Take the money and bake the cake POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS Some things are easier to embrace in theory – or from the big city – than when you consider how they work on Main Street.

Some libertarian-minded thinkers, such as syndicated columnist John Stossel, whose column appears on Saturdays in the Daily Chronicle, argue that people should have the right to discriminate in their private business on whatever basis they choose.

The free market will find another way to satisfy that unmet demand, the thinking goes, and business owners who make bad business decisions don’t tend to stay in business for very long. Besides, why should government be allowed to tell you who you can and can’t do business with?

Lawmakers in Mississippi and in North Carolina, both of which have recently passed laws permitting certain types of discrimination against the LGBT community, apparently agree with this premise. Usually, I appreciate the libertarian point of view, but it doesn’t work here.

The idea that you have the “right” to discriminate in your personal business could work in a large community where consumers have lots of choices. But what I’ve realized after living in a smaller community is that sometimes, your options are limited.

Enough people exercise this dubious right, and you’ve got a community where it’s just understood that certain businesses and services are off-limits to certain groups of people.

Our society was organized that way 60 years ago. People marched and were beaten and died to undo it, and we shouldn’t go back.

So yes, if you’re a baker who doesn’t approve of gay marriage and a same-sex couple asks you to bake a wedding cake for them, take their money and bake the cake.

There’s a social contract we have with one another in America, and it means sometimes we have to bake cakes we don’t like.

It doesn’t mean we have to eat them.

COUNTRY ICON MERLE HAGGARD, CHAMPION OF THE UNDERDOG, DIES

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Country giant Merle Haggard, who rose from poverty and prison to international fame through his songs about outlaws, underdogs and an abiding sense of national pride in such hits as “Okie From Muskogee” and “Sing Me Back Home,” died Wednesday at 79, on his birthday.

Haggard’s manager, Frank Mull, said the country icon died in Palo Cedro, California, of pneumonia that he had been battling for months. His publicist, Tresa Redburn, said no official cause of death has been determined.

He had kept up an ambitious touring schedule, but the pneumonia in both lungs had forced him to

STEM Read event focuses on Louis Sachar’s new book, ‘Fuzzy Mud’

DeKALB – Nearly 1,000 students showed up at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center on Wednesday for a morning of learning with award-winning author Louis Sachar as part of the STEM Read program.

Six different schools – some from as far as Chicago – came to the event that featured activities, talks and presentations revolving around the science behind Sachar’s new book, “Fuzzy Mud.” The event ended with a talk by Sachar, which gave students an opportunity to ask plentiful questions about the book and the author himself.

“This is the biggest one that we’ve done,” said Gillian King-Cargill, STEM Read director. “As soon as we knew we could bring in Louis Sachar, we knew to expect a crowd.”

The author has written more than 20 books for children and young adults including the more popular “Holes,” the Wayside School series and the Marvin Redpost series. Sachar’s first book was published in 1978.

The university puts on the STEM Read program in the spring and in the fall. The events are typically held in Altgeld Hall or the ballroom at Holmes Student Center and serve about 200 students. More than 750 students came to the event in the morning and an additional 200 came to the talk, King-Cargill said.

Sachar said he was impressed at the depth and breadth of the curriculum and morning events.

“They did this entire program based on ‘Fuzzy Mud.’ They had all sorts of projects based on it,“ Sachar said. “It was wonderful to see my work inspire so much.”

“Fuzzy Mud” is about a mysterious “mud” that causes rashes and blisters to human skin. The bioengineering mystery focuses on fifth-grader Tamaya Dhilwaddi and seventh-grader Marshall Walsh and also touches on how children can deal with bullying. Sachar said he always wanted to write a scary story, and this was his debut.

“Initially, I was thinking about this old ’50s movie called ‘The Blob,’ ” he said. “I wanted to do something like that. Kind of an old-fashioned, scary story that wasn’t full of too much blood and guts. That was my initial inspiration.”

enth-grader Katelyn Neidel said that she enjoyed the event and all the activi-

ties her school had been doing ahead of time to prepare.

“I read his books in elementary school,” she said. “I thought they were pretty cool, so it was cool to get to see him.”

Activities surrounding “Fuzzy Mud” included science units and learning about infectious diseases, so the book really could be good for students of all ages, not just elementary schoolers, she said.

“In science, we were watching clips of this movie called ‘Outbreak.’ ” she said. “It was almost like ‘Fuzzy Mud’ because there was an outbreak of this disease.”

Sachar wrote his first novel when he was 22 and told students that his best piece of advice for becoming an author is to get comfortable with rewriting.

“I rewrite my books at least six times before I even let anyone see them,” he said. “For me, that’s the more fun part – trying to make it as perfect as I can get it.”

Nonprofits gear up for Give Local campaign Oaken Acres joins more than 60 area nonprofits in fundraising push

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Give Local DeKalb County is putting a spotlight on the area’s nonprofit organizations and giving them a way to connect with donors of all stripes.

For Oaken Acres Wildlife Center in rural DeKalb County, the day of giving has helped fund capital projects such as the construction of an eagle habitat and fawn pen. This year, the wild animal rescue center hopes to rally donors to raise money to furnish the eagle habitat, among other things, founder and president Kathy Stelford said.

vas curtains to allow for more efficient use of the space, which was built largely with funds donated in 2014, the first year of the Give Local DeKalb County campaign, Stelford said. Funds raised in the 2015 event helped triple the size of the fawn pen at Oaken Acres Wildlife Center, Stelford said.

Stelford also wants to install stainless steel cages for the center’s mammal babies. The animals are housed in plastic pet crates. Stainless steel cages would make the facilities safer for both animals and handlers and more sanitary. She also wants to build a retirement home – of sorts – for one of Oaken Acres Wildlife

Center’s most iconic rescues, Vinnie, a 25-year-old vulture.

