By COLLEEN LONG The Associated Press NEW YORK – Even in an era of high-tech crime-fighting, the best line of defense against a Brussels-style attack on airports and subways has four legs and a tail.

Dogs, with their exquisitely sensitive noses, have been trained in recent years to pick up the scent of explosives on people moving through crowded concourses, and so far they have proved a better early warning system than anything engineers have come up with.

“They outperform both men and machines,” said James Waters, chief of the New York City Police Department’s counterterrorism unit, which just this week graduated its latest squad of dogs capable of following the vapor from explosives such as the terrorist bomb-making material of the moment, TATP. But experts said there are not enough of these “vapor wake” dogs to go around. Only about 130 have gotten the patented training nationwide since its development about a decade ago. And only one dog is in Europe, according to the chief trainer.

For security reasons, NYPD won’t say how many of these dogs it has to cover the nation’s largest subway system, with more than 400 stations and millions of riders.

New York’s department already has 36,000 officers, employs counterterrorism analysts, created specialized counterterror units and uses a highly sophisticated computer system linked to surveillance footage that can spot a bag sitting for too long. It also has 100 other dogs, including traditional bomb-sniffers and drug dogs.

The NYPD’s newly graduated class of eight “vapor wake” dogs underwent 15 months of training to sniff out explosive particles in the heat plume left by humans as they walk through a crowd, then follow the scent to the source. They’re different from traditional bomb-sniffing dogs trained to smell a stationary object.

A dog has 200 million olfactory sensors in its nose. By contrast, the human nose has 5 million. Even though dogs get tired and distracted, no technology can match one, officials say.

One that may come close is under development at the University of Rhode Island, where professor Otto Gregory created an electronic sensor designed to continuously monitor an area, unlike a quick swab of a hand or luggage, for vapors from explosives. The sensor hasn’t been deployed in any real-world sce-

narios yet. But one advantage is that it doesn’t need training or breaks, as dogs do.

“Think of it as an electronic dog’s nose that would run 24/7,” said Gregory, a chemical engineering professor.

Other animals with sophisticated olfactory ability could theoretically be used, including elephants and even rats. But the canine’s special social relationship with humans makes it uniquely suitable.

Dog trainers generally say Labrador retrievers are best because they are social and not aggressive. Spaniels, German pointers and other breeds also are used.

“They have an incredible capability for the detection of hazardous chemicals. But even the canine, we look at it as a technology, and over the years the instrumentation has advanced, the proactive nature of dogs has advanced and is still advancing,” said Paul Waggoner of Auburn University’s veterinary school, which pioneered the vapor wake training.

Prosecutor: Jack McCullough wrongfully convicted in 1957 murder

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack said Friday that the 76-year-old man serving a life sentence in Sycamore’s most notorious murder case had been wrongfully convicted, possibly clearing the way for Jack McCullough to walk free as soon as Tuesday.

In an answer to McCullough’s appeal for post-conviction relief, Schmack said the state joins in McCullough’s request to set aside his conviction because he was arrested under false pretenses and because evidence proves that he could not have been in Sycamore when 7-year-old Maria Ridulph was abducted Dec. 3, 1957. Her body was found in April 1958 in Jo Daviess County.

“The people are ethically compelled and constrained to admit the existence of clear and convincing evidence showing Defendant to have been convicted of an offense which he did not commit,” Schmack wrote.

McCullough, who was 17 when Maria disappeared, has long maintained his innocence in her murder. A hearing is set for Tuesday in DeKalb County Court before Judge William Brady.

In a scathing court filing questioning the ethics of almost everyone involved, including his predecessor, Clay Campbell, Schmack accused police and prosecutors of “almost systematic concealment of the truth” and said McCullough received unfair treatment from start to finish as he was railroaded to a conviction in Maria Ridulph’s 1957 abduction and murder.

“I know that there are people who will never believe that [McCullough] is not responsible for the crime,” Schmack said in a written statement.

“Many of these people are my neighbors in Sycamore. But I cannot allow that to sway me from my sworn duty to support the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution of the State of Illinois, and to perform faithfully the primary duty of my office, ‘to seek justice, not merely to convict.’ “ Schmack’s conclusions are based in part upon police and FBI reports from 1957 and 1958, which were ruled inadmissible in McCullough’s 2012 tri-

There also was newly discovered evidence, Schmack said, confirming that McCullough placed a call from the downtown Rockford Post Office at 401 S. Main St. A panel of appellate judges found the old reports should have been

admitted, but also found that evidence wouldn’t have changed the outcome of the trial.

In a six-month review, Schmack determined that the evidence should have exonerated McCullough. The state’s timeline for Maria’s killing, which was one of the weakest parts of its case, fell apart when compared with the 1957 reports, he said.

“It is a manifest impossibility for [McCullough] to have been in Sycamore at 6:45 and also have made a

phone call in downtown Rockford at 6:57,” Schmack said. “Thousands of pages of improperly excluded police reports more than 20 years old contain a wealth of information pointing to McCullough’s innocence, and absolutely nothing showing guilt.”

In his summary of his findings, Schmack also said that key state witnesses were wrong. Kathy Sigman Chapman, who was playing with Maria at the time she disappeared, was guided toward identifying McCullough in a photo lineup that Schmack called “suggestive in the extreme.”

“Her selection in 2010 of a blackand-white headshot of him as a teenager is clearly an unintentional and tragic mistake on her part,” the prosecutor said.

McCullough was convicted by Kane County Judge James Hallock and sentenced to life in prison in 2012 in connection with the 1957 murder of 7-yearold Maria Ridulph, of Sycamore.

Kathy Chapman, who was then known as Kathy Sigman, was playing with Maria the evening she was abducted from the corner of Archie Place and Center Cross Street in Sycamore, near her home. Chapman identified McCullough’s photo from an array of pictures in 2010, in a process that DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack described as “suggestive in the extreme,” concluding that she made a mistake in identifying McCullough as the person who took Maria.

“I was present when Kathy made her identification of the photo,” Mike Chapman said by email. “I saw no differences in the photos myself. She was positive then and she’s positive now.

“Jack’s picture matched her description of the Jack she saw that night.”

reported to police in 2008 that her mother, in 1994, had told her that McCullough had killed Maria and she had to tell someone.

“A judge found him guilty, he’s in prison,” Tessier said. “There are people who probably are going to say he’s not guilty for the rest of his life, and so be it, I’m convinced of his guilt.

“I don’t know what else to say to convince people that this is the way things

are, and I just wish that it wasn’t being used as a political tug-of-war for the state’s attorney’s office.”

Schmack also took Illinois State Police and lead investigator Brion Hanley to task for their handling of the case. Hanley, who was named Illinois State Police Investigator of the Year in 2013 for his work on the case, “knew, or should have known, that [McCullough] could have not have been involved in Maria Ridulph’s murder.”

