The only time Clinton broke through the clutter was when she talked about Trump, a situation that wasn’t lost on Democrats who noted his ability to stay on the offensive throughout the GOP primaries. But party strategists and Clinton aides believe that calculus will change in the general election, pointing to Trump’s high negative ratings.

Democrats have already begun stockpiling potential ammunition about the billionaire and are planning a coordinated effort to undercut his appeal.

Early efforts spilled out into the public this week when a Democratic group backing Clinton blasted out footage of Trump refusing to name his foreign policy advisers and instead cited his own “very good brain.”

Over a period of 72 hours earlier in the month, the Republican front-runner faced a campaign crisis after unrest at his events forced him to cancel a rally in Chicago. He responded, not by apologizing but by justifying his supporters’ violent reactions to protesters at his events and offering to pay legal fees.

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton spent much of the same period cleaning up misstatements about former first lady Nancy Reagan’s role in addressing the AIDS epidemic, whether her policies would kill coal-mining jobs and her husband’s 1993 health care plan.

“Trump’s ‘gaffes’ haven’t hurt him because a certain segment of GOP primary voters actually support the things he is saying and the way he is saying them,” said Dan Pfeiffer, a former Obama adviser.

Mike DuHaime, a Republican strategist and former adviser to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s presidential campaign, says that the image Trump projects as a political outsider has superseded the controversy that surrounds him. Christie has endorsed Trump.

Trump canceled a scheduled event on March 11 at the University of Illinois at Chicago, one of the country’s most diverse campuses, despite a flood of incensed responses.

Peace United Church of Christ held final service

By BRITTANY KEEPERMAN bkeeperman@shawmedia.com GENOA – Most Sundays for 78 years, Iness Coon has been at Peace United Church of Christ in Genoa, and Sunday was no different as she came to say goodbye.

Peace United Church of Christ disbanded with a final service and deconsecration ritual to finalize the close. The church has stood in Genoa for more than 100 years and held its first service March 27, 1909.

Coon said she grew up hearing stories about her grandfather helping build the church at 301 E. First St. in Genoa.

Some of her fondest memories of the church involved community activities, such as the regular rummage and bake sales, as well as Kathy Lawes the annual hot Associate conference chocolate table minister in the Prairie the church would set up at Genoa’s and Western downtown winter Associations festival – a tradition that continued as recently as this past winter.

“We also used to have a garden out back,” she said, recalling back a few decades. “They would take the vegetables into Bensonville, to a home for the elderly.”

John Omerod and Kathy Lawes performed the last service Sunday.

In the United Church of Christ denomination, a ritual of official desecration is required when a congregation disbands.

“It is an emotional experience,” said Lawes, associate conference minister in the Prairie and Western Associations of the church.

“It’s like a death in the family. My heart really goes out to the members here.”

Royal Children’s Ball benefits youth service bureau

Event included dancing, Royal Raffle, live DJ, magic show, balloon animals

By EMILY DELEGATTO news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Three-year-old London Moore couldn’t keep her eyes off “Frozen’s” Princess Anna at the sixth annual Royal Children’s Ball on Friday.

Dragging her mother Jalaine Hart by the hand, she followed the princess until she could get a hug from her.

“I found a lot of princesses here at the castle,” Moore said. “Anna and Elsa are my favorite.”

Held at Northern Illinois University’s Altgeld castle, the event is the DeKalb County Youth Service Bureau’s biggest annual fundraiser.

The royal evening included dancing, a live DJ, photography studio, regal salon, balloon animals, a magic show, face painting and crafts.

Claire Maschinski, associate director of the DeKalb County Youth Service Bureau, said 330 tickets were

Carrie Aldrich DeKalb resident sold in advance, and they expected to sell about the same amount at the door.

All the proceeds will benefit the nonprofit organization, which includes funding for various therapeutic programs.

Maschinski said the agency hasn’t raised the price from $15 a ticket since the first event six years ago.

“We try to keep it a fun, family-centered event at a low cost,” she said. “As soon as you get in the door,

everything else is free. There’s not a lot of low-cost events to do with this much fun involved.”

This was the first year David Harned brought his kids Lily, 7, and Parker, 4, of DeKalb to the royal event.

“I love this because it’s different and easy for the kids to run around and have fun,” he said.

In addition to dressing up for the ball, Lily’s favorite part was the magic show.

“The magician was kind of silly and kind of awesome,” she said. “He did card tricks and this cool thing with a rope.”

Parker said his favorite part of the evening was the balloon animals, as he danced around the room with his balloon sword.

It was DeKalb resident Carrie Aldrich’s fourth year bringing her daughter, Kaitlynn, to the event.

Dressed up like a princess in a purple dress complete with crown and magic wand, 6-year-old Kaitlynn said she loves to dress up and feel like a princess.

“I like to go to the salon and meet Anna and Elsa,” she said.

