Polar exploration and the power of small goals Hannah McKeand, the guest speaker at Thursday’s Kishwaukee Family YMCA’s Community Awards Dinner, gave one of the more interesting speeches I’ve heard in a while.

Perhaps its because I’ve always enjoyed stories about people who explore planet Earth, and that’s an apt description of McKeand, a 41-year-old native of Bristol, England.

She’s sailed around the world (despite being afraid of the sea) and gone on expeditions through the Amazon, into Afghanistan, attempted to reach the North Pole, and trekked into the heart of the Sahara Desert to reach the “Cave of Swimmers.”

McKeand touched on her many exploits as an explorer, but her solo, unsupported ski trip to the South Pole in 2006 commanded much of the focus. Antarctica is a desolate place, and for 39 days, 9 hours and 33 minutes, she traversed it alone – setting a world record.

She talked about what it was like, and the power that setting and achieving a series of small goals can have in our lives.

“I often get asked, ‘Weren’t you lonely, I mean, it must have been awful being alone for all that time.’ And interestingly, no, this trip was one of the most beautiful things that I feel privileged to have experienced,” McKeand told the audience. “I felt very, very alone, but I didn’t feel lonely, if that makes sense. I

Not only that, but Morano is believed to be the last surviving person in the world born in the 1800s, with a birthdate of Nov. 29, 1899.

Morano lives in a neat one-room apartment, which she no longer leaves, and is kept company by a caregiver and two elderly nieces.

“I am doing fine – 116!” she told well-wishers from her bed Friday.

“I finished school and I went to work. I used to sing. I had a beautiful voice,” she added, summing up her life in a frail voice.

Her physician of 23 years, Dr. Carlo Bava, delivered the news earlier that she was officially the world’s oldest person.

“She was very, very happy” and sitting up in a chair, he told The Associated Press in a phone interview. “She was all proud and contented.”

Korean War veteran, 85, finally will walk on NIU commencement stage

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Robert R. “Gus” Trantham was called to serve in the Korean War before he could bound across the stage and accept his college diploma, but today he will return to his alma mater to fulfill a longtime yearning.

The day is more than 63 years in coming, but Gus finally will take the proud, iconic walk as part of Northern Illinois University’s commencement exercises. He was officially part of the graduating Class of 1953 – when the school was named Northern Illinois State Teachers College. Now, however, he will become one of the highlights of the Class of 2016.

“I wanted to do it,” Trantham, 85, said. “I never really had a graduation.”

Trantham completed his coursework to earn a bachelor’s degree in teaching. He told reporters Friday that he planned to be a teacher and athletic coach. But as it turned out, his parents picked up his diploma for him on graduation day May 30, 1953 – he had already shipped out to serve in the Navy in the Korean War. As part of the commencement ceremony, NIU President Doug Baker is scheduled to make special mention of Trantham. Then, the decorated Navy officer’s grandson, Marines Corps Capt. Michael Guare, is to escort Trantham across the stage.

“We’re all proud,” said Valerie Trantham, 55, the youngest of the Trantham’s four children.

Trantham is legally deaf and is accompanied most places by his service dog, a toy poodle named Henri.

Valerie Trantham said that, in all, 25 of her family members traveled to DeKalb from Charleston, South Carolina, for the ceremony. Generations of Tranthams, including grandchildren as young as 18 months old, are expected to be in the family delegation.

“We’ve been saving money for a year to pay for airline tickets,” the daughter said. “Everybody’s here for this big moment.”

NIU officials said Trantham reached out to the alumni association and told them how he wanted to complete this chapter of his life himself.

The school was proud to honor his request, spokeswoman Lisa Miner said.

“It’s a very important request,” Miner said. “To have somebody come back and say, ‘I was not able to be here

on an important day in my life ... ,’ is a tremendous compliment to Northern Illinois University.”

Valerie Trantham explained that Guare received special permission from the Marine Corps to be at his grandfather’s side and to be in full military regalia.

Much of DeKalb and NIU has changed since the days Trantham and his then-sweetheart traveled from the western suburbs of Chicago to attend school here. In addition to the school’s name, Gus noted many of those transformations Friday when he talked to reporters.

He still beams with pride as he talks about his days on campus, including romping on the grassy fields where residence halls and other buildings now stand. And, of course, he throws in tales from his military days.

The grandfather and entrepreneur said the time was now right to return for his diploma himself.

“I always had that feeling,” he said, “of wanting to come back.”

Southeast Elementary kicks off SpartanTV Junior program

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A new club open to Southeast Elementary students will offer them a peek into the life of a broadcast journalist.

The school hosted an open house Friday to showcase its $85,000 broadcast studio, provided to the school through donations and grant money. Fourth- and fifth-grade students can register to join the after-school club, SpartanTV Junior, beginning next school year, adviser and fourth-grade teacher, Jon Walter said.

“The kids will actually be deciding what stories they want to do for the month and then they will work in groups on the writing of that story,” Walter said.

The new club is a spin-off of Sycamore High School’s SpartanTV, which produces a weekly segment for the district. Although the elementary school’s pilot program will only produce a broadcast once a month, Walter hopes it will develop into a wider and more frequent program. If all goes well, the after-school club will be open to fourth-graders from each of the district’s five elementary schools, and broadcast on a weekly basis, he said.

She married David C. Price in 1973 in Johnson City, TN. Diane was a member of the Victory Baptist Church in DeKalb, IL. Diane and her husband moved to Genoa in 1988. She worked at local nursing homes and did in-home care. She liked to work with elderly people. “Diane lived a full life and did the best she could do!”

Survivors include her husband, David C. Price; one son, Michael (Amy) Price; her mother, Vivian Cash; her sister, Sherry Helisek; and her half sister, Amanda Cash.

She was preceded in death by her son, David, Jr. “Chubbs” Price; her father, Blaine Beam; and one brother, Warren Beam.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, May 16th, at 10:00am at the Kingston Cemetery, Kingston, IL, with Reverend Eric Ngum officiating. Burial and a time to visit with the family will follow the service.

SYCAMORE – Sycamore City Council members are set to vote Tuesday on an annexation agreement that would allow for residential development in a 300-acre rural area northwest of the city.

Aldermen unanimously agreed at a May 2 meeting to table the decision while the city’s planning commission amended an easement agreement with the Sycamore Sportsmen’s Club. The club has repeatedly voiced concerns about the the area’s proximity to its firing range.

The new easement agreement would bar property owners on the annexed land from filing complaints of nuisance or trespass against the Sportsmen’s Club, city documents show.

