Stop messing with the clocks We need to end daylight saving time.

If we pull together, we can do it.

Daylight saving is a government program that is not only a literal waste of time, but also one that messes with the dayto-day life of every American in one of the 48 states that observe it.

On Sunday, 2 a.m. will immediately become 3 a.m. and the vast majority of us who will be sleeping at that time will be expected to just wake up and go about our business like nothing happened. After we go around our house and reset all the clocks, provided we remember to do that.

On Monday, those of us with day jobs will probably wake up tired. Our children will take days to adjust and in between they will be cranky, which at my house means even more fighting over bathroom time before school. (I swear, if my bathroom was 50 yards long, my daughters would fight over the same 5 feet of it.)

And for what? So we can pat ourselves on the back for some overestimated energy savings and creating an “extra” hour of sunlight at the end of a 9-to-5 workday?

There is no such thing as “extra” daylight, just as there’s no such thing as a free lunch.

The length of the day is the same. When we monkey with the clocks, we all have to pay the price for it.

This is a remnant of the 20th century that needs to go away.

Nobody even seems to understand the point of the exercise any more.

Let’s make this the last spring where we all show up sleep-deprived at work on

Monday and aren’t hungry at lunchtime.

We’re going to elect a new president in November, and I’ll say right now, anyone who says they’ll end daylight saving time will get my vote, even if they’re Ted Cruz.

If we can’t get some national consensus on ending this nonsense, then let’s get Illinois to opt out. Our lawmakers should be able to get behind this – it’s one more thing they can do other than actually pass a budget.

Illinois can just be on “mountain time” in the winter.

If we do it, Wisconsin will too, and once you’ve got the Badgers behind you, the Minnesotans will follow, and at least Northwest Indiana ... it’ll be a movement.

It’s time to stop messing with everyone’s lives for no reason.

50 Cent: Secret Service asking about ‘prop’ money The ASSOCIATED PRESS HARTFORD, Conn. – He’s already explained himself to a bankruptcy court judge, but 50 Cent says the Secret Service is now asking about the wads of “prop” money he used in social media posts.

The rapper, whose name is Curtis Jackson III, wrote in an Instagram post Thursday night that the Secret Service has asked if the fake money was counterfeited. Making his point with a couple expletives, 50 Cent says he doesn’t know.

Secret Service officials and 50 Cent’s lawyers and repre-

sentatives didn’t return messages seeking comment Friday.

50 Cent was ordered to appear in bankruptcy court in Hartford on Wednesday, after the judge and U.S. trustee’s office raised questions about his finances, including what looked like cash bundles in his Instagram photos. The pictures included ones of him sitting next to piles of cash arranged to spell “broke,” him in a bed with wads of cash and cash stacks in a refrigerator.

Lawyers for the rapper told Judge Ann Nevins on Wednesday that the cash was fake and

used only as marketing props, and they denied suggestions he wasn’t fully reporting his assets. The U.S. trustee’s office is asking Nevins to appoint an independent examiner to review the entertainer’s finances.

The rapper, who burst onto the music scene in 2003 with his debut album, “Get Rich or Die Tryin,” has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization, citing debts of $36 million and assets of less than $20 million. He and his top creditors have reached a preliminary deal for him to pay at least 74 percent of his debt to them.

Early voting continues through the weekend

By KATIE SMITH ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – More than 2,000 people had voted early in DeKalb County by Friday, and DeKalb’s newest voting site seems to be a success, local election officials said.

For the first time, voters can cast their ballots at the DeKalb Township Building, 2323 S. Fourth St., DeKalb, which has been a convenient and helpful reminder for locals to get out and vote, election judge Steven Nemeth said.

“A lot of folks, especially if you come over to this side of town, they are pleased that this is here,” Nemeth said. “Plus, this is also now going to be a normal precinct or voting place on Election Day.” Voters could have new precinct numbers after a consolidation last summer that resulted from a Senate bill requiring all Illinois counties with a population of more than 100,000 to offer same-day registration and voting on election days. DeKalb County residents should have received updated voter information in the mail, and a list of precincts and polling locations is available at dekalb.il.clerkserve. com.

