Rooting for athletes of a certain age POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS These days, I’m rooting for pro athletes of a certain age, and it’s good to see a lot of them doing well.

Jimmy Rollins (born Nov. 27, 1978) has caught on in the White Sox infield and the Sox tore it up in April.

The Cubs are looking like a legitimate title contender, and pitcher John Lackey (Oct. 23, 1978) and catcher David Ross (March 19, 1977) are also playing well.

I was sorry to see the Blackhawks’ season end so soon. I thought they had a good team, but I’m hopeful that my favorite Blackhawks, winger Marian Hossa (Jan. 12, 1979) and defenseman Michal Roszival (Sept. 3, 1978) will be back with the team next year and have good seasons.

At this point, if you were born in the 1970s, I don’t care what team you play for, I’m happy if you succeed. If somebody somewhere is close to my age and still playing pro sports, it only reinforces the fact that I’m not really that old.

Unfortunately, I haven’t had a favorite Bears player since longtime long-snapper Patrick Mannelly (April 18, 1975) left the team. My favorite NFL quarterback is New England’s Tom Brady, who was born in Aug. 3, 1977, (three months before me) and has been treated terribly by the NFL. In the NBA, it’s San Antonio’s Tim Duncan, who turned 40 in April

and is in the playoffs with the Spurs.

Overall, my favorite player right now is probably Ross, the Cubs catcher, whom his teammates call “grandpa.” He’s eight months older than me and probably was a whole year ahead of me in school.

On Wednesday, he was the starting catcher in Pittsburgh and went 0 for 2 with a couple of walks. He’s hitting .250 on the year and has 8 RBIs and 2 home runs, and it’s only May. (Actually, he’s a career .229 hitter, so there might be some regression to the mean, but whatever.)

What matters is that even though the kids call him grandpa, Ross and other players closing in on the end of their 30s are still out there, plugging away.

So long as there are pro athletes out there older than I am – that’s a good sign.

TODAY’S TALKER IT’S STAR WARS DAY: MAY THE 4TH BE WITH YOU

It’s not a national holiday, yet it might be an intergalactic one.

May the Fourth, as in “May the Fourth Be With You” has become a day to celebrate all things Star Wars, especially after last year’s revival of the series with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

One the stars of the current Star Wars trilogy, Daisy Ridley, appeared in a YouTube video surrounded by some of the series’ characters to deliver well wishes from the cast of “Star Wars: Episode VIII,” which is set for release next year.

As with many Star Wars characters, “May the Fourth” comes with an interesting origin story. One of the earliest known references to the day came after the May 4, 1979, election of Margaret Thatcher as Britain’s prime minister, according to a post on the official Star Wars website.

Thatcher’s party took out an ad in the London Evening News with the message, “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations,” the website said, adding that the day took off once the Internet began connecting fans.

Canada geese and gosling always have right-of-way

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – If the question is, why did the Canada geese cross the road?

The answer is pretty simple: They have a right to. No joke.

The dark-plumed birds, easily identified by their long black necks and distinct white patch, congregate along local ponds and shorelines – or wherever else they want. They’re fiercely protective of their young, and are known for leaving their droppings all over lawns, sidewalks and anywhere they congregate.

“The city (of DeKalb) does absolutely zero with Canada geese,” said Mark Espy, director of street operations with DeKalb. “The Canada goose is a federally protected migratory bird. It’s very difficult to do [anything about them] without violating (federal) rules and regulations.”

Espy points out that the water basins the geese hang around are mostly privately owned, and shooing them away would be up to those owners anyway.

State laws also protect the ubiquitous – and often aggressive – waterfowl, who tend to step into roadways with their goslings in tow. They seem to do it willy nilly, and without any regard for vehicles.

“In town ... you tend to have more conflicts between motorists and geese,” said Nathan Schwartz, the DeKalb County engineer.

Gaggles are common in metro areas such as DeKalb, according to municipal officials and ornithologists, and make their home near waterways and sloping grassy areas.

That is likely why motorists often find themselves yielding to the feathered flocks near shopping strips along Sycamore Road. There are a few retention ponds near there.

“Just like any other animal, don’t hit them. Try to avoid them in a safe manner,” Schwartz said.

Also, the geese hover near the DeKalb Park District’s golf course.

They seem don’t seem bothered by pedestrians, bikers or skateboarders on the NIU campus, too. At least one group there started a social media site where people could vent about the geese.

Canada geese can grow to be a whopping 24 pounds – a pretty juicy bird, as birds go, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The reason they’re usually seen in the same places around town has to do their habits: They tend to return to familiar spots.

And scientists point that their presence attracts more geese, which makes brings to mind the old adage, “birds of a feather ... .”

With a lifespan of about 20 years, and with as many as eight goslings hatching at a time during mating season, the geese show signs they are here to stay. There doesn’t seem much that irritated motorists or residents

can do.

Canada geese can fly away on their own – if they choose to – in the winter.

But state law prohibits relocating them.

Illinois Department of Natural Re-

sources spokesman Chris Young said the Canada geese can be hunted. But there are specific venues and rules for taking aim at them. Canada goose hunting season in northern Illinois is in September.

NIU releases Program Prioritization recommendations from task forces

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Recommendations from a program self-assessment report Northern Illinois University issued Monday have some faculty concerned and left leaders of one student group feeling blindsided.

But NIU Provost and Executive Vice President Lisa Freeman cautioned that the reports did not represent a definite course of action.

“The suggestions put forward are just that, suggestions,” Freeman said.

In October 2014, NIU began a self-analysis of its academic and administrative programs called Program Prioritization, with the goal of figuring out which ones could be enhanced, left unchanged, consolidated, overhauled or eliminated.

Freeman’s office has led the effort.

The report suggested that of the 223 academic programs the state’s third-largest public university offers, 56 percent of them should be changed by investing less in them or, in some cases, ending them altogether. That was also the recommendation for 142 of the 236 administrative programs – including the bursar’s office, student services and mentor programs.

Freeman said in the short time the reports have been out, she has heard praise that they are in-depth and substantive. Students, faculty and staff have until May 23 to give feedback on the data.

Still, members of the faculty union that is in the process of forming are balking at some of the recommendations, especially those they say could lead to job loss and the university having increasingly fewer tenured and tenure-track faculty.

Northern Illinois University Program Prioritization An administrative task force working on the project recommended several student programs be looked at for possible transformation, termination, or folding into another program deemed similar: Organization: Task force recommendation Asian American Center: “The narrative for this program indicated a strong focus on recruiting and retaining international students, which duplicates the functions of the International Student and Faculty Office and does not appear to be necessary.”

Center for Black Studies: “The task force recommends considering dividing the Center for Black Studies into separate academic and administrative units, similar to other diversity units on campus.”

Latino Resource Center: “The Latino Resource Center is important because of the rising Latino/Latina population. However ... this program does not appear to have a strong impact on the success rate of the students it serves, as seen through the decreasing number of degrees received by this population.”

Black Male Initiative: “Because may of the services provided by this office duplicate those provided by other campus offices, the task force believes that this program’s services should be absorbed by those programs.”

NIU Press: “The ability of the NIU Press to generate outside revenue and rely less on university resources is highly unlikely. This program may be a non-essential service that the university cannot afford to afford.”

“We should fight for keeping faculty positions that have whittled down mercilessly in the past 10 years,” said Rosemary Feurer, NIU associate professor of history. “We are adamant that this is part of a collective bargaining context.”

Members of the task force that reviewed NIU’s academic programs made a recommendation that tenured faculty be retained.

“While recognizing the valuable and often high-quality contributions of instructors, teaching assistants, adjunct faculty and other members of the instructional faculty, the long-term success of academic programs is dependent on the presence of tenure-track faculty with active research agendas and a com-

mitment to the health of their program and the institution,” the task force stated in its report.

Tenured teachers have less fear of losing their jobs and are usually awarded more academic autonomy, academicians note.

As university officials heaped praise on the reports, each about 90 pages, Feurer said they contain some murkiness.

“We have a right to know what resources are available and to bargain over those resources,” she said, adding she expects the union will be up and running long before July 15.

