Vision of the ideal Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is a cross-cultural celebration where we honor the women in our lives who have made a difference or have given birth to us.

Our proud children bring crafts from school and breakfast in bed. Reservations are made so mothers don’t have to cook, bake or clean dishes. It’s quite the extravaganza for families and friends.

It is a privilege to be a mother. I am honored to have a daughter who warms my heart every day. She has made me a better person. Hannah Jo is the best part of me.

With all that being said, I also want to give the utmost respect and gratitude to the unknown author who wrote, “The definition of a mother is one person who does the work of 20.

For free.” This quote resonates with the fibers of my soul.

I work full time and then I am expected to come home, change diapers, wipe snot, read books, take walks, give baths, and do it all with a smile on my face. Did I mention it is for free?

I would need to grow an extra pair of hands and eyes just to lighten the load. Since this will never happen, I have a better solution to compensate for working like 20 people every day.

Mothers deserve a break. At least one day out of the year that we don’t have to do anything but pamper ourselves. This day should be Mother’s Day. A day without responsibilities and kids. Yep, I said it.

REPORT: BULLYING IS A SERIOUS PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEM

WASHINGTON – Zero-tolerance policies are ineffective in combating bullying, an independent government advisory group says in urging schools to take a more preventive approach that includes teaching tolerance to address this “serious public health problem.”

In a report released Tuesday, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine said bullying should no longer be dismissed as merely a matter of kids being kids. “Its prevalence perpetuates its normalization. But bullying is not a normal part of childhood,” the report said.

Then a nice jaunt in the sauna while sipping on ice cold lemon water. Last, but not least, a nice blowout on my hair. All the while, leisurely dozing in and out of naps.

Personally, I can’t think of a better way or day to relax.

Daughters and sons can hang out with their dads. Maybe they could go out to eat and play at Hopkins Park. Dads are helpful hands that maintain the sanity of their babies’ mamas.

This ideal situation would, of course, be reciprocated on Father’s Day. Don’t fault me for wanting a day of tranquility. We only live once. And once a year I deserve a day to rejuvenate. After all, I do the work of 20 each and every day.

Schools, the researchers concluded, should end zero-tolerance policies that automatically suspend students for bullying.

“There’s no evidence that they are impactful in a positive way,” said Catherine Bradshaw, a professor and associate dean at the University of Virginia, and part of the committee that wrote the report. “They can actually do more harm than good and in fact don’t provide the skill training or replacement behaviors for youth that are suspended or expelled.”

The report also said zero-tolerance policies may lead to an underreporting of bullying because suspensions are perceived as too punitive.

ACCESSIBLE LITERATURE Literacy clinic opens another Little Free Library

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Kids at Mason Court Apartments lined up Tuesday for a peek at the new library in their own backyard – literally.

The Jerry L. Johns Literacy Clinic partnered with Little Free Library, an independent organization promoting free access to books, to open its seventh little library Tuesday at Mason Court Apartments, 275 N. Cross St., Sycamore.

Once the ribbon was cut and the door opened, tiny hands reached blindly in pursuit of the perfect book. Minutes later, the children emerged with their prizes: copies of “Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief,” “Harry Potter” and “Goosebumps.”

“The idea is just to have a library that’s accessible to people who might not be able to make it to their public library or be able to buy books and to kind of set that fire for reading,” Jerry L. Johns Literacy Clinic outreach coordinator James “Twigz” McGuire said.

Throughout the county, books are piled into donated Daily Chronicle newsstands, and borrowed using the honor system. Other locations include AB Supermarket, 1612 Sycamore Road, DeKalb; Flamingo Ice Cream Inc., 1029 Pleasant St., DeKalb; Gideon Court Apartments, 1325 W. Lincoln Highway, DeKalb; and University Village Apartments, 722 N. Annie Glidden Road, DeKalb.

“The purpose is to spread the love of books and reading throughout the community,” Jerry L. Johns Literacy Clinic Director Laurie Elish-Piper said. “This library was created by the community for the community.”

The first Little Free Library was erected as a handmade memorial in 2009. Today, there are more than 36,000 registered Little Free Library locations nationwide.

“The philosophy behind it is just that there are these free books, you can take them, read them and return them, but if you love that book, you can just keep it,” McGuire said. “But then the hope is that you have benefited, and would give back. So find a book that you love, put it in there and hope someone else gets it.”

Nine-year-old Leticia Galvan loves her new little library, but when she finishes “Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief,” she’ll likely bring it back, since she isn’t emotionally ready to part with any of her own books, she said.

“I really like that movie and I always want to watch it over and over again,” Galvan said. “And I also like books of movies like Ariel and Cinderella.”

Little libraries aren’t just for little readers, either. McGuire does his best to stock each box for the entire spectrum of readers, he said. Each location starts out with an inventory of infant literacy, to young adult, fiction and nonfiction. Eventually, though, the libraries begin to reflect their community’s interests, McGuire said.

“It kind of varies between the different locations,” he said. “Spanish-speaking books go super fast by The Flamingo, but AB Supermarket is usually adult readers. Whenever I put out an adult novel, it’s always gone.”

Since a majority of the books are donated to the literacy clinic by friends, community members, local libraries, and the DeKalb-Sycamore Bookcase Project, McGuire is constantly updating each library’s inventory, he said.

Somonauk Middle School’s Aubart preps for 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee “I’m excited for all the stuff besides the bee.

browland@shawmedia.com SOMONAUK – Jessica Aubart is studying spelling, word origins and vocabulary as she prepares to compete in the 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee later this month, but the 13-year-old Somonauk Middle School student is looking forward to more than just competing with the nation’s top young spellers.

“I’m excited for all the stuff besides the bee,” Jessica said. “I get to meet people who are like me, who don’t think it is weird to read a dictionary.”

In addition to getting to know other spellers who share her passion, Jessica also is looking forward to meeting Jacques Bailly, the 1980 national champion and the official pronouncer of the Bee. Jessica finished first out of 20 competitors at the DeKalb County Spelling Bee in March.

Jessica will join 284 other spellers in National Harbor, Maryland, for Bee Week 2016, which will be May 22 to 27. She will be among the 87 seventh-grade students competing in the bee. Seventh-graders make up 30.5 percent of the total spellers at this year’s competition. She is speller No. 62.

Jessica’s trip to the national bee is sponsored by the Daily Chronicle.

In March, Jessica beat out 20 other spellers in the DeKalb County Spelling Bee, earning the chance to compete at the national level. That was a big accomplishment for Jessica, especially after a disappointing loss in the final round of the 2015 DeKalb County Spelling Bee. Jessica caught the bee bug after watching the 2006 film “Akeelah and the Bee.” When her mother, Claire Aubart, first bought the movie – about a girl from south Los Angeles who dreams of competing in the national spelling bee – her daughter didn’t think she’d like it. However, after watching it, Jessica was hooked.

from friends and teachers, including bee coordinator Lois Whalen. “[Jessica’s] goal since fifth grade [has been] to make it [to] the National Spelling Bee, and she did,” Whalen said. “Jessica is a very self-motivated individual who has prepared for this all by herself. She

can be seen looking at word lists, reading to improve her vocabulary and reviewing word parts and origins to assist her.

“She has a close group of friends that she has quiz her on the words and help her review. We are so proud of her and hope that she can advance in the competition.”

Somonauk Middle School Principal Justin Snider said the school’s more than 250 students have rallied behind Jessica.

“The school and the students have all been very supportive,” he said. “She definitely puts a lot of work in. At this age, many students are afraid to take chances, but she puts herself out there. We’re a small school, so we’re all excited for her.”

Snider called Jessica’s dedication to her goals, both inside and outside the classroom, “an inspiration for all the kids” at the school.

In National Harbor, Jessica’s goal is to make it past the written part of the competition and into the onstage rounds, which begin May 25.

The winner of the Scripps Howard Spelling Bee will receive $40,000, a $2,500 U.S. savings bond, $400 worth of reference works and a three-year membership to Brittanica Online from Encyclopedia Brittanica, and an expense-paid trip to New York City to appear on ABC-TV’s “Live!” morning show.

formerly of Saddlebrooke, AZ, and Geneva, passed away Born: June 1, 1918 Thursday, May 5, 2016, at Died: May 4, 2016 home with her family by her side.

