Fewer people ‘living the dream’ POLL

“How you doing?” I’ll ask a neighbor or a friend when I see them.

“Living the dream,” they’ll answer.

It’s something we say to each other. I’ve always taken “the dream” to mean the American Dream.

For most people the American Dream is the dream of a middle-class or upper-middle-class lifestyle: having balance between work and leisure time, a comfortable-but-not-opulent existence, 2.5 children, and enough money that you can take the family on a road trip once in a while.

Maybe you can throw a boat in there, or a motorcycle, or, I don’t know, a remodeled kitchen with quartz countertops that your wife just had to have.

What do you have to earn to live the American – middle class – Dream? According to the Pew Research Center, in 2014 it was somewhere between $42,000 and $125,000 a year for a family of three.

But Pew said fewer people are living the dream these days.

The independent research group found that the income gap between rich and poor is widening, particularly in major metro areas.

In fact, in almost a quarter of major metro areas, middle-income earners are no longer the majority. That’s despite the fact that the income qualification to be considered middle

class has declined since 1999.

The story for the people in the middle is one of falling incomes and struggling to keep up, according to The Associated Press story we published Thursday.

Or maybe you’ve seen the story about how 47 percent of middle-class households surveyed by the Federal Reserve Board said they would have to borrow or sell something to come up with $400 in an emergency.

One of the things that make us feel good about the places we live – whether it’s our hometown, our home county, state, or our country – is the quality of life it offers. This data doesn’t paint such a rosy picture.

We need to reverse that trend, and get more people “living the dream.” The people running for office this fall need to devote some focus to how they propose to let more people in on it.

TODAY’S TALKER 2ND WEBSITE POSTS AUCTION FOR GUN THAT KILLED TRAYVON MARTIN

MIAMI – An online gun auction website yanked George Zimmerman’s ad to sell the pistol he used to kill unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin, saying it wanted no part in the deal, but a second site offered to post it.

A listing for the weapon was removed from the GunBroker.com site Thursday morning, minutes after the auction was to begin, as negative traffic about the sale exploded online. In a statement posted on its website, GunBroker.com said listings are user generated, and that the company reserved the right to reject listings at its discretion.

Zimmerman never contacted anyone at the site and no one there “has any relationship with Zimmerman,” the company wrote in its statement.

It added, “We want no part in the listing on our web site or in any of the publicity it is receiving.”

Hours later, United Gun Group tweeted that it would post Zimmerman’s ad. The new link was posted, along with a statement from Zimmerman. However, the site apparently went down a few minutes later. The site calls itself a “social market place for the firearms community.”

Critics called the planned auction an insensitive move to profit from the slaying.

Adventurer tells YMCA awards diners about discovering herself

By KEITH HERNANDEZ news@daily-shronicle.com Explorer Hannah McKeand is no stranger to challenges.

She found herself in the emptiness of the desert, journeyed to the South Pole in record time at 32 and faced her fear of public speaking Thursday as the Y Community Awards Dinner’s guest speaker.

The Y Community Awards Dinner is an annual event in which three people are recognized for their efforts to make DeKalb County a better place, according to the Kishwaukee YMCA website. The Kishwaukee YMCA named high school On the Web student Jennifer Kuo the Outstanding Youth Leader; named retiree Joel Mauer the Oustanding Community Leader; and Frank Visit DailyTurza, market Chronicle.com manager at First Midwest Bank, was for a video. named Emerging Community Leader, for their outstanding leadership and community service.

The night ended with McKeand telling a room full of more than 300 strangers the intimate details of how she turned from a life of comfort in London and trekked further into the unknown than she previously thought possible.

“I always say I just said yes too often, and this is what happened,” McKeand said. “If you’d met me 15 years ago, you would have seen a different person in front of you. … I was unfit, I don’t think I’d ever owned a pair of hiking boots or any outdoor clothing.”

However, a bad breakup and the death of her godfather left McKeand with the desire to see the world and the money to do so. Her first journey took her to the Sahara, where she said she fell in love with the vast emptiness of the desert.

“I started to discover this quiet part of myself,” McKeand said. “No longer was I this high-heel-wearing, cocktail-party-attending, marketing manager for a theater company in London.

I discovered this part of me that was much, much quieter and much, much smaller than that original person, and I really liked the feeling of feeling small and tiny in the world.”

It would not be the last time McKeand felt small. Striving to expand that feeling, she said she wanted to explore

Her next journey would last 56 days and take her from the Antarctic coast to the South Pole. She surpassed her expectations so much so that she wanted to beat the then record of 42 days. She

reached the South Pole in 39 days, two years and one sailing trip around the world later.

“I got myself dropped off and headed off into the nothing by myself, and it was OK, because I was going toward something. It’s so important to have goals in

life. This was news to me,” McKeand said. “None of us get the chance to really be alone in the modern world, even if we spend a weekend home alone … you encounter somebody somewhere.

It’s a really good experience and a great feeling.”

Officials warn residents of floodwater risks

By RHONDA GILLESPIE rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Officials are making sandbags available and are warning residents to keep out of standing water after an overnight Wednesday rainstorm caused the Kishwaukee River to rise, leaving some roads and parks flooded.

“The river came up a little higher than what [was] anticipated,” said Tim Holdeman, director of DeKalb Public Works.

He said Fairview Road and Taylor Street were among the city streets with the most standing water.

City and county officials are waiting for the river to recede. Also, DeKalb Public Works crews set up pumps in some streets to pull water from sewers. Holdeman said it was a preventive measure to keep water from flooding nearby homes.

There were several inches of standing water in some places Thursday.

Water crept up part of a sliding board at Lions Park on Taylor Street in DeKalb. On the backside of the park, half of Tyler Elementary School’s parking lot was flooded. The greens at River Heights Golf Course were submerged and some county roads had the shoulder gravel disturbed.

“Pretty much anything that borders the Kish is underwater,” said Mat Emkem, superintendent of parks and development for the DeKalb Park District.