That is the scheduled date for another report to be created that will be presented to NIU President Doug Baker. It would

contain additional recommendations that he would act on and recommend to the board of trustees for approval.

“I think our faculty are anxious for no reason,” Freeman said. “For programs to actually be eliminated, there’s a significant curricular process that takes around nine months that has to be gone through.”

Still, Jacob Clayton said he was surprised to hear about a recommendation to have the Black Male Initiative program folded in with others the task force believed were similar.

“Because many of the services provided by this office duplicate those provided by other campus offices ... the task force believes this program’s services should be absorbed by those programs,” the report said.

But Clayton, the initiative president, called his organization one of NIU’s most popular and effective.

“I don’t think that there is anything that this institution can do to eliminate Black Male Initiative, as a whole,” said Clayton, who will graduate May 14.

“President Doug Baker sees the work that we do. We also work very closely with the police chiefs, and they, themselves, then mentor our organization.”

Freeman explained that the task force was not recommending that one student program be closed over others, but more that the university look at all of its diversity and inclusion programs, “and see if we were doing things as effectively as we could.”

Freeman said that if the university were to act on any of the report recommendations, a time frame for implementing changes could range from as soon as the start of the 2017 school year in August to five years from now.

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Eric Dannenmaier is expected to become the next dean of the Northern Illinois University College of Law after accepting an offer from the school, officials announced Tuesday.

Dannenmaier comes to NIU from Indiana University’s McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis, where he teaches law classes in property, natural resourc-

es, water law and the Constitution. He also serves as director of J.D. graduate programs and is the founding director of the Environmental, Energy and Natural Resources Law Program.

Lisa Freeman, executive vice president and Eric Dannenmaier provost, said she’s excited to welcome him to NIU. “Eric Dannenmaier is well-posi-

tioned to work with students, faculty and staff to enhance the reach and reputation of NIU’s law school,” Freeman said in a news release.

According to the release from NIU, Dannenmaier’s research focuses on environmental democracy. He has also researched and published on legal and institutional frameworks for sustainable development, water security and energy policy.

Dannenmaier said he was excited to

join the NIU community.

“The NIU College of Law’s commitment to diversity and the public interest, and the resources it devotes to experiential learning, interdisciplinary inquiry and specialized legal studies are essential ingredients for preparing the next generation of lawyers and leaders,” Dannenmaier said in a news release.

The NIU board of trustees will consider Dannenmaier’s appointment at its next meeting May 19.

Give Local DeKalb County Sycamore City Council tables overcomes some tech issues decision on annexation accord

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – After technical glitches Tuesday, Give Local DeKalb extended its 24-hour online giving challenge into a second day and donors continued to give.

Donors had contributed about $33,000 from midnight to about 1 p.m.

Wednesday, in addition to the money that was donated Tuesday.

The Give Local DeKalb County website put the unofficial total raised at $269,503 as of Wednesday afternoon.

That money was from 1,776 gifts; it didn’t include $103,750 in proportional matching funds.

Kimbia, the third-party vendor responsible for Give Local websites across the country, said that its servers were overwhelmed by high donation traffic.

“We are sorry,” the company said on its website. “The past 10 hours have been some of the most painful of our lives. We have let you down, the people we serve. We do not take any

of your comments and concerns lightly, and we will work tirelessly to earn back your trust in our capabilities.

We understand the frustration this day has caused and it is our sincere hope that people will rally together to continue to show love and support to their favorite nonprofits all over the nation.”

Kimbia has said that donor data is safe and secure.

The technical issues didn’t appear to dampen the enthusiasm of donors in DeKalb County. About 300 people turned out Tuesday night to watch an elaborate light show at the DeKalb County Community Foundation, DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership Manager Ben Bingle said. More than 60 local nonprofit groups participated in this year’s campaign.

“The nonprofit community has been very responsive and donors have been very understanding,” Bingle said Wednesday afternoon.

Bingle said the total amount of money raised during the campaign won’t be known for some time.

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The Sycamore City Council will vote May 16 on an annexation agreement that would allow residential development in a 300-acre rural area northwest of the city.

Aldermen unanimously agreed Monday to table the decision while the city’s planning commission amends an easement agreement with the Sycamore Sportsman’s Club, City Manager Brian Gregory said.

The agreement declares that no property owners on the annexed land will file complaints of nuisance or trespass resulting from noise at the firing range.

The recorded easement will also include a provision regarding the payment of attorney fees in the event of unsuccessful litigation, city documents show.

Council members at an April 18 meeting reviewed the resubmitted annexation agreement, which has

been a point of contention since its original draft was submitted in the fall of 2015. Establishing the annexation agreement is the first step toward allowing potential development.

If the city agrees to annex the land, builders would be required to submit concept plans for houses on the property, which would then be reviewed by the city’s planning commission before action is taken by the council.

The city has made it a goal to allow low-density development in the area for years.

Council members approved the Northwest Sub Area Plan in February 2011 to allow a rural subdivision north and west of Motel Road.

Six property owners last fall submitted annexation agreements for the council to consider, with a recommendation from the Sycamore Planning Commission.

Council members turned down the annexation plan after a number of concerns surrounding the area’s zoning regulations.

The federal government blames an Elgin-based company, with a location in Genoa, for having poor safety protocols at the time of an incident that cost a worker six of his fingers.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced Wednesday that Custom Aluminum Products has been cited for “one willful and one serious safety violation” after the Nov. 4, 2015, incident at the company’s Elgin location.

The 21-year-old temporary employee had only been working there for four weeks when his hands got caught in an aluminum press, according to a written statement from OSHA’s office in Aurora.

The man lost his ring, middle and index fingers on both hands and part of his right pinkie finger.

“It’s hard to imagine the agony and pain this young man suffered when six of his fingers were amputated,” said Jack Scott, area OSHA director.

OSHA claims the press didn’t have required safe guarding devices.

“These devices would have prevented his hands from coming in contact with the operating parts of the machine,”

County drug court supporters to host Recovery Run

DeKALB – The Friends of DeKalb County Drug/DUI Court is hosting its inaugural Recovery Run on Saturday.

The nonprofit organization will host the 5K run and walk at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Hopkins Park, 1403 Sycamore Road, DeKalb.

The organization was created raise funds and support the DeKalb County Drug/DUI Court programs, Drug/DUI Court Coordinator Mike Douglas said.

Advence registration, which includes a T-shirt, is $25 for adults and $12 for children 12 and younger. Registration will be allowed up until a few minutes before the race. Registration on the day of the race is $30 for adults.

A GoFundMe page has been established for those who would like to support the program, but can’t attend the event. The page had raised $300 toward its goal of $1,000 from six people as of Wednesday. About 70 people are expected to take part in the Recovery Run on Saturday, Douglas said. For information, visit www.dekalbcodrugcourt.com.

SYCAMORE – A Chicago man posted bond and was released from jail Wednesday after police said they found nearly 2 ounces of marijuana in his vehicle.

Hassan Coleman, 24, of the 7800 block of South Euclid Avenue, Chicago, was is charged with unlawful possession of a marijuana, and could face one to three years in prison if he is convicted.

A drug investigator with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office pulled Coleman over at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 900 block of Fotis Drive, DeKalb, court records show.

Although he was originally stopped for having something hanging from his rear-view mirror, and driving with his registration light out, police found almost 2 ounces of marijuana in the vehicle, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan said.

Coleman’s arrest was not part of an ongoing investigation and the involvement of a drug investigator was merely coincidental, Sullivan said.

Coleman posted $300 bail and was released from jail Tuesday. He is due back in court July 8.

Illinois weighs change to child sex abuse law

SPRINGFIELD – A state lawmaker and former prosecutor wants to eliminate the statute of limitations on child sex crimes in Illinois, a response to the hush-money case against former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert.

Before being sentenced last week to 15 months in prison for breaking federal banking rules, Hastert admitted to sexually abusing teenagers decades ago when he coached high school wrestling in Yorkville. Prosecutors said Hastert, 74, paid $3.5 million to silence one accuser who testified in court, but he couldn’t be prosecuted for the underlying sex abuse because too much time had passed.