The vulture needs a heated shelter for the winter months, which can take a toll on the aging bird. Stelford said the new shelter would make Vinnie’s golden years more comfortable. Vinnie, she added, has been an ambassador for Oaken Acres Wildlife Center and inspired many of the center’s young visitors.

Oaken Acres Wildlife Center was started in 1984 and has cared for 11,000 wild animals over the years on a 33-acre wildlife habitat near Sycamore. Like many local nonprofit leaders, Stelford has jumped on board with Give Local DeKalb County campaign.

This year, the day of giving is May 3, and Stelford plans to make the most of it through social media posts and other communication with the center’s loyal supports. While she encourages people to give to Oaken Acres Wildlife Center, she sees the Give Local effort as a benefit to the entire community.

“Having a group to coordinate for nonprofits is invaluable,” Stelford said. “This is a good thing for the DeKalb County community.”

The DeKalb County Nonprofit Part-

nership is facilitating Give Local DeKalb County as part of Give Local America, a national day of local philanthropy. The DeKalb County Community Foundation and local donors have put up $53,000 in proportional matching funds to amplify local donations May 3.

The proportional match is the “icing on the cake,” Stelford said, because it boosts everyone’s giving power.

In 2015, Give Local America raised more than $68 million dollars for nonprofits and Give Local DeKalb County raise nearly $190,000. The inaugural Give Local DeKalb County campaign in 2014 raised nearly $120,000 for 37 local groups in 24 hours, said Ben Bingle, DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership manager for the DeKalb County Community Foundation.

“There has been a lot of momentum building around this event,” Bingle said.

“This is a great example of nonprofits working together.”

In 2014, 482 donors participated in the local event, including 193 first-time donors. Last year’s event attracted 699 donors to 55 nonprofit organizations. Bingle said that more than 65 nonprofits are taking part in this year’s event.

Harold then moved his family to Sunnyvale, California, and served for over 30 years in the San Francisco office of the Federal Trade Commission. He became a respected expert in the Truth in Lending Act and was proud to represent the interests of the nation’s consumers. While serving at the Commission, he made many life-long friends. After retirement, he and his wife Marilyn moved to Elk Grove, California.

Marylin A. Woodruff, 80, died peacefully Sunday, March 27, 2016, at the home of her daughter, Julie Lang, and surrounded by her loved ones. She is now at peace with her loving Lord and Savior and her husband whom she missed so much.

Born Nov. 16, 1935, in Courtenay, N.D. the daughter of Kenneth Helmers and Athalie Clark. Marylin married Robert T. Woodruff Jr. on November 24, 1956, in Lisbon, North Dakota. Marylin was a graduate of St. Lukes School of Nursing, Fargo, ND. She had been

a member of Crossview Church, EFCA, of Sycamore-Dekalb.

She is survived by her sister, Bernadine (Ken) Youel; five children, Philip (Ruth) Woodruff of Grayslake, IL; Timothy Woodruff of Columbus, OH; Julie (James) Lang of Chicago, IL; Daniel (Linda) Woodruff of St. Charles, IL; and Joan (Rich) Owens of Ft Collins, CO; and 17 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A man stole an SUV at gunpoint in DeKalb on Wednesday and later shot himself to death after leading police on a miles-long chase that ended near Lincoln Highway and Interstate 39, authorities said.

Police were withholding the man’s identity pending notification of his family, but said they believed he was the same person responsible for an armed robbery at West Ridge Apartments on Tuesday evening, in which a delivery driver was robbed at gunpoint of food.

According to a news release, DeKalb police received a call from the management office at West Ridge Apartments, 919 Ridge Drive, DeKalb about 1:30 p.m.

Wednesday. Police were told a tenant at the complex had held a maintenance employee at gunpoint and demanded the keys to his Chevy Equinox, according to a news release.

Police spotted the stolen vehicle headed south in the 100 block of South Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb, and then attempted to stop the vehicle when it headed west on Lincoln Highway, Petragallo said in a news release.

The suspect did not stop, however, and police pursued the Equinox into Ogle

DeKalb police, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Rochelle police, Hillcrest police, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois State Police all assisted on the call.

Police said evidence found in the man’s apartment linked him to the Tuesday robbery.

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Police want the City Council’s blessing to create a new system to make paying and contesting certain tickets quicker and easier.

Police Chief Glenn Theriault gave a presentation Monday to the council, outlining why he believes the city’s parking enforcement practices are inconsistent and out-of-date. He also suggested streamlining certain ordinance hearings through the police department to simplify the process for residents and free up space in the circuit court.

“If you drive down those streets, you’ll find that there are multiple ordinances that cover the same thing. Some will say ‘no parking on school days from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.’ There’s another section of ordinances that says ‘no parking from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.’ There’s another one from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.,” Theriault said. “As you start to look at it holistically, across the entire ordinance, it really doesn’t make sense.”

He added that implementing a $500 administrative tow fee would shift the cost of enforcement for criminal traffic violations from taxpayers to the offenders, and would keep a larger portion of

“I do firmly believe that an administrative tow system does hit people where it hurts and it gets them to realize you cannot use a car illegally,” Theriault said.

But 2nd Ward Alderman Chuck Stowe expressed concern that charging a $500 fee would rob drivers of due process.

“It just goes against my grain, that we should be charging someone for something they haven’t been convicted of,” Stowe said. “ . . . What we’re talking about just does not seem right to me. I personally don’t feel that’s really fair.”

Two women were killed, dozens of homes were damaged or destroyed and residents’ lives in the tight-knit, unincorporated DeKalb County area were forever changed, many have said.

The daylong event, with the theme “Fairdale: Year of New Beginnings,” will

begin at 10:30 a.m. with a brunch at the Kirkland Fire Barn for Fairdale residents and first responders. Then the rest of the program continues with Habitat for Humanity breaking ground on a new home.

