Schumer: Probe billboards use phone data to track shoppers

NEW YORK – A U.S. senator is calling for a federal investigation into an outdoor advertising company’s latest effort to target billboard ads to specific consumers.

New York Sen. Charles Schumer has dubbed Clear Channel Outdoor Americas’ so-called RADAR program “spying billboards,” warning the service may violate privacy rights by tracking people’s cellphone data via the ad space.

“A person’s cellphone should not become a James Bond-like personal tracking device for a corporation to gather information about consumers without their consent,” Schumer, a Democrat, said in a statement ahead of a planned news conference Sunday in Times Square, where the company operates billboards.

But the company, which operates more than 675,000 billboards throughout the world, argues that characterization of its program is inaccurate, insisting it only uses anonymous data collected by other companies.

In a statement, company spokesman Jason King said the RADAR program is based on a years-old advertising technique that “uses only aggregated and anonymized information” from other companies that certify they’re following consumer protection standards.

King also provided The Associated Press a copy of a letter it sent earlier this year to another lawmaker who has similarly raised concerns

about the ad service and consumer protections.

The company “does not receive or collect personally identifiable information about consumers for use in Radar,” CEO Scott Wells wrote in a March letter to Sen. Al Franken, a Minnesota Democrat. “It’s not necessary for the insights we are offering our advertising customers.”

The ad program is a partnership between Clear Channel and other companies, including AT&T and technology companies that collects location data from smartphone apps, company officials have said.

In a video on its website, the company said it “measures consumers’ real-world travel patterns and behaviors as they move through their day, analyzing data on direction of travel, billboard viewability, and visits to specific destinations.”

Clear Channel uses “aggregate and anonymous mobile consumer information,” the company said. The program gives marketers a “solution that provides a more accurate way to understand and target specific audience segments,” Clear Channel’s vice president, Andy Stevens, said in a news release announcing the initiative in February.

But an investigation into the company is necessary because most people don’t realize their location data is being mined, Schumer said, even if they agreed to it at some point by accepting the terms of service of an app that later sells their location information.

The Federal Trade Commission did not immediately respond requests for comment.

Cinco de Mayo celebration brings fun, education to Sycamore

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Sunday’s gloomy skies and chilly temperatures didn’t keep DeKalb County residents from celebrating Cinco de Mayo at downtown Sycamore’s 19th annual festival of Mexican culture.

From margaritas, tamales and tacos courtesy of Taxco restaurant, to bounce houses, pony rides and a climbing wall for children, families enjoyed an afternoon of Mexican music, folklore dance and fun while mingling with neighbors and several community nonprofit groups. All the proceeds from the event go toward scholarships at Kishwaukee College and to other local nonprofits.

Jesus Romero, owner of Taxco, began the event in 1997 as a way to raise money so he could participate in Relay for Life, and thought it would be a good way to share his Mexican culture and traditions. He decided he wanted to create an event to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, which is a Mexican holiday that commemorates Mexico’s battle over the French on May 5, 1862. The event has grown every year since and now is a community celebration many people look forward to.

“Cinco de Mayo is more than drinking Coronas. It’s for the community to come together and celebrate as a family, while supporting nonprofit organizations,” Romero said. “It’s a privilege for me to be involved with a lot of nonprofit organizations, so it’s important for me to help. We live in a beautiful community where people come together to enhance the quality of life.”

Donna Freed of Sycamore brought her three grandchildren because she knew it would be fun and the kids would enjoy it. Her granddaughter, Gwen Schroeder, braved the climbing wall for the first time Sunday.

“My cousin went on it, and he’s younger than me, so I didn’t want to be a wimp,” said the sixth-grader at Sycamore Middle School. “Once you get that high, it’s scary, but fun at the same time.

But I’d do it again.”

Erin Elder brought her family to downtown Sycamore because they enjoy the Cinco de Mayo celebration every year. She said her favorite part was the food and margaritas.

“It’s a lot of fun, and the food is so delicious. There’s a great ambiance, and the money goes to a good

Her daughter, Eleanor Klacik, said she also has a great time every year.

She didn’t try the climbing wall, but had plenty of fun participating in other events.

“It’s a tradition for us to come here,” said the second-grader at North Grove Elementary. “I got a prize from playing a game, and I ate a churro, which was great. I’m going to ride the ponies, too.”

Brittany Samuelson recently moved to Sycamore with her 5-year old son, Hunter, and she said she wanted to come so he could get outside and play.

“It’s good to have something for the kids to do. He rode the ponies, but the bounce house was his favorite,” she said.

New this year was an appearance by “Elsa” from the popular animated movie “Frozen.” Jessica McClure portrayed the popular Disney character and said she loves meeting all the children.

“It’s wonderful to give kids a little taste of magic and see their eyes light up,” she said. “Elsa is someone they’ve seen on the screen now come to life, and they can see I care about what they have to say. All the little girls are so excited to see me.”

The event couldn’t be possible without the help of volunteers, and Merry Maids owner Jackie Franklin was happy to volunteer Sunday by setting up earlier in the day.

“Events like this bring the community together, and it’s good for kids to be involved,” she said. “The community is like a family, so it’s important to help out.”

Several nonprofit groups lined the streets to promote their services. Erin Tamms, development director at Family Service Agency, said the kids were having fun playing a fishing game, while parents and community members could learn about what the organization

has to offer.

“Kids love the game, and parents can ask questions about who we are. They, or their kids, might be able to utilize our services,” she said.

Firefighters from the Sycamore Fire Department also were on hand to give kids tours of a fire engine. Firefighter Ian Wheeler said it’s good for them to participate in community events such as Cinco de Mayo.

“The more we’re in the public, the more kids see us as a friend to the community,” he said. “They can see that we’re not scary, and they can come to us for help. We’re less of an unknown to them.”

Despite the less-than-ideal weather, Romero was very happy with the turnout and the participation from the community groups and volunteers.

“Seeing the kids have fun is what it’s all about,” he said. “It’s good to see them smiling and being active.”

Annual Kishwaukee YMCA initiative helps get kids active

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – DeKalb and Sycamore children prepared to start their summers on a healthy note during the Kishwaukee YMCA’s annual Healthy Kids Day event Saturday.

More than 300 children ran from blow-up obstacle courses to activity stations run by Northern Illinois University football players to vendors, some of whom gave away health-food samples. Almost 200 people, including NIU students and community members, volunteered to show children how they can spend their time in a productive way over the summer and what the community has to offer, said Heather Dunker, marketing and communications director of the Kishwaukee YMCA. “Over the summer, kids, without school, don’t have access to a lot of different activities, so kids tend to put on weight faster,” Dunker said.

Control and Prevention shows there may be a trend in increased weight gain for children aged 5 to 17 during the summer months. Childhood obe-

sity among those aged 2 to 19 had tripled within three decades to 17 percent in 2009, according to research published by the American Physio-

logical Society.

Healthy Kids Day is a part of a national initiative by the YMCA to improve the health and well-being of children, according to the YMCA website.

