Unusual money can be fun – or dangerous POLL I am the guy with the weird money.

Local bank tellers know people like me: I’m the guy who walks in and asks if they have any $2 bills, or dollar coins, either the gold ones with pictures of the U.S. presidents on them, or the big silver dollars with President Eisenhower’s profile on them. (I think we need to stop printing $1 bills – they’re practically worthless today.)

It is fun to pay people with money like that – something they don’t see every day. I enjoy the look on their face as it takes them a minute to process what exactly it is this random customer is trying to pass off as legal tender.

I also like to leave $2 bills as tips, to pass them along to somebody else, keep them circulating. I’m told the tooth fairy also thinks that $2 bills are fair trade for a lost tooth sometimes.

Some people think they’re good luck.

money after she tried to use a $2 bill to buy chicken tenders at her middle school cafeteria. They took her to the school district police (apparently in Texas, school districts have their own police forces).

The school district cops apparently had to go first to a store where the bill was given as change and finally to a bank to authenticate the bill, which had been issued in the 1950s.

Personally, I’d have tried to keep a bill so unique, rather than spend it on chicken nuggets.

But then, I like weird money.

​ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A video game that allowed players to zap marching aliens with dot lasers and another that gave them flamethrowers and put them in the driver’s seat in a violent 3-D world are among six games inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame.

“Space Invaders” and “Grand Theft Auto III,” along with “The Oregon Trail,” ‘’Sonic the Hedgehog,” ‘’The Legend of Zelda” and “The Sims,” were honored Thursday for their influence on gaming and pop culture at the hall inside The Strong museum in Rochester.

“Space Invaders” wasn’t the first shooter game when it was introduced in Japan in 1978, but it spurred many imitators and a craze for arcade games, said Jeremy Saucier, assistant director of The Strong’s Internation-

al Center for the History of Electronic Games.

A virtual universe away, “Grand Theft Auto III” armed players with flamethrowers and assault rifles.

“By providing players with a license to do virtually anything they wanted to do on foot or behind the wheel, ‘Grand Theft Auto III’ renewed debates about the role of games and violence in society while it signaled video games aren’t just for kids,” Saucier said.

The title sold 14.5 million copies by 2008.

The hall of fame inductees were chosen from among 15 finalists culled from thousands of nominations from around the world. Contenders that missed the final cut were: “John Madden Football,” ‘’Elite,” ‘’Final Fantasy,” ‘’Minecraft,” ‘’Nurburgring,” ‘’Pokemon Red and Green,” ‘’Sid Meier’s Civilization,” ‘’Street Fighter II” and “Tomb Raider.”

County school districts butt heads on school facility sales tax

By KATIE SMITH ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Five school districts representing the majority of students in the county would like to move forward with a proposal to add 1 percentage point to DeKalb County’s sales tax rate and generate millions for capital improvements and bond payments.

DeKalb School District 428, the county’s largest, hopes to use the money to stave off a looming spike in property taxes. The school district issued four referendum-approved bonds in pieces between 2008 and 2011 that totaled $110 million to finance, repurpose and renovate the city’s schools.

“We would be using the money to pay down our bond debts, and by paying down our bond debts, it would offer property tax relief,” District 428 Superintendent Doug Moeller said.

The districts in favor of the tax – District 428, Genoa-Kingston School District 424, Sandwich School District 430, Somonauk School District 432 and Hiawatha School District 426 – serve more than 67 percent of students in DeKalb County. That would be enough to meet the legal threshold to put the proposal before voters by submitting a resolution to the Regional Board of Education.

But school board members in the county’s remaining three school districts – Sycamore School District 427, Hinckley-Big Rock School District 429 and Indian Creek School District 425 – oppose the tax. District 427 particularly objects because of fears that a sales tax increase would run United and American airlines affiliates out of the community.

“If the sales tax is raised, then those businesses will go away,” Sycamore board President Jim Dombek said at an April meeting. “And if those businesses go away, that will have an impact on the ability to collect sales tax, first of all ... and secondly, it results in the deficit that we throw into the county, or the city of Sycamore or the city of Genoa, as well.”

Both American and United have subsidiary offices in Sycamore and threatened to leave the county if the school facility tax makes it on the ballot, county officials have said. By buying their jet fuel in DeKalb County rather than Cook County, they pay a lower sales tax rate and also receive tens of millions in sales tax rebates through an agreement with Sycamore. In return, the city receives hundreds of thousands in revenue each year. The county government also re-

The companies’ tax rebate agreement with Sycamore is being challenged in court by the Regional Transportation Authority, which accused the airlines of setting up “sham offices” in Sycamore to dodge taxes.

County Board Vice Chairman Tracy Jones has been open about being personally opposed to the tax, and said he doesn’t think it will go over well with the community as a whole.

“We’re in danger of losing a significant amount of revenue,” Jones said. “I would be opposed to it, and I’m sure most of the County Board would probably be opposed to it also. If you look at these particular referendums over history, they have a really tough time being passed.

There are some counties who have tried to pass this four times and they’ve failed four times.”

But if the airlines already have threatened once to pull out, Sycamore should be prepared for them to eventually part ways with the city, especially when the

companies already are tied up in a legal battle, Moeller said. Because the tax would be countywide, money would be distributed to District 427 regardless of the school board’s support – or lack thereof, he said.

“They’re still going to get revenue from it,” Moeller said, “and at some point they’re going to have to explain to their taxpayers what they’re going to do with it.”

District 428 has plans to use use the tax to pay down bond debts that threaten to raise property taxes, Moeller said.

“In any community, school districts usually get the biggest portion of property tax [revenue],” Moeller said. “By using the 1 percent sales tax to pay down our bond debt, it would actually offer tax relief to our property owners and our homeowners.”

District 424 board members also favor the plan, although they have not voted on the matter yet, Superintendent Joe Burgess said. If approved, the school district would use the money to chip away at an anticipated $900,000 deficit and

make tax abatement payments on outstanding bonds.

“Between trying to offset a deficit and assisting our taxpayers with some tax abatement, those would be a couple ideas we have talked about at the meetings we’ve had with the county schools,” Burgess said.

The districts’ next meeting has not been scheduled, but Moeller expects leaders from the five districts in favor of the tax will gather to talk about how they would like to proceed, he said.

“Each school district would have to formally say, ‘Yes, we want to move forward with this as a referendum,’ ” Moeller said.

Until then, Sycamore board members have said they will independently vote against the tax if it makes it on the ballot, but aren’t prepared to take a political stance at this time.

“The bottom line is, when you look at it, I would think we’re coming out on the short end of the stick,” Dombek said.

“And I also think it doesn’t serve the taxpayers overall in our county.”

By RHONDA GILLESPIE rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois University is moving a step closer to stripping disgraced U.S. Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert of the honorary doctorate it gave him, after a university committee this week made the formal request.

NIU gave him the honorary Doctor of Laws in 1999.

“Mr. Hastert’s recent felony conviction for fraudulent banking transactions, as well as the testimony about his participation in sexual abuse of children offered during sentencing proceedings, constitute incontrovertible evidence that he has acted in ways that do not reflect the values of the institution,” read a written statement issued this week by the NIU Graduate Council’s Honorary Degree Committee.

