to discuss any type of reform, the speaker has indicated he will open negotiations on collective bargaining in local governments, pension reform and also workmen’s compensation reform.

State upgrading security for driver’s licenses, ID cards

CHICAGO – Illinois will soon begin mailing more secure driver’s licenses and ID cards to applicants as the state works to meet tighter federal security standards, officials said Tuesday.

By the end of July, applicants will start receiving a temporary paper ID or license, which is good for 45 days, along with their old ID or license with a hole punched in it, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White’s office announced. Those items will serve as identification and are good for air travel.

The office then will send the applicant’s information to a central, secure facility located in Illinois for a fraud check to vet the applicant’s identity. The state will then mail the applicant a “higher quality, more secure” license or ID within 15 days, officials said.

Professors protest Rauner’s education board nomination

URBANA – Gov. Bruce Rauner’s choice to fill the college faculty slot on the Illinois Board of Higher Education has prompted backlash from faculty at the University of Illinois and across the state.

Rauner announced John Bambenek, a former Champaign school board member and a onetime Republican state Senate candidate, as his faculty choice in midApril. At the time of the announcement, the governor said Bambenek would bring a unique perspective to the board because of his experience as a lecturer and small-business owner.

Cool, wet weather keeps farmers out of fields

SPRINGFIELD – The Department of Agriculture says wet, cool conditions in Illinois kept farmers out of their fields for much of last week.

The average temperature across Illinois was about three degrees below normal at 58.8 degrees. Precipitation averaged 2.09 inches, about 2 inches above normal.

Agriculture analysts say there was only one day during the week ending May 15 that had conditions suitable for field work.

Eighty-three percent of the corn crop has been planted, compared with the five-year average of 76 percent. Corn emerged was at 64 percent, compared with 66 percent last year and the five-year average of 45 percent. Twenty-nine percent of the soybean crop has been planted.

Clinton holds a commanding lead of nearly 300 pledged delegates over Sanders and a dominant advantage among party officials and elected leaders known as superdelegates.

Trump sends teams to Democrat-leaning states

WASHINGTON – Donald Trump is rushing to install operatives in several states that traditionally favor Democrats, pointing to a general election plan consistent with the campaign he has run thus far: defying conventional wisdom and political trends.

The staffing expansion includes Maine, Minnesota and other places where Trump opens as the underdog, with the New York billionaire seeking to expand the electoral battlefield by drawing on his appeal among working-class white voters – and probable Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton’s perceived weakness with them. Still, it is an unlikely path to the White House, through states that no Republican presidential candidate has carried since the 1980s.

“I will win states that no Republican would even run in,” Trump told The Associated Press in a recent interview.

The Trump campaign has identified roughly 15 states where it plans to install state directors by the end of the month. They include traditional battlegrounds such as Ohio, Florida and Virginia and more challenging terrain such as Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Maine – places Republican have lost for the last six presidential elections or longer.

Target states also will likely include Republican-leaning Georgia, where demographic shifts benefit Democrats.

Trump’s deployment of political operatives was outlined by campaign strategists who weren’t authorized to speak publicly about internal strategy and demanded anonymity.

The plan will be subsidized, at least in part, by the Republican Party’s new “building fund,” a lightly regulated pool of money that can include donations of more than $100,000 from individual donors, they said, though rules for doing so

Trump is still playing catch-up at this point. While Clinton is already weeks into her own swing-state effort, Trump’s team is scrambling to build a national organization essentially from scratch.

“Up until three weeks ago, there were 102 or 103 employees, which is fewer than Ben Carson had in January,” Trump aide Barry Bennett said. “Today, that number is much bigger, and it’s growing every day.”

The former reality television star’s success in the GOP primary season was fueled almost exclusively by personality and a flood of free media coverage. His expansion into new states signals recognition that Trump must grow his bare-bones operation to be competitive this fall, even if he doesn’t fully embrace other modern-day political tactics.

He refused to add a pollster for the first 11 months of his White House bid, relying on sometimes questionable public polls when making strategic decisions. Shifting toward November’s vote, he recently hired GOP pollster Tony Fabrizio.

It’s a step toward professionalizing the campaign. Up to now, Trump’s strategists have relied on the Republican National Committee’s

voter data and internal poling to guide the battleground state staffing plan. Going forward, Fabrizio will work with Trump and committee staff on voter modeling, overseeing polling and voter targeting, according to someone familiar with the hiring.

Trump’s team aims to have about 15 state directors on the payroll by June 1, supplementing more than 200 committee operatives nationwide. Communications, events and “coalitions” chiefs will augment the campaign’s presence.

But bringing in more players doesn’t necessarily make a winning team. Some of the most experienced swing-state Republican operatives have shunned Trump and it’s unclear how many might work for him now that he has almost clinched the Republican nomination. Without them, he would be left with a pool of state-based loyalists, many inexperienced and unknown to the campaign’s leaders.

To help fund the expansion, Trump’s strategists said he’ll draw from a fundraising deal with the Republican National Committee that should be signed in coming days. Clinton has a similar agreement with Democrats, enabling her to collect checks of more than $350,000 from individual donors.

Rerun of a bad idea in Springfield With apologies to Yogi Berra, it’s dejá vu all over again in Springfield.

Less than a year ago, the Democrat-controlled General Assembly was asked to override a Gov. Bruce Rauner veto of a bad bill that sought to take the power of negotiating with the state’s labor unions out of the governor’s hands and place it into those of an unelected panel of arbitrators who have no accountability to taxpayers.

