Thoughts about a blustery Friday

YESTERDAY’S RESULTS

I don’t mind occasional adversity from Mother Nature.

It can make a day a little different, and I enjoy unusual days. They usually make for interesting newspapers.

A big snow event, where we get 8 inches, a foot or more, is good. The kind of snowstorm that makes you feel as if you’ve accomplished something just by making it possible to back out of your driveway.

After you work for an hour or more to make that possible, then you can celebrate that achievement by commiserating with the neighbors.

A big snow is one of the few winter events that brings people outside up and down the block.

We’ve been pretty short on snowstorms this winter. So on Friday, we had to settle for high winds.

Wind is not nearly so much fun. It’s not pretty. It’s not calming. But it did give me a sense of satisfaction to be sitting in a dark newsroom, illuminated only by emergency lights and the glow of a laptop screen and post a story to Daily-Chronicle.com about (what else) power outages.

Not exactly a Jack London story, but this is what passes for man vs. nature in this

Although we’d been writing all day about power outages, it still took me a minute to figure out why the garage door wouldn’t open when I got home. Turned out I had to take a long drive up north into Wisconsin (where they’re also short on snow cover), and in between fighting the gusting wind, we drove past at least five semitrailers that had been blown off the road, onto their side, landing with the steering wheel not far from the ground.

Unlike writing a story with the lights out, that really did seem scary. Luckily, we kept on going and managed to cut through the wind all the way into cheese country. Hope the high winds were nothing more than a minor inconvenience for all of you.

FAMILY, FRIENDS BID FAREWELL TO GENUINELY ‘NICE GUY’ FRANK O’BARSKI DeKALB – Family and friends will say a final goodbye Saturday to a County Board member remembered for his dedication to his office and for being a geniunely “nice guy.” Frank O’Barski, D-10th District, died Feb. 9 after recurring battles with cancer. His funeral will be held at 2 p.m. at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb. O’Barski was a longtime member and chairman of the board of trustees there.

“He never put on a facade for anyone,” said Suzanne Willis, O’Barski’s widow. “He was always just himself.”

SYCAMORE FALLS IN REGIONAL FINAL AURORA – Turnovers diminished any chance the Sycamore girls basketball team had of winning on Friday night against St. Francis, losing in the Class 3A Illinois Math and Science Academy Regional final 48-41. The Spartans came into the regional as the No. 1 seed but could not protect their possession of the ball for the majority of the game against No. 4 seed St. Francis (21-10).

Sycamore’s leading scorers were McGhee and Taiya Hopkins who both scored 12 points. Hunt finished with seven points.

Winds leave thousands without power in DeKalb County

DeKALB – Thousands were left without power, semitrailers rolled off the road and a trampoline bounced from yard to yard as 55 mph winds swept DeKalb County.

The outages led some closures. Early Friday afternoon, KishHealth System, part of Northwestern Medicine, closed its Cardiac Rehab at Kishwaukee Hospital for the remainder of the day. Sycamore High School also closed early as the outage dragged on.

The National Weather Service issued a high wind advisory Thursday that became a warning and remained in effect until 6 p.m. Friday, meteorolo-

gist Casey Sullivan said.

“We were expecting it,” he said.

“We issued a wind advisory [Thursday] and upgraded it [Friday.]”

The unseasonably warm weather and high winds went hand-in-hand, he added. Temperatures reached nearly 60 degrees Friday and will stay in the high 50s today, he said.

The wind advisory predicted wind from 30 to 40 mph, with occasional gusts going up to 60, according to the National Weather Service. The strongest gust to hit DeKalb clocked in at 55 mph, Sullivan said.

“We’re been running pretty much nonstop since it kicked up,” Mark Espy, DeKalb’s streets supervisor. “We’ve had everything from partial roofs that blew off and landed in the middle of the road to a small utility shed that blew into the road near Founders Elementary, when the kids were being [let out of school].

That was kind of a priority.”

Traffic signals also went out and the wind also blew the tops of some street lights in DeKalb, police Cmdr. Jason Leverton said.

The wind also toppled a semitrailer near the intersection of Fourth Street and Gurler Road.

Police officers had a busy day responding to calls while dealing with outages at the department.

Generators were used during the outages at the station, Leverton said.

“There was great teamwork not only within the department, but with the dispatchers, fire department and streets department,” he said.

Likewise, Sycamore police officers handled calls all day, but no major damage was reported. There were traffic light outages, downed power lines and blowing debris, Sycamore police Cmdr.

Steve Cook said.

Sycamore firefighters also helped free a person stuck in an elevator at a downtown law office.

Across ComEd’s system, more than 114,000 customers were without power Friday afternoon.

Power had already be restored to about 143,000 customers Friday afternoon, said Linsey Godbey, a spokeswoman for the utility. More than 400 ComEd workers and contractors were out in the field Friday assessing damages and

making repairs were it was safe to do so.

“Due to the nature of the wind storm, making sure customers and crews are safe is paramount,” she said.

She urged people to avoid downed lines and always assume wires were live. Outages and downed lines should be reported to ComEd immediately at 1-800-334-7661, she said.

Safety issues and the continuing wind gusts made it difficult to predict when power would be restored to all Illinois customers, Godbey said.

Loss of power caused issues for some local school districts. Sycamore School District 427 dismissed some high school students at 1:30 p.m., because the power was out — bus service remained on the same schedule and some kids had to stick it out in the dark until normal dismissal time.

