D-428 fires principal Shahran Spears’ attorney vows discrimination lawsuit By BRITTANY KEEPERMAN bkeeperman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The room in the Education Center erupted with an outburst from supporters when the DeKalb School District 428 board voted to dismiss Shahran Spears from her position as principal of Gwendolyn Brooks Elementary School.

The 5-2 decision was made shortly after 8 p.m. Monday, with Victoria Newport, Mary Hess, Rick Smith, Fred Davis and Vickie Heman-Faivre for and Kerry Mellott and Howard Solomon against. Board members didn’t explain why they voted the way they did at the meeting. An attorney representing Spears said he planned

to file a lawsuit against the district for discrimination. A public hearing that had started at 11 a.m. lasted about 30 minutes. The board then adjourned to closed session to discuss the matter for several hours. On June 2, the school administration had scheduled a meeting with Spears to dis-

cuss a notice of seven charges against her in regard to behavior the administration deemed against board policy, according to the notice from District 428 to Spears. Those charges addressed a variety of alleged actions by Spears, including using her

The city of broad shoulders, strong enough to carry the silver trophy once again. A Windy City party 77 years in the making. Duncan Keith scored in the second period and directed a dominant defense that shut down Tampa Bay’s high-scoring attack, and the Hawks beat the Lightning, 2-0, in Game 6

Patrick Kane had a goal and an assist, helping the Hawks clinch the Cup on home ice for the first time since 1938. Corey Crawford, who was pulled from the Hawks’ first-round series against Nashville, had 25 saves in his fifth career playoff shutout.
