RHONDA GILLESPIE rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois University professor Brianno Coller knows that engineering can be a challenging subject to master. But the fun-loving technology enthusiast found a way to engage students in the subject, and he was rewarded for his efforts.

Coller recently was named the 2015 Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.

NIU nominated Coller for the award, and the honor was the second consecutive one for NIU. It has brought attention to the accomplished Coller, who counts among his achievements being a consultant for the 2014 Winter Olympics and designing two video games to help his students master advanced engineering, math and technology concepts.

Rhonda Gillespie: How do you feel about the Professor of the Year honor?

Brianno Coller: To tell you the truth, I feel a little overexposed.

But it makes me feel good. It’s affirmation of a lot of the hard work I put in.

I’m kind of wondering why I got it. I have a lot great colleagues here who do a lot of wonderful work.

It feels a little strange to be singled out.

But, nonetheless, it feels good.

RG: You’re not just an engineer or an instructor, you’re also an inventor. Is this something that you always wanted to do?

BC: No, I wouldn’t say so.

For most of my growing up, I just cared about soccer and skiing.

But one day, I took a trip to San Francisco, and I was just amazed by those bridges and the buildings.

I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve got to be the person who builds those and designs those things.’

So that’s when I caught the bug, I guess. I was about 13 or so.

RG: How do you use gadgets to engage students in engineering and science?

BC: I’m in this field because I think it’s really interesting and fun, and if I can portray that funness, then I think the education is more effective.

When students get here, we teach them all this math and physics – because it’s absolutely necessary to become an engineer.

But you get lost in these subjects that can be really dry or really difficult to wrap your head around.

But if you can apply the math and physics to fun things, then it can ease the learning and connect abstract ideas to things that are interesting.

If you can make it fun, then you can get students to invest the time as well.

RG: How did you come to design the video games?

BC: They are video games for learning.

One day, I was teaching this very theoretical course. It’s a hard course.

So I brought in this video ... and the students were just on the edge of their seats.

I watched the students watch the video.

Then I thought, ‘That’s what I should do. I should make a video game.’

So I made a couple of video games where students are actually applying theoretical concepts that they learn in class to these simulated physical systems.

Voter apathy longstanding trend inhibiting democracy, some experts say

DeKALB – A look at the local March primary election reveals more of the same: hardly any new candidates in DeKalb County and the usual ones running unopposed.

It’s a longstanding trend, but one that some experts said is eating away at democracy.

“There are a variety of reasons why candidates may not be running for office. But, certainly, if voters don’t have an option, it’s difficult for them

to speak through their vote if [they’re] not happy with the job that the incumbent is doing,” said Dr. Matt Streb, chairman of the political science department at Northern Illinois University.

It easily can be expected that Maureen Josh will be the county’s court clerk again, Dennis Miller will continue on as coroner and several county board members will get another four years in office. And, most likely, the county will send state Rep. Bob Pritchard, R-Hinckley, back to Springfield. All are running unopposed this

election cycle – again.

In fact, Josh, for example, has not faced a challenger since at least 2008, when she went on to wallop her Democratic challenger by getting 62 percent of the vote. Pritchard has ridden comfortably to victory for at least the past four election cycles. He has run opposed – every two years – since at least 2010. In 2008, Pritchard faced a Green Party candidate in what turned out to be a blowout victory.

“If you believe that a major function of democracy is to hold your elected officials accountable, it’s difficult to

do that when you don’t have contested races,” Streb said.

He said some of the reasons people may not run for office include the hours and pay involved. Also, being a public official means being, in part, an open book.

“Most of your local offices are not full-time positions, they’re not [high] paying jobs, they take up a lot of time, and people can be opened up to a lot of criticism,” Streb said.

Continued from page 3 sheriff, clerk, treasurer and state’s attorney offices are full-time positions, each with salaries of more than $90,000. The office of coroner is a halftime position, with a $62,000 salary.

But that officeholder also is head of the Emergency Services Disaster Agency and is paid $45,000, pushing the total salary more than $100,000.

But county board members are part time and paid $85 for each county board meeting they attend. The chairman – a position currently held by Mark Pietrowksi, who is running unopposed for re-election – gets $10,200 a year. And there are other nominal pay rates for the board’s vice chairman and heads of committees.

“It’s not always an easy thing to serve in local government,” Streb said.

The electoral ubiquity sometimes has meant that people don’t bother to vote, local community organizer Dave Rathke said.

In fact, voter turnout in the 2014 primary was only 15 percent, according to county election results.

Only 8,642 people cast ballots – out of 57,903 registered voters at that time. Election watchers say turnout

“I think people have become disengaged in politics,” said Rathke, who helps organize the Bernie Sanders campaign in DeKalb.

There are some newcomers to the county board races.

Because four incumbents won’t seek reelection, there will be at least that many new faces on the 24-mem-

ber board.

But the process for some of them getting elected will be quite familiar: running unopposed.

According to county candidate information, there will be a Republican contest in the District 12 race with two vying to replace Jeffrey Metzger.

Roy Plote is running unopposed in District 11 to take over the seat from John Gudmunson.

Republican Jonathan Schmarje and Democrat John J. Wett both are unopposed in the partisan District 2 race, where incumbent Republican John Emerson announced he would be moving on from the board.

Money is another factor experts said keeps people – as candidates or voters – away from elections.

The fire has already been turned up in the hotly contested state’s attorney race.

Three Republicans will square off next month, with one looking to go on to challenge incumbent Democrat Richard Schmack in the general election.

Candidate Rick Amato already has raised more than $18,000 for his campaign, and has spent some $9,000, according to financial documents filed with the state board of elections.

