Graduation stories: Reminders of possibilities The news game is more repetitive than you might think.

For every story that comes along the likes of which you’ve never seen, there are probably 100 that you do year in, year out.

With some of these perennial stories, reporters and editors have to hunt for a new angle every year, really try hard to bring something new to the story, to tell it in a way that hasn’t been done before.

High school graduation stories, however, aren’t like that.

The sources are all there in front of you, and when you talk to them, they bring the story to life easily.

Stories about graduation ceremonies almost always have this pulse of optimism in them, the students going through this ceremony that marks the largest milestone in most of their lives to date.

Graduation ceremonies are one moment in time where people seem keenly aware that they are in a transitional phase, that the future and all of its potential awaits them.

The students’ perspective is pretty much the same every year – they have plans and hopes for what’s next, they have mem-

Reading their quotes, it’s easy to think back and remember that time in my own life.

For those who have graduated and those who will in the weeks to come, I hope that they remember how they feel at this point in their lives, with so much of their story yet to be written, and revisit that feeling from time to time.

Circumstances change, but not everything has to change with them.

Even decades after we turn our tassels, life is happier when we remember that there are always possibilities and potential.

TODAY’S TALKER FACEBOOK CEO WILL MEET WITH GLENN BECK, OTHER CONSERVATIVES

NEW YORK – Radio host Glenn Beck and American Enterprise Institute president Arthur Brooks are some of the conservative leaders Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg plans to meet with this week.

The meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, comes after a report that Facebook employed bias in the way it selected stories for its “Trending Topics” feature. A report in the tech blog Gizmodo claimed that Facebook downplays conservative news subjects.

Facebook denies that report, which relied upon a single anonymous individual with self-described conservative leanings.

Nonetheless, Zuckerberg said the Menlo Park, California, company is investigating the matter and has invited conservative leaders to meet with him.

Others invited include Zac Moffatt, the co-founder of conservative technology company Targeted Victory, and Dana Perino, co-host of “The Five” on Fox News Channel.

“I want to have a direct conversation about what Facebook stands for and how we can be sure our platform stays as open as possible,” Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post last week.

Facebook has said that a series of checks and balances – involving both software formulas and humans – ensures that stories displayed in the “trending topics” section aren’t biased. In a blog post last week, the company also linked to a 28-page internal document it uses to determine trending topics, after the Guardian published a similar document that was leaked to it.

REMEMBERING THE FALLEN Law enforcement community honors those who died on duty

By BRETT ROWLAND browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Dozens gathered Monday to remember the more than 125 law enforcement officers who died in service to their communities in 2015.

Members of local law enforcement agencies were joined by family and community members along with DeKalb County prosecutors for the solemn ceremony at the DeKalb County Courthouse in Sycamore.

Similar ceremonies were held across the country. President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day in 1962.

It was the third such memorial ceremony held in DeKalb County.

Illinois State Police Lt. Col. Jim Winters, who will soon be joining

the Sycamore Police Department as a deputy chief, gave the keynote address. He spoke of the sacrifices officers make daily in protecting their communities.

“A police officer comes to work and does the job not for the notoriety or the glamour. ... He or she does it because they know they are part of something bigger and better than themselves,” Winters said. “And they are willing to pay that price. They matter because they pay that price and they ask for nothing in return.

They are just doing their job.”

Tracy Hooper, 32, said it was important for her to attend the memorial to support her husband, Sycamore police officer Ryan Hooper, who serves as the Sycamore High School resource officer and organized the event. Holding their children – Elea-

nor, 5, and Edison, 3 – Hooper said she could relate with many of the sacrifices Winters mentioned. She also said she was glad to see more people turning out for the event.

“It’s a larger crowd,” she said.

“Every year, it’s growing.”

Ryan Hooper, 32, said it was important for all county law enforcement agencies to gather together for a joint ceremony because “we’re all one big family.”

Sycamore Police Chief Glenn Theriault said the event was especially important for young officers as a reminder of the “sobering realities” of what can be a dangerous job.

Monday’s ceremony highlighted the 2015 deaths of Illinois law enforcement officers Dwight Maness of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office; Craig Whisenand, Tazewell County

Sheriff’s Office; and George Nissen, Stone Park Police Department.

Sycamore police officer Mike Eide sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” and Chaplain Tim Perry delivered the invocation and benediction.

After the gun salute by the Northern Illinois Police Department, Theriault reminded everyone about the officers who would be working that night.

“As you go home tonight, lay your kids to rest and put your head on the pillow, please think of Deputy Maness, Deputy Whisenand, Officer Nissen and their families,” he said.

“And think of the 20 some officers that are going to be out patrolling the streets of DeKalb County this evening and pray for their safety.

And let’s encourage that safety on a daily basis.”

