City Manager Brian Gregory, with City Council approval, has managed Sycamore in a professional and tactful manner and has excelled in representing the city among various community boards and committees. Demolition begins at downtown Sycamore’s Jane Fargo Hotel

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Demolition of parts of the historical Jane Fargo Hotel began Wednesday, and will continue throughout the month as the building is transformed into an “upscale” apartment complex.

Pappas Development crews arrived about 7 a.m. Wednesday to begin knocking down the hotel’s northern banquet area. Demolition of the Reuben Ellwood Mansion, around which the hotel was built, will likely begin within the next two weeks, construction supervisor Ralph Crafton said.

Sycamore police warned motorists to be aware of increased truck traffic at the property at 355 W. State St., near the intersection of State and California Street, while the demolition work is underway. The remodeled apartment units are scheduled to be ready for occupancy

by October, Crafton said.

“We’re going to keep the historical aspect of it as a hotel,” he said, “even though we’ll only have one entry per apartment, so some of the doorways will be blocked off from the inside as we do the redecorating.”

Individual rooms will soon become 700-to1,100-square-footapartmentsuites.

Developer John Pappas’ vision includes transforming the hotel’s 39 rooms on the second and third floors into 12 one-bedroom and four two-bedroom residences.

The majority of the main floor is set to become an 8,500- square-feet of commercial space, while the current lobby area will serve as a TV and library room for tenants, city documents show.

Pappas told Sycamore City Council members in early May that no one with a credit score lower than 680 would be approved to live in the complex. Once utilities are factored in, the apartments could cost tenants anywhere between $800 to $1,100 a month, Crafton said.

“They’ll be nice, upscale, high quality ... single bedrooms as well as double bedrooms, with a lobby area maintaining the historic features it now possesses,” he said.

Pappas was not immediately available to comment.

Carpet, couches and chairs that previously furnished the hotel will be donated to Dan Stovall of Perpetual Amity Furnishings and Travel, where the items will be distributed among international students at Northern Illinois University, the University of Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology.

The hotel’s previous owner agreed in March to sell the property to Pappas, who plans to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars to renovate both the inside and outside of the building. After presenting his plans to the City Council, aldermen unanimously agreed May 2 to issue Pappas a one-time grant of $100,000 to help fund more than $400,000 of exterior work and demolition. Investment in the interior alone is expected to cost more than $1 million.

The grant will be paid using reserves in the city’s Sales Tax Distributive Fund, since the building is a mere block away from qualifying for tax increment financing assistance.

The property, which has changed hands four times in the past 10 years, has had trouble sustaining itself as a hotel, Mayor Ken Mundy has said. Any attempt to renovate and update the property’s oldest wings would be a “code nightmare,” and repurposing the building might be the city’s only reasonable way to preserve it, he said.

“It’s exciting. It’s critical. It’s an icon,” Mundy said. “It’s very important that building – that business – continue for us here. Living in residential apart-

ments is quite popular these days and many downtown areas are going to that kind of living and those kind of residences.”

Chamber publicly opposes school facility tax School officials in county divided on proposal that could fund infrastructure

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The city’s Chamber of Commerce has plans to speak out against a proposed school facility sales tax, for fear it would run businesses out of town and deter new businesses from setting up camp in Sycamore.

Sycamore School District 427 Superintendent Kathy Countryman announced at Tuesday’s board meeting that the chamber board has elected to take a public stance on the matter, which has recently proven a hot-button issue among school boards throughout the county.

“Our concern is the deterioration of our general economic environment and that this tax will stifle the growth

of our local economy,” Chamber Executive Director Rose Treml said.

The proposed tax would tack on 1 percentage point to DeKalb County’s sales tax rate, and could generate millions for schools’ capital improvements and bond payments.

If the tax is implemented, it could bring in about $15 million in annual revenue, to be split among the county’s school districts based on how many DeKalb County students attend school in each district, officials have said.

Leaders in DeKalb School District 428, which is facing a struggle to pay off building bond debt, have openly advocated for the tax increase.

Taxpayers in that district voted to borrow $108 million to build new school buildings in 2008. However, the repayment plan for those bonds expected robust property value growth that did not materialize.

As a result, the district could be forced either to restructure the debt – increasing the amount of time that homeowners must pay increased taxes by several years – or face the prospect of allowing the tax bill for an average homeowner to increase by hundreds of

dollars beginning in 2018.

But officials in Sycamore and at DeKalb County are concerned that increasing the sales tax will drive United and American Airlines’ fuel-buying subsidiary businesses out of Sycamore.

This would cost Sycamore’s city government hundreds of thousands more a year, while the county would lose $2.5 to $3 million in annual revenue.

The airlines buy their jet fuel through scarcely staffed offices in Sycamore to avoid paying the higher sales tax in Cook County. The Regional Transit Authority has sued the city and the airlines, claiming that the arrangement is a tax dodge.

Sycamore’s budget for the coming fiscal year projects the city will rebate $24.5 million to the two airlines, keeping about $913,000. The airlines, which have agreements with Sycamore that extend into at least the mid-2020s, already have threatened to pull the plug on their subsidiary offices in Sycamore if the tax question so much as appears on the ballot, county officials have said.

They also note that airline fuel revenues would constitute 40 percent of the

revenue the sales tax is estimated to bring in, meaning without it, the proposal would generate considerably less than the $15 million projected.

But Sycamore chamber members are concerned about the city’s smaller businesses, too, and fear local business owners might find the issue too polarizing to take an official stance on, Treml said.

“Obviously, yes. I’m concerned about the jet fuel, because that’s a big amount of money for the city of Sycamore and the county,” Treml said.

“But my job is to represent the other 500 businesses in the community, and I am concerned about the retailers. Any time you add additional tax to their bottom line it makes it hard on them.”

The chamber’s business advocacy committee is preparing an official statement to read at Monday’s City Council meeting and Wednesday’s County Board meeting.

“They’ve decided to make sure that people in the community understand what they’re going to be voting for, and in particular we want the businesses in the community to advocate on their behalf,” Treml said.

Charlee’s Angel Run to benefit Kishwaukee and IVCH hospitals DAILY CHRONICLE

The proceeds from this fundraiser will again benefit the U.S. Cuddle Cot Campaign Initiative. This year, the recipient hospitals are Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb and Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru.

Cuddle cots are cooling beds that can be placed in the hospital room of a parent who has lost a child to stillbirth or other birth complications early in life. This device allows parents and families the time to grieve their baby with dignity.

Last year, Charlee’s Angel Run raised more than $10,000. Funds were

used to purchase cuddle cots for Valley West Hospital in Sandwich, Rush-Copley Hospital in Aurora and Morris Hospital. The race was attended by more than 150 people and many businesses in Sandwich, DeKalb and surrounding communities donated to the silent auction.

The Kenyon family started this event in 2015 in memory of their daughter, Charlee Jean Kenyon, who was born still April 22, 2014.

This year’s race will begin at 8 a.m.

June 12 at the Sandwich Park District, 1001 N Latham St., Sandwich. In conjunction with the race, there will be a raffle of items donated by local businesses with raffle tickets costing $1.

Phylis M. Cunningham, 97, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at Oak Crest in DeKalb.

Born June 1, 1918, in Clare, the daughter of Walter and Carrie (Vesta ) Corey, Phylis married Orville J. Cunningham on Oct. 28, 1939, in Downers Grove.

She graduated from the DeKalb High School Class of 1936.

Phylis was employed by the Malta School District, and later, the DeKalb School District, from which she retired in 1980.

WARSAW, Poland – Gene Gutowski, a Polish-American Holocaust survivor who was the producer of three films by director Roman Polanski in the 1960s and reunited with him decades later for the Oscar-winning Holocaust drama, “The Pianist,” has died. He was 90.

