See what develops with Shodeen plan POLL YESTERDAY’S Can you picture a five-story apartment complex along Lincoln Highway just west of downtown DeKalb?

I can’t exactly see it. But that doesn’t mean it could never work.

Shodeen seems to think their plan to bring hundreds of hotel rooms and apartments to their property along Lincoln Highway can succeed, although they probably want the city to pitch in to help make that a reality. They’re talking about making a lot of space for people, both those who come from out of town and those who are looking to make their home here, at least for a little while.

To have a thriving downtown, it helps to have people who live in the area and can walk to restaurants, shops and theaters. Adding hundreds of people to the area would enhance demand for nearby services.

But boy, that would be a tall apartment building, and a lot of people would be bringing their cars downtown. Could the area handle the added traffic? Will there be enough parking?

Those are fair questions.

Still, as we saw this week, change can take some getting used to. Chances are you’re still getting accustomed to the Daily Chronicle’s new look.

That’s OK. So am I. Adding a couple of multistory build-

ings to the Shodeen property would probably take some getting used to as well, and some people will oppose the plan because they don’t want things to change.

That area has been mostly empty for so long, seeing something go in there would be welcome. It has to be the right something, however, and it has to be something that will sell, not just something other people want.

The DeKalb City Council will have to decide if this project fits in that space, what they’re willing to contribute, and whether in this case, Shodeen can deliver on its promises.

Bringing more people to the area and adding a hotel option could be helpful for DeKalb and Northern Illinois University, too, so long as doing so doesn’t jam up the area’s most important east-west highway.

It should be interesting to see what develops.

Butler hurt as Bulls lose in Denver

DENVER – Bulls guard Jimmy Butler was wheeled off the court late in the second quarter of Friday night’s 115-110 loss to the Nuggets in Denver after apparently aggravating a left knee injury.

Butler was fouled near the basket by the Nuggets’ Joffrey Lauvergne and fell awkwardly to the floor with 1:06 remaining in the second quarter. He was examined by medical personnel before getting to his feet and gingerly making his way to the foul line, where he made one of the two free throws.

He was then helped to a rolling chair and wheeled into the locker room. Butler scored 19 points before leaving with the injury.

Developer wants to build hotel, apartment complex on Lincoln Highway

bkeeperman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – City Council members on Monday will hear Shodeen’s development proposal for property along Lincoln Highway west of downtown DeKalb.

Geneva-based Shodeen wants to build a 128-room, four-story Marriott brand hotel along with a 187-unit, five-story apartment complex on the property, which is in the city’s central area tax increment financing district.

Shodeen proposes 464 parking spaces for the development, which would leave hotel employees and residents of the 459 bedroom apartment building with 336 spaces when the hotel is booked up.

The plan originally went before DeKalb’s Planning and Zoning Commission, where members worried there would not be enough room for parking and that Shodeen didn’t plan to include any space for retail or commercial users on the ground floor.

“I think the detailed content of development is yet to be finalized,” he said.

“I think developing that property is an economic opportunity for the community and would benefit the city.”

The apartments would be high-amenity, luxury spaces in what Shodden calls

“University Commons,” according to city documents.

Shodeen has owned the property for 10 years and has brought similar development ideas before the city in the past.

In 2014, the city shot down a proposed $30 million hotel and conference center.

In 2008, an idea called “NB&T Square” was put forth but never materialized af-

ter the Great Recession hammered real estate markets.

Because the property is located in the city’s Central Area TIF District, Shodeen has asked for financial assistance from the city in the past.

Fourth Ward Alderman Bob Snow said he wasn’t on board with the idea of putting forward any money this time around.

“I think more apartments are good,” he said. “But I’m not willing to subsidize the building of apartments.”

NIU’s new diversity officer already has plans in works Northern Illinois University students, faculty by the numbers

By RHONDA GILLESPIE rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Vernese Edghill-Walden, Northern Illinois University’s new diversity chief, said she’s already identified areas for improvement and has plans to start campus conversations that may eventually spill into the surrounding community.

“At the end of the day, it’s really about making sure that every student has a really solid Huskie experience. And what that looks like for different students is different, but it’s something that I think is obtainable,” Edghill-Walden said.

She started in August, hired to be the university’s chief diversity officer. A diversity and inclusion task force convened one year before her arrival made the recommendation for NIU to create the position.

Most of the state’s 12 public university campuses already had a diversity officer, even if the title isn’t quite the same.

The task force also provided over a dozen recommendations for unifying the different racial, ethnic, cultural and other groups that compose the student body of about 20,000 – one the largest state universities. After one semester in the new position, Edghill-Walden said the recommendations have provided a “blueprint” for changes, and she’s identified some things herself.

“I think NIU has a wealth of diversity, lots of really good programs and resource centers,” said Edghill-Walden, who was provost and chief academic officer at City Colleges of Chicago before coming to NIU. “I think the community is definitely committed to diversity and inclusion.”