Approval of the proposed annexation

agreement wouldn’t be the final OK for the development. If council members vote favorably Tuesday, the land owners still would be required to submit a petition to annex, but only after presenting a concept plan for council approval.

Council members approved the Northwest Sub Area Plan in February 2011 to allow a rural subdivision north and west of Motel Road.

Six property owners submitted annexation agreements last fall for the council to consider, with a recommendation from the Sycamore Planning Commission. Council members turned down the annexation plan after a number of concerns surrounding the area’s zoning regulations.

The city’s planning commission met with the the council in January to workshop the agreement, and revise it for resubmission.

Sharing personal information online can put a person at risk, but that doesn’t just include financial information. What you post on social media about your health can be just as risky.

“Health information is sensitive and what strangers know about it can affect your job and your life. People will misuse it. There are three sensitive areas of personal information that you must protect: kids, cash and kidneys,” said Parry Aftab, an attorney specializing in Internet privacy and security law and executive director of WiredSafety, a network that assists cyber-abuse victims. Aftab recently launched CyberWellness.com, an online safety training program and resource for medical professionals and the public.

While you can control what you share online, you cannot control what others will do with that information, she said.

“You wouldn’t put a sign in your front lawn that says, ‘I’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer,’ but that’s just what you’re doing when you post online,” Aftab said.

People may judge you and treat you differently. It could affect your credit score or a loan application. If your boss thinks you may be on certain medications, it may affect how he feels you can do your job. You could even be fired.

If you’re looking for support for a medical condition, try being generic with your posting: “Someone I know is struggling with diabetes, please send thoughts and prayers” or “I’m looking for information about colon cancer. Can anyone help?”

“Consider a website like Caring Bridge (caringbridge. org), which allows you to share updates and information securely with your family and friends. Using a trusted online resource may mitigate the risks of oversharing to a group of potential strangers and enable you to communicate news in a thoughtful and controlled fashion,” Gastfriend said.

Another way is to “hide behind a persona,” Aftab said.

You can create a anonymous Facebook account with no photo of yourself if you really need to vent.

“Just be sure not to ‘friend’ anyone you know,” she added.

Before posting health information online, it’s a good idea to share the news personally with those closest to you.

“Doing it the other way could cause tension,” Gastfriend said. “Consider how your announcement will affect others. This is not just about the news you’re sharing, but how you’re sharing it.”

Social service agencies not sure if, when state will pay

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Lawmakers in Springfield passed a $700 million spending plan Thursday for funding human services programs, but leaders at some area nonprofits are not breathing a sigh of relief just yet.

Cynthia Worsley, executive director of Fox Valley Older Adult Services, said the state owes her agency $540,000. She’s not convinced that Gov. Bruce Rauner will sign the legislation, Senate Bill 2038, which would have the outstanding funds disbursed.

“It, at this point, is not clear if the governor will sign the bill at all,” Worsley said. “He has had some times when he’s sounded supportive, but now he’s beginning to talk like he won’t sign the bill.”

The state has gone almost a full calendar year without a budget in place. The fiscal 2016 started July 1, 2015, and since then, social service agencies, including FVOAS, have been forced to operate without state funding. Organizations

Executive director of Fox Valley Older Adult Services that aid seniors have been some of the hardest hit by state budget woes.

Republicans and Democrats pointed blame across the aisle over the past year, each blaming the other for the budget stalemate. But Thursday, bipartisan approval for the bill included a 111-0 House vote, with three representatives voting “present.” Senators approved it 56-0.

Lack of funding in the past 10 months has led to service and staff cuts. In a number of instances, programs folded

altogether. Lutheran Social Services closed down its in-home care operations in February, including shuttering a location on North Third Street in DeKalb.

In October, FVOAS closed its adult day care center that was in DeKalb. “[SB 2038] just really shouldn’t be considered an acceptable substitute for full payment or real, comprehensive budget solutions,” said Worsley, who added she was thankful the bill passed.

Tara Russo said she has her fingers crossed that Rauner signs the legislation.

Much of the money that her Elder Care Services organization receives comes through the states’ Department on Aging. Funds began slowly flowing from the agency to ECS in mid-March, she said. But money from this legislation could mean some other back bills get paid.

“But the way the state pays, you do your billing process and it’s just out there in limbo,” Russo said. “You don’t know when you’re going to get it. ... It’s kind of frustrating.”

SYCAMORE – The 3M Community Support Group will host Swing for FSA, a golf fundraisernext week for Family Service Agency of DeKalb County.

Family Service Agency – a local nonprofit organization that oversees Big Brothers Big Sisters, Children’s Advocacy Center, Center for Counseling and Senior Services – is based in DeKalb.

Swing for FSA will be May 21 at Sycamore Golf Club, 940 E. State St., Sycamore. The first tee time is at 9 a.m. The event is for all golfers, from pros to duffers.

DeKALB – The city’s Landmark Commission will host a speaker from the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency who will discuss historic property tax incentives.

ESMOND – A 34-year-old Lindenwood man faces a drunken-driving charge after a single-vehicle rollover crash Thursday near Esmond.

Nicolas U. Alcantar-Orozco, 34, of the 20500 block of East Gibson Road, Lindenwood, was driving east on Base Line Road east of Esmond Road about 6:10 p.m. in a GMC truck towing a trailer. Alcantar-Orozco’s birthday was Thursday.

The driver veered onto the south shoulder and partially into the ditch before coming back on the road and losing control of the vehicle. The truck and trailer skidded across both lanes before going into the north ditch and hitting a utility pole. The truck rolled once before landing upright. The trailer was detached at some point, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Alcantar-Orozco, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was ejected through the window of the passenger door, police said.

Passenger Salvador Gaytan, 38, of the 100 block of North Brown Street, Genoa, remained in the vehicle.

Alcantar-Orozco was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital for his injuries and later was charged with driving under the influence,

driving without a seat belt and driving with a suspended license, police said.

Gaytan, who told responders he wasn’t injured, was cited with not wearing a seat belt.

DeKALB – The DeKalb-Sycamore Bookcase Project, a local literacy initiative spearheaded by DeKalb Mayor John Rey, marked its fifth year May 7 by giving 50 handmade bookcases to local children in the Two Rivers Head Start program.

The bookcases were stocked with books as part of an effort to encourage reading and promote literacy.

“Today is a milestone for our project,” Rey said. “It’s the fifth distribution of 50 bookcases and starter libraries of books to be presented to these most important children.”