Gutowski’s son, Adam Bardach, told The Associated Press that his father died of pneumonia on Tuesday at a hospital in Warsaw.

The Gutowski-Polanski collaboration in the 1960s resulted in the 1965 psychological horror film “Repulsion,” starring French actress Catherine Deneuve, followed by “Cul-de-Sac” (1966) and “The Fearless Vampire Killers” (1967), films that brought Polanski to Hollywood.

Years later Polanski credited Gutowski with launching his international career, calling him “one of the most important figures in my existence.”

Gutowski was the son of a cultured and assimilated Jewish family in eastern Poland but saw his youth shattered by World War II and the loss of his family in the Holocaust. Immediately after the war he worked for U.S. military intelligence hunting Nazis in postwar Germany, and emigrated to the United States in 1947.

A talented artist and sculptor, Gutowski worked as a fashion illustrator in New York before he took up film production. He led a jet-setting playboy lifestyle for many years that took him across Europe, to Hollywood and the Virgin Islands, with six wives and many lovers along the way, a life story he tells in a memoir, “With Balls and Chutzpah: A Story of Survival.”

For several years he also was a consultant to Saudi arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi. After the fall of communism in eastern Europe he returned to Poland, spending his latter years in Warsaw.

Gutowski and Polanski met in 1963, shortly after Polanski had made his breakthrough film, “Knife in the Water,” a Polish-language production that gained him acclaim and an Oscar nomination – but still no eager supporters for his next film.

At the time Polanski was 30 and lived in France, speaking no English.

Gutowski, who was living in London, was hugely impressed by the talent of his fellow Pole and persuaded him to go to London and make a film in English, pushing for something “shocking” that would test the limits of the censors. The result was “Repulsion.”

Nicklas to help Kish College’s community ties

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Kishwaukee College’s president has turned to an area stalwart to help the college evaluate its current business community connections, and possibly aid in forging new ones, officials said.

College trustees gave the nod at their meeting Tuesday to let President Laurie Borowicz bring William “Bill” Nicklas aboard as a special assistant for strategic partnerships.

According to terms of his part-time employment, Nicklas will start May 16 in a role that is scheduled to last only until November. Nicklas will be paid $35,000 for the six months of work.

“Strengthening our partnerships with the business community is es-

sential for the college, as well as our businesses and local communities, to continue moving forward,” Borowicz said. “Dr. Nicklas brings with him local connections, experience and knowledge necessary to achieve the set goals.”

Nicklas, 67, previously served as city manager of DeKalb and later of William Sycamore, held several Nicklas senior leadership roles at Northern Illinois University and owns his own consulting firm. He also played a major role with the DeKalb County Long Term Recovery Corp. that was set up to aid Fairdale after last year’s tornado.

“My job is to, first of all, assess where [the college’s] strengths and

needs may be. And do the same with some of [the college’s] existing external partners, and see where there are opportunities to expand ... the college’s reach,” Nicklaus said.

He said he would report his findings and other results from his work to Borowicz at the Laurie end of the six months.

Borowicz His hire comes two months after Kishwaukee College let go 24 workers in an austerity move to save $1 million.

Additionally, college officials said that another $1.1 million would be saved by not filling other vacancies.

“While we had to make difficult decisions regarding our reduction in staff, we have maintained that it is crit-

ical for the college to continue to move forward to achieve its mission and serve its local communities,” Borowicz said.

Although some posts at the college will remain vacant, the board approved filling several others. Beth Young was chosen to fill the chief financial role, after Robert Galick’s departure in February.

Elena Lineberry will relocate here from Hastings, Nebraska, to teach biology starting in August. She replaces Tatyana Beaves, who took a job elsewhere.

Chase Budziak will be the interim dean of math, science and business for at least the coming school year, starting June 6. His annual salary will grow from $47,433 to $80,000, according to data from the college.

HINCKLEY – Months after village trustees rejected a revised annexation plan that for the proposed Royal Estates subdivision – that would have brought revenue to the town and local school districts – the developer has announced that lots are for sale.

“I think the [housing] market is coming back,” said Stephan Phillips, part owner of Libertyville-based Lake County Grading.

The company has erected a for sale sign at the 43-acre site on Miller Road in Hinckley where up to 80 single family homes may be built. Phillips said LCG is testing demand for housing in the rural town that has just more than 2,000 residents.

Phillips said LCG is looking to build ranch and two-story homes sized between 1,600 to 2,200 square feet. There would be a mix of three-bedroom homes with 11⁄2 or 2 baths, priced up to about $175,000. He said lots near the lake would be priced at a premium.

The development would be a departure from the mix of single- and multifamily housing that had been proposed last year as part of a proposed revision of the 20-year annexation agreement for the land with the village of Hinckley. It was allowed to expire in November.

According to Village Attorney Laura Julien, the land is still incorporated with Hinckley but with the annexation agreement expired, Lake County Grading no longer has special concessions for building the homes and would now have to abide by the standing village ordinances. “[The land has] already been annexed into the village, so it just would be treated as any other property would

Roderick said the town could still charge an impact fee, but based on the current formula for figuring out what it would be, the amount would not be as high as with the annexation agreement.

And, he said, the funds would be restricted to use toward a school building fund.

“We don’t need a building. We have a big enough school,” said Roderick.

Trustees such as Jeff Nier who had qualms about the development last fall, are now concerned about who LCG would have construct the homes.

Phillips previously told the Daily Chronicle that he didn’t want to disclose the builder’s name because the two didn’t have a contract in place.

He could not be immediately reached Wednesday to determine further developments.

Nier said that is part of his continued reservations about LCG and the subdivision.

“I think if he was an honest developer and a good developer, he would have come back with an annexation agreement, one that fit what the village wanted and fit his marketing needs,” said Nier, who was not in favor of the previous agreements.

The seventh-graders, who are members of the middle school’s ambassador program, met twice a month for five months researching tobacco use and its health risks, school counselor Jennifer Gammelgaard said.

Their research was done in conjunction with members of the DeKalb County Health Department and Reality Illinois, a grant program of the Illinois Department of Public Health that allows young people to work with local government to change public policy on tobacco.

Students who participated included Elijah Bobo, Ella Boyer, Owen Brown, Hanna Foust, Tucker Ikens, Ashanty Kitanga, Elliot Lange, Rainan Lowry, Rachel Maxwell, Gaelle Moevi, Tyler Norton, Brett Paeglow, Esha Patel, Jakyla Rogers, Ashley Villalpando and Francis Zaylik.

Senate campaign targets veteran’s record

CHICAGO – Rep. Tammy Duckworth lost both legs when her helicopter was shot down in Iraq, then went on to hold leadership roles in the Illinois and U.S. Veterans Affairs departments.

Yet, the Democratic Senate hopeful now finds her record on helping military veterans under attack by her opponent, Republican Sen. Mark Kirk, as he tries to hold on to a seat Democrats believe is key to their efforts to regain the Senate majority.

Kirk, one of the GOP’s most endangered incumbents, has accused Duckworth of failing to protect veterans in her care and putting her political ambitions ahead of her duties. He’s also touted the more than two decades he served in the Navy Reserve and his own high-profile efforts to highlight problems at the VA. This week his campaign launched an online ad featuring a hearing on a lawsuit two Illinois VA employees filed against Duckworth, accusing her of retaliating against them when she led the agency – complaints that have twice been dismissed. CHICAGO – Customs officials seized nearly 70 pounds of opium from three Minnesota women arriving at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on a flight from Southeast Asia.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said the three women arrived at about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday on a flight from Laos, via Japan. Officers found 470 packets of opium concealed in bags of tea leaves and packed inside the women’s luggage.