Polls will be open every day through Tuesday, when more polling stations around the area will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Until Tuesday, there are five early voting sites around the county: DeKalb County Legislative Center, 200 N. Main St., Sycamore; DeKalb Township Building, 2323 S. Fourth St., DeKalb; Northern Illinois University Holmes Student Center; Kirkland Village Hall, 511 W. Main St., Kirkland; and the Sandwich Fire Station, 310 E. Railroad St., Sandwich.

Polls will be open at those locations from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. On Monday, the Sycamore site will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the other sites open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Three early voting centers will be open as election-day registration centers from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday – the DeKalb Township Building, the Holmes Student Center Black Hawk Annex, and the Sycamore Administration Building. To register, voters must provide two forms of ID, one with their current DeKalb County address.

“This is only for people who need to register,” Johnson said. “If you’re already a registered voter, you need to still go to your voting place, your precinct and vote. Once you’re registered at that site then you’re registered at a general election.”

DeKalb couple Pam and John Rogowski knew they wouldn’t have time to vote Tuesday, so they stopped by the DeKalb Township Building on Thursday to vote.

“It’s just easier,” Pam Rogowski said. “It’s more convenient for parking and it’s a closer location. It makes

you want to vote.”

Others have stopped in as a quick, last-minute task on their way to work or out of town, DeKalb County Clerk and Recorder Doug Johnson said.

“That was our goal to have a sign out there and have people drive by and say, ‘Oh, I can do this,’ ” Johnson said.

After controversial assembly, DeKalb school board wants principal to resign

ra Ropeter on paid administrative leave after a controversial Black Student Union assembly on Feb. 24 drew extensive parent criticism and rumors of violent threats. Superintendent Doug Moeller has taken

over as principal in Ropeter’s absence.

The day after the assembly, Moeller said that Ropeter was out because of a scheduled absence. Two days afterward, on Feb. 26, he wrote in a letter to District 428 parents that Ropeter would be out for the rest of the school year.

“In the midst of the challenges faced this week, Tamra Ropeter, DeKalb

High School principal, is taking a leave of absence for the rest of the school year to address personal matters,” Moeller wrote in a letter to parents. “The district wishes Ms. Ropeter the best, and thanks her for her commitment to DHS the past four years.”

OBITUARIES DOROTHEA L. BARTH

Born: Aug. 5, 1962; in Elmhurst, IL Died: March 1, 2016; in DeKalb, IL Dorothea Luise “Dorothy” Barth, 53, of DeKalb, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at home.

Born August 5, 1962, in Elmhurst, the daughter of William J. and Marion L. (Lederer) Moore, Dorothy married John Francis Barth on October 20, 1990, in West Chicago.

Dorothy was owner of a house-cleaning service for more than 20 years. She was a member of DeKalb Moose, and of American Legion Post 66, where she served as vice president for several years.

She is survived by her husband, John; children, David Joyce, Lucas Barth and Sam Barth, all of DeKalb; grandchildren, Dominick Joyce and Declan Joyce; mother, Marion Moore of Shabbona; brother, David (Debbie) Moore of Carol Stream; sisters, Katherine (Randy) Adams of Jacksonville, Florida, and Amanda (Andres) Umana of Shabbona; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father and an infant daughter, Marissa.

The memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m.

Saturday, March 19, at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb, with Pastor Nicolas Ticona of Christ Lives Church, Sycamore, officiating. Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date at Ohio Grove Cemetery, rural Sycamore. Cremation is by Anderson Funeral Home Crematory.

WILLIAM ROLAND DAWSON Born: Jan. 9, 1930 Died: March 10, 2016

William Roland Dawson, 86, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Thursday, March 10, 2016, at home due to complications of colon cancer.

Born January 9, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of John L. and Violet E. (Trumphour) Dawson, William married Muriel Ann Layton in January 1954 and was happily married to her for 53 years.

William graduated from Case Western Reserve University, formerly the Case Institute of Technology, in Cleveland, Ohio with a Ph.D in Chemistry. He subsequently worked at TRW and Sherwin Williams as a research chemist, with several patents to his name. William was a loving husband and father and an inveterate volunteer.

He volunteered to advance the interests of the blind through the Lions Club and recording for the blind. Most recently he volunteered at Habitat for Humanity in DeKalb. He loved keeping active through running and gardening, and was continuously learning. William was a lovely man, who approached life with humor and fortitude, and an attitude of respect and kindness to those he knew and met.