“None of this resulted in any significant damage,” NIU spokesman Joe King said. He added that order was re-

stored Thursday morning.

It will be days before facilities at Lions Park in DeKalb are usable, Emken said. Events planned there for this weekend have been canceled. He explained that the playground equip-

ment and shelter there will have to be sanitized with bleach.

The DeKalb Fire Department issued a bulletin Thursday urging residents to stay out of floodwaters, as they could be contaminated.

AFSCME Council 31 asks for mediator in talks with county

By RHONDA GILLESPIE rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Despite high hopes, negotiators for DeKalb County and the labor union representing 150 county nursing home workers failed to reach a contract agreement on Thursday.

Now the union has asked for a federal mediator, and workers have scheduled an informational picket outside the facility for next week.

“We felt that we were being reasonable at the table,” said Sara Dorner, the staff representative for American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Council 31. “We came to the table with high hopes today thinking that we would get an agreement.”

The union represents about 150 county nursing home workers, in addition to 60 health department employees and 34 county government personnel.

Dorner said raises and bonuses are at the center of the impasse, after a mutual agreement was previously reached on removing a cap on health insurance premiums workers must pay. She explained that the county has offered only 1 percent raises annually to the nursing home workers.

The bargaining unit represents certified nursing assistants, licensed practical nurses, and housekeeping, dietary and laundry workers who, in most cases, are paid minimum wage.

The county’s offered raise, Dorner

said, would amount to about 8 cents an hour for those workers.

Now, the union wants a mediator to step in, and no date for that has been determined.

In the meantime, the nursing home workers are set to demonstrate May 19 outside the DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center, 2600 N. Annie Glidden Road.

“I am aware of the proposal for the picketing,” said Paul Miller, head of the county’s planning and zoning department who also represents the county administration on all three of the AFSCME bargaining units. “I take no exception to that. That is their right, the county would never object to that.”

He said the union’s call for arbitration doesn’t signal acrimony between the two groups.

“I wouldn’t characterize it that way,” Miller said. “I think bringing in a mediator is a positive step in reaching a mutually agreeable contract.”

Miller would not divulge more about what the county plans to do going forward as part of this current collective bargaining.

“It would be inappropriate for me to talk about the details of negotiations while they’re ongoing. I don’t want to compromise the ability to arrive at a consensus,” said Miller.

The three units have been working under an extension of the contract that expired Dec. 31.

ELWANDA MARIE EBEL Elwanda Marie (Pilcher) Ebel was born in Locke, AR on Feb. 11, 1922, to Carl and Ethal Pilcher. She is the oldest of six children. She married her “one and only”, Albert Ebel II, on Aug. 29, 1942, who preceded her in death June 22, 2014.

Elwanda was not only her husband’s helpmate on the farm for many years, but she was very active in her church, community and children’s activities. She was a long time member of the Marengo Grange where she served as lecturer before moving and joining Riley Grange and serving there also. She held county and state offices, attended State Grange as a delegate and served as Master’s Wife at the county level. She never missed helping out at the turkey dinners, bake sales and the county fair food tent. She was a wonderful cook and was able to bless people with her skills of cooking. She won many blue ribbons for her pies, breads, crocheted afghans and sewing.

Elwanda and Albert, along with the family, installed officers for the Granges around the Stateline for many years.

She also served as deaconess and on many boards at the First Baptist Church of Marengo.

She was the “Egg-Fryer Queen” of the May Breakfast for many years. She was in charge of the Wednesday Night Family Dinner and never failed to produce a wonderful homecooked meal for the crowd. Elwanda “Loved On” people who were home-bound and in rest homes. She faithfully visited them on a weekly basis. When she could give a gift, she was her happiest. She loved the Lord and it showed.

If we could add all the miles she drove for her children to be in 4-H and church activities we would wear out several cars!

She was a gifted cake decorator and made many brides and anniversary couples happy.

She made most of her grandchildren’s cakes for their weddings. All the grandchildren had grandma-made birthday cakes. Elwanda baked pies for a Marengo restaurant that had people calling for reserved pieces ... oh to have one of those again. She worked for a time at Wisted’s Deli in Marengo and shared her wonderful recipes for potato salad and baked beans.

She was a “Tops” member for many years and became a “Kops” for 19 years. Elwanda enjoyed the social aspect of the group, was a great encouragement to many, and kept her weight in check for the rest of her life. She was proud of her accomplishment and loved the group of people she met.

Survivors include her son, Albert (Linda Kay) Ebel III; daughters, Dorene (Milan) Reimer, and Carla (Richard) Walter. 10 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sister, Winnie Evelyn Sullivan; brother, Ralph Perryman, many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert; her brothers, James, Robert and Kurt Perryman.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday,

May 14, 2016, at 11 a.m. in the Wait Ross Allanson Funeral & Cremation Services Chapel, 201 S. Main St., Algonquin. Burial will follow at Windridge Memorial Park, Cary. Visitation will be held on Saturday morning in the chapel from 9 a.m. until the time of services.

Funeral Mass will be Monday, May 16, John F. Nolan age 97 of 2016, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church DeKalb, IL, passed away in DeKalb with the Rev. Matthew McMorrow peacefully in his residence officiating. in DeKalb.

3-car crash in Sycamore leads to rush-hour closure of Peace Road

By ERIC R. OLSON eolson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Peace Road was closed for more than an hour Thursday between Route 64 and Dekalb Avenue after a three-car, chain reaction crash that sent two people to the hospital, police said.

The incident happened about 7:15 a.m. Thursday, when a northbound Chevrolet Malibu rear-ended a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that was stopped at a red light at Peace Road and Sarah Drive.

The impact pushed the pickup into the rear end of the vehicle in front of it, a 2015 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Jason N. Lupton, 37, of DeKalb, police said.

The driver of the Malibu, 24-year-old Samantha Schultz, was cited for failure

to reduce speed to avoid a crash, Sycamore police Cmdr. Steve Cook said.

The speed limit in the area is 45 mph.

