No surprise at so many unwanted TVs POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS By the time I showed up at the DeKalb County Health Department building off Annie Glidden Road on Saturday, just after noon, the long lines of people were gone.

All that was left was a big, green dump truck filled to capacity with old TV sets and computer monitors, the driver buckling in, getting ready to leave.

Other TVs sat in the parking lot, shrinkwrapped, most of them on pallets. All of these discarded former centers of attention were waiting to be taken wherever you take an old TV set. It’s not a landfill – the state said in 2012 that landfills wouldn’t take them anymore.

County officials were surprised that people started queuing up at 7 a.m. to get rid of these things, but maybe they shouldn’t have been.

If they’re big, it’s hard to get rid of them for free, and until about 10 years ago, these behemoths were in almost everyone’s home.

Some people had to bring their unwanted TVs and monitors back home with them because the event was cut short.

A lot of the old TVs that were left behind didn’t look like junk. Most were in pretty good shape, and probably were built to last much longer than they ultimately were used.

Unfortunately, no one wants them. And they’re not exactly worth much – I watched a YouTube video where a guy went to all the trouble of deconstructing one of these old sets and came out with a big mess and less than $4 worth of scrap, mostly from the copper

Funny that we used to pay hundreds, even thousands of dollars for these things, and today, technology has rendered them so obsolete that they’re worth even less to most people than their scrap value.

The faster our technology moves, the more we seem to create expensive, hard-to-disposeof junk that almost no one wants – phones, computers, computer monitors, TVs. Then when somebody agrees to take them, they’re overwhelmed.

Hopefully, the county can find someone else willing to take on the remaining unwanted, unneeded TV sets. Maybe we need to think outside the box a little – art students, TV, movies, stage productions might have use for some of them.

But unless you’re willing to pay for disposal – or you have a 32-inch or smaller set that you can take to Best Buy for free – you’d might have to hold a spot in the basement for that old set for a while yet.

JAIL PROJECT MOVES FORWARD Officials working to secure permits; construction could begin this month

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Officials are in the process of securing all the permits necessary to begin work on the $35 million project to expand the DeKalb County Jail this month.

Brian Kerner, senior associate with Elgin-based Dewberry Architects Inc., told the DeKalb County Public Building Commission on Tuesday that project leaders are “in the thick” of the permitting process. The project has already gotten a green light from the Illinois Department of Corrections, but still needs approval from the city of Sycamore, the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and others.

Kerner said construction would likely begin this month, but didn’t give the commission a specific date.

“Every time you put a shovel in the ground you get a surprise, but we’re not even at that stage yet,” he said, adding that “we have had some additional requests from the city of Sycamore for utility work.”

Kerner said the cost of that utility work could potentially be shared with the city under terms of an intergovernmental agreement between the two taxing bodies.

DeKalb County Administrator Gary Hanson told the commission that he was in the process of planning for a groundbreaking ceremony for the project, but no date had been set.

Chairman Larry Lundgren made a point of requesting that all change orders for the project be submitted in writing. Commissioners also asked that emergency change order requests be reviewed by the commission’s chairman, Matt Swanson, or vice chairman to avoid surprises down the line.

Once completed in 2018, the expanded jail would have capacity for 163 beds, with immediate plans to use 133. Overcrowding at the jail has been a problem for decades. The county plans to use multiple revenue sources, notably increased revenue from “tipping fees” at Waste Management’s landfill near Cortland, to finance the project.

North Locust Street will be vacated

to the county from East State Street to East Exchange Street after the work begins. However, the county will keep the street open so people will have access to the Sycamore Public Library, the jail and other surrounding parking lots.

Additionally, Exchange will be partially reconstructed and dedicated as a city street, and the turn lane at North Main Street and Exchange will be widened. The east-west alley between North Locust and North Walnut Street also will be vacated and used as a private drive.

The jail expansion is being completed without increasing property taxes, with fees from the expanded landfill near Cortland expected to pay much of the cost.

Human Relations Commission discusses demonstrations

DeKALB – Designated places in the city to hold peaceful demonstrations was an idea floated Tuesday during the Human Relations Commission’s monthly meeting.

In addition to representatives from the city and local police department, 5th Ward Alderman Kate Noreiko was on hand, adding to the discussion.

“The spot that immediately came to my mind was the northeast corner of [Route] 38 and First [Street], because it’s kind of an open spot and it’s already – somewhat informally – used for that,” Noreiko said.

The alderman also suggested the library could be optimal. At least one commissioner suggested that any one of the city’s more than three-dozen parks could be a site.

Members of the seven-member commission, which serves as an advisory committee to the city of DeKalb, continued talk of First Amendment freedoms at the meeting. The discussion was a continuation of the diversity dialogues that the commission helped sponsor with Northern Illinois University last month.

Talk of peaceful assembly continues even though a proposed ordinance to have DeKalb establish an unlawful assembly law was withdrawn

last month. The proposal, which came from Police Chief Gene Lowery, created a firestorm of controversy.

The Human Relations Commission was among the people and groups that opposed the proposal.

Commissioners were told by Lauren Stott, who serves as city liaison to HRC, and Deputy Police Chief John Petragallo that rules and procedures were already in place for groups that apply to the city for permits to gather or hold events that would have an impact on residents.

But members of the commission also wanted to know Tuesday whether the city would be ready for spontaneous demonstrations, especially on

the part of students who may want to express themselves on particular issues.

“I believe that young people are really preparing themselves to challenge the status quo,” Commissioner Robert Williams said.

Petragallo said police have already been faced with those types of situations – although not often – and have procedures and training to deal with them.

“What we’ll do immediately is approach the group ... and communicate with them to try do [their demonstration] in the safest way possible, while still allowing them to accomplish their mission,” the deputy chief said.

DeKalb mayor, AmeriCorps volunteers help Salvation Army Food Pantry

DeKALB – Weija Chang wasn’t quite sure how to begin her career after she graduated from the University of Illinois with a sociology degree in 2013.