Sandwich Class of 2016 celebrates A

s parents, other family members and friends looked on Sunday afternoon, 155 members of the Sandwich High School Class of 2016 received their diplomas in the school’s gym.

The salutatory address was given by Anthony Vruno. Valedictory addresses were given by eight graduates: Samantha Collins, Kendra Donahue, Rachel Goodwin, Michael Mendoza, Emily Ness, Emma Roberts, Ryan Vegrzyn and Colton Watros.

He was born Oct. 17, 1958, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas M. and Elizabeth A.. Butler (Romano) of Malta, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents; older brother, John; and youngest brother, Darryl; his paternal grandparents, Glenn R. and Evelyn L. Butler of Malta; and his maternal grandparents, John R. and Inness Romano of Lockport. Also by his aunts, Delores and Beth; and uncle, Roger.

He is survived by his older brother, Richard; and his younger sisters, Michelle and Pamala.

Also surviving are his aunts, Glenda Butler and Joan McCallum; uncle, Steve Butler; and many cousins including, Paul, Lee, and Ross Butler, and their respective families.

His ashes were scattered near the final resting place of his brothers and over a family farm in Malta, as were those of his father.

A private memorial service was held at the Malta Cemetery, which included the readings

By KATIE SMITH ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – City Council members on Monday voted, 7-1, in favor of a hotly debated annexation agreement that will prepare to add 300 acres of residential development to the rural area northwest of the city.

Mayor Ken Mundy and council members Curt Lang, Chuck Stowe, Pete Paulsen, Becky Springer, Rick Kramer, and Janice Tripp voted in favor of the agreement at Monday’s meeting.

First Ward Alderman Alan Bauer was the only council member who opposed the agreement. Third Ward Alderman Steve Braser was absent.

For the past few months, the Syc-

amore Sportsman’s Club feared the annexation threatened to push them out of the area. On Monday, however, Scott Larson, an attorney representing the club, announced the group at last felt comfortable moving forward with the agreement.

“The mayor alluded to [this] a couple of meetings ago, as I recall, when he talked about the fact that at the national and the state levels we seem to be just screaming at each other flying past each other,” Larson said. “Whereas here at the local level, when folks have to live together, they have a tendency to be more civilized.

As a Sycamore native, I’m proud to be a part of that tradition.”

The council at its May 2 meetings

tabled a decision on the proposed agreement, so Larson could further amend an easement agreement between the property owners and the Sycamore Sportsman’s Club.

“As a result of all of this as of today, the Sportsman’s Club doesn’t have any objection to the city’s continuation forward with these annexation alliances,” Larson said Monday.

The new easement agreement addresses the club’s prime contentions with the original proposed annexation agreement. Should council members eventually choose to allow petitioners to move forward with the annexation, property owners must sign an easement agreement, barring them from filing nuisance complaints

against the club, Larson said.

The easement agreement also includes a provision allowing club members to enter private property within the annexed area if they need to retrieve a wounded or hunted animal, he said.

Looking ahead, the property owners must devise and present an annexation concept plan for council approval before moving forward, Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy said.

“As we know from the topographical maps that we recall, not all of the 300 acres is buildable upon, and so there will have to be some negotiations with wetland and drainage and those kinds of things that we’ve been talking about so long,” Mundy said.

trict’s teacher union, the DeKalb Classroom Teachers Association, further cloud the budget picture.

The DCTA and the district agreed to a three-year contract in 2013 that called for a freeze on salaries in the first year. For 2014-15, the contract allowed for a 1.1 percent pay-scale increase and a “step” increase of 2.12 percent, and for 2015-16, the “step” increase remained the same, but the pay scale increased an additional 1.25 percent.

Without getting into specifics of the negotiations, Gorla said the agreement would almost certainly mean more money for teachers.

“It will be an increase,” she said.

“The question is the magnitude of the increase.”

School board members must to adopt a budget by October. Gorla said the board would likely pass a tentative spending plan in August.

Administrators have proposed cutting student activity buses ($48,400), eliminating five union teaching jobs ($340,000), cutting summer custodial help ($10,000) and holding off on hiring a tech support worker ($54,000), according to school board documents.

Tuesday’s budget discussion is aimed at getting feedback from the school board on where to focus spending priorities in the meantime, Gorla said.

The experimental program allows high school students to apply for federal Pell grant money to pay for college courses. The “dual enrollment” program is designed to help students from lower-income backgrounds.

The Education Department says the administration will invest about $20 million in the 2016-17 school year to help about 10,000 students.

On Monday, the administration announced 44 colleges that are expected to participate.

Education Secretary John B. King Jr. says too many students in need aren’t getting challenging coursework to help prepare and motivate them beyond high school.

According to the department, less than 10 percent of children born in the bottom fourth of household incomes earn a bachelor’s degree by age 25, compared with more than 50 percent in the top fourth.

