When there are lots of fires to put out POLL There were a lot of fires to put out Wednesday afternoon, and not just the figurative ones that tend to crop up in the late afternoon in a newsroom.

First, a self-storage building on Lincoln Highway in Malta caught fire about 2:30 p.m.

DeKalb firefighters drove an engine out there to help get the flames under control. They were just wrapping up out there when a house fire was reported at 115 Elm St. on DeKalb’s east side.

Reporter Katie Smith followed the DeKalb fire engine east on Lincoln Highway from the Malta fire to the DeKalb fire.

Although we still think of them as people who fight fires, about 75 percent of calls local fire departments answer are for medical emergencies. It’s somewhat rare to have back-to-back building fires in a community, DeKalb Fire Chief Eric Hicks said.

But it happens, and firefighters are prepared, Hicks said.

They have a procedure called the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System, which makes the police scanner sound kind of like the mother ship from “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” It’s how they call up their colleagues from other departments.

When a building catches fire in DeKalb, it’s pretty common for Sycamore and Cortland fire departments to send an engine to help.

Of the 30 or so firefighters not on the clock, from 10 to 15 will come in to help when the first call goes out and staff the city’s three fire stations, Hicks said.

“We called them back in to run other calls in the city while the fire in DeKalb was going on,” Hicks said. “When we have a fire in our town, we commit all the city’s resources to that fire. We call in off-duty personnel, and then we staff the fire stations again for that next call.”

In a city the size of DeKalb, those calls invariably come. On Wednesday, one of them was for a rear-end collision that occurred as people slowed down near the fire scene and someone didn’t hit the brakes in time.

It was a wild afternoon, with a lot of property damage and a disrupted day off for several local firefighters. But, luckily, no one was seriously hurt.

State school board forecasts full funding for some in 2016-17

By RHONDA GILLESPIE rgillespie@shawmedia.com School districts throughout DeKalb County stand to collectively receive about $3.6 million more in general state aid starting next school year, if projections from the State Board of Education released this week come to fruition.

“This money from the state would be able to almost bring us to a balanced budget,” said Andrea Gorla, DeKalb School District 428 assistant superintendent for business and finance.

For the first time in years, the state is looking to fund some public school districts at 100 percent of the foundation, or base, level announced for schools.

State officials said the move would mark the first time in seven years that general state aid, which is used for salaries, educational materials and other expenses, would not be prorated.

With proration, schools receive only a percentage of the foundation amount.

The state board report indicates that schools in District 428, for example, could receive $20.2 million in general state aid for the 2016-17 school year if they are funded at 100 percent. That would be $2.4 million more than the $17.9 million the district received for the current school year.

If the $20.2 million were prorated at an anticipated 87.1 percent rate, the district would get only $17.6 million – less than what it received in state aid for the current school year.

Gorla explained that with the district wanting to expand its use of Chromebooks and more Web-based teaching, as well as bring in instructional coaches to help teachers execute the curriculum, the expense would be expected to create a deficit of more than $2 million in the district’s total $82.6 million budget.

Fully funded GSA would help close that gap, she said.

Sycamore School District 427 could receive almost $9.2 million in state aid, almost $1 million more than it received this school year. But Superintendent Kathy Countryman calls actually getting the full funding a big “if.”

“At this point in time, we can’t count on that,” she said. “We have been prorated for so long, it’s kind of put a pause in what we can expect.”

District 427 has had a couple of rounds of layoffs this year, including of teachers, and Countryman said the increase wouldn’t change that.

“We have to really just stay the course with our budget reduction plan,” she said.

The funding the state board announced is, so far, merely a forecast.

The final state aid distribution would depend on lawmakers passing appropriation legislation – something they did for this budget year, although they failed to pass an overall budget.

The state still has not passed bills to authorize spending for fiscal 2016 – which started July 1. Fiscal 2017 starts in less than three months.

The general state aid funding represents about two-thirds of the money school districts get from the state. The pool of money legislators appropriate is divided up by the state board and distributed to school districts based on a

formula that takes into account school enrollment, percentage of low-income students and property tax resources.

Hiawatha School District 424, which serves 580 students from Kirkland, Fairdale and the surrounding area, is the only local community expected to lose money. Interim Superintendent Wayne Riesen said an enrollment decline of about 60 students over the past three to four school years was a possible reason why the state would give the district $35,201 less for 2016-17.

“That’s fairly substantial,” said Riesen, who is serving as superintendent until June 30. “That’ll transfer directly into a loss of state funds.”

The state’s school funding plan would make good on what Gov. Bruce Rauner said in his Feb. 17 budget address, when he called for making changes to the way the state funds its public school districts.

“By fully funding education and ending proration, we’re putting more money into the classrooms to educate our young scholars,” State Superintendent of Education Tony Smith said.

SYCAMORE – Crews began grading work Thursday on the Sycamore Park District’s River Restoration Project.

The project’s key players gathered for a ceremonial tee-off on the 10th hole at the Sycamore Golf Club. Restoration to the river area nearby is intended to improve water quality, prevent flooding, and encourage smarter land-use decisions in the future, DeKalb County Community Foundation Program Director Anita Zurbrugg said.

As work progresses, the repairs will stretch over about five acres, extending south to the bridge that connects the golf course and sports complex and east along Route 64, Sycamore Park District Executive Director Dan Gibble has said.

The DeKalb County Community Foundation has been working with the DeKalb Highway Department to erect educational signs

along major roadways throughout the county to stress the importance of restoration work.

