Local schools in mascot tournament POLL YESTERDAY’S You might not know this, but a couple of our local schools have reached the “Sweet 16” in a statewide tournament of nicknames.

In Comcast SportsNet Chicago’s “Mascot Madness” contest, both the DeKalb Barbs and Genoa-Kingston Cogs are still in the hunt for the tournament title, which started with 64 schools and now is down to 16.

The Cogs are facing off against the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes (or in the case of the girls’ teams, the Lady Wooden Shoes) while the Barbs are facing the Evanston Wildkits. You can vote in the contest by visiting the website csnchicago.com/mascotmadness.

The Barbs definitely have one of the state’s more unique nicknames, and graphically speaking, there are worse things to have your town affiliated with than barbed wire.

As for the Cogs, it seems there’s no precise agreement on exactly where that comes from. On the city’s Wikipedia page, it’s said to be an acronym either for “Community of Genoa Schools” or “Consolidation of Genoa Schools.” A former sportswriting colleague always used to say it stood for “City of Genoa Schools.”

But you get the idea.

There are several great nicknames for schools around our state, such as the Fisher Bunnies, the Polo Marcos, the Cobden Appleknockers, the Hoopeston Cornjerkers, the Freeport Pretzels, the Piasa Bird (it was a bizarre flying creature a French missionary priest claimed he saw in the 17th century near Alton.)

Unlike the generic animal, mythical character – or the unfortunately still used Native American mascots – there’s usually a backstory to unusual nicknames. It might reflect the town’s main export, it’s ethnic heritage, or just what an old-time sportswriter came up with while watching them compete.

Here’s to interesting mascots, and good luck to the Barbs and Cogs in this tournament of the unusual.

By RHONDA GILLESPIE rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Kaylee Meyer said she’s torn between pursuing a career in law, computer programming and engineering career paths, but the tour she took Tuesday with other area high school students could help her ultimately decide.

The DeKalb Ogle Workforce Development Consortium took about 85 students from Sycamore, DeKalb, Genoa-Kingston and Rochelle Township high schools to visit businesses in

DeKalb County that gave the students a peek at engineering jobs. They also explored Northern Illinois University’s school of engineering.

“I have a rather diverse set of interests,” said Meyer, a 14-year-old freshman at Genoa-Kingston. “I’m just undecided, and I figure I might as well gather enough information about every category, to see what fits.”

Gene Fogle said the consortium has sponsored the tours for students for the past three years. In the fall semester of the school year, the organization offers the Heavy Metal Tour. During

the spring semester, students can take part in Assemble Ur Career.

Both events are free to the students.

The DeKalb County and Greater Rochelle Economic Development Corporations each contributes to funding the tours, and other money comes from private donations and fundraisers, Fogle said.

“A student typically gets to see teachers, policemen, doctors and that kind of thing,” he said. “They’re not sure what’s available in other places for employment. So we try to expose them to the different businesses. We

try to educate them on what puts them on an educational pathway. And then we try to get them employed.”

Students from Sycamore High School visited shredder and grinder manufacturer Cresswood Industries in Cortland, and high-tech storage maker CST in DeKalb. Rochelle students toured Sawicki Motors and Butitta Bros. auto repair center in the town. Students from DeKalb High School got a look at Johnson Controls, a Fortune 500 giant with a

DeKalb officials to review incentive policies

By BRITTANY KEEPERMAN bkeeperman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – City officials will review DeKalb’s incentive policy after the announcement that Brian Bemis Automotive will shutter its DeKalb location and move to Sycamore, where the dealership was offered incentives.

“It’s in our best interest to review DeKalb’s policies with other municipalities to ensure that ours are competitive and in alignment with our long-term goals,” DeKalb’s 6th Ken Mundy Ward Alderman Dave Baker said.

Sycamore’s City Council approved a deal last week that will allow Brian Bemis Toyota to build a 25,000-square-foot facilJohn Rey ity in Sycamore, near the Menard’s store on Mercantile Drive. Sycamore will return 50 percent of the sales taxes the company generates at the new site. The site could bring in an estimated $3.2 million in vehicle sales over the course of 10 years, according to Sycamore city documents.

DeKalb turned down a request for a $650,000 tax increment financing district loan from the dealership in February 2015.

The deal was turned down because it fell outside of city guidelines, which limit incentives to covering 20 percent of the project cost with a seven-year agreement. Bemis officials wanted the city to fund 28 percent of the project over 10 years. They also requested an

“It’s one thing if a retailer that is not in the area compares the two cities,” Baker said. “But for extra incentive to be offered. ... There is nothing to be thought of but poaching.”

Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy said he wasn’t surprised to hear the criticism but didn’t think the city acted outside boundaries, especially because the auto group approached them.

“I’m not surprised there would be some hard feelings,” Mundy said.

“But this isn’t precedent setting. ...

There was discussion for quite some time between the company and city.

Our city manager was consistent that we would stick to the offers and incentive package we had put forth with other car dealerships in the past.

There is nothing new here.”

Mayor John Rey said he was open to a review of city policy but didn’t want DeKalb to be an island.

“I think Alderman Baker’s concern emphasizes the need to review our guidelines,” he said. “I think we need to entertain conversations on engagement with area communities. We

need to build positive relationships with neighbors to enhance economic vitality of the area, including DeKalb, Sycamore and DeKalb County.”

He added that he thought the city should look at how they treat business prospects.

“I’ve learned that a number of developers have a concern about coming before council for a lack of dignity and respect shown to their specific project,” Rey said “They recognize an economic engine, bringing business, service and jobs to our community. I’d like us to remain business friendly.”

Willey announced her retirement from the position in February of last year with a base salary of $110,000. Hickman’s compensation package is comparable. He will make $142,000 including base salary, vacation time, health insurance and other benefits, Block said.

Hickman said that he likes the smalltown aspect of the district. District 426 is located in Kirkland, operates two schools and serves about 580 students, according to the Illinois State Board of Education.

“When I had a chance to meet the board members, I immediately began

to feel that connection,” Hickman said.

“I have worked with residents within the Hiawatha district in other capacities and I had an interest in the small, hometown values and how the community comes around students to help them grow.”

Hickman said that his main priority in his first year would be to focus on the district’s financial standing and improve student achievement.

“It’s well known that schools across the state are struggling financially,” Hickman said. “I want to engage the community in a strategic planning process to shape a viewpoint of where we want to be.”