State police issued a statement Friday saying “The ISP conducted a thorough investigation of the 55-year cold case murder of 7-year-old Maria Ridulph in consultation with the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office.”

Former State’s Attorney Clay Campbell, the prosecutor who secured a conviction of McCullough, declined to comment Friday.

Charles Ridulph, Maria’s older brother, was frustrated by the way Schmack had handled the case.

“There’s been no one speaking for us at all,” Ridulph said. “[Schmack] said he doesn’t speak for the victims.

That’s what he told us when we asked that.”

I’ll be honest with you I have always been a planner and my best decisions have always been after careful consideration and a great deal of thought. Voter turnout topped 47 percent in March primary

By RHONDA GILLESPIE rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Preliminary data shows that voter turnout for the March 15 primary election topped 47 percent with nearly 5,000 casting early or same-day votes.

“The voters, the staff, everybody in DeKalb County, we get it done,” said Doug Johnson, the county clerk. His office oversees elections.

There are 56,303 registered voters in DeKalb County and 26,468 cast ballots in the primary. There were 3,756 voters who cast ballots during the early voting period and 1,055 who registered and voted in the same day, according to election officials.

The cities of DeKalb (19,676) and Sycamore (9,422) have the most registered voters, according to election data, and turnout in those cities was about the same as the average for the county.

The numbers are still preliminary and unofficial until Johnson’s office certifies them, which, by law, has to be done by Tuesday. Election officials report that, as of Thursday, there were 49 ballots still to be counted.

Mark Fischer, a Sycamore resident, said that he always votes in the primaries. “[Voting] is a good thing to do,” he said. “We’ve been seeing more about it this year than any other year.”

Some townships, such as Afton (52 percent) and Milan (53 percent) saw even higher turnout. In South Grove Township, 180 of 317 registered voters

Also, the number of precincts was reduced to 65 – down from 90 in 2012 – because of “population shifts and growth.”

Johnson said the changes had no noteworthy impact on the election.

“We did have a few people – and we were prepared for that – that went to their old precinct, polling place or didn’t know where they were,” said Johnson. He said election officials helped get those people to the right place so they could vote.

The Starbucks on Sycamore Road in DeKalb may become one of about 50 locations in Illinois that will offer a “Starbucks Evenings” menu, which includes wine, beer and small plates like flatbreads or macaroni and cheese.

The process is in the early stages and permit filing is just one of many steps that the corporation has to take

before designating the shop, a Starbucks spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

The potential new offering may be a jumping off point for the city to explore changes to its current liquor laws.

Restaurants that serve alcohol are required to to only serve booze to patrons who buy meals. So, for example, a diner can’t just order chips and salsa and have a drink.

MALTA – April Clark, an assistant professor of political science at Northern Illinois University, will be presenting “Women and Politics: Engagement, Leadership and Perceptions” from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday at Kishwaukee College.

In her presentation, Clark will be discussing changes in the status of women in political life, devoting particular attention to participation patterns as well as public perceptions and media portrayals of women as candidates for public office. She will conclude with some reflections on the political sphere is shaped by gender and what recent shifts in American public

opinion and politics might mean for women as a group and for the larger society, according to a news release from Kishwaukee College.

In addition to being an assistant professor at NIU, Clark is a senior associate at the Center for Governmental Studies and specializes in the development of political attitudes and behavior with a particular focus on group differences. She has published on a number of topics including social capital, interpersonal trust and democratic norm support. Clark was previously a research associate at the Pew Research Center.

SYCAMORE – The Midwest Museum of Natural History, 425 W. State St., is gearing up for Spring Break, today through April 2, with family fun. Gas prices creeping up, nearing $2 a gallon Ease Into Spring at the

By RHONDA GILLESPIE rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Another sure sign of season change, according to an industry analyst: higher gas prices.

“Rising gas prices are the first real sign of spring,” said Phil Flynn, an energy analyst for The PRICE Futures Group in Chicago.

Gas prices per gallon in the DeKalb and Sycamore areas have hovered at $1.99 all week, after climbing penniesat-a-time over the past few weeks from prices as low as $1.59.

Flynn said this latest price increase is due to the fact that oil companies, lately, aren’t making as much money.

The cost of crude is less than $40 per barrel, as of the close of trading on March 24, according to NASDAQ. The analyst also explained that refineries are also changing machinery over to prepare for production of summertime gas blends.

“Supplies are ample but demand for gas is at a record high for this time of year,” he said.

The fluctuation of gas prices is “aggravating,” according to motorists like

Christopher Moorehouse. He’s paid a little bit more lately to fill up his Dodge Caravan. But the Sycamore resident said the latest prices are a far cry better than what he paid a few years back when he lived in southern California.

Moorehouse said he remembers $4 to $5 prices per gallon when he lived out west. And as of today, California is leading the nation with an average gas price of $2.74 per gallon, according to a AAA report.

“I’m glad I’m not in Cali now,” he said, after paying $34.51 for a fill up at Phillips 66 on Bethany Road in Sycamore.

The local pump price was palpable for motorists like Eboni Bowie. Her Hyundai Accent took just less than $16 to fill up at Casey’s on Annie Glidden Road and Hillcrest Drive.

“That’s cheap” the Northern Illinois University senior said, as she prepared to head home to Chicago for the weekend. Bowie said she’s confident gas is higher in her hometown.

She’s right about that, according to the AAA report. The average price for gas in the Windy City is $2.20, the report indicates.

CSA farming keeps the Prchal family of Poplar Grove busy year-round. When they’re not dropping off vegetables in the suburbs and in DeKalb, the Prchals are out in the fields working. During the winter months, Chris and Marcy Prchal of Trogg’s Hollow, 11577 Poplar Grove Road in Poplar Grove, give shareholders storage crops, including carrots, turnips, potatoes, apples and canned and frozen vegetables. Trogg’s Hollow has about two acres of vegetable farmland and one acre of animal pastures. Consumers can purchase add-on shares of

eggs, chickens and honey.

“We’re constantly working, from plowing and seeding vegetable beds to attending farmers markets,” Marcy Prchal said. “Our four kids are homeschooled, and they’re out there with us.

The biggest benefit is being a family and being together, learning and working together.”

CSA farmers can plan their planting season and prepare their ground, but there is one thing they cannot predict: the weather. Adams said heavy rainfall in June and July last year caused him to lose more than 10,000 crops and more than $2,000 in planted seeds.

“Last year, the rain was horrible, and it was out of my control,” Adams said.

“There was nothing I could do. I have added a drainage system to the upper field, so that flooding and rotting seeds won’t be a problem again this year.”

To germinate seeds early and to protect the seedlings from frost, CSA farmers build greenhouses. Seeds are often put into seed-starting trays, but larger crops, including corn and tomato plants, can be planted in the ground inside the greenhouse.

