Ballots favor Amato for state’s attorney

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Sycamore attorney Richard Amato appeared to cruise to victory Tuesday in a three-way race for the Republican nomination for State’s Attorney.

With 52 of 65 precincts reporting at deadline, Amato garnered 4,822 votes, or 45 percent of the votes cast. Clay Campbell was runner-up with 3,300 votes late Tuesday.

Charles Rea appeared headed for a third place finish, with almost 2,691 votes, according to unofficial totals.

“I’m proud of the work we did,” Amato said. “I’m proud of our supporters, friends and family that have worked with me. I’m thankful for the new friends I have by doing this. I’m appreciative of my wife for what she’s put up with the last two months.”

Amato, a Sycamore private attorney, is on his way to challenge incumbent DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack, a Democrat, in November’s general election. Amato is running on a platform that includes improving cooperation between the state’s attorney’s office and local law enforcement agencies to make prosecuting case more efficient.

The American Legion Post 66 was crowded Tuesday with court employees and law enforcement rallying behind Amato. Even Campbell said he was happy to see Amato succeed.

“Any time you lose to a good man, it’s actually fairly gratifying,” Campbell said.

Although the race was contentious at times, Rea said he is happy to have met so many of DeKalb County’s voters throughout the process.

“It really is touching to think of all of the people who have done things for you just out of the goodness of their hearts or because they believe in you,” he said. “It’s really been a warm and wonderful experience.”

where physical harm has taken place, cases involving child victims, and repeat felony offenders, he said.

Amato started 2016 with more than $18,000 in campaign receipts and $9,700 on hand. Most of the funds are loans Amato made to his campaign committee. He has loaned his campaign more than $17,000, according to filings with the state board of elections.

Amato and Campbell have agreed throughout their campaigns that the prosecution of traffic offenses, juvenile cases and marijuana charges are often drawn outtoo long. Time spent on these crimes takes away from work on more serious criminal cases.

A zero-tolerance policy toward violent crimes could be the solution to fast-tracking cases through the court system and preventing recidivism of violent offenders, Amato said.

Amato served as an assistant state’s attorney in DeKalb County for one year in 2003, before leaving to begin his own practice, Law Office of Amato and Sheen, 310 E. State St., Sycamore.

It’s too early to tell if Amato’s campaign will change, should he take on Schmack in the general election, Amato said.

“One down and one to go,” he said. “[We’ll] keep moving forward with the same plan we’ve been doing.”

HIGH TURNOUT BOOSTS BERNIE DeKalb County Clerk: Voter turnout topped 40 percent

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders walloped challenger Hillary Clinton in DeKalb County, where turnout was high and momentum for the Vermont senator was overwhelming.

DeKalb County Clerk Doug Johnson estimated that voter turnout topped 40 percent, as his office awaited final reports for 13 of 65 precincts in the county nearly three hours after polls had closed Tuesday night.

“I can easily confirm above 40 percent” voter turnout, said Johnson. “The voters came out and did their job.”

In 2012, 23 percent of DeKalb County voters eligible to cast ballots did so.

“We are very happy about the turnout,” Johnson said. He added that this year marked the first presidential election of his own term in office.

Scot Schraufnagel, associate professor of political science at Northern Illinois University, said that voter turnout is paramount to the election process, and Sanders needed it to be high for a victory here.

“It’s the mobilization of [candidates’] supporters and demobilization of [their] opponents,” he said.

“It’s the key to success.”

That appears to be what happened in DeKalb County. Of the 56,303 registered voters eligible to cast ballots here, an estimated 25,000 did, according to preliminary election data.

Weather has been a factor in elections past. But not this time around.

Heavy rain was forecast for parts of Election Day, especially for times when poll attendance would expect to peak – including early morning and after-work hours. Instead, those who headed out to polling places around the county were met with balmy end-of-winter temperatures in the 60s.

Incumbents, or even presumed party-picks, would tend to benefit from lower voter turnout, Schraufnagel said. He added that while barrages of negative campaign ads likely won’t change staunch supporter’s vote, it could keep them away from the polls.

From the speeches and rallies, to media ads and mailings, “All of those are geared carefully to affect turnout,” Schraufnagel said.

“The positive ads usually are intended to try and bring out your already-committed voters,” he said.

While Clinton led that count coming into the primary, she also wanted to thwart another upset

here. Sanders last week squeaked past her to win in Michigan, stirring a whirlwind of momentum as the two prepared for Tuesday.

Sanders won 65 percent to Clinton’s 34 percent, in DeKalb County.

But the former first lady and secretary of state won the state of Illinois.

Many voters went to the ballot box to cast votes in the presidential contest.

“You want to see who gets it,” said Todd Cassens, Sycamore, who voted for Bernie Sanders at the Sycamore Public Library polling place.

“You can’t really talk bad about what’s going on in the U.S. when you don’t vote.”

Brian Walsh, also of Sycamore,

agreed with Cassens sentiment – if not candidate. Walsh voted Clinton.

Walsh said he paid the most attention to candidates at the presidential level as opposed to candidates in local races.

Voters Anne Fischer and Mark Fischer said the same.

Anne Fischer said she it was important for her to vote “so Trump doesn’t win.”

Mark Fischer said that he always votes in the primaries, but has seen a lot more election coverage in the news this season. “[Voting] is a good thing to do,” he said. “We’ve been seeing more about it this year than any other year.”

Sales tax increase approved in Waterman

browland@shawmedia.com WATERMAN – Voters approved a 1 percentage point increase in the sales tax rate in the village Tuesday as part of plan to raise more money to pay for local government services.

Residents overwhelming approved the sales tax proposition at the ballot box, according to unofficial results.

Of the 26 total votes tallied on the measure Tuesday night, 20 were in favor, six were opposed.

“I think it’s wonderful. I’m grateful to the people of Waterman. They understood the need for this,” Village President Thomas Ekle said Tuesday night. “If this had not passed, we would still need to seek some way to increase revenue – all of the alternatives would have been more of a burden.”

The additional tax dollars will be used to pay for services such as snow plowing, police and leaf pickup, Ekle

said.

“I’m really pleased the majority of citizens trusted us to have the welfare of everyone in mind,” he said.

The measure increases the village’s sales tax rate from 6.25 percent to 7.25 percent on items such as prepared food, soft drinks and candy, personal hygiene products and auto parts. Items including prescriptions, groceries, and medical appliances are subject to a reduced rate.

The increase is expected to generate about $80,000 annually.

Waterman had to get residents’ approval, via referendum, to increase the sales tax rate because the village isn’t home rule. Trustees and Ekle had said additional tax dollars were needed after a grain business left the area, state aid decreased over the years and expenses climbed.

They said that bumping the sales tax up was more palatable than trying to raise property taxes.

Osland wins Republican nod in District 12 DAILY CHRONICLE SANDWICH – Jerald Osland came out ahead Tuesday in the only contested primary race for a seat on the DeKalb County Board.

