RIDGEDALE, Mo. – Instead of panicking, Johnny Morris saw an adventure worth digging into when a massive sinkhole swallowed tons of earth at his golf course in the Missouri Ozarks.

Experts urged the 68-year-old founder of outdoors megastore Bass Pro Shops to fill the hole at Top of the Rock Golf Course near Branson with clay and boulders and move on. But Morris has long been a cave enthusiast – even discovering one with spectacular formations two decades ago – and was intrigued by the possibility that an unknown cave system lay underneath.

To the self-made billionaire, unlocking a natural mystery by burrowing further underground is worth it, no matter the cost. Morris has long seen opportunity in unexpected places, and his instincts are seemingly good: Forbes lists him as the world’s 397th wealthiest person with an estimated net worth of $4.4 billion.

“People say I’m crazy but I’m happy about every nickel we’ve spent down here,” said Morris, who declined to say how much exactly.

Morris spent as much time fishing as study-

ing in his college years. Eventually, he collected the best fishing tackle he could find from around the U.S. and sold it, along with homemade bait, from his dad’s Brown Derby Liquor store in Springfield, Missouri. He quickly developed a following in the Ozarks region – its lakes and rich streams a haven for anglers – created the Bass Pro Shop Catalog in 1974 and opened the first of his now 98 stores in Springfield seven years later.

On a cold day in 1993, steam hung like smoke at the entrance of his new find as the warm cave air mixed with the January chill. He ventured inside with Jack Herschend, a fellow cave enthusiast whose family owns Silver Dollar City in Branson and other theme parks.

“Man, I was so excited to be potentially the first person ever in that cave,” Morris said of the cave on a property about a half-mile away from where the sinkhole emerged.

Morris dubbed it “John L’s Cave” – his middle initial is L – and a National Geographic photographer went inside and described it as “an underground chapel.”

“It’s a beautiful, pristine cave,” Morris said.

“Just magical in there.”

Second annual ARTigras is an NIU-DeKalb community event

DeKALB – Danielle Gross of Rockford, a freshman art major at Northern Illinois University, hasn’t participated in a parade since she was a young girl in Girl Scouts.

On Saturday, Gross wore a hat and costume based on an Ellen Jewett octopus sculpture and was one of the 18 students in Art 103: 3-D Foundation who marched in the ARTigras arts parade in DeKalb.

The parade was part of the second annual ARTigras, a two-day celebration of the arts presented by NIU and the city of DeKalb.

The “March to Bourbon Street” event Friday featured food, live music, artwork and dancing by Dance Dimension of DeKalb. The ARTigras arts parade Saturday started at the intersections of Third and Locust streets in DeKalb and ended at a post-parade party the NIU School of Art and Design parking lot.

Lee Sido, the professor of Art 103, had his students create hats based on modern art sculptures and participate in the parade. “The Mad Hatters” were one of the 16 groups from NIU and the community marching in the parade. Sido’s class won the parade’s Most Creative award.

“Art touches every aspect of daily life, but you may not realize it,” Sido said. “From design and how things are made, every aspect is based on art and design. Artists tend to work individually and alone, so it’s important to have an event like this to celebrate the arts and involve the community.”

The post-parade party featured live music, vendor booths, food and free arts and crafts, including beaded bracelets, Mardi Gras masks, sidewalk chalk, face painting and caricatures.

ARTigras co-founder and NIU first lady Dana Stover was one of the parade’s judges and helped organize the event.

“DeKalb is a vibrant town, and ARTigras brings the university and DeKalb communities together,” Stover said. “It’s a way to showcase dance, music and artistic talents and passions.”

At 7:30 p.m., the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra performed at NIU’s Boutell Memorial Concert Hall, and the Stage Coach Players performed “The Laramie Project,” at their theater.

Ellen Andersen, the director of special events at NIU’s president’s office, said this year’s ARTigras was a success.

“We hope that, every year, ARTigras grows and that it can become a full-weekend festival of musical, visual, performing and every type of art,” Andersen said.

Clearing a path to recovery for others

Shaw Media Correspondent DeKALB – Ty Counsil leaned against his car in a sweaty blue compression shirt after finishing a 5K run in just under 29 minutes Saturday – three milestones for a program he said changed his life for the better.

Counsil was one of more than 50 people who participated in the DeKalb County Drug Court CLEAN (Choosing Life and Ending Abuse Now) Program’s first Recovery Run. The event was created to raise funds for and spread awareness of addiction, said Drug and DUI Court coordinator Mike Douglas.

The CLEAN Program is a 12- to 18-month treatment program for adult addicts who face felony-level charges.

DeKalb County Drug Court participant lent drug-related offenses. The route swooped around Hopkins Park to a finish line on the other side of a Kishwaukee River bridge.

“This side of life is a way better side of life,” said Counsil, who joined

the CLEAN Program in February after he was caught with a controlled substance.

Counsil said the program was something he desperately needed because of alcohol and drug abuse.

“You definitely got to want [change], and once you get a grasp of that change, it’s definitely an eye-opener,” Counsil said. “There [are] millions of people out there dying … and excessive drug use is not a lifestyle to live anymore.”

There were nine drug overdoses reported in 2015 in DeKalb, compared with five in 2014 and two in 2013, according to the DeKalb Police Department’s 2015 Annual Report.

More than 17,000 people in the U.S. died from illicit drug use in 2014, compared with 14,775 deaths in 2013 and 11,641 deaths in 2011, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Addiction “has unfortunately been

viewed as a negative thing, that it’s a choice – when, in fact, there’s actually plenty of proof out there that it is, in fact, a disease,” Douglas said. “It’s not a choice. So if a person is inflicted with that, this is a good avenue to receive treatment and assistance for that disease.”