So she decided to spend a year volunteering with the Northern Illinois Food Bank, through the AmeriCorps VISTA program.

“It’s been an experience that has been valuable,” said Chang, who lives in Naperville. “Sometimes, when you graduate, you can’t find a job right away and you don’t know exactly what you want to do. Sociology is so broad. I was kind of like, ‘Where do I go next?’”

The food bank provides hunger relief services in 13 counties, including DeKalb. The organization is partnered with 15 food pantries, a soup kitchen and other organizations throughout DeKalb County, such as other nonprofit agencies and schools.

Chang usually works behind the scenes writing grants, marketing, initiating community outreach and more, but Tuesday found her at the DeKalb Salvation Army with DeKalb Mayor John Rey, volunteering from 9 a.m. to noon at the food pantry in honor of National Mayors’ Day of Recognition for Service.

Pantry is volunteer-run and serves more than 2,000 people a month, according to its website. The mayor said he was impressed to see firsthand the work the nonprofit does.

“It’s rewarding,” Rey said. “Being able to see that we are meeting a need in the community is gratifying.”

Chang chose to volunteer specifically within the hunger relief area for a year because she said she was shocked to learn how many people were in need of the services.

“When I was looking for a job, I volunteered at my local food pantry and it really opened my eyes to what was going on in the community and how many people are food insecure,” she said. “A lot of people don’t know where their next meal

is, or they’re making really difficult choices, like, ‘Do I pay rent this month, or buy groceries?’ ” The AmeriCorps VISTA program doesn’t require relocation and has a shorter mandatory service time than some of AmeriCorps’ other programs.

Chang said some of her favorite parts

about the experience are being able to learn more about the community, gain new skills and narrow the scope of her job hunt.

“It has helped me focus in more on what I want to do and where I want to go,” Chang said. “And at the same time, I’m getting a lot of valuable experience.”

According to the news release, the victim reported that he was delivering food to an address at Building No. 4 on the property when he was approached from behind by a man wielding what appeared to be a handgun. The man took the food from the delivery driver, then ran off headed south-

west, police said.

No one was injured.

The suspect was described as male, about 5 feet 6 inches tall, wearing black pants and a dark blue hooded sweatshirt, police said.

DeKalb police are investigating, and there is no imminent threat to public safety,

police said.

Sycamore Park District to host public hearing on Action 2020 projects SYCAMORE – The park district will host a public hearing April 13 to discuss potential designs for a new recreation campus as part of the district’s long-range Action 2020 plan.

The Action 2020 plans will cost about $13 million. Voters approved a property tax referendum in November that will allow the taxing body to issue about $9 million in bonds for the project.

In December, architectural manager Caius Jennison of Farnsworth Group presented sketches of possible site and floor plans for the projects.

Once the schematic plans are approved by the Park District Board of Commissioners, the project will move into the design phase and commissioners will put the project out to bid for contractors, according to the news release.

SYCAMORE – Businesses along State Street in downtown Sycamore could begin sprouting outdoor cafés starting May 1.

The City Council on Monday unanimously approved a sidewalk café pilot program, allowing businesses with the available sidewalk space to serve customers outdoors during a trial period.

“I’m very confident that we won’t have any problems along the way,” Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy said.

“But ... we’ll be able to be flexible enough to adjust to any issues that we run into that could need some fine-tuning or tweaking moving forward.”

Taxco Restaurant will lead the way in establishing the city’s first sidewalk café, although other businesses also can apply for permits, City Manager Brian Gregory said.

After agreeing there would be no live entertainment after 11 p.m. outside the restaurant, council members agreed it was time to move forward with the plan, which was first brought to the council last summer.

Until now, the only obstacle has been determining whether the state would allow the city to build along

Route 64.

A recent letter from the Illinois Department of Transportation, however, confirmed that all property beyond the outside edges of the traffic lanes on Route 64 is in the city’s jurisdiction.

Permits will cost businesses a onetime $200 application fee, and a $50 to $100 annual use fee based on their building’s size. Each permit will be valid for a year and must be granted by the city manager with the advice of the architectural review committee, police chief and director of building and engineering.

“I’d like to give it a try,” 2nd Ward Alderman Chuck Stowe said. “It is a trial. Let’s see what happens. If we have complaints, we can stop in the middle and say no.”

Participating businesses with the appropriate permits will be allowed to serve alcohol without food, and monitor access to areas where liquor is served.

“I think it’s something that will be here to stay and will enhance our downtown and those merchants who want to take advantage of it,” Mundy said.

The pilot program is scheduled to run May 1 to Oct. 16, with discussion on whether to permanently adopt the policies planned for the fall.

45-ton beam falls on Illinois construction crew, killing 1

DES PLAINES – Federal officials are investigating two companies after a construction worker was killed and three others were injured in Des Plaines.

The accident happened about 3 a.m.

Tuesday when a 40-ton steel bridge beam fell on the workers as they tried to remove it at Interstate 90. Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials said the beam rolled from a pier support while workers cut steel bracing it.

OSHA officials said it has opened an investigation into the deceased worker’s employer, Omega Demolition Corp. of Elgin, and the general contractor, Judlau Contracting Inc. of New York. Neither company immediately responded to calls and emails seeking comment.

Des Plaines fire officials said three workers were treated and released from hospitals. The fourth was pronounced dead at a hospital.

SPRINGFIELD – Trained pharmacists in Illinois soon will be able to dispense the overdose reversal drug naloxone without a prescription.

Regulators announced Monday that a short web-based training program is available to pharmacists who want to help reduce deaths from heroin and painkillers. The change results from a state law passed last year. The legislation allows pharmacists to dispense naloxone kits to people at risk of overdose, their family members and friends, first responders and school nurses.

Naloxone also is known by the brand name Narcan. It can be given by injection or as a nasal spray and does not create a high or have major side effects.

It can reverse potentially fatal overdoses from opioid painkillers and heroin. In 2014, Illinois experienced more than 1,700 deaths from such overdoses.

