Enjoying welcome back pizza The first meal my family has when we return from a vacation is always pizza.

If you’re one of the dozens of people who contacted me Monday to voice your opinion about the redesign of the Daily Chronicle, you know that I was out of the office. In fact, for much of Monday, my family and I were flying back from the Hawaiian island of Maui.

The toughest part of any vacation is usually the end – at least, if you’ve had a good time – but it also can be fun to return to familiar surroundings after several days away.

The sights and sounds and smells of the place you call home are, if not new, at least less familiar than they are when you’re around them day-in, day-out. Sensory details such as how the air smells, how the town looks and feels as your drive in, what it feels like to open the door to your home and walk in as a newcomer – they’re all much more vivid when you’ve been away.

WOODSTOCK – Heavy jackets and winter hats will soon be a memory.

Woodstock Willie reluctantly lumbered out of his tree stump Tuesday morning underneath a cloudy sky to find his shadow was not there. The declaration that this year would bring an early spring – despite the light precipitation that started to sprinkle after the annual prognostication – inspired cheers and applause from the crowd that descended on the Woodstock Square.

Sue Carolan of Wonder Lake flipped a flap of paper from the sign she’s brought to the celebration for the past decade, revealing the phrase “I did not see my shadow” next to a drawing of a groundhog.

“This year was a great year,” Carolan said, groundhog earrings dangling above her shoulders.

“The weather is beautiful. It’s much better than last year when we had all the snow.”

It’s that time of year.

On Wednesday, schools across the country will celebrate National Signing Day, when incoming recruits can finally sign their letter of intent to play at a certain university in 2016.

For Daily Chroincle sport reporter Jesse Severson, it’s more appropriate to call it National Overreaction Day. Fans from around the nation will obsess over the number stars a players has on scouting websites – fawning over the players with more of them and dreading those who don’t quite have enough.

“He’s only a two-star recruit!” fans will cry out.

“The other school’s got more three-star recruits!” they will complain.

“We need more stars with our recruits!” they will yell exasperatedly.

Off medications, mentally ill can become danger to self, others

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Charlotte and Carl Lupton pushed hard against their bedroom door desperate to keep the man on the other side from getting in.

The attacker was their son, Cameron, a 6-foot 5-inch, 200-pound Army veteran. He was armed with a footlong carving knife and suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.

“He kept squinting really strange at me and then he just lunged at me and said, ‘it’s all your fault,’ ” Cameron’s stepmother Charlotte Lupton said of the day in January 2014 when Cameron Lupton, 28, snapped.

Most people with a mental illness are nonviolent and not considered a public danger, Cameron according to research Lupton published by the American Psychological Association. Only 3 percent to 5 percent of violent acts can be attributed to people living with a serious mental illness. In fact, people with severe mental illnesses are 10 times more likely than the general population to be victims of a violent crime.

Liza Long, a college English instructor and mother from Idaho, took to her computer to write a controversial blog post shortly after the murder of six children and 20 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

The post, “I am Adam Lanza’s Mother,” chronicled how Long used to live in fear of her son’s violent outbursts, admitting that she feared he could become the next young rampage killer.

“A few weeks ago, Michael pulled a knife and threatened to kill me and then himself after I asked him to return his overdue library books,” Long wrote.

For a long time her family’s safety felt like a guessing game – that is until she found a doctor willing to diagnose and treat a boy medical professionals called “severely emotionally disturbed,” Long said. Long describes herself as a typical Idaho soccer mom, but she has also been an outspoken advocate for treating the mentally ill.

D-428 OKs new elementary, middle school boundaries

By BRITTANY KEEPERMAN bkeeperman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – DeKalb School District 428’s Board members voted to implement new school boundaries for its eight elementary schools and two middle schools.

The board voted unanimously Tuesday to redraw the boundaries with no discussion, although the process has been two years in the making.

The plans have been revised since the original public viewing at community forums to adjust for several families in the area near Ellwood House within Littlejohn Elementary School boundaries who would have been moved to Founders Elementary but are closer to Littlejohn.

Officials said they were pleased with the results.

“I think it is for the best,” District 428 Superintendent Doug Moeller said.

“It should dramatically decrease our overflow.”

The plan will affect about 61 middle school students and 346 elementary-schoolers. Tom Kim, principal of Huntley Middle School, said the changes would offer more classroom space for staff and students.

“It will be just enough to relieve some of the class sizes,” he said. “And

The district has been working with demographer Matthew Cropper to project enrollment statistics in years to come. Now that boundaries have been set, the district shouldn’t have to adjust them for at least another decade. officials said.

The district held community forums throughout November and families were invited to a presentation and map option viewing. They also were asked to provide comments and feedback to school officials regarding the changes.

The main goal of redistricting is to get

all students attending schools within their home boundaries, but students who are enrolled in special programs may not quite be able to fully comply with those guidelines.

Students enrolled in the SOAL and Bridges program will continue to attend the school where they are now, except Littlejohn SOAL and Bridge students, who will transfer to Founders Elementary.

Jefferson, Littlejohn, Founders and Cortland elementary will all offer English language learners programs.

Jefferson ELL students will continue to attend Jefferson no matter how their boundaries change. If a student lives within the Littlejohn boundary and takes ELL, they will go to Littlejohn. Founders and Cortland ELL students who live outside the Littlejohn boundary will stay at their respective schools, according to the district’s final boundaries presentation.

“It really brings a good balance back to the way things were a couple years ago,” Kim said. “And that was a nice healthy balance.”

SOMONAUK – Police are seeking three Aurora men in connection with a scam to steal power tools from the garage of a Somonauk home in September.

Wanted on charges of residential burglary and conspiracy are: Anthony Butler, 19, of the 2400 block of Marigold Court, Aurora, and Tyrone Cooke, 19, of the 1500 block of Burton Court, Aurora.

Police also believe Keyonn Lovelace, 19, of the 400 block of North Union Street, Aurora, was involved in the Anthony burglary. Lovelace is al- Butler ready in custody at the Kane County Jail on unrelated murder

charges, police said.

On Sept. 25, a man approached a home in the 900 block of Prairie View Drive, Somonauk, wearing a traffic safety vest and claiming Keyonn he was there to pick up Lovelace scrap metal, according to a news release from Somonauk police.

The homeowner told the man he hadn’t arranged to have scrap metal picked up, but later noticed two other men Tyrone Cook leaving his garage with power tools. The three men loaded about $300 worth of tools into a white extended cab Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck and took off, according to the news release.

The truck has since been found.

Just days before the attack on the Luptons, family members tried their best to get Cameron Lupton treatment from Edward Hines, Jr. Veterans Administration Hospital in Maywood, for what the family now believes was the beginning of a psychotic break.

However, the hospital was more than an hour’s drive and Cameron wavered in his willingness to travel even a short distance to get help.

“One of the things is, how were we going to get him there? You’ve got an hour drive that way. What happens?

Untreated illness a strain on system

As with Long’s son, who takes a regular dose of lithium to subdue his violent bipolar outbursts, when Cameron Lupton was taking his medication and sticking to a tight schedule, he had a mild-mannered and even funny disposition, Charlotte and Carl Lupton said.

But too often when patients decide to quit taking their mediation, treatment for the mentally ill falls to the justice system, DeKalb Police Chief Gene Lowery said.

“I think it in large part has to do with what’s available. Many of these individuals we encounter, we encounter over and over again,” Lowery said.

“From the police end of this, we do our best to prepare for encounters with people who have mental illnesses, but we are certainly not equipped to re-

solve those issues.”

Cook County Jail is the largest mental health treatment facility in the United States.

In DeKalb County’s jail, about 30 percent of the 3,000 inmates who are housed in the jail each year enter with an valid prescription to treat a mental illness, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Chief of Corrections Joyce Klein said.

Last year, the jail received $50,000 from the DeKalb County Mental Health Board for mental health services such as group and individual counseling, socialization, life skills and crisis intervention, Klein said. The number of inmates using these services is hard to gauge, given the frequency with which people enter and leave county jails.

Different approach is possible

The Luptons believe a system such as mental health court could have saved their son’s life. DeKalb County officials are looking into systems such as mental health court, which would allow mentally ill offenders to avoid jail or prison if they agree to mandatory counseling, and a “co-responders program,” which would allow a mental

health professional to assist police officers on calls.

