POLL ‘Batman v Superman’ falls 68 percent in second weekend

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Word of mouth might be kryptonite for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” which fell a steep 68 percent in its second weekend in theaters according to comScore estimates Sunday. The superhero pic earned an estimated $52.4 million over the weekend, easily besting the modest new openers such as “God’s Not Dead 2” and “Meet the Blacks.”

The Zack Snyder movie cost a reported $250 million to produce and around $150 million to market, and has earned an estimated $261.5 million to date.

It’s a critical launching point for a series of interconnected movies in the DC Comics Universe from Warner Bros. that will include this year’s “Suicide Squad” and next year’s “Wonder Woman” and two “Justice League” movies, which is why its early performance – and hold – are being so intensely scrutinized.

Superhero movies tend to be frontloaded with fans, and a near 60 percent fall is not uncommon for major blockbusters in weekend two.

“Sometimes the bigger they are the harder they fall,” said Paul Dergarabedian, comScore’s senior media analyst. “This is often what happens when you have films that rank in the top 10 debuts of all time.”

Snyder’s “Man of Steel,” for instance, fell 64.6 percent in its second weekend, and even “The Dark Knight Rises” dropped a hefty 61.4

percent. Things aren’t terribly different in the Marvel universe either. Disney’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” tumbled 59.4 percent and Fox’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past” plunged 64.2 percent.

Also, the first week “Batman v Superman” haul included the $27.7 million from Thursday night preview showings, whereas the second weekend sum does not account for those. The Friday of Easter weekend also is a holiday for many, making a straight comparison not entirely equitable.

Still, 68 percent is on the steeper side for a second week fall. Last year’s much derided “Fantastic Four” reboot fell 68.2 percent and the divisive “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” dropped 69 percent in 2009.

In weekend one, many wondered whether the poor reviews would kill the film out of the gates, but it ended up earning $166 million regardless.

“This has been a poster child in illustrating the disconnect between critics and audience,” Dergarabedian said.

The second weekend, however, is where word of mouth starts to come into play, and on the fence audiences must decide whether or not it’s worth their time and money.

But, the near future still looks promising for “Batman v Superman,” which has the skies to itself for the next week until Disney’s “The Jungle Book” opens April 15. It’s still doing major business internationally too, with $85.1 million in earnings this weekend, bringing its global total to $687.9 million.

Motorist killed when car hit by train

rgillespie@shawmedia.com SOMONAUK - A 28-year-old Sandwich man was killed Sunday after authorities said he drove around lowered railroad crossing gates and his car was struck by an Amtrak passenger train.

The incident happened around 3 p.m. at the North Green Street crossing of the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe railroad line in Somonauk, according to a written statement issued by Somonauk police. Police said the driver, who has not been identified, was northbound on Green

Street when he drove around the gates and was hit by Train No. 5, which shortly before had left Union Station headed to the San Francisco Bay area.

Hours afterward, the train, named the California Zephyr, was expected to continue on its way, according to Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari.

He said none of the 248 passengers and 25 crew members aboard the train were injured.

Police repeated that in the news release.

Several local authorities were on the scene investigating, including Somonauk police, and the DeKalb County sheriff and coroner’s offices.

Enharmonic Fusion a cappella group prepping for NYC competition

bkeeperman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – When Amanda Helmeid traveled to New York last year with the high school’s a cappella group Enharmonic Fusion, she thought it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“It’s still unbelievable to be able to go,” she said. “Last year, I really enjoyed seeing the college and high school groups that we were on the same level with, but also being in a completely different place and given the opportunity. It was really cool.”

But she’ll get a chance to go again in April with about 30 other DHS a cappella singers and they have only a month to prepare.

Enharmonic Fusion, DeKalb High School’s a cappella ensemble, took first place in the Wild Card division of the Varsity Vocals International Championship of High School a cappella competition, which means the group will travel to New York to compete against 10 other schools for the national win.

DHS sent in a video performance for the division and the results were posted online March 29.

“I’m excited that other people [in Enharmonic Fusion] get to have the experience too,” Helmeid said.

“But I know competition has gotten so much bigger and it’s going to be even tougher this year. I’m looking forward to that part of it.”

The group has to hit the ground running because the trip is estimated to cost about $21,000. So far, they have set up a GoFundMe account and will plan a spaghetti dinner and performance. One of the most challenging aspects is that time crunch to get funding, director Travis Erikson said.

“They already have a pretty intense practice schedule,” he said. “So that won’t have to change much. The challenge is how to fit in fundraisers and planning on top of practice.”

This year, the ensemble is possibly the best its ever been, Erikson.