“This is a great event for kids, and it’s a bonus being able to support the community at the same time,” Aldrich said.

Maschinski said in addition to seeing all the kids dressed up and the dancing, her favorite part of the evening was the raffle.

“We spend so much time asking for donations,” she said. “We have such a wonderful, generous community.”

The Royal Raffle included 28 gift basket with items ranging from tickets to sporting events, sports memorabilia and gift certificates to local businesses.

It’s important to go through the proper closing ceremonies, Lawes said.

“Deconsecrating the building is basically saying it’s no longer a church building in our denomination,” she said.

“It’s important to do that because if the building is ultimately sold to a developer or turned into a restaurant or something ... it’s not sacred ground anymore.”

The congregation had dwindled in size over the years and only about eight core members remained, said Les Becker, who has been coming to the church for 37 years.

“It’s been a long, rough road for us,” Becker said. “We couldn’t keep sustaining things with just a few

HELEN E. KRONE Born: Oct. 27, 1936 Died: March 19, 2016

Helen E. Krone, 79, of Sterling, died Saturday morning, March 19, 2016, at Walnut Manor.

Helen was born October 27, 1936, in Sterling, the daughter of Jack and Elizabeth (Lease) Gartner.

She was a 1954 graduate of Community High School (Newman Central Catholic High School) and a 1992 graduate of Sauk Valley Community College. She married Weston Krone.

Helen attained her real estate license, enjoyed bowling and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sterling.

Surviving are her children, Gary (Carla) Krone of Pleasant Prairie, WI, Brian (Pam) Krone of Sterling, Brenda (Patrick) McDowell of Naperville and Linda Krone (Sue Hansfield) of Cortland; her brothers, Dave Gartner of Madison, WI and Peter (Nancy) Gartner of Princeton; a sister, Mary Henry of AZ; and 4 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Charles Gartner.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls.

Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sterling with Reverend Bruce Ludeke, celebrant, officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park.

A memorial has been established to Newman Central Catholic High School or Sacred Heart Catholic Church in her memory.

EVA MARIE LEONARD Born: June 14, 1922 Died: March 17, 2016

Eva Marie Leonard, 93, of DeKalb, Illinois, died March 17, 2016, of congestive heart failure in Oak Crest, DeKalb Area Retirement Center.

She was born in New York City on June 14, 1922, the daughter of Ludwig and Maria

Antonia (Bergmann) Bendix.

She grew up in Rye, New York, and after graduating in 1944 from Radcliffe College she earned a Master’s degree in Secondary Education and Social Studies at New York University.

She taught at various schools in New York and New Jersey. In the summer of 1949 she participated in a trip to study economic and political developments in post-war Europe.

In 1950 she returned to Radcliffe for graduate work in medieval history, earning a Master’s degree in 1951.

In 1953 she met Henry S. Leonard, Jr., a graduate student of mathematics, and they were married September 4, 1954. They lived in Somerville, Massachusetts, until Summer 1958 while Henry completed his Ph.D. in Mathematics at Harvard. During that time Eva served with the Somerville League of Women Voters on the Know Your Town project, and was elected President of the Somerville League.

Eva and Henry moved to Pittsburgh in Fall 1958 where Henry had a position in the Mathematics Department at Carnegie-Mellon University.

Eva was active in the organization for faculty wives.

Their son Alan was born in 1964, and Eva’s widowed mother came to live with them. In 1968, while on sabbatical at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, Henry accepted an appointment to the Mathematics Department of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

In 1987-88 Eva and Henry spent a sabbatical year at UMIST, Manchester, England, and lived in the “Borough” of Heaton Chapel just south of Manchester. Eva greatly enjoyed this community.

In DeKalb Eva still belonged to the League of Women Voters, but she was more active in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. She was President of the Episcopal Church Women, taught Sunday School, and edited the Church newsletter.

She enjoyed following local government and reading about old houses and about education at all levels.

She loved gardening, cooking, genealogy and travel.

Her Radcliffe education encouraged her curiosity, wide interests, and the ability to identify the kernel of any discussion, and enriched her relationships with her family, friends, and organizations.

Above all Eva had the gift of joy.

Eva is survived by her husband, Henry; her son, H. Alan (Brenda) Leonard and of Boiling Springs, SC; her grandson, Tim Leonard of Koblenz, Germany; her nephew, Matthew (Josie) Bendix of Port Washington, NY; and her niece, Margo (Steven) Batha of Los Alamos, NM. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her brother, Ernst L. Bendix of Staten Island, NY. There will be a Memorial Service for Eva at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 900 Normal

Road, DeKalb, IL on April 8.

There will be a visitation at 10 a.m., service at 11 a.m., and luncheon at noon, all at the church. Committal and burial will be at 1:30 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery in DeKalb.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Eva Marie Leonard Memorial Fund at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

The story of him putting the television set out on the curb so that his children would read instead of watch cartoons is a family legend.