More than $1,000 was raised for the Drug Court, which has seen less criminal activity and drug use, and more advanced college degrees among graduates, compared with those who were not admitted since its creation in 2006, according to a 2012 study on the program.

“Drug Court works,” probation officer Serena Frost said. “It helps people get jobs, increase their financial stability, increase their relationships with the community. It helps integrate people back versus sending them to prison with addiction, mental illness.

[Prison] doesn’t work.”

Harold M. Olson, 70, of Sycamore died Thursday, May 5, 2016, at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb.

He was born Nov. 9, 1945, in DeKalb. The son of Fritz and Ethel (Johnson) Olson.

He married Wanda “Sue” McCall on July 18, 1970, in Sycamore. Harold was a farmer in rural Sycamore for many years.

He was an auctioneer and collector of antique shotguns, Aladdin lamps, clocks and many other items. He enjoyed going on barn tours, telling stories and displaying his many collectibles at the Steam and Power Show every year.

Survivors include his children, Dan Olson, Cynthia (Scott) Galto, Sarah Garman and Eric Olson; four grandchildren, Nathan and Christian Garman and Arianna and Kayden Galto; and one brother, Charles (Sue) Olson. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife in 2014.

Ronald D. Stone, 81, of Sycamore, Illinois, died Friday, May 6, 2016, in DeKalb.

Born Aug. 27, 1934, in DeKalb, the son of Herald and Frieda (Olson ) Stone, Ronald married Barbara Miller on March 5, 1955, at the Federated Church in Sycamore.

Ronald was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a member of the VFW in Sycamore, DeKalb -Sycamore

Vintage Auto Club, Illinois Association of Groundwater Professionals, and a former member of the Swedish Covenant Church in DeKalb.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; sons, Brad (Kim) Stone of Cortland, Roger (Marcy) Stone of Batavia; daughter-inlaw, Julie Stone of Sycamore; grandchildren, Brian, Katrina (fiancée Jeff Taylor), Kelsey (Collin) Coulter, Lynette, Shelby; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Guy; brothers, Herald, Albert, and James; and his parents.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 13, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb, with Pastor Sandi Graber of Rochelle officiating.

Burial will follow at Fairview Park Cemetery, DeKalb, with full military honors

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Maxine Honeywell has danced her way to what she believes to be one of the best opportunities a young danseuse could have.

Honeywell, a Clinton Rosette Middle School seventh-grader, has been selected to join an elite group of youth who will participate this summer in the Joffrey Academy of Dance’s international summer intensive program. The academy is the official school of renowned The Joffrey Ballet.

“I was really excited. I was really shocked,” Honeywell, 13, said when she learned she had been accepted to the five-week program. “It was like the first real summer program I ever auditioned for, so I didn’t really think I was going to get in.”

Starting June 20, Honeywell will take up residence in a Roosevelt University dorm in downtown Chicago and, for about eight hours each day, she and the other participants will receive dance instruction from members of the academy, she said.

Only 150 people nationally are chosen for the summer program, which is open to youth dancers age 12 and older deemed to be intermediate- and advanced-level ballet dancers.

They will learn more about ballet technique, pointe and other lessons, according to information on the dance company’s website.

Maxine’s dance journey, which now will include participating in The Joffrey Ballet academy, began when she was a toddler. She said that starting at age 2, she has been interested in ballet and taking lessons.

The aspiring ballerina said she also enjoys lyrical dance, tap and pointe.

But ballet is her bent.

She began dancing about a year ago at Dance Dimensions on Lincoln Highway in DeKalb.

STATE Lawmakers seek to limit phone-tracking technology

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Law enforcement departments’ powerful devices that mimic cell towers and track phone locations are raising privacy concerns and inspiring legislation to restrict how police can use the technology in criminal investigations.

Man charged in Alton bombing reportedly angry over drug deal

ALTON – Authorities said an Illinois man charged with triggering two small bombs in his van was angry over a botched drug deal.

Richard Lee Johnson of Bethalto is suspected of setting off the homemade pipe bombs in Alton in late April, authorities said.

Federal court documents reviewed by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch indicate that the 27-year-old Johnson allegedly threatened to blow up a woman’s home after she took $50 from him in exchange for pills she failed to provide.

The woman said she later saw Johnson outside her home igniting an explosive device as a warning.

The bill also would require police to delete data from people who are not subject to an investigation within three days and prohibit police from using data to investigate individuals who were not included in a search warrant.

Chicagoan at kitchen table dies after bullet pierces door

CHICAGO – Chicago police said a man sitting at his kitchen table was killed when a bullet pierced his front door and struck him in the head.

Fifty-eight-year-old Andres Rivera was pronounced dead about a half hour after he was shot at 8 p.m. Saturday on the city’s southwest side.

Police don’t believe Rivera was the intended target.

Police are investigating two other weekend shooting deaths. A 26-year-old man was pronounced dead Saturday night after he was found on the sidewalk on the city’s West Side. On Sunday, a 35-year-old man in a car traveling on North Lake Shore Drive was shot by someone in another vehicle.

Last week, Connecticut lawmakers sent the governor legislation that restricts the device’s use.

Amid the heightened scrutiny, authorities have cited instances in which the cell-tracking devices have been helpful. For example, Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Seth M. Stodder told a congressional committee in October that immigration officials used a Stingray to locate a 6-year-old girl who was being held hostage by smugglers in Arizona.

Neither man has been identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police said no arrests had been made in any of the cases.

Stretch of highway named for deputy killed in crash

SPRINGFIELD – A stretch of central Illinois highway will be designated as a memorial to a Tazewell County deputy who was killed in a traffic accident last year while responding to a domestic call.

Tazewell County sheriff’s Deputy Craig Whisenand was honored Thursday as part of an event in Springfield. A sheriff’s official said the designation of a stretch of Illinois Route 9 as Deputy Craig Whisenand Memorial Highway was approved Wednesday by the General Assembly, the Pekin Daily Times reported.