MILWAUKEE– Republican Ted Cruz stormed to a commanding victory in Wisconsin on Tuesday, denting front-runner Donald Trump’s chances of capturing the GOP nomination before the party’s convention. For Sanders, Wisconsin was the latest in a string of victories that have given him an incentive to keep competing against Clinton. But he still trails her in the pledged delegate count and has so far been unable to persuade superdelegates – the party officials who can back any candidate – to drop their allegiance to the former secretary of state and back his campaign.

The results in Wisconsin make it likely both parties’ primaries will continue deep into the spring, draping front-runners Trump and Clin-

ton in uncertainty and preventing both from fully setting their sights on the general election.

For Sanders, Wisconsin was favorable territory, with an overwhelming white electorate and liberal pockets of voters, and the Vermont senator’s victory gives him a fresh burst of momentum.

Because Democrats award delegates proportionally, Sanders and Clinton will both emerge from Tuesday’s contest with more delegates.

Heading into Wisconsin, Clinton had 1,243 to Sanders’ 980 based on primaries and caucuses. When including superdelegates, the party officials who can back any candidate, Clinton holds a much wider lead – 1,712 to Sanders’ 1,011. It takes 2,383 delegates to win the Democratic nomination.

Clinton’s campaign has cast her lead as nearly insurmountable. Yet Sanders’ continued presence in the race has become an irritant for the former secretary of state, keeping her from turning her attention to the general election.

According to exit polls, Sanders has excited voters in Wisconsin, with more than half of Democratic primary-goers saying the senator inspires them more about the future of the country. But three-quarters of Democratic voters say Clinton has realistic policies.

No need to reject downtown art parade Support for the arts in downtown DeKalb runs so deep that business owners and City Council members are willing to support an arts parade – so long as it doesn’t go through the heart of downtown DeKalb.

At a DeKalb City Council meeting last week, some merchants complained that closing Lincoln Highway between First and Fourth streets for 45 minutes on Saturday, May 7, for the ARTigras parade would be bad for business – even though the event would bring a crowd of spectators to the area and most people prefer to park their vehicles off Lincoln anyway.

That doesn’t make a lot of sense to us.

There is a concerted effort underway to emphasize the arts activity going on in and around the downtown area. The ARTigras event, which will be held for the second year in a row in May, is one example.

The event features artists working both on the Northern Illinois University campus and in downtown DeKalb, and this year will extend over two days.

Another is the DeKalb Area Arts Council’s project to create an Arts, Culture and Entertainment corridor, commonly referred to as the ACE corridor, which will showcase 30 galleries, museums and other sites between the NIU Convocation Center and downtown and 45 arts-related businesses in the area.

The implication is that these cultural activities make downtown a vibrant and special part of the city.

We wouldn’t suggest that the people in a neighborhood should have no say in what activities are held there.

However, as the city’s traditional focal point, downtown is usually the site of parades, whether it is for DeKalb High School’s homecoming, Memorial Day and, yes, the ARTigras festival, which held a downtown parade last year.

It also is in the heart of the city’s arts corridor.

This year, however, in response to complaints about a short road closure, ARTigras organizers decided they were OK with the not-ready-for-prime-time treatment, agreeing to move their parade to Locust Street, which will still probably make it difficult for people to access some of the parking in the area, particularly the Van Buer Plaza lot.

The DeKalb community’s arts offerings are one of its strengths, and it is those arts and cultural opportunities and events – events such as ARTigras – that bring customers to the area in the first place.

The decision to reject the parade to avoid closing Lincoln Highway for 45 minutes on a Saturday afternoon flies in the face of that.

Perhaps instead of fighting the plans for a parade that could bring added exposure to both the local arts community and to downtown DeKalb, business owners should embrace it.

Events that bring people downtown might be a temporary inconvenience, but they also are a great source of potential customers.

Landfills could manage the disposal with relative safety and the problems faced by residents would be alleviated.

When I approached the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency with this idea a couple of years ago, they indicated it would not be considered. Since then, no new processes have been developed and the stockpile has increased exponentially.

the ideas he or she meant to convey – low taxes, small government, resistance to social change. But a word that once encoded a definite set of values and beliefs now seems utterly bereft of internal cohesion, less a name for an ideology than for a mood: surly, nasty and put-upon.

They don’t like the rest of us. Nor do they seem to like each other all that much, feuding with a bitterness and constancy that would make even the Hatfields and McCoys tell them to tone it down. Yes, ideology still gets lip service, but its importance has become secondary, if that.

How else to explain that people who once considered Christian faith their foundation stone have coalesced behind a candidate who can’t name a Bible verse? Or that people who once valued a grown-up, clear-eyed approach to foreign policy support

candidates who want to “carpet bomb” the Middle East and pull out of NATO? Or that people who once decried “a culture of victimization” now whine all day about how they are victims of biased media, bullying gays and political correctness?

A few days ago, New York Times columnist David Brooks professed to be excited by this act of self-immolation – “This is a wonderful moment to be a conservative,” he gushed – because after this debacle, conservatives will be able to reinvent themselves, unencumbered by “existing mental categories and presuppositions.” Like when a comic book or movie franchise gets rebooted, I suppose. One had the sense of a man desperately painting lipstick on a pig.

The right is rotting from within, putrefying on its own grievance and rage. It seems bereft of core values and beliefs unless you count its determination to always oppose anything the left supports, up to and including motherhood and sunshine. That’s as close to principle as conservatives come these days.

Given the way they have spurned their party’s 2012 election “autopsy” report, which called for greater inclusion and a gentler tone, one wonders if these folks are capable of, or even interested in, the reinvention Brooks predicts. Conservatives do not need to be “liberal-lite” – no ideology has a monopoly on good ideas. On the other hand, when your base is the Ku Klux Klan, Ted Nugent and people sucker-punching strangers at rallies, it’s a sign that a little self-reflection is overdue.

I had a smart aleck answer 20 years ago. But it occurs to me that if they asked that now, I’d have to request clarification. My worldview hasn’t changed.

But I no longer have any idea what “conservative” means.