“Eventually, we’re hoping people start identifying where they live as a watershed, as well as their address or town,” Zurbrugg said.

Once the grading work is complete, workers will remove non-native plants and introduce wetland species to the area.

Present at the tee-off Wednesday were representatives from: the Sycamore Park District, DeKalb County Community Foundation, Union Ditch/Virgil Ditch and East Branch Kishwaukee River Watershed Planning Steering Committee, and DeKalb-based ecological consulting firm ENCAP Inc. The DeKalb County Community Foundation awarded the district a $42,800 CommunityWorks grant last fall to restore the waterways where Route 64 crosses the south branch of the Kishwaukee River.

House fire causes $100K damage, displaces DeKalb family

By KATIE SMITH ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A house fire Wednesday caused $100,000 in damage and temporarily displaced a DeKalb family, DeKalb fire officials said.

Shortly after authorities controlled a structure fire Wednesday in Malta, they were called to a DeKalb home that suffered significant damage to the first floor. No one was home at the time of the fire, which started for unknown reasons, according to a news release from the DeKalb Fire Department.

Firefighters were called at 3:38 p.m. to a two-story house at 115 Elm St. on the city’s east side, where heavy smoke was seen billowing from the attached garage. The fire started in the home’s kitchen, according to the news release.

Respondents from Cortland and Sycamore fire departments assisted DeKalb, and the fire was under control within 15 minutes of receiving the call, fire officials said. Ambulances were called for a vehicle crash at the intersection of Elm Street and Lincoln Highway, just across the road from the fire while firefighters were on the scene.

No one was injured.

Firefighters and fire crews remained on the scene until about 7 p.m. The Red Cross provided the family who lived in the house with a temporary place to stay.

Ridulph requesting judge continue McCullough case

By KATIE SMITH ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The brother of Maria Ridulph has asked a judge to wait for his attorney to appear before he rules on any motions by the man convicted of Maria’s murder.

A hearing on Jack D. McCullough’s request to be released from prison and have his murder conviction set aside is scheduled for Friday in DeKalb County Court. DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack has said in court filings that he agrees McCullough is innocent and has asked that he be released and charges against him be dismissed.

Ridulph, who testified at McCullough’s 2012 trial, has asked DeKalb County Judge William Brady to appoint a special prosecutor to defend the guilty verdict. On April 1, Brady continued the case to Friday so that Ridulph could appear with an attorney.

In court papers filed Thursday afternoon, Ridulph said he was unable to retain an attorney until Wednesday, when he hired Chicago-based lawyer Bruce Brandwein to represent him.

McCullough’s attorneys filed their own amended motion Wednesday, requesting Brady deny Ridulph’s motion for a special prosecutor.

Neither Ridulph nor Brandwein were immediately available to comment.

Donald was a graduate of DeKalb High School Class of 1983. He was active with the Opportunity House in Sycamore; was employed by Pick-N-Save and formerly by Laidlaw Bus Company. Donald was an avid Cubs Fan and his family requests that if attending the service or visitation, you wear any Cub attire.

He is survived by his parents, Donald, Sr. and Beatrice Davis; his sisters, Penny (Terry) Rhodes of DeKalb, Davis Ehrler of Vista, California; brothers, Merle Davis of Liberty Lake, Washington, Chad (Jaime) Davis of DeKalb; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles; and his special friends, Soren and Mary Rasmussen.

DeKALB – Rosati’s Pizza plans to open a restaurant in DeKalb.

The DeKalb City Council approved a liquor license for the business this week.

Rosati’s plans to open in the space previously occupied by Rosy’s Roadhouse and Starbusters at 930 Pappas Drive, Unit A, in DeKalb.

Rosati’s Pizza of DeKalb plans to lease the space to open a pizzeria with TVs and table configuration similar to Buffalo Wild Wings, according to city documents.

The liquor license is conditional on owner Sandra Carlos completing all required build-out plans, getting a fire life-safety license, registering for payment of local taxes and obtaining final approval from the police and fire departments on signage, access measures and public safety-related issues, according to city documents.

It wasn’t clear when the restaurant would open.

In 2013, Brendan Fitzharris, Joe Chavez and Rosy Amodio took over Starbusters Bar & Grill and transformed it into Rosy’s Roadhouse. Rosy’s Roadhouse closed last year.

Rosati’s Pizza also has a location at 630 Plaza Drive, Unit 4, in Sycamore.

Spartan broadcasters gaining recognition gether a video clip of the Illinois High School Association’s leadership conference last fall, is starting to have its work recognized, Sycamore Principal Tim Carlson said.

“People are seeing their work out there and are requesting it,” Carlson said. “I think the long-term effect of all this is the opportunity kids are going to have when they leave here.”

SkillsUSA will pay all costs associated with the trip, including gas, food and hotel expenses.

Staff will also use the trip to evaluate if a SkillsUSA chapter could be formed at the high school to help prepare students for college and future careers. Somewhere down the road, the district would even like to incorporate Spartan TV as a class, Carlson said.

“I think it’s pretty cool now that our alumni and graduates can see what’s going on here at the high school,” he said. “It makes the whole world smaller, and I’m not sure if the kids know how impactful the work they do is.”

SYCAMORE – A group of Sycamore High School students has been asked to attend a state leadership conference next week in Springfield.

The school’s extracurricular broadcast news group, Spartan TV, was invited by SkillsUSA to shoot a promotional video for its Leadership and Skills Conference that runs from April 21 to 23. SkillsUSA, formerly the Vocation Industrial Clubs of America, pairs high school and college students with businesses in a field related to their studies.