In 2012, Jennifer Soule of the 12-acre Soule Solstice Farm, 10 N. 853 Lukens Road in Sycamore, built a passive solar heat winter greenhouse. The green-

house, which uses all-natural heating from the sun and 55-gallon drums of water, allows Soule to grow up to 12 different types of microgreens and salad greens year-round for members of the farm’s weekly club.

Although CSA farmers sell shares of their farms to community members in the same vicinity, the farmers consider themselves friends, not competitors.

“We’re all in this together, facing the same challenges,” Marcy Prchal said.

“We share equipment, give advice and talk to each other. We help each other when we can. Nobody’s in this to make a million. Our personal goal is to be sustainable, grow healthy vegetables for everyone to eat, to feed our kids and keep a roof over our head.”

Adams said his goal is to support the local economy and to pass on his farming knowledge to future generations.

Whitacre said her 2-year-old daughter Cynthia loves to help her farm and already has started to ask when the cherry tomatoes will be ready to harvest.

“The other day, Cynthia told me that her dream is to be a farmer,” Whitacre said. “She said that she wants to farm like me when she grows up. It’s fulfilling to be able to share my love of farming and of vegetables with my family and with the community.”

n 2008, Kate Whitacre of Sycamore was in college studying African studies, hoping to change food justice and accessibility. When she volunteered on a farm in Manteno, she knew she had found her true calling: farming.

“After that first day, my mind was changed,” Whitacre said. “I knew that this is what I had to do with the rest of my life. I love being outside in the open air and being able to provide good food for everybody.”

Whitacre is the owner of Beets + Beats Farm, 12232 N. Grove Road in Sycamore, a certified naturally grown farm that participates in Community Supported Agriculture.

In a CSA, community members pledge to support a farm by becoming shareholders. The shareholders pledge in advance to cover the anticipated costs of the farm operation and farmer’s salary, sharing the risks and benefits of food production with the growers.

In return for monetarily supporting the farm, shareholders receive portions of the crops grown throughout the season. CSAs offer different share options, with participants receiving fresh, in-season vegetables and herbs bi-weekly, weekly or yearly. CSA farmers also attend farmers markets throughout the summer months.

For community members who cannot afford to purchase a share of her CSA, Whitacre has started a CSA scholarship fund. Members of the community can donate money to the fund to help deflate CSA costs for people who are interested in participating but cannot afford it.

Although corn and soybean farmers wait until after the season’s last frost to plant seeds, CSA farmers have already planted seeds inside their greenhouses and outdoors.

“Farmer Wayne” Adams, owner of The Farmer’s Garden, 8091 S. Mayfield Road in DeKalb, is determined to have sweet corn on the Fourth of July.

This year, Adams will plant more than 100,000 plants including 100 different types and varieties on his five-acre farm.

“I have more than 40 types of tomatoes, 15 varieties of eggplant and 12 different types of cucumbers,” Adams said. “If you can name it, I grow it.”

Whitacre said she grows any kind of vegetable imaginable, including ones that some people have never heard of before, like kohlrabi or Swiss chard.

At trial, McCullough’s half-sister, Janet Tessier, testified that weeks before her death in 1994, their mother had told her “those two little girls, the one that disappeared, John did it. You’ve got to tell somebody.”

But Schmack said that Caulfield, who testified that Maria had disappeared earlier than 6:45 p.m., was disproved by “newly discovered documents,” which prove that Maria’s abduction was not reported until 8 p.m. and so there could not have been anyone out searching for her at 7 p.m.

“This has been horrible. It’s been horrible since Schmack has been involved in this,” he said. “There’s been no one

speaking for us at all. He says he doesn’t speak for the victims. That’s what he told us when we asked.

“Schmack has ignored not only previous rulings, but also all other evidence, especially he is ignoring the time frame schedule presented in the 1958 state police report.”

Schmack said he undertook his investigation of the case hoping to find that it really had been solved.

“When I began this lengthy review, I had expected to find some reliable evidence that the right man had been convicted,” Schmack wrote. “No such evidence could be discovered.”

about seeing a search party looking for Maria at 7 p.m. that night, was mistaken. A Christmas party she was at that night was from 7 to 9 p.m., not 5 to 7 p.m., Schmack said.

Schmack’s position surprised many in the community, including Charles Ridulph, Maria’s older brother, who still lives in Sycamore.

He called Schmack’s court filing “ridiculous.” Ridulph said Schmack was totally disregarding all the other evidence that pointed to McCullough’s guilt, including later police reports from 1958, which changed the original time frame.

“A few months ago [Schmack] gave me a copy of his time frame, and I went through that and it just made me sick,” Ridulph said. “There’s a reason that none of [the old police reports were] allowed into evidence to begin with, because there were so many discrepancies and you couldn’t cross-examine it.”

Campbell, a Republican, was DeKalb County State’s Attorney in September 2012 when Kane County Associate Judge James Hallock found McCullough guilty and sentenced him to life in prison. It was touted as the oldest cold case to be solved in American history and inspired a couple of books, including Charles Lachman’s “Footsteps in the Snow.”

Lachman, who donated part of the proceeds from his extensively researched book to Maria’s memory, said he knew Schmack had reservations about the case but was surprised by his complete repudiation of it.

“I think what’s most surprising to me is that he doesn’t say there’s reasonable doubt, which reasonable people might conclude, he’s declaring McCullough innocent,” Lachman said.

Lachman also said that Schmack had ignored an Illinois State Police report compiled in July 1958 about the case which suggested that Maria might have been kidnapped earlier.

McCullough’s family hopes for quick release

By BRETT ROWLAND browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The county’s top prosecutor’s announcement Friday that he believed Jack McCullough had been wrongfully convicted of murder had some members of the 76-year-old’s family were praying he would be released from prison as soon as Tuesday.

Janey O’Connor, McCullough’s stepdaughter, said she was eager for McCullough’s conviction in the 1957 murder of 7-year-old Maria Ridulph to be set aside, and for him to return to Washington state as quickly as possible.

“I’d like to think that Tuesday, he’ll walk out of jail and get on a plane to Seattle,” O’Connor said. “But the wheels of justice move slowly. This is a slow process.”

She blamed what she called a miscarriage of justice on former DeKalb County State’s Attorney Clay Campbell and Illinois State Police investigator Brion Hanley.

“They knew [Jack McCullough] didn’t do it, they misled judges, they misled the public,” O’Connor said. “What they did should be criminal.”

Over the years, she said she had learned not to get too excited, too hopeful. Many times her hopes for her husband’s return had been dashed.

“I’m going to have to see him to believe it,” Sue McCullough said. “Every time we’ve tried to get him out, something has happened. We’ve been disappointed so many times. We’ve been hopeful many times and been shot down every time. It’s hard to believe it’s going

to happen.”

She said she talks to her husband, who is serving a life sentence at Pontiac Correctional Center, almost daily. His absence from her life has been acute.

For many years after an arm injury, she had to have a friend come help her get dressed. That wouldn’t have happened if her husband had been there.

