Indian Creek has tremendous support POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS They had a big lead.

They lost it.

They got it back.

But in the end, the Indian Creek girls basketball team lost, 34-31, to Moweaqua Central A&M in a Class 1A state semifinal at Redbird Arena in Normal.

The game was a back-and-forth thriller, with Indian Creek leading through the first three-plus quarters, including by as much as 11.

Then the Raiders seemed to take control, but a couple big buckets – a layup by MaKayli Vann and a 3-pointer by Madison Russell – kept the Timberwolves in the contest for a berth in the state championship game.

In the end, they couldn’t get the play they needed and came out on the wrong side of the great game.

The crowd at Redbird Arena helped make the game what it was.

The Indian Creek crowd – with fans from Shabbona, Lee, Waterman and surrounding areas – was loud and raucous for most of the

The Central A&M crowd was out of it for most of the game – or maybe it just seemed that way sitting directly in front of the IC section – but Raider nation came alive around the time the Raiders took their first lead in the fourth quarter.

Now Indian Creek looks for a third-place finish in the state with a win over Seton Academy at noon today.

Granted, the Timberwolves aren’t playing for a title, but I’d imagine the Indian Creek section will be just as powerful today as it was Friday.

TRUMP WINS CHRISTIE ENDORSEMENT FORT WORTH, Texas – New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Friday endorsed GOP front-runner Donald Trump, delivering a surprise and powerful boost to the billionaire businessman, whom he called the best Republican candidate to lead the country and beat Democrat Hillary Clinton.

“I’ve gotten to know all the people on that stage and there is none who is better prepared to provide America with the strong leadership that it needs both at home and around the world than Donald Trump,” Christie said at a news conference in Texas. Reporters were visibly stunned when he walked into the room.

“I can guarantee you that the one person that Hillary and Bill Clinton do not want to see on that stage come next September is Donald Trump,” said Christie. Story, page 17.

DeKalb police said Friday that they have arrested a 60-year-old DeKalb man on child pornography charges. An officer with the Illinois Crimes against Children Task Force learned that child pornography had been distributed from the home of Juan Vargas in the 400 block of Colonial Drive between Nov. 23 and Dec. 16. Police searched the home and found child porn on a computer as well as other evidence, such as additional hard drives, DeKalb police Cmdr.

Not all who relied on shuttered adult day care service were low-income Note to readers: This is the fourth installment in an occasional series about the effect of Illinois’ budget crisis on the state and its people.

By RHONDA GILLESPIE rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Bennetta Stearnes already was reeling from her husband’s Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis when the closure of a local adult day care center forced her into the role of his sole caregiver.

“It is just devastating because when you are the caregiver and have to arrange your life around having some care for the [one you’re caring for], you really, really do need some place that you can count on to take them,” said Stearnes, an 81-year-old Northern Illinois University retiree who lives in DeKalb with her husband, Bob, 83.

Although many of those who have been hurt by the loss of social services have been low-income people, some families in better financial shape, such as the Stearnes family and that of DeKalb Mayor John Rey, also have been affected.

Fox Valley Older Adult Services shut the doors on its DeKalb day care center in October because of a lack of funds. Of the agency’s $1.75 million budget, 80 percent was state-funded, according to Cynthia Worsley, FVOAS executive director.

“We simply didn’t have enough money to continue paying, and we didn’t have enough clients,” Worsley said of why the day care center closed.

“For a long time, we had absorbed that loss.”

The nonprofit also shuttered its Aurora location, and Worsley said at least a dozen workers lost their jobs.

Even more seniors in need of services were displaced.

The adult day care center was the place where Bennetta Stearnes felt comfortable leaving her husband, a retired physical education teacher and entrepreneur, two to three days a week so she could do things such as run errands and attend doctor’s appointments.

Stearnes said the activities Bob Stearnes participated in there were “stimulating for anyone who has mental deficiencies” – especially Alzheimer’s. Worsley added that the center also served people with such

Now, Stearnes takes her husband with her on errands. With the disease, he can’t be left home alone.

DeKalb’s Mayor Rey doesn’t have the option of taking his wife, Marge, with him as he conducts city business.

Marge has Alzheimer’s as well, and the mayor also depended on the day care as a resource.

“It was a critical service during the week,” Rey said. Marge Rey, 73, attended the day care three to four days a week, from January 2014 until it closed, the mayor recalled.

2 DeKalb teens held on $500K bond 1 suspect in shooting was arrested in January for making gun threats

By BRITTANY KEEPERMAN bkeeperman@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A judge set bond at $500,000 each for two DeKalb teens charged in connection with a shooting Thursday that sent two people to the hospital.

Police said Friday that Scott K. Brewer, 16, of DeKalb, was the person who pulled the trigger in an afternoon shooting Thursday at 10th and Pleasant streets that sent two people to the hospital. He is being charged as an adult with aggravated battery with a firearm and mob action and is being held at the Kane County Juvenile Detention Center, police said.

Christian Contreras, 19, of the 200 block of Maplewood Avenue in DeKalb, also is charged with aggravated batChristian tery with a firearm and Contreras mob action in connection with the incident.

Contreras is being held in the DeKalb County jail.

If convicted of the most serious charge, aggravated battery with a firearm, both could face at least six to 30 years in prison. The nature of the charges made it mandatory for Brewer to be transferred to adult court, DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack said.

“This is aggravated battery with a firearm, where he personally discharged the firearm,” Schmack said.

“If he were 15 or younger, it would be in juvenile court, but it is a mandatory transfer because of the nature of [the] offense.”