In a keynote address, Laurie Elish-Piper, dean of Northern Illinois University College of Education, told parents and family members gathered at Faranda’s Banquet Center in DeKalb about the importance of reading.

“Your children are at such an important age now. They are like sponges, soaking up everything around them,” she said. “They learn new words daily and are curious about everything they see and hear. With the personalized bookcases and books the children will receive today, you have the tools to help your children become life-long

The DeKalb-Sycamore Bookcase Project was is modeled after “A Bookcase for Every Child,” which was founded in 2005 by columnist Jim Davidson in Conway, Arkansas. In the past five years, it has provided 250 bookcases and thousands of books to local children.

Rasheed Lewis, 4, of DeKalb, was among those who received a bookcase this year. He’d had a secondhand bookcase before, but nothing like the one built by Jim Worrell and other volunteers with DeKalb-Sycamore Bookcase Project.

After posing for a few photos in front of his new bookcase for his mother, Wayneshia Smith, Lewis was eager to page through the box of books it came with.

Family of Chicago cop charged with murder breaks silence The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – The family of a white Chicago police officer who shot a black teenager 16 times has spoken out publicly for the first time since he was charged with murder, defending him as dedicated officer, husband and father who didn’t set out to kill anyone.

The wife, father and other relatives of Jason Van Dyke spoke to the Chicago Tribune with the officer’s approval for a story published Thursday. Van Dyke, following his attorney’s advice, declined to be interviewed.

They described Van Dyke, 38, as a caring father who dotes on his two daughters. A brother-in-law who is black said it’s unfair to assume 17-yearold Laquan McDonald’s race influenced Van Dyke’s decision to use deadly force in the October 2014 encounter.

His wife, Tiffany, said Van Dyke became an officer because he hoped to make a difference. But she said years working in high-crime areas sapped his optimism and left him emotionally closed-off.

Illinois rape crisis center to end all services but hotline

URBANA – An Illinois rape crisis center is suspending nearly all of its services and will lay off five employees after operating for nearly a year without state money.

The News-Gazette reported that the nonprofit Rape Advocacy Counseling and Education Services agency will end counseling, legal advocacy and community education programs June 1.

School districts considering later start times

CHICAGO – A large suburban Chicago school district is the latest of several in Illinois moving toward starting classes later in the morning amid recommendations from doctors that teenage students need more sleep.

Board members from Northwest Suburban High School District 214 in Arlington Heights received positive feedback on the idea Thursday night.

Superintendent David Schuler recommended high schools in the district start at 8:20 a.m. instead of at about 7:30 a.m., the Daily Herald reported.

Tiffany Van Dyke said she has not watched the video, but acknowledged that she would have to as the trial nears. She said, however, that it won’t change her belief that her husband is innocent.

CHICAGO – Prosecutors are disputing former U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds’ claim that he can’t ad-

sympathy for the officer, who he said acted as “judge, jury and executioner.”

Van Dyke’s attorney, Daniel Herbert, has said Van Dyke feared for his life and acted properly in the McDonald case.

While responding to a deadly police shooting in 2005, Van Dyke described in a deposition having “tunnel vision” while rushing to a scene after hearing an officer might have been injured.

He said his mind went into “fight or flight” mode.

Tiffany, 35, a fitness instructor, said she hopes that speaking out will help people see her husband’s human side.

“His favorite thing, he used to say, was he loved to drive through a neighborhood and see someone wave to him and he’d wave back,” she said of his early years in policing.

One of his proudest moments, she said, was helping secure the parade route for President Barack Obama’s January 2013 inauguration.

Van Dyke’s father, Owen Van Dyke, said his only son loved the outdoors and rode his bike from dawn to dusk while growing up in the suburbs.

“What happened is a terrible tragedy, but our son is not a murderer,” he wrote in a statement to the Tribune.

Body pulled from Lake Michigan ID’d as missing student

body pulled from Lake Michigan on Chicago’s South Side was that of a medical student who was reported missing in April.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said the body of Ambrose Monye was found last weekend.

The medical examiner’s office said an autopsy did not determine the cause and manner of his death, and more studies were being conducted.

The 28-year-old Monye was set to graduate from a university in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Monye was last seen April 21 in the area of Jackson Park Hospital, where he was conducting clinical rotations.

A missing-person report was filed by his brother, Joseph Monye, also a medical student.

Joseph Monye said his brother was excited about graduating, and there was no reason to think he was troubled.

States dig in against directive on transgender bathroom use

RALEIGH, N.C. – Politicians in Texas, Arkansas and elsewhere vowed defiance – and other conservative states could follow suit – after the Obama administration told public schools across the U.S. on Friday to let transgender students use the bathrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity.

The federal government’s guidance was met with tearful praise from parents of transgender students.

“It’s heartbreaking that these kids are losing their lives because they can’t be accepted,” Hope Tyler, who has a transgender son at a Raleigh high school, said in reference to suicides among transgender people. “Somebody has to speak for the kids.”

The directive from the U.S. Justice and Education Departments represents an escalation in the fast-moving dispute over what is becoming the civil rights issue of the day.

One by one, conservative political leaders thundered against it and President Barack Obama.

“This is the most outrageous example yet of the Obama administration forcing its liberal agenda on states that roundly reject it,” said Mississippi Republican Gov. Phil Bryant.

The guidance was issued just days after the Justice Department and North Carolina sued each other a state law requiring transgender people to use the public bathroom that corresponds to the sex on their birth certificate. The law applies to schools and many other places.

While supporters say the measure is needed to protect women and children from sexual predators, the Justice Department and others argue the threat is practically nonexistent and

the law discriminatory.

The guidance issued Friday is not legally binding, since the question of whether federal civil rights law protects transgender people has not been definitively answered by the courts and may ultimately be decided by the Supreme Court.

But schools that refuse to comply could be hit with civil rights lawsuits from the government and could face a cutoff of federal aid to education.

Texas’ lieutenant governor said the state is prepared to forfeit billions rather than let the Obama administration dictate restroom policy for its 5.2 million students.

“We will not be blackmailed by the president’s 30 pieces of silver,” Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said.

Rodney Cavness, superintendent of the Port Neches-Groves school district in Texas, told KFDM-TV: “When I get that letter, I’ll throw it away.”

Similarly, GOP Gov. Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas said schools should disregard the directive, which he derided as “social engineering.”

Governors and top leaders in other conservative states railed against the guidance but stopped short of telling schools to ignore it.