The board also voted to approve a tax anticipation warrant to make up for late payments on the state’s behalf.

“The district is supposed to receive four categorical payments each year from the state, the last one being collected toward the end of June,” District 427 Chief Financial Officer Nicole Stuckert said. “To this date we’ve only collected one payment.

The state only anticipates paying one other payment by the end of this

school year.”

Although the board unanimously approved Stuckert’s request for up to a $5 million anticipation warrant, members said they felt their options were limited.

“With a set of four payments being promised to us and only one being delivered from the state, it really puts on in a cash bind,” Dombek said. “We have to do something so we can meet payroll and have cash-on-hand until we meet the next installment of payments, property tax payments. We sort of had no other alternative but to go down that pathway in this particular moment in time.”

SYCAMORE – Sycamore School District 427 Board unanimously approved a budget reduction plan Tuesday that will cost the district 56 employees and calls for consolidation of services.

In the second year of the board-approved, three-year, $3.8 million budget reduction plan, the, the goal is to have the district’s budget balanced by the end of next school year, meaning the board is being forced to make hard cuts, Superintendent Kathy Countryman said.

Although the board set aside time for a public hearing about the layoffs, there was no public comment from the nearly 50-person crowd gathered at Tuesday’s meeting.

“We’re looking to cutting personnel because it’s the only place left where we can make cuts and, unfortunately, we’re not alone,” Board President Jim Dombek said. “We see other businesses where employees are just being told to do more with less, and, unfortunately, that seems to be the mentality of our state government when it comes to education.

“It’s a sad thing. It almost embarrasses you to be a [resident] of a state that has a mentality like that.”

District 427 will eliminate 14 teaching positions, including physical education, music, art and technology staff, Countryman said. Responsibility for those classes would be Kathy Countryman redistributed to other employees, although school officials are considering cutting one after-school music program.

Other layoffs include more than three certified support team Jim or elective positions, Dombek 15 full-time-equivalent paraeducators and one full-time-equivalent technology staff position. An additional two full-time paraeducator positions could become part-time.

Additionally, transportation for Sycamore High School students enrolled in “zero hour” courses, or classes that start before the regular school day, could be eliminated, and a new teacher mentoring program is

Chicago police recruit more minorities

By JASON KEYSER The Associated Press CHICAGO – A campaign to increase diversity in the ranks of the Chicago Police Department has resulted in a 13 percentage point jump in minority applicants, the department said in an announcement emphasizing its efforts to restore frayed trust with the black community.

About 70 percent of the 14,000 would-be officers in a recent pool of applicants are black, Hispanic or Asian, the department said in Monday’s news release. Recruiters visited churches, schools and community events, and the department produced ads in Spanish as well as English.

The minority recruitment drive is part of the department’s efforts to rebuild ties with the community that were badly damaged by recent cases

Unions sue Chicago suburb over right-to-work ordinance

LINCOLNSHIRE – Four labor unions are suing a Chicago suburb over an ordinance meant to bar private employers from requiring workers to join unions or pay dues.

Gov. Bruce Rauner has encouraged municipalities to pass local right-to-work ordinances as part of his “turnaround agenda,” which includes efforts to curb the power of unions, and also calls for workers’ compensation reform, property tax freezes, political term limits, lawsuit reforms and other changes.

Supporters of right-to-work legislation argue that it would help promote job growth, while opponents claim it would weaken unions and depress wages.

The lawsuit against Lincolnshire and key village officials was filed Thursday in federal court in Chicago by unions representing engineers, construction workers and carpenters, including three affiliated with the AFL-CIO. The unions are seeking to have the ordinance declared invalid and block its enforcement, the Daily Herald reported.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan issued a formal opinion last year, saying

“To continue restoring trust between the police and communities across Chicago, we must build a police force that represents the diversity of the entire city.”

Most other communities in the north or northwest suburbs either rejected or ignored Rauner’s agenda, with several officials saying the issue should be dealt with at the state level.

The unions suing Lincolnshire argue that the ordinance violates the National Labor Relations Act and the Labor Management Relations Act by prohibiting union hiring agreements and payroll deductions for union dues and fees.

LAWRENCEVILLE – A southern Illinois man faces a charge of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer af-

There is some research showing a more diverse police force has important symbolic value and can influence attitudes, but it is just one piece of building a better relationship with the community, said Jens Ludwig, director of the University of Chicago Crime Lab. “Increasing the share of the police force that is minority is not a panacea for improving police-community relations,” Ludwig said. Police also need to interact with people outside of responding to 911 calls through things such as foot patrols and community meetings, he said.

Lawrence County State’s Attorney Chris Quick filed the charge Tuesday against 55-year-old Keith McKinney of Lawrenceville.

Investigators say McKinney fired a gunshot that struck Lawrence County Deputy Kyle Gilmore in the chest after the officer made a traffic stop Monday.

The Evansville Courier & Press reported Gilmore’s body armor stopped the bullet, and the deputy returned fire, striking McKinney in the leg.

McKinney was taken to a hospital in Evansville, Indiana, where he underwent surgery for his injuries. He remains hospitalized under police guard. It’s unclear whether he has an attorney who might comment on his behalf.

Judge rules against city in red-light camera suit

CHICAGO – A Cook County judge has denied a request from the city of Chicago to dismiss a lawsuit claiming it denied due process to motorists ticketed under its red-light camera program.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Judge Kathleen Kennedy’s late Friday ruling declares the tickets void and keeps alive a lawsuit seeking to have the city refund hundreds of millions of dollars to motorists ticketed since 2003.

Plaintiffs’ attorney Jacie Zolna can now move forward with a request for class-action status. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of three named plaintiffs, argued the city violated a requirement to issue a second notice of violation before a determination of liability was issued against motorists.

City Law Department spokesman Bill McCaffrey said the city believes the plaintiffs aren’t entitled to “any recovery, let alone any refunds.”

Assembly ordinance not attack on freedom It is good that the public has taken an interest in the recent proposals to pass ordinances addressing unlawful assemblies in the City of DeKalb.

Any attempt to regulate one of the “five freedoms” guaranteed by the First Amendment should be subject to close scrutiny. The level of scrutiny – including a recent three-hour public hearing by the city’s Human Relations Commission last week – may have surprised DeKalb Police Chief Eugene Lowery, who has said in hindsight, he would not have made the proposals in the first place.