Candidate Clay Campbell, however, reported raising only $1,055 as of Dec. 31, 2015, the last date of quarterly filings.

Charles Rea reported having zero dollars for his campaign.

“The power of money and politics has kind of washed over us,” Rathke said. “We’ve got a serious problem here with how do we revitalize democracy. ... There’s no easy answer.

But we have to figure out how to make politics relevant.”

THEODORE H. TEISLER

Born: Nov. 25, 1924; in Chicago, IL Died: Feb. 19, 2016; in Sycamore, IL Theodore “Ted” Herbert Teisler, 91, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2016, at Lincolnshire Place in Sycamore, IL. after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Born Nov. 25, 1924, in Chicago, to Esther (Neilsen) Teisler and Herbert Teisler, he spent his early years in Chicago.

After he married Lucille Evelyn Browning in 1950, the couple moved to LaGrange Park, IL, where they lived almost continuously for 58 years, spending several years in a high-rise apartment overlooking the Wrigley Building.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille; daughters, Julia Fauci (Dominick) of DeKalb and Pamela Rice (Alan) of New York City; and a grandson, Marcel Fauci, of Champaign.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father; and older sister, Winnifred Stelzer.

Ted served with distinction in the Army Signal Corps during World War II, attending the Ray Vogue School of Design under the GI Bill after the war.

A stint with Leo Burnett – the famous advertising agency – gave him easy entry to commercial-art positions throughout Chicago ... retiring as art director for the Wrigley Gum Company at age 63.

He designed a famous Cubby Bear logo, the Cubs’ season tickets and programs, and the paint job for Wrigley Field.

Besides playing the clarinet, flute, and saxophone since his Army days, he exhibited high-level expertise in electronics, carpentry, and abstract art.

He immersed himself in the radio-control airplane hobby, featured several times in national magazines.

The first to design a novelty model airplane called the “flying lawnmower,” he was truly a Renaissance man.

Active in the civil rights and peace movements, he marched with Martin Luther King in Chicago.

He will be greatly missed by friends and loved-ones alike.

A special “thank you” goes out to everyone at Lincolnshire Place where Ted spent his remaining years.

A life-long Unitarian and self-proclaimed liberal, Ted donated his body to science.

A memorial service is pending.

DeKalb County sheriff’s K9, Odin, gets new vest DAILY CHRONICLE news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – A manufacturer and a nonprofit teamed up to get a bullet- and stab-resistant vest for the hairiest crime fighter at the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Odin, a sheriff’s K9 that has been working with Deputy Jason Johnson since May 2014, was awarded the $1,800 protective vest through an incentive program offered by nonprofit Vested Interest in K9s, and manufacturer Armor Express, as part of a program in which one free vest is awarded for every 15 vests bought by the charity.

Vests were donated to K9s in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, North Dakota, South Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

The program is open to dogs employed in the U.S. with law enforcement or related agencies that are certified and at least 20 months of age.

New K9 graduates, and K9s with expired vests, are eligible to participate.

Each vest has a value between $1,795 and $2,234, a five-year warranty and an average weight of 4 to 5 pounds, according to the release.

Johnson and Odin attended a 10week Basic Canine Training Program through the Illinois State Police.

Every six months, the K9 team travels to Springfield to recertify in each category, according to the release.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office has had a K9 program since 1974.

Sheriff Roger Scott went to the St. Louis Police Academy with the county’s first K9, Rex Von Victor.

A second K9, Prince of Fortune, was added to the DeKalb County program in 1975.

The sheriff’s office has the oldest continual K9 program in northern Illinois outside of Chicago, according to the release.

DeKALB – Snow might keep some people indoors, but not Rich Stueber.

With any accumulation of the white fluffy stuff, he grabs his snow gear and heads outside.

Stueber, a senior mechanical engineering student at Northern Illinois University, is the president of the NIU Clean Snowmobile Team. Stueber, who has been snowmobiling since he was age 3, describes the winter activity as his passion. He plans to remain involved in snowmobiling after graduation and hopes to have a job working with renewable energy.

Stueber and the snowmobile team will attend the SAE International Clean Snowmobile Challenge from March 7 to 12 in Houghton, Michigan.

The challenge, an engineering design competition, asks college students to re-engineer an existing snowmobile to reduce emissions and noise. The modified snowmobiles will compete in a variety of events including emissions, noise, fuel economy/endurance, acceleration, handling, static display, cold start and design. The goal of the challenge is to have students develop snowmobiles acceptable for use in environmentally sensitive areas, such as national parks.

On Feb. 11, the G.K. Trailblazers Snowmobile Club presented the NIU Clean Snowmobile Team with four checks: one from the club for $400, two from individual club members for $100 each; and one from the Region 5 Snowmobile Club for $250.

The NIU Clean Snowmobile Team hopes to raise $8,000 to cover expenses of creating and modifying their snowmobile for the challenge. In previous years, the team received money from the university. Because of the state’s budget impasse, the team did not receive any financial support from NIU this year.

Stueber spoke to MidWeek reporter Katrina Milton on the telephone about

Milton: Why do you ride and work on snowmobiles?

Stueber: I’ve been snowmobiling since I was 3 years old. I enjoy riding, I love the atmosphere and the community. It’s my passion. I like being out with friends and family, going out to have a good time. It’s unlike anything else I’ve ever done. I haven’t met a snowmobiler I didn’t like.

There are usually about 22 teams, and we’re the only team from Illinois.

There are teams from all over the U.S. and Canada. Last year, there was even a team from Finland. It’s interesting to hear and learn what others do. We get to socialize and interact with people from all around the world. About 90 percent of the students that compete are engineering students, and it’s nice to learn their different perspectives.