“He’s been gone for five years – that’s a long time,” she said. “I’ve gotten used to living alone.”

Sue McCullough said she has never doubted her husband’s innocence.

If Jack McCullough is released, his wife said he should be compensated.

Jack McCullough has suffered in prison, including being stabbed in the face and eye, she said.

Janey O’Connor said her stepfather’s conviction has been hardest on her mother and her children, 14-yearold Emily and 11-year-old Andrew. For years, she had assumed her children would never get to see their grandfather again.

“I thought their grandpa was going to die in prison,” she said.

Before his arrest in 2011, Jack McCullough would pick up the kids every Friday to take them shopping and out for lunch. He once bought Emily a 5-foottall teddy bear. When O’Connor suggested it might be time to toss out the bear, her daughter wouldn’t even consider it.

This week, the kids have been asking when their grandfather will come back – a question O’Connor can’t answer.

Even after the news broke Friday, O’Connor’s thoughts extended beyond her family to Sycamore.

“My heart breaks for Maria Ridulph’s family,” she said. “Convicting the wrong guy has hurt them, too.”

Rauner: Formula for school funding can be rewritten over time

PAXTON – Gov. Bruce Rauner said an overhaul of Illinois’ outdated school funding formula can be done over time.

Rauner supports a rewrite but said the formula is complex and broken, and changing it will take time. The Republican said he doesn’t want to hold up the budget and funding schools if it takes longer than August.

The Champaign News-Gazette reported Rauner spoke Thursday in the east central Illinois community of Paxton.

Lawmakers from both parties agree the formula, last changed in 1997, should be revised over concerns it penalizes students in poorer districts. But they’ve bickered over the timing and approach during an election year.

SIU-Carbondale trustees increase tuition by 3 percent

EDWARDSVILLE – Southern Illinois University’s board of trustees has voted to increase tuition for fall at the school’s Carbondale campus by 3 percent.

The vote Thursday means the price of tuition for new students will increase $264 to $9,099.

The increase will not affect existing students.

The cost of 15 mandatory student fees will remain the same, while room-and-board fees will increase 1.9 percent to $10,186. That brings the total in-state cost of an SIU education to $22,417.

The board also boosted several fees paid by students attending SIU-Edwardsville.

Leading private-sector health system woos veterans in ads

JOHNSON The Associated Press CHICAGO – A leading hospital system in the U.S. is courting military veterans with a multimillion-dollar ad campaign, raising concerns from some veterans groups that private sector marketing could weaken the Department of Veterans Affairs health care system.

The campaign tag lines – “Veterans have a choice in healthcare” and “You honored your oath, and so do we” – emphasize consumer preference and the shared values of medical professionals and the military.

Starting Monday, TV, radio, print and online ads by St. Louis-based Ascension Health’s will urge veterans to call a toll-free number for information about Veterans Choice, the cornerstone of the VA overhaul approved in 2014, which makes it easier for veterans to receive federally paid medical care from local doctors.

Veterans groups said it’s the first large-scale marketing to Choice-eligible veterans.

Vets are wary of proposals to privatize the VA health system and fear that draining off patients and dollars could hurt the VA in the long term, said Louis Celli of the American Legion, the nation’s largest veterans group. While they supported the Choice legislation after a scandal over long wait times and falsified records, most want the program to remain temporary, he said.

More than 4.6 million veterans used VA health care last year, and the VA said it has reduced its waiting list while authorizing millions of veterans to receive care in the private sector.

Some veterans groups are skeptical, however, about whether Ascension can live up to its marketing.

“How many mechanical arms have they fitted recently?” said Celli after seeing an Ascension ad depicting a veteran with a prosthetic arm.

U.S. moving to increase troop presence in Iraq The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – The Pentagon said Friday it was moving to increase the number of American troops in Iraq amid new strikes this week that killed the Islamic State’s finance minister and other senior leaders. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said the U.S. progress in eliminating members of the IS “cabinet” was hampering its ability to conduct and inspire attacks against the West. The announcement came as the battle to retake the Syrian city of Palmyra entered its third day and Iraqi forces continued their march to recapture Mosul. A suicide bombing in a soccer stadium south of Baghdad, killing nearly 30 people, underscored the difficult fight ahead.

Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told Pentagon reporters that recommendations on ways to increase U.S. support for Iraq’s ground fight against IS will be discussed with President Barack Obama soon.

“The secretary and I both

believe that there will be an increase in U.S. forces in Iraq in coming weeks, but that decision hasn’t been made,” Dunford said. He did not say how big that increase might be.

He and Carter said accelerating the campaign against the Islamic State will include more assistance such as the artillery fire and targeting help that U.S. Marines provided earlier this week to Iraqi forces advancing on Mosul. But they said American forces remain well behind the front lines.

“I think there’s a lot of reasons for us to be optimistic about the next several months,” Dunford said. “But by no means would I say that we’re about to break the back of ISIL or that the fight is over.”

Using an acronym for the militant group, Carter said the U.S. is “systematically eliminating ISIL’s cabinet,” killing several key members in strikes this week.

Carter would not provide details about the strikes, but a senior U.S. official said the group’s financial minister was killed along with two associates in a U.S. raid in Syria. The official was not authorized to discuss the operations so spoke on thecondition of anonymity.

Carter said the finance

minister, who is known by several names, including Abdul-Rahman Mustafa al-Qaduli and Haji Imam, was a “wellknown terrorist” who had a hand in terrorist plots outside of Iraq and Syria.

He said al-Qaduli has been associated with IS dating back to its earliest iteration as al-Qaida in Iraq. He said he had worked under Abu Musab al-Zarqawi as a liaison for operations in Pakistan and was “responsible for some external affairs and plots.”

Carter said he was not aware of any link between al-Qaduli and this week’s terrorist attacks in Brussels.

In a separate operation, a U.S. airstrike in Mosul killed another top IS leader, the official said. Carter identified the man as Abu Sarah and said he was one of the leaders charged with paying militant fighters in northern Iraq.

The successful attacks are part of a string of recent strikes targeting the leadership of the group, which has lost territory in both Iraq and Syria. Earlier this month the Pentagon said it killed Omar al-Shishani, described as the Islamic State’s “minister of war,” in an airstrike in Syria. In November, the Pentagon said an airstrike in Libya killed Abu Nabil, another top IS leader.

Security privileges, lapses helped flight attendant escape

Police to review confrontation involving 5 officers and a mailman The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – The New York Police Department said it will review an incident in which four plainclothes officers and a lieutenant handcuffed a postal worker who was out driving his mail truck.

The March 17 confrontation involving postal worker Glenn Grays was captured on cellphone videos that have been widely shared. The videos show the officers telling Grays to stop resisting even though he does not appear to be resisting. Grays said at a news conference this week he was delivering mail in Brooklyn when an unmarked police car nearly hit his mail truck. He said he shouted at the driver, and the officers backed the police car up and demanded identification.