Win or lose, Sanders won’t go away after election

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is waging an improbable presidential campaign, but he won’t disappear after this election. Nor will his followers: Perhaps they’ll be called the Bernie Brigade or Sanderistas.

The socialist probably has no more than a 10 percent shot at winning the Democratic nomination – and that’s if something bad happens to Hillary Clinton or, less likely, if after winning in Wisconsin this week, he scores a huge upset in New York two weeks later and transforms the race.

Yet Sanders, who for the left wing was a consolation choice after Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren wouldn’t run, has a message that will continue to resonate, especially among the multitudes of young supporters.

The clarity and coherence of the campaign have surprised even those who sharply disagree with him.

“Bernie has run a much better campaign than I ever thought he would,” says Trent Lott, the former Senate Republican leader and Mississippi

conservative.

Sanders is setting much of the Democratic agenda, forcing Clinton to move left by opposing the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the Keystone pipeline and by frequently assailing Wall Street.

Even Republicans have picked up some of his populist rhetoric.

If, as the odds-makers now predict, Clinton wins the nomination and the presidency, Sanders, with two years left in his Senate term, will be looking over her left shoulder. If Democrats, including the next president or the next Democratic Senate leader (likely Chuck Schumer of New York), cozy up to Wall Street, expect a Sanders-Warren barrage. The so-called bank bailout in 2008 probably prevented the economy from going over the cliff. But Sanders has reinforced a public sense that bankers are making out like bandits while Main Street struggles.

One virtual certainty: the next Treasury secretary won’t come from Wall Street.

Sanders also has galvanized public outrage over Supreme Court decisions that unleashed a flood of big money into politics. Most Americans agree

with him that the U.S. system of money in politics is corrupt. Both President Bill Clinton and Barack Obama paid lip service to campaign-finance reform and then put it on the back burner.

Sanders’ campaign ensures that another President Clinton won’t have that luxury.

Some of his radical notions, including sky-high taxes on the wealthy and a totally government-run health care system, are nonstarters. But the public has moved closer to his view on economic fairness, and his call for free public higher education is a debate that will endure.

Sanders has attracted extraordinary support from young voters, beating Clinton by huge margins. These Americans have grown up in tough times, with more limited opportunities.

They’re skeptical about the establishment and the socialist label doesn’t have the negative connotation it does for many older Americans.

The question is whether Sanders will keep these young people politically energized. The last such cause-centric pied piper was Eugene McCarthy in 1968, though he basically checked out

of Democratic politics after he lost the presidential nomination.

Katy Harriger, a political scientist at Wake Forest University who has studied the youth vote, thinks that Sanders has the capacity to keep them mobilized on issues such as campaign financing and economic inequality.

That engagement could carry to the offyear elections, when participation of young voters traditionally drops off.

“He has tapped into something very real and has credibility with a lot of these young voters,” Harriger says.

Unlike McCarthy, whose views evolved over time, Sanders has been consistently to the left for almost a half-century. Although he started in dingy basements and sparsely attended rallies for lost causes, he now has a national megaphone that he’s not likely to relinquish. He also will have more than 2 million contributors, mostly small donations, and almost 4 million have clicked “like”on his Facebook page. In today’s politics, that’s a machine.

About 20 years ago, when the syndicate that represents this column was preparing to pitch it to newspaper editors, I was called in for a meeting with the sales staff and somebody asked me this question: “Are you liberal or are you conservative?”

I said, “Yes.” I wasn’t trying to be a wiseguy.

OK, maybe a little. But I was also trying to convey my impatience with our bipolar political discourse, with the idea that I was required to pick a team. I was trying to preserve for myself the right to think a thing through and come to my own conclusion regardless of ideological branding.

But at the same time, I knew what I was being asked. When they said, “Are you liberal or are you conservative?” those words had concrete meaning, embodied real political concepts.

But that is no longer the case – at least where the latter term is concerned.

Once upon a time, when a person identified as conservative, you knew

Artists have created pictures of naked women for centuries and many of the paintings and sculptures are now displayed in museums or homes. But some collectors are more interested in “naughties,” a group of 3- to 6-inch-long bisque figurines made from about 1910 to 1940. The women were posed as if lounging on a beach. Some were made with colored bathing suits and slippers, some wore nothing but a removable lace bathing suit. The others were made for a shelf. The women had angelic tinted faces and often mohair wigs and fabric caps.

There were even mermaids, which were popular as an underwater feature in a fish tank. They represent the erotica of an earlier period. Most of the “naughties” or “nudies” were made in Germany by Hertwig & Co., Limbach or Galluba & Hoffman. A 3 1/2-inch seated lady with a tulle swimsuit made about 1910 sold at a Theriault’s auction two years ago for $684. Prices are lower in 2016.

world or are used as banks or even games. Most are made by J. Chien or Ohio Art Co., both manufacturers of toys since the 1930s. I can now afford some better globes. What should I look for?

A: Globes have been made since the days of the ancient Greeks, but probably the earliest known today is a Nuremberg globe. It was finished in 1493, but soon became outdated because it had an empty ocean where the American continents would soon be reported. You probably can find many American globes made in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The first U. S. globe maker was James Wilson and he cleverly made his globes an inch larger than the British competition, advertising that his were bigger and better. Look for 1930s to 1940s globes made

by Rand McNally, Weber Costello, Cram, Hammond or Replogle. After World War II, the boundaries of countries changed so often that it makes it easy to date your globes.

Today, changing boundaries and country names are an even greater problem for globemakers, but they help the collector looking for vintage globes.

A: In 1871 Franz Detleff Goebel and his son, William, founded F. & W. Goebel in Oeslau (now Rodental), Germany, to make slates, slate pencils and toy marbles. Weather puts halt to DeKalb-Sycamore game after 3 innings

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Neither DeKalb softball coach Jeff Davis nor Sycamore coach Jill Carpenter seemed surprised when the game between the two schools was called off after three innings with the Barbs ahead 3-1.