Huskies safety Jackson Abresch, who oversaw a bean bag toss activity station Saturday, said it was fun to see the kids running around and being active.

“As a team, we volunteered today to help out with the community,” Abresch said. “It’s a great event just to help out with the kids, to see them be active with a healthy lifestyle.

Born: Nov. 21, 1942 Died: April 26, 2016

Joanne K. Blackwood, 73, of Sycamore, Illinois, passed into the arms of her Savior, Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at her home, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Joanne was born in DeKalb, on Nov. 21, 1942, the daughter of the late Oliver and Ruth (Plapp) Westphal. She was married to Richard Blackwood in 1964.

She was a 1960 graduate of Hinckley-Big Rock High School. Joanne retired from Geneva Eye Clinic.

She enjoyed listening to music, especially country and Elvis. She was also an avid NASCAR and Cubs fan.

Left to cherish her memories are her son, Scott (Nancy) Blackwood of Antioch, TN; daughter, Jodi Knippen of Aurora; proud grandma of grandsons, Kayne and Cole Knippen; sister, Sandy (Dale) Cutsinger of Sugar Grove; and brother, Dwight Westphal of Murphysboro.

She was preceded in death by infant daughter, Vicki; and her parents.

Visitation will be held Saturday, May 7, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb, with a memorial service to follow at 6 p.m. Private family interment will follow at a later date at the East Pierce Cemetery, Maple Park.

JANET HAUGLAND Born: April 28, 1923 Died: April 29, 2016

Janet Haugland, born Janet Hamblin Jensen on April 28, 1923, in Superior, Wisconsin, passed away Friday, April 29, 2016, in the DeKalb Area Retirement Center Oakcrest.

The daughter of James R. and Laura H. Jensen.

Proceeded in death by her husband, A. Oscar Haugland; one brother, Keith H. Jensen; and her parents.

Attended public schools in Superior, Wisconsin, and Superior State College. Graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from University of Wisconsin, Madison. Member of Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternity.

Did graduate work on violin at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, and Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York. Studied violin with Elliot Joelsen, Duluth Symphony; Cecil Burleigh, University of Wisconsin; Robert Quick, Chicago Symphony; Millard Taylor, Rochester Philharmonic; and Samuel Thaviu, Pittsburgh Symphony.

Taught general music and strings in Sparta and Kenosha, Wisconsin; Morgantown, West Virginia; Rochester, New York; and several cities in northern Illinois, while maintaining a private teaching studio.

Played professional violin in symphony orchestras in Duluth, Minnesota; Kenosha, Wisconsin; Clarksburg and Morgantown, West Virginia; and Elgin and St. Charles, Illinois.

Married A. Oscar Haugland Aug. 12, 1950, at First Presbyterian Church, Superior Wisconsin, by her maternal uncles, the Revs. J. Willis Hamblin and Chester Hamblin.

Survivors include daughter, Janet Loerkens (Paul); sons, James and John (Connie); and six grandchildren, Blaz, Zarja, Kelly, Amelia, Solveig, and Anders.

Also survived by sister-in-law, Patricia

Jensen; and nieces, MaryBeth Jensen and Kristen Bessler.

Memorial service will be at Westminster Presbyterian Church, DeKalb, Illinois, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, with the Rev. Blake Richter officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will be private at Fairview Park Cemetery.

MARVEL R. LARSON

Born: Oct. 24, 1919; in Maywood, IL Died: April 15, 2016; in Sandwich, IL Marvel Ruth (Leming) Larson, age 96, of DeKalb, was born on Oct. 24, 1919, in Maywood, the daughter of Edward and Selma Leming. She was in the care of her son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Rhonda, when she peacefully entered her heavenly home on April 15, 2016.

Marvel was the youngest of four children. She graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1941 and taught fourth grade for a year. She married Virgil Espe Larson on June 14, 1942, and together they raised their six children on the family farm near Malta. They were active members of Calvary Lutheran Church (Lee) and the community of Malta. Marvel was only 56 years old when her husband, Virgil, died suddenly. She, with her son, Steve, took on the responsibilities of managing the family farm.

She enjoyed traveling, reading, sewing, playing games, following current events and was always interested in learning something new. As recently as several months ago, she was stitching quilts to send to people in need. Family get-togethers were her biggest delight, especially watching “the little boys,” her great grandsons, Larson and Brynjar Huss, play.

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Members of the DeKalb County Board’s Economic Development Committee are expected to continue to lay the groundwork for a new business incubator during their monthly meeting Tuesday.

Work began earlier this year on establishing a hub where some local entrepreneurs could rent space in the county’s Community Outreach Building on North Annie Glidden Road.

Over the past few months, the committee has worked on rules for the space – including rent costs, who could participate and what amenities would be included – and made some decisions on how it would be run.

At the committee’s April 5 meeting, Mary Supple, the county board coordinator, was selected to be the economic development coordinator. She is expected to be part of the

Also on the committee’s agenda for that night, the DeKalb County Area Arts Council is expected to give its report.

Sycamore attorney heads to trial on felony theft charge

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A local attorney is looking to not only to defend himself as he prepares for trial on a felony theft charge, but also inflict some damage.

Kevin O. “K.O.” Johnson, 50, of the 1600 block of Maness Court, Sycamore, plans to call more than a dozen other local attorneys, including DeKalb County State’s Attorney Kevin O. Richard Schmack, as Johnson witnesses and produce a color exhibit of a former employee’s breasts at trial, court records show. The former employee is the victim in the theft case.

“I want to cost Richard Schmack the election,” Johnson said. “He has abused his power – he doesn’t deserve to hold office.”

Theft charges against Johnson were filed in 2013 and upgraded to felony status in 2014, court records show. Felony theft typically is punishable with probation or up to five years in prison.

He is accused of withholding money from a former employee’s paycheck but failing to invest it in her retirement

fund in 2012, court records show. In court documents filed Monday, Johnson included a photograph of his former employee’s breasts, and noted that the “trial version [is] expected to be in color.”

The Illinois Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission suspended Johnson’s law license for 18 months in 2014. The suspension ended in August 2015. Johnson faced ethical sanctions for billing two divorce clients for attorney fees knowing part of the fees had been discharged through the clients’ bankruptcy proceedings and he could not collect them, according to the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission.

The ethics complaint also accused Johnson of interfering with his own bankruptcy proceedings by asking his clients to ignore communication from the bankruptcy trustee. He also improperly asked clients to send him payments directly when those payments were part of the bankruptcy estate and should have been sent to the bankruptcy trustee, the complaint stated.

Johnson has claimed the case against him is politically motivated because he supported Clay Campbell in his failed 2012 re-election campaign.

me a subpoena,” Buck said.

Assistant State’s Attorney James Walsh, who is prosecuting the case and also has been called to testify on Johnson’s behalf, said he intends to call three witnesses and prove Johnson took money from his former employee without authorization and intended to permanently deprive her of that money.

Asked about the photo of the former employee included in the court filing, Walsh said, “In my experience, it is very uncommon.”

The case is set for trial May 10. A status hearing has been set for Thursday.