Grays told The New York Times that the driver told him, “I have the right

of way because I’m law enforcement.”

Grays ended up handcuffed and placed in the back of the unmarked police car. He was then taken to the local precinct, where he was issued a summons for disorderly conduct, which will require him to appear in court.

Appearing with Grays at the news conference Tuesday, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams expressed outrage over the apparent violation of a federal employee’s civil rights.

“They issued him a summons in hopes of sweeping this under the rug,” said Adams, a Democrat and a former police officer.

Adams added, “It is not a crime for someone to voice outrage after almost being struck by a vehicle.”

The police department said only that the incident was under internal review.

American detained in N.Korea says he’s sorry for spying The ASSOCIATED PRESS SEOUL, South Korea – An American detained in North Korea said he had spied against the country and asked for forgiveness at a media presentation Friday, nine days after a U.S. tourist was sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labor for subversion.

Kim Tong Chol told a news conference in Pyongyang that he had collaborated with and spied for South Korean intelligence authorities in a plot to bring down the North’s leadership and tried to spread religious ideas among North Koreans.

Describing his acts as “shameful and ineffaceable,” Kim said he feels sorry for his crime and appealed to North Korean authorities to show him mercy by forgiving him.

He was born in South Korea and became a naturalized U.S. citizen. In an interview with CNN in January, Kim said he lived in Fairfax, Virginia, before moving in 2011 to Yangji, a city near the Chinese-North Korean border.

He said he commuted daily to Rason, a special economic zone in North Korea, where he was president of a trade and hotel services company. He said in the Pyongyang news conference that he was detained in Rason last October.

North Korean authorities often arrange news conferences for U.S. and other foreign detainees in which they

read statements to acknowledge their wrongdoing and praise the North’s political system. Those detainees have said after their releases that they were coached or coerced on what to say.

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service, the country’s main spy agency, said Kim’s case wasn’t related to the organization in any way and offered no further comment.

On March 16, North Korea’s highest court sentenced Otto Warmbier, a 21-year-old University of Virginia undergraduate, to prison after he confessed he tried to steal a propaganda banner as a trophy for an acquaintance who wanted to hang it in her church.

He tearfully confessed at his news conference to the attempted theft, which would be grounds in North Korea for a subversion charge.

The U.S. government condemned the sentence and accused North Korea of using such American detainees as political pawns.

The North’s actions on the two American detainees came as it faces mounting pressure from the United States, South Korea and their allies following its nuclear weapons test and long-range rocket launch earlier this year. In recent days, North Korea has conducted weapons launches and issued warlike rhetoric in response to South Korean and U.S. military drills that it sees as an invasion rehearsal.

LOS ANGELES – Within hours of ditching 70 pounds of cocaine at a security checkpoint and bolting barefoot out of the main Los Angeles airport, an off-duty flight attendant was flying across the country after clearing security at the same airport, law enforcement officials said Friday.

Marsha Gay Reynolds, 31, did not do anything out of the ordinary to get back on a plane, officials said, describing how she used an airline badge with her real name to board another flight the next morning at one of the nation’s busiest airports.

Communication lapses, bureaucratic protocols and special security privileges afforded airline workers all contributed to Reynolds’ remaining out of the grasp of law enforcement until she surrendered four days later at Kennedy Airport in New York.

“This is a security breakdown.

That could have easily been an explosive device and a terrorist running from the checkpoint. And we wouldn’t have known until it went boom,” said Marshall McClain, president of the union representing LAX airport police officers.

Reynolds’ escape was another embarrassing error for the airport, which sought to enhance security after a gunman opened fire in a terminal in 2013 and killed a Transportation Security Administration agent.

Reynolds was off duty when she arrived March 18 at an LAX checkpoint, wearing jeans and a black suit jacket and carrying her “known crew member” badge, according to an FBI affidavit filed in support of the charge against Reynolds.

When Reynolds was chosen for a random security screening, TSA officers reported that she became nervous and made a phone call in a foreign language before she dropped her bags, kicked off her heels, ran down an upward-moving escalator and out of the airport, the affidavit said.

Airport police soon found 11 packages of cocaine wrapped in green cellophane inside one of the bags Reynolds left behind, the affidavit said.

The drugs had an estimated street value of up to $3 million.

The badges allow airline workers to get through security faster to reduce lines and allow the TSA to focus on travelers they know less about. To obtain the badges, airline workers must submit to a background check that includes fingerprinting.

Crew members do not have to be wearing uniforms or have a boarding pass when using the badges. But they are still subject to random screenings.

The fact that Reynolds was able to fly so soon after her mad dash through the airport did not particularly surprise aviation expert Jeff Price because the system is designed to catch terrorists, not criminals.

Thumbs-up to ABC community plan town hall Thumbs-up: To everyone who came out Thursday to the Egyptian Theater in DeKalb for the town hall meeting on the America’s Best Communities plan.

The people leading the seven projects that are part of the city’s entry in the competition were on hand to talk about the efforts they are spearheading.

The projects include a food hub, new leadership institute, a marketing and branding campaign, a downtown learning center, and other projects designed to create opporutnities and enhance the quality of life of people in DeKalb.

Audience members also offered important opinions, including on the importance of diversity and other opportunities that might be available for enhancing the existing plan.

The city’s entry has a chance to advance even farther in the competition in April, and when it does, organizers say they’ll likely have another such meeting to continue to develop their ideas.

Thumbs-down: To late March snow. Is there anything that dampens the spring spirit more? But cheer up, next week’s forecast calls for warmer temperatures.

Thumbs-down: To laws that allow discrimination. In North Carolina, legislators this week called an emergency session to pass a law that prohibited any local government measures protecting people from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

A law that forbids protecting people from discrimination seems out of place in 2016, as many of North Carolina’s major employers have noted.

Thumbs-up: For growing your own pumpkin for the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival.

I can ice skate in Central Park because Trump got the skating rink fixed after New York City couldn’t.

Couldn’t you ask? Really? How is that possible? New York City government couldn’t fix an ice rink?

Sad, but true. Despite six years of effort and fiddling with 13-million taxpayer dollars, government’s bureaucracy was unable to fix an ice rink. At one point, they left one side of the rink 6 inches lower than the rest. That’s government work for you.

Then, Donald Trump got it done.

And done right. He likes to remind us he makes deals happen. Getting things done in New York often means you butter up whoever needs convincing, or you bully them. Trump’s good at that.

Is that what we want in a president? Maybe. Probably not.

What bothers me about Donald Trump is that most of his pronouncements are little more than magical thinking. Elect me and “I will be the greatest jobs president that God ever created!” “We’re going to have win after win after win! You people are going to get sick and tired of winning!”

This is just nonsense. No president, no matter how competent, can make everything good. It’s time people stop thinking that political leaders are the answer to our problems.