DeKalb County Habitat for Humanity to join Fairdale recovery More than 20 homes have been restored and 14 new housing starts have begun since the disaster, officials said.

About four homes are undergoing reconstruction and work on another is to begin in the next few weeks, said Bill Nicklas, vice president of the DeKalb County Long Term Recovery Corp.

“It’s very encouraging,” he said.

“It’s looking pretty good, but there are still a couple that need work.”

Habitat for Humanity has commit-

ted to rebuild at least one home and may help on reconstruction with several others, Nicklas said.

“The intent is to get started with excavation in the spring,” he said. “And be done by the time school gets back, in the fall.”

When recovery efforts first began, the long-term recovery group worked with the Habitat for Humanity chapter in Rockford.

“It was a rewarding relationship, but they were stretched a little bit,”

Nicklas said. “The DeKalb chapter has kind of reconstituted itself, but now its very dynamic and they want to work with us.”

Anthony Cvek, president of the Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County board, said he was glad his group would be working on the recovery effort.

“We want to be successful in our commitment,” he said in a news release. “And we know the corporation has delivered.”

Others seemed more concerned about the aftermath than the content of the assembly.

By BRETT ROWLAND browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A 71-year-old Hinckley sex offender could spend the rest of his life in prison after a jury found him guilty of 12 counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.

After a three-day trial, the jury deliberated for about two hours before returning with 12 guilty verdicts on Thursday for Ival Miles, 71, of Hinckley, according to a news release from DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack.

Court records show Miles was a sex offender who was convicted in May 2011 of being near H.E. Dummer School in Sandwich.

He was sentenced to 2∏ years’ probation, according to court records.

For some reason, Miles wasn’t required to register as a sex offender, so he wasn’t listed on Illinois’ Sex Offender Registry at the time.

Miles also was convicted in 1995 of aggravated criminal sexual abuse for abusing a child in 1986; he was sentenced to 270 days in prison and four years of probation, police previously told the Daily Chronicle.

arrested Miles in 2014 after the victim reported the abuse to police. The victim, who is now an adult, was younger than 13 at the time. She told police she was abused for about nine years.

Prosecutors had offered Miles a deal that would have sentenced him to 10 years in prison and sparred the victim from testifying, but Miles rejected the offer, Schmack said.

A sentencing hearing is set for April 26. Because consecutive sentences are mandatory for the Class X felonies, Miles faces a minimum sentence of 72 years, Schmack said.

People may be living longer, but they’re not necessarily living better. Even though an overwhelming majority, 94 percent, of baby boomers know what it takes to live a healthy life, three-quarters concede they should be doing more to manage their health, according to a new study.

Also, America’s aging population is expected to live longer with higher rates of chronic illness, which can lead to diminished quality of life.

“The marvel of modern medicine has created a complacency” among people who believe they can continue to embrace unhealthy habits and a trip to the doctor will solve almost any issue they face, said Dr. Bernard Kaminetsky, medical director of MDVIP, which authorized the study by the independent market research firm Ipsos Public Affairs.

“The only solution is prevention,” Kaminetsky said.

“The fact is that once you have a chronic disease like diabetes or cardiovascular disease, you’ve got it. You can’t prevent it anymore, only manage it.”

It sounds like the elements for a spy movie, but it’s become a hallmark of the undercover process for considering potential Supreme Court nominees.

The Obama administration is close to naming a replacement for Justice Antonin Scalia, who died last month and would have turned 80 Friday. An announcement is expected soon, although whether a nominee can be confirmed by the Senate is in doubt. The Senate’s majority Republicans said the seat should be filled not by Obama, but by his successor.

If history is a guide, the White House will take elaborate precautions to make sure the choice for the lifetime seat is kept under wraps until the president is ready to reveal it.

Back in 2005, Samuel Alito was an appeals court judge based in New Jersey when he was summoned to Washington for a Saturday interview with President George W. Bush.

“I checked into a hotel downtown, and they said that I ... should go to a particular corner at a particular time in the morning and wait for a Chrysler 300 to pull up, flash its headlights a couple of times, and then I was to get in this car,” he told Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol in an interview last year.

“So I felt like a spy,” Alito said. “But they wanted to make sure that media didn’t get any word about people who were being interviewed.”