Several local dignitaries and elected officials have been invited to speak. Gov. Bruce

Rauner, who visited Fairdale in the aftermath of the disaster, also has been invited.

The memorial will culminate with the passing out of gifts and flying kites.

The event is free and open to the public.

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Democrats are attempting to overhaul public schools funding for the first time since 1997 with a plan that gradually would shift money from wealthy districts to poorer areas in an effort to ensure the amount of money spent on education across the state is more equitable.

Schools largely have been spared the consequences of the state operating without a budget since July 1, thanks to Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner signing a spending plan for education while vetoing the rest of the funding package.

CHICAGO – Dennis Hastert’s lawyers asked a federal judge Wednesday to spare the former U.S. House speaker time behind bars in his hush-money case and sentence him to probation, saying the 74-year-old has already paid a steep price in shame and disgrace.

Illinois delays daily fantasy sports legislation

SPRINGFIELD – A measure to legalize daily fantasy sports betting in Illinois is being delayed as lawmakers continue working to craft the proposal.

The bill is among dozens of proposals that lawmakers are trying to get out of committees before a Friday deadline.

But Democratic state Rep. Michael Zalewski asked for an extension Wednesday to hear the bill later.

Illinois is among several states with pending legislation this year on whether to regulate daily fantasy sports betting.

Trump eyes shift to policy ‘meat’ as GOP convention fight looms

NEW YORK – Republican Donald Trump declared it’s “great to be home” at a massive rally in the New York City suburbs Wednesday, shrugging off a defeat in Wisconsin a day earlier and instead, predicting victory in his delegate-rich home state.

“I love these people. These are my people,” he said to thunderous cheers.

Trump supporters retaliated, declaring “socialism sucks!” and “leave this country!”

The rally comes as the GOP front-runner signaled a shift toward “more meat on the bone” in his policy speeches amid new signs of campaign discord after his stinging Wisconsin loss to rival Ted Cruz emboldened his critics and pushed the GOP closer to its first contested national convention in four decades.

Former gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino, one of Trump’s state co-chairs, said the campaign received 18,000 requests for Wednesday’s event, although the venue holds just 3,000 people.

Said Paladino, a Buffalo-based businessman: “We’ve seen people just coming up saying, ‘Where has he been?’

Thank God he’s here.”

As for possible friction in the campaign, Paladino said he’s had no problems with Trump’s campaign manager.

“They do have a small staff – probably smaller than they should have – but these guys work 24/7,” he said. “I don’t know how they keep their senses about them.”

Both parties shifted toward New York’s April 19 primary elections, where Democrat Hillary Clinton and Trump hold big leads in early polls.

Still, Sanders’ string of recent primary victories has done little to erode the former New York senator’s overwhelming delegate lead as the 2016 primary season lurches toward a high-stakes contest in two weeks in New York.

“The core issue in his whole campaign doesn’t seem to be rooted in an understanding of either the law or the practical ways you get something done,” Clinton said in an interview on MSNBC. She suggested Sanders “hadn’t done his homework” on specific prescriptions needed to address economic inequality.

As the Democratic front-runner tried to undercut Sanders’ recent momentum, Trump’s grasp on his party’s presidential nomination appeared far more tenuous. Senior Trump adviser Barry Bennett shrugged off Tuesday’s loss to Cruz, but he also said the billionaire businessman would soon begin to deliver a series of “presidential, substantive” speeches on his policy priorities. That list likely includes immigration, trade, defense and taxes.

“That’s coming,” Bennett said of the shift. “There will be more and more meat on the bone as we go forward.”

At the same time, Trump’s team quietly worked to resolve problems with its young delegate outreach operation, a critical tool as the primary campaign speeds toward the possibility of a contest convention. The tension centers on campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, whose management style has alienated some would-be allies on the ground in key states.

For example, the campaign over the weekend fired the person running its Colorado operation ahead of the state’s convention on Saturday. The move was confirmed by a person with direct knowledge of the staffing situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

The issues come as leading Democrats and Republicans acknowledge a growing likelihood that Cruz could wrestle the presidential nomination away at the GOP national convention in July.

Trump maintains a big delegate lead, but Cruz took a big step forward with his win in Wisconsin. Cruz has no realistic path to claim the nomination by the end of the primaries on June 7, but he might force a contested convention by blocking Trump from getting a majority of delegates in the state-by-state voting.

Huskie Pups not a good investment It’s to be expected that sometimes when you try new things, you fail.

Still, it would seem as though someone should have pulled the plug on Northern Illinois University’s “Huskie Pup” experiment before the school spent $270,000 on the plan.

School officials said last week that the vehicles, originally meant as free shuttles to take students around campus, were being re-purposed and now will be used to transport fans during athletic events or to shuttle prospective students around campus on visits.

While the vehicles will probably come in handy, it’s doubtful those functions would have been deemed worth the money.

The change is because the electric trams, introduced in August 2014, never caught on with students, despite an attempt in fall 2015 to expand their routes.

Given their limitations, it shouldn’t have been a surprise. The pups are designed to hold about 10 passengers and have a top speed of 25 mph. But they could not be used during cold-weather months because their batteries wouldn’t hold a charge, and they also weren’t useful during inclement weather.

They also were planned to run on the sidewalk rather than the street, which meant NIU had to spend money to widen some sidewalks.

Considering that most of the spring and fall semesters takes place during cold-weather months, how were the vehicles expected either to become part of students’ routine, or to be sufficiently useful to justify their price tag?

The Huskie Pup plan was approved by NIU’s Board of Trustees in May 2014, some months before the Illinois’ ugly financial situation escalated to become the crisis that it is today. They were one part of a larger plan to improve transportation around NIU’s DeKalb campus, which also included demolition of Douglas Hall to make way to extend Lucinda Avenue across campus.