Garrett Anderson, who lost part of one arm and suffered traumatic brain injury in a roadside-bomb attack in Iraq, said Duckworth was the first service member the U.S. Army sniper spoke to when he woke up from a coma at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in 2005.

The 39-year-old University of Illinois graduate student plans to vote for Kirk this fall for a simple reason: Anderson is a Republican. But he said the ads targeting her are out of bounds and called Duckworth “a nice person” who has a strong track record of look-

ing out for veterans.

“I’ve seen a few of (the ads) and I don’t like them because she served her country very well, and she’s a decorated war veteran,” Anderson said.

Kirk’s campaign said Duckworth’s record is a legitimate area for criticism, and that there’s no shortage of people who agree.

They point to two employees at Edward Rep. Tammy Hines Jr. VA Hospital Duckworth near Chicago who said they took their concerns to Duckworth and other Democrats but heard nothing, and to an Illinois Auditor General report of the state Department of Veterans’ Affairs that found inadequate financial controls and programs that were supposed to be implemented but weren’t during the time Duckworth was leading the office.

“Of course Duckworth is a war hero, and that’s what makes this entire court case even more tragic,” said Kirk campaign manager Kevin Artl.

“These VA employees only wanted to prevent veterans from being abused, but instead were ignored and punished by Duckworth while American heroes suffered.”

Deputy campaign manager Matt McGrath called it “a cynical and desperate ploy.” He said Duckworth gets most of her own health care at Hines and is “deeply familiar” with issues at VA medical centers.

Duckworth was born in Thailand to a Chinese mother and an American father, who fought with the Marines in Vietnam.

She joined ROTC during graduate school and later signed up with the Illinois National Guard. She was co-piloting a Black Hawk in 2004 when Iraqi insurgents hit it with a rocket-propelled grenade.

Among her accomplishments, her campaign says, is launching the first 24-hour hotline for suicidal veterans and introducing legislation to improve mental health treatment that was signed by President Barack Obama.

Judge allows Facebook lawsuit to proceed

CHICAGO – A federal judge in California has ruled that three Illinois men can proceed with their class-action lawsuit challenging Facebook’s facial recognition software used to identify people in uploaded photos.

Adam Pezen, Carlo Licata and Nimesh Patel, all of the Chicago area, separately sued the social media giant last year, the Chicago Tribune reported. The cases were combined and transferred last summer to the Northern District of California court.

The men allege that Facebook was illegally collecting biometric data from people “tagged” in photos posted by other users and that its use of facial recognition software violates Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act. CHICAGO – Chicago police said a man was taken to a hospital in critical condition after he fled authorities and jumped from an upper-level terminal at O’Hare International Airport.

Police said the incident happened about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. WMAQ-TV reported that Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the man was fleeing officers who tried to place him in custody for a disturbance at a terminal counter.

Doctor gives up license over cancer drug imports

CHICAGO – An Illinois doctor has permanently relinquished her medical license for allegedly putting patients at risk by giving them cheap, imported cancer drugs in violation of federal law.

Ann Kinnealey of Evanston formally gave up her license April 21 in an agreement with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

She waived her right to a hearing. Kinnealey’s attorney Edward Bruno said he would not comment about the matter.

Kinnealey is accused of buying nearly $1 million worth of misbranded drugs over four years from Canada-based Quality Specialty Products. Regulators are not claiming any patients were harmed.

The Illinois action came after a criminal investigation of Kinnealey by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Kinnealey agreed to pay approximately $129,000 in restitution to defer prosecution in that case.

Meanwhile, more Republican voters appear to be moving behind Trump, despite big-name holdouts such as Ryan, both former president Bushes and the party’s 2012 nominee, Mitt Romney.

Almost two in three Republican-leaning voters now view Trump favorably, compared to 31 percent who view him unfavorably, according to a national Gallup Poll taken last week. The numbers represent a near reversal from Gallup’s survey in early March.

“Despite the contentious primary process, the party is healing itself and scabbing over,” Republican pollster Greg Strimple said.

Ryan insisted Wednesday that Republican Party unity is paramount, even if he’s not yet willing to endorse the GOP’s presumptive presidential nominee.

“What we’re trying to do is be as constructive as possible and have a real unification,” Ryan said at a Capitol Hill news conference.

“We have to be at full strength to win this election.”

Trump is to meet with Republican leaders Thursday morning at the Republican National Committee headquarters. The private meetings represent his first tangible steps toward repairing his strained relationships with the nation’s most powerful elected Republicans.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. tried repeatedly to deport Jean Jacques, an immigrant living in the U.S. illegally, but his native Haiti wouldn’t take him back after he served more than a decade in a state prison for attempted murder and committed multiple parole violations.

Each time Jacques was arrested on a parole violation, he would serve a sentence in state prison and then be released to immigration custody. At least three times, Haiti refused to take him back, so Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials in early 2015 did the same thing they do thousands of times a year – they released a violent criminal immigrant from jail.

Six months later, Jacques killed Casey Chadwick, a young Norwich, Connecticut, woman. He was convicted of murder last April and faces sentencing this summer.

Jacques is a textbook example of the kind of immigrant living in the U.S. illegally that the Obama administration says should be returned to his home country.

But that’s easier said than done.

Jacques’ release and that of more than 19,700 convicted criminal immigrants during the 2015 budget year reveal yet another complication in the country’s complicated immigration sys-

tem. ICE has released tens of thousands of convicted criminals. Combined, those people have been convicted of hundreds of thousands of crimes, including murder and sexual assault.

Jacques’ case and those of others like him show how difficult it would be to carry out proposals by some politicians, including presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, that immigration officials simply find and deport the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the country illegally.

ICE Director Sarah Saldana told Congress recently that agents routinely have little choice but to release immigrants.

Saldana said the agency is bound by a complex set of immigration laws and rules that govern which immigrants have to be detained and which ones can be set free while they wait for an immigration judge to rule on their case. Add to the mix a years-long immigration court backlog of nearly half a million cases and some criminal immigrants could be free in the U.S. for years before being ordered out of the country.

“What is unacceptable is even one (release). Why did you release even one person?” Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, asked Saldana.

Saldana also told lawmakers that an effort to develop a system to alert local authorities about a newly released criminal immigrant is underway.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – As federal charges were filed against a white former South Carolina police officer who already faced a state murder charge in the shooting death of unarmed black motorist Walter Scott, Scott’s lawyer and family praised the federal prosecutors for pressing the case.

“I think the Justice Department is tired of sitting on the sidelines and they think this is one they can definitely win and send a message to police departments around the country,” attorney Chris Stewart told The Michael Associated Press.

A f e d e r a l i n - Slager dictment unsealed Wednesday charges Michael Slager, 34, with depriving Scott of his civil rights.

During a hearing Wednesday, federal Magistrate Judge Bristow Marchant agreed that Slager could remain free on the bond he has already posted in state court.

The federal indictment unsealed a few hours earlier also charges Slager with obstruction of justice and unlawful use of a weapon during the commission of a crime in the death of 50-year-old Scott.

Slager, who wore a dark suit and was handcuffed, entered a notguilty plea during the brief hearing.

Although he doesn’t have to put up any additional bond on the federal charges, Slager must surrender his

passport and have GPS monitoring.

A bystander’s cellphone video captured images of Slager, then a North Charleston police officer, firing eight times as Scott ran from a traffic stop in April 2015. The case inflamed a national debate about how blacks are treated by white police officers.

The federal indictment charges that Slager, while acting as a law officer, deprived Scott of his civil rights. A second count says he used a weapon, a Glock Model 21 .45-caliber pistol, while doing so.

The third count, charging obstruction of justice, alleges that Slager intentionally misled state investigators about what happened during the encounter with Scott.

