What the heck is ‘man smell’?

The family minivan was in the shop for a couple of days last week, so my wife spent some time driving my car.

After one day of driving it, she decided she needed to break out one of those “little tree” air fresheners and pull it all the way out of the package.

I guess the idea was to fumigate it. Mission accomplished.

When I got in the next morning, the air was heavy with “new car” scent. (I buy that fragrance because I like to dream.)

When I asked what was with the olfactory overdose, she said she had to drive some people somewhere that morning and the car had “man smell.”

“What the heck is man smell?” I asked.

She told me it was hard to say exactly. Apparently, it falls somewhere between body odor and cologne on the scale of smells, probably with some shoe leather mixed in there, too.

I told her, truthfully, that I’ve never noticed any such smell.

I guess it’s kind of like the way you don’t notice how your own house smells until you leave it for several days and then return.

It’s not really possible for me to take a vacation from being a man. So maybe this man smell will be something that exists only in theory for me, like the color green for someone who’s color blind.

Although it sounds to me like color-blind people are probably missing out on more than I am in not being able to identify “man smell.”

TODAY’S TALKER VIRGINIA GOVERNOR VETOES SEXUALLY EXPLICIT BOOKS BILL

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe vetoed a bill Monday that would force schools to warn parents if their children will be assigned books with sexually explicit content, saying it’s unnecessary and lacks flexibility in labeling literary works.

The Democratic governor said the bill isn’t needed because the state Board of Education is already examining such a policy. He also said curriculum management should be left to local school boards, which he said are best positioned to make decisions about their students.

“Open communication between parents and teachers is important, and school systems have an obligation to provide age-appropriate material for students,” McAuliffe said. “However, this legislation lacks flexibility and would require the label

The measure, which is backed by GOP House Speaker William Howell, was brought to the General Assembly by a Fairfax County mother who protested the use of Toni Morrison’s ‘Beloved’ in her son’s high school senior class. The 1987 novel set in the post-Civil War era includes scenes depicting sex, rape and bestiality.

The bill initially flew through the GOP-controlled House with unanimous support. But outcry from Democrats and free-speech groups grew as the bill received more attention. The 22-17 vote in the Senate means there’s likely not enough support to override the governor’s veto in that chamber.

James LaRue, director of the Office for Intellectual Freedom at the American Library Association, has said that Virginia would be the first state in the country with such a law.

Demand overwhelming; officials consider scheduling another program

DeKALB – DeKalb County Health Department officials had to pull the plug on a TV recycling event Saturday because of residents’ overwhelming participation, and county officials announced Monday that another one will be scheduled in the coming weeks.

“We tried to hold just the one-day event to collect TVs here at our site,” said Greg Maurice, DeKalb County Department of Health director of health protection. “In the past, we’ve done it, but we haven’t had that much of a response.”

The DeKalb County Solid Waste Program was offering a way for residents to get rid of TVs without having to pay to dispose of them. Haulers and recyclers charge a fee – as much as $75.

State law prohibits certain electronics, including lead-containing TVs, from being put in landfills.

The plan Saturday was to have county residents drive through a designated area of the DeKalb County Complex, 2550 N. Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb, show their identification and allow each of them to drop off up to two TVs, which were to be loaded onto a truck and hauled off.

But demand for the program proved too much, and health department officials said after consulting with DeKalb police, the event was closed because of traffic congestion. Maurice said about 275 cars passed through with as many as 1,000 TVs dropped off before the program halted.

Drop-off was to start at 9 a.m., but cars were queued up at 7 a.m., so officials started letting people unload about 8 a.m. But about 10 a.m., Maurice said, the event was stopped.

On Monday, dozens of TVs still were on pallets in the parking lot outside the health department building waiting to get hauled away.

“We would like to apologize for the frustration and inconvenience that was caused to residents,” department officials said in a news release issued Monday.

Maurice said the county could pay about $20,000 for Saturday’s event, after paying 16 cents per pound for each of the recycled units. By weight, the county expected to collect 25 tons of TVs that day. Instead, 60 tons were collected before the event was halted.

Dan Christensen, owner of Cortland-based DC Trash, said his company ended up hauling the sets away after another company decided to turn the job down. He said his workers hoped to have all of the electronics moved off the parking lot at the county complex soon.

“We got a large influx of TVs,” he said. “I don’t think we were expecting that many.”

Tony DiCapua said he made the 10-minute drive from his Sycamore home to the recycling event hoping to get rid of two TVs he no longer wants.

He said he was quickly caught in the traffic – which he said was backed up both ways down Annie Glidden Road – and then turned away.

“It would really be nice if someone could pick (TVs) up with the trash,” DiCapua said. “I think everybody would be a lot happier.”

City officials to consider long-term street, fleet and finance plans

DeKALB – Street maintenance and vehicle replacement plans need to be a priority in the upcoming budget process, and city officials will meet Tuesday to discuss long-term financial plans.

The Finance Advisory Committee is set to discuss how to best create a plan for both the upcoming budget process this year and for years to come. Two of the most important things on the radar are DeKalb’s street maintenance and fleet replacement worries, said Mike

Peddle, chairman of the committee.