Alfred was a wonderful example of what was truly important in life- faith, family and ALFRED E. MUELLER friends.

(Karen) Mueller (DeKalb, IL), Stephen (Deborah) Mueller (a degenerative brain disorder).

DeKALB – Fire department officials are holding a communitywide contest to name their new ladder truck and have selected three options for the public to vote on.

The department bought the replacement ladder truck for $420,000 last year.

Northern Illinois University contributed $275,000 as part of its fire service agreement with the city.

Fire officials have been training on the new ride, and it will hit the streets around the beginning of May, after the name is revealed.

“Fire departments throughout the county do these sorts of things,” said Pat Erikson, DeKalb firefighter/ paramedic and public relations coordinator. “We wanted to continue that tradition in DeKalb. … We wanted to make the community as much a part of the tradition as we are.”

The three concepts the department have chosen are “ ‘RIP’ Roaring,” “Spirit of DeKalb” and “The Baron.”

The first concept is dedicated to former Fire Chief Albert “RIP” Rippii.

Ripii grew up in DeKalb and played football with Northern Illinois University.

He later went on to serve in World War II and also played football with the Aurora Clippers and Green Bay Packers.

Former Otto’s building, deemed ‘unfit for occupancy,’ listed for $585K

By BRETT ROWLAND browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A 24,000-square-foot commercial building in downtown DeKalb that city officials have said is virtually worthless has been listed for sale for more than a half million dollars.

The building at the corner of Lincoln Highway and First Street, which was previously home to Otto’s Nightclub among other businesses, is for sale for $585,465.

The property listing describes the building, which has been deemed unfit for occupancy for more than two years, as “majestic.” It notes the great location with prime visibility and says “ownership is very motivated.” The listing agent couldn’t be reached for comment Friday.

Pat Looney, the building’s owner, could not be reached for comment Friday.

The listing doesn’t mention a host of problems with the building. In fact, an appraisal done in 2015 at the request of the city of DeKalb found the building was in “poor condition.”

“It should be noted the value of the underlying site is $200,000, which is less than the cost to demolish the building, which again is near $410,000,” according to an appraiser’s report submitted to the city of DeKalb in November 2015. “Nevertheless, it is my opinion the highest and best use is to demolish the existing structure.”

The appraisal was obtained by the Daily Chronicle through a Freedom of Information Act request.

DeKalb Mayor John Rey said the City Council isn’t considering buying the property, but is watching what happens to it.

“We’d like to see something done with it,” Rey said. “Something other than sitting and deteriorating.”

SYCAMORE – The City Council on Monday will consider a pilot program to allow sidewalk cafés and outdoor liquor sales.

Last year, council members considered a request that Taxco Restaurant Too, 223 W. State St., Sycamore, be allowed to provide outdoor food and liquor sales on the public sidewalk in front of the restaurant, city documents show.

Until now, the only obstacle has been determining whether the state would allow the city to build along Route 64.

The Illinois Department of Transportation, however, sent a letter in the fall confirming that all property beyond the outside edges of the traffic lanes on Route 64 is in the city’s jurisdiction, and the council may move forward with its plan.

An outdoor seating area would cost businesses a $200 application fee and an annual use fee of $50 to $100 depending on the café’s square footage.

The business also must leave at least a 4-foot-wide walking space for pedestrians, with no parking meters, trees, streetlights and signs in the way, city documents show.

On Monday, the council will review additional provisions for the pilot program, which would run May 1 through Oct. 16, and experiment with outdoor service at Taxco, Sycamore

Rep. wants to legalize midwives statewide

SPRINGFIELD – Mishra Keller skirted a state law when she chose to deliver her second child at home with the help of a midwife, given that the trained birthing professionals have been barred from practicing since 1987 in Illinois.

Keller, a holistic health coach in Evanston, disagrees with the state’s stance, saying that midwives are a “good resource.” “With the right training, they can help people have positive outcomes,” Keller said.

State Rep. Robyn Gabel agrees, and is making her second attempt in a year to get the Home Birth Safety Act to the House floor – and hopefully into law.

The act would issue licenses to midwives for the first time since 1963 and legalize the practice, which she said is needed to give women more delivery options. But its passage is uncertain in the General Assembly, and the proposal still is staunchly opposed by doctors, who say there are possible risks to mothers and babies that could arise during at-home births.

A spokeswoman for Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner said he would review the plan if it reached his desk.

Park Forest police post update on wounded officer

PARK FOREST – The Park Forest Police Department has posted a Facebook update on one of its officers who was critically injured in a shooting Saturday.

WLS-TV in Chicago reported Officer Tim Jones was shot three times in the jaw and neck Saturday morning and is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Jones, who has been on the force less than a year, was investigating a break-in when he was shot. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man accused of shooting Jones as 21-year-old Thurman Reynolds of Park Forest, who was killed when officers returned fire.