Whisenand, 44, was responding to a domestic disturbance call in August when his vehicle went off the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

New York City police have used the technology extensively – more than 1,000 times since 2008, according to data released in February by the New York Civil Liberties Union – and have captured suspects in rapes, robberies and killings.

Baltimore police have used the technology at about 4,300 times since 2007 and hit a legal snag last month when a Baltimore judge dismissed key evidence in a murder case because it was obtained by using a Stingray. The ruling came weeks after a Maryland appeals court issued an opinion in a separate case saying evidence obtained using a Stingray violated constitutional protections against unreasonable searches and seizures. Critics of the devices also worry that if there are no limits on how long the gathered data is stored, law enforcement can build databases that track individuals’ patterns of behavior, like where someone attends political meetings, what doctors they see or what churches they attend.

His wife, Steffany, was outside the Statehouse as officers marched during the 31st Annual Illinois Police Officers Memorial Day. The event “has been the most unbelievable experience,” she said.

“It’s nice to know that you aren’t alone and you have the support and love of the law enforcement community around you,” she added.

McHenry County sheriff’s Deputy Dwight Maness also was honored. He died in September, nearly a year after he was shot while responding to a domestic violence call.

In Springfield, among the families of fallen officers was Jack Bauer, whose nephew, Wyoming Police Chief William Bauer, died in 2010 in a crash.

The annual ceremony, Bauer said, helps with lasting grief.

“You can’t bottle it up,” Bauer said. “You have to get out and get it out of your system and

get with other people like this.”

Belleville Vietnam memorial is teen’s Eagle Scout project

BELLEVILLE – A Belleville East High School Boy Scout could see his project to create a local Vietnam veterans memorial dedicated by month’s end.

Neil Wegrzyn is a 17-year-old junior who has taken up the challenge as an Eagle Scout project.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported that Wegrzyn has gathered information on 15 men from the Belleville area killed in the Vietnam War. He raised $4,500 for a black granite monument on which their names will be engraved. It will be placed in Walnut Hill Cemetery.

The idea came to him during an eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C., where he saw the Vietnam Memorial. His will be a miniature of the one in the capital.

Wegrzyn hopes to have a ceremony on Memorial Day.

OREM, Utah – As the setting sun’s light flooded a meeting of Utah County Republicans, Melanie Sorensen described her concerns about her party’s presumptive presidential nominee.

First, she spoke about Donald Trump’s suggestion that he may violate party orthodoxy and back a minimum wage increase. Then, she addressed his tendency to take different sides of the same issue. Then, the image he projects to the world.

“I’m certainly a ‘Never Hillary’ person, but I may also be a ‘Never Trump’ person,” said Sorensen, 42, a homemaker who spends countless hours volunteering for the GOP. “It’s a nightmare. I’m living in a nightmare.”

Voters in this slice of deeply conservative Utah are experiencing an acute version of the political panic attack that’s gripped much of the GOP since Trump’s remaining rivals dropped out last week.

Utah County, 30 miles south of Salt Lake City, was never going to support Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. It’s home to Brigham

Young University, and 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney won 88 percent of its voters against President Barack Obama. But it’s also the conservative heart of Utah, whose voters were among the most resistant to Trump in the nominating contest.

The billionaire won only 14 percent of the votes at the Republican caucuses in March. Trump’s boastful, populist approach offends many in a deeply religious state that values humility, personal ethics and traditional conservative values.

“What’s more important to us is the life led, the character of the candidate for office,” said Robert Craig, 55, a businessman and another member of the Utah County party’s executive committee.

The way Utah’s Republicans grapple with Trump’s nomination may say a lot about his viability in November. No presidential nominee in recent decades has won the White House without overwhelming support from voters of his own party – typically 90 percent of them or more – but the GOP is badly splintered over Trump.

U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., set off a firestorm last week when he

said Trump had not yet earned his endorsement. The last two GOP presidents – George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush – said they wouldn’t attend the party’s July convention, where Trump awaits the nomination.

Some Utah Republicans are grudgingly lining up behind Trump. U.S. Rep. Chris Stewart, who called Trump “our Mussolini” in March, now calls for party unity.

“While Mr. Trump wasn’t my first choice, we must move forward and unite to defeat Hillary Clinton,” he said.

Prisons must handle solitary with care Illinois Corrections Department officials are well-advised to review complaints about excessive solitary confinement and institute safeguards to prevent abuses.

Testimony before an Illinois legislative committee recently raised concerns about the extent to which prison inmates are subjected to solitary confinement for rules infractions.

It’s impossible to say whether the critics or defenders of the confinement policy are correct.

But it seems obvious that such a penalty not only is harsh but can be excessively imposed and that thorough institutional oversight is required to prevent abuses.

A federal lawsuit challenging the state’s solitary confinement policy was filed last year in federal court.

This year, prison inmate advocates are taking their grievances to the General Assembly in the hopes of gaining a legislative solution.

State Rep. LaShawn Ford, a Chicago Democrat, has proposed legislation that would limit solitary confinement to no more than five consecutive days or five total days during a 150-day period.

Corrections Department officials naturally object to the proposal, suggesting a measure of that nature would create severe disciplinary problems that would pose a threat to prison employees.

Holding an inmate in solitary confinement, particularly for extended periods, is a nasty business – sometimes necessary, perhaps, but potentially ripe for abuse.

The question is: how much is enough?

The state devoted an entire facility – the super-maximum facility in Tamms – solely to holding its most dangerous prisoners in isolation: 23 hours a day in a single cell with one hour a day for exercise and recreation.

The goal was to put the worst of the worst out of business by isolating them and limiting their contact with fellow inmates and prison employees.