As a team, we will give a design presentation to tell the judges why and how we did what we did. We will also present an MSRP report, explaining how much money we spent and why.

Milton: What is the snowmobile that you will enter into the challenge?

Stueber: We have a 2014 Polaris Indy,

and it’s totally customized. We added a catalytic converter to the exhaust system to reduce emissions and added modifications to the track to increase rolling efficiency. The body is also custom, and we have a wrap with sponsor logos and the names of the people who support us.

More than 50 organizations like art galleries, theaters, historic buildings and public murals and sculptures will be included in the proposed ACE corridor map, including things like the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center.

“Our intention is to draw attention to not only the cool things happening on the university campus, but in the community as well,” Jenny Jeep Johnson said. “So there is a more open flow between the two areas, because it’s not really two areas.

It’s one area. We all live here.”

The Arts Council has planned six short-term projects, which include implementing a “First Fridays” program where art-related activities would be planned and restaurants or stores in the area would be encouraged to offer sales, special menus or entertainment in their spaces.

More public art also could be on the way, in the form of an outdoor sculpture exhibition and “liquid sunshine” display, which is a type of

rain activated art.

About 30 different designs will be stenciled around 50 to 60 different locations and will only be visible in the rain.

Improvements to the Egyptian Theatre are also on the list.

The city of DeKalb has funded a feasibility study to determine the historic theatre’s potential and future profitability.

Whether or not to fund air-conditioning for the building was a hot topic among DeKalb City Council members last year and Nerad said the theatre’s board is open to potential future changes.

“Our intent is to utilize the theatre to its fullest potential,” Nerad said. “We are going to explore all avenues to evaluate the pros and cons of each option. ... We know there is a lot of potential.”

DeKALB – The city could grow its arts community, and draw new businesses and visitors by creating a designated arts, culture and entertainment corridor, so DeKalb’s City Council will consider the official recognition of one at its Monday council meetings.

“So far, everyone we have talked to has been really excited about this,” Alex Nerad, executive director of the Egyptian Theatre, said. “Those within the arts community have known for a long time that we have a lot of artistic and cultural assets here and are excited to work together and start showing the community – and those from outside DeKalb – what the community has to offer.”

The DeKalb Area Arts Council board of directors, which include Nerad and DeKalb’s City Clerk Jennifer Jeep Johnson, have asked the city to make the proposed arts corri-

dor official. Other board members of the group include marketing professionals, local business owners and Northern Illinois University arts professors.

The plan was presented at a DAAC Arts Summit in November, where nearly 100 people met to discuss future plans for establishing an arts scene in DeKalb.

“We have a list of over 30 different galleries, museums and venues in the corridor,” Nerad said. “But this would be the first we all started working to really brand it all together.”

The proposed corridor stretches down Lincoln Highway, beginning west of Stadium Drive and ending at Seventh Street in DeKalb’s downtown area.

Over the course of the next year, the DAAC hopes to create marketing materials, directional and informational signs and historical markers for the cultural and arts attractions along the 2 and a half-mile stretch.

STATE 8 months and counting: No clear path on budget saga

By IVAN MORENO The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner’s attempt last week to spur lawmakers into action left no clear way forward in Illinois’ seemingly never-ending budget saga.

The state remains far from passing a budget for the current year – let alone next year’s – and months of legislative hand-wringing has done nothing to change the predicament the state finds itself in.

In the latest chapter, Rauner urged lawmakers to make a choice now: Pass the business-friendly reforms he wants in exchange for his approval of a full $36 billion budget, which would include raising taxes, or allow the Republican to make $3.5 billion in cuts from the spending plan however he chooses.

But Rauner’s proposition in his annual budget address appeared to do little to move Democrats who control the Legislature.

Woman dies after setting herself afire with fuel

BUFFALO GROVE – Police said a woman in suburban Chicago has died after dousing herself with gasoline and setting herself ablaze.

Buffalo Grove police said the woman died in a hospital Saturday, a day after the fire. Her name wasn’t released.

Police said the woman poured gasoline onto her clothing and body and set herself afire at a Circle K station.

But there’s no guarantee Rauner’s own proposed measures will be given a hearing by House Speaker Michael Madigan and other Democrats who control the schedule. And even if they’re heard, they’re a long way from making it through the legislative process. Before the March 15 primaries, the House is meeting only three times,

Program aims to boost bond between black fathers, sons

CHICAGO – Chicago is set to host a federally funded program designed to strengthen the bond between young African-American boys and their fathers who don’t live with them.

STILL SPENDING, TAB GROWS

Even without a budget, court orders and other mandated spending on essential services like health care means about 90 percent of state government is still being funded. But that’s plunging Illinois further into debt because the state is spending based on revenue levels from last year, when the individual Illinois income tax rate was at 5 percent, not the current rate of 3.75 percent.

Illinois faces a roughly $5 billion budget deficit this fiscal year, which ends June 30, and its unpaid bill backlog could reach almost $26 billion by 2020 if current revenue and spending policies continue.

Legislative economists will brief lawmakers March 1 on the state’s latest revenue projections, which will influence budget negotiations. For some, the lack of progress has already been disastrous and others are on the verge of disaster. Many social service programs have shut down and Chicago State University has said it will

GOLDEN – A descendant of the man who built the historical Golden Windmill in western Illinois has discovered letters indicating the mill shipped flour worldwide more than a century ago.

Carolyn Ware was cleaning out the attic of her father’s Clayton home and found letters to her great-grandfather, H.H. Emminga, from 1889 to 1891. H.H. Emminga took over the operation in 1878, five years after his father built the mill but returned to Germany.