Public opinion has already led to some changes to the proposals, including the decision to raise the bar on what constitutes an “assembly” to 10 or more people.

But it’s also important to remember a few things in the context of this debate: 1. No one has come forward to complain about police misconduct. This was initiated by police.

2. What the police are telling us is that conditions exist that can lead to street violence or even riots, and the city does not have laws in place to address that issue.

Lowery has said that police already have been faced with crowds that have gotten out of hand, where people have been arrested. Large off-campus parties are a weekly occurrence when students are at Northern Illinois University, with multiple drinking parties going on at once.

“I can tell you, these officers are extremely tolerant of the students and parties – perhaps to the detriment of their neighbors whose voices maybe aren’t being heard,” Lowery said Thursday at the Human Rights Commission hearing.

There have been at least two shootings in the past six months that have occurred outside latenight, off-campus parties, one in September and most recently in January.

Crowds from these parties also sometimes fill the streets, creating a public nuisance by blocking traffic and potentially being dangerous. When a crowd must be dispersed, it’s important for everyone’s safety that there be clear guidelines in place for how to do it in the safest, fairest way possible. A local ordinance would also allow those arrested to be cited under city ordinance, rather than be charged under state law.

According to the proposals, police would have to provide people notice that they’re breaking the law and give them a clear path to leave before arresting them.

This should also be applied to protests. A second proposal would prohibit people from carrying weapons in protests, or using items such as baseball bats or two-by-fours to create picket signs.

That sounds like common sense.

It seems as though some people have used this debate about the need for an assembly ordinance as an excuse to criticize the DeKalb PD, and that’s an unfortunate reflection of our times.

DeKalb’s patrol officers are the people best acquainted with what’s going on in the streets.

They’re watching the community 24 hours a day, every day.

The city’s top cop is telling us there’s the potential for a future situation and recommends the city take steps now so that if a problem occurs, it is prepared to deal with it.

We support the rights of people to peaceably assemble and even to practice nonviolent civil disobedience. However, it’s also important for city government to be prepared in case there is a future situation where an unruly crowd must be dispersed to protect the public.

That includes training police for such an occurrence, as well as having fair and effective laws and procedures in place.

Rauner said you can’t just tax Illinois back into prosperity. You have to reform the state’s political and business climate first.

Otherwise we are just throwing good money after bad.

The Illinois ship of state is capsized and taking on water. We are billions behind in paying our bills this year, and we have a state credit rating that would make a used car salesman snicker.

And our politicians are busy pointing fingers. And Illinois’ residents are busy packing their bags.

In fact, every five minutes, Illinois suffers a net loss of one resident. And yet, moments after the speech, there were still some pooh-poohing this exodus of people and jobs from the state as right-wing propaganda.

Well, if those lawmakers don’t believe data from moving companies, the Internal Revenue Service or the U.S. Census Bureau, maybe they should just talk to grandparents in their districts, whose only interaction with out-of-state grandchildren is over the telephone.

Increasingly, parents are watching their adult children start their families elsewhere because the jobs just aren’t here.

Regardless, given House Speaker Mike Madigan’s and Senate President John Cullerton’s responses following the speech, they appear in no mood to compromise.

That’s unfortunate.

Every day Illinois goes without a budget, it goes $33 million farther into the red.

Middle ground is hard to find, and compromise is a rare commodity in state government.

We are eight months into the current fiscal year and we don’t have a budget.

The wisest thing I heard following the speech was from State Rep. Jack Franks, D-Woodstock: If the members of the General Assembly would quit listening to their leaders and start listening to their constituents, we would have a budget in no time.

In other words, it has not been the most high-minded affair.

But beyond the fact that it has been ugly and dispiriting, the campaign has also come to feel ... ominous, like a portent of some dystopian future. You wonder if maybe the superficial nastiness of it isn’t truly superficial at all, but rather, evidence of a grim new reality: that we are a nation of 323 million people in 50 states who not only are not united, but don’t particularly want to be.

It is hard to escape a sense that at some level, we have disengaged from one another and that as a result, our politics has shrunk to its extremes, like two boxers who retreat to neutral corners to yell across the ring.

Will we have Trump campaigning on Mexicans and Muslims, while Sanders rails about money and malfeasance? Will we be asked only to decide which makes us most angry and afraid?

If so, whither hope?

And here, Democrats will want it noted that they were not the first to abandon the center. Let the record so state. The GOP eschewed all claim to that ground long ago and even purged itself of members who dared wander too close.

Still, the question of who is to blame for a politics of extremism is less compelling than the question of what that politics portends. Two boxers yelling at one another from neutral corners makes for great theater.

But the fighting is done in the center of the ring.

SPRINGFIELD – As State Rep. Mary Flowers strolled from the House chambers last week after listening to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s budget address, a reporter asked her reaction to the speech.

Her response? A thumbs-down.

It’s the kind of response you’d expect from someone who had her mind made up before the first word was spoken.

Welcome to Springfield, the land of political entrenchment.

The governor tried to set a more conciliatory tone this time. He really did.

In fact, here’s how the speech began: I stand before you today with respect for our co-equal branches of government, acknowledgment of our shared responsibility for the future and a deeply-rooted desire to work with each and every one of you to right our ship of state.

There are many kinds of folk art, but some of the strangest collectibles are called “prison art,” which is art made by prisoners in prisons or jails using the very unorthodox materials that are available.

In earlier centuries, when prisons often were on islands or in isolated places, inmates carved coconuts, tortoiseshells or shells found in nature. By the 19th century, now very valuable sailing ship models were made of scraps of wood with thread or string for rigging and fabric for sails. Today, these amazing scale model ships made by captured French sailors sell for thousands of dollars each. In the 20th century, toothpicks and matchsticks by the hundreds were carefully put together to make buildings or boxes or toys. Old cigar boxes were taken apart and the pieces were carved to make picture frames or boxes with clever geometric carvings. And the wannabe painter used a white handkerchief and a pen to draw detailed black and white pictures.

Much of this work was sold to visitors along with some of the more familiar paintings on board or canvas. The money went to the prisoner-artist to use at the prison store.