The three-day trip will allow four of Spartan TV’s top contributors to practice their broadcasting skills and explore other career opportunities involving video production, Spartan TV adviser David Olson said.

“The four kids are super excited,” Olson said. “It’s a totally new experience for them. I think they’re excited more for the challenge.”

Chicago weighs cost of proposed police changes

CHICAGO – A day after a task force blasted the Chicago Police Department for decades of discrimination, law enforcement officials weighed which of the panel’s recommendations could be adopted and how much they might add to Chicago’s already heavy financial burdens.

The only thing that was clear about the group’s 190-page report was that it can’t be treated like critics say previous studies were – shoved into a desk drawer and forgotten.

“Either we act now and do the right thing or the Department of Justice is going to mandate that we turn and do the right thing,” Alderman Anthony Beale said, referring to a separate review of Chicago police practices being conducted by the federal government.

The task force created late last year

by Mayor Rahm Emanuel portrayed the Chicago department as a place where racist officers have been able to hide behind rules and procedures, and police brutality was easily kept secret.

Chicago officers have “no regard for the sanctity of life when it comes to people of color,” the panel’s report said.

The report issued Wednesday also offered a list of suggested reforms, including increasing the number of body cameras and posting complaints against officers and their discipline records online for everyone to see.

Unemployment up again in March, hits 6.5 percent

CHICAGO – Illinois’ unemployment rate edged up again in March as the state added jobs but not enough to keep pace with the number of people looking for work.

The state Department of Employment Security said Thursday that unemployment hit 6.5 percent in March. That was up from 6.4 percent in February and the fifth straight monthly increase.

Department director Jeff Mays pointed out that the increase in the unemployment rate comes in spite of the state adding 14,700 more jobs in March than it lost.

The national unemployment rate for March was 5 percent.

In Illinois, the leisure and hospitality industry sector added a net 6,300 jobs in March, and construction employment grew by 4,100 jobs.

Manufacturers cut a net 3,100 jobs, and professional and business services firms shrunk by 1,400 jobs.

Ex-Cook County officer gets 7½ years for drug thefts

Federal prosecutors said Wednesday that 45-year-old Robert Vaughan of Frankfort admitted in a plea agreement to robbing eight drug dealers from 2011 to 2013, earning $300,000.

Prosecutors said he stole cocaine, marijuana and contraband cigarettes. He pleaded guilty last year to one count of robbery.

Prosecutors said Vaughan would arrest suspects but keep the narcotics and release them without charges. They said Vaughan sold the narcotics in exchange for cash. Prosecutors said he also stole marijuana based on tips from informants.

Vaughan was arrested in November 2014 along with another officer after stealing 70 pounds of marijuana from someone they believed was a drug courier but actually was an undercover federal agent.

Beauty licenses expedited for pre-release prisoners

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois regulators are making it easier for prisoners on the verge of release to apply for state barber and cosmetology licenses while they remain behind bars.

The Illinois departments of corrections and financial and professional regulation announced a new measure this week allowing inmates who’ve completed coursework for those licenses to apply for state certification within six months of their expected release or parole.

Inmates will meet with the state licensing boards by video conference.

Officials said the move will reduce employment barriers for ex-offenders and is a response to a state Criminal Justice and Sentencing Commission recommendation.

Offenders were previously not allowed to start the application process until they were released.

USDA: Cooler temperatures delay Illinois planting

SPRINGFIELD – Federal officials said cooler temperatures sometimes dipping below freezing have prohibited Illinois agricultural producers from planting until they find warmer soil.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its weekly crop report for Illinois that fieldwork continues, and the spring calving season has begun.

The USDA’s crop report indicates the statewide average temperature was 41 degrees – six degrees below normal.

Precipitation averaged just more than half-an-inch, also less than normal.

Topsoil moisture was rated at 74 percent adequate. Subsoil was 82 percent adequate.

The amount of corn planted was at 2 percent, while the five-year average is 6 percent. Oats planted jumped to 32 percent, up 19 percentage points from last week.

Pasture and range conditions were rated at 56 percent good, 17 percent excellent.

Bitterly feuding, Clinton, Sanders clash in debate The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Deepening their increasingly bitter feud, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders aggressively challenged each other’s judgment to be president in Thursday night’s Democratic debate, sparring over Wall Street banks, how high to raise the minimum wage and gun control.

The showdown in Brooklyn came at a pivotal moment in the party’s primary campaign, with Clinton leading in the delegate count but Sanders generating huge enthusiasm for his surprising candidacy.

The Vermont senator took a biting and often sarcastic tone as he sought to chip away at Clinton’s credibility on issue after issue. He went as far as to suggest that her labeling of certain criminals as “superpredators” when she was first lady was “a racist term and everybody knew it was a racist term.”

Sanders also cited Clinton’s support for the unpopular Iraq war and for free trade agreements, as well as her willingness to accept money through a super PAC, as evidence that she lacks the needed judgment to lead the nation.

Still, he backed away from previous statements questioning Clinton’s qualifications, saying the former secretary of state does have the “experience and intelligence” to be president.

Clinton made little effort to hide her irritation with Sanders’ challenging of her qualifications, saying that while she has been “called a lot of things in my life, that was a first.” She repeatedly linked herself to President Barack Obama, who remains popular among Democrats, suggesting Sanders’ criticism of her

amounted to condemnation of the president.