Bloomington mulls $50M streets/sewer program

Gunman kills 6 in shootings at car dealership, restaurant

By JEFF KAROUB The Associated Press KALAMAZOO, Mich. – A gunman who seemed to choose his victims at random opened fire outside an apartment complex, a car dealership and a restaurant in Michigan, killing six people in a rampage that lasted nearly seven hours, police said.

Authorities identified the shooter as Jason Dalton, a 45-year-old Uber driver and former insurance adjuster who police said had no criminal record. They could not say what motivated him to target victims with no apparent connection to him or to each other in the Saturday night shootings.

“How do you go and tell the families of these victims that they weren’t targeted for any reason other than they were there to be a target?” Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting said Sunday at a news conference.

Dalton, who was arrested in Kalamazoo following a massive manhunt, was expected to be arraigned Monday on murder charges.

Fifteen minutes after that, five people Jason Dalton were gunned down in the parking lot of a Cracker Barrel restaurant, Matyas said.

Four of them died.

“These are random murders,” Matyas said.

Dalton was arrested without incident about 12:40 a.m.

Sunday after a deputy spotted his vehicle driving through downtown Kalamazoo after leaving a bar parking lot, authorities said.

Matyas declined to disclose anything found in the vehicle except for a semi-automatic handgun.

By midday, authorities were investigating a Facebook post that indicated the suspect was driving for Uber during the manhunt and had taken at least one fare, Getting said.

A spokeswoman for Uber confirmed that Dalton had driven for the company in the past, but she declined to say whether he was driving Saturday night.

Uber prohibits both passengers and drivers from possessing guns of any kind in a vehicle. Anyone found to be in violation of the policy may be prohibited from using or driving for the service.

A man who knows Dalton said he was a married father of two who never showed any signs of violence.

Gary Pardo Jr., whose parents live across the street from Dalton in Kalamazoo Township, described him as a family man who seemed fixated on cars and often worked on them.

“He would go a month without mowing his lawn but was very meticulous with his cars,” Pardo said, explaining that Dalton, at times, owned a Chevrolet Camaro and two Hummer SUVs.

With the last budget, Obama still in denial President Obama’s proposed record $1.4 trillion budget landed on Capitol Hill last week, so dead on arrival it’s a pity real trees had to die in its creation.

The budget proposes to increase taxes over the next decade by a whopping $2.6 trillion. And just to show how serious Obama was about this effort, that’s nearly double the $1.4 trillion he proposed and failed to get in last year’s budget. Hmmm.

So let’s say the Congress actually lost its senses and went along with the tax and spending plan for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. Obama’s own forecast shows it would run a $9.8 trillion deficit over the next decade.

“President Obama will leave office having never proposed a budget that balances – ever,” House Speaker Paul Ryan said. “This isn’t even a budget so much as it is a progressive manual for growing the federal government at the expense of hardworking Americans.

“The president’s oil tax alone would raise the average cost of gasoline by 24 cents per gallon, while hurting jobs and a major sector of our economy.”

The proposed $10 a barrel tax on crude oil – $319 billion over the next decade – would be used to fund “alternative transportation” programs aimed at halting, of course, global warming.

The president finally did awaken from his seven-year slumber to discover the cybersecurity threat on our doorstep. The hacking of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management and its files on millions of employees and applicants and that nasty hacking and cyberattack on Sony Pictures apparently tipped him off that there is a problem.

So the budget will include $3 billion to, as Obama put it in an op-ed in Tuesday’s Wall Street Journal, “kick-start an overhaul of federal computer systems.”

“It is no secret that, too often, government IT is like an Atari game in an Xbox world,” he added.

And he proposes to create a new federal position of chief information security officer. Again, a breathtaking, why-did-no-one-think-of-that-before moment.

In this his final year in office, you’d think President Obama might want to “get real” on the budget.

But why start now?

Who better than the pope?

Concluding his swing through Mexico with a pointed stop at the border city of Juarez, Pope Francis bemoaned the global “human tragedy” that forces people to risk death to try to gain sanctuary in safer places.

He called migrants “the brothers and sisters of those expelled by poverty and violence, by drug trafficking and criminal organizations.”

Not that the pope’s call for charity is likely to have an immediate calming effect.

In this country, the conservative electorate is in the midst of a massive meltdown over the nation’s changing demographics.

Make no mistake about it: Stagnant wages and economic uncertainty have fueled the fires of outrage, but the flames were lit by a deep-seated resentment over a slow-moving but obvious cultural shift as white Americans slide toward losing their majority status.

The election of President Barack Obama is among the more striking

signs of that shift, but there are others: Among the wealthiest and most influential pop culture figures are two black women known only by their first names, Oprah and Beyonce.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which hands out the Oscars, has been hit by protests over its lack of diversity. Interracial couples, and their kids, are routinely featured in TV commercials for common household products.

But the “browning of America,” as some social scientists have called it, has not been propelled by growing numbers of native-born blacks, but rather by increasing numbers of immigrants from Asia, Africa and the rest of the Americas. Of those, Latinos constitute the largest and most visible group.

That helps to explain why immigration has occupied a central place in this presidential campaign – and why it threatens to tear apart the Republican Party.

Its leaders have spent decades pandering to the fears of those white Americans who are least comfortable with changes in the social and cultural hierarchy.

Instead of displaying a leadership that might have eased the anxiety of white conservatives, GOP candidates broadened the old “Southern strategy” to disparage not only na-

tive-born black Americans but also immigrants of color.

Now, those GOP voters are displaying a xenophobia that has pushed the party even further to the right – and which threatens to alienate voters of color for decades to come.

Even as Republican strategists tear their hair out over the hateful tone emanating from the campaign trail, the candidates, with a couple of exceptions, keep up their harsh rhetoric.