“Specifically, defendant Michael Slager knowingly misled ... investigators by falsely stating that he fired his weapon at Scott while Scott was coming forward at him with a Taser,” the indictment reads. “In truth and in fact, as defendant Michael Slager then well knew, he repeatedly fired his weapon at Scott when Scott was running away from him.”

Conviction on all the charges could net Slager a life sentence plus 30 years and a $750,000 fine. The civil rights charge can carry the death penalty, because Scott lost his life, but Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Klumb said the government is seeking a maximum of life because there are no aggravating circumstances in the case.

Stewart, who represents the Scott family, called it amazing that the federal government has decided to indict an officer.

He told the psychologists he did not want to be declared incompetent because it would mean “forced medication.”

The Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo, where Dear will be sent, can force people to take medication over their objections. His treatment will likely include a mix of psychotropic drugs and therapy to treat his disorder, as well as education about the proceedings against him.

Restoring Dear to competency could take months or longer. But the overwhelming majority of defendants initially determined to be incompetent are eventually able to understand the proceedings and stand trial, said Steven Pitt, a forensic psychiatrist who has conducted competency exams but is not involved in Dear’s case.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A man who acknowledged killing three people at a Colorado Planned Parenthood clinic is mentally incompetent to continue with his criminal case, a judge ruled Wednesday, stalling the proceedings and potentially setting the stage for a mental health defense.

The decision by Judge Gilbert Martinez puts the case against Robert Dear, 57, on hold until treatment restores his ability to understand the proceedings and assist in his defense.

He will be sent to the state psychiatric hospital, and his mental health will be reviewed in August.

Two psychologists have found he has a delusion disorder, which they said keeps him from trusting almost anyone, including his lawyers. Martinez agreed with their findings, writing in his order that Dear’s “perceptions and understanding are not rational and are not grounded in reality.”

As he was led out of the courtroom,

Dear yelled at the judge: “That’s called prejudiced! Prejudiced! Filthy animal!”

Dear is charged with 179 counts, including murder and attempted murder, stemming from the Nov. 27 shooting at the Colorado Springs clinic that also left nine injured.

During previous courtroom outbursts, he has declared himself a “warrior for the babies” and said he was guilty. He told investigators he attacked the clinic because he was upset with the reproductive health organization for “the selling of baby parts.”

Martinez ordered the competency exam in December after Dear announced that he wanted to fire his public defenders and represent himself.

Two psychologists who interviewed Dear testified that they agreed he is not competent and that his delusion disorder makes him believe the FBI is persecuting him.

Bombings kill 93 in Iraqi capital

BAGHDAD – In the deadliest violence in Baghdad this year, three car bombs claimed by the Islamic State group killed 93 people across the Iraqi capital Wednesday, demonstrating the extremists’ ability to mount significant attacks despite major battlefield losses.

The separate bombings, which also wounded 165 people, came at a time of turmoil and deadlock in Iraq’s government and parliament. The Interior Ministry blamed the attacks on “political bickering” that is increasingly threatening the security of the civilian population.

The largest car bomb ripped through a crowded outdoor market selling food, clothing and household goods in the predominantly Shiite neighborhood of Sadr City during the morning, killing at least 63 people and wounding 85.

Streets were stained with blood, building facades were heavily damaged and smoke billowed from stores gutted by the blast.

Two more car bombs exploded elsewhere in the afternoon, killing at least 30 and wounded 80, police officials said. One bomb targeted a police station in the northwestern Kadhimiyah neighborhood, while another struck in the northern neighborhood of Jamiya.

The casualty figures were released by medical officials who all spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters.

In online statements, the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the bombings, which were condemned

by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, as well as the United States.

The IS group said it had targeted Shiite militiamen, but hospital and security officials said the vast majority of the victims were civilians. The AP could not immediately verify the authenticity of the IS claims, but they appeared on a website commonly used by the Sunni extremists.

“These attacks demonstrate that terrorists carry out these abominable attacks without regard to innocent civilian life in order to stoke tensions between these communities even further,” said White House spokesman Josh Earnest.

A decline of crime in DeKalb It’s good news: DeKalb saw a 7 percent decline in reported crime in 2015.

Yet as another year brings another decline in crime, many in the public continue to hold the view that the town has a crime problem.

According to the DeKalb police’s annual report, 2015 saw a total of 7,913 reported crimes overall, 7 percent less than in 2014, a year that itself marked a 10-year low in crime. That’s a statistically significant decline that continues a positive trend. The image-conscious in DeKalb might wonder, what else has to happen to erase this perception among the public that safety is an issue in the city?

It took years for DeKalb to create the public perception that crime was an issue in DeKalb, and that perception might take years to erase. The other problem for authorities to address is that while crime in general might be on the decline, some types of crimes became more prevalent in 2015.

One type of crime that occurred more often was robbery. Statistics from DeKalb police show that there were 29 robberies in 2015, more than double the 13 robberies that occurred in 2014. Also on the rise were incidents involving deadly weapons, which more than doubled to 59 in 2015.

While property crimes and vandalism and the like can be a nuisance, being the victim of a robbery is often an up-closeand-personal thing. The idea that a person could be at risk of being mugged if they wander into the wrong area at night does affect how people feel about their security.

So too does that idea that more people are armed and up to no good.

It’s important that people keep in perspective how much crime there truly is in DeKalb. Most people are at no greater risk of being a crime victim in DeKalb than they are in any other place. Crime can’t be completely eliminated or prevented, especially not in a city the size of DeKalb, which includes a sizable student population as well as. But we can keep working to reduce and minimize it in order to make citizens feel safer.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Bernie Sanders is no communist

To the Editor: Regarding Ted McCarron’s letter to the Editor of May 5 (“Trump as nominee boggles the mind,” page 18) While Mr. McCarron is passionate in his criticisms of Donald Trump, he shows a complete inability to comprehend historic “isms.” The Democratic Socialism platform is not even close to the rigidity of Stalin’s Communism.

The following partial list should direct some light on historical systems: Marxism, Stalinism, Trotskyism, Christian socialism, national socialism of Germany (Nazi Party), democratic socialism, liberal socialism, utopian socialism, social democracy, libertarian socialism, Arab socialism, and others.

In no conceivable way does Bernie Sanders’ democratic socialism automatically translate into “communism.”

The distinct differences among the systems listed here are not hard to find. I leave it to Mr. McCarron to do better research.

Deregulate sale of organs to help all

To the Editor: In the article “DeKalb High School teen receives heart transplant,” (page 3, May 7) the author tells the story of how this teenager received a heart transplant.

This story is a miracle because he was lucky enough to receive the transplant before government regulation took away his health.

Government regulation causes many unforeseen costs,

such as the deaths of thousands of people waiting on a transplant list.

These deaths happen because the government regulates the sale of human organs, so this teen had to wait on a list before being selected.

If the government did not regulate the sale of organs, this young man could have had a new heart as soon as doctors found the problem when he was younger. His family would have not had to suffer from the pain of worrying for their young son.

It is not a happy topic, but we all will die someday. There are millions of deaths each day, why could one of these hearts that are not needed anymore not be sold to this poor boy’s family.

The price would have been cheaper than having to wait 17 years for a new heart. The price would be low because competition would drive the price down. The free market is a wonderful device that has created vast wealth, it could create wealth for the millions of people that live the way this family and boy have for 17 years.

The sale of a deceased person’s organs could help pay for their burial, or help the children of the deceased go to college.

The market is a magical thing, and so is new life. We should call for the deregulation of the sale of human organs.

The freedom to buy and sell is a principle freedom that this country was founded on.

We should not deny this freedom to a willing seller who does not use these organs anymore, and to a patient struggling to stay alive.

Some employers can adjust work schedules with relative ease, but others may need to trim services or increase prices to cover costs.