Bradley Bond, dean of the university’s graduate school and associate vice president of graduate studies, heads the committee.

Hastert, 74, an Illinois Democrat, was sentenced April 27 to 15 months in federal prison for evading banking laws where he paid about $3.5 million to cover up decades-old sexual abuse of athletes he coached as head of the wrestling program at Yorkville High School – where he also taught.

The retired ex-political powerhouse has longstanding ties to NIU. He received his graduate degree from there in 1967. When he was first sworn in as House Speaker in 1999, then-NIU President John LaTourette attended the ceremony.

However, members of NIU’s University Council, which appears to be the first internal organization to broach the idea of rescinding Hastert’s honorarium after bringing it up at a Nov. 4 meeting, suggested that taking the honor should follow a similar path to bestowing it.

“It does seem to me that it ought to be very similar to the kind of policies and procedures that are in place to award

it,” history professor Eric Mogren said during that meeting.

At least one board member had expressed caution in making a decision to take Hastert’s NIU honor away. Trustee Robert Boey told the Daily Chronicle in November that he wanted to wait for more facts to be released about Hastert’s legal troubles before having an opinion about rescinding the honorary degree.

Boey is the only current trustee who

was on the board when Hastert’s honorary degree was conferred.

He could not be immediately reached Thursday for comment on his thoughts now.

“I think it’s important that the university takes a stand,” said Dillon Domke, also a University Council member, and a graduating senior. “Such atrocious actions – we want to distance ourselves as much as we can from that.”

Shabbona area schools locked down after man steals cash register

By KATIE SMITH ksmith@shawmedia.com SHABBONA – A Shabbona man tried to steal the cash register from a convenience store just blocks from his home Thursday, but didn’t get far before dropping it and running home, police said.

Bryan M. Malone, 30, of the 200 block of South Shabbona Street, Shabbona, is charged with robbery and armed robbery, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. The most serious charge, armed robbery, typically is punishable by six to 30 years in prison.

where Malone was hiding, Shabbona area schools were placed on lockdown, according to the news release.

Police responded about 7:30 a.m. to a call of a robbery in progress at Casey’s General Store, 317 W Comanche Ave., Shabbona. Witnesses at Casey’s told police that a man had stolen the store’s cash register.

Bryan Malone entered the Malone store with a sweatshirt hood pulled closed around his face to conceal his identity, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan said. Malone implied he was armed

with a gun during the robbery, and police found a pocket knife with the blade extended on the store’s floor, Sullivan said.

A customer present during the robbery tried to stop and follow Malone, who only made it about 100 feet out of the store before dropping the cash register, Sullivan said. He headed for the apartment where he was staying in the 200 block of Shabbona Street, Sullivan said.

Police do not believe he got his hands on any cash, Sullivan said.

Police tracked Malone back to the apartment building, where 11 officers surrounded the building until Malone was arrested, Sullivan said. It was

more than three hours from the time police received the call until Malone was arrested.

Malone’s bond will be set in DeKalb County court Friday afternoon. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office has had previous run-ins with Malone, but Thursday’s was the most serious to date, Sullivan said.

Police in February were seeking information about a separate burglary at the same Casey’s, from which about $1,000 of video surveillance equipment was stolen. In that incident no money was reported stolen and investigators have not identified any witnesses.

There is no word on whether the two cases were related.

BERDENA M. SORENSEN Born: March 29, 1918, in Kaneville Died: May 4, 2016, in Hinckley Berdena M. Sorensen, age 98, of Hinckley, IL, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at her home. She was born at home on March 29, 1918, in Kaneville, IL, the daughter of Fred and Gertrude (Grimm) Krieghbaum.

Berdena attended a country school and was a member of the 1937 graduating

class of Kaneville High School. She loved music. She sang in the church choir and played the trombone at school. Before she was married, she was a housekeeper for a minister and family in Rockford. During her high school years she met the love of her life Roy Sorensen and they were married on December 23, 1939, at the Pierce Church on her parents wedding anniversary. He preceded her in death on March 9, 2015, after 75 years of marriage. She was a member of the English Congregational United Church of Christ in Big Rock, IL. She was a member of Willing Workers, Women’s Evening Fellowship and Aurora Moose Lodge. Berdena was employed at AT&T, (formerly Western Electric) of Montgomery and retired after 18 years of service in 1983 as an inspector. She loved her flowers and birds. Roy and Berdena loved to go dancing every Saturday night and playing cards with friends and family.

After retirement they travelled to different states and countries.

She leaves behind two children, Terry (Sherry) Sorensen and Lavon (Alan) Nehring;

By BRETT ROWLAND browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A Sycamore attorney’s plan to call more than a dozen local attorneys and several prosecutors as witnesses at his upcoming felony theft trial fell apart Thursday in court.

Kevin O. “K.O.” Johnson, 50, of the 1600 block of Maness Court, Sycamore, is accused of withholding money from a former employee’s paycheck but failing to invest it in her retirement fund in 2012, court records show. He is representing himself.

On Thursday, Judge Robbin Stuckert quashed two of the subpoenas that Johnson had sent to attorneys. She had quashed a third the day before.

After the judge’s ruling, Johnson withdrew subpoenas for 15 other attorneys and prosecutors.

Johnson had planned to call the attorneys as witnesses at trial to support his claims that the case against him is politically motivated.

Attorney James Groat, who appeared on behalf of two former DeKalb

for improper conduct.

Groat called Johnson’s claims “irrelevant,” “immaterial” and a “red herring” in what should be a simple felony theft case. He said the subpoenas were intendKevin O. ed to harass.

“K.O.” “I can’t believe a Johnson lawyer with so many years of experience has filed such babble,” Groat said. “It’s scandalous stuff. ... This is ridiculous stuff with no probative value.”

Late last month, Johnson filed documents showing that he planned to call more than a dozen other local attorneys, including DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack, as witnesses and produce a color exhibit of a former employee’s breasts at trial, court records show. The former employee is the victim in the theft case.

Groat said the way Johnson filed the subpoenas and other motions in the case showed disrespect for the system.

“The way he’s gone about this is all wrong,” Groat said.

Groat asked the judge to impose sanctions against Johnson. Groat also asked that Johnson be required to pay attorneys costs for his clients.

Stuckert asked Johnson several times about how the subpoenas and other claims in the case were relevant to his defense on the theft charge.

Groat characterized them as “wild allegations shot from the hip.”

Stuckert didn’t rule Thursday on Johnson’s motion to dismiss the case.

In that motion, Johnson claims prosecutors violated his right to a speedy trial. Stuckert said she didn’t have enough information to rule on that motion, but planned to do so at a hearing set for 3:30 p.m. Thursday. The case had been set for trial Tuesday.

Johnson’s claims in court documents filed late last month garnered the attention of many within DeKalb County’s legal community. Several attorneys who had been given subpoenas by Johnson sat in the gallery Thursday.

Schmack, who had been sent a subpoena in the case, observed part of the hearing from the jury box. The subpoena for Schmack was among those that Johnson withdrew.