Clinton cast Sanders as unprepared to implement even his signature policy proposals, including breaking up big banks. She also chided Sanders for chuckling during an exchange on gun control, an area where she has painted him as cozy with gun dealers and manufacturers.

“It’s not a laughing matter,” she said. “I take it really seriously because I have spent more time than I care to remember being with people who have lost their loved ones.”

The debate was the first for the Democratic candidates in five weeks. It came ahead of Tuesday’s primary in New York, a high-stakes contest with a huge cache of delegates at stake.

For Clinton, a win in a state that twice elected her senator would blunt Sanders’ recent momentum and put his pursuit of the nomination further out of reach. A Sanders upset over Clinton would shake up the race, raising fresh concerns about her candidacy and breathing new life into the Vermont senator’s campaign.

The Democratic primary has been fought for months on familiar terrain. Clinton has cast Sanders’ proposals for breaking up banks and offering free tuition at public colleges and universities as unrealistic. Sanders has accused Clinton of being part of a rigged economic and political system, hammering her repeatedly for giving paid speeches to Wall Street banks and refusing to release the transcripts.

Clinton continued to struggle to explain why she has not released the transcripts, saying only that she’ll do so when other candidates are required to do the same thing. She tried to raise questions about Sanders’ own openness for not releasing his income taxes.

Public needs true accounting of crises On Feb. 25, the day after a controversial Black History Month assembly at DeKalb High School led to a conflict among students, the Daily Chronicle reported that about 220 students stayed home from school.

To students who found themselves in classes with only a handful of people in them, and the people who heard their stories, that number probably seemed way too low.

That’s because it was.

In fact, school attendance records recently obtained from DeKalb School District 428 under the Freedom of Information Act show that students missed the equivalent of 870 attendance days that day. The attendance rate at the high school was 47 percent, records show.

District 428 Superintendent Doug Moeller said the reason for the discrepancy is that the reported number was how many students were called in before school even began; hundreds of others left after the day began.

“Some of those kids came down to the office, said my parent called and went out the front door – or they just walked out,” Moeller said.

There are 42 doors at the high school and they can’t be locked from the inside, Moeller said – it’s against the fire code.

The reason for many of those absences that day was the strife that came after the assembly the day before, including the things that were being said by their peers on social media.

We don’t seek to rehash the episode, however, in order for our community to have a meaningful dialogue about a problem, we must have a true understanding of its seriousness. The facts show that people were shaken up enough that the attendance rate at DHS was less than 50 percent Feb. 25.

They also show that attendance rebounded significantly Feb. 26 to 86 percent, and by the next Monday was back at average levels.

With their actions since this crisis, district officials have demonstrated they are taking the problem seriously.

The school’s principal has been placed on leave; an edition of the Barb Wire student newspaper gave students the opportunity to voice their opinions in writing to their peers.

Moeller said the district now has plans to train 15 to 20 staff members as certified social justice and diversity instructors who will lead staff workshops in all District 428 schools. There also are plans for facilitators to lead voluntary after-school sessions for students.

These are positive steps that some parents will agree are needed.

All we ask on behalf of the public is for a true accounting of problems when they occur so that all of us can be informed on the issues facing public schools.

Faith in financial system at historic low Americans’ faith in their financial system has rarely been so low. Presidential candidates in both parties, from Sen. Ted Cruz on the right to Sen. Bernie Sanders on the left, argue that our politicians are bought by Wall Street and that regulators are captured by the industries they oversee.

Eight years after the global financial crisis, politicians are tapping into deep skepticism among Americans about the way money flows here and around the world. The skepticism has had impact beyond the campaigns: It has helped stall, for instance, important trade agreements such as the Trans Pacific Partnership and stoked opposition to the Export-Import Bank.

Comes now one more blow. About 11.5 million documents taken from a single Panamanian law firm reveal the way the global elite – from world leaders to ordinary rich folks – have taken advantage on a massive scale of laws that permit secretive and often suspicious transactions to remain covert and nearly untraceable.

Already, Iceland’s prime minster has resigned.

Spanish authorities are looking into possible tax violations by an offshore firm revealed to be owned by the aunt of the reigning Spanish king.

So far, Americans have not been named among the dozen or so world leaders found to have had hidden interests in off-shore companies. But USA Today has reported that the documents do reveal that the

law firm in Panama has helped create more than 1,100 offshore firms in America in the past 15 years, mostly in Nevada and Wyoming. Indeed, Nevada is now one of the world’s 10 busiest tax havens, on a list that includes British Virgin Islands, the Bahamas and Samoa.

We should be clear: Establishing a company in Nevada, even if its owners, employees and primary business functions all are located in another country, isn’t usually illegal. It’s legal in the same way that major American corporations have in recent years kept profits from overseas sales parked in offshore accounts to avoid paying U.S. taxes.

But as President Barack Obama told reporters last week: “The problem is that a lot of this stuff is legal, not illegal.”

The U.S. Treasury Department is on the cusp of announcing another round of rules that will require banks to know who their customers are, and what their business is. That’s a start. A simpler tax code – with fewer incentives to shelter ownership – is another.

In the meantime, companies – and the law firms and accountants and banks that help them – that continue to use such tactics to avoid taxes and shield from scrutiny both their owners and their operations must cop to their role in furthering the mistrust ordinary Americans have for their financial system.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Gabriel had a little brother by now.

One morning, his mother said, “Let’s go to the park.” Gabriel paused and looked at her.

“What is it?” she asked.