Contreras was arrested not long after the shooting; Brewer was arrested hours later as he walked to his home in DeKalb, according to a police news release. A search of Brewer’s home and turned up an empty ammunition magazine, police said.

Both Brewer and Contreras have had other recent arrests.

On his Facebook page, Brewer said he had been a student at DeKalb High School. Police said in court Friday that he had been arrested in January for making gun threats at school.

Contreras was arrested Jan. 30 on charges of assault, manufacture or delivery of 10 to 30 grams of marijuana, and being a felon in possession of

The shooting erupted after what witnesses and police described as an argument between two groups of people near 10th and Pleasant. After a short talk, police say Brewer began firing.

Both shooting victims were taken to Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb.

One has been released and one male victim was taken to a Rockford hos-

pital for further treatment, according to the news release.

“His injuries are serious,” DeKalb police Cmdr. Bob Redel said. “But it looks like he is going to make it.”

Redel said police are investigating whether or not the incident was gang-related. Several people involved are known gang members, Redel said.

Brewer’s Facebook page shows a photo of him standing on a corner not far from the site of the shootings, making hand gestures.

Gang members also were involved in attacks that took place earlier this month.

The Pleasant Street neighborhood also has seen other recent gun violence. In October, 23-year-old Matthew Clark of DeKalb was shot and killed just blocks away after what police said was a cocaine deal that went bad. Christopher J. Gerken of Sycamore is charged with murder in connection with that incident.

DeKalb’s targeted crime unit is keeping an eye out for gang activity, Redel said.

“We definitely notice it,” he said.

“And we’re not going to allow it.”

The shootings occurred in broad daylight and there were multiple witnesses. DeKalb police are asking anyone with information to contact detectives at 815-748-8400, or use the “iWatch DeKalb” app on their smartphone.

Born: Feb. 13, 1929; in Strawberry Point, Iowa Died: Jan. 24, 2016; in DeKalb, IL

Tuesday, February 23, 2016, at Kishwaukee Hospital, DeKalb.

Born August 29, 1922, in Sandwich, the daughter of Maurice and Alice (Appel) Smith, Elaine married Casper H. “Cap” Kittleson on August 9, 1947, at her parents’ home in Sandwich.

Elaine was head secretary in the history department at Northern Illinois University for nearly 20 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in DeKalb and its United Methodist Women and church choir.

Elaine also enriched Celebration Chorale and many other choirs with her beautiful alto voice. She was a member of DeKalb Women’s Club, DeKalb Farm Bureau and Prime Timers.

She enjoyed going on fishing trips with her family to Minnesota and winter trips to Florida. When she went to potluck meals, people would always scramble to get their portion of Elaine’s rice custard pudding. An avid NIU sports fan, Elaine supported football and girls basketball. She also loved playing pinochle and winning at bingo.

She is survived by her daughter, Lynne (Nicholas) Carter of Elburn; grandsons, Ryan (fiancée, Janine) Carter of Watertown, Connecticut, and Trey (Andrea) Carter of Elburn; great-granddaughter, Abigail; sister, Marjorie (Eugene) Hash of Somonauk; brother, Gerald (Sharon) Smith of Florida; and several nieces and nephews, including Colleen (Tim) Meyer and her daughters, Hillary and Megan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cap, in 1992; parents; brothers, Wendell and James; and sisters, Dorothy Hecathorn and Beverly Kolka.

The memorial service will be held at 3 p.m.

Saturday, March 5, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 830 North Annie Glidden Road, DeKalb, with the Rev. Dr. Blake Richter officiating. Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date at Union Cemetery in rural Lee. Cremation is by Anderson Funeral Home Crematory. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. March 5 at church.

Barbara Jean King, 87, of DeKalb, Illinois, a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 24, 2016.

Barbara was born and raised in Strawberry Point, Iowa, the daughter of George and Lucille Dunfrund. She graduated from Strawberry Point High School in 1945. She attended Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, where she studied business and was a cheerleader for the football team. It was at Cornell where she met and married the love her life, James King, in 1947. They were married for 63 years until his death in 2011.

Barbara made the most of her role as the family matriarch. She loved raising her three boys, supporting and following them in all their activities and sports at DeKalb High School and then at the University of Michigan and Illinois. Barbara found great joy in supporting her grandchildren from grade school through college graduation. Barbara and James took great pride in making the road trips to attend all their high school and college graduations in Illinois, Michigan and New Mexico.

Barbara loved attending sporting events and she was an avid golfer in her own right.

She played in women’s events at the Kishwaukee CC for more than 30 years and she enjoyed playing bridge. She followed the PGA and was big fan of the Jordan era Bulls.

When she wasn’t busy with family matters she worked as a pre-school vision and hearing screener and donated much of her time to the 1st United Methodist Church Women’s Club, NIU University Women’s Club, PEO, and volunteered at the Oak Crest Retirement Center from the time it opened where she became a resident. Barbara spent her life giving to others and she always did it with a smile.

The Reys later decided to move into a local residential facility.

The mayor said the budget logjam has affected multiple of programs, projects and people.

“It’s really becoming a domino effect across the community,” he said.

“I am frustrated with the legislative leaders. The legislators in Springfield aren’t drawn into more serious conversation or compromise.”

In fact, around the same time the day care center closed, some seniors were threatened with not getting meals through the Meals on Wheels

program that the Voluntary Action Center runs. Then, meal delivery to some seniors in the county was reduced to three or four days because of the state budget woes.

Ellen Rogers, VAC executive director, said the organization had received about $80,000 a year from the state for the feeding program.