In fact, each coach said they didn’t believe the game should have been played in the first place.

“In my personal opinion, I don’t think the game should have been started,” Davis said.

A date for the continuation of the game has not been set. The DeKalb athletics Twitter account said a date would be announced today.

Carpenter said she found it inter-

esting the Spartans’ baseball game at Hononegah was called off earlier in the afternoon.

“It was too cold for baseball to play today, yet we’re out here trying to tough it out,” Carpenter said. “I don’t know what the deal is with that. But it’s tough. This is a conference game, a rivalry game. Yeah, it doesn’t have to be 75 and sunny to play it, but this is not fun for anyone.”

Izzy Odom was in the circle for the Spartans and allowed four hits. Morgan Newport struck out four pitching for DeKalb, allowing just one hit.

The next scheduled game between the teams is April 21 at Sycamore.

“We wanted this,” Parillo said with the close win. “Now we got Sycamore, then we got the Pepsi Showdown, then we got Morris, then we got the Pepsi Showdown. We got six more games by next Saturday. We’re busy. We need these things. This is the way we want to play. These kind of games get you ready for playoffs.”

Alyssa Wagner picked up a win at No. 1 singles, 15-21, 23-21, 21-18, while fellow senior Kerstin Thelen won 21-13, 21-18 at No. 3 for the Barbs (1-3).

“I told the girls before today I wanted to start out strong and be winning after doubles,” coach Duane Cowley said. “We did that, taking three of the

five to start. I was really pleased with the strong performances we got from our top five singles players. That was very helpful in getting this win.”

DeKALB – Kaneland junior Holly Collingbourne called it the most dramatic goal of her career.

While the goal was unorthodox, it was enough to give Kaneland a 1-0 win at DeKalb on a wet and cold Tuesday night, keeping the Knights undefeated on the season.

“We’ve been playing a lot of teams that we’ve been crushing, so it’s nice to have some good competition,” Collingbourne said.

The high-scoring Kaneland offense had few opportunities against DeKalb, but with less than 18 minutes remaining, Collingbourne had an unassuming shot toward DeKalb goalkeeper Meghan Hanson. It looked like Hanson stopped it initially, but the ball squirmed out and went between her legs – slowly crossing the goal line for the only score of the game.

“I definitely thought, ‘Oh shoot, the keeper is going to stop it,’ ” Collingbourne said. “I was praying it would go in and it just slowly rolled in. I know our coaches were telling us to shoot. If it’s on the ground, it will skip (because of the wet field) and always press the goal and take shots because you never know what’s going to happen.”

The Knights, who hadn’t played since their 4-0 win over Rosary on March 23, have been steamrolling teams this season – improving to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in Northern Illinois Big 12 East Division while outscoring opponents, 23-0. Morsch strikes out 17 in H-BR win

sports@daily-chronicle.com BIG ROCK – Jacob Morsch made sure to bring the heat on a day when Mother Nature didn’t supply much warmth.

Morsch led the Hinckley-Big Rock baseball team to its first win of the season, 6-3, over Hiawatha. Morsch struck out 17 batters in six innings and did not allow a hit through the first five.

“I knew I had a no-hitter going, but I walked too many guys, so I really wasn’t even thinking about it,” Morsch said. “We hung with some of the bigger, tougher teams that we’ve played previously. I know that we are capable of winning our conference.”

Royals coach Brandon Jackson said he was pleased his starting pitcher and his team’s offensive effort.

“He didn’t want to come out there at the end, but he was throwing on a sore leg,” Jackson said. “We had been struggling up to this point offensively, so we really just tried to focus on getting the ball in play.”

The Royals (1-4) put the ball in play despite striking out 12 times

over six innings. They mustered up six hits and reached base on two errors.

A third Hiawatha error in the game turned a double into a triple.

Hiawatha coach Sean Donnelly said he was glad the Hawks (0-2) kept things close against Morsch and the Royals.

“We will look at the positives today,” Donnelly said. “The fact that we struck out as much as we did and kept it to a three-run game. (Morsch) is one of the better conference pitchers and we still managed to bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh.”

The nasty spring weather has also taken its toll on Donnelly’s Hawks.

“The fact that we have only been able to get two games in really makes it hard to get into any sort of a rhythm. It takes time to figure out a lineup and to figure out how we can put our kids in the best position to win.”

Hawks pitcher Jake Mlodzianowski struck out 11 Royals over five innings pitched.

“I like to try and pitch away for swings and misses,” Mlodzianowski said. “I just try and look to my teammates and see how they can help me and how I can help them.”

Naegele breaks single-season HR record with walk-off homer

sports@daily-chronicle.com Northern Illinois catcher Emily Naegele went into the record book in style.

Naegele broke the Huskies’ single-season home run record with a walk-off solo homer in the bottom of the seventh in a 5-4 victory over Ball State in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday at Mary M. Bell Field.

It was the second game-ending home run of the day for the Huskies, who improved to 25-10 overall and 6-2 in Mid-American Conference West Division.

In Game 1, NIU sophomore Haley Wroten hit a pinch-hit, game-ending grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to give the Huskies their 10-0 win. It was the second home run of the season for the sophomore.

Freshman pitcher Alex Frenz continued her strong season with a dominating performance in Game 1 against the Cardinals. She threw a one-hitter with no walks and eight strikeouts.

The Huskies gave her plenty of run support early, scoring four in the first inning and two in the fourth before capping it with Wroten’s grand slam in the sixth.

Katie Lamich went 3 for 4 with two runs and Jessica Rio added two hits and two runs in the win.

a three-run double by Alaynie Woollard, who finished 3 for 3 with three RBIs. Naegele also added an RBI single in the first inning.

Ball State (17-20 overall, 3-5 in MAC West) crept back and eventually tied the score at 4 in the top of the seventh inning. However, Naegele led off the bottom half of the inning with a homer to left centerfield, which gives her 16 on the season. Teammate Kayti Grable broke the record last season with 15 home runs in the season.

Frenz got the win in the second game by pitching three innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits. She improved to 12-3 in the circle this season.