In 2014, Schmack denied Johnson’s assertion that his actions had been politically motivated.

“I tried playing nice,” Johnson said.

“I’ve been destroyed. I used to have a thriving practice. This has destroyed my ability to survive in the state of Illinois. It’s politically scary to be nice to me.”

Earlier this year, Hotopp withdrew as Johnson’s attorney at Johnson’s request. At that point, Johnson filed notice he would represent himself.

“It’s messy,” he said. “No one else can do what has to be done. This is as politically ugly as you can get.”

Johnson claims the dispute with his former employee should be characterized as a breach of contractual relationship rather than a criminal offense. He also claims the amount of money involved is less than the state claims and doesn’t warrant a felony charge.

“I made a mistake,” Johnson said.

“There was never a theft.”

To help his defense at trial, Johnson sent subpoenas to 28 people. Many of them are attorneys who Johnson said will support his claims that Schmack filed the felony charge and ARDC complaint as an act of political retribution.

Several former prosecutors were given subpoenas, along with a DeKalb police officer and three of Johnson’s former lawyers, Ciji Calhoun, Campbell and William Hotopp.

Sycamore attorney Jack Slingerland and DeKalb attorney Robert Carlson were among those subpoenaed to testify about Schmack’s political motivation. Neither attorney returned calls Friday.

James R. Buck, a local attorney who received a subpoena regarding the ARDC complaint filed against Johnson, said he wasn’t sure why Johnson wanted him to testify at the trial.

City announces plans to build Navy Pier hotel by 2018

CHICAGO – The city of Chicago said construction will begin next year on the first hotel at the popular tourist attraction, Navy Pier.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office released details about the planned hotel Sunday.

A mayor’s office statement said the project will be developed and operated by a national hotel management company, First Hospitality Group Inc. The building’s projected to cost around $90 million. It’s slated

to open in 2018.

A statement from the mayor’s office said the hotel is part of a redevelopment plan for the 100-year-old site. Emanuel said the hotel is one part of an overall goal to entice 55 million visitors a year to Chicago by 2020.

The hotel will be on the east end of Navy Pier and will have more than 200 guest rooms.

Races back on at Arlington Park after legal dispute settled

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Opening day at Arlington International Racecourse is back on following an agreement to resolve a lawsuit that threatened the summer horse racing season at the track.

An agreement was announced Friday between a facility formerly known as Arlington Park

and the Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association.

The association had sued the track, the Illinois Racing Board and the Illinois Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Foundation in federal court April 18 over what it alleged were plans to replace the association with a different breeders group.

The suit led track officials to lock the gates at the track.

However, the summer racing season now is scheduled to start Friday as planned.

Illinois man crushed by garbage dies in landfill accident

ROCKFORD – The death of a 54-year-old man buried under the weight of a tipped-over garbage truck and its contents at a Rockford landfill is under investigation by a federal workplace safety agency.

The Dixon Telegraph reported that Gonzalo Trevino Sr. died Thursday at the Winnebago Landfill. Authorities said the garbage truck contained 80,000 pounds of concrete, steel, wood and other building debris.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident. The Winnebago County coroner said Trevino was killed by blunt force to the abdomen and chest.

New Milford Fire Chief Alan Carlson said Trevino was unloading a garbage truck when the load from a second truck shifted.

right to a jury trial in one of the cases, which was set to start this week.

The News-Gazette reported that 31-year-old Jerad Gale made the request Friday in a Piatt County case. He is charged with two counts of criminal sexual assault involving a 27-year-old woman with whom he lived in Monticello; that trial was scheduled to begin Monday.

Defense attorney Evan Bruno declined to discuss whether Gale and local prosecutors are discussing a plea deal in lieu of a trial.

The 2014 Champaign police officer of the year is also charged with criminal sexual assault and aggravated domestic battery against former girlfriends in two separate Champaign County cases.

For some, Chicago State flawed but final shot at degree

CHICAGO – Most of the more than 4,000 students at Chicago State University on the city’s south side are black, have low incomes and, like their school, face often uncertain paths toward better futures.

A $600 million stopgap spending measure for Illinois public universities that Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner signed last week helped put the campus on firmer financial ground, but even the $20 million for Chicago State wasn’t enough to keep the school from laying off more than 300 employees, about a third of its workforce.

Even with its uncertain future, Chicago State represents the best chance forward for many of its students, they and experts agree.

The list of the questions facing the school on Chicago’s South Side has grown since last summer, when the state stopped providing money to its nine public universities due to the budget stalemate. The school at one point talked about possible closure, declared a form of academic bankruptcy and sent layoff notices to all of its employees before it cut the 300 jobs Friday.

Before the budget mess, Chicago State already was considered the worst-performing of the state’s public universities.

Only 21 percent of its students earn

a degree within six years, according to the U.S. Department of Education. At Eastern Illinois University, that figure is 60 percent. And at the University of Illinois’ flagship campus, it is 84 percent.

State audits regularly have turned up financial mismanagement in recent years, and enrollment has declined.

Chicago State also is more reliant on the state than any of Illinois’ other public universities, getting about 30 percent of its funding through annual appropriations. That doesn’t include the financial aid that most of its students use to help pay tuition – money that also is held up by the state budget situation.

The student body doesn’t look like those found at the other state universities. Three-quarters of the students are black, and almost three-quarters are women. More than half are 25 or older; and many, if not most, have transferred from other schools after struggling elsewhere.

“I’ve seen lots of them come unprepared for college work,” said Robert Bionaz, an associate professor of history.

“These are bright people who, in many cases, have seen life intervene.”

Bionaz is among the many people on campus who roll their eyes about some of the campus’ low-slung, tan buildings, many based on geometric shapes that can yield odd floor plans.

But the campus tucked into a part of the city with chronically high levels of unemployment and crime represents a

chance, sometimes the last chance, for many students.

“Honestly, this is like people’s last resort, last choice,” said Denzel Tucker, a senior physics major who transferred to Chicago State from the Illinois Institute of Technology, where a year of tuition is more than $40,000. Chicago State charges $6,000 a year.

Although Bionaz is a regular critic of school administration, he said measures such as low graduation rates miss the point.

“I had a woman who had a full-time job in law office downtown. It took her 8½ years to graduate,” he said, citing a case he said illustrates the unusual nature of the school’s students.

And Chicago State does graduate students – as many as 1,000 a year in recent years, such as those in dark-green gowns who collected diplomas Thursday.

Alternatives, even within the city, are few and often unrealistic for students at the school, said University of Illinois associate professor of higher education Jennifer Delaney. She grew up on the South Side.

Private schools such as Roosevelt University in downtown Chicago are not far away, but Roosevelt’s $28,000 annual tuition means it isn’t an option for most.

And even the cheaper options in the city are less likely to work out simply because they are not on the South Side, where many of the students are from, she said.

U.S. once again forced to turn to Russia for help with Syria

The Associated Press GENEVA – Scrambling to resuscitate a nearly dead truce in Syria, the Obama administration has again been forced to turn to Russia for help, with little hope for the desired U.S. outcome.