The super-maximum facility in Littleton, Colorado, is a federal version of what the state had in Tamms.

Pressured by prisoner advocates, former Gov. Pat Quinn closed Tamms for humanitarian reasons, although he never publicly admitted that was his reason.

Now, prisoner advocates are taking aim at solitary confinement as it is practiced throughout the rest of the state’s prison system.

Federal and state legislators are in the midst of taking a second look at incarceration policies, the concern being that they are harsh to the point of being counterproductive.

The issue of solitary confinement naturally is part of that review.

It would be a mistake to lean too hard in the direction of the kind of policy Ford has proposed or in support of what some assert is an abusive status quo.

But a policy that can be so easily abused must be exercised with the greatest of care that includes safeguards aimed at preventing unnecessary isolation.

Prisons are not pleasant places, largely owed to the kind of people confined there.

But there’s nothing to be gained – and, indeed, something to be lost – by subjecting inmates to worse treatment than what the law, prison rules and common sense require.

If they earn their time – even extended time – in isolation, so be it.

If not, holding inmates in isolation is unacceptable.

Cruz also one-upped him on Crooked Hillary by drawing the grim picture of her “tossing and turning in her jail cell.” He took a whack at the current first lady with her leafy vegetables, promising to restore French fries to school cafeterias once he does away with Obamacare.

What dominated on the last day of campaigning in Indiana – and, as it turned out, the final hours of the Cruz candidacy – wasn’t his speeches. Instead, it was an encounter he didn’t have to have. With cameras rolling, Cruz crossed the street after an event to confront a dozen Trump supporters – some of whom also appeared to have high-level training in stand-up comedy. When Cruz said, “I will tell you this, sir, America is a better country,” his target was right back at him “Without you.” When Cruz said, “And a question that everyone here should ask is …” another interjected, “Are you Canadian?”

This went on for an eternity, or maybe only five minutes. It was of a piece with going negative on a 10-year old for speaking up at an event. Cruz said he deserved a spanking like his kids would get. Suburban helicopter moms love that kind of talk. The exchange with the Trump supporters provided a vivid illustration of the reasons the conservatives Cruz was supposed to consolidate found him almost as unbearable as his colleagues: His utter conviction that he is smart and you are dumb, possessed of perfect debating skills and chosen

by God to triumph over mere mortals.

In the end, even Cruz had to admit that it was over. And probably not a moment too soon. Republican delegates had begun to say they had always meant “Never Hillary” not “Never Trump.”

What an unhappy choice Republicans had to make. As much as the party wanted an alternative to Trump – preferring to be poisoned rather than shot – after a sustained look at Cruz they preferred the candidate with the highest negatives in history to the smug, sour, self-absorbed, dangerously ambitious senator.

Still such an outright rejection must hurt.

Even the devil has feelings.

Any political party that hoped to grow with the modern world would have sought to reassure its voters, to help them adapt as black Americans demanded full equality, as women assumed positions of leadership, as gay and lesbian Americans stepped out of the shadows. A political party that had its eye on attracting a broad base of younger voters would have tried to reassure its older constituents about immigration, reminding them that their ancestors, too, came here from other lands.

Instead, leading Republicans pandered to the fears and prejudices of their constituents.

They updated and refined the old Southern strategy to signal to their voters that the party remained skeptical of black Americans’ continuing fight for social justice. They played along as conservative media outlets, such as Fox News, fed GOP voters a steady diet of made-up “facts” and manufactured outrage.

Instead of trying to prepare their constituents for a more diverse country, GOP leaders caved when their voters balked at immigration reform. And Republican leaders helped to stoke the fires of mistrust and resentment of Obama, engaging in the most irresponsible tactics and outlandish rhetoric to sink his agenda. Along comes Trump, perfectly positioned to abandon the subtle dog whistles of past campaigns and engage in full-throated bigotry and misogyny. Despite his insistence that he can moderate his pitch for the general election, he’ll go after the Democratic nominee, likely Clinton, with the same unhinged and outrageous invective for which he is so well known.

He is the harvest, yielding its bitter fruit and poisoning the party of Abraham Lincoln.

Politicians rarely get sympathy from the public when they lose. Yet in no other line of work is so much put on the line, so publicly, for so long, with a portion of crow to be eaten cold every day. Then, in one instant, it’s over.

It’s enough to make a grown man cry.

Still, it’s hard to feel sorry for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who was forced to drop out of the presidential race after losing the Indiana Republican primary to Donald Trump last week. Cruz, after all, is the guy who was aptly described by John Boehner, the usually affable former speaker of the House, as “Lucifer in the flesh.” He’s a man who even his friends don’t like.

But it was almost possible to have sympathy for the devil as Cruz, time running out, rattled by protesters, disappointed by crowds, upstaged by the conservative talk-show host Glenn Beck and downsized by Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, nonetheless crisscrossed the state.

Despite polls showing he would lose, Cruz gave Indiana his all after getting the one-onone contest he insisted would allow him to take down Trump. At his last event before voting began, Cruz gave his full stemwinder – anyone who thinks Hillary Clinton yells hasn’t been to a Cruz speech – to an audience that filled about one-fifth of Exposition Hall at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Beck had warmed up the crowd, but maybe a little too warmly, as some in the audience left when he was done. Singin’ Carly Fiorina came on next. In vain. Cruz’s premature decision to name her vice president, like his pact to keep Gov. John Kasich out of Indiana, didn’t help.

A few hours earlier, and a few miles north, Trump had filled the neo-classical Carmel Center for the Performing Arts, to the rafters. The line in the wealthy suburb of Carmel formed at dawn; hundreds didn’t get in, about 2,000 did.

Trump had his usual fun at another’s expense. He mocked Fiorina for falling off a stage in Lafayette a day earlier (“I would have helped her,” Trump sniffed). He performed a medley of his greatest hits: Hillary is still crooked and is playing, badly, the “woman’s card.” China is raping us. The Mexicans are going to be paying for a beautiful wall to keep themselves out.