Under Secretary of Education Ted Mitchell said participating high school students would begin using their Pell eligibility while participating in the dual-enrollment program. The goal, he said, is that this program would lead directly to careers or a transfer into a four-year degree program for students.

“Rather than burning Pell dollars, these Pell dollars will accelerate students’ trajectory toward completing a degree on time, or early, at cost, or lower cost,” Mitchell told reporters after the selected colleges were announced.

Pell amounts change each year. For the 2016-17 award year that begins in July, the maximum award is $5,815. The amount a student receives varies, depending on financial need, cost of attendance, status as a full-time or part-time student, and other factors.

Students can receive Pell grants for no more than 12 semesters or roughly six years of college.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. military acted properly on the night of the deadly 2012 attacks in Benghazi, Libya, according to leaked testimony from a retired, three-star Army general who served as chief lawyer for Republicans on the House committee investigating the attacks.

Retired Army Lt. Gen. Dana Chipman “repeatedly commended the military’s actions on the night of the attacks during closed interviews with Defense Department officials,” including a Jan. 8 interview with former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Democrats on the committee say.

Chipman, a former judge advocate general for the Army, served as chief counsel for Republicans on the House Benghazi panel from August 2014 until January.

Trump questions value of data, worrying GOP

By BILL BARROW The Associated Press ATLANTA – Donald Trump says he plans to win the White House largely on the strength of his personality, not by leaning heavily on complex voter data operations that have become a behind-the-scenes staple in modern presidential campaigns.

Shortly after Trump explained his approach in an Associated Press interview – data are “overrated,” he said – one of the presumptive Republican nominee’s top advisers tried to clarify the remarks.

Rick Wiley told AP the Trump campaign will indeed tap the Republican Party’s massive cache of voter information.

The national Republican Party has spent massive sums of money to develop the database since President Barack Obama’s election set a new standard for using data in national campaigns, from deciding where to send a candidate and how to spend advertising dollars to making sure supporters cast a ballot.

The back-and-forth in the Trump camp leaves Republicans and Democrats alike wondering just how committed the candidate actually is to what has become accepted wisdom among political professionals. Some Republicans worry that Trump risks ceding potential advantages to likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton if he’s not willing to invest the money required to keep updating the data, and then use it effectively.

“It’s a big risk,” said Chris Wilson, who ran an expansive data operation for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Trump’s stiffest competition in the Republican primaries. Jeremy Bird, who worked for President Barack Obama’s data-rich campaign, said: “Flying blind is nuts.”

“At a big picture level, sure, Barack Obama got the votes – his bio, his policies, his ability to communicate,” Bird said. “But we wanted to do everything we could to get him and get his message to the right people.”

Jacobs, who worked for a former Trump rival, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, said Trump is an outlier in being uninterested in data. The RNC and private groups, such as the billionaire conservative activist brothers Charles and David Koch, have spent hundreds of millions on their data programs since Obama’s election.

Recalling sunnier days of growth, low unemployment and budget surpluses under her husband, Hillary Clinton is telling Americans that Bill Clinton will be “in charge of revitalizing the economy” if she wins the White House.

And his agenda was driven by support for free trade deals, including one that gave China better access to the U.S. market, that are held responsible by elements of both parties for driving jobs out of the country.

Still, in those pre-9/11 days, it’s a stretch of peace and prosperity like Americans haven’t seen since and with her latest remarks, in Kentucky, Hillary Clinton is more firmly laying out how important he would be to her agenda.

The situation is highly unusual: Not only would Clinton be the first president to have a “First Dude,” she’d also be the first to have a former president in the East Wing.

Late in Clinton’s presidency, unemployment dropped to 3.9 percent, its lowest level since 1970. It’s 5 percent now – and he set a record in monthly job growth in the post-World War II era. Growth averaged 3.8 percent, better than the record under Ronald Reagan and a far cry from the 0.5 percent of the last quarter or the 1.4 percent of the quarter before. But Clinton also came to office when a recession was ending; Barack Obama stepped into a worsening one that would be unrivaled since the Depression.

“Broadly shared prosperity is what President Clinton is known for, so I am thrilled Hillary is deploying my old boss,” former Clinton aide Paul Begala said. “Wherever two or more are gathered, there, too, should he be.”

Campaigning in a smoky diner in Paducah, Kentucky, on Monday, Clinton was surrounded by people who affectionately recalled previous visits by the Clintons. Bill Clinton campaigned in the town right before the 1992 election that made him president.

Classes at Energym’s new Genoa satellite location, 407 S. Sycamore Road in Genoa, will begin June 7, with a grand opening near the start of the Olympic games in the works for August, owner Andy Morreale said.

“The new location will have pretty much everything we have here,” Morreale said.

The Genoa gym’s new 4,700-squarefoot storefront will house the same gymnastics and tumbling courses as its Sycamore gym, excluding team and advanced-level gymnastics, Morreale said.