At stake are thousands of lives and the fate of a feeble peace process essential to the fight against the Islamic State group, and Secretary of State John Kerry has appealed once more to his Russian counterpart for assistance in containing and reducing the violence, particularly around city of Aleppo.

“We are talking directly to the Russians, even now,” Kerry said on his arrival in Geneva as he began talks with Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh. “The hope is we can make some progress, but the UN Security Council Resolution calls for a full country, countrywide, cessation and also for all of the country to be accessible to humanitarian assistance.

Obviously that hasn’t happened and isn’t happening.”

“These are critical hours.

We look for Russia’s cooperation. We obviously look for the regime to listen to Russia and to respond to the international communities’ powerful statement to the UN Security Council.”

Kerry spoke at length Friday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to that end, and had been hoping to meet with Lavrov soon, according to U.S. officials.

In Geneva, Kerry met with Judeh and was to meet U.N. envoy Staffan de Mistura and Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir on Monday before returning to Washington.

But Lavrov was not expected to be in Geneva, complicating Kerry’s efforts to make the case directly to the Russians for more pressure on their Syrian government allies to stop or at least limit attacks in Aleppo.

The State Department said Kerry, in his meetings, would “review ongoing efforts to reaffirm the cessation of hostilities nationwide in Syria, obtain the full humanitarian access to which the Syrian government committed and

support a political transition.”

Specific, viable options to achieve those broad goals are limited, and Friday’s announcement of a new, partial cease-fire that does not include Aleppo underscored the difficulty Kerry faced.

U.S. and other officials described that initiative, brokered mainly by Russia and the United States as co-chairs of the International Syria Support Group, as a “reinforcement” of the February truce, now largely in tatters, that they hope to extend from Damascus and the capital’s suburbs and the coastal province of Latakia to other areas.

“This is an agreement within the task force, but certainly on the part of the U.S. and Russia that there would be a reinforcement of the cessation of hostilities in these specific areas as a start, with the expectation that this ... would be then extended elsewhere,” State Department spokesman Mark Toner said.

Syria’s military extended a unilateral cease-fire around the capital for another 24 hours on Sunday.

Malia Obama to take gap year before entering Harvard in 2017

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama’s daughter Malia will take a year off after graduating high school in June before enrolling at Harvard University in 2017, a year later than had been widely expected, the president and his wife said in a long-awaited announcement Sunday.

Harvard encourages admitted students to defer for one year to travel, pursue a special project or activity, work or spend time in another meaningful way. The student must not enroll in a program at another college that would grant the student a degree.

Malia, who turns 18 in July, is the elder of the Obamas’ two daughters.

She is a senior at the exclusive Sidwell Friends school in the District of Columbia, which claims another first daughter, Chelsea Clinton, among its alumni.

Malia is set to graduate high school in June. Her sister, Sasha, 14, is a freshman at Sidwell.

Obama has talked about dreading the day when Malia leaves for college.

Her decision to take a gap year could keep her closer to home as her fami-

ly prepares for the major transition coming next year: leaving the White House and returning to private life.

Obama plans to live in Washington for a few more years so Sasha can finish high school. The president and his wife, Michelle, still own a home in Chicago.

Gap years are more common in Europe and Australia than in the U.S., according to the Portland, Oregon-based American Gap Association. But a growing number of gap year programs suggest increasing popularity in the U.S. “It’s definitely gaining momentum,” said Ethan Knight, the association’s executive director, citing increased interest from high school students. “Students go to college more satisfied and engaged, and universities often see these students become leaders on campus.”

The first lady has said Malia wants to be a filmmaker. She has interned on the set of HBO’s “Girls” and on a now-canceled network TV sci-fi drama that starred Halle Berry. Malia has also had internships at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington.

Malia joined her father earlier this month on a three-day trip that started at the University of Chicago Law School, where he once taught constitutional law, to discuss his stalled nomination of Judge Merrick Garland to the U.S. Supreme Court. From Chicago, they flew to Los Angeles and San Francisco, where the president attended fundraisers and played golf.

“Both of my daughters are wonderful people. Malia’s more than ready to leave but I’m not ready for her to leave,” Obama told DeGeneres. “She’s

one of my best friends. It’s going to be hard for me not to have her around all the time, but she’s ready to go.

She’s just a really smart, capable person, and she’s ready to make her own way.”

Malia visited at least a dozen public and private colleges during her search, mostly on the East Coast, except for Stanford and the University of California, Berkeley. Six of the eight Ivy League schools were among them, including Harvard, where her parents earned law degrees.

The president is a 1983 graduate of Columbia University, and Mrs. Obama graduated from Princeton in 1985.

By choosing Harvard, Malia seems to have disregarded her parents’ advice. Harvard confirmed Malia’s acceptance.

“The one thing I’ve been telling my daughters is that I don’t want them to choose a name,” Mrs. Obama said in a recent interview with Seventeen magazine. “I don’t want them to think, ‘Oh I should go to these top schools.’ We live in a country where there are thousands of amazing universities. So, the question is: What’s going to work for you?”

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Jonathan Mossberg is among a small number of pioneers looking to build a safer gun.

But unlike many others, he was in the gun business when he started down that path.

His family is renowned for its premier line of shotguns treasured by law enforcement, hunters and the military.

Mossberg already has spent more than a decade working to develop – and someday bring to the market – a firearm the wrong person cannot fire. It is intended to work without fail in the hands of its owner in a life-or-death situation.

“We’re gun people, so we know when you pick up a gun you want to shoot it,” Mossberg said. “You don’t want to swipe your finger. You don’t want to talk to it. In an emergency situation, you want to pick it up and use it.”

Mossberg’s iGun Technology Corp., based in Daytona Beach, Florida, relies on a simple piece of jewelry – a ring – that “talks” to a circuit board embedded in a firearm to let it know the user is authorized. The ring must be within centimeters of the gun for the gun to fire.

The road to a safer gun has been long. Initial efforts encountered a pub-

“The technologies are a reality now,” said Stephen Teret, a professor of health policy and management at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health who studies gun violence and gun policies. “There are obstacles still in getting those technologies into guns and getting guns into the civilian marketplace.”

Among them is cost. Modernizing gun manufacturing would mean higher prices for smart weapons.

Then there’s politics. The industry is concerned that success with the technology would encourage the government to mandate it.

And the powerful gun lobby raises red flags about reliability. What happens if the firearm isn’t syncing with the radio signal or the fingerprint isn’t recognized? In a crisis, seconds are precious.

“If you need it to protect yourself and it doesn’t work, that’s a bad outcome,” said Larry Keane, senior vice president and general counsel for the National Shooting Sports Foundation, which represents manufacturers. “Reliability is everything ... If your iPhone doesn’t work, you’re inconvenienced. You’re not dead.”

Judge has sided with vote-suppressing law Last week, a federal district judge upheld one of the most regressive and restrictive voting laws in the country – a 2013 North Carolina law that eliminated same-day voter registration and preregistration for 16- and 17-yearolds; cut back on early voting by a week; barred counting votes cast outside voters’ home precincts; and required voters to show identification at the polls.