“It was an interesting day,” Superintendent Kathy Countryman said. “All of our schools at one point or another

experienced a power outage. At the high school, once the power was out for about an hour and 15 minutes, we felt is was necessary to dismiss the students early.”

Most high-schoolers either walk or drive themselves to school, Countryman said.

At the elementary schools, students and staff handled the day well, she added.

“Students of a younger age did a great job, even with the lights flickering,” she said. “Staff was fabulous and they just did a little learning in the afternoon without technology.”

DeKalb School District 428 fared slightly better, Superintendent Doug Moeller said.

“Littlejohn, Tyler, Malta and Cortland [elementary schools] had sporadic interruptions,” Moeller said. “We didn’t get any damage and the buses ran fine and the light flickered but never went out.”

I know what you’re thinking. Because, I thought it myself. I figured I could just put off this whole retirement thing for another year or maybe two. Then it hit me. All the things I will need to do to prepare for the big decision and move – like sorting, packing and selling a home; I’ll still have to do. Only when that time comes, I’ll be another year or two older. Let’s face it, we’re not getting any younger. I looked at other places around Elburn but none of them felt like home. Then I came out to Oak Crest. I toured the grounds, visited with the staff, compared prices and amenities and just knew. Oak Crest was more than just a place to retire, it would be my home. The day I moved in I said, “I wouldn’t have wanted to wait even one more day.” I am so glad that I didn’t put off until tomorrow, what I could do today.

OBITUARIES RONALD LEROY ABBOTT Born: April 3, 1931 Died: Feb. 17, 2016

Ronald LeRoy Abbott, 84, of Elva, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2016, at DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center.

Born April 3, 1931, in DeKalb, the son of Elmer and Ella (Ingham) Abbott, Ron married Juanita Freeman on December 17, 1955, in Sycamore. Ron was very proud of living in his family homestead for 83 years.

While working alongside his father at Elva Electric, Ron was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. When he returned, he became the road commissioner of Afton Township before working at Redi Redi Mix and Johnson Concrete. He retired after working for 28 years in building maintenance for the Illinois Tollway. Ron was a member of DeKalb and Sycamore Moose and Teamsters Local 330.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Juanita; daughter, Deb (Bob) Hoffman of Sandwich; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Randy Lee Abbott in 1988; parents; and sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Wilbur Lawrence.

At Ron’s request, no services will be held.

Cremation is by Anderson Funeral Home Crematory. Interment of cremated remains will be at a later date at Afton Township Cemetery, DeKalb.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Gene; parents, Hugo and Mildred Wahlgren; her brothers, Don, Jack, and Bill.

A private service for the family will be held.

WORTHIE ELWOOD BRILES Born: Jan. 31, 1918 Died: Feb. 18, 2016

Worthie Elwood Briles, 98, of DeKalb, Illinois, passed away Thursday, February 18, 2016, under the tender care of the DeKalb County Hospice at the Oak Crest Retirement Center, DeKalb.

The family wishes to thank both organizations for the professional and extremely kind care that they provided Elwood.

LINDA ANDERSEN Born January 31, 1918, in ItBorn: March 24, 1939 aly, Ellis County, Texas, Elwood was the son Died: Feb. 16, 2016 of Worthie Harwood Briles and Leona Hays (Connally) Briles. He married Clara Ruth Linda L Andersen, 76, passed away Wilson on June 6, 1941, in Austin, Texas, peacefully at her home in Arlington, Texas. while the two of them were attending the Tuesday, February 16, 2016.

University of Texas. Later that summer, ElShe was born on March 24, 1939, grew up wood and Ruth received their B.A. degrees in Hinckley and married Eugene Andersen in zoology from UT. They then went to the University of Wisconsin at Madison to begin on November 16th, 1962.

could serve in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II from September 1942 through December 1946. He was assigned to the 110th Army Air Force Base Unit and received training at Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts, where his and Ruth’s first child, Susan Marie, was born. He then was assigned to the serology laboratory at Mitchell Field, Long Island, New York. While he was there, their son, David Elwood, was born.

After World War II, Elwood and Ruth returned to Madison where they received their advanced degrees in immunogenetics in 1948 (Elwood: Ph.D., Ruth: M.S.). The family then moved to College Station, Texas, in 1948, where Elwood was a faculty member in the Poultry Science Department at Texas A&M and where their youngest daughter, Sara Jean, was born. While Elwood was at A&M, he was an Assistant Professor from 1948 through 1951 and an Associate Professor from 1951 through 1957.

In 1957, the family moved to DeKalb, Illinois, where Elwood was Head of Immunogenetics Chicken Research for the DeKalb Agricultural Association from 1958 through 1970, with Ruth working with him as a Research Associate. From 1970 through 1987, Elwood was Professor of Biological Sciences at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. After 1987, when he officially retired, Elwood continued to head the Avian Immunogenetics Laboratory as an Adjunct Professor at NIU until he moved to Oak Crest in 2012 following Ruth’s death in 2011. From 1970 through 2001, Ruth had worked with Elwood at NIU, again as a Research Associate. On October 9, 2004, Elwood and Ruth were jointly recognized for their significant contributions to avian genetics by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

During her career, Elwood authored or coauthored over 207 publications, those coauthors sometimes including his wife Ruth and/or his brother Dr. Connally Oran Briles. Of those 207 publications, 7 were book chapters, 114 were journal articles, and 86 were abstracts in scientific journals

or in the proceedings of scientific meetings.