The meeting took place in the president’s private upstairs living quarters, away from the eyes of reporters and White House staff.

President Barack Obama’s search appears to be focused on a small group of appellate court judges with a history of bipartisan backing. The investigation into a candidate’s background is usually headed by high-level Justice Department officials and White House aides. It can take days, weeks or months, depending on how quickly White House wants to act. In some cases, the White House already has a short list of potential nominees ready to go.

That was the case with Clarence Thomas. He got a call from White House Counsel C. Boyden Gray on the same day Justice Thurgood Marshall announced his retirement. Soon, Thomas was standing across the street from the federal courthouse, where he was an appellate judge, waiting to catch a ride to the Justice Department.

“Within a few minutes, I was seated at a conference table in the Justice Department’s situation room, which is soundproofed so thickly that your words seem to die as soon as you say them out loud,” Thomas wrote in his memoir, “My Grandfather’s Son.” Thomas said he was quizzed by Attorney General Richard Thornburgh and other senior Justice Department officials with questions such as who his favorite Supreme Court member was. His answer: Scalia.

A few days later, President George H.W. Bush called Thomas to invite him to the presidential retreat in Kennebunkport, Maine, to discuss the possibility of a high court nomination.

Campaigning with no state budget in place Thumbs-down: To a recess for the state House of Representatives.

After a session in which there was no perceptible progress made toward passing a budget for the state of Illinois, House Speaker Michael Madigan and the rest of the representatives left the capital on recess until April 4 this week.

Even if representatives facing challenges – including Madigan himself – need time to do last-minute campaigning, there’s no excuse for them not to return to Springfield after the election is over March 15.

It’s ridiculous for our state’s politicians to go on an extended recess when they have yet to fulfill their duties. Get back to Springfield and do your jobs, please.

Thumbs-down: To tuition hikes and job losses at Kishwaukee College.

This has been a difficult week for the college, its students and its employees.

The college board this week approved both the layoffs of 24 employees and increase tuition by $10 a credit hour beginning in the summer semester.

The college expects a 50 percent reduction in state aid in the coming fiscal year, and hasn’t received any state aid this school year.

The college also is seeing declining enrollment. These have been difficult decisions, and the college now needs to find a way to continue with its mission.

Thumbs-down: To more financial woes at Feed’em Soup.

The soup kitchen, which has been preparing meals for people on a pay-as-you-can basis since 2010, says that due to the loss of a major catering contract, it may be in danger of closing its doors.

They have done good and useful work in the DeKalb community for years and we hope that they are able to overcome the present difficulty; if that should not happen, we thank those who have served so many meals to those in need.

Thumbs-up: To challenging Speaker Michael Madigan on his home turf.

Jason Gonzales is running against Madigan, who has been a state representative for 45 years, in the 22nd District on Chicago’s Southwest side.

In turn, two other candidates with Latino surnames filed to run at the last minute, although neither of them have made any kind of candidacy. Meanwhile, Madigan, who is the head of the state’s Democratic Party as well as the state’s longest tenured speaker, will at least have to defend himself. While we have no doubt Madigan will succeed, at least he will face some shadow of accountability as the state continues to have no budget more than eight months after one was due.

Thumbs-up: To more civility during the Republican presidential debate on Thursday. Perhaps the candidates woke up to the fact that their prime-time antics were making American democracy look bad. Maybe they just came to the realization that crass attacks were a turnoff for the electorate. Whatever did the trick, all four remaining candidates came off much better.

To the Editor: The DeKalb state’s attorney Republican primary debate sponsored by the NIU College Republicans offered voters an informative exchange of views. Although the differences between the contenders were made clear, the most important differences brought to light were between any of these three and State’s Attorney Richard Schmack.

The candidates impressed upon voters the ways they’d improve upon Schmack’s tenure: increased engagement with and accountability to the community, more collaboration with and support of local police forces, and increased focus on the successful and timely prosecution of serious crimes.

In these ways, the Republican candidates made persuasive cases that they’d substantially improve upon the incumbent Democrat.

