WASHINGTON – Millions of taxpayers face a midnight deadline Monday to file their tax returns, while millions of others will ask for more time – a six-month extension. There was a threeday delay beyond the traditional April 15 deadline because Friday was a legal holiday in the District of Columbia.

Some things to know about taxes:

Thank you, Emancipation Day

The traditional April 15 filing deadline was extended because of Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the nation’s capital. The holiday commemorates President Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act in 1862. The act freed more than 3,000 enslaved people in the district and compensated their owners.

The Friday holiday moves the tax deadline to the next business day. In Massachusetts and Maine, taxpayers get one more day to file. The deadline there is Tuesday because Monday is a legal holiday, Patriots’ Day, in both states. The holiday commemorates the first battles of the Revolutionary War in 1775.When the federal deadline is moved back, state and local deadlines also move back to match it.

150 million tax returns

The IRS expects millions of tax returns to be filed each day as the tax deadline approaches, with more than 5 million returns possible on Monday. More than 150 million tax returns are expected to be filed this year. As of April 8, almost 82 million refunds have been issued, the IRS said. The average refund amount was $2,798.

For those who need more time to finish their returns, tax-filing extensions are available. The IRS reminds taxpayers extensions grant more time to file returns, but do not extend time to pay. The IRS projects it will receive 13.5 million requests for extensions.

Congress targets IRS

The IRS is a favorite target of lawmakers from both parties who complain about the complexity of the tax code and accompanying regulations that span more than 70,000 pages. Instructions to complete IRS Form 1040 – the main individual income-tax return – run more than 100 pages.

Impeach IRS commissioner?

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has moved to impeach IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, but a full vote has not been taken in the House.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., stopped short of backing impeachment. The IRS “is an agency that needs to be cleaned up,” Ryan said at a news conference last week. But instead of impeachment, Republicans need to win the presidential election to “get better people in these agencies and reform the tax code so we’re not harassing the average taxpayer with a tax code that they can’t even understand,” Ryan said.

Cybersecurity

Ryan and other Republicans also criticize the IRS for failing to secure sensitive taxpayer data. They cite an inspector general’s report that identifies “significant security weaknesses that could affect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of financial and sensitive taxpayer data.”

Even so, the problem is growing. What used to be limited to individuals filing a few dozen or a few hundred false tax returns now is often the work of organized crime syndicates in the U.S. and other countries, Koskinen said. The agency has “a delicate balance” to maintain, he said: “We need to keep the criminals out, while letting legitimate taxpayers in.”

More than 900 turn out for 10th annual NIU Cares Day

news@daily-chronicle.com More than 30 Northern Illinois University students descended upon the 99-year-old building owned by the DeKalb Area Women’s Center on Saturday to give it what Anna Marie Coveny called a spring cleaning.

People were turned away this year after more than 900 signed up to volunteer during the 10th annual NIU Cares Day, an event in which NIU students, faculty and staff help DeKalb nonprofits and community agencies complete projects, including planting, painting and cleaning, among other tasks.

The DeKalb Area Women’s Center was one of 39 organizations that were served Saturday.

“Oftentimes students are so intensely occupied on campus, they don’t get to come out and find out what DeKalb is really like and the amazing people who live here,” said NIU President Doug Baker, who helped pull weeds from the century-old building’s front yard. “So I think that’s a great opportunity for them, and also for DeKalb to get to know them.”

Chores for the DeKalb Area Women’s Center included removing winter debris from the lawn, clearing tarps off of the building’s massive windows and reorganizing the inside to make way for prospective historic restoration crews.

Coveny, who is a board member and gallery director for the center, said her aim is to have the building restored to its original likeness with few contemporary additions.

“You make decisions so that it restores the building to what it was when it was built, if possible,” Coveny said. “If possible, because we have to modernize the heating system, we have to modernize the electric, we have to modernize the plumbing.”

The purpose of the building when it was built in 1917 by the Temperance Society was to serve as a center for the local Finnish community, Coveny said.

NIU Cares Day was a step toward restoration, which Coveny said is halfway done after 20 years of the DeKalb Area Women’s Center having owned the building.

Sycamore History Museum’s new exhibit Community members are featured in ‘Faces of Sycamore’ piece

SYCAMORE – Lynden Bute of Sycamore has many titles: artist, painter, snow sculptor and wood carver. He also can add to the list: a living, breathing museum piece.

Bute is one of the more than 50 people featured as part of the Sycamore History Museum’s new exhibit, “Faces of Sycamore: Our Community, Our Story.”

“Every artist likes to be known and appreciated for what they do,” Bute said. “People in the area probably don’t know I exist, and they might not know any of these other people. The exhibit allows us to tell our story and to put who you are and what you do out there.”

The exhibit’s grand opening was Saturday, and it will run for a year.

The museum, located at 1730 N. Main St. in Sycamore, is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and by appointment. Admission is free for members and children under age 10, and $5 for adult nonmembers.

The exhibit uses photos, artifacts and short biographies of people in Sycamore who have made a difference in their community.

“In our exhibit, we include a quote from Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy, and he describes generosity as contagious,” said Michelle Donahoe, the museum’s executive director. “The exhibit tells different stories of people in the community and how they generously helped Sycamore. It was hard to decide who to include.”