DeKALB – Officials approved the DeKalb Park District’s third executive director in three years Thursday, with a unanimous vote to elevate Amy Doll from the interim role she’s been serving in since March. “Amy picked up the pace in February when we saw that the contract wasn’t going to be renewed for Jason Mangum,� said Phil Young, president of the five-member board of commissioners. “Since then, she’s taken on a lot of administrative duties.�

Young said the board saved time and money in tapping Doll. Promoting from within the district staff, he said, meant not paying for a search and, as a result, going longer without an appointed leader.

Commissioners approved Doll’s appointment during a special meeting at the district’s administrative office on Sycamore Road. The park district has a $6.5 million budget.

Doll will make $116,000, the same as her predecessor, Young said. He explained that her two-year contract will auto-renew and would only come before the board if there are issues with her work.

Doll started with the park district in

September 2014 as the superintendent of recreation, coming to DeKalb from Freeport, where she spent three years as the aquatic director of the YMCA there. The board moved her in March into the interim executive director position, a move the 40-year-old said made for some awkwardness. “Quite honestly, I told (the board) ‘I just don’t know’ ... this guy hired me,�

Doll said of replacing Mangum.

But Young said the former director’s departure was a mutual decision between him and the board. He said commissioners were miffed that a number of vital improvements had not been implemented under the previous administration, including building a new maintenance facility and addressing deficiencies with the aging pool at Hopkins Park. “The community was looking at (the pool issue) long before I got here,� said Doll, a mother of sons ages 13 and 5. “I would like for them to not be looking at that for very much longer.�

Commissioners expressed being hopeful after approving the new executive director.

Earlier in the meeting, Doll was part of the discussion on building a new maintenance structure, which could be erected by spring 2017.

By DON BABWIN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Cook County’s embattled state’s attorney asked a judge Thursday to appoint a special prosecutor to take over the case against a white Chicago police officer she didn’t charge until more than a year after he shot a black teenager 16 times.

In a motion that surprised civil rights attorneys who were set to continue their push to force Anita Alvarez off the case, her office filed a motion to have someone else prosecute officer Jason Van Dyke, who is charged with first-degree murder in the October 2014 killing of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.

Alvarez was voted out of office under withering criticism of her handling of the case and is leaving office in December. She didn’t charge Van Dyke until hours before the court-ordered November 2015 release of the dashcam video.

On Thursday, even as she was asking off the case, Alvarez continued to defend herself against allegations that her close political relationship with the police officers union created a conflict of interest and made her reluctant to pursue criminal cases against officers

Teachers union decides against taking strike vote

CHICAGO – The Chicago Teachers Union has decided against striking over the lack of a contract, for now.

The union’s House of Delegates met Wednesday and did not take a vote on a strike or set a strike date. Union officials have indicated teachers could wait until fall to strike. Union Vice President Jesse Sharkey said there’s concern over losing health insurance and end-of-the-year paychecks.

Chicago teachers have been working without a contract for nearly a year. An independent fact-finder declared last month the Chicago Public Schools’ most recent contract offer was fair. It would phase out a 7 percent pension benefit the district paid for teachers and include raises over four years. The union rejected the findings.

GOP lawmakers want auditor spending answers

SPRINGFIELD – A group of Republican lawmakers attempted to turn up the election-year heat Thursday on the state’s chief fiscal monitor, demanding that Auditor General Frank Mautino answer questions about his campaign spending as a legislator.

First-term Rep. Grant Wehrli of Naperville, who faces a Democratic challenger in November, said at a state Capitol news conference that he and 19 colleagues sought answers Thursday in their third recent letter to Mautino that read, “The people of Illinois are tired of the many corruption scandals they’ve had to endure in recent years.”

Mautino was a Democratic deputy majority leader in the House for 24 years before the Legislature, controlled by Democrats, appointed him to a 10-year term last fall as auditor general. The Spring Valley politician replaced the retiring William Holland to examine state government

2 Illinois state parks reopen after donor pays electric bill

EFFINGHAM – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources said Ramsey Lake State Recreation Area and Horseshoe Lake State Park have reopened after a donor paid to turn the electricity back on.

IDNR spokesman Chris Young said the parks reopened Wednesday after they were closed about two weeks ago because of the state budget impasse.

Young said the electric company didn’t name the donor. Southwestern Electric

had been trying to force Alvarez’s removal from the case said they hoped that the judge would appoint an independent prosecutor who is not affiliated with Alvarez’ office or that of Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

“There is, as a matter of reality, a close nexus in terms of personnel and in terms of nonaggressiveness in these matters between the state’s attorney and the (state) attorney general’s office,” said lawyer Locke Bowman, who represents a coalition trying to have Alvarez removed from the case. Madigan’s office didn’t immediately respond to a phone request for comment.

The release of the dashcam video showing Van Dyke shooting McDonald over and over led to major protests and federal and local investigations of the police department. It also prompted Mayor Rahm Emanuel to fire the police superintendent, Garry McCarthy.

Alvarez has defended her office’s handling of the case, which she has called very complicated, and her record in filing charges against police officers.

But the timing of her announcement of charges – hours before the court-ordered release of the video – helped feed accusations of a cover-up by the department and Alvarez’s office.

Cooperative officials didn’t identify the donor, citing privacy concerns.

The parks were closed because electric and trash services were terminated.

Young said Ramsey Lake owed $1,765 in electric bills and Horseshoe Lake owed $829. Young said it wasn’t clear how long the parks would remain open.

Eagle hit by gunshot might fly again after surgery

URBANA – A bald eagle injured by a gunshot will undergo surgery that a University of Illinois veterinary intern said may restore its ability to fly.

The year-old eagle was shot several months ago and found in southern Illinois.

She was moved to the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital this week and is scheduled to have surgery on a broken bone in her wing on Thursday.

Senate Democrats field large roster of women

By ERICA WERNER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – If 2016 has been the Year of Trump in politics, it may also end up being a new Year of the Woman, if Democrats get their way. And that won’t be a coincidence.

Democrats aim to have female Senate candidates on the ballot in nine states in November, a near-record, and these contenders likely will be sharing the ticket with the first major-party female presidential nominee in history in Hillary Clinton.

Donald Trump, whose commanding win in Indiana cemented his improbable status as the GOP’s presumptive presidential nominee, is viewed unfavorably by 70 percent of women, according to Gallup. So as discomfited Republican Senate candidates released statements trying to change the topic or have it both ways Wednesday, Democrats made plans to link their largely male opponents to Trump, seeking to win back control of the Senate in November by electing Democratic women from coast to coast.

“I’ll tell you as a professional woman, too many women have had to fight Donald Trump’s type of sexism and offensive rhetoric their entire lives,” said Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick of Arizona, who is challenging Republican Sen. John McCain and released an early ad in February tying the incumbent to Trump.

“After 33 years in Washington, John McCain has changed, and Donald Trump proves that he has changed,” Kirkpatrick said in an interview, reflecting the Democratic approach in key Senate races across the country.

Republicans have grappled for months with the impact a Trump candidacy would have on their efforts to protect their slim 54-46 seat Senate majority. Last fall, the executive director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Ward Baker, wrote a memo later leaked to The Washington Post that warned candidates to take lessons from Trump’s rise but steer clear of his incendiary stances.