She said there’s been a demand from students for more cultural acceptances. In fact, making students feel more connected to the campus and surrounding communities was a top task force recommendation.

“They have to see themselves in the events and the programming,” she said.

More than half of NIU’s undergraduates are white (57 percent) and male (51 percent). But the school’s lush diversity of freshmen to seniors includes women (49 percent) and students of color: 16 percent African American, 15 percent Hispanic and 5 percent Asian.

The task force said the school’s outreach to minorities, women, people with disabilities, international students and members of the LGBTQ community had long been splintered.

“Our campus is very segregated, especially among students,” said Miki Grace, a senior political science major and the director of student life for the Student Association. “I think that cuts down on what we can share with one another and what we can teach one another.”

Several campus organizations exist to serve those demographics, but Edghill-Walden said they often weren’t communicating with each other. She said she’s moving to change that. Already she’s formed a joint commission made up of the leaders from each of four groups that advise Baker’s office.

The joint committee could soon join other faculty and staff to work on a campus climate survey, she said.

Much of Edghill-Walden’s first semester focused on student-centered diversity issues.

She said the university will be looking to review its faculty makeup to see what “opportunities” for diversity may exist. University data indicates that 75 percent of NIU’s 1,174 instructors are white. The number of African American, Asian and Hispanic faculty combined makes up only 12 percent.

Budget constraints could play a role in implementing changes int that area, she said.

SYCAMORE – Teacher layoffs have been proposed in Sycamore School District 427 as the district heads into the second year of its three-year budget reduction plan.

“Unfortunately, we will be reducing some positions,” District-427 Superintendent Kathy Countryman said “We’re looking at the financial constraints of the district and unknown enrollment. … It’s very difficult for us to have to make those decisions, but we have to make sure we are being fiscally responsible.”

District officials presented the board with a $2.5 million budget reduction plan at its last meeting, but board members told them to look to cut a little deeper, Countryman said. Last year, the board approved a three-year, $3.8 million budget reduction plan and this is the second year. The district began the school year facing a $2.3 million deficit.

Positions throughout the district

will be eliminated, but Countryman declined to give a number of how many people would be affected by the plan.

The school board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the administration building at 245 W. Exchange St., Sycamore.

A public hearing on the reductions will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at the administration building.

The district has run a budget deficit for the past several years and the goal is to get to a balanced budget by next year, Countryman said.

“We are looking at operations, transportation and faculty use throughout the district,” she said.

“We are looking at a combination of things as we’re putting the plan together from last year.”

Class sizes at the elementary and middle school levels shouldn’t be affected, Countryman said.

High-schoolers haven’t enrolled for their courses yet, so she said it wasn’t clear if the cutbacks would affect high school class sizes.

Developer John Pappas opened Ellwood Steak and Fish House in 2015. It takes up 4,200 square feet in the retail center that Pappas had built on the former Small’s Furniture City site. Pappas got $432,900 in tax increment financing incentives from DeKalb for the $4.2 million development.

“I think the way to improve downtown shopping is to have more shoppers,” he said. “Not necessarily more

Kate Noreiko, 5th Ward Alderwoman, said that while more housing is needed in her ward, the lack of parking could pose a problem. “”I think we need to carefully take a look at the number of parking spaces,” she said. “Because that has been a concern expressed to me by residents.”

DeKalb police investigating shooting; no one injured

By DAILY CHRONICLE news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – DeKalb police are investigating a shooting that occurred Wednesday in the 800 block of Russell Road, officials said.

Police responded to a call about 4:30 p.m., but the shooter had already

fled the scene, DeKalb police Cmdr.

Robert Redel said. No one was injured.

“The suspect was last seen running southbound on Russell Road,” he said.

Police recovered shell casings from the scene but didn’t find the weapon.

The investigation is ongoing.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Chicago police said late Friday they believe six family members found dead in their southwest side home were killed in a “targeted incident,” although they’re still trying to determine a possible motive.

It’s possible someone in the family “was involved in something that could have targeted them,” or that the killings occurred during a robbery or a domestic incident, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

Police found the six people – two children, two women and two men – dead on Thursday after one of the men’s co-workers called 911 to report he hadn’t shown up to work for two days.

Authorities initially said it was possible one person killed the other five before taking his or her own life. But the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office on Friday ruled their deaths homicides, saying five were stabbed to death and the sixth died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Police have added extra patrols as a precaution, although Guglielmi on Friday repeated earlier police statements that they don’t believe the general public is in danger. There was no forced entry into the home and the house wasn’t ransacked.

“This appears certainly centered and targeted on that family, and what we’re trying to do is figure out why,”

SPRINGFIELD – FBI data show Illinois has recorded 38 gun-related domestic violence homicides since 2006, but the number is likely higher because the data is incomplete.