A Trump rally resembles Barack Obama’s “Yes, we can!” speeches from eight years ago. Delirious fans acted as if Obama’s election would fix everything about America that they didn’t like.

It’s why I wrote the book “No, They Can’t! Why Government Fails –

VIEWS John Stossel But Individuals Succeed.” Government can’t fix most things, but free individuals can – and do! Trump fixed the skating rink when government couldn’t.

Free people, acting without government coercion, accomplished almost all the things that have made America great. That’s why Trump really ticks me off when he says, “We’re gonna make America great again!”

His fans love that. But what does it mean? When exactly was America great? When we won World War II? Yes, that was great.

But it wasn’t great that at the time many Japanese-Americans were locked up in internment camps; blacks weren’t always allowed to vote or drink from public fountains; gay people were beaten by police simply for being gay; and women were basically owned by their husbands and not allowed to have credit cards without their husband’s or father’s permission.

Was America great then?

It’s true that by the end of World War II, America had the strongest military and biggest economy in the world. That was great. But we still have the strongest military and economy. “Make America great again” sounds like everything went bad.

Trump is not the only candidate saying that. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders shout, “The rich get richer, the poor and middle class are

getting poorer!”

This is just a lie. The rich got richer, but poor people didn’t get poorer.

They got richer too, just not as much.

Everyone won!

Politicians and the media spread so much false, bad news that for the first time in history, most Americans say that they believe their children will be worse off than they were.

But that’s bunk.

Warren Buffet got this one right when he wrote, “The babies being born in America today are the luckiest crop in history. (They) will live far better than their parents did.”

If they do, it will be because of free markets and global trade – two things most Democrats and Donald Trump want to smother.

“Make America great again!” is a bad slogan. Let’s start a new one: “Get out of our way!” Don’t impose your destructive tariffs, immigration limits, tougher libel laws, endless mandates and property grabs. Just enforce the Constitution. Then, get out of our way.

A better life comes from individuals striving toward their own goals, not from politicians. If our future continues to improve, it will be in spite of politicians like Trump and magical promises.

Although we never completely eliminated the masterminds in Pakistan, Yemen or Somalia, we always discovered enough to eliminate the group that had established roots in the West. I fear what we shall find in the Paris-Brussels network is that the group’s communications were effectively hidden or sufficiently ephemeral to prevent security services from fully mapping the network that lived – post-Paris – to fight another day.

Brussels does not simply represent change in the terrorists, it also portends great change (or future failure) for European security services. Post-Paris, the European Union’s open borders were on life support; post-Brussels, the Schengen Agreement that requires such reliance on European counterparts is all but dead. As terrorists move freely about, a borderless Europe is already challenging, but when combined with bordered European security and intelligence services, the result is tragically predictable. The European Parliament will not give in easily, but a thickening of European borders, the establishment of robust, multilateral information-sharing arrangements and new European intelligence cooperation

will be required to reduce the likelihood of future tragedies.

The United States has a critical role to play in addressing both of these sets of challenges. As the West’s technology center and intelligence leader, we must continue to work closely with our European partners and strengthen key bilateral and multilateral relationships.

Moreover, we must re-learn – and reteach – the painful lessons of the past decade-plus: Effective counterterrorism must balance a forceful mix of offense, defense and engagement with both partners and vulnerable populations. We must redouble our efforts to address the deadly cauldron that Syria has become, recognizing that disrupting networks closer to home is more difficult than it has been in the past. There are no quick fixes on any of these fronts, but there will be no fixes at all if we do not recognize the significant evolution of the terrorism threat and our ability to address it.

Senate Republicans and the nomination of Judge Merrick Garland The refusal by Senate Republicans to consider the nomination of Judge Merrick Garland for the Supreme Court vacancy rightly has prompted indignation, but it is only the most glaring example of unreasonable intransigence by lawmakers who have turned the process of appointing senior federal officials into a political game.

The nominations of many of the 143 people awaiting confirmation for nonjudicial federal jobs are stalled in the Senate as committee heads and the majority leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell, dither and delay. The result is a federal bureaucracy with an ever-growing number of corners subject to paralysis and indecision. It’s clear for Republican lawmakers, carrying out political vendettas and thwarting the president’s prerogatives are more important than having a functioning government.

Take, for instance, the case of Adam Szubin, the Treasury Department lawyer nominated to serve as under secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence. The under secretary is tasked with enforcing American sanctions against North Korea and Iran and cutting off funding for terrorist groups.

Szubin, who has served under Republican and Democratic administrations, waited 325 days for a Senate banking committee vote, which was held March 10. The full Senate has yet to consider his nomination.

The blockage has deprived a critical division at Treasury of a leader who is fully empowered to make decisions and coordinate a unified response to international challenges. Szubin’s experience is not an isolated case. The banking committee has moved forward only one of 19 nominations put before it

since the beginning of 2015.

Meanwhile, the post of secretary of the Army has been vacant since Nov. 1. Eric Fanning, who has had a swift rise at the Department of Defense, was nominated for the job in September. The Armed Services Committee didn’t schedule a hearing for him until January and waited until early March to vote in favor of the nomination.

The full Senate has yet to schedule a confirmation vote. That has left the Army, which has a $140 billion yearly budget and more than one million soldiers, without a civilian leader with the authority to set priorities and address the needs of a force that has been at war since 2001.

At the State Department, Roberta Jacobson, one of the government’s foremost Latin America experts, has been waiting since last summer to be

confirmed as ambassador to Mexico.

The embassy, one of the largest in the world, has been without an ambassador since June. Jacobson, the assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere affairs, had a hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in July. The panel waited until November to approve her nomination, which the full Senate has not yet voted on. There are few diplomatic jobs more crucial than that of the ambassador to Mexico, who has to deal with border security initiatives, the influx of Central American immigrants and counternarcotics efforts. Jacobson is exceptionally qualified to tackle that long list of challenges and opportunities in Washington’s fraught relationship with Mexico, America’s third-largest trading partner.

The shocking news reports were all too familiar: attacks using improvised explosive devices and suicide bombers in a major European capital, leaving scores dead and wounded. Madrid 2004.

London 2005. Paris 2015. And now, Brussels 2016 is added to the grim list of scarred cities. But while the similarities are clear, the attacks in Brussels likely illustrate and portend radical changes in the terrorism and security landscape.

The first seismic shift comes from Brussels’s almost certain link to the November Paris attacks. Although the connection is not yet confirmed, early evidence suggests that the attackers in Brussels were closely linked to, if not an integral part of, the network that planned and executed the Paris events.

Should this turn out to be the case – unlike closely timed copycat attacks of the past, such as that in London in 2005 – Brussels would mark the first time since 9/11 that a terrorist cell in the West survived to launch more than a single attack. And this despite four months of Europe’s most intensive counterterrorism operations of the past

15 years by France, Belgium and other partner nations.