Osland, 61, got 585 votes – or 52.42 percent of the total – topping opponent Phyllis Brown, 68, in the race to be the Republican to represent residents in the county’s 12th District, which includes Sandwich. Brown received 531 votes, or 47.58 percent of the total, according to unofficial totals.

“Having run a business and built it on my own, I think I understand what the needs are of people who are trying

to live in the area,” Osland previously told the Daily Chronicle.

Osland had said he believed that the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation’s proposal for gambling in Shabbona is one of the biggest issues facing the county. He wouldn’t say whether he supports the project.

“In my opinion, It would be highly unlikely to think that it’s only going remain a bingo gambling facility,” Osland said. “They would probably, at some point in time after they get the door open, approach [casino] gaming also.”

The incumbent, Jeffrey Metzger, decided not to seek re-election. Osland had lost to Metzger in 2012.

3 in custody after shots fired DeKalb unlawful assembly outside NIU student center law proposal withdrawn

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Three men have been arrested on mob action charges in connection with a report of shots fired in the bus turnaround outside the Northern Illinois University Holmes Student Cen- Malique ter.

Cunningham Arrested in connection with the incident are: Malique Cunningham, 20, of the 900 block of Crane Drive, DeKalb, Devon A. Williams, 22, of the 2300 block of Devon A. West Monroe Street, Williams Chicago, and Devonte Thomas, 19, of the 400 block of East Hillcrest Drive, DeKalb.

The suspected shooter, Cunningham, also has been charged with unlawful use of Devonte a weapon, and aggra- Thomas vated discharge of a firearm, jail officials said.

Cunningham could face from six to 30 years in prison years in prison if convicted of the most serious charge, aggravated discharge of a firearm. Williams and Thomas could face from one to three years in prison if convicted of mob action.

A fourth suspect was taken into custody but released without

charges, according to a news release from NIU Spokesperson Brad Hoey.

Witnesses reported hearing a single gunshot near the west side of the student center on Carroll Avenue at 9:15 p.m. Monday, according to a safety bulletin from NIU police.

There is no imminent threat to public safety as a result of the incident, police said. None of three men has any connection to the university, Hoey said.

“The university is currently on spring break this week and almost no NIU students were on campus at the time of the incident,” he said.

The gunplay happened after a group began to argue outside the student center about 9 p.m. Monday, when a man pulled a handgun and fired a single shot toward someone leaving the area, according to the news release.

No one was injured; investigators recovered a shell casing at the scene along with other evidence. Hoey said he did not know if the incident was gang related, but said police did not anticipate making any more arrests.

All three remained at the DeKalb County Jail on Tuesday afternoon without bond. Charges from the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office likely will be filed this morning before bond is set State’s Attorney Richard Schmack said.

bkeeperman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – DeKalb Police Chief Gene Lowery has withdrawn the controversial proposed ordinance on unlawful assemblies, as recommended by DeKalb’s Human Relations Commission, but has no trepidation on introducing another one at a later date.

“The ordinance was proposed with the best of intent in regards to issues around our country and our community,” Lowery said. “Citizens voiced concerns and we listened to those concerns. … I believe if this ordinance comes back in any form, we will take it directly to the Human Relations Commission.”

The police chief introduced the ordinance in January. It laid out what constitutes an unlawful assembly and gave direction to police officers in terms of how to respond. At the time, police said the ordinance was a needed tool in part because of how many parties take place near Northern Illinois University.

Community members opposed the ordinance – which passed at first reading in January – and the issue was taken before DeKalb’s Human Relations Commission, which held numerous hours-long discussions

“I hope at some point, it does come back,” Snow said. “First of all, this ordinance did not change anyone’s ability to peacefully assemble. I think it improved performance by the police department and reduced state penalties.”

technology rollout plan, which aims to put Chromebooks and tech devices in the hands of District 428 students. The plan comes with a multimillion-dollar price tag, however, and board members have voiced concern about whether or not the district has the money to fully implement the plan.

The modified plan means students in grades three, 11 and 12 will receive Chromebooks next school year, and kindergartners, first- and second-graders won’t be included in the program unless the district’s financial situation changes. The district projects ending up in a $1.7 million deficit for the 2016-17 school year, even with the modified plan.

The last time the district board met, members Rick Smith and Fred Davis both said they weren’t in favor of the district spending more money on the technology initiative. Davis said he could support the modified plan if absolutely necessary, and Smith said he didn’t want to spend an extra penny.

at Tuesday’s meeting. The board unanimously approved the modified plan.

Officials have implemented other cost-saving measures, said Andrea Gorla, the district’s superintendent of business and finance. In 2016-17, the copier won’t be replaced at the high school, which will save $95,000. The district also raised student registration rates by $20, which is estimated to bring in about $49,000 annually. Moving forward, the district will budget $50,000 for copier replacements. Officials also removed $16,000 from the elementary school budget that would have gone to building improvements.

Board President Victoria Newport said she felt confident about the modified technology plan.

“It’s a great way to go ahead and get more grade levels in one-to-one,” she said. “But also keep an eye on the financial side. In the high school especially, it really levels the playing field so much.”

DeKALB – DeKalb School District 428 Superintendent Doug Moeller will remain interim principal of DeKalb High School for the remainder of the school year after the district board unanimously approved a resignation agreement with former Principal Tamra Ropeter.

Ropeter was placed on paid administrative leave after a controversial Black History Month assembly put on by the high school’s Black Student Union on Feb. 24. Ropeter was out the next day. At the time, Moeller told parents it was because of a scheduled medical absence.

She was officially put on leave Feb. 26, which is when Moeller sent out a letter to parents informing them that Ropeter would be out for the rest of the year to address “personal matters.”

Ropeter will be paid according to her $125,000 salary through June 30, which is when her contract was set to

end. The separation agreement said Ropeter was put on leave because of parental concerns about the assembly.

Ropeter did not attend Tuesday’s meeting. The board recognized the DHS Forensics team Tuesday, including Ariel Williams, who took second place in the state competition for the same piece she performed at the assembly. Moeller said Ropeter didn’t resign because of the assembly.

“There were other issues involved besides the BSU assembly,” Moeller said. “There were some seriously personal issues. There was a lot more to it.”

Moeller added that although he personally didn’t find the portion of the assembly he saw as offensive, the backlash could have been handled better.

“There are some things that maybe weren’t handled appropriately, but that didn’t necessarily lead to her resignation,” he said. “There were a lot of personal issues that we can’t discuss.”

New heart-shaped glass dishes sell for just a few dollars today. The 1925 dishes sold wholesale in a set of 24 dishes and a dipper for $8.28. In recent years, a single dish has auctioned for about $1,000. *** Q: I bought two large cups with handles with a shield mark. Inside the shield there is a horn with the words “Porcelaine” above it and “De Sologne, LaMotte” and the number “3” below. The pattern is a pretty splay of pink flowers and green leaves and the rim inside is gold-gilt palmettos. The shield itself is all in gold. I can’t find any-

thing like it. Can you help?