“In addition, the [tax increment financing] districts will be going offline,” Peddle said. “We need to prepare for that and think about the appropriate strategy for handling any financial effects from not being able to rely on the TIFs.” When DeKalb’s two TIF districts expire, the city won’t have the extra cash to complete projects in those areas. The central area district, which includes downtown DeKalb, will expire at the end of 2020 and TIF 2 will expire in 2018.

City officials approved a change to

its fiscal year in January. Previously, DeKalb’s budget year began July 1, but the city will switch to a calendar-year plan that changes the budget start date to Jan. 1, which means the upcoming “fiscal 16.5” budget will cover six months, and then the process will begin all over again for the 2017 budget.

It’s important that the city creates a five-year capital improvement plan, but that has to be worked out at a legislative level, Peddle said.

“We have to have a sense of what the plan is going to be,” Peddle said. “But we have to go through the budget process,

and it will also require endorsement from City Council.”

Forming a long-term improvement plan was listed as part of the city’s recently adopted 10-year strategic plan.

“Clearly, we have identified street conditions and a vehicle replacement plan as priorities,” Mayor John Rey said. “We’ve dealt with the water fund over the past year, but streets and vehicle replacement are going to be issues we have to look carefully.”

On Monday, DeKalb County Judge Philip Montgomery set Moore’s bond at $5,000. Moore indicated he would be able to post the $500 bail required to be released from the jail, but he had not done so as of Monday evening.

Sycamore City Council considers $52M budget

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The City Council reviewed a proposed $52 million budget Monday for the new fiscal year, down from the current year’s $57 million spending plan.

Although the council offered time for a public hearing on the budget items, there was no comment on the matter.

“It’s a good budget. It does result in a bit higher reserve in general fund. The general fund operating for the city looks to be about $15 million,” Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy said. “Total funds expected to be expended are $52 million. So we have capital on top of our operating.”

A majority of the budget’s general fund expenditures will go toward city employees. Personnel expenses – including wages, salaries and Medicare costs – represent more than half of the general fund budget, and account for 70 percent of the general fund when workers’ insurance costs are factored in, city documents show.

The city rebates a portion of sales-tax proceeds from fuel buys made by United and American Airlines in Sycamore, an agreement that is being challenged in court by the Regional Transportation Authority. The proposed budget anticipates receiving $25,365,050 from United and American Airlines, and has set aside $24,452,235 to reimburse the companies, City Manager Brian Gregory said.

The city expects to see more money from restaurant and bar taxes, and plans to have savings accounts at balances at 30 percent to 40 percent of operating costs within the next year.

Bouncing back from the 2009 economic downturn, equalized assessed values of homes in 2015 are expected to be $20 million higher than those from 2014, city documents show. In the past four years, Sycamore has seen about 50 homes built each year, which translates to money for the city and its local businesses.

“We’re still building homes in Sycamore and that’s very good. We’re not through the mess entirely,” Mundy said.

“So we’re cautiously optimistic that the next fiscal year beginning May 1, 2016, running through April 30, 2017, will be a productive year in terms of services for our community to both maintain the service levels we have, and increase an improve those where possible in terms of function and affordability.”

Council members will vote on the budget April 18.

news@daily-chronicle.com SOMONAUK – The death of a 28-year-old Sandwich man whose truck was struck by an Amtrak train Sunday afternoon near Somonauk remains under investigation.

DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller identified the man as Josh Wilson, according to a news release Monday morning.

The incident happened around 3 p.m. at the North Green Street crossing of the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe railroad line in Somonauk,

according to a written statement issued by Somonauk police.

Police said Wilson was northbound on Green Street when he drove around the gates and was hit

by Train No. 5, which shortly before had left Union Station headed to the San Francisco Bay area.

Hours afterward, the train, nicknamed the California Zephyr, was expected to continue on its way, Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said.

He said none of the 248 passengers and 25 crew members aboard the train were injured.

Illinois medical marijuana sales continue to grow

CHICAGO – Retail sales of medical marijuana in Illinois increased by about 30 percent in March compared with the previous month.

Program director Joseph Wright said the state’s registered dispensaries sold $1.9 million worth of marijuana in March to more than 4,700 patients. It was the best month yet in sales for the program.

Illinois now has 32 registered dispensaries where qualified patients can buy the drug. Three new dispensaries registered in March.

Wright said about 5,500 patients now qualify for the program.

One killed, several hurt in Illinois car-train crash

SKOKIE – Police said one person was killed and several were injured when a train struck a car at a suburban Chicago railway crossing.

Skokie police released a statement Monday saying firefighters freed two people from the mangled car after the late-morning accident.

Chicago Transit Authority spokesman Jeff Tolman said investigators believe the vehicle drove through a grade crossing before the collision.

Police said one of the car’s occupants, a woman, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Evanston St. Francis Hospital spokesman Jim O’Connell said a female passen-

ger in the car was in critical condition and four train passengers were treated for minor injuries.

U of Illinois president: Keep chancellor finalists secret

URBANA – University of Illinois’ Urbana-Champaign President Timothy Killeen wants to keep candidates’ identities secret after he initially said the finalists for chancellor might sit through public interviews.