But funding fell short last fall.

However, VAC was able to restore the scaled-back deliveries, thanks to a community fundraising boost.

Rogers said state money is trickling in now, but the Meals on Wheels program still is faced with providing only Monday through Thursday food deliveries to seniors in rural parts of the county.

It’s been more than four months since the Fox Valley Older Adult Services’ day care closed, but the

state is headed into its ninth month without a spending plan. The budget is the legal tool that authorizes the state to spend money. Some spending, however, has been court-ordered or already is approved with legislation.

Some lawmakers – mostly Democrats – and nonprofit social service leaders have lamented that the poor have borne the brunt of the fallout.

But the Reys’ and Stearnes’ situations show how far beyond socioeconomic status the budget impasse has reached.

They could pay for care, but because of the state’s budget situation, they can’t get the service.

“I feel like seniors have just been deserted by our elected officials,” Worsley said.

incomes, could qualify for subsidies and services through the Illinois Department on Aging. Veronica Vera, the agency spokeswoman, said the state paid out some $1 billion in fiscal 2015 for senior services.

“To date, IDoA has not received reports of any seniors losing services due to the budget impasse,” Vera said of fiscal 2016, which started July 1.

She added that the Meals on Wheels program is fully funded under terms of a consent decree.

“What’s still going on in Springfield is just unconscionable,” Stearnes said. “I do not understand how anybody who realizes that the people that are paying more dearly are the ones that have no voice, no ability to fight back – and they have no other alternative for themselves.”

By ERIC R. OLSON eolson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – DeKalb High School principal Tamra Ropeter will be out for the rest of the year for personal reasons, and the DeKalb School District 428 Board has asked Superintendent Doug Moeller to take over her duties.

In a message to families Friday afternoon, Moeller said he would take over as high school principal in addition to his role as superintendent. He said he could not comment on the reason for Ropeter’s leaving the school where she has been principal the past four school years.

She was out Thursday with a scheduled absence, he said.

“All we know right now is she will not be back this year,” Moeller said.

Tamra Moeller, who was Ropeter principal at the high DeKalb High school for three school School years ending in 2012, principal said that student attendance had improved at the school Friday.

Moeller’s message also addressed recent tensions at the high school after a Black History Month presentation upset some students and led to

rumors about threats of violence at the school.

On Thursday, more than 200 students called in before school even started and many more decided to leave early, he said.

“It was just a revolving door. I was amazed, kids showed up and left,”Moeller said. “… A lot of them said there’s not a lot of kids here, so why should I be here, is what I heard.”

On Friday, there were 332 students out, which was an improvement, Moeller said. He added that Friday was the last day that students would be excused for calling in with vague safety concerns, Moeller said.

In his message, Moeller said every-

thing had gone well at the school the past couple of days.

“Rather than being reactionary about any of the unrest experienced earlier this week, we are determined to view this as a growth opportunity,” he wrote. “The vast majority of our students modeled how to take a controversial situation and learn from it. Next week, we expect to have our teachers use this event as a ‘teachable moment’ with students in their class.

Moeller said officials wanted to wait until next week because attendance still was down and talking about the issue would be easier once emotions had subsided.

By DAILY CHRONICLE news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Bond rating agency Moody’s downgraded Northern Illinois University’s credit rating this week to Baa2, two notches above junk status, as the state’s budget impasse dragged on.

The decision could mean that the university has pay more to borrow money.

“The downgrade reflects expected weakening of operating cash flow and liquidity due to lack of FY 2016 state appropriations resulting from the failure

of the State of Illinois (Baa1 negative) to enact a budget eight months into the fiscal year,” Moody’s said in a news release.

NIU officials said they expected the move, but remain confident the school can handle the financial duress brought on by the loss of millions in state funding.

“We are doing things that under normal circumstances would strengthen our rating,” NIU spokesman Joe King said. “We’re cutting spending on goods and services. We’ve been conservative

on filling positions.”

Over the past 18 months, the university has left about 265 jobs vacant in an effort to cut costs, King said.

The state of Illinois is without a budget and the lack of state funding is putting pressure on public institutions, including NIU. The bond investment rating company has downgraded the university’s rating to Baa2 from Baa1. Officials say the main problem is the budget stalemate in Springfield.

“That’s the bottom line,” King said.

“Nothing [that we’re doing] could over-

come the fact that we have significant debt and a major source of our income isn’t coming in.”

Al Phillips, NIU’s vice president of administration and finance, said that the school wasn’t in the same position as other state universities.

“We are much better positioned,” he said. “Not only are we well positioned, we are well positioned so that when we do get a budget and because we have saved funds and been much more strategic about the way we do things, we can go forward in a much better way.”

DeKalb man facing child pornography charges

DeKALB – DeKalb Police said Friday that they have arrested a 60-year-old DeKalb man on child pornography charges.

An officer with the Illinois Crimes against Children Task Force learned that child pornography had been distributed from the home of Juan Vargas in the 400 block of Colonial Drive, between Nov. 23 and Dec. 16. Police

searched the home and found child porn on a computer as well as other evidence, such as additional hard drives, DeKalb police Cmdr.

Bob Redel said. No one else in DeKalb is suspected to be involved, he said.

“As far as what was occurring here, he was the only individual I suspect,” Redel said.

“But anytime there is sharing and disseminating, there is someone on other end. There are always other people involved.”

CHICAGO – A bid for freedom by a convicted Somali pirate depicted in a Hollywood movie has been scuttled by a federal appellate court in Chicago, which rejected his argument that he was just 16 during the 2009 hijacking of a U.S.flagged merchant ship and so should not have been prosecuted as an adult.