Most recent research estimates about 17 percent of all jail admissions suffer from a serious mental illness – three to six times the prevalence of serious mental illness in the general population. Jailed people with mental illnesses often simultaneously grapple with substance abuse and other challenges, such as trauma, medical problems and homelessness, Michelle Rock, director of the Illinois Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health and Justice, has said.

“What would really actually help someone else is to make definite sure that if you find out someone does have a mental issue, illness or problem, to make definite sure that they take their meds,” Carl Lupton said. “That’s the No. 1 thing. A person like that has to have family support.”

It’s something police see all the time, but have little control over. When officers come in contact with someone they believe is a threat to themselves or others, police can choose to have that person evaluated by a medical professional. In at least one case, the

person in question was released and committed suicide before police could even finish writing the report, Lowery said.

“It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when the next tragedy will occur,” Lowery said. “Sometimes, all they need is a medication adjustment and to talk to someone and they return home.”

The problem remains, however, knowing that mental illness, as does any other illness, requires professional treatment, Carl Lupton said.

Still, only 44 percent of adults and fewer than 20 percent of minors with diagnosable mental health problems get the needed treatment, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“I’ve had so many families come up to me and say ‘Carl, we have the same thing in our family. We’re dealing with the same thing.’ I don’t know how many people, around even here, just this little bitty town here told me, ‘We’re dealing with the same thing,’ ” he said. “As people, and especially as adults, we want to think that we can handle almost everything in our lives.

Area resident celebrates his 100th birthday at Heritage Woods in DeKalb 11

By RHONDA GILLESPIE rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Some 360 DeKalb County seniors will have to find a new service provider and 80 employees will be out of a job when Lutheran Social Services of Illinois shutters its office here later this month.

Through its Intouch Home Care program, Lutheran Social Services provides in-home care to seniors in an effort to help the elderly maintain their Independence. According to the agency’s website, those in the program receive help with such things as meal preparation, companionship, housekeeping assistance and nonmedical aid. The program also offers a respite for family members who may be caring for a senior.

LSSI has offices and provides a number of services statewide. This area’s Intouch Home Care office is located at 324 N. Third Street, DeKalb. It will close Feb. 22, according to Austin.

The social service provider blames the closures on a lack of state funding.

Elimination of the program is one of several cuts and reductions LSSI’s chief executive officer announced last month.

In all, LSSI announced it would close 30 programs and give pink slips to more than 750 people.

“LSSI has relied on a bank line of credit and available resources from our foundation to compensate for the state’s inability to pay its bills,” LSSI President and CEO Mark Stutrud said in a written statement. “After seven months, we can no longer provide services for which we aren’t being paid.”

The program closures and service cuts affect individuals getting treatment for drug and alcohol addiction, mental health counseling, aid to former inmates as they re-enter communities, youth services and multiple services to seniors.

ment On Aging. Veronica Vera, a spokeswoman for the state agency, called LSSI a “tremendous” partner and noted the overall impact on social services as a result of the fiscal logjam.

“We understand not having a balanced budget has made things difficult for many of our providers,” said Vera.

“We hope the General Assembly can work with Gov. [Bruce] Rauner to pass much needed reforms and a balanced budget to restore adequate funding and ensure that our most vulnerable continue to receive the care and assistance they need.”

Vera added that the state would work with the seniors affected by the closures in DeKalb and other locations to find new providers of their choice without service disruptions.

The 80 employees who will lose their jobs include supervisors and a host of aides who work directly with the seniors.

The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the NIU Convocation Center, 1525 W. Lincoln Highway. The show features five 10-foottall, 10,000 pound trucks as well as the 35,000-pound, car-crushing dinosaur ‘Transaurus.’ ” “It’s going to be an action packed night,” Emily Boden, marketing manager for the event said. “There will be racing, freestyle, road competitions, a long-jump competition, a donut competition. Bruce Rauner and the state’s comptroller highlighted Illinois’ worsening finances due to the budget deadlock Tuesday as the Republican governor unveiled a plan he said would save money by changing how goods and services are bought.

Rauner is urging lawmakers to pass legislation he said will reduce the time it takes to buy products by eliminating redundant steps in the procurement process. He estimates the state could save $514 million a year that can be used for colleges and human service programs.

Geneva woman accused of poisoning husband

GENEVA – A Geneva woman is accused of fatally poisoning her husband of 31 years last week, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

She is the second city resident in two years to face a first-degree murder charge in the death of a spouse.

Associate Judge Marmarie Kostelny read the charge to Julia L. Gutierrez, 53, during bond court Tuesday morning, less than a week after authorities found her husband dead in their Crissey Avenue home. Gutierrez, who worked for Geneva School District 304 as a bus driver between 1992 and 2004, was being held Tuesday in the Kane County jail in St. Charles Township.

She was expected in court this morning for a continued bond hearing.

According to the release, the Geneva Police Department and the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office allege that Gutierrez mixed Temazepam, a sedative, into a drink and gave it to her husband sometime between Jan. 26 and Jan. 28.

“Eduardo Gutierrez, unaware of the Temazepam, consumed the drink and died as a result,” the release states.

Munger said state spending will outpace last year’s rates by $1.2 billion. Factoring in the $5 billion in revenue lost when the individual income tax rate dropped last year from 5 percent to 3.75 percent brings the deficit to $6.2 billion.

The comptroller’s projection Tuesday was top of the state’s roughly $7 billion backlog in unpaid bills and the worst-funded pension system in the nation with about $111 billion in unfunded liability.

“We are in a cash crunch,” Rauner said, pitching his plan to overhaul the state procurement system. The pending legislation would allow state agencies to have a “pre-qualified pool of vendors” for various supplies and services so officials don’t have to go through the same steps every time goods are purchased.

Rauner also wants Illinois to be able to join a contract that another state has in place in some cases to speed up the process. At the same time, the proposal would create a preference for buying from Illinois businesses.

But with Rauner locked in a bitter budget dispute with Democrats controlling the Legislature, it’s unclear how far his plan will go.

SPRINGFIELD – Anyone under 18 who’s caught with electronic cigarettes or other tobacco-free nicotine products would face a fine or community service under a new Illinois law.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed legislation last week that imposes penalties for minors who possess e-cigarettes.

State Sen. Julie Morrison sponsored the measure. The Deerfield Democrat said it will protect young people “from the dangers of this increasingly popular product.”

Illinois law already prohibits selling e-cigarettes to anyone under 18. Morrison said it makes sense for the state to ban possession as well. The penalties are the same as for possession of tobacco products. The first violation is a $25 fine or 15 hours of community service. The maximum penalty is a $100 fine and 30 hours of community service.

The law takes effect June 1.

Attorney general seeks stay on hospital tax ruling

URBANA – Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office is asking an appeals court to hold back enforcement of its ruling on a part of a state law that lets hospitals avoid taxes.

The 4th District Appellate Court ruled last month that the state’s 2012 charity care law was unconstitutional because it created a tax exemption for hospitals without requiring the properties to be used only for charity purposes, The Champaign News-Gazette reported. The charity care law redefined the terms by which nonprofit hospitals receive property tax exemptions.

Based on the appellate court’s decision, the Champaign County Board of Review voted last week to place the Carle health system and Presence Covenant Medical Center back on the local tax rolls. At the same time, Carle announced plans to appeal the appellate court’s Jan. 5 decision to the state Supreme Court.

Donald Trump’s second-place finish was a humbling blow to the boastful mogul who had dominated the polls for weeks. For Republicans, the pivot to New Hampshire meant the still-crowded cast of candidates has turned toward a less religious and mostly undecided electorate.

Obama, GOP seek common ground

By JOSH LEDERMAN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Can President Barack Obama and Republicans put aside years of ill will to secure a few big breakthroughs in Obama’s final year? Don’t get your hopes up.

There were scant signs of consensus Tuesday as Obama met at the White House with GOP leaders of the House and Senate, hoping to find common ground on trade, drug abuse and criminal justice reform.

While both sides professed a Paul Ryan general interest in working together, the deep ideological gulf between them seemed wider than ever.