While the Senate voted to override, three Democratic representatives joined all Republican representatives in voting not to override, and the veto stood. All 71 Democrats in the House were needed. DeKalb County’s state representatives, Rep. Bob Pritchard of Hinckley and Rep. Tom Demmer of Dixon, were among the Republicans refusing to back a veto override.

Springfield being Springfield, a new, yet worse, version of that bill is now in a similar position.

Rauner and the state’s largest employee union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, remain at odds over the terms of a new contract.

AFSCME members have been working under the old contract terms since July 1.

Because of Illinois’ dire fiscal condition, Rauner wants to freeze AFSCME workers’ salaries, saying the state can’t afford raises. AFSCME is seeking salary and benefit increases Rauner said will cost taxpayers an additional $3 billion over the life of the four-year contract.

House Bill 580, the new version of last year’s legislation, would hand the contract decision over to an unelected arbitrator who has no accountability to taxpayers.

That’s just not acceptable.

Historically in Illinois, arbitration favors unions more often than not. And what’s worse about this latest version is it also tacks on automatic pay raises that immediately would cost state taxpayers an additional $400 million.

Rauner vetoed HB580 on Monday, setting up the General Assembly for another override vote, perhaps as early as today.

Once again, all Republican lawmakers are expected to oppose the override. We urge the Democratic representatives who opposed overriding this measure last year to do so again.

Common sense at the Supreme Court Articulating his view of judicial restraint during an address to Georgetown University law graduates in 2006,Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. said the Supreme Court should keep its rulings limited strictly to the issues squarely before it, because, as he put it, “if it is not necessary to decide more to a case ... it is necessary not to decide more.”

That doctrine of avoidance goes double for cases in which it is impossible for the court to decide anything at all – or so it would seem based on the justices’ hyper-cautious disposition Monday of a controversial case involving religious-freedom objections to the contraceptive mandate under the Affordable Care Act. Certain religiously affiliated nonprofit groups that provide health-insurance coverage to their workers object to a workaround the government devised to accommodate their theological opposition to contraception. In essence, it would allow groups that fill out a written notification form to have their employees obtain contracep-

tion coverage through a separate insurance account. However, the groups argued that even that minimal step forced them actively to promote a process that ends in the provision of contraception, thus imposing a “substantial” burden on their free exercise of religion.

We thought, and still think, the religious groups were expressing serious concerns, but their legal claim was a stretch – and the Obama administration has the better argument, based on ensuring equal health care for women. Four of the five federal appeals courts to consider the matter agreed. However, the eight-member Supreme Court found itself deadlocked after Justice Antonin Scalia’s death.

At that point, the justices took an unusual but creative step, issuing an order that laid out a possible compromise solution and asking the parties to the case to file briefs commenting on it. The court’s suggestion, in essence, was that religious objectors could trigger the workaround not by filling out a government form, but by notifying insurers that they do not want

contraceptives included in their group plans, whereupon the insurers would contact employees to offer them coverage. The religious groups signaled support for such an alternative, and the Obama administration said it could not be ruled out.

We’re all for it, too – as long as the end result still facilitates unhindered access to birth control coverage for those who need it.

Monday’s brief, unsigned Supreme Court opinion throws out the lower-court opinions and gives them another shot at the litigation, without any ruling by the justices on the legal issue at the heart of it.

The court’s opinion pointedly noted that the do-over gives both the administration and the religious organizations an “opportunity” to work out a compromise, either along the lines the court itself sketched or some variation thereof. In short, the court dropped a big hint that this matter might be best dealt with through a less polarized, and polarizing, process. We hope the parties take advantage.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

whatever it’s worth, the answer to the second is, too.

It is a measure of the deep emotion this subject still stirs that will be a controversial and divisive opinion.

Many good and moral people will find it abhorrent. Of course, the opposite opinion would also have been controversial and divisive and would have appalled other people, equally good, equally moral.

In the end, then, one can only answer to conscience, and this particular conscience is disinclined to second guess the long-ago president and military commanders who felt the bombs might obviate the need to invade the Japanese home islands at a ruinous cost in American lives. Remember that the Japanese, inebriated by the Bushido warrior code, under which surrender equals shame and dishonor, had refused to capitulate, although defeat had long been a foregone conclusion.

Even after Hiroshima was leveled,

it still took that nation nine days to give up.

That said, there is a more visceral reason the answer to the second question must be No: Any other answer would defame Americans who endured unimaginable cruelty at Japanese hands.

Should America apologize?

Ask Ray “Hap” Halloran, a B-29 navigator from Cincinnati who was beaten, stoned, starved, stripped naked and displayed in a cage at the Tokyo Zoo. Ask Lester Tenney, a tanker from Chicago whose sleep was forever raddled with nightmares of a twitching, headless corpse – a man he saw decapitated in the death march on Bataan.

And by all means, ask Forrest Knox, a sergeant from Janesville, Wisconsin. He was trapped with 500 other prisoners in the hold of a Japanese freighter where the heat topped 120 degrees and there was barely any water. Some of the men broke out in gibbering, howling fits of madness, prompting a Japanese threat to close off the hatch through which their meager air came if there was not silence.

The maddened men could not be

reasoned with. So American men killed American men. Knox saw this.

And participated. And for years afterward, he was haunted by dead men walking the streets of Janesville.

Should America apologize? No. This was not slavery. This was not the Trail of Tears. This was not the incarceration of Japanese Americans.

This was not, in other words, a case of the nation committing human-rights crimes against innocent peoples.

No, this was war, a fight for survival against a ruthless aggressor nation. Japan committed unspeakable atrocities.