But we can hardly blame those who look on the pups as a boondoggle. Although well-intentioned, this plan seems to have been one whose failure could have been foreseen and hopefully will not be repeated.

Triumph of the anti-Trumps Thanks to Wisconsin, a contested Republican convention just got more likely.

Donald Trump led in the Marquette University poll of Republican primary voters in January, and led bigger in February. In Tuesday’s primary, though, Ted Cruz won big.

It was a broad as well as big victory for the Texas senator (who is an old friend of mine): According to the exit polls, Cruz won among men and women, among post-docs and highschool graduates, and among all age groups.

As much as Trump’s opponents hoped that his campaign manager’s arrest for grabbing a female reporter and his verbal stumbles over abortion would finally cause some of his supporters to leave him, that doesn’t appear to be what happened.

Instead, the anti-Trump vote consolidated behind Cruz. If those controversies had an effect, it was to prevent on-the-fence voters from falling to Trump’s side.

Cruz also had an advantage he has lacked in most states: the support of the governor. And Scott Walker’s backing may have been more valuable than the backing of other governors would have been. Walker became a nationally controversial figure from his first weeks in office, when he successfully pushed to scale back unions’ collective-bargaining powers. He was subject to a recall

In other states, many conservative voters view the Republicans they have elected as wimps and sellouts.

Not in Wisconsin. And so a sentiment that has helped Trump elsewhere may have been weaker there.

Primary voters who consider themselves “moderate” backed Trump. A common argument for Cruz – that he is a true conservative and Trump is not one – naturally did not do much to attract them. But self-described conservatives outnumbered those moderates three to one, and they unified behind Cruz just as he had been urging them to do.

Trump still could finish the primaries with a majority of delegates. But that is less likely after his defeat in Wisconsin. Since Cruz is even further away from a majority than Trump is, that defeat also raises the probability that the delegates will have to select a nominee without a clear mandate for anyone.

For weeks, Trump and his surrogates have been preparing for this eventuality. They are engaged in a dual campaign. They would like to persuade Republicans that the candi-

date who wins the most votes and delegates deserves the nomination, even without a majority of either. Failing that, they want to persuade them that passing over the plurality winner will lead to an epic, and maybe even a violent, split in the party.

But nominating Trump without a majority would wound the party more deeply, at least in Wisconsin.

Thirty-seven percent of primary voters said they would be concerned or scared if Cruz won the presidency, but an actual majority – 58 percent – said they would feel that way if Trump did. In national polls against Hillary Clinton, Cruz is much more competitive than Trump.

But as those numbers suggest, both Cruz and Trump have a lot of enemies among Republicans. So as the candidates continue their long slog to the Cleveland convention starting July 18, we can expect continued wishful speculation that the convention could end up nominating someone else.

If Paul Ryan is getting sick of answering questions about his interest in running for president this year, his home state’s primary on Tuesday did not do him any favors.

And so this appears to be just the latest in a long pattern of concessions to protect the president’s “legacy” deal.

In recent months, the administration gutted a new law to strengthen the visa waiver program to please the Iranians and has imposed only minimal sanctions on Iran’s missile program – even as Iran launches missiles stamped with the words “Israel must be wiped off the face of the earth.”

Iran claims it wants an end to these sanctions, and in turn greater access to the world’s financial systems, to spur economic growth.

But countries that want to attract international investment shouldn’t shovel cash to terrorists while accelerating production of the delivery vehicle for a nuclear weapon.

Nor should they threaten neighbors with annihilation.

Allowing a belligerent Iran access to the U.S. dollar poses real dangers

to our country and economy. In February, the Financial Action Task Force – an organization comprising nearly 40 nations – warned that it is “exceptionally concerned about Iran’s failure to address the risk of terrorist financing and the serious threat this poses” to the world’s financial system.

That’s why I’m working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle on legislation to put in place strict statutory prohibitions to keep Iran from receiving the benefits of accessing the U.S. financial system.

Iran has seen what Obama will do to preserve his nuclear deal, and it’s taking full advantage.

The United States cannot cave again. Congress should make clear that until the Iranian regime drops its illicit missile program and funding of terrorism, it won’t receive another dime of sanctions relief.

Trump’s bad border idea gets worse Amazingly, Donald Trump has taken a bad idea and made it worse.

His plan to get Mexico to pay for a wall along the border – by effectively requisitioning the earnings of Mexicans working in the U.S. – would undermine not only his goal of reducing illegal immigration, but also a powerful and efficient force for good in the world.

Trump is certainly correct that cutting off U.S. remittances would hurt Mexico. In 2015, the $25 billion that Mexicans working in the U.S. sent across the border accounted for roughly 2 percent of its gross domestic product.

Overall, the roughly half-trillion dollars of remittances that migrants send to poor countries each year far outstrip foreign aid and investment and provide direct assistance to those who need it most.

And when people send money back home, they may make their families more willing to stay there.

Just last year, Congress appropriated some $750 million dollars to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras precisely to address the violence and poverty that have sent so many of their citizens fleeing northward. But even that generous investment amounted

to only one-fifteenth of what those countries received in remittances last year. In Mexico, many of the 6 million households that receive remittances rely on them for half their income.

Never mind the impact of Trump’s plan on U.S. relations with its neighbor, or the numerous legal obstacles at home, or the staggering impracticalities of carrying it out.

From a purely economic perspective – surely one that Trump can appreciate – it makes no sense.

Rather than threatening to block remittances, the U.S. should be advancing efforts to ensure that they provide

productive capital for businesses, jobs and infrastructure. Initiatives to encourage remittance recipients to deposit the money in banks, for example, would help, as would spurring competition to reduce transaction fees or encouraging the creation of “diaspora bonds” that channel savings into national development.

That kind of effort would help the U.S. both directly and indirectly, bolstering partners and winning more buyers for U.S. products.