University spokesman Tom Hardy said Killeen has decided many potential candidates would not apply for the job if their identities were made public.

Last fall, Killeen said he would consider having finalists make public presentations in an effort to make it “a very open, transparent process,” The (Champaign) News-Gazette reported. Hardy said Killeen had since consulted with

Groupon getting a $250M investment from Atairos

NEW YORK – Groupon is getting a $250 million investment from Atairos and is working with Comcast to find potential collaboration opportunities.

Atairos, a private company started earlier this year, is led by Michael Angelakis.

The former Comcast Corp. vice chairman and chief financial officer will become a Groupon board member.

Groupon, an online daily deal service, said that it will use proceeds for general corporate purposes, including stock buybacks. Its board has also approved adding $200 million to its existing share repurchase program and extending it through April 2018.

MILWAUKEE – After Donald Trump’s toughest stretch of the campaign, he and Ted Cruz made spirited final pitches Monday to Wisconsin voters, who will cast ballots Tuesday in a Republican primary that both consider a key step in the race for president.

After Tuesday, there’s a two-week lull before the next important voting, in New York.

Trump is facing pressure on multiple fronts after a difficult week marked by his controversial comments, reversals and rare moments of contrition. While his past remarks on topics such as Mexican immigrants have drawn a backlash, even he appeared to recognize the damage caused by missteps in the lead-up to Wisconsin.

Those included retweeting an unflattering photo of Cruz’s wife and a series of contradictory comments on abortion that managed to draw condemnation from both abortion-rights activists and opponents.

While Trump is the only Republican with a realistic path to clinching the nomination ahead of the Republican convention, a big loss in Wisconsin would greatly reduce his chances of reaching the needed 1,237 delegates before then. A big win for Trump would give him more room for error down the stretch.

He’s facing a tough challenge in Cruz, whom polls show with a lead in Wisconsin. And he has been battered by negative ads. The state’s top Republican advertiser has been Our Principles PAC, which pumped almost $1.3 million into anti-Trump ads. The Club for Growth, which has endorsed Cruz, is spending $800,000 on ads that promote voting for Cruz – not John Kasich

All 28 delegates will go to the national convention as free agents. But in interviews, 10 said they were committed to vote for Cruz. A few others said they were leaning toward him.

None has endorsed Trump so far.

And while Trump won Tennessee’s March 1 primary, picking up 33 delegates, his supporters have complained that some Trump delegates selected by the state executive committee weren’t actually supporters. They’ll have to vote for Trump on the first two ballots at the convention, but they can vote as they wish on important procedural matters, including the party platform and the rules for the convention.

Secrets state lawmakers can’t hide The Associated Press recently released an extensive study of statehouse secrecy.

Sadly, it came as no surprise Illinois legislative leaders, majority Democrats (House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton) and minority Republicans (House Minority Leader Jim Durkin and Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno), refused AP’s basic Freedom of Information Act request of one week’s worth of appointment calendars and government-related emails.

A few days later, the AP reported the Public Access Bureau, a branch of the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, declined to act on the AP’s appeal of the legislative leaders’ denials.

It turns out the Legislature conveniently exempted itself from the Public Access Bureau’s appeals process that so many other units of government are subject to. Talk about hypocrisy.

The theory that legislative leaders’ schedules and communications should be part of the public record rests on the importance of informing the public about who these leaders meet in the conduct of the public’s business and what they write about in the governmental email accounts taxpayers pay for. That way, the public better can judge motives behind legislation and results of their elected servants’ service.

But again, Illinois’ legislative leaders believe such information, so important to the conduct of their jobs, should be kept a secret. No doubt, the Legislature’s top leaders have other issues they would like to keep secret, but can’t.

It’s no secret legislative leaders and their minions care more about politics than sound public policies that serve the people.

It’s no secret politicians in the Legislature have perverted Illinois’ democracy through gerrymandering, which discourages competition for seats in the House and Senate and thwarts accountability.

It’s no secret legislative leaders have stood idly by as the nine-month-long budget impasse further weakens the state.

It’s no secret legislative leaders have presided over a state that suffers from chronic deficit spending, billions of dollars of debt, and a public pension system that is unfunded to the tune of more than $110 billion.

Top lawmakers can play “I’ve Got a Secret” with their calendars and emails, but the truth is, they’re doing a lousy job. And no matter how hard they might try, they can’t keep that a secret.

VIEWS Michael Barone And Trump’s appeal amounts for some quantum – no one can be sure exactly how much – of the increased Republican turnout this year. So far 21 million Americans have voted in Republican primaries and caucuses, as many as in the whole 2008 cycle and nearly 2 million more than in 2012.

But Trump supporters also seem to have something else in common, as I argued in a recent column – a lack of social connectedness. They are less likely than average to be active in voluntary associations and in churches, in community activities and in extended families.

They seem to see Trump, a familiar figure from his reality TV show, as a single figure who can, without institutional support or coherent philosophy, right the wrongs they complain of.

When you look at a map of the counties Trump has carried in primaries, prominent among them are places with slumped industrial economies and closed factories, such as Youngstown and the Ohio counties along the Ohio River. They are places where family structures are crumbling, male life expectancy is declining, opioid addiction

is common and up to one-fifth of adults receive disability insurance payments.