Elwood was active in a number of professional organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science (Elected Fellow), the American Association of Immunologists (Elected), Poultry Science Association (Elected), and Sigma Xi (Elected). He was also the recipient of a number of awards, including election to the Poultry Science Hall of Fame in 2001. On October 11, 2013, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences of Northern Illinois University presented Elwood with one of four 2013 Distinguished Faculty Awards.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his siblings, Connally Oran Briles, Bonnie Bell (Briles) Stokes, Van Gordon Briles, and Jack David Briles.

DeKALB – Family and friends will say a final goodbye Saturday to a County Board member remembered for his dedication to his office and for being a geniunely “nice guy.”

Frank O’Barski, D-10th District, died Feb. 9 after recurring battles with cancer. His funeral will be held at 2 p.m. at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb. O’Barski was a longtime member and chairman of the board of trustees there.

“He was such a caring individual. He cared about people. He was so dedicated to public service that he came to meetings right after he would get chemo treatments. He’d have his stocking cap on, he’d have his mittens on, because he’d be freezing because of that treatment. But he would make sure that he was here. That amount of dedication is inspiring. I’m really going to miss my friend.”

The chairman said that O’Barski will be memorialized with a bench dedicated to him once the county

opens the new Sycamore Forest Preserve site in the coming months.

Willis called the honor befitting of her husband. She said the bench would be a place where people could go to remember him, a man she said was also a nature enthusiast. She said he would often plant trees.

With the seat now officially vacant, Pietrowski said the Democratic Party will put together a list of potential candidates to appoint. They will be interviewed and someone will be selected to fill the post until

She worked many clerical jobs over the years, both in DeKalb and Rockford, but the job she felt most passionate about was her role as a wife, mother, Nana, and Great Nana. She enjoyed baking cookies, feeding and caring for birds, playing piano, spending time at her family cabin in Eagle River, Wisconsin, and playing Bunco with her Bunco Girls for over 45 years. Annette was an avid reader and adoring sports fan, whether it was her grandchildren or professional sports. She

was a loyal member of Spring Creek United Church of Christ, and former, proud member of their choir. She was a devoted wife to Laverne, loving mother to her children and grandchildren. Annette was a woman who lived selflessly, compassionately, and will be missed dearly.

She is survived by her children, Cheryl (Kevin) McCauley of DeKalb and Paul (Jan) Levi of Belvidere; her grandchildren, Lindsey (Ryan) Thompson, Kristen (Colin Fannon) Levi, Michael, Matthew and Ben Levi; her greatgrandchildren, Wesley, Henry, and Charley; her brother, Jack (Karen) Myers; sister in-law Carol (Dennis) Botnen; brothers in-law, Larry (Melody) Levi and Donald

Scott; numerous nieces and nephews, and many special friends and neighbors.

Predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Laverne Levi; her son, Michael A. Levi; her sister, Ruthie Scott; and her parents.

Funeral Service will be Saturday, February 20, 2016, at noon at Spring Creek United Church of Christ, 4500 Spring Creek Road, Rockford, with Pastor Ivan Schoen officiating. A visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until time of service at the church. Interment Arlington Memorial Park.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS BELVIDERE – A northern Illinois man whose family was recovering after last year’s Fairdale tornado destroyed their home has died in a forklift accident.

The Winnebago County coroner said 36-year-old Chris Thick died Tuesday when a forklift slid backward off a truck and struck him.

He was a forklift mechanic

for Fitzgerald Equipment Co. in Rockford.

Officials said the accident happened at Fastenal, a Belvidere manufacturer.

Thick and fiancee Jackie Jordan were rebuilding their lives in Belvidere after the Fairdale tornado destroyed their home.

They have two sons who are ages 2 and 3 this year, and Thick had an 18-year-old son.

Jordan said Thick’s death

was a shock.

She said he was a “wonderful” man, good father and “would do anything for anyone.”

A moment of silence was held for Thick at a meeting of the DeKalb County Long-Term Recovery Corp.

Genoa to offer new electronic, hazardous material recycling program

The program means Genoa residents can recycle electronics such as TVs and hazardous materials including paint, oil and chemicals. Under the original contract, electronics could only be recycled once a month at the city’s Municipal Building, which has stopped accepting tube TVs.

The city will also partner with Waste Management from April 1 through Nov. 30 for a pilot organics collection program for an additional monthly fee, according to the news release.

The electronic and hazardous material recycling program is expected to begin May 1.

Then, Pietrowski said, the appointee would have to run to be elected to the seat.

County Board member Paul Stoddard, D-9th District, is also chairman

of the local Democratic Party. He said the party has already been approached by one individual interested in the seat.

He said the party plans to invite

others to apply.

Stoddard said the party is looking for “someone who is committed to the community and will do their part to help out.”

GENOA – Unwanted electronics can now be recycled with just one phone call to Waste Management.

The city has extended its contract with Waste Management, and will provide door-to-door electronic and

hazardous material recycling.

Genoa’s current contract with the company was to expire April 30, but has been extended for at least one more year, according to a news release. The city can now participate in an “At Your Doorstep Program” without a fee increase for the first year after the extension of the current

D-427 to host public hearing on budget reduction plan

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The Sycamore School District 427 Board will host a public hearing at its meeting Tuesday, opening the floor for public comment about the 56 proposed layoffs districtwide.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at Sycamore Middle School, where the board will vote whether to move forward with the cutbacks, Superintendent Kathy Countryman said.