For it to be successful requires building more bridges, not walls.

In a battle of two teams that are off to tremendous starts, the undefeated Kaneland girls soccer team travels to one-loss Sycamore in a game between squads that could potentially face off when the postseason rolls around.

“It should be an exciting game, and I figured it would be before the season,” Sycamore coach Dave Lichamer said.

“We’ve had some really good games, and I wouldn’t expect anything less.”

The game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Thursday at Sycamore.

Kaneland (5-0 overall, 1-0 in Northern Illinois Big 12 East) has been dominant on both sides of the ball this season. The Knights have outscored their opponents, 25-0, with the offense averaging five goals a game and senior goalkeeper Emily Chapman recording five clean sheets in the early part of the season.

Lichamer said that Chapman will be a challenge and that he’s been more impressed with the Knights’ shutouts than their high-volume scoring.

The Knights have gotten six goals from both junior Holly Collingbourne and senior Kiandra Powell, four goals from junior Becca Richtman and three goals from senior Gabrielle Cano.

“You have to be error-free and if you make a mistake, it better be a small one,” Lichamer said. “If you make one mistake, one ‘oops,’ you’ve seen that Kaneland can put the ball in the back of the net. But if they make a mistake, we can be off the other way. It will be a battle to see who can take advantage of the mistakes.”

Collingbourne had the lone goal when the Knights won, 1-0, at DeKalb on a wet Tuesday afternoon. Her goal came with less than 18 minutes remaining, and the ball crossed the goal line after her shot was mishandled by the DeKalb goalkeeper.

Sycamore’s only loss came in a 2-1 defeat against West Chicago (2-5 overall) in a rainy game at the Glenbard South tournament March 23.

While Kaneland’s speedy defense has not allowed a goal all season, the Sycamore defense is also riding a hot wave coming into the game. In the past four contests, the Spartans are outscoring opponents 9-0 – including a 2-0 victory at Morris on Tuesday. All four clean sheets have come with Amanda Cook in goal.

Sycamore, at least record-wise, is the biggest threat Kaneland has faced this season. In the Knights’ four previous games – not including the 10-0 victory over IMSA – they have picked up wins against teams that are a com-

bined 9-11-2. DeKalb (3-2-1) is the only team they’ve faced that currently has a winning record.

“We want these games,” Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said after his team’s 1-0 win over DeKalb. “This is what gets you prepared for playoffs. (Winning) 10-0 doesn’t do anything for the playoffs but get people some experience.”

The Knights and Spartans are both in the same subsection of the Class 2A DeKalb Sectional, in which Burlington Central and Sterling will be regional hosts.

The two teams nearly intersected in the playoffs last season, too. Sycamore fell to Freeport, 2-1, in the Class 2A Rockford Boylan Catholic Sectional semifinal, and Kaneland eventually knocked out Freeport with a 1-0 victory in the sectional final – in 12 rounds of penalty kicks – before the Knights lost 4-1 in the DeKalb Supersectional to Peoria Notre Dame.

Cheers to the always classy Bill Raftery KORCEK’S CORNER

Before I forget.

Thought No. 1: For the fans at home,

the frosting on the NCAA Final Four men’s basketball cake is entertaining, glib TV analyst Bill Raftery who has steadfastly climbed the CBS-TV sports broadcasting ladder.

Working his 34th NCAA hoops tournament, the 73-year-old Raftery now hangs with the big boys, Jim Nantz and Grant Hill, for his second straight Final Four.

The former Seton Hall head coach (1970-81) is a breath of fresh on-air and a 180-degree shift from humorless stuffed shirts such as Billy Packer (who was only good teamed with Al McGuire as a press row foil on NBCTV decades ago).

Raftery’s recent one-liners evoked one of my favorite all-time Northern Illinois University NCAA tourney memories.

It was the day before the Huskies’ 1991 appearance in the NCAA Midwest Regional versus St. John’s in Dayton, Ohio, and sometimes, as sports information director, you never know what to expect at the media sessions – especially from national guys who sometimes look down on mid-majors.

But not Raftery who disarmed me with his friendly, unassuming manner and initial questions.

“Mike, how long have you been at Northern Illinois?” When I told him a “long time,” Raftery followed up with this. “Did you know ‘Jorgy’?”

At some point in the cablecast of the game against UC-Santa Barbara, Ryan was talking how historic a Huskie triumph in Las Vegas would be (I agree).

But, unfortunately, he remarked that the Northern Illinois program is not a rebuild since you cannot rebuild “what never was.” Oh really? What never was? Never? That’s a long time.

Tell that to our former NIU players, coaches, or local fans who jammed Evans Field House for many years.

mater is no Kentucky (55 NCAA men’s basketball tournament bids). Four berths in 49 D-I seasons isn’t exactly great, but it’s our history – the only one NIU has.

Thought No. 3: Congratulations to ex-Northern Illinois men’s basketball assistant coach Dave Kaplan upon his April 30 induction into the media wing of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

The 55-year-old Kaplan, an aide to NIU Hall of Fame head coach John McDougal from 1983-86, now does his radio gig at WMVP-AM and hosts on Comcast SportsNet Chicago.

Thought No. 4: Anybody recognize the No. 2 scorer at NCAA D-II Merrimack College (Mass.) this winter?

None other than 6-foot, 165-pound shooting guard Troy Hammel, yes, the youngest son of ex-NIU head men’s coach Brian Hammel (1991-2000). At our 1996 NCAA tournament press conference, I can still recall coach Hammel holding young Troy in his lap.

Wow, time flies.

In 27 starts for the 15-12 Warriors in 2015-16, Hammel averaged 17.6 points. and four rebounds per game, plus contributed 60 assists and 37 steals.