“Houston, we have a problem,” Baker wrote. “Donald Trump has said some wacky things about women. ... We do not want to re-engage the ‘war on women’ fight, so isolate Trump on this issue by offering a quick condemnation of it.”

Indeed, for all of the controversies he’s stoked and every voter group he’s offended while appealing to enough white Republican men to emerge as the GOP nominee, women could be Trump’s biggest problem this fall, and the biggest problem for Senate Republicans. Women vote in higher numbers than men – in 2012, 10 million more women cast ballots than men­

– and vote more heavily Democratic. This year, strategists in both parties expect those trends to be magnified given Trump’s unpopularity with women, Clinton’s historic candidacy (although she herself faces high negative ratings), and the large number of women running for Senate.

On Wednesday, EMILY’s List, an influential political committee dedicated to electing women, targeted five GOP Senate candidates who face female opponents in November, demanding to know whether they would play the “woman’s card.”

“Are we about to see him devalue his female opponent and launch character attacks on her in the same vein as Donald Trump?” asked the releases aimed at McCain, Rep. Joe Heck of Nevada, and Sens. Richard Burr of North Carolina, Mark Kirk of Illinois and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania.

Already, a GOP-run anti-Trump political action committee aired an ad featuring women reading some of Trump’s negative comments about women, including “bimbo,” “dog” and “fat pig.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS FORT McMURRAY, Alberta – Canadian officials began evacuating 8,000 people from work camps north of devastated Fort McMurray by air on Thursday and hoped to move thousands more via a highway convoy Friday if it is safe from a massive wildfire raging in Alberta that has grown to 210,035 acres.

More than 80,000 people have emptied Fort McMurray in the heart of Canada’s oil sands, authorities said.

The Alberta government, which declared a state of emergency, said more than 1,100 firefighters, 145 helicopters, 138 pieces of heavy equipment and 22 air tankers were fighting a total of 49 wildfires, with seven considered out of control. Chad Morrison with AB Wildfire, manager of wildfire prevention, said the fire continued to grow but is moving away from Fort McMurray and the rate of its growth has slowed.

About 25,000 evacuees moved north in the hours after Tuesday’s mandatory evacuation, where oil sands work camps were converted to house people. But the bulk of the more than 80,000 evacuees fled south to Edmonton and elsewhere, and officials are moving everyone south where there are better support services.

Officials had flown 4,000 evacuees to Edmonton and Calgary by Thursday evening and expected to fly 4,000 more by the end of the day. They hoped the highway would become safe enough today to move the remaining people out via the south. It wasn’t safe Thursday.

A helicopter will lead the evacuation convoy this morning to make sure the

highway is safe. It will pass through Fort McMurray where the fire has torched 1,600 homes and other buildings.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said the first convoy will be 400 vehicles and officials would see how that goes.

There have been no injuries or deaths in the province from the fires. Notley said financial support will be provided to Albertans and cash cards might be made available for evacuated residents.

The Alberta government also declared a provincewide fire ban in an effort to reduce the risk of more blazes in a province that is very hot and dry.

Morrison said rain is needed.

“Let me be clear: air tankers are not going to stop this fire,” he said. “It is going to continue to push through these dry conditions until we actually get some significant rain.”

The fire remained wrapped around the western and southern edges of the city. No rain clouds were expected around Fort McMurray until late Saturday, with 40 percent chance of showers, according to online forecasts by Environment Canada.

Notley said she didn’t know how much better the evacuation could have been when asked if ample warning was given to residents, noting that in 48 hours more than 80,000 people were evacuated from a town that essentially has two roads out of it.

Fort McMurray is surrounded by wilderness and is Canada’s main oil sands town. Despite the size of the town and its importance to the Canadian economy, essentially there are only two ways out via car.

Canada evacuating 8K fleeing wildfire by air

WASHINGTON – The federal government announced sweeping new rules Thursday for electronic cigarettes that will for the first time require the devices and their ingredients to be reviewed, a mandate that could offer protection for consumers and upend a multibillion dollar industry that largely has gone unregulated.

Before brands are allowed to stay in the market, regulators will check the e-cigarettes’ design and the liquid nicotine they contain. The fast-growing devices have found a foothold with teenagers.

“Millions of kids are being introduced to nicotine every year, a new generation hooked on a highly addictive chemical,” Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell said. “We cannot let the enormous progress we’ve made toward a tobacco-free generation be undermined by products that impact our health and economy in this way.”

The rules issued by the Food and Drug Administration also will extend long-standing restrictions on traditional cigarettes to a host of other products, including e-cigarettes, hookah tobacco, pipe tobacco and nicotine gels. Minors would be banned from buying the products.

Battery-powered e-cigarettes turn the nicotine into an inhalable vapor.

They lack the chemicals and tars of burning tobacco, but the cigarettes have not been extensively studied, and there’s no scientific consensus on the risks or advantages of “vaping.”

More than 15 percent of high school students report using e-cigarettes, up more than 900 percent over the past five years, according to federal figures.

Beginning in August, retailers

will be prohibited from selling tobacco products to anyone younger than 18, placing them in vending machines or distributing free samples. While nearly all states already ban sales of e-cigarettes to minors, federal officials said they will be able to impose stiffer penalties and deploy more resources for enforcement.

For now, e-cigarette users might not see big changes. Companies have two years to submit their information to the FDA and another year while the agency reviews it. The review process applies to products introduced after 2007, which includes nearly all of them.

Government officials said the reviews are critical to taming the “wild west” marketplace.

“With this rule, the FDA will be able to prevent misleading claims and provide consumers with information to help them better understand the risks” of tobacco, FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf said.

The action comes five years after the agency first announced its intent to regulate e-cigarettes and more than two years after it floated its initial proposal.

The rules are not uniform. For example, while the FDA intends to phase out flavored cigars, it will allow flavored e-cigarettes to remain on the market, a decision that irked anti-tobacco advocates.

The changes do “nothing to restrict the irresponsible marketing of e-cigarettes or the use of sweet e-cigarette flavors such as gummy bear and cotton candy,” said Matthew Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

The vaping industry said the lengthy federal reviews would be time-consuming and costly and could put many smaller companies out of business.

Prioritization plan better fit for the times In September 2010, Northern Illinois University officials talked of tremendous change and uncertainty in higher education as they announced plans for a new long-term strategy dubbed “Vision 2020.”

At the time, there were almost 24,000 students enrolled at the school, and there was concern that the state had been late in delivering $107 million in aid payments the prior school year.

Vision 2020’s goals for the 2010s included raises for faculty and staff, increasing the number of scholarships available for students, refurbishing and adding residence halls and most importantly, growing enrollment to 30,000 by 2020.

Only six years later, the focus has shifted from growth to preservation. This school year, NIU has received $26 million in state aid, or is expected to soon.

There is no guarantee of any more. Fall enrollment was 20,130.

Now, NIU is faced with “program prioritization,” a plan that seeks to maximize the university’s resources by putting them behind the most critical programs and functions at the institution.

This is a more fitting plan for the times. The reports, which were released by the university this week, were thorough. Whether it was athletics, top administration or academic programs, seemingly nothing was spared scrutiny.

The question is whether the recommendations of the task forces will be truly transformative, or if they will be foiled by institutional politics until they become outdated and shelved. ​It also seemed as though this process was overdue.