House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell appeared content to simply wait this president out, hoping a Republican successor will give the GOP the full deck it needs to press its priorities unimpeded.

“The days of Barack Obama’s presidency are numbered,” Ryan said before the meeting.

Ryan and Obama also had a private lunch,

their first since the congressman became speaker in October with a mandate to unite an unruly cast of House Republicans whose prime point of agreement is that Obama’s agenda must be stopped.

Obama and McConnell have ridden this merry-go-round before, striking big deals occasionally, but more often not.

Illustrating how hard Republicans were still fighting Obama’s agenda seven years in, the House held its umpteenth vote Tuesday evening to repeal his health care law, trying but failing to override Obama’s veto.

Still, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Obama was pleased to host the leaders, calling it a sign that despite heated partisanship in an election year, Democrats and Republicans can have a good-faith conversation about the country’s priorities.

“It’s not treasonous to do that,” Earnest said. “In fact, it’s part of the responsibility that goes along with leadership.”

Ryan, speaking after the weekly GOP caucus, said he hoped he and Obama could “put those disagreements in check and see where the common ground is.”

Obama’s Cuba policy is failing Can an authoritarian regime convert to democracy by itself? The historical record isn’t encouraging. In the absence of a popular uprising, it is rare for tyrants to voluntarily retire.

The military junta of Burma has promised to relinquish some power to an elected government, but it has not yet delivered. China’s party-state shows no inclination to try. Russia’s strongman is reversing what incipient democracy existed.

This goes to the core of why President Barack Obama’s opening to Cuba seems to be failing to live up to its declared goals. When the end to a half-century of hostility was announced in December 2014, the proclaimed U.S. purpose was to “unleash the potential of 11 million Cubans,” to “engage and empower the Cuban people,” and to “empower the nascent Cuban private sector,” among other things.

The administration continued to offer this rationale for its latest moves. New regulations that took effect Jan. 27 from the Commerce and Treasury departments further lifted restrictions on financing of exports to Cuba and relaxed limits on shipping products to the island. Most importantly, the rules will allow banks to finance exports to Cuba on credit, with the exception of agricultural commodities covered by the still-existing trade embargo, rather than requiring cash as before, or burdensome routing through third countries.

Yet there is scant evidence so far of a sea change in Cuba – perhaps because Obama continues to offer the Castro regime unilateral concessions requiring nothing in return. Since the United States has placed no human rights conditions on the opening, the Castro regime continues to systematically engage in arbitrary detention of dissidents and others who speak up for democracy. In fact, detentions have spiked in recent months. The state continues to monopolize radio, television and newspapers.

The administration has defined one of its goals as opening Cuba to the Internet, but the nation still suffers from some of the lowest connectivity rates in the world. The regime established a few dozen WiFi spots but charges people $2 an hour to use them; the average salary is $20 a month. The state retains a chokehold on the economy, including tourism; the benefits of a 50 percent increase in U.S. visitors are being garnered by Raúl Castro’s son-in-law, the industry’s boss. Meanwhile, Cuba’s purchases of U.S. goods have fallen by more than 10 percent.

The hoped-for explosion in individual enterprise has not materialized either. On the contrary: The number of licensed self-employed workers has been dropping. If there are commercial deals as a result of the latest U.S. measures, it is Cuban state organizations that will benefit; only they are allowed to engage in foreign trade.

What’s most evident over the past year is that the Castro brothers are effectively preventing real change and reform even as they reap the rewards of Obama’s opening. The president’s only response has been more unilateral concessions, along with talk of a visit to the island before he leaves office. Autocrats everywhere must be watching with envy the Castros’ good fortune.

Poetic justice for Planned Parenthood “A lie can get halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes.”

That nugget of wisdom dates from the 1800s, i.e., decades before anyone ever heard of the Internet – much less Fox News.

If a lie traveled that fast in the 19th century, you can only imagine its speed in the 21st, when media and the World Wide Web have given it wings. Indeed, in 2016, the lie is so broadly and brazenly told as to cower truth itself and to render impotent and faintly ridiculous the little voice insisting, against all evidence, that facts matter.

It seems increasingly obvious that to many of us, they simply don’t. Not anymore. We find ourselves embarked upon a post-empirical era in which the very idea that facts are knowable and concrete has become quaint. These days, facts are whatever the politics of the moment needs them to be.

We’ve seen this over and over in recent years.

We’ve seen it in the controversy over Barack Obama’s birthplace, in the accusations that Sept.

11 was an inside job, in the charge that weapons of mass destruction were in fact discovered in Iraq, and in the claims that there is no scientific consensus about global warming.

Lunatic assertions that fly in the face of the known are now the norm in American political discourse. So last week’s news out of Houston came as a welcome jolt.

It seems Planned Parenthood was exonerated by a grand jury after an investigation into spurious charges the reproductive health care provider was selling baby parts for profit. Simultaneously, two citizen journalists who orchestrated the hoax – David Daleiden, 27, and Sandra Merritt, 62 – were indicted.

It was a moment of vindication for Planned Parenthood, after months of vilification and investigation. This all sprang from a series of videos secretly recorded by Daleiden’s anti-abortion group, The Center For Medical Progress, during conversations with officials of various Planned Parenthood affiliates.

Released last year, the videos purported to show the officials negotiating the sale of fetal tissue with people they believed to be medical researchers. As

by FactCheck.org later indicated, and a grand jury now affirms, the videos were deceptively edited.

Tissue from aborted fetuses has been used in biomedical research since the 1930s to study everything from polio to Parkinson’s, and while the law prohibits its sale, the patient is allowed to donate it, and Planned Parenthood is allowed to recoup reasonable costs for preparation and transportation to supply it to scientists.

This is what the Planned Parenthood representatives were talking about. This is what the videos were edited to hide.

One is reminded of how, back in 2010, another activist used another deceptively-edited video to suggest that a speech by a black federal employee named Shirley Sherrod was proof of anti-white hatred. It turned out Sherrod’s speech actually made precisely the opposite point; she spoke of the need to overcome such hatred.

That video, like these, suggests that what we’re dealing with here is not citizen journalists, but activist zealots out to advance their agenda and embarrass their opponents by any means necessary, without regard to simple decency or plain old truth.

Increasingly, that is the way of things.

So it’s welcome news that the two CPM hoaxers find themselves facing felony charges for allegedly using falsified driver’s licenses to identify themselves to Planned Parenthood. We are told that that constitutes fraud. In other words, Daleiden and Merritt were ensnared by the trap they set.

Justice seldom gets more poetic.

Yes, lies have always moved faster than truth.

But it feels good to see truth pull even every now and then.

With the old-fashioned company pension now an endangered species, what besides Social Security will support Americans in retirement?

For many, the answer is a 401(k).

The retirement accounts are offered by employers, but workers decide how much money they want to save.

The amount is deducted automatically from their paychecks on a pretax basis, meaning the savings are taxed only when later withdrawn from the account, typically during retirement.

Workers have a say in how the plan administrator invests their sav-

ings, and employers have the option to contribute to their employees’ accounts.

Given these advantages, many Americans swear by their 401(k), but not enough get the chance to have one.

Too often it’s because they work for small companies that can’t afford the accounts’ maintenance costs.

For that reason, President Obama will ask Congress, as part of his 2017 budget proposal, to make it easier for small businesses to provide 401(k) accounts.

The administration believes that

half of the 31 million people who work for an employer with fewer than 50 workers don’t have access to a retirement savings plan.

If lawmakers approve the president’s plan, rules on 401(k)s will be relaxed so that small businesses, even in unrelated industries, will have an easier time forming multiemployer savings plans to bring down costs.

Companies with existing plans will be encouraged to offer them to long-term, part-time workers, in the hopes that they, too, will save for the future.

Not so helpful is the Obama provision to hand out tax credits to employers that add 401(k)s; despite the merits of greater personal savings, the government needs to keep a lid on revenue giveaways.

Last summer a Federal Reserve Board survey revealed a shocking statistic: One-third of American workers have no retirement savings.

Since there’s nothing Democratic or Republican about an empty passbook, lawmakers of both parties need to get behind efforts to help more workers save for themselves.