While The Donald has displayed the most outrageous bigotry, including a call to bar all Muslims from entry, his rivals have tried not to be out-Trumped. Sen. Marco Rubio, for example, has disavowed a plan, one he once endorsed, to grant legal status to undocumented workers.

President Obama and the Democratic contenders, both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, have pushed back against the biases oozing from the GOP hustings, but they have no credibility with ultraconservative voters.

Perhaps there are still a few of them who will be swayed by the loving and generous message of Pope Francis.

Clinton must overcome timidity on minimum wage On the campaign trail, Hillary Clinton has eloquently defined workers’ rights as human rights. She could assert both more forcefully by championing a stronger federal minimum wage of $15 an hour.

So far, Clinton has proposed lifting the federal hourly minimum to $12, from its current level of $7.25 an hour.

Bernie Sanders is pushing for $15.

Under both proposals, the increase would be phased in over five years, which means 2022 at the earliest, assuming that legislation to raise the minimum becomes law in 2017, the first year of the next president’s term.

Reasonable people can disagree about the ideal level for the minimum wage.

There is no doubt, however, that the longer it takes to get to a new minimum, the higher it should be, and that by any political or practical calculation, 2022 is a long way off.

This alone argues for Sanders’

more generous proposal.

Clinton has argued that $15 might be too high for employers in low-wage states, causing them to lay off workers or make fewer hires.

There is no proof for or against that position.

There is solid empirical evidence showing that moderate increases in the minimum wage do not harm employment.

But there is no similarly rigorous research on the effects of large increases, mainly because there haven’t been very many, either in the United States or internationally.

The question is what to do in the face of uncertainty.

Clinton’s argument for $12 overlooks the fact that a long phase-in would give employers and the economy time to adjust to a higher, $15 minimum.

Her minimum-wage proposal is also inconsistent with her larger agenda to increase middle-class

wages.

Historically, a robust minimum is one that equals at least half the average wage for typical workers, recently $21 an hour.

Assuming Clinton’s plan raised middle-class wages – through profit-sharing, paid sick and family leave, updated overtime-pay rules, fair-scheduling policies and labor-law enforcement – then $15 in 2022 would be a logical goal for the federal minimum wage.

But instead of embracing $15, Clinton fights on for $12, saying that states could set their own, higher minimums.

That is cold comfort. Experience has shown that without a robust federal minimum, state minimums also tend to be inadequate.

Today, 21 states still do not have minimums higher than the federal level, and of the 29 that do, none have minimums high enough to cover local living expenses for an individual

worker.

Worse, Clinton’s stance misses the big picture, which is that the risk in keeping the minimum too low is bigger than the risk of raising it too high.

One reason a third of Americans today live in or near poverty is that many jobs in the United States do not pay enough to live on. This is due in part to the steady erosion in the minimum wage – even as labor productivity, corporate profits and executive compensation have gone up.

A raise to $12 an hour in 2022, or a mere $24,000 a year for a full-time job, would only lock in that dynamic.

Even a $15 minimum works out to only $31,000 a year.

Economic obstacles are not standing in the way of a $15-an-hour minimum wage. Misplaced caution and political timidity are. The sooner Clinton overcomes those, the stronger her candidacy will be.

Before Pope Francis spoke a single word at the Mexican border, Donald Trump had – quite predictably – denounced the pontiff’s message.

The real estate mogul and former reality-TV star has built his campaign for the GOP presidential nomination on an ugly nativism, so the moment was tailor-made for him.

The counter-messaging only escalated after the pontiff told reporters that anyone who wants to build a border wall, as Trump has infamously proposed, “is not Christian.”

That prompted a retort from Trump, of course: “For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful,” he said.

(If the pontiff’s remarks were recorded correctly, he didn’t say Trump isn’t “a” Christian. In other words, he didn’t question the faith to which Trump ascribes; rather, the pope described Trump’s behavior as failing to follow Christian principles.)

Trump-isms notwithstanding, Pope Francis couldn’t have picked a better moment for his message of compassion toward migrants.

This presidential campaign season has revealed some unseemly passions roiling the American electorate – especially on the right; those resentments needed the criti-

SCENE ‘Hack’ for a good cause at CodeAcross DeKalb DAILY CHRONICLE Northern Illinois University students, DeKalb community members, civic leaders, computer coders and tech enthusiasts will come together March 5 in Founders Library for the first ever CodeAcross DeKalb, a free, day-long event exploring how public data can be harnessed for public good.

The day will begin at 10 a.m. with a quick introduction to the idea of “civic hacking,” the practice of writing programs that access publicly available data – on anything from health and crime to infrastructure and economic development – and try to make it more accessible and useful for citizens, nonprofits and government.

Anyone interested in attending can register at tinyurl.com/ dekalb2016. Free parking will be available in the parking deck and lot near the library. Participants need to bring a computer, a snack or lunch and enthusiasm for addressing local challenges. By the end of the day, new computer applications based on participants’ ideas will be underway.

Participants do not need coding experience.

The event is the brainchild of a national nonprofit called Code for America. Similar CodeAcross gatherings will be taking place all across the country.

Renowned civic hacker Christopher Whitaker, Code for America’s Chicago “brigade captain,” will deliver the DeKalb keynote.

In 2013, Whitaker was named a White House Champion of Change for his community-based tech work.

After Whitaker’s speech, a city of DeKalb official will suggest possible uses for local data that already is available.

For the rest of the day, participants will break into teams, roll up their sleeves and get to work on possible hacks. Before going home, each team will give a short presentation about its progress.

DeKalb locks up second, Leman takes first in floor

ecarifio@shawmedia.com PALATINE – The crowd was behind her, she was seeing what she need to do, and she did it.