America did the same. Such is the nature of war. Seven decades later, the idea of an apology feels like moral impotence, a happy face Band-Aid that denies the awful immensity of it all.

There are two words that should be spoken, in fact, reverently whispered, with regard to Hiroshima and they are not “I’m sorry.” No, the only words that matter are this promise and prayer: Never again.

Illinois must work to clean up voter registration rolls DAVID ORR

D.Orr@cookcountyil.gov There is a presidential election in six months, and although we’ve made tremendous strides in improving the accuracy of voter registration records in recent years, the Illinois voter rolls remain lousy and incomplete.

Two years ago I called for a voter registration renaissance, driven by technology, to encourage greater participation by eligible voters.

With the help of legislation already proposed in the Illinois General Assembly, the time to ensure our voter rolls are accurate and complete is now.

First, the Illinois General Assembly should fund Illinois’ membership in the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC), so that we can have access to the names of voters who have died, moved, or for whatever reason are still on our voting rolls. Without modest spending authority our rolls will remain dirty. Plus, the state stands to lose a $400,000 grant from Pew

Charitable Trusts if we don’t act.

Almost 700,000 people in Illinois remain registered at addresses where they no longer live. Another 34,000 dead people have yet to be removed from the voting rolls.

At least 60,000 voters who are on the rolls live in other states. An additional 90,000 people are registered in Illinois – twice.

This is unacceptable. It’s time for a spring cleaning.

Second, pass automatic voter registration (AVR) so that we can clean our rolls going forward. Otherwise, our rolls will remain dirty. If government agencies can’t be made to talk to each other and share information so that voting rolls are accurate and citizens don’t need to unnecessarily engage with multiple bureaucracies, then government really is worthy of the scorn and contempt often heaped upon it.

Twenty years ago, I led the fight to implement the National Voter Registration Act, also known as “motor voter,” in Illinois. Automatic Voter Registration is today’s motor voter.

AVR would make management of voter records and registering eligible voters much easier for elections administrators. It would make the process of voter registration – and knowing if one is registered to vote – less confusing and intimidating. It would also potentially decrease lines on Election Day. We live in a mobile society – in 2012 more than 13 percent of Illinoisans (1,715,798 people) moved.

Although my office, and county clerks across the state, have worked with the U.S. Postal Service to use change-of-address information to update voter records, not everyone files a change of address form when they move, and many voters mistakenly assume that their voter registration automatically moves with them.

People shouldn’t have to worry about re-registering each time they move, marry or change their names.

It’s inefficient and inconvenient.

AVR would get us even closer to the point where voters would know their registration was current and administrators would have even

better, more accurate voter registration records.

Simply put, government interfaces with millions of people every year.

Why shouldn’t it be up to units of government to work together to make all of these pieces sync together seamlessly? Government can and must ensure all voter registration records are accurate and up-to-date and not pass that burden on to the citizens it serves.

Passing automatic voter registration and funding Electronic Registration Information Center membership are two clear instances where government, with the resources and technology we now have, can effectively and efficiently work for the people. Some of the technology now available to elections administrators was unthinkable 20 years ago.

We have the technology and resources to streamline and secure voter registration – why not use them?

I urge Springfield to pass AVR and fund ERIC.

Japan surrendered the next Wednesday, ending the Second World War. Last week, when it was announced President Barack Obama will become the first sitting U.S. president to visit Hiroshima, everyone from Salon to the National Review raised two important questions: Will the president apologize for what America did 71 years ago this August? Should he?

BURLINGTON – Sycamore goalkeeper Amanda Cook spent most of the first half just trying to keep the sun out of her eyes.

There wasn’t much else for her to do as the top-seeded Spartans blitzed their way to an easy 8-0 victory over No. 7 Illinois Math and Science Academy in a Class 2A Burlington Central Regional Semifinal on Tuesday.

“Defense did a nice job of keeping the ball and making sure (Cook) didn’t have a whole lot to do,” Sycamore Dave Lichamer said. “You certainly don’t want a keeper that’s busy in the back. I’d rather have her bored than seeing all kinds of stuff. She’s still vocal and controlled the back line, so that was a positive.”

In a game that the Spartans (19-2-1) overwhelmingly dominated the possession, the Titans did not have a shot on the day – leaving Cook a spectator in the contest.

“That’s always good to see,” Cook said of the inactivity. “My defense was doing their job today.”

Sycamore advances to the regional final, in which it will face No. 5 Burlington Central once again in the playoffs.

The Spartans and the Rockets, who beat DeKalb, 4-3, on penalty kicks on Monday, are set to square off at 6 p.m. Friday in Burlington.

“We’ve had some history there certainly,” Lichamer said of the meetings against the Rockets.

Not only did Sycamore survive a 5-4 scoring fest at Burlington Central earlier this season, it will be the fourth consecutive postseason that the Spartans and Rockets have met. Sycamore knocked out the Rockets in regional finals in 2015 (2-1 victory) and 2013 (1-0 victory), but Burlington Central edged the Spartans, 4-3, in a 2014 regional semifinal.

The high-scoring meeting this season came early, with it being the second game of the year for the Spartans.

“It was one of those crazy, high-scoring games,” Lichamer said. “We certainly kept the scoreboard operator happy, pushing all the buttons. It’s early season, so who knows? We look different, I’m sure they look different than in the early season.”

The Spartans spent little time pushing themselves to a lopsided lead on Monday against the Titans.

They scored three goals in the opening two minutes – including a goal by freshman Taylor Meier 39 seconds into the contest – and held a 7-0 lead by halftime.