Cruz tried everything to impress establishment conservatives in Indiana: He talked more about economics than abortion. He re-created a scene, badly, from the basketball classic “Hoosiers,” while Trump drafted many of the state’s sports legends from legendary coach Bobby Knight to Notre Dame’s Digger Phelps.

The Texas senator got Pence’s endorsement, but it was so tepid it brought to mind a hostage tape. In an interview Monday, Pence told CNN’s Dana Bash he’d be just as happy if Trump got the nomination – with Cruz right beside him.

Toward the end of his long march through Indiana, Cruz had begun to borrow from the winner. He appropriated one of Trump’s sig-

There still are many establishment Republicans – from George H.W. Bush to Mitt Romney – who can’t quite believe it, who still cannot fathom their voters’ intentions or discern the follies and provocations that brought them to this unhappy place. They are deeply in denial, steeped in self-serving analyses that allow them to escape blame.

They should know better. For the last 50 or 60 years, prominent Republicans have fed the anti-government paranoia, fueled the fear and pandered to the prejudices that paved a path for Trump. He is the harvest they so recklessly sowed.

Just look back a few years to 2012, when Trump endorsed Romney for president. By then, The Donald already was a leader of the so-called birther movement, a collection of hysterics and crazies who insist President Barack Obama was not born in the United States. The birther movement is simply a way of rendering the president illegitimate, a usurper and a fraud.

It is stark racism animated by certain white voters’ revulsion to a black man as president of the United States.

Over the years, prominent Republicans haven’t responded much better to the frequent attacks on women from some in their ranks, especially women who presumed to act intelligent and outspoken in public. When Hillary Clinton was advertised as her husband’s partner during his presidency, she was met with ferocious and outlandish attacks. An Indiana Republican congressman named Dan Burton shot a watermelon in an effort to prove that she and her husband had murdered a White House lawyer, Vince Foster, who actually had committed suicide.

And so it has been through several decades, as the Republican Party has increasingly become the preserve of a contingent of aging white voters uncomfortable with social and cultural change, and fearful as a

Glidden Homestead opens for the 2016 season DAILY CHRONICLE

See the place that everyone is talking about and join in digging up the past. Glidden Homestead and Historical Center opens for the programming season and visitor tours of the site on Sunday, May 15. Members can preview the site on Saturday, May 14.

Visitors can see the ongoing archaeological excavation of Joseph Glidden’s 1870s brick barn and take a guided tour of the structure led by preservationist Roger Keys. Fun activities for children also will be available.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, Glidden Homestead members are invited to attend the preview of the 2016 season, “Digging Up the Past.” Saturday’s program will feature a talk by DeKalb County Community Gardens Director Dan Kenney and an early peek at the

DCCG/Glidden Homestead partnership plans for the heritage flower beds in the homestead’s front lawn.

On Sunday, from noon to 4 p.m., the public is welcome to Opening Day, Open Barn to see the new aspects of the Homestead’s 2016 season, tour the Joseph Glidden’s Home where barbed wire was invented, see a working blacksmith shop, and visit the 1870s brick barn being excavated by archaeologists. In addition, the restored prairie that is growing in a location near the barn for the first time in 170 years is being dedicated at 1 p.m. and all donors to the ongoing restoration project up to that point will be recognized at the dedication ceremony.

Glidden built the Glidden House Hotel in downtown DeKalb that opened in 1877. In June 1879, J.F. Glidden Publishing bought the DeKalb County Chronicle that had been started earlier that year. Glidden was mayor of DeKalb from 1881 to 1883.

A full season of programs highlighting “Digging Up the Past” continues at the Glidden Homestead in 2016.

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive distributed more than 70 million pounds of food in 2015 to 46.5 million people in the U.S., including 12 million children and 7 million seniors, according to the release.

Residents are asked to fill a bag with nonperishable goods and leave it by their mailboxes before delivery Saturday. Postal carriers in DeKalb, Malta, Cortland and Sycamore will pick up the donations when they deliver the mail and take them to the local food banks.

DeKalb Area Retirement Center – Oak Crest residents and volunteers will host a Huge Book Sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 14 in the Little Theater at Oak Crest.

Many categories of books will be available and are very reasonably priced. There will be hard cover as well as paperback books.

Running a history museum to be discussed at Brown Bag

Kishwaukee Valley Heritage Society and Museum, 622 Park Ave. in Genoa, will host a Brown Bag Lunch from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Terry Martin will present an educational display of DeKalb County Native American artifacts that spans cultures of the Paleo period from 10,000 B.C. through the Archaic, Woodland and Mississippian periods to 1700 A.D. Baez’s homer in 13th gives Cubs sweep of Nationals

Former Cubs manager Lou Piniella used to call the weird happenings at Wrigley Field “Cubbie occurrences.”

What does anyone call the goings on now?

“It’s crazy, isn’t it?” Current manager Joe Maddon said after the latest unlikely finish not only to a 13-inning game but a week of sweeping their closest National League competitors.

“One thing that sums it up – the guys were in it to the last drop.”

That drop was a walk-off home run

by Javier Baez off Washington Nationals reliever Blake Treinen (2-1), ending the marathon game with his first career walk-off homer for a 4-3 victory and seventh straight Cubs win.

Baez had been the last available man off the bench when he entered in the eighth to replace reliever Trevor Cahill, who had to bat for himself leading off the seventh so Maddon could save Baez for later.

The “crazy” thing was, Cahill singled to start the inning that saw the Cubs score two to tie the Nationals at 3.

Baez, who was appropriately mobbed at home plate after the near five-hour game. “The most important thing is we never give up. We had nobody on the bench and we still played hard. We’re never going to give up.