Get a clue to the age of an antique from part of the style, like a ball and claw foot on a Chippendale chair of the 18th century, or a hammered aluminum bowl of the 1930s. But sometimes the style is unfamiliar and even the use is a mystery. The most daring designers of the 1920s era were making Art Deco pieces with geometric designs, symmetry and a streamlined look. But some artists created their own styles and even used unique pieces of metal or other unusual materials. Oscar Bach (1884-1957) was born in Germany and studied painting and metallic arts. He became artistic director of a firm winning awards for his designs.

He used the signs of the zodiac, mythological figures, grapevines, masks, grotesque figures and other designs from the past. Jewels adorned some special-order boxes and book covers. In 1911, he moved to the United States to join his brother. They formed the Oscar B. Bach Studios and marked almost all of their work with that name. Most of his metal work was made to order. After Bach had an unfriendly split with a partner, not his brother, he was upset to learn the ex-partner continued to use his designs, selling the metal work with no name or a new name. This has caused confusion for today’s collectors. But the quality and originality of Bach’s

work can be identified by experts.

A strange iron table and chair “in the manner of Bach” sold at Cowan’s Auctions in Cincinnati in the winter of 2015. It has a marble top on an iron cabinet with enamel painted doors and extra tall, thin legs. The front is decorated with brass panels of nudes and a clue to its use. Each figure is holding a telephone receiver.

The matching chair with dragons and a spire on the back also is of twisted iron and brass. Another clue, the telephone stand or table is a furniture form that was in use from about the 1915 to the 1960s.The piece is not marked, so it sold for only $450, much less than an authenticated work

by Bach. Even if the new owner does not need furniture to hold a phone and note pad for a seated pers on taking a call, the Bach-like stand and chair will be a conversation piece. *** Q: I’m looking for information about an old icebox with the name plate “Ice-Way Approved Refrigerator with corkboard insulation, built especially for the ice industry.” When was it made and what might it be worth?

A: Ice-Way refrigerators were sold under the brand name “Leonard” and were made by the Grand Rapids Refrigerator Company. The company was founded

by Charles H. Leonard in 1881 as the Leonard Refrigerator Company. At first it made wooden icebox cabinets. Electric refrigerators were made in 1918. Leonard Ice-Way refrigerators were made in several styles and sizes. They

Walz poised to capture Democratic nod in 14th

bschory@shawmedia.com Jim Walz of Gurnee was ahead in Tuesday’s three-way Democratic primary in the 14th Congressional District, with 13,145 votes in unofficial and incomplete results.

The winner will run against incumbent U.S. Representative Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, in the Nov. 8 general election. Hultgren ran unopposed in the primary.

Walz ran against John Hosta of Spring Grove, who received 11,206 votes and Jesse Lee Maggit of Plainfield, who got 5,868 votes, also in unofficial incomplete results.

“There is a long way to go,” Walz said late Tuesday. “I certainly want to be victorious, but I am no way in a position to say anything. ... But I am heartened by the voter turnout for the party, and I think that that’s a very good thing.”

Maggitt was undaunted by being in third place, saying his purpose in running was a means to help unite the Democratic Party “so we can be put on the path of doing some great things.”

“I am the new guy on the ticket, but I am not short on experience,” Maggitt said. “I will go back and meet with Democratic Party chairmen of each county and get an idea of

their strategies for uniting the party at their level. It’s imperative that we are focused on creating balance in Congress.”

Hosta did not return a call seeking comment.

All three had said any of them could do a better job in Congress than the incumbent, Hultgren.

Walz, a Warren Township school board member, had said he was running because “the middle class is woefully unrepresented in Washington to the point that we are not represented at all. And it seems like the moneyed interests get any and all of the attention, and that does not seem to be quite right to me.”

Foxx wins Cook County State’s Attorney race

CHICAGO – Kim Foxx unseated Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez, who was criticized for her handling of the shooting death of black teenager Laquan McDonald at the hands of a white Chicago police officer.

Foxx is a former aid to the County Board president.

Alvarez has faced angry public demonstrations and calls for her resignation after she took a year to charge officer Jason Van Dyke in McDonald’s death, which was captured on a police dashcam. The uproar over how the shooting was handled led to Alvarez losing key political supporters, including a majority of the City Council’s Latino members and U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez.

Also in the race was former prosecutor Donna More.

CONGRESS

U.S. Rep. John Shimkus and state Sen. Kyle McCarter, both Republicans, are vying for the 15th District, while Democrats are battling it out in the 10th District with Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering and former U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider.

TURNOUT TRENDS AND PROBLEMS

Many took advantage of early voting, but some counties still experienced problems Tuesday and had to stop extend precinct hours to let people cast their ballots.

In Sangamon County, the seat of Illinois’ capital city of Springfield, historic turnout meant officials had to print more ballots for both parties and allowed voting for an extra hour to accommodate people. Officials in Adams County in western Illinois experience the same issue.

In Cook County – the state’s largest – four suburban Chicago precincts in three communities stayed open an hour later because polls got a late start.

Early voting in Cook County was particularly dramatic, doubling the number from 2008, the last time both parties had contested primaries. That year, 51,116 voters cast ballots early.

The number was dwarfed by the 119,267 who voted by Monday this year.

CONTENTIOUS LEGISLATIVE RACES

Union-supported Juliana Stratton, whom President Barack Obama backed with a rare endorsement, defeated incumbent Democratic Rep. Ken Dunkin in Chicago’s 5th District.

Dunkin drew the wrath of his colleagues – and Rauner’s backing – because he voted against pro-labor legislation.

Including money spent by independent groups, the combined price tag for the race surpassed $6 million.

In the 50th Senate District, incumbent Republican Sen. Sam McCann was battling Rauner and his own party for voting in favor of a pro-union measure.

His primary against Bryce Benton has already reached $4 million spent. Votes were still being tallied in that race.

Duckworth, Kirk wins set up Nov. senate contest

CHICAGO – U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate on Tuesday, making official a matchup with Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk that’s been informally underway for months.

The already-contentious race is expected to be one of the costliest and hardest fought of the November election.

Democrats see Kirk’s seat in this typically blue state as one of the party’s best chances to unseat an incumbent as they try to regain control of the U.S. Senate.

Duckworth, an Iraq War veteran from Hoffman Estates, used big advantages in fundraising and name recognition to defeat former Chicago Urban League CEO Andrea Zopp and Napoleon Harris, a state senator and former NFL player from Harvey who owns several suburban Chicago pizza restaurants.

Zopp, of Chicago, went after Duckworth particularly hard in recent weeks, saying she had little to show for two terms in Congress and criticizing her for not participating in more than one televised debate. Both she and Harris, who are African American, also argued they would do more to reduce gun violence, improve the criminal justice system and bring jobs to struggling neighborhoods.

Duckworth kept her focus squarely on Kirk, who is seeking his second Senate term after five terms representing Chicago’s northern suburbs in the U.S. House.

Kirk, of Highland Park, defeated Oswego businessman James Marter on Tuesday after a primary in which the little-known candidate presented himself as the more conservative option.