Yet, employers offering jobs with unpredictable hours may have no choice but increase their budgets dedicated to salaries. The National Retail Federation estimates more than 2 million retail employees will be affected, increasing costs by $745 million for retailers. Any other employer with staff members providing services at all hours of the day will likely see similar effects.

We know the change will impact the newspaper industry, where salaried staff frequently exceed eight-hour shifts on busy days. The Newspaper Association of America predicts the change will add $130 million a year to national newspaper payrolls.

At the same time, we understand the need for change. Expecting employees to work an undefined number

of hours beyond a standard workweek for a $23,660 annual salary is indefensible.

Employers, however, can’t afford to reach the proposed goal in a single leap. Drastic increases will spur employment shifts, salary cuts or reduced benefits to maintain expenses, all of which could hinder employee-employer relationships.

Salaried status doesn’t only benefit employers. Salaried employees aren’t required to keep a complete accounting of their hours, and they can have flexible schedules, with the ability to take a portion of a workday off without being docked vacation time. All of that goes away if they are converted to hourly employees.

The need for such adjustments could be minimized by gradually increasing the threshold.

Already, reports indicate the proposed $50,660 threshold may be lowered to $47,000.

However, we believe an adjustment

also should consider regional differences. Federal rules should consider how a dollar’s spending power changes throughout the nation.

An income considered a living wage in the Midwest can be drastically lower when compared to buying power elsewhere. For a family of four with two working parents, MIT calculates a living wage to be $15.33 in Olmsted County, Minnesota, while the same estimate put the needed wage at $16.02 in Los Angeles, $18.93 in New York City and $20.27 in Washington, D.C. The benefits of a given salary aren’t equal throughout the nation, so it’s hard to understand why the federal threshold should see an equally drastic increase in all states.

As the Department of Labor needs to tweak its new rules, it’s time to take a step back and look for ways to spur gradual increases, rather than sudden changes that put businesses and employees on a path toward uncertainty.

Clinton’s weakness is Trump’s only hope for victory There are two ways that Donald Trump can become president. Either he must become significantly more popular among general-election voters. Or his likely opponent, Hillary Clinton, must become significantly more unpopular. It won’t take long for Trump to figure out which is the more promising path.

Right now, flush with optimism after a stunning victory over more than a dozen primary foes, Trump’s campaign has both goals in sight. Trump is hoping to rally conservatives and independents behind his candidacy.

In his victory speech after the Indiana primary last week, Trump magnanimously refrained from calling defeated Sen. Ted Cruz a liar, or implying that Cruz’s father aided the assassination of an American president. It was a veritable charm offensive.

Yet there are stark limits to Trump’s appeal. His genuine political talent is utterly divorced from anything resembling wisdom. He remains offensive to multiple blocs of voters and ignorant of public policy.

His unfavorable ratings – especially the number of Americans who hold a “strongly unfavorable” view of him – are, as Harry Enten of fivethirtyeight. com wrote, from “another planet.”

In polling from late March through late April, Enten reported, Trump’s aggregate “strongly unfavorable” fig-

The one relatively warm spot for Trump in a chilly electorate is Clinton. She, too, is unpopular. Add her strongly favorable rating to her strongly unfavorable, and Clinton nets about minus 20. It’s not otherworldly as is Trump’s. But it’s bad.

The question for Trump, then, is how to exploit her weakness.

Clinton has been subjected to a quarter century of political and personal attacks, many of them vicious, more than a few outlandish. For every smear of President Barack Obama as a Kenyan anticolonial socialist or terrorist enabler, Clinton can probably cite two similarly inspired delusions – that she killed White House aide

Vincent Foster or, for reasons no one ever seems able to explain, that she preferred to let a handful of Americans die in Benghazi rather than use her powers as secretary of state to protect them. But the differences between Obama and Clinton are at least as telling as the similarities. More than half of Americans consistently have rated Obama “honest and trustworthy” during his presidency. Of nine Gallup measurements taken between 2008 and 2015, Obama fell below 50 percent only once, in 2014. In April 2008, the spring of his first campaign for president, 60 percent of Gallup respondents said Obama was honest and trustworthy.

By contrast, in a March 2016 Washington Post/ABC News poll, 37 percent of adults agreed that Hillary Clinton is honest and trustworthy, and 57 percent said they don’t think she is. Even Democrats aren’t sold. In Wisconsin, where Bernie Sanders defeated her April 5, exit polls showed only 57 percent of Democratic voters rated her honest and trustworthy. Two weeks later in her home state of New York, which she won, only 60 percent of Democrats leaving the polls said she was honest and trustworthy.

Neither Sanders in 2016, nor Obama in 2008, aggressively attacked Clinton’s integrity. She finds herself in this hole as a result of conservative attacks on her and of doubts she

raised by her own actions. History weighs on her.

The vast right-wing conspiracy against the Clintons is no dark fantasy. For more than two decades, it has been a concrete blot on the political landscape. Her resort to private email was in all likelihood an effort to dodge those prying partisan eyes. Avoiding one trap, she entered another.

At Clinton’s landmark April 1994 White House news conference on Whitewater and “Hillarycare” and cattle futures and whatever else fit the catch-all portfolio of this path-breaking first lady, a reporter asked, “Is there a fundamental distrust of the Clintons in America?”

The question, 22 years later, is still live. Trump is unlikely to gain traction against Clinton arguing about experience or temperament or preparedness or ideas. She overwhelms him on every count. Given his voluminous record of falsehoods, breathtaking at the presidential level of politics, he probably can’t win a contest on integrity either. But Trump is a very successful bully. He intuitively understands weakness. He will find a way to hurt her.

A proposed federal rule change could have employers writing bigger paychecks or cutting hours.

A potential Fair Labor Standards Act revision would increase the threshold for salaried employees – those not eligible for overtime pay – from $23,660 a year to $50,440, a 113 percent increase.

On the surface, the Department of Labor change appears to be a boon for millions of employees by either raising salaries or reducing hours.

However, the potential ramifications of such a steep and sudden increase leave uncertainty.

“There are a whole lot of questions that have come forward,” said Randy Johnson, executive director of Workforce Development, noting the goal of the change hasn’t been properly defined.

The potential impact is being detailed, however. Federal estimates predict it will cost the nation’s employers up to $255.3 million in direct costs and

SYCAMORE – In a competitive showing by rival teams, the Sycamore girls soccer team got goals from three different players for a 3-0 victory over DeKalb on Wednesday.

While the lopsided score may indicate otherwise, both teams battled throughout the game, with Sycamore (18-2-1 overall) finding more opportunities at the net. Sycamore coach David Lichamer said he was proud of the way his team handled the pressure initiated by DeKalb.

“I thought it was a very wellplayed matchup on both sides of the ball,” Lichamer said. “DeKalb came out and played a very strong game by getting up the field nicely with players behind the ball. On the other side, I think we handled the pressure well. The defensive line certainly held and we did a nice job moving the ball forward. We certainly had some chances that we couldn’t quite put away in the first half but those balls went in for us in the second half.”

The Spartans opened up the scoring early in the first half after Taylor Meier found the back of the net in the fifth minute of the game. The score remained 1-0 until the 23rd minute of the second half, when Saydie Holland increased Sycamore’s lead with a goal. Callahan Carl put the Barbs away for good after her goal with less than five minutes to go in the game to make it 3-0 in favor of the home team.

DeKalb (11-6-2 overall) had only two shots on goal in the game, but coach PJ Hamilton gives most of the credit to the way Sycamore came out and played.

“I thought we came out and played a much better second half,” Hamilton said. “I’m proud of the effort and the mentality and the biggest thing we need to take away is not the scoreboard or the result but we had our opportunities against a really good team; our conference champions and the number one seed in our region.

At the end of the day we’re pleased with what we’ve created and it’s about the bigger picture and not today’s result.”

After finishing such a strong regular season, Lichamer has a team that gives him plenty to be confident about heading into regionals next week.