“They are really very strong and have represented themselves well,” he said. “They have a great work ethic, attitude and sense of camaraderie.”

The strong relationships that singers have formed within the group will make the process even more exciting, said Grace Klonoski, who won best soloist in the a cappella quarterfinals in February.

Despite fundraising challenges, group members said they were confident they’d reach their goal. The community has stood behind Enharmonic Fusion in the past so the hope is that the trend will continue.

“We’re really hoping so, at least,” said Ian Panke, a DHS junior student and singer. “Without the community helping, it’s going to be very hard to get there.”

Men take a mile walk in high heels to spread awareness of sexual assault

They came, they walked and they have the blisters on their feet to tell the tale.

Community members walked a mile in high heels Saturday in an effort to spread awareness about sexual assault as a part of the national Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event. This year’s march, the first to occur in DeKalb, served as a chance for people to protest sexualized violence against women, said Sarah Slavenas, prevention coordinator at Safe Passage.

“I think that if we are going to address an issue that affects so many people … we need to get the entire population talking about this issue and committed to doing something

about it,” Slavenas said.

More than 90 percent of the estimated 284,350 sexual assaults that occurred in the U.S. in 2014 were against women, according to data from the U.S. Department of Justice. The point of wearing high heels is to recognize the victim blaming that accompanies sexual assault, Slavenas said.

“So often when somebody reports that they’ve been sexually assaulted, some of the first questions are really geared at their behaviors rather than their perpetrators,” Slavenas said. “ ‘What were you wearing? Where were you at? Why were you with that person,’ right? So we need to change the conversation … and recognize that no matter what you’re wearing, no matter how much you’ve had to drink and no matter where you’re at,

According to the American Heart Association, two to three

servings of seafood per week can offer big health benefits such as maintaining brain health and reducing the risk of heart disease by 30 percent. A serving of fish is 3 to 4 oz, or the size and width of a woman’s palm. Seafood contains healthy nutrients such as omega-3 fats which benefit the heart, brain, eyes and can help lower your triglycerides! Fish also contains iron, B-vitamins and less saturated fat than other sources of protein foods.

Still not convinced you should be eating seafood? Start with salmon; it is one of the easiest to prepare and people often love the taste. Start by rinsing your salmon and patting it dry. Brush each piece with a small amount of vegetable or olive oil. The cook time for salmon depends on cooking method and thickness, but it usually cooks very quickly. If broiling, cook 2-1/2 minutes for every ¼ inch thickness. Bake salmon 4 to 6 minutes for every ½ inch of meat.

When grilling your salmon, cook for 10 minutes for every inch of thickness. Try an easy marinade of 1 tablespoon honey, 2 teaspoons low-sodium soy sauce, 1 teaspoon olive oil and ¼ teaspoon of black pepper on your salmon with any of these cooking methods! Try your salmon on a leafy green salad, in tacos or with your favorite pasta dish for a whole meal!

Red high heels were handed out by Safe Passage volunteers to men of all shapes and sizes, most of whom had never worn women’s shoes, let alone walked a mile in them. James Davies, 30, of Sycamore tested his long boarding skills while others learned how to put one foot in front of the other.

Smiles faded to grimaces as the group of more than 50 participants rounded the last leg of the walk, which had taken them from Blackhawk Road to Ridge Drive to Normal Road to Hillcrest Drive. Jerry Lane, 67, of Sycamore said he joined in the walk to support Safe Passage and to promote a larger role for men in the conversation about preventing sexual assault.

“Men should be more involved in holding their fellow males accountable,” Lane said.

Ryan Porto, 19, of Palatine said he hopes more people will participate in the next march.

“I feel like there’s not too many men backing it right now,” Porto said.

“If we’re starting, hopefully more people will jump on board.”

Sycamore’s $52 million budget on council agenda

rgillespie@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The public will get to weigh in Monday on the city of Sycamore’s fiscal 2017 budget at a public hearing held more as a formality than an impact session, city officials said.

“There’s not a lot of conversation there,” Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy said about the public forum. “But we do it, by law, anyway so anyone who wants to comment can do that.”

The public hearing is on the agenda for tonight’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting, which will be at 7 p.m. in council chambers at 308 W. State St. City officials have proposed a $52 million budget for the new fiscal year, which runs May 1, to April 30, 2017. That amount is down from the current year’s $57 million spending plan.

According to the budget proposal, the new budget does not include the city raising any new taxes. Mundy said in the upcoming fiscal year, the city expects to see a bit more revenue from restaurant and bar taxes and to get the savings accounts to balances at 30 to 40 percent of operating costs. He added that by fiscal 2018, the city will be reliant on transfers to and from the general fund.