Their week of remarkable baseball showed that.

The 24-6 Cubs pulled off a three-game sweep of the Pirates in Pittsburgh to extend their National League Central lead. Then they returned home for a

four-game sweep of the Nationals, the NL East leaders led by another former Cubs skipper, Dusty Baker.

On a day when ace Jake Arrieta didn’t have his best command and lasted five innings, four relievers picked him up, pitching eight scoreless innings, with the victory going to Travis Wood (1-0.)

Maddon and Baker both called on 18 players each in a game that saw a combined 25 hits – and 34 stranded runners, 21 for the Nationals.

The 21 left on base was the most for the Nationals since leaving 18 in a game June 18, 1975, against the Mets.

“It’s been incredible,” Arrieta said.

“Guys pick each other up when the moment calls for it, and the bullpen picked us up today.”

Even on an off day for him, Arrieta saw his team win for the 20th straight time that he started a game – a franchise record.

In reaching the 24-6 mark overall, the Cubs have their best 30-game start to a season since doing it in 1907.

“We just played really good baseball the whole week,” said Anthony Rizzo (2-for-6), who has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games. “Today was icing on top.”

nally healthy, which has been big. Last year she was hurt all year with back issues, had appendicitis earlier in the year so had to recover from that. She’s had to battle back from a lot of different things, and it’s good to see that she’s been very consistent.”

Fischer has a chance at becoming the third Genoa-Kingston athlete from the Class of 2016 to play at the NCAA Division I level. Brady Huffman signed his letter of intent to play baseball at Illinois State, and Erika Hansel will play volleyball at Tulane.

Fischer will walk on to the track program at East Carolina next year.

“There are many this year, actually, and I’m proud to be one of them,” Fischer said. “We have a lot of amazing athletes there, and I’m proud to be one of them.”

Newport keeps up hot streak in DeKalb softball’s win

The Barbs (16-5) scored their run in the sixth, when Torrie Newport singled and Danielle Styles pinch ran for her.

McKenzie Riggs moved her over on a fielder’s choice and Abby Taylor brought her home with a single to left.

It was the third shutout in a row for Morgan Newport.

The Barbs are back in action with a

4:30 p.m. game today in Kaneland.

Odom shines for Spartans: Izzy Odom didn’t give up an earned run in a two-hit complete game as Sycamore beat Hampshire, 3-1.

Odom had six strikeouts in the win.

“It was nice to get Izzy a win out there today,” coach Jill Carpenter said. “We still need to clean things up on defense, but it was better than it’s been. Izzy did a great job hitting spots and keeping Hampshire’s top hitters off the bases.”

Kaneland pounded out 11 hits – all singles – in the first game, with eight starters collecting a hit. Jack Weigand had two hits and drove in two runs from the leadoff spot, and Preston Havis also added two hits and two RBIs. Colin Turner was 2 for 2 with a run and RBI. The

game was only five innings long, with Troy Moss pitching three innings for the win. He allowed one run, and it was unearned.

The second game was seven innings, and Oswego put up three in the bottom of the final frame for the win. Kaneland had taken a 8-6 lead in the sixth, but Ryan David allowed three earned runs on two hits and two walks to take the loss in 12⁄3 innings.

Kaneland pounded out 12 hits in the loss, including a 3 for 3, three RBI game from Will Ring. Luke Calabrese and Jacob Violett each had two hits and an RBI.

GENOA – For a stretch in the middle of this season it seemed as if every time Carly Fischer threw a discus, a Genoa-Kingston record fell.

Fischer added a pair of first-place finishes in her final meet at Genoa-Kingston on Saturday, clearing 37 feet in the shot put and 115 in the discus as the Cogs won their home meet.

“With discus, I had a pretty successful year, I’d say,” Fischer said. “Getting the 125 a couple meets ago and the school record was a big highlight. There’s been some bumps. I had appendicitis right before we started outdoor stuff, so that was a bit hard to come over.”

Fischer said her mark on Saturday was the first time in the outdoor season she hit 37, which has been her goal since coming back from the appendicitis.

She said her goals at the start of the season were to achieve the Genoa-Kingston record in both throwing events.

“I got one, now my goal is to get 130 for disc,” Fischer said. “My shot goal stays the same – to get at least 39-5 or something (for the school record).”

With her throws, Fischer said consistency has escaped her since coming back from her injury. But coach Barry Schmidt said consistency has been one of her big strengths as of late.

“She’s been very consistent the last couple weeks,” Schmidt said. “She’s fi-

White Sox defense finishes off sweep with 3-1 win

For a second straight day, a White Sox starter didn’t have his best stuff from the get-go, giving off the appearance he may be in for a long day.

Like Chris Sale the day before, Jose Quintana painted himself into a corner Sunday, giving up a lead-off double and a walk to seemingly put the Minnesota Twins in business.

But as become a regular occurrence, the Sox defense came to a starting pitcher’s aid and rescued him from certain trouble.

Enter center fielder Austin Jackson, who perfectly played a low-lining fly ball after the Twins put runners on first and second with no one out in the first.

Jackson made the catch and then took advantage of a Twins’ base-running mistake to get Quintana out of trouble en route to a 3-1 Sox victory at U.S. Cellular Field.

Jackson doubled off Eduardo Nunez, who surprisingly took off from second unaware that Jackson had a beat on a Miguel Sano’s fast-sinking liner. Jackson then made an easy throw to second, which ultimately allowed Quintana to escape unscathed.

“It was good for me, good for us,” Quintana said. “I’ll take it.”

After eluding a potentially troublesome start, Quintana locked in and pitched seven solid innings. The Sox left-hander improved to 5-1 on the season and scattered six hits and allowed only one run while striking out five.