Energym has been a part of DeKalb County since 1988, and moved to Sycamore in 2000, Morreale said. But a lack of Genoa students prompted the owner to open up shop on Sycamore Road.

“We didn’t have a lot of customers coming to the Sycamore location from [Genoa], so we were looking to expand out to that location,” he said.

Submitted petition latest step toward redistricting reform Frustrated voters who are tired of the political and governmental status quo in dysfunctional Illinois are a step closer to being able to vote for real reform.

We speak of redistricting reform that would bring greater accountability to the Illinois House and Senate, as promised by the Independent Map Amendment.

A huge effort by the Independent Maps group led to last week’s filing of more than 570,000 signatures on petitions that support redistricting reform.

The group had already culled about 50,000 signatures that were duplicates or illegible, meaning that those submitted have a better chance of being accepted and counted toward the 290,216 valid signatures needed for the amendment to be placed on the November ballot.

The proposal would block politicians from drawing new district lines every 10 years that favor their own interests.

For Illinois politicians, the power to draw these House and Senate districts has been the power to protect incumbents, punish political foes, eliminate competition, and basically select their own voters – which is the reverse of how things ought to work.

As explained by its supporters, the Independent Map Amendment would establish a nonpartisan, independent commission that would be tasked with drawing state legislative districts “in a way that is transparent and open to the public.”

The current system, “controlled by legislators with little public involvement,” would be scrapped.

The Independent Redistricting Commission would consist of 11 members.

They would be selected from applicants to the Illinois auditor general. Anyone could apply.

A three-member Applicant Review Panel would be selected at random from applicants to the auditor general, and this group would select a pool of 100 potential commissioners, “who would be diverse and free from conflicts of interest.”

The four leaders of the Illinois House and Senate (two Democrats and two Republicans) could remove up to five potential commissioners from the list.

Afterward, the Applicant Review Panel would select seven of the 11 commission members, with no more than two of the seven affiliated with the same political party. The four legislative leaders would choose the final four commissioners.

Then it would be time for the Independent Redistricting Commission to get to work in an open and transparent process that would produce maps that ignore politics but instead are designed for the best interests of the public.

For the newly drawn maps to become law, at least seven of the 11 commissioners would have to support them, with at least two Democrats, two Republicans and three independents voting yes.

If they fail to meet the deadline, then a special commissioner for redistricting would be appointed by the state Supreme Court (the chief justice and a judge from the opposing party) and given two months to draw the maps in an open and nonpartisan manner.

This system is far preferable to how it’s done now, where politicians use software and voting data to secretly draw boundaries that favor the party in power, and the public has no real say in the outcome before legislative and gubernatorial approval.

“Entrenched politicians,” warns the Independent Maps group, might file objections to the Independent Map Amendment. Indeed, the first lawsuit against the redistricting reform amendment was filed Wednesday in Cook County court.

We believe strongly that bringing back accountability to elections, through fairly drawn district maps, is key to restoring responsive, responsible government in Illinois.

Hundreds of thousands of Illinoisans who signed petitions obviously agree.

We support the Independent Maps group as it continues to fight for a redistricting revolution in Illinois.

ANOTHER VIEW

Subverting the Olympic ideal Before the 2014 Olympic Games opened in Sochi, President Vladimir Putin of Russia declared, “I would like the participants, fans, journalists and all those who watch the Games on television to see a new Russia, see its face and possibilities, take a fresh and unbiased look at the country.”

The comment was meant to suggest rising pride in Russia after so many years of uncertainty and tumult. Now it is clear that Putin and his cronies have themselves sullied, in yet one more way, the new Russia they wanted to portray in a better light.

The latest evidence is a detailed report in the New York Times that Russian officials clandestinely carried out a doping program at the Sochi Games by giving athletes performance-enhancing drugs and then tampering with their urine samples to cover it up. The Times account comes from the director of the Russian anti-doping agency at the time, who played a central role and has since fled Russia. The doping involved at least 15 Russian medal winners, some of the country’s biggest stars; Russia won the most medals in the Games. None of the athletes was caught using the drugs at the time.

The director, Grigory Rodchenkov, recalled how a man from the Russian security services helped pry open the supposedly tamper-proof bottles that are standard at international competitions and replace drug-tainted urine from the athletes with clean urine collected earlier. For hours each night during the Games, Russians worked in a shadow laboratory lit by a single lamp, passing bottles of urine through

a small hole in a wall, putting the clean ones in place to be tested the next day.

Responding to a German television report in 2014 alleging the existence of a sophisticated and well-established system of doping in Russian sport, the World Anti-Doping Agency investigated and issued a report in November that identified Rodchenkov as the linchpin. Rodchenkov admitted his role in the doping to the Times (but denied a charge in the report that he was part of a conspiracy to extort money from athletes to cover it up).