In writing of such places National Review’s Kevin Williamson describes “the welfare dependency, the drug and alcohol addiction, the family anarchy – which is to say, the whelping of human children with all the respect and wisdom of a stray dog.”

I wouldn’t be so harsh. But the fact is that disability insurance rolls have more than doubled in the last two decades, and about half the applicants claim ailments – back pain, depression – that are unverifiable.

DI recipients can live in such places on $13,000 annual benefits. But it’s hard for them to gain the satisfaction that comes from earning success at work, raising your family and serving your community.

What such people need, Williamson says, is not OxyContin but U-Hauls.

But mobility – moving from one place to another – in America has been declining for a generation. There is little out-migration from the Ohio River counties, much less than there was from Youngstown when steel factories closed 35 years ago.

Then there was moaning about the fate of people uprooted from their lifelong communities to move to fast-growing places such as Texas. Moving is a pain, but it struck me that people leaving Youngstown were less painfully uprooted than their grandparents were

when they moved there from rural Poland.

Earlier generations of Americans, after being moved around the country and the world in World War II, moved readily to seek better lives. Several million Midwesterners moved to California. A third of American blacks moved from the segregated South to what seemed the promised land of the North.

Inadvertently perhaps, we have made it easier to stay put, through disability insurance, through low-priced goods at Wal-Mart and its competitors, through opioid prescriptions written by dollar-hungry doctors – even as family and community ties grow frayed.

People in such situations evidently see themselves as victims and Donald Trump as someone who will make them winners again. Their sense of victimhood resembles that of the Emory University students who couldn’t bear seeing “Trump 2016” chalked on the sidewalk.

Those victims could easily have solved their problem themselves. Maybe protesting Trump voters can, too.

Speaking truth to autocrats during global summit Last week, some of the world’s autocrats came to town for the Nuclear Security Summit, men who have thrown their critics in prison and destroyed the fabric of civil society. They got polite treatment from the Obama administration. They deserved worse.

Take President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, who has regularly imprisoned his critics. He released a batch of prisoners before the summit, perhaps thinking that would take the edge off, although investigative journalist Khadija Ismayilova remains behind bars for no good reason and rights activists Leyla and Arif Yunus are barred from leaving the country.

When Secretary of State John Kerry appeared in the Treaty Room with Aliyev, the secretary offered praise for his guest as a leader in a complex region who has been “very studious and thoughtful.” Kerry and Aliyev

spoke about energy, the conflict with Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan’s role in Afghanistan.

About democracy and human rights, they said nothing.

Vice President Joe Biden also met with the Azeri president, and, according to a statement, “welcomed the recent releases from prison of human rights and civil society activists” and “encouraged continued progress, underscoring the importance of civil society and rule of law.” This is the polite, aspirational approach. In fact, Aliyev does not respect civil society or rule of law. Would it have been so hard to speak out for Ismayilova in public?

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey also has been trying to silence his critics, including by means of a steadily closing vise on press freedom with the prosecution of journalists Can Dundar and Erdem Gul. Biden

has spoken out against the press crackdown previously, but it was not mentioned in the statement issued by the White House after his meeting with Erdogan at the St. Regis Hotel.

Nor did the crackdown come up in the White House’s description of President Barack Obama’s meeting with Erdogan on Thursday evening. After the summit ended Friday, Obama said he warned Erdogan against the “repression of information and shutting down democratic debate.”

President Xi Jinping of China discussed climate change, cyber-conflict and nuclear security with Obama, according to the White House statement that followed their meeting. Obama “reiterated America’s unwavering support for upholding human rights and fundamental freedoms in China,” the statement said. Xi does not share those values; he leads a party-state that

does not respect individual rights or freedom. Obama might have named a few names, such as that of his fellow Nobel Peace laureate, Liu Xiaobo, who is rotting in prison for having sought freedom of expression and respect for human rights. Such direct talk might have offended Xi, but it also would have bolstered the spirits of brave dissidents everywhere who are repeatedly told by their jailers that the world has forgotten them.

Freedom is under siege from China to Russia to the Middle East. Now more than ever, the United States should speak up for individuals who continue to fight for liberty. Private conversations have value, but public messaging does, too. Even at the risk of being rude at a summit, it is critical to remind the tyrants – and indeed the world – that the human spirit can’t be crushed.

What you hear when you listen to many fervent supporters of Donald Trump is that they are victims – victims of globalization and trade agreements that have sent their jobs to Mexico or China. Victims of competition from illegal immigrants from Mexico willing to work for starvation wages. Victims of a Republican establishment that promised to get rid of lots of things they don’t like and then failed to deliver.

Their complaints, in some cases, have some validity, but not always and not a lot. Economist Gordon Hanson writes that without the ability to move lower-wage jobs to Mexico after NAFTA was ratified in 1993, “there might not be much left of Detroit at all.” Which is to say, the U.S. wouldn’t have the 800,000 relatively high-wage auto-sector jobs it has today.

As for the reviled Republican congressional leaders, anyone familiar with the Constitution should know that the president has the power – and in this case the inclination – to veto any conservative legislation Congress passes.