“We’re healthy, we’re strong, great unity and communication amongst each other,” Lichamer said.

“Beyond all the intangibles we have some skilled players. We can handle

Beaudoin only needs 50 pitches in 1-hitter

jseverson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Michael Beaudoin didn’t spend much time on the mound in his one-hitter for the Sycamore baseball team Wednesday.

The Spartans senior starting pitcher was incredibly efficient and the defense played a nearly perfect game behind him in their 10-0 win over rival DeKalb in five innings at Sycamore Park.

Beaudoin allowed an infield single to DeKalb’s Nate Sisler and two walks and only threw 50 pitches.

“It’s not a coincidence that we played great defense today,” Sycamore coach Jason Cavanaugh said.

“We made a play at third, six or seven at short, three more at second, one at first – you play good defense when your pitcher comes out and throws strikes.”

The Spartans starter only had one strikeout – the first batter of the game – and retired nine of the first 12 DeKalb batters in at-bats that were either one or two pitches.

“I came in after the first inning and said, ‘Coach, what am I at? Twenty pitches or something?’ He said, ‘No, you have 10,’ ” Beaudoin said.

“I was thinking, ‘Wow, that’s different.’ Definitely not the answer I was expecting.”

Beaudoin got plenty of help offensively from the Spartans, particularly in a five-run first inning.

Sophomore Zach Carlsen was 4 for 4 with three RBIs, including the game-ending two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning to put the Spartans (16-10 overall, 6-5 in Northern Illinois Big 12 East) ahead 10-0.

Beaudoin also had a two-run double in the first inning and Jack Mizgalski and James Marcinkowski each had two hits.

“Great day (by Carlsen), he had four hits today,” Cavanaugh said of Carlsen. “I liked his aggressiveness more than anything. He’s always been the kid who takes pitches. ...

Now he’s growing up, and two at-bats today he lined the first pitch into left field.”

For the Barbs, who fell to 10-13 overall and 5-6 in the NI Big 12 East, it’s the second consecutive game

against the Spartans that they struggled to hit and allowed Sycamore to jump out to an early lead.

In the Spartans’ 9-1 win in six innings Monday, Mizgalski threw a two-hitter and Sycamore scored two in the first.

“I know the kids are working hard and they’re trying, but the kids get frustrated,” DeKalb coach Justin Keck said. “Obviously, they’re here to compete and they’re here to win, and anytime those opportunities get taken away, it makes it challenging.

They get a little frustrated, but you have to keep it positive and understand that tomorrow is a new day.”

DeKalb had plenty of contact Wednesday, Keck said, it just went directly at the Sycamore defense, which only made one error. The Barbs attacking one or two pitches into the at-bat against Beaudoin wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, Keck said.

“You don’t want to harness back the aggression and then all of a sudden we just dug you in a hole and you have to fight your way out of it,” Keck said. “You don’t want to live like that. ... A lot of the things we hit today were right at people. They did make some nice plays, you tip your hat to them.”

Beaudoin didn’t throw more than four pitches in an at-bat to a DeKalb batter until there were two outs in the top of the fourth.

In the Spartans’ previous conference series, they were swept by Kaneland – including a pair of lopsided losses. However, now they are riding a four-game winning streak into the final game of the series against the Barbs, which is set for 4:30 p.m. today at DeKalb.

“I know we’ve worked harder and harder and we’re just a different ballclub,” Carlsen said. “We’re much better now.”

The baseball postseason brackets also were released by the IHSA on Wednesday afternoon.

The Barbs will be the No. 6 seed in the Class 4A Belvidere North Regional, in which they will host No. 10 Rockford Jefferson at 4:30 p.m. May 23 in the first round.

The Spartans are the No. 4 seed in the Class 3A Sycamore Regional, hosting No. 6 Mendota at 6 p.m. May 25.

Kaneland grads doing big things in college track

North Central freshman pole vaulter Dylan Kuipers posted a personal best of 17 feet, 71/4 inches at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin meet Saturday on the campus of Augustana in Rock Island.

The Kaneland grad’s vault was good enough for second place, behind teammate Luke Winder and two places in front of teammate Spencer LaHaye.

North Central put four vaulters in the top 10 and earned 24 team points as the Cardinals finished in second place at the conference meet, 3.5 points behind host Augustana. North Central’s final two regularseason meets are at home today and May 18.

Saturday in Chicago Heights. The sophomore was 4 for 4 with a double, three runs and two RBIs. Kishwaukee won the Arrowhead Conference title and has won two straight games via the mercy rule. The Kougars have a Region IV regional game at 4 p.m. today at home against South Suburban.

Genoa-Kingston grad Jacob Langford continued to swing a hot bat as the Pioneers took two of three from Lawrence over the weekend. Coming into the Mid-American Conference Tournament having lost five out of their final six games, the Huskies got a strong pitching performance from their ace and a crucial hit from one of their main sluggers to beat Western Michigan, 3-1, in the first round Wednesday morning at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio.

The No. 4 seeded Huskies (34-18) advance to play top-seeded Kent State, which beat No. 8 Central Michigan, 1-0, Wednesday.

Against the No. 5 Broncos (21-27) on Wednesday, Northern Illinois got a two-run homer by senior catcher Emily Naegele in the third inning. It was the 19th home run of the season for

The close win is welcome news for the Huskies, who constantly found themselves on the wrong side of tight games down the stretch. Of the five losses that came in the final six games of the regular season, they came by a combined seven runs.

Now the Huskies take on the top-seeded Golden Flashes, who improved to 36-20 on the season after beating the Chippewas. During the regular season, Kent State won two of three against Northern Illinois in the series in DeKalb – winning 7-5 in Game 2 and 4-3 in Game 3.

The second round contest between the two teams is slated to start at noon on Wednesday.

Sycamore hired a pair of new head basketball coaches, the athletic department announced Wednesday on Twitter.

Ryan Picolotti will take over as head coach for the boys basketball team and Adam Wickness will take over the girls program.

Sycamore athletic director Chauncey Carrick could not be reached for comment.

Last season, the boys team went 1512 and fell to Kaneland in the regional final under Andrew Stacy and the girls went 21-7 and advanced to the regional final under Brett Goff before falling to St. Francis.

Sanderson went 3 for 4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs for the Royals and Jacob Morsch added two RBIs in the loss.

Frazier stitched up after Sox lose finale at Texas

ARLINGTON, Texas – Todd Frazier had to be stitched up after going all out for the White Sox, and they never seemed the same after the suddenly surging slugger had to leave the game.

Frazier had his third homer and 10th RBI in the three-game series before cutting his lower lip and biting a hole through his tongue while chasing a foul ball into the stands in the Sox’s 6-5 loss against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday.

“It kind of freaked me out because of the way he reacted,” Sox starter Mat Latos said. “It’s a scary moment.”

The Sox third baseman homered in the fourth, but had to leave in the bottom of the inning after he fell hard facefirst into an arm rest attached to seats in the first row while chasing Prince Fielder’s foul pop. Frazier got up, put his glove over his face and immediately went to the White Sox dugout nearby.

He needed five stitches for the cut lip.

“My momentum took me into the stands, and my head went right into the arm rest. Basically, I felt my tongue went through my bottom lip,” Frazier said. “Ice it up a lot and I’ll be good to go for Friday.”

But the Sox then blew the lead three times in consecutive games in less than 24 hours. After losing 13-11 late Tuesday night, they lost again Wednesday, after leading 4-2 when Frazier left the game.

“He is that kind of guy for our team.

And when you lose him, I think focus got lost there for a minute for Matty,” manager Robin Ventura said. “You nev-

er want to lose a guy like that in your lineup.”