Each room of the museum houses a different theme: arts and entertainment; construction and preservation; athletes; medical first responders and military; and agriculture. The last room, “Friends of Sycamore,” gives examples and a brief description of local nonprofit and charitable organizations in DeKalb County.

“The last room gives examples of how you can make a difference in Sycamore,” Donahoe said. “In the room, you have the opportunity to write thank you notes to let others know how thankful you are for what they do.”

The exhibit also features a portrait painting and a clay model of Sycamore teacher Cora B. Miner, created by Bute.

Miner taught for 45 years in Sycamore School District 427 and for 20 years out of her home after retiring. Bute hopes to later carve a statue of Miner out of a tree on the museum’s property.

Diane Rodgers of DeKalb visited the Sycamore History Museum for the first time to see the new exhibit.

“I loved the exhibit, and what I liked most about it is that it’s people you don’t expect to see in a museum,” Rodgers said. “The exhibit is a great idea. It showcases the behindthe-scenes people, letting everybody learn more about them and their lives.”

OBITUARIES HAROLD V. PHILLIPS

Born: Feb. 1, 1927; in Black Rock, AR Died: April 15, 2016; in Genoa, IL Harold V. Phillips, 89, of Genoa died Friday, April 15, 2016, at his home.

He was born Feb. 1, 1927, in Black Rock, AR., the son of Jesse and Leona (Miller) Phillips. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Maudine Johnson Oct. 6, 1951, in Walnut Ridge, AR. Harold was a member of the VFW. He work for Automatic Electric for several years and also did TV repair.

He is survived his wife, Maudine of Genoa; special niece and nephew, Annette (Gene) Irving of Sycamore, Phillip Pulliam of Maple Park; sisters, Inez Wilton, Almeda (Bill “Corky”) Kerwin, Barbara (Arble) Bates, Judith (Octavius) Smith; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brother, Glen Phillips; sisters, Coleda (Martin) Woodson, Lila Lee Phillips.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Ltd., Cooper-Quiram Chapel, 202 E. Main Street, Genoa, IL 60135, with Pastor James Freund, officiating. Burial will be in Genoa Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral chapel.

There are ways to effectively communicate with a person who suffers from hearing loss, however, that can make both of your lives much easier.

First, get their attention and tell them what topic you will talk to them about. This makes it easier for the hearing impaired person to comprehend what you are saying, according to AgingCare.com.

Try to make sure you are in good lighting so the hearing-impaired person can see your face while you speak. Eliminating background noise also helps. Turn off the radio or television. If you are in a crowded venue such as a restaurant, find a quiet place to sit away from the crowd. Having all people involved in the conversation take turns speaking also makes it easier for the hearing impaired person to understand what SM-CL0301898

When speaking, face the person and enunciate your words, speaking clearly with your mouth visible, and do not talk with your mouth full, says Aging Care. Libyan smuggling route grows 1 year after mass drownings

When more than 800 people drowned last year on an overcrowded ship bound for Italy’s southernmost isle of Lampedusa, the European Union deployed a round-the-clock flotilla that has saved thousands of lives on what remains one of the world’s most perilous journeys.

But one year after Europe’s deadliest migrant disaster, humanitarian and security efforts off the lawless coast of Libya face a growing challenge to catch smugglers and bring asylum-seekers to safety.

So far this year, 24,000 migrants have arrived in Italy via this route, and tens of thousands more are waiting in the pipeline, according to the International Organization for Migration.

Rescue officials seek to ensure no repeat of the night of April 18, 2015, when a boat packed with an estimated 850 mostly African passengers capsized as a civilian freighter approached. Most were locked below decks; only 28 survived. Several other smuggling vessels sank in the first months of 2015, some without a trace at a cost of untold lives, before EU naval reinforcements arrived that June to cast a safety net.

Most of those 24,000 migrants were scooped up by Italian coast guard and EU vessels from recklessly overloaded vessels that were left drifting, engines dead, between Libya and Italy in a body of water dubbed the Lampedusa Triangle. Even if their amateur pilots had the requisite navigation skills, few vessels carry enough fuel to complete the estimated 185-mile crossing to Lampedusa from Libya.

Frederico Soda, director of the IOM’s office in Rome, said about 350 people have died so far this year trying to cross the southern Mediterranean

route, nearly as many deaths over the same period as the far busier smuggling routes between Turkey and the eastern islands of Greece.

Now, as EU authorities work to halt that eastern Mediterranean flow of migrants and deport them from Greece back to Turkey, analysts anticipate that asylum-seekers from the Mideast and Asia may see Libya once again as the most temptingly open gateway to Europe.

They note that Libya’s paramilitary chaos may make the North African nation a particularly attractive launch-

ing point for Europe-bound migrants because EU authorities won’t deport migrants back to such a danger zone.

Virtually all of this year’s arrivals from Libya have been Africans – but observers say that could be about to change.

EU nations are maintaining a fleet anchored primarily in Lampedusa that operates under the code name Operation Sophia. It includes Italy’s largest warship, the aircraft carrier Cavour, and is commanded by an Italian rear admiral, Enrico Credendino.

