The start of a new academic year is always filled with wonderful, new opportunities to connect, learn and grow with one another. Whether you’re a longstanding Huskie or new to our family, I’m delighted to be with you as we help our students and community advance and have their dreams realized. We have much to look forward to this fall. In particular, here are just a few ways we’re enhancing the NIU experience: • NIU is partnering with Braven, a national nonprofit organization, to offer a new program for students aimed at empowering them with the skills, networks, experiences and confidence to land strong internships, jobs or entrance into graduate schools. • Our plans for the Northern Illinois Center for Community Sustainability will take a major step forward as we will identify an architecture and design firm partner to help us create a research and innovation hub on our west campus. • This year, we’ll host one of our most memorable Homecoming Weeks yet as we celebrate our 115th anniversary of this beloved tradition. Planning has been underway for months to offer new events and activities that remind us all why coming home to NIU is a joyous occasion. I’m also particularly excited to be part of the continuing work with the city of DeKalb on our Belonging initiative partnership. A community is only strong and vibrant if its members can see themselves in it and feel welcome. This meaningful work is inspiring new collaborations and relationships, sharing important stories through exhibits such as Voices of Belonging and strengthening the reasons why people want to live, learn and work here. I’m very proud of NIU and our amazing students, staff and faculty who pursue and share knowledge for society’s benefit. Throughout this year, I encourage you to join us on campus for events and activities to see the breadth and depth of their artistry, expertise and athleticism. Together we will make this academic year one of our very best.

Welcome, Huskies! I want to personally welcome every NIU student to DeKalb for the new school year and tell you on behalf of DeKalb how excited we are to have you here. As a lifelong DeKalb resident and proud NIU alumnus, I can’t wait for you to see some of the cool things that have happened over the summer to make DeKalb even more attractive. When you come downtown, you’ll find we narrowed the road and widened the sidewalks to make it more pedestrian friendly to navigate and to allow for more outdoor dining and other activities. I encourage you to come downtown to shop, eat and enjoy a show at the historic Egyptian Theatre. NIU and the city have also worked on fun things like the start of our Huskie Pride street sign program where street signs will feature our favorite Huskie. We are also working together to implement murals and other public art around the community. And I am really excited about how, together, we’re going to have some pretty incredible homecoming activities this year. This is Huskie country, and it is your town, so come out and explore DeKalb. You’ll find an incredible variety of restaurants providing food from cultures around the globe. You’ll discover unique cultural experiences when attending places like the historic Egyptian Theatre and our Stage Coach Player’s Theatre. You’ll have access to all the major brands for your day-to-day needs, and you’ll be able to attend local festivals like DeKalb Corn Fest and Music at the Mansion. I encourage you to spend some time to get to know us. You’ll find a community that welcomes new ideas, embraces innovation and people who are working hard to co-create an environment where everyone feels that they belong. We’re not perfect, but we’re committed to growing and expanding our understanding and compassion of each other. That’s why we value co-creation. It will take all of us, working together, to continue to improve DeKalb and this great nation of ours. Forward, together forward.

DeKalb and NIU have engaged in meaningful efforts to create a culture of belonging on our campus and in our community. This has been an authentic partnership that got underway in January 2020. Our belonging efforts started with honest community conversations that recognized the realities of othering and the importance of belonging right here in DeKalb and at NIU. Nearly 500 students, staff and residents participated in the conversations last year. Since then, we hit the ground running with several impactful efforts. In recent years, we formalized a Belonging Council that is committed to creating a community where you feel seen, valued and part of our family. Our belonging efforts also include addressing meaningful policy changes, inclusion in decision-making and assuring equity in access. We’re planning and supporting events that bring us together and help us get to know one another. And we’ve also created art exhibits that celebrate our diversity and acknowledge painful realities of othering. Find out about these exhibits at cityofdekalb.com/belonging. We want you to be part of our belonging efforts and know that your voice matters. This fall, DeKalb and NIU partners will host Voices of Belonging pop-up events on campus and in the community. n VENDORS: Come see over 90 vendors on Lincoln Highway from First to Fourth Streets from 3-11 p.m. n CARNIVAL: Open 3-11 p.m. Weekend wristbands (good for all three days) $60. Friday has unlimited rides from 3-7 p.m. for $32. n COMMUNITY STAGE: 5-8:45 p.m. inside the Egyptian Theatre. Come watch acts of all ages for free. n SOUNDSTAGE: Open from 5:30-11 p.m. $10 admission to main area or view for free at Locust and Second Street.

CORN FEST is one of the last free admission festivals in Illinois. We are celebrating our 45th year of our community tradition. You can browse vendors, watch community acts for free at the Egyptian Theatre or bands for free on Locust Street. If you wish to be in the middle of the action and in front of the stage, there is a $10 admission. On Saturday, come enjoy free corn at our corn boil. There is plenty to do and a great way to see all DeKalb has to offer!