“All of these point to a stronger financial position,” said Mundy, who has been mayor since 2005 and is not seeking re-election.

The biggest chunk of the city’s budget is for city workers’ pay and benefits, according to the budget proposal. Salaries alone are 52 percent of the city’s spending, the budget plan indicates. When insurance costs are factored in, personnel expenses jump to 70 percent of expenditures planned for the general

fund.

Equalized assessed values of homes are estimated to be $20 million higher for 2015 (which will be collected this calendar year) than what it was in 2014 (that property owners paid in 2015).

The mayor said that in the past four years, Sycamore has seen about 50 new homes built. That translates to money for the city and local businesses, he said. The growth is a rebound from the downturn that occurred during the 2009 recession.

“I’m especially happy the economy has improved a little bit,” Mundy said.

As the city forecasts maintaining “strong” tax receipts, it’s not lost on city officials the financial dustup the local school district found itself in this year.

District 427 is set to do cost-cutting layoffs, especially after being impacted by the state’s ongoing fiscal year 2016 budget impasse. The General Assembly normally would be expected to have a fiscal 2017 budget in place before it the session ends next month. But Illinois is in its 10th month with no appropriations plan passed by the Legislature. Spending, for the most part, has occurred as a result of lawsuits and previously passed legislation.

Mundy pointed out that District 427 relies more heavily on state aid.

“We feel badly for anybody who’s losing their job that’s connected with the schools, or any other agencies where the state has just not been able to step up and do [its] part for all of these agencies and people who’s job relies on state aid,” the mayor said.

Following Monday’s public hearing, the City Council is expected to vote on the next fiscal year’s budget at its April 18 meeting.

WASHINGTON – A government-sponsored committee is recommending standards that could clear the way for commercial drone flights over populated areas and help speed the introduction of package delivery drones and other uses not yet possible, The Associated Press has learned.

The Federal Aviation Administration currently prohibits most commercial drone flights over populated areas, especially crowds. That ban frustrates a host of industries that want to take advantage of the technology.

“Every TV station in the country wants one, but they can’t be limited to flying in the middle of nowhere because there’s no news in the middle of nowhere,” said Jim Williams, a former head of FAA’s drone office who now advises the industry for Dentons, an international law firm.

Cellular network providers also want to loosen restrictions so drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles, can inspect cell towers, which often are in urban areas. Amazon’s vision for package deliveries entails drones winging their way over city and suburban neighborhoods.

The AP obtained a copy of the recommendations, which were sent to the FAA late Friday. The agency is not bound by the recommendations and can make changes when it writes final rules.

The recommendations call for creating four categories of small drones that commercial operators can fly over people, including crowds in some cases.

The first category of drones would weigh no more than about a half-pound.

They essentially could fly unrestricted over people, including crowds. Drone makers would have to certify that if the

drone hit someone, there would be no more than a 1 percent chance that the maximum force of the impact would cause a serious injury.

For the three other categories, the drones would have to fly at least 20 feet over the heads of people and keep a distance of at least 10 feet laterally from someone.

According to the recommendations: • Drones in the second category are expected to be mostly small quadcopters – drones with multiple arms and propellers, and weighing 4 pounds to 5 pounds – but there is no weight limit.

Flights over people, including crowds, would depend on the design and operating instructions. Manufacturers would have to demonstrate through testing that the chance of a serious injury was 1 percent or less.

• Drones in the third category could not fly over crowds or densely populated areas. These drones would be used for work in closed or restricted sites where the people that the drones fly over have permission from the drone operator to be present. Those people would be incidental to the drone operations and flights over them would be brief, rather than sustained. Manufacturers would have to show there was a 30 percent chance or less that a person would be seriously injured if struck by the drone at the maximum strength impact possible.

• Drones in the fourth category could have sustained flights over crowds. Working with the FAA and engaging the local community, the operator would have to develop a “congested area plan” showing how flight risks would be mitigated. As before, the risk of serious injury would have to be 30 percent or less. Safety tests would be more exacting and the FAA would set a limit on how strong the drone’s maximum impact could be.

Move to OK commercial drone flights over people

WASHINGTON – It was in Nevada, just about month ago, when Donald Trump proclaimed his affection for the uneducated.

“We won with young. We won with old. We won with highly educated.

We won with poorly educated. I love the poorly educated,” the Republican presidential front-runner boasted after coasting to a decisive victory in the state’s caucuses.

He should love them.

Trump overwhelmingly leads his rivals for support among the less educated, and draws more modest backing from college graduates and those with postgraduate study, according to exit polls conducted for the Associated Press and television networks by Edison Research.