‘Miracle on Ice’ goaltender Jim Craig is selling gold medal

NEW YORK – The 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team’s victory over the Soviet Union is forever remembered as the “Miracle on Ice.” Now, the goaltender of that gold medal-winning team, Jim Craig, is parting with his most prized items from one of the greatest sporting moments of the 20th century.

Estimated to bring between $5 million and $7 million, the 17 items are being offered through the online auction house Lelands.com.

The sale went live Tuesday and ends June 17.

SOFTBALL: CLASS 1A SOMONAUK REGIONAL SEMIFINAL: SOMONAUK 10, INDIAN CREEK 0

sports@daily-chronicle.com SOMONAUK – The Indian Creek softball team’s struggles at the plate ended its season against host Somonauk in the Class 1A Somonauk Regional semifinal, falling, 10-0, after six innings on Tuesday.

Somonauk (26-2) was firing on all cylinders as they cruised to the regional final. The biggest struggle for Indian Creek (8-16) came at the plate – Somonauk starting pitcher Bailee Krantz gave up just four hits while striking out 16 during the shortened six-inning game.

Krantz struck out the first six batters she faced.

“I’m not quite sure why we struggled at the plate so much today,” Indian Creek coach Alyx Bickel said. “I think we just weren’t picking the ball up off of their pitcher’s hips and she just pitched a really great game and you can’t take that away from her. I think as a whole, we were having trouble seeing the ball in order to put it into play. We haven’t had much time off and she’s a faster pitcher than what we’ve seen, so that got into our heads, too.”

Hailey Herrmann led the Timberwolves with two hits on three at-bats.

While Krantz blanked the Timberwolves, Somonauk coach Scott Siuda believed the Bobcats’ bats were just as important in the semifinal win.

“We got off to a real slow start and didn’t really get going until the fourth inning,” Siuda said. “When we started hitting, we were hitting balls right to their fielders and then we just got back into our game and things started going our way a little bit, but I feel fine with the team. I’ll take good pitching and hitting every day and Bailee threw a nice game for us. It was a game where everyone had to contribute and we had to do the little things here and there, but we’ll be just

fine.”

The Bobcats recorded 13 hits and were led by Tayler Fall who went 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Krantz also had two RBIs. Looking past the lopsided score, Bickel doesn’t believe Tuesday’s outcome reflected her team.

“I thought we played a pretty tough game out there and the left side played really well picking up a lot of hits,” Bickel said. “We’ve grown a lot this season.

Both times we’ve played them this season it was 8-1 losses and today was an improvement by taking them into the sixth inning at least and holding our own for a while.”

Kaneland dominates Rochelle, advances to regional title game

eingles@shawmedia.com STERLING – Kaneland kept the ball in the Rochelle end most of the afternoon and came away with a 5-0 win in the semifinal of the Class 2A Sterling Regional on Tuesday.

The Knights (15-4-2) held a 15-0 edge in corner kicks, a 57-1 edge in total shots and a 41-1 edge in shots on goal in the game.

“Our coaches reiterate driving in by dribbling,” Kaneland attacking midfielder Gabby Cano said. “That’s what I’ve been focusing on along with the other center mids, so when we dribble it in, we can usually get a shot around the 18-yard box.”

Many of those shots had to come from well beyond the 18-yard box as Rochelle packed its defense in, often keeping six or seven players in the box.

“Smart move on their part,” Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said. “Every once in a while we’d have to pass all the way back to keeper and that would open it up. As soon as they would do that, we could counter real quick and take advantage.”

Those long shots occasionally led to goals. Rochelle keeper Micah Davidson stopped a shot from 25 yards out by Kianda Powell in the 33rd minute, but Grace Purcell was there to tap in the rebound.

Powell served a ball into the middle for Cano, who headed it home in the 13th minute.

“It was a really great ball from Kiandra,” Cano said. “She gave a really great service and I just saw it and it was perfectly placed. There was no pressure around me, so I decided to go for it.”

Another corner kick in the 35th minute made it 3-0 as Powell’s corner initially went to Erin Ball, who set up Abbie Lomahan for a goal.

The final Kaneland goal of the first half came off a corner kick as well.

With the seconds winding down, Kaneland hurried to take the kick and the ball ended up at the feet of Purcell, who directed it into the back of the net with 1.5 seconds left.

“I didn’t really think that we were going to score off it, so I just went in there and just stood there and it came to me,” she said. “I just turned and shot it. I didn’t really think about it.”

Becca Geringer scored the Knights’ final goal of the game in the 74th minute.

Rochelle rarely made forays into the Kaneland end with right back Taylor Emigh tackling the ball away from Holli Drew on the Hubs’ first really promising run of the game in the 15th minute.

In the 29th minute Rochelle pushed for an equalizer with a run up the right side from Drew, but Kaneland goalkeeper Emily Chapman dove to her right to stop the shot from 15 yards out.

Balanced offense key for Sycamore softball in win at Rochelle DAILY CHRONICLE

Madison Parks was 3 for 5 with two RBIs, Lexi Gordon was 2 for 5 with three RBIs and Addison Foulk went 2 for 2 with two runs. Parks also picked up the win in the circle, allowing one hit and one run in four innings and struck out seven.

Cristen Nottingham threw three scoreless innings, giving up one hit and striking out one.

“I thought our pitchers did a pretty

good job of hitting spots today,” Sycamore coach Jill Carpenter said. “We have been trying to focus a lot on that lately.