State lawmakers said these changes were necessary to reduce fraud and inefficiency in elections – although there is no evidence of voter fraud to combat or inefficiency to cure. The Justice Department, the American Civil Liberties Union, the NAACP and the Advancement Project, among others, sued on the grounds that the law illegally discriminates against minority voters.

Judge Thomas Schroeder, a George W. Bush appointee, accepted the state’s baseless rationales for the law, even as he dismissed or ignored the obvious political realities behind its passage. The law was a Republican-led rollback of several measures passed during the previous 15 years to make voting easier, and it was drafted with the purpose of driving down the vote among minorities, the poor, students and other groups that tend to vote Democratic.

It was pushed forward by the Legislature a day after the disgraceful Supreme Court ruling that struck down the heart of the Voting Rights Act, freeing North Carolina and other states with histories of voting discrimination from federal oversight. Had that provision been left in place, the North Carolina law very likely would have been blocked.

None of this seemed to matter to Judge Schroeder, who acknowledged that some black North Carolinians “endure socioeconomic disparities that can be linked to State discrimination,” which make it harder for them to participate in elections. Yet he concluded that voting discrimination is no longer a problem in North Carolina and that the new law does not exacerbate existing disparities.

Any meaningful analysis of the law should consider the impact of the restrictions on the specific communities and voters involved. For example, the elimination of same-day registration disproportionately affected black North Carolinians, who used that method at twice the rate of whites. That’s the type of analysis a three-judge panel of the federal Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit looked to when it blocked the ban on same-day registration and out-of-precinct voting.

Republicans have admitted that they do better when fewer people vote, and that voter-identification laws and other restrictions are intended to deter Democratic-leaning voters from getting to the polls.

That’s the reality, and Judge Schroeder was wrong to disregard it. His decision will be appealed to the Fourth Circuit, which should waste no time in knocking down this latest obstacle so that all North Carolinians can exercise their voting rights in November.

Recognizing that, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat, used his executive power earlier this month to sweep away his state’s laws limiting the franchise for felons.

With that action, about 200,000 convicted felons who have completed their prison time and finished parole or probation are now eligible to vote.

McAuliffe noted that Virginia’s law – one of the nation’s harshest and embedded in a Civil War-era state constitution – didn’t hobble the voting rights of black citizens through mere coincidence. That was its purpose. McAuliffe’s staff came across a 1906 report in which a thenstate senator gloated about several voting restrictions, including a poll tax and literacy tests, that, he said, would “eliminate the darkey as a political factor in this state in less than five years,” according to The New York Times.

You’d think that McAuliffe’s

fellow Virginia politicians, Republicans and Democrats alike, would celebrate his decision. Eliminating barriers to the franchise – especially those with obviously racist roots – can only polish the state’s image and strengthen the civic fabric.

But GOP leaders have objected, accusing McAuliffe of “political opportunism” and a “transparent effort to win votes.” Well, OK. Let’s stipulate that politicians are usually in the business of trying to win votes.

Having conceded that, though, isn’t restoring the voting rights of men and women who have served their time a good idea?

If a crime renders a man beyond the boundaries of civilized society, he should be imprisoned for the rest of his life. Otherwise, his crime shouldn’t place him in an inferior caste, without the privileges of full citizenship.

Curiously, though, many conservatives seem to disagree.

After Democrat Steve Beshear, then Kentucky’s governor, issued an executive order last year similar to McAuliffe’s, his Republican successor, Matt Bevin, overturned it.

Bevin signed a law allowing felons to petition judges to vacate their convictions – a bureaucratic hurdle not easily overcome.

Hogan, vetoed a bill to restore voting rights to felons, but the Democratically controlled legislature overrode him.

Those Republican governors are simply following the party’s script, which has focused for the last several years on ways to block the ballot, starting with harsh voter ID laws.

While advocates of such laws claim they are meant to protect against voting fraud, the sort of in-person fraud they would prevent hardly exists.

The real motivation for GOP lawmakers is to restrict the franchise from people unlikely to vote for them – especially people of color and millennials. Rather than campaign on a platform that attracts support, they rely on barriers to voting.

That’s wrong. The strength of American democracy depends on persuading more citizens that their votes count; carelessly – or intentionally – disenfranchising those with whom you disagree rends the civic fabric, distorts the political process and stokes the flames of discontent.

We surely don’t need more of that in this political season.

Tax dollars need to be used to repair infrastructures

Co–Chairs, Transportation for Illinois Coalition Asking Illinois taxpayers to pay more to support investments in the roads and bridges they travel on every day is a real challenge, as evidenced by the recent attention given to proposals to increase the state gas tax and to ask drivers to pay for the miles they travel.

The state’s ongoing budget stalemate is doing nothing to ease taxpayer frustration.

But there is a movement in Springfield we think can start to change the conversation over transportation investment. It starts with making sure the dollars intended to fix our infrastructure actually get spent on those projects.

For far too long in Illinois, that has not been the case. From 2003 to 2015, a whopping $6.4 billion in tax

dollars collected for transportation infrastructure were diverted for other purposes.

That averages out to more than $500 million each year in dollars paid at the gas pump or through other fees that drivers paid, only to have them sent to fill other holes in the state budget instead of keeping our road and bridge conditions improved.

Ask taxpayers whether they’re ready to pay more for our infrastructure, or the lawmakers who represent them to vote for paying more for improvements, and they’re likely to say they want to make sure the money being sent to infrastructure gets spent properly first. As co-chairs of the Transportation for Illinois Coalition, we wholeheartedly agree.

We applaud the Illinois House for recently overwhelmingly approving HJRCA 36, an initiative led by Rep.

Brandon Phelps and Sen. Bill Haine and championed by dozens of Democrats and Republicans alike.

The measure would guarantee the money raised for road and other transportation purposes can only be used that way, creating a lockbox for these important infrastructure funds.

The next step is for the Illinois Senate to take up this measure. If it is approved by next week, the measure will go to the November ballot – and voters will be able to decide if this strong protection for infrastructure investment is added to the state Constitution.

We have pushed for many years to make our infrastructure a top priority in Springfield and Washington. Illinois is the nation’s transportation hub, carrying millions of people to and from work and freight and goods from around the world to their destinations to support our

economy. Yet we are facing a crisis in our transportation network’s condition that, without an influx of new dollars soon, will result in thousands more miles of roads and many more bridges in unacceptable condition.

We need to get serious about what it will take to fix our infrastructure challenges for the long term, and those will not be easy discussions.

In the meantime, we can take a good first step by getting HJRCA 36 approved in the Senate and putting it on the fall ballot to ask voters the key question: Why can’t Illinois guarantee every dollar of road and bridge funding goes to fixing our roads and bridges?

Of all the consequences of the nation’s decades-long infatuation with building more and more prisons and locking up more and more citizens, perhaps the most curious is this: More than 4 million Americans who have been released from prison have lost their right to vote, according to the nonprofit Sentencing Project.