Eleven of the 41 academic programs given the lowest rating – a possible prelude to discontinuation – were actually requested for deletion. Some certificate programs had few or no students enrolled in recent years.

When the focus is on growth, it pays to have a broad offering of programs to attract as many students as possible. But when it is on preservation, and running lean, then it’s important to focus on the things that NIU does best, and that will be most attractive to students looking to succeed in careers after college.

It’s clear that not all of the suggestions of the task force will be implemented.

However, if some of their recommendations can be implemented and help make NIU more efficient and focused, perhaps NIU eventually can claw its way back to a position where focusing on significant growth can be its goal once again in the 2020s.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Column leaves out reasons for higher ed funding crisis

To the Editor: I was extremely disappointed with Dan McCaleb’s column regarding state Rep. Jack Franks’ vote and views on the state’s $600 million funding bill for higher education (“Franks calls Illinois college funding measure a ‘dangerous precedent,’ page 2, Saturday, April 30).

McCaleb wrote that Franks said, “This is a 72 percent cut to higher education and MAP grants. I couldn’t codify that. This is the new starting point.

This is going to be Affecting classrooms. We’ve lost 16,000 students to other states’ universities. This is a very dangerous precedent we are setting.”

Although the information in the article was accurate, the information McCaleb left out is, in my opinion, a purposeful attempt to manipulate the facts and the readers.

McCaleb failed to mention that the funding Franks claims he wants for higher education is not available because Gov. Bruce Rauner requested that tax rates remain at lower levels that took effect on Jan. 1, 2015.

Or that Rauner will not approve any increase in revenue unless his non-budgetary agenda is agreed to, although there is no evidence that it will provide any benefit to Illinois, help pay off the unprecedented one-year state debt increase of over $6 billion, or repair the also-unprecedented and perhaps irreparable harm done to this state and its citizens during

the past year.

Franks has consistently stated that he will oppose any attempt to increase taxes that could provide the revenue he claims he wants for higher education.

Franks knows that it is not, and will not, be possible to provide the funding he feels is necessary for higher education without additional revenue, and that at current revenue levels it is all but certain that higher education in Illinois will suffer ever more grievously, and that it may be, or already has been, irreparably harmed.

Franks is highly hypocritical to complain about funding for higher education when he opposes collecting the revenue needed to provide the funding.

McCaleb should write a follow-up column about how Franks, Rauner and, as far as I know, every Republican, oppose giving Illinois voters the opportunity to vote on a change to the constitution that would allow for a graduated income tax, which could provide additional revenue for higher education.

Voters overwhelmingly approved a nonbinding resolution for a millionaire tax in the November 2014 election, and recent polls show that citizens overwhelmingly support a progressive income tax.

Why are Franks, Rauner, along with every Republican, opposed to giving voters a voice on something they overwhelmingly approve?

But a ban on using federal funds to research the issue dates to 1996, when a rider was attached to the annual appropriations bill, prohibiting the CDC from lobbying for gun control.

This rider was interpreted – incorrectly, Wyden says – to mean even scientific research into the causes of gun violence is banned.

The author of the rider, then-Rep. Jay Dickey, R-Ark., now says he supports gun-violence research and that his original rider doesn’t preclude this.

He said such research wouldn’t infringe on the rights of gun owners

any more than research on highway deaths infringes on the rights of vehicle owners.

But, despite the growing support for such research, including from medical groups that deem it a public health issue, the Republican-controlled Congress has refused to consider lifting the funding ban – even in the face of more than 33,000 gun violence deaths a year, according to CDC statistics Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore, also has pleaded for research into gun violence, arguing that significant advances in scientific research since the ban was enacted may make it possible to find ways to reduce gun deaths.

But his plea has fallen on deaf ears.

As of Friday, Wyden and 15 other Democratic senators had not received a response from the heads of the Senate and House appropriations subcommittees to a request that $10 million be included in a 2017 appropriations bill for research on gun violence.

Meanwhile, the National Rifle Association, which spent more than $30 million on campaign and political contributions in 2013-14, according to the non-profit Center for Responsive Politics, continues to fund political campaigns.

As journalists, let us not tiptoe around Trump, the nominee Donald Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee for president, and now journalists must decide how to cover him.

How do we reconcile the carnival act he’s been with the seriousness of what is now at stake?

Do we cast him as a man equal to the gravitas of the position he seeks instead of the guy, for example, who proudly harangued President Barack Obama for proof that he was born in Hawaii?

Do we cover him as the contender with a suddenly measured tone without also reminding voters of his long habit of misogynist commentary?

For another example, commentary such as this about Rosie O’Donnell: “I’d look her right in that fat, ugly face of hers, I’d say, ‘Rosie, you’re fired.’ ” Or this, about Megyn Kelly after she dared remind him during the first Republican debate that he has called women he doesn’t like “fat pigs,” “dogs,” “slobs” and “disgusting animals”: Kelly had “blood coming out of her wherever.”

“Women,” Trump has said, “you have to treat them like sh-t.”

Yes, I’ve written about this

VIEWS Connie Schultz before. And yes, I will continue to write about it. How can we possibly pretend Trump never said stuff like this – that it doesn’t really matter – and expect any thinking American to take us seriously?

I’m going to watch this coverage with the fierce focus of a hound on the hunt, and I am confident that I will not be the only columnist or the only woman to do so. As I’ve written a number of times in recent months, this is not the misogyny of the 2008 campaign, but only because so many of us women are older now and we are so done with this.

This morning, by the way, I listened as several male panelists on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” talked about how Hillary Clinton is so unlikable compared with garrulous Trump. I heard this on satellite radio as I drove to work.

I don’t recommend doing that if you want to have any faith in Beltway punditry or if you have

an interest in driving within the lines. To quote my friend Joanna Kuebler, it’s as if they start their day with a heaping bowl of testosteroni.

It is one thing to cover Trump as the Republican nominee. It is quite another to pretend that he isn’t the same man who has repeatedly used the language of misogyny – and racism and xenophobia, too.

He refused to rebuke an endorsement from former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard David Duke. He told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews that women should “face some sort of punishment” for getting legal abortions.

He said Muslims should be banned from entering our country. He has a history, this man, this billionaire reality TV star, and it must follow him every day of this presidential race.

As I pointed out in a public post on Facebook earlier this week, I understand the challenges of reporting about Trump, one of which is to avoid appearing as if we’re punishing him for hating us. He openly disdains the media and enjoys inciting crowds to mock journalists at his rallies. We tread a fine line in de-

scribing his behavior without looking as if we are taking it personally.

Add to that problem some editors who can be too quick to temper their reporters’ coverage to avoid another avalanche of outrage from Trump fans.

This tentativeness chips away at the sharp edges of journalism while accomplishing nothing in the way of placating our critics. A person who loves Trump has no use for us anyway. Why are we worried about defending the truth to people who’ve decided they’re so over that?

I ask that we journalists not tiptoe around the obvious hallmarks of who Donald Trump is. He may attempt to dial back the rhetoric, but that doesn’t change who we know him to be.

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., is again pushing to end the ban on the use of federal funds to research gun violence in the United States.