WASHINGTON – Former city and federal officials pointed fingers at one another for failing to protect the 100,000 citizens of Flint, Michigan, from lead-laced water at a congressional hearing Tuesday as Republicans targeted for blame an Environmental Protection Agency executive who resigned as the crisis worsened.

Amid withering criticism, Susan Hedman sought to defend the EPA’s actions to deal with the contamination in the predominantly African-American city. “I don’t think anyone at EPA did anything wrong, but I do believe we could have done more,” said Hedman, the former director of the EPA’s Midwest regional office.

Hedman stepped down Feb. 1 over what she called “false allegations” that portrayed her as sitting on the sidelines during the crisis and that she “downplayed concerns raised by an EPA scientist about lead in the water.” The scientist Hedman was referring to is Miguel Del Toral, a regulations manager in the groundwater and drinking water branch of the Midwest office.

Flint switched its water source from Detroit’s water system to the Flint River in 2014 to save money, but the river water was not treated properly and lead from aging pipes leached into Flint homes and businesses. Elevated levels of lead have been found in children’s blood. Lead contamination has been linked to learning disabilities and other problems.

CLEVELAND – Hillary Clinton triumphed Tuesday in the Florida, Ohio and North Carolina presidential primaries, putting her in a commanding position to become the first woman in U.S. history to win a major party nomination.

Donald Trump strengthened his hand in the Republican race with a big win in Florida but fell in Ohio to that state’s governor, John Kasich.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio ended his once-promising campaign after his devastating home-state loss, so the GOP primary is now down to three candidates: Trump, Kasich and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

Trump also picked up wins in North Carolina and Illinois, and was locked in a close race with Cruz in Missouri.

The billionaire businessman told a victory rally, “This was an amazing night.”

Trump is the only Republican candidate with a realistic path to the 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the nomination before the July convention. But his loss in Ohio kept hope alive for mainstream Republicans dismayed by his candidacy and suggesting the real estate mogul can still be stopped in a convention fight.

“The campaign goes on,” Kasich declared at a victory rally. Now thrust into the center of a campaign that has been bitingly personal, Kasich vowed to “not take the low road to the highest office in the land.”

A confident Clinton pivoted quickly to November during her victory rally, assailing Trump’s hardline immigration positions and support for torture. “Our commander-in-chief has to be able to defend our country, not embarrass it,” she declared.

Underscoring Republican concerns about Trump, Rubio focused heavily on an implicit critique of Trump in a speech announcing he was dropping out of the race. The senator urged Americans to “not give in to the fear, do not give in to the frustration.”

A favorite of Republican leaders, Rubio is the latest candidate to fall victim to an unpredictable election cycle and Trump’s unmatched ability to tap into the public’s anger with Washington and frustration with sweeping economic changes.

Clinton’s victories in Ohio and Florida were a blow to rival Bernie Sanders and bolstered her argument that she’s the best Democratic candidate to take on the eventual Republican nominee in the general election. Her win in Ohio was a particular relief for her campaign, which grew anxious after Sanders pulled off a surprising win last week in Michigan, another important Midwestern state.

Clinton kept up her large margins with black voters, a crucial group for Democrats in the general election. Democratic voters were more likely to describe Sanders as honest, but more likely to describe Clinton’s policies as realistic, according to exit polls.

Padding the military budget It’s as much a springtime tradition in Washington as the White House Easter Egg Roll, although not nearly as edifying: As Congress takes up the Defense Department’s budget request, lawmakers scramble to add ships, tanks and planes the military hasn’t even asked for.

This year, however, taxpayers have been promised change – and it’s easy to test how serious Congress is.

The chairmen of the House and Senate Armed Services Committees, Rep. Mac Thornberry of Texas and Sen. John McCain of Arizona, have pledged to rein in runaway defense spending. There are plenty of pet projects lawmakers want to add to the military’s 2017 budget, but three stand out: • Purchasing three new littoral combat ships rather than the two the military has requested, wiping out hundreds of millions in planned savings.

• Allocating money to a special fund that would allow the Navy to build the next-generation nuclear-armed submarine without dipping into its ordinary shipbuilding budget.

• Building 10 new Virginia-class attack submarines, which cost around $2.5 billion each, instead of the nine the military requested over a five-year period.

All of these proposals have two things in common.

First, their supporters say they’re critical to national defense. Second, they bring federal money to their supporters’ districts. In most cases, that first claim is simply untrue. Even when it isn’t, it doesn’t necessarily follow that the project should be approved.

The littoral combat ships, for example, have been a contracting disaster, vastly over cost and underperforming. The entire program needs a strict review to decide which one of the two versions should be canceled, or even both.

The fund would just rob Peter (the Army and Air Force) to pay Paul (the Navy). There are far better ways to free up money for the next-generation nuclear-armed submarine, including smarter contracting that would better defray spending over years and hold contractors, not taxpayers, responsible for cost overruns. Besides, if the money is set aside, it would just encourage the other branches to use this same budgeting gimmick.

The most defensible project is probably the Virginia, the world’s best conventionally armed attack sub. It’s a central part of U.S. efforts to counter Chinese expansionism in the Pacific. The Navy eventually will get up to 48 of the Virginia subs, but there’s no pressing security reason to add another to the next batch.

Which goes to the larger point: This kind of budgeting process does even worthy projects no favors.

As they consider the Pentagon’s budget, members of Congress should bear in mind that a country stays powerful by spending wisely. Further padding a military budget already at $600 billion may be politically advantageous for lawmakers. But it won’t make Americans safer.

Yet Rep. Sosnowski (R-Rockford), Rep. Bob Pritchard (R-Hinckley) and Rep. Tom Demmer (R-Dixon) have failed to support funding Monetary Assistance Program (MAP) grants for needy students to attend Kishwaukee College, Sauk Valley Community College and Rock Valley College, as well as Northern Illinois University.

As a result, Illinois will continue to drop in educational attainment of workers as higher education costs exceed the reach of many students.

If these gentlemen are truly representatives for their districts, they will strive to do something for their constituents that will better their lives.

That means they will work to find solutions rather than sitting around collecting their $67,800-a-year salaries from the state merely to point fingers and not take their elected positions seriously.

Celebrating the diverse staff of District 428

To the Editor: Now that some time has passed since the DeKalb High School Black Student Union assembly content caused an explosion of opinions on social media, I felt compelled to speak out.

Many people feel that our district isn’t “diverse” enough. One of the definitions of diversity is as follows

– the inclusion of individuals representing more than one national origin, color, religion, socioeconomic stratum, sexual orientation, etc.

As a teacher at DeKalb High for more than 20 years, I have lived through the many positive changes brought about by the diversity of our community.

Our DCTA union members have come together to support our community by financially supporting and/ or volunteering at Barb Food Mart, organizing food drives, coat drives, school supply drives, as well as providing tutoring and homework help, to mention a few.

What many people are failing to see is that diversity is about more than just skin color. I am proud to teach alongside many teachers, assistants, counselors and administrators who have very different lives than mine.