“It appears she was traveling at a fair rate of speed,” Cook said. “There’s no indication of any braking.”

Schultz and the driver of the Silverado pickup, Derek W. Stephansen-Fitzgerald, 30, of Genoa, were transported to the hospital. Their injuries did not appear to have been life threatening, Cook said.

Traffic was diverted around the crash scene for more than an hour, and it took some time to clear the scene because the impact pushed the Silverado pickup onto the hood of the Malibu. First responders could be heard to cheer when a tow truck driver succeeded in pulling the pickup down.

The road was reopened to traffic by 8:30 a.m., Cook said.

SYCAMORE – Officers tasked with patrolling Sycamore School District 427 hallways will leave this school year with mostly minor incidents to report.

Sycamore officers Ryan Hooper and Stacy Binkowski divide their time between Sycamore High School, Sycamore Middle School and the district’s five elementary schools, helping not only to keep order, but also intervene when troublesome behavior occurs.

This past school year, the officers documented a total of 84 reports, with nine incidents occurring at elementary schools, 18 at the middle school, and 57 at the high school, Hooper said.

The numbers reflect only incidents that happened on school property.

“Our goal is not to put the kids into a criminal justice system,” Hooper said.

“We want to intervene with these kids before something criminal happens.”

Among the most serious crimes was a fire set in an administration office in October. Two Sycamore teens were later charged with arson in connection to the incident, in which a flammable object was thrown through one of the school’s windows.

“This year we had the arson, which took us months to get through and, thankfully, we’ll close that out with some arrests and get that going,” Hooper said. “Sometimes the wheels of justice move a little slow.”

The remainder of the high school’s

reports largely involved minor traffic accidents in the school parking lot, followed by theft or misplaced property, Hooper said.

“Some of those may just be lost phones or something, but we classify it as a theft,” he said.

Police involvement at the middle school was most commonly in response to “miscellaneous” juvenile matters, including behavioral problems.

“Sometimes, it’s just a disturbed student that we just have to take a report on just to document what we’ve done, what steps the school has [taken] and if we’ve referred them to other services,” Hooper said.

Similarly, officers took nine reports at district elementary schools this school year, regarding mostly minor run-ins, Hooper said.

“Something happens and we feel the need to write it down just so we can document it happened,” he said. “Even if we haven’t done anything, just to say that we were there, we saw something, we were called there for a reason.”

High school Principal Tim Carlson has noticed a difference in student behavior since employing the school resource officers, he said.

“When [the officer] comes in on a Monday morning and reads all the (police) reports, and knows there’s an issue in the community,” Carlson said, “he can head out to those kids Monday morning and talk to them to make sure that those things don’t spread to the school.”

By BRETT ROWLAND browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – An investigation by the Illinois State Police into the heroin overdose death of an inmate at the DeKalb County Jail found a single instance where proper search procedures weren’t followed, but no evidence that the mistake was connected to the overdose death.

A deputy failed to conduct a strip search of an inmate in one instance where such a search was called for, but DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said investigators have no reason to believe the lapse was related to Brandon A. Washington’s death in February.

“Procedures are in place for a reason,” Scott said.

He said the matter had been addressed with the deputy. Scott also said all evidence gathered by state police

“The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its criminal investigation into how and by whom the contraband drugs were brought into the jail,” Scott said in a news release.

An autopsy showed that Washington died of a heroin overdose while in the jail in February.

Officers found Washington unconscious in his cell about 2 a.m. Feb. 8 and performed CPR before calling paramedics to take him to Kishwaukee Hospital, police said. A preliminary investigation found Washington had been drinking homemade alcohol with

cellmate Christopher Gerken of Sycamore, who is awaiting trial on murder charges in connection with the killing of a DeKalb man in October, police said.

Washington ​was convicted in 2010 of attempted murder and other charges for shooting Jason Johnson of DeKalb in the face at point-blank range in May 2009. He had been sentenced to 38 years in prison, but was returned to the DeKalb County Jail by court order in November after filing a petition for post-conviction relief.

State police investigators found no evidence that jail employees were to blame for Washington’s death, DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard

Schmack wrote in a letter to a special agent with the state police.

“Based on all the evidence gathered by your staff, including the 598-page narrative report along with various videos and other material referred therein, it is my determination that no criminal charges are warranted or appropriate against any employees of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office,” Schmack’s letter said. “Nothing in your investigation even points in the direction of there being probable cause supporting any criminal charge against Sheriff’s Department personnel.”

The sheriff’s office released the letter Thursday.

Last month, Scott said sheriff’s investigators had identified a person of interest in the case. He said Thursday that investigators were following other leads and had sent evidence off to be analyzed.

By IVAN MORENO The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers approved $700 million Thursday to partially finance cash-strapped human services programs during the state’s historic budget stalemate, even as the governor considered tax increases and cuts that could finally move the state toward a full spending plan.

Lawmakers overwhelmingly approved the short-term aid, undermining Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s idea of a “grand bargain” to pass a whole budget by month’s end instead of another temporary fix during his nearly yearlong standoff with Democrats.

Lawyer: Hastert won’t appeal conviction, sentence

CHICAGO – Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert will not appeal his conviction or 15-month prison sentence in a hush-money case that centered on his sexual abuse of students when he was a high school wrestling coach in Illinois decades ago, his lead attorney said Thursday.

That means the next step for the Illinois Republican is to report to prison.

Asked whether his 74-year-old client would appeal his conviction or sentence – or any other aspect of the case – attorney Thomas Green responded in an email to The Associated Press: “No.” The deadline to file an appeal is the end of this week.

Legal challenge filed against Illinois ballot remap effort

CHICAGO – An attorney linked to top Illinois Democrats has filed a legal challenge against a ballot effort to let voters decide if the power to draw political boundaries should go to an independent commission instead of elected officials.