His latest effort likely will fail, as did the bill he co-sponsored last year to fund research at the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on gun violence prevention and firearms safety. That bill would have allocated $10 million a year in research funds, for six years But Wyden and others in Congress are doing the right thing by continuing to press for a lifting of the ban.

In 1993, Bosnia was in the midst of a civil war, and 19 members of a school basketball team were fighting for their lives.

The Sycamore Rotary Club learned of their plight; working through Rotary International and several diplomatic channels, the Rotary Club was able to help those high school-age players and Srdan two of their coaches Selimbegovic secure passage out of the country. Literally dodging bullets as they ran across the tarmac, they boarded a plane to Germany, flew to the U.S. and settled in Sycamore ... where they were able to carry on their education, while several of them took to the court for the Spartans.

Now, all have grown up and gone their separate ways. But Srdan Selim-

begovic remained in town, eventually opening up MVP Sports Bar and becoming a part of the Sycamore community. He and his teammates were embraced by the people here, and he says their willingness to help a group of young men – with no family, no money and only the clothes on their backs – speaks to what Sycamore, and the Rotary, are all about.

In recognition of what he and his teammates have accomplished, Selimbegovic has been chosen as the April Citizen of the Month, an honor that took him by surprise.

The Rotary Club has provided $100 for contribution to the charity of his choice; he has donated it to the Sycamore High School Athletic Department.

Kishwaukee Family YMCA names new swim team coach DAILY CHRONICLE The Kishwaukee Family YMCA has hired Guy Gniotczynski as the new senior coach for the DeKalb County Swim Team. Gniotczynski’s first day of coaching was April 18.

Gniotczynski earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Carroll College in 2003 while serving as an assistant coach for the West Suburban YMCA in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. During his time there, Gniotczynski was promoted to head coach Guy and grew the swim team Gniotczynski from 20 swimmers to 80, and produced the team’s first YMCA national qualifier. Because of his success at the West Suburban YMCA, he was asked to join the coaching staff at the Schroeder YMCA in Brown Deer, Wisconsin, while keeping his head caching position at the West Suburban YMCA. Gniotczynski received a master’s degree in education from Carthage College. While at Carthage, the men’s team won back-to-back conference titles, the women’s team placed in the top 10 nationally and had its first NCAA Division III national champion in school history.

After earning his graduate degree in 2010, he went to work for Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, as an assistant coach serving on deck and leading their recruiting endeavors. He also served as the assistant

coach at the Bear Cat Swim Club where he assisted the senior program and led the 11- to 14-year-olds to the state, age group sectional and zone championships. He presented at the Oregon Swimming Coaches Clinic, and helped the Bear Cats to two USA Swimming Bronze Medals for Excellence Awards.

In 2012, Gniotczynski took the head coaching position at the Rapid City Racers Swim Club in Rapid City, South Dakota. This program has more than 100 swimmers. During his time in South Dakota, he assisted in the training of a world champion in the Jr. Elite Triathlon.

Gniotczynski is an ASCA Level 3 Age Group Coach and an ASCA Level 4 Senior Certified Coach.

“We are extremely excited to have someone with coach Gniotczynski’s credentials coming to DCST,” Brian Bickner, senior aquatics director at the Kishwaukee Family YMCA, said in a news release. “We are confident he will do an excellent job of leading our program and continuing our proud tradition of swimming excellence in DeKalb County.”

YMCA/DeKalb County Swim Team is a competitive program for children ages 6 to 18 who can complete one length (25 yards). The program focuses on the development of swimming skills for all ages and abilities. Swimmers practice in groups by age and ability level. Children compete in meets against swimmers their own age.

Kaneland takes series from DeKalb with another 1-run win

By EDDIE CARIFIO ecarifio@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Already on the losing end of a one-run game in a series against DeKalb, Kaneland coach Brian Aversa said he didn’t want to feel that way again.

The Knights scored the go-ahead run in the sixth to edge the Barbs 3-2, taking the series to put themselves in the driver’s seat for the Northern Illinois Big 12 East crown.

Every game in the series was decided by one run, including Kane-

land’s 5-4 loss on Tuesday. Kaneland (10-7 overall, 6-2 conference) beat DeKalb 1-0 Monday in the opener.

“You like to come out on top in those one-run games because it drives you crazy thinking about what you could have done differently,” Aversa said. “Especially after Tuesday’s game, it was like, oh gosh, it was right there for us. It’s nice to be on top of this one.”

In the sixth, Kaneland’s Joe Laudont hit a one-out single then Jacob Violett hit a hard grounder down the third base line into left field, which

got past DeKalb outfielder Derek Kyler and allowed Laudont to score from first to put the Knights up, 3-2.

Kaneland starter Noah Jones – who threw just 88 pitches in the game and 12 total in the fourth and fifth innings – got the first two batters out in the seventh, but Kyler and Nathan Sisler hit back-to-back singles before Connor Hoyle lined out to center to end the game.

The loss puts the Knights a game and a half up on the Barbs for the conference crown. Kaneland has four games left to play in conference and

DeKalb (10-11, 5-4) has three.

“Right now we came in controlling our own destiny, and now we don’t,” DeKalb coach Justin Keck said. “We’re going to need help from somebody. But at the same time we can’t worry about that, we have to worry about ourselves. We have to make sure we’re playing our best baseball the next two weeks to give us a chance to go as far as we can in the regional and the whole state series.”

Newport just misses no-hitter, Barbs shut out Yorkville

DEKALB – Morgan Newport just needed two more outs.

Instead, Yorkville’s Hailey Delgado broke up the DeKalb star pitcher’s chance at a no-hitter in the seventh inning and Newport settled for a dominating performance Thursday in a 3-0 win over the Foxes.

“I was just trying to get the win for my team,” said Newport, who struck out nine in the victory. “The main thing I was focused on was getting a win for my team and making good pitches.”

Delgado’s hit came on a screamer hit into the hole on the left side of the infield with one out in the top of the seventh – going off the gloves of third baseman Mya Millard and shortstop

Abby Taylor. Despite losing a no-hit bid, Newport remained in command, getting the final two batters out.

In the fifth inning, a Yorkville runner reached on an error and when the Foxes responded with a groundball to DeKalb first baseman Jenna Levine, the Barbs turned an unorthodox double play. Levine took the force out at first and then fired the ball to Abby Taylor covering second, who applied the tag to the runner after she had rounded second. That superb showing of defense was a shining example of how sharp the Barbs were, DeKalb coach Jeff Davis said.

“I think that it is just the wear and tear of the season finally working in our favor,” he said. “We’ve been grinding in practice, taking ground balls and our defense has improved. We looked good today, but if we want to

win a regional game, we have to keep playing solid defense.”

DeKalb (14-5 overall, 5-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) managed to start stringing together hits late after being held to just one infield single in the Barbs’ first 12 batters. In the fourth inning, Newport reached on a double and was brought in by an error by the shortstop on a ball hit by Levine.

In the fifth, JC Longeville and Taylor worked back-to-back two-out walks and Erin Karasewski singled to drive in Longeville. An inning later, the Barbs added another insurance run on an RBI double by Skylar Haring.