In an analysis of voters by education in states where exit or entrance polling is available, nearly half of those with high school diplomas or less schooling said they supported the billionaire. Just more than 40 percent of those with some college study favored him. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz captured the next best showing among the two groups, with 27 and 28 percent, respectively.

What is it about Trump that he attracts such a strong showing among those who haven’t graduated from college?

“I think it is incorrect to look at the data and conclude that those voters are more ignorant,” Katherine Cramer, a political science professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said in an interview. “Instead, there’s a strong correlation between having a college degree or not, and your economic situation in life.”

Cramer explains, “These are folks who have been feeling a real struggle to make ends meet for decades now and they see a candidate coming along

who says to them, ‘You’re right. You’re not getting your fair share. It sucks.

And I’m going to stand up for you.’ ” “That’s really appealing to people,” Cramer said before Tuesday’s primary in Wisconsin, where Cruz is leading Trump in polls.

Exit polls from most of the primaries and caucuses held to date show Trump has trailed among voters having a high school degree or less in only one state where data is available so far. Cruz led in his home state of Texas. The high school graduate sample size wasn’t large enough in Massachusetts and Vermont for a solid measure.

Trump’s state-by-state performance wasn’t nearly as strong among those with some college or an associate’s degree.

So far, Trump’s populist pitch to ordinary folks facing economic uncertainty is resonating, says Michael McDonald, associate professor of political science at the University of Florida.

“A lot of people have underestimated Trump because they expect a candidate to do things in a certain way.

And because he breaks the mold on that in some respects, they miss when he’s making these appeals that speak directly to the voters,” he said.

Case in point, says McDonald, was the Republican debate in Manchester, New Hampshire, in February.

Trump and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush got into a testy exchange over their positions on eminent domain, the process by which the government takes private property for public use.

Trump drew boos from the audience when he dismissed Bush saying, “Let me talk, quiet,” and he then told the crowd that the booing was coming from “donors and special interests” in the audience – pressing his populist, anti-establishment message.

Cramer calls it the “politics of resentment,” when a candidate taps into the economic stress and gives people something concrete to blame.

Illinois budget mess implicates safety with armored-pickup halt

SPRINGFIELD – After four months hauling cash from Illinois driver’s license facilities without payment from the state, an armored-truck company walked last fall, leaving the job to police officers who work for the secretary of state.

Montreal-based GardaWorld’s trucks started rolling again after the state paid the overdue $79,000 amid a record budget standoff. But that only covered work through last Friday, so almost as quickly as the mess was resolved, the state could find itself in the same predicament again.

While the state’s 10-month deadlock has forced deep spending cuts on human services and education programs, the armored car foul-up has raised security and efficiency implications for the state’s handling of many thousands of dollars.

Security experts vary on the safety risk of having state officers working in such unfamiliar terrain. But they speak in concert on the inefficiency of the state diverting them from regular duties so they can run deposit errands.

Secretary of State Jesse White’s office confirmed to The Associated Press that pairs of armed police officers made the pickups during off-hours for 15 weeks starting Oct. 23 while GardaWorld sat it out. White spokesman Henry Haupt said it was the “safest and best option” – even when considering it cost $30,000 in overtime pay.

Lawmakers fear that continued cutting of corners without some resolution of the budget mess could lead to repeated debacles like the one at the driver’s license facilities.

“We will see more dramatic cases of such events happening as we start to approach the summer months without a budget,” said Rep. Sam Yingling, a Grayslake Democrat and vice chairman of the State Government Administration Committee. “Greater risk to the public interest and to public safety.”

Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democrats who control the General Assembly blame each other for the stalemate.

Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly said the GardaWorld situation “is another example of why Illinois needs a truly balanced budget.”

MUNSTER, Ind. – A developer said its proposal for an $8 billion, 278-mile rail line from Indiana to Wisconsin would greatly relieve Chicago-area freight congestion.

The rail line could handle 110 trains a day and would be the largest railroad project in the U.S. since 1911, according to Great Lakes Basin Transportation.

Great Lakes president Jim Wilson told The (Munster) Times that Chicago-area freight traffic could increase by 50 percent in the next four decades.

Officials said it takes a train three days to get from Los Angeles to Chicago – and then another three days to get through packed Windy City terminals.

Wilson said the tracks could save trains passing through Chicago as much as 24 hours each way, improving the shipping of frozen foods or produce. As many as 25 percent of the trains entering Chicago are just passing through.

“It certainly goes against the grain of incremental improvements at low cost,” said Joseph Schwieterman, director of the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development at DePaul University. “But it could save shippers a lot of money.”