Phylis M. Cunningham, She was born November 97, of DeKalb, Illinois, died 12, 1937, in Cedar Rapids, IA, Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at the daughter of William and Marie (Mulherin) Oak Crest in DeKalb.

DeLay. Born June 1, 1918, in Clare, Maureen was raised in Cedar Rapids. She the daughter of Walter and married her devoted husband, Gary, on May Carrie (Vesta ) Corey, Phylis 21, 1960, in St. Patrick Cathedral in Cedar married Orville J. Cunningham on Oct. 28, Rapids. Maureen and Gary moved to Geneva, 1939, in Downers Grove.

She graduated from the DeKalb High School where they laid down their roots and raised their family. She enjoyed sewing and travelClass of 1936. Phylis was employed by the ing, but the joy of her life was being with her Malta School District, and later, the DeKalb family. Maureen loved spending time with her School District, from which she retired in 1980. She was a member of the Malta United grandchildren and created lasting memories with them. She was a loving mother, grandMethodist Church, The United Methodist mother, sister and friend and will be dearly Women’s Society, and a 64-year member of missed.

She is survived by her children, Sheri (Chris) She is survived by her sons, James Sheridan Cunningham of Costa Rica, and Stanton Allen Crandall of St. Charles, Brian (Amy) of DeKalb, Cunningham of Rochelle; sister-in-law, Caro- Brad (Debbie) of Elburn; grandchildren, Stephen and Erin Crandall, Dylan, Allison, Ellen lyn (Howard) Cunningham; nephew, Ronald and Austin Jones; brothers John (Charlotte) Cunningham; and niece, Dr. Kim Cunningham, DeLay of CT, Emmet (June) DeLay of MA, and all of California.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob (Anne) DeLay of NE; and many other dear relatives and friends.

rgillespie@shawmedia.com MALTA – A former Sycamore High School math teacher is now the chief financial officer at Kishwaukee College, after the board of trustees voted Tuesday to promote her from the interim role.

Beth Young was first hired by the community college in 2009 as dean of business affairs. She replaces her former boss, Robert Galick, who had been the vice president of finance and administration before he quit Feb. 5.

“We felt, at this point, she’s very capable,” said Bob Johnson, president of the Kishwaukee College board of trustees. “She’s demonstrated her abilities.”

Young was immediately chosen to fill in as interim financial chief.

Tuesday, she was appointed to the position for at least one year as part of a collection of several other measures trustees approved during their monthly meeting.

“I’m ready to go, and step up to the challenge,” said Young, who got her MBA from DeVry University’s Keller Graduate School of Management. She was a high school math teacher from 2002 to 2004.

Galick tendered his resignation from the college Feb. 1. He served as vice president of finance and administration at a salary of $133,352 and vacated the post Feb. 5.

Trustees held off last month on voting on Galick’s severance package

to allow time for an internal financial audit. Johnson said the probe was customary for the position Galick held, and that college officials didn’t suspect any wrongdoing on the former CFO’s part.

Johnson said Tuesday that the audit had been completed. By press time, the board leader had only seen a summary of the report and didn’t know if there were any findings.

Although Galick quit ahead of his June 2018 contract expiration, he walks away with a severance package approved Tuesday that includes a cash payout of $77,788 for wages, $9,660 for health care benefits and $10,514 for unused vacation time.

Young will be paid $100,000 – more than $33,000 less than her predecessor – and her appointment calls for annual renewals, according to college records.

She explained that the decreased salary is because of the downsizing of duties and dropping the vice president title.

“They took the VP position and they allocated out some of the responsibilities. The VP position used to oversee facilities as well as security.

They have taken that out of the role so that we can concentrate on the financial health of the college,” Young said.

SYCAMORE – Sycamore School District 427 considered at Tuesday’s board meeting reducing the amount of impact fees it collects for the purchasing, construction or modification of land.

Superintendent Kathy Countryman met with Sycamore City Manager Brian Gregory about updating the the district’s portion of impact fees, which hadn’t been adjusted since 2005, Countryman said. The suggested change would mean a $200 drop in fees for single-family homes.

New figures for three-bedroom single-family homes propose collecting: $2,453 from detached homes, $1,107 from attached homes and $1,599 from apartment residents, board documents show. Now the district faces a decrease in property value – which is estimated at $99,375 per acre land value – and an increase in Sycamore

Middle School student capacity, board President Jim Dombek said.

“The last time this impact fee was considered was before we had remodeled the middle school,” Dombek said.

“After the remodeling, the school’s capacity has increased somewhat, so we’ve replaced that value in the formula as well.”

Countryman and Dombek also recommended updating the numbers used to calculate the district’s impact fee distribution every two to three years.

“I know sometimes that’s going to cut against us and we’re going to lose some revenue because property values go down, and there will be other times in the cycle when property values go up and that will help us a little more,” Dombek said.

The board will vote on the matter May 24.

If the proposal is approved for recommendation, it will likely be heard by the City Council in June.

D-424 begins search for next superintendent

GENOA – The search process to replace the Genoa-Kingston School District 424 superintendent has gotten started – one year before Joe Burgess is set to pass the mantle.

A notice dated May 4 is on the District 424 website asking for district parents, school board members, teachers and staff to complete a survey giving input on the search process to replace current Superintendent Joe Burgess.

Burgess is retiring at the end of the 2016-17 year, after what will be seven years as district chief.

However, he has served in the capacity as a superintendent for nearly two decades.

“The selection of a new superintendent is probably the most important decision a board of education has to make,” a statement on the website reads. “Therefore, the board has hired the Illinois Association of School

Boards to assist in the process.”

IASB has provided the survey that stakeholders are asked to complete

by May 23.

Information from the survey will be used to create an advertisement for the superintendent position, the agency states.

County law enforcement officers’ set memorial service

SYCAMORE – Law enforcement officers from across DeKalb County will gather Monday for a memorial service for fallen officers.

The memorial service will be 4:30 p.m. Monday at the DeKalb County Courthouse, 133 W. State St., Sycamore.

The service will remember the 128 officers who gave their lives in service to their communities in 2015, according to a news release from the Sycamore Police Department.

The event is open to the public.

SYCAMORE – A jury was seated Tuesday afternoon in the trial of a 41-year-old Genoa man accused of predatory criminal sexual assault involving a 4-year-old girl.

Stuart B. Diaz, of the 31100 block of Madison Street, could face a minimum of 18 years in prison if convicted. Prosecutors and DeKalb County Public Defender Tom McCulloch, who was appointed to represent Diaz, spent Stuart B. much of Tuesday select- Diaz ing jurors.

They asked prospective jurors about what type of work they did, their experiences with the court system, police officers and their families.

They also asked prospective jurors if they could distinguish between the

dramatized fictions portrayed in TV crime shows and the realities of the case at hand.

McCulloch asked one juror, a woman who had a 7-year-old daughter, if she could be impartial given that the prosecution’s main witness would be a girl about that age. The woman said she could be impartial.

The trial is expected to continue today and Thursday.

Last week, Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein told Judge Robbin Stuckert that the state had offered a plea agreement that would have required Diaz to spend 10 years in prison. Diaz turned down the offer, opting for the jury trial.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s investigators began looking into the allegations of sexual abuse by Diaz in October 2013.

The alleged abuse occurred between July 2011 and October 2013, court records show.

Schools warn of closures without budget

John Pearson, the superintendent of East Alton-Wood River Community High School District 14, said the only way to balance their budget after years of cuts would be to lay off 40 percent of the staff.

The superintendents said they favored Rauner’s idea of adding more funding to schools without a formula

change because they prefer the certainty of having the money. Some of the Democratic state lawmakers who represent them agreed.

“Let’s give these men and women here that run our schools that have the responsibility of educating our youth, let’s give them some certainty right now moving forward,” said Rep. Dan Beiser, a Democrat from Alton.

Education funding is the only portion of the budget for the current year that Rauner signed, meaning schools have largely been spared the consequences of the budget impasse.

