Indian Creek High School graduates 60 in Class of 2016

SHABBONA – When Kurtis Rood of Shabbona was in eighth grade, his grandfather, Larry Peppers of Hinckley, taught him how to play golf.

In high school, Rood was a member of the golf team. This fall, Rood will attend the University of Kansas on a full-ride scholarship, the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship through the Western Golf Association.

“My grandfather taught me everything about the game – the rules, how to swing the club – and I was his caddie,” Rood said. “I never thought those summers learning how to golf would take me so far.”

Rood was one of the 60 seniors who graduated Sunday from Indian Creek High School. Rood was one of his class’s four salutatorians. He is also a triplet, and he graduated with his sisters Elissa and Holly.

The graduating class had four salutatorians with a 4.0 GPA: Alexandra Cluff of Waterman, Kurtis Rood of Shabbona, Madison Russell of Waterman and Alexis Van Wyhe of Waterman. The class’s valedictorian, Alyssa Kaser of Earlville, had a 4.06 GPA. Kaser said after four years of sleepless nights and hard work, the day of graduation was bittersweet.

“I’m excited to graduate, but I’m sad that I won’t be able to see everybody in the hallway every day anymore,” Kaser said. “I’m honored to be my class’s valedictorian. My dad was also his high school’s valedictorian, and I couldn’t have

succeeded without my family’s constant love and encouragement. I hope to remain friends and keep in touch with everyone after graduation.”

During the school’s graduation ceremony, the graduating class’s valedictorian, salutatorians and class president each gave speeches. In her speech, Russell thanked the community, faculty and staff, families of students and her classmates for their support.

“We’re a pretty close class, but we’re really diverse,” Russell said. “We get along and have fun together. I want to especially thank my parents and family for supporting me. All of our hard work these last four years has paid off.”

Sarah Montgomery, the school’s principal, officiated the ceremony and announced the names of the graduates as they were presented their diplomas.

“I’m extremely proud of this group of students,” Montgomery said. “They’re hardworking, and they support each other.”

The senior class’s three advisers – Julianne Hogan, Bob Blonski and Jamie Miquelon – helped the students throughout the past four years. On graduation day, the advisers helped the students with their caps and gowns and attended the ceremony.

“I’m positive the students will do whatever they set their minds to,” Hogan said. “Some of the students are going to trade schools, community colleges and universities out of state. It’s an exciting new adventure. I’m sure they will conquer any obstacles that block their dreams. They can close this chapter on their lives and start a new one.”

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – When deciding where to go to seek her bachelor’s degree, Sycamore native Jaclyn Cox wasn’t too sure if she wanted to stay close to home and attend Northern Illinois University.

But after graduating Saturday with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, she was positive she made the right decision.

“NIU wasn’t my initial choice, but I had a great experience when I got here. I lived off-campus in an apartment and got really involved on campus,” said Cox, a 2011 Sycamore High School graduate. “My family was there if I needed them, but I still did my own thing. I didn’t miss out on the college experience at all by going to NIU.” Hundreds of graduates and their families packed the Convocation Center on Saturday to honor their achievements during the May commencement ceremonies. Dr. Douglas Baker, NIU president, told the graduating class that he is “continually in awe” of them.

“Our graduates are smart, hard-working and talented, and our students have transformed themselves,” Baker said in his remarks to the graduates. “We have an amazing group of students who have taken life-altering journeys during their time on campus. I urge you to give generously of the gifts you have.”

Cameron Maloney of Chicago wanted to graduate for his father, who died when Maloney was 9 years old. He said he promised himself he’d finish his education to make his father proud.

“It feels great, and it’s a journey completed,” Maloney said. “I set a goal to graduate, and I did it. My dad would be very proud of me.”

For Emily Beebe of DeKalb, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, getting practical experience at the NIU Television Center was one of the best parts of her time at NIU. “I was a reporter, producer and anchor, and it showed me how to be professional,” she said. “It gave me a lot of real-life experience. I got a great education, and it was super fun.”

Andy Carrigan of Carpentersville said graduation day was “surreal” for him. He, too, felt he got a great education at NIU and is ready to begin a career in “anything writing-related.”

“It feels like just yesterday I was starting, and now I’m ending. It went by in the blink of an eye,” he said. “I learned so many different things … things I never thought I’d be interested in, but I found that I am interested in

Professor Betty LaFrance of the Department of Communication was very proud of “every single graduate.” She said many of them are often the first in their families to get a college degree.

“This means the culmination of a lot of hard work. It’s now official,” she said. “The majority of these students have sacrificed a lot to earn this de-

gree.”

Dr. Kathleen Renk, chair-elect of the Department of English, said several of her students have overcome many obstacles to obtain a college education.

“A lot of students are challenged – they work, have families, and some are adult students, and they have multiple roles,” she said. “They have to be proud of what they’ve done. They’re all

so happy to be here because of that.”

Ryan Mack of the Quad Cities was extremely happy to be graduating. He already has a job lined up as a news producer at a TV station in the Quad Cities.

“It’s taken me a few years to get here, but it’s the most exciting thing I’ve ever done,” he said. “I got a great education at NIU’s Television Center, and it helped me find my career path.