Off-duty officer shoots man, says he was hit with bat

CHICAGO – An off-duty Chicago police officer shot and wounded a man who authorities said struck the officer with a baseball bat.

The police department said in a news release that a 37-year-old officer was walking about 10:30 p.m. Saturday in a West Side neighborhood when he saw an “aggressive male subject” holding his waistband. The release said the officer began a patdown, and the person “called out to family members.”

A 32-year-old man came out of a house with a bat and hit the officer “multiple times in the upper body” before the officer fired at him. The man underwent surgery at a hospital.

The officer had injuries that were not life-threatening and has been placed on

Man charged in death of 1-year-old stepson

CALUMET CITY– A Calumet City man has been charged with murder after his 1-year-old stepson died from burns allegedly caused by scalding hot bathwater.

Calumet City Police Chief Tom DiFiori told WMAQ-TV in Chicago that 30-year-old Gregory Miles was charged with first-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter and endangering the life of a child.

Police responded about 12:30 a.m.

Dollar store robbery in Springfield 5th in a month

SPRINGFIELD – A man who implied he had a gun robbed a dollar store in Springfield on Sunday – the fifth discount store robbed in a month.

Springfield police told the (Springfield) State Journal-Register the man walked into a Family Dollar Store at 9:53 a.m. and demanded money.

He suggested he was armed although the clerk did not see a gun. The man took an undisclosed amount of money and escaped on foot.

Police said they are investigating the likelihood that the robber is the same one who has robbed four other dollar stores in recent weeks. In the last two incidents, no weapon was displayed.

The first incident was Feb. 23. On that date and on Feb. 25, a robber entered separate Dollar General stores and displayed weapons.

President arrives in Cuba for ‘historic visit’ The ASSOCIATED PRESS HAVANA – Stepping into history, President Barack Obama opened an extraordinary visit to Cuba on Sunday, eager to push decades of acrimony deeper into the past and forge irreversible ties with America’s former adversary.

“This is a historic visit and a historic opportunity,” Obama said as he greeted staff of the new U.S. Embassy in Havana.

Air Force One touched down on a rainy, overcast day in the Cuban capital. The president was joined by wife Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha.

Obama was greeted by top Cuban officials – but not President Raul Castro. The Cuban leader frequently greets major world figures upon their arrival at Jose Marti International Airport, but was absent on the tarmac. Instead, he planned to greet Obama on Monday at the Palace of the Revolution.

Obama’s whirlwind trip is a crowning moment in his and Castro’s ambitious effort to restore normal relations between their countries. While deep differences persist, the economic and political relationship has changed rapidly in the 15 months since the leaders vowed a new beginning.

After greeting embassy staff, Obama and his family toured Old Havana by foot, despite a heavy downpour. They walked gingerly on the slippery wet stones in the square in front of the Havana Cathedral. A few hundred people gathered in the square erupted in applause and shouted Obama’s name as the first family stepped forward.

The Obamas then dined at a privately owned restaurant in a bustling, working class neighborhood. Jubilant crowds surged toward the president’s heavily fortified motorcade as it inched through the San Cristobal restaurant.

For more than 50 years, Cuba was an unimaginable destination for a U.S. president, as well as most American citizens. The U.S. severed diplomatic relations with Cuba in 1961 after Fidel Castro’s revolution sparked fears of communism spreading to the Western Hemisphere. Domestic politics in both countries contributed to the continued estrangement well after the Cold War ended.

“He wanted to come to Cuba with all his heart,” 79-year-old Odilia Collazo said in Spanish as she watched Obama’s arrival live on state TV. “Let God will that this is good for all Cubans. It seems to me that Obama wants to do something good before he leaves.”

Ahead of Obama’s arrival, counter-protesters and police broke up an anti-government demonstration by the Ladies in White group, whose members were taken into custody by female police officers in a scene that plays out in Havana each Sunday. They’re typically detained briefly and then released.

Obama’s visit was highly anticipated in Cuba, where workers furiously cleaned up the streets in Old Havana and gave buildings a fresh coat of paint ahead of his arrival. American flags were raised alongside the Cuban colors in parts of the capital, an improbable image for those who have lived through a half-century of bitterness between the two countries.

A mysterious death in D.C. The death in November in Washington of Mikhail Lesin, a prominent Russian businessman who long survived in the halls of power in Moscow, has left many questions.

Lesin was found dead in his room at the Dupont Circle Hotel, after which family members told the Russian news media he died of a fatal heart attack.

Now, four months later, the D.C. Medical Examiner’s Office reports that Lesin died of blunt force trauma to the head and had bruises on other areas of his body.

Lesin matured in the twilight of the Soviet Union and was among those who proved fleet-footed enough to capitalize on the opportunities created by the birth of capitalism in the new Russia.

Some seized natural resources, others grabbed giant factories. Lesin’s gamble was on TV advertising. When the stolid broadcasters of the Soviet era were replaced by a snazzy independent television news channel, NTV, founded by the oligarch Vladimir Gusinsky, Lesin’s agency became the exclusive broker for advertising.