“The last time I checked, the United States is not ruled by a king who can bypass Congress and the courts and force school-age boys and girls to share the same bathrooms and locker rooms,” North Carolina’s Republican Senate leader Phil Berger said.

And Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin said: “It is difficult to imagine a more absurd federal overreach into a local issue.”

But Democratic Govs. Peter Shumlin of Vermont and Jay Inslee of Washington praised the Obama directive, saying it was consistent with their own policies.

Dog bitten while saving girl, 7, from rattlesnake TAMPA, Fla. – When a venomous Eastern diamondback rattlesnake appeared in the backyard of a 7-year-old girl, her German shepherd came to her rescue, refusing to back down even when the snake bit him three times.

“It shows you that a rescue dog, for us, paid it forward by protecting my family,” said Adam DeLuca of Tampa.

Now hundreds of donors are coming to the family’s rescue, quickly topping the goal of $15,000 Friday on a GoFundMe account to help pay for the antivenin needed to keep the dog alive. By Friday afternoon, $35,000 had been raised for the dog’s care.

Haus still is recovering in the Intensive Care Unit of Tampa’s Blue Pearl Emergency Veterinary and Specialty Hospital, and is being treated with anti-venom and painkillers, said Dr. John Gicking.

“Without the pain medication, he’s in pain. He’s responsive, he’s alert, and his leg is swollen and uncomfortable,” the doctor said.

Molly DeLuca’s grandmother was watching her play with the 2-year-old shepherd in their backyard when the dog suddenly jumped in front of the girl and reared up several times. It wasn’t clear what happened at first, but they could tell Haus was bleeding, and brought him to the vet.

When his leg was shaved, three bite marks could be seen – telltale signs of the rattlesnake.

The family lives near a state park that is a habitat for rattlesnakes and cottonmouths, and dangerous critters can slip under their fence from the wilderness, her father said.

The snake’s venom damaged the dog’s kidneys. Vets now expect a full recovery, but it won’t be cheap: Each day in the ICU costs between $1,000 to $1,500, and each vial of anti-venom costs $618.

Haus is averaging four or five vials a day as the poison leaves his system.

A family friend started the fundraising effort. The response, said DeLuca, has been “overwhelming.”

Haus is expected to be hospitalized for another couple of days. The family plans to forward any unused donations to a local rescue organization.

As fliers wait in security lines, gov’t asks for patience

WASHINGTON – Facing a growing backlash over extremely long waits at airport security, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson asked fliers “to be patient” as the government takes steps to get them onto planes more quickly.

Travelers across the country have endured lengthy security lines, some snaking up and down escalators, or through food courts, and into terminal lobbies.

At some airports, lines during peak hours have topped 90 minutes. Airlines have reported holding planes at gates to wait for passengers to clear security.

Johnson said Friday that the government is working to ease the lines, although travelers should expect to wait as they travel this summer. Whatever steps TSA takes, Johnson said, it won’t neglect its duty to stop terrorists.

“Our job is to keep the American people safe,” Johnson told reporters at a news conference. “We’re not going to compromise aviation security in the face of this.”

passengers and bags to screen. Johnson said TSA is working with airlines to enforce limits on carry-on bags and their size. Passengers often over-pack carry-ons to avoid paying the $25 checked bag fee most airlines charge. Two U.S. senators this week suggested that air-

lines should drop those fees. But that doesn’t appear to be a solution either.

And even that might not ease checkpoint problems. On Thursday, a video surfaced of giant lines at Chicago’s Midway airport. Southwest Airlines – which is the only U.S. airline that doesn’t charge for checked bags – is the predominant airline at Midway.

In the past three years, the TSA and Congress cut the number of front-line screeners by 4,622 – or about 10 percent – on expectations that an expedited screening program called PreCheck would speed up the lines. However, not enough people enrolled for TSA to realize the anticipated efficiencies.

Congress this week agreed to shift $34 million in TSA funding forward, allowing the agency to pay overtime to its existing staff and hire an extra 768 screeners by June 15 to bring it up to the congressionally mandated ceiling of 42,525.

SHANGHAI – An anti-counterfeiting group said Friday it was suspending Alibaba’s membership after an uproar by some companies that view the Chinese e-commerce giant as the world’s largest marketplace for fakes.

The International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition told members that it had failed to inform the board of directors about conflicts of interest involving the group’s president, Robert Barchiesi.

Earlier Friday, The Associated Press reported that Barchiesi had stock in Alibaba, had close ties to an Alibaba executive and had used family members to help run the coalition.

The coalition, in a letter to members sent after the AP report came out, said conflicts weren’t disclosed to the board “because of a weakness in our corporate governance procedures.” It said the failure was not because of “inaction on Bob’s part,” referring to Barchiesi.

The coalition said that it is hiring an independent firm to review its corporate governance policies.

In its letter, the board said that as a result of members’ concerns, it was suspending a new class of membership un-

industry that supports criminal syndicates.

In recent weeks Gucci America, Michael Kors and Tiffany have quit the Washington D.C.-based coalition, which has more than 250 members.

The AP found several ties between the group’s president and Alibaba: • Barchiesi has owned Alibaba stock since its 2014 listing in New York. The IACC said in a statement that the holdings represent “a small percentage of his investment portfolio.”

• Matthew Bassiur, who took over as vice president of global intellectual property enforcement at Alibaba in January, hired Barchiesi’s son, Robert Barchiesi II, to work at Apple back in 2011. Alibaba said that hire was made on merit. Apple declined to comment.

• Bassiur is a founding board member of the ICE Foundation, which supports U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees. Since 2013, the foundation has been run by Barchiesi’s other son, James Barchiesi. That same year, the foundation’s board voted to award a contract for “fiscal and operational management” to a private company, also run by James Barchiesi. The foundation has received grants of $10,000 from the anti-counterfeiting coalition every year since 2012, tax filings show.

Thumbs-up to community award winners

Thumbs-up: To this year’s Kishwaukee Family YMCA community award winners.

As YMCA Board President Keith Foster said at Thursday’s event, the Y focuses fostering community development in three key areas – youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. This year’s three award recipients, Youth Leader Award winner Jennifer Kuo of Sycamore, Emerging Leader Award winner Frank Turza of Cortland and Outstanding Community Leader Award winner Joel Mauer of DeKalb all have made contributions to the community appropriate for their stages in life. Our community is lucky to have people willing to work and volunteer their time to bring about positive change.