District officials presented the board with a $2.5 million budget reduction plan in January. Board members, however, said balancing their deficit would require even more cutbacks.

This is the second year of the board-approved, three-year, $3.8 mil-

lion budget reduction plan. District 427 began the school year facing a $2.3 million deficit.

Countryman presented the proposed layoffs at the board’s Feb. 9 meeting.

The cuts could mean letting go of more than 14 teachers, including physical education, music, art and technology staff.

The proposal also includes eliminating nine lunchroom supervisor positions, five full-time-equivalent and two part-time clerical or support positions, and one security staff member, and reworking the schools’ bus routes.

If the reductions are approved, no layoffs will be made until March 8 for the district’s certified staff, and April 12 for the district’s classified staff.

“In my mind, I knew I was doing the right thing,” he said.

His plan had two parts. First, he, family members, including his mother, Jennifer Fite, and grandparents, and David Fite a group of volunteers and students at Chicago’s Nettelhorst School would decorate around the school for the nearby Gay Pride Parade in June. Then he and his mom would host a meal and dance party and distribute backpacks, transit cards and other gifts for young people who gather regularly for support and socializing at the Center on Halsted, which serves Chicago’s lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual residents. Some are homeless or “couch surfing” with friends because their families have kicked them out.

CHICAGO – David Fite had already earned the 21 Boy Scout merit badges needed to earn the coveted rank of Eagle. But he still had to complete a community service project.

Now 16, he’d always been a gung-ho scout, dutiful, polite and committed.

But he’d also been disappointed with the organization’s longstanding ban on openly gay scouts and leaders, so much so that he’d considered quitting.

“I knew it wasn’t right,” said Fite, who has many family friends who are gay or lesbian – some of them honorary “aunts” and “uncles” who’ve given him money for camp and other scouting projects over the years.

Instead of leaving his beloved Troop 115, the usually quiet teen decided to make some noise, writing letters and speaking out with other scouts and adults who also opposed the bans. And he knew his Eagle project was his best chance to make a statement. Although the Boy Scouts lifted the ban on openly gay scouts in 2013, the ban on gay leaders remained

Catholic group asks patrons to help get state budget passed

CHICAGO – With Illinois’ debt to its largest social services agency now topping $25 million because of the ongoing budget impasse, Chicago’s Catholic Charities is asking priests and parishioners to lobby politicians in Springfield.

The Chicago Tribune reported that a budget stalemate over how to solve a $6.6 billion deficit has led to billions of dollars in unpaid bills, including services Catholic Charities provides to Cook and Lake counties, such as in-home care, early childhood education, feeding the homeless and substance abuse treatment.

While Duckworth largely

ignored Zopp’s approach, she did take a jab about Zopp’s time serving on the Chicago Board of Education. The board approved contracts later linked to scandal. Former Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett pleaded guilty in October for her role in a scheme to steer $23 million in no-bid contracts to a suburban education firm, SUPES Academy, in exchange for bribes and kickbacks.

“I can’t speak to why Ms. Zopp rubber stamped the SUPES contact,” Duckworth said.

Zopp, a former board member appointed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, has said Byrd-Bennett was a reputable educator when hired and there weren’t early indicators she was involved in wrongdoing.

Duckworth, instead, blasted Kirk on international poli-

cy, among other issues.

“Mark Kirk has been wrong on every issue of national security that he has been involved in,” Duckworth said.

The debate also got emotional at one point with Duckworth’s voice breaking during a question on homeless veterans. The former Army pilot whose helicopter was shot down in Iraq has held veterans affairs positions in Illinois and the Obama administration.

Duckworth confirmed to reporters afterward that she would not be participating in any further debates. All of the joint candidate appearances have been in Chicago, something Zopp said wasn’t fair to downstate voters.

Duckworth dismissed Zopp’s criticism.

Rauner vetoes MAP grant, community college funding plan

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed a proposal Friday to fund community college and tuition grants that help students pay for college because he said the state doesn’t have the money.

Democrats approved a plan in January that would have provided $324 million to community colleges and $397 million to the Monetary Award Program.

Rauner said the plan “would explode the state’s budget deficit, exacerbate the state’s cash flow crisis, and place further strain on social service providers and recipients who are already suffering from the state’s deficit spending.”

GOP lawmakers have said the proposal is an empty promise because Illinois doesn’t have a budget. State colleges and universities have not had appropriations since July 1.

Bouncer gets 1 year in East St. Louis strip club killing

BELLEVILLE– A former East St. Louis strip club bouncer who pleaded guilty to mob action after killing a customer with his pickup truck has been sentenced to one Reginald Allen year in prison.

Reginald Allen of Dupo on Friday faced a sentencing range of probation to six years in prison in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

He was initially charged with reckless homicide in the 2009 death of Anthony Rice during a parking lot dispute outside a club that Allen’s family owned.

Authorities said Allen, who is white, taunted Rice, a 23-yearold black man, with racial comments and threw a brick through a friend’s car window.

Allen said he feared for his life after the friend grabbed a gun from his car and fired several warning shots once Allen had thrown the brick.

Deere’s 1Q results top estimates, but cuts full-year outlook

MOLINE – Deere’s fiscal first-quarter performance beat Wall Street’s expectations, even as the company continues to deal with weak sales of farm and construction equipment. The agricultural equipment maker lowered its full-year forecast.