If confirmed, the significance of this network’s ability to survive cannot be underestimated and likely is driven by three factors: volume, sophistication and communications. With respect to volume, the sheer number of potential terrorists, especially ones who have received training thanks to the proximity of the Syrian conflict, is simply overwhelming European security services.

With this volume has also come a level of sophistication – in planning, in staying “below the radar” and in creation of effective improvised explosive devices – that would have allowed this cell to survive the disruption of network safe houses and leadership and still move forward successfully.

Finally, we must examine closely the extent to which widely available and simple-to-use methods of secure electronic communications could have allowed this cell to hide its electronic tracks post-Paris. In the past, once attacks occurred in the West, the United States and our allies were masterful in quickly obtaining and exploiting every bit of digital evidence associated with a plot. As a result, in 15 years no cells were sufficiently clandestine

“The thing we run up against a lot is fear, with regards of the information we’re collecting,” Wilson said. “It’s such a hot topic and there’s negative connotations associated with it. Many times athletes are hesitant to get involved because (a) they don’t want to know and (b) they’re afraid that the information we collect will somehow get back to the coach and effect their playing time and

their starting spot.”

Wilson, who jokes that during his playing days the mentality was to simply “rub some dirt on it,” also said the mentality to simply tough it out in football can also heighten the problem.

“It should be OK for an athlete to say, ‘Coach, I got rocked. I’m not feeling great, I think I’m going to sit out the rest of the game.’ The culture of the game is something we, as researchers, fight against,” he said. “Those are the parts of

the culture that needs to change. As long as you have that pressure, yeah, you’re going to have those guys who don’t want to be pulled out even though they really, really should sit out the rest of the game.

How do you change that? I don’t know.”

The symptoms of a concussion don’t necessarily show right away, Wilson said. He acknowledged that he believes that there will be future rule changes along with the ones that have been made in the past few years to combat the epidemic of concussions.

While concussions are most notably talked about when it comes to football, Wilson said women’s hockey actually has the highest rate of concussions of any sport. He also added that the injury is possible in several sports – including going up for a header in soccer. He has a 2-year-old son and while he said he’s unsure if he will let him play football in high school, he added that if his son was in high school now, he wouldn’t allow him to play.

“We know more than we did,” Wilson said of the concussion research. “Research really picked up in the early 2000s and as of late, in the last decade because of the NFL and all the controversy surrounding the NFL. We know a lot, but there’s still so much we need to learn.”

DeKALB – Matt Wilson can’t help but think about it when he watches his beloved Steelers.

Since 2011, the Northern Illinois researcher has been studying concussions in athletes and he said that what he’s found has changed the way he watches football.

“I’ll be the first one to admit that I’m a huge, huge football fan, but I watch it with some level of trepidation because I know – I have the knowledge of what are these guys doing to themselves,” said Wilson, who played football in high school and grew up in the Pittsburgh area. “You see the big hits on TV and the crowd is cheering. Yeah, it was a good hit, but on the other side you have to think about those hits are potentially – not for everybody but for some – they’re going to add up.

“I still watch the game. I love the teamwork and the camaraderie of it but I don’t look at it the same way I did before I started really getting involved in this research. It changes your perspective of the game.”

Wilson, a hearing scientist in the Northern Illinois Department of Audiology, began his work on concussions while studying at the University of Tennessee. One such study involved getting brain scans of three different groups – one that didn’t play a contact sport, one that played football and suffered a concussion and one that played football and weren’t diagnosed with a concussion.

He said what he found was the amount of head trauma in football left little difference between the group that had a concussion and the one that had not been diagnosed with a concussion.

He also said that his research has found a correlation between football and concussions.

“I’m not alone in that,” said Wilson, 31. “Does it exist? Yes. But I think football has received a lot of the negative press only because that’s where the spotlight is now. You have to remember, it’s a very, very small – particularly the NFL, because they’re a giant machine, everything gets thrown at them – that sample people have been scrutinizing is so small in terms of what it means for the general population.”

Wilson, who earned his PhD from the University of Tennessee, noted that the percentage of concussions or head trauma that comes from athletics is small. He has a long-term study group of about 6 to 8 athletes – including two high school football players and a wrestler – and has done the study with 30 to 50 individuals.

Has football become too dangerous for youth The debate over player safety in the NFL is a never-ending discussion, but it gained some steam this week with the New York Times’ report on the league’s misleading concussion research, in addition to a report by the Mercury News that the NFL is funding the campaigns of some of the lawmakers reviewing that research. The NFL, naturally, fired back a scathing denial of most of the Times’ report, but it didn’t refute the assertion that its data was not comprehensive enough.

It all adds layers to an ongoing debate around the league and with football at all levels: How safe can we make the game?

Nate Atkins: Bad weeks are nothing new to the NFL, but this one really seems to have left a black eye. Unlike when players make headlines driving drunk or hurting women, this one reflects pretty directly on the product the NFL is selling. But it’s also bigger than the professional game because football always has been. I have plenty of feelings on this subject, but I don’t have any kids yet, so I’ll toss this to you first, Arthur: Knowing what you do now about the game of football, do you think you’ll let little Spencer play someday?

Arthur Arkush: Frankly, Nate, I’m not sure it’s a decision I’ll have to make. At the rate the NFL is going, it’s far from a lock to even be around when my nine-month-old is grown up enough to start playing. But even if the NFL survives, which, in my opinion, will soon require players signing

consent forms that eliminate any liability for the league, there’s no way Spencer will play. Sports, and the NFL specifically, are mine and my family’s livelihood, yet even I can see the positives of playing football simply aren’t worth endangering Spencer’s short- and long-term health. I guess the lone exception could be if he fancies being a placekicker. Am I rushing to judgement as a new parent? You’re not a Dad yet, but you’re obviously deeply connected to the sport. Where do you stand?

Atkins: You’re definitely not in the wrong; I don’t think any parent or future parent on either side of this debate can be right now. I’ve long believed that we’d reach a point with the game where we have all the fresh data we can gather and we’ve made it as safe as we can without fundamentally changing the game to where it’ll simply be a choice for people to play or not to play. This is a personal subject for me because I grew up on football, playing it for six years, and then I sat out my final year of it because of, you guessed it, concussions.

It’s kind of a long and boring story, but my head trauma stemmed mostly from

when I was hit by a car and suffered some minor brain damage as a child, before I played football. Maybe then I shouldn’t have played in the first place, but I’m really glad I did because the sport has given me a career path and a livelihood, and I’ve since gotten to see those stories play out in doing what we do. Take Hasan Muhammad-Rogers, the former Richards (Ill.) all-state quarterback who survived a drive-by shooting because of his strong abs and then used football as a vehicle out of a dangerous area and toward a full-ride college scholarship.