Thumbs-up: To advocating for public health. A group of seventh-graders in the ambassador program at Clinton Rosette Middle School this week gave a presentation to DeKalb Park District officials and others, advocating for the city’s parks to be 100 percent smoke-free. The students researched the health risks of tobacco use through the Reality Illinois program, in collaboration with the DeKalb County Health Department. They not only learned about the health risks of tobacco, but also took an active role in trying to make a change in their community. Those are both positive lessons for young people.

Thumbs-down: To a missed chance at a better deal. In Hinckley, proposals to amend the annexation agreement for the 43-acre Royal Estates subdivision were rejected by the Village Board in November. Now the developer has announced that they plan to develop the land with single-family homes in accordance with the village’s zoning laws. The village had a chance to negotiate a better deal with the developer, both to create a salable product and to secure more money for schools and a site for a library – and in fact, they probably still do. They should consider giving it another shot.

Thumbs-up: To redevelopment in downtown Sycamore. Demolition of aging structures on the former Jane Fargo Hotel property at 355 W. State St. began this week, with a banquet facility and old house being demolished. It’s time for something new at that location. We hope that developer John Pappas’ plans to convert the building into 16 upscale apartments will appeal to buyers.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR State must do more to help local schools

To the Editor: Our children are our future, yet Illinois isn’t providing them with the educational tools they need to succeed.

The bureaucracy local schools endure on a day-to-day basis is unsustainable.

In small towns and villages, such as Kirkland, proper funding is paramount!

We are a small farming community, with very little tax base.

Property tax, and a very small amount of sales tax, is the schools’ main source of income. At least 65 percent of our property tax bill is paid to the schools!

This is a heavy burden to carry. I will add, a good part of the population is on a fixed income, making the tax bill nearly impossible.

It’s time to send more money to our school systems. It’s time we give all Illinois children – from our youngest preschoolers to our high-schoolers getting ready to graduate from Kirkland Hiawatha, access to high quality educational options. By supporting these young scholars, we are laying a stronger foundation for the future of our state.

Unfortunately, more school districts are expected to deficit-spend this year.

That is unless the General Assembly in Springfield works together to fully fund general state aid (GSA), which would end proration and provide our school districts the financial relief they need.

Education is the most important thing we can do as a society. That is why I support Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposal to fully fund pre-K through 12 at the General State Aid foundation level for the first time in seven years, a record investment in our schools and increase funding for early childhood education by $75 million – nearly a 25 percent increase.

Instead of arguing and stonewalling, legislators need to come to the table.

They owe it to our children. I urge you to contact our local legislators tell them our children should not be used in a political game.

Tell them it’s time for them to get to work and act quickly to pass legislation that will help the children of Illinois through these difficult times!

Let’s end any uncertainty in planning for our next school year.

The time is now. We must work together to help our children.

To the Editor: May 3 was the 24-hour online Give Local DeKalb County day, and what a day it was. The staff of the DeKalb County Community Foundation and the DeKalb County NonProfit Partnership had to deal with unforeseen challenges on that

day due to a website malfunction that had nothing to do with anyone or any agency in DeKalb County.

You may have read about it, but suffice it to say, these two agencies turned what could have been a disappointing (can you say disastrous?!) experience for all involved into an amazing one.

Besides the DCCF and the DCNP, the Roberts Family Foundation made a super generous donation to the pot of gold that all the participating charities were vying for.

Oaken Acres Wildlife Center would like to thank everyone who made this day possible. Vinnie, our 25-year-old educational turkey vulture, would like to thank you all for what will be his new heated winter quarters. Our staff thanks you for the new stainless steel cages that will be purchased to make our operation safer and more sanitary. VIEWS John Stossel It’s true – Canadians and Europeans live longer. Progressives cite that to plug single payer. But it’s deceitful. Canadians live longer not because their health care system is better, but because they behave differently. They drive less often and so have fewer accidents. They murder each other less often. They’re less likely to be fat, or as I said to Moore, to “look like you.”

I give him credit for laughing, but then he claimed Canadians live longer “because they never have to worry about paying to go see the doctor.”

Give me a break. It’s nice not to worry, but it won’t save your life.

Some Canadians worry so much about not getting treatment that they travel to the U.S. to see doctors.

In Canada, we do find one pocket of free-market medicine: clinics that offer cutting-edge, life-saving technology without waiting lines.

But you need four legs to get that treatment. If Canadians want a CT scan, the waiting list is a month. But a private veterinary clinic will scan

your dog today.

When government is in charge, you get long lines and someone else deciding if you get treatment.

I don’t claim that America’s partly private system is great. I wrote about bureaucracy and indifferent customer service. Some of you mocked my “whining”: “What a jerk.

They save his life and he complains.”

You have a point. I’m now back at work, and playing beach volleyball, less than four weeks later. I’m grateful that I got good medical care.

But I’m a consumer reporter. I don’t see why the rest of the experience can’t be good, too.

On my TV show this week, my guests describe real reform: free-market medicine.

David Goldhill, author of “Catastrophic Care: Why Everything We Think We Know About Health Care Is Wrong,” points out that, “Unfortunately, the customer of the hospital isn’t the patient, it’s the insurer, it’s Medicare, it’s Medicaid ... (T)hat difference explains a lot of the things that we are dissatisfied with in American health care.”

But Goldhill points to one favorable trend. “Increasingly, people have high deductible (insurance) plans ... (I)t’s the most promising thing in health care.”

Many patients hate high deductibles. But they are useful because they make us realize that care is not “free.”Patients with high deductibles and Health Savings Accounts ask important questions: “Doc, do I really need that test? What does it cost?”

They shop around.

Suddenly, there’s the beginning of an actual market. When patients shop, doctors strive to please patients rather than distant bureaucrats. More doctors give out their email addresses and cellphone numbers, and shorten waiting times.

Their bills are easier to read because the providers want customers to pay them.

Government and insurance companies don’t make health care free.

Such third-party payments just hide the cost, which increases the costs and makes payment more complicated.

Even the fact that medical mistakes are now the third leading cause of death barely makes the bureaucracy sit up and take notice. All politicians care about is that you vote for them before you expire.

Refusal to release tax returns insults voters Besides his usual brazenness, something unsettling lurks behind Donald Trump’s latest statement that – unlike every other nominee in modern times – he will not make public his tax returns before the November election.

“There’s nothing to learn from them,” he told The Associated Press.

Earlier, he claimed he could not release his returns because he was being audited. Then he said on Twitter they would be released “when audit is complete, not after election!”