“Offensively I think we could have made some better adjustments sooner at the plate but we found a way to put the ball in play and that worked to our advantage.”

The Spartans improved to 9-15 overall on the season and are 3-10 in Northern Illinois Big 12 East.

DeKalb trounces LaSalle-Peru: The Barbs had four players with multiple RBIs and won 11-1 against LaSalle-Peru in DeKalb.

LONDON – In a major doping crackdown stretching back eight years, 31 athletes in six sports could be barred from competing in the Olympics after they were caught in retesting of drug samples from the 2008 Beijing Games, and other positive cases could emerge from the 2012 London Games.

The International Olympic Committee opened disciplinary proceedings Tuesday against the 31 unidentified athletes from 12 countries who competed in Beijing and were planning to take part in the Rio de Janeiro Games in August.

“This is a powerful strike against the cheats,” IOC President Thomas Bach said. “They show once again that dopers have no place to hide.”

The IOC said it also planned to reanalyze drug tests from the 2014 Sochi Winter Games after allegations samples were tampered with as part of a state-sponsored Russian doping program.

The positive cases from Beijing emerged from the recent retesting of 454 doping samples with “the very latest scientific analysis methods,” the IOC said.

The Olympic body stores samples for 10 years to allow for retesting with improved techniques, with athletes caught facing retroactive disqualification and loss of any medals.

The IOC said it could not immediately identify the athletes caught in the Beijing retests for legal reasons, saying it would inform the relevant national Olympic committees in the coming days.

“All those athletes infringing anti-doping rules will be banned from competing at the Olympic Games” in Rio, the IOC said after a teleconference meeting of its policy-making executive board.

Results of retesting of 250 samples from the London Olympics will be announced shortly, the IOC said. Those tests were also aimed at athletes planning to compete in Rio. The IOC said it would also undertake a “wider retesting program” of medalists from both the Beijing and London Games. Samples of athletes who could be promoted to medals following disqualification of drug cheats will also be retested.

The IOC also asked the World Anti-Doping Agency to launch a “fully-fledged investigation” into allegations that the drug-testing system in Sochi was subverted by Russian officials.

The IOC said it would ask the Lausanne anti-doping lab and WADA to proceed with analyzing Sochi samples “in the most sophisticated and efficient way possible.”

It’s unclear, however, how many samples are still intact for reliable retesting. Grigory Rodchenkov, the former head of the Russian anti-doping laboratory, told the New York Times last week that he gave Russian athletes a cocktail of drugs before the Olympics and switched tainted urine samples for clean ones during the games. He has offered to assist in retesting.

WADA said Tuesday it has written to Rodchenkov and offered to meet him “immediately” in Los Angeles. No date has been set.

John Paxson is demanding change.

The Bulls VP of basketball operations made that very clear on the final night of what was an immensely disappointing regular season, using that mid-April evening to all but call his collection of players soft.

“We need to make some changes,” Paxson said. “To me, in my mind, the biggest disappointment was this team lacked a collective fight to them. And I’ve never been around a good group of players or team that didn’t fight together. That’s just the truth.”

That change started Tuesday night.

Thanks to a weighted scrambling of ping-pong balls, the Bulls made their return to the NBA Draft Lottery for the first time since 2008, landing the No. 14 pick for the upcoming June 23 draft.

In other words, the worst-case scenario for the 42-40 team.

Not that it was much of a surprise, as the Bulls only had an 0.5 percent chance of landing the top pick, as well as just a 1.8 percent chance to move into the top three.

Landing draft talent hasn’t exactly been a strength of Forman’s lately.

Since selecting Jimmy Butler with the last pick of the first round in the 2011 draft, Forman has landed the likes of Marquis Teague, Tony Snell, Doug McDermott and Bobby Portis. Teague was a complete bust, while Snell is slowly leaning in that direction.

Gar Forman McDermott proved to be a solid rotation player, but came at the cost of two first-round draft picks to acquire, while the jury still is out on what Portis can become.

Your move, Gar. As far as what’s on Forman’s radar at that point guard spot, there’s talent in the cupboard. Kris Dunn would be an ideal fit for what Fred Hoiberg wants from his point guard, but likely won’t make it out of the top five.

That leaves the likes of Tyler Ulis and Dejounte Murray.

The wild card in all of this, however? How much change do the Bulls want exactly? Butler’s name will continue to float out there in trade rumors, with Boston a strong suitor.

Then there’s what’s going on in Minnesota. The Timberwolves and new coach Tom Thibodeau could be a perfect destination for Butler, with the Bulls getting the No. 5 pick overall and maybe the likes of Ricky Rubio, who also would be the perfect driveand-kick point guard for Hoiberg.

“We’ve got to take a look at everything,” Forman said. “We’ve got to explore all options, and I don’t think there’s anything that’s off the table when you have a disappointing year like this. With that said, obviously Jimmy has had a fantastic year. From where he was to where he’s gotten to, he’s become a very, very valuable player for us.”

Master easy art of cooking dried beans from scratch

Until I went off to college and became a vegetarian out of financial necessity, beans really weren’t a part of my life.

But once I found myself pinching pennies while sharing a house with three other women, beans became a great and affordable source of bulk and protein. And though the initial motivation was saving money, we eventually grew to love the unique flavors and textures of beans, and I have continued to cook with them ever since.

And the best way to make beans? Starting with dried beans. Why take the time to cook dried beans when you can find a wide variety of canned available? There are several reasons.