Well-known Chicago elections attorney Michael Kasper, who successfully fought a similar 2014 ballot initiative, filed the Cook County lawsuit Wednesday on behalf of neighborhood and minority advocacy organizations. Kasper has been general counsel for House Speaker Michael Madigan, who’s also the state Democratic Party leader.

CHICAGO – A parks advocacy group that’s trying to stop construction of “Star Wars” filmmaker George Lucas’ museum on Chicago’s lakefront said it deserves its day in court.

Friends of the Parks late Wednesday filed its response in federal appeals court to the city of Chicago’s motion to dismiss the Lucas museum lawsuit. Mayor Rahm Emanuel turned to the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last week in an effort to have the parks group’s lawsuit dismissed so that Lucas won’t build his museum in another city.

Friends of the Parks said the case should be decided in federal court, where it originally filed its complaint.

Lucas wants to build the museum on Lake Michigan’s shores near downtown Chicago. The parks group said the plans violate laws restricting development along Lake Michigan.

Judge allows case against Duckworth to go to trial

A seven-year-old workplace retaliation lawsuit against Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Tammy Duckworth will remain a campaign issue into the late summer after an Illinois judge said Thursday that the case could go to trial before the November election.

Union County Judge Mark Boie set a tentative trial date of August and rejected an effort by government lawyers to dismiss the case, which stems from Duckworth’s time as head of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs.

Illinois Republicans have highlighted the lawsuit, seeking to thwart Duckworth’s bid against Sen. Mark Kirk, a first-term moderate in a Democratic-leaning state.

Trump, House speaker pledge to work together

By ERICA WERNER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Straining to mend their party after months of chaos, Donald Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan declared themselves “totally committed” to working together Thursday after a fence-mending personal meeting. Ryan praised Trump as “very warm and genuine,” and suggested that after initial hesitance he may well end up endorsing the GOP candidate for president.

“We will have policy disputes. There is no two ways about that. The question is, can we unify on the common core principles that make our party?” Ryan said. “And I’m very encouraged that the answer to that question is yes.”

Trump, who used the day to launch a robust charm offensive with members of Congress, broadcast his own enthusiasm, on Twitter and on TV. “I really think we had a great meeting today, and I think we agree on a lot of things and it’ll be a little process, but it’ll come along. I’m pretty sure,” he said in an interview recorded for Fox News Channel’s “Hannity.”

The surprisingly fervent show of unity capped a remarkable week that began with Ryan, the GOP’s top elected office-holder and its 2012 vice presidential nominee, turning his back on his party’s presumptive presidential nominee just days after Trump had effectively clinched the nomination.

to back Trump, who had succeeded in insulting women, Latinos, disabled people and many conservatives in the course of a brutal primary season. He also has alarmed the Republican establishment with proposals including deporting millions of immigrants and barring Muslims from the country.

Yet in the days since, many GOP lawmakers – and voters themselves – have made peace with the reality that Trump is their candidate and therefore their only hope of defeating likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Although some in the GOP fear Trump could spell election disaster and cost Republicans control of the Senate and seats in the House, recent polls have shown a closer race, helping their comfort level.

Ryan himself insisted from the beginning that his only goal was real party unity. His allies in the House have predicted he will get behind Trump in the end, and on Thursday Ryan sounded as if he was well on his way.

“We talked about what it takes to unify, where our differences were and how we can bridge these gaps going forward,” Ryan said, praising Trump’s “unparalleled” accomplishment in getting more votes already than any Republican presidential candidate in history – 10.9 million, even before California and New Jersey vote in June.

The two discussed “core principles” including limited government, the Constitution, separation of powers and pro-life philosophy, Ryan said.

Congratulations to 2016 graduates Within the next few weeks, thousands of high school and college seniors will be graduating in DeKalb County, ending one chapter in their lives and beginning a new and exciting one.

Graduation season kicks off today with commencement ceremonies for graduate students at Northern Illinois University, with undergraduate ceremonies to follow on Saturday.

On Sunday, Genoa-Kingston High School will kick off the high school graduation season, with DeKalb High School seniors the last to graduate, June 4.

First, let us say congratulations to all 2016 graduates. You’ve made your parents, your siblings, your friends and relatives proud.

While many graduates are looking ahead to their future, as they should, take time to celebrate the moment. Enjoy some time with your friends, teachers and family. No matter who you are, or what you have done in life until now, there is always room for improvement.

For some, more schooling is ahead, and perhaps more independence. Others will make their first entries into the working world and take on adult responsibilities.

The ticking clock on Zika The Republican-controlled Congress has wasted entirely too much time sitting on President Barack Obama’s request for emergency funding to combat the arrival of the Zika virus to the mainland U.S. The National Governors Association, not exactly an alarmist group, declared that “the nation is on the threshold of a public health emergency.” Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said that Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory where the virus is already on the move, “is on the precipice of a really serious disaster.” Now that Congress has returned from its recess, it is time to buckle down and approve the president’s request for about $1.9 billion in emergency funding, or something close to it.

Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Mathews Burwell told us this week that, although the administration has already shifted about half a billion dollars from fighting Ebola to the battle against Zika, that is not enough. There is no vaccine ready nor any known effective therapy to stop Zika. Without the full emergency funding, she said, research on creating a vaccine and work on badly needed diagnostics will slow, while surveillance and tracking of those sickened will be hampered. Although Zika causes only mild symptoms in most cases, thousands of babies, if their mothers are infected during pregnancy, could be vulnerable to serious birth defects. The virus causes fetal neural abnormalities such as microcephaly.

The time to prepare for the onslaught of viruscarrying Aedes mosquitoes was yesterday – and yet Congress has stalled the president’s February funding request. The House Appropriations Committee Chair-

man, Harold Rogers, R-Kentucky, has claimed the proposal lacked enough specifics. Here are some specifics: In Puerto Rico, where 631 cases of Zika already have been recorded, the virus is spreading rapidly from direct transmission. Although all 472 cases in the continental United States have come from travelers, Florida, the Gulf Coast and California also may be vulnerable to local transmission once the weather warms.