I’m so ready to start my job, and I owe almost all of it to my experience at NIU.” Graduates aren’t the only ones who were beaming with pride Saturday.

Coleen Cummings’ only child, Keianna, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology, and as a parent, she couldn’t have been more proud. Cummings said Keianna, who graduated from Sycamore High School in 2012, went out of state for her freshman year of college, but wanted to be close to home, so she enrolled at NIU. “This is such a huge accomplishment. She got a great education and used all the resources that she could while at NIU,” Cummings said of her daughter. “I’m very pleased with NIU, too. It was a great experience for her, and I’m glad she chose to stay at home.”

“We, seriously, had such a great class,” Tijerina said.

The school’s gymnasium bleachers were filled to the top with hundreds of family members and friends who turned out to witness the 138 graduating Cogs close one chapter, and look forward to the next.

School officials point to a class of young men and women who have amassed a number of academic successes and demonstrated commitment to community service. The printed program noted more than 40 students inducted into the National Honor Society or National Technical Honor Society.

high hopes all of them will make the school district proud.

“This has been an outstanding group,” Burgess said. “I can’t say enough about what great leadership they’ve given the high school, and really set a tone moving forward.”

This was one of the last classes under Burgess’ leadership. He is set to retire at the end of next school year.

Sarah Howes has been as suc-

cessful representing the Cogs on the green – as an MVP golfer and team captain – as she had been with her academics. She hugged her mom and dad tightly in the school hallway Sunday after she turned her tassel and officially was declared a high school grad.

“I’m just really excited to move on to the next step, and I’m so thankful to have all my friends here and my family supporting me,” said Howes, who plans to major in biology and play golf at Augustana College in Rockford.

The class president said he is going to miss so much about Genoa-Kingston High School. But as he looks forward to starting at Kishwaukee College in the fall, the 17-year-old encourages his classmates to go after their goals and follow their dreams.

“After we walk out of the doors and receive our diplomas ... the stuff we did in high school are (now) just memories,” Tijerina said. “We have so much more going for us in the future.”

AMY BETH PAPROCKI Amy Beth Paprocki, 56, of Naperville, Illinois, formerly of DeKalb, died Friday, May 13, 2016, at her home.

Born April 16, 1960, in DeKalb, the daughter of Richard D. and Beverly N.

(Kizis) Cress.

Amy graduated DeKalb High School Class of 1978 and from Northern Illinois University with a bachelor’s degree in 1984. She was a former member of First Lutheran Church in DeKalb.

She is survived by her five children, Andy, Matt, Mike, Alex, Haley; her parents, Richard and Beverly Cress; sister, Susan Cress of Estero, Florida; brothers, Bill Cress of San Diego, California, Mike (Tina) Cress of Naperville; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, at First Lutheran Church, 324 N. 3rd Street in DeKalb, with the Rev. Dr. Janet Hunt officiating.

Burial will follow at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 20, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb.

Goodwill, NIU host donation drive for residence hall items Students can drop off unwanted belongings in blue bins on campus

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois University students have emptied out of the dorms for the semester, and some of them left behind wares a local nonprofit will use to help provide local jobs and award scholarships.

The Goodwill Give and Go donation drive is actually a national event that takes place on college campuses.

In recent years, Goodwill of Northern Illinois teamed up with NIU to bring the event here.

“This began as a trial four years ago, and has evolved into a partnership at the end of the fall and spring semesters. Students can drop off any gently used items they no longer want or need instead of leaving the items behind or filling up dumpsters,” said Tim Trottier, NIU assistant director of residential facilities.

From May 2 to 16, as NIU students wrapped up their studies for the semester and exited the dorms for the school year, they were able to drop any unwanted items in a donation bin Goodwill set up.

The blue receptacles were in the lobby of each campus residence hall. They are expected to be picked up Tuesday.

Metal wastebaskets, shower caddies, desk organizers, pillows and other goods were among the items students decided to give away instead of dropping them in a Dumpster.

“We wanted to pair up with [NIU] and accept all of these items. Instead of putting them in the landfill, they can donate them to Goodwill, and they can be sold in our stores to help fund our programs,” said Shannon Halverson, spokeswoman

Halverson said the store also employs a number of NIU students. Also, customers have an option to round up their purchase cost, and the money goes to Kishwaukee College for scholarships.

“Even though that little bit up of a round-up seems tiny, so many people in the community have done it ... it really adds up to a lot,” Halverson said.

She explained that the proceeds from sales of items like what students end up donating through Give and Go help fund Goodwill’s job placement and training, free tax preparation and other programs.

Hi, I’m Runty. I lived in my previous home for most of my 5 years before coming to TAILS. It has taken me some time to adjust but now I’m rip rarin’ ready to find myself a wonderful new home! I’ve been having fun with other dogs here in playgroups. In my previous home I lived nicely with kids and a cat! I got along with the kids but didn’t feel so comfortable when lots of other kids and visitors came over. I’m more of a quiet, peaceful kinda girl, and not a noisy barker, either. I didn’t like sharing my food in that home, so I need someone who understands me and can help me with that. I am a little shy around new people, but once I get to know you I’d make a great companion to cuddle up with and watch “Dancing with the Stars”. I love attention and going on long walks. I ride perfectly in the car, too, and am house-trained. And one of the volunteers plays ball which me which is so much fun! I know I have some flaws, but nobody is perfect, right?