Only the Chicago and Rockford police departments report firearm-related domestic violence homicides to the FBI. The Illinois State Police said the relationship of a homicide victim to the offender is considered supplementary data that is not required to be reported.

NAPERVILLE – Gov. Bruce Rauner has announced proposals he said would help shrink Illinois government and its costs. The proposals include legislation allowing voters to decide whether to dissolve units of local government.

The Republican publicized four bills Friday in Naperville. Officials there are considering merging road-maintenance services with a township.

Three bills are aimed at making township consolidation easier with specific plans for Evanston and DuPage County.

The other allows voters to petition for a referendum.

Rauner said the proposals are a step toward “reducing layers of redundant bureaucracy” for Illinois’ roughly 7,000 government units.

Teacher charged with using app to arrange sex with teen

TROY– A high school math teacher faces felony charges after police in southern Illinois said he used an anonymous social media app to arrange a sexual encounter with an eighth-grader.

Twenty-five-year-old Kevin Battas was charged Wednesday in Madison County with grooming and indecent solicitation of a child using the Internet.

Troy police said the Mount Vernon teacher was arrested before he could meet a 14-year-old whom he initially connected with by text messages using the Whisper app. The teen’s mother alerted police to the conversations.

Rauner touts government consolidation legislation

A relative said six people lived in the home – a couple, their son, their daughter and the daughter’s two children.

“They were a normal family. Everything was fine,” the relative, Noemi Martinez, 29, said from Dallas during a phone interview in Spanish. She said her husband was a nephew and cousin of the home’s residents.

Martinez said the father worked at a factory in Chicago and the mother was a housewife. They were originally from the Mexican state of Guanajuato and had lived in Chicago for about a decade, Martinez said.

“Right now, we just want to know who did this. They didn’t deserve this.

We don’t understand what happened,” she said.

In the neighborhood, three teenage boys said they were worried about a classmate at Rachel Carson Elementary School who lived in the home. They feared he was among the dead.

“His favorite sport was soccer,” Aaron Villazana said of his friend. Emmanuel Hernandez chimed in: “He’d get out of school and play soccer. ... He liked sharing.”

“I just saw him three days ago. He was walking by. He told me, ‘How are your basketball games going?’ ” said Jesus Anderade.

Earlier, Rosa De La Torre’s 13-yearold son comforted her as she sat down and sobbed near the home, worried a friend could be among the victims.

The Texas senator’s general election strategy depends almost wholly upon maximizing turnout among millions of conservative white voters – mostly evangelical Christians and the white working class – who didn’t participate in the last presidential contest.

At the same time, Cruz’s team is banking on a sharp decline in black and Hispanic support for the 2016 Democratic nominee, whoever it is, returning to voter trends before Barack Obama shook up the electorate as the nation’s first black president and won an overwhelming share of support from nonwhite voters.

It is a strategy that defies the conventional wisdom in the GOP that says the party can win the White House again only if it appeals to political moderates and nonwhite voters who are becoming a greater share of the voting-age population as each day passes.

“I’m an outlier,” said longtime Cruz aide Jason Johnson, the chief architect of the Cruz playbook, which he concedes is not in line with modern-day Republican thinking.

Yet with overwhelming confidence born from a year of studying voter trends, Johnson insists the first-term Texas senator can win

the general election by motivating a coalition of his party’s most reliable supporters.

“It is absolutely the case that in 2012, there were a little over 2 million fewer white non-Hispanics that voted compared to 2008,” Johnson said this week in an interview with The Associated Press. “They sat it out.”

The strategy will not be tested unless Cruz survives the long road ahead in his party’s hotly contested nomination process to represent the GOP in November’s general election.

Still, general election viability has emerged as a major theme in the days leading up to New Hampshire’s Tuesday primary among the leading Republican candidates.

Many Washington Republicans warn that Cruz is simply too conservative to appeal to the wide swath of voters that typically decide general elections.

“They are just wrong about this,” said Republican operative Matthew Dowd, who served as the chief political strategist for George W. Bush. “It is about both motivation and persuasion. You can’t motivate your base and at same time turn off moderates and independents.”

But Cruz this week repeatedly declared that his team assembled a coalition in Iowa that would translate into general election success.

“We saw conservatives and evangelicals and libertarians and Reagan Democrats all coming together,” he said during a town hall-style meeting at a Portsmouth Toyota dealership.

RECIFE, Brazil – The first time I met Solange Ferreira was in December. She was at a hospital, waiting to hear from a doctor whether her baby boy had what so many in her village were talking about – microcephaly, or an abnormally small head that could be a sign of severe disabilities and a shortened life-expectancy.

I had no doubt that little Jose, born in September, had the condition that many experts believe is linked to the Zika virus.