The plan by state Sen. Scott Bennett, a Champaign Democrat, would end the statute of limitations on child sex crimes, much as there is no limit on how long prosecutors can pursue charges for some other violent crimes such as murder.

Analysis adds fuel to fight over Illinois school funding

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration on Wednesday released an analysis of a Democratic plan to change the way Illinois funds education, prompting more Republican criticism that it’s a “major bailout” for Chicago Public Schools and fueling an increasingly contentious election-year fight.

The bill sponsor, Democratic Sen. Andy Manar of Bunker Hill, called the analysis flawed. He also criticized Rauner and other Republicans for being unwilling to change a funding system “that’s completely broken and rotten at its core.”

“We’re going to move forward with or without the governor,” Manar said. “He can choose to lead, or he can choose to take the path of opposition to reforming school funding in

Rauner is pushing a plan that would increase school funding by providing the full per-pupil amount of state aid to districts for the first time in seven years.

But his proposal would keep the current school funding formula largely intact.

Under Rauner’s plan, Chicago schools would receive about $74 million less in state aid next year compared with the current year.

Manar said his plan would make funding more equitable by, among other things, taking into consideration a district’s local property tax wealth when distributing state funds.

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin prosecutors filed charges Wednesday against a 20-yearold man accused of killing a

Hays opened fire on the family’s BMW sedan, hitting Czaczkowski in the neck, according to investigators.

Police later stopped the Blazer with a spike strip and shot Hayes after he emerged with a gun, according to officers.

Investigators believe the shooting was random.

Czaczkowski’s husband works for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, but authorities have said there is no indication the family was targeted.

Youth home worker pleads not guilty in teen’s death

WAUKEGAN – A man who worked at a residential facility for troubled children in Lake Villa has pleaded not guilty to fatally choking a 16-year-old Chicago boy who lived there.

James Davis of Round Lake entered the plea Tuesday in Lake County court to charges of involuntary manslaughter and obstruction of justice.

The teen, Shaquan Allen, was living at the Allendale Association in Lake Villa. Police said Davis and another employee struggled with the boy while responding to a “behavioral issue,” resulting in Davis putting him into a chokehold. The boy was pronounced dead at a hospital March 30. Police said the employees tried to pass the incident off as an accident by saying the boy slipped and struck his head.

Trump’s path to nomination causes agony for some in GOP

WASHINGTON – Donald Trump’s last Republican foe, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, ended his quixotic presidential campaign Wednesday, cementing Trump’s remarkable triumph as his party’s presumptive nominee and launching him toward a likely fall battle with Hillary Clinton. Some Republican leaders began reluctantly rallying around Trump, but others agonized over their party’s future.

The billionaire businessman vowed to unite the splintered GOP, even as he was bitingly dismissive of members who have been critical of his campaign.

“Those people can go away and maybe come back in eight years after we served two terms,” he said on NBC’s “Today” Show. “Honestly, there are some people I really don’t want.”

Trump’s challenge in uniting Republicans was abundantly clear Wednesday. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell issued a frosty statement saying he had committed to backing the GOP nominee and noting Trump’s “obligation” to bring the party together. And in a remarkable move, the last two Republicans to occupy the Oval Office – President George H.W. Bush and President George W. Bush – made clear they would not help Trump win the White House.

Clinton, in her first remarks since Trump’s new status was crystallized, said she was more than prepared to handle the kind of deeply personal attacks that helped defeat Trump’s Republican rivals.

“To me, this is the classic case of a blustering, bullying guy,” the all-but-certain Democratic nominee told CNN. The long and chaotic Republican primary came to an abrupt end after Trump’s decisive victory Tuesday in Indiana. His win pushed Tex-

He flouted political decorum with controversial statements about women and minorities, leaving some Republicans convinced he won’t be able to cobble together the diverse coalition needed to win the general election.

“It’s his party between now and November, but I don’t think it’s going to be his party after November,” said Peter Wehner, a former adviser to President George W. Bush. Wehner is among the Republicans vowing to never vote for Trump, even if that means essentially handing Clinton the presidency.

Ben Sasse and former Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn as possible candidates for a third-party or independent bid. But that is a long shot at best, with filing deadlines for getting on state ballots fast approaching.

There was notable silence from House Speaker Paul Ryan, who has spoken critically of Trump. Aides to both Ryan and McConnell said the Republican leaders had not spoken with Trump since his Indiana victory.

A spokesman for George W. Bush said the he “does not plan to participate in or comment on the presidential campaign.” And a spokesman for Bush’s father said simply, “At age 91, President Bush is retired from politics.”

Still, several GOP governors and senators said they would support Trump.

New federal rule would permit the deaths of thousands of eagles

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration is revising a federal rule that allows wind-energy companies to operate high-speed turbines for up to 30 years, even if it means killing or injuring thousands of federally protected bald and golden eagles.

Under the plan announced Wednesday, wind companies and other power providers could kill or injure up to 4,200 bald eagles a year without penalty – nearly four times the current limit.

Golden eagles could only be killed if companies take steps to minimize the losses, for instance, by retrofitting power poles to reduce the risk of electrocution.

Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe said the proposal will “provide a path forward” for maintaining eagle populations while also spurring development of a pollution-free energy source that’s intended to ease global warming, a cornerstone of President Barack Obama’s energy plan.

Ashe said the 162-page proposal would protect eagles and at the same time “help the country reduce its reliance on fossil fuels,” such as coal and oil, that contribute to global warming.

“There’s a lot of good news in here,” Ashe said in an interview, calling the plan “a great tool to work with to further conservation of two iconic species.”

The proposal sets objectives for eagle management, addresses how bird populations will be monitored and provides a framework for how the permitting system fits within the agency’s overall

eagle management, Ashe said.

Wind farms are clusters of turbines as tall as 30-story buildings, with spinning rotors as wide as a passenger jet’s wingspan. Blades can reach speeds of up to 170 mph at the tips, creating tornado-like vortexes.

The Fish and Wildlife Service estimates there are about 143,000 bald eagles in the U.S., and 40,000 golden eagles.

It’s unclear what toll wind energy companies take on eagle populations.

Ashe said as many as 500 golden eagles a year are killed by collisions with wind towers, power lines, buildings, cars and trucks.

Thousands more are killed by gunshots and poisonings.

Reporting of eagle mortality is voluntary, and the Interior Department refuses to release the information.

Wednesday’s announcement kicks off a 60-day comment period. Officials hope to issue a final rule this fall.

The plan was developed after a federal judge in California blocked a 2013 rule that gave wind energy companies a 30year pass to kill bald and golden eagles.

U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh ruled in August that the Fish and Wildlife Service failed to follow environmental procedural requirements in issuing the 2013 directive. The agency had classified its action as an administrative change from a 2009 rule, excluding it from a full environmental review.

The agency adopted the 30-year rule as a way to encourage the development of wind energy, a key source of renewable power that has nearly tripled in output since 2009.

Alberta declares emergency as fires threaten town The ASSOCIATED PRESS FORT McMURRAY, Alberta – Alberta declared a state of emergency Wednesday as crews frantically held back wind-whipped wildfires that have already torched 1,600 homes and other buildings in Canada’s main oil sands city of Fort McMurray, forcing more than 80,000 residents to flee.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said fire had destroyed or damaged an estimated 1,600 structures. Flames are being kept from the downtown area thanks to the “herculean’” efforts of firefighters, said Scott Long of the Alberta Emergency Management Agency. No injuries or fatalities have been reported.

The fire appeared near the airport late Wednesday. All commercial flights in and out of Fort McMurray have been suspended.

Unseasonably hot temperatures combined with dry conditions have transformed the boreal forest in much of Alberta into a tinder box. Fort McMurray is surrounded by wilderness in the heart of Canada’s oil sands – the third largest reserves of oil in the world behind Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.

Danielle Larivee, Alberta’s minister of municipal affairs, said the fire is actively burning in residential areas.

Smoke fills the air and trees burn Tuesday in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The entire population of the Canadian oil sands city of Fort McMurray has been ordered to evacuate as a wildfire whipped by winds engulfed homes and sent ash raining down on residents.