I’m just a gal looking for a loving home with someone who understands me and where there isn’t a lot of commotion. Because I’m no longer a cute little puppy or young adult, I’m so afraid it will take a long time to find a home. Oh! I almost forgot, some volunteers who think the world of me have sponsored a portion of my adoption fee!!

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner’s vision of a grand two-year budget compromise with Illinois lawmakers is diminishing as the clock ticks down on this year’s legislative session.

Rauner has asked for pro-business and union-weakening proposals and other legislative changes as part of a budget compromise. He remains optimistic he can get a deal done before the spring session ends May 31, but Democrats who control the Legislature have been largely dismissive of his ideas.

Any post-session spending plan will require three-fifths support from each chamber, rather than a simple majority, making it harder to end the budget standoff now in its 11th month.

“My sense is, big things, important things, kind of get done at the very last minute, kind of around 2 a.m. That may be what happens now, I don’t know,” Rauner said last week.

Two people found dead inside SUV on Chicago expressway

CHICAGO – Authorities said two people were found fatally shot inside an SUV on a Chicago area highway.

Illinois State Police released a statement Sunday saying the shooting occurred around 4 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 90 on the northwest side.

Police said a silver Chevrolet Tahoe stopped in a lane, and a male driver and a female passenger were found inside.

They were found unresponsive, each with gunshot wounds to the head.

Agency launches national park study for New Philadelphia

PITTSFIELD – The first steps have been taken in a special study to determine whether the New Philadelphia site in western Illinois should become a national park.

More than 100 people attended a public meeting Wednesday night in Pittsfield where a National Park Service team explained the study process and heard from residents. The meeting was “very, very pro-

ductive,” study project manager Tom Gibney said.

The study will look at New Philadelphia’s suitability and feasibility as a national park site, the Herald-Whig reported.

The racially diverse 19th century town of New Philadelphia, founded by former slave Free Frank McWorter, thrived with residents until a railroad bypassed it in 1869 and it dissolved in 1885. It is about 280 miles southwest of Chicago.

“The story of my family and the legacy of New Philadelphia is the story of freedom, and as such it anchors the best hope we have for this country,” said Gerald McWorter, a great-greatgreat-grandson of the founder.

The park service will make a recommendation to the secretary of the Interior, but Congress makes final determinations on new national parks.

Normal may revive Route 66 landmark as tourist draw

NORMAL – A historical former gas station and Route 66 landmark in Normal could become a city-owned tourist attraction.

The Pantagraph reported that the City Council is scheduled to vote Monday on the purchase of the onetime Sprague’s service station.

City Manager Mark Peterson said the town has been negotiating the purchase for the past year.

The council will consider spending $229,000 to buy the property and $200,000 for building improvements.

The current owner bought the property in 2006 in hopes of converting it into a bed and breakfast along with a gift shop and restaurant.

The 85-year-old building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a town landmark.

SAO PAULO – To say that Michel Temer faces huge challenges would be an understatement.

Brazil’s 75-year-old acting president must fight the Zika virus, which can cause birth defects and has ravaged thousands of families in poor northeastern states. He must rescue Latin America’s largest economy from its worst recession since the 1930s, most likely by making painful – and protest-invoking – cuts to the pension system and social welfare spending.

He must win back the trust of a populace that has come to believe virtually all politicians, including him, are lining their pockets with taxpayer money.

And he must begin these gargantuan tasks with the Summer Olympics just months away and while his predecessor and former-ally-turned enemy, Dilma Rousseff, is living in the presidential residence and rallying supporters around assertions she was the victim of a coup led by Temer.

“This is going to be a real mess. The combination of all these factors at once is unbelievable,” said Alexandre Barros, a Brasilia-based consultant. “Everybody is unhappy with the situation but nobody knows what to do.”

For the sake of the nation’s 200 million people, and for all the South American nations whose fortunes are tied to Brazil’s powerhouse economy, one hopes that Temer does know what to do.

The career politician, who is married to a 32-year-old former beauty pageant contestant, took office on Thursday just hours after the Senate voted to impeach Rousseff for allegedly using illegal accounting tricks to hide deficits in the federal budget. Rousseff insists she has done nothing wrong, and vows to fight as the Senate holds a trial, a process that can take up to six months.

If the Senate votes to remove Rousseff, as is likely, Temer would complete her term that goes through 2018.

Temer is getting early kudos for one Cabinet choice: Finance Minister Henrique Meirelles is widely respected for serving as Central Bank chief during the boom years from 2003 to 2010.

Meirelles quickly signaled that he’ll push to revamp labor laws to increase productivity and reform a pension system known for generous payouts and early retirement; many public workers can retire between their early and mid-50s.

Actually pulling that off will be very difficult. Many lawmakers in Congress rallied around the idea of ousting Rousseff, but building consensus around unpopular reforms could prove elusive. Still, the ongoing

Analysts also believe that Temer, who has said he won’t run for president in 2018, will be thinking about his legacy. This could be Temer’s last stint in any office: He was recently found guilty of violating campaign finance laws, a decision that makes him ineligible to run for office for eight years, pending likely appeals.