Avery elaborate Ferris wheel with surrounding fair buildings was made of thousands of toothpicks and lots of patience about 1940. A ticket booth and entries to the fair are covered with paper printed like bricks. There are 12 chairs with red cellophane seats on the wheel, and

a flat wooden base and border with fence posts. But most amazing is that the chairs swing while the Ferris wheel turns. And it is almost all made from toothpicks. The construction is covered by a Plexiglas case with a label explaining that the art was made by an Ohio State Prison inmate between 1940 and 1950. It sold at an Ohio auction for $660 at the end of 2015. *** Q: I have a table marked “Kiel Furniture Co., Milwaukee, Wis., Guaranteed Quality.” The top needs to be refinished. Can you tell me when it was made and if it’s worth refnishing?

A: Kiel Manufacturing Company was started in 1892 by a group of 36 men and one woman to provide jobs for the people in the small town of Kiel, Wisconsin. The area had plenty of lumber and skilled labor. The name of the company became Kiel Furniture Company in 1907. It bought a factory in Milwaukee in 1920 and made diningroom furniture there and smaller pieces of furniture in Kiel. The factory in Milwaukee closed in 1932.

The factory in Kiel became A.A. Laun Furniture Co. in 1935. The table would sell as used furniture, but the price will be lower if the top is not in good shape. A 1925 Kiel Furniture table with inlaid decoration and six legs sold for $138. *** Q: Can you tell me the value of a charm bracelet with four cigarette packs on it? It has packs of Camel, Chesterfield, Lucky Strikes, and Old Gold cigarettes. The Chesterfield pack has paint loss.

A: Guhl & Harbeck was founded

by Heinrich Guhl and Christian Harbeck in Hamberg, Germany, in 1867. After Harbeck died in 1899, Guhl ran the business. Members of Guhl’s family operated the company until it closed in 1970. Guhl & Harbeck started out making sewing machines and later expanded into typewriters and other office equipment. The company patented its Jupiter pencil sharpener in 1897.

It sold for $10, expensive for that era. Several Jupiter model pencil sharpeners were made and many

sold in the United States. Value depends on age and condition. An early pencil sharpener in good to excellent condition might be sold for about $275. *** Q: I have a stoneware jug that was passed down to me from my grandmother. It’s 14 inches high and is decorated with a blue flower in a pot and the name “Somerset Potters Works” and the No. 2. The jug has a handle and its original cork. It’s larger at the top than at the bottom. I’m downsizing and would like to sell it. What is a good price for both the buyer and me?

A: There were several potteries in Somerset, Massachusetts during the early 1800s. Somerset Potters Works, also known as L.& B.G. Chase Pottery, was in business in Somerset, Massachusetts, from 1847 to 1882. Brothers Leonard and Benjamin G. Chase started making stoneware about 1838 Somerset Potters Works was incorporated in 1847 with Leonard Chase listed as agent. Crocks, jars, bean pots, bowls and other stoneware items were made. The pottery was reorganized in 1882 and a new

“It was good to get the ball rolling, and we had a lead for most of the match because of where we started,” Davis said. “But we left some major decisions that could have been techs, some techs could have been pins. We lost some we won last time. They wrestled really well and came out on top.”

Justin Silbaugh lost, 11-5, at 113, and Sam Knuth lost, 7-2, at 120 – both won

the last time the Spartans and Warriors met. That meet finished in a 39all tie, with Sterling winning on pin criteria.

“Sycamore is real tough at the top, and we knew given the starting weight we were going to be down a lot,” Sterling coach Jeff Gale said. “We had to rely on some of our seniors to bring us back, and we got some huge wins at 106 and 113 I don’t think we were for sure counting on, but those guys stepped up.”

The Spartans have only four seniors on the roster and three in Tuesday’s starting lineup.

“We’re a young team, and to say we even got this far is a huge accomplishment,” Davis said. “Obviously, you want to win, move on, but we had a shot. We left some points out there, but it’s a growing thing for us. We’re going to improve on this and keep going in the right direction.”

The Sycamore boys basketball team kept it close, but South Elgin pulled away late and the Spartans fell, 58-49, Tuesday night in Elgin.

Jack Mizgalski scored a teamhigh 22 points for the Spartans in the loss.

Kaneland boys basketball team falters in 2nd half

Ryan David had a big first half for the Kaneland boys basketball team, but the Knights lost, 78-62, at West Chicago on Tuesday night.

David scored 18 of his 20 points in the first half for the Knights, who led 35-29 at halftime.

However, West Chicago outscored Kaneland, 49-27, in the second half.

NIU C Naegele named MAC West Player of the Week

Northern Illinois senior catcher Emily Naegele was named the Mid-American Conference West Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

Jamyra Carter was named the Mid-American Conference Specialist of the Week for the Huskies after a strong showing in NIU’s tri-meet victory over Ball State and Seattle Pacific.

Carter set a career-high on uneven parallel bars (9.9) to help the Huskies post the best performance in the event in school history (49.275).

It is the second time in her career that Carter has been MAC Specialist of the Week.

Northern Illinois senior guard Travon Baker scored six points in a matter of seconds to give the Huskies’ men’s basketball team the lead early in the second half at Central Michigan.

The advantage didn’t last long.

The Chippewas bounced back with hot shooting down the stretch to continue the Huskies’ road woes in a 76-64 win Tuesday night in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.

“We have to get ourselves together and win on the road,” NIU coach Mark Montgomery said. “That comes down to mental toughness, and stop playing individually and start playing as a team.

It shouldn’t be that much separation at home and the road.”

The Huskies (18-10 overall, 7-8 Mid-American Conference West) now have lost seven consecutive road games, but they are 15-1 at home on the season – including 6-1 in conference play.

Baker had a four-point play after being fouled on a made 3-pointer, and

Junior guard Aaric Armstead, who came into the game averaging 11.3 points a game, dealt with foul trouble and finished with four points (1-for-5 shooting) and six rebounds in 21 minutes.

At halftime, the Huskies trailed, 3931, in part because their three leading scorers on the season – Maric, Baker and Armstead – combined for four points.

“We shot the ball too quickly and played selfishly offensively, and that’s why we got in a hole,” Montgomery said.

Sophomore guard Josh Kozinski played a big role for the Chippewas in the second half, finishing the game with 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting from beyond the arc.

“He came up with some big shots,” Montgomery said.

The Huskies return to the NIU Convocation Center at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, when they play Western Michigan.