Jackson, who turned in another defensive gem in the ninth, snapped a 1-1 tie in the fifth with an RBI double. The Sox added a run in the seventh inning when Avisail Garcia reached on a thirdstrike wild pitch and then scored on a Dioner Navarro RBI double that gave the Sox some breathing room.

After the shaky start, Quintana zeroed in and retired 10 straight hitters at one point and found a groove that didn’t appear to be there when the first two hitters he faced reached base.

That’s when Quintana started to battle with some help from his defense.

It certainly helped Quintana before Jackson aided closer David Robertson, who pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 10th save. With the Sox leading by two runs, lead-off hitter Oswaldo Arcia sent a fly ball into the right center gap. Jackson got a good jump on a ball that neither Ventura didn’t feel Jackson had a chance at flagging down and that Robertson worried might be heading out of the ballpark.

Instead, Jackson made a nifty running catch, allowing Robertson to close out the Twins.

As he rounded first base, Arcia tipped his helmet in Jackson’s direction, saluting a defensive gem that once again helped a Sox pitcher avoid trouble – just as Jackson had done for Quintana a few ours earlier.

Once again, Quintana’s words rang true for Robertson.

Good for me. Good for us.

And like with Quintana, Robertson was happy to have Austin Jackson come to his rescue.

“I wasn’t mad about it,” Robertson said. “I was definitely glad he caught it.”

Hot streak: Designated hitter Avisail Garcia extended his hit streak to a Sox season-best nine games on Sunday with a pair of hits and two runs scored. Garcia’s hot streak has come after battling a hamstring injury that led to Garcia feeling frustrated that he wasn’t able to contribute to the Sox. Garcia said he spent the off-time focusing on his mechanics, which has paid off in the form of the way he has been hitting of late.

Hedman and Bishop lead Lightning back to East final

TAMPA, Fla. – Victor Hedman and Ben Bishop lifted the Tampa Bay Lightning into the Eastern Conference final for the second straight year.

Hedman scored twice and Bishop stopped 28 shots Sunday, helping the defending conference champions beat the New York Islanders 4-0 and end their second-round playoff series in five games.

The Lightning advanced by winning four straight after dropping the series opener at home. They also eliminated Detroit in five games in the opening round, making them 2-0 in close-out situations this postseason.

“I think we learned last year we

had a couple of series where we had chances to close (opponents) out at home and we kind of let them slip,” Bishop said. “We really wanted to take pride in closing teams out this year.”

Hedman scored an unassisted goal from the slot at 13:49 of the first period, then beat Islanders goaltender Thomas Greiss again on a second-period power play that gave Tampa Bay a three-goal lead.

“Brutal. It’s hard to believe it’s over,” Islanders captain John Tavares said. “You put a lot into this and we didn’t accomplish what we set out to do.”

Nikita Kucherov and Brian Boyle also scored for the Lightning, who will face either the Pittsburgh Penguins or Washington Capitals in the East final.

The Penguins lead that series 3-2, with Game 6 Tuesday night in Pittsburgh.

“Back to back, it’s pretty impressive what our guys have done,” Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said. “Once you get there, you want to get back. I’m really impressed with our drive. We didn’t play perfect playoff games every time, but we’re getting contributions from everybody in the lineup. If you want to win, you need that.”

The 6-foot-7 Bishop earned his fifth career playoff shutout, fourth in the deciding game of a series. He blanked Detroit 1-0 in Game 5 to end that firstround matchup and won two Game 7s without allowing a goal to help Tampa Bay reach the Stanley Cup final last year.

The loss ended New York’s deepest

playoff run since 1993.

Tavares led the Islanders to a thrilling six-game victory over the Florida Panthers in the opening round. He had a goal and assist in New York’s only victory over Tampa Bay, but didn’t have a point in the last four games.

“It will sting for a long time, but you have to get over it,” said Greiss, who stopped 21 of 25 shots.

The series was much more competitive than the final result would suggest.

The Islanders let third-period leads slip away in Game 3 and 4 in Brooklyn. Kucherov had tying goals in both games before Boyle and Jason Garrison provided winning goals in overtime to thrust the Lightning into a 3-1 series lead.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist heads to Baltimore on Monday to prepare for the Preakness, where the undefeated colt could face up to 13 rivals including nine new shooters seeking to derail his Triple Crown bid.

Nyquist had been walked, bathed and returned to his stall at Churchill Downs by 6 a.m. Sunday, less than 12 hours after he won the Derby by 11⁄4 lengths and improved his record to 8-0. Trainer Doug O’Neill had already gone back to Southern California for a few days before returning east to rejoin his bay colt at Pimlico.

O’Neill told a track official that Nyquist was “doing great” and “looking bright-eyed” the morning after.

The colt is the first unbeaten Derby winner with eight victories since Majestic Prince in 1969.

He will put that record on the line in the 13⁄16-mile Preakness on May 21 against a mix of old and new rivals.

The field is limited to 14 horses.

Derby runner-up Exaggerator, who has lost all four meetings with Nyquist, and ninth-place finisher Lani, who was beaten 10 3⁄4 lengths, are expected to return in the Preakness. Also possible are third-place Derby finisher Gun Runner, who was beaten by 4 1⁄2 lengths, and Suddenbreakingnews, who was fifth.

Nyquist is expected to have a light training schedule between now and the Preakness.

“He’s way too fit already,” said Leandro Mora, O’Neill’s chief assistant. “I don’t think we’re going to push it as much as a few others. We found what he likes to do.”

Five of Nyquist’s eight wins have come in prestigious Grade 1 races.

His latest victory boosted his earnings to $4,954,200, which includes a $1 million bonus for winning the Florida Derby in his previous start.

The colt is the third straight Southern California-based horse to win the Derby, and the fourth in five years.

I’ll Have Another started the run.

Nyquist was the fourth consecutive wagering favorite to win, too.