Sen. Andy Manar, a Democrat from Bunker Hill sponsoring the formula change, said his plan would ensure that school districts see no cuts over the next four years with a $400 million investment from the state.

His plan would gradually change districts’ reliance on property taxes and take local wealth into account when distributing funds. Over time, the state would shift more of its financial support toward needier districts.

Without his formula change, Manar said, poorer districts would continue to suffer and “this system is going to continue to erode.”

The total budget for schools is expected to be about $10 billion for the fiscal year beginning July 1.

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois superintendents warned of school closures and staff layoffs Tuesday as they implored state lawmakers to pass a budget to give them certainty for the fall when the new academic year begins.

The challenge facing superintendents is that the epic partisan gridlock that has left the state without a budget for 11 months is spilling over into education, with ideological differences over how to proceed with funding.

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner is asking lawmakers for $55 million more to fully fund the general state aid to schools instead of prorating it like it’s been done the past seven years to balance the books. Senate Democrats, meanwhile, say that while more money is good, the state’s complicated, 20-yearold school funding formula must be overhauled now so it’s fairer to property-tax-poor districts.

But superintendents from districts including Kankakee, Moline and Streator expressed worry Tuesday that there’s no agreement for next year yet.

They say they’ll have to deplete their reserves to open this fall and that some might not make it all year.

News from across the state Board approves U of Chicago hospital expansion

NORMAL – A state review board has approved a $269 million expansion proposal from the University of Chicago Medical Center that includes an adult trauma center.

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board unanimously approved the plan Tuesday in Normal.

Community activists have been pushing for years for adult trauma care on Chicago’s South Side, an area without such care since 1991.

The University of Chicago now must gain approval to be a Level 1 adult trauma center from the Chicago Trauma Network and the Illinois Department of Public Health. Hospital officials said

Ex-U.S. Rep. Reynolds wants to plead guilty in tax case

CHICAGO – Former U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds said in a handwritten court filing posted Tuesday that he wants to plead guilty to misdemeanor federal charges of failing to file a tax return.

“I request to come to court at the earliest time possible to enter my plea of guilty,” Reynolds wrote in the filing. A status hearing is scheduled for May 19.

Reynolds is acting as his own attorney.

Reynolds was arrested April 11 at an Atlanta airport when he arrived from South Africa after failing to attend an earlier hearing in the tax case. U.S. District Judge John Darrah ordered him taken into custody.

He is being held at a detention center in Kankakee.

Hearing postponed on proposed Lucas Museum

CHICAGO – A hearing has been postponed in a civil case aimed at halting construction on filmmaker George Lucas’ proposed art museum in Chicago.

The hearing was scheduled for Tuesday morning in Chicago federal court but was later postponed until June 15. Legal maneuvers and public statements preceded the status hearing.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel last week turned to an appeals court to seek the dismissal of the lawsuit filed by a parks advocacy group that opposes the proposed lakefront museum.

That move came after Lucas’ wife said the wrangling led them to look for sites in other cities.

The judge has said he could lift an order halting construction while the litigation proceeds. But he warned that builders would have to dismantle any structures if the parks group eventually prevails.

Ind. continues to pursue Illiana Expressway proposal

MUNSTER, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation has agreed to pay to make changes to an environmental impact statement to try to revive the proposed Illiana Expressway toll road project linking northern Illinois and northwestern Indiana.

INDOT submitted a document April 25 in U.S. District Court in Chicago stating it had reached an agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation to pay for the technical work to comply with the court’s order on the expressway.

A judge ruled last year that the federal government’s approval of the 47-mile highway was “arbitrary and capricious” and violated U.S. environmental law.

INDOT spokesman Will Wingfield told The (Munster) Times the agency estimates it will cost less than $150,000 to revise the document. IDOT spokesman Guy Tridgell said Illinois is not pursuing the project.

Key Senate Republicans show support for Trump The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – Key Senate Republicans voiced optimism Tuesday about Donald Trump’s presidential prospects in November, signaling clearly to the GOP rank and file to unite behind the bombastic billionaire and turn their energy toward battling Democrat Hillary Clinton. But it was uncertain whether they could quiet the doubters.

“We have a nominee, it looks like he may well be very competitive, and we want to win the White House,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., told reporters.

He also said, “We know that Hillary Clinton will be four more years of Barack Obama.

I think that’s going to in the end be enough to unify Republicans across the country.”

The comments came as voters in West Virginia gave Trump yet another primary victory on Tuesday.

Doubt and angst over Trump remained palpable as GOP lawmakers returned to Capitol Hill from a weeklong recess that saw him effectively clinch the presidential nomination. For some, the question of whether they were backing their party’s standard-bearer – a no-brainer in a normal election year – proved too much to answer.

“We’re not doing any Trump questions today,” an aide to Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois told a crowd of reporters as Kirk, one of the most endangered Senate Republicans, sped into a meeting.

Another Republican who’s up for re-election, Tim Scott of South Carolina, offered his support, but like others managed to sound grudging and backhanded in the process.

“I’m supporting the Republican candidate, and it happens to be Donald Trump,” he said.

“The only thing I can do is get re-elected so we have a Republican majority in the Senate,” Isakson said. “I will support the Republican ticket and I’m endorsing me for my Senate seat.”

The comments reflected ongoing divisions in a party still reeling over Trump’s success in locking up the nomination and pushing his two remaining rivals from the race last week. McConnell and others have decided that the best approach is to get behind Trump.

But especially in light of House Speaker Paul Ryan’s surprise decision to withhold his support, unity is elusive for now.

That could start to change Thursday, when Ryan, McConnell and other congressional Republicans meet with Trump, who himself has downplayed the meeting and suggested he can win the election unity or no.

Ryan defended his stance anew Tuesday, insisting that he was just being honest in saying Trump had more work to do to show he could unify the party after alienating numerous voters, including women, Hispanics and many conservatives.

“It is going to take more than a week to unify this par-

ty,” Ryan said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal broadcast online. “If we just pretend to unify without unifying, then we’ll only be at half-strength, and it won’t be good for us in the fall.”

But some Republicans argued that Ryan himself was making it harder to unify by essentially giving other Republicans cover to refuse to get behind Trump.

“I didn’t really appreciate his comments,” said Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma. “They have to establish a workable relationship, and I think they will, but that’s not a good way to start.”

Yet after a bruising primary season, others were not yet ready to move on. GOP Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, Trump’s leading opponent before he dropped out last week, made clear he was in no hurry to endorse the mogul and reality TV star who defeated him.

“The voters in the primary seem to have made a choice and we’ll see what happens as the months go forward,” Cruz told conservative talk radio host Glenn Beck.

Cruz went so far as to leave open the possibility of restarting his campaign if he should score a surprise win in Nebraska, while making clear he didn’t anticipate that outcome.

Donald Trump: A leader with no standards

House Speaker Paul Ryan isn’t ready to support his party’s standard bearer until that standard bearer proves that he has ... well ... standards.

Without ever mentioning Donald Trump by name, Ryan laid down a marker last week in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper: He will need to know whether Trump has any principles before he can support the presumptive nominee.

Good for Paul Ryan – he should stick to this position.

But Ryan shouldn’t hold out much hope: Trump has made it clear so far that he has no polestar. He’s a deal maker willing to deal away nearly anything or say nearly anything. That may work well in New York real estate; it works rather poorly in statecraft.

Let’s not forget what Trump has said so far to get the nomination: He would deport 11 million undocumented immigrants, even though anyone who has studied the immigration issue has said that what Trump proposes is not only cruel but impossible. Trump has said he would ban all Muslims from entering the country – thus establishing a religious test for the land of the free. He’s made jokes and spoken disparagingly about women – time after time after time. On election day last Tuesday, on the eve of clinching the nomination, he insinuated that the father of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, then still his chief rival, had something to do with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Shall we go on?

“I hope to support our nominee ... I’m just not there right now,” said Ryan, saying it was “time to set aside bullying” and offer an aspirational message based on conservative principles.

“We will need a standard-bearer that can unify all Republicans, all conservatives, all wings of our party” and appeal to independents and a diverse array of Americans, Ryan said. “We have work to do.