To voters considering his fitness to be president, Trump’s response is that he will be the judge and jury, a paternalistic and insulting attitude toward the public.

In fact, there would be much to learn from Trump’s tax returns

and, more broadly, his years as a businessman. We’re not picking this criterion out of thin air; Trump is the one who repeatedly trumpets his business experience as his qualification for the presidency. His boasting ought to be tested against hard information about how his companies performed, how they were managed and governed, how shareholders and bondholders were treated, how Trump was compensated, how he managed his tax burden and to what extent he has been a philanthropist.

Unfortunately, Trump’s companies have been largely private in recent years, shielding his accounts from public scrutiny. He did file a 92-page personal financial disclosure statement with the Federal Election Commission that was accompanied

by a newsrelease claiming Trump’s net worth is “in excess of TEN BILLION DOLLARS.” The capital letters are his.

Trump claimed in the news release that his income for 2014 was $362 million, although Fortune magazine, scrutinizing it, reported that that figure is actually his revenue, not his income, which would factor in expenses, and the magazine mused, “You would think that a successful businessman would know the difference between revenue and income.”

Based on Trump’s known revenues, Fortune calculated, there is no way he is worth $10 billion or more.

It wouldn’t be his first big fib.

We also would be curious to see Trump’s deductions for charitable

contributions, given reports in The Post that his philanthropy has been expressed not in monetary donations from Trump but in conservation easements, donations of land and free rounds of golf given by his courses for charity auctions and raffles.

It also would be fascinating to see how Trump managed his tax load, including if he used offshore shelters.

Much of what is known about Trump’s business career suggests he has bullied and bulldozed his way to such success as he has had and, at times, defaulted on interest payments to bondholders and put his companies through bankruptcy.

Did he create real value or just personal notoriety? If he has nothing to hide, he should put the facts out.

President Obama’s proudest accomplishment is increasing the number of Americans with health insurance. A better idea would be to help people escape government care altogether.

As I wrote after my recent surgery, hospital bureaucracy is toxic for patients. Unfortunately, calls for reform usually come from people who want more of the same – more health insurance coverage, more Medicaid, more layers of government oversight.

Our likely next president will push for more government-run health care.

“Single payer would have lower costs,” she claimed when pushing HillaryCare.

Progressives love that phrase, “single payer.” It suggests that medical costs will be covered not by you but by some benign other, without the nastiness of profit.

“Get profit out, get the private health insurance company out,” filmmaker Michael Moore said.

I reminded him that under Canada’s government-run system, patients wait in line for care, often for months. He replied, “That’s the line where they live three years longer than we do! That’s the line I want to be in!”

Stillman Valley scored the game-winning goal as time expired and the No. 2-seeded Cardinals knocked out the No. 4 Timberwolves, 2-1, in the Class 1A Hinckley-Big Rock Regional championship match on a rainy night.

“I have never been a part of a game where something like that’s happened,” Indian Creek coach Luke Anderson said of the last-second goal. “I just said, ‘That’s a hard one to swallow.’ I didn’t have a lot of words because I was still a little bit in shock.”

Along with Schabacker’s buzzer-beater, freshman Maddie Doss fired a goal that lofted over Diehl’s head and landed just inside the left post for the first goal – giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead with 8:24 left in the first half.

“They’re both very talented and skilled,” Stillman Valley coach Erin McMaster said of the goal-scoring freshmen. “There’s a reason why they’re on varsity. They definitely did not play like freshmen tonight.”

STERLING – Matt Richtman is starting to enjoy running at Roscoe Eades Stadium.

The Kaneland sophomore used the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference meet to turn in a career-best time in the 3,200-meter run. Richtman’s time of 9:38.52 broke a school record and earned him a commanding win.

“It was a best time and the race felt great,” said Richtman, who broke the previous record of 9 minutes, 39 seconds. “I knew coming in I was close to the school record, and my coaches and teammates did a good job of letting me know my splits and keeping me on track. Otherwise I might have fallen off the pace.”

Kaneland finished second with 114 points, trailing Geneseo (139). DeKalb (112) took third, and Sycamore (15) was ninth in the 10-team meet.

Rain poured throughout the meet, leaving puddles on the track. The wind picked up for the final few events and turned umbrellas inside out, but it didn’t stop some from turning in record times.

DeKalb senior Tony Tate posted his own conference record in the 200 (21.6), unseating Sycamore’s Dion Hooker’s time of 22.26 set last season. Kaneland’s Brandon Cruz, who finished second to Tate in 22.2, also was faster than the previous conference record.

“And I know I’m always up for it. For me, it wasn’t all about the times, but

more about competing. There’s some fast kids at the top of the conference, and I love running against them.

“My long jump wasn’t my best, nor was my 100. But that’s fine because this was the perfect setup heading into sectionals.”

After the contact, Diehl laid motionless momentarily before slowly getting up and having to leave the game because the referee had stopped the clock to check on her.

Diehl, who had missed time recently because of a concussion, came

back into the game a little more than two minutes later.

“Seeing her go down, your heart stops,” Anderson said. “At first, I thought we were going to be without her for the final 20 minutes. Then she moved around and I asked her and wanted to make sure – obviously, safety comes first. She was cleared by the trainer and seemed to be fine.”

Despite the loss, Anderson praised the Timberwolves for a strong season, in which they only lost in the regular season to larger schools – such as DeKalb, Belvidere and Woodstock.

“A great season. We’re going to miss our seniors,” Anderson said.

NIU SPORTS BRIEFS Softball teams falls to Miami (Ohio) in MAC tournament

The Northern Illinois softball team got the go-ahead run to the plate but lost, 2-1, to No. 2 Miami (Ohio) in the third round of the Mid-American Conference tournament on Friday in Akron, Ohio.

The No. 4 Huskies will face No. 3 Ohio in an elimination game at 9:30 a.m. today.

With a win, the Huskies (35-19) will need to beat Miami twice to win the title.

Baseball wins series opener

Luke Yapp had three RBIs, and Northern Illinois won, 9-5, at Eastern Michigan in the series opener.

Brandon Mallder and Johnny Zubek each added two RBIs for the Huskies, who play the second game at 2 p.m. today.

Joey Ceja picked up the win, throwing four scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts.

The Royal Lions (16-7) opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Adi Johnson slipped past the defense of the Cogs (5-17) and beat Ruehl 1-on-1. Ruehl already had turned away four shots to that point and would finish with eight saves.