Where it hits, Zika is not easy to deal with. “Vector control” – fighting the mosquitoes, to dampen the virus’s spread – is the front line of defense, but that job is handled by a crazy quilt of state and local government offices. Warning the public, creating and scaling up diagnostics, and carrying out spraying and other prophylactic measures are all vital, and these take time to prepare, time that is being lost on Capitol Hill.

Vaccine development also requires a long lead time. Fauci told us the first vaccine candidate will begin an initial clinical trial of about 80 people in September, and if all goes well, could be ready for approval in 2018. This will be especially important if the Zika virus remains a threat at that time. We can’t know now if that will be the case, but it makes good sense to fund vaccine development robustly at this early stage.

We are told that House Appropriations Committee staff, still dissatisfied with the administration’s request, are working up their own package. That’s encouraging – but they must not dally. It is long past time for Congress to deliver the money needed to fight a virus that, if unchecked, could ruin thousands of young lives.

Trump is terrible. Good thing there’s this ‘nominee’ guy!

He has a 65 percent unfavorable rating. He is prone to firing off unexpectedly at the mouth. He either doesn’t understand or actively wants to destroy the credit of the United States. If you’re a senator running for reelection and his name shows up at the top of the ticket, you might as well tie an albatross around your neck and head out to sea.

So what to do? Speaking Trump’s name gives him power. He is like Voldemort in that regard. (Also, he is immortal and cannot die as long as his Towers survive. His buildings are his horcruxes and contain fragments of his soul.)

The trick is not to speak his name.

But fortunately for senators in tough, competitive seats, there is another option. You don’t have to endorse Trump. You can just support the Nominee of the Party.

These are not the same thing at all!

They are quite different. The Nominee is everything Trump isn’t.

Here’s Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., talking about Trump: “I have strong

disagreements with Mr. Trump.”

Here’s McCain talking about the Nominee: “The nominee of the party, the party of Ronald Reagan and Teddy Roosevelt, has my support.”

Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., won’t endorse Trump. In February, she said, “There’s no place in our society for racism and bigotry, and I found Mr. Trump’s response to David Duke and the KKK disgusting and offensive.”

But she will support the nominee. Her communications director, Liz Johnson, confirmed as much to the New Hampshire Union Leader. “As she’s said from the beginning, Kelly plans to support the nominee.”

It is good that there is this third option. The Nominee sounds wonderful.

He seems to have a strong base of support. Senators who have nothing positive to say about Trump at all speak glowingly of the mysterious Nominee.

Very little is known about him, apart from the fact that he is probably statesmanlike and definitely not embarrassing to have at the top of the ticket, and probably Reagan would have liked to have a beer with him, or something, but what more do you need to know?

Andrew Kaczynski at BuzzFeed first noted the groundswell of support for this Nominee guy among high-ranking senators during a KTAR Arizona radio interview with McCain, Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska. The Nominee, McCain confirmed, has his support. Trump, not so much. “I’m not comfortable with a lot of the things that he has done,” McCain noted.

Sullivan concurred. “There’s a number of things I don’t agree with in terms of what Donald Trump has said on the campaign trail,” he said on the same show. “Some of his rhetoric, some of his policy, certainly some of his instincts on national security and foreign policy.”

But fortunately, Sullivan has another choice. “I plan on supporting the Republican nominee. At this time.”

Cotton concurred. “I’ve long said that I will support the Republican nominee because we can’t afford a third Obama-Clinton term.”

The Nominee of the Party sounds like a rational guy. Even House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., – who is “not ready” to support Trump – had compliments for the Nominee. “We hope that our nominee aspires to be Lincoln or Rea-

gan-esque,” Ryan observed.

Lincoln or Reagan-esque? Wow! What a high bar.

This “nominee” character sounds almost as good as that Never Trump fellow. (Whatever happened to him, by the way?)

“Senator McCain, we already know that you’re supporting Trump, but are you endorsing Trump?” the KTAR hosts asked.

“I’m supporting the nominee of the party,” McCain responded. “I’m telling you the answer and that is, I’m supporting our nominee.”

Given the choice of Donald Trump and the Nominee of the Republican Party, these senators would support the Nominee of the Party, hands down.

If they turn out to be the same person, this is going to be very uncomfortable.

The magazine Discovery Girls pitches itself as a publication that aims to help empower girls from ages 8 to 12.

Much of the time, judging by its website, it manages to do just that.

In the latest issue, however, the magazine offered to help its young readers discover their inner critics with a twopage illustrated spread on how to pick a swimsuit that best flatters their bodies.

For a girl who is “curvy on top,” the magazine advised, “Coverage is key!” and, “Side-ties draw the eyes downward.”

Message: Because you’re never too young to take responsibility for what your body might provoke in a male who can’t control himself.

If a girl is “straight up and down,” the magazine offers advice on how to create the illusion of curves.

Message: Look like the curvy girl we just told to hide all evidence of her developing body.

If a girl is “rounder in the middle,” she should wear “busy geometrics” that “draw the eye inward.”

Message: Camouflage, honey. Bigtime.

Because this is 2016, reaction from women was swift and outraged – so much so that publisher Catherine Lee posted a lengthy response on Facebook that never included an apology.

DEKALB – DeKalb freshman Mallory Warner’s walkoff single gave the Barbs a 2-1 victory over Kaneland on Thursday at Northern Illinois University’s Mary M. Bell Field.

“I was struggling in my previous at-bats,” Warner said. “Coach Scott Newport told me to let it (the pitch) get in deep. I did that and drove the ball past the first baseman. As soon as I saw it bounce over the first baseman’s glove, I knew we won. I have never had a game-winning hit until now. It felt really good.”

DeKalb’s Morgan Newport and Kaneland’s Courtney Davis were locked in a pitchers’ duel for most of the game. Newport pitched seven innings of one-hit ball with six strikeouts and no walks.

“My defense was as awesome as they usually are,” Morgan Newport said. “When they play like that, it makes me so much more comfortable on the mound.”