He made a fortune, navigating business and the corridors of political power. Lesin’s agency worked to re-elect the ailing president, Boris Yeltsin, in 1996.

One time, it spliced a taped video message by Yeltsin right before the final vote to conceal the fact the president had just suffered a heart attack.

When President Vladimir Putin rose to power a few years later, Lesin helped him take control of Russian television and force Gusinsky out.

Lesin became Russian press minister, played a major role in Putin’s drive to subjugate the news media, and helped establish Russia Today, a propaganda network. Lesin surely knew a lot about the obscure workings of Putin’s Kremlin.

In late 2014, Lesin stepped down from a position at the media conglomerate Gazprom-Media, but did not seem headed for Kremlin ostracism.

We don’t know why someone would have assaulted Lesin, if that’s what happened. But it can’t be forgotten that others who have found themselves on the outs with Putin have met with violence.

Alexander Litvinenko, a former officer of the Federal Security Service, was murdered in London with radioactive polonium. The journalist Anna Politkovskaya was murdered in her apartment elevator.

Business owners and others have fled Moscow out of fear.

Why was Lesin in Washington? What meetings did he hold or plan? Why was the fact of the “blunt force trauma” kept quiet for so long? Law enforcement authorities should rule out foul play or thoroughly investigate it, and tell the public what they find.

He’s smart enough to know the political calculus: Obama picked him to force Republicans to defend their indefensible position.

Already, conservative groups are gearing up to spend millions to make sure no weak-kneed Republicans fall out of lockstep with the marching orders from on high. (If you’re sick of seeing millions spent secretly to dominate the political process, by the way, you should pay attention to the Supreme Court. The Citizens United case, which allows corporations to spend freely on elections, was brought to you by a high court dominated by conservatives.)

If nothing else, this ought to bring to an end to the attempts by some Washington observers to pin the blame for the reckless partisanship that threatens to swamp the ship of state equally on Democrats and Republicans, on Obama and his GOP antagonists.

It ought to be clear by now that the GOP’s one remaining principle is to oppose Obama at every turn – and utterly without shame.

Stop blaming Trump supporters for violence at campaigns

By MARC A. THIESSEN The Washington Post In recent days, Donald Trump supporters have been demonized as some sort of racist mob spun up by Trump’s racially tinged rhetoric.

Former Environmental Protection Agency head and New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman declared: “If you were told that Mexicans are rapists and criminals ... and you are walking down the street and see them in your community, people are going to do things.”

Except for one problem: Trump supporters are not targeting Mexicans walking down the street with violence.

They are not even showing up and disrupting Bernie Sanders when he spews socialist claptrap.

The clashes we have seen so far have almost exclusively been at Trump events.

Why is that? Because organized groups of left-wing agitators intentionally come to Trump rallies to provoke his supporters. According to the New York Times, the protesters “fling themselves to the ground, forcing law enforcement officers – often outmanned and overwhelmed – to drag them away. They also shout and curse,

making obscene gestures.”

They should not be surprised when they get a reaction. Walk into a blue-collar bar and start taunting people that way, and you are likely to leave without some of your teeth.

What we are witnessing is the latest example of the American left’s totalitarian instinct to shut down speech that it finds abhorrent. Trump is not the only speaker to be driven off a college campus in recent years.

In 2013, student protesters forced Ben Carson to cancel his planned commencement speech at Johns Hopkins University. In 2014, student activists forced Brandeis University to cancel a commencement-day speech by author and activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Also in 2014, protesters forced former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to cancel her commencement speech at Rutgers University, declaring that “war criminals shouldn’t be honored” by the school.

What do these speakers all have in common? They are a) black and b) conservative. If the Trump protests were about race, then why are left-wing activists equally insistent on stopping black speakers with views they don’t like? Rice didn’t call for a Muslim ban, but she is just as unacceptable to the

radical left as Trump.

This is not to suggest that Trump is blameless in the ugliness that is unfolding. Far from it. A responsible leader tries to calm a volatile situation. Trump has been doing the opposite for months – egging on his supporters to clash with the protesters. In August, Trump warned that if protesters tried to disrupt his rallies, “I don’t know if I’ll do the fighting myself, or if other people will.” In November, he said a protester who disrupted one of his events “should have been roughed up,” and in February, he declared of another, “I’d like to punch him in the face.” Also in February, he told a rally, “If you see somebody getting ready to throw a tomato, knock the crap out of them. ... I promise you, I will pay for the legal fees.”

That is highly irresponsible. But Trump understands that it is also why his supporters love him. Unlike Sen. Bernie Sanders, who let Black Lives Matter protesters take away his microphone, Trump does not back down when people try to stop him from speaking.

His supporters see a man who stands up for himself and believe he won’t let the U.S. be pushed around, either.