Schwarber’s legend keeps growing Slugger hits another car during batting practice Tuesday

By GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com MESA, Ariz. – The Cubs have an All-Star at catcher, an All-Star at first base, another at second, a Rookie of the Year at third, a Gold Glove-winning All-Star in center, and a Cy Young winner on the mound.

And then there’s The Legend.

He’ll be in left field on most days.

When he’s not lifting cars off trapped motorists. Or hanging out with his blue ox.

Kyle Schwarber has been a major-league player for all of 78 games, including the playoffs. That’s fewer than Arismendy Alcantara. But nobody on this team inspires more awe when he steps to the plate – or as many social media hymnals when hits a baseball.

“And it doesn’t matter who’s pitch-

ing,” teammate David Ross said. “It’s given me a complex about how bad I am.”

That was Ross last fall marveling as Schwarber called shots through a rookie-record home run binge in the playoffs – reserving a place in Cubs lore with a wild-card shot off Pirates ace Gerrit Cole into the Allegheny River, and his video-board moon landing at Wrigley Field against Cardinals lefty Kevin Siegrist a week later in a division-series clincher.

Kyle Then he homered off Schwarber Mets ace Matt Harvey in the NLCS. Teammates said later he called both the river shot and the homer off Siegrist.

All of which has overshadowed the less elegant fact that he arrived in Mesa this spring as a very raw catcher forced to play left field to keep his bat in the lineup with a lot left to prove as a big-league player.

Of course, then he started breaking windshields and denting luxury auto-

mobiles in early spring batting practice (drilling a BMW Tuesday), and the Legend of Schwarber grew another few feet. And all that stuff about his fielding was forgotten again.

How comfortable is this 22-year-old kid with all the Bunyanesque attention and adoration from Cub faithful?

“This can keep going on if the fans like it,” he said earnestly. “But I’m still going to stay me.”

Whether that changes if he becomes the All-Star power hitter and clubhouse leader many in the organization believe he will, it’s a balance that has seemed part of his nature since he became an overnight college hitting star as a freshman at Indiana.

“I’ve had great players over my time, but I tell all the guys I coach what separates Kyle Schwarber is he’s as humble as they get,” said Schwarber’s college coach Tracy Smith, the one-time Cubs farmhand now coaching at Arizona State. “There’s no ego. He wants to win.”

Smith said the work ethic that has impressed so many Cubs officials since Schwarber was drafted in 2014 also was there since the coach got to

know the lefty slugger as a teenager – the biggest reason Smith believes Schwarber will overcome his Deadspin-hyped defensive woes from the playoffs to become a legitimate major-league left fielder.

“He’s athletic enough. He’s going to figure it out,” Smith said. “It’s just a matter of reps.”

If the Cubs want to speed up the process, just tell Schwarber he’s not good enough to do it. Smith did that when Schwarber was a freshman, adjusting to major college catching.

“We told him, ‘We’re going to recruit [another catcher] because [you] can’t catch,’ ” Smith said. “And what does he do? He goes out and turns himself into a first-round catcher. So I’m not going to put anything beyond that kid once he sets his mind to it.”

Schwarber nodded when reminded of that story. “Backing down from things is just not something I’m going to do,” he said.

“I’m a firm believer in not letting anyone tell you that you can’t do anything. I’ve seen too many instances where people have been told that, and it worked out differently.”

CHICAGO – The Blackhawks’ defense has been eye-opening recently, and not in a good way.

Despite going 2-1-1 since Feb. 13, they’ve given up too many scoring chances and haven’t possessed the puck enough. The culmination was a 6-1 loss outdoors at the Minnesota Wild on Sunday.

“Our overall team game in those games where we’ve been blown out is not what the Hawks do to play hockey,” Andrew Shaw said Tuesday, after a practice that Patrick Kane and Niklas Hjalmarsson missed for rest.

“We got away from our game. We’ve got to learn from that.”

The Sun-Times learned Tuesday that Hawks general manager Stan Bowman is actively seeking a trade or two before Monday’s trade deadline.

Bowman has carved out enough salary-cap space for at least one deal, but could fit in another if he can shed another contract or two.

The question is which position he covets most?

Is it a high-end forward to play on the top line, or a veteran defenseman for a second pairing that has a rotation of rookies shifting with Brent Seabrook?

Last week in New York, coach Joel Quenneville said he wanted to add a forward or two, rather than supplementing a seven-man defensive group that has, essentially, three rookies.

He expressed confidence in that group again Tuesday, but left some wiggle room.

“Defense, I still like our group back there,” Quenneville said. “We’ve got some young kids coming in that are getting a chance to get some good experience, and I think these kids are coming along fine. That opportunity (of a playoff role), if it was presented to them, I think they would handle it well, ... but we’ll see.”

One of the rookies, Erik Gustafsson, has been scratched in three of the past four games, including the game in Minnesota. Gustafsson will play against Nashville on Thursday at the United Center, and Quenneville wants him to be more active offensively.

“It’s hard to sit, but you’ve just got to deal with it right now and just keep going,” said Gustafsson, 23, who signed last spring out of the Swedish League. “I just have to come back to my game and try to stay confident when I have the puck on my tape ... and try to (make) more good decisions out there on the ice.”

That goes for more than him.

“Right now, I think we’re a way better team when our (defensemen) are active on the back end,” Quenneville said. “It really gets our gap going, gets our possession game up, gets us deeper in their zone, and all of a sudden they have to fend off a pretty active fiveman offense. When we’re not (active), it’s a big difference.”

Before practice, Marcus Kruger (fractured left wrist) skated on his own. There is no set timetable for Kruger’s return. He is expected to miss the remaining 20 games of the regular season.

“He skated really hard today,” Quenneville said. “We’ll see. We know that his legs aren’t the problem. He’s still a ways away.”

Marian Hossa (lower-body injury) didn’t practice, but was spotted walking without a brace or limp. Quenneville said Hossa might return next week.

Ejections for personal fouls being debated

By MICHAEL MAROT The Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS – Stephen Jones believes the NFL will crack down on flagrant personal fouls next season.

He’s just not sure what it will take for a player to get thrown out of a game.

After spending most of Tuesday inside an Indianapolis hotel, Jones emerged from an NFL competition committee meeting and acknowledged he expects the debate over ejecting players for multiple personal fouls to be resolved as early as next month’s owners meetings in Boca Raton, Florida.