“If Temer gets the ball rolling on major reforms, this would take him to the level of statesman,” said Marcos Troyjo, a professor at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.

Aside from Meirelles, however, Temer is already coming under sharp criticism for the rest of his Cabinet, which is widely criticized as an example of vast inequality in a nation that is predominantly non-white.

Temer’s entire Cabinet is made up of white men, including some with very thin resumes and others who are under a cloud of corruption allegations.

Rousseff, the nation’s first female president, wasted no time in making contrasts with her much more diverse outgoing Cabinet.

“I think gender questions are a question of democracy in a country where the majority, more than 50 percent, are women,” she said Friday, the first day of Temer’s government.

Noting that her nation was the last in the Americas to outlaw slavery, in 1888, she added: “Here in Brazil, discrimination has a face: It’s black, woman and child.”

One of Temer’s biggest challenges, if not a direct threat to his presidency, is the so-called Car Wash probe. Led by judge Sergio Moro, investigators uncovered a multi-billion dollar kickback scheme centered on the state oil company Petrobras that has astonished even a populous long inured to political graft.

Hiroshima visit has ability to boost Obama’s credibility

President Obama added a couple of firsts to his list of achievements when he became the first sitting president to visit Myanmar in 2012 and to visit Cuba in modern times.

He will add another at the end of this month when he visits Hiroshima in conjunction with the Group of 7 leaders meeting in Japan.

Although the White House is playing down expectations, the visit gives him a significant opportunity to offer some tangible new initiatives to advance his vision of a nuclear-free world – a major goal at the outset of his administration that has since faded against a host of other foreign policy challenges.

Although American ambassadors John Roos and Caroline Kennedy have visited Hiroshima in recent years, and Secretary of State John Kerry did so last month, senior American officials have largely avoided the war memorial for the 200,000 people who lost their lives in the two nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki that ended the war in the Pacific. Given the 70-year alliance between Japan and the United States that has flourished since the end of the war, Obama’s decision to visit the memorial seems well overdue.

Yet it was arrived at only after an intense monthslong debate within the administration. Some officials were concerned such an appearance would be interpreted as an apology for America’s wartime actions and further inflame this year’s presidential election.

During Obama’s first year in office, his critics unfairly accused him of making an “apology tour” when he traveled to the Middle East and Europe in an effort to reset relationships that had deteriorated during the Bush administration.

News reports have said that most Japanese are not looking for an apology, and Obama is not planning to offer any. Instead, according to one senior official, he will “offer a forward-looking vision focused on our shared future.”

Japan and the United States have much to celebrate. The alliance constructed from the ashes of devastation and war has helped keep the peace in Asia. The two countries continue to work together on development and security projects in other parts of the world as well.

Although he has fallen well short of his lofty aim of a world “without nuclear weapons” announced in 2009, Obama can justly claim important achievements. Among these are the 2015 nuclear deal that seeks to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, and the 2010 New Start Treaty mandating cuts in the number of strategic warheads deployed by the United States and Russia to 1,550 warheads each.

One big obstacle to further progress has been Russia’s increasingly aggressive president, Vladimir Putin, who has opposed more arms reduction. Other impediments include a Senate that refuses to ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, and Pakistan, which has blocked negotiations on a treaty to halt production of fissile material.

But there still are opportunities to improve his credibility – small steps such as canceling the new air-launched, nuclear-armed cruise missile and persuading the United Nations Security Council to endorse the nuclear test moratorium that all countries but North Korea observe. Perhaps, too, in his visit to Hiroshima, a strong speech and even a new initiative.

SCENE Lecture series kicks off at museum The public is invited to the Ellwood House Museum on May 27 for the first program of a new lecture series titled “Local Lore.”

The adult series will cover a wide variety of topics relating to DeKalb history. Each month, a different guest speaker will present these fascinating programs. All lectures take place at the Ellwood House Museum Visitor Center, 509 N. First St. in DeKalb.

The first program in the series is titled “Heirlooms for the Garden” and will be presented by garden historian Tari Rowland of Rockford’s Midway Village Museum. Rowland will discuss unique and interesting varieties of heirloom

vegetables and flowers for gardeners, like May Ellwood, who did not want a cookie cutter plan.

This lecture also will include information about 10 varieties of vegetables and 10 varieties of flowers that would make great additions to modern gardens.

Proceeds will be donated to Adventure Works of DeKalb County, a nonprofit, interactive counseling agency that serves youth ages 6 to 18 providing individual, family and group counseling through adventure.

The run/walk will start and end at the KishHealth System Physical Therapy Center, 2111 Midlands Court, Sycamore. The course is flat and follows city streets.

Event day registration and packet pick-up will be available from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. Registration closes at 7:45

First, the fourth-seeded Barbs (12-6-2) will have to get past the fifth-seed Rockets (16-6) at 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday, not to mention the top-seeded Spartans (18-2-1) can’t have any slipups against an Illinois Math and Science Academy team (seeded seventh) that lost, 10-0, to Kaneland earlier this year, a team Sycamore has beaten twice. IMSA and Sycamore play at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

DeKalb coach Patrick Hamilton said the focus for the Barbs is squarely on the Rockets and fulfilling a season-long goal of making a regional final.