The vast majority of his supporters are not violent or bigots. One reporter covering his campaign described them as “almost unfailingly courteous.”

They are ordinary people who see their jobs, their country, their ability to earn a fair wage and support their families slipping away – and feel abandoned by their party’s establishment. They are desperate for a savior and think they have found one in Trump. When they hear Republican presidential candidates and pundits blame them for the violence, they are alienated even more.

Yes, Trump’s call for a Muslim ban, his spewing of conspiracies theories about 9/11 and Iraq, his embrace of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Middle East dictators, and his calls for protesters to be “roughed up” are all repulsive. But for many Americans, the left’s smash-mouth tactics are repulsive as well.

Trump understands this, which is why he is milking the protests to his advantage. He is using them to rally blue-collar America by saying we’re not going to take this anymore – we are not going to bow to the Alinskyite tactics of the radical left.

And the protesters are playing right into his hands.

Allow me to make a prediction: None of that matters. McConnell still will refuse to hold hearings on Garland’s nomination, no matter how much his party’s hypocrisy is held up to public view. According to a recent Washington Post-ABC News poll, 63 percent of Americans believe the Senate should at least hold hearings on Obama’s nominee.

So what? Garland and Obama had barely left the Rose Garden, where the announcement was held, when McConnell reiterated his pledge to stonewall.

“The next justice could fundamentally alter the direction of the Supreme Court and have a profound impact on our country,” he said, “so of course the American people should have a say in the court’s direction.”

I have news for the Senate major-

ity leader. The American people had their say in 2012, when they re-elected Obama with 51 percent of the vote, 5 million more votes than Mitt Romney received. And Obama still is the president.

Count me among those who wish that Obama had nominated a black woman, a first for the nation’s highest court. Not only would GOP obstruction in the face of a highly qualified black female jurist have likely motivated an enthusiastic turnout among Democratic voters in the fall, but it also would be an important symbol in a diverse country. Black women are a crucial part of the progressive coalition, and there are plenty among that cohort who would be excellent choices, including Attorney General Loretta Lynch and U.S. District Court Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.

Of course, such a nominee would likely have given up any chance to actually serve on the Supreme Court, since Republicans would have taken the next several months to mount a smear campaign against her. That would have made her toxic, even if Obama’s successor is a Democrat.

The same applies to Garland, who has agreed to take one for the team.

Apparently, President Barack Obama still believes congressional Republicans can be shamed. Apparently, he thinks he can persuade GOP senators to consider his Supreme Court nominee with an implicit threat to expose them as hypocrites, obstructionists and revanchists if they refuse.

Has Obama learned nothing over the past eight years? The GOP Congress is shameless.

Although Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made it clear within hours of the death of Justice Antonin Scalia that he would refuse to consider – no hearings, much less a vote – any nominee Obama proposes, the president went ahead and performed the duties assigned to him by the U.S. Constitution: He selected a worthy nominee to fill the vacancy.

And not just a worthy nominee, but also one whose credentials, in a rational political world, would draw broad bipartisan support. That nominee is Judge Merrick Garland.

Chosen for a seat on the D.C. Court of Appeals by President Bill Clinton, Garland is a centrist who is highly regarded throughout Washington. He’s a former prosecutor; as a Justice Department lawyer, he oversaw the trial team

The Northern Illinois University College of Education’s Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education will address these issues in a panel discussion titled “Concussion and Youth Sport” on Tuesday.

Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb is asking people to remove all grave decorations as part of its spring cleanup.

Officials from the cemetery at 1600 S. First St. in DeKalb will remove and discard all decorations if people do not do so by March 31, according to a news release.

Graves may begin being decorated again starting April 8.

Human rights commission to meet

Experienced Barbs look for strong campaign

DEKALB – Looking to improve upon last season’s record, DeKalb boys tennis coach Brad Bjelk and his players have set the bar high for themselves in 2016.

“We had a doubles team that was really close to qualifying for state last season who are now seniors this year,” Bjelk said. “The seniors last season worked really hard and played a lot of tennis and the seniors this season are continuing that.

This group really wants to be leaders, which is nice.”

That doubles team is made up of seniors Hunter Tiggelaar and Jack Fellabaum. They grew up playing basketball and baseball together. Last season, the duo relied heavily on their athleticism to beat most of their opponents. This season, they know that sheer athletic ability isn’t enough to get them to state.

“Last year was not only our first year as a doubles team, but also, our first year playing tennis,” Fellabaum said. “We played a kind of quirky style that worked for us that was really more about us as athletes.”

The Barbs finished 5-11 last year and 3-4 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference.

“Right now, we’re just working on getting our technique down,” Tiggelaar said. “I feel like if we can do that, we will be able to use both our athletic ability and our fundamentals and be able to dominate this season.

Senior Jorge Trejo is looking to make a run for himself this season as well. Trejo, a member of the team since his freshman year, has a difficult road ahead of him because he is switching from doubles to singles.

His partner ended up moving to Dubai a few weeks before the season started.