Abduwali Abdukhadir Muse was the lone survivor of four pirates who hijacked the Maersk Alabama, leading to a four-day standoff recounted in the 2013 movie “Captain Phillips” starring Tom Hanks. The siege ended when Navy snipers on the USS Bainbridge killed Muse’s accomplices as they held Capt.

As an adult, Muse faced stiffer potential punishments. In sentencing him to nearly 34 years prison in 2011, a judge said he and his fellow pirates terrorized the crew, even playing Russian roulette with them. The judge said he didn’t believe Muse’s father who testified via telephone from Somalia that his son was 16, noting that the parent of 12 knew the precise birth date of just one of his children – Muse.

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling this week said under a 2010 plea deal with prosecutors Muse explicitly forfeited his right to ever take back his guilty plea to hijacking, kidnapping and hostage-taking charges based on disputes over his age.

But in filings last year from his federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana, Muse said confusion about birth dates in the East African nation was common, in a part because birth certificates are rare.

And he said he was disoriented after his arrest when he told investigators he was between 18 and 19.

“I did not speak nor understand even a word of English and was terrified,” he said. During the 2009 hearing regarding his age, he said an interpreter spoke his dialect of Somali badly. He added, “I was so scared that anything occurring was a big blur.”

Muse said he wanted to fight the charges but agreed to plead guilty because his lawyers “kept advising me that I would die in an American prison if I proceeded to trial.”

Dems push for automatic voter registration

By SOPHIA TAREEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Top Illinois Democrats threw their support behind a plan for automatic voter registration in the state, saying Friday that a new modernized process could boost civic engagement and cut costs.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and Illinois Senate President John Cullerton, along with youth and minority advocacy groups, pitched the proposal as a way to remove barriers and contrast Republican-led efforts in other states, such as voter ID laws, that they say curb voter eligibility.

“We believe that giving people an opportunity to register and to vote is the best way for them to exercise their democratic options, their democratic rights, and be part of a process that changes the government in years to come,” Durbin said.

Illinois lawmakers look to suspend late renewal fees

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers want to end late fees for license plate renewal stickers after some residents said they felt blindsided when the state stopped mailing reminders to save money.

“I know a lot of people, my constituents, that missed the deadline, had to pay fines. It’s not fair. It’s something we should definitely address,” Democratic Senate President John Cullerton said.

The pot of tardy-renewal cash – expected to keep growing for the foreseeable future – is the latest twist in Illinois’ interminable budget standoff, which has squeezed state agencies and forced them to find creative ways to stay afloat while waiting for Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Democratic-led Legislature to finally pass a spending plan.

Budget crisis prompts possible layoffs at colleges

CHICAGO – Illinois’ ongoing state budget crisis has led Chicago State University to tell its 900 employees that they could be laid off and Western Illinois University to announce $20 million in budget cuts over the next two years.

Public universities in Illinois haven’t received any state funding for eight months because of the state’s budget impasse.

Western Illinois said that means it’ll need to reduce its faculty and staff by 100

fraud. Proponents dismissed those concerns Friday, arguing an electronic system would be more accurate.

Cullerton said Illinois is already leader in voter access, something noted by President Barack Obama last week, and the proposal was a next step.

Illinois teens who are 17 years old can vote in primaries if they turn 18 by the general election. The state also began same-day voter registration in 2014. Republicans have alleged both laws were attempts to boost Democratic voter turnout ahead of critical contests, and Illinois GOP leaders also expressed reservations Friday about the new registration proposal.

House Republican Leader Jim Durkin said potential voters should have to choose to opt in, not vice versa.

Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno said through a spokeswoman that she’s willing to review the proposal, but Democrats also should consider term limits. Messages to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s spokeswoman weren’t immediately returned.

CHICAGO – Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan has formed a bipartisan committee to review the privately run and funded economic development corporation created by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner to attract new businesses to the state.

BELLEVILLE – Gov. Bruce Rauner has asked the federal government to approve disaster assistance for property owners and local governments damaged by early-winter floods.

The governor’s office said Friday that it’s seeking individual assistance for residents and business owners in Alexander, Christian, Clinton, Douglas, Iroquois, Jersey, Madison, Randolph, Sangamon and St. Clair counties. Rauner also wants federal public assistance for local governments in five of those counties as well as 11 others.

State and federal assessments determined that nearly 700 homes were damaged in the late December and early January floods.

Public expenses and damages totaled more than $15 million. That amount falls short of the Federal Emergency Management Agency threshold for reimbursement, but Rauner said the determination should include consideration of local government costs from previous storm damage.

Christie caught the room by surprise when he stepped out to join Trump at a Forth Worth news conference announcing the governor’s support.

The shift marked the beginning of a long-awaited Trump takedown effort that was cheered by anxious Republicans nationwide who question Trump’s party loyalty and fear he’s unelectable in a general election.

Christie’s support gave Trump an opportunity to turn the attention back to himself, as he has done repeatedly during trouble spots in the campaign. His critics acknowledge they are running out of time to stop him.

He’s won three consecutive primary contests and looks strong in many of the 11 states participating in Tuesday’s mega-round of voting. A close look at the delegate math suggests that he could have an insurmountable delegate lead by mid-March if trends don’t change quickly.

Cruz said the Christie endorsement had little impact on his own focus on Super Tuesday.