Deere has been contending with slumping agricultural machinery sales for some time.

Falling commodity prices have made farmers less likely to buy new equipment. Declining oil prices also have affected its construction equipment sales.

In November, the company said it was laying off about 220 workers. But Deere has been effectively managing its costs.

In the first quarter, total costs and expenses declined to $5.17 billion from $5.82 billion.

For the period ended Jan. 31, Deere & Co. earned $254.4 million, or 80 cents per share. That compares with $386.8 million, or $1.12 per share, a year earlier.

This beat the 71 cents per share that analysts surveyed by

Judge to company: Repay employee profit-sharing plan

CHICAGO – A federal judge in Chicago has ordered an Illinois company to repay more than $1.7 million raided from its employee profit-sharing plan.

The judgment requires Palos Hills-based Alliance Home Healthcare and two top officers to repay money that was improperly used. Alliance set up the plan in 2000 to provide retirement benefits to eligible employees. The ruling issued Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve follows an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration.

The court appointed an independent company to distribute the plan’s assets to participants and beneficiaries and to end the plan.

CHICAGO – The debate over whether Canadian-born Ted Cruz is eligible to be president is moving from the campaign trail to the courtroom.

Lawsuits challenging the Texas Republican’s eligibility for the ballot have been filed in recent weeks by residents in states including Illinois, New York and Alabama who argue he can’t be president because he’s not a natural-born citizen. Fellow GOP candidate Donald Trump also has threatened to sue over the issue.

Cruz and some legal experts say he’s eligible because his mother was a U.S. citizen when he was born.

Lawrence Joyce, a pharmacist and lawyer from Poplar Grove, Illinois, said Friday he filed suit in Chicago because he wants to avoid what he called a potential “nightmare scenario.”

He said he fears if Cruz becomes the GOP nominee, Democrats will get him kicked off the ballot in some states or Cruz will be forced to drop out, and establishment Republicans will replace him with a more moderate candidate, such as Jeb Bush or Chris Christie.

Joyce said he’s backing Ben Carson but is acting “strictly on my own.”

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration told a U.S. magistrate judge Friday it would be willing to allow Apple Inc. to retain possession of and later destroy specialized software it has been ordered to design to help the FBI hack into an encrypted iPhone used by the gunman in December’s mass shootings in California.

The government made clear that it was open to less intrusive options in a new legal filing intended to blunt public criticism by Apple’s chief executive, Tim Cook, who said the software would be “too dangerous to create” because it would threaten the digital privacy of millions of iPhone customers worldwide.

“Apple may maintain custody of the software, destroy it after its purpose under the order has been served, refuse to disseminate it outside of Apple and make clear to the world that it does not apply to other devices or users without lawful court orders,” the Justice Department told Judge Sheri Pym. “No one outside Apple would have access to the software required by the order unless Apple itself chose to share it.”

It says that the software the government seeks, contrary to Apple’s assertions, is not akin to a “master key, capable of opening hundreds of millions of locks.” And it also rejects the idea that the court order placed an unreasonable burden on the company, saying Apple already has the technical wherewithal to satisfy it.

“To the extent that Apple claims that the order is unreasonably burdensome because it undermines Apple’s marketing strategies or because it fears criticism for providing lawful access to the government, these concerns do not establish an undue burden,” the government wrote.

Apple’s written objection, already signaled by Cook in a message to Apple customers, is due Friday.

We’re pleased to see local students branching out into advanced tech and engineering, and that they’re receiving help from a local employer and others.

Thumbs-up: To the progress made in rebuilding Fairdale. This week, Les Bellah, Kirkland’s village president, thanked Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce members for their help, adding that more than $2 million worth of donations had been made to the recovery effort. Earlier in the week, Fairdale residents learned that their community park would be open again before April 9. However, there remains considerable work to do in the area, including in clearing a few prominent debris piles and continued rebuilding.

Thumbs-down: To continued uncertainty for higher education. Gov. Bruce Rauner talked a lot about education funding during his budget address Wednesday, but didn’t say a word about funding for higher education, which includes community colleges and universities around the state.

Today most people are expected to extend their learning well beyond high school, and yet our state in this budget year has shown no commitment to its institutions of higher learning, including Northern Illinois University and Kishwaukee College. They have received none of the state aid they had relied on in previous years, and even if they do receive funding, it seems likely there will be considerable reductions from previous years.

Thumbs-down: To the loss of Harper Lee. She was reclusive, and until recently, had published only one novel, the 1960 classic “To Kill a Mockingbird,” a story about racial injustice in the South, which became required reading for generations of schoolchildren. When the Library of Congress did a survey in 1991 on books that have affected people’s lives, “To Kill a Mockingbird” was second only to the Bible. Lee recently allowed a second novel, “Go Set a Watchman,” to be released.

To the Editor: I am writing this letter in support of Clay Campbell to fill the position of the DeKalb County States Attorney’s Office in the upcoming election.

Campbell’s honesty, compassion and hopeful insight into our community’s problems and needs, and his willingness to examine issues and listen closely to our questions and concerns, sets him far apart from the other candidates in this race.

Clay is competent and fair, making him exceptionally qualified for this position. He is tough on crime and takes pride in locking up violent offenders, sexual predators and narcotics traffickers.