More than 250 firefighters are battling the blaze. Fatalities have been reported from a collision on a nearby highway, but she was unaware if it was related to the evacuation or fire.

There were haunting images of scorched trucks, charred homes and telephone poles, burned out from the bottom up, hanging in the wires like lit-

tle wooden crosses.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley flew up to survey the situation, while officials in the evacuation center had to bolt to the south of the city as flames edged closer.

Notley tweeted pictures of the fire from above. “The view from the air is heartbreaking,” she wrote.

The blaze effectively cut Fort McMurray in two Tuesday, forcing about 10,000 north to the safety of oil sands work camps.

The other 70,000 or so were sent streaming south in a bumper-tobumper snake line of cars and trucks that stretched beyond the horizon down Highway 63. Some vehicles sat in ditches, the victims of engine trouble or a lack of gas.

Firefighters were working to protect critical infrastructure, including the only bridge across the Athabasca River and Highway 63, the only major route to the city in or out.

Notley called it the biggest evacuation in the history of the province.

Federal Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale called it one of the largest fire evacuations in Canadian history, if not the largest. “It’s a community of 88,000 people that’s been totally evacuated,” Goodale said. “This is going to take a while to recover.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said while the full extent of the damage isn’t yet known he called it “absolutely devastating” and said there’s a loss on a scale that’s hard to imagine.

Trudeau said he’s offered the province his government’s full support. He encouraged Canadians to support friends and donate to the Red Cross.

DAMASCUS, Syria – Sporadic violence persisted in Aleppo on Wednesday as U.S. officials announced an agreement had been reached with Russia to extend Syria’s fragile cease-fire to the deeply contested northern city. The Syrian military said the truce would last only 48 hours.

Restoration of a partial truce would bring relief to residents on both sides of Syria’s largest city after two weeks of relentless violence that has killed nearly 300 people, destroyed hospitals and brought it to the brink of humanitarian disaster.

It was not immediately clear whether the new effort will be observed or for how long. The U.S. and Russia finalized a nationwide cease-fire in late February, but have struggled to make it stick.

The agreement was reached late Tuesday and took effect at 12:01 a.m.

Wednesday Damascus time, Secretary of State John Kerry said.

Since the truce began, “we have seen an overall decrease in violence ... even though there are some reports of continued fighting in some locations, which does not surprise us because it only went into effect one minute after

only 48 hours. It did not elaborate and there was no immediate explanation for the discrepancy.

Rebels fighting in Aleppo did not immediately react to the news. But Kurdish forces said the besieged, predominantly Kurdish neighborhood of Sheikh Maqsoud appeared to be excluded, saying that opposition forces shelled the district Wednesday evening, killing one person and wounding five.

The cessation of hostilities doesn’t apply to the Islamic State group or the Nusra Front, al-Qaida’s Syria affiliate, which operate in parts of Aleppo.

In some battles in Aleppo and elsewhere, Western and Arab-backed militants have fought alongside those swearing allegiance to al-Qaida, making it hard to determine whether Syrian government offensives or Russian airstrikes against them constitute violations. Such dynamics could cause any cease-fire to easily unravel again, particularly with no clear mechanism for control or accountability.

Kerry and the U.N. envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, said last week that the U.S. and Russia had agreed to assign additional personnel to Geneva to work around the clock to create a better mechanism for monitoring a new cease-fire.

Plan to convert Fargo Hotel into apartments will be for the best Plans to convert the Jane Fargo Hotel at 355 W. State St. in Sycamore into an upscale apartment complex are a good way to ensure the property remains a viable and vibrant part of the city’s downtown.

The building was built as a hotel around Mary Whittemore’s home in the 1920s, but it has struggled to be profitable through multiple changes in ownership.

The hotel was not failing to attract lodgers because it was too lavishly appointed.

At this point in its life, the building is in need of major repairs, including an estimated $1 million worth of interior renovations.

The hotel’s banquet facility, which has played host to so many community events over the decades, has outlived its usefulness, as has the house that the hotel was built around. These buildings are part of Sycamore’s past, and their existence has been photographed and documented. Now we can bid them farewell.

Not every building or business has centuries-long staying power. It is OK to let some things go.

This is the conclusion that Sycamore’s City Council members arrived at this week when they approved plans to convert the hotel into apartments and demolish the old Whittemore house to make room for resident parking.

They were correct.

The corner is a high-visibility location, and it would not do to have the property sit vacant.

Renovating the building for use as apartments with commercial space on the lower levels seems a prudent plan – having people living in and around a walkable downtown area helps downtown businesses thrive.

Developer John Pappas has already completed a similar project at the former Fargo Motors site, which he demolished in 2012 with some help from city tax-increment funds, replacing it with a building at 427 W. State St. that is a nice addition to the area.

City Council members have decided that it is in the city’s best interest to invest public funds in the Jane Fargo building as well, rather than risk having the hotel shuttered and potentially fall into disrepair.

They have pledged $100,000 to the project, with the funds coming from proceeds of sales-tax revenue collected from the sales of jet fuel by United and American Airlines.

City officials point out that if the property was a block to the west, the expenses could be reimbursed with tax-increment financing proceeds.

“We have an interest in this,” Mundy told reporter Katie Smith at Monday’s City Council meeting.

He’s right.

In this case, the money will be granted to the developer on a reimbursement basis after the work is complete, and it would seem as though the city will see a return on its investment through increased sales taxes generated by downtown businesses and growth in property value.

The renovation and repurposing of the Jane Fargo Hotel should be a positive addition to the downtown area and could help build momentum for other new business development there.

To the Editor: The logic-defying rise of Donald Trump as the probable Republican candidate for president has been destructive to the cause of liberty as well as downright depressing.

In this primary race Republicans had some very good candidates to choose from, a much better slate than in 2008 or ‘12.

With a lying crook (who is facing possible indictment) and a communist control freak as the Democrats’ choices, this was our election to win.

But for reasons that make no sense, a sizable minority of Republicans have chosen not to use their brains and willfully ignore the many awful shortcomings of this orange charlatan known as The Donald.

Not only is he obnoxious and rude but he has flip-flopped on issues over and over again, often taking the liberal side.

Recently he changed his mind on abortion penalties and Planned Parenthood funding within a 24-hour period, and he flip-flopped on the flat tax in less than a minute!

This is the man who supported partial birth abortion, universal health care, gun control and had given money to Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer and the Democratic Party. He’s changed political parties five times!

He only changed his tactics recently, not his convictions. His only real conviction is to get

that White House prize.

When I hear the ridiculous reasons Trump fans give for voting for him, it makes me cringe.

They talk about being sick of the establishment GOP led by John Boehner caving in to Obama and ignore the fact that Cruz stood up to Boehner and refused to fund Obamacare and raise the debt ceiling while Trump was agreeing with Boehner.

Cruz was working on building a border wall while Trump was giving money to pro-amnesty politicians, but facts like that don’t faze Trump’s followers.

Too many Republicans are embarrassing the rest of us by choosing a clown who typifies every negative right-wing stereotype imaginable.

A Trump-Clinton race guarantees that the national debt will soar for at least another five years.

Trump supporters have basically squandered a golden opportunity to bring in another Ronald Reagan and shrink the size of government and our national debt.

Many people say that Donald Trump has divided and destroyed the GOP / conservative movement / tea party movement.

But the way I see it, we’re all big boys and girls here and Trump is just one moron.

This division isn’t Trump’s fault, it’s the fault of his supporters.

Trump’s numbers in polls against Hillary Clinton may improve as many Republican voters accept him as their nominee.

(Then again, they may not, depending on whether Democrats quickly start running ads attacking him.)

Some Republican officeholders and voters will still consider Trump unfit for office and no conservative – but his supporters, old and new, will try to shame them into supporting the presumptive nominee.

Newt Gingrich, who has for months been backing Trump without explicitly endorsing him, told Sean Hannity on Tuesday night that if you’re not for him you’re “functionally for Hillary Clinton” and therefore for a “radical Supreme Court.”

Gingrich and other Trump supporters will have to overcome five problems in making this case.