He suggested the development was “troubling news” for Rubio’s campaign, which had been courting the tough-talking New Jersey governor since he dropped his own presidential candidacy earlier in the month. Instead of securing a new ally, Rubio found himself on the wrong end of the Christie’s attacks.

“Desperate people do desperate things,” Christie said of Rubio while standing at Trump’s side. “The idea that Marco Rubio can get inside Donald Trump’s head is an interesting proposition.”

Thumbs-up to state run by Indian Creek Thumbs-up: To a trip to state for the Indian Creek girls basketball team. It’s been a magical season for the girls from the school in Shabbona and Waterman, and the stands were filled with their supporters on Friday at Redbird Arena in Normal.

The Timberwolves took the defending state champions from Central A&M down to the wire on Friday before losing a close 34-31 defeat. Still, we’re hoping that this is only the start of a long run of dominance and wish the girls luck as they compete in the third-place matchup today. Great job girls, your community is proud of you!

Thumbs-down: To the level of political discourse during the Republican presidential debate on Thursday. Although the growing lead that Donald Trump has built in the race for the nomination made it essential for the other candidates to attack him, at times the “debate” seemed to devolve into the kind of argument you might hear on the playground, with candidates Trump, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz all talking over each other in their haste to sling mud. Meanwhile, candidates Ben Carson and John Kasich were on the stage, but rarely were questioned or pictured.

Thumbs-up: To the customers at Colonial Café in St. Charles, who have pitched in to help DeKalb native Peggy Fodge. She recently was diagnosed with an advanced form of tongue cancer, and has undergone surgery and faces expensive medical bills.

Thumbs-down: To a lack of local candidates for office. We’ve lamented it before, and here we are again with a ballot that offers few choices. On the Republican side, three candidates are vying for the nomination for State’s Attorney, and two people are vying for the GOP nod for District 12 county board. For Democratic voters, there are no local primary contests, and no candidates who have stepped forward to challenge the local Republican state representatives. Public participation in elections is not simply about voting – there also must be candidates.

Thumbs-up: For rosier job prospects. Job and internship fairs at Northern Illinois University were crowded this week, and at least one recent study by Michigan State University predicts that hiring will increase as much as 15 percent in 2016. That’s a drastically different outlook than the one for grads who hit the job market in the depths of the Great Recession, for whom the prospects often were few. We’re pleased to see a brighter outlook and wish all job- and intership-seekers good luck.

Thumbs-up: To officials at Chicago State University, who are in the unfortunate position of having to figure out how to continue their educational mission without any support from the state of Illinois. University officials announced this week that the school would eliminate its spring break from the calendar as a means of ensuring that students would be able to complete the semester before the school ran out of funding. Officials said they also will look at closing buildings and other measures to be more efficient this summer. Good job in taking necessary measures and putting students’ education first. If there are things that can be done to save money, they should be done no matter if the state comes through with funding or not.

In Joy’s case, a lazy rival claims to have come up with her idea first; Joy risks a physical confrontation to defend her invention. I won’t spoil the details of the movie – but since the real Joy Mangano went on to make millions, you can guess that it has a happy ending.

Writer/director David O. Russell, like many in Hollywood, has made movies critical of capitalism and businesspeople, so I’m glad he saw a spark in Joy Mangano, the driven businesswoman.

Hollywood may not understand economics or government regulation, but there are things Hollywood often gets right.

Hollywood celebrates heroic individuals who fight injustice and corrupt establishments.

Hollywood also has a healthy suspicion of the power of covert government activities.

Sure, the “Mission Impossible” crew and plenty of other Hollywood heroes are secret agents – and Hollywood consults with real cops, secret agents and military advisers to capture details more accurately.

That helps the government shape messages to its liking.

But plenty of Hollywood government agents end up being villains anyway.

The film “Sicario,” nominated for three Oscars, shows an ordinary cop, played by Emily Blunt, lured into the dark world of the CIA’s cross-border drug war.

She thought she was just going to be stopping bad guys a little farther from home but discovers that she might be part of an elaborate assassination plot.

I’m biased in favor of Emily Blunt movies because we both are stutterers, but I’d appreciate “Sicario” without that connection, too.

“Sicario” is informative because throughout the movie, even the cops aren’t sure who the good guys are, and almost no one has any idea what the rest of the government is up to. It makes it clear that average citizens don’t stand a chance of finding out.

This is a realistic picture of the drug war.

Corruption and lack of transparency are inevitable when government takes on a mission as hopeless as a war on a substance that lots of people want.

When there’s demand, customers tend to get what they want, even if other people don’t approve.

Hollywood writers and producers,

who have also made plenty of movies about our failed attempt at alcohol Prohibition and the gangsters who rose to power in that period, sometimes understand that the drug war is unwinnable, too.

The U.S. can send helicopters to destroy coca plants in Colombia – or even build a wall between Mexico and America – but that just increases profit margins, so drug-sellers take even greater risks to get their product to customers.

The climax of “Sicario” involves underground tunnels used by Mexican cartels to move drugs (and illegal immigrants) across the border.

None of the characters even consider the possibility of shutting down all the tunnels.

They know they’d never find them all, and that if they did, the cartels would just build more.

Even if they closed all the tunnels, the smugglers would use boats. And planes.

Things don’t work out as well for the characters in “Sicario” as they did for Joy Mangano.

In real life, government efforts don’t bring as much joy as entrepreneurship.

Obama letting Putin call the shots in Syria President Barack Obama and some of his senior aides are sounding skeptical about the partial cessation of hostilities due to begin in Syria today, and for good reason.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to multiple cease-fires in Syria and Ukraine over the past two years but has observed none of them.