“There’s a lot of competition just on our team for the singles spots,” Trejo said. “The switch is tough but I really like it so far. There is a lot more freedom in the singles game vs. the doubles game.”

Bjelk said that Trejo’s transition will be tough but that he can handle the challenge.

“He was one of our more vocal leaders last season. I’m looking forward to him being a leader and coming ready to play every day.”

The Barbs open up their season Tuesday at Harlem High School.

MAPLE PARK – With eight new players, six of whom are freshmen, Kaneland girls soccer coach Scott Parillo is trying to temper expectations for a Knights team that reached the Class 2A DeKalb Supersectional last year.

The Knights have exploded out of the gate this season, winning 3-0 on Saturday against Belvidere North behind two goals from Kiandra Powell.

They opened the season with a 10-0 win against Illinois Math and Science Academy.

“The fact we’ve outscored our opponents 13-0 in the first two games is good,” Parillo said. “It’s important we can keep those clean sheets as much as possible to build the confidence up in these younger girls. It’s a shame we scored 10 in that first game, I think some of them thought the goals would fall in that easy today but that’s not realistic.”

The shots may not have fallen against the Buccaneers (1-1) quite as often, but the Knights (2-0) got enough, including one from Powell on a header just 26 seconds into the second half, pushing the lead to 2-0. Kylie Kurz assisted on the goal.

“That was definitely a key part for the start of the second half,” Powell said. “That just put us in gear to start going and pressure more. It kicked off us good.”

The Knights scored in the 13th minute when Lauren Ortiz fed the ball ahead to Powell, who knocked it past keeper Maria Aguilar – who faced 21 shots on the day.

With 11:23 left in the game, Ortiz picked up another assist, this one to Gabrielle Cano, who fired a one-time past Aguilar.

Parillo said after a Belvidere player left the field early in the second half with a bloody nose after an extended timeout, the flow of the Knights was disrupted and took some time to find again.

“We scored 26 seconds into the second half because we pressure them high, which is what we asked,” Parillo said.

The Knights are back in action Monday at Hampshire, then host Rosary on Wednesday – the same Rosary club that the Knights finally beat in the postseason last year, which led them to claim their first regional title and kickoff the long playoff run.

“I’m hoping no one puts the expectations on these poor girls that they have to accomplish what they did last year,” Parillo said. “That wouldn’t be fair to them, and we certainly don’t.

We just want them to improve every day.”

Powell said she was pleased with the early success of the Knights so far.

“It’s definitely a good start,” Powell said. “We had suck momentum coming from last year and just to see with all the young girls coming in, it’s been a great start.”

Coyle’s shootout goal gives Wild victory

By MATT CARLSON The Associated Press CHICAGO – Charlie Coyle scored the only goal in the shootout to lift the Minnesota Wild to a 3-2 victory over the Blackhawks on Sunday night.

Coyle, Minnesota’s first shooter, beat the Hawks’ Scott Darling a night after he and Zach Parise scored in the tiebreaker in a home win over Carolina.

Nino Niederreiter had his 18th goal and added an assist, and Eric Haula also scored in regulation as the Wild improved to 4-0 against the Hawks this season. Devan Dubnyk stopped 29 shots through overtime and then was perfect in the shootout against the Hawks’ Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Artemi Panarin.

Andrew Shaw scored his 12th goal to end an 11-game drought and linemate Richard Panik connected to end a 14-game streak without a goal to bring the Blackhawks back from a 2-0 deficit.

Darling made his third straight start and finished with 32 saves, including several point-blank stops, as Blackhawks No. 1 goalie Corey Crawford remained sidelined day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

Kane, the NHL’s leading scorer, got up slowly after colliding with Minnesota’s Matt Dumba at the Wild blue line early in the third, but returned minutes later.

The Blackhawk outshot Minnesota 13-7 in the scoreless first but generated almost nothing during a four-minute power play early in the period, set up by Zach Parise’s double-minor for high-sticking Michal Rozsival.

The pace picked up late in the period, spurred by a high-energy shift by the Hawks’ fourth line of Shaw, Panik and Andrew Desjardins. Dubnyk made a point-blank save on Desjardins with 3:08 left to keep it scoreless.

Minnesota jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second on goals by Haula and Niederreiter.

Haula opened the scoring at 50 seconds on a shot from between the circles after taking Justin Fontaine’s deflected centering pass.

Niederreiter outmuscled the Hawks’ Marian Hossa and wrapped in a rebound of Jordan Schroeder’s shot at 7:04, just nine seconds after the Hawks killed Hossa’s tripping penalty.

Shaw cut it to 2-1 just 1:34 later after a nice move as he drove into the slot from the right boards. Shaw’s shot squeezed between Dubnyk’s right arm and torso, and trickled into the net.

Scoreboard watching is alive and well for the Bulls these days.