Campbell believes in the rights of the victim, but never forgets the rights of the accused. Clay Campbell is an even-tempered

individual who has a passion for justice. While in office previously as state’s attorney, Clay took the lead on many difficult and high profile cases dedicated to working with the victims of horrific crimes. Clay has the reputation for being a tough prosecutor but also a champion for victim’s rights.

I believe Clay Campbell possesses the qualities and experience to be an excellent state’s attorney.

Rauner wants government that serves business

To the Editor: Suggestions by the chattering class that Illinois legislative leaders should be willing to compromise

with Rauner to break the current stalemate in Springfield amounts to urging the residents of the state to ingest a lesser amount of poison instead of the full dose being prescribed by the governor.

Rauner’s vision of government – of, by, and for corporations – would no doubt serve the governor and his wealthy friends very well.

It is another step in the ongoing effort to provide more comfort for the comfortable.

Meanwhile, too many of our state’s residents struggle mightily just to survive. Without the right to collectively bargain, working men and women are at the mercy of employers whether they be public or private.

That seems to be exactly the way Rauner wants it.

As for “crashing,” he points out that computer buyers aren’t willing to spend extra money for a backup system, but drivers definitely will.

Robot cars may soon save 30,000 lives a year, if bureaucrats let them. It will be a battle. The technology is way ahead of our laws.

Soon after my car was driving itself, I got bored. So I picked up a newspaper.

“Not a good idea, John!” scolded my Tesla copilot. He reminded me that state laws say a human driver must always be “in control.”

It would also be against the law if I had gone to sleep. But someday, that will be an option. Commuting will be much less stressful.

Because robot cars are safer, insurance rates will drop. Some people will still want to drive themselves, and those people will pay a little more.

That’s fine, but then our authoritarian government will probably switch gears and ban “dangerous human driving.”

Maybe that will be the libertarian controversy in 2021.

Freedom doesn’t mean doing anything you want. It means, in part, deciding when to give up control and when to retain it. It also means doing nothing that directly harms others.

Giving up some control to machines has been a benefit for centuries.

Robot cars will take away jobs from some taxi drivers, truck drivers, delivery men, etc. Unions, The New York Times and maybe Donald Trump will demand laws to “protect” those jobs.

But that’s a mistake.

“Experts” always said automation will create unemployment. In 1930, a New York Times headline said: “Economists predict number of men employed will decline.” But the opposite has happened. Forty-six million Americans had jobs when that headline ran; now 150 million do.

Technology did destroy some jobs.

Ninety percent of Americans once worked on farms. Now only 2 percent do. Somehow, today those 2 percent grow more food for less money. A hundred million Americans found other jobs.

This is a great thing.

Farm work was grueling, dangerous and time-consuming. Better agricultural technology frees people up to do safer, more interesting jobs. It also allows people more leisure. Think how many things we’re free to do now that we grow food with the help of tractors.

Maybe someday we will look at driving cars the way we now look at farming with a mule.

Kishwaukee College ready for future, despite challenges My first month as the President of Kishwaukee College has been an enlightening and rewarding experience.

I’d like to share some things I have learned about the College community in my first few weeks.

• Kishwaukee College touches the lives of many area residents.

Close to 6,500 students have enrolled in over 60 different programs during the 2015-16 school year. The faculty are second to none. They are dedicated to providing the best academic experience for our students and do so in a setting of small class sizes that allows them to really get to know their students.

The number of alumni who credit a Kishwaukee faculty member for providing support and guidance in choosing a career path and their eventual success on that path is, quite simply, inspiring. In addition, Kish has outstanding staff who come to work every day to help make the college a great place to learn.

• Kishwaukee College has a tremendous impact on the young adults in our communities. Almost a third of the Class of 2015 from our district high schools made Kishwaukee College their first choice.

In another year, history tells us that

An impressive 95 percent of Kishwaukee graduates continue to live, work, and pay taxes in Illinois in the long term. Of Kishwaukee students who transfer to a university, 70 percent choose Northern Illinois University. We are pleased to see so many students stay local to continue their education.

I look forward to working with our business partners to ensure the college continues to meet the needs of our local workforce.

• Kishwaukee College provides affordable access to higher education.

According to debt.org, student loan debt in the U.S. grew from $260 billion in 2004 to a staggering $1.2 trillion in 2014. The average university graduate can expect to complete their degree with $26,600 in student loan debt (collegescholarships.org). For the 2015-16 academic year, tuition at a four-year public university in Illinois ranged from $11,000 to $20,000 according to collegeillinois.org.

The tuition for the year as a fulltime student at Kishwaukee is approximately $3,570, a considerable savings.

Federal financial aid was awarded to 53 percent of our students this year, but an impressive 80 percent of our students receive financial assistance – primarily in the form of grants and scholarships – to attend our college.

Much of this is due to the generous donations from the residents of the communities we serve.

The Kishwaukee College Foundation awarded more than $267,000 in scholarships to our students in 2015-16.

• Kishwaukee College, while faced with budget challenges, is preparing for the future. Although the current budget situation in Springfield is proving a challenge to higher education

institutions across the state, Kishwaukee College has taken steps to face this challenge.

The college relies on state funding for 22 percent of its total budget, and we have not received any of the funds to date. Furthermore, the future of the funding is uncertain. Faced with this situation, we have developed a plan, remaining focused on the student experience, both in and out of the classroom.