“We told the girls to be aggressive,” Davis said. “On the first play of the game [Abby] Taylor tried to stretch a double into a triple on a ball that was in front of her in left field. She made

a decision and it almost paid off. You can’t be mad at a girl for a play like that. The moment you do get mad over an aggressive play, the girls stop being aggressive and we don’t want that.”

For Yorkville (7-15, 2-8 Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference), coach Jory Regnier told her girls to focus on making good contact and keeping the game close against a pitcher like Newport.

“We battled better than we did the last time we played them,” Regnier said. “We kept the game close throughout the entire game and tried to not let her [Newport] control the game to the extent that she did the last time we played them. We played okay defense, but we made a few mistakes that cost us. It probably should have been a 1-0 game.”

DeKalb will host Ottawa at 4:30 p.m.

Panke doubled to left field past a diving Preston Havis to put runners at second and third. Sauser scored on a single by Eric Nelson, then Panke came around on a sacrifice fly by Willis Brei.

Jones struck out two and didn’t walk a matter.

“We did what we wanted to do, taking the series,” Jones said. “Usually DeKalb is the toughest team in the conference with us, and it’s nice to beat them again, like last year.”

Nunez hurt his finger on the first play of the game, falling to the grown after dropping a foul ball by Jake Marczuk and landing awkwardly on his hand. Keck said he expects Nunez will be out for a while and the injury leaves the Barbs with 14 healthy players on the roster.

Marczuk scored for Kaneland on a double by Luke Calabrese two pitches later, although he was thrown out trying to stretch it into a single.

Kaneland added a run in the third off DeKalb starter Hoyle, who took the loss. Hoyle walked the first three batters of the inning, and Marczuk scored when Matt Rasko hit into a double play to tie the game at 2.

Hoyle didn’t give up a walk outside of the third inning, although he hit Will Ring in the first.

“Obviously we battled, Connor battled his butt off on the mound,” Keck said. “He didn’t have his best stuff, but he kept working and putting his heart into every pitch he

Kyler had the Barbs’ only multihit game. The Knights had just six hits in the game, including two for

“We’re excited,” Aversa said.

Hendricks, Zobrist lead Cubs in win Red Sox use long ball to beat White Sox

By JAY COHEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Kyle Hendricks pitched six scoreless innings, Ben Zobrist drove in four runs and the Cubs beat the Washington Nationals 5-2 on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series between two of baseball’s hottest teams.

Hendricks (2-2) allowed two hits, struck out four and walked two as the Cubs began a 10-game homestand with their fourth consecutive win and eighth in nine games.

Zobrist hit a two-run single in the fourth and a two-run homer in the eighth, helping the Cubs improve their major league-best record to 21-6 for their best start since they were 23-4 in 1907.

Reigning NL MVP Bryce Harper singled and walked twice against Hendricks, but the right-hander shut down the rest of Washington’s lineup.

Michael Taylor was stranded at second after a two-out double in the third for the Nationals’ first hit.

Jayson Werth hit a long two-run homer in the ninth for Washington, which had won five of six, including a 13-2 victory at World Series champion Kansas City on Wednesday. The Nationals began the day with baseball’s second-best record at 19-8.

Joe Ross (3-1) matched Hendricks for much of the chilly night, striking out nine in 62/3 innings. The 22-year-

old right-hander allowed five hits and walked two.

One rough stretch was enough to send Ross to his first loss since Aug. 16 at San Francisco.

The Cubs first four batters in the fourth reached safely, producing two runs. Tommy La Stella singled, Kris Bryant had a ground-rule double and Anthony Rizzo was walked intentionally before Zobrist’s single to right gave the Cubs a 2-0 lead.

Rizzo was thrown out trying to advance to third on Zobrist’s hit, and Ross retired the next two hitters to get out of the inning. But the damage was done.

Clayton Richard and Justin Grimm combined for a perfect seventh for the Cubs before Pedro Strop wriggled out of a jam in the eighth.

Zobrist connected for his third homer and Addison Russell added an RBI double in the bottom half, providing some valuable breathing room.

After Werth went deep against Travis Wood with two down, Hector Rondon retired Wilson Ramos on a liner to first for the final out.

Washington second baseman Daniel Murphy was greeted with a round of boos when he came to the plate in the second inning.

It was Murphy’s first game at Wrigley Field since he hit four homers while helping the New York Mets sweep the Cubs in the NL Championship Series last year.

The Red Sox won for the ninth time in 11 games and took two of three in this series between AL division leaders, although this was anything but a thing of beauty.

The teams combined to strand 21 runners and draw 16 walks. But the East-leading Red Sox came up with enough big hits to prevail in a game that lasted 3 hours, 57 minutes.

Pedroia had three hits, starting with a solo homer in the first.

Ramirez connected leading off a tworun third against Erik Johnson (0-1).

Bradley made it 5-3 after the White Sox pulled within one with his solo drive off Matt Albers in the sixth.

David Ortiz capped a two-run eighth with an RBI double that boosted the lead to four, and reliever Matt Barnes (2-1) worked 12/3 scoreless innings for the win.

The White Sox’s Avisail Garcia chased Henry Owens with a leadoff homer in the fourth. But the AL Central leaders dropped their second straight after winning nine of 11.

Owens gave up two runs and two hits while walking six, and Johnson wasn’t much better for the White

Sox. Recalled from Triple-A Charlotte after the White Sox let struggling veteran John Danks go, the 26-yearold right-hander gave up four runs and eight hits in five innings. Johnson struck out six and walked three.

The White Sox cut it to 4-3 with one out in the fifth when Hector Sanchez drew a bases-loaded walk against Heath Hembree. Mookie Betts then nailed Brett Lawrie trying to score on Austin Jackson’s fly to right, ending the inning. The White Sox challenged the play, claiming catcher Ryan Hanigan blocked the plate, but the call stood.

DeKalb badminton coach Duane Cowley said host Buffalo Grove had two of the best doubles team heading into the Buffalo Grove Sectional.

That came true – Buffalo Grove finished first and second. But the Barbs took the final two qualifying spots on Thursday and will send the doubles teams of Hui Zhu and Holly Trapp, and Alyssa Wagner and Helene Collin, to the state tournament May 13 and 14 in Charleston.

“It’s great,” Cowley said. “We played some very competitive teams.

Without being familiar with the competition we’d be seeing we weren’t sure what to expect. But all four girls played very well.”

Collin and Wagner took third with the 14-21, 21-16, 21-12 win over Trapp

and Zhu in the final. Zhu and Trapp won their first two matches and finished up through the consolation bracket, while Wagner and Collin lost their first match but battled back through the consolation bracket.

Huskies riding seven-game winning streak, eyes still on MAC title

DeKALB – The long winning streak is nice, but Northern Illinois baseball coach Mike Kunigonis said the ultimate goal still is a conference championship.

The Huskies are riding their longest winning stretch since 1977 and are tied for first place heading into their three-game series against Toledo starting at 3 p.m. Friday at Ralph McKenzie Field.

“You can take all the streaks you want and tell me I’m never going to have another one of these record-breaking streaks if I can win a MAC championship – if I had to chose, I’m taking the MAC championship any day of the week. That’s what means something,” Kunigonis said of the eighth longest win streak in program history.

Northern Illinois did not have a baseball program from 1983-90.