“We set a goal early in the season and we know what that goal is,” Hamilton said. “We have to make sure we approach the first half against Burlington Central and do what we have to do. We’re not the type of team to overlook an opponent. We’re making sure we prepared to beat Burlington Central and we’re not looking at any team other than Burlington Central.”

Sycamore beat DeKalb, 3-0, both times the teams played this season.

So instead of looking ahead to a Spartan team that has had a dominant regular season – recording 14 shutouts and not losing since April 23 – the Barbs are focused on the Rockets.

“We saw them last year, lost by a goal,” Hamilton said of the Rockets’ 4-3 win in a 2015 Class 2A DeKalb Regional semifinal. “We respect a lot of the things they bring to the table.

They are a quality team, and we thought maybe they’d have a higher ranking with a lot of good wins this year. They have some pieces that are dangerous. We’re going to go out there and battle and are looking forward to a good match.”

The Rockets lost, 4-3, earlier in the year to Dixon, which may have hurt them in seeding in the subsection.

Dixon ended up with the No. 3 season and will be in the Class 2A

Sterling Regional. No. 2 Kaneland will be there, facing No. 8 Rochelle in a semifinal then facing Dixon or No. 6 Sterling in the championship.

Hanna Hickey leads the Barbs with 14 goals on the year, while Kayla Baum has been leading a young defense, Hamilton said.

“We have some good leaders, but we’re still young in some areas,” Hamilton said. “We knew this year would be a development year, but we’re pleased with that development and where we are going with this group of kids.”

DeKalb will host the sectional tournament, with the Burlington Central regional winner facing the winner of the Hampshire regional.

Freeport lurks in that regional as the No. 2 seed and has handed the Spartans one of their two losses this season. Sycamore has won five straight since then by a combined 27-4. The Barbs tied Freeport, 1-1.

The Sterling regional will face whoever comes out of the Boylan Catholic regional, likely No. 1 seed and host Boylan Catholic. Freeport, Sycamore, Kaneland and Boylan Catholic were all in the same sectional last year, in which all three games were decided by one goal and Kaneland advancing.

With two outs, Melissa Clemente got caught in a rundown between first and second after attempting a steal, staying in the rundown long enough to allow Lexi Howie to steal home. Howie crossed the plate before Clemente was tagged out, at the time pushing the lead to 6-3.

In the top of the seventh, Oregon pushed across two runs and had a runner at first with one out, but the Cogs (17-10) turned a double play to end the game.

Kendyl Strack, Dani Mathey and Cassie Bade each had multiple hits

in the win.

BASEBALL Cogs fall to Boylan: Genoa-Kingston gave up four runs in the top of the first inning to set an early tone in the 11-3 loss. The Cogs trailed, 5-3, heading into the top of the seventh when Boylan put up six in the inning to put the game away.

The Cogs fall to 9-16.

TENNIS DeKalb’s Trejo fourth at conference: The Barb’s Hunter Tiggelaar and Jack Fellbaum took third at No. 1 doubles Saturday at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference tournament.

The Northern Illinois University softball team was ousted by Ohio on Saturday at the Mid-American Conference Tournament, dropping a 3-1 decision that ended NIU’s season with a third-place finish after four days of softball at Firestone Stadium in Akron.

In the losers’ bracket final, the Huskies (35-20) attempted to rally late against the Bobcats (37-22), scoring one run in the sixth when Jordyn Bowen tripled and scored on a clutch two-out single by Bekah Harnish. NIU almost took the lead when Kayti Grable hit a deep fly ball to left that was caught by Ohio outfielder Michaela Dorsey as she tumbled over the fence.

NIU softball head coach Christina Sutcliffe was disappointed by the defeat, but emphasized that winning the program’s first MAC West title since 2000, and posting another winning season, signified where the Huskies are heading in the future.

“It was a shame to go down not

really playing our best. We didn’t have good enough offense or defense in that game. It’s tough to lose that way,” Sutcliffe said. “But we had a tremendous season, broke a lot of records and the program took a huge step forward this season.”

The Huskies went 2-2 at the MAC Tournament, earning a top-three finish in the conference’s postseason event for the third time in four years under Sutcliffe, who pointed out the careers of seniors Emily Naegele and Caitlyn Warren after both finished their collegiate careers Saturday.

“Naegele and Warren are certainly going to be really tough to replace, but they’ve laid a great foundation for the future of our program with their hard work and dedication,” Sutcliffe said.

NIU softball reached the 35-win plateau for the 2016 season with Thursday’s victory over No. 1 seed Kent State, marking the program’s first season with that many victories since 1999 and only the eighth 35-win season in Huskies softball history.

Floyd, Bears have plan to get him bigger BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush LAKE FOREST – Dating back a few weeks to the draft and now that the Bears have wrapped up rookie minicamp Sunday, the hot button or buzz around the ballclub continues to be all about Leonard Floyd.

There is no debate about the young man’s unique athletic traits and there is one school of thought that he looks like an excellent choice because of them.

There is another school of thought that states Floyd just wasn’t productive enough at Georgia, in light of his special abilities, to justify being selected so high.