Dried beans cooked from scratch have a more uniform texture than most canned beans (some of which tend to get mushed in the can). Also, you can control what gets added to the beans (particularly salt). And they cost much less than canned beans. A 16-ounce bag of dried beans yields about 5 or 6 cups of cooked beans, while a 15-ounce can of cooked beans yields roughly 1½ cups. Finally, homemade beans freeze beautifully, so why not make a big batch on the weekend and use it in recipes later in the week?

But there are a few things to keep in mind regarding dried beans.

Dried beans seem to last forever on the shelf, but beware: The older the bean, the longer it will take to cook. So try to buy your beans from a store that has plenty of turnover.

There has been a long debate about whether to soak beans before cooking them. The main reason for the pre-soak is to speed up the cooking time. And a pre-soak does indeed do that, by about 30 minutes. But Cook’s Illustrated magazine has uncovered an even better reason. If you soak beans in salted water overnight, they not only absorb some of the salt (which seasons them), they also come out more tender. For years we all were told salt made beans tough, but it’s

offered cooking methods using both stovetop and a slow cooker. Whichever you choose, save the cooking liquid. It is delicious added to soups and stews.

Dried beans cooked from scratch

Master Recipe for Cooking Dried Beans Start to finish: 13 to 15 hours (15 minutes active) Servings: 10

1 pound dried beans 3 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons kosher salt, divided 1 medium yellow onion, quartered 1 medium carrot, cut crosswise into 4 pieces 1 celery stalk, cut crosswise into 4 pieces 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 sprigs fresh thyme

quite the contrary. So I recommend a pre-soak in salted water.

Acid of any kind, however – tomatoes, citrus, vinegar, wine, etc. – is the enemy. It will prevent the beans from cooking properly. If you want to add a touch of acid to your beans, add it only when the cooking is nearly done.

The basics for cooking almost all dried beans (except dried lentils and split peas, which cook so quickly you can make them from start to finish in about 20 minutes) are below. I won’t offer exact cooking times because the timing can vary widely depending on the variety and size of the beans, as well as how fresh they are. I have

In a large bowl or pot, dissolve 3 tablespoons of the salt in 4 quarts of water. Add the beans, stir, then cover and soak overnight at room temperature.

The next day, drain the beans and rinse them. In a large saucepan or stockpot, combine the beans with 7 cups of cold water. Stir in the remaining 2 teaspoons salt. Bring the mixture to a boil, skimming the scum that rises to the surface with a skimmer or slotted spoon (that scum is protein solids). Reduce the heat to a simmer and simmer the beans, regularly skimming the scum, until no more scum rises to the surface.

Add the onion, carrot, celery, garlic and thyme, then simmer for 30 to 60 minutes, or until the beans are just tender. Drain the beans, reserving the cooking liquid (if desired) and discard the onion, carrot, celery and thyme stalks. Use the beans in recipes or freeze them in 1- or 2-cup portions.

Slow Cooker Method: Soak the beans as described above, then drain and rinse them. In a slow cooker, combine the beans with the 2 teaspoons of salt, onion, carrot, celery, garlic and thyme. Add enough water to cover the beans by 1 inch, then cover and cook on high for 4 to 6 hours, or until completely tender.

Making granola is dead simple and ridiculously satisfying: You mix, bake, stir and then feel terrific about yourself and the pile of crunch you pull out of the oven.

It isn’t the same as hacking Oreos, ketchup or Sriracha at home. That stuff is difficult, and perfection is tough to achieve. But granola? A cinch. What you make at home not only will be as good as what you typically buy, I can guarantee it will be better. Fresher, too.

And, best of all, it will be exactly what you want. Don’t like raisins?

Skip ’em. Love cashews? Add ’em. Notice, I didn’t say it would be cheaper.

Good artisanal granola, made with excellent ingredients and no difficult-to-pronounce additives, is expensive in the stores and only slightly less expensive to make at home.

Savings might not be the prime reason to go DIY, but there are others: Homemade granola is fabulously delicious, pure and bespoke; the process is easy, fun and an all-around feel-good; and the cookielike bites you also can make from the mix are both adorable and tasty. Perhaps this explains why, developing the accompanying recipe for you, I worked through what must have been a field of oats and now have six quarts of granola in my pantry.

You probably can make granola with something other than oats, but oats are the usual backbone of the mix.

Look for old-fashioned rolled oats.

Instant or quick-cooking ones won’t produce the texture that’s such a big part of why we love granola.

The real musts in granola are oats, some kind of oil and a sweetener. I’ve seen recipes without or with just a token amount of sugar, but I think it’s nice to have something sweet to play off the earthy flavors in the granola and the salt, which I consider a necessity as well.

Once you’ve got these basics, just about everything else is up to you. In the accompanying recipe, I’ve added a few fun ingredients: millet and flax for crunch; wheat germ for depth (if you’re gluten-free, just add more oats); large coconut flakes for beauty, flavor and chew; vanilla to round all the flavors; and cocoa powder for surprise.

The combo is great, but you can mix it up by adding spices, if you’d like, or omitting some of the crunches. You can even leave out the cocoa, but why would you want to?

Because I’m a big fan of dried fruit, I add it to the granola, but at the very end, so it doesn’t get baked. Again, use what you love: snipped apricots, pears,

figs, dates or apples (use scissors to cut the fruit into bite-size bits), golden or black raisins, cherries or cranberries.

The key is to make sure the dried fruit is moist. Shriveled fruit is hard to eat and harder to enjoy. If yours isn’t moist, give the fruit a good soak in hot water, pat it dry and then stir it into the just-baked granola.