“We know that if we get into the playoffs we feel like we can do some damage, and I think we’re fighting for a lot right now,’’ forward Doug McDermott said.

With just 14 regular-season games left, including eight on the road, the Bulls haven’t actually made it easy for themselves.

Unless Charlotte or Boston have complete meltdowns, the bottom of the East is basically four teams fighting for the final two spots. Indiana holds the No. 7 right now, while the Bulls and Pistons are tied for the No. 8 and final spot.

Washington has won four straight to be close enough to make it interesting.

“This week is huge for us,’’ McDermott said. “There’s some winnable games on the schedule. Whoever comes out with the most energy at this point of the season usually wins. That’s been the big point of emphasis lately.’’

The hope for the Bulls is that message hasn’t been received too late.

28 Current evidence doesn’t support use of growth hormones as anti-aging treatment Note to readers: This column is an update of one that ran originally in January 2013.

Dear Dr. K: A friend of mine who is in her 70s is getting growth hormone shots.

She says it fights aging. I’m dubious that anything can fight aging and worry about side effects. Am I just old-fashioned?

Dear Reader: Well, you certainly are right to ask these questions. If there was a treatment that could slow aging and was risk-free, I guess we’d all take it.

Growth hormone (GH) is a protein produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. It gets its name from the fact that it is important in stimulating growth during childhood. Children born with a growth hormone deficiency are destined to be very short unless they are treated with growth hormone early in life.

What about using GH in aging adults?

First of all, there is absolutely no evidence that taking GH supplements will lengthen a person’s life. However, it does appear to have some beneficial effects.

GH promotes an increase in muscle mass and a decrease in body fat. As men age, GH levels fall. During the same time span, muscle mass declines and body fat increases. And so (the theory goes), the way to arrest these effects of aging is to inject GH. To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of GH in healthy older people, a team of researchers reviewed 31 high-quality studies. Together, these studies evaluated 220 people who received GH and 227 people who did not. Two-thirds of the subjects were men; their average age was 69. The dosage of GH varied, as did the duration of therapy.

As compared to the subjects who did not get GH, the treated individuals

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff gained an average of 4.6 pounds of lean body mass and shed a similar amount of body fat. There was a slight drop in total cholesterol levels, but no significant changes in LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, HDL (“good”) cholesterol, triglycerides, aerobic capacity, bone density, or fasting blood sugar and insulin levels. Sounds good, so far.

But here comes the bad news. People who used GH experienced a high rate of side effects. These included fluid retention, joint pain, breast enlargement and carpal tunnel syndrome.

A bigger concern is cancer. In laboratory studies, GH promotes the multiplication of cancer cells. Some epidemiological studies have found that people with naturally high levels of GH have higher rates of cancer. These studies by no means prove taking GH supplements raises a person’s risk of cancer, but it’s plausible they might.

So I don’t recommend taking GH supplements to fight aging. But there is a truly magical treatment that does slow aging in all parts of the body, including the brain – and it needn’t cause side effects.

If you’re regular readers of this column, you’ve probably guessed the name of the magical treatment: regular exercise. It will reduce your risk of many chronic illnesses and – it’s true – slow the ticking of the clock.

DEAR ABBY I am a young man who is in Jeanne college. When I Phillips was an infant, I was circumcised, and I feel violated my parents decided to circumcise me without my consent. When the doctor performed the surgery, he took too much off, which causes me pain.

When I was in grade school, I was sexually assaulted by an older classmate, but I feel much more violated from the circumcision because it took a part of me I can never get back. I am filled with hate and anger toward my parents, even though I know it is unfair to them because they believed they were making the right choice at the time.

My parents know how I feel and are sorry, but I still have these negative feelings toward them because I can’t get the procedure undone. Do you have any suggestions how I can overcome my dilemma and build a better relationship with my parents? – Cut Short In

Every promising bridge player learns from books. But this week, we are primarily going to look at getting to game. In today’s deal, South opens one spade, and North raises to two spades. What should South do now?

South has a hand that is not strong enough to jump to game, but has sufficient power to think about game. To recognize a hand that falls into this bracket, count its losers.

This one has one spade, two hearts, two diamonds (you worry only about the first three cards) and one club: a total of six. This is the number for a game-try after partner raises your major-suit opening to two.

South should rebid three diamonds, which is called a help-suit game-try. It implies losers in diamonds and asks partner to look primarily at his spades and diamonds.

Here, North has great holdings in those suits, so, despite only six highcard points, he should jump to four spades.

West begins the defense with three rounds of hearts. After ruffing, how should South continue?

Declarer has five losers: two hearts, two diamonds and one club.

He has only eight winners: five spades, two diamonds and one club.

But he can ruff two diamonds on the board.

South cashes the spade ace and queen, plays a diamond to dummy’s king, returns the diamond nine to his ace, ruffs a diamond with the spade 10, plays a club to his ace, trumps the last diamond with the spade king, and claims two of the last three tricks with his high trumps.