Rockford Christian took 18 first-half shots but scored only once. The Cogs didn’t attempt a shot in the first half.

“We dominated that first half, and we should have put quite a few more away,” Rockford Christian Kevin Obee said. “We missed a couple just wide.

The keeper had some great saves for Genoa in that first half, for sure.”

The Cogs wasted no time scoring in the second half. Danyelle Crozier slipped past the Royal Lions’ defense and knocked in a shot past goalie Annie Harris 66 seconds into the half.

“In the second half, we came out a little slow,” Obee said. “We got caught a little, made a mistake in the back, missed the ball and she came through.

She did a nice job taking it back and getting it past our goalie.”

But then the Royal Lions attacked the Cogs’ defense, and this time it didn’t have an answer. Johnson scored with 35:11 left, then again in the 48th minute. Hillary Noakes added the final goal with 31:02 left.

DeKalb teams eliminated from badminton state finals

The two doubles entries of the DeKalb badminton team were eliminated from the IHSA State Championships on Friday night at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

The team of Helene Collin and Alyssa Wagner lost, 21-11, 21-12, to Angela Li and Lana Millman (Hinsdale Central) and fell, 22-20, 21-7, to Jordyn Cohen and Ellie Wilson (Deerfield).

The team of Holly Trapp and Hui Zhu fell, 21-9, 21-9, to Dhun Patel and Wasinee Siewsrichol (Schaumburg) and were knocked out with a 21-19, 21-9 loss to Brooke Gorski and Megan Kalinowski (Maine West).

“This is the third straight season we have finished in the top four, finishing third two seasons ago and fourth this season and last,” Royals coach Greg Burks said. “We graduate three seniors – Courtney Carls, Madison Davies and Sophia Peters – that were critical to our success the past three seasons. They have represented themselves and the Lady Royals track program very well, and we will miss them tremendously.”

Carls will be joining Harrod at the state meet, taking third in the triple jump, clearing 34 feet, 1 inch and topping the qualifying mark by 7 inches.

Tate said he was pleased with how Ruehl played, especially in the openinghalf.

“The first half, that was awesome,” Tate said. “The second half, I thought she did all right. Some of those shots, you just can’t get to.”

The Royal Lions advance to the Class 1A Genoa-Kingston Sectional semifinals to face Stillman Valley at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.

The season comes to end for the young Cogs, who have only four seniors and six juniors on the playoff roster that featured 28 players.

“It was tough, disappointing,” Tate said. “We didn’t get the wins we thought we would. But we’re a young team, just three seniors on the field tonight, and it was kind of a rebuilding year. We lost all our scorers and had difficulty finding someone to step up and be our scorer.”

New OC Loggains says offense will evolve

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – The Bears had 64 players on the field at Halas Hall to open their rookie minicamp Friday. It also happened to be offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains’ first meeting with the media since his promotion in January.

Coach John Dowell Fox and general Loggains manager Ryan Pace wanted continuity within the offense, and Loggains said “the shell of the offense will stay the same … but it will evolve like it would have if Adam (Gase) would have been here.”

The much-discussed rapport Loggains has with quarterback Jay Cutler adds to that continuity from year to year, allowing Cutler to build off an impressive 2015 with Loggains as the play-caller.

“I think it’s a mutual respect. I think I respect him and he respects me,” Loggains said of his relationship with Cutler.

“I think that when you have that mutual respect, then all dialogue is legal. So whatever I say to him, he knows where it’s coming from and vice versa.”

The Cutler connection, and Loggains’ role in the quarterback’s performance, was not lost on Fox. “I thought [Loggains] did a tremendous job. As I mentioned before when we made that change, I think most offenses come through the quarterback, so I think that relationship is important. I saw tremendous growth in Jay from one year ago,” he said. “… Dowell has done it in the league. He is a sharp coach. He’s done it before with the quarterbacks room as well as with the rest of the offensive players.”

It is yet another new coordinator for Cutler. Obviously, Loggains is different from new play-callers Cutler has had in the past, but he has the same overall goal.

“I’m looking forward to coaching him every day and continuing the process we’ve made and build off that where we ended last year,” he said, “but we definitely could be better.”

ROCKFORD – Rockford Christian kept taking shots in the first half, and Madeline Ruehl kept turning most of them away.

Then when Genoa-Kingston scored in the first 70 seconds of the second half, it seemed the Cogs had new life in the Class 1A Rockford Christian Regional championship match. But Rockford Christian scored three minutes later, then tacked on two more in the next four minutes in a 4-1 win.

Russell, Cubs end brief losing skid

CHICAGO – Ask Cubs manager Joe Maddon to describe Addison Russell and he will respond with two words.

Slow heartbeat.

But two days after Cubdom was thrown into temporary panic mode when forced to deal with the first twogame losing streak of the season, it was the Cubs’ slow heartbeat who pumped some life back into the on-going North Side party.

The Cubs shortstop led off the fourth-inning scoring with a three-run homer – one of three the Cubs hit in a 9-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday at Wrigley Field. Not only did the win snap the Cubs’ two-game skid, but improved Maddon’s club to 14-2 this season against its National League Central rivals.

Russell’s blast broke the afternoon offensive silence after Cubs starter Jason Hammel and Pirates left-hander Francisco Liriano each eased through three scoreless innings.

After Hammel breezed through the fourth, Ben Zobrist singled off Liria-

The Cubs followed up their threerun fourth inning with a five-run fifth as Kris Bryant and David Ross each touched up Liriano for homers. With the wind blowing out, the Cubs’ offense provided Hammel with plenty of run support to move Hammel to 5-0 and he lowered his ERA to 1.77.

Hammel commanded his fastball throughout the outing when he allowed one earned run and struck out two before leaving with two outs in the seventh inning.

Once Russell got the home run parade started, Ross got into the act with the 99th career homer. Ross, who sidestepped questions of a possible return next season if he continues to produce, stepped into the Cubs’ dugout as his teammates gathered around, each holding one finger in the air to signify the lone home run that stands between Ross and the century mark.

While Hammel joked about the party that is coming once Ross connects on his next home run, the 39-year-old downplayed the achievement, keeping his focus on the real reason why he came back for one final season.

“Listen, if I don’t get 100 (home runs), it’s not like I’ve had a horrible career,” said Ross, who went 3 for 4 and had his first three-hit game since 2014 and his first three-RBI game since 2012.

“I am who I am. These guys are rooting for me to get 100, but if I don’t, I won’t go home and sulk.