CHICAGO – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is asking federal and Cook County authorities to look into an outburst of racial slurs that have been broadcast over police department radio frequencies.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that in a letter to U.S. Attorney Zachary Fardon and Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez, Emanuel said the transmissions were made by an unauthorized private citizen using noncity-issued equipment.

The Chicago Police Department began its own investigation after a male voice was heard March 13 on a police frequency using obscenities and racial slurs.

In his letter, Emanuel said there have since been three more instances of unauthorized people broadcasting racial slurs over police frequencies.

Emanuel said the language used and the racial intolerance expressed “do not represent the values of our police department or our city.”

Amtrak train derails in Pa.; two workers killed The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHESTER, Pa. – An Amtrak train struck a piece of heavy equipment just south of Philadelphia on Sunday, causing a derailment that killed two Amtrak workers and sent more than 30 passengers to hospitals, authorities said.

Train 89 was heading from New York to Savannah, Georgia, at about 8 a.m. when it hit the equipment that was on the track in Chester, about 15 miles outside Philadelphia, officials said. The impact derailed the lead engine of the train that was carrying more than 300 passengers and seven crew members.

Chester Fire Commissioner Travis Thomas said two people were killed. A National Transportation Safety Board official confirmed that one was the operator of the equipment. U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Amtrak board Chairman Anthony Coscia told him the other person killed was a supervisor and both were Amtrak employees.

The Delaware County medical examiner’s office said no information would be released until after autopsies Monday.

NTSB investigator Ryan Frigo said at an evening news conference that the event data recorder and forward-facing and inward-facing video from the locomotive have been recovered.

He said the locomotive engineer was among those taken to hospitals. Officials said earlier that none of the injuries was deemed life-threatening.

Schumer said it’s unclear whether the equipment was being used for regular main-

tenance, which usually is scheduled Sunday mornings because there are fewer trains on the tracks, or whether it was clearing debris from high winds in the area overnight. But he said Amtrak has “a 20-step protocol” for having such equipment, described by Amtrak as a backhoe, on the track, and no trains are supposed to go on a track when equipment is present.

“Clearly this seems very likely to be human error,” Schumer said, calling for Amtrak to review its processes. “There is virtually no excuse for a backhoe to be on an active track.”

An Amtrak spokeswoman said in an email to The Associated Press that any information about the type of equipment on the track and why the train was using that track would have to come from the NTSB. She said any information about the two people killed, including what company they worked for, would have to come from the Delaware County medical examiner.

The company was posting alerts on its website, however, with updates on its service.

Amtrak said service on the Northeast Corridor between New York and Philadelphia began operating after an earlier suspension and limited service was restored between Wilmington, Delaware, and Philadelphia by Sunday afternoon.

Amtrak said Sunday night that it will operate regularly scheduled trains Monday, although there may be some delays on Acela Express, Northeast Regional and other services between Philadelphia and Wilmington, Delaware.

As the seas rise, the GOP denies

“I just think we have much bigger risks,” Donald Trump told us last week. We had asked the Republican presidential candidate about human-caused climate change, a phenomenon in which he said he is “not a big believer.” Don’t good business leaders hedge against risks, spending something now to avoid potentially negative outcomes later? “I think our biggest form of climate change we should worry about is nuclear weapons,” he responded.

Trump is not alone among Republicans in citing other scary problems to illogically ignore the danger of a warming world.

Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) and Ohio Gov. John Kasich both mention terrorism– “the real problem that faces us today,” Kasich said – when criticizing President Obama’s efforts to slow climate change.

Meanwhile, in the world of facts, evidence and science, the dangers of climate change look ever more frightening.

The latest news comes courtesy of a shocking paper in the journal Nature about how Antarctic ice sheets might respond to warmer air and ocean temperatures. Scientists from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Pennsylvania State University examined previous eras in which the planet was only a bit warmer yet seas were much higher.

Previous modeling did not match these foreboding historical phenomena, so the scientists used insights into the physics of how the continent’s massive ice formations melt to improve the models. The result is downright scary: “Antarctica has the potential to contribute more than a meter of sea-level rise by 2100 and more than 15 meters by 2500, if emissions continue unabated.” With that additional melting from Antarctica, seas could rise some 6 feet by 2100. This would result in humanitarian catastrophe, swamping coastal cities all over the world and forcing massive inland migrations.

In separate research, highlighted last week by The Post’s Chris Mooney, scientists found strong evidence that a layer of permafrost across the frozen north is thawing, which could lead to massive stocks of organic matter breaking down, which would release more planet-warming greenhouse emissions. This feedback loop could significantly worsen global warming over time.