Aleah Leman of the DeKalb-Sycamore girls gymnastics co-op team won the floor exercise at the IHSA state gymnastics meet, one of six medals won by the Barbs in the event’s second day on Saturday.

Leman finished Saturday with three medals – plus was third in the all-around Friday – freshman Madison Hickey had two, freshman Lauren Leman had one and the second-place Barbs had big dreams for the future.

“It’s pretty surreal, exciting,” co-op coach Andy Morreale said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better result. The girls kind of rolled through the whole meet. A couple of mistakes, but I think we finished where we should have.”

It was just the second trip to state for the Barbs, who are in their sixth year of competing.

Aleah Leman, only a junior, failed to defend her title in the vault, but won the championship in the floor exercise with a 9.725, well ahead of Barrington’s Abby Hassanov’s second-place score of 9.65. She took third in the vault and also finished in a second-place tie in the balance beam.

Hickey finished in a third-place tie in the uneven bars and fifth in the floor, while Lauren Leman was fifth in the bars.

Aleah Leman said she felt humbled after her performance after a year she said saw dramatic improvement from start to end, culminating in an energetic floor routine that got the crowd involved as the second-to-last performer in the event.

“I felt really strong going into it,” she said. “Before each pass, I just took a deep breath, saw what I needed to do and I got it done.”

Morreale said he was impressed with Leman’s routine.

“Oh man, my heart is still pumping. What a routine,” Morreale said.

“That’s the best she’s ever performed that routine. It’s pretty exciting when the crowd gets into it like that. She has that energy to feed off of.”

In addition to the winning floor score, the elder Leman recorded a 9.75 in the vault and a 9.45 on the beam.

Morreale said nerves have been an issue for Hickey at times this year, but the performance Saturday should go a long way toward taking care of that. Hickey agreed.

“Especially in club, since we don’t have meets a lot, this is definitely going to help me a lot,” Hickey said.

Lauren Leman got a 9.425 on the bars to take fifth for her first prep medal.

“She did a great job on bars,” Morreale said. “She couldn’t have done a better routine. I thought a better routine today than yesterday.”

DeKalb upped its team score to 148.075, behind only Prairie Ridge’s 150.6. Carmel was third with a 146.775.

With a second-place finish and seven medals won, all by players returning next year, Morreale said he’s pumped for next season.

“I think to chase Prairie Ridge, that should be our goal,” Morreale said. “Coming back, I expect them to be better. And we have some young kids, some eighth graders coming up, and some that were injured this year that didn’t compete. So we should be better.”

Morreale said he hopes the strong showing at the state’s highest level will help spur interest in the club.

The Barbs weren’t able to field a junior varsity team this season, but Morreale said he hopes the numbers go up next year.

“I hope the excitement in the city really spurs kids to want to come out for the high school team,” Morreale said. “You don’t necessarily have to be like Aleah. Nobody has five Aleahs. You have to have kids fill in the ranks, be JV as freshmen and sophomores. Again, not everyone is going to walk in like Maddie Hickey.”

Kaneland’s Kedzie pinned in title match, takes second in Class 2A

By DAILY CHRONICLE sports@daily-chronicle.com Kaneland junior Austin Kedzie’s shot at a state championship fell just short.

The Knights’ star 106-pounder fell in the title match to undefeated Travis Ford-Melton on Saturday night at the Class 2A IHSA wrestling state finals at the State Farm Center in Champaign.

Chicago Heights Marian’s FordMelton, who defeated Kedzie at 113 earlier in the season, pinned the Kaneland junior in the second period to improve to 43-0 as a freshman on the season. Kedzie ends the year with a second-place finish and a record of 38-8.

“Those are the guys that you want to wrestle,” Kaneland coach Tom Orosco said about Ford-Melton. “He’s no joke.

You know that if you can beat a guy like that, you earned the championship.”

Kedzie was one of two Kaneland wrestlers to medal on the day. Senior George Strang (152) worked his way through the consolation bracket and ended with a sixth-place finish after losing 5-0 to junior Kyle Goin of Washington.

“George is one of the toughest kids in our program,” Orosco said. “He’s hard-nosed and will run through a brick wall for you. I’m really excited to see how he does as a freshman next year.”

Strang, who ended the season, 3413, plans on wrestling at University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse next year.

Joining Kedzie and Strang in the final day of the tournament was Kaneland junior Riley Vanik, who was knocked out of the consolation bracket at 170. He finished the season 36-8.

Kedzie, however, dominated his way to the championship match.

DeKalb-Sycamore boys qualify two individuals, two relays for state swim meet

By DAILY CHRONICLE sports@daily-chronicle.com The DeKalb-Sycamore co-op boys swimming team is sending two individuals and two relays to the biggest meet of the year.

The Barbs took first place in the 200-yard medley relay at the IHSA St. Charles North Sectional on Saturday afternoon, qualifying for the IHSA state championships.

The medley relay, consisting of seniors Daniel Hein and Jacob Bjork, sophomore Riley Lohse and junior Dylan Rasmussen, finished first with

a time of 1 minute, 35.21 seconds. The 400-yard freestyle relay of Hein, Bjork, Lohse and senior Austin Bockman also qualified for the state meet by finishing in second place (3:12.67).

Individually, Hein took first in the 100-yard butterfly (49.36 seconds) and the 100-yard backstroke (49.39). Hein was second at state last season in both events, with one last shot to take first in each event before graduating.

Bjork also qualified for two individual events, taking second in the 100-yard freestyle (47.33) and third in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.88). He was ninth at state last season in the breaststroke.

As a team, DeKalb finished third in the meet with 189 points, well behind first-place St. Charles East (284.5).

The state championships are on Feb. 26-27 at Evanston Township.