His head was notably small, his skull practically flat.

“Everybody says he has a small head, but I don’t know what’s going on,” Ferreira, a 38-year-old maid, told me while she waited in Caruaru, a city in northeast Brazil near Recife, where the Zika virus has hit hardest.

As so many other mothers I have interviewed and photographed, Ferreira asked me what I thought.

I said nothing.

I didn’t want to be the one to dash her hopes that Jose would be fine.

When she emerged from the doctor’s office, she told me the news.

She had come alone to the hospital

The boy would scream uncontrollably for long stretches, getting red in the face and tightening his already stiff limbs.

He also struggled to feed, something I had learned was common in children with neurological disorders.

The pictures of Jose in the bucket would have a large impact on me and on readers around the world. So this week I decided to visit the family again.

Ferreira cried when she said she had realized that Jose may never run and play like her two older children.

I realized then that the full weight of what Ferreira was up against had hit her.

This wasn’t a temporary problem, a challenge that would eventually be overcome.

Now a little older than 4 months, Jose would need extreme care for the rest of his life.

Our View: Thumbs-down to talk of Kish College layoffs

Thumbs-down: To plans for a local in-home senior care provider to close. Lutheran Social Servies of Illinois is the latest social service provider to say it would discontinue service to DeKalb County residents, saying it will stop offering in-home care to local seniors later this month. Employees and clients of Lutheran Social Services could find a home with Help At Home, as that company’s CEO said it plans to offer in-home services as well as open a new adult day center in DeKalb. Although that’s a positive development, it’s disappointing to see more service providers being starved of state funding until they’re forced to close Thumbs-down: To talk of layoffs at Kishwaukee College. The school has not received about $5 million in state aid, more than 20 percent of its $23 million budget for this school year. It’s understandable that such measures might be necessary in the face of the state’s dereliction of its duty to fund higher education, but it’s not something that will make the quality of education any better.

Thumbs-down: To early voting without ballots.

We’re supporters of early voting, and of any initiatives that make it easier for the public to exercise their right to vote. However, if we’re going to have voting begin more than five weeks before Election Day, then state and local officials need to make sure that the needed materials can be ready to voters around the state at that time, just as we would expect they be ready March 15.

Thumbs-up: To ESPN’s “30 for 30” show that focused on the 1985 Chicago Bears, who won Super Bowl XX in January 1986. The show not only let longtime Bears fans relive some of that team’s great triumphs and drama, but also the sorrows that followed, from the loss of Walter “Sweetness” Payton and Dave Duerson, to the continued relationships that the members of that iconic team have with one another and with ailing defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan. Those Bears, that year, were larger than life, and if you were a fan, the show is a must-see.

Thumbs-up: To completing the boundary-redrawing process. The DeKalb School District 428 board this week approved a plan that will create new attendance boundaries for its eight elementary and two middle schools. The new boundaries are designed to keep more children attending their “home” schools, rather than being bussed to other buildings farther away. The redrawing process took place over a twoyear period and took public opinion into account.

Redrawing boundaries can be a tumultuous process, but it appears the district has worked out a solution.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Mental Health Court is coming to county Dear Editor: I would like to thank the Daily Chronicle for the recent series on mental health issues in DeKalb County, and for your editorial calling for more to be done. As the State’s Attorney and a member of the DeKalb County Treatment Court Team, I welcome your support for our Mental Health Court Program.

However, this is not a ‘proposed solution’, which should be further studied. The DeKalb County Mental Health Court is a reality, which will be implemented and in full operation in the next few months.

After nearly two years of study, our Mental Health Court proposal was approved for state funding through Redeploy Illinois last fall. Had a state budget been in effect these funds would already have been disbursed and this program would now have been in operation for several months.

We know mental health courts work, at a fraction of the cost of incarceration because this has been proven around the country.

It will save this county money by treating people outside our jail, rather than inside.

The cost of a counselor and a case manager will be paid primarily through Redeploy

Illinois, administered through the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority.

Redeploy funding is offered, and continued, for useful evidenced-based programs, which divert nonviolent offenders who would otherwise be prison bound. It incentivizes local governments to implement programs that save money both at the state and local levels, and provide better outcomes for all concerned.

I look forward to the day when budgetary issues in Springfield are resolved, and funds will finally be made available, as promised, to begin this new and worthwhile addition to our DeKalb County Treatment Court.

Good. It sounds as if the governor respects small government principles and would protect taxpayers.

Nope.

Christie had a few options.

Washington Post reporter David Fahrenthold points out that the governor could have done “nothing and let the free market drive out the weaker casinos, hope that the city government and the big casino corporations would innovate their way out of the problem.”

That was the small-government option.

There would have been upheaval.

Some bills wouldn’t get paid in full.

But heck, Atlantic City “had been rendered fat and inefficient” by casino taxes.