The Huskies will play at Akron (1816-1 overall, 2-3-1 in MAC East) in a three-game series this weekend, starting at 2 p.m. Friday. Akron’s series finale against Central Michigan was called after the fifth inning because of snow when the score was tied at 4.

NEW YORK – The NFL has picked Twitter to stream its Thursday games.

When the league negotiated its latest deal for the Thursday package, it decided to sell the streaming rights separately for an “over the top” broadcast. This past season, it partnered with Yahoo to stream a game from London that took place on a Sunday morning in the United States.

Only the 10 Thursday night games on CBS and NBC will be streamed through Twitter under a one-year agreement, the NFL announced Tuesday. They will be free worldwide on all devices through the Twitter platform.

Viewers will not need to be registered Twitter users.

The NFL Network-only Thursday games are not part of the deal.

The league wants to experiment with digital broadcasts to see how they might fit into future strategies. In the meantime, this also offers a new revenue source with digital companies eager to get involved in live sports.

Twitter is paying more than $10 million along with providing promotional opportunities as part of the

deal, according to a person familiar with the agreement. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the companies are not releasing the financial details.

CBS and NBC are paying $45 million a game for the Thursday package.

So far, the audience for NFL streams has been significantly smaller than that for traditional television.

The Yahoo broadcast of the Bills-Jaguars game from London in October averaged a worldwide audience of about 2.4 million. A Jets-Dolphins matchup from London earlier that month, which started at the same time, averaged more than quadruple that in the U.S. alone with 9.9 million viewers on CBS. The Bill-Jaguars game was available on TV only in the teams’ home markets, so fans in the rest of the country who wanted to see it had to watch the stream. In contrast, the Thursday night broadcasts are nationally televised.

That London game took place at a time of day when American fans might be less likely to find themselves in front of a TV. For prime time, that isn’t as much of an issue.

Porter suspended after run-in with police

Northern Illinois men’s basketball player Laytwan Porter has been suspended indefinitely after he was pulled over by police while the guard was driving with a suspended or revoked license and had marijuana in the vehicle on March 30 – two days after the Huskies were eliminated from the Vegas 16 tournament.

According to court records, Porter had less than 2.5 grams of marijuana, along with a baggie, a glass jar and a cigar cutter. His court date will be May 6.

ANAHEIM, Calif. – It took all of one game for the Cubs to show what everybody else had been talking about when it comes to the length and ability of this upgraded lineup.

Even before a dominant Jake Arrieta took the mound in Monday’s season opening victory over the Angels, the Cubs had a lead on Dexter Fowler’s leadoff double and Anthony Rizzo’s two-out run-scoring single. By the time the night was over, the Cubs had a 9-0 victory on the strength of, yes, Arrieta, but also a deep and balanced lineup that produced 11 hits, seven walks and 17 total bases.

“Putting one on the board in the first inning’s huge, especially to start the season off in a series like this against a good team on the road,” Arrieta said. “Huge night from our offense.

Incredible at-bats. That’s the tone that we want to set early.”

Fowler reached four times. Everybody but Kyle Schwarber reached at least once. Miguel Montero hit a tworun homer in the sixth. And Matt Szczur, the former Villanova football

Eggs come out of their shell

Today, eggs are back in fashion after many years of being banned from the table by health professionals. In moderation, of course. And with a modern twist. For instance, rather than a breakfast of bacon and eggs, health conscious folks mash an avocado well with a few drops of lemon or lime juice to help keep out the lumps and keep it bright green. Then they spread the mashed avocado on toast, and top it with an egg, fried or poached in olive oil, the healthy fat, rather than butter.

Besides the usual preparations, eggs – fried, poached, scrambled, hard- and softboiled – are the main event in a number of recipes.

Leafing through piles of old cookbooks, I found omelets, frittata, strata, tarts, quiches, soufflés and French toast.

And then more subtly tucked or whisked into other classics like Cobb salad, pasta alla carbonara, grilled salmon with egg and chive sauce; New England potato salad with eggs and pickles; tiramisu, slivered raw asparagus salad, huevos rancheros.

In one old classic from a vintage book shop, I looked up the basics “how-to’s.”

Tucked between the lines was a recipe that may have been a regional favorite in the early decades of the last century. Asparagus with Egg and Bacon.

It was obvious as I read that the writer assumed the cook already knew how to prepare asparagus “perfectly” and could poach or fry an egg without further instructions. Oh, yes, and cook bacon well done without burning. Maybe he wanted the reader to look up the methods right in the pages of this 875-page volume.

A cook should feel free to substitute dill for the tarragon or mixing the two together.

10 eggs 2 teaspoons cold water 1 teaspoon dried tarragon or 2 teaspoons fresh chopped tarragon sea salt, fresh ground black pepper, Tabasco, to taste 5 tablespoons unsalted butter 3 ounces whipped cream cheese

Crack eggs into a medium bowl; beat together until with the water, tarragon, salt, pepper, and Tabasco, until the yellow and white of the eggs are completely blended.

Heat a large heavy nonstick skillet. Pour in the egg mixture and reduce the heat to low. Continue to cook, scraping the bottom of the pan with a rubber or wooden spatula, folding the eggs over on themselves until they form moist curds.

This should take about 3 minutes. The eggs will look shiny and runny in spots.

Add the cream cheese. Cook, folding the eggs and cream cheese over the heat for about 15 seconds. Remove from the heat and continue to fold the eggs until the cream cheese is melted and coats the eggs.

Serve this right away.

MAPLE-CINNAMON FRENCH TOAST

Melt half the butter in a large, heavy, stick-free skillet over medium heat. Years ago, a friend took me to one of his favorite restaurants in New York City. Dinner was fantastic, but what stayed with me most was dessert: maple budino. One bite and I was smitten.

The pudding was luxuriously fatty and creamy, and the flavor was incredibly clean: maple and maybe a little floral vanilla. Budino is simply Italian for pudding, but this was unlike any pudding I’d ever eaten. For the record, I am a pudding fan. I grew up having “pudding parties” with my sister, the two of us making pudding out of the box, lightly scorching every saucepan in the house over the years.