Near Virginia Tech, a 13-year-old’s online fantasies turn fatal

There are few holes deeper than those in the heart of a 13-year-old girl.

It used to be 13-year-olds would cry into their pillows. Or write in rainbow-covered journals, with rainbow pens. Their pain was private.

Still, most endured, and survived.

But Nicole Madison Lovell found something we all wanted when we were 13: an audience.

There are people out there who listen to sad, lonely girls, tell them they are beautiful and smart. They were right there – in Nicole’s bedroom.

She asked them if she was cute.

She flirted with them. She showed them coquettish pictures of herself.

She was a social-media-savvy tween when she told them all about her first kiss. Her imaginary cloud world wasn’t private. On Facebook, Instagram, Kik, in chats and groups, she wasn’t the kid with the liver-transplant scars, or the baby-fat girl bullied in her seventh-grade classes.

She was a flirting, dating teen with lip gloss and great lines.

And Nicole did not survive.

She left her house at midnight Wednesday, shoving a nightstand against her bedroom door and leav-

ing with a water bottle and a “Minions” blanket. Her body was found in North Carolina, right across the Virginia line.

A Virginia Tech engineering student has been charged with her abduction and killing. We still don’t know what evidence led police to 18-year-old David Eisenhauer, a track star from Columbia, Maryland, who ran for Virginia Tech.

A second arrest Sunday was just as shocking. Natalie Marie Keepers, 19, is accused of helping Eisenhauer get rid of Nicole’s body. She’s an engineering student from Laurel, Maryland, who once interned at NASA. Police told Nicole’s mom, Tammy Weeks, that they think the sweetfaced girl met Eisenhauer online.

The details of that still are unclear, but here’s what we know for sure: Nicole led an active, imaginary

life online, meeting people on Kik, a messaging app that has been the bane of law enforcement officials for the past couple of years.

The app grants users anonymity, it allows searches by age and lets users send photos that aren’t stored on phones.

It’s popular with tweens and teens – and predators. Kik is based in Canada, and law enforcement officials have had a tough time getting the company to cooperate on cases, said Lt. James Bacon, head of the Fairfax County Police Department’s child exploitation unit.

This shadow world may be where Eisenhauer met Nicole, police told her mother.

“It was some off-the-wall site I never heard of,” Weeks said in an interview with The Washington Post.

In the digital age, any parent can be Tammy Weeks. Smartphones have made it easier to keep tabs on our children – and much, much harder.

Teens have been outmaneuvering their mothers and fathers for decades. Back in my day, we told our parents that we were spending the night at Melanie’s house when we were really at the Echo and the Bunnymen show an hour away, Ferris Buellering our way through adolescence.

But a lot of times, our parents won, because they caught us sneaking out. Or they called Melanie’s mom.

This world? The predators aren’t just hiding behind the Galaga machine at the arcade. They’re in our kids’ pockets, in their backpacks, in their bedrooms.

Teddy bears have been popular toys since the first one was created in 1902, but the story about Teddy Roosevelt and the bear cub is now revealed to be a myth. In November 1902, President Teddy Roosevelt went hunting for bears in Mississippi. The others in his hunting party shot some bears, but he had not seen one. So the hunters found an old, sick bear and tied it to a tree for the president to shoot. He declared it was “unsportsman-like” and did not shoot. The story got to the press and a cartoon showed Roosevelt refusing to shoot the old bear. Later cartoons made the bear smaller and cuter. That same year, a candy-shop owner put two of his wife’s handmade bears in the window and was given permission by the president to call them “Teddy’s bears.” In 1903, the Steiff Company of Germany made some toy bears and soon heard about the American Teddy bear, so they sold theirs with that appealing name. Over the years, the bears have changed to a younger look, with short arms and turned-up noses. But the name remains. Today, a collector can find a vintage Teddy with glass or plastic eyes, and brown, white, tan or even red fur of mohair or polyester.

Some are small and hold a perfume bottle, some have eyes that light up and some are more than five feet tall. A lucky bidder bought a 1930s red mohair “electric eye” Teddy bear for $448, even though it was worn and the eyes didn’t work. *** Q: I have a tea set marked “Colclough, Bone China, Made in England.” The name of the pattern, “Amanda,” is also marked on the bottom of the pieces. The set includes six teacups, saucers, small tea plates and bowls and four larger tea plates. Can you give me any information about this?

A: Herbert Joseph Colclough started a pottery under his name in Longton, Staffordshire, in 1897.

It became Colclough China, Ltd.,

in 1937. The company made affordable bone-china tea sets and dinnerware that could be bought by the piece. The company became Booths & Colclough, Ltd., in 1948. It merged with Ridgeway in 1955 and Colclough and Ridgeway became part of the Royal Doulton Group in the early 1970s. Colclough production was discontinued in 1996. A cup and saucer sells for about $10-$20. *** Q: I’m trying to find out the value of a Grain Belt beer sign. It’s metal with porcelain paint and is 5 feet wide and 22 inches tall. There’s a picture of a bottle cap with the words “Grain Belt” on a diamond on top of the bottle cap and the words “The Friendly beer” next to the cap.

I think it’s from the early 1940s.

A: Grain Belt beer was first made by the Minneapolis Brewing Co. in 1893. It was advertised as “The Friendly Beer with the Friendly Flavor” after Prohibition ended in 1933. The company was sold several times. Grain Belt beer is now owned by August Schell Brewing Co. of New Ulm, Minnesota. Beer signs sell at advertising shows and auctions. Large enameled metal signs sell for a few thousand dollars if old, more if the decoration is interesting. *** Q: I’d like to know the value of a framed Audubon print titled “Pinnated Grouse.” It’s marked with a copyright symbol and “By A. Inc. 1937, Drawn from nature by J.J. Audubon F.R.S.F.L.S.” It’s also marked “Engraved, Printed, & Colored by A.P.P. Co., Inc., N.Y.” and “Endorsed by the National Asso-

A: Audubon bird prints originally were issued as part of books from 1826 to 1854 and have been reproduced millions of times since then. The words “After John James Audubon” are on all the prints, including the originals, because they are copies of oil paintings by Audubon. The original bird prints were done by hand and were made in only two sizes, 26 1/2 inches by 39 1/2 inches and 11 inches by 7 inches. Later reproductions were machine made and came in different sizes. Fourteen of the original prints were bought by The Artistic Picture Publishing Co. and reproduced between 1937 and 1943.

Original prints sell for several thousand dollars. Some early reproductions sell for a few hundred dollars, while others sell for about $10. *** Q: While in Europe in about 1975, we bought 24 lead plates. We used the plates for 10 years. What is your opinion of our exposure to

lead?

A: Are you sure your dishes are made of lead? Lead dishes would be heavy. The dishes probably are pewter, which is safe to use. If the dishes are pottery with a lead glaze, there is some risk. Lead can leach out of the glaze if acidic foods are cooked, served, or stored in the dish. Brightly-colored glazes used on some handmade pottery from South America and Asia are more likely to contain lead. In 1971 the Food and Drug Administration set limits on the amount of lead in dishes. Rules were updated in 1993.

Dishes that contain lead have to be labeled “Not for food use.” If you still have the dishes, you can test them. Lead-testing kits are available online and at some hardware stores. A blood test can determine if anyone has lead poisoning. *** Q: Can you tell me something about the furniture maker A. J. Johnson & Sons? We have a china cabinet with a paper label that reads “A.J. Johnson & Sons Furn. Co., Chicago, Ill.” A: A.J. Johnson & Sons Furniture Co. was established in Chicago in 1869. The company made dining and bedroom furniture. Obsession with number of ‘stars’ is ridiculous VIEWS Jesse Severson It’s that time of year.

On Wednesday, schools across the country will celebrate National Signing Day, when incoming recruits can finally sign their letter of intent to play at a certain university in 2016.

For me, it’s more appropriate to call it National Overreaction Day. Fans from around the nation will obsess over the number of stars a players has on scouting websites – fawning over the players with more of them and dreading those who don’t quite have enough.

“He’s only a two-star recruit!” fans will cry out.

“The other school’s got more threestar recruits!” they were complain.

“We need more stars with our recruits!” they will complain.