BOYS BASKETBALL

IC wins finale: The Timberwolves capped their regular season with a 63-39 win over IMSA on Saturday in Shabbona.

Kevin Jordal scored a team-high 19 points and Trevor Guerra added 15 for the Timberwolves, who improved to 18-9 overall.

Kenseth. Kenseth tried to throw a block but Hamlin wedged into the middle between Kenseth and Truex, and Kenseth had to save his car from wrecking.

“The last thing I wanted to do was wreck off turn four with my Toyota teammates and none of us win,” Hamlin said. “We had talked about a plan overnight to just work together, work together and I’ve never seen it executed so flawlessly.

“I said with two to go that we have

to get the team victory no matter what it takes and I essentially was trying to go up there and block (Harvick) to keep him from getting to those guys.”

But the push from Harvick was so strong, Hamlin was able to race for the win.

Truex wasn’t sure what he could have done differently.

“It hurts a little bit,” Truex said. “I think the only thing I should have done different was been a little more aggres-

sive coming to the line, holding Denny up the race track. That last split second when he pulled off my door, that was it.

It gave him that couple inches to beat me to the line.

“It’s hard to make those decisions.

Live and learn. I think if I get in that position again, I’ll do it a little bit differently.”

Toyotas swept the podium as Truex was second, and Busch third. Edwards was fifth as Toyota took four of the top five spots. It comes three months after Busch gave Toyota its first championship.

“This was our 10th try at the Daytona 500,” said David Wilson, president of Toyota Racing Development, who called the win the biggest in Toyota history – trumping even the 2003 Indianapolis 500 victory.

“When we came into the sport, we struggled. We were not ready. We didn’t know. And so it’s taken time for us to collectively build an organization of winning races and competing for championships.”

Kenseth faded to 14th.

“They don’t get much more crushing than that,” Kenseth said. “If I can’t win, I want my teammate to win.

There’s a million things you could do differently, but I did what I thought I should do at the time to try to win.

We finished terrible, but that was the move I thought I had to make to try to preserve the win.”

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – When he was in second grade, Denny Hamlin wrote a letter to himself wishing for a Daytona 500 victory.

His childlike cursive stated he wanted to win the race in 1998. Hamlin had to wait considerably longer, just not as long as team owner Joe Gibbs.

With a Hail Mary move Sunday, Hamlin ended Gibbs’ 23-year drought at the Daytona 500. It gave Hamlin his first Daytona 500 victory in 10 tries, and Toyota its first in “The Great American Race.”

“You couldn’t have written a better ending,” Hamlin said. “It’s the pinnacle of my career, for sure.”

Hamlin pulled out of line with a lap to go and chased down teammate Matt Kenseth. He staved off Kenseth’s block, and wedged between Kenseth and Martin Truex Jr. Hamlin stayed in the gas for a doorto-door dash to the checkered flag that ended in a photo finish with Truex. He beat Truex by 0.010 seconds, the closest finish in the history of the race.

“I don’t know where that came from, I don’t know what happened, I can’t even figure out what I did,” Hamlin said. “It all just came together. But this wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for Toyotas sticking together all race long.”

Gibbs, who in November celebrated with Kyle Busch the team’s first Sprint Cup title in a decade, won the race for the first time since Dale Jarrett in 1993.

Gibbs had made it clear that he had no use for the victories his drivers collected in the exhibition races leading into Sunday’s season-opener – Hamlin and Busch each won one race in the buildup to the opener. But the threetime Super Bowl-winning coach was focused only on the 500 and his four drivers brainstormed on the best way to get a win.

“The thrill in football, you can’t get any more excited than that, winning a Super Bowl. It’s the same thrill over here,” Gibbs said. “Most people never get to have a dream in life. I’ve had two from an occupational standpoint. I’m probably one of the most blessed guys in the world.”

Hamlin, Kenseth, Busch and Carl Edwards stuck close together for most of the race, and they got assistance from Truex, who became a de facto JGR teammate this year when Furniture Row Racing moved to Toyota.

Kenseth led Truex until the final lap when Hamlin finally jumped out of line. Starting a second line on the outside, Hamlin got a push from Kevin Harvick that allowed him to catch

By DAILY CHRONICLE sports@daily-chronicle.com Freshman shooter Courtney Woods had a career day for Northern Illinois and junior guard Ally Lehman made school history, but the Huskies fell, 84-60, at Eastern Michigan on Saturday afternoon.

Woods scored a career-high 21 points on 7 for 10 shooting – including 5 for 8 from three – and had six assists in the loss. Lehman had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, giving her 18 games this season with at least 10 rebounds, breaking a Huskie record.

Junior post Cassidy Glenn also had a double-double, nothing 12 points and 11 rebounds.

However, the Huskies (10-15 overall, 3-11 in MAC West) were outscored 25-9 in the first quarter and only had three bench points in the game.

“We didn’t handle the press very well at all,” Northern Illinois coach Lisa Carlsen said. “We talked all week that any time we run into that kind of pressure that we couldn’t attack with soft passes and that’s where I think we got into trouble. I don’t think we were aggressive enough. Eastern Michigan got their hands on a lot of balls that created offense for them.”

The Huskies stay on the road, playing at Western Michigan at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Huskies drop pair in Day 2 of tournament: Northern Illinois man-

aged just a combined two runs in a pair of games in the second day of the Florida Atlantic University Tournament, falling 3-0 to UConn and 6-2 to host Florida Atlantic on Saturday in Boca Raton.

In Game 1, the Huskies (1-3 overall) managed three hits as a team – with Tara Thacker, Emily Naegele and Caitlyn Warren each recorded base hits. Thacker rebounded from a rough outing in the first day of the season, pitching six innings and allowing three runs on four hits.