Later, I learned how easy it is to make a quick stovetop pudding from scratch. Simply follow this formula (which is easily scaled up): 1 cup milk plus 1 tablespoon cornstarch plus 1 to 2 tablespoons sugar plus flavorings (vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon, etc.). The trick to a smooth stovetop pudding is to whisk the cornstarch and sugar first in the cold saucepan to break up lumps, then whisk in the milk. Heat over medium and allow to boil gently for 2 to 3 minutes, constantly whisking. Pour into ramekins and chill.

Making your own puddings means you control the ingredients. Since milk already is a little sweet, you don’t need a ton of extra sugar. And you can slowly reduce the amount of sugar over time, so your family grows accustomed to a healthier dessert. Fat, too, is under your control.

You can use whole milk for restaurant-creamy results or skim milk if you don’t mind a less-lush texture in exchange for a skinny calorie count.

I also love baked custard puddings.

They require more effort, but they are more likely to feel at home at a dinner party. This maple budino is a baked

custard, but feel free to make a stovetop version using my formula above.

Maple Budino

Start to finish: 1 hour (15 minutes active), plus cooling Servings: 6 1 cup 2 percent milk 3/4 cup whole milk 1/2 vanilla bean pod, scraped 2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar 1/4 cup maple syrup, plus extra 1/4 teaspoon table salt 2 eggs Flaked sea salt Heat the oven to 325 degrees F.

In a medium saucepan over medium, combine both milks. Heat until they just come to a simmer. Add the vanilla bean, brown sugar, maple syrup and salt, whisking until uniform.

In a large bowl, beat the eggs until smooth and pale yellow. Drizzle about 1/4 cup of the hot milk mixture into the eggs, whisking all the time. Once mixed, add another 1/4 cup of milk, again whisking.

Add the remaining milk mixture, and mix gently just until well combined. Remove and discard the vanilla bean. Pour into six 4-ounce ramekins.

Carefully set the ramekins into a large baking dish with sides higher than the ramekins. Pour boiling water gently into the baking dish, adding enough to fill halfway

up the sides of the ramekins. Be careful not to splash water into the ramekins. Carefully place the baking dish in the oven and bake until the budinos are set (the centers will still be jiggly), 30 to 40 minutes.

Once the budinos are cooked, immediately remove the ramekins from the hot water bath. Let them cool a few minutes, then refrigerate to finish setting, at least 1 hour.

Serve with a drizzle of maple syrup and a few flecks of salt, if desired.

Nutrition information per serving: 130 calories; 30 calories from fat (23 percent of total calories); 3.5 g fat (1.5 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 80 mg cholesterol; 160 mg sodium; 22 g carbohydrate; 0 g fiber; 20 g sugar; 4 g protein.

In 1941, no one in DeKalb County used illegal drugs. Or at least, was caught using illegal drugs, according to an article in the Daily Chronicle in July 1942.

“DeKalb County has been free from arrests for violations of the narcotic laws for the year, beginning Jan. 1, 1941, and ending Dec. 31, 1941, it was announced at the state’s attorney’s office in Sycamore yesterday,” the report said. “An officer of the narcotic division of the federal department made an inspection of the records of the state’s attorney and also those at the county jail, but could find nothing that would indicate violation of the narcotic law in the county.”

The article went on to mention that rumors circulating at the courthouse about “marihuana cigarets” being sold “either in DeKalb or Sycamore” were investigated by police found to be unsubstantiated.

I was able to find at least one newspaper report of drug use in 1941, but it appears that no one was arrested in that case. After a railroad worker was stabbed in September 1941, police found “some dried marijuana weed, ready for smoking” among the 200 workers who had been working on the Milwaukee line at Kirkland that summer.

Looking back through newspaper archives, it’s easy to trace how attitudes about marijuana have changed over the years. For me, it was even more interesting to see how the Chronicle’s coverage of marijuana and other drug issues changed through the years.

From my cursory research, it appears that sometime after the now, legendary propaganda film “Reefer Madness” was released in the late 1930s, the Chronicle started to take a keen interest in the subject. In the summer of 1938, no one in the Chronicle office knew what marijuana looked like.

“Chronicle will soon have full data concerning the dread marijuana weed,” reads a headline in the paper from Sept.

“There seems to be considerable confusion as to what the deadly marijuana weed, the ingredient of the ‘reefer’ cigarettes which are one of the worst forms of narcotics, really is and looks like,” the editorial piece said. “The confusion, apparently, arises from the fact that the plant is sometimes called wild hemp and there are several forms of vegetation which are given that title in this region.”

The newspaper vowed to set the record straight.

“In order that the public may be informed as to the appearance of the marijuana, The Chronicle will, when its staff photographer Edward Raymond gets back from his vacation, try to have specimens of the drug plant adequately photographed and pictures printed of it so that farmers can know what it is and be on the lookout for it.”

On Sept. 17, the Chronicle printed a number of photos of wild marijuana growing in the county.

During World War II, growing hemp for rope was big business in DeKalb

County. War Hemp Industries Inc. had facilities in Kirkland and Shabbona, where workers were paid 70 to 75 cents an hour. After the war, demand for hemp dried up, and War Hemp Industries of Kirkland sold all of its assets, including 11 buildings, at public auction in July 1946, according to advertisements from the time.

By the late 1960s, marijuana news appeared regularly in the Chronicle, a trend that continues to this day.

Between the minor arrests and major busts over the years, there have been some spectacular and amusing reports in the Daily Chronicle.

Some examples: • In December 1974, six people were arrested in a drug bust, including a member of the DeKalb City Council (7th Ward Alderman David Jaffe) and then-treasurer of the Northern Illinois University Student Association (Kenneth Depperman). During a 1975 court hearing, Herbert J. Andreen II, an undercover Illinois Bureau of Investigations special agent, testified about a meeting in Depperman’s office in the Holmes Student Center.