However, Northern Illinois has made a living off turning two-star or less recruits into highly effective players in the program. Of course, the posterboy of this is Jordan Lynch.

Coming out of Mt. Carmel, Lynch was a two-star recruit by Scout.com, ranked the 137th best quarterback in his class.

After beginning his career buried on the depth chart, he became a Heisman Trophy finalist and a capped a highly decorated two seasons by becoming one of the most popular players in Huskie history.

Lynch is far from an anomaly for the Huskies, too.

Looking at this past season, some of their best players were only two-star guys coming into Northern Illinois.

Offensive linemen Andrew Ness and Aidan Conlon – both first team AllMAC players this season and who each set an NCAA record with 56 consecutive starts in their career – were twostar recruits. Same goes for receiver Tommylee Lewis – an All-American before injuries derailed his career – and linebacker and leading tackler Boomer Mays.

NIU quarterback Drew Hare was a two-star recruit out of Fort Zumwalt West in 2012 before emerging as a talented dual-threat starter. It’s the same story for running back Joel Bouagnon, a two-star guy who eventually rushed for 1,269 yards and 18 touchdowns this past season.

The thing about signing day is, while it might be fun and there’s plenty of pomp and circumstance to go around, there are so many twists and turns and years to wait before you can

Not only do the two-star guys coming in sometimes end up being the best

players on the team – at least at this level – but many times those three-star guys don’t end up panning out. either.

Linebacker Mike Cotton was a three-star guy when he signed with

NIU in 2012 but he didn’t emerge as a Huskie star. Instead, he eventually transferred to Southern Illinois, where he recorded one tackle for a Salukis team that went 3-8 overall last season.

Receiver Blake Holder was a three-star recruit in 2013 and after redshirting his first season at NIU, he transferred to Bemidji State University (Division II), where he had 16 catches for the Beavers this season.

It’s important to remember that DeKalb is not Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

The rest of the towns in the MAC aren’t Baton Rouge, Austin, or Columbus.

More than likely, there won’t be any five-star guys signing with any teams in the MAC. Signing Day is just one piece of the puzzle – although, it is a far less important piece. It’s the years after Signing Day, cultivating the talent and growing them into big-time players, that matters most.

NIU has a track record that they can certainly do that.

GENOA – The Genoa-Kingston girls basketball team didn’t get many second-shot opportunities against Johnsburg.

In fact, there were plenty of times the Cogs had to struggle to even get one shot up as the tough Skyhawks defense clamped down for a 70-26 win Tuesday night in Genoa.

“I thought our half-court offense was worse than our offense against the press,” Genoa-Kingston coach Kyle Henkel said. “We made poor decisions and were stagnant on offense. A lot of standing.”

The full-court press by Johnsburg (22-2 overall, 10-1 in Big Northern Conference) and a tough zone half-court defense dominated the Cogs in the first half, allowing the Skyhawks to push out to a 19-4 lead early.

Junior guard Julie Galauner led the Cogs with 12 points on the night and was the only player for Genoa-Kingston in double figures.

Despite trying to shoot their way back into the game, the Cogs only made two 3-pointers on the night – both from Galauner.

“Tonight, we just couldn’t get a shot to fall,” Henkel said. “We couldn’t take care of the ball and when you let them get multiple shots in the same possession, it’s a recipe for disaster. They killed us on the offensive glass again. Sometimes their best offense was a missed shot.”

It is the second time this season Johnsburg has earned a lopsided win over the Cogs. The Skyhawks won 58-37 earlier in the season at Johnsburg.

“We pressed them last time and we got a good first quarter. It was almost identical – it was like 24-6 the first time we played them,” said Johnsburg coach Brad Frey, whose Skyhawks led 23-6 after the first quarter Tuesday. “Even when our press isn’t great, it gets our tempo going and we get into a running mode. We played four good quarters tonight.”

Genoa-Kingston was outscored 14-2 in the second quarter to trail 37-8 at halftime.

Johnsburg was led by senior post Jazza Johns and sophomore forward Kayla Stefka – both of whom scored 16 points on the night. All eight of Johns’ baskets came around the rim – three coming on put-backs. Junior guard Cortland Sommerfeldt had 14 points for the Skyhawks, who were without leading scorer Aannah Interrante (14.7 points per game).

Not much went right for the Cogs (1310 overall, 8-3 in Big Northern Conference) on the night, as they only scored on a layup by Jesi Nay in the second quarter. By the second quarter, with Johnsburg holding a 23-6 lead, the Skyhawks had called off the press that forced several turnovers by Genoa-Kingston.

With the playoffs in the not too distant future, the Cogs play another tough team on Friday night when they host Burlington Central.

“Playing quality teams is good for us,” Henkel said. “It will tell us what we can do well against them, and if you could probably do that well against anybody. What you don’t do well is probably going to get exposed. Yeah, it’s a loss, but hopefully we can take it as a learning experience heading into the home stretch before regionals.”

Davis, DeKalb dominate No. 8 LaSalle-Peru

DeKalb had Luke Davis, a double-digit win streak of its own and a raucous home crowd.

The Barbs rode a strong game from Davis to a 68-51 win over LaSalle-Peru on Tuesday in a Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover battle between the two firstplace teams in each division.

Davis shot 10 of 12 for the night, including 5 of 6 in the first quarter. He finished with 20 points and six rebounds, his final points of the night an emphatic dunk with 3:21 left to push the lead for the Barbs (20-3 overall, 9-0 conference) to 61-42.

“We thought we could go inside right away, and we did,” DeKalb coach Al Biancalana said of his team’s 14th straight win.

“Luke had a great start to the game. He had a great first half.”

Davis outscored the Cavaliers (17-1, 5-1) by one in the first quarter as DeKalb built a 20-9 lead. The lead was as large as 23 in the third quarter, and the Cavs got no closer than 14 in the fourth.

The Cavaliers had some injury woes in the game – they started without Christian Soderholm, then had two players

hurt in the first quarter. Kobey Fusinetti returned to score nine, the second best output for LaSalle-Peru, but Ryan Atilano never returned.

“Again I thought defensively we played extremely well in the first half,” Biancalana said. “We took away some of the things they wanted to do. Not having Soderholm hurt, because they don’t play a lot of guys anyway.”

Michael Pollack added 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds for DeKalb, which shot 61 percent from the floor in the game. Brady Huebbe led the Cavaliers with 15 points.

Biancalana said the team wasn’t so much focused on making a statement as keeping a perfect home record. They have one home game remaining, Feb. 26 against Yorkville.

“We kind of took it as business as usual,” Biancalana said. “Our preparation was the same. We thought there were a couple things important for us to start the game. No. 1 was to rebound, and I thought we were plus-seven at the end of the first half. They are an extremely good offensive rebounding team and we held them two offensive rebounds in the first half. We really concentrated on a couple of their players that were good scorers and did a good job of making them uncomfortable. And when we do that, we have a good effort.”

Kaneland pulls away from DeKalb girls basketball

By DAILY CHRONICLE sports@daily-chronicle.com The Kaneland girls basketball team has punished many teams with its longrange accuracy this season.

On Tuesday, the Knights did it with the highest percentage shot in basketball – the layup.

The Knights made 13 of them and it was more than enough to defeat DeKalb, 56-32, in Maple Park.

“We’ve been preaching that to the girls because they’re shooting a high percentage inside the 3-point line,” Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said.

“We’re up to about 48 percent from twos which is pretty incredible for girls hoops.”

Camri Conley led that style of attack, scoring a game-high 16 points for Kaneland (19-3, 7-3).

“Colombe talked about trying to get it inside,” she said. “We tried to get in

inside early and it really worked so we kept doing it.”

DeKalb (6-20, 3-9) might have hoped that the halftime break would give it a chance to recharge and return to the offensive form it displayed early, but such never materialized.

The Barbs didn’t have a field goal in the third quarter, which allowed the Knights to break the game open.

Kylie Modaff and Jenni Weber have each had their share of huge games from beyond the 3-point arc this season, but with the ability to attack the basket rather than fire away readily accessible, their jump shots took a rest.

The Knights only made 1 of 10 of their 3-point attempts as Modaff connected late in the second quarter.