Some would like to debate this, but the fact is his numbers just don’t say ninth-overall pick.

Although it is all fun, offseason chatter, I find myself firmly planted on the fence and my impression after spending the weekend at Halas Hall is that there might be members of the Bears brain trust sitting next to me.

Having never stood by a scale with Floyd on it, I can only tell you that numerous reliable sources assure me the young man played between 225 and 230 pounds while he was at Georgia, and it has been taken as a given Floyd will have to get “bigger” to be productive let alone excel for the Bears.

He’s going to weigh somewhere between 230 and 235,” Fangio said. “That’s just what he’s going to weigh. We knew that before we drafted him. So it’s not an issue. We knew that and that’s a fact and that’s what he is.”

That doesn’t mean Fangio doesn’t like Floyd, but is this a solid endorsement?

“He’s very athletic. He’s long. He can run. He’s got good instincts,” Fangio said. “They used him all over the place, so I think he has good football instincts, which we’ll see if that translates here.

“So there were a lot of things to like from his athletic ability, movement, he’s got some pass-rush talent, he can play in coverage, he’s got

talent for that.”

Coach John Fox does think getting bigger matters for Floyd, but he’s not worried about it, saying, “I think all these guys gain weight, I think we all do with age,” Fox said. “So that will just happen and we’re more concerned with getting him ready mentally and technically in our systems more so, than the other stuff will take care of itself.”

On Sunday, we got to visit with the young man for the first time since his whirlwind draft weekend.

He is an extremely pleasant kid, is respectful to the max, calling almost everyone sir, and he seems really anxious to please.

I asked him about the weight issue and he said, “I’ll play at whatever

weight my coaches see me playing at.

I’m with Jenn (Jennifer Gibson, Bears sport science coordinator & sport dietitian) every day, we’ve got a game plan laid out, so we’re working on it.”

Obviously, the Bears’ plan is to do everything they can to get him bigger.

When I asked him if he felt he could succeed without adding weight Floyd said, “Yes, sir, yes, sir. I believe in myself and the coaches believe in me, too.”

Believing in yourself and having the tools to succeed are two different things.

Again, I’m stuck on the fence here, and I’m not going anywhere until I’ve seen him in pads and on the field against NFL competition through October and November.

Put on the tape of him in college and you can see him regularly stifled when bigger, stronger guys got their hands on him. Imagine what could happen at the next level?

However, on that same tape you’ll see him at times already past those bigger, stronger guys before they were out of their stances. Imagine what could happen at the next level?

History does not favor drafting athletes over football players, but the move has produced the occasional special player. Is Floyd that guy?

My best guess is that minimally the Leonard Floyd debate is one we’ll still be having when next year’s draft rolls around.

Kenseth holds off Larson for thrilling win at Dover

The Associated Press DOVER, Del. – Matt Kenseth had eluded the wreckage that turned Dover into a junkyard. He never felt he could escape the pressure that Kyle Larson put on him – the anointed future star racing door-to-door with the former champion.

“He was all over me,” Kenseth said.

“I think if he would have snuck inside, it would have been over.”

Elliott, the second-generation rookie who replaced Jeff Gordon in the No. 24, made an aggressive run and briefly passed Larson for second. Their brief battle took enough steam out of Larson’s push that Kenseth was able to create a needed gap and become the fourth Joe Gibbs Racing driver to win in 2016.

“I think the last 20 laps is about as

good as anybody could drive a racecar,” Gibbs said.

Larson matched his career-best finish for owner Chip Ganassi. Elliott had the top finish of his first season at Hendrick Motorsports.

The Next Generation has to wait for the confetti shower in victory lane.

Larson refused to bump Kenseth out of his path over the final thrilling laps and wanted a clean pass in the No. 42 to earn the win.

“It doesn’t even seem right that he hasn’t won yet,” Kenseth said. “He’s got a bunch of victories in front of him, for sure. He’s a really, really clean, hard racer, and a fast learner.”

The 44-year-old Kenseth is older than the combined ages of Elliott, 20, and the 23-year-old Larson.

SPORTS BRIEFS Toronto-Texas feud simmering since playoffs erupts in brawl

ARLINGTON, Texas – A feud simmering since Jose Bautista’s bat flip in last year’s AL division series boiled over into a brawl in the final game of the season between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Texas Rangers.

Bautista and Texas second baseman Rougned Odor got into a fistfight behind the bag after a hard slide by the Toronto slugger in the eighth inning. Players from both teams rushed the field as Odor landed a punch to Bautista’s face.

Umpires needed about 10 minutes to restore order, and Blue Jays reliever Jesse Chavez hit Prince Fielder with the next pitch when the game resumed. He was ejected after an earlier warning for both teams when Bautista was hit by a pitch from Matt Bush.

Bautista and Odor were ejected Sunday along with Toronto’s Josh Donaldson and Texas bench coach Steve Buechele.

Lowry scores 35, DeRozan has 28 as Raptors beat Heat

TORONTO – Kyle Lowry scored 35 points, DeMar DeRozan had 28 and the Toronto Raptors beat the Miami Heat, 116-89, Sunday in Game 7 to reach the conference finals for the first time in franchise history.