Perhaps warmer Arctic temperatures also will lead to largescale plant growth, canceling out some of the greenhouse gases emitted during the thaw? A group of researchers asked 98 experts on the Arctic about this possibility, and the results were not encouraging. Models predicting large offsetting effects, for example, failed to account for changes in the region’s water resources. All in all, the chance that the Arctic will become an increasingly large source of greenhouse emissions this century appears to be significant, if humanity does not act to arrest warming.

The interlocking effects of the Earth’s various systems remain complex and difficult to predict. What is beyond question is that we face significant risk. The prudent response would be to mitigate the threat, instead of waiting to discover that scientists’ warnings were on target – or even understated – after the damage has been done.

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. ...

They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people,” he said.

Since then, the real estate mogul has only amped up the racism. He insists that he would build a wall on our southern border – forcing Mexico to pay for it – and he’d ban entry to all Muslims. Further, he has said, he’d round up the estimated 11 million undocumented workers already here and deport them. That’s not only imprudent, but it’s also irrational.

Yet, the Border Patrol union is so impressed with Trump that it has chosen to, well, trumpet its endorsement, breaking with union history in its first-ever official support for

a presidential candidate during the primaries.

“We need a person in the White House who doesn’t fear the media, who doesn’t embrace political correctness ... who won’t bow to foreign dictators, who is pro-military and values law enforcement, and who is angry for America and NOT subservient to the interests of other nations. Donald Trump is such a man,” the union said in a statement.

It’s not unusual for law enforcement officers to lean to the right; they often support Republican political candidates. But the union’s statement endorsing Trump is a hodgepodge of anti-Obama, ultraright-wing memes shot through with a healthy dose of paranoia.

Claiming its members protect the country in “an environment where our own political leaders try to keep us from doing our jobs,” they paint President Obama’s tenure as a mistake. “America has already tried a young, articulate freshman senator who never created a job as an attorney and under whose watch criminal cartels have been given the freest border reign ever known,” the statement says. Really? These people represent federal law enforcement?

That Trump has tapped into a

deep reserve of xenophobia among the Republican base is no great surprise; a GOP establishment that is now panicked by his rise spent years pandering to that xenophobia. But it is surprising that a union representing more than 75 percent of the nation’s Border Patrol agents has gone into league with that base, unveiling, in the process, a dangerous hostility toward Mexicans that hardly befits the agents’ status as law enforcement representatives. Their endorsement will only undermine confidence in their ability to carry out their duties fairly.

In 2011, an Arizona-based human rights organization, No More Deaths, published a report, “A Culture of Cruelty,” alleging systematic abuse of migrants and detainees by Border Patrol agents. Further, activists with No More Deaths contend that the Homeland Security hierarchy ignores or whitewashes those abuses.

With its endorsement of Donald Trump, the National Border Patrol Council has simply given those claims even more credibility.

‘Trump Republican’ a seriously damaged brand

Donald Trump is taking a troubled brand – the Republican Party – and making it worse.

In last week’s Bloomberg Politics national survey, 60 percent of Americans said they had an unfavorable view of Republicans, the highest level in seven years. Since 2009, when this survey began, a plurality of the public has regarded the party with disfavor, but over the past several months the gap has widened. Only 33 percent rate Republicans favorably now.

There is a consensus among many Republican strategists, pollsters and politicians that Trump, with his exclusionary politics, harsh oratory and fondness for personal insult, has hurt the party’s image.

“This absolutely is hurting our brand,” says former Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine. “The question is how we unravel going forward. I fear the effects could be long-lasting. It’s tragic.”

Some blame the Trump phenomenon on cable and broadcast television networks, saying they have aban-

doned their standards of newsworthiness to attract the big audiences he commands.

But much more than the media, it was the Republican Party’s behavior during the Obama years that paved the way for Trump. In several election cycles they promised to cut taxes, kill Obamacare, reduce regulations and bulk up the military. This agenda, they claimed, would restore lost jobs and relieve economic insecurity.

To voters who believed this and sent Republicans to Washington, nothing changed. On cultural issues like gay marriage and some economic ones, liberal ideas carried the day.

Trump has capitalized on this frustration with a message of comprehensive opposition – to immigrants, Washington, Muslims, international trade, Wall Street, “political correctness,” establishment politicians and many others. This has tarnished the party’s brand by limiting its appeal to a hard core of frustrated voters while turning off a larger public with its harshness.

The negative public attitudes pervade every demographic and regional

group in the Bloomberg poll. Other surveys show similar results.