Our nominee has work to do.”

Trump’s response? “I am not ready to support Speaker Ryan’s agenda. Perhaps in the future we can work together and come to an agreement about what is best for the American people.”

Ryan objects to Trump, we suspect because he, like many conservatives, doesn’t believe Trump is a conservative. There is good reason to believe that. Trump has waffled on social issues and given plenty of money to Democrats in the past. And, as noted, who can tell what he really believes?

Our objection is more fundamental: We believe Trump is wholly unfit to be president – now or ever. He can’t be trusted with the reins of the world’s most powerful office. He’s unsteady and unpredictable – which he claims is a strength, though in dealing with foreign powers it is hardly that. And he’s embraced not only outlandish ideas (including being the birther-in-chief in raising silly questions about President Barack Obama’s lineage), but he’s also insulted practically everyone who has challenged him.

The GOP has lots of work to do to bring itself together. As Ryan said, “I think a lot of the burden is on the presumptive nominee to do that, and so we’ll see.”

Iran’s ‘moderates’ and the Holocaust At the heart of the Obama administration’s diplomatic engagement with Iran is the notion that the regime is divided among hard-liners who foment its terrorism and regional aggression and more moderate forces who are open to cooperation with the West.

The embodiment of the latter is said to be Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, an English-speaking favorite of many Western journalists and, even more so, Secretary of State John F. Kerry.

However, if there really is a gulf between Zarif and the supposed hard-liners, he often does a good job of disguising it. During the 18-month imprisonment of The Post’s Jason Rezaian, for example, Zarif offered public support for the absurd and mendacious claim that Rezaian was guilty of espionage. The foreign minister suggested Rezaian had been taken “advantage” of by an “overzealous low-level operative” of the U.S. government.

More recently, Zarif was asked to explain why Iran is sponsoring a cartoon festival beginning this Saturday on the theme of the Holocaust. It’s the second time the regime has staged such a event; the first, a poisonous orgy of anti-Semitism, was held in 2006 under President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad – one of the “hard-liners,” according to Obama administration theory.

Zarif’s response to interviewer Robin Wright of the New Yorker was a form of denialism: He claimed the Rouhani administration had nothing to do with the exhibition.

The sponsor is a nongovernmental organization “that is not controlled by the Iranian government,” he said. Moreover, he said, the organization had not needed government permission to stage the event. It was, he said, comparable to the activity in the United States of the Ku Klux Klan.

“Is the government of the United States

responsible for the fact the there are racially hateful organizations in the United States?” he demanded.

Naturally, it didn’t take long for this dissembling to be challenged. What was interesting is that some of the pushback came from Zarif’s own government. A spokesman for the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance confirmed that the ministry supports the exhibition, along with other programs that “enlighten people about the Holocaust.”

A festival official also reported that it was cooperating with the ministry.

The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum reports that one of the organizations staging the festival, the Owj Media and Cultural Institute, is funded by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps; another, the Sarcheshmeh Cultural Complex, is backed by the Islamic Development Organization, whose budget is approved by the Iranian parliament. As for whether a public exhibition can be held in Tehran without official approval, we’ll believe that as soon as the first festival of liberal democracy takes place.

Zarif claimed that “people who have preached racial hatred and violence” would not be issued visas to attend the cartoon conference. We’ll soon see if that’s the case.

In the meantime, it’s worth considering the response Wright got when she asked the foreign minister about President Obama’s recent reference to “the more reasonable forces in Iran.”

“That’s what I do not believe – that dividing Iran into ‘reasonable’ and ‘unreasonable’ forces is either correct, conducive, or anybody’s business,” Zarif said. “When the United States exercised that practice in the past, it didn’t produce results.”

On that, we’ll take Zarif at his word.

And, the unkindest cut of all: A number of Republicans say Trump’s candidacy will drive them into the arms of someone the party has long regarded as the very embodiment of evil. “I’m with her,” GOP speechwriter Mark Salter tweeted, invoking the campaign slogan of the dreaded Hillary Clinton.

One is tempted to draw an analogy to rats deserting the Titanic, but that would unfairly malign the rats. After all, they didn’t drive the ship into that iceberg. The Republicans, however, are very much the architects of their present misfortune.

When you spend decades stoking people’s insecurities, resentment and outrage, when you devote thousands of radio and TV hours to scapegoating

the marginalized and demonizing the vulnerable, when you campaign on coded appeals to xenophobia, racism and misogyny, when you make facts optional and lies routine, when you prioritize expedience above integrity and embrace ignorance as somehow more authentically American, you may not credibly profess surprise when you produce a candidate who embodies all those traits.

The damage the party has done itself is manifest and may be irreversible. But the bigger concern, by far, is how much damage the party has done to this country. It’s a question that has loomed for a very long time.

In pondering Election Day, then, one is reminded of the person who finally makes a doctor’s appointment six months after discovering a mysterious lump. Sometimes, people behave as if avoiding knowing about the bad thing avoids the bad thing itself.

But of course, it does not. You either have cancer or you don’t. Visiting the doctor does not affect that one way or another. It simply tells you what you’re dealing with.

Similarly, this country has ei-

ther lost itself down a rabbit hole of ignorance and lies, fear and fury, or it has not. Certainly, the symptoms have long been obvious. From faith-based foreign policy to cynical obstructionism to economic hostage-taking to birther nonsense, right up to Donald Trump’s neo-fascism, it has long been clear that something was wrong with the GOP, that it had become a fundamentally unserious haven of cranks and kooks.

Now the party offers us its kookiest crank as president. Make no mistake: Any country that would elect Donald Trump as president deserves Donald Trump as president. But the question is: Are we that country? Are we that far gone? Whether we are or are not, it’s past time we knew. So fine, let’s do this.

What’s coming in November is not an election. No, it’s a reckoning, long overdue.

Fix Puerto Rico’s debt now, or bail it out later

Here are some facts: • The commonwealth of Puerto Rico cannot pay its debt of more than $70 billion. The government has already defaulted on several payments.

• The human cost of the debt crisis is growing, especially for the near-majority of the population that lives in poverty. According to Gov. Alejandro García Padilla, the Puerto Rican government can “barely cover the costs of providing services to special-needs children,” let alone gas for police cars and fire trucks, electricity for hospitals, or measures to combat the Zika virus (it doesn’t help that many doctors are leaving the island).

• Attempts to resolve the immediate crisis by allowing Puerto Rico to restructure its debt have been languishing in Congress; House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, introduced draft legislation in March, but it hasn’t gone anywhere.

• Restructuring has no costs for taxpayers. The burden falls on creditors, who will be paid less than the face value of the bonds they hold.

• Without a restructuring, a taxpayer-funded bailout is surely forthcom-

ing.

OK, that last one is a prediction, not a fact, but I’m very likely to be right about it. And that would be a transference to taxpayers of the costs of cleaning up this mess from creditors, including hedge funds that bought Puerto Rican debt at a steep discount a couple of years ago.

Let me explain. For years, the Puerto Rican economy has underperformed. Today, poverty and unemployment on the island are about 46 percent and 12 percent, respectively, and the population is shrinking as people jump ship for the mainland.

That has done long-term damage to revenue collection, and the government overborrowed to make up the difference.

The government is far from blameless, but the costs of the crisis are, as usual, falling on the people with the least means to avoid the pain, people who are American citizens. When such obviously unsustainable borrowing has occurred in other places that can’t dig their way out of their debt hole, such as Detroit or Stockton, California, they have declared bankruptcy and restructured their debt. That means a bankruptcy judge enforces “haircuts” on creditors who end up

with less than they were originally owed. In Detroit, for example, creditors got an average of about 60 cents on the dollar.

The problem is that Puerto Rico, as a commonwealth, does not have that option. That is why it will take legislation to allow a restructuring of the island’s debt. The bill before Congress “would create a federal oversight board with the power to approve or reject local budgets, and to approve plans for court-supervised debt restructuring.”

Now, here’s my punch line, telegraphed above, and it’s very simple: If we don’t do the restructuring, we will end up with a taxpayer-funded bailout.

I don’t know how large it would be, but I see no other possible outcome.