“Sometimes the girls settle and fall in the love with the three and they don’t have to do that,” Colombe said.

“The 3-point shots are going to be there throughout the night, but they had trou-

ble guarding, and anytime Camri gets into the lane deep a lot of good things happen.”

Kaneland led 17-14 after one quarter but was struggling defensively.

The Knights turned up the pressure in the second quarter, outscoring the Barbs, 13-6, to take a 30-20 lead at halftime.

“They came out with a hot hand,” Conley said. “We didn’t communicate well at the start but then we started to pick it up and figure out what they were doing.”

League source power struggle with Paxson. Paxson is the favorite son of the Reinsdorfs, and Reinsdorf loyalty to the front office is as close to a lifetime scholarship as there is in all of sports.

So while it’s likely that both Paxson and Forman are safe for now, there’s no doubt that the spotlight of a 26-21 season now has to shine on them.

The question is does Forman step into that light or scurry under the refrigerator? If the last week is any indication it’s the latter.

First-year coach Fred Hoiberg has stood trial on a daily basis, facing the same questions over and over from the media firing squad.

Bulls players haven’t ducked the obvious, doing their best to explain why a team that was labeled a “cham-

pionship roster’’ is now resting comfortably in the area code known as Eastern Conference mediocrity.

Surely the supposed architect of this trainwreck would welcome some accountability. After all, it was Forman who labeled this a “championship roster’’ shortly after the firing of Tom Thibodeau.

That hasn’t been the case.

The GM has a track record of being very good about returning text messages, even if it’s a simple “no comment.’’ Suddenly no longer.

Forman was texted two very simple questions: “Are there concerns that if things don’t finish well this season that the focus from ownership turns on you guys in the front office?’’

Considering Forman was nestled up to Bulls president Michael Reinsdorf in the stands throughout the Utah loss Monday night, maybe the answer was there for all the media to see.

Secondly, Forman was asked, “Have there been any statements made by the Reinsdorfs that this had better work?’’

An important question because

there have been differing sources on both sides. There was early indication that paying $9 million to let Thibodeau go and hire Forman’s hand-picked coach in Hoiberg did put Forman on the hook. However, others have said that the Reinsdorfs would address the roster next in trying to fix the growing dysfunction that is Bulls basketball.

“It’s become very obvious that Thibodeau wasn’t the main problem,’’ a source said.

As a matter of fact, when it came to the Thibodeau-Paxson-Forman dynamic disintegrating the last few years, the source said Thibodeau had more respect for Paxson in the end, despite the two not even speaking with one another.

“Tom knew where he stood with Pax,’’ the source said. “With Gar, he would come into Tom’s office with a smile on his face and a poisoned apple in his hand.’’

So how will the Gar-Pax saga end?

That’s the growing question. If it’s up to Forman, however, he’s doing his best to come out squeaky clean and well fed.

Cobb explains that other HVAC issues, such as rooms or floors that get too hot or too cold, may just need ductwork adjustmens, instead of a completely new HVAC system.

“A good estimate will cover your options, and help you make the choice that’s best for your home’s needs,” Cobb says.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Eventually the two-headed snake of John Paxson and Gar Forman was going to run out of food.

All that would be left to do at that point would be to start devouring each other.

Feeding time may have started.

According to several league sources, general manager Forman has been making it known in basketball circles recently that the Bulls’ slow fall from NBA elite status over the last five years wasn’t his doing.

And while Forman hasn’t been outright pointing the finger in the direction of his VP of basketball operations in Paxson, he has been busy trying to wipe his own fingerprints clean in the blame game.

Panarin not worried about hitting rookie wall ​By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com DENVER – At some point in the next four months, should the Blackhawks be fortunate enough to play that long, Artemi Panarin’s body might start to give out. After all, Tuesday’s game in Colorado was Panarin’s 54th of the regular season — already matching his career-high during his five full seasons in the KHL. From now on, every game he plays is basically uncharted territory. But Panarin thinks it’s just mind over matter.

“I was more tired in the KHL, maybe because this is my first season, and it’s a lot of emotions,” Panarin said through an interpreter.

Those emotions have carried him to a remarkable season so far. Despite having never played in the physical NHL, or on the smaller North American rink, or even in training camp because of an injury, Panarin has been defying conventional wisdom all season for the Hawks. Not only does he lead all rookies in goals, assists, and points, he’s 12th overall in points, and 10th in assists. He’s played a significant role in Patrick Kane’s monster season, and has become one of the most important players in the Hawks lineup.

Every year, rookies hit the proverbial wall. Drained mentally and physically as spring approaches, their play suffers during the most critical part of the season. And any drop-off in Panarin’s play could have a ripple effect across the lineup. But Panarin’s not a typical rookie. He’s 24 years old, and while KHL seasons are shorter than NHL ones, he’s a seasoned professional. And last season, his team in

St. Petersburg won the Gagarin Cup, with Panarin playing 20 of the 22 playoff games before posting five goals and five assists in 10 games for Russia in the World Championships. That adds up to 84 games, which is only 21 shy of the Hawks’ total during their Stanley Cup run last season.

Factor in how much easier travel is in the NHL compared with the far-flung KHL, which features teams spread out over more than 6,000 miles, and it’s easy to see why the Hawks are less concerned with Panarin than, say, a standard 20-year-old rookie.

“I think he’ll be fine,” Patrick Kane said “He’s pretty focused on keeping

his body feeling good and staying in shape for when these games do come along. He’s still a young kid. Even last year, after his season, you saw him in the World Championships, and he was pretty dynamic there, too. He’ll be fine going into the latter half of the season.”

He certainly doesn’t look like he’s having any trouble adapting to the NHL grind. At practices and morning skates, he’s among the peppier players, goofily over-celebrating goals and staying on the ice late to work on his one-timers and stickhandling. And in games, only Jonathan Toews and Kane are averaging more ice time among

Hawks forwards than Panarin’s 18:45.

Panarin even spent some of his AllStar break practicing on his own, preferring to stay on the ice as much as possible.

“It was good for me, just to get ready for the next games,” he said.

Hawks coach Joel Quenneville will keep a wary eye on Panarin, as he does all rookies. But he doesn’t sound worried at all.

“He’s been pretty good so far, and very consistent,” Quenneville said.

“As a team, we’re pretty conscientious of rest, and implementing it at the needed time for certain guys. His play will dictate that.”

HAWKS NOTES

Even as teams get more defensive, 3-on-3 OT remains effective ​By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com DENVER – The NHL’s switch to a 3-on-3 overtime format this season was designed to limit the amount of games decided by a shootout — essentially favoring the lesser of two gimmicks. And it’s worked. Entering Tuesday’s action, 171 games were tied after regulation, and 109 of them (63.7 percent) ended in overtime. Last season, with the 4-on-4 overtime format, only 84 of 186 such games (45.2 percent) ended in overtime.

But the 3-on-3 overtimes are becom-

ing less frantic and, yes, a little less exciting as the season wears on. The wild end-to-end rushes, one scoring chance followed immediately by another at the other end of the rink, are becoming less common. If there’s one thing the NHL has proven over the years, it’s that coaches always find a way to squelch scoring.

“Coaches [and] players,” Joel Quenneville said. “[Players are] keeping the puck a little bit more and being patient with it and without it, getting below the puck and keeping themselves in the play. That was a good sign of it [at the All-Star game] that they can play

With Michal Rozsival day-to-day with a lower-body injury, the Hawks recalled 6-8 defenseman Viktor Svedberg on Tuesday, and put him right to work in Tuesday’s game. Svedberg played 15 games with the Hawks at the start of the season before being sent back to Rockford.

“It’s exciting to come back,” he said.

“You work hard down there to be able to get back.”

No Varlamov

Avalanche goaltender and longtime Hawks nemesis Semyon Varlamov did not start Tuesday, as he continues to deal with the domestic violence civil suit filed against him by his former girlfriend. Varlamov last played on Jan. 23.

“Not much new to add,” Avalanche coach Patrick Roy said. “We’re behind hi, and we’ll see today how it goes.”

No language barrier for Cam on Panthers’ Spanish broadcast The ASSOCIATED PRESS SAN FRANCISCO – Excitement transcends all languages, and Panthers quarterback Cam Newton had a good quip was asked Tuesday about the popularity of the team’s Spanish language radio broadcasters.