The fleet’s official mission is to confront smugglers and deter illegal immigration to Italy, but in practice the effort has become one of the 28-nation bloc’s biggest rescue missions in its history.

On Sunday, these two operations rescued more than 2,000 people from eight boats that had been spotted by a Luxembourg-provided surveillance plane.

A Norwegian vessel took 898 migrants to Sicily, including 224 children, while a German ship delivered 738 others to Lampedusa. Doctors on board the Cavour performed a life-saving abdominal operation on an African man airlifted onto the carrier.

The U.N. Security Council in October empowered the EU fleet to begin arresting smugglers and seizing their craft in international waters north of Libya.

Rauner, Madigan hamstring budget talks

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – The rivalry between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan continues to intensify during Illinois’ 10-month budget stalemate, leaving little hope that the state will have a spending plan any time soon.

Neither man has budged from their respective positions in a battle of attrition that has left Illinois as the only state in the country without a budget for the fiscal year that began July 1.

Rauner, a wealthy venture capitalist and first-time officeholder, promised voters he would shake up state government and wants a series of reforms aimed at curbing the power of unions and reducing costs for businesses.

Madigan, the face of the state Legislature since the 1980s, has maintained solid Democratic majorities by keeping his party’s allies happy, and that includes unions. He said Rauner’s ideas are destructive for the working class.

Tuesday marked the first time they were in the same room since December for negotiations, but the same day they publically maligned the other’s position. Rauner spoke to a group of busi-

Illinois comptroller: Pay for officeholders to be delayed

CHICAGO – Lawmakers from the governor on down will start waiting for their paychecks like others whose payments from the state have been delayed because of the prolonged budget impasse, Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger said Sunday.

At a news conference, Munger said it isn’t fair that members of the General Assembly and other statewide office holders – herself included – be paid on time each month when agencies, vendors and others are having to wait months for money they’re owed or are having to slash programs or shut down because of the lack of funding.

“It is only appropriate that we all wait in line to receive payment,” she said.

Munger said that although the roughly

1959 time capsule found at ex-Illinois State dorm

NORMAL – A time capsule from 1959 has been found at a former Illinois State University residence hall that’s being taken down.

The box found at Hamilton-Whitten by a demolition foreman had roughly 50 items with ties to other former dorms, The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reported.

They include a 1959 yearbook, copies of revenue bonds used to finance Hamilton-Whitten’s construction, and an imitation cardinal. The copper box’s contents are “priceless in university history,” said university archivist April Anderson.

PEDERNALES, Ecuador – Aid began to flow Sunday to areas devastated by Ecuador’s strongest earthquake in decades and the death toll continued to rise as people left homeless hunkered down for another night outside in the dark. Officials said the quake killed at least 246 people and injured more than 2,500 along Ecuador’s coast. Vice President Jorge Glas said the toll was likely to rise because a large number of people remained unaccounted for, although he declined to say how many.

Much of the damage was reported in the cities of Manta, Portoviejo and Guayaquil, which are all several hundred miles from the epicenter of the quake that struck shortly after nightfall Saturday. But the loss of life seemed to be far worse in isolated, smaller towns close to the center of the earthquake.

In Pedernales, a town of 40,000 near the epicenter, soldiers put up a field hospital in a stadium where hundreds of people prepared to sleep outside for a second straight night. Downed power cables snaked across the streets with no prospect of electricity being restored soon, making it unsafe for many to return to their homes.

The town’s mayor said looting broke out Saturday night amid the chaos, but with the arrival of 14,000 police and soldiers to towns in the quake zone the situation appeared more under

control.

President Rafael Correa, who cut short a trip to Rome to oversee relief efforts, declared a national emergency and urged Ecuadoreans to stay strong.

“Everything can be rebuilt, but what can’t be rebuilt are human lives, and that’s the most painful,” he said in a telephone call to state TV before departing for Manta, where he arrived just before nightfall to be briefed by aides.

More than 3,000 packages of food and nearly 8,000 sleeping kits were being delivered Sunday. Ecuador’s ally, Venezuela, and neighboring Colombia, where the quake was also felt, organized airlifts of humanitarian aid. The European Union, Spain, Peru and Mexico also pledged aid.

Nuclear-free agenda needs to get a jolt What Secretary of State John Kerry called his “gut wrenching” visit to the Hiroshima war memorial April 11 served several purposes.

As the highest-ranking official in an American administration ever to visit the site, he paid respects to the victims of one of the most devastating acts of World War II and reflected on how Japan and the U.S. have forged a strong alliance over the past 70 years.

He also emphasized that “war must never be the first resort” and urged a continued push for a world free from nuclear weapons.

For years, top American officials did not visit the memorial because of sensitivities over the nuclear attacks by the U.S. on Hiroshima and Nagasaki that killed 200,000 people – mostly civilians.

Now that Kerry has paved the way, there should be nothing keeping President Barack Obama from becoming the first American president to stop at Hiroshima when he travels to Japan next month for a meeting of the Group of 7 leaders.

He has achieved some important measures, most notably the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which has significantly curbed Iran’s ability to develop a nuclear weapon, and the 2010 New Start treaty mandating cuts in the number of strategic nuclear warheads deployed by the U.S. and Russia to 1,550 warheads each.