If you want to make my Granola Bites – granola mixed with brown rice syrup, pressed into muffin tins and baked until they’re super-crispy and puckish (think round energy bars) – spoon out the three cups of granola you’ll need to make them and add the fruit to what’s left in the bowl.

This is definitely a make-it-yourown project.

Dorie Greenspan’s Cocoa Crunch Fruit and Nut Granola 14 servings (6½ cups to 7 cups granola)

1/4 cup (packed) light brown sugar 1/4 cup honey 3 tablespoons coconut oil or olive oil 2 cups old-fashioned oats (not instant or quick-cooking) 1 cup mixed chopped nuts, such as almonds, pecans, walnuts, pistachios or hazelnuts 1/2 cup hulled, unsalted pumpkin seeds 1/2 cup hulled, unsalted sunflower seeds 2 tablespoons wheat germ (may substitute old-fashioned oats)

2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 2 tablespoons millet (optional, but nice for crunch) 1 tablespoon flaxseed (optional) 1 teaspoon fine sea salt 1½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut flakes or shredded coconut 1/2 cup moist, plump dried fruit, such as raisins, cranberries, cherries, snipped apricots, apples and/or pears Position racks in the upper and lower thirds of the oven; preheat to 325 degrees F. Have two 9-by-13-inch Pyrex baking dishes at hand.

(If you have only metal pans, line them with parchment paper.)

Combine the brown sugar, honey and coconut oil or olive oil in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and cook, stirring, just until the sugar dissolves.

Combine the oats, nuts, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, wheat germ, cocoa powder, millet and flaxseed, if using, and the sea salt in a large mixing bowl. Pour in the warm oil mixture, add the vanilla extract and stir, preferably with a flexible spatula, until everything is evenly moistened. Scrape the mixture into the baking dishes, gently spreading it out evenly. Bake on the upper and lower racks for 20 minutes, then stir, making sure to dislodge any bits that may have stuck to the baking dishes. Rotate the baking dishes top to bottom and front to back, stir and bake for 20

minutes.

Stir once again, but this time stir in the shredded or flaked coconut. Bake for 5 minutes or until the coconut is very lightly toasted; the total baking time should be between 45 and 50 minutes. Scrape the baked granola into a big bowl, then stir in the dried fruit.

Once the granola comes to room temperature, use your hands to break up the clumps that will have formed.

Variation: To make Granola Bites, preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. Use baker’s spray to generously grease the 24 wells of two standard-size muffin pans. Combine 3 cups of the baked granola (without dried fruit), 1/2 cup of brown rice syrup and 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a mixing bowl, stirring to coat evenly. Divide the mixture evenly among the muffin pan wells, using the bottom of a jar or glass wrapped in plastic wrap to compact the granola. Bake (middle rack) for 18 to 20 minutes, rotating the pans front to back halfway through, until the syrup, which will have bubbled, has settled down and the bites are deeply golden. Transfer the muffin pans to wire racks to cool for 5 minutes, then use a table knife to pop the bites out. Place them on racks to cool to room temperature before serving or storing.

Nutrition per serving (using coconut oil): 260 calories, 6 g protein, 25 g carbohydrates, 16 g fat, 5 g saturated fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 150 mg sodium, 4 g dietary fiber, 12 g sugar.

The chest may have a stand with very short legs because the Chinese used to do business at floor level, not behind a counter. No nails were used making the chest, just dowels and glue. Each chest had rows of 36 to over 100 small, labeled drawers. At a January 2016 auction at James D. Julia, auctioneers offered an antique elmwood apothecary chest with 80 drawers.

Small collectibles, such as coins, netsukes, buttons, sewing supplies, Star Wars toys, CDs or marbles, can be stored in this type of cabinet. There are many companies selling modern copies. This antique auctioned chest with a stand is 43 inches high, 36 inches wide and 12 inches deep. It sold for $948, less than the price of a new one on the internet. *** Q: Can you give me a general idea of the value of a mintcondition Schultz and Dooley set of steins? They are characters from Utica Club beer commercials from the early 1970s.

Schultz is nearly a foot high and Dooley over half that height.

A: Utica Club beer was first made in 1933 by West End Brewing Co. of Utica, New York. The company was started in 1888 by Francis Xavier Matt. Schultz and Dooley beer steins appeared in TV commercials advertising Utica Club beer from 1959 to 1964. Jonathan Winters provided the voices for the “talking” beer steins. The steins were given to bars and stores as promotional items and were so popular they were later offered for sale. The steins were sold in sets. Only 5,000 sets were made in 1959. The brewery company name became the F.X. Matt Brewing Co. in 1980. It’s still in business and offers a new character beer stein each November.

Value depends on rarity of the edition you have. The 1959 set in good condition sells for $175-$200. *** Q: I have a glass cup that was my father’s. The glass is red and has a clear handle and pattern around the bottom.

His name, Wayne, is on the glass, along with the date 1924.

I’m assuming it was from some event. Was it a special order or did they engrave it on the spot? Do you know how that process worked?

A: Your red glass is called Ruby Stain, and the deeply faceted band on the bottom is called Button Arches. The pattern was first issued by Duncan Glass Co. in 1885, by the U.S. Glass Co. in 1897, and Jefferson Glass Co. about 1910.

Yours is probably the later issue. Items like this were sold as souvenirs for events and places all over the country. Most souvenir pieces, including pitchers, sugar and creamers, tumblers, cups, mugs, toothpicks and paperweights, were ruby stained, though a few were green. Visitors could buy a piece of ruby-stained glass and have it inscribed with the location, event, date and the name of a special person. The wording was either acid-etched or wheel engraved. Your mug might have been for a christening, birthday or a visit to a special place. It’s worth about $10 to $25 to a collector.