Latos allowed five runs in 51/3 innings. With a win, he would have given the Sox their first pair of starters to open a season 6-0 since at least 1913 (Chris Sale is 7-0). The right-hander walked five (one intentional) without a strikeout.

After Frazier’s 11th homer of the season tied the game, Melky Cabrera followed with a single and Brett Law-

rie homered into the Sox bullpen in left field for a 4-2 lead. Bullpen catcher Adam Ricks caught Lawrie’s deep fly, reaching up with his bare hand to make the grab.

But Frazier got hurt in the bottom of the inning, when he actually had the ball in the glove before he fell. He didn’t wait for anyone to tend to him, instead going straight to the dugout.

“That’s why I got scared, when I was like feeling with my tongue, making sure my teeth were there,” he said. “I’ve never had that before.”

Fielder doubled after Frazier left the game, but the Rangers didn’t get even at 4 until the following inning when Fielder looped a two-run double down the left field line with the Sox defense shifted the other way.

Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre had a throwing error in the sixth, ending his streak of 44 games without an error. That led to an unearned run that put the Sox ahead 5-4 against Cole Hamels, but Texas went ahead to stay in the bottom of the inning after Ian Desmond tied the game with his second RBI single and Beltre had one of his own.

Tony Barnette (2-2) got the final out in the sixth and Sam Dyson got hit first save working then ninth, when he benefited from a strikeout-caught stealing double play.

Miscues cost Cubs their 8-game win streak with loss

CHICAGO – Miscues missing during the Cubs’ eight-game winning streak helped bring it to an end.

Brett Wallace hit a three-run homer in San Diego’s four-run seventh inning, and the Padres stopped the Cubs’ streak with a 7-4 victory on Wednesday in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

The Cubs, who have the best record in the majors at 25-7, had been 18-2 this season when leading after six innings.

But Pedro Strop (1-1) failed to retire any of the five batters he faced in the seventh and was charged with three runs and three hits. A throwing error also cost Chicago a run in the decisive half-inning.

“I felt really good about Strop but we didn’t get the ground ball and didn’t make the play,” manager Joe Maddon said of Strop, who put two on before giving up Wallace’s homer. “We just made some mistakes that we haven’t been making.”

Wil Myers had two hits and scored

two runs for San Diego, which had lost three in a row. Carlos Villanueva (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning for the win, and Fernando Rodney got three outs for his ninth save.

Wallace is getting the chance to play every day and making the most of his opportunity.

“Offensively, you have to love his at-bats,” Padres manager Andy Green said. “They’re high quality, he takes his walks, he’s got power and any time he can do something.

“As the year progresses and we finally get healthy, whenever that wonderful day comes, we’ll find a way to get him on the field more often, whether it’s at first base or third base. He’s proven to be incredibly valuable in the lineup.”

Ben Zobrist and Addison Russell each had two hits, but the Cubs wasted a solid start by Kyle Hendricks.

The Padres got off to a fast start, pushing across two runs before Hendricks recorded an out. Travis Jankowski walked, stole second and scored on a throwing error by Cubs third baseman Javier Baez. Matt Kemp then singled in

Myers to make it 2-0 in the first.

San Diego had runners on second and third when Jose Pirela grounded out for the final out of the inning, and Hendricks settled down from there. He allowed three runs, two earned, and six hits in 62/3 innings.

The Cubs got a run back in the bottom of the first on Anthony Rizzo’s RBI single, and Zobrist tied it at 2 with a run-scoring single in the second.

The Cubs then went in front with two runs in the fourth. Baez was hit by a pitch and scored from first when Russell followed with a double to right field. The next batter, backup catcher Tim Federowicz, doubled off the wall in left for a 4-2 lead.

Hendricks was pulled after a bunt single by Jankowski with two out in the seventh, and the Padres jumped all over Strop.

Jankowski advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error by Baez on an infield hit by Myers. Kemp walked and Wallace, the cleanup hitter, followed with a drive to left for his second of the season.

The Padres added an insurance run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Kemp.

STREAKING

Zobrist extended his hitting streak to nine games. He had reached in nine straight plate appearances – going back to Sunday – before flying out to deep center in the sixth.

FRIENDLY CONFINES

Kemp, who went 1 for 3 with two RBIs, enjoys hitting at Wrigley Field.

He has a .310 batting average (35-for-113) with 24 RBIs in 30 games in the ballpark.

LONDON – With the opening ceremony in Rio de Janeiro less than three months away, a Canadian professor has called for the Olympics to be postponed or moved because of the Zika outbreak, warning the influx of visitors to Brazil will result in the avoidable birth of malformed babies.

Brazil is by far the country most affected by Zika, a mosquito-borne virus which has now been scientifically proven to cause a range of disturbing birth defects, including babies born with abnormally small heads and neurological problems.

DeRozan scores 34 as Raptors beat Heat 99-91 in Game 5

TORONTO – DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry went from invisible to indispensable for the Toronto Raptors.

DeRozan matched a playoff high with 34 points, Lowry had 25 and the Raptors beat the Miami Heat 99-91 on Wednesday night to take a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

“We have faith in those guys, they’ve carried us the entire season,” Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. “Not one time did we doubt their ability to score.”

Bismack Biyombo had 10 points for the Raptors, who never trailed. Toronto can clinch its first conference finals berth with a win in Game 6 in Miami on Friday.

Lowry and DeRozan made six of 28 shot attempts and scored 19 total points as Toronto lost 94-87 in overtime in Game 4.

In Game 5, Toronto’s All-Stars tallied 19 points in the first quarter alone. They shot 20 for 47 overall and scored 59 points, their highest total this postseason, even with DeRozan battling a bad thumb that took another hard hit in the second half.

CHICAGO – The Blackhawks and 19-year-old defenseman Gustav Forsling have agreed to a three-year contract.

The Hawks announced the contract Wednesday.

Forsling had six goals and 15 assists in 48 games last season for Linkoping HC in the Swedish Hockey League. He was selected by Vancouver in the fifth round of the 2014 draft, and traded to the Hawks in January 2015 for defenseman Adam Clendening.

Summer screenings

Underdogs in summer movies include originality, opportunity

The Associated Press Hollywood’s summer, which kicked off with the fittingly combative “Captain America: Civil War,” will be a season of struggle: for box office, for originality and for opportunity.

More than ever, the big tent of summer moviegoing is held up by a forest of tentpoles stretching from May to August. The swelling size of the summer movie has turned the season into a game of survival.

The possibility of bombing lurks as an ever-present threat, testosterone often dominates in front of and (especially) behind the camera, and few non-sequel, non-reboot films dare to compete.

Box office and stress levels run high in equal measure.

“It’s a different landscape than 2002 when the first ‘Bourne’ movie came out,” says Matt Damon, who returns to the franchise in Paul Greengrass’ “Jason Bourne” (July 29). “It’s like a high-stakes poker game that I don’t want to be in. The swings are just so brutal. Ben [Affleck] just opened ‘Batman v Superman’ a few weeks ago. Everyone around him and in his life was nervous about it.

You feel less a sense of exultation when they do well and more a sense of relief because the bets are so big now.”

This season is particularly risk-adverse. Out of the 33 films coming from the major studios, only 12 aren’t a sequel, reboot or based on an already popular property, such as a videogame or best-seller. Take comedy and horror out of the equation and you’re left with just a handful of originals. One of them is Jodie Foster’s “Money Monster” (May 13), a thriller about a brash financial news pundit taken hostage on the air, starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

Foster’s film is doubly rare. She’s one of only two female filmmakers helming major studio releases this summer. Though equality remains a year-round issue for the movie business, the constricted summer months can reveal Hollywood at its most retrograde.

“It’s interesting to me that the studio system still sees women as a risk,” says Foster, who wonders if women ultimately even want to inherit some of the kinds of films that dominate the summer. “There are movies that are part of the system we may not be that interested in embracing. I think that more women in the film business will look slightly different than it’s looked in the past for men.”