Bismack Biyombo added 17 points and

16 rebounds for the Raptors. They’ll open the Eastern Conference finals on Tuesday night in Cleveland against LeBron James and the Cavaliers. Toronto fans chanted, “We Want Cleveland!” in the final seconds.

Former big league pitcher Sammy Ellis dies at 75

NEW YORK – Former major league pitcher Sammy Ellis, who became an All-Star with the Cincinnati Reds in 1965, has died. He was 75.

The funeral home handling the arrangements said Ellis died Friday in Temple Terrace, Florida. It didn’t provide details on his death.

The New York Yankees held a moment of silence for Ellis before playing the White Sox on Sunday and put his picture on the scoreboard. Ellis was a pitching coach for several teams, including the Yankees.

Ellis went 22-10 with two saves for the Reds in 1965, throwing 15 complete games and 2632/3 innings. He was 63-58 with a 4.15 ERA in seven seasons, also pitching for the Angels before finishing up with the White Sox in 1969. The right-hander went on to coach and work with many clubs, spending time with the White Sox, Cubs, Seattle, Boston, Baltimore and Cincinnati.

Lester takes no-hit bid Day goes wire-to-wire into 7th, but Cubs fall to capture The Players

CHICAGO – Jon Lester thought he threw a lot of good pitches against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

But one, in particular, stuck out.

After taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning, the Cubs left-hander left a fastball over the middle of the plate to Jung Ho Kang, who doubled to give the Pirates the lead in Pittsburgh’s 2-1 victory Sunday.

“I tried to go in and didn’t locate,” Lester said. “That’s a tough one, but you’ve got to look at the other 100-and-whatever pitches I threw today that were pretty good. I feel like I found my curveball a little bit today, and that will definitely help me as we keep going.”

Starling Marte singled with one out in the seventh to end Lester’s no-hit bid, then scored on Kang’s double to put Gerrit Cole and the Pirates ahead to stay.

“We felt we were due for a while against these guys,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said.

Kang added an eighth-inning home run to help the Pirates beat the major league-leading Cubs for the first time in six tries this season.

Cole (4-3) allowed three hits in eight

shutout innings. Mark Melancon gave up a run in a shaky ninth, but held on for his 11th save in 12 chances.

Lester (4-2), who threw a no-hitter with Boston in 2008, had permitted only two walks and retired 16 straight batters before Marte’s opposite-field liner to right on a change-up.

Marte stole second and scored on Kang’s drive to the gap in right-center, chasing Lester after 109 pitches. He struck out nine.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon indicated he would have kept Lester in the game if he continued throwing a no-hitter despite a high pitch count. Lester would have an extra day to recover before his next start because the Cubs are off today.

“It was a little dicey, but if he has it going on, go for it,” Maddon said.

Melancon walked Dexter Fowler and allowed Jason Heyward’s broken-bat single to put runners at the corners with nobody out in the ninth. But the closer retired three of the next four hitters, including Anthony Rizzo’s sacrifice fly.

“We fought to the very last drop again, so there’s nothing to complain about,” Maddon said. “Just a really well-played baseball game, and we got beat.”

Sox lose for 4th time in 5 games

The Associated Press NEW YORK – Still leading the AL Central by a comfortable margin, Adam Eaton and the White Sox headed home, eager for a break.

The White Sox broke down in too many places and lost for the 13th time in their last 15 games at Yankee Stadium, 7-5, Sunday.

An untimely error by second baseman Brett Lawrie, a poor start by Miguel Gonzalez and a shaky bullpen left the Sox 2-4 on its swing through Texas and New York.

Eaton was a bright spot, hitting a home run and also squeezing home a run.

“Not a great road trip for us, but we’ll put it behind us,” the outfielder said.

“It’s been a tough road, playing some good teams and lost some close ballgames.”

“But we know we have a good team here. Going forward, that’s what we’re

focused on, the off day and enjoying families, getting home and getting some rest and then getting going on Tuesday.”

The Sox have dropped four of five overall. The Yankees overcame a hiccup by reliever Dellin Betances to finish 7-3 against the Sox, Kansas City and Boston, a much-needed boost for the lastplace team.

A day after striking out all four batters he faced, Betances (1-2) wasn’t so dominant. He took over in the seventh with a 5-4 lead, but Jose Abreu and Todd Frazier greeted him with singles and Melky Cabrera hit a tying double.

With runners on second and third and no outs, Betances recovered to retire the next three batters.

“When you’re playing a team that’s trying to scratch and claw, too, it’s a good game, back and forth, we just couldn’t hold it,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “We’d get a lead, they kept fighting back. And even for us late, seventh inning, you end up tying it back up, we just couldn’t pin it down.”

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Jason Day wanted to win The Players Championship so badly that he wasn’t going to let anything stop him.

Not the super slick greens that nearly derailed him Saturday.

Not the three muffed chips that turned potential birdie into a unsettling bogey as he made the turn Jason Day Sunday. And certainly not the best field in golf.

With another command performance, Day put his stamp on No. 1 in the world by never letting anyone closer than two shots in the final round, playing bogey-free on the back nine of the TPC Sawgrass for the fourth straight day and closing with a 1-under 71 for a wire-to-wire victory.