Q: I have a set of eight plates with center pictures of different flowers and gold trim. The plates are about 6 inches across. The letters on the back look like an “O” and “L,” and “Rove. Saxe” is marked over the initials “E.S.” I’d like to know who made these plates and how old they are.

A: The initials “E.S.” stand for Erdmann Schlegelmilch and the mark on your plates actually is “Prov. Saxe,” which was used by the Erdmann Schlegelmilch Porcelain Factory.

The factory was founded by Leonard Schlegelmilch (18231898) and named for his father, Erdmann. It was in business in Suhl, Thuringia, Germany, from 1861 to 1937. The company

made decorated and undecorated porcelain. The “Prov. Saxe” mark was used beginning in 1902 and was one of several marks used by the company. Some of the 7 1/2-inch plates with floral decoration have sold online for less than $10. *** Q: I have a “Blender Queen,” a modern-looking glass jar with a streamlined plastic base and a top that looks like a spaceship. It plugs in, push the on button, the blades inside revolve and you get a “smoothie.” It seems to be a relative of the Waring Blender. Is this the inspiration for the Waring Blender or a later copy? Is it sellable?

A: The Waring Blender was financed and manufactured by the popular band leader, Fred Waring. An inventor went to him for money and Waring put $25,000 into a company to make the then-unique product. It was patented in 1938 and sold as the “Miracle Mixer,” but the name was quickly changed to the Waring Blender. It cost $29.75. It was a huge success and was used in hospitals for special diets and scientific experiments, as well as for what we now call “smoothies.” Sixty-seven companies made similar products.

Some are called liquefiers. Your Blender Queen was made in the 1960s.The push-button on and off switch was an improvement created in 1963. We saw a working plastic Waring “Drink Mixer” for sale at a flea market in August 2015 for $30.

Even though the Zika virus has existed in other countries for decades, no link to microcephaly had been previously seen until it was reported in Brazil in 2015. However, many of the countries where the virus has lived have very poor or non-existent public health systems for recognizing and reporting birth defects.

Now scientists report a surge in microcephaly also occurred in French Polynesia after a Zika outbreak in 2013-14. It also has occurred in some U.S. women who traveled briefly to South America.

• Fetal ultrasound study found defects.

In a relatively small study in Brazil, ultrasound studies of the fetus revealed brain birth defects in 29 percent of women with a rash caused by Zika virus infection, but in none (0 percent) of a group of women with a rash not due to Zika virus infection.

• Zika virus can infect the brain. New studies find the virus can infect the brain of various animals, and human brain cells in a laboratory dish. Thus, it is plausible the virus could cause brain disorders.

Dear Dr. K: In a recent column, you said doctors still were conducting research to see if the Zika virus does, as feared, cause birth defects – particularly, babies born with small heads and brains. Has there been any new information on that?

Dear Reader: There has, and it’s important. The new information was summarized in articles in the New England Journal of Medicine in April.

First, a brief refresher. Zika virus is carried by a particular kind of mosquito known as the Aedes mosquito. When it bites a person, the virus can enter the person’s body. Most people who catch the Zika virus have only mild and temporary symptoms. However, early evidence indicated birth defects might occur in the fetuses of some pregnant women who were infected in the first four to five months of pregnancy.

The most dramatic such birth defect in babies was very small heads and brains, called “microcephaly.” Microcephaly is rare, and can be caused by other viral infections, including rubella (“German measles”).

The Zika virus has lived in Africa and Asia for 70 years. Last year, it moved to South America, and has been spreading north, into the Caribbean, and toward Mexico, the United States and Canada.

Will it reach the U.S. and Canada? No one can predict the future, but we know the mosquito that carries the virus already is present in about 30 states of the U.S. The World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced in early April it is likely the Zika virus is a cause of microcephaly. New studies have led them to this conclusion. Let’s look at those studies, and the reason they have

The coconut cake with custard frosting, chocolate cake with fluffy white frosting (and chocolate drippings), cheesecake, pecan pie, chocolate mousse and – believe it or not – the fruitcake recipe, which is filled with nuts but not “cakey,” all are favorites of mine. I also have served the almond coffeecake, peanut butter pie and sweet potato pie to friends while entertaining, and received the ultimate compliment – a request for “just a little more.”

All of the recipes in my two cookbooklets have been used again and again. Some of them have won blue ribbons at county fairs; others have been featured on the covers of women’s magazines. In today’s deal, perspective is relevant. How should South plan the play in four spades after West leads the heart king?

In the auction, North used a transfer bid, then offered his partner a choice of games by rebidding three no-trump. South, with his three-card spade support and lack of a club stopper, retreated to four spades.

In a suit contract, declarer typically counts losers by looking at his hand and taking dummy’s high cards into account. Here, though, with dummy having the long trumps, South must study the deal from his partner’s perspective. Looking at the North hand and noting South’s honors, declarer should see four potential losers: one heart and three clubs. Next, counting winners, South has nine: five spades, one heart and three diamonds.

Perhaps diamonds are 3-3, but that is against the odds. Instead, declarer should trump dummy’s third club in his hand, the ruff in the shorter trump hand both gaining an extra spade trick and eliminating a loser.

South takes the heart king with his ace and loses a club. The defenders win, cash the heart queen, and shift to a trump. Declarer concedes a second club, takes the next trump in the dummy, ruffs the last club, plays a diamond to the queen, draws the last trump, and claims.