“Well I’m trilingual myself,” Newton said.

“I am. I know how to speak Spanish, English obviously, and I speak pretty good Ebonics.”

Newton said the Panthers hear lots of the play-by-play from the team’s Spanish-language broadcasters along with highlight videos before upcoming games. He said it’s kind of weird to hear their calls with the Panthers not really sure what the broadcasters are saying. So they often ask coach Ron Rivera to help translate.

“I know they’re screaming and their tone, and I think that’s the great thing about language as a whole,” Newton said. “You don’t necessarily have to know what they’re talking about to hear their tone and notice that they’re excited about whatever they’re saying.”

EMULATING CAM: Denver has pretty tall backup quarterbacks in Brock Osweiler at 6-foot-8 and Trevor Siemian at 6-3. So they can replicate the challenges the 6-5 Newton presents as the Broncos prepare to play the Carolina Panthers in the Super Bowl, right?

Not quite.

“Of course everyone knows about speed, him being fast, fast strong and tall and all that stuff,” said Broncos linebacker Von Miller, like Newton an All-Pro this season. “His ability to make others play to a level that they would not normally play at is what I think is his greatest attribute.”

Newton’s ability to run, whether powerfully or swiftly, is not something Osweiler nor Siemian truly can emulate in practice. So, Miller said, the Broncos have tried another approach.

“You can’t simulate that speed,” Miller said. “You can the size somewhat, but that’s all. So we figured maybe put a running back back there. Stick anybody who has speed.”

Miller said the coaches have used several running backs and even cornerback Taurean Nixon, all with one thing in mind.

“Speed, speed, speed,” Miller said. “It happens so fast with Cam.” LEVEL PLAYING FIELD: No Super Bowl hitches so far for NFL field director Ed Mangan at Levi’s Stadium.

The turf is ready, the end zones are painted and the grass is being cut daily to three-quarters of an inch.

BYRON WHITE AWARD: Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis is one of the finalists for the NFL Players Association’s Byron “Whizzer” White Award.

The award annually recognizes players who go above and beyond to perform community service in their team cities and hometowns.

Giants running back Rashad Jennings, Lions linebacker Stephen Tulloch, Saints tight end Benjamin Watson and Titans tight end Delanie Walker are the other finalists.

The winner, who will receive $100,000 for his foundation or a charity of his choice, will be announced on Feb. 4 at the NFLPA’s annual Super Bowl news conference.

Super Bowl favorite keeps the crisp, loses the hard work

ome Super Bowl Sunday, we all love a heaping platter of wings. They’ve got to be crunchy. They’ve got to be a little bit greasy. They’ve got to be so delicious we can’t stop eating even after we know we’ve eaten too many.

What we don’t love about the day of the big game? The work involved in making those wings a reality. Because perfectly crisped and seasoned wings typically require a fair amount of effort, not to mention vats of hot oil. And dealing with that is so much less fun than cracking a beer on the couch with your friends.

So we created these hands-off chicken wings that require almost no effort from you. Yet, they are every bit as crispy and addictive as a traditional recipe.

The secret is baking powder. You start the recipe a few hours ahead of when you want to serve the wings. Just toss the wings in a large bowl with some salt, pepper and baking powder, then refrigerate them for a while. The baking powder reacts with the skin, helping to draw out moisture. Less moisture equals more crisp.

When it’s time to cook, you just arrange the wings on a wire rack set over a rimmed baking sheet. The rack keeps the air circulating around the wings and keeps them up and out of any liquid that drips onto the pan. Again, less liquid is key to getting the skin perfectly crisp. When the wings are done, we like to dunk them first in our honey-Sriracha sauce, then in our cilantro-sour cream dip. If you’d prefer the more traditional Buffalo sauce and blue cheese, go for it.

Start to finish: 3½ hours (15 minutes active) Makes 30 wings For the wings: 2 tablespoons baking powder 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 5 pounds chicken wings, split and wing tips removed For the honey-Sriracha sauce: 1/3 cup soy sauce 3 tablespoons Sriracha 3 tablespoons honey 1½ tablespoons minced fresh garlic 1½ tablespoons toasted sesame oil For cilantro-sour cream dip: 3/4 cup sour cream 3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro 3 tablespoons rice vinegar 3 scallions, white and green parts, finely chopped Line 2 baking sheets with foil, then arrange a wire rack over the foil. Coat the rack with cooking

spray.

In a large bowl, stir together the baking powder, salt and black pepper. Add the wings and toss to coat evenly. Spread the chicken wings over the rack and refrigerate for 2 hours, uncovered.

When ready to cook, heat the oven to 375 degrees F. Bake the chicken wings for 60 to 70 minutes, flipping them halfway through, or until very crispy and golden brown.

While the wings bake, prepare the sauces. For each sauce, combine all ingredients in a small bowl and mix until uniform.

Serve the wings on a platter accompanied by the sauces for dunking.

2 tablespoons packed brown sugar 1 teaspoon dried thyme 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon cayenne (depending on desired heat) Kosher salt and ground black pepper 2 pounds medium Russet potatoes (about 4) 2 tablespoons butter, melted 3 avocados, pitted and peeled 2 tablespoons chopped pickled jalapeños

Heat the oven to 450 degrees F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil.

In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, thyme, garlic powder, smoked paprika, cumin, cayenne, 1 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of pepper. Set aside.

Slice 1/2-inch-thick slices off both sides of each potato, reserving the middle third of each potato for another use (put them in water and refrigerate to prevent them from darkening). Using a melon baller, scoop out a bit of the flesh from each potato slice to create shallow bowls.

Arrange the potato slices on the prepared pan. Pat dry with paper towels. Brush all over with the melted butter. Sprinkle with the spice mixture. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the outsides are crisped and browned and the flesh of the potatoes are tender.

While the potatoes bake, prepare the guacamole. In a medium bowl, combine the avocados, jalapeños, scallions, lime juice and vinegar. Mash with a fork or wooden spoon until the guacamole is as chunky or smooth as you prefer. Season with salt and black pepper.

Allow the potatoes to cool slightly, then scoop a spoonful of guacamole into the hollow of each potato. Serve immediately.

Don’t just dip. For serious Super Bowl comfort food, hot dip someone’s house, you’ll need to heat it there, which means you’ll absolutely need to clear this with the host ahead of time. But unless there is not an inch of oven left, your hosts probably will be fairly delighted by the prospect of a hot dip in their home. I know I would be.

In a medium skillet over medium, heat the oil. Add the garlic, stir for 30 seconds, then add the spinach and cook, stirring frequently, until the spinach is cooked and no liquid remains in the pan, about 4 minutes. Remove from the heat

and cool.

Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, combine the cream cheese, Monterey Jack, Parmesan, milk, basil and a hefty pinch each of salt and pepper. Use an electric mixer to beat until well combined, then add the spinach mixture and mix again until fully incorporated. Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan, smoothing the top, then bake for 20 minutes, or until hot and bubbling. Serve hot with bread or crackers.

For this easy Super Bowl snack, we combined two of our favorite game day indulgences – guacamole and roasted potato skins.

We start by creating potato boats, which are dusted with a spicy (you control the heat) seasoning mix, then baked until tender inside and lightly browned outside. Meanwhile, we make a delicious batch of guacamole and – as soon as the potato boats have cooled a bit – spoon heaping mounds of it into them.

Then we eat as many as possible.

Want to dress them up more?

Nothing wrong with sprinkling the tops with grated cheese, cooked bacon, cooked and crumbled sausage, jalapeño pepper slices, chopped onion or whatever else strikes you.

DeKalb County’s brush with particle physics

By BRETT ROWLAND browland@daily-chronicle.com Had things turned out differently, the God particle could have been discovered somewhere under DeKalb County.

In the mid-1980s, Fermilab in Batavia was competing to be the site for what would have been the world’s largest particle accelerator. The National Academy of Science had identified Fermilab as one of six sites for building the Superconducting Super Collider.

The multibillion-dollar project called for building a 100-mile circular tunnel about 200 feet underground, according to early reports.