The same is true of Syrian dictator Bashar Assad, who hasn’t bothered to hide his intention to continue slaughtering his own people.

If some slackening in the fighting actually takes place, and humanitarian convoys get through, it will be because Putin found it was in his strategic interest. That is the real import of the cease-fire: It puts Russia in control of what happens next in Syria.

For now, Putin is reveling in the geopolitical victory handed to him by the Obama administration,

which, rather than support Syrian rebels against Russia’s bloody assault on the areas they hold, chose to sue for peace on Moscow’s terms.

The Russian ruler has been making phone calls to everyone from Obama to the leaders of Israel and Saudi Arabia, while crowing on television over Russia’s leading role – with the United States as a junior partner – in sorting out the Middle East. No doubt Putin hopes that this demonstration of his importance, and perhaps a relenting of Russian raids on hospitals and other civilian targets in northern Syria, will prompt a few governments to press for the lifting of European Union sanctions on his regime – even though he is violating the cease-fires he agreed to in Ukraine.

Russia also has the option of continuing its military campaign against the Syrian rebel base in the

city of Aleppo, while claiming to respect the cessation of hostilities.

That’s because the terms of the deal negotiated by Secretary of State John F. Kerry exclude the extremist group Jabhat al-Nusra, some of whose fighters are in Aleppo along with Western-backed rebels.

The Assad regime, for its part, has insisted it will continue operations against all “terrorist” groups, which it defines as any that have taken up arms against the regime. Meanwhile, it has scheduled parliamentary elections for April, in blatant disregard of the plan for Syrian peace promoted by Kerry and nominally accepted

by Russia.

Kerry said during a congressional hearing this week that the administration is considering a “Plan B” if the cease-fire fails. Some senior national security officials are said to be deeply resistant to falling in behind

Putin – as they should be. But as The Washington Post’s Karen DeYoung reported Thursday, there’s no consensus on taking significant measures to push back against continuing Russian military action, such as by supplying rebels with antiaircraft weapons. Some are calling for new economic sanctions on Moscow, but Obama has been reluctant to act on those without support from Europe.

It is, of course, this very passivity in U.S. policy that empowers Putin to act as he chooses in Syria. For the sake of the hundreds of thousands of people bottled up in Aleppo and other places subjected to sieges and bombing, we can hope that he concludes that a pause in military operations is in his interest. But if he does so, it won’t be because his actions have been constrained by the United States.

According to Betfair.com, Jennifer Lawrence probably won’t win best actress at the Oscars Sunday.

I’m rooting for her, though – not because of her acting, but because the movie she stars in, “Joy,” celebrates the difficulty of entrepreneurship.

Lawrence’s character is based on real-life entrepreneur Joy Mangano, who invented the self-wringing Miracle Mop and other “Ingenious Designs,” as her company is known.

Now she hawks them and other products on the Home Shopping Network.

The film accurately depicts struggles businesses face. Joy goes deep into debt to finance her idea, overcomes manufacturing problems, persuades skeptical marketers and deals with such menaces as patent trolls.

Patent trolls usually are lawyers/ parasites who don’t even come up with working prototypes for inventions they later claim as their own.

They just grab someone else’s idea, or buy a bunch of them, register patents with the government and wait.

When someone with real technological and business skill creates something useful that’s similar, the troll threatens to sue.

Often the inventor pays just to keep the business alive.

It’s extortion.

But when lawyers do it, it’s legal

“I definitely felt different. I just felt stronger and faster throughout the race,” Hein said. “My legs were hurting at the end, as usual, but when I hit the wall and looked up and saw the state record, I was really just speechless. I’ve dreamed about getting a state record since I was a freshman, and to actually do it at the state meet, it’s amazing.”

After seeing Wheaton co-op Max St. George not only set a state record in that race in the 2015 prelims, but also being the one to edge out Hein in the finals, it’s something that he hasn’t forgotten.

“Ever since that moment, it’s stayed in the back of my head,” Hein added. “To see all the hard work that I’ve put in pay off is awesome. But it’s not over yet. The plan [today] is to swim faster. I’ll go back tonight, have a big meal, recover and come back and try to do just that.”

Hein also took first place, handily, in

the 100 butterfly (47.92) Friday, and will try to top another second-place finish from last year in today’s final.

He’ll have company today, as well.

Three first-time state swimmers, Jacob Bjork, Dylan Rasmussen and Riley Lohse will join Hein in the finals of the 200 medley relay, after taking sixth place (1:33.84) Friday.

Hein, Bjork, Lohse and Austin Bockman will take part in the 400 freestyle relay’s consolation finals today after placing 11th (3:11.02).

Bjork also placed sixth, individually, in the 100 breaststroke (56.83) for the final spot in the final.

“As a team, this is awesome,” Hein said. “We have guys here that have never been here before, and to get the experience in the finals tomorrow will only benefit their future state meets. I’m excited for everything tomorrow.”

“We played really hard and we put ourselves in position to win,” Piekarz said. “Unfortunately, they made more plays than we did, but I have a team full of fighters and we did everything we could to put ourselves in a good position. I’m never going to fault my team because they’ve played hard for me this entire season and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP Huffman leads Genoa-Kingston past Richmond-Burton

Brady Huffman carried the offensive load for the Genoa-Kingston boys basketball in its 46-41 win at Richmond-Burton on Friday night.

Huffman scored a team-high 17 points for the Cogs, who improved to 17-9 overall and 11-3 in the Big Northern Conference East. Senior Tommy Lucca added 11 in the win.