Russia was provisionally suspended from international track and field competition, and in the coming weeks, leaders of the sport’s global governing body will decide whether to lift a ban ahead of the Olympics this summer in Rio de Janeiro. The CBS program “60 Minutes” also aired a report May 8 on Russian doping practices.

This audacious cheating resonates beyond sports. The Russian Federal Security Service, a successor to the KGB, reportedly took part in the doping operation, subverting the Olympic ideal and soiling one of the globe’s most prestigious events.

Such moral vacuity has been evident in the destruction of Russia’s nascent democracy, the siphoning off of its riches by Putin’s cronies, the harassment and murder of Putin’s foes, the promotion of dishonest propaganda and the way Russia has sought to undermine Ukraine with violence.

Russia’s behavior in Sochi makes the Reagan proverb “trust, but verify” seem quaint. There can be no trusting as long as Putin is in charge.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

They worried in particular about the effect on Senate races, in which they’re defending seven seats in states carried

by Barack Obama in 2012. Obama won all but one of those states by relatively small margins, but the fear was that, in an era of straight ticket voting, a weak presidential nominee would pull down-ballot Republicans down to defeat.

The point about straight ticket voting is correct. Only 26 of 435 congressional districts voted for one party’s presidential nominee and the other party’s candidate for House of Representatives in 2012 – the lowest number since 1920.

It’s not obvious that voters have lost the capacity to split their tickets.

Perhaps they just haven’t seen the need to in years when presidential nominees and congressional candidates have been closely aligned. Given Trump’s heterodox and rapidly changing platform, this year could be different.

That’s consistent with primary season polling in target state Senate races, in which the numbers are roughly consistent with prevailing partisan

patterns. Republican candidates could be hurt if Trump depresses Republican turnout. But as he has pointed out, accurately, Republican presidential primary turnout has been up this year, while Democratic primary turnout has been lower and is down from 2008.

Meanwhile, some recent polls suggest that Republican voters are coalescing around Trump. Quinnipiac has him running even or better with Clinton in Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio, target states without whose electoral votes Barack Obama would have been defeated in 2012.

National polls by Reuters/Ipsos and Public Policy Polling show about equal percentages of Republicans supporting Trump and Democrats supporting Clinton, though Clinton’s numbers may well rise after Bernie Sanders stops campaigning.

Still, these are signs that Trump is consolidating Republican voters, perhaps more effectively than Republican elites.

In addition, polling after Trump’s 50 percent-plus victories in six Northeastern primaries shows the general election race tightening, with Clinton leading him by an average margin of 47 percent to 41 percent.

You could argue that those are disappointing numbers for both candidates.

The universally known Clinton is running behind Barack Obama’s 51 percent

majority and seems not to be benefiting from the recent small, but possibly critical, increase in Obama’s job approval rating (from 46 percent in January to 49 percent in April). And the universally known Trump is running well below 46 percent, the lowest vote share for any major party nominee since 2000.

I have noticed something else that may be significant in recent polls: The number of undecided voters seems to be increasing – rather than decreasing like it usually does when nominees are determined.

This could result from cross-pressures. Majorities of voters have unfavorable feelings toward both candidates, and probably a record share, about 25 percent, has unfavorable feelings toward both. Apparently, some voters are having trouble deciding which repellent candidate to vote for.

That’s just one question still to be determined. Another is turnout. Will upscale suburbanites appalled by Trump or young people not enchanted with Clinton bother to vote?

So far the irresistible force doesn’t seem to have moved the immovable object as far as many people expected.

But it’s too early to say it won’t.

Public works professionals are always there when needed

By NOAH CARMICHAEL For The Daily Chronicle Since 1960, the nation has dedicated a week each year to call attention to the importance of public works in community life.

But what exactly is public works?

According to the American Public Works Association, public works is described as “the combination of physical assets, management practices, policies and personnel necessary for government to provide and sustain structures and services essential to the welfare and acceptable quality of life for its citizens.”

But what exactly does this mean?

Let’s start with “physical assets,” which are all around us and oftentimes forgotten.

Briefly looking around the DeKalb area, physical assets such as roads, bridges, water towers and utility poles are apparent, yet other assets such as the vast underground network of pipes and cables providing drinking water, natural gas, electricity and internet services are harder

to see. The majority of these assets are approaching a century in age and have been in service for many decades.

The “management practices, policies and personnel” is where the magic really happens.

How a community plans, manages and operates its public utilities is critical to the quality of life of its residents and visitors. A well-run public works department is a partnership between elected officials and a public works staff planning and prioritizing within a set budget. With aging infrastructure being a major issue, bold steps are often needed to support public infrastructure projects, sometimes including tax or rate increases.

Over the past few years, local officials throughout DeKalb County have taken steps to upgrade our infrastructure and improve the overall health and safety of our communities. The dedicated public works staff of the city of DeKalb, city of Sycamore, town of Cortland, and DeKalb County are key to implementing

these initiatives.