First, Trump himself has said

quite recently that he does not need Republican unity to win the election.

So Gingrich is asking Republican voters who have serious misgivings about Trump to support him even though he himself is hardly asking them to do so.

Second, his most vocal supporters have spent the primaries trashing the Republican Party and declaring anti-Trump conservatives irrelevant. It’s a little late to flip the script now.

Third, the message – vote Trump, you idiot crybabies – may just fall flat because a lot of voters dislike being addressed this way.

Fourth, conservatives don’t have much reason to trust Trump on the Supreme Court.

He has given no indication of caring about judicial conservatism.

If he put up nonconservative nominees, he would win praise for his bipartisanship and could make one of those deals with the Democrats he is always promising.

What would hold him back? His word?

Fifth, and I think most important, Trump may spend much of the campaign too far behind Clinton for all this shaming to have any force.

If the candidates are neck and neck, then maybe Republicans on the fence could be swayed by the argument that they have to vote for Trump or see Clinton in power.

If Trump is behind by eight points, on the other hand, then a lot of Republican voters won’t see themselves as having to make the agonizing choice to back Trump to stop Clinton.

If Clinton has a consistently large lead, Trump won’t get the 90plus percent of the Republican vote that his predecessor nominees got.

A significant fraction of Republican voters will feel free not to vote for Trump because they will assume, accurately, that Clinton will be president whatever they do.

And the root cause of that assumption will be that Trump is such a weak general-election candidate.

In that case, the functional allies of Clinton, the enablers of her judicial nominees, will turn out to have been those, such as Gingrich and Hannity, who helped that weak candidate win the Republican nomination.

Eyes on Cleveland police for Republican convention Cleveland’s proposed $6 million settlement with the family of Tamir Rice is a reminder that its Police Division needs to get its house in order for the Republican National Convention, to be held there in late July.

Tamir Rice was the black 12-yearold fatally shot in 2014 by a white police officer while holding a pellet gun outside a recreation center.

His death was one in a string of incidents damaging police-community relations in Cleveland.

Two weeks after Tamir’s death, the U.S. Justice Department released a report – in the works well

before the youth’s shooting – concluding that Cleveland’s police force “engages in a pattern or practice of the use of excessive force.” Last year, Cleveland agreed to take corrective action.

The $6 million settlement with Tamir’s family, which is pending court approval, would include no admission of wrongdoing by the city.

That itself is a crime.

But lessons learned from Tamir’s death and other incidents should be ingrained in officers in time for the GOP convention, which is expected to draw tens of thousands of visitors. Those numbers likely will in-

clude protesters of various stripes, and the risk of more violence in a campaign season already punctuated by it is very real.

Managing a political convention would be a mighty challenge even for the most respected police department, let alone a troubled one that plans to supplement its ranks with hundreds of officers rented from other communities.

(Recall that the Pittsburgh Police Bureau’s embarrassing handling of the G-20 protests here in 2009 included the use of out-of-town officers who forced a person they arrested to pose for a humiliating “trophy

photo.”)

Political conventions are quadrennial celebrations of our political system, and that system guarantees the right to free speech and other civil rights.

If protesters are violent, police must restrain them while showing restraint themselves.

Cleveland police can regain a measure of public trust by demonstrating professionalism no matter what the Republican convention throws at them.

The nation – and much of the world – will be watching.

In the past four presidential elections, the Republican nominee has never won less than 90 percent of the Republican vote. Republicans won the popular vote only one of those times, in 2004, and when they did they carried 93 percent of Republican voters.

Donald Trump has defied the odds before, but they are against his achieving this degree of party unity.

Trump has won more primary votes than any previous nominee, and he is going to add to that number in the weeks to come.

But he also will be a nominee with a record number of primary votes cast for his opponents.

And to say the race has been divisive is an understatement: The day he clinched the nomination, he suggested, insanely, that Ted Cruz’s father was somehow involved in the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Cruz responded by mentioning that Trump once bragged about his close calls with venereal disease.

A lot of Republican officeholders – past, present and would-be-inthe-future – will rapidly endorse Trump, regardless of what they previously said about his psychological stability, honesty and all-around

DeKALB – In order to get as many points as possible, DeKalb badminton coach Duane Cowley played his top players at singles in tournaments.

But with the Buffalo Grove Sectional at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Cowley has his top four – senior Alyssa Wagner and three sophomores – playing at doubles, which he said gives them the best shot at advancing to state.

“We’ve been trying to score points to be successful as a team, and two singles players can score more than one good doubles team,” Cowley said. “So they’ve played a lot of singles but are very proficient at doubles. They have the physical skills to attack and score points.”

Wagner will be teamed with sophomore Helene Collin, while sophomores Hui Zhu and Holly Trapp will compete in the other doubles spot. Seniors Brenna Parson and Kerstin Thelen will compete at singles.

Wagner said it’s a tricky transition making the move to doubles.

“It’s tough, because I feel like if we started playing doubles at the beginning of the year, we could have been better than we are now,” Wagner said. “So switching from singles to doubles at the end of year is definitely a tough transition.”

All four players have seen time at doubles this year, but Cowley said most of their year has been spent at singles.

“Ultimately, I’d like to know my doubles team right when we walk in the door,” Cowley said. “That’s what they would play every tournament all year long. But it hasn’t been that type of year where we can keep people together and still try to succeed as a team.”

Wagner said she’s optimistic she and Collin can grab one of the four qualifying sports.

The top four singles players will also advance to the state tournament, May 13 and 14 in Charleston.

“It’s kind of nerve-wracking knowing it’s my last year, but I’m kind of pumped,” Cowley said.

“I think we can do it. If we can push hard, we can definitely make it to state.”

Cowley said Buffalo Grove has two tough doubles teams, but Conant, St. Charles North and Wheaton North have beatable teams.

He thinks either of his doubles squads has a chance. “(Wagner) has leaned toward singles her whole career and has become a little more interested in becoming a doubles player this year,” Cowley said. “She’s spent a lot of time outside of practice working on doubles to develop those skills.”

No DeKalb player qualified last year. In 2014, a pair of singles players qualified and in 2013 the Barbs got one singles player through to state.

In addition to saying he thought the singles players had a shot, Cowley said he also liked Trapp and Zhu’s chances as well.

“Alyssa and Helene are a very powerful team,” Cowley said. “They have a lot of smashes and can transition into defense quickly.”

Indian Creek (10-3-3) enters every game with the mindset of spreading the ball around the field and attacking at different angles, according to coach Luke Anderson.

“We try to work the ball towards the weaker side, and it didn’t seem like one side was weaker than the other tonight,” Anderson said. “We didn’t see that so we tried to vary up the attacks and we look for the long ball and crosses. “We definitely played better than our last game,” Taeuber said. “We’ve talked about at this point in the season we need to clean up our game. We as coaches look at that and we had three devastating miscues on the defensive side. We did take advantage on one miscue by their keeper, but other than that it’s such an even game. We had just as many really good opportunities and it’s about finishing them off and preventing those mistakes. This team is really close if we can clean our game up.”

sports@daily-chronicle.com Former Northern Illinois men’s basketball team guard Michael Orris has transferred to South Dakota State for his final season.

Orris, who came to Northern Illinois after one year at Kansas State, played two seasons with the Huskies, who had the best campaign in two decades. However, Orris saw his role begin to diminish with the Huskies touting a freshman group this past season.

Last season, he averaged 21.7 minutes a game – scoring 2.7 points and 3.0 rebounds a game, but struggled beyond

the arc, shooting 5 for 41 (12 percent) from 3-point range.

As a sophomore with the Huskies, Orris averaged 26.2 minutes a game – scoring 3.7 points a game.

Orris joins a Jackrabbits team that went 26-8 overall and 12-4 in the Summit League in the 2015-16 season, making the NCAA Tournament – getting knocked out by Maryland in a 79-74 defeat.

The Jackrabbits are under firstyear head coach T.J. Otzelberger, who replaced Scott Nagy, who took over at Wright State after leading South Dakota State to the NCAA Tournament in three of the past five seasons.