The Republican-led Senate has refused to consider ratifying the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. And Pakistan has blocked international negotiations on a treaty banning fissile material production.

His support for a $1 trillion program to replace America’s aging nuclear weapons severely undercuts his lofty words about a “world without nuclear weapons.”

Obama still has time to promote his antinuclear legacy with small but doable advances. He should cancel the new air-launched, nuclear-armed cruise missile.

He should work to persuade the United Nations Security Council to endorse the nuclear test moratorium that all countries but North Korea observe, even though the test ban treaty has never formally taken effect, and push to have the United Nations organization that monitors testing be made permanent.

If Obama does visit Hiroshima, he needs to make it count.

While criminal justice activists are properly enraged over the mass incarceration of black men, I hope for a movement that also is furious at the senseless violence that claims the lives of so many black men. Homicide remains the leading cause of death for black men between the ages of 15 and 34. Why doesn’t that deserve protests, marches and demonstrations?

Yes, we ought to remember the names Eric Garner, Walter Scott and John Crawford III, all unarmed black men killed by police. And we also ought to remember the names Barney Simms, Will Smith and Tyshawn Lee, a 9-yearold black Chicago boy who was targeted for execution in gangland retribution for his father’s sins.

The awful reality of black-on-black violence is disconcerting, difficult to dissect and discuss – particularly in

an era when activists highlight police brutality and mass incarceration. There has been a cognitive dissonance, as if we don’t have the political and intellectual bandwidth to comprehend intertwined evils: crime in black neighborhoods and racism in the criminal justice system.

Take the current carping over the 1994 crime bill, which was a centerpiece of President Bill Clinton’s first term.

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and her husband have been chastised by black activists over the legislation, which critics say propelled the dramatic rise in black incarceration rates.

If we claim that the crime bill was merely a racist reaction to the problems of poverty and drug addiction in black neighborhoods, we do a grave injustice to the black victims of a wave of violence that gripped the nation in the 1980s and ’90s. Drug wars ripped apart urban neighborhoods, Jesse Jackson spoke of his fear of black crime, and politicians peddled longer and longer prison sentences.

The crime bill, which funded a spate of state prison-building, no doubt had unintended consequences.

(Criminologists say, however, that it had only a modest effect on incarceration rates.) But it dispensed funds for

social programs, reined in violence against women and instituted the nation’s last major gun control law – a now-rescinded ban on assault weapons. Let’s not suggest that those latter programs were without merit.

Of course, we won’t overlook the bigotry that’s a continuing hallmark of the criminal justice system. In a newly released report commissioned

by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the city’s police department is described as rife with racism. Black citizens accounted for a stunning 74 percent of the people shot by Chicago police between 2008 and 2015.

Surely, we can hold on to both of these grim truths: Racist cops prey on black communities, and black criminals prey on black communities.

News reports about Simms’ death note a final irony: He served as chairman of Atlanta Victim Assistance, an organization founded by a black mom whose teenage son was killed by another black teen. Simms believed that all black lives matter.

Threats directed at a delegate who decided to not back Trump

The Washington Post At the conclusion of a long interview with Politico last week, I was asked whether or not I support Donald Trump. I said I did not.

I was then asked if there was any situation where I could see myself supporting Trump.

“If Satan was one vote away from the nomination,” I replied, “I would consider voting for Trump if he was the only alternative.” As a result of that remark, Trump supporters have tried to make my life a living [heck].

I’ve received hate email to my business and political accounts. People have left hateful messages on my home and office phones. This is totally unprecedented in my decade as a political party chairman.

Here’s the truth: I may well vote for Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention. Indiana’s rules require that district delegates, of which I am one, vote on the first ballot for the candidate who won the congressional district they represent. If Trump wins Indiana’s 4th Congressional District on May 3, I will cast my first ballot vote for him.

However, if Trump does not win a majority, and we need a second ballot to choose our nominee, Indiana rules unbind the delegates and allow them to vote their consciences. In that case, I’ll support John Kasich.

This is what inflamed the Trump supporters and motivated them to launch their vicious verbal assaults on myself and others who were quoted in the Politico story.

Many Trump supporters have swallowed the stump speech swill that the Republican “establishment” is trying to steal the nomination.

Trump and his pundits would have you believe that every delegate who supports Kasich or Cruz is a fat cat millionaire lobbyist or businessperson who’ll personally prosper only by maintaining the status quo.

What many of these supporters don’t realize is that the delegate selection process for the 2016 presidential election began four years ago in a very democratic way.

For me, the process started when the registered Republicans in my county elected precinct committeemen and vice-committeemen in May 2012. Those elected party officials then conducted an election for coun-

ty officers in March 2013. At that time, I was elected county chairman.

A week later, the county chairs and vice chairs in the 16 counties that make up Indiana’s 4th Congressional District elected me as district chairman.

Earlier this year, we solicited interest for positions as delegates to the Republican National Convention. Candidates were required to submit a notarized application to me by March 15. The district officers then prepared a slate of candidates for a straight up or down vote to be presented at a district meeting in April.