It paid “$1 million a year in pensions for long-retired city lifeguards who only ever worked four months a year,” wrote Fahrenthold.

Time to cut fat. Instead, Christie partnered with Democrats to embrace a big-government option.

His advisers wanted to take over the entire city.

Christie’s concession to limited

government was that he took over only half – mostly the fun part: all 11 casinos.

Christie put them under the oversight of a state agency.

He said those bureaucrats would restore Atlantic City and again vowed, “You have my word that it’s going to be done without any government money.”

Dream on. The agency used eminent domain to grab properties for development.

Bureaucrats spent millions on public art projects, like a statue of a nude woman holding a dead deer.

Somehow that didn’t inspire tourists to rush to Atlantic City.

The state spent on TV ads and came up with a slogan: “Do AC.” It didn’t help.

Casinos kept going bankrupt, as did a giant unfinished hotel/casino, the Revel.

Christie decided that the state should finish it.

He got the legislature to promise $261 million in tax incentives and a $2 million grant.

That “no tax money” pledge? Gone.

Now taxpayers were “investing.”

“We are going to make the type of investment,” said Christie, “to make sure that we bring this city to a new renaissance.”

The renaissance never came.

The Revel opened, lost money and filed for bankruptcy a year later.

It’s now a 47-story hulk with 1,000

empty rooms.

Its new owner considered naming it the Tower of Geniuses.

That would be a good name for Obamacare, “temporary” farm subsidies, Alaska’s “bridge to nowhere” and lots of other boondoggles designed by politicians.

So is Christie apologetic after spending millions of taxpayer dollars on failure?

No, of course not.

Recently he was asked whether, in hindsight, he would have done anything differently. “Nothing,” Christie replied.

Politicians never apologize. They charge forward.

Their solution to failed government investment is more government.

Last week Christie announced that the state would take over all of Atlantic City, claiming, “Greater state involvement makes sense.”

He said the new Atlantic City will “be delivered at an affordable cost to the taxpayers.”

Sure.

And Mexico will pay for a giant wall, stimulus spending will revive the economy and arming Syrian rebels will bring peace.

The arrogance of the political class is endless.

Obama’s visit to a mosque is an appeal for inclusion When President Barack Obama visited a synagogue in Washington in May, his second time at a Jewish house of worship in this country as chief executive, there wasn’t a peep from the Republican candidates seeking their party’s presidential nomination. Yet when Obama turned up at the Islamic Society of Baltimore on Wednesday, his first visit to an American mosque after seven years in office, Republican presidential hopefuls Donald Trump and Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida let loose a toxic barrage of snark and sanctimony.

The president’s message at the suburban Baltimore mosque was patriotic, inclusive, tolerant and empathetic – it was, in short, presidential.

Mindful of FBI statistics and reports of rising vandalism, threats and other hate crimes against American Muslims and mosques – including

the mosque in Baltimore he visited Obama delivered a timely reminder that Muslims belong in the United States and are as fully American as Christians, Jews and any other citizens. In that sense his remarks were, almost literally, all-American.

It’s fair to say the president waited too long to visit an American mosque, though he’s been to ones overseas.

Hate crimes against American Muslims and places of worship have quintupled since Sept. 11, 2001, and they jumped again in 2014 even as such crimes declined against other groups, according to the FBI. (In raw numbers, there are still more hate crimes directed at Jews than Muslims in the United States.)

Since the terrorist attacks in Paris in November and in San Bernardino, California, the next month, there has been a new spike in hate crimes

against Muslims and mosques, including vandalism, graffiti, verbal threats and assaults.

They are a gift to the Islamic State and encouraged, intentionally or not,

by Trump, Rubio, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, Ben Carson and other GOP luminaries, who have cynically taken the terrorists’ carnage as opportunities to whip up xenophobic fear and venom.

So Obama’s visit, even if overdue, was timely.

It was a refutation of the hate-baiting on the Republican stump – calls to exclude Muslim immigrants (Trump, et al.), disqualify American Muslim presidential candidates (Carson) and conflate anti-Muslim hate speech with efforts to combat terrorism (Cruz). His speech was a reminder of what makes Americans American – not citizens’ place of worship but rather their allegiance to certain

principles, including tolerance.

To that positive and patriotic message, Trump responded with his trademark sneer and umpteenth intimation that Obama, a Christian, is a closet Muslim. “I don’t have much thought,” Trump said, accurately. “Maybe he feels comfortable there. ... There are a lot of places he can go, and he chose a mosque.”

Rubio somehow contorted the president’s message of inclusiveness into “pitting people against each other.”

This, the Floridian said piously, “is hurting our country badly.”

What’s hurting the country badly are hate-mongers who would rather betray American values by appealing to bigotry than address the reality of 2 million to 3 million American Muslims, the overwhelming majority of them patriotic, who are as entitled to dignity and respect as everyone else.