The Cogs will play Harvard at 7:30 p.m.

Kaneland suffers rough, physical loss at Sterling

STERLING – The long road trips for Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference games ended Friday night for the Kaneland boys basketball team, and it felt glad to be back home from Sterling after a rough and physical 61-50 loss to the Golden Warriors at Homer Musgrove Fieldhouse.

The Knights (18-8, 10-3) were whistled for 16 fouls and turned the ball over 20 times against a challenging full-court pressure defense.

In the third, the Raiders stormed back, scoring eight straight points at one point, five of them by Maples. She scored 11 of the Raiders’ 14 points in the quarter.

“We got down on ourselves for a little bit there,” Muchmore said. “But I think we all got back on the same page and started playing together.”

The Timberwolves had to play a short stretch of the third quarter without either Vann or Diehl, who were guarding Maples. The Raiders’ 8-0 run overlapped a lot of that, with Diehl subbing out while the Timberwolves led 20-16, then re-entering in a 20-all tie.

Diehl fouled out in the final seconds, but still played 30 minutes. Foul trouble limited Vann to 21 minutes.

“We knew they were going to come back, and we had to weather it and hinder their shots,” Diehl said. “We didn’t necessarily do that.”

Central A&M coach Tom Dooley said the plan was to force Diehl, particularly in foul trouble, and Maples said they executed well.

“We battled back and refused to go down against a team that’s been here three years in a row.”

“[Diehl] had two fouls, and our game plan was to go at them and get them in foul trouble,” Maples said.

“And we did that.”

Vann still finished with a teamhigh 10 points for the Timberwolves, while Russell added eight. Alexis VanWyhe had a game-high seven rebounds for Indian Creek.

Both teams shot poorly in the game, with the Timberwolves making 25 percent and the Raiders 27 percent.

“We struggled shooting, but that was due to them,” Muchmore said, “Their pressure really got up, and we knew that coming out.”

The Timberwolves now will look to finish their season with a thirdplace state finish when they face Seton Academy at noon today – the Sting lost to Calhoun, 58-42, in the other semifinal.

AMBOY – The Class 1A Amboy Regional championship game between the Indian Creek and Ottawa Marquette boys basketball teams quickly turned into a defensive battle, resulting with Indian Creek losing, 62-53, Friday night.

The majority of the scoring happened in the second half, as both teams played most of the contest with a strong defensive mentality with spurts of offense. Marquette (19-10) scored 42 points in the second half, and Indian Creek (19-10) scored 25.

Indian Creek held a single-digit lead at halftime and after the third quarter, but Marquette found its groove in the fourth to open up the game. Indian Creek coach Joe Piekarz admitted he would’ve liked to have seen more consistency from his offense.

“Of course we would’ve loved to be more consistent on offense, and we didn’t score very many points in the fourth quarter,” Piekarz said. “Marquette plays good defense, and they do a lot of great things. It just came down to them making a couple of more plays.”

Indian Creek struggled to score consistently, and that was only one of the problems it faced Friday. The Timberwolves could not find an answer for Crusaders center John Lechtenberg, who caused trouble in the paint all night – snagging offensive rebounds and earning second-chance baskets. Lechtenberg finished with 16 points.

The Barbs capped another strong regular season by defeating Yorkville, 62-29, Friday night at Dayton Gym, giving them a dominating victory heading into postseason play.

“This is a special group,” said a smiling DeKalb senior Luke Davis, who scored 10 points. “We knew we had some good guys coming back. This is just the beginning for us. Postseason starts now. On Tuesday, the road to state begins. We’ve been talking about this since the loss to Geneva last year (in the regional semifinals).”

As the top seed, the Barbs (24-4 overall, 12-1 in Northern Illinois Big 12 East) will have a bye in the opening round of the Class 4A South Elgin Regional and will play in a semifinal against the winner of No. 8 Elgin and No. 9 South Elgin at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

DeKalb coach Al Biancalana liked what he’s seen from the Barbs heading into the playoffs.

“We’re ready,” Biancalana said. “We’re going to play more athletic teams than we normally see so we have to be ready for that.

We’ll be prepared for that.”

The Barbs will spend their postseason on the road, something they’ve grown accustomed to in the second half of the season.

The victory against Yorkville was the first home game for the Barbs since beating LaSalle-Peru on Feb. 2. In fact, that win over LaSalle-Peru was the only home game for the

Barbs at Dayton Gym since Jan. 9.

“I thought we really did well with adversity in some loud places this year,” Biancalana said. “Traveling far distances and doing all the things I think we’ll see in the postseason – at least, what we hope to see.”

DeKalb senior Michael Pollack scored a team-high 15 points and had three 3-pointers before coming out to a standing ovation in the fourth quarter on senior night. Junior guard Cole Tucker scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half for the Barbs.

Yorkville (11-16, 3-10) was led by Jake Eberhart, who had seven.

The Barbs finished as the outright NI Big 12 champions for the second year a row – their only loss coming in a 62-56 defeat at Kaneland. In the past two seasons, DeKalb has gone 46-12 overall and 24-2 in conference.

“Back-to-back conference titles hasn’t happened here in 40-some years,” Biancalana said. “The seniors really wanted to be undefeated at home this year, and they accomplished that by going 10-0.”

DeKalb used its normal formula of a dominating defense to build a big lead in the first half. Although Yorkville held a small lead in the first half of the opening quarter, a field goal by Master Davis gave the Foxes a 9-8 lead with 2:05 left in the first quarter.

It would be the last field goal for Yorkville until early in the third quarter.