Most of our community residents are aware that we are planning for layoffs effective July 1 to meet the budget impasse and resulting funding shortfall. The plan has no academic programs being eliminated. No support services for students are being completely eliminated. The college has provided the educational opportunities that you, our community, need and want and we will continue to do so in the future.

I am proud to be leading Kishwaukee College, and thank you for welcoming me into the community. I am confident that we will continue to build on a strong tradition of educational integrity and excellence.

The Tesla S is the closest thing to a totally driverless car available now.

I had to leave my state to test-drive it.

New York’s archaic laws forbid taking both hands off the wheel.

Once outside New York, the Tesla representative in the passenger seat had me turn on the autopilot.

Suddenly, I was doing nothing. The car drove itself.

Actually, I didn’t do nothing. I hyperventilated.

It’s not natural to sit passively while “driving” at 65 mph.

Then came my accident. In a narrow tunnel, the car drifted left, and a tire banged against the side of the tunnel.

If I hadn’t quickly grabbed the steering wheel, we would have crashed.

Was the computer-guided car unable to handle a narrow tunnel? No, it turned out the mistake, as usual, was human error – my error. I had nervously touched the steering wheel when we entered the tunnel, and that disengaged the autopilot. The Tesla guy didn’t warn me. Or maybe he did, but I forgot.

Once I learned how the car works, I found the driverless car pretty wonderful, although weird. It’s counterintuitive to trust a computer to handle a

being fouled on a 3-point attempt – cutting St. Francis’ lead to 26-25.

Madison McGhee also made both attempts from the free-throw line, this time tying the game at 35 with 4:30 to play.

Sycamore’s leading scorers were McGhee and Taiya Hopkins who both scored 12 points. Hunt finished with seven points.

St. Francis held the lead almost the entire game with the help of their shooters being consistent with their jump shots and swarming Sycamore on defense. St. Francis took open shots whenever they had them and it was too much for Sycamore to come back from in the end.

St. Francis’ Antwainette Walker finished with 12 points to lead her team. Her effort on both ends of the

floor challenged Sycamore.

“To be honest with you, (Walker) took us out of a lot of things we normally do very well.” Goff said. “She really disrupted the game on defense and on offense she just took over in the first half.”

After the upset victory, St. Francis coach Melissa Taylor was overjoyed with how her team played against Sycamore.

“We had an outstanding performance from everyone who played tonight.” Taylor said. “Our bench was our motivator and our energizer tonight and that’s what gets it done for us. We constantly talk about an all-around effort from our team and they showed that tonight. I’m just so proud of this team I don’t know what to say.”

Kaneland falls to Rockets in regional final

sports@daily-chronicle.com BURLINGTON – Kaneland knew what it had to do.

A fast start on both ends of the floor, but do what it could to try and take the Burlington Central crowd out of Friday’s IHSA Class 3A Burlington Central Regional championship. The Rockets stole every part of those ideas.

Burlington Central jumped all over Kaneland with pressure defense from the opening tip off, to defeat the Knights, 49-30, to end Kaneland’s season.

“I tip my hat to (Burlington Central),” coach Ernie Colombe said.

“They locked us up really well defensively. Believe it or not, I was very pleased with the way we defended them for the most part. They just really took it to us defensively, and I told the girls that it wasn’t a lack of effort or anything like that, but sometimes you just run into a really good team and have to tip your hat.”

Kaneland (23-5) trailed by nine after one quarter and that Burlington Central (25-4) defensive pressure carried over into quarter No. 2.

The Rockets limited Kaneland (235) to just one, yes one, point the entire quarter. A free throw by Vanessa Gould at the 3:53 mark was the only ball the Knights saw go through the basket, which translated into a 29-9 halftime deficit.

Kaneland had a difficult time

offensively for most of the night, but the frustration culminated in that second quarter when the lead grew to an eventual insurmountable amount.

Burlington Central point guard Kayla Ross ignited the stellar defensive effort that forced 19 Kaneland turnovers, 13 of which came in the first half. Ross’s job? Do what she could to contain Knights’ senior point guard Camri Conley.

Conley scored all five of her points in the fourth quarter, once the game was well out of reach.

“They just played such good pressure defense,” Conley said. “Anything that they are normally really good at, whether it was help side, double-teaming, pressuring the ball or rebounding, everything was just such good, straight-up defense. It made it very difficult for us tonight.”

Colombe said his team’s primary focus coming into the ballgame was to limit the 3-point shooting of the Rockets. Burlington Central made 11 3-pointers in its semifinal win over Rochelle, and the Knights held them to just three, on seven attempts Friday night.

“It’s pick your poison with them,” Colombe said. “We did a great job of limiting them there, but they found other ways to beat us and it really all started with their defense.”

Kylie Modaff (two 3-pointers) and Bailey Crimmins led Kaneland with six points apiece in the loss.

AURORA – Turnovers diminished any chance the Sycamore girls basketball team had of winning Friday night against St. Francis, losing in the Class 3A Illinois Math and Science Academy Regional final, 48-41.

The Spartans came into the regional as the No. 1 seed but could not protect their possession of the ball for the majority of the game against No. 4 seed St. Francis (21-10).

St. Francis started the game in a press defense that had an obvious effect on the way Sycamore (21-7) operated on offense. St. Francis continued to press Sycamore throughout the game that caused them to force passes that weren’t there and put up shots

without getting quality looks.

“Turnovers killed us tonight.”