Each has unique challenges in operating and maintaining its respective roads, bridges and public utilities. From the elected officials, to the department managers, to the day laborers, all play an important role in providing safe, reliable and cost-effective services to their communities.

Public works’ primary role is to provide “services essential to the welfare and acceptable quality of life for its citizens.” This is really at the heart of public works – serving the community. Whether it’s plowing snow when the rest of us are warm inside, fixing a broken water main in the middle of the night or restoring power after a strong storm, public works professionals are there when we need them.

Why? Because they all share a strong desire to serve their residents and make their communities the very best places to live.

As we enter the 2016 construction season, the aging infrastructure will again require repair, maintenance

and replacement. In years past, projects have included the replacement of Coltonville Road bridge, the extension of Bethany Road and water main replacement on First Street.

Our public works folks face a never-ending battle in achieving their goal of providing “services essential to the welfare and acceptable quality of life for its citizens.”

This week is designated National Public Works Week, with the theme, “Always There,” which showcases the pervasiveness of public works in America.

As beneficiaries of America’s great public infrastructure system, we should pay tribute to the dedicated efforts of the local public works professionals who design, build, operate and maintain our public works infrastructure.

An irresistible force meets an immovable object.

The irresistible force is the sense of discontent with how things have been going during this young century. Americans are displeased with a sluggish economy that fell into a deep recession and with foreign policies that seem to have produced disappointing results.

The immovable object is the strong partisan polarization of American voters, who have been casting almost equal percentages of their votes for each political party in presidential and congressional elections for two decades now, except for a surge against Republicans in 2006 and 2008.

The irresistible force of discontent has been apparent in this year’s primaries.

Donald Trump, with 41 percent of the popular vote, has seized the Republican nomination. Bernie Sanders, with 42 percent of the popular vote, has moved the agenda of the Democratic Party significantly leftward.

Trump’s victory raises the possibility that the immovable object will be moved – i.e., party alignments will shift. That is certainly suggested by the March and April polling that showed him behind Hillary Clinton by as much as 50 percent to 39 percent.

SHABBONA – The Indian Creek softball team piled on the runs early and never looked back, beating Hinckley-Big Rock, 25-0, in five innings Monday afternoon in the first round of the Class 1A Somonauk Regional.

The No. 7-seeded Timberwolves (815) put up nine runs in the first inning and 16 in the second against inexperienced No. 9 seed Hinckley-Big Rock (0-17).

In the second inning alone, the Timberwolves batted through their order more than twice – with four of their batters coming to the plate three times.

Facing a conference opponent in the first round of the regionals, Indian Creek knew what to expect from the Royals.

“We played well and we played as expected, I think,” Indian Creek coach Alyx Bickel said. “We’ve played them a few times earlier in the season and we had similar success against them. We were patient at the plate and making good swings and hitting the ball well.

That’s good to see, and, hopefully, we can continue that against Somonauk on Tuesday.”

Hinckley-Big Rock coaches and players declined to comment after the game.

Against the Royals on Monday, Indian Creek had 17 hits and nearly half of their runs came off walks. The Timberwolves drew 17 walks.

The Timberwolves saw each of their batters record at least one RBI and were led by left fielder Topanga McCoy, who went 3 for 5 with three RBIs. Elizabeth Cursio, Jenna Cowan and Haley Petragallo each had two RBIs. Indian Creek starting

pitcher Samantha Fleming kept the Royals off the board by allowing only three hits while striking out five. The first hit she allowed didn’t come until the fourth inning, when Hinckley-Big Rock managed two hits in a row.

In the first game of the postseason for the Timberwolves, Bickel was most impressed by her starting pitcher’s performance.

“Sam Fleming pitched really well for us today,” Bickel said. “She gave up just a few hits for us, which was really great.”

BURLINGTON – The DeKalb softball team dropped a heartbreaker in 10 innings, falling, 2-1, Monday at Burlington Central.

The Barbs went into the bottom of the seventh leading, 1-0.

Back-to-back errors put runners on first and second base for the Rockets with no outs. After a fielder’s choice moved the runners to second and third, DeKalb pitcher Morgan Newport struck out Rockets designated hitter Lindsay Jamrozek to get the second

out of the inning.

The next batter, left fielder Sarah Kinney, laid down a squeeze bunt, and Newport’s throw to first brought Barbs second baseman Mallory Warner, who was covering on the play, off the bag for the Barbs’ third error of the inning to tie the score at 1.

“We’ve got to finish the game,” DeKalb coach Jeff Davis said. “We make one of the three plays that we didn’t make (in the seventh inning) and we win the game. Just goes to show you, you can’t count your chickens before they hatch.”