Demographic analysis shows that Trump is getting disproportionate support in primaries from white male noncollege graduates with modest incomes – a group that, as The New York Times’ Thomas Edsall notes, has been giving Republicans large margins in general elections.

DeKALB – In a series against the likely favorite to win the Mid-American Conference, the Northern Illinois softball team sent a freshman into the circle in two of the games.

Alex Frenz responded by throwing two quality contests against Kent State, continuing her strong start to her first season with the Huskies.

“Every game that I go into, I have that, ‘Oh gosh, this is a big game,’ feeling,” said Frenz, who went 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA in 14 innings pitched this weekend.

“I don’t know if it’s because it’s my freshman year or whatever, but every game I pitch, I still get butterflies.”

Despite being a part of a starting rotation that features four quality pitchers, Frenz has been the major workhorse of the group. In 18 games this season – including easily a team-high 17 starts – she is 10-3 with a 2.88 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 90 innings pitched. While sophomores Emma Ray (1.99 ERA in 312/3 innings) and Keegan Hayes (2.79 ERA in 372/3 innings) have lower ERAs, Frenz has nearly double the amount of workload as the second-most used pitcher, Tara Thacker (4.60 ERA in 482/3 innings).

“Sometimes it can get kind of catty between different pitchers because we all have big personalities,” Frenz said, laughing. “But I think with this pitching staff, it really works out good. We handle it really well.

We’re all very supportive of each other. If I get pulled out from a game and one of the other pitchers come in, I know they’re going to get the job done, too.”

In the first game against Kent State, which won the MAC regular season in 2015, Frenz allowed only one run on four hits and struck out three in a complete game to lead the Huskies (23-10 overall, 4-2 in MAC West) to a 4-1 victory.

Even in the 4-3 loss to the Golden Flashes in the third game of the series, giving Kent State the series victory, Frenz was strong for most of the contest. Only two of the runs were earned, as a cruical error by the Huskies opened the door for the Golden Flashes’ three-run fifth inning. After an RBI double by Maddy Grimm, Holly Speers hit a routine pop-up to Northern Illinois shortstop Kali Kossakowski, who dropped it and allowed Grimm to score. The following batter, Shelbi Tilton, ripped an RBI double to left field.

The conditions on Sunday were far from perfect for the young pitcher. Not only were the winds howling straight toward the outfield, but the home plate umpire appeared to not be calling low strikes for either team. For the most part, Frenz kept the ball on the ground – she forced nine groundouts, five strikeouts, four infield pop-ups, two fly outs to the outfield and one line out.

However, in the top of the seventh, Grimm hit a high fly ball to the outfield and the wind carried it over the left field fence for the game-winning home run.

“We talked about it before the game that she had to keep it low,” Northern Illinois catcher Emily Naegele said. “They have some big hitters so if you leave it up high, you see the result that we had. With any type of zone that’s small, you have to keep nibbling at the corners and get them to bite.”

Frenz is in her first year with Northern Illinois after being a three-time all-state player for Oakville High in Missouri. In her final two seasons with the Tigers, she went 37-7 with a 0.89 ERA and 181 strike-

Northern Illinois first baseman Kayti Grable set the record of 15 homers last season. ... After winning 14 consecutive games, the Huskies have now lost three out of four. ... The Huskies have been a juggernaut offensively this season. They lead the MAC in batting average (.309), runs scored (214) and home runs (40). ... Ball State swept Ohio after losing the first three conference games to Miami (Ohio). ... In the 4-3 loss to Kent State, the Huskies stranded runners on second and third on four different occasions – including the bottom of the seventh. ... The Associated Press HOUSTON – One good shot deserved another.

Kris Jenkins of Villanova wasn’t about to be outdone.

Jenkins overcame the shock of watching North Carolina’s Marcus Paige hit a double-clutch 3 to tie it by spotting up behind the right side of the arc and draining a 3 of his own at the buzzer to lift Villanova to a 77-74 victory and the national championship Monday night.

What a shot – and what a game.

The second-seeded Wildcats (35-5), had a six-point lead with 1:52 left, but watched it slowly trickle away.

Then, it was gone, when Paige jumped – and when Ryan Arcidacono started running at him – double clutched and pumped one from beyond the arc to tie the game at 74 with 4.7 seconds left.

After a timeout, Arcidacono worked the ball upcourt and got it to Jenkins, who swished it from about two steps behind the 3-point line.

“Kris told him he was going to be open, Arch made the perfect pass,” Villanova coach Jay Wright explained.

“Kris lives for that moment.”

A few moments later, Jenkins was leaping over press row, hugging his family and shouting: “They said we couldn’t, they said we couldn’t, they said we couldn’t.”

Oh yes, they could.

It’s Villanova’s first title since 1985, when Rollie Massimino coaxed a miracle out of his eighth-seeded underdogs for a victory over star-studded Georgetown.

Hard to top this one, though.

Jenkins, who was adopted by the family of North Carolina guard Nate Britt, now has a spot with Keith Smart, Lorenzo Charles and anyone else who ever made a late game-winner to win the whole thing.

Paige finished with 21 for the top-seeded Heels (33-7), who came one agonizing shot short of giving coach Roy Williams his third national title.