We as a community can move forward in a positive light by building personal relationships with others; accepting our commonalities as well as our differences, while maintaining the common goal of helping our students succeed.

As stated in an African Proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child,” our “village” of DeKalb needs to come together for our children.

We need to guide them to be more accepting of others. Each day, the D-428 staff works to meet the needs of our students. We want the best for all students; those who may have breakfast made for them each morning by a stay-at-home parent and those who rely on the free or reduced fee meals provided at school.

Our community needs to reflect on one of the mantras of our district and ask themselves, “Do you have the heart of a Barb?”

Assuming his rebuke in November, the natural tendency will be to mop the brow and sigh in relief at the bullet we just dodged. This would be a mistake. Defeating Trump would not erase the forces that made him possible. As the last few years have shown, those forces, like some virulent cancer, tend to redouble after setback and return stronger than before.

You thought George W. Bush was a piece of work? Meet Sarah Palin.

You think Sarah Palin was scary?

Meet Trump. It would not be a good idea to wait around and see who trumps Donald four years from now. So after Trump, there are things we must do: 1. Confront economic insecurity.

We need to elect leaders who understand that corporations are not people; only people are people and they are struggling. Their wages are stagnant, their finances precarious

and the wealth that is supposed to trickle down from the grotesquely overfed money pigs at the top always seems to evaporate en route.

It is time for this to change.

2. Confront ignorance. It is no coincidence Trump is especially popular among the less well-educated.

The less you know, the more fearsome and confounding the world can seem, and the more susceptible you are to the authoritarian figure who promises to make everything all right again. Education must be rescued from the anti-science, anti-history, anti-logic, anti-intellect agendas of conservative school boards around the country.

Knowing things is important. Facts matter.

3. Confront bigotry. Stop pretending it doesn’t exist, stop making excuses for it, stop acting as if it will go away if you only ignore it. In our schools, civic groups, mosques, churches and synagogues, we must evolve some form of truth and reconciliation that allows us to walk through disparate pain up to common ground. Only in this way can we diminish the power of bigotry as a cudgel.

4. Confront fear. Fear is bigotry’s firstborn child. Both are heightened in an era wherein the majority feels itself, its position and prerogatives, under siege by the ascendance of various minorities – racial, religious and sexual. So it becomes ever more important to find strategies that help us to locate in one another our shared humanity.

And oh, yes...

5. Confront apathy. Vote.

This is how we can change the paradigm, cool the temperature, drain the swamp.

Or we can pretend this temper tantrum, this national nervous breakdown, means nothing once Trump is gone. But to embrace that option is to miss the point. Donald Trump is a reflection of the ugliness within us, but only that. The ugliness itself is ours and we are long overdue to face it.

The day after he is gone would be an excellent time to start.

Responsible limits should prevail

It is possible, or should be, to repair the United States’ dysfunctional immigration system and extend a path to citizenship or legal status to the country’s 11 million undocumented immigrants while at the same time recognizing that meaningful laws and a controlled border are critical components of any stable society.

Yet by listening to the Q and A at the Democratic debate last week, one might have formed the impression that compassion vs. order amounts to an either-or proposition.

To hear the candidates (mainly Bernie Sanders) and questioners, you would think borders should be absolutely permeable and deportations off the table.

You might also get the idea that in a Sanders administration,

virtually any Hispanic migrant who made it over the border – certainly every child – would be indefinitely welcome in the United States.

No limits, no rules, no expulsions and no rule of law. Even for those who have yearned for a sane immigration policy that allows illegal immigrants to emerge from the shadows and live normal lives – and we count ourselves in that camp – it is hard to imagine a more effective recipe for chaos and easy to imagine a flood of migrants that would soon trigger a virulent political backlash, or worse.

Donald Trump’s proposal to build a massive wall along the 2,000mile length of the southern border is a demonstrably stupid idea – wasteful, unnecessary and self-defeating.

However, a well-regulated and

secure border is not a stupid idea.

Nor are sensible policies that judiciously weigh asylum claims and set quotas at levels consistent with the demands of the economy and labor market.

At the debate, a Spanish-speaking questioner who recounted the sad story of her husband’s deportation tugged at the audience’s heartstrings and elicited pledges from the candidates that they would do their utmost to reunite her family. Most compassionate people would give a similar answer. But the law matters, the circumstances and facts of that particular case are relevant, and not every divided family has an absolute right to be reunified north of the border.

The problem with some of the candidates’ responses – and some of

the questions – is that they presupposed that reasonable limits are somehow sinister. If no child should ever be deported, as both candidates suggested, does that also mean the gates at the border should swing open to every minor who approaches, that none has a claim better than another’s, or that Washington should encourage children and families to migrate, notwithstanding the dangers and privations to which they may fall victim along the way?

Immigration advocates have pressed for policies that approach an open border for all. That is their right. Candidates for the presidency have a different responsibility, which is to weigh competing interests and determine the nation’s best course.

We should probably start thinking about what we’re going to do after Trump.

Of course, if the nation decides it really does want a vulgar, narcissistic bigot with the impulse control of a sleep-deprived toddler as its 45th president, the options left to thinking Americans will be few, but stark: Either curl up in a fetal ball for four years or jam the pedal to the metal on the northbound interstate and don’t stop till you see moose.

Try to get there before the Canadians build their border wall.

If, however, the more likely scenario prevails and the electorate rejects Donald Trump, we will face a different set of options. The first is to finally take a stand against the forces that brought us here.

Those forces – economic insecurity, ignorance, bigotry and fear – are hardly new. Many observers, this one included, have bemoaned them for years. Trump’s innovation has been to drag the last three into the light, to render dog whistles and codes obsolete with his full-throated, wide-open embrace of all that is ugly and shameful about

“I thought we made some good adjustments at halftime and created some more dangerous opportunities,” Hamilton said. “I thought we did a good job in the first half in creating opportunities, but the dangerous opportunities I thought were more valid in the second half.”

AD: NCAA funds will pay for Vegas 16 DeKALB – Northern Illinois athletic director Sean Frazier said it won’t be donors who pay for the pricetag of the Vegas 16 tournament.

Frazier said money given by the NCAA to the school has been allocated to pay the $50,000 it will cost for the men’s basketball team to play in the inaugural eight-team tournament in Vegas this month.

“We have NCAA dollars dedicated to postseason,” Frazier said at a news conference Tuesday. “There’s no magic hat, there’s no money tree in the backyard.

We know the constraints around resources, but the NCAA dedicates resources for postseason and what we’ve done is dedicate those resources to men’s basketball.”

The Huskies will open the tournament against UC Santa Barbara on March 28.

The Gauchos (18-13, 11-5 Big West Conference) played seven teams that made the NCAA tournament and lost to Akron, 8470, in a tournament in December.

Frazier said one of the benefits of the Vegas 16 tournament compared to other “pay-to-play” tournaments such as the CollegeInsider Tournament and College Basketball Invitational is that it will be in one site – Mandalay Bay

Arena – over three days.

Also, all of the games will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.