Earlier this week, Kaneland was dominated by DeKalb (19-6, 9-1 NI 12 Conference), by a final score of 14-1. Although it wasn’t the ideal result, Knights coach Mike Kuefler was happy with the vast improvement his team made.

“That kid (Morgan Newport) is an exceptional pitcher,” Kuefler said. “Looking for a good pitch early is important against a kind of talent like that. We tried hard to do just that, but we only got it done in one inning.

But, from going to where we were (Monday) to today, I am very happy with our performance.”

As DeKalb looks to the playoffs in two weeks, Barbs coach Jeff Davis said these are the kinds of games you can use to build resolve.

“These kinds of games can frustrate you,” Davis said. “I don’t know how many runners we left on base today, but you have to keep your composure and keep pecking away. If you can do that, eventually, you are going to hit a ball hard that finds a hole.”

The Barbs will be able to rest the remainder of the week. They will travel to Burlington to play the Rockets at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

By JESSE SEVERSON jseverson@shawmedia.com ROCHELLE – When they were growing up, Sycamore’s Alyssa Feuerbach and Genoa-Kingston’s Carly Fischer went to the same Sunday school at Salem Lutheran in Sycamore.

Now they’re ending their high school careers together at the Class 2A girls track and field state meet later this month.

The pair of seniors both qualified in the discus for their respective schools with automatic marks in their final throws of the day in the Class 2A Rochelle Sectional on a windy Thursday afternoon.

“Carly and I go way back,” Feuerbach said. “It’ll be fun going down to state with her. Her and I were in the same Sunday school class ever since kindergarten.”

Feuerbach placed third in the discus with a mark of 116 feet, 2 inches, and Fischer threw 117-1 for second place. Dixon’s Tayla Schwarz won the sectional with a throw of 120-7.

Kaneland cruised to its fourth consecutive sectional title, distancing itself with 115 points for first ahead of second-place Rockford Boylan Catholic (73.5). Genoa-Kingston took 11th place (18); Sycamore was 14th (11.5).

“We have good depth in the relays,” Kaneland coach Doug Ecker said. “We have a lot of good runners – and they’re good kids. They’ve worked hard and they’ve earned what they’ve done.”

The state meet is May 20 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

The Knights got a dominating performance Thursday from their relay teams, winning all four events.

The 4x800-meter relay team of junior Sarah Daley, senior Nicole Espino, senior Brianna Bower and junior Becca Richtman opened the day with a victory in 9 minutes, 48.81 seconds to open the running events. Shortly afterward, the 4x100 relay team of sophomore Shanya Hurston, senior Allie Heinzer, junior Carly Elliott and junior Nicole Sreenan won in 49.23.

The 4x200 relay team of sophomore Jamie Martens, senior Carly Bartholomew, Heinzer and Elliot won in 1:46.98. The 4x400 relay team of Sreenan, Bartholomew, Heinzer and Martens took first in 4:02.8.

The Knights also qualified in seven individual events.

Sreenan cruised to victories in the 100 dash (12.23) and the 400 (56.66), junior Maddie Keifer made it in the high jump (5-1, second place) and the triple jump (351/2, fifth place) and junior Sydney Davidson won the pole vault (10-1).

Also, Heinzer won the 200 (25.91), and Espino (2:20.71) and Richtman (2:22.65) took second and third in the 800 to both qualify for the state meet.

“We have just so many good runners at our school,” Sreenan said. “It’s not just one person that carries us.”

The meet featured a harsh wind running into the curve on the north side of the track. Although Sreenan’s time in the 400 on Thursday was slightly higher than her seeded mark of 56.26, she said she didn’t think about the looming wind while lining up for the race.

“I honestly just worried about it when I got to it,” Sreenan said. “It’s like worrying about questions at the end of the test instead of the one you’re on.”

Although Kaneland will take plenty to the state meet, it will be a return trip to Charleston for both Feuerbach and Fischer.

Feuerbach made it as a sophomore and a junior, and Fischer qualified as a sophomore. However, both of them had to earn their qualifying marks in their final three throws after not reaching them in the preliminary round.

“After not making it my junior year, it really motivated me to do it this year,” said Fischer, who dealt with a back injury a season ago. “It’s hard to make it. You know you can throw past [qualifying marks] all the time, but it

comes down to one meet where one throw can make it or break it.”

Both threw past the state qualifying mark of 112-2 on their first throw of the finals.

“It was definitely relief,” Feuerbach said of the emotion of getting the state mark. “I didn’t get it on my first three throws of prelims, so I went over and did shot put didn’t make it there – so I came back thinking, ‘These could be my last three throws ever, let’s just do it.’ The first one happened for me.

Huge relief.”

In the shot put, which held the preliminary and final rounds before the finals for the discus, Fischer was fourth at 36-9 and Feuerbach was fifth at 35-6.

For Sycamore coach Joe McCormick, the idea that the two long-time friends were able to enjoy the moment together made the day even sweeter.

“Especially the local connection – Sycamore and Genoa are so close,” he said. “It’s kind of nice having that camaraderie because throwers are usually way back and nobody’s paying attention to them. It’s nice to have that.”

The pair also scratched on their final throws of the day – Feuerbach wide to the left, Fischer wide to the right.

“I don’t know (what happened on the last throw), to be honest,” Fischer laughed.

Spartans complete 3-game sweep of Barbs

By EDDIE CARIFIO ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The Sycamore baseball team made DeKalb pay with two outs Thursday, while Jacob Cavanaugh kept the Barbs off-balance at the plate as the Spartans won, 10-4, to finish a three-game sweep of their Northern Illinois Big 12 East Division rivals.

Sycamore (17-10, 7-5 NI Big 12 East) scored four in the first two innings, all with two outs. Six of the Spartans’ first eight runs came with two down through the first four innings. The Barbs (10-14, 5-7) trailed 10-1 after five with Bryce Wheeler on the mound.