After two innings of back-and-

forth softball, DeKalb (19-7 overall, 9-1 Northern Illinois 12 Conference) threatened in the top of the 10th, with Newport hitting a single and stealing second with one out. A pair of ground outs to second base ended the threat for the Rockets.

In the bottom half of the 10th, Rockets pitcher Emily Kisch led off with a single and was moved to second with a sacrifice bunt. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Rockets first basemen Danielle Yurgil hit a chopper through the hole in the left side of the defense to win it for Central.

Newport pitched well in 91/3 innings.

She amassed 11 strikeouts, walked three and scattered five hits. Davis said he wasn’t too worried about Newport’s workload.

Kishwaukee baseball player Matt Albert was named the Arrowhead Conference MVP as the Kougars had six players honored by the conference.

Along with Albert, who had a .543 batting average in conference and had eight home runs and 24 RBIs, the Kougars also had DeKalb grad Jared Johnson, Sycamore grad Cooper Vinz, Renny Tolentino, Chris Rodriguez and David Salgueiro on the all-conference team.

During conference play, Johnson hit .361 with two home runs, seven RBIs and seven steals, and Vinz hit .472 and had a conference-best 28 RBIs. The Kougars went 13-3 to win the Arrowhead Conference.

Lincecum tossed 41 pitches May 6 for about three dozen scouts representing nearly every major league club in Scottsdale, Arizona, the spring training home of the San Francisco Giants. That’s the only team the 31-year-old right-hander has pitched for.

Torre: Discipline ‘obviously’ coming for Sunday’s brawl

PHOENIX – MLB chief baseball officer Joe Torre said discipline obviously is coming for those involved in Sunday’s melee between the Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Rangers, “hopefully” as soon as today.

We’re long past Cutler debate; jury still out on Sox As far as I know, there isn’t a standard clause in the contracts of Bears coaches that requires them to gush about quarterback Jay Cutler.

Something just happens to these guys when they hit Halas Hall.

One moment, they’re soberly going about their business; the next, they’re describing Cutler as John Elway and George Washington rolled into one hard-throwing, teammate-inspiring leader. We heard it Jay Cutler from Mike Martz. We heard it from Marc Trestman.

The Bears have a new quarterbacks coach and a new receivers coach. Now we’re hearing it from them, too.

“Not to slight anyone else in this league, but in terms of athletic ability, I rate him near the top, if not the top,” quarterbacks coach Dave Ragone said.

“He’s an unreal athlete to me, the way he’s able to move in the pocket, extend plays, create on his own, still be a passer when he does it. It’s one of the most special talents.”

VIEWS Rick Morrissey Said receivers coach Curtis Johnson, “He reminds me of (Saints quarterback) Drew (Brees) with his knowledge of the offense and what he does and how he handles himself with the players.”

There are few people on the fence in the still-raging Cutler debate. Lots of people think he’s mediocre or worse, and lots of people thinks he’s terribly underappreciated. But how many people recognize the Cutler described in the quotes from Ragone and Johnson?

Rather than start another pro-Cutler vs. anti-Cutler war, let’s agree on this: It’s not a good thing that we still are arguing about him as he heads into his eighth season with the Bears and 11th in the league.

To put it another way, nobody was arguing about Brees’ legacy in New Orleans as he headed into his 11th NFL season. He already had won an

Offensive Player of the Year award and a Super Bowl MVP award.

Even though the White Sox have one of the best records in the American League at 24-14, you won’t see them or their fans strutting. That’s probably because their struggles of last season aren’t very far away and because few people are sure of their staying power just yet.

The Sox have hit a speed bump, losing four of their past five games.

The bullpen has struggled, and there is some uneasiness.

Who are these guys? What can we say definitively about them? The starting rotation is mostly good, Chris Sale is a monster and the heavily tatted Brett Lawrie plays the crazy role well.

What else?

Let’s find out.

The next 17 games will go a long way toward deciding whether the forward motion continues for the rest of the season. The Sox return to the Cell tonight for a three-game series against

the Astros, then a three-game series against the Royals. The Astros, a playoff team last season, are in last place in the AL West with a 15-24 record.

The reigning World Series champion Royals are 18-19.

Better get those teams while they’re down.

The Sox then play four games at home against the Indians, visit the Royals for a four-game series, then play a three-game road series against the Mets, who lost in the World Series last season.

The Sox, along with the Tigers, have played the most road games in the majors so far (23). Of their next 29 games, 19 will be at home. They have every right to believe that when they come out of that team-friendly stretch, they’ll be where they are now – with one of the best records in baseball.

Will they be? Now that’s a good question.

Cubs fans spent Monday twisting themselves into pretzels of indignation over the following comment made by Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole on Sunday: “I don’t really think they’re the best team in baseball,” Cole said after his team’s first victory in six tries against the Cubs this season.