“The other thing I like about this tournament is we’re going to be on TV – national television,” Frazier said. “It doesn’t get any better than that. We’re going to be right in the mix.”

The Huskies (21-12) are playing in the postseason for the fourth time in school history and first in two decades, when they lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament to Texas Tech in the 1995-96 season.

“It might be different for the guys who are in their first year [at NIU] and are going to the postseason, they might be spoiled a little bit,” said senior guard Travon Baker, who had to suffer through a 5-25 season for the Huskies during his freshman season.

NIU also became the sixth team from the Mid-American Conference to be named to a postseason tournament, and the Huskies will be the only team from the conference in the Vegas 16.

“We want to represent our conference,” NIU coach Mark Montgomery said. “We’re going to wear that MAC symbol proud. We’re going to show why we were a top 10 RPI conference.”

One of the benefits to the tournament for the Huskies is that the small

bracket and time off allows the Huskies to have a scouting report for every team. Montgomery said he and his assistant coaches will scout all seven teams, saying the Huskies are planning on being there for all three days.

The Vegas 16 was the last tournament to be finalized Monday evening.

Although the bracket only had eight teams instead of 16 – causing ridicule on social media – the teams have an average RPI of 123, which is higher than the CBI (161) and CIT (168). Frazier said although there were some rumors the tournament would fold, he was confident a deal would get done.

“I had no fear,” he said. “I did understand the organizers were trying to put together a competitive field and they did that based on the RPI. What we saw was a deliberate attempt to attract teams that had a body of work.”

Montgomery said the team will take time to enjoy the trip to Vegas – “we’ll take in a show or two,” he said – but that they are going there to win the championship. He also noted that ending the postseason drought could positively help the Huskies in recruiting.

“They can’t use it against us,” he said. “They can’t say NIU hasn’t been in the postseason in 20 years. That’s not us now. We’ve started something.”

“It’s just a confident group of kids,” Hamilton said. “You come out in the first half, get that clean sheet, it builds a lot of confidences and the belief we’re going to get the job done, and get it done the right way.”

The Barbs are back in action March 23 at home against Harlem.

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Adam LaRoche’s decision to walk away from baseball and $13 million this season was a stunner.

On the other hand, knowing the 36-year-old’s convictions, family values and an apparent weariness from spending an increasing amount of time in the trainer’s room, it wasn’t a complete shock.

During a lengthy team meeting at the club’s spring training facility Tuesday morning, LaRoche told the White

Sox his intentions to call it quits.

“I’ve decided to step away from baseball,” LaRoche quietly told two Chicago newspaper reporters afterward, citing personal reasons.

“I’ll have more in a day or two.”

LaRoche said he wanted another day to sleep on it, but rest asAdam LaRoche sured, this is it.

“I wanted to make sure it was the right move and not make an emotional decision,” he said. “I’m confident it is.”

LaRoche hasn’t played in 10 days af-

ter leaving his second game with a low back spasm. He said the back completely locked up on him like never before, and to see him in obvious discomfort, face down in a confined visitors clubhouse trainer’s room, made you wonder how much he had left. After all, he had come to camp in seemingly good shape and then he homered in his first game of the spring.

And then he had a setback.

An accomplished hitter over the course of his career, LaRoche batted .207 with only 12 homers and 44 RBIs last season after signing a two-year, $25 million contract to bat cleanup

and protect Jose Abreu in the lineup.

He failed, endured minor but nagging injuries and felt sincerely bad about earning his paycheck.

To know LaRoche personally was to know a candidate, if there ever was one, who would give his earnings back. In a sense, he’s doing that in 2016 by taking the Sox off the hook for $13 million.

“We’ve always known this was a high-character guy,” general manager Rick Hahn said. “If this is the end, this was a guy who obviously had a very solid, extensive big-league career, and in the end was playing this game for the right reasons, not for strictly economic ones.”

DeKalb

Keck admits the Barbs underachieved during the tough conference play and expects to have a better record this season. Hoyle returns as the ace, and Perkins is likely to be the No. 2. A big reason for a strong season for DeKalb could be the play of Nunez, who takes over as catcher after the graduation of Noah Baert, who was on the Daily Chronicle All-Area first team last year.

Sycamore

Last year: 24-11 overall, lost 4-2 to Kaneland in the Class 3A Hampshire Regional final Top returners: Jordan Wright, sr., CF; Michael Beaudoin, sr., C/P; Jack Mizgalski, jr., P/1B/SS

Key newcomers: Mickey Mathey, sr., 2B; Tyler Maveus, sr., OF; Austin Perry, so., C Coach Jason Cavanaugh’s comments: “We have a lot of good arms – unproven, for sure, but look good indoors. How does that translate? We might take our lumps early, but I think we have the guys to have a pretty good group of pitchers.”

The lowdown: It will be a smaller group for the Spartans this year, with only 14 players on the varsity roster. However, Wright returns after leading the team with a .396 batting average and was named to the Daily Chronicle All-Area team, and Beaudoin was strong behind the plate and likely will pitch some this year, which will put more catching duties on Perry’s shoulders. A big question mark will be replacing the strong group of pitchers – including the Daily Chronicle Player of the Year in Colan Treml. However, Mizgalski didn’t allow a run in the 10 innings he pitched and has emerged as a possible No. 1 starter for the Spartans.

Kaneland

Last year: 23-13 overall, lost 6-5 to Belvidere North in a Class 3A Sycamore Sectional semifinal Top returners: Joe Laudont, sr., C; Matt O’Sullivan, sr., P/1B; Matt Rosko, sr., RF; Jake Marczuk, sr., CF

Kaneland had a nice run in the postseason – beating Sycamore, 4-2, in the Class 3A Hampshire Regional final – and Aversa said the Knights have to replace their infield, but they have a chance to repeat as Northern Illinois Big 12 East champions.

Genoa-Kingston

Last year: 14-14-1, lost 6-3 to Belvidere North in the Class 3A Belvidere North Regional final.

Offensively, he also hit .391 with a team-high 20 RBIs, plus hit .444 with runners in scoring position. If the Cogs make a run in the postseason, Huffman will be a major reason why.

Hiawatha

Guinness the secret to the richest chocolate cake ever

or me, St. Patrick’s Day isn’t just an excuse to drink Irish whiskey and Guinness. It’s also an excuse to bake with them.

Not too long ago, I had an idea to bake a chocolate cake spiked with Guinness, then topped with a whiskey glaze. The affinity between the chocolate and the Guinness was amazing.

When I created the recipe, I started with my aunt’s chocolate pound cake, which my mother had remembered as spectacular. My aunt’s basic cake was good, but tastes have changed and I thought it was a bit reserved. I wanted this cake to be luscious, moist and very chocolaty, So I increased the cocoa to a whole cup, substituting an additional 1/2 cup of cocoa for an equal amount of the flour.

For additional richness, I mixed Guinness with an equal amount of half-and-half. And to tie all the flavors together – a hint of freshly grated nutmeg. You don’t really taste it, but it highlights all the other flavors.