The debate is all about the details.

“I think it’s not really about how many, it’s what personal fouls should be included,” said Jones, the Dallas Cowboys’ executive vice president for player personnel. “There’s more to it than that (a number).”

It’s yet another aspect of the

growing concern over player safety in football.

In response, league officials have implemented stronger concussion protocols and supported moves to teach safer tackling techniques at all levels of the sport.

The competition committee, meanwhile, has recommended a series of rules changes in recent years to provide more protection on the field. Some of the alterations have included penalties for hitting defenseless receivers, restricting the use of the crown of the helmet by offensive or defensive players, and eliminating blind-side blocks, particularly on punt or kick returns.

New concerns emerged in December when New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was called for three personal fouls during a loss to the Carolina Panthers. Beckham played aggressively throughout the game, but some of his penalties were so flagrant it spurred a debate whether players with more than one offense in a game should automatically be ejected.

SPORTS BRIEFS Hilton apologizes after Cavs’ Irving bitten by bed bugs

OKLAHOMA CITY – Hilton Hotels apologized Tuesday after Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving said he was bitten by bed bugs during a weekend stay in downtown Oklahoma City.

Irving played only nine minutes Sunday in a win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. The team blamed flu-like symptoms, but Irving later said he was not feeling well after discovering bed bugs on a pillow and ending up on a couch instead of his bed at the Skirvin Hilton. He said he didn’t get much sleep Saturday night and had a sore back, too.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The NFL said video of Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Dante Fowler Jr. apparently refereeing a fight between his girlfriend and the mother of his child includes “disturbing images.”

Fowler took responsibility “for everything that happened” in the 30-second video released by TMZ on Tuesday.

The surveillance tape shows Fowler and the two women standing outside an elevator and talking. Fowler ap-

pears to offer a hand gesture for them to start fighting and then steps back.

leave the record on the books, placing an even greater emphasis on throwing the first pitch for a strike and getting more outs early in counts. It’s about pitching deeper into games, throwing fewer pitches, being stronger at the end of the season, and prolonging his career.

“There’s no doubt pitchers love punchouts,” Sale said. “But striking out 12 guys over five innings isn’t doing anyone a whole lot of good.

“You don’t want to get too far away from what has made you successful, but 123 pitches over seven innings is a lot to handle over 30 starts. Try to get quicker, more efficient outs instead of five or six pitches per guy.”

Sale sees 10 fewer pitches a game in 30 starts adding to three more games of life in his arm.

“It’s especially important for October aspirations,” he said. “All these things are about finding a formula to get right for the postseason, because that’s what we’re here for.”

Sale talked postseason – he never has pitched in one – on Day 1 of camp last week, and that will be his driving force in 2016. He’s a major reason the Sox have a shot, and he’ll take as many shots as needed to get there.

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Chris Sale plans to bring a different tack to pitching in 2016 – fewer strikeouts and fewer pitches will be king – but don’t expect the intense, short-tempered left-hander to mellow on the mound.

The emphasis will be on throwing more first-pitch strikes, which means immediate attack mode with every hitter.

And the Sale who went at it with Victor Martinez in Detroit two seasons ago and with Yordano Ventura at U.S. Cellular Field last season will have that familiar reddish hue around the hind quarters.

“Here’s the thing,” Sale said, “when you get adrenalin going and in the heat of the moment, from the outside looking in, it’s a lot easier to say I shouldn’t have done that. But no, I don’t look at either of those and wish I had them back. I was actually telling (former Tigers and new Sox catcher Alex) Avila, ‘The other team isn’t supposed to like me anyway, so what do I care if they don’t like me a little more?’

“Those things don’t bother me. If I had hit five guys in a row for no reason, maybe that’s something you take back.

“So if I’m trying to pick fights or I’m plunking guys on purpose six or seven times a year, that’s when it’s too much.

FOOD Cheese-Filled Puff Pastry Cups

Heat the oven to 400 degrees F. Roll 4 ounces (a quarter) of the dough on a lightly floured counter into an 8-inch square. Chill for 15 to 20 minutes before trimming the edges and cutting the square into nine 3-inch squares. Ease the squares into a mini muffin tin, letting the edges flop over the top of each cup, being careful not to stretch the dough. Brush the flopped over edges lightly with an egg wash made by beating 1 large egg with 1 teaspoon water. Bake the cups, empty, for 15 to 20 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown. Meanwhile, soak 6 ounces pitted and chopped prunes in warm port wine for 20 minutes, then drain. Combine the prunes with equal parts crumbled Gorgonzola cheese and crumbled cooked bacon. Spoon some of the mixture into each cup, then serve.

By SARA MOULTON The Associated Press So you’ve decided to host an Oscars party this year, but you aren’t sure what to serve. Because obviously you want something extra fancy, something that will allow you to shine nearly as brightly as those folks on the red carpet.

My advice is to serve up a slate of hors d’oeuvres wrapped in puff pastry, the super-elegant dough perfected by – who else? – the French. It’s not exactly a breeze to produce. So here’s a simpler version, known variously as rough puff pastry, quick puff pastry or blitz puff pastry. It’s actually not much quicker than full blown puff pastry, but it certainly is much easier to prepare. This recipe yields about a pound of dough, enough to produce several dozen hors d’oeuvres. It is accompanied by some suggestions for fillings for those hors d’oeuvres.

Rough Puff Pastry

Start to finish: 4 hours (30 minutes active) Makes about 1 pound puff pastry 2 cups (8½ ounces) all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon table salt 12 tablespoons cold butter, cut into 1-inch pieces Ice water In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the butter and working quickly with your hands, break up the butter until it is

in small (about 1/2- to 3/4 -inch) chunks. Add 1/2 cup ice water and stir the mixture just until the water is incorporated. Squeeze the dough to see if it holds together. If it does not, add more ice water, a tablespoon at a time, just until the dough holds together when squeezed.

Quickly gather all of the dough together, dump it on the counter (it will look like a shaggy mess) and shape it into a rough rectangle. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill for 20 minutes.

Lightly dust the counter with flour. Unwrap the chilled dough and set it on the counter. Lightly dust the top of the dough and the rolling pin with a bit of flour. Roll the dough into a 6-by10-inch rectangle. Square off the edges by trimming them as needed. Starting with the short ends at the top and the bottom, fold the top third down to the center and the bottom third up to cover the first fold, like a business letter. Chill for 30 minutes.