Even after men and women have served their time – after they have paid their debt to society, as the cliche goes – most states restrict their franchise.

It’s an odd idea: Those men and women are harmless enough to release onto the streets, but they can’t be trusted to vote. They have finished serving their sentences, but they are barred from full citizenship.

A disproportionate number of those second-class citizens are black. Because black Americans, particularly men, are locked up at a higher rate than their white peers, this peculiar practice falls heavily on them. Nationwide, one in every 13 black adults cannot vote as the result of a felony conviction, as opposed to one in 56 non-black voters, according to the Sentencing Project, which advocates for alternatives to mass incarceration.

Public star party at Afton Forest Preserve Sycamore mayor to discuss early council minutes at brown bag DAILY CHRONICLE

DAILY CHRONICLE There are many amazing stories in Sycamore’s history connected to famous people and important events.

However, sometimes ordinary daily life can be equally entertaining and significant.

Mayor Ken Mundy has spent many hours reviewing Sycamore’s city council minutes. Starting in 2008, in preparation for the city’s sesquicentennial, he began studying the historic ledgers containing the minutes.

Quickly, this project grew. Mundy has reviewed the city council minutes from 1858 to 1989.

Mundy will share some of his favorite stories based on his research during the years 1920 to 1940 at the Sycamore History Museum’s brown bag lunch at noon Thursday.

“We are very excited to have the mayor share his research as part of a brown bag lunch,” Michelle Donahoe, museum executive director, said in a news release. “His years of work making these important records connected to Sycamore’s history easily available for researchers is one of the reasons he was selected as one of the almost 50 people in the exhibit Faces of Sycamore.”

The brown bag lunches take place on the first Thursday of the month.

This month will be the start of the programs that return to the Sycamore History Museum, 1730 N. Main St. The event is free and open to the public; donations are welcome. Bring a lunch and SHM provides coffee and cookies.

The Northwest Suburban Astronomers, in cooperation with the DeKalb County Forest Preserve District, will host a public star party on Saturday, May 7, at the Afton Forest Preserve (north entrance) in DeKalb County.

Look at stars, galaxies, nebulae and star clusters with the help of NSA member telescopes. Observing highlights may include Jupiter, nebula M97 (Owl Nebula), galaxy M51 (Whirlpool Galaxy) and globular cluster M13 (Hercules Cluster) among others.

Dress for a chilly evening and bring a flashlight covered with red plastic or cellophane (red light preserves everyone’s night vision) as

“The spring beauties are carpeting the forest floor, the trillium are just getting ready to open as well as the Virginia bluebells,” Peggy Doty, University of Illinois educator, said in a news release. “By Mother’s Day weekend the forest will be putting on quite a display.”

All are welcome on the guided hikes. There will be two local botanists available to guide people out onto the trails to see what is blooming and talk about each one.

The trails are accessible for all abilities. There will be light refreshments and staff in the center to talk about birds at the feeders and the displays.

Fate hasn’t been kind to Dre Brown the past two spring football seasons.

The former DeKalb star running back and current Illinois redshirt freshman had surgery for a torn ACL for a second year in a row – announcing on Twitter he had surgery Wednesday. Brown said he tore his left ACL during practice April 18, ending his football season before it began once again. Last year, almost a year to the date, he tore his right ACL during practice.

There is good news for Brown in all of this, and of course, there is bad news.

On the bright side, according Robert G. Marx, an orthopedic surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, it’s easier to come back from tearing each ACL once – as opposed to if Brown had torn his right ACL for the second time.

The bad news?

After losing back-to-back seasons with knee injuries, it’s awfully hard not to see the large rubber stamp bearing down on him, labeling the former Barbs star one of the worst things an athlete can be called: “injury prone.”

When Brown – who also dislocated his shoulder late in his senior season at DeKalb – announced his injury April 19, even he mentioned he wasn’t sure if a long football career still was in the cards.

“Don’t know what God has planned for me next,” he said in his message. “If Football may be for me in the future or not. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers,” read the Twitter message. “This will be a long process with a lot (of) question marks and hopefully I find some answers (along) the way.”

Illinois first-year coach Lovie Smith briefly mentioned Brown’s situation after a practice April 22.

“When you have an injury like that, it’s nothing to celebrate,” Smith said of Brown, who came to Illinois as a three-star recruit and was reported to possibly be Illinois’ backup running back this season. “He’s come back from an injury before, he’ll come back from this one.”

It’s always been an interesting question to ponder: are some players truly more prone to injury? Or are they simply the victims of unfortunate fate?

Brown suffered a torn ACL in back-to-back seasons while playing football at the University of Illinois. book “The ACL Solution,” the concept of being injury prone is a real thing.

It stems from how an athlete plays the game, as well as other innate factors such as their balance, body alignment and physical makeup.

Bulls point guard Derrick Rose knows how a series of unforunate events can saddle a player with the dreaded injury-prone label.

Rose’s injury report rivals a grocery list, and many of the injuries are leg related, likely because of how much he cuts when he is in the lane.

But even when he suffered an orbital fracture after being elbowed in the face during practice in late September 2015, fans groaned.

Of course Rose got hurt. He always gets hurt.

Even though it was an injury in which Rose was a victim of circumstance, it felt like fate.

Former star Northern Illinois receiver Tommylee Lewis was having an All-American season his junior year

in 2013 before injuries diminished the rest of his collegiate career. He injured his big toe – which essentially kept him out until the 2014 season. He injured his ankle on the first drive of the 2015 season and later hurt his knee in a game at Toledo. He missed four games in 2015, his last season at NIU, with only 34 catches for 398 yards.

What makes Lewis’ situation so unfortunate is each injury was to a different body part – toe, ankle, knee.

Earlier this spring, NIU coach Rod Carey was talking about oft-injured running back Keith Harris Jr. – who was limited to two games in both the 2014 and 2015 seasons – and said that sometimes things like that just happen.

“You see those guys and their careers and what do you attribute that to?” Carey asked. “Bad luck? Injury prone? I don’t believe in any of it. I think it’s just circumstance that happens for a kid. Unfortunately, he’s had some bad circumstances a few times

in a row.”

It felt like one of those moments of an old-school football school being at odds with the medical community.

If Brown can somehow slowly return back to better than brand new, it could be good news for the Illini – and fans of the DeKalb football team.

In his final three seasons with the Barbs, he rushed for 3,790 yards and 46 touchdowns – leading DeKalb in 2014 to its first conference championship since 1989 – and was named the Daily Chronicle Football Offensive Player of the Year in 2014.

The ambitious Brown decided to graduate early from DeKalb and make it to Illinois early for the spring season. He was “rewarded” for his ambition by blowing out his knee days before the spring game.

Fate can be a real jerk sometimes.

Grant looking to throw himself into state

YCAMORE – Sycamore thrower Ryan Grant was inches away from qualifying for the Class 2A track and field state championships in the discus as a junior last season.

Now he’s already thrown the state qualifying mark as he looks to close out his career with the Spartans the way his sister, Sarah, did in 2014 – placing in the top five at the state meet.