Like his old man, the kid could shoot – hitting 67 of 157 (42.7 percent) from 3-point land and 89 of 99 (89.9) at the free-throw line. Troy played for his uncle Bert Hammel, who completed his 36th season at MC. Final Thought: Condolences to the family and friends of ex-NIU football player Howie Fagan who passed away March 27. A three-year letterman (1957-59) for head coach Howard Fletcher, Fagan performed with Hall of Famers such as QB Lew Flinn and Tom Beck, plus fellow end Al Eck. As a senior, Northern Illinois posted its best record in eight years (7-2).

Fagan was the longtime director of sponsorships and community relations at Hawthorn Race Course in Cicero.

The all-time Fagan story: On the morning of an NIU home game, Fagan received a speeding ticket on Route 38 in Wheaton. The judge put him in jail since he could not pay the fine. So Northern Illinois AD George “Chick” Evans rushed to Wheaton, bailed Fagan out, and got him back to Glidden Field by the second half of the game.

Rumor has it that Evans just might have exceeded the speed limit en route back to DeKalb.

The Iowa women’s 400-meter relay team finished 10th at the 72nd Annual Pepsi Florida Relays on Saturday in Gainesville. Hawkeyes’ senior and Sycamore alumnus Lake Kwaza is part of the relay team that finished in 44.50.

Western Illinois junior Jasmine Brown finished seventh in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, 2 inches at the Joey Haines Invitational on Friday at Abe Stuber Track & Field Complex in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, on the campus of Southeast Missouri State.

The DeKalb grad was the 2015 Summit League Field Athlete of the Year.

Senior shortstop and DeKalb grad Brian Sisler was 0-for-3 with an RBI for Northern Illinois (7-20, 3-3 MAC West) as the Huskies avoided a home sweep to Miami (Ohio) with a 6-1 win in game two of a doubleheader Sunday at Ralph McKinzie Field.

Genoa-Kingston grad Jacob Langford was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Carroll in a 6-1 loss to Wheaton on March 26. The sophomore has a .220 batting average.

Jordan Bock gave up a hit, run,

earned run and had a strikeout in Marian’s 10-0 loss in game one of a doubleheader against Wisconsin-Platteville at home on Tuesday. The freshman pitcher from Kaneland has a 3.09 ERA, and is 2-0 in four appearances, which includes one start.

The Winona State softball team was swept at home in a doubleheader, 3-2, 10-2, against Minnesota-Duluth on Saturday. Sophomore Paige Keegan was 2-for-3 with a home run, run and an RBI in game one. The Genoa-Kingston grad has a .342 batting average, three homers and 18 RBIs for the Warriors (24-10).

Valparaiso notched its first two Horizon League wins in a doubleheader sweep against Northern Kentucky.

Even when discussing his personal disappointment in a subpar season – he is on a pace for career lows in assists per game and points per game – he sounded ready to move on to the postseason.

“It was at times frustrating,” Toews said of his 2015-16 regular season, which still has two games to go.

“It is what it is. I’ve obviously got to assess my game and look at ways I can improve and produce more consistently over 82 games.

“The best news is I have a great chance at playing my best hockey of the year. That’s always my focus – trying to trend upwards as the playoffs come around. That’s what I’m looking forward to. I’m excited for that opportunity, and I think every one in this (locker) room probably thinks the same way.”

With five victories in their past six games, the Hawks seem ready to move

Next Hawks vs. St. Louis, 7:30 p.m. today, CSN, AM-720 onto the playoffs and deal with whatever scenario ensues – regardless of who they play and whether they have home-ice advantage. Still, their showdown with the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night at the United Center has a bit of intrigue on several levels: • The Hawks (47-26-7, 101 points) still can beat out the Blues (48-23-9, 105 points) for second place in the Central Division and home ice for a firstround playoff matchup by beating the Blues in regulation, then beating the Blue Jackets on Saturday in Columbus while the Blues lose in regulation at home to the Capitals, who will have nothing to play for.

• Even if the Hawks finish third in the Central Division, they can leave a calling card for the playoffs with a convincing victory that reminds the Blues – who have lost in the first round

of the playoffs the past three seasons, despite having home-ice advantage – the Hawks are still the Hawks and the Blues are still the Blues.

• If the Hawks lose to the Blues on Thursday night, it could help bump the Blues into first place in the Central and push the Dallas Stars (43-28-9, 105 points) into second place and a firstround matchup with the Hawks that arguably could be more favorable.

The Stars, a potent offensive team with shaky goaltending and defense, might not be built for the postseason – where offense is often muted by tight checking and defense and goaltending are at a premium.

• As well as the Hawks have played recently, they need to beat a top-tier team. The Hawks haven’t beaten a current playoff team since beating the Red Wings, 4-1, March 6. They have beaten a team playing as well as the Blues since beating the Capitals, 3-2, Feb. 28. Goalie Scott Darling is 6-3-1 in place of injured starter Corey Crawford, but he hasn’t beaten a playoff team since a 3-1 victory over the Penguins on Jan. 6.

The Northern Illinois baseball team had to overcome a big deficit early and fell 1210 at Minnesota on Wednesday afternoon.

The Huskies (7-21 overall, 3-3 in MAC West) trailed 7-0 after the first inning and 11-2 after the third before outscoring the Gophers (16-10 overall, 2-1 in Big Ten) 8-1 in the final five innings.

Northern Illinois senior Tony Brandner went 3 for 5 with five RBIs, including a three-run double in the top of the ninth to cut the Gophers’ lead to two. Sophomore second baseman Brad Wood and senior right fielder Stephen Letz both went 2 for 5 with two runs and junior first baseman Tommy Hook was 1 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs for the Huskies, who scored five runs in the fifth and three more in the ninth.

Junior starting pitcher Aaron Rumfield took the loss for the Huskies after a rough outing in which he allowed seven runs on six hits in just one inning.