A recent CNN poll, for example, showed a steady decline in the public’s estimation of Republicans over the last year. Last August, 54 percent the poll’s respondents rated Republicans unfavorably. By this March, that number had risen 7 percentage points to 61 percent – as negative ratings of Democrats were falling by 3 percentage points.

Republicans see two glimmers of hope. One is the prospect of choosing a candidate with a positive message – certainly not Trump and probably not Texas Sen. Ted Cruz – at the nominating convention in Cleveland in July.

“Ultimately the party will be defined by the Presidential nominee and how the campaign is run,” says Whit Ayers, a prominent Republican pollster who supported Senator Marco Rubio, the once-favored Floridian who dropped out of the race after losing his state’s primary to Trump on March 15.

The other is that Republicans could prevail over Democrats in congressional and state contests even

while losing at the top of their ticket.

That could happen, but the surveys suggest otherwise. In contrast to the Republicans, Democrats are looked at quite favorably by the public. In the Bloomberg poll, 51 percent gave Democrats a favorable rating against 43 percent unfavorable, the party’s best numbers in seven years.

And the Republican brand is in trouble across the board. Independents, by a margin of 63 percent to 28 percent, regard Republicans less favorably than the public at large.

Geographically, there is a negative majority even in the strongest Republican region, the South. In the Midwest, unfavorable ratings outnumber favorable ones by more than two to one.

Bad feelings toward Republicans have intensified among women, which many polling experts attribute to Trump. By two-to-one margins, women, including married women, where Republicans usually do better, give the party unfavorable marks.

Far be it from me to suggest that any American ought to be penalized for his or her choice of presidential candidate. One of the many things that make this democracy worth fighting to preserve is its premise of one person, one vote – a radical notion that gives the poorest citizen the same franchise as the wealthiest.

Furthermore, the secret ballot is designed to protect that fundamental right from bribery or coercion, intimidation or blackmail. You get to go into the voting booth and choose whoever you believe will best represent the national interest – and your own. You don’t have to worry about losing your job or your home or your livelihood because of the choice you’ve made.

Nevertheless, I have to wonder about the 16,500 members of the National Border Patrol Council, a union that has endorsed the candidacy of Donald Trump. Its members are federal law enforcement agents, charged with securing the country’s borders in a manner that respects the rights of those it may need to apprehend. Border Patrol agents should be evenhanded, prudent and circumspect, unflagging in upholding basic human rights.

Brown bag offers Sycamore exhibit sneak preview DAILY CHRONICLE “Generosity is contagious. People see it in Sycamore, and they just want to jump right in and help out.”

This quote is from Mayor Ken Mundy, and really sums up what happens in Sycamore on a regular basis. The Sycamore History Museum has applied this idea to an exhibit that demonstrates how local residents have shaped Sycamore over the years.

As part of the Brown Bag lunch series, Michelle Donahoe, executive director of the Sycamore History Museum, will provide a preview of the museum’s new exhibit, “Faces of Sycamore: Our Community, Our Stories.”

The program will be at noon Thursday, at the Sycamore Center, 308 W. State St. The exhibit tells the story of people from today and yesterday, young and old, and men and women, all of whom have made a difference in Sycamore.

“Although the exhibit is a small sampling of people who have shared their tal-

ents, we hope that visitors will walk away with ideas about how they can contribute to the place many of us call home,” Donahoe said in a news release. “Some of the faces will be familiar such as Red Johnson and Clifford Danielson, while others are less well-known, but they all have service and passion in common.”

The exhibit will open to the public from 1 to 3 p.m. on April 16. People both historical and contemporary are featured. There are also interactives that will engage people in the stories that are shared in the exhibit.

To complement the ideas presented in the exhibit, programs are scheduled throughout the year.

The Sycamore History Museum’s Brown Bag lunches are on the first Thursday of every month. The program is free, and donations are welcomed.

Kent State avoids Naegele, beats Huskies

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The Kent State softball team wanted nothing to do with Northern Illinois slugger Emily Naegele.

Coming into the game with a chance to break the Northern Illinois school record for home runs in a season, Naegele was walked four times – including twice intentionally – in four plate appearances. The strategy paid off for the Golden Flashes, who survived for a 4-3 victory in a thriller between two of the best teams in the conference on a windy but sunny Sunday afternoon at Mary M. Bell Field.

“I don’t want to get on the bus after a loss and say it was the kid that’s been killing us and we let her kill us,” Kent State interim coach Eric Oakley said.

“It’s a compliment. We couldn’t let her beat us. She’s just too good.”

Naegele, who entered the game with 15 home runs, had torched the Golden Flashes (22-10 overall, 5-1 MAC East) in the first two games of the series on Friday. She went 3 for 7 with three home runs and five RBIs. However, she faced 17 pitches on Sunday – 16 of which were balls.