In my district, only two people applied by the deadline. Since we need three delegates, they automatically became our representatives for the convention. I will go as well.

As this shows, the Republican establishment is not top-down. It’s an amazing grassroots organization that begins and ends with the great loyal Republicans who stuff envelopes, walk neighborhoods, work phone banks, attend Lincoln/Reagan Dinners, vote consistently, and contribute to the election of council people, commissioners, auditors, sheriffs and legislators.

They receive no compensation for their efforts on behalf of the Republican Party. They are the true strength of our party and a vital element in the process of selecting national convention delegates.

As a lifelong Republican who attended his first state convention in 1972 at age 18, who has worked to help elect Republicans to every level of government for more than 40 years, who has written two books dedicated to the brave sacrifices made by our soldiers in the Civil War and who still tears up during the playing of the “Star Spangled Banner,” it deeply troubled me to be called a traitor to the American people. I hold my responsibility as a delegate to the Republican National Convention as a sacred trust.

There will always be those who attempt to use harassment and intimidation to try and get what they want. History is littered with those who rose to power via bullying and the jackboot.

Here’s one Hoosier who will serve his country and his party without fear.

Barney Simms, a retired government bureaucrat and civic leader, was murdered at his Atlanta home April 9, shot dead in his front yard, his car stolen. Police have arrested 17-year-old Eric Banks, who, like Simms, is black.

On the same day in New Orleans, retired NFL standout Will Smith was shot dead, apparently a victim of a dispute over a fender bender. Cardell Hayes, a 28-year-old black man, has been charged with second-degree murder.

Most homicides are intraracial; the vast majority of black murder victims are killed by black assailants, as the vast majority of white victims are killed by whites. But black Americans are peculiarly vulnerable.

Even as crime has fallen, the black homicide rate remains stubbornly high.

For the year 2011, blacks represented 13 percent of the nation’s population, yet accounted for 50 percent of all homicide victims, according to “Black Homicide Victimization in the United States,” a report from the Violence Policy Center.

While the protesters of Black Lives Matter have justifiably focused on the egregious deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of white police officers, I long for a protest movement that shines the spotlight on black men and wom-

NIU Steelband set to perform at DeKalb library DAILY CHRONICLE The Northern Illinois University Steelband will jam its way to the DeKalb Public Library at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

This is the first time the Steelband is visiting the library as the building space hadn’t been conducive to the large number of musicians. The band will play in the lower level in the Yusunas Room.

The NIU Steel Band is directed by Liam Teague and Clifford Alexis. Created in 1973 by G. Allan O’Connor, it was the first active steel band formed in an American university and has performed throughout the United States and around the world.

NIU is one of the few institutions in the world where students can pursue music degrees (undergraduate and graduate) with the steelpan as the major instrument of choice.

NIU Steel Band is a 35-member group and mainly comprises steelpan and percussion majors. The band performs regularly at public schools, colleges and universities, as well as conventions and arts series. The group has four recordings to its credit, including the most recent, “Dangerous,” featuring an eclectic blend of styles.

NIU takes spring practice to Gately Stadium in Chicago

CHICAGO – Watching from the sideline as the Northern Illinois football team practiced Saturday morning at Gately Stadium, Blue Island Eisenhower senior Kenneth Scott said he had a few offers from small schools and had discussed with the Huskies about potentially being a walk-on redshirt next season.

By the end of the practice, Scott said he made up his mind – he wants to come to Northern Illinois.

“I like the intensity – the defense flies around and gets after it, that’s what I like to see,” said Scott, a 6-foot1, 210-pounder who played several positions for Eisenhower and who started talking with NIU defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator Brett Diersen in February. “It’s more

intense. It’s well put together. It’s fluent. There’s no bugs in the system, it’s fast-paced, and I like to see that.”

Scott already had a connection with the Huskies, with the Eisenhower coach being former NIU defensive end Travis Moore.

While NIU coach Rod Carey can’t talk about prospective recruits before they sign their National Letter of Intent – and he couldn’t speak with the recruits after practice Saturday because it was off campus – he did say he was happy with how the two-hour practice went.

“I was really happy operationally,” Carey said. “... We got to come down here and let people see us that normally couldn’t get out to see us, so that’s a big deal.”

Before the season, Carey said that part of the reason the Huskies would practice in Chicago was to be closer

to potential recruits, who might not otherwise be able to come to DeKalb for a spring practice.

Scott wasn’t the only potential recruit watching the Huskies practice, either. Naperville Central junior linebacker Troy Hudetz also was on the sideline with the defense while the Huskies scrimmaged, intently watching the linebackers. The 6-2, 205, Hudetz hasn’t had an offer, but he said he went to NIU’s Junior Day, attended a spring practice at Northwestern and talked with other Big Ten schools.

“Every time to get in front of the coaches as a recruit is valuable, especially if you’re under the radar and have no offers,” Hudetz said. “It’s definitely worth it. I was planning on going to the 5 a.m. practice on a

Barbs give short-handed T’wolves 1st loss

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The players on the DeKalb girls soccer team started off their home tournament on a positive note, with a 3-0 win over Indian Creek in their early game.

Kayley Garland and Lindsy Franzene scored for the Barbs in the first half, and Hanna Hickey added an insurance goal in the second half.