In January 1984, a DeKalb County official told the Daily Chronicle that in one of the site plans being considered, the accelerator would extend from Fermilab in Batavia west as far as Shabbona, north as far as Route 72 and south as far as Route 34.

In a letter early that year, then DeKalb County Board Chairman Don Lundeen described the project this way: “Construction of what has been referred to as by far the largest and most expensive scientific instruments in history would require land easements and refrigerator buildings every two to three miles along the ring. It would create 300 to 500 permanent jobs, draw 1,000 users from around the world and generate an undetermined number of construction jobs.”

Fermilab’s director at the time, Leon M. Lederman, said there was “fierce competition from lots of states” for “the scientific prize of the century.”

In mid-March, an informational seminar regarding the proposal was announced. About 400 people attended the meeting, held March 26 at the Egyptian Theatre in downtown DeKalb.

At the meeting, Fermilab’s Joseph Lach promised that because the accelerator would be built underground, there “would be no disruption to the surface.”

But many of the questions posed at the meeting weren’t answered, Ray Bockman, then director of the DeKalb County Department of Community Services told the Daily Chronicle.

For example, Lach couldn’t say how long it would take to the build the accelerator or how many jobs it would bring.

“The county wanted to get the word out that (Fermilab representatives) were going to be here and that they would be available to answer the public’s questions,” Bockman told the Daily Chronicle after the meeting. “Judging by the turnout, I’d say it was very successful.”

Bockman, who was the county’s administrator for 28 years before retiring in 2012, told me in a recent interview

“We thought we were on the short list,” he said. “We thought we had a leg up on the economics.”

By the summer of 1984, local groups were taking positions on the project. The DeKalb County Farm Bureau remained neutral.

“We would hate to come out in support of something that could be very detrimental to the farm community,” Brad Burzynski, the bureau’s governmental affairs director at the time, told the Chronicle. “But we’d also hate to come out in opposition to anything that could have some very good economic benefits for DeKalb County.”

Burzynski, who went on to represent the 35th district in the state Senate from 1993 to 2011, said farmers had real concerns about the project, including the above-ground refrigeration units and access shafts that would be constructed around the ring.

Proponents of the project said the accelerator was needed to keep the United States at the forefront research in particle physics. They also touted big benefits for Illinois, Fermilab and Northern Illinois University.

Lederman said the collider would be a major draw for researchers from around the world and hinted that it could put NIU in a strong position.

“Northern is the closest university to the proposed accelerator,” he said, “and we have, ‘Such a short time to convert NIU into a Harvard,’ “ The Daily Chronicle reported after a talk Lederman gave in March 1985 to about 80 people in the Holmes Student Center Regency Room.

By October 1985, officials were less sure the collider would reach DeKalb County.

The size of the underground ring was pegged at 50 miles and the Chronicle reported it wouldn’t reach here. Even so, the DeKalb County Board’s Planning and Zoning Committee passed a

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said, “Daring ideas are like chessmen moved forward. They may be beaten, but they may start a winning game.”

Sometimes at the bridge table, if you want to have a winning game, you have to make daring bids and plays.

The North-South spade suit, contract and opening lead are the same as the last two days, but there the similarities end. How should South try to make three no-trump after West leads the spade five?

West opened with a weak two-bid, showing a decent six-card suit and some 5-10 points. Over North’s takeout double, South would have preferred a stronger spade holding for his threeno-trump bid, but with such a flat hand, he did not expect that five of a minor would make.

South has eight top tricks: one spade (because of the lead), four hearts and three clubs. He must play on diamonds for the extra winner. But that means losing the lead twice, and the opponents are threatening to win too many tricks.

On the previous two days, it was right for declarer immediately to put up dummy’s spade queen. Then his follow-up play was determined by what happened at that trick.

Here, though, suppose South does that. If he wins the trick and plays a diamond, East takes the trick and returns his second spade. West runs the suit for down two. Or, if East takes the queen with the ace and leads back his second spade, West will surely have a high diamond as an entry card.

The secret is to play low from the dummy and low from hand too. South will succeed whenever the contract is makable.

There are other options, too. See if colleagues will agree to a true “standing meeting.” Get up and walk to your co-worker’s office rather than relying heavily on email.

Here are a few other suggestions to incorporate throughout your day: • Set an alarm to go off every 30 to 60 minutes during the day. When it rings, get up and walk around. I use this trick myself.

• Pace during phone calls. Stand up and walk around when you’re on the phone. I use this one, too.

• Make TV time less sedentary. Watch TV standing up instead of sitting down. If you’re really motivated, march in place or swing your arms. I’m considering this one.

I spend a lot of time sitting at my computer, writing this column (and other things). Roughly every half-hour, I get up, walk around, walk up and down one flight of stairs and wave my arms around. I’m convinced it makes me less stiff.

Also, several studies have shown constant fidgeting can burn off close to 300 calories a day, which helps control your weight. By fidgeting, I refer to things such as pacing the floor or just constantly shifting your weight or wiggling around in your chair.

We’re not talking about training for a triathlon here – just some simple changes that won’t even cause you to break a sweat.

Dear Reader: Research suggests the more we sit, the more we’re likely to develop heart disease and other illnesses, including diabetes and cancer. Whether it’s sitting at the computer to get some work done or on the couch watching TV, too many hours spent on our bottoms increases the risk of dying from any cause – even if you exercise regularly.

Think of it this way: Say you sleep for eight hours. That leaves 16 hours in your day. Even the most physically active among us, who exercise one or even two hours a day, still have 14 hours to fill. That’s a lot of time.

A study recently published in the European Heart Journal suggests spending more of that time standing, as opposed to sitting, can have a big impact on your health. For the study, researchers monitored the activity levels of roughly 700 adults to determine how much time they spent sitting, standing, walking slowly and walking at a moderate to vigorous pace.

Every two hours a day spent sitting was associated with an increase in weight and waist size, as well as in levels of blood sugar and cholesterol.

As you might expect, time spent walking rather than sitting not only lowered cholesterol and blood sugar levels, but also reduced waist size and weight. Perhaps more surprisingly, simply substituting two hours of standing for sitting also improved blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

You must serve upon Petitioner and file with the Court a written Answer to the Petition for Dissolution of Marriage and your Financial affidavit. You must pay the required filing fee. NOTICE OF TEMPORARY RESTRAINING PROVISIONS Under Minnesota law, service of this summons makes the following requirements apply to both parties to the action, unless they are modified by the court or the proceeding is dismissed: Neither party may dispose of any assets except (a) for the necessities of life or for the necessary generation of income or preservation of assets, (b) by an agreement of the parties in writing, or © for retaining counsel to carry on or to contest this proceeding.

Neither party may harass the other party. All currently available insurance coverage must be maintaines abd continued without change in coverage or beneficiary designation. Parties to a marriage dissolution proceeding are encouraged to attempt alternative dispute resolution pursuant to Minnesota law. Alternative dispute resolution includes mediation, arbitration and other processes as set forth in the district court rules. You may contact the court administrator about resources in your area, If you cannot pay for mediation or alternative dispute resolution, in some counties, assistance may be available to you through a nonprofit provider or a court program. BID FORM: Bids shall be submitted in duplicate on forms issued by Architect.

BID SECURITY: Bids shall be accompanied by a Bid Security of at least 10% of the total amount of the base bid and all additive alternate bids.

This may be in the form of a certified check, cashier's check, bank draft or bid bond, payable to the Owner as a guarantee that should the bidder be awarded the Work, the bidder will enter into a contract with the Owner and will furnish the proper performance and payment bond within the time limit set by the Owner. Bid securities will be returned to all other bidders when the successful bidder files a proper performance and payment bond and the contract is executed by the Owner. If the successful bidder fails to file such contract and performance and payment bond, the amount of his bid security shall be forfeited to the Owner as liquidated damages.

WAGE RULES: Each craft, type of worker and mechanic needed to execute the Contract shall be paid the prevailing wage rate for the locality in which the work is performed, in accordance with all federal laws and laws of the State as well as local ordinances and regulations applicable to the work hereunder and having force of law.

PERFORMANCE BOND: A performance and payment bond for the full amount of the Contract will be required of the successful bidder. All costs associated with the bond shall be included in the bid amount.