Andreen’s account of the meeting included smoking at least two joints, during which time the treasurer took breaks to discuss student art acquisitions and take a phone call from a news reporter to explain his position on the decriminalization of marijuana. The agent also testified that the student body leader bragged about selling drugs to two city aldermen and being “well-connected in town.” (A defense attorney asked the special agent how he “simulated” smoking marijuana during this interaction and essentially implied that the agent had partaken of the drug during the course of the investigation.)

• In June 1985, Chronicle writer Tom Zeeh wrote a story with the headline “Is city hall going to pot?” After receiving a tip, the reporter said he found five knee-high marijuana plants growing outside the windows of the public works building. Photographer Scott Savel got a photo of the plants outside the Municipal Building before they were destroyed by police. The funniest part of this story is that it wasn’t the first time this had happened.

“As I can recall, a couple of other times somebody has said we’ve got marijuana growing and sure enough we go out and look and there’s a plant or two,” Lt. Charles Beierlotzer told Zeeh for the article. “Somebody comes along and plants a seed and as the summer come along it grows. That’s probably what happened in this particular case.”

He works with area high schools promoting business and manufacturing careers to students in a variety of settings. Fogle shared tips for success and the importance of leadership and teamwork in the workforce.

presented “work ready” certificates to the class and recognized the presenters who worked with the class throughout the past eight weeks. Presenters included Amy Horn from Kishwaukee Educational Consortium, Lynette Spencer from Adventure Works, Kristen Brynteson from Northern Illinois University, Kris Mulso from the G-K School District, Shane Tredup from Custom Aluminum Products, Bruce Griffith from KEC, Joe Burgess III from Normal West High School and Liz Bockman from Everyday Etiquette.

Simple acts prevent blood clots Dear Dr. K: A friend of mine recently developed a blood clot in his leg after a long flight. I travel a lot for work, so this has me worried. Is there any way to prevent this type of thing?

Dear Reader: A blood clot that forms deep inside a leg vein, known as deepvein thrombosis (DVT), can cause pain, swelling and redness in the affected limb.

But the real threat happens if the clot breaks off and travels to the lungs.

Known as a pulmonary embolism, this can lead to sudden death. (I’ve put an illustration of this process on my website, www.askdoctork.com.)

Clots tend to form in blood when the blood is not moving much. They form in still ponds, but not in babbling brooks.

Ordinarily, as you walk around, your leg muscles squeeze your veins and keep blood in the leg veins flowing back to the heart. If you are inactive for many hours, blood flow in the veins of your legs may slow so much clots form.

If you have to sit for several hours at a time on a plane or train, the following tips may help prevent DVT: • Get up and walk around every hour.

I do this religiously every time I fly or travel by train. I always get an aisle seat so I don’t disturb my seatmates.

• While sitting, flex and extend your ankles and knees every once in a while.

• Avoid crossing your legs. That pinches off even more of the flow of blood in your leg veins.

• Change positions often while seated.

• Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Learn to recognize the signs of DVT. The affected area may be tender or

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff painful, swollen, red and warm to the touch. If these symptoms linger for more than a few hours, call your doctor for advice.

It’s very unusual for a person to develop DVT in both legs at the same time. So the signs of DVT are particularly important to bring to your doctor’s attention when they’re just in one leg.

Treating a DVT typically includes injections of an anti-clotting drug such as heparin, followed by additional anti-clotting drugs taken by mouth. People with less serious cases might need only anti-clotting pills. More serious cases might require powerful clot-dissolving medications given intravenously in a hospital.

If you ever have had a blood clot before, you may well be at increased risk for getting another one. So all of the advice I’ve given above goes double for you.

Very early in my medical training, I saw several patients die from blood clots in the legs that traveled to the lungs. One of them had been on a long airplane ride the day before. I don’t know if he had taken any precautions – he couldn’t tell me.

It made me decide if there were any simple things I could do to protect myself from a similar fate, I would do them. I have, and you should too.

I am a single father of teenage boys. I always have played an active role in my children’s lives, physically, emotionally and financially. My older son lives with me; my younger sons live with their mother.

I am bisexual and always have been attracted to both men and women. It took me a long time to admit it to myself. I suffered from depression for many years as I struggled with my sexual identity. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with HIV. Since then, I have been on medication and live a very healthy lifestyle.

None of my children knows about my sexuality or my diagnosis. I have wanted to tell them for a while now, but I never can bring myself to do it. I’m afraid if I tell them, they’ll be ashamed of me and it will add unnecessary stress in their lives. On the other hand, I’m tired of keeping secrets. Furthermore, I worry about the possibility they could find out from someone else.

All four of us will be together for an event in a couple of months. I feel this could be a good opportunity to tell them. Or should I tell them on their own, individually? Am I selfish for wanting to tell my children? Or am I foolish for not telling them? – Keeping Secrets Dear Keeping Secrets: If your children ask you about your health or your sexual orientation, do not lie to them. However, I see no reason for you to make a blanket announcement about this now because I sincerely believe most young people do not care to know.

If you wind up partnering with another man, they will at some point begin to draw their own conclusions. If your health takes a turn for the worse, they will need to know your status. Until then, my advice is to keep mum.

What happens after that?

North produces a negative double, which shows four hearts (the unbid major) and some eight-plus points (or six or seven if he really likes his hand). He might hold five or even six hearts and only 6-9 points, too few to respond two hearts; but that is rare.

South has four potential losers: one spade (on the third round), two hearts and one club. But there are discards available on diamonds.

Yesterday, when declarer ran the heart 10, West won with his queen and persevered with spades. South won in the dummy and took three rounds of diamonds to shed dummy’s last spade. Then the contract made.

West missed a great opportunity to offer declarer a noose. He should have won the first heart trick with his ace! Then, when he led a second spade, South might have thought it couldn’t hurt to draw trumps with another finesse through East’s apparent queen. But West would have produced that queen out of his back pocket and cashed the spade 10 and club ace to defeat the contract.