“To put out a movie like this in the heart of tentpole season when it’s all these big movies out there, I find it very exciting because a lot of these movies are very male driven, even though they have some great female characters in them,” Feig says. “But to have this be about four incredibly funny people who just happen to be women, I think that’s really exciting.”

This summer includes a number of anticipated sequels (“Finding Dory,” “Star Trek Beyond,” “Alice Through the Looking Glass”), the expected Matt Damon stars in “Jason Bourne,” in theaters nation- superhero films (“Civil War,” “Suicide Squad,” wide July 29.

“X-Men: Apocalypse”) and some less likely resurrections (“The Legend of Tarzan,” “Ben-Hur,” Paul Feig’s “Ghostbusters” reboot (July 15) was “Independence Day: Resurgence”).

The Art Box to host ‘My Kishwaukee Concert Band to Thoughts’ pastels exhibit perform final concert of season DAILY CHRONICLE

DAILY CHRONICLE Dorothea Bilder, local artist and professor emeritus who taught printmaking, drawing and illustration at Northern Illinois University, will exhibit a series of dry pigment pastels titled “My Thoughts” at The Art Box in DeKalb from May 16 to June 9. An opening reception is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

There comes a time when an artist has to use the materials that are available in the studio. Bilder was determined to use remnants of dry pigment pastels and a stack of white Arches rag printmaking paper, repurposing some of the paper that already had lithographic impressions.

“My Thoughts” continues the body of work in which she uses the written word as the basis of what she is creating, expressing her thoughts on paper, like a journal.

From the placement and calligraphic gestures, an image may emerge from the many layers of pastels. The original goal was to do a drawing a day during the summer of 1977.

The process of using dry pigment pastels continued during the summer months through 1985, her first summer in São Paolo, Brazil.

“Um, yeah, we’ll find out,” says Samberg, laughing. “It’s heavy duty.

We were looking at the schedule and we were like: Holy crap. There’s stuff that’s coming out the week before and the week during us and the week after us, and they’re all really big movies. [Producer Judd Apatow] and the studio felt really strongly about summer and that we had something we could put there.”

Bilder received a bachelor’s degree in painting from Illinois Wesleyan University and attended the School of Art in Terni, Italy, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Southern Illinois University, receiving a master of fine arts degree in painting.

Bilder’s art has been celebrated in Canada, Brazil, China, England and Poland, and her work has been acquired by many corporations, personal and university collections, notably, Central University of Queensland, Australia.

The concert will open with “Festival Prelude” and “Three Ayres From Gloucester,” a three-movement selection written in the style of an English folk song.

“Toccata for Band” opens with a flourishing woodwind melody that is followed by a dark yet flowing clarinet chorale, and numerous time signature changes, giving the piece a sharp and angular feel. “Porgy and Bess” by George Gershwin will close out the first segment of the concert.

The second half will open with “Bombasto,” a classic circus “scream-

er” march known for its exuberant spirit, flashy low brass runs and memorable melody.

Lundbeck will be the featured soloist on “In A Reflective Mood.” He is a graduate of Sycamore High School and Northern Illinois University. He has studied with some of the finest trombone instructors in the world, and performed with the Illinois, Rockford, Elgin and Kishwaukee Symphony orchestras. He has been a member of the DeKalb Municipal Band for the past 37 years and was selected conductor and music director in 2012. He plays throughout the Midwest, and has his own jazz trio, “The Black Tie Jazz Trio.” He also can be found as the pro at Sycamore Golf Club.

Lundbeck’s solo will be followed by “Prairiescape” and “On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss” and “Lassus Trombone.”

The concert will conclude with “The Star Spangled Banner.”

The Kishwaukee Concert Band is made up of volunteers older than 18 who have played a wind or percussion instrument in the past. No auditions are needed. Clarinets are especially welcome. Rehearsals are Wednesdays from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. at the Huntley Middle School band room.

The band is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and contributions are tax deductible.

Magnesium doesn’t cure insomnia Dear Dr. K: I have trouble falling asleep, and melatonin has not worked. I want to avoid medications, and I have read magnesium supplements can help. Should I try them?

Dear Reader: Magnesium is important for many biological functions, including nerve and muscle function. It might have a role as a preventive treatment for migraine headaches. But there is not strong scientific evidence for its use with insomnia.

The studies that have suggested a sleep benefit have been small (fewer than 50 participants) and short (eight weeks). Small benefits in sleep quality were observed in subjects who were elderly. One study was of nursing home residents. With such limited evidence, it is difficult to strongly support regular use of magnesium for insomnia.

Is there a reason to think you lack magnesium? Since most of the magnesium in the body is inside cells and bones, blood levels of the mineral do not tell the whole story. Magnesium deficiency is common in hospitalized individuals. That’s particularly true for patients in intensive care units.

But it is unusual in healthy people.

You might be at increased risk of low magnesium if you take certain medications. Some diuretic medicines, used to get rid of excess fluid and to lower blood pressure, increase magnesium loss in the urine.

Long-term use of proton-pump inhibitors for acid reflux can interfere with magnesium absorption. In most other people, dietary magnesium should be sufficient.

Your kidneys control how much magnesium is eliminated in your urine. When your blood levels of magnesium are low, your kidneys keep magnesium in the blood and out of the urine.

The following “sleep hygiene” habits also will help you get some shuteye: • Stay away from stimulants. Avoid caffeinated beverages after early afternoon.

Avoid alcoholic “nightcaps,” as alcohol also is a stimulant. At first, it may help you to nod off. But several hours after your last drink, the alcohol starts stimulating the brain, keeping you from deep sleep.

• Don’t nap if you can avoid it. If you can’t stay awake, limit yourself to a 15- to 20-minute afternoon nap.

• Exercise regularly, but not within a few hours before bedtime. Exercise stimulates the brain and makes it harder to fall asleep promptly.

• Set a sleep schedule. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, shooting for seven to nine hours of sleep.

• Make your bedroom a sleep sanctuary.

Reserve it for sleep, intimacy and restful activities such as meditation and reading for pleasure. Keep it cool, dark and quiet.

• Don’t watch the clock. Watching the sleepless minutes pass makes it harder to fall back to sleep.

• Establish a relaxing routine before bedtime. Meditate, take a warm shower or listen to quiet music.

Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY We have a child who was adopted Jeanne through a closed Phillips adoption. We met the birth parents briefly at the hospital, but they wanted no further contact. Both birth parents had issues with drug abuse, and our daughter was born with drug issues, too.

A few years later, we were contacted via the adoption agency by the paternal birth grandparents. They requested some photos because the birth father was getting out of jail and they thought the photos would help keep him out of trouble. We sent a nice collection of photos and an update on our child.

The next year, the birth grandparents sent a letter saying they would like more contact, including visits. The birth father, who now is back in jail, never contacted us and, as far as we know, does not want any contact.

Our daughter is 6 and has expressed interest in her birth family. My husband wants no contact with the birth grandparents since neither of the birth parents consented to contact and it was a closed adoption. He also is concerned our other adopted children may be hurt and jealous since they can’t have contact with their birth parents for various reasons.

I am worried our daughter will be upset when she grows up that we never established a relationship with her birth family, but I really don’t want to be involved with a family with such complex drug and legal issues. We have a large extended family, and our daughter sees her grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins all the time. Should we start a relationship with her birth grandparents? – Uncertain Down

He will lose two clubs, one heart and one spade. Since the spade loser is inevitable, South should discard his spade two at trick three. Then, if West persists with a fourth club, declarer can ruff high on the board, draw trumps, and claim. Or, if West shifts to, say, a spade, South can take those 10 top tricks.