The Huskies played in the Vegas 16 Tournament, which was the first postseason appearance for the team since 1995-96.

The Huskies have already signed three incoming freshmen for the 201617, including two guards – Eugene German (Gary, Indiana) and Nick Wagner (Galesville, Wisconsin). German comes in as a highly touted point guard who is a three-star recruit by Rivals and averaged 33.5 points a game for Gary 21st Century (Class A).

Toward the end of the season, former Northern Illinois senior wing Darrell Bowie announced he transferred to Iowa State.

LGBT laws, NCAA policy could keep teams at home

Teams could pull out of scheduled NCAA events this spring because of new state laws in North Carolina, Mississippi and Tennessee while the sport’s governing body’s demands for discrimination-free environments at the places where its events are held won’t take effect until the fall.

Although there are many potential unknowns before the measure takes effect, 27 NCAA championships are scheduled this spring and some state laws are already on the books. The decision whether to participate are not being made by coaches or

athletic departments.

A Minnesota state university system banned its athletic teams from traveling to tournaments in North Carolina, which passed a law that opponents say can allow discrimination against LGBT people. Most of the schools in the system are Division II or III level; the University of Minnesota, a member of the Big Ten, is not one of them.

The decision means that one of the top baseball teams in Division II, St. Cloud State – ranked No. 3 in one of the top 25 polls – will likely stay home and forgo the opportunity to reach its first Division II World Series later this month in Cary, North Carolina.

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton said system leaders are in the process of reconsidering the ban, and St. Cloud State President Earl Potter is hopeful a resolution is reached.

He said in a statement Wednesday that the school will “not engage in any speculation at this point” because the NCAA “is tracking this situation and is working to determine how many teams might be affected by such bans.”

The NCAA will require sites hosting or bidding on both its predetermined and merit-based events to show how they will provide an environment that is “safe, healthy and free from discrimination.”

• • • After three straight canceled games due to inclement weather, the Kishwaukee baseball team got back on the field Sunday with a 9-1 home win against Harper. Sycamore alumnus and Kougars’ sophomore Cooper Vinz was 1 for 4 with a run and an RBI. Vinz’ teammate Jared Johnson was 0 for 1 with a walk and a sacrifice. The sophomore from DeKalb also stole his 19th base of the season.

• • • The Winona State softball team lost two games in the Northern Sun Inter-

collegiate Conference on Saturday and Sunday.

In a 2-1, eight-inning loss to Upper Iowa, Paige Keegan was 0 for 4, teammate and Allyson O’Herron was 0 for 2.

The Warriors’ offense couldn’t convert for more than one run on their seven hits.

But, Keegan, a junior catcher from Genoa-Kingston, and O’Herron, a junior shortstop from Kaneland, both collected two hits in a 5-3 loss to Northern State in Game 2.

Keegan was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI as she hit her fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh inning.

• • • Valparaiso won two of three games against Oakland this weekend. Sophomore left fielder from Kaneland Lanie Callaghan was 1 for 7 in the three-game set. Callaghan has a .271 batting average on the season.

Veterans have reason to worry with rookie additions

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com As much as players such as Jay Cutler and Charles Leno could breathe easier after the Bears’ draft, others might be a little more uneasy.

No Bears were impacted more by the draft class than Antrel Rolle and Matt Slauson, cut one day after the conclusion of the draft. General manager Ryan Pace selected three defensive backs, signaling the end of Rolle’s brief time with the Bears.

When Ted Larsen and Manny Ramirez signed, Slauson had to be put on notice, and the second-round pick of Cody Whitehair made it a foregone conclusion. Two veteran leaders cut as the Bears moved on to younger – and cheaper – options.

Other players, however, may see a cut into their playing time, or have to compete harder for a roster spot, after seeing the results of the draft.

RB Ka’Deem Carey: To start OTAs, the No. 2 running back position still should be Carey’s to lose. He improved a lot last season and was valuable late in wins over the Chargers, Rams and Buccaneers. However, he was Phil Emery’s draft pick.

Jordan Howard, a bigger northsouth runner, is Pace’s, and the rookie will right away compete with Carey to best complement Jeremy Langford. Carey was a fourth-rounder, Howard a fifth.

Young can match Floyd’s speed off the edge, not to mention a No. 9 overall pick doesn’t sit on the bench. Houston is signed through 2018, with the dead cap money decreasing each year. Young is in the final year of his three-year deal. The Bears are in a good situation with the veterans in case it takes Floyd some time to add the muscle he needs to in order to be a run-defending factor at outside linebacker.

ILBs Christian Jones, John Timu and Jonathan Anderson: The three

inside linebackers who got chances to start last year knew they’d be in reserve, special teams, fighting-forroster-spots roles once the Bears signed Danny Trevathan and Jerrell Freeman. When Pace traded up in the fourth round to draft Nick Kwiatkoski, it added to the competition.

Timu showed plenty of flashes in the last two games, and Anderson was valuable on special teams, so Jones may experience the biggest impact from Kwiatkoski’s presence.

From fourth in the preliminaries to first in the finals, the Iowa women’s sprint medley relay team and Sycamore graduate Lake Kwaza claimed another title Saturday at the Drake Relays.

The Hawkeyes sprint medley team and senior Kwaza, who ran one of the two 200-meter legs, finished with a time of 3 minutes, 52.62 seconds. On deck for Iowa is the Big Ten Championships on May 13-15 at Nebraska.

Also at the Drake Relays, Illinois State freshman Dion Hooker and the Cardinals men’s 400-meter relay team finished third with a time of 40.69 seconds. The Sycamore alumnus is in action next on Friday at the Wisconsin Twilight.

Cubs win, sweep Pirates Ortiz, Red Sox beat White Sox

PITTSBURGH – The Cubs are threatening to run away with the NL Central.

Ben Zobrist hit a three-run home run, Anthony Rizzo also connected and Jon Lester worked out of a pair of jams to lead the Cubs over the second-place Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-2, Wednesday for a three-game sweep.

With its seventh win in eight games, the Cubs improved to a major league-best 20-6. The Cubs have won seven straight road games and completed their first sweep in Pittsburgh since Sept. 7 to 9, 2012. They lead the division by six games.

“We pitched really well in this series. We’ve been doing that the whole year,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “And the offense was good again.

But the part that permits the offense to get into the flow of the game is the pitching’s been so good. That we are able to stay even or most of the times on top of the other side.

“Offensively, we keep having good at bats over the course of the game and then have a chance to work people down by the end. That’s pretty much been the roadmap to this point.”

Zobrist’s third-inning homer put the Cubs ahead after center fielder Andrew McCutchen dropped Rizzo’s twoout liner for an error.

Lester (3-1) scattered eight hits in 52/3 scoreless innings, struck out five and walked two. The left-hander has allowed one run or none in five of six starts this season.

Pittsburgh loaded the bases in the fourth and put runners on first and second in the fifth – both times with no outs. The Pirates have lost four straight after a six-game winning streak.

CHICAGO – David Ortiz hit his 509th home run to put the Boston Red Sox ahead to stay in a 5-2 victory over the White Sox on Wednesday night.

Ortiz’s two-run shot to right field off Carlos Rodon in the fifth inning tied him with Gary Sheffield for 25th all-time. It was the sixth homer of his farewell season and his 451st with Boston, one off Carl Yastrzemski’s club mark.

Ortiz added an RBI single in the seventh against Zach Duke, and embattled Clay Buchholz (1-3) was sharp over seven innings in Boston’s fourth win in five games.

Jose Abreu’s two-run homer in the first was the only blemish for Buchholz, who allowed three hits and struck out six.

Rodon (1-4) gave up three runs and six hits over six innings as the White Sox failed to win their 20th game and match the crosstown Cubs for most wins in the majors.

Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless ninth for his ninth save, after the 40-year-old Ortiz helped Boston break out of its funk against left-handers.

The Red Sox managed four hits off Jose Quintana on Tuesday night, falling to 0-3 against lefty starters.

But Xander Bogaerts had three hits Wednesday, including an RBI single off Rodon in the second.

That was enough in Buchholz’s best outing of the season.