The first time I made the cake, I made the Irish whiskey glaze and it was good. But I thought it was wasteful to have to buy both Guinness and Irish whiskey if you didn’t already have it on hand. So I changed the glaze to a Guinness glaze. You can buy a single can of Guinness in almost every grocery store, and having Guinness in both the cake and the glaze is not only delicious but economical, as well.

The glaze is an essential part of the cake, as you poke holes in the cake when it is still warm and slowly spoon the glaze over the cake until the holes are filled with it. That way, once the cake is cooled and sliced, each piece has rivets of deep chocolate glaze set into the top of the cake.

For anyone who is nervous the cake will taste like beer, it does not.

The Guinness adds a stouty richness that makes the cake the best chocolate cake you have ever eaten. It is so good I had to make it three times when I visited my sister and her large family because each time I made it, it was gone before everyone could have a slice. This is the best way I know to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day, the Ides of March, or anytime you want a great piece of chocolate cake.

Start to finish: 2 hours (15 minutes active) Servings: 12

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Pinch of kosher salt

Heat the oven to 325 degrees F. Coat a 12cup Bundt pan very well with cooking spray.

Sprinkle in a bit of cocoa powder, turning to For the cake: 1 cup cocoa powder, plus extra for the pan coat evenly, then overturning to discard any 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened excess.

In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to 2½ cups granulated sugar beat together the butter and sugar. Add the 4 large eggs eggs, one at a time, and beat until smooth.

1/2 teaspoon baking powder In a large bowl, whisk together the 1 cup 1/2 teaspoon baking soda of cocoa powder, the flour, baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt baking soda, salt and nutmeg. In a 2-cup liq1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg uid measuring cup, stir together the vanilla, 1 tablespoon vanilla extract half-and-half and Guinness.

Meanwhile, prepare the glaze. In a medium bowl, whisk together all ingredients until smooth. Set aside.

When the cake is done, let it cool in the pan for 25 minutes. Set a wire cooling rack over the pan, then invert it so the cake stands on the rack. For ease of cleanup, set the rack over a rimmed baking sheet or a sheet of kitchen parchment. Use a tooth pick to poke deep holes all over the top of the cake.

Spoon glaze over the top of the cake and wait until it seeps into the holes. Spoon more glaze into the holes, then wait 10 minutes.

Spoon the remaining glaze all over the top so it covers the holes and drizzles down the sides.

Patience pays off when it comes to the best yeast rolls

I was one of those kids who loved camp. I loved being away. I loved all of the activities. And I loved the food.

Well, at least I loved the homemade yeast rolls that graced the table at every meal. I ate them in pairs, hot out of the oven, their tops salty with butter and the aroma so heady I would inhale as deeply as I could before devouring them. To this day, yeast rolls can transport me. They are like a warm blanket that envelopes you in pure comfort.

I have tried a lot of rolls in my adult life trying to find one that would come even close to my camp experience. But each one has come up short. That is, until I walked into the Harrison Smith House, a small restaurant in Bardstown, Kentucky.

Bardstown is famous for bourbon.

Several distilleries – including Jim Beam, Heaven Hill Distilleries and Maker’s Mark – operate in and around Bardstown. But it is now famous to me for the best yeast rolls I’ve had since camp. And believe me, they are worth the trip. But while you’re there, you also might as well partake in a little

Bourbon exploration.

The rolls are the handiwork of Josh Smouse, who is the chef de cuisine of the Harrison Smith House. Like the owners, Newman Miller and Justin Hughes, he previously cooked in Louisville and Chicago. The three have been friends, roommates and colleagues throughout their culinary careers. Now back in their home state of Kentucky, they are bringing a traveled palate to their Southern table.

But the rolls, offered as a side dish, never traveled out of state. Josh started making them first for his family at Christmas. He later decided to try them out at the restaurant, where he substituted them for the more common cornbread, and the rest is history. Smouse makes a minimum of 60 rolls a day, but my version of his recipe will produce a more reasonable 16. If you want to make more, no problem; the recipe doubles easily.

This recipe is pretty foolproof and doesn’t need very much attention or kneading. The real secret is patience, as you will have to go through four rises and lots of waiting to make these tender, flaky and delicate buttery yeast rolls. Just remember what your mother said: “Good things come to

those who wait.”

Buttery Yeast Rolls

Start to finish: 6 hours (30 minutes active) Makes 16 rolls 2¾ cups all-purpose flour 1/3 cup sugar 2 envelopes instant yeast 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 cup whole milk 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature, cut into pieces, plus 1/2 cup (1 stick) salted butter, melted 2 egg yolks In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, yeast and salt. Set aside.

In the microwave or a small saucepan over low, heat the milk to 110 degrees F. Add the 6 tablespoons of unsalted butter and stir to combine and melt the butter. Once the butter is completely melted, whisk the egg yolks into the butter-milk mixture. Pour the liquid mixture into the dry mixture. Mix well to completely incorporate all ingredients. The dough will be loose and very sticky.

Once your dough is well combined, place a clean towel over the bowl and set it in a warm spot (such as over a heated oven) for 2

hours. After 2 hours, punch down the dough to deflate it, then knead in the bowl a few times. The dough will be sticky, but resist the urge to add any more flour. Gather all the dough into a nice ball and transfer to an oiled bowl. Cover with the towel and let rise again until doubled, about 2 hours.

Once doubled, portion into roughly sixteen 2-ounce (roughly 2-inch) pieces. Shape by rolling pieces of dough in a ball between your hands and stretching the top under the ball.

Place the dough balls on ungreased baking trays. Cover with a towel and allow to rise for 1 hour.

Heat the oven to 325 degrees F. Just before baking, brush the rolls with a bit of the melted butter. Bake for 15 minutes, then remove them from the oven, brush liberally with butter, then bake for another 10 minutes. Remove the rolls from the oven and brush once more with butter. Let the rolls rest on the pan for 20 to 30 minutes before serving.

Nutrition information per roll: 200 calories; 100 calories from fat (50 percent of total calories); 11 g fat (7 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 50 mg cholesterol; 170 mg sodium; 20 g carbohydrate; 1 g fiber; 4 g sugar; 3 g protein.

With Theresa Caputo, from TLC’s “Long Island Medium,” set to visit Northern Illinois University’s Convocation Center next month, I felt it was time to look back at some mystic prophecies, otherworldly communications and psychic doings from DeKalb County’s past.

DeKalb County, as were most other U.S. communities, was a frequent whistle-stop and home base for practitioners of the paranormal. At least one psychic put down roots in Sycamore.

Missy Fanny Bell was a regular advertiser in the Daily Chronicle in 1904. She was billed as “psychic and trance medium” who consulted on “business, matrimony, changes, travel, health or any other question you may wish.” Her ads offered a “full $5.00 reading for $1.00” and a “$2.00 reading for 50c.” She offered readings daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at 218 N. Third St., DeKalb. To put those prices in context, The Reliable, at 153 Main St., in the Bodman Building, was selling ladies mohair skirts for $4.25 at the time.