Contract extension for Epstein expected ‘soon’

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The first pitch of the new season came and went without the contract extensions for team president Theo Epstein and his top staff that were expected by now.

But after recent conversations on the subject between chairman Tom Ricketts and Epstein, both said Monday they expect a deal “soon.” Some insiders believe a deal will get done this month.

“I don’t feel a lot of super time pressure, but I think we’ll get to a conclusion here pretty soon,” said Ricketts, who six weeks ago suggested he plans to make Epstein the highest-paid baseball team executive in the game.

“I think he’s the best at what he does in the game, and I think from a compensation standpoint it should be reflected,” Ricketts said.

A new deal for Epstein, who’s in the final year of a five-year, $18.5 million contract, has long been expected to be a formality. Multiple sources close to those involved have said since January they expect an extension of five years in the $40 million to $50 million range.

“We talked a little Theo Epstein bit toward the end of spring training, and I thought they were good, productive conversations,” said Epstein, who has overseen a complete restructuring of the Cubs’ baseball operations since taking control in the fall of 2011, including massive growth of the front office, and an on-field overhaul that produced a 97-win playoff team last year.

But Epstein said consideration for his top staff is part of the talks.

No-look pass for ’Nova’s Szczur: If any of the Cubs had a reason to be distracted Monday night, it might have been outfielder Matt Szczur, the former Villanova football star whose college hoops team was playing in the NCAA title game for the first time in 31 years.

“I’m excited for them. I just hope they win,” he said. “I’ll just have to follow it

Szczur, whose roster spot opened up when utility man Javy Baez (thumb) opened the season on the disabled list, insisted there would be no sneaking peeks at the score Monday night.

“I also have a job here, too,” he said.

Miles to go before they sleep: Despite a franchise-record $150 million payroll, Epstein said his office has kept enough of its payroll budget in reserve to position itself to be active at the trade deadline.

“We have a little bit of flexibility looking ahead to in-season moves,” said Epstein, who also has maintained enough reserves of young talent by passing on some would-be trades the past 18 months.

“I think we’re fairly well positioned, as are some other teams, for what may come to pass in the in-season trade market.”

LARSON: Martinsville has been one of the most difficult tracks for Larson, and he missed last year’s spring race when he passed out from dehydration a day before the event. In four previous races at Martinsville, Larson’s best finish was 19th.

A case could be made that Larson, now in his third Cup season, was last year’s biggest disappointment. He had a strong close to his rookie year, building on the hype surrounding him as NASCAR’s next star, but he’s still seeking his first Cup win.

A lot of Larson’s problems have been mental errors, and in a contract year with Chip Ganassi Racing, he could be trying to show maturity on and off the track. He took a big step with his strong Martinsville showing a day after he finished fourth in the Truck Series race.

“I was able to do double duty ... and I think that definitely helped me get my rhythm,” Larson said. “In the past, it’s been my worst racetrack on the schedule, so to get a top-three finish here feels great, feels like a win, to be honest, and hopefully, this is a good momentum shift that we need.”

DILLON: Somewhat overshadowed

by Larson – they were both part of the 2014 rookie class – he’s been one of the most consistent drivers this season.

Through six races, Dillon has four top10 finishes and is a surprising eighth in the standings.

Most impressive about Dillon’s day at Martinsville: He started 29th and drove his way through the field, even sparring on track with Richard Childress Racing teammate Paul Menard.

He complained about Menard on his team radio, but the two had a friendly exchange after the race.

“I’ve got to learn to keep my mouth shut on the radio. That’s part of racing.

I’m a fiery guy,” Dillon said. “Sometimes you’ve just got to grow up a little bit, but It’s nice to be running up front.”

VICKERS: Perhaps the most interesting finish of the day belonged to Vickers, who earned the best result this year for Stewart-Haas Racing’s No. 14 team.

Vickers has been the replacement driver for injured Tony Stewart in four races, while Ty Dillon drove the other two. The lack of consistency with the driver, mixed with a first-year crew chief, has made it hard for the team to build any momentum.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It’s been all the usual suspects in victory lane through the first six NASCAR races this season.

Although Kyle Busch swept the two national races at Martinsville Speedway over the weekend, the tricky Virginia track gave other drivers a chance to shine and show their improvement.

Among the biggest surprises were AJ Allmendinger and Kyle Larson, who finished second and third Sunday. Austin Dillon was fourth, Brian Vickers finished seventh. And despite her 16thplace finish, Danica Patrick ran inside the top 10 during a stretch of the race.

It was a surprising change of faces at a track where the same drivers typically dominate. Jeff Gordon earned his ninth win at Martinsville last fall, Jimmie Johnson is an eight-time winner and Denny Hamlin has collected five of the grandfather clocks that go to the winner.

The new faces at the front were not lost on Allmendinger, who has used a pair of top-10 finishes the last two races to climb from 20th to 12th in the Sprint Cup standings.

“I passed Jimmie Johnson like five

times at Martinsville – that’s pretty cool!” he said after climbing from his car.

So, is there a new wave of potential championship contenders closing in on the favorites?