You may wonder: Why should the creditors get dinged and the taxpayers spared? Fair question, but the fact is that insolvency happens, and any IOU (i.e., bond) you purchase has default risk. In fact, such risk is priced in, with riskier debt paying higher yields, and, in the case of Puerto Rico, sold at a discount to hedge funds and other creditors (including pension funds) that think their hair looks fine, thank you.

Bottom line, I don’t think it’s

a stretch to recognize that buying Puerto Rican debt was a risky move.

Although defaults are rare in the muni market – only 0.14 percent of munis default within 10 years – the Puerto Rican economy cannot generate anything like the growth needed to service its debt. Creditors’ bets went bad, and the senseless quirk in the law that has no Chapter 9 mechanism for the commonwealth is the only reason we’re even arguing about them.

Why is a bailout the only alternative?

Because I don’t think the nation will let fellow Americans suffer the consequences of living in a failed state as the human costs become increasingly severe.

Yes, we are in a moment of considerable political upheaval, but this conclusion is bipartisan: The Obama administration strongly supports the restructuring bill, and Ryan has been doing his best to advance the legislation.

In response, a remarkable constellation of Republican officials and enablers have pronounced themselves unalterably opposed to the duly selected leader of their party.

“Never, ever, ever Trump,” tweeted Tim Miller, a former spokesman for Jeb Bush.

“With God as my witness,” GOP strategist Rick Wilson wrote, “I will never vote for Donald Trump.”

The stand for a set usually is a silver pedestal that supports a revolving tray with holes or holders for three to seven bottles or containers. It has a tall handle so it can be easily passed at the table. The sets held an assortment of condiments used on salads - perhaps oil, vinegars, salt, pepper, and dry or wet mustard. A unique silver cruet set made by Tiffany & Co. was offered for sale by S.J. Shrubsole, a New York shop, at the 2016 Winter Antiques show in New York. The stand was made to look like a circular railroad track with seven railroad cars that rotated around the handle. The engraving simulated wooden siding and had the initials “H, NH, & S, 69.” It most likely stood for New Haven, Hartford & Springfield Railroad. A stamped maker’s mark was stamped on the bottom dating it about 1853. It may have been made for a company executive.

Tiffany & Co. silver is high-priced today, and imaginative, unique antique silver also sells well.

The 14 1/2-inch-high piece was priced $37,500. *** Q: I have a copper shell casing dated 19181919 with the name “Verdun” and an eagle standing on a shield with a star on it. The words “Nevers France” are engraved underneath. I was wondering if you could give me any idea what something like this is worth and if you know of anyone who would be interested in buying it.

A: You have a piece of trench art from World War I. Trench art is a form of folk art made by soldiers. Soldiers cut and decorated metal casings from bullets and mortar shells to form useful objects or souvenirs. The Battle of Verdun was the longest battles in the war and raged from February to December 1916. There was a large military population at camps and hospitals in the area around Nevers. Some of those injured at Verdun were taken to hospitals in Nevers. Your copper shell may have been made to commemorate the battle and the time spent in Nevers recovering from wounds sustained there or in a future battle. Or, a soldier stationed at Nevers from 1918 to 1919 might have made this from a shell casing found at Verdun. Trench art is popular and your Verdun casing is worth about $200. *** Q: Is there significant value for 12 small soup bowls with handles on both sides and matching saucers? They’re marked with the words “Baronet, Made in Bohemia” around a circle with the letters

Some sources say Baronet is the maker, while others say it’s a line made by Bohemia Ceramic Works, a company that worked in Neurohlau, Bohemia (now Nova Role, Czech Republic) from 1921 to 1945. The initials “F & B” probably are those of Fisher, Bruce & Co., an importer in Philadelphia that began working under that name in 1890. The value of your cream soup bowls and saucers depends on the pattern. Prices range from $6 to $50 for a cream soup and saucer. *** Q: I’m looking for some information on a Westmoreland milk glass 8-inch plate that is heartshaped. It’s hand-painted with the Roses and Bows pattern.

A: Westmoreland Glass Co. of Grapeville, Pa., made glass from 1889 to 1984. Roses and Bows, which the company called decoration No. 32, was one of Westmoreland’s most popular hand painted decorations. It was made from the 1950s until 1984, usually with two roses. Roses and Bows with only one rose was made beginning in the 1970s.

Some smaller items have roses but no bows.

Reproductions have been made. A heart-shaped milk glass plate decorated with Roses and Bows sells for $20-$30. *** Q: In 1957, I won a contest sponsored by Foster Parents Plan, Seventeen Magazine, and the United Nations Children’s Fund. One of the three judges was Eleanor Roosevelt. I was awarded a trip to Manhattan where I met many famous people, including Dag Hammarskjold and Ed Sullivan, and got their autographs. I kept a diary and saved memorabilia and photographs. My question is this: Are there collectors that would be interested in this type of memorabilia?

A: Your diary, photographs and other memorabilia probably would not interest collectors because it has little historic value, but there might be some interest in the autographs. It depends how famous the person is, how rare the autograph is and the condition. Most celebrities signed hundreds or thousands of autographs and those autographs are not valuable. Signatures on important documents or letters are worth more than an autograph by itself.

A signature on a handwritten letter is usually worth more than an autograph on a photograph or typed letter. Autographs on a piece of paper or card are worth the least. If you think you have an autograph from an important person who rarely signed autographs, you should contact an auction house or gallery that holds sales of autographs. ***

Recent report from NIU opens door to possibly eliminating cheerleading

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Holly Vizzaccero called being a part of the Northern Illinois cheerleading team one of the best experiences of her life.

However, a recent report regarding the finances of the university has left the door open to put cheerleading on the chopping block down the road. In the 2015-16 Program Prioritization report, which featured recommendations from a 21-person task force on ways to better use resources of programs at the university, it warned NIU athletics to do a better job at being more self-sus-

taining – relying less on the 2 percent of funding it gets from the university and the money it gets from student fees.

“If that is not possible,” the report said about athletics being more self-sustaining, “then the department should consider eliminating cheerleading. Unlike some other programs ... in the intercollegiate athletics department, cheerleading is not essential.”

The cheerleading team currently is without a coach after Heather Bennett resigned in April. However, NIU said that the paperwork has been filed to human resources to search for a replacement – which they expect to be

accepted. In the meantime, the cheerleading team put on three days of tryouts this past weekend, with Bennett lending a hand in the selection process.

Vizzaccero, who was the captain for the cheerleading’s co-ed team from April to December 2015, had high praise about her days on the squad – citing the ability to travel and competing at the National Cheerleading Association Collegiate Nationals in 2015 as highlights of her days as a Huskie.

“College cheerleading, hands down, has been one of the greatest experiences of my life,” said Vizzaccero, who graduated in December and now is working in Schaumburg. “I can

wholeheartedly say my incredible experience at NIU was almost completely because of the cheerleading program.”

However, Northern Illinois is quick to point out that the suggestions from the task force to either tweak or eliminate programs are just that – suggestions.

“Just because they are recommendations doesn’t mean that’s going to happen,” NIU spokesman Joe King said.

Continued from page 16 currently has a combined 17 athletic programs, and schools need at least 16 to keep their Football Bowl Subdivision status, which is something King emphasized that the university wants to maintain.

Cheerleading is not included in the 17 athletic programs; and while they are self-funded in terms of raising money for competitions, they do receive some money from the athletic department for apparel.

Because of Title IX, a federal law which mandates an equal proportion of male and female athletes, any sport that would be disbanded would be a male, nonrevenue program. Each of the men’s nonrevenue sports mentioned in the report – wrestling, golf, soccer, tennis and baseball – are told to have the athletic program become more self-sustaining, and each of them end in the same manner.

“If that is not possible, then the department should consider eliminating a male, nonrevenue sport,” it reads.

Of those five teams, only baseball has been disbanded in recent memory – not fielding a team from 1983 to 1990.

Soccer has had a program uninterrupted since 1962; wrestling has had its program since 1969-70; golf has had at least one letterman every year since 1960, except 1961; and tennis has had a least

Northern Illinois athletic director Sean Frazier addressed the issue of athletics being more self-sustaining in his recent newsletter to fans.