After the Iowa caucus results, it looks like Hillary Clinton vs. Marco Rubio in November.

This scares me. Neither candidate shows any interest in limited government.

They scoff at anyone who suggests that their grand schemes do more harm than good.

But big government does do more harm than good.

I shouldn’t single out Rubio or Clinton, or even Donald Trump.

Almost everyone running for office today declares himself a “leader” who “gets things done.”

There’s no modesty, little acknowledgement that so much of what government does is costly attempts to fix problems that government created at home and abroad.

In the book “The Fatal Conceit,” Frederick Hayek wrote, “The curious task of economics is to demonstrate to men how little they really know about what they imagine they can design.”

I wish politicians understood that. Chris Christie clearly doesn’t.

He wins my vote for worst presidential candidate this week because of what he’s doing to New Jersey’s taxpayers in the name of “fixing” Atlantic City.

Six years ago, Christie promised to “reform” and “rebuild” Atlantic City “without government money.”

Not just the sudden and heartbreaking death of the brother he loved so much, but the number of people who showed up to Billy’s wake. The doors opened at Davenport Funeral Home in Crystal Lake at 3:30 p.m. that day.

Then the wave after wave of friends and family didn’t stop.

“There was a nonstop flow of people until 10 at night,” Michael said. “It didn’t stop. From what I’ve heard, normally there’s a break. The line – we never got a break. It never stopped. People just kept coming.”

There was a strong bond between the two brothers that not even a first date could separate.

Knights exploit Bemis’ absence

By EDDIE CARIFIO ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – With Brett Bemis on the bench, the Sycamore boys basketball team was missing not only a 6-foot6 presence inside, but a ball-handling option against the press.

The Spartans could have used both aspects of Bemis’ game in a 50-33 home loss to Kaneland on Friday.

“It hurts, because he gives us another scorer, some size inside, another rebounder,” Sycamore coach Andrew Stacy said. “It’s not only the scoring we miss, but he does a great job of handling the press and bringing the ball up against pressure, seeing up over top.

We struggled against pressure like that tonight, and he could of done a good job about getting us into our offense.”

Stacy would not say what Bemis’ injury was, but did say he expects him back “sooner rather than later,” and that he didn’t have a more specific timeframe.

Kaneland coach Joe Conroy said his Knights (13-5 overall, 5-1 Northern Illi-

nois Big 12 East) tried getting the ball to the inside from the start once they noticed Bemis wasn’t playing.

“I thought we played really well,” Conroy said. “I thought we were able to exploit some things because obviously Sycamore was a little short-handed with Brett Bemis on the bench in street clothes. But I thought defensively we played really well.”

Half of the Knights’ first 16 points came on layups, and they also hit four of their first five 3-point attempts in building a 19-9 lead after one quarter and a 2711 advantage late in the second quarter.

“We’re trying to figure out (that) if we play inside first, the outside shots will start to fall,” Conroy said. “I thought early in the game we did that, and I thought that led to our success.”

The Knight shot 8 for 14 in the first quarter but finished the game only 19 for 50. They made 11 baskets in the first half, Sycamore (11-10, 5-4) made only 11 in the game.

Kaneland held Sycamore without an offensive rebound until 1:04 was left in

the first half. Sycamore also committed 19 turnovers, leading to 17 Kaneland points.

Conroy said the team has been looking to convert turnovers into points with its speed since the start of the season.

“That was our discussion as a team at the beginning of the year,” Conroy said. “We didn’t want to just walk it up every time. We wanted to play that way, so it was nice to see that come together for us tonight.”

Ryan David led the Knights with 14 points, while Jack Mizgalski had 14 for the Spartans. No other Sycamore player scored more than six, and the other four starters scored only eight points combined. Dylan Vaca scored 12 for the Knights, and Kaneland teammates Jake Gomes and Mitchel Goren led all players with five rebounds each – despite Gomes missing most of the first half with foul trouble.

“I thought the first half we didn’t play very well defensively, and the second half we picked it up a little bit,” Stacy said. “But we just have to be more solid on the defensive.”

After splitting the first two meetings against the Kaneland girls basketball team, the Foxes jumped out early and cruised to a 55-37 victory Friday night at Kaneland High School.

“We didn’t have a lot of energy,” Knights coach Ernie Colombe said.

“They’re a good team. We came out with no energy – part of that is literally, we have about 11 kids sick. We’re trying to stay afloat. No excuses, though, we didn’t have the energy.”

The Knights (19-4, 7-4 in Northern Illinois Big 12 East) beat Yorkville, 42-33, at the Ottawa tournament in December, but the Foxes (21-2, 12-0) won, 48-47, in the first conference meeting Jan. 15 and locked up the NI Big 12 East championship Friday.