Set the dough on a lightly floured counter, placing it so a short side is facing you. Roll out the dough as before, then fold again in the same manner. Chill for 30 minutes. Repeat this process two more times for a total of 4 roll and chill cycles.

Wrap well and chill for at least 1 hour before making the hors d’oeuvres. Using a sharp knife, cut the dough into 4 equal pieces and proceed with the recipe suggestions below, working with one piece of dough at a time (keeping the other pieces chilled), or wrap the dough in plastic wrap and foil and freeze it until ready to use.

Nutrition information per 1 ounce of pastry: 130 calories; 80 calories from fat (62 percent of total calories); 9 g fat (5 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 25 mg cholesterol; 40 mg sodium; 11 g carbohydrate; 0 g fiber; 0 g sugar; 2 g protein.

Cut the dough into 12 long triangles, then brush one side of the triangles liberally with Dijon mustard, avoiding the tip. Place a cocktail hot dog at the wide end of each triangle. Brush the tip with an egg wash made by beating 1 large egg with 1 teaspoon water. Roll up the triangle to enclose the hot dog. Brush the outside of the hot dog packages with the egg wash and sprinkle with caraway seeds. Chill for 15 minutes before baking. Arrange on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake on the oven’s middle shelf for 20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Smoked Salmon Napoleons

Heat the oven to 375 degrees F. Roll out 4 ounces (a quarter) of the dough on a lightly floured counter into an 8-inch square. Chill for 15 to 20 minutes. Transfer the square to a baking sheet lined with kitchen parchment. Prick the dough all over with a fork, then cover with another sheet of parchment. Place a second baking sheet, the same size as the first one, over the dough.

Bake on the oven’s middle shelf for 15 minutes.

Remove the top baking sheet and parchment, then bake for another 5 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove the pastry from the oven and let cool. Trim the square so it is even and cut it into 12 squares. For the filling: In a medium bowl, mix together 4 ounces chopped smoked salmon and 4 ounces of sour cream or creme fraiche. Stir in chopped, drained capers, lemon juice, minced shallots or scallions, a little horseradish or Dijon mustard, and salt and pepper, all to taste. Top a square with 1 teaspoon of the smoked salmon mixture (recipe below), then set a second square over that. Top the second square with another teaspoon of the mixture, then a third square of pastry. Finish the stack with a dab of sour cream and a sprinkle of chopped fresh chives.

in question. And if you are a punster, the titles will be a delight. A standout: Muppets Make Manhattans. Some of the cute drink names were arrived at with the help of Federle’s thousands of Twitter followers, who also voted on which proposed title for the book they liked best.

Recipes aren’t just cleverly titled; they also have cunning tie-ins to the films. For example, hibiscus tea in the cocktail Boozy and the Beast echoes the roses of “Beauty and the Beast.”

And Citizen Grain, named for the groundbreaking “Citizen Kane,” includes grain alcohol and just a touch of rose water. No promises that drinking it will help you better get to the bottom of the whole “Rosebud” thing, though.

Goldstein particularly was pleased with Star Wars-themed The Empire Likes Jack, which contains Jack Daniel’s, ice cream and root beer.

“It’s basically a root beer float. You’re dropping the light aspect, the vanilla ice cream, into the root beer, which is the dark side.”

Some sections took more time than others. “We had a lot of days sitting and eating take-in and just going over some stuff,” said Goldstein. An honest man, he admitted that was “a really good time.”

Federle, who grew up in San Francisco and Pittsburgh before moving to New York to dance on Broadway as a teenager, writes in multiple genres, including young adult fiction. His current project is co-writing “Tuck Everlasting,” a forthcoming Broadway musical based on the novel by Natalie Babbitt.

Like Goldstein, Federle seems happy in his work.

“Everything that got me sent to the principal’s office as a kid gets me paid now,” he said.

Silver shakers and the silver screen go back a long time. Think French 75 from “Casablanca” and Agent 007’s dry martinis.

So for those of you planning to drink along at home for the Feb. 28 showing of the Oscars this year, now might be a good time to get your cocktail act together. And Tim Federle, author of “Gone with the Gin,” has a few ideas about that.

From The Moon-Shining – moonshine, ruby red grapefruit juice, rum, that’s right, red rum – to Tequila Sunrise Boulevard (probably best NOT served poolside), the best-selling author has a line-up of cinematically inspired cocktails meant to be shaken, stirred and sipped with tongue planted firmly in cheek.

Bubbly as a Champagne cocktail, “Gone with the Gin” nonetheless has serious underpinnings. Federle worked with talented bartender Cody Goldstein, founder of Muddling Memories, a craft cocktail and bar consulting firm in New York. There also are useful sections on tools, techniques and even some fun food recipes.

“The approach was humorous and, yeah, they’d better taste good, too,” Federle said.

This cinematic cocktail collection follows Federle’s “Tequila Mockingbird,” which featured literary libations. For “Gone with the Gin,” Federle started by making a spreadsheet of the American Film Institute’s Top 100 films. Then, he looked for cocktail-friendly titles.

So “White Christmas” plus white Russian became a drink called White Russian Christmas. Then he and Goldstein looked for ways to tweak the recipes to match the movies. For the White Russian Christmas, the classic recipe – vodka, coffee liqueur and cream – got a seasonal twist of vodka, creme de menthe, coffee liqueur, eggnog and crushed candy cane for a garnish.

(And for those movie buffs for whom this particular drink conjures up only one flick, the book also contains a Big Le-Brewski, a vodka, coffee and cream of coconut concoction in honor of the white Russian loving Dude of “The Big Lebowski.”)

In all, Federle serves up 50 recipes organized by genre (drama, sci-fi, etc.), and each recipe comes with a brief but informative blurb about the movie

DeKALB – Two days before the Grateful Dead were to play at Evans Field House in 1977, Northern Illinois University’s Board of Regents rearranged its agenda to sign off on a contract with the band so ticket sales could begin.

Some regents balked at the terms of the deal, the Northern Star reported at the time.

“I understand it’s a matter of utmost importance,” Regent Chairman David Murray said. “But the fee, $30,000 plus 80 percent of the ticket receipts, is enough to make a regent flinch.”