However, when the schedule hit mid-March earlier this season, it looked like the Huskies were more likely headed to the cellar of the MAC, not threatening for the top spot in the conference tournament. Northern Illinois (19-25 overall, 12-6 in MAC West) went 2-15 in its opening 17 games – allowing 10 or more runs in eight of those contests.

However, the Huskies managed to pull out a 1-0 win over Southern Illinois in extra innings on March 18 – starting a stretch in which they’ve gone 17-10, allowing two runs or fewer in 11 of those contests.

“The game it turned around was when we beat SIU 1-0 in extra innings,” Kunigonis said. “That was the game, because we struggled on the mound – it’s no secret. Now, the Huskies are tied with Ball State (27-18 overall, 12-6 in MAC West) for first place in the division and for second place in the conference. In order to extend that winning streak to seven, the Huskies had a seven-run ninth inning for a dramatic 11-10 walkoff win against Valparaiso on Tuesday.

Kunigonis said the wild victory over the Crusaders validated the coaches preaching that the Huskies can win regardless of the situation.

Amazingly, despite being tied for first place in the MAC West, few Huskies are statistical leaders during conference play. Offensively, Stephen Letz is fourth in RBIs (19) and Tommy Hook is tied for second in walks (15).

SPORTS BRIEFS Carroll scores 21, Raptors beat Heat in OT to tie series

TORONTO – DeMarre Carroll scored 21 points, Jonas Valanciunas had 15 points and 12 rebounds, and the Toronto Raptors beat the Miami Heat 96-92 in overtime on Thursday night to even the Eastern Conference semifinals at one game apiece.

Valanciunas had 11 points and seven rebounds in the fourth quarter and overtime as the Raptors avoided losing consecutive games for the first time this postseason.

DeMar DeRozan scored 20 points, Kyle Lowry had 18 and Terrence Ross 10 for Toronto, which battled back late in the fourth quarter to force the second overtime of the series, then shut the Heat down to start it.

Goran Dragic scored 20, and Dwyane Wade and Joe Johnson each had 17 for the Heat. Hassan Whiteside had 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Luol Deng had 12 points. Game 3 is Saturday in Miami.

Cody Eakin scores in OT, Stars beat Blues 3-2 to tie series

ST. LOUIS – Cody Eakin scored at 2:58 of overtime and the Dallas Stars beat the St. Louis Blues 3-2 on Thursday night, bouncing back from a blowout loss two days earlier to tie the second-round series at two games apiece.

Patrick Sharp set up the winner and also scored for the Stars, coming off a 6-1 loss in Game 3. Rookie Radek Faksa had the

other goal.

Vladimir Tarasenko scored his sixth goal of the playoffs on a first-period breakaway and added an assist for St. Louis, giving him five points in the last two games. Paul Stastny also scored off a deflection from Tarasenko. Game 5 is Saturday in Dallas.

Baffert returns to Kentucky Derby with under the radar horse

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bob Baffert feels under the radar with his latest horse at the Kentucky Derby. All anyone wants to talk about is American Pharoah, last year’s winner who went on to become the sport’s first Triple Crown champion in 37 years.

Waiting at Baffert’s barn with a view of the twin spires was Mor Spirit, another horse like Pharoah with a misspelled name. He has never been worse than second in seven career starts. Mor Spirit has previously mixed it up with some of his Derby competition, finishing second to Exaggerator in the Santa Anita Derby and second to Danzing Candy in the San Felipe in his most recent starts.

The last time a Baffert horse started the Kentucky Derby from post 17 was Point Given in 2001, with Stevens aboard. They finished fifth as the 9-5 favorite that Saturday in May before going on to win the Preakness and Belmont as well as Horse of the Year honors.

Eye exams key to good visual health Dear Dr. K: My vision has been getting worse, and I definitely need reading glasses. Is there any reason not to get the inexpensive ones sold at the drugstore?

Dear Reader: If you’re older than 40, reading glasses can be a necessity. Many people end up buying several pairs at the drugstore. They are inexpensive and available in a wide variety of styles. (Not to mention reading glasses tend to be easily misplaced.)

Why do we need reading glasses in the first place? We see when light rays enter our eyes. The eye’s lens bends and focuses the rays on the retina. This allows the eye to clearly focus on objects at different distances.

As we age, the lens loses some of its flexibility. As a result, it becomes harder to focus on close objects – to read, sew or knit, for example. This is known as presbyopia, which translates to “elder vision.”

It might seem strange the words “elder vision” were used for a condition that typically starts in a person’s 40s (or earlier).

However, when the term first was used, the average life expectancy of a person in the United States was less than age 50.

You asked about off-the-rack reading glasses. These essentially are two magnifying lenses mounted in an eyeglass frame. Like prescription lenses, they provide varying degrees of magnification or refraction (how much they bend and focus light rays). The strength of reading glasses increases in increments of .25, usually ranging from plus-1.00 to plus-2.50.

Drugstore reading glasses typically provide the same refraction for both eyes.

That might be fine if you need the same refraction, but many people don’t.

Another issue is many people who need reading glasses for close vision also need glasses for distant vision. Drugstore

Of greater concern is the possibility your reading difficulties are caused not by simple presbyopia. The lens isn’t the only part of the eye that changes as we age. As you get older, your risk for developing other, more serious conditions also increases.

These include cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration.

That’s why I really urge people to get professional advice when they start having problems reading. You might get lucky and drugstore reading glasses may do the trick. But there’s a good chance prescription glasses will give you better vision. Also, if you have a more serious eye condition, it will be caught and treated early through an eye exam.

Finally, remember this: Once you’re older than 40, you should be having regular eye exams with an ophthalmologist even if you’re not having trouble reading.

I recall a new patient who once came to me. He was almost completely blind from glaucoma. He had used drugstore reading glasses for 20 years, until they no longer helped. When the real problem, glaucoma, was diagnosed, it already had caused permanent loss of vision.

Regular eye exams are the cornerstone to good visual health, whether or not you need glasses.

Dear Abby: A couple of months after moving in with my boyfriend, I have realized his mattress is not a good fit for me. He says it’s 12 years old and it still has 10 to 15 years left in it.

Mattresses older than that can suffer from deteriorating comfort features and diminished support capabilities.

Many consumers wait too long to replace their mattresses. If you wake up in the morning not feeling refreshed and rejuvenated or feeling pain or discomfort, then it’s time to replace this one. So talk with your boyfriend again. If he’s not willing to invest in a replacement, suggest buying a firm mattress topper or even splitting the cost for a new mattress.

A restful night’s sleep is essential for good health. If you are unable to convince him, then you might have moved in with him too quickly.

That leaves 3-5 for West. Given the play so far (the spade-nine top-ofnothing lead denying an honor in the suit and South’s presumably holding the club queen-jack for the trick-two finesse), West is marked with one of the red aces -- but which one?

Well, if it is the diamond ace, that will not be sufficiently helpful.

At best, the defenders will take two hearts, one diamond and one club.

But if West has the heart ace, the defenders can come out ahead if East carefully shifts to the heart two; he must resist the temptation to cash the king first, in case West started with ace-doubleton.

As you can see, this defense -assuming West wins the trick and returns his second heart! -- defeats the contract.