“Most importantly, we wanted to stay solid defensively,” Barbs coach P.J. Hamilton said. “We wanted our outside wingbacks to connect to our wingers, so we can get some more numbers forward.

Knowing that we played on a little small-

er of a field than we are used to, I had a lot of confidence in our outside backs to get forward and be more on the aggressive end.”

The Barbs were able to keep consistent offensive pressure on the Timberwolves, who were without their starting goal keeper, Josie Diehl, because of a concussion.

“We were pressing a little more than we are used to with a smaller field,” Hamilton said. “We kept our backs up, and kept putting the ball back in there.”

The Timberwolves suffered their first loss of the season, after starting out 6-0-1.

After Diehl suffered a concussion Friday in practice, coach Luke Anderson was forced to change his lineup.

“It was a big letdown for us,” Anderson said. “We had to change our tactics a little bit. We had some girls playing different positions than they’re used to, and we had to kind of do what we could with what we had. Credit to DeKalb, they play really good soccer.”

The Barbs won their late game, 3-0, against Hampshire.

The Timberwolves lost their late game, 3-1, to Belvidere. They will continue Barbfest play next Saturday against Hampshire. The Barbs (6-4-1) play Belvidere on Saturday to finish pool play before the medal round begins.

Hinckley-Big Rock may have had the most disappointing day, however.

After losing, 5-0, to Yorkville, they

dropped another tough match, 5-1, to Woodstock North. Against the Thunder, the Royals had multiple chances offensively, but were able to capitalize only once when Lillie Kossman scored in the first half, after the Royals were already down 2-0. Woodstock North held a 3-1 lead in the closing minutes of the game, but they scored twice in the final three minutes to put the game on Ice. “We struggled,” Royals coach Paul Taeuber said. “We’re still young and still learning. It’s disheartening, but I just hope we can pick it up for next week.”

After the two losses, the Royals are now 1-10 on the season.

They will resume Barbfest play Saturday against Sterling.

With about 100 onlookers on hand, several of the teenagers had their phones out to take pictures of the Huskies practicing. NIU also caught a break with perfect weather, with the temperatures in the mid-60s – causing senior wide receiver Aregeros Turner to take off his long sleeve shirt under his shoulder pads midway through practice. While Carey said he wasn’t ready to say if the Huskies would make practicing in Chicago an annual event, he felt it was good to give his players a change in venue.

Although the defense dominated most of the practice, sophomore running back Marcus Jones made a nifty move on a long touchdown run that brought cheers and applause from the crowd.

Huskies waiting to hear on satellite camps: Saturday’s practice likely a

was success, but NIU could have its one-day camp at Gately Stadium on June 5 wiped out if the NCAA board of directors approves the proposal to ban satellite camps for Division I football programs – meaning the school could hold camps for high school recruits only on the university’s campus.

Carey said that the Huskies have had great success with their one-day camps at Gately Stadium in the past, bringing in between 130 and 210 players each year.

However, what kind of impact would a potential ban on satellite camps have for NIU? “That’s a big question. What kind of impact will it have?” Carey said, before pausing. “To be determined. We haven’t been through it yet.”

Carey did point out an indirect effect of a ban.

“I know this impact – the impact for the young coaches, the (graduate assistants) across the nation, they usually go out and work other people’s camps and it’s a great networking tool and opportunity to earn money and that’s gone,” he said. “That’s really, really bad for our future coaches.”

“When I was here, it was bad,” Fleming laughed. “I’m glad they changed to turf. It’s nice to be back, I haven’t been back in a while. I haven’t seen a game on this field in, like, four years. I got a lot of good memories on this field. The only bad memory I have is not playing my final game because

When redshirt freshman linebacker Kyle Pugh, who played at Chicago Heights Bloom Township, came into the scrimmage wearing No. 57, a voice yelled out from the stands: “I see you, five-seven!”

Pugh, who said the voice was probably either his dad, Darryl, or one of his former football coaches, had played at Gately Stadium as a sophomore in high school – when the Blazing Trojan lost, 13-10, to Simeon in the first round of the Class 8A state tournament.

“Bad memories, man, we lost,” Pugh laughed. “But it still is nice to be back here and seeing some familiar faces.”

How much will Kevin White be held back?

General manager Ryan Pace said the Bears probably would have to rein in the receiver in the coming weeks. The first-round pick is “100 percent healthy” after missing last season after left shin surgery, Pace said, and excited to be back.

“I mean, it’s good to have a player that you have to pull back more than you have to push,” Pace said last month. “He’s one of those guys you’ve got to pull back a little bit just because of his attitude.”

Outside linebacker Pernell McPhee also is recovering from offseason arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

Will the Bears get a passing grade?

Dowell Loggains was promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator in part because of his relationship with Jay Cutler. To what extent will it bear fruit?

Loggains will have to rework the passing attack without running back Matt Forte, who signed with the Jets, and tight end Martellus Bennett, who was traded to the Patriots.

The assistants are new, too: receivers coach Curtis Johnson and quarterbacks coach Dave Ragone.

How will the culture change?

The Bears spent big money this offseason to infuse the team not only with talent but with a winning culture.