Where does this guy get off saying such a thing about an organization that hasn’t proven itself to be the best team in baseball since 1908, otherwise known as David Ross’ rookie year?

Needless to say, the Cubs have played six weeks of the best baseball on the planet. They’re 27-9. They’re 13-3 on the road, with a nine-game swing through Milwaukee, San Francisco and St. Louis beginning tonight. They’ve been better than most teams – and for darn sure Cole’s Pirates – at pretty much everything.

But I’m cool with Cole holding out on calling the Cubs the best, no matter how disingenuous he sounds in doing so.

Maybe he subscribes to the vapid, yet fairly common, line of thinking that the defending champs, in this case the sub-.500 Royals, are the “best” until a different team wins it all. Or maybe he thinks the Pirates are the best. … No, that’s not possible.

Larson races clean at the CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It might be hard to believe that the ending of a low-level race three years ago had such a profound effect on Kyle Larson that it might have cost him his first Sprint Cup victory.

Larson was the next big thing when he arIN THE rived at Daytona InternationPITS al Speedway Jenna in 2013 for his Fryer first full season at NASCAR’s national level. He entered a silly companion race dubbed the “Battle of the Beach” with every expectation to have some fun in the event. When he found himself trailing C.E. Falk III on the final lap, he first tried to move him out of his way before ultimately spinning him to steal the win.

He was booed and rebuked on Twitter by many of NASCAR’s biggest names. By the end of the week, Larson said, he realized the trophy was not worth the perception of being a dirty driver.

“I got a lot of criticism for that and people lost a lot of respect for me for that,” Larson told The Associated Press in an interview a week after

Kenseth has 37 career Sprint Cup victories, a championship and drives for the best team in NASCAR. Larson has no wins, never has qualified for NASCAR’s championship and drives for a team that only occasionally finds its drivers out front.

So there he was, on more than one occasion in the closing laps, with Kenseth in his reach. No matter how hard he tried to make a pass for the lead stick, Larson came up empty again and again. He had one option left: a bump-and-run, a solid shot to Kenseth’s bumper to move him out of his way.

Larson didn’t make the move.

A day later, he had no regrets.

“I thought I did everything I could to get by him as cleanly as possible,” Larson told AP on Monday. “I would have had to get into him (to get by), and I didn’t want to do that. I hope he respects me for the way I raced him and if that situation comes up again, he’ll race me the same way I raced him.”

The permanent teeth will emerge into a mouth with bacteria that have been influenced by the care the mouth has received over the past several years – for better or for worse.

So I’m glad you’re taking your children’s teeth seriously.

How can I better care for her teeth? And what can I do for my infant son so he doesn’t end up with cavities, too?

Dear Reader: Our mouths are home to many bacteria. They live there pretty much all of our lives, taking advantage of one convenient fact: When we put food in our mouth, that’s food for bacteria, too.

And while we have to work to put food in our mouths, they just sit there. Doesn’t seem fair.

Eating or drinking too many sugary foods or not properly brushing or flossing our teeth allows these bacteria to grow too much and make acid that slowly breaks down a tooth’s hard enamel. When that happens, a small pit forms in the tooth – what we call a cavity. Cavities in young children can cause pain, swelling and abnormalities in how the bottom and top teeth come together.

There are simple steps parents can take to help reduce the risk of cavities for their children. Follow these guidelines for infants and toddlers up to the age of 3 years: • Wipe off an infant’s gums and mouth with a damp cloth after feedings.

• Brush a child’s teeth as soon as they appear, twice daily: morning and evening (after the last feeding).

• Floss between the teeth once every day as soon as teeth touch one another.

• Do not put babies to bed with a bottle or cup that contains milk or juice. Water is OK. • Use fluoride, but cautiously. All children need to have some fluoride, but talk to your doctor about how much and which form to use. Children who drink well water or filtered or bottled water might need fluoride supplements. The bidding was clearly debatable. North’s three-club rebid was a double negative, showing 0-3 points. Then his call of three spades promised nothing. So, when South gambled with his jump to six notrump (hoping to outscore pairs in six spades), North decided that since he could have had zero points, his invaluable spade queen justified raising to seven.

South had only 10 top tricks: five spades, one heart, two diamonds and two clubs. To make seven, South assumed that East held the heart king, but if he had king-fourth or kingfifth, it would be necessary to take the finesse three times. That would require three dummy entries from those spades.

At trick two, declarer led his spade jack and, when West followed suit, overtook with dummy’s queen.

East’s discard was a pleasing sight for South. Next, a heart finesse worked.

Back to dummy with a spade to the eight, declarer took a second heart finesse. Then, after a spade to the 10, a third heart finesse saw seven no-trump home for a cold top -- and a very unhappy East-West.

If East had followed with a low spade on the first round of the suit, South would have played a spade to the 10 next, hoping either that the nine appeared or that East had at most three hearts.