He said that the department’s fundraising event, the Victor E. Ball, raised more than $181,000 last year, and a new agreement with concessions and catering vendor Sodexo at the athletic facil-

ities earned them $710,000 in gross revenue in 2015 – adding that the Huskies already have surpassed that number this year.

He said that Northern Illinois hauled in nondonation revenue of around $1.2 million in 2015 and wants to grow that number. When it comes to money coming in through the Huskie Athletic Fund – which includes regular donations and premium area donations – it

has increased 41 percent from last year, bumping up the haul to $2,332,937.

“I am proud of the strides we have made toward financial sustainability, especially given outside factors on our campus, in our state and within college athletics that have affected our financial model over the past several years,” Frazier said in the newsletter.

Frazier would not comment on the matter to the Daily Chronicle.

Although the recommendations from the task force also called for the reduction, transformation and review (candidate to be phased out) of 142 out of the 236 administrative programs – which includes the athletic teams – King said that the group’s work is over and that any decision to ax a program would come from higher-up.

“Such a decision would come from senior leadership, but not until athletics has an opportunity to create and implement plans that they believe can meet the goal of greater self-sufficiency,” said King, who added that there is no timeline for when they would cut the program, if need be.

Cheerleading is not counted toward Title IX, which could leave it more vulnerable than other programs. But for Vizzaccero, it would be tough to see the school disband the program she grew to love.

“Without being a part of cheerleading,” she said, “my NIU experience wouldn’t have been nearly as rewarding as it was.”

Northern Illinois pitcher Alex Frenz emerged as the Huskies’ ace this season and was named the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year, the conference announced Tuesday.

Frenz also made second team allMAC, being one of five Huskies to be recognized by the conference.

Senior catcher Emily Naegele and junior first baseman Kayti Grable were named to the first team, while junior shortstop Kali Kossakowski and senior outfielder Caitlyn Warren joined Frenz on the second team.

After a rotating group of starting pitchers early in the season, Frenz eventually became the primary hurler for the Huskies. She currently is 14-6 overall with a 2.54 ERA in 154 1⁄3 innings on the season. During conference play, she lowered that ERA to 1.91 in 841⁄3 innings of work.

Against MAC teams, she is 6-4 with two saves and two shutouts.

While Frenz has been strong in the

nois record for homers in a single season. She leads the conference in home runs and RBIs, and she is slugging .876 on the season.

Grable, who won the conference Freshman of the Year award in 2013, has a slightly higher batting average than Naegele, leading the conference with a rate of .408 – to go along with seven homers and 49 RBIs. Naegele and Grable were both first team allMAC last season, as well.

Although Kossakowski doesn’t have the power of Naegele and Grable, she has been a standout table setter for the Huskies – leading the conference with 49 runs scored. She also is hitting .358, with 21 stolen bases on 25 attempts.

Home may not be Game 7 advantage for Stars The ASSOCIATED PRESS

DALLAS – Home ice belongs to the Dallas Stars for Game 7 of their second-round playoff series against the St. Louis Blues.

The advantage? Well, the visiting team has dominated so far.

“I have the benefit of the match at home,” Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. “I don’t know if that’s going to make any difference in the game, though.”

Dallas hosts Game 7 on Wednesday night (7 p.m., NBCSN) after avoiding elimination with a 3-2 win Monday at St. Louis. The Stars led, 3-0, in the first period and held on for the third consecutive victory in the series by the visiting team – and fourth overall.

“We’ve been able to put some good road games together, some simple road

games together,” Blues right wing Troy Brouwer said.

The Blues, who finished only two points behind Dallas in the regular-season standings for the Western Conference’s top seed, are 4-2 on the road this postseason and have already played a seven-game series. St. Louis won its first-round clincher at home, when Brouwer scored the Game 7 winner against the defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks.

“We obviously know the stage,” Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo said. “It’s going to be a little different now that we’re on the road, but I think overall, we know what the pressure is, we know what it’s going to be.”

Curry is first unanimous MVP, takes honor again

OAKLAND, Calif. – From the jaw-dropping half-court heaves that somehow sink through the net to the dazzling drives and zippy passes from every which way, Stephen Curry’s desire to keep getting better while always trying to entertain at every stop has the Golden State superstar being mentioned right along with the best ever, Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson.

On Tuesday, Curry accomplished something those former greats never did: He became the first unanimous NBA MVP, earning the award for the second straight season after leading the defending champion Warriors to a record-setting season.

“I never really set out to change the game. I never thought that would happen in my career,” Curry said. “What I wanted to do was just be myself. ... I know it inspires a lot of the next generation, a lot of people who love the game of basketball to value the skill of

it, value the fact that you can work every single day to get better. You’ve got to be able to put the time and the work.

That’s how I got here, that’s how I continue to get better every single day.

Curry is the 11th player in league history to be voted MVP in consecutive seasons and the first guard since Steve Nash in 2004-05 and 2005-06. Curry received 1,310 points from the 130 media voters from the U.S. and Canada.

“I couldn’t imagine anybody not voting him first, and yet there always seems to be somebody who has to stand out,” Coach of the Year Steve Kerr said.

Curry was followed in the vote by Kawhi Leonard of San Antonio, LeBron James of Cleveland and Oklahoma City teammates Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant. Curry’s teammate Draymond Green was seventh.

Nash, Golden State’s player development consultant, was on hand to congratulate Curry.

“It’s been weird, I haven’t had to say a word to him. It’s been the easiest job,” Nash said.

Curry is the first two-time winner in franchise history, and Wilt Chamberlain (1959-60) is the only other Warriors winner. After guiding Golden State to its first championship in 40 years, Curry & Co. took that success even further to finish with 73 regular-season wins to top the mark set by the 1995-96 Bulls team that went 72-10.

The other Western Conference semifinal series will also have a Game 7, with Nashville at San Jose on Thursday night.

With the only two-day break between games the Predators have had in the playoffs, they spent Tuesday resting. No game, no jumping on a plane as they have done every day since their first game this postseason on April 15.

Nashville beat the Sharks, 4-3, in overtime Monday night to stave off elimination. The Predators also went seven games in their first-round series against Anaheim.

Strasburg’s 2012 shutdown helped lead to $175M deal

WASHINGTON – So all these years later, it sure sounds as if Stephen Strasburg signed a $175 million, seven-year contract with the Washington Nationals precisely because of their decision to end his 2012 season before the playoffs – not despite it. “ A s a c o m p e titor, it was a very tough pill to swallow,” Strasburg said Tuesday about the much-debated shut- Stephen down to protect his Strasburg surgically repaired right elbow.

“But I think, at the end of the day, you have to look at what their intentions are. And I think their intentions are that it’s an investment, and they want me to be here pitching at a high level for a long time. Hopefully with this group of guys, we can have more opportunities to be in that spot again.”

At a news conference, Strasburg spoke of being comfortable in Washington – with his team and his family.

His 2-year-old daughter sat on mom’s lap in the front row during the proceedings, a white ribbon with a red curly “W’’ in the tot’s hair.

CFL’s Calgary picks NIU’s Brescacin Bowling Green in the 2013 Mid-American

Former Northern Illinois wide receiver Juwan Brescacin was selected Tuesday night by the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football Draft.

Brescacin, who is Canadian, was picked in the second round with the No. 15 pick.

The Stampeders finished last season 14-4 and were eliminated by the eventual Gray Cup champion Edmonton Eskimos.

Brescacin had 24 catches for 298 yards and a touchdown last season for the Huskies. As a junior, he hauled in 31 receptions for 445 yards and six touchdowns.

He had seven catches for 83 yards and a touchdown in the Huskies’ 51-17 win over

Conference Championship.

Calgary begins its regular season June 25 at British Columbia.

Rio spread: From halal to kosher to kimchee

RIO DE JANEIRO – The dining room for the athletes village at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics will be bigger than two football fields, and the kitchen being built in the same massive tent will be as large as one.

The setting hints at quite a spread when the games open in just under three months.

“We want to make sure when there is a medal or a record, part of that record also goes to our food team,” Marcello Cordeiro, Rio’s director of food and beverages, said in an interview with The Associated Press.