Or you could take Joliet Catholic in Illinois, which teaches a game built on hard work where 11 individuals perform 11 different tasks and then sends many of them out into the steel mill or the police force or the army, where the concepts and adrenaline rush draw largely from what you learned through a sport. In my fear of sounding too much like a meathead, give me some reality: Will I be a bad parent if I encourage my future kids to play a potentially dangerous game just because it made such an impression on me?

Arkush: Call it a copout, but I agree with your first point that it’s simply a personal preference. My preference – actually, my No. 1 priority as a parent – is keeping Spencer safe at all costs. Of course, the opportunity cost is he could miss out on some of the unique lessons football can teach, like the ones the Joliet Catholic players and so many other high school football players around the country benefit from. It’s also my responsibility to find other outlets for

Spencer to have those same enriching experiences, which I think can be sufficiently replicated by participating in safer team sports or other activities. It’s very different, of course, but this matter is also deeply personal for me because my grandpa, father and uncle spent their lives dedicating themselves to covering the game, and I have had the opportunity to do the same. I have such an intense passion for the sport, but I believe it’s already fundamentally different from the one they covered decades ago and I’m afraid further attempts to make an inherently violent game safer will only continue doing so. Is there more that can be done to keep players safer and potentially sway the opinions of parents like me?

Atkins: The NFL could start presenting information honestly, for a change. I think the biggest advancements are going to take place at the lower levels of football, where kids are most at risk with small frames and even smaller attention spans. “Heads-up Tackling” has made some waves, but it’s more the mentality of safety first that needs to be a central part of coaching. Budget issues are going to make that hit-or-miss the lower you go; it’s one of many reasons I’m not in favor of kids playing football before middle school. But at the highest level, is there something the NFL can say that would make people feel safer about chasing that dream?

Arkush: What a novel concept. I admire your optimism, Nate, but when it comes to the NFL saying and doing the right things, that’s another leap I won’t make.

CHICAGO – Deonte Burton insisted the final game of the season was not the end for Iowa State. Even so, this was a painful way to bow out of the NCAA Tournament.

Anthony Gill finished with a season-high 23 points, Mike Tobey came off the bench to score 18, and top-seeded Virginia beat the Cyclones 84-71 in the Midwest Region semifinals on Friday night.

“I’m pretty confident we’ll be back in this position,” Burton said.

If they are, they had better start on a stronger note.

The fourth-seeded Cyclones (23-12) just about got blown off the court in the early going and could not make up for it in the second half, so Virginia (29-7) advanced to its first regional final since 1995.

The Northern Illinois softball team jumped out to a big lead early and cruised to an 8-0 victory at Bowling Green in five innings in the Mid-American Conference opener on Friday.

The Huskies (20-7 overall, 1-0 in MAC West) scored four runs in the first inning and four more in the fourth.

“The hitters came in with a game plan and they stuck to it,” Northern Illinois coach Christina Sutcliffe said. “They were able and got on the starting pitcher really early.”

Kayti Grable went 3 for 3 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs for the Huskies and pitcher Alex Frenz threw a three-hit shutout with two strikeouts.

Prevent recurrent back pain Dear Dr K: I get back pain every so often. It can last a week and interferes with my life. Can exercises prevent more attacks in the future?

Dear reader: Absolutely yes – if you do them regularly. Exercise is a great way to prevent repeat episodes of low back pain.

The right exercise program will help you build strong, flexible muscles that will be less prone to injury.

There are a lot of people like you who suffer from recurrent back pain. About 80 percent of U.S. adults report having experienced at least one bad episode of back pain. One of the reasons back pain is so common may be we’re out of shape.

What do I mean? Until about a century ago, most human beings were physically active most of the day.

The great majority of U.S. citizens lived (and worked) on farms, and that involved a lot of walking and lifting. You may think of lifting as mainly involving the arms, but lifting something heavy involves using the back, abdominal and leg muscles as well.

Our muscles were built to support a life of frequent physical activity – particularly a lot of walking and lifting. But that’s a life few of us have today, so our muscles tend to get weak and stiff.

Weak muscles – particularly weak back and abdominal muscles – cause or worsen many cases of low back pain.

Stretching and strengthening both your back and abdominal muscles can help prevent a recurrence of the problem.

The best exercises are those that strengthen and stretch the muscles that support your spine. Strong abdominal or flexor muscles help people maintain an upright posture. So do strong extensor muscles, which run up and down the full length of the back. They help keep the

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff vertebrae, the bones of your spine, straight. In addition, two long muscles that run from the lower vertebrae to the hips and the buttock muscles help support the back during walking, standing and sitting.

Stretching equally is important for a person plagued by back problems. Supple, well-stretched muscles are less prone to injury. Stretch regularly, but gently.

Don’t bounce, as that can cause injury.

Beginners should start by holding the stretch for five seconds or so, and then gradually build up to roughly 30-second stretches over time.

In addition to exercises that increase the strength and flexibility of your lower back, you should engage in regular aerobic exercise. It has many benefits for general health and also helps prevent back pain. Choose activities that are low in risk and high in benefit for your back.

Swimming, walking and bicycling lead the list.

Talk to your doctor about working with a physical therapist. A therapist can help design a safe and effective exercise program for you.

Once you’ve got that program established, do it regularly. That statement may seem obvious, but I’ve had some patients who seem to think a week of exercises can prevent future back pain forever. If only that were so.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY have been dating my boyfriend for Jeanne two years. He is Phillips applying to graduate school, while I am applying to medical school. He’s wonderful, and we talk often about marriage and our future.

Both of us have student loan debt, which we aggressively are working to pay down, pulling long hours at work.

My problem is he thinks nothing of planning weeks-long, extravagant vacations for us. I make twice what he does, but I prefer saving for the obvious debt in my future and taking shorter, less-expensive vacations. He relies on his “strategic financial planning” to compensate for his “I want it all, and I want it now” personality.

When I express my hesitancy to go on these long trips based on my personal finances, he offers to pay for everything, which makes me feel like a cheapskate, since I technically could pay for us both easily. Am I unreasonable in saying I’m uncomfortable with either of us spending thousands of dollars that would be better spent setting up our future together? – Vacation

In today’s deal, look at the North hand. South opens one spade, North raises to two spades, and South rebids three clubs. What should North do now?

South’s three-club bid is a helpsuit game-try, asking North to look in particular at his black suits. With few points there, North signs off in three spades; but with good holdings, he typically jumps to four spades. However, with a magic hand like this one, he tells partner about the double fit by raising to four clubs.

Now analyze the deal. How does South get on with (a) spades or (b) clubs as trumps?

In spades, South has only 11 tricks: five spades, one diamond and five clubs. Declarer must lose either two diamonds or one trick in each red suit.

In clubs, though, there are 12 winners: five spades, one diamond, five clubs, and one heart ruff in South, the shorter trump hand. Two diamond losers disappear from North on South’s fourth and fifth spades.

When North raises three clubs to four clubs, South, placing his partner with the spade queen and club acequeen, should go for the maximum by jumping to six clubs.