The Huskies, who are now 1-4 against Big Ten teams this season, host Central Michigan (6-23 overall, 1-2 in MAC West) in a three-game series that begins at 3 p.m. Friday at Ralph McKenzie Field.

By Gina Kraman With spring underway, thoughts of warmer weather and air conditioning are not far behind. Some people are remembering unresolved air-conditioner problems from last summer, and need to decide whether to fix their existing unit, or install a new one for the coming hot weather.

Brad Cobb, foreman and sales, Dahlquist, Inc., a heating, ventilation and air-conditioning company, explains, “Spring is the best time to get air-conditioning estimates and proposals. Utility companies, including Commonwealth Edison, are offering rebates to customers who choose higher efficiency equipment. These companies want consumers to reduce energy consumption, and are offering generous incentives.”

Cobb adds, “The Environmental Protection Agency has raised the minimum Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) from

10 to 13. SEER measures how much cooling a system delivers for each unit of energy it consumes when operating. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the system.”

However, units with a higher SEER may also have higher price tags.

“Before we give a customer an estimate on a new system, we ask a lot of questions. If a customer doesn’t plan to stay in his house for many years, he may never reap the longterm savings of a higher efficiency air conditioner. Sometimes repairing existing equipment is more in the budget,” Cobb explains.

He adds that many home cooling problems can be avoided with annual seasonal maintenance. “Spring is when customers should schedule preventive maintenance for their air conditioner. Once the outside temperature is above 55 degrees, we can check the unit’s refrigerant levels, and thoroughly test and clean the system. A clean air conditioner allows for better air flow, which helps the system work more efficiently.”

The Timberwolves allowed a goal with 46 seconds remaining and tied 2-2 with IC Catholic on Wednesday at Indian Creek.

The Timberwolves led 2-0 at halftime behind goals by Olivia Muetze and Jacklyn Bouma.

OAKLAND, Calif. – Brett Lawrie has been bouncing around the White Sox dugout like it’s the postseason, but you’ll have to excuse him if you think it’s a little much.

“These games have been tight games. Duty calls,’’ Lawrie said Wednesday.

Jimmy Rollins’ homer in the ninth inning Tuesday ignited the dugout, as you might expect after the bullpen gave up a two-run lead in the eighth.

Lawrie would be wound tight washing his car, so his display of exuberance in that moment shouldn’t come as a surprise. He says it’s not an act.

“I’m just excited right now, and that’s how I am,’’ Lawrie said. “I just try to be me and only be me. That’s going to be perceived the way it is, and hopefully it’s in a good way.’’

However it’s perceived, it’s not going to end if the Sox keep winning close games. Their first two wins were by one run.

Theresa Caputo, star of TLC’s “Long Island Medium,” will appear at Northern Illinois University’s Convocation Center, 1525 W. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb, on April 17 as part of her live tour that kicked off this week.

The practicing medium also is the author of two books, “There’s More to Life than This: Healing Messages, Remarkable Stories and Insight from the Other Side” and “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up: Life Changing Lessons From Heaven.”

“It’s the living that get camera shy,” Caputo said. “The dead don’t care.”

The two-hour live show is less of a lecture and more of an interactive, intimate experience, she said.

Caputo said she has had the ability to sense, see and feel spirits since she was a young child. As her gift developed, she learned to communicate and channel past souls, she

said. She doesn’t let skeptics get her down.

“I’m the first to admit what I do is crazy,” she said. “But there are things that I talk about and say that there is no way I would have known. ... Everyone has a right to an opinion.”

People can come to the show with expectations for a fun and meaningful evening, Caputo said.

“Honestly, in a large group, spirit is more playful,” she said. “There’s a lot of personalities, a lot of souls. People will cry and laugh. ... I know with every message I deliver, it’s not only healing the person I am speaking to but 40 to 100 other people [in the audience.]”

Connections aren’t guaranteed, and often people who weren’t expecting to be read will have an experience, Caputo said.

“This isn’t about anyone believing in mediums,” she said. “When people leave, I want them to leave knowing that a loved one is with them.”

NIU Art Museum opens Art Deco exhibition DAILY CHRONICLE The Northern Illinois University Art Museum opens a major exhibition suite this spring that explores the exuberance and glamour of the Art Deco period with two full exhibitions and two smaller studies.

“Between the Wars: Contrasts, Parallels, Shifts and Patterns” and “Beyond Gatsby: Common Luxury in American Art Deco” chart the stylistic expressions and transitions that occur in American Art Deco style alongside “The Chicagoan: a Periodical of the Era” and “Deco and Art Moderne Architecture in Illinois,” two studies presenting elements unique to Chicago and Illinois from the era between the wars.

Visitors will enjoy seeing a wide range of items from the period including numerous decorative objects, furniture, jewelry, fashionable dresses and hats, posters, prints, magazines and advertisements, as well as architectural examples all highlighting the varied stylistic ways America adopted and adapted the movement over the course of its popularity.

The exhibitions run from Thursday, April 7, through Friday, May 20, with a series of public lectures, programs and film screenings related to the shows.

A reception hosted by the Office of the President will celebrate the exhibitions’ opening and new student work in the presidential office galleries from 5 to

‘Natural Rhythm’ exhibition on display at The Art Box DAILY CHRONICLE “Natural Rhythm,” an exhibition of encaustics by Patricia Lagger of Aurora and photographs by Daniel Grych of DeKalb, will be on display at The Art Box, 308 E. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb, from April 11 to May 12. An opening reception is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 10.

The art by these two artists will show how their experiences are intertwined through music and the changing of the seasons.

Lagger is an artist and musician. She has been a piano teacher, helping hundreds of young students deepen their love of music. Working with piano students has strongly influenced the way she approaches art. Her paintings are about rhythms and harmonies she imagines in visual form.