This isn’t to say that there aren’t important differences between the three Republican candidates. Charles Rea emphasized his experience – an area in which he makes a persuasive claim of superiority – as well as his plan to place two assistant state’s attorneys at the DeKalb Police Department and one at NIU. Clay Campbell also touted quite lengthy experience and expressed a sense of duty to accomplish unfinished business from

He objected only to the act’s ban on private discrimination. Rand was right to object. If owners of a private business want to serve only gays, basketball players or bald men, that should be their right.

Market competition will punish bigots for their narrow-mindedness, because some people will avoid that store.

There’s no need for government force.

“Right,” said Taylor, but “5 percent of the American public says yes to that, and 95 percent say no. ... They’re not going to embrace a candidate who says, tough, people should just suffer under the teeth of bigotry because white people have that right.”

Taylor is fine with welfare spending, too. He points out, “Even people like

his previous stint in the office. Rick Amato countered charges of relative inexperience by highlighting his experience running and growing his legal practice, as well as the endorsements he has received from law enforcement.

There were several notable exchanges throughout the debate. When asked about the enforcement of marijuana laws, Campbell argued that cases involving these crimes shouldn’t always be prosecuted, to which Rea countered “we aren’t the legislature,” and that all applicable laws need to be enforced.

Campbell, in response to Amato’s statement that police need to be protected, asserted that the state’s attorney is responsible for protecting the entire community.

Each candidate presented himself well, leaving the voters a difficult decision. Rea’s verbosity, age and experience contrasted with Amato’s brevity, relative youth and energy, with Campbell sometimes acting as diplomatic mediator between the two.

Although Campbell acquitted himself well, he seemed to fall short of the energy and conviction his opponents showed. And Rea, for all of his admirable conviction and experience, often had difficulty expressing himself concisely and was occasionally unfair in his remarks regarding his opponents.

To this observer, then, Amato emerged victorious from the debate in a close contest. He’ll need to continue to counter charges of inexperience, and he’ll need to persuade the community that, as Campbell effectively pointed out, the state’s attorney

Taylor and some other libertarians sound like “reform Republicans” who want free-market advocates to embrace the welfare state. They think they’re being practical, realistic.

But we free-market supporters know what really creates prosperity and opportunity: economic freedom! We saw it work in America when America was young. We see it now in Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, Switzerland, Australia and other countries that today offer more economic freedom than the U.S. Government that governs least governs best.

Government today takes half our money and micromanages the workplace.

But Taylor criticizes libertarians who complain about that and “reflexively” talk about “taxes and spending and regulation. Other things are important too, like war! War is the engine of the growth of the state. Hundreds of thousands of people die.”

All true. We, libertarians, should probably talk less about taxes and more about what we’d do about ISIS and how to help poor people without using government force.

To help us understand more about these ideas, the “Stossel” TV show will host a Libertarian presidential forum.

Three leading Libertarian presidential candidates – “leading” because they placed top three in a poll done by the Libertarian Party – will debate. They are former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, software entrepreneur John McAfee and Libertarian Republic founder Austin Petersen.

The forum will air, unfortunately, on April 1. But this is no April Fools’ Day joke. Our future is a stake.

region, and now our military industrial complex is reaping the benefits as over half of our discretionary spending goes to the military. The Clintons have become wealthy as Washington insiders. She has taken millions of dollars from corporations including big banks, Monsanto, private prisons, you name it. She has promoted fracking and the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

She hoped to run an issueless campaign, but with Sanders pushing her, she has had to address policy. Sanders is promoting real change, the sort that America desperately needs.

We have nearly 50 percent of the U.S. population living near or below the poverty level. Our corrupted campaign laws have enabled wealthy corporate interests to elect politicians who further the agenda of corporate America at the expense of citizens. Taxes on the wealthy individuals and the effective taxes on some of the most profitable corporations are at historic lows.

Don’t tell me that it is dangerous to end the tax inversions, the outsourcing of American jobs, to close the tax loopholes for the wealthiest Americans. To say that Bernie Sanders’ proposals are dangerous is nonsense. To continue on our failed path regarding income inequality, militarism and climate change may be suicidal.

Sanders is by far the best choice for America, as the Republican field is filled with what I believe can only be described as “clowns.”

In this year’s Republican presidential primaries, Sen. Rand Paul got little traction. In 2012, his father failed. That year, the Libertarian Party candidate, former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, got just 1 percent of the vote.