“I was going to ask if I could keep this dress on, but I know the answer is ‘no.’ ” That weekend, the family of five went shopping to buy Gabriel three little dresses. The parents focused on Gabriel’s happiness and tried not to dwell on their fears.

Is he going to be beat up?

Is she going to be killed someday?

She. That came next, once Gabriel was ready to dress as a girl every day.

Through kindergarten and first grade, her classmates still called her Gabriel, regardless of the outfit of the day. In December of second grade, Gabriel told her parents he was ready.

“I want to do a pronoun change,” Gabriel said. “And I want to change my name.”

Her mother let her teacher know over the holiday break. Her response: “Awesome.” There are benefits to living in a

progressive community in California.

Acceptance tops the list.

One of Gabriel’s cousins said, “I’m going to have trouble remembering to call you ‘her’ and ‘she.’ ” Her reply: “Please try.”

Her aunts, who live on the East Coast, told her mother, “This would never fly at my kids’ schools.”

“Then we’re glad we live here,” she replied.

After the holiday break, 8-year-old Gabriel walked into school for the last time and signed up to speak during the special hour reserved that week for class discussion. Her close friend stood with her, holding her hand as she spoke.

“I know you’ve talked about whether I’m a boy or a girl,” she said. “I’m a girl.

My name is Rebecca.”

One girl expressed concern. “Does that mean you’re going to use the girls’ bathroom? I’m not sure about that.”

“I’ll be in a stall,” Rebecca assured her. That was that.

Rebecca walked out of the school that day.

Her mother says Rebecca is happier.

Calmer. “For the first time, she is comfortable in her skin,” she says. Rebecca has play dates and is invited to all the parties.

She’s 91/2 years old and a girl to everyone now, including strangers, and she no longer feels the need to wear dresses every day. “She doesn’t have to prove it so much anymore,” her mother says.

Her endocrinologist, a world-renowned expert for the transgender community, monitors Rebecca’s development and progress. Big decisions lie ahead. Her parents make clear that their love is unconditional, their support unequivocal.

“I am aware there will be hurdles,” her mother tells me. “I am aware that we live in a bubble right now.” The world, she says, can be a dangerous place for her Rebecca. For this reason, I am not using either of Rebecca’s real names.

If Rebecca were in North Carolina, the new anti-transgender law would force her to use the men’s room.

“It would be humiliating for her,” her mother says. “It could be dangerous, depending on who is in there.”

Even before she was wearing dresses, male strangers chased Rebecca out of men’s rooms because of her long hair, her pretty face.

Grown men yelling, “You don’t belong in here.”

“To my child,” the mother says.

“They did this to my child.”

What sort of running mate does Ted Cruz need?

By JENNIFER RUBIN The Washington Post At the town hall on CNN on Wednesday night, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, let on that he’s beginning the VP selection process. Of course he is; anyone with a well-organized campaign would start early, make his list, begin to vet and spend time with potential running mates. Failure to do so would be, well, as sloppy as failing to get slates of delegates elected in state contests.

Cruz was quite complimentary in the town hall toward a former rival, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida. He said, “He would be someone you’d be a fool not to look at seriously. He’s very, very talented.” Cruz was even more effusive, saying, “He ran a campaign that inspired millions of people. It inspired me.” That might have been diplomatic as he seeks to unify the party or tactical as he goes looking for delegates. He might also be seriously considering Rubio.

Taking a step back, it is worth considering what kind of VP Cruz wants or needs. There are four categories from which to choose.

First are those running mates who

could help him get the nomination.

For Cruz, that might mean picking someone with delegates (Rubio has 172, still more than Ohio Gov. John Kasich does), although any candidate’s ability to “deliver” his delegates once they become unbound is limited. Alternatively, Cruz might pick someone who could win over a critical delegation. Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina (which has 50 delegates) fits the bill.

Second are VPs who the candidate hopes could deliver a critical state in the general election.

This really has not worked out since JFK tapped LBJ in 1960. Since then, if a GOP candidate picked a running mate from a red state (as George W. Bush did with Dick Cheney), it was not a factor; and when he picked someone from a blue state, it did not make a difference. (Paul Ryan, now House speaker, couldn’t lock down Wisconsin, for example, in 2012).

In this case, however, Cruz might get a not-insignificant lift in Ohio either from picking Kasich (whose lack of discipline might make him more trouble than he’s worth) or Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, who also has extensive executive branch experience as trade representative and

director of the Office of Management and Budget. Like Joe Biden in 2008, Portman would have to run for reelection simultaneously; if he won, the governor would appoint someone of the same party to fill his seat.

The third group of VP possibilities consists of candidates who balance a ticket, providing more experience and/ or expertise in a policy area such as national security (Biden, Cheney). For Cruz, that might mean an experienced governor such as former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty or former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, who also is a veteran of the executive branch and would reassure establishment Republicans.

Current Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (previously a congressman) is also held in high regard among a broad array of Republicans. Unfortunately, because they are from the same state, Cruz could not pick an obvious “balancing” running mate, former governor Rick Perry, who has loads of executive experience and a military record. A different kind of “balance” for Cruz would be a woman, Carly Fiorina, Haley or New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez. He already has campaigned extensively with Fiorina,

and the two seem to genuinely like each other.

The last group of potential VPs would be those who reinforce the image of the presidential nominee, as Al Gore did for Bill Clinton in 1992, when they ran as two young moderates from the “new” South. This is where someone like Rubio (another young Sun Belt and first-generation American) would come in. Their spats over immigration would be no real barrier; whatever was said during the campaign could not compare with George H.W. Bush’s crack about “voodoo economics.” It did not stop him from being Reagan’s VP in 1980.