As a member of the Broncos, Danny Trevathan helped win 50 regular-season games the past four years, plus Super Bowl 50. Fellow inside linebacker Jerrell Freeman won 11 games three times in four years with the Colts.

How will the offensive line shake out?

Guard Kyle Long and Massie will make up the right side of the line.

The rest appears to be up for grabs, with Manny Ramirez brought in to challenge second-year center Hroniss Grasu and Ted Larsen to push left guard Matt Slauson.

Then there’s left tackle Charles Leno, Jr. The Bears said they like him there, but what happens if there’s a college star available when the Bears pick No. 11 on April 28?

Will there be any drama?

This year certainly will go smoother than last year.

Bennett stayed home from coach John Fox’s first offseason program while pining for a new contract he never would receive.

Also, in the last year of his deal, Forte missed the Brian Piccolo Award presentation at Halas Hall.

He avoided distraction the rest of the season, however, and was classy in his departure.

It’s no secret receiver Alshon Jeffery would prefer a long-term contract to the one-year franchise tag he’s been tendered.

Expect the two sides to reach a deal by July 15 without the soap opera antics of last year.

Blues’ rally does in Hawks

mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – They were coming off a brutal gut-punch of a loss, after which their coach implied there was an officiating conspiracy out to get them. They were coming into a hostile building, the home of the defending Stanley Cup champions and their longtime nemesis. And they were down a goal against the league’s ultimate closers.

Previous incarnations of the St. Louis Blues might have folded. These Blues did not.

“Whatever’s happened in years before,” Corey Crawford said, “they’re not the same team.”

These Blues rallied for two goals in the third period for a 3-2 victory in Game 3, handing the Blackhawks their first regulation loss in a game they led after two periods since the 2013-14 playoffs, a span of 77 games. These Blues responded to adversity the way the Hawks have done so many times in the past. These Blues present perhaps the toughest challenge yet for the Hawks, who have to win three of the next four games to get out of the first round.

The Hawks trail the series, 2-1, with Game 4 looming Tuesday night at the United Center, where the Blues have

won three times this season. It’s as close to a must-win in the first round that the Hawks have faced since they returned to Chicago down, 0-2, to the Blues in 2014. The Hawks won the next four games in that series. With Brian Elliott (44 saves) playing spectacularly, and the Blues showing newfound resolve and resiliency, it might not be so easy this time around.

“Throughout any playoff series, there’s going to be big momentum swings,” said Patrick Kane, whose high-sticking double-minor late in the third period led to Jaden Schwartz’s game-winning power-play goal. “You saw that [in Game 2]. They, obviously, had a good response tonight. It’s our turn to respond and fight back and try to get the series even.”

Or, as Crawford bluntly put it: “It’s always about the next game. We’ve got to get [angry]. I think we are right now.”

Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said the series, on an emotional level, feels like a Stanley Cup Final.

If anything, that should help the Hawks, who have a long history of playoff adversity to draw from. The Blues have lost three straight first-round series, squandering home-ice advantage in all three.

sports@daily-chronicle.com The DeKalb baseball team scored 21 runs in 10 innings Saturday, sweeping a double-header, 10-0 and 11-1, in games shortened by the run-rule against Rockford Jefferson.

Jacob Perkins and Alvaro Munoz picked up the wins for the Barbs (7-5), who also had a home run by Nate Sisler, his first of the year.

DeKalb has won four straight since a 17-3 loss Monday to Yorkville, scoring at least eight runs in each game and giving up two or fewer in three of them. The Barbs play Rochelle in a pair of Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference crossover games Tuesday and Thursday.

Sycamore winless in doubleheader:

The Spartans lost the first game, 11-7, to Ottawa and tied the late game, 6-6.

The Spartans only managed two hits in the first game, but earned seven walks. Michael Beaudoin had two RBIs without a hit, and James Marcinkowski was 1 for 4 with two RBIs. The Spartans were up 3-2 after three innings, but gave up eight runs in the top of the fourth.

Tyler Maveus, Austin Perry and Jarrod Motavon each had two hits in the late game, including a homer by Maveus. Marcinkowski drove in three runs.

Kaneland wins in eight: The Knights plated a run in the top of the eighth, then held on for a 5-4 win.

Will Ring pitched three innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win, allowing only one hit. Luke Calabrese had three hits, including 2 doubles, and scored twice. Jack Weigland was 3 for 3.

The Knights improved to 3-5 and will start a Northern Illinois Big 12 East series Monday at Morris.

IC edges Ashton-Franklin Center: Kevin Drendel drove in four runs as the Timberwolves won, 8-6.

BRIEFS Carl Edwards wins Sprint Cup Series race at Bristol Speedway

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Carl Edwards avoided tire issues that hampered his teammates and took off on the final restart to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race Sunday at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Starting on the pole for the second straight week, Edwards led 276 of 500 laps in Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 19 Toyota en route to his first victory of the season and fourth on the half-mile oval. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was second, followed by Kurt Busch, Chase Elliott and Trevor Bayne.

Edwards’ flawless day contrasted the rightfront tire problems endured by teammates Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin after all of them started in the top five.