He entered with a 6.51 ERA and Boston had lost all five of his starts, prompting manager John Farrell to say the right-hander needed to “attack the strike zone.”

Abreu crushed Buchholz’s 92 mph fastball an estimated 402 feet to left in the first inning for his fourth homer despite the wind blowing in on a 45-degree night. Abreu has 10 RBIs during his eight-game hitting streak.

Nyquist draws No. 13 post as early 3-1 Kentucky Derby fav

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Doug O’Neill was all smiles after early 3-1 favorite Nyquist drew the No. 13 post for the 142nd Kentucky Derby.

The number with an unlucky reputation didn’t faze the trainer. In fact, it brought back good memories.

Nyquist left from the same spot when he won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last year at Keeneland, part of his 7-0 career record.

“No matter if we drew the one or the 20, the thought is we were going to leave there with the intent of being forwardly placed and just play it by ear,” O’Neill said Wednesday after the post-position draw.

“More than anything, I’m so happy with the way he’s training, the way he’s acting.

He’s thriving on all the positive attention.”

Four horses have won from the No. 13 spot since 1900, most recently Smarty Jones in 2004. O’Neill, jockey Mario Gutierrez and owner Paul Reddam teamed to win the race in 2012 with I’ll Have Another.

“The whole team is pumped up,” O’Neill said. “We’re just very optimistic for a big day.”

Exaggerator drew the No. 11 post and is the 8-1 second choice in the full field of 20 horses for the 11/4-mile race Saturday at Churchill Downs. He’s trained by Keith Desormeaux, whose Hall of Fame brother, Kent, will be aboard.

Horses are loaded into the gate two at a time, starting with posts one and 11, which spend the most time waiting for the start.

“Kent thinks it’s a little disadvantage because we load first in a 20-horse field,” Keith said. “It might be less than perfect but it doesn’t bother me much because

CLEVELAND – J.R. Smith made seven 3-pointers and the Cleveland Cavaliers drained an NBA-record 25 3s in a 123-98 runaway win over the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night in Game 2 of their second-round series.

The Cavs made 18 3-pointers in the first half and added seven more after halftime to embarrass the Hawks, who have lost 10 straight postseason games to Cleveland.

Cleveland’s 25 3s are the most in any game – regular or postseason.

Hornqvist scores in OT, Penguins beat Capitals 3-2

PITTSBURGH – Patric Hornqvist beat Braden Holtby between the legs 2:31 into overtime to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night in Game 4 of the second-round series.

Washington’s Mike Weber tried to clear a shot, but the puck went right to Hornqvist in the circle. He buried it for his fifth goal of the postseason to give the Penguins a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals. Game 5 is Saturday night in Washington.

The Penguins ended an eight-game losing streak in overtime playoff games.

Rock Forward benefit concert DAILY CHRONICLE

The Northern Illinois University chapter of Public Relations Student Society of America will hold its annual Rock Forward benefit concert at 6 p.m. today at Fatty’s Pub and Grill, 1312 W. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb.

The concert is a philanthropic event commemorating those who lost their lives during the 2008 campus shooting.

The event includes prizes and raffles, including the chance to receive an all-expenses paid trip to Riviera Maya, Mexico. The night also will feature a live performance by ’90s cover band Mike and Joe, a bags tournament, and raffles including items donated by local businesses.

Tickets, T-shirts and drink special cups can be purchased at the door. Anyone younger than age 21 is allowed in Fatty’s until 10 p.m.

NIU PRSSA is an organization for students interested in the public relations field. The chapter focuses on expanding education, broadening networks and launching careers in public relations.

Climate film to be screened at DAWC DAILY CHRONICLE

A new film, “Disobedience,” narrated by Bill McKibben, co-founder of 350.org, and Naomi Klein, author of “This Changes Everything,” will be shown Friday at the DeKalb Area Women’s Center.

The film shows the courageous actions taken by regular people in the front lines of the climate crisis on every continent. These people are fed up with the power and pollution of the fossil fuel industry.

The screening will be hosted by 350Kishwaukee, a local group concerned about the climate changes we are now experiencing as these predict more disruptive weather and sea rise over the next decades.

The group advocates that the transformation from fossil fuels to renewable wind and solar energy begin now.

The movie will be shown at 7 p.m. in the meeting room at DAWC, 1021 State St. in DeKalb. Enter the building through the door to the west side of the front stairs.

The Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra will perform its spring concert, “The Majesty of Mahler,” at 7:30 p.m. May 7 in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall at Northern Illinois University.

KSO to perform Mahler’s 2nd Symphony DAILY CHRONICLE The Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra will close its 39th concert season Saturday with its spring concert, “The Majesty of Mahler,” at 7:30 p.m. in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Music Building at Northern Illinois University.

There will be a free pre-concert lecture at 6:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall.

The orchestra, led by Music Director and Conductor Linc Smelser, will be joined by members of the DeKalb Festival Chorus and the Oak Park Chorus to perform Symphony No. 2 in C Minor (“Resurrection”), by Gustav Mahler. This monumental piece of music requires an enlarged orchestral instrumentation of more than 100, plus a large mixed choir and vocal soloists.

Tickets go on sale 30 minutes before the concert.

All seats are general admission (no reserved seating). Individual ticket prices are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors age 62 and older, and $5 for students and children younger than 12.

Wooden Box Theater to present Beatles Nite DAILY CHRONICLE

The Ellwood House Visitor Center in DeKalb will host Wooden Box Theater as they present a live event that will join theatrical performers, fashion models, real estate agents, vendors and live music in their production of “Bring Me To Life: The Sixth Annual Beatles Nite.”

The event will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 7, and co-hosted by newcomers to the group Jacquelyn Krenc, Sarah Lynn Bish, Jessica Lynn, Elaine Lord and Cait Arwen.

Wooden Box Theater blends artists and guest stars from many different genres in an effort to show creativity and boldness, as the Beatles did with their music and performances.

For this particular installment, the team has added Krysta Marie Zelaya as the event’s special guest time keeper, and a pair of area real estate

agents. Annette Siwy of Signature Realty and Michelle Ohlinger of Coldwell Banker will be featured throughout the night in guest-starring roles, as well as on-stage interviews.

Live music will be provided by Cherry Lite featuring Max Dombrowski, Ro Zena, Mia Lynell, Jamie Simon, Christina Antonio, Daerielle Amber, Mitch Munns and Rachael Cozzola, Mia Galindo, Jay Rivi, David Jonsson, Manuel Montalvo’s solo music project Baby Kettle, and the debut of ForeverStardust.

Special guest appearances by small business owners include Chanla Frederickson of Chanla Chau Cosmetics and Mothers Little Helpers founder Jenny Jeep Johnson.

Both appeared at Wooden Box Theater events in 2015, and will continue with the group going forward.

There also will be notable appearances throughout the event on stage by Su-

sie Bellamy, Megan Nash, Jax Verdeana, Courtney Ludwig and Katherine Sonya.

This year’s Beatles event got its name from the Evanescence song, “Bring Me To Life,” in both the general vibe of the event, and inspired by the music video for the song, said event writer Dan Sherrill.

The event also will showcase area belly dance specialist Zephirine Moon Garden for an artistic dance segment.

She has been performing occasionally with Wooden Box Theater since late 2011, as well as with the Prairie Smoke Belly Dance group in area venues. She also will display an array of handmade gifts for sale.

Young string and woodwind players have fun learning and rehearsing duets, rounds or quartets, based on their level and experience. Students refine reading skills, learn more about playing music with others, and gain listening and leadership skills. The workshop begins with a sight-reading party on June 21 from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. There is a final day recital at 11 a.m. in Boutell Concert Hall.

Violin teacher and chamber musician Laurie Rodriguez is the director of the workshops. She has been a private teacher with the NIU Community School for many years and has directed multiple chamber music workshops in Illinois, Utah and Minnesota.

Private lessons are available on many musical instruments, including violin, piano and guitar, as well as banjo, mandolin, flute, saxophone and more. CSA teachers include NIU students and faculty, as well as experienced community-based musicians. Students and teachers meet weekly June 13 through July 31, at a time convenient to both. Community members of all ages and skill levels are invited to brush up skills or try a new instrument.