“I hope it made him angry. I hope it made him hungry,” Sycamore coach Pete Piccony said of last year’s sectional meet. “I hope last year was a lesson and he has that reminder that he was that close and he only has one chance let.”

For Grant, coming up just short as a junior has helped him this season.

“That was kind of a heartbreak for me,” Grant said. “This year, I wasn’t throwing very well and then

I regained my focus and have started to throw better. I just want to do my thing.”

At the Sterling Sectional in 2015, he finished in third place in the discus with a distance of 140 feet, 8 inches.

However, only the top two finishers went to the state meet – with Victor Roman (Belvidere) narrowly edging him out with a mark of 141-0.

Grant said the state qualifying mark in the discus is 145-11 and this season he’s already met that. At the Gig Seegers Classic on Friday, he came in with a seed mark of 152-5 and finished in second place with a throw of 149.

“I’m fine not throwing my best right now, because it’s May when you want to be throwing your best,” said Grant, who also took fifth in the shot put.

Grant comes from a family of throwers, too. Sarah Grant was a standout at Sycamore and finished fifth in the discus at the Class 2A State

championships in 2014, throwing a 118-01. His mother, Lori, was a walk-on thrower at Ohio State.

“He’s got the pedigree,” Piccony said. “He’s got a lot of coaches. He’s got a lot of people that want him to get better, so that’s helpful. A lot of pointers, a lot of ideas.”

While Grant said some things have changed since Lori’s throwing days in college, he smiled that he’s benefited from her experience.

“She has helped, I can’t lie,” he laughed.

Ryan Grant also said as a sophomore at Sycamore, he drew inspiration from another source – this one outside of the family.

After the meet Friday, he talked about watching Kaneland’s Nate Dyer, who won the state championship in the shot put in 2014 despite not being the tallest or biggest thrower in the field.

“He was like 5-foot-5 and won state in the shot put and was all-state in the

discus, too,” Grant said. “Really, it’s just completely form. There’s been big guys, big strong guys from the school and they come out and throw the shot put 20 feet and leave saying, ‘I didn’t know it was so hard just to throw a ball.’ There’s a lot of technique.”

While two of the throwers at the Gig Seeger Classic on Friday – Marquis Cox and Grant Powell, both from Peoria – towered over Grant and the other throwers, the Sycamore senior finished ahead of both of them.

Now Sycamore is less than two weeks away from the Northern Illinois Big 12 Championship – May 13 – and three from the sectional meet May 20.

The weather hasn’t been ideal during meets this season, Piccony said, but expects big things from Grant coming down the home stretch.

“We really haven’t had good weather for people to PR this season,” Piccony said. “It’s been cold, rainy, cold, rainy. Now hopefully he can consistently improve those throws.”

Bears know what type of players they want

ajahns@suntimes.com Bears general manager Ryan Pace said coach John Fox would stop in his office last season and make a demand.

Fox would say, “Hey, I want throwback players,” Pace said, smiling.

It was a description Pace used to encapsulate inside linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski, a productive player from West Virginia who was one of three fourthround selections made by the Bears during Day 3 of the draft Saturday.

But it also was a reflection of the overhaul of the Bears’ roster, particularly on defense, where three new starters were added in free agency and where six of their nine draft picks from this year play.

The Bears keep adding players that fit their new brand under Pace and Fox. After a season together, Pace’s personnel department understands Fox’s coaching staff’s preferences much better, and vice versa.

“The common trait with all these guys I would say is toughness and instincts,” Pace said at Halas Hall after the draft concluded. “[It’s] something we’ve emphasized and something we’ve drafted [Saturday] for sure.”

Fox, for one, will never underestimate toughness as a personal attribute.

He downright demands it.

“So much of this game is dependability,” Fox said. “If they’re in the training room or not at practice … we have a sign in our locker room: Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

“Well, if you’re not out there, it’s hard to prepare real well. That dependability – and that’s kind of playing through ‘owies,’ as I call them – I think

Pace emphasized the Bears maintained a best-player-available approach throughout the draft. It’s why he passed on a young quarterback to groom behind starter Jay Cutler and why he didn’t select a tight end, even though the position was a major need. “[Defensive coordinator] Vic [Fangio] and [offensive coordinator] Dowell [Loggains] have been lobbying in my office over the last two weeks and dragging each other out of there,” Pace said. “It’s just the way it worked out, man. We were taking best player available, and it just happened to be on the defensive side of the ball. We’re fired up about it.”

But it’s also a best-player-available

approach that fits Fox’s and Fangio’s player preferences better.

The Bears’ defense, a surprisingly capable group in 2015, will look significantly different in 2016. The Bears made upgrades in free agency by signing inside linebackers Danny Trevathan and Jerrell Freeman and defensive end Akiem Hicks.

Then they filled needs in the draft.

Fox and Fangio got the speed rusher they desperately wanted in outside linebacker Leonard Floyd, the Bears’ first-round pick who will complement power rushers Pernell McPhee and Lamarr Houston.

Third-round pick Jonathan Bullard – he “has the juice to get up the field,” Fox said – could be Day 1 starter at one end in the Bears’ base 3-4 defense if he beats out Ego Ferguson and Mitch Unrein.

Safeties Deon Bush and DeAndre Houston-Carson, two Day 3 selections, are hard-hitting, willing tacklers – qualities that Fangio and secondary coach Ed Donatell valued for their top-rated 49ers defenses.

Fourth-round selection Deiondre’ Hall’s freakish arm length and long reach is a natural advantage that can improve the Bears’ secondary, which struggled to force turnovers last year, whether he’s at cornerback, nickel back or safety.

It all looks good on paper. Fangio definitely has plenty to work with, but every team likes its draft class.

Still, there seems to be a plan in place with Pace and Fox. “Again, all these guys have to be developed,” Fox said. “It’s a level jump.

They understand that. We have our work shoes on to make that happen.”

The Huskies play a doubleheader Wednesday at Valparaiso.

Coming into the final round in first place, NIU golfer Joo-Young Lee finished tied for second place Saturday at the MAC Championships.

Eaton thriving after ‘eventful’ spring

BALTIMORE – Does “eventful” aptly describe Adam Eaton’s spring?

Let’s see, there was recovery from shoulder surgery, an ill-advised twitter post, a misinterpreted comment about 14-year-old Drake LaRoche being a team leader and, on top of all that, a position change.

“It was a sloppy spring, for sure,” Eaton said.

To Eaton’s credit, he put his head down and sorted things out, trying to figure out where Adam Eaton he might have gone wrong. He embraced the move from center field to right, giving way to a more experienced Austin Jackson. He talked to veteran catcher Alex Avila about dealing with the media. And as the White Sox’s head-turning April passed with a club-tying record 17 wins and into May with a 7-1 victory Sunday over the Baltimore Orioles, Eaton was one of the biggest reasons with a steady bat at the top of the lineup and defense in right field like nobody else in baseball is playing.