Busch, the defending series champion and points leader, had trouble throughout the race. He exited after his car smacked the wall on Lap 259 and sustained heavy damage, failing to finish a race for the first time since June at Michigan.

Branden Grace wins RBC Heritage for first PGA Tour title

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Branden Grace shot a 5-under-par 66 to overtake Luke Donald and win the RBC Heritage on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title and 11th worldwide victory.

Three shots behind Donald entering the day, Grace moved to the top with four birdies on his first six holes.

The South African pulled three shots in front of Donald after birdies on the 12th and 13th holes.

Grace finished at 9-under 275, two shots ahead of Donald and Russell Knox. Donald shot a 71, and Knox had a 67.

Grace earned $1,062,000 and a PGA Tour exemption through the 2017-18 season. He also became the latest to rally past hardluck leader Donald at Harbour Town Golf Links. The Englishman has finished second four times and third twice in the past eight events here.

While the media often talk about PTSD in soldiers who have seen active combat, you don’t have to be in battle to get PTSD. A single horrible event, such as a bad auto accident, surely can do it.

In a previous column about PTSD, I mentioned a patient of mine years ago who was in a terrible auto accident as a young man. The accident, which broke many bones and caused him to be hospitalized for many weeks, occurred at a particular intersection not far from his home where a drunk driver ran a red light.

For years afterward, every time he came near the intersection, his heart raced, he broke out in a sweat and he felt like he was going to die. Finally, he stopped driving anywhere near that intersection. But he still had bad dreams.

Fortunately, with treatment, his PTSD became much less of a problem.

About 10 years ago, though, just after he retired, the bad dreams came back.

His explanation: “When I no longer had to worry about work, I was free to worry about other things.” An aggressive schedule of church work, book clubs and travel helped beat back the PTSD. So, a single crisis (such as your serious car accident) or a series of events – as long as they are severe enough – can

When diagnosing PTSD, doctors often look for three things: • Hyperarousal. This is an ongoing state of tension that resembles a “fight or flight” response to danger. You may experience insomnia, angry outbursts, an exaggerated startle response and hypervigilance. Headaches, trembling, diarrhea and fatigue are common.

• Avoidance. You may feel detached or numb. You may be unable to talk about the traumatic event or revisit the place where it occurred. PTSD patients often withdraw from people and social events, particularly those even remotely associated with the trauma.

• Re-experiencing. This is the worst symptom. Suddenly, a memory of the traumatic event takes over your brain.

It’s hard to concentrate or function normally. Recurrent nightmares also are quite typical. In extreme cases, you mentally may relive the traumatic experience.

Talk to your doctor. Whether or not you have PTSD, you clearly need support to recover from your experience. If it is PTSD, psychological support, drug therapy or a combination should help.

DEAR ABBY My husband is extremely critiJeanne cal of others. He Phillips almost never has anything nice to say about anyone. He badmouths his co-workers, friends, family members and strangers. We don’t have friends anymore because he doesn’t want to be around them. I don’t understand his type of personality.

He thinks his way of thinking and doing things is the only right way and everyone else is wrong. He’s always quick to shift the blame when something goes awry. If he accidentally bumps into someone or breaks something, it’s never his fault – the person was in his way, or the broken object was junk, etc.

What makes people this way? Is there any hope that he can change? We are nearing retirement age, and I need my space. Dear Abby: Kudos to you for your advice to “Willing to Do It in West Virginia” (Dec. 10), who asked for advice regarding temporarily adopting her son “Kevin’s” dog while he was away on deployment, which her husband did not want to do. The husband felt Kevin getting the dog in the first place was a mistake and her son should “learn his lesson.” You advised they should temporarily take the dog, since there was no way of knowing what might happen during his deployment.

Giving the dog to a shelter would have a high probability of being a death sentence. That’s not humane when there are viable alternatives, and the situation is no fault of the dog’s. An alternative would be to contact Dogs on Deployment (dogsondeployment.org), a national nonprofit that provides an online network that connects service members with volunteers willing to board their pets during their service commitments.

Dogs on Deployment promotes responsible, lifelong pet ownership by advocating for military pet owner rights, providing educational resources and granting financial assistance for military pet owners during times of emergency.

For two weeks, we have been looking at the few bidding conventions I believe pairs should employ.

But it is no use bidding perfectly if you play imperfectly -- although if you are always in the best contract, you will be tough to beat.

In today’s deal, how should the play go in four spades? West leads the heart two. East takes the trick with his ace and leads the suit back.

West wins, cashes his diamond ace, and shifts to a club. What next?

South’s two-diamond rebid was New Minor Forcing, showing at least game-invitational strength and asking North to describe his hand further. When North indicated threecard spade support, South jumped to game in that suit. Note that in three no-trump, North should immediately lose four hearts and one diamond.

Not that four spades is a walk in the park, since declarer must handle the trump suit without loss. What is the right way to try to do that?

South should win in the dummy and lead the spade jack. He hopes that East holds the king and either defender has 10-doubleton. When East covers, declarer takes the trick and cashes the spade queen. Here, this works.

Notice that if South starts with a low spade from the board (a sensible alternative), East can put up his king!

Then South would surely win and lead a spade to dummy’s nine.