Sycamore coach Brett Goff said.

“We wanted to keep ourselves under 12 turnovers and we did that in our last game, but you can’t give a good team like St. Francis so opportunities like we did. The girls were really trying out there and gave their best effort and that’s all I can ask for out of them.”

Despite turning the ball over more than they wanted to, Sycamore did show bright spots in the later stages of the game that kept them in contention for the regional championship.

Those moments of success included playing aggressive offense to draw fouls from St. Francis. With 2 minutes left in the third quarter, Valerie Hunt made all of her free throws after

Rasmussen, Lohse step in for relay team

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – After Dylan Powers graduated at the conclusion of last season, a butterfly-sized hole was created on the DeKalb-Sycamore co-op boys swimming team’s 200-yard medley relay after its fifth-place finish at the IHSA State Championships in 2015.

Coach Melanie Chambers said she wasn’t sure who would step up to take that spot. Now with the IHSA St. Charles Sectional Meet set to begin today, the relay team is as strong as last year, and a big part of that has been Dylan Rasmussen stepping in for Powers.

“He filled in for Dylan Powers in the

butterfly spot on the relay, and he’s really stepped up his game with his training,” Chambers said. “He’s really filled into someone’s shoes when we didn’t know if we were going to have someone to do that.”

The co-op will be looking to hit the qualifying times necessary for a state trip.

The relay last year took fifth at state with a lineup of Daniel Hein, Jacob Bjork, Powers and Michael Carlson.

Powers and Carlson graduated, with sophomore Riley Lohse taking Carlson’s freestyle spot.

It’s been an adjustment for Rasmussen, a junior who wasn’t on the sectional team last season.

“It’s kind of nerve-wracking to be

honest, but exciting at the same timing – knowing we can go in there and make things happen even though it wasn’t looking so good to start out,” Rasmussen said.

Lohse’s goal is not only helping the relay team make the state meet, but is hoping for individual berths in 100 backstroke and the 100 freestyle.

Smaller hearing aids better Dear Dr. K: My hearing is going. Before I get a hearing aid, I’m told I need a hearing test. How will the test help?

Dear Reader: The hearing test (formally called an “audiological evaluation”) identifies how bad your hearing loss is in each ear. It also determines where the problem is worst. Is it with high-pitched sounds? Is it in distinguishing a particular sound – like someone speaking to you – in a noisy place? This is what the audiologist (a health professional specializing in hearing testing and hearing aids) needs to know in order to tell if you could benefit from a hearing aid and, if so, which style and type would help the most.

Before describing a hearing test, I need to first explain how the ears and the brain hear. When a sound wave enters your ear, it hits the eardrum.

Several tiny bones transmit sound waves from the eardrum through fluid into the inner ear. There lies a snail-shaped organ called the cochlea that is covered with tiny hairs. These hairs generate electrical signals that travel along the hearing nerve (the auditory nerve) to the brain. (I’ve put an illustration of how we hear on my website, askdoctork.com.)

The evaluation is done in a specially constructed booth that shuts out all unwanted noise. It tests the different parts of the ear that are necessary for hearing: • Pure-Tone Test . Each of your ears is tested separately by sounds of different frequencies and decibel levels. Frequency is the pitch of a sound. A highpitched sound is like a violin playing a high note. A low-pitched note is like the lowest keys on a piano. A decibel is the measurement of the loudness of a sound.

• Bone-Conduction Test . This test helps establish whether your hearing loss is primarily sensorineural (caused by damage to the cochlea, hair cells or auditory nerve) or conductive (caused by a blockage of sound transmission through your outer or middle ear), or a combination of the two.

• Speech Reception Threshold Test .

You will hear words, instead of tones, through your earphones. The words start out loud and gradually get softer. The test identifies the decibel level at which you can understand and repeat only half of the words.

• Speech Discrimination Test . This test assesses how well you understand words.

A high score on this test means your problem in understanding a spoken word comes from not hearing the word loudly enough. A hearing aid can correct that problem.

Today’s technology for testing hearing has improved greatly since I was in medical school. Even greater advances have been made in hearing aids. They not only work better, but they’ve also become tiny – people often don’t notice you have one.

For many of my patients, hearing tests followed by the right hearing aid have greatly improved the quality of their lives.

George Bernard Shaw said, “If you cannot get rid of the family skeleton, you may as well make it dance.”

Yesterday, I compared the two styles of bridge defense -- active and passive -- with dance. If you round up a posse and hunt for tricks, it is like dancing a fandango. But if you sit at home watching the television and waiting for declarer to knock on your front door and donate you tricks, that is akin to dancing a fox trot.

How do the defenders decide which steps to take?

First, they listen to the bidding. If it sounds like the opponents are full value for their calls, be active; if they crawl to their contract, stay passive.

Then, study the dummy. If it is balanced, the defenders can probably be cautious. But if it is unbalanced, especially with a good side suit, they should immediately chase tricks.

Which applies in this deal? South is in four hearts. West leads a low diamond. What should East do?

After North learned of the 4-4 heart fit, he wondered if his side might have a slam. Partner could have had something like S: A Q x, H: K Q J x, D: A x x x, C: A x, when seven hearts is excellent.

After East takes the first trick with his diamond ace, he should see that dummy’s spade suit is likely to be worth four or five tricks, and declarer may gain a diamond ruff or two. East must get active, shifting to the club 10.

As I have fixed the cards, this works perfectly.