It was his seventh title in the last

10 months.

And the 28-year-old Australian wants to win a lot more.

“I want to be to be able to be looked back on and know that ‘he was one of the greats in the game.’

If I have the opportunity to do that, I’m going to try my best,” Day said after his four-shot victory. “And I have the opportunity to do that right now, try and work has hard as I can to really leave my footprint in this game.

“I’m very motivated to win as much as I can right now.”

He stomped his way all over everyone at The Players Championship, although he had a few nervous moments.

Day made bogey on No. 6, had to make a 15-foot par putt on the next hole and really looked out of sorts from just 40 feet right of the green on the par-5 ninth.

He muffed three straight chips and had to make a 6-foot putt just to escape with bogey, dropping his lead to two shots.

Elizabeth Sue Grabow (Jane Doe) (1958-1976)

Elizabeth Sue Grabow was known as “Jane Doe” for thirteen years. Her unidentified body was found on an abandoned farm in Sycamore in 1976. Police determined that she had been there for a number of years by the apple found in her pocket.

This was the first time facial reconstruction with clay was used to help identify the victim introducing us to the new field of Forensic Anthropology. The eerie photo was published in newspapers around the world. A NBC TV episode of “Quincy” was put together to help explain the process used to reconstruct the face.

On June 21, 1989 an official announcement stated that Jane Doe had been identified as Elizabeth Sue Grabow.

Ben Gordon (1908-1971)

Ben Gordon was a DeKalb merchant and civic leader. He operated Gordon’s Hardware in downtown DeKalb. He served as chairman of the DeKalb County Mental Health Board. In 1968 the Ben Gordon Center was established which provides mental health counseling and substance abuse treatment services to DeKalb County. The Center is now part of the Kish Health System

Charlie Gunn (1886-1980)

Charlie Gunn was an early leader in hybrid corn research and a co-founder of DEKALB AgResearch. He came to DeKalb County as a corn breeder and worked with open-pollinated varieties and developed one variety grown in Northern Illinois known as “Gunn’s Western Plowman.”

One of his early varieties, 404A, became the foundation for what became DEKALB AgResearch.

Carl Littlejohn was a DeKalb educator and member of the DeKalb school system professional staff for 50 years.

He began his career as a teacher and eventually served as principal of The Glidden, Ellwood and at he school named after him in 1954.

Dennis Collins attended Northern Illinois University and studied law at Northwestern.

In 1928 he opened a law office in DeKalb and continued his practice until his death in 1974.

He served a record fortytwo years in the Illinois State Legislature with twelve years as a Representative and thirty years as a Senator.

But when the caffeine wears off, your blood vessels expand and your headache returns.

Regular use of painkillers likely also interferes with your body’s natural painkilling system. So ask your doctor whether there’s a chance you’re overusing headache medications.

Talk to your doctor about preventive medications, such as a muscle relaxant.

Another effective strategy is to combine a tricyclic drug with a beta blocker. Beta blockers decrease the intensity of headaches, while tricyclics reduce their frequency.

Also ask about physical therapies that might help: a heating pad applied daily to your neck and shoulders, massage, ultrasound or gentle stretching to relieve muscle tightness that may contribute to your headaches.

I don’t want to sound like an alarmist. And to repeat, the vast majority of headaches are not caused by serious and life-threatening illnesses such as brain tumors or infections. But daily headaches, especially if you’ve not suffered from headaches earlier in life, need to be thoroughly evaluated.

Dear Doctor K: I’ve had a headache every day for at least six months. Painkillers don’t help much. I know headaches are common, and I don’t like calling my doctor unless it’s a serious problem. Should I call him?

Dear Reader: Yes, you should. I imagine you’re thinking that because headaches are common, they rarely indicate a serious underlying problem – like a brain tumor. That’s true. I also imagine you have suffered from headaches for a long time, although you didn’t say that. You may think if you’ve had the problem a long time, it can’t be serious.

Here’s how I look at it. Many people suffer from repeated attacks of headache during their adult life (and even in childhood). Usually, the cause is migraine, tension or sinus headache. While it’s true these are not as “serious” as a brain tumor or brain infection, they sure can make a person’s life miserable.

But common chronic headache conditions, such as migraines, uncommonly cause headaches literally every day. That’s why the fact you’ve been having them every day for at least six months worries me.

I’d be even more worried if you told me these headaches are a new experience and that you didn’t suffer from headaches previously. Chronic headaches that develop for the first time after age 50 are more likely to be something serious. That’s why, if you were my patient, I would do testing for the more serious causes of headache.

The other reason to see your doctor is to get some relief – even if the headaches aren’t caused by a serious condition. One possibility is the pain medicines you’ve been taking may be contributing to your headaches, rather than relieving them.

Caffeine-containing headache drugs most often are to blame. Check the label of the pain pills you’ve been taking to see whether

South won the heart-queen lead with his king, drew trumps ending in the dummy with the aid of the winning finesse, and led the club jack, which conveniently pinned West’s 10. South lost only one heart, one diamond and one club.

Afterward, West said that next time he would lead his club. Then it could go: club to the ace, club two (his lowest card being a suit-preference signal for diamonds) ruffed, diamond to the ace, club ruff.