“We made shots early,” Yorkville coach Luke Engelhardt said. “We haven’t come out of the gates well in the first quarter and we’ve been a little uptight and a lot of the same looks we had today, we’ve been missing. We’ve been having good games with [Kaneland] every year, so it’s nice to get this series.”

SOMONAUK – Coming out of the locker room at halftime, the Indian Creek boys basketball team took the floor looking like a different team than in the first half.

The Timberwolves were unable to sustain their halftime lead over Newark, eventually losing the Little Ten Conference championship game, 63-50, Friday night in Somonauk.

Indian Creek (15-7, 5-1 LTC) looked to be on top of its game early, holding the advantage on defense and connecting on offensive fast-break opportunities in building a 30-28 halftime lead. The Timberwolves were almost perfect from behind the arc – guard Trevor Guerra was 4 for 5 from 3-point range and finished with 18 point. Indian Creek’s leading scorer was Charles Schmitt, who had 20 points.

In the final minutes of the second quarter, Indian Creek saw its 25-15 lead disappear after turnovers and missed shots gave Newark (22-2, 7-0) a 10-0 run to tie the score at 25. That trend spilled over into the second half for the Timberwolves.

The DeKalb girls basketball team rolled to a 43-32 road win against Morris on Friday.

Alyassa Burgess scored 12 points to lead the Barbs (7-20, 4-8 Northern Illinois Big 12 East), while A’Jah Davis added 10.

G-K falls to Burlington Central: The Cogs lost to the Rockets, 55-12.

No stats were available for the Cogs (13-11, 8-4 Big Northern Conference East).

Playoff schedules announced: The IHSA announced the schedule for the Class 3A and 4A girls basketball playoffs, which begin Feb. 15.

Continued from page 22 on a date to the movie theater. Billy’s date sat between the brothers and, after continually checking over at his little brother during the previews, Billy asked his date if they could switch seats so he could sit next to Michael.

It was not just the sheer volume of people to show up to honor Billy at the wake that surprised him. Instead, it’s what he heard from those visitors during the more than six hours of the wake.

Michael said he knew his older brother was proud of him – he just didn’t realize the extent of it.

“There were so many stories (at the wake), literally story after story after story was people telling us how he would just not stop talking about me,” Michael said. “All day at work, not stop talking about me. Showing people videos of me. Telling people he had to leave work early to get to the game. I always knew he was proud of me. It was just a whole another level than I thought.

“He didn’t stop talking about me no matter where he was.”

• • • Michael isn’t sure how birthdays will feel from now on.

The accident that took Billy’s life in

Hoffman Estates occurred Aug. 7 – a day before Michael’s birthday. The family – including parents Bill and Lisa Orris, co-pastors of Hope Church in Crystal Lake – was heading out the door to see a concert when a police officer notified them about the accident.

Michael dropped to his knees in shock. Eventually, hearing his parents break down at the news was too difficult to handle.

“After hearing my parents and their reaction, I couldn’t listen to it, so I just ran out of the house and just started walking,” Michael said. “I walked down the streets and through my neighborhood. I just had to get out of there. It’s hard to listen to your parents like that. At that point, I was in that shock mode.”

Michael’s girlfriend, Hamidah Ishan Ahmad, took over his phone for the next few days – responding to texts of condolences – while his sister, Lauren, took over their parents’ phones.

It was Hamidah who called NIU coach Mark Montgomery to tell him the news.

“His girlfriend called me and she was screaming on the phone and I thought something happened to Michael, so ...” Montgomery said, unable to finish his thought.

Michael said the temptation to fall into the darkness of the bottom of a bottle, “was never an option,” in the

months since the accident. There is sorrow and hurt – it can make it tough to get out of bed sometimes – but he takes solace in his faith. Everything happens for a reason.

“I know people always say that and people hate hearing that when bad things happen, but Billy loved God more than anything in this world and him being with his creator, it makes him the happiest guy in the world,” Michael said. “Yeah, we’re hurting down here, but how can I be that selfish to know he’s at where he’s always wanted to be?”

Billy is buried near Crystal Lake and Michael said he might visit his grave on his late brother’s birthday, Feb. 21. As far as Michael’s birthday – a painful reminder of the death of his brother – he said he thinks he’ll know how he’ll feel when it comes, but believes it will be a combination of celebration and reflection.

“Obviously, the day before, the day he died, that’s going to be a day – every emotion under the sun,” Michael said. “Moving on the next day, it will definitely be just as hard, but not only celebrating my life and my birth, but his life and his rebirth to where he is now.”

However, while he’s on the bench, he still will look across the court to the spot Billy used to sit in – a few rows up, usually the aisle seat.

Michael was in junior high when he began to beat his brother and his friends on a regular basis on the basketball court. That didn’t stop the bigger brother in Billy.