Here’s a look: ALLMENDINGER: He made the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship two years ago based on his victory on the road course at Watkins Glen. An ace on the road courses, winning one of the two races each year seemed to be Allmendinger’s only shot at making the Chase field. So when he failed to win either last year, his JTG-Daugherty team was shut out of the 16-driver Chase field and Allmendinger was deeply disappointed.

He can be hard on himself, and his mood can spread to the team. So Allmendinger has made an effort to stay upbeat and match the enthusiasm of first-year crew chief Randall Burnett.

Allmendinger believes the No. 47 Chevrolet has a much more well-rounded team this season after a series of personnel moves.

“We’re getting there. There’s ups and downs. This is a long season,” he said. “The biggest thing, especially with a team like ours, is when you

OAKLAND, Calif. – The White Sox know what they’re getting from the four left-handers in the rotation. From the righty? That’s where it gets dicey.

Mat Latos hasn’t made anyone feel certain just yet that he’s the answer, which is why general manager Rick Hahn probably went after Miguel Gonzalez with more urgency, signing the 31-year-old with a decent track record to a minor league deal Sunday.

“You need to have options available should something no go according to plan,” Hahn said before ace Chris Sale threw the first pitch of the season against the Oakland A’s.

Latos, coming off knee and arm problems last season, “still is building a little bit” and showed signs of progress in three starts in Arizona despite pitching to a 10.38

“Hopefully those continue into his first several starts in Chicago.

“I don’t think we’ve seen the best from him yet. There’s still more there. He’s going to build endurance and crispness in his stuff.”

Latos, like Gonzalez, has been good in the past. But if he doesn’t pan out, the Sox will need Gonzalez, Jacob Turner or Erik Johnson – who will pitch in the rotation at Triple-A Charlotte – to turn into a viable option.

Hahn said Gonzalez’s velocity was back to his norms later in camp.

“Everybody’s looking for pitching, and he’s got a chance if he pitches well,” manager Robin Ventura said. “If something happens up here, we’ll use him.”

Gray scratched with food poisoning: Athletics ace right-hander Sonny Gray went to an emergency room with food

poisoning Monday morning and was scratched in favor of former Cubs lefty Rich Hill.

The A’s said Gray could pitch Tuesday but said they would err on the side of caution, suggesting that might be a long shot.

“I was first wanting to make sure Chris (Sale) didn’t go eat lunch with him,” Ventura said.

Navarro gets the nod: With Gray being scratched, switch-hitter Dioner Navarro got the nod to catch Sale instead of left-handed hitting Alex Avila.

“It was a better matchup than having Avila in there,” Ventura said.

Navarro, new to the Sox this season, caught Sale in one Cactus League game and one minor league game during spring training.

Ventura said who gets the start in this veteran tandem will depend on matchups and often “how they’re doing healthwise.”

Garcia at DH: Avisail Garcia was the Sox’s first designated hitter of 2016, but that spot figures to be fluid with outfielders Melky Cabrera and even Adam Eaton taking some at-bats there.

“Everybody’s going to go through periods where they’re going to DH,” Ventura said. “I think it’s going to be better for them physically if we can rotate that around.”

Garcia said he has no objection, even though he’s used to being on the field.

“Whatever is best for the team,” he said.

Opening Day J-Roll: Jimmy Rollins made his 16th consecutive Opening Day start, tying him with Albert Pujols for the longest active streak in baseball. Rollins, who took an 11-game O-day hitting streak into Monday’s game, was the oldest Sox Opening Day shortstop since Luke Appling, who was 42 in 1949.

‘Jimmy Point Guard’ makes sense for Bulls

Then again, “Jimmy Point Guard” has been waiting in the wings for quite some time.

It was just before the All-Star game last season in which Butler announced that all 6-foot-7, 220 pounds of him was entering the All-Star Weekend Skills Challenge. A contest that until that time had been reserved for point guards.

“Who said I can’t be a point guard?”

Butler joked then.

He even tried on the nickname

“Jimmy Point Guard” and liked the way it fit.

But what started off as seemingly just more Butler bravado has turned into a way of life for the Bulls since last week. Maybe, just maybe, it’s also planted a seed in the organization moving forward.

When starting point guard Derrick Rose couldn’t answer the bell for the second half of the game in Houston last Thursday night, first-year coach Fred Hoiberg was a bit stuck. Back-up point guard E’Twaun Moore was on a minutes restriction, while Aaron Brooks was a bad matchup.

All Butler did was finish with 21 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

“It’s really simple,” Butler would say afterward of playing NBA point guard. “Dribble, shoot when you’re open, pass it when you’re not. … I really just got the easy job.”

Rose has missed the past two games with the elbow injury, which meant two more auditions for Butler playing point.

In the loss to Detroit on Saturday, he was a fantasy owner’s dream, scoring 28 points, grabbing 17 rebounds and handing out 12 assists.

The last time Rose had a 12-assist

game? Go back to March 10, 2012, against Utah – or basically three knee surgeries ago.

Then Sunday in the win in Milwaukee, Butler again showed off the point guard skills, scoring 25 points, grabbing five rebounds and handing out eight more assists. That’s 26 assists in a three-game span, and two of them resulting in wins.

“We’re obviously very comfortable with Jimmy with the ball in his hands,” Hoiberg said. “He’s finished off a lot of games for us.