At its peak, the athletes village kitchen will prepare 60,000 meals daily, produced from daily shipments of 460,000 pounds of raw ingredients – all served up on 4 million biodegradable plates for 18,000 athletes, coaches and staff.

Diners will choose from five buffets: Brazilian, Asian, International, Pasta and Pizza, Halal and Kosher.

gious dietary laws. Koreans will even get spicy kimchee – the nation’s famous fermented cabbage, scallions and assorted vegetables – shipped directly from home.

And everyone can try 40 varieties of Brazil’s exotic fruits such as caju, acai, carambola, caqui, goiaba and maracuja, often squeezed into Brazil’s famously delicious juices (sucos in Portuguese).

The subsequent Paralympics will

offer the same variety, though the numbers will be smaller.

“We are confident our Brazilian food is going to be a success, we’ll make a bit more to be safe,” Cordeiro said.

“We are doing our best to bring the world to Brazil.”

He listed key ingredients of the basic Brazilian diet: rice, black beans, farofa (flour from toasted cassava often sprinkled on top of food) and meat. But

WADA to probe claims of Russian doping at Sochi The ASSOCIATED PRESS MONTREAL – The World-Anti Doping Agency is expanding its investigation into doping inside the Russian sports system after a whistleblower alleged four of the country’s gold medalists from the Sochi Olympics were on steroids.

WADA announced the long-calledfor expansion of the probe Tuesday, two days after Vitaly Stepanov told CBS’ “60 Minutes” that he had conversations with the former director of the Moscow anti-doping lab, who told him there was a “Sochi List” that included four champions from the 2014 Games.

“The claims made in the program offer real cause for concern, as they contain new allegations regarding attempts to subvert the anti-doping process at the Sochi Games,” WADA president Craig Reedie said.

Stepanov said the former lab director, Grigory Rodchenkov, told him that agents from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) acted as doping

control officers during the Olympics, which severely compromised the lab’s integrity.

Natalya Zhelanova, the anti-doping adviser to Russia’s sports minister, said the ministry would cooperate with any WADA investigation.

“Of course we’re disturbed by Stepanov’s statements, but he has no connection to anti-doping activity,” she told the R-Sport Agency. “I want to state that no one has heard this from Rodchenkov.”

After Stepanov and his wife, 800-meter runner Yulia, first revealed details of widespread cheating inside the Russian track program, WADA appointed an independent commission, headed by its former president, Dick Pound, to look into the corruption.

Among Pound’s conclusions was that it was hard to imagine track and field was the only corrupted sport in Russia. But the WADA mandate didn’t extend beyond track, and a bevy of athletes and anti-doping leaders pushed for WADA to look into other sports.

“Imagine you start eating at 10 a.m. and you finish 8 p.m.,” Cordeiro said.

“Everyone thinks that food-tasting is super-duper, but this is how you eat.”

He demonstrated, lifting a tiny sandwich slice up to his nose, one made of ham, mozzarella, cream cheese and lettuce. He checked for texture and presentation, and finally took a small bite. Next he graded the offering on a checklist.

“I’ll tell you the truth, I can’t stand the testing,” he said. “This means eating the whole day. Actually, not eating.

When we first encountered deep-fried, bourbon-soaked Twinkies, we were a little smitten. Until, that is, we realized we could do so much better.

Better as in ditching the highly processed snack cakes and substituting a truly amazing slab of homemade pound cake, all rich and dense and ready to sponge up some booze. Which is what we did next; we drizzled each slice with a generous glug of bourbon. And no need to use the good stuff here. Anything you’d consider using as a mixer will be fine.

An ample dose of butter to pan-fry our slices until nicely crisped and warmed doesn’t hurt their flavor, either.

Now all you have to do is serve – warm, please! – with fresh berries and whipped cream or ice cream. Take that, Twinkies.

Butter-Browned Bourbon-Basted Pound Cake Start to finish: 2 hours (30 minutes active) Servings: 12

4 whole eggs, room temperature

2 egg yolks, room temperature 1 tablespoon water 1 cup sugar 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature, plus more for pan frying 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon almond extract 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1¾ cup plus 2 tablespoons (8 ounces) all-purpose flour, sifted

3/4 cup bourbon Berries, to serve Whipped cream, to serve Heat the oven to 350 degrees F. Mist an 8-inch loaf pan with cooking spray, then line the bottom and up the 2 long sides with kitchen parchment.

In a small bowl, whisk together the whole eggs, egg yolks and water.

In a large bowl, use an electric mixer on medium-high to beat together the sugar, butter, vanilla and almond extracts, and the salt until very light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. While mixing, add the egg mixture, a couple tablespoons at a time, until well emulsified after each addition. The adding of the eggs should take about 5 minutes.

Working in 2 batches, fold in the flour gently but thoroughly until no

trace of the flour remains. Transfer to the prepared pan and spread to smooth the top. Gently tap the pan on the counter to release any air bubbles. Bake on the oven’s center rack for 55 to 65 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted at the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then turn out onto a rack to cool for another 20 minutes.

When the cake is mostly cool, slice the ends off, then slice the loaf into 12 generous 1/2-inch-thick slices. Brush both sides of each slice liberally with bourbon.

In a large skillet, melt a bit of butter over medium-high, swirling to thoroughly coat the bottom of the pan. Working in batches, fry the pound cake 3 to 4 slices at a time, for 3 to 4 minutes a side, or until toasty brown, adding additional butter between batches. Carefully transfer the toasted slices to a platter while you fry the remaining slices. Serve warm, with berries and whipped cream, if desired.

Leftovers can be cooled and kept in an airtight container for 3 days, gently rewarming in a skillet.

No need to be shy about reaching for prepared pie crusts

I am an unabashed fan of refrigerated pie crusts. I am certain the number of pies I would make if I only was allowed to make crust from scratch would be about 15 percent of my current pie output. And I know my friends and family would be very sad should that happen.

The refrigerated stuff is great. It just gets a quick roll on the counter, then with a quick fold-and-transfertechnique, it’s in the pan in a snap.

Couldn’t be easier.

This is the fastest, easiest apple tart I know how to make, but that’s not the impression it will leave on your guests.

For the tart: Butter, for the pan, plus 2 tablespoons chilled and cut into small pieces 1 refrigerated pie crust (1/2 of a 15-ounce package), room temperature 4 large cooking apples, such as McIntosh or Granny Smith, peeled, halved and cored 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon cornstarch 1/3 cup apricot or peach jam or preserves

Easy Apple Tart with Cinnamon Creme Fraiche

For the cinnamon creme fraiche: 3/4 cup creme fraiche 3 tablespoons powdered sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Heat the oven to 400 degrees F. Butter a 9-inch tart pan, preferably one with a removable bottom.

Very thinly slice the apple halves. A mandoline is best, but a knife is fine. In a large bowl, toss the apple slices with the lemon juice.

In a small bowl, combine the sugar, cinnamon and cornstarch. Add this mixture to the apples and toss to combine.

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pie crust to a little over 11-inches. Fold it into quarters so it looks like a triangle with a rounded edge. Transfer it into the prepared tart pan, with the point of the triangle in the middle of the pan, then unfold it so the pie crust lines the pan. Gently press the crust into and up the sides of the pan. Arrange the apples as artistically as you like in the tart shell, overlapping them slightly.

Place the jam in a small, microwave-safe bowl and heat in 15-second burst, stirring between, until melted and smooth. Brush the

melted jam over the tops of the apples. Dot the apples evenly with the butter. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the crust is firm and golden brown. Cool in the pan on a wire rack for about 20 minutes, then remove the outer edge of the pan, if possible, and finish cooling on the tart base on the wire rack.

When ready to serve, prepare the cinnamon creme fraiche. In a small bowl, whisk the creme fraiche with the powdered sugar and cinnamon until well blended and smooth.

Serve the tart slightly warm or at room temperature with a generous dollop of the cinnamon creme fraiche.

Air fryers deliver flavor with less fat

The Associated Press Todd English has a new – and unlikely – love: the air fryer.

“I was amazed at the quality of the way things came out,” English, a prolific and award-winning restaurateur and television chef, said in a recent interview. “And the versatility of it was something I also loved.”