“You grow from those moments and learn from them and try to get better from mistakes you make,” Eaton

Eaton’s defense in right, coupled with Jackson’s in center, are only two reasons why Sox (18-8) baseball is easier on the eyes in 2016. After playing center his first two seasons with the Sox (and being a Gold Glove finalist in his first), Eaton is running down fly balls all over right, keeping singles to singles on balls that would have been doubles with Avisail Garcia in right and throwing runners out with a strong, accurate, fully healed left arm.

Eaton has six outfield assists, the most in baseball, and went into Sunday’s game with 13 defensive runs saved, the most by any player at any position in either league. Stephen Piscotty was second with seven.

“He looks great over there,” Sox outfielders coach Daryl Boston said. “He gets great jumps off the bat, he’s going back on balls better than it seemed like he did in center. He’s made a smooth transition over there, that’s for sure.”

Eaton seems to track the ball better off the bat in right and might have a better personality or mindset for the corner.

“Not everybody has the mentality or makeup to want to be the main guy in center,” Boston said. “It seems like he relishes the role of the guy who’s more under the radar. He plays hard,

he’s [all] out. But I think he’d rather be in the background just doing his thing.”

Said Jackson: “What he’s been able to do is pretty amazing. And I don’t think anyone is questioning that arm anymore.”

Eaton also seems to be settling into a better comfort zone in the clubhouse, and in that regard, Avila has been helpful.

“We talked about the aspect of not alienating himself on stuff that he says,” Avila said. “We talked about the whole twitter thing, how to handle being something that the media is going to on a daily basis. That’s part of my job as a catcher. Trying to help him learn how to give [media] something so they can do their job, but at the same time being respectful in whatever the situation or topic might be.”

Eaton could have dug his heels in when he was moved from center, but to his credit, he did what was best for the team and can’t say enough about Jackson’s assistance.

“When someone takes your job and moves you, it takes special people on both sides – the guy having the job taken away from and the guy coming in,” Eaton said. “He came in very helpful, to help me over there, the communication, how are we going to do this.

“He has my back and I have his.”

CHICAGO – Colorful “off color” suits, mandated by manager Joe Maddon for the road trip to Pittsburgh, had most of the Cubs smiling Sunday, even after a sad ending to their four-game winning streak.

Red-white-and-blue sport coats for some, or camouflage ensembles for others (all by individual choice) are part of the manager’s “keep it fun” approach to a long season.

It never takes away from the serious part of the game, nor how his team continues to keep opponents on edge even if they have a lead.

The Atlanta Braves earned the 4-3

victory in 10 innings – but it took that long because their 3-0 lead vanished in the eighth and ninth innings.

“We go into every game with a good feeling,” said Matt Sczcur, who scored the first Cubs run with a pinch-hit bunt with one out in the eighth. “Our lineup is pretty stacked. Anyone can hit a homer, even in the wind. So the job is to get on base and put it together.”

The Cubs had only two hits off Braves starter Julio Teheran through seven. But that changed when Jim Johnson (two runs on two hits in onethird of an inning) and Arodys Vizcaino (one unearned run on two hits) replaced him.

Vizcaino was the unlikely winner, despite costing his team the tying run in the ninth with a wild pickoff throw to first that allowed Ben Zobrist (walk) to reach third.

Zobrist scored on Addison Russell’s two-strike single past a drawn in infield.

The irony was that Russell’s error fielding a hard-hit ground ball from

Adonis Garcia in the sixth led to one of the two runs the Braves scored in the frame.

“It was hard hit, but no excuses,” Russell said. “I should make that play.

Luckily, we got a double play after that.

When you have guys who keep battling, that picked me up. That’s a cool thing to see.”

Starter John Lackey was a different pitcher than the one who gave up six runs in 52/3 innings his most recent start.

He didn’t allow a hit until the fifth, when a leadoff double by Kelly Johnson turned into the first run. Lackey gave up only two more hits through eight innings, a season high for him and his longest outing since August in a game against Miami.

He struck out only two, his fewest since a game May 23, 2015, against Kansas City, but in the raw Wrigley Field conditions, “I was definitely pitching to contact,” he said. “Go ahead and try to hit it.

“With a young team like that that

likes to swing, you don’t get to many two-strike counts,” he said.

The Braves scored the winning run in the 10th off Hector Rondon (0-1). Jason Grilli (second save) held off the Cubs in the 10th.

“But we did a lot of things well,” Maddon said. “We did one wrong thing (Russell’s error), but that’s a tough ball for Addie. We hit some balls without luck, but I like how we fought back.

And give [the Braves] credit for coming back, too.”

The loss meant May starts differently than the winning month of April.

“I’d love to keep doing that every month,” Maddon said of the historic April of 17 victories. “To sustain all those components would be great.

The offense has been based on good atbats, but you haven’t seen us knocking the cover off the ball yet,” he added of things to come.

“I’ve always said we have to win `today,’ ” Szczur said. “If we can make that happen, we’ll be in good shape.”

If I had to bet on what causes BMS, it would be this: subtle damage of the main nerve that detects pain in the mouth, the trigeminal nerve. Indeed, one study provides support for that theory.

Low doses of tricyclic drugs, certain medicines often used for seizures and some pain-killing medicines and creams applied directly to the parts of your mouth that hurt all may help.

There are steps you can take to reduce your mouth discomfort. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research recommends the following to keep symptoms at bay: • Sip water frequently.

• Suck on ice chips.

• Avoid irritating substances: hot, spicy foods; mouthwashes with alcohol; and acid foods such as citrus fruits and juices.

• Chew sugarless gum.

• Avoid alcohol and tobacco.

Dear Dr. K: For some time, I’ve had a burning and tingling in my mouth. My dentist and doctor seem to be mystified.

What could be causing my symptoms, and what can I do?

Dear Reader: Several things might be causing these bothersome symptoms. Some that come to mind are nutritional deficiencies – particularly of B vitamins, iron and zinc. These problems can be detected by simple blood tests.

Medicines that cause the mouth to become dry (due to decreased saliva production) can result in mouth irritation.

There are too many of these medicines to list here, but check a reliable website that provides information about the drugs you may be taking and their side effects.

Sometimes a person can develop an allergy to dentures and related adhesive creams, toothpastes or mouthwashes, which can cause irritation of the tissues of the mouth. In today’s deal, how should the defense prevail against three notrump after West leads the spade eight?

The auction was straightforward.

South’s one-no-trump response showed 6-9 (or a poor 10) points and no four-card major.

West carefully leads a top-ofnothing spade eight -- only lead fourth-highest with at least one honor in the suit. South wins the first trick and plays a diamond, hoping to take three spades, four diamonds and three clubs. But East should see how to defeat the contract.

Given that South has the spade ace and king, seven points, he cannot also hold the heart ace. So East should take the first diamond and shift to the heart three, the low card from length saying that he has honors in this suit and is trying to take tricks in it.

West will win with his ace and return the five, giving the defenders one diamond and four hearts.

Note that if East ducks his diamond ace for two rounds, hoping to get a signal from his partner on the third round, it is too late. Declarer will run for home with three spades, two diamonds and four clubs.