We libertarians must be doing something wrong. Maybe our anti-government message is too radical, says Jerry Taylor. Maybe we should soften our approach.

“Libertarians need to be more realistic,” Taylor told 500 young people at a taping of my TV show at last week’s International Students for Liberty conference. In electoral politics, he said, finding libertarians is “like trying to find a daisy in Hiroshima” after the nuclear blast.

Taylor, a smart libertarian who runs a think tank called the Niskanen Center, says to become more popular, we libertarians ought to change our views.

He criticized Rand Paul for saying that in 1964 he would’ve voted against the Civil Rights Act. Actually, Rand didn’t say

Josie Diehl leads Indian Creek to 3rd-place state finish, named POY

By JESSE SEVERSON jseverson@shawmedia.com SHABBONA – The Indian Creek girls basketball team found itself trailing in a pair of games in a Christmas tournament earlier this season.

However, the Timberwolves came back to win both games – edging Ottawa Marquette, 48-44, and Ashton-Franklin Center, 59-49. That’s when senior center Josie Diehl knew the Timberwolves could have a special season.

“From the beginning, we always knew we’d be good,” said Diehl, who is the 2015-16 Daily Chronicle Girls Basketball Player of the Year. “After we won the Christmas tournament, that’s when everybody realized we were going to do something good.”

The Timberwolves finished the season 32-2 – easily the best mark in

school history – and took third place at Class 1A and a major reason was the 6-foot-2 Diehl. She finished as the team leader in points (14.4) and rebounds (10.6) and was the all-time leading rebounder (1,146) and is third in team history in scoring (1,366).

With Diehl drawing extra attention from opposing defenses, it opened things up for her teammates, Indian Creek coach Paul Muchmore said.

“They get good looks and I think some girls took advantage of it,” he said. “When we do get her the ball and she gets double-teamed, she’s good at finding the open person.”

Muchmore also said the Christmas tournament was a turning point for the Timberwolves. In the final game against Ashton-Franklin Center, Diehl led the Timberwolves with 15 points and eight rebounds.

“We learned to play from behind

and not panic and keep playing,” Muchmore said.

That mentality helped the Timberwolves during postseason play, in which they trailed in the Gardner-South Wilmington Regional final against Newark, the Serena Sectional final against Annawan and the Supersectional against Galena.

All three times, the Timberwolves rallied to win.

“I was getting double-teamed some (during the season) but it’s hard because we had players like MaKayli (Vann), Madison (Russell) and Alexis (VanWhye) that could also score,” Diehl said.

Once mainly a rebounder as a freshman for the Timberwolves, Diehl blossomed into a dual-threat – being able to knock down the outside shot, as well as pound teams inside. Perhaps her finest performance in a season

full of them came in the championship game of the Little Ten Conference tournament against Serena. Diehl finished with 27 points and 14 rebounds in a dramatic 52-49 victory.

“That’s what I always saw in her – the ability to shoot from the outside and ability to drive to the basket and pass the ball,” Muchmore said.

In her final game with Indian Creek, Diehl had a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds while shooting 6 for 12 from the field with three blocks in the Timberwolves’ 56-50 win over Seton Academy in the third-place game at state.

It was a dramatic end to an incredible run by the Timberwolves, which drew the positive attention from the community.

“Seeing the entire community rally around us, it was a lot of fun,” Diehl said.

DALLAS – Jason Spezza scored in his fifth straight game, Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn ended goal-scoring slumps and the Dallas Stars regained the Western Conference lead by beating the Blackhawks, 5-2, Friday night.

Dallas improved to 41-20-8 with 90 points, two more than Central Division-rival Hawks and three more than third-place St. Louis. Each team has 13 games remaining.

Kari Lehtonen made 21 saves for the Stars, who are 3-0-1 in their past four games. Antoine Roussel and Ales Hemsky also scored.

Teuvo Teravainen and Tomas Fleischmann scored for the Hawks.

Benn’s power-play goal at 10:42 of the second gave Dallas a 4-0 lead.

Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville then removed Corey Crawford, who had 16 saves. Scott Darling finished with 10 saves. He was pulled for an extra skater with 8:10 to play and returned after Ales Hemsky’s empty-net

goal with 4:31 left.

Spezza scored his fourth power-play goal in the past five games. He has eight goals, six on the power play, in the last nine games.