Music Classes for Young Children

Prelude Class (ages 1 to 3) is a group class with lots of fun for kids and parents. Class activities include music listening, creative movement, songs and lap games. Development Class (ages 3 to 5) builds on the material learned in Prelude Class, adding musical patterns and skills through games, songs, creative movement, percussion instruments, basic music theory and learning about some of the instruments of the orchestra. A parent must accompany the child to each class. Both classes meet on six Saturdays beginning June 25 (no class on July 2). Prelude begins at 10 a.m. and Development begins at 10:35 a.m. Traditional and Suzuki violin instructor, music educator and Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra member Laurie Rodriguez teaches both classes.

Music Classes for Children and Adults

Guitar for Kids provides children ages 8 to 12 with an introduction to guitar playing through a fun, song-oriented approach to learning.

Guitar Basics is a beginning class for ages 13 to adult where students learn to read music, play songs, and construct and play scales and chords, in addition to learning about music theory and exploring various styles of guitar techniques.

In Intermediate Guitar, students develop different styles of playing, continue to learn music theory, and build more advanced playing techniques.

These classes meet for six Wednesdays beginning June 15 (no class meeting July 6), see the website for class meeting times. Associate level instructor Quentin Dover is an accomplished guitar

teacher, with many years of experience working with students of all ages, both privately and in a group setting.

Adult Piano is a beginning group piano class for ages 13 to adult. Bring the joy of piano music to your life and enjoy getting to know fellow musicians in this beginning class. Learn simple tunes and basic skills such as reading music and chords.

Every student plays on a keyboard in a piano classroom. Adult Piano class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 14 through June 30, from 6:15 to 6:55 p.m. Associate level piano and harp instructor Jaina Krueger instructs.

Qi Gong (or Chi-Kung) is a precursor of Tai Chi. For ages 12 to adult, this class will focus on 24 postures divided into three sets. These exercises can be done at one time during a day or interspersed amid practice sessions, rehearsals, etc. to renew energy, release tension, and enable greater relaxation and concentration when practiced immediately before a performance. Taught by Eric Schroeder, this class meets for six Mondays starting June 13 (no class on July 4).

Ensembles

NIUkulele Ensemble is a fun group designed for beginning and intermediate ukulele players ages 9 to adult. Students learn to play melodies, chords and songs in many styles, and to perform solo, in unison and in harmony. Beginners receive instruction on the ukulele and players with more experience are assigned more challenging parts. Associate level guitar teacher Eric Schroeder directs the group, bringing his many years of experience teaching private and group lessons to the ensemble. Group rehearsals begin June 13 for six Mondays from 7 to 7:55 p.m. (no rehearsal on July 4) with a concert in the Recital Hall on the final night.

CSA Guitar Ensemble provides an opportunity for guitarists to play together in an ensemble setting while gaining confidence and skill on the instrument. Designed for beginning and intermediate players ages 14 to adult, the group meets for six Wednesdays beginning June 15 from 8 to 8:55 p.m. (no rehearsal on July 6). On the final night a recital is scheduled at 8 p.m. Associate level instructor Quentin Dover is the ensemble director.

Power walk to spark weight loss Dear Dr. K: When I first started walking for exercise, I lost some weight. Since then, my weight has plateaued. How can I adjust my walking routine to start losing weight again?

Dear Reader: To reignite your weight loss, you need to keep challenging your body. That means walking farther, faster and more often. The more vigorous your workout, the longer you’ll continue to burn calories after you stop exercising.

The number of calories you burn increases as you go faster. But despite what you might think, taking longer strides is not the best way to speed up. Rather, taking quicker steps with good posture (keeping your head up and not bending over) and proper technique (bending your arms and rolling your feet from heel to toe) are the foundation for improving your pace. Once you’ve mastered these basics, the following tips will help you turn up your speed even more: • Power your arm swing. Many people punch their arms forward when they walk. But you’ll get more speed and power if you focus on your back muscles.

Squeeze your shoulder blades and drive your elbows behind you, keeping them close to your body. Pull your arm back far enough so your hand just passes your hip. Then let your arm swing naturally forward to chest height as you pull the other one back.

• Squeeze your glutes. Each time your heel strikes the ground, squeeze your buttock muscles. This technique naturally shortens your stride.

• Loosen up your hips. When you feel like you’re walking so fast you want to run, it’s time to get your hips in on the action. You want your hips moving forward and backward – not side to side. As your

• Count your steps for one minute at any point during your walk. Then speed up to see if you can take more steps during the next minute. The more steps you take, the faster you are going.

• Train for strength. Strong leg and buttock muscles power your stride, helping you to achieve higher speeds.

If you’re not up for going fast your entire walk, intervals are a good option.

Alternate fast walking for short periods of time with equal or longer intervals of slower or moderate-paced walking.

The basic idea is pretty obvious: More vigorous exercise leads to more weight loss. What’s less obvious is there are groups of muscles many people don’t use during brisk walking. If you recruit them into your pattern of walking, you’ll use them more and thereby work harder.

Every time I talk about regular exercise, I emphasize the goal is not just achieving a healthy weight. I do think you’ll achieve your weight-loss goals by altering your walking routine the way I describe above. But if you don’t, you still will be greatly reducing your risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke and several kinds of cancer.

When romance intervenes, it is common for teenage girls to focus their attention and energy on the boyfriend and less on their girlfriends. Expecting this girl to be your daughter’s sole support system is unrealistic and unfair to the girl.

Because it is unlikely Cora will find new friends in the context of school, continue to find outside activities that will give her something to do as well as contact with other teens. And, if Cora is open to it, you might consider having her volunteer at an animal rescue group or letting her adopt a pet from a shelter.

Dear Abby: A friend sent me a sample line of face care products from a company she works for. She included a lip balm I used, and sunscreen that contains a chemical to which I am allergic. I offered to send that sample back.

When I researched the ingredients of the other products, I was dismayed to see they contain many chemicals, too. (I try to use organic products as much as possible because I have sensitive skin.) Should I return the whole unused sample kit? I obviously can’t return the lip balm. Or should I just thank her and keep – but not use – them? These are high-end products from Europe, and she has been so “wowed” by them she has become a consultant and is excited to promote them. – Return To Sender?

Dear R.T.S.?: Talk with your friend and thank her for her generosity, but explain you are unable to use the products. Ask if she would like the unused products returned to her and take your cue from her. If she has had to pay for the products she’s representing, she might be glad to have them back to share with others.

My beautiful, kindhearted, loving daughter “Cora” has a “best friend” she used to be very close with. However, her friend now has a boyfriend, so Cora doesn’t see her on weekends or receive texts from her very often anymore. Everything they plan to do together, the girl cancels. My daughter is so distraught it is affecting her emotionally and physically.

Cora has told her friend many times how she feels, but it has made no difference. Her friend promises her things and never follows through.

My daughter suffers from social anxiety, so making a good friend is a rarity for her. I tell her I love her and I’m always here for her, but although Cora sees a therapist, nothing seems to comfort her.

The school she attends stops accepting new students after ninth grade, so there is no chance of her meeting anybody new. We have tried having her join other activities, but they don’t last. I’m desperate to help her. Any advice? –

After West’s one-spade opening bid was passed around to South, he might have jumped to three hearts.

In this balancing position, it would have been an intermediate jump overcall (not weak), showing at least a six-card suit and some 15-17 points.

But it would typically have indicated a stronger suit than this one. North’s three-heart raise was no thing of beauty, with a 10-loser hand, but with four-card heart support, it was hard to pass.

Against four hearts, West leads the spade king. East overtakes with his ace and returns the spade four.

How should West analyze the deal?

West can see a third trick in the club ace, but he should realize that South will know he has the heart king. East passed over one spade and has produced an ace; he cannot have the heart king.

West should see that he has one faint chance. He should cash the club ace (although it isn’t necessary in this deal), then lead his lowest spade.

East, who from the bidding knows his partner has six spades, should see what is required -- he ruffs with the heart eight. This uppercut promotes a trump trick for East-West.