The Barbs outscored the Foxes, 21-4, in the second quarter to go into halftime ahead, 34-13.

“That started with ball pressure,” Biancalana said. “I didn’t think we pressured the ball very well in the first quarter.”

Spartans win dramatic finale

By JAMES HIGH sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Six periods weren’t enough to determine a winner between the Sycamore and Morris boys basketball teams.

The Spartans capped their regular season in dramatic fashion with a 56-53 win in triple overtime Friday at Sycamore High School.

“We just kept with it and didn’t put our heads down,” Spartans senior Tim Zahm said. “There’s a lot of adrenaline going in overtime, and afterward we’ll be tired. But we just kept going hard until the last second went off the clock.”

The Spartans were able to overcome sloppy turnovers, as well as foul trouble, to get into the first overtime with the score tied at 39. Zahm’s six 3-pointers led the way in regulation, and he ended the night with 25 points.

Tyler Maveus had a pair of missed chances to seal the game but helped keep it alive in overtime. He missed a potential game-winning shot at the buzzer in regulation. He also missed a crucial free throw in the first over-

time, but made up for it by hitting a 3 at the buzzer to send the Spartans into their second overtime.

“It was a battle of two teams making big shots down the stretch,” Sycamore coach Andrew Stacy said. “I’m really happy for our team and our seniors, being able to win their last game on this court.”

With the playoffs ahead – and with starter Brett Bemis healthy again – Stacy is optimistic about his team’s chances in the Class 3A Kaneland Regional.

“He did a really great job defensively on the boards,” Stacy said of Bemis. “And it feels good that we’re going into regional with a win, on a high note and with some momentum. Hopefully, we can carry that over and clean up some things that we need to do better. Guys are feeling good about themselves, we just need to put in a couple good days of work before Wednesday.”

The Spartans ended their regular season 14-11, and 8-5 record in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East. They will take on Aurora Central Catholic in the first round Wednesday.

NIU softball splits on 1st day in Phoenix

NIU opened its tournament at Grand Canyon University by beating Texas State, 7-3, before falling to the host school, 11-3.

NIU broke four program records on the first day of the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday night in Akron, Ohio.

LeTristan Pledger snapped the NIU indoor records in the 60-meter hurdles (8.34 seconds) and the long jump (5.81 meters). Kedisha Dallas had a record-breaking performance in the 200 (24.06), and Asia Thomas ran the 400 in 54.78, also a record.

As a team, the Huskies are in sixth place with 15 points.

Lee nabs MAC honor

After a strong showing at the All-American Classic in Houston, NIU junior Joo-Young Lee was named the Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week.

The relaxation response is essentially the opposite of the stress response. It lowers heart rate and blood pressure and decreases the production of stress hormones. Practicing yoga leads to changes in the mind and body that promote feelings of tranquility and well-being.

My friend Dr. Herbert Benson, a famous meditation researcher here at Harvard Medical School, described the following exercises to elicit the relaxation response. Give them a try to see if they help you to feel more relaxed: • Select a word, mantra, prayer or thought.

Focus your attention on it in a relaxed manner.

• When other, everyday thoughts intrude, let them go. Refocus your attention on step one in a relaxed and patient manner without frustration or judgment.

Start by doing this for five minutes. Gradually increase the amount of time you spend on the exercises.

I’d urge you to try yoga, rather than just the relaxation response, because of its greater physical benefits. Dear Dr. K: A friend is urging me to try yoga because I’m stressed out. I am suspicious of all these “touchy-feely” practices. Does yoga have scientifically proven benefits?

Dear Reader: Yes, many studies have found that yoga can improve strength, flexibility and balance. It also is effective in relieving stress and anxiety. It has minimal side effects, although there are a few precautions I should mention.

Like any form of regular exercise, it should be begun gradually in older people.

People with disease of the bones in their neck, and people with glaucoma, need to avoid certain yoga exercises. If you have those problems, talk to a yoga instructor before you begin.

Several years ago a reader asked me about yoga, and I mentioned my first experience with its stress reduction benefits. The story is worth retelling.

The first person I ever knew who regularly practiced yoga was an intense and ambitious young doctor. Any conversation with him was short and difficult; he completed your sentences for you and interrupted you at will.

He was very smart and had a lot of valuable things to say, but that didn’t mean you looked forward to talking with him.

Then something odd happened. I had a conversation with him in which he didn’t interrupt me. A few weeks later, I had another.

What was going on? I learned from his wife that she’d suggested, strongly, that he try yoga – and he loved it.

In addition to physical postures and exercises, traditional yoga incorporates breath control, deep relaxation, meditation, concentration and mindfulness. These mindbody practices counteract stress by evoking the relaxation response. The relaxation response can be practiced without doing yoga – although the physical benefits (strength, flexibility and balance) are not as great.

When you read a novel, or watch a movie, do you pick the character with whom you can most closely relate? If so, it probably helps you to get into the story.

At the bridge table, you will often need to have a way to get into one hand or the other. You must carefully watch your entries. In today’s deal, how should South play in three no-trump after West leads his fourth-highest diamond, and East puts up the 10?

South’s two-no-trump rebid was game-invitational with something worthwhile in diamonds, the unbid suit. North’s raise was borderline, but he hoped partner could make use of the club suit.

South starts with six top tricks: two spades, three diamonds (given trick one) and one club. His best chance for three more winners lies with the hearts, but declarer will presumably have to lose the lead twice.

So he will need hand entries.

If South starts with a low heart and the defender with the ace takes the trick, there will be no problems.