If a VP candidate can help with the nomination, later assist with a state or region, and provide balance, that’s even better. For Cruz, that might be Portman, Daniels, Pence or Martinez. Cruz will need to be as meticulous and thoughtful as he has been in constructing a welloiled campaign operation. After this primary season, he certainly would want a noncontroversial, widely popular pick.

When Gabriel was nearly 3 years old, he told his mother, “I’m sad.”

“Why?” she asked.

“I want to wear beautiful clothes. I want to grow a baby in my body.”

Over and over, the mother heard this longing of her child’s heart. Every time, she tried to reassure. “You want beautiful clothes?” she said. “I can take care of that.”

As for the baby? “You can be a parent,” she said. “You can love your child as much as I love you.”

She knew her answers were not enough. A parent knows such things.

Soon, Gabriel started trying on some of his sister’s clothes. She is only 15 months older, so they fit well enough.

Gabriel wore them only at home.

When he did, he felt beautiful.

One day, while still in preschool, Gabriel asked his mother, “Can I wear a dress to school?”

She hesitated. Another boy at the preschool dressed in dresses. “The only thing everyone knows about that boy is that he’s the boy who wears a dress,” she told her husband.

They agreed that Gabriel should wait.

“You can wear dresses at home,” they told their son, “but let’s not wear them to school yet.”

The parents talked to Gabriel’s teacher, who was thoughtful and kind.

“I wonder if you’re sending conflicting messages,” she told them.

Cohrs’ 1st home run sets tone Kaneland offense reemerges for 1st NI Big 12 East ‘W’

By EDDIE CARIFIO eacrifio@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – The robust Kaneland offense had been running into a few problems since the start of Northern Illinois Big 12 East Conference play, losing both softball games – including being shut out in one.

But the Knights’ bats woke up Thursday against Sycamore, bashing three home runs in an 8-1 win.

“We started off the year real hot with a real aggressive offensive, but we took our spring trip and when we came back, that offense hasn’t transpired for us,” Kaneland coach Mike Kuefler said. “Today it showed back up. Our defense and pitching has been real, real tight, and the offense hasn’t been there to support us.”

Cleanup hitter Meg Cohrs set the tone early for Kaneland (7-4 overall, 1-2 NI Big 12 East) with a two-run home run to left field with two outs in the first inning. After 10 homers last season, it was her first this year.

“That kid just swings the bat,” Kuefler said. “We had a conversation about two weeks ago, I told her, ‘Just to let it go, just swing the bat. You’re a free-swinging hitter and I want you to get back to that free swinging.’ And Danielle Guerra photos – dguerra@shawmedia.com she has.”

“You always want the first one, so it feels good,” Cohrs said. “I feel like once you get the first one, who knows what happens from there. Once Morgan hit her first, I was like, ‘Guys, the floodgates are open. Anyone can hit them now.’ It was nice.”

Sycamore (3-6, 1-2) scored an unearned run in the top of the second inning when Addison Foulk – pinch running for Lexi Gordon, who singled – scored on an error when Anna Criswell hit a grounder to third and Cohrs’ throw was offline. Kaneland starter Courtney Davis allowed only three hits the rest of the way, and the Spartans never got another runner past first.

whole careers,” Sycamore coach Jill Carpenter said. “You can’t avoid them all. We have to get the people out before them so maybe we can pitch a little different to them.”

Davis allowed only the one unearned run in seven innings, with five hits and no walks. She struck out five.

Lauren Wisdom had two of Sycamore’s hits.

“Courtney and Aly are throwing really well for us, and all the way around the infield and outfield, our defense is great,” Kuefler said. “It’s just our sticks have fallen asleep. Today, it was nice to see them break out a little bit.”

The Knights belted nine hits, including four in the sixth inning, in which they scored four and benefited from three Sycamore errors, all in a row. After Jesionowski’s inside-thepark homer to left put the Knights up 7-1, Weber walked and Cohrs ripped a liner to third. Criswell speared it in the air and threw out Cohrs at first, clearing the bases again with two outs. But back-to-back fielding errors on second baseman Joslin Peck, then a dropped line drive by center fielder Amanda Swedberg let another run score.

Seven of the eight Kaneland runs were charged to starter Madison Parks, who left after Jesionowski’s homer.

Batting ninth, Rachel Goress had three of Kaneland’s eight hits off Parks.

Carpenter said she felt her team played well outside of the sixth inning.

“We’ve got to be able to stop the bleeding, and we’ve talked about avoiding the big inning and stuff like that,” Carpenter said. “Anna makes a great play, but someone needs to step up and make a play after that. We should be pretty pumped on ‘D,’ and we haven’t been able to do that.”

We did eventually adjust from the fifth inning onward. I like how we worked hard, but it shouldn’t take us that long.”

When the Barbs (6-1, 1-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) finally did adjust in the fifth inning, they did so by playing a power game at the plate. Both Abby Taylor and JC Longeville hit RBI doubles in the inning. Taylor’s drove in two, and Longeville drove in one and scored on Taylor’s.

“I saw the ball better after a couple of at-bats,” Longeville said. “I had a better idea of where the pitch was going to be and where I should be in the batter’s box. I just found a pitch I liked and made good contact with it.”

DeKALB – The DeKalb softball team lost its first game of the year in heartbreaking fashion Thursday, giving up five runs in the top of the seventh inning in a 7-5 loss to Morris.