SPORTS BRIEFS Love, James lead Cavs to another sweep over Hawks

ATLANTA – Kevin Love scored 27 points, LeBron James hit a huge shot with 39.2 seconds to go and the Cleveland Cavaliers finished off their second straight playoff sweep, beating the Atlanta Hawks, 100-99, Sunday to advance to the Eastern Conference finals.

The Hawks had one last chance after James missed a 3-pointer with the clock winding down. Atlanta got the rebound and put the ball in the hands of Dennis Schroder, who led the team with 21 points.

The speedy point guard drove into the lane but was surrounded by James and Tristan Thompson. Schroder slipped and James tied up the ball, forcing a huge mismatch of a jump ball with 2.8 seconds left.

With a 7-inch height advantage, James flicked the ball toward the sideline.

Paul Millsap tried to get off a desperation shot, but it was after the buzzer and didn’t go in anyway.

The Cavaliers opened the playoffs with four straight wins over Detroit and made short work of the Hawks as well in a series that mirrored last year’s conference finals.

In that one, the Hawks were the top seed but lost four straight to Cleveland.

This time, the Cavaliers were healthy, seeded No. 1 and simply too much for Atlanta down the stretch in three of their four wins. They improved to 12-0 against the Hawks in the postseason.

The Cavaliers will face the Miami-Toronto winner in the conference finals. Toronto leads, 2-1.

Hahn beats Castro in playoff to win Wells Fargo Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – James Hahn beat Roberto Castro with a par on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff Sunday in the Wells Fargo Championship to snap a three-month slump.

Hahn, who failed to make the cut in his previous eight tournaments and hadn’t shot a round in the 60s since February, made a 4-foot putt on the par-4 18th to win his second career PGA Tour title.

Castro’s tee shot on the playoff hole found the creek on the left side of the fairway, and his third shot landed in a spectator’s shoe on the side of the green, leading to a bogey.

Hahn bogeyed the 18th in regulation for a 2-under 70, and Castro had a 71 to finish at 9 under, one shot ahead of Justin Rose (71). Hahn also won the 2015 Northern Trust Open at Riviera.

Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson both shot 66 to tie for fourth at 7 under with third-round leader Rickie Fowler (74) and Andrew Loupe (71).

Castro broke a tie when he rolled in a birdie putt from 6 feet on the 15th hole to get to 11 under. But he quickly gave the lead up with bogeys at 16 and 17.

That gave Hahn a one-shot lead, but Hahn rolled a 7-foot putt past the hole and took a bogey on 18.

Castro, playing with Fowler in the group behind Hahn, got up-and-down from the rough on the right side of the fairway on 18 and went on to make a 6-foot par putt to force the playoff.

Don’t trust immunity boosters Dear Dr. K: I guess everyone wants a strong immune system. But is there anything to the claims of products that advertise that they boost immunity?

Dear Reader: In a word, no. Our immune system does a remarkable job of protecting us from bacteria, viruses and other microbes. That’s good, because they can cause disease, suffering, even death. It seems logical to want to give your immune system a boost.

The problem is “boosting your immune system” is a simplistic concept. In reality, our immune system is incredibly complex, composed of many different types of cells that make many different types of chemicals. To function well, the immune system requires balance and harmony. Think of it as an army: The actions of the soldiers need to be coordinated by the generals, who determine when and where to attack, as well as when to stop attacking.

You can’t “boost” all parts of the immune system at once, and you probably don’t want to. An overactive immune system is seen in major autoimmune diseases, such as Type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and lupus.

In autoimmune diseases, overactive parts of the immune system start attacking the body instead of defending it. Allergies are another example of an immune system that’s overactive. A little harmless pollen gets into your nose, for example, and the immune system overreacts. And you start sneezing and getting a runny nose that won’t quit.

There still is much researchers don’t know about the workings and interconnectedness of the immune response. We’ve got to understand how the immune system works better than we currently do to achieve the goal of boosting just the right

As for the many food products and packaged drinks that are labeled as “supporting immunity,” “boosting immunity” or providing a “defense” against germs? Rubbish!

Most of these products just contain vitamins and minerals people already get as part of a normal, healthy diet. Some of them have been shown to boost one small part of the immune system, in a laboratory dish. That’s not proof they will help you fight off infections any better.

My colleague Dr. Michael Starnbach, a professor of microbiology and medical genetics at Harvard Medical School, feels strongly that when it comes to products that claim to boost immunity, there’s no truth in advertising. As he says, there’s simply no evidence consuming these products will translate into better immune function. And without that evidence, the packaging claims are just a marketing ploy. Eating or drinking those “immune boosting” foods won’t help you and may lead you to consume more calories than you need.

It’s not silly to want to find a way to help the immune system do a better job of defending us from foreign microbes, and I hope research can teach us how to do this.

However, we just don’t have enough information yet to make this a reality.

boyfriend of 5½ years died unexpectedly. Like so many other Americans, he didn’t have life insurance or any money to cover his funeral. For the last 2½ years I provided the primary financial support when he came and lived with me.

His mother made the decisions about the casket and service. She asked that money instead of flowers be given to help pay for the cost of the funeral. About $4,000 still is owed. She now says the remaining cost should be divided between her, her ex-husband and me.

I don’t think I should be obligated to assume a third of the funeral costs. If I had been married to him, the situation would be different. I have friends and family who agree with me and others who don’t. If I tell his mother it isn’t my responsibility to pay, she and other family members may never speak to me again. With four trumps, you rarely look for a ruff. But here, after East signaled with the diamond two at trick one, West shifted to his singleton heart. (Yes, a club switch would have been best, but that was nearly impossible to find.) East won and carefully returned the heart five, his lowest heart being a suit-preference signal for clubs.

At the table, West ruffed and tried to cash the diamond king. South ruffed, drew trumps, and coasted home.