“He thought he was so good,” Michael laughed. “Even when I [played] at Kansas State (freshman year), and I was at a major college, he still thought he was better than me at basketball.”

The thought of walking away from the game never entered Michael’s mind after Billy’s death. Being a guard at NIU was his job, he said, that’s what he signed up to do. Although his world stopped after the accident, the world around him continued. By continuing his basketball career, he could honor his brother.

That’s why before the season, Michael came to Montgomery with a simple request – can he switch his jersey number from No. 55 to No. 24?

“That was Billy’s favorite number,” Michael said. “When he played sports, he loved that number. Every one of his email passwords, any password he needed for any account, there was always a 24 attached to it. I thought it would be a pretty cool tribute if I changed it.”

David Brin, a scientist and award-winning author of science fiction, said, “There’s no doubt that scientific training helps many authors to write better science fiction. And yet, several of the very best were English majors who could not parse a differential equation to save their lives.”

At the bridge table, we love majors and dislike minors up to the game-level, because in a major we have to win one fewer trick to get the game bonus.

However, when climbing up to a slam, minors are fine because we need 12 or 13 tricks whatever the strain.

When you have game values but do not find a major-suit fit, you steer toward three no-trump. Only if you are sure that contract cannot make, do you – kicking and screaming! – play in five of a minor.

So, at a low level, we try to find a major-suit fit. Look at the South hand in today’s diagram. After opening one diamond and hearing partner respond one heart, South must rebid one spade, not two diamonds. If partner does not raise spades, South can show his long diamond suit on the next round. Here, of course, North raises to two spades (promising fourcard support), and South jumps to four spades – when you smell a game, bid that game.

The defenders start with three rounds of clubs. After ruffing, how should declarer continue?

South must get his diamond suit established, and the heart king is a red herring. Declarer should draw two rounds of trumps, cash the diamond ace-king, ruff a diamond on the board, play a heart to his ace, and lead out winning diamonds. He loses only two clubs and one trump.

“The anatomy of the hip allows you to do a total hip replacement on anyone who needs it,” says my Harvard Medical School colleague Dr. Donald Reilly. “But not everyone has the right anatomy for hip resurfacing.” That includes small women with poor bone quality and people with certain femoral head anatomies that make femur fractures more likely. That was not a problem in my case: I could have had hip resurfacing.

The most important question is: How good are the results of hip replacement versus hip resurfacing? A recent study published in the British Medical Journal found that the results in the first few years are similar.

However, hip resurfacing is new enough that we don’t yet know how long-lasting the positive effects are.

Traditional total hip replacement surgery has been practiced for nearly 50 years; we know a lot about the long-term results. The artificial parts of the new hip tend to last between 15 and 20 years.

Finally, there’s an increased risk of a particular fracture in hip resurfacing patients. If that fracture occurs, then you need a second operation – a hip replacement.

I decided that since I probably had at least 20 more years to live, I would have hip replacement: It was likely to last as long as I did.

Dear Dr. K: My hip has bad arthritis, and my doctor says I need either a hip replacement or something called “hip resurfacing.” Which one is best?

Dear reader: I once had to ask myself that same question, when my right hip became so painful from arthritis that something needed to be done.

Let me first explain what each type of surgery is, and then how to think about the choice between them.

The hip is a ball-andsocket joint. The ball – the top of the femur – fits into the socket, the cupshaped area in the pelvis called the acetabulum. In a total hip replacement, the surgeon removes the damaged surface of the socket, and also removes the femoral head and the neck of the femur. Then the surgeon replaces the surface of the socket and the top of the femur bone with artificial components.

In a hip resurfacing, the surgeon replaces the socket – just as in a hip replacement. However, the surgeon keeps the femur in place, reshapes the ball on top of the femur and places an artificial cap (a new “surface”) on top of the ball. So both the ball and the socket have a new surface, but less surgery is done. Less bone is removed, and less soft tissue around the bone is injured. That’s the attraction of hip resurfacing: It’s simpler and faster than hip replacement. The recovery time is the same: three days in the hospital, followed by four to six weeks of physical therapy. Insurance pays for both procedures.

So far, so good. Based on what I’ve said so far, I might have chosen hip resurfacing over hip replacement. But not everyone who needs hip

Dear Abby: Every December my wife virtually buries our home in Christmas decorations. It’s not just the tree and stockings in the living room; she’s not happy until there are Christmas towels and Christmas soap in the bathroom and another tree and knicky-knacky stuff downstairs. Not even a doorknob is safe from decoration.

It drives me nuts; I feel so claustrophobic. I bump into these decorations everywhere I turn. I was raised differently, more simply. There was a tree in the living room and stockings hung from the mantel. That was it.

For the last 20 years of our marriage, I have suggested – unsuccessfully – that we compromise and alternate every other year. One year her way, the next mine. When I do, she tearfully accuses me of being Scrooge.