Barbs pitcher and Northwestern commit Morgan Newport said she and the team can use this loss as a learning moment.

“I just lost my focus toward the end, and with how deep Morris’s line up is, you can’t do that,” said Newport, who allowed four earned runs in 61/3 innings, striking out seven. “When you lose, you want to make it worth something. I think we’re going to learn how to buckle down and get those last three outs in the seventh inning as a result of today.”

By JOHN BUTKUS sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Jordan Wright’s two-run home run put the Sycamore baseball team ahead against Morris in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Spartans were unable to hold onto their one-run lead, falling, 5-4, in eight innings Thursday.

Sycamore (7-3, 2-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) struggled to get runners on base in the early innings against Morris (6-9, 1-2 NI Big 12 East) pitcher Colton Akre, who pitched an efficient game for the better part of the matchup until he faced Wright in the bottom of the fifth inning.

“That first pitch he threw me was a hanging curveball over the plate.”

Wright said. “Initially, I was just seeing fastballs from him, but he just laid it over and I put a good swing on it. He was pitching lefties away, so I recognized that early and just sat back and hit it hard.”

Wright went 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Akre worked efficiently by forcing Sycamore batters to hit to his fielders and keeping a low pitch count during the first four innings – throwing 40

After Longeville grounded into a fielder’s choice that saw Erin Karasewski get cut down at the plate by a force out, the Barbs couldn’t get another run across. At that point, they went into the seventh leading, 4-2.

Morris (10-2, 3-0) didn’t hit the ball especially hard, but it did place the ball well and took advantage of some defensive miscues.

“We fielded the balls that we should have fielded, but there are some balls that they placed that we needed to get to,” Davis said. “It pro-

pitches in those innings. Akre allowed five hits total in the fourth and fifth innings, but gave up only two hits the rest of the game – finishing the game with seven hits and two strikeouts after seven innings.

Morris coach Todd Kein said. “It’s so important for our pitchers to work efficiently. We’re really good at coming out early and scoring first, and that’s kind of where it has ended for us this year. We were able to get that early run and keep their batters at bay for a few innings, and I wanted to see Colton in those situations late in the game, and, luckily, he was able to battle through it.”

The Spartans were unable to retire batters throughout the game and in key situations down the stretch of the game. Sycamore pitchers combined to allow 13 hits and two in the top of the eighth, giving Morris the lead to close out the Spartans. Morris was led by Michael Metcsh, who finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs. “We’re struggling defensively,” Sycamore coach Jason Cavanaugh said.

“We’re having trouble picking the ball off the ground, and it’s not an easy day to do it, and somehow we just have to make a play defensively. The Barbs face Sycamore today in a continuation of a game from April 5. The game will start in the top of the fourth with DeKalb ahead, 3-1.

Down 0-2 in the count, Jack Warner hit a bases-loaded, one-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Hinckley-Big Rock baseball team a 4-3 win over Serena on Thursday in Hinckley.

Jacob Morsch (2-2) picked up the win for the Royals, striking out 11 and allowing four hits in the complete game. He walked three, and two of the runs he allowed were earned.

“Jack was fooled with two curveballs and was able to wait back on the third to drive it up the middle with the infield playing in,” H-BR coach Brandon Jackson said. “We have been struggling on waiting back on off-speed pitches the whole year, and Jack played it perfectly. As for Morsch, he had his typical game of high strikeouts and keeping us in the game. I was just glad we gave him the run support tonight so he could get the win he deserves.”

Morsch helped himself, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs, including the tying RBI in the seventh.

Kaneland loses: At LaSalle, LaSalle-Peru scored one run in the bot-

tom of the seventh to knock off the Knights, 4-3.

The Cavaliers scored two in the first, but the Knights took the lead with a three-run fifth. Joe Laudont hit a two-run, two-out triple to score Josh Pollastrini and Jake Marczuk, then scored on a fielding error. But L-P tied the score in the fifth and won it with a sacrifice play in the seventh.

Clark Hendricks went 21/3 innings for the Knights in relief, allowing no earned runs and taking the loss.

Will Ring had three of Kaneland’s six hits.

Indian Creek routs LaMoille: Brock Myers hit a home run and the Timberwovles won, 12-2.

Ray Ragan threw two innings of hitless ball for the win. Emerson White was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, Trevor Guerra added two hits and Joe Wilson had two.

G-K blanked by Rockford Christian: At Rockford, the Cogs’ defense committed seven errors and had only two runners reach base in a six-inning loss.

Meet 2015-2016 Class Member

The 2016 NFL schedule was released, and for the first time since 2009, the Bears will open the season on the road with their game against the Texans.

Despite a 6-10 record last season, the Bears will have four primetime games this season, coming in the form of a pair of back-to-back night games in the schedule, starting in Week 2 when they host the Eagles in their home opener on “Monday Night Football.”

The next week, the Bears travel to Dallas to play the Cowboys on “Sunday Night Football.”

In Week 4, the Bears host the Lions, then they travel to Indianapolis to play the Colts on Oct. 9 and come back home Oct. 16 to host the Jaguars.

The Bears will be on primetime at Lambeau Field against the Packers for the sixth season in a row, this year on a Thursday night in Week 7 (Oct. 20).

With extra rest, the Bears will return

home to host the Vikings on “Monday Night Football” on Halloween in Week 8.

That precedes the Bears’ Week 9 bye.

After the bye, the Bears go on the road for back-to-back games against the Buccaneers in Tampa and the Giants at the Meadowlands. The Bears return home for games against the Titans and 49ers before playing the Lions in Detroit.