Encaustic is an art form as old as Egyptian mummies, a medium of painted colored wax. The process involves heating damar resin crystals with purified beeswax to cook the basic medium. Lagger prepares a wooden surface with several coats of this medium, fusing each layer with a torch. Slowly the design builds, as she adds pigment, oil sticks, oil paint, layer by layer, each time fusing with fire. She frequently scrapes back to reveal hidden layers, and works various surfaces.

Lagger has studied with well-known teachers including Dorothea Bilder at Northern Illinois Univer-

Grych has been a resident of DeKalb since 1972. He came as a transfer student from Morton College. He earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting and drawing from NIU in 1974. Walter Ball was a major influence while Grych pursued his degree in painting.

Although he tried leaving DeKalb several times to seek a career in the fine arts, he seems to drift back.

As a low-profile artist, he is responsible for drawing about 50 ink portraits for the NIU Athletic Hall of Fame and was a lead artist for the wall mural at the intersection of First Street and Lincoln Highway. His work has been on display locally at the Ellwood House art fairs, the public library and the Norris Cultural Photo provided Center, and more prestigiously at the Art Institute of “Evening Song #4” by Pat Lagger is part of the “Natural Chicago Art Rental and Sales Gallery in the late 1970s.

“Blithe Spirit,” the Northern Illinois University School of Theatre and Dance’s upcoming Mainstage Series production, is what director Patricia Ridge calls “a classic.”

The supernatural comedy will open Thursday, April 7, at the Huntley Middle School auditorium, 1515 S. Fourth St. in DeKalb.

“Noel Coward wrote this play in 1941, at the worst of the bombing by the Germans over London. He wrote it in five days to cheer up everybody, and I’m sure he did,” Ridge said in a news release.

Set in England in 1935, “Blithe Spirit” takes place in the home of Charles and Ruth Condomine. To help Charles to get information for his next book, a medium named Madame Arcati is invited to conduct a séance. However, things don’t seem to go as planned as Madame Arcati brings back Charles’ first wife, Elvira, from the dead.

To put it simply, Ridge said, the play is about a “man with two wives.” Of course, she added, Charles is in for some trouble.

“We’ve laughed our way through

rehearsal, and it’s a good way to end the season,” Ridge said in the release.”

Throughout the play, Charles is the only one who can see his dead wife. Although Elvira knocks over vases, throws things and generally attempts to make Charles’ life miserable, his living wife, Ruth, believes he’s crazy.

The ghostly special effects were designed by theater design and technology major Charles Hoeg.

“Blithe Spirit” is the last play Ridge will direct for the school after teaching at NIU for 25 years.

Shows are scheduled from Thursday, April 7, through Sunday, April 10, and Thursday, April 14, through Saturday, April 16. Northern Illinois University’s 2016 World Music Festival opens today.

The NIU Middle Eastern Music Ensemble, directed by Omar al Musfi, and guest artist Issa Bolous, will kick off this year’s festival at 6:30 p.m. in the NIU School of Music’s Recital Hall.

Musicians will perform a wide array of traditional and contemporary Arabic and Turkish music.

All the events in the 2016 World Music Festival are open to the public free of charge.

Sleep duration key to good health Dear Dr. K: I’ve heard a lot about the harmful effects of insufficient sleep. But are there any dangers of sleeping too much?

Dear Reader: Over the years, we’ve learned sleep is important for a variety of reasons. It appears to be vital for forming long-term memories. It also helps you to digest what you have learned the previous day. Sleep promotes concentration and restores energy; it helps to keep your immune system functioning well and to regulate eating patterns.

The average adult needs seven to nine hours a night. Does it matter whether you get more or less than the ideal amount of sleep? That’s tough to answer – in part, because the effects of sleep are difficult to separate from other factors that can affect the quality or duration of your sleep.

Studies have linked short sleep duration – five hours or fewer each night – with a number of health problems, including high blood pressure and diabetes. Sleep deprivation also is a major contributor to car accidents, accounting for an estimated 100,000 accidents a year in this country.

Surprisingly, there also might be health problems associated with too much sleep.

Large, well-designed studies have analyzed the relationship between amount of sleep and length of life. Thousands of people have answered detailed questionnaires about their sleep habits and their health status over many years.

In these studies, the death rates for people who sleep the least – and the most – are higher than those people whose sleep time falls in the middle.

The reason isn’t clear. It’s possible a related factor might be responsible. Specifically, people with certain diseases and conditions may both sleep longer and die sooner. In other words, it might not be the

For example, people who sleep excessively might be drinking too much, and it could be the drinking that’s impairing their health. As another example, some people suffering from major depression sleep longer. Depression, in turn, is linked to heart disease and to suicide.

There are other common health problems that also cause people to sleep more and that may shorten life. These include: • thyroid disease; • kidney or liver disease; • a sleep disorder such as obstructive sleep apnea; • dementia.

Some medications used to treat serious illnesses also can make a person groggy and sleepy. That’s another way sleeping long hours might be linked to dying sooner.

In summary, I’d say there is little evidence that simply sleeping unusually long hours – such as more than nine hours a night – actually shortens your life. And there are plenty of healthy people who regularly sleep more than nine hours a night.

But if you asked your question because you’ve found yourself sleeping a lot more than you used to, check it out with your doctor. The long hours might not be hurting you, but they could be a sign of an underlying medical condition that could hurt you.

wondering how to approach a situation following a visit with some relatives.

We enjoyed a wonderful visit, and they were very nice to put us up in their guest room. A few days into our stay, I woke up with strange and very itchy bites on my legs and shoulders.

When I mentioned it to our host, she quickly supplied me with some itch cream and changed the subject.

After we returned home, we met a few of our relatives, and they mentioned this particular household was experiencing a bed bug problem. I was shocked and a little hurt they didn’t mention the infestation or warn us ahead of time.

We’re in the process of making sure we didn’t bring any of these critters home, but if we must hire an exterminator or replace furniture, we will be in a bind financially.