Spezza assisted on Seguin’s goal, which ended a streak of six games without one. Benn had not scored in the previous seven. Benn and Hemsky each had a goal and an assist.

The Hawks have allowed 16 goals on the power play in the past 13 games.

Dallas defenseman Stephen Johns made his NHL debut because of injuries to John Klingberg, Jordie Benn and Jason Demers. During the offseason, the Hawks traded Johns and forward Patrick Sharp to the Stars.

Sharp also missed this game because of injury.

The Stars scored on their first power play after killing consecutive penalties for 3:53. Jamie Benn passed from the right point along the blue line to Spezza above the slot. He sent a wrist shot into the lower left corner of the net at 11:08 of the first period.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR Josie Diehl, sr., C, Indian Creek FIRST TEAM Julie Galauner, jr., G, Genoa-Kingston: Galauner averaged 15.3 points per game and set a school record by making 85.14 percent of her free throws this year. She also is the school record holder in 3-pointers made in a season and career – with a year left to boot. She also has the school assist record for game, season and career. She averaged three assists per game and 4.5 rebounds.

Lauren Goff, sr., G, Sycamore: Goff started for four years for the Spartans at point guard, helping Sycamore win 81 games in that stretch. She averaged 8.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists and was the team’s top defender.

MaKayli Vann, soph., G, Indian Creek: Playing point guard for the team that took third in Class 1A, Vann averaged 12.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game for the Timberwolves. She started the year at shooting guard but made the transition to point guard as early in the season.

Camri Conley, sr., G, Kaneland: Conley averaged 10 points, four rebounds and four assists per game and was a strong defender for the Knights.

Taiya Hopkins, sr., F/C, Sycamore: Another four-year starter for the Spartans, she averaged 8.7 points and 5.2 rebounds while shooting 53.2 percent from the floor and 82 percent from the free throw line.

Lewis, others particpate in Pro Day workouts in front of NFL scouts

By JESSE SEVERSON jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The magnitude of the sprint wasn’t lost on Tommylee Lewis.

The former Northern Illinois football star joined a handful of Huskies as part of the school’s Pro Day on Friday afternoon at the Chessick Center, with about a dozen NFL scouts watching with stopwatches while the speedy receiver did his 40-yard dash.

“I call it a life-changing 40 yards,” Lewis said with a laugh.

Lewis, who missed time his senior year dealing with an ankle injury and a sprained knee, ran a team-best 4.5 in the 40 and had the longest broad jump with 10 feet. Defensive lineman Ben Compton had the most reps in the 225-pound bench press with 29.

Fellow receiver Juwan Brescacin also came away pleased with his day – finishing with a team-best mark of 361/2 feet in the vertical jump and ran a 4.62 in the 40-yard dash and had nine reps of the bench.

“After going through five years of college football, your body starts to feel old,” said Brescacin, who had 24 catches for 298 yards and a touchdown last season. “But where I trained at, they did a good job of breaking me down and building me back up and keeping in balance. Coming in here, I felt pretty fresh and explosive. The biggest thing was catching all my footballs, and I did that. I was told I looked pretty smooth in my routes. I’m happy.”

Before his 40-yard dash, Brescacin slowly got ready – calmly tying his shoe before methodically dropping into a stance.

While the silence that comes before the events of Pro Day is unusual, Brescacin said it wasn’t anything compared to the big games the Huskies played in during his tenure.

“We’re just so used to performing under pressure,” he said. “The quiet is a little different than what you’re used to, but it’s just you and what you need to focus on. If you relax, you’re going to be fine. I didn’t want to rush anything because I wasn’t racing anybody. It was just me and the 40. I was making sure everything was comfortable and took a few breaths to relax my adrenaline. I knew the 40 was an important part.”

Linebacker Boomer Mays, who led the Huskies with 114 tackles last season, said he did well during the events – which featured positional drills along with the 40-yard dash, broad jump and shuttle runs.

“There’s not really pressure because when you play a game, you prepare and practice for it – just like this,” Mays said. “I’ve been preparing for months, so it’s showtime, let’s do this.”

The lineup of players during the Pro Day consisted of seniors from last year’s team, along with linebacker Rasheen Lemon, running back Cameron Stingily and safety Dechane Durante.