Air fryers aren’t new, but the high-profile attention they have been getting is.

Which is all a bit surprising, given their as-seen-on-TV appeal. Unlike classic deepfry devices, air fryers don’t use kettles of oil to cook. Instead, they essentially are small, countertop versions of a convection oven.

They use a fan that constantly pushes super hot air around the food. This means they cook faster, deeper and – with almost no oil – crunchier than traditional appliances.

English has become so smitten with air fryers, he’s just released a cookbook dedicated to them, “The Air Fryer Cookbook.”

The book features recipes for everything from stuffed portobello mushroom and

spinach pizzas to sesame-ginger fried pork, as well as the more classic (and expected) French fries and chips.

He argues air fryers are a natural for home cooks, who generally love fried food but don’t know how to properly cook it using traditional oil methods. “Most people don’t know when to change the oil on a tabletop” deep fryer, nor do they know how to properly manage the temperature, he said.

Air fryers, English explains, correct for all of that. Many of his recipes use only cooking spray or breadcrumbs, while others typically call for just a tablespoon of oil. He said an air fryer can cook a dish in about 10 to 15 minutes, compared with 25 to 30 minutes in a regular oven.

“Simple, and the results are very close, if not an exact replica of fried food,” English said. But with far less fat.

Guy Crosby, a professor in the department of nutrition at Harvard’s School of Public Health, agreed air fryers can help cut back on the amount of fat used in cooking, but obviously are only as healthy as the foods that go in them.

Type “chicken recipe” into Google and watch as millions of suggestions line up, page after page, at your beck and call. There is no shortage of ways to cook our favorite bird. But often what I really want when I crave chicken is something that will comfort and soothe: a meal that is the equivalent of a good blanket, cup of tea or a bath of the perfect temperature. For me, this buttermilk chicken kadhi is that dish.

Kadhi is one of India’s most popular dishes, the taste of home for so many Indians. At its most basic, it is buttermilk or yoghurt spiced with fenugreek and turmeric, laced with green chilies, garlic and ginger, then bound together with chickpea flour.

The flour thickens the buttermilk, turning it into a silky, deeply savory and addictive sauce.

It is a frugal dish, which is much cherished. And even though it never graced the boilerplate Indian restaurant menus around the world, it is cooked weekly, if not daily, in our homes. Poaching chicken in the kadhi is not traditional (Google searches return nothing) but, since putting the two together, I have never looked back. As far as chicken recipes that hit the spot go, for flavor, speed and ease, this one is hard to beat.

1 teaspoon cumin seeds 20 fresh curry leaves 1½-inch chunk fresh ginger, grated 6 cloves garlic, crushed 2 green finger chilies, finely chopped 1½ tablespoons chickpea flour 1/2 teaspoon turmeric 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 quart buttermilk In a large skillet pan over medium-high, heat the oil. When hot, add the chicken and

brown until evenly golden on all sides, about 10 minutes. Remove the chicken from the pan and set aside.

Spoon off all but 2 tablespoons of the fat in the skillet. Return the skillet to medium heat, then add the mustard, fenugreek, cumin and curry leaves.

Allow to sizzle for 1 minute, then add the ginger, garlic and chilies and cook for a few minutes, or until soft and golden.

Reduce the heat to low and add the chickpea flour, turmeric and salt. Mix and slowly

whisk in the buttermilk. Bring the buttermilk up to a very gentle simmer, then return the chicken to the skillet. Coat with the sauce, then cover and cook for 30 minutes, or until the chicken is soft and cooked through.

fashion and a member of the onion family in one sentence is just weird. I also think the flavor is fantastic, and I love that you can use the whole thing, stem to stern.

So, I will let the foodies duke it out.

I will just continue to prod my children into the trees and derive a perfect shiver of pleasure from cooking with something we pulled up from the ground and didn’t even plant.

On the surface, ramps are a lovely harbinger of spring, wild leeks that are unable to be cultivated, hence part of their mystique (think truffles).

They also are one of the first vegetables to appear in farmers markets and on chefs’ menus after a winter of tubers and citrus.

Add the ramps and saute for 10 minutes, or until very tender. Set aside.

Once the ramps are cooked, in a food processor combine a little more than half of the ramps, the remaining 1/2 cup of olive oil, the vinegar, honey, Dijon, salt and pepper. Puree until smooth.

In a large bowl combine the cooked ramps, cooked and cooled pasta, vinaigrette, chicken, olives and basil. Toss well to combine thoroughly.

• Physical activity: People who used online programs boosted their physical activity more than those who didn’t. But there’s not enough research to show whether wearing a device to monitor physical activity actually helps you move more. My bet is it will. I am impressed by how many people – patients, friends and colleagues – tell me they check their smartphones to see how many steps they’ve taken in a day.

• Smoking cessation: mHealth apps used together with a traditional quit-smoking program may help smokers kick the habit. But the vast majority (about 90 percent) of people using these apps still fail to quit smoking after six months. My bet is mHealth apps, when used as part of a quit-smoking program that includes a community of other people also trying to quit, will prove to be useful.

And mHealth technologies for improving blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes?

There’s little or no available evidence so far about their effectiveness.

And what about sensors that continuously monitor our bodies and send the information to computers used by our doctors? Too early to tell.

Mobile health technology still is in its infancy. Some applications will prove ineffective. But I’ll bet such technology is a central part of the medical care system within 10 years – and will improve our health.

Dear Dr. K: There are so many health-oriented apps for mobile devices these days. But is there any evidence they actually work?

Dear Reader: The number of mobile device health-related apps has exploded in recent years. The most popular ones monitor physical activity. Others deliver helpful reminders or information through text messages.

Various apps aim to help you lose weight, monitor your blood pressure, manage your diabetes or quit smoking.

When you first start using them, the novelty of entering and tracking information can be very engaging. But keeping up that behavior over the long haul can be a challenge. So, can using these apps really make a difference?

Research is starting to weigh in. One study, published in 2015, looked at whether getting texts about lifestyle changes helped to boost heart health. The researchers enrolled 700 people with heart disease. Half were randomly assigned to receive four text messages each week, in addition to their standard care. The texts were semi-personalized. They encouraged participants to exercise more, eat less salt and make other heart-healthy lifestyle changes. The other study subjects received only usual care.

The study lasted six months. By the end, people who got the text messages had reduced their bad cholesterol, blood pressure and weight compared to those who didn’t get text messages.

The American Heart Association recently reviewed 69 studies that evaluated how mobile health (mHealth) technology affects heart disease risk factors. Here’s what they found: • Weight loss: People who used weight-loss apps or mHealth tools plus a comprehensive weight-loss program were more successful over the short term compared with people who tried to lose weight on their own. But

How can my husband gently communicate this is affecting Claude’s job performance and driving everyone batty? Ian is afraid if he complains to the supervisor, his friend will feel betrayed. – Overloaded In Alabama Dear Overloaded: The matter should be brought to the attention of their supervisor so the supervisor can handle it before it becomes a morale problem. What’s going on is unprofessional and unfair to the other team members.

The supervisor should tell Ian’s besotted friend the time he’s spending messaging his bride has increased the workload on everyone else, the honeymoon is over and he needs to get his mind back on the tasks at hand.

North’s two-spade response was a transfer to clubs. His three-spade rebid indicated a singleton (or void) in that suit. (With four spades and long clubs, North would have responded two clubs, Stayman.) South was torn at this point. Perhaps they had nine instant winners for three no-trump, but his single spade stopper was worrying, and his controls (three aces and one king) were great for a high-level club contract if partner had a solid or semisolid suit.

Here, if South had bid three notrump, he would have gone down, assuming West led the spade queen.

When South actually bid four clubs, North settled for game with his minimum.

West led the heart jack. South won with his ace and ran the club nine, losing to East’s jack. Back came a heart to dummy’s queen. Declarer crossed to his hand with a diamond, then led his second trump. When West played low, should South have called for dummy’s eight or king?

The percentage play was the eight. If East had the club queen-jack, he might have won trick two with either honor. But with the ace-jack, he had no choice. Declarer should assume East’s play was forced.