“That’s one of the things we focused on, one of the five areas – you’ve got to score with two outs,” Spartans coach Jason Cavanaugh said. “A lot of times pitchers think you’re out of it when you get to two outs, but there’s a third big out there, and I think we did a good job of driving Wheeler’s pitch count up.”

Wheeler struck out nine in four in-

nings, but also surrendered 13 hits. He gave up eight runs, all earned.

“It proves that when you throw the ball down low in the strike zone you’re going to get outs,” DeKalb coach Justin Keck said. “If you don’t, they’ll get hits.”

Jacob Cavanaugh pitched into the sixth for the Spartans, allowing three runs on four hits. He walked Connor Hoyle and allowed a Dani Garcia a single to start the sixth. Both came around to score on a single by Willis Brei and sacrifice fly by Alvaro Munos off Sycamore reliever James Marcinkowski.

Eric Nelson added a double with two outs to score Brei, but Tyler Maveus got the Barbs in order in the seventh.

“Aside from that last inning, when I got a little sloppy, my cutter was working well for me,” Jacob Cavanaugh said. “I trusted my defense and they helped me out back there.”

The Spartans finished with 17 hits, with at least one in every inning. Jacob Cavanaugh was the only starter without a hit. Jordan Wright was 3 for 4 and

scored twice, while Marcinkowski was 3 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Maveus had three hits, two RBIs and scored a run, while Zach Carlsen, Michael Beaudoin and Jarod Montavon each had two-hit days for Sycamore.

“It’s always a great sign – you have to put together teamwork and individual performances to beat these guys,” Jacob Cavanaugh said. “It’s always a team effort and a good challenge.”

The Spartans reeled off their sixth straight win and eighth in nine games since their previous conference series, a sweep by Kaneland two weeks ago.

“That did really set us up for this,” Jacob Cavanaugh said. “We had a couple rough practices at the end, and we really brought ourselves together with some hard practices.”

Jason Cavanaugh said it’s been good to see his team bounce back heading into the postseason, which starts May 25 against Burlington Central.

“That was as bad as we could possibly play, that week we had Kaneland,”

Jason Cavanaugh said. “It kind of extended – it was about a six- or seven-game span we just played badly all the time. We ended up getting a couple wins out of it, but we just played so poorly, to see us bounce back and get better ... . I said from Day 1, this team is going to be a lot better at the end of the season than we were at the beginning.”

The Barbs, on the other hand, will need a recovery of their own. They’re scheduled to play four games next week before starting their postseason May 23 at home against Rockford Jefferson. They’ve lost five straight and seven of eight overall.

“You have to start back over from scratch and go back to the basics and do what we have to do to get it right,” Keck said. “It’s a battle every day that you have to fight. How much better do you want to get and how content are you with what you are? If you’re content with what you are, this is what’s going to happen. If you want to work to get better, than you’ve got to do that.”

“It’s an outstanding group, plain and simple,” Hamilton said. “An awesome bunch of kids both on and off the field.

They have love for the game, they care about their teammates, they lead by example, and it’s a bittersweet moment for all of us. But it’s definitely a class that’s not done. We’ve got opportunities to reach some of the goals we made for ourselves early in the season.”

Morris (7-9-1, 0-7-1 NI Big 12 East) was down a few players during the match, including their starting goalkeeper and several defenders and midfielders.

“We called up some girls and gave them some playing time,” Morris coach Steven Rain said. “And they played really well. Two of the three goals came off corners, so we need to do a better job of defending that, but, otherwise, I was very pleased with the play of our team.”

The Barbs won with 87 points; Hononegah was second with 76.

Mata hurled a throw of 134 feet, 6 inches in the discus to break her own school record and claim the title.

Long won both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and was on the champion 4x200 relay team and won the 200 dash.

Jasmine Kemp qualified for state by clearing 5-5 in the high jump. The 4x100 relay team also qualified.

BASEBALL Kaneland loses late lead: The

Knights were up two heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but lost, 4-3, in eight innings at Yorkville.

Jake Marczuk was 3 for 3 for the

Knights, who outhit the Foxes, 9-5.

Will Ring had two hits for Kaneland.

Jacob Viollete went the distance in the loss, allowing two earned runs.

“He was pretty good tonight and we just need to play better defense behind him when he performs like that,” Knights coach Brian Aversa said.

“We made too many mistakes and we had chances to put the game away in the seventh and we didn’t, and then the errors extended the game.”

Huffman, Lucca power G-K: Brady Huffman struck out 12 in five innings as Genoa-Kingston beat Marengo, 9-2.

Tommy Lucca hit a grand slam, part of a seven-run second inning for the Cobs (10-15, 3-8 Big Northern Conference). Lucca was 4 for 4 with three runs scored. Tommy Hansen and Huffman each had two hits.

Indian Creek loses: The Timberwolves lost, 6-1, at home to Putnam County.

DeKALB – It was senior night Thursday, but it was DeKalb junior Hanna Hickey who came up big with a goal and two assists in the Barbs’ 3-0 win over Morris in the regular-season finale.

The Barbs (12-6-2, 3-5 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) played a solid first half and were able to keep a shorthanded Morris offensive attack flustered. Hickey scored in the seventh minute on a pass from senior Caitlyn Hottsmith to give the Barbs a 1-0 lead, a lead they would take into the halftime intermission.

When the Kent State softball team won a series against Northern Illinois earlier this season in DeKalb, Golden Flashes coach Eric Oakley said he was impressed with Huskies pitcher Alex Frenz and thought the two teams likely would meet again.

On Thursday, Oakley’s prophecy came true.

Only this time, Frenz threw a four-hitter to help lead the No. 4 Huskies to a 2-0 victory over the top-seeded Golden Flashes in the second round of the Mid-American Conference tournament at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio.

Frenz, the conference’s Freshman of the Year, only walked one and struck out another batter in the win.

“Between Emily’s clutch hit, Alex’s fantastic pitching and defensively – I thought Alaynie Woollard had a phenomenal game at third and Caitlyn made that catch over the fence – we just got it done today,”

NIU coach Christina Sutcliffe said.