“I think we all remember what he said when coming into the season that he’s a point guard. Yeah, he’s done a good job. He’s such a versatile player.”

Bulls owner Reinsdorf among 10 elected to hall

Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf found out just how much Monday, as it was announced the longtime owner was elected to the Naismith Memorial Jerry Basketball Hall of Fame.

Reinsdorf Reinsdorf was part of the 2016 10-member class, which also included Allen Iverson, Tom Izzo, Shaquille O’Neil, Sheryl Swoopes, Darrel Garretson, John McLendon, Zelmo Beaty, Cumberland Posey and Yao Ming, as Reinsdorf was the only owner of an NBA franchise included in the group.

Izzo and McLendon made it as coaches, while Garretson as a longtime referee.

Born in Brooklyn, Reinsdorf came onto the Chicago sports scene back in 1981, buying the White Sox. Then in 1985, Reinsdorf bought the Bulls, watching

them turn into a national brand in the 1990s, thanks to six NBA titles headlined

by Michael Jordan.

Although Reinsdorf, 80, became a fixture in holding up the Larry O’Brien Trophy on a regular basis, it wasn’t a secret baseball was his first love. So when the Sox delivered him a World Series trophy in 2005, the owner didn’t hesitate to insist he had a new prized possession.

As far as his role with the Bulls, it has diminished somewhat, with his son, Michael, taking over the title of team president and COO. However, the older Reinsdorf still is the face of the organization when push comes to shove.

In 2014, he tried to attack a Sun-Times story that pointed out the problems between the organization and the Derrick Rose camp, and then last May in the wake of the Tom Thibodeau firing, Reinsdorf said in a statement, “When everyone is on the same page, trust develops and teams can grow and succeed together.

Unfortunately, there has been a departure from this culture.”

Tools help those with arthritis Dear Dr. K: Age and arthritis have done a number on my hands. I’d like to continue cooking, eating and dressing independently, but it’s getting harder. Any advice?

Dear Reader: Many years ago, I had a patient who taught me the importance of what I’m about to tell you. She was in her late 70s, retired, widowed and lived alone.

She had been extremely independent all of her life. However, with age her dexterity and fine motor skills had diminished. In addition, the combination of arthritis and a small stroke had made cooking and grooming difficult.

One day she came into my office and sat down, in her usual regal way. I asked her how she was doing, and she suddenly burst into tears: “I’m useless, just useless.”

I referred her to a physical and occupational therapist, who told her (and me) about a variety of tools available to help perform everyday activities. Indeed, there are more such tools today than there were then. Most cost less than $50 or $100, and they are widely available in drugstores, medical supply stores and online.

I spoke to geriatrician Dr. Suzanne Salamon, an instructor at Harvard Medical School, about devices she recommends to her patients: • Eating tools. Weighted eating utensils – forks, knives and spoons – make it easier for people with hand tremors to get food to their mouths. The weight cuts down on the amount of hand shaking, which keeps food on the utensil. If your wrist or arm dexterity is diminished, try curved eating utensils, which are twisted to adjust to your grip.

• Skid-control plates and bowls have high sides and rubber rings or bottoms. These enable you to push food against the side of the bowl or plate to load your fork or spoon.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff • Cooking tools. If your grip strength isn’t what it once was, a bottle or jar opener makes a big difference. One-handed tools also are helpful if a stroke or injury prevents two-handed cooking and food prep. For example, a one-handed vegetable brush with suction cups on the bottom allows you to rub vegetables against it to clean them.

• Household tools. One of the most helpful household tools is a grabber. This long-handled tool has pincers at the end to grab anything that’s out of reach. I used one of these when I was recovering from hip replacement surgery and could not bend down much. It really helped.

You also can buy large covers to fit over doorknobs or lamp switches, making them easier to turn. Or buy book holders that let you read hands-free.

• Personal grooming. If it’s difficult for you to reach down, behind or above your body, it can be difficult to groom yourself.

Look for long-handled and curved versions of hairbrushes and combs, toenail clippers and shoehorns. Substitute an electric toothbrush for your manual one. And look into the many tools that are available to help with dressing, such as zipper pulls and shirt buttoners.

Several of these tools restored my patient’s ability to be independent and her self-confidence. I’m sure they can help you.

Decades ago, double was for penalty. Then, North would probably have bid three no-trump. But after a spade lead, the contract would have had no chance, going down two. Now, though, North can make a negative double to show four hearts (the unbid major) and some eightplus points (or six or seven if he really likes his hand). He might hold five or even six hearts and too few points to respond two hearts, but that is rare. South, over his partner’s double, shows his heart support, and four hearts should be reached.

After West leads the spade queen, how should the play proceed?

South should see four potential losers: one spade (on the third round), two hearts and one club.

But there are discards available on diamonds.

Declarer takes the first trick on the board and runs the heart 10.

West wins with the queen and perseveres with spades. Now South must change tack. He wins in the dummy, cashes the diamond ace, overtakes the diamond queen with his king, and plays the diamond jack, discarding the spade seven from the dummy.

Then declarer leads another trump.

Shortly thereafter, he will claim, having lost only two hearts and one club.