“I’ll hit 99 and we’ll win a World Series and that will make me just as happy as 100 – that’s for sure.”

Sox’s ace 4 wins shy of tying team record for best start

“There are a number of things he’s done that nobody else has done or very few have done. Add it to the list.”

Sale has accounted for a third of the Sox’s victory total, helping them improve their American League-best record to 24-12. With a major league-high eight wins, he almost is halfway to his career high 17 in 2012, his first year as a starter, and the Sox aren’t even a fourth of the way through the season.

With an ERA of 1.67, he might be pitching better than ever, and the wins are piling up because the Sox are scoring runs for him. For the fourth straight time, the Sox provided Sale with at least six runs.

“I don’t know if there’s a starting pitcher in the league that would complain about that,” Sale said.

“I’m not going to say it makes it easier, but it just takes the pressure off you and allows you to go out there and focus on throwing strikes. It makes it a little bit less stressful.”

The Sox spotted Sale a three-run lead in the second inning with back-toback doubles by Brett Lawrie and Avila and a two-run single by Jose Abreu against struggling Yankees starter

Luis Severino, who would leave during the third inning with a sore right triceps and will go on the 15-day disabled list.

After the Yankees’ Chase Headley – a noted thorn in Sale’s side – homered leading off the second, the Sox scored four in the third on Eaton’s two-run double and Jimmy Rollins’ two-run homer.

It was cruise time from there for Sale, who retired 15 in a row from the fourth inning through the eighth.

Sale hasn’t had a 10-strikeout game, but the aim from spring training was to throw fewer pitches and go deeper into games.

“That’s the new him,” manager Robin Ventura said. “He can get strikeouts when he needs to. But he understands the way we used our bullpen in Texas (last series) for him to go out there and do that is a big shot in the arm.”

Asked if Sale is the best pitcher in the AL, Ventura said, “I know he’s very good and he’s playing for the White Sox. I could give a [expletive] if you want to say he’s the best pitcher in the American League. I know he’s going to be very good for us.”

NEW YORK – Chris Sale has achieved so much already in four full seasons as a starting pitcher, including setting the franchise’s season strikeout record in 2015, All-Star games appearances and top-six Cy Young voting in each one, and a club-record 32 career games of 10 strikeouts or more – including a run of eight straight starts last season with 10 or more Ks. But Sale never had raced to an 8-0 start, until Friday that is, when he breezed past the New York Yankees in a 7-1 complete-game victory to halt a two-game White Sox losing streak while becoming the fourth pitcher in franchise history to win his first eight starts.

He has four more to go to catch Eddie Cicotte, who won his first 12 for the

1919 Black Sox. But Sale joined John Whitehead (8-0 in 1935) and Jon Garland (8-0 in 2005) by winning eight out of the gate. He also is the first pitcher in the majors to win his first eight since Brandon Webb was 9-0 in 2008 for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

“You always feel like you might see something special,’’ said catcher Alex Avila, who caught Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander with the Detroit Tigers before joining the Chris Sale Sox this season. “That was the big thing with Scherzer and Verlander, was every time they were pitching, you really got a feeling that something special’s going to happen.

It’s definitely a similar feeling (with Sale).”

Against the Yankees, Sale allowed six hits, struck out six and walked none in notching his second complete game of the season and 10th of his career. He threw 99 pitches, 71 for strikes.

“Add 8-0 to the list that he’s had throughout his career,” right fielder Adam Eaton (3 for 4, two RBIs) said.

Common cold cure not coming Dear Dr. K: Is there any way to prevent a

cold?

Dear Reader: Now, there’s a short, simple question. If only I had a short, simple answer.

Colds are caused by viruses – more than 200 different types. Because the infection is not caused by bacteria, antibiotics don’t help. Over-the-counter cold medicines are available, but not always effective.

So the search continues for anything that can fend off cold-causing viruses or speed their exit from your body. Here is a rundown of some of the candidates: • Vitamins. Biochemist Linus Pauling proposed large daily doses of vitamin C – 1,000 to 2,000 milligrams (mg) – could prevent colds. Pauling was a genius who made major scientific discoveries and was awarded the Nobel Prize. But even geniuses can be wrong. By and large, research hasn’t supported his assertion. One study did report a benefit, but just in people who engage in extreme exercise.

There’s some evidence vitamins D and E might help fend off respiratory infections, but the evidence is weak. I don’t recommend either vitamin for cold-fighting purposes.

• Echinacea. The research hasn’t been very encouraging. One review found some evidence a certain part of one particular species of the Echinacea plant family might be an effective early treatment for colds in adults. Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

Other plant-based treatments, such as ginseng, elderberry, garlic and olive leaf, have been offered as cold preventives and cures. But none has emerged as clearly effective.

• Zinc. The results have been mixed. Two studies in children found zinc might reduce the number of colds. The evidence in adults is unclear and hotly debated. Taking too

• Exercise. Here’s another reason to work out. Regular moderate exercise seems to invigorate the immune system. While there are abundant health benefits from regular exercise, I’d say the evidence that exercise reduces the number of colds is pretty weak.

• Sleep. Your mother was right: Getting a good night’s sleep keeps you healthy and may keep colds away. In one study, people who got less than seven hours of sleep a night were almost three times as likely to get a cold as those who got eight or more hours of sleep.

• Probiotics. A study in 2015 reported specific probiotics (lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium) reduced the number of respiratory infections (not just the common cold) and the length of time people were sick. However, the quality of the study was not very good.

I know I’m going to get letters from people who swear a vitamin, or an herbal preparation, or zinc works for them. I’m really not disagreeing with them.

Studies ask whether a particular treatment works for the average person. A treatment that does not work for the average person still may work for some people; perhaps they have different genes. If you’re convinced a treatment helps you, and if it doesn’t pose any risk (and most of those above don’t), then why not use it?

Note the bidding. Yes, North, with so many quacks, might have raised one no-trump to three no-trump. But here that contract can be defeated if West guesses to lead the club ace and continue the suit from the top. (None of that fourth-highest rubbish!) However, with an unstopped doubleton, it is sensible for North to use Stayman.

Then, when he rebids three no-trump over two hearts, South knows that his partner has four spades and corrects to game in that suit.

Many Wests would cash their second club trick, then wonder where to turn. At that point, their best move would be to feign a sudden illness and to flee the premises. When dummy comes down with three hearts, West should realize that his partner must be void in that suit. So, at trick two, West should shift to a heart.

East ruffs and returns a club, then receives a second ruff for down one.