“Noted psychic and magnetic healer” Dr. Marvin’s arrival at the Glidden Hotel in DeKalb was reported on both Sept. 29 and Sept.

30 of 1910. The next year, Mahatma performed at Haish Auditorium.

“Mahatma, the woman of mystery who is the feature act at the Auditorium this week is creating a great deal of excitement and interest among the people of DeKalb,” the Chronicle reported March 16, 1911.

“This is Mahatma’s first visit to this city and she has proven one of the strongest drawing cards that Messrs.

Fox & Eppstein have ever placed on any of their vaudeville bills.”

The article went on to promote a “ladies only” performance on St. Patrick’s Day. “This will be a rare opportunity for the ladies of DeKalb to ask Mahatma questions of a private nature

November 6, 1986 or those questions which they would not have desired to ask and also have them replied to in the presence of gentlemen”.

When Chicago mystic Irene Hughes spoke at the annual ladies night program of the DeKalb County

Industrial Management Club in May 1971, she made a number of specific predictions about the future. Among other matters, Hughes weighed in on the unsolved death of NIU student Donna Doll.

Doll, of Brookfield, was a 21-yearold senior studying Russian at NIU when she died in October 1970. She was last seen leaving her part-time job at Swen Parson Library on campus the evening of Oct. 2, 1970, but never made it home to the rooming house on Lincoln Highway where she lived.

Asked about the case, Hughes said she believed investigators would find the person responsible. Hughes added that she believed Doll’s death was “partially self-induced and that somebody was involved. It was caused by certain chemicals.” In October 1970, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Wilbur Scott announced that investigators had “one prime suspect.” The case remains unsolved. Hughes was also wrong in her predictions about 1972 presidential election (she said Nixon would lose to a Democratic challenger) and the end of the war in Vietnam (she said it would end “shortly after March 1972”).

Psychics also played a part in another high-profile DeKalb County case – the 1976 murder of an unidentified girl whose body was found on a vacant farm near Sycamore. The murder was known for years as the Jane Doe case because the victim hadn’t been identified. Then Sheriff Wilbur Scott had drummed up publicity in the case in an effort to identify the girl. That publicity included a meeting with a psychic arranged at the behest of a weekly magazine.

(In 1989, Jane Doe was identified as Elizabeth Sue Grabow Angotti).

And then there was Clarence Edward Rum. The Sycamore resident was a psychic, medium and prolific artist. A 1985 feature on Rum in the Chronicle focused on his method of interviewing the dead. He told reporter William Paul Fiefer that he would enter a deep, trancelike state of meditation to talk with 15 dead U.S. Presidents along with Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Charles Darwin, Mark Twain and Jesus Christ.

He took notes on these interviews with pen and paper and later recorded them on cassettes.

In a 1971 dispatch in the Chronicle, Rum predicted that cancer would be cured by 2100. In that year, he said Sycamore would have a population of 25,552 that would be served by five churches, 10 schools and have the lowest tax rate in the state.

Rum died at age 73 in 1986.

These students were selected via audition as members of the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra.

The festival web page states the Chicago Youth in Music Festival is a

celebration of young classical musicians from across greater Chicago. It is presented by the Negaunee Music Institute at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in partnership with the city’s leading community music schools and youth orchestra programs.

Artistic leadership is by Chicago Symphony Orchestra Music Director Riccardo Muti, Judson and Joyce Green, creative consultant Yo-Yo Ma, Civic Orchestra Principal Conductor Cliff Colnot, musicians of the CSO and

the Civic Fellows of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago.

The Festival Orchestra is an ensemble consisting of two evening rehearsals, sectional rehearsals with Chicago Symphony Orchestra members and culminating with a performance under Maestro Gennady Rozhdestvensky.

Jefferson students march for positivity Jefferson Elementary students were proud to march in the “Parade of Pawsitivity.” They walked through the halls of Jefferson to celebrate the positivity they contribute to the DeKalb school. Students are encouraged to exemplify respect, responsibility and safety. The February parade focused on responsibility. Teachers recognized those who went above and beyond in demonstrating responsibility by nominating them to march in the parade and have their name entered in a raffle.

After a previous parade for respect, a bike was awarded.

Music is effective medical therapy Dear Dr. K: I recently visited a friend in the hospital. During my visit, a music therapist came in and played music for her.

The idea of music therapy seems very New Age to me. Is there any evidence for it?

Dear Reader: Music therapists are accomplished musicians who use their knowledge of music and its effects to help people get through medical challenges, such as recovering from a stroke or healing after surgery. Music therapists may play music for you or with you. They even may teach you how to play an instrument.

This all sounds great. But, as you say, it also sounds pretty New Age, and you asked whether there is any evidence behind it. Actually, there is. A growing body of research attests music therapy can improve medical outcomes and quality of life in a variety of ways.

For example, music therapy: • Improves the experience of invasive procedures. Controlled clinical trials looked at people having colonoscopies, cardiac angiography and knee surgery. Those who listened to music before their procedure had reduced anxiety and a reduced need for sedatives. Those who listened to music in the operating room reported less discomfort during their procedure. Hearing music in the recovery room reduced the use of opioid painkillers.

• Restores lost speech. Stroke or traumatic brain injury can damage the region on the left side of the brain that is responsible for speech. Music therapy can help.

• Improves quality of life for dementia patients. The ability to engage with music remains intact into the later stages of dementia. Music therapy can help to recall memories, reduce agitation, assist communication and improve physical coordination. A wonderful documentary film released in 2014, “Alive Inside: A Story of Music and Memory,” demonstrates the value music can have in awakening memory among people with dementia. It is a memorable experience to see people who appear terminally lost to the world, barely able to communicate in words, come alive to music.

Most of the studies I refer to have used classical music and popular songs. I’m not aware of any studies using newer forms of popular music, such as punk, rap or heavy metal. Do they, too, relieve anxiety, promote wound healing and help restore speech and memory? Call me old-fashioned, but I doubt it.

In today’s deal from Steve Conrad of Manhasset, New York, South is in three no-trump, faced with finesses in three suits. What is his optimum strategy?

This is the most common auction of all, leading to the most popular contract. But what is the least common contract?

South starts with five top tricks: one spade, two hearts, one diamond and one club. If both black-suit finesses are working, that would get his winner total up to nine. Or if both diamond honors are onside, that would also be good enough. But if a finesse loses, the defenders will presumably establish West’s heart suit.

Then, if West can regain the lead, he might cash too many tricks for declarer.

That suggests starting with the spade finesse, because the spade king is West’s only possible entry. But getting to the dummy for that finesse introduces other complications.

Much simpler is to take two diamond finesses. The first loses to East’s jack and a heart comes back, but South ducks that, wins the next heart, then -- key play -- runs the club queen. (Agreed, if declarer deduces who has which kings, this isn’t necessary, but it avoids guesswork.)

East takes that trick and shifts to a spade, but declarer wins with his ace, repeats the diamond finesse, and has nine tricks from one spade, two hearts, four diamonds and two clubs.

The least common contract is five no-trump, which has all of the risk for no gain.