“We knew coming here we needed to sharpen up the defense, and we certainly made the plays we needed to when they had runners in scoring position.”

The Huskies advance to play No. 2 Miami (Ohio) at 3:30 p.m. today. The teams didn’t meet in the regular season.

For the second straight game, the Huskies (35-18) got a two-run home run from senior catcher Emily Naegele, who smacked her 20th homer of the season after junior first baseman Kayti Grable drew a walk. She also hit a home run in the Huskies’ 3-1 win over No. 5 Western Michigan in the first round.

Naegele’s homer was only one of two hits for the Huskies against Kent State pitcher Ronnie Ladines, who threw a complete game for the Golden Flashes (36-21).

In the regular season, Kent State took the series against the Huskies, winning 7-5 in Game 2 and 4-3 in Game 3. Naegele did so much damage against the Golden Flashes during the first two games that Oakley walked her in all four at-bats in the third game.

On Thursday, Naegele walked twice and went 1 for 1 with the game-winning home run.

Menopause can cause vaginal pain Dear Dr. K: I’m in my late 50s. Lately, I have vaginal pain every time my husband and I have intercourse. I mentioned this to some friends, and it turns out a few of them also experienced vaginal pain, starting around menopause. What is causing this problem? And what can I do?

Dear Reader: If you’re in your late 50s, you probably have gone through menopause. At menopause, levels of the hormone estrogen plummet. This causes the vaginal lining to become thin and produce fewer lubricating secretions, resulting in dryness and irritation. The vagina becomes shorter and less elastic, and the vaginal opening narrows. All of these changes can make intercourse uncomfortable, painful or impossible.

A condition called pelvic floor hypertonus often develops around menopause in response to this vaginal pain. It causes the muscles surrounding the vagina to involuntarily tighten in response to any attempt at entry. It can make intercourse even more difficult.

There are things you can do to reduce your discomfort during sex, several of which require working with your doctor to obtain prescription medicines: • Use plenty of lubricant when you have intercourse. Also, consider regular use of long-acting vaginal moisturizers.

• If you are postmenopausal, consider low-dose vaginal estrogen therapy, which can help restore vaginal health. A new oral drug, ospemifene (Osphena), also may help with vaginal dryness and discomfort. It is supposed to stimulate the vagina (but not other organs) the way estrogen does.

• Consider steroid creams, which effectively treat vaginal inflammation.

• Try pelvic floor physical therapy. This technique uses hands-on physical therapy to relax muscles in the lower pelvis. It is

• Do Kegel exercises to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles.

• Apply an anesthetic gel in and around your vagina before intercourse. Ask your doctor for a prescription.

• Apply a frozen gel pack wrapped in a towel to your vulva to ease irritation after sexual activity.

• Rinse your vulva in cool water after sex.

• Use lubricated vaginal dilators regularly. These products consist of a set of plastic round-tipped cylinders that range in size.

The small cylinders have a diameter of about three-quarters of an inch. The large cylinders are the diameter of a fully erect penis.

Vaginal dilators can be used if your vagina tightens involuntarily during intercourse. They also are helpful if your vagina has become short or narrow over time. For many women, using dilators regularly for about five minutes every night can dramatically increase comfort with intercourse.

Pain with intercourse is something people don’t like to bring up with their doctors. I remember patients who had been having the problem for 10 to 20 years, but never mentioned it to me for the longest time. You may well be able to improve the problem with any of the above approaches that don’t require your doctor. If not, don’t hesitate to ask your doctor for help.

am the building manager of a high-rise office building. Every year, we perform a fire alarm test to determine all our fire alarm systems work properly. Employees in the building must evacuate in a timely manner.

Two years ago, a very overweight woman told me she had a heart condition and could not make it down the stairs during the drill. I told her to proceed to the stairwell, have one of her co-workers give me her location and in the event of a fire I’d send a fireman up to get her.

A year later, another obese woman told me she, too, couldn’t make it down the stairs. Word has gone out in the building. Now 10 other women have asked to be added to the “list” so they won’t have to descend the stairs.

I have nightmares about these women standing in stairwells waiting for firemen to help them during a real fire. I have a call in to my local fire chief to see what he/she thinks I should do. Have you any thoughts on this matter? – Worried Building Manager Dear Building Manager: I took your question to Austin, Texas, Fire Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr, president of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, and to Allan Fraser, senior building code specialist at the National Fire Protection Association. Both expressed concern you would create a “list,” because lists can become outof-date or misplaced and of no use when a fire occurs. People quit, get fired, go on vacation, are home sick, etc. on any given workday.

Often I find myself at a restaurant when it smells like it’s time to change the diaper.

Instead of running to the bathroom for a false alarm, I (and most parents I know) pull back the back of the diaper to check while we’re in the middle of the restaurant. Is this bad manners or considered practical behavior? – On The Scent

That is a good sentence for bridge players to remember. Especially when in a suit contract, after the dummy comes down, the declarer should pause and count up his potential losers. How many should South see in today’s deal? He is in four hearts, and West has led the club queen.

Well, let’s count them up. South has one in spades, one in hearts, one in diamonds and one in clubs -- one too many.

At this point, it is a good idea to count winners. (If an opponent complains that you are taking too long, tell him that he has just broken your train of thought and you will have to start all over again!) Here, declarer has one spade, four hearts, two diamonds and two clubs -- a total of nine. Hmm ... things are grim. What should South do?

North, counting three points for the singleton, was well worth his single heart raise.

The spade, heart and diamond losers are theoretically unavoidable.

Declarer must eliminate that club loser. After taking the first trick, he must lead a diamond, preferably a sneaky jack. If West is asleep and plays low, suddenly South can collect an overtrick. But let’s assume West wins with his ace and plays another club. Declarer takes the trick, discards dummy’s last club on the diamond king, and starts to draw trumps.

Eventually, he will ruff his club six on the board to eliminate his loser and to gain a fifth trump trick.