Student Regent Rick Resnik asked the board to rearrange the agenda to consider the item first so ticket sales could start sooner. Resnik told the board the show would sell out and the concert committee would make $1,000 on the performance. University President Richard Nelson vouched for the concert committee’s “stable financial condition,” the Star reported at the time.

The regents approved the contract and the concert went on to make history as the largest and most expensive in NIU’s history at the time, according to reports in the Northern Star and Daily Chronicle.

The Grateful Dead was having a great year. The band’s most-hyped show – at Cornell University’s Barton Hall on May 8, 1977 – had been that spring. The DeKalb show also has received high praise.

The Grateful Dead’s performance has been well documented. Elizabeth Lundholm-Sury wrote a great piece in Northern Now in 2004 that recounted how the show was organized in less than a month by students, including NIU graduate Jim Dombek, who now leads the Sycamore School District 427 Board. At the time, Northern Star reporter Lilia Chacon interviewed the band’s cook. Fellow Northern Star writer G. Alexander summed up the show this way: “Anyone who missed the Grateful Dead Saturday night missed a spectacular show, period.

Phil Larsen, president of the commission, told the Daily Chronicle the commission had formed the previous fall “to keep students in class while waiting to go to court.” Demonstrations in May 1970 – in response to the Kent State University shooting – shut down the DeKalb

campus and NIU students were arrested by the busload, according to the DeKalb County Journal. The 1971 concert was canceled for some reason and $5,000 collected for tickets was refunded.

Even the 1977 show wasn’t without incident.

“Misuse of matches by persons traveling with the rock group the Grateful Dead resulted in a fire which did $435 damage to a room at the DeKalb Holiday Inn, 1212 W. Lincoln Hwy., early Sunday morning,” the Daily Chronicle reported Nov. 1. “DeKalb firemen were called to Room 238 about 6:14 a.m. They found the bed and surrounding areas in flames.

The room reportedly was reserved to Keith and Donna Godchaux.”

Keith Godchaux was the Dead’s keyboardist at the time and his wife, Donna, had joined the band as a vocalist.

“A spokesman for the motel said the occupants of the room reportedly lit a match while looking for something under the bed,” the Chronicle reported.

“Representatives of the band reportedly paid the motel management cash for the damage.”

DAILY CHRONICLE Little Lambs Preschool celebrated National Lutheran Schools Week, held Jan. 25 to 31, to proclaim and celebrate God’s work among students, families, faculty and staff.

The theme for Lutheran Schools week was “Life Together in Christ” with events planned to step beyond the routine of school ministry to share the mission of the Lutheran school. Themes throughout the week included: Pray Together, Serve Together, Reach Out Together, Play Together and Learn Together.

Children were invited to bring in a favorite prayer that they say at home. Prayer books were compiled of all of the Little Lambs family prayers.

There was a Special Guest Day where guests were invited to attend chapel and served a treat made by the students. Students also collected items for TAILS Humane Society and Family Service Agency. Students were invited to a special play day at the end of the week that included several stations like make your own cards, parachute play, science station, decorating cookies and a bingo station.

Little Lambs Preschool was established in 1996.

A ministry of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Little Lambs is based on the concept that a quality playbased education in a Christian setting is important for all children. The staff works in partnership with families in forming a foundation for the

learning opportunities. Field trips and special guest speakers are scheduled throughout the school year. Chapel services are held weekly. A fall open house, special program for Christmas, spring sings and a “graduation” picnic are also part of the year.

The school offers small class sizes with a fiveto-one student-to-adult ratio (nine to 10 children with two adults per class). Balanced programming allows staff to assist children in their style of learning. Each day provides a time for discovery through hands-on experiences and learning centers, group work and motor activities.

As a Christian preschool, Biblical themes are incorporated with music, science, art and stories into the daily schedule.

Classes are offered for children who are age 3 by Sept. 1, 2016, through age 5. The 3-year-old classes meet Tuesday and Thursday or Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon. Four-year old classes meet Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon.

‘Talk therapy’ helps ease stress Dear Dr. K: In your column you’ve mentioned something called cognitive restructuring. Can you explain this in more detail?

Dear Reader: Cognitive restructuring is one part of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a type of “talk therapy” that attempts to correct ingrained patterns of negative thoughts and behaviors.

CBT is the leading therapy for anxiety.

It also is used to treat stress, depression, eating disorders and many other problems.

Cognitive restructuring can help you change the way you think. That, in turn, can help change the way you feel.

To better understand how it works, try to remember your thoughts the last time you were late for work. Perhaps your first thought was simply “The train is late.”

But then that quickly transformed into “I’ll be late to work. I won’t make it to my meeting on time. My job is in jeopardy.”

This is an example of negative automatic thinking. Scenarios like this can activate the stress response almost as easily as a growling Doberman pinscher starting to run toward you.

Our negative thoughts often are riddled with irrational distortions. For example, you might have an “all or nothing” attitude. If you don’t perform flawlessly, you consider yourself a complete failure.

Another example is overgeneralization. If you do this, you take one negative event – such as rude service at a restaurant – as part of an endless pattern of dismaying circumstances and defeat.

Perhaps you exaggerate potential problems or mistakes until they take on the proportions of a catastrophe. Or you jump to conclusions: an observation your

For a person who is distressed by distortions and negative thoughts, cognitive restructuring might involve asking yourself: • Is this thought or belief true?

• Did I jump to a conclusion?

• What evidence do I actually have?

• What’s the worst that could happen?

• How else can I think about this?

Here’s an example of how it might work: If you get stuck in traffic on the way to work, first take a few deep breaths to reduce physical tension and step back from the stressor before you react. Then, reflect: “It’s just a traffic jam. I can handle this. It’s not worth getting this upset.”

Don’t assume you’ll be fired. Tell yourself, “I’ll just be a few minutes late. I’m doing the best I can. I can handle this.”

It might seem simplistic; it might sound too good to be true. And it doesn’t happen just like that: It’s not an instant cure. It takes work, focus, concentration and a talented therapist. And it takes time.

But the value of cognitive behavioral therapy, including cognitive restructuring, has been shown in scientific studies.

It is the most important new type of talk therapy I’ve seen in my professional career.

I feel bad about hitting him, but entirely justified in motive and intent. I really can’t think of another, more effective way of registering how offended I am in a situation like this.

Should I apologize? Should it be a qualified apology?