Northern Illinois lost a heartbreaker and crushed their way to a win in the opening day of a tournament Friday at North Carolina State.

The Huskies lost, 6-5, to Delaware State in nine innings, then beat Loyola, 10-6.

Huskies baseball defeats Belmont

Freshman William Anderson pitched six strong innings and the Northern Illinois baseball team beat Belmont, 4-1, Friday.

Anderson (1-1) picked up his first collegiate win by allowing seven hits and one run while striking out two. Ryne Blanton earned the save by throwing three scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out four.

The receivers also caught passes from former Huskies quarterback Chandler Harnish, who also threw passes during last year’s Pro Day. While the players said the goal was to be selected in the three-day NFL Draft that begins April 28, they said they would gladly take offers from other football leagues.

“I love the game, so if it’s NFL, CFL,

as long as I can ball, I’ll be fine,” Lewis said.

Being from the Toronto area, Brescacin has an advantage when it comes to the CFL, which slates 21 of the 44 players on a roster for Canadians citizens.

“I grew up watching the CFL, so I have a lot of respect for that league and I think it’s growing, but my dream has always been to go to the NFL,” Brescacin said. “If it happens that I played in the CFL, I’d be just as happy.”

CHICAGO – Goran Dragic scored a season-high 26 points, Josh Richardson added a career-high 22 and the Miami Heat used a big fourth quarter to beat the short-handed Bulls, 118-96, Friday night.

Luol Deng scored 19 points for the Heat, who outscored the Bulls 34-15 in the final quarter on the way to their sixth win in seven games.

Pau Gasol led the Bulls with 17 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists.

Justin Holiday scored a season-high 14 points, but the Bulls came up short on a night guards Derrick Rose and Jimmy Butler sat with injuries.

The Bulls lost their second straight and missed a chance to move into the final Eastern Conference playoff spot after Detroit lost at Charlotte.

The Heat, who snapped a five-game winning streak Wednesday at Milwaukee, trailed, 58-54, at halftime against the Bulls. However, Dragic scored the first three points of a 6-0 run late in third quarter to give Miami the lead for good.

Natural sleep aids not very effective

Dear Dr. K: I’m 71 years old and have trouble sleeping. I don’t want to take sleep drugs, but I’m interested in supplements and natural treatments. Do they work?

Dear Reader: I understand your concern about conventional sleep medicines. Several widely used medicines have been discovered to have important side effects years after they first were approved for use.

However, many supplements and “natural” treatments also can cause side effects.

And there has not been a lot of research done to test how effective they are in the many different kinds of sleep disorders that people can have.

The most commonly used herbal sleep aid is valerian root. Some studies suggest it is mildly sedating and can help people fall asleep and improve their sleep quality. But the evidence is mixed.

An analysis of multiple studies of valerian’s effect on sleep published in 2010 concluded people fell asleep only about a minute sooner than with a sugar pill. There also is some risk of liver damage from valerian, and some women report headaches after using the herb. I’m not aware of good studies of the long-term use of valerian.

Finally, while the U.S. Food and Drug Administration monitors how conventional medicines are manufactured, it has no authority from Congress to do that for supplements. In fact, impurities have been found in some herbal preparations that are available over-the-counter. For all these reasons, I don’t recommend valerian.

Another popular natural sleep aid is melatonin, which is a hormone made in the brain. It influences body temperature, sleep and daily body rhythms (circadian

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff rhythms). The question is whether melatonin taken as a pill can help with sleep.

For most types of sleep problems, I don’t think melatonin has been shown in scientific studies to help sleep.

But one condition where melatonin may help sleep is in older adults, like you.

People older than 60 with insomnia often have lower levels of nighttime melatonin (as measured in the urine) than those without insomnia. Some studies have found such people may sleep better if they take melatonin supplements.

Acupressure appears promising. In acupressure, pressure is placed on acupuncture points without needles.

Tai chi and yoga may help you fall asleep faster and improve your quality of sleep.

Both have the added benefits of promoting mental relaxation as well as muscle relaxation. Meditation may help as a calming and relaxing technique as well.

You also can try drinking a cup of chamomile tea before bed. This age-old home remedy appears to help people relax and become drowsy. Chamomile is both mild and safe.

(But avoid it if you’re allergic to plants in the daisy family.)