In Game 2, Alaynie Woollard hit a two-run home run and Naegele went 2 for 3 in the loss to the Owls, who are a perfect 8-0.

Illinois lost its third straight to start the season, dropping a pair of games Saturday at Boston College – losing 5-0 and 2-1.

In Game 1, freshman pitcher William Anderson recorded a quality start, throwing six innings and allowing three runs on six hits while throwing 101 pitches.

Offensively, first baseman Tommy Hook (2 for 4) was the only Huskie with multiple hits in the game.

In Game 2, Justin Fletcher hit an RBI double in the top of the eighth inning to cut the Eagles lead to 2-1, but the Huskies couldn’t come up with another run.

Northern Illinois junior pitcher Aaron Rumfield pitched well in the loss, scattering six hits and two runs over six innings.

Lee stays strong for Huskies: JooYoung Lee shot an even 72 to stay one-under through two rounds Saturday at the All-American Classic at the Golf Club of Houston.

Lee, who had four birdies on the day, is tied for ninth place and the Huskies are in 14th as a team.

Moore, who was 10 for 14 from the field, tied his career high. Pau Gasol had 21 points, Mike Dunleavy and Bobby Portis each scored 17 and Doug McDermott added 16 as the Bulls won their second straight.

Bryant finished with 22 points on 8-for-20 shooting in 27 minutes. Julius Randle also had 22 points and Jordan Clarkson added 20 as Los Angeles dropped its fifth in a row.

The Bulls played a video tribute to Bryant during the introductions of the Lakers’ starters. Rose referred to Bryant Kobe Bryant as his generation’s Michael Jordan, and the salute ended with Gasol introducing his former teammate.

Bryant received a standing ovation and the crowd broke into a “Kobe! Kobe!” chant.

Early in the third quarter, Bryant hit back-to-back jumpers to tie the score at 66. Gasol then answered with a 3-pointer to spark a string of eight straight points for a 74-66 Bulls lead.

Pominville, Haula lead Wild past Hawks

By DAVE CAMPBELL The Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS – Jason Pominville and Erik Haula each had a goal and two assists, and the Minnesota Wild celebrated the first outdoor game in franchise history with a 6-1 victory on Sunday over the Blackhawks.

In front of a crowd of 50,426 at TCF Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus with an ideal faceoff temperature of 35 degrees, the Wild turned the NHL’s 17th edition of openair hockey into a romp past their postseason nemesis and primary rival.

The Blackhawks pulled goalie Corey Crawford for Scott Darling after 19 saves in two periods. Nino Niederreiter and Ryan Carter each added a goal and an assist, and Matt Dumba and

Thomas Vanek also scored.

Patrick Kane ended Devan Dubnyk’s shutout pursuit with his Western Conference-leading 35th goal midway through the third period. Dubnyk stopped 31 shots.

Ten players tallied at least one point for the Wild, including all three former Golden Gophers in Vanek, Haula and Mike Reilly, whose college careers took place across the street at Mariucci Arena.

The Wild improved to 4-0 under interim coach John Torchetti and 3-0 this season against the Blackhawks, the team that has eliminated them from the playoffs in each of the past three years. The Wild have scored a whopping 21 goals in those four games since the firing last week of head coach Mike Yeo.

Picky young eaters grow out of it Dr. K: My preschooler will eat only white foods. I’m worried he’s not getting the proper nutrients to grow and develop.

What can I do?

Dear Reader: I’m not a pediatrician, but when I trained in pediatrics in medical school, I was amazed by how many parents brought their kids to the doctor because the kids were picky eaters.

My pediatrician colleagues here at Harvard Medical School tell me many “white food fanciers” start off as adventurous eaters. Then around the age of 2 or 2½, they refuse anything with color.

Instead, they opt exclusively for white or beige foods, usually carbohydrates.

Favorites include plain noodles, chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, white bread and white cheese.

The good news is by the time most children reach the age of 10, they’re digging into a wide spectrum of foods.

While you’re waiting for your child to mature, you might be wringing your hands, worried your little one isn’t getting enough nutrients and fiber. But if your child is measuring within the growth chart and has energy to spare, there’s probably nothing to worry about.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t try to gently change your child’s eating behaviors: • Counteract your concern. Pressure and heavy-handed encouragement likely will backfire. If you can’t stop worrying, speak with your pediatrician. For example, if your child’s favorite foods don’t include all of the vitamins he or she needs, multivitamins in liquid or pill form may deliver what’s needed until your child eats a more balanced diet.

• Set an example. Show your child

• Make white or beige smoothies. Make a smoothie out of soy milk and then add some white fruits such as pears, yellow apples or white grapes.

• Be Sneaky. Combine cauliflower with mashed potatoes, and your little one won’t be the wiser. Try other ways to sneak vegetables in with beloved white foods.

• Opt for cream of wheat cereal. It’s white and has a child’s daily requirement for iron.

• Ask your child to help wiht simple food prep. By handling and touching different

nonwhite foods without pressure to eat them, your child may be more likely to taste them at mealtime.

• Be patient. A typical young child needs multiple exposures to a new food before he’ll risk tasting it – and 10 to 20 tastes before he actually likes it. So give it time.

have been in a relationship with my girlfriend, “Allison,” for two years, but lately there have been frequent rough patches. I’m 18 and a college student. I love Allison, but the relationship is taking a toll on us physically and emotionally.

We have had to deal with separation ever since we got together. She’s the only one with a car and a “real” job. I work on campus in a work-study program in exchange for reduced tuition. I try to help Allison as much as I can to reduce the stress on her.

She has asked me to transfer schools, but I’d like to stay where I am because I feel I will have the ability to make something of myself.