The Bears will be home for some of the holidays, hosting the Packers on Dec. 18 and then Washington on Christmas Eve, which is a Saturday.

For the second time in three years, the Bears will conclude their season against the Vikings in Minneapolis, this time at the Vikings’ new stadium. That game will be played on New Year’s Day. All in all, the Bears have four primetime games, 12 noon games, 10 games on Fox, three on CBS, two on ESPN and one on NBC.

CHICAGO – Jason Hammel pitched six scoreless innings, drove home one run and scored another to lead the Cubs to an 8-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday night for their best start since 1969.

The Cubs swept the three-game series and improved to 8-1 for the first time in 47 years.

They won 11 of 12 to start the ’69 season en route to a second-place Jason Hammel finish.

Dexter Fowler and Addison Russell had three hits each for the Cubs, and Kris Bryant hit his second home run.

Hammel (1-0) allowed four hits, walked four and struck out three on 88 pitches in chilly weather.

Raisel Iglesias (1-1) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks over five innings.

White Sox 3, Twins 1: At Minneapolis, Minnesota dropped to 0-9 for the worst start by any major league team in 13 years, falling to Mat Latos, Avisail Garcia and the Sox.

The Twins have scored only 14 runs this season. According to STATS research, the last big league team to lose its first nine games was Detroit in 2003, when the Tigers finished 43119.

The Sox (7-2) won their fourth in a row, extending their best start since an 8-1 run in 1981. They’re 6-1 on the road and recorded their first sweep at Minnesota since 2012.

Latos (2-0) gave up one run and three hits in six innings.

Latos has started strong with his new team, allowing only four hits, two walks and one run in 12 innings and two turns. The right-hander signed a one-year, $3 million contract the week before spring training began.

Ervin Santana (0-1) allowed three runs in seven innings.

Garcia caused the biggest problem for Santana. The burly designated hitter drove a two-out fastball into the open grass behind the center-field wall for a solo home run in the fourth.

Garcia hit a double about as hard leading off the seventh inning and came around on a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly.

Fitness was assessed by how many minutes study participants could exercise on a treadmill test before becoming too tired to continue. The test first was performed when a person enrolled in the study. It was repeated in most of the study participants seven years later.

The people who were the most fit when the study began had a lower risk of developing heart disease and of dying prematurely. For each extra minute people were fit enough to exercise on the treadmill, their risk of developing heart disease was lowered by 12 percent, and their risk of death was lowered by 15 percent.

The people who stayed fit when retested seven years later also had lower risks of heart disease and death than those who did not. The least-fit young adults were most likely to develop thickened heart muscle that was straining to do its job.

It’s hoped the study will continue to follow its participants for another 15 to 20 years. If so, we could learn for sure whether those who stayed fit all of their adult lives did better than those who started regular exercise in their 50s or later. That would give a better answer to your question. However, based on everything we know, my advice is you start a program of regular exercise now.

Dear Dr. K: I believe you when you say regular exercise protects my health. But I’m just 20. For me the question is, when should I begin regular exercise? The diseases exercise protects against usually don’t develop until a person is older than 60. I’d like not to have to worry about exercise for a few decades.

Dear Reader: I wish I could rid you of that worry. But, in fact, if you already are not exercising regularly, you probably are putting your health at risk 30 years from now. Many of the diseases exercise protects against actually start in young adulthood and take decades to become severe enough to cause symptoms. For example, autopsy studies have been performed on soldiers killed in war – people your age. They reveal many already have early signs of atherosclerosis, the cause of heart attacks, strokes and premature death.

Many studies have shown people who exercise regularly have lower rates of heart disease, strokes, diabetes and several types of cancer. It is true those studies usually have been done in adults older than age 50. However, a new study of young adults, like you, comes to the same conclusion.

The study was performed at Johns Hopkins and was published in the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine.

Almost 5,000 young adults, ages 18 to 30, were included. Then they were followed for almost 27 years. The study participants came from different geographic areas in the United States. There were both males and females and people of different racial and ethnic groups.

The study did not measure how much the study participants exercised. Instead, it measured the physical fitness of these

Well, unless someone is severely disabled – which you are not – crutches are meant to be temporary. Among the warning signs of an abuser is being controlling and preventing his victim from forming healthy relationships with other people. Another red flag is if the person chips away at his victim’s self-esteem by saying she/he “can’t survive without him.”

That you want something better for yourself and know you deserve better is a sign you still have some healthy self-esteem. So please act on it. End this relationship and don’t look back.

Dear Abby: I am a postal worker. With wedding and graduation seasons fast approaching, please pass along some suggestions to your readers: Before addressing envelopes, please make sure your address books are up to date. We do everything in our power to make sure all mail gets to where it is supposed to be, but you’d be shocked how often it’s addressed to someone who moved many years ago – or worse, is deceased.

Be sure to include the recipient’s last name and try not to use nicknames. If the address is off by a little bit, a last name on the envelope sometimes is helpful. You might think everyone knows Uncle Bob as “Moose.” But as carriers, unless we know the recipient personally, we only know his or her proper name.

And don’t forget to include your return address on the envelope so if it can’t be delivered, you’ll know the recipient didn’t receive it. That way, you won’t think “Aunt Ann” didn’t want to attend or have her think she wasn’t invited.

And last but not least, be sure to have proper postage on the envelope. Often, due to the size or thickness of an invitation, extra postage is needed. I hope this will help your readers. –