“Walks score sometimes, you just got to get them going behind you,” Naegele said. “Take it with a grain of salt. They weren’t giving me anything close, so just take the walk and hope the people behind me can get the job done.”

The Huskies (23-10 overall, 4-2 in MAC West) had runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Kent State reliever Janel Hayes got Northern Illinois junior leadoff hitter Kali Kossakowski, who had two hits on the day, to fly out to right field to end the game. It was the fourth time the Huskies stranded runners on second and third – leaving 13 runners on base in the game.

“We left 13 runners on base. You’re not going to win many games with that,” Northern Illinois coach Christina Sutcliffe said. “I think that’s a youth issue. We just need to get experience in those situations and hopefully grow from it.”

The main damage done to Northern Illinois freshman pitcher Alex Frenz came from Kent State’s No. 3 hitter,

1 by allowing one run in seven innings, took the loss on Sunday – scattering seven hits and only allowing two earned runs with five strikeouts.

“She’s a great pitcher,, and she’s going to have a great career here,” Oakley said of Frenz. “We expect to be in the MAC tournament, and we expect to see (Northern Illinois) in the MAC tournament, and we expect to see her again.

The lowdown: With such a large group of returning state qualifiers, this Kaneland team is loaded with talent and experience. A majority of the team went down to the state meet but Ecker is continuing to develop his athletes as much as he can to have the same kind of success as last year. According to Ecker, in order to contend in the conference meet, the team needs to be consistent throughout the year and continue to develop the athletes in the events they aren’t as strong in outside of distance and jumping events.

The lowdown: Indian Creek is putting out a small team of six athletes in 2016. With a squad as thin as this, much of their success is going to be based off of how their athletes perform individually. Keep an eye on Turner in the pole vault as she is already a school record holder in that event and will look to set a new school record this season.

We’ve got three seniors that are good examples of how we want to represent our program and for the group of freshman.”

The lowdown: The Royals bring back a core group of upper classman that they hope to take back to the state meet.

Included in that group are two athletes who have been to the state meet multiple times – Courtney Carls and Audrey Harrod in 2014 and 2015. There is not much difference from last year’s team so Burks will look to improve on his team’s marks and times from last year and take a group of athletes down to the state meet once again. According to Burks, the group of talented seniors will play a big role in the success of the incoming freshman as well.

“Our outlook thus far is really good.

I like how we’re working and getting through workouts. We have a lot more kids out this year, so it makes it more fun for them. Last year, our numbers were really low, and that helps out if kids get injured we can just plug people in.”

The lowdown: Last season was the first season since Schmidt’s first season as coach in Genoa-Kingston that there was not a state qualifier returning to the team. According to Schmidt, Carly Fischer has the potential to return to the state meet after missing last year’s meet due to back issues. Butler had six points and an assist in the final 3:45, when the Bucks had narrowed a 19-point deficit to one at 87-86.

The Bulls kept pace with Indiana for the eighth and final spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

DeKALB – Donovan Sims had a career day on the mound for the Northern Illinois baseball team and helped the Huskies split their doubleheader against Miami (Ohio) on Sunday afternoon.

The RedHawks won a low-scoring 2-0 contest in Game 1 before Sims shut down the RedHawks in a 6-1 victory for the Huskies in the second game.

The Huskies were shut out in the first game of the doubleheader after recording only three hits against Miami pitcher Cole Gnetz, who threw nine innings with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Northern Illinois (7-20 overall, 3-3 in MAC West) pitcher Ryan Olson joined Gnetz in throwing a complete game himself, but the Redhawks were able to have more success at the plate. Miami (12-14, 3-3 MAC) catcher Hayden Senger played a part in both of his team’s runs after going 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.

In Game 2, Sims stole the show on the mound. Sims would finish with a career-high six strikeouts in his first career complete game. Sims was able to

The Huskies offense came alive in the sixth inning of Game 2 – scoring five runs off of three hits. Kunigonis said his team improved greatly offensively from Game 1.

“Overall, we had a much better game offensively and had quality at-bats,” Kunigonis said. “You can’t control if you get a hit or if the fielder makes a play or not. You can control the quality of your at-bat. Even times when we strikeout, it’s a battle and it’s an eight, nine, ten pitch at-bat and that’s a quality at-bat.

That was the secret to success really.”

The Huskies were led offensively by third baseman Luke Yapp and right fielder Stephen Letz. Yapp went 1 for 3 with three RBI’s and Letz was 3 for 4 and one run scored.

DeKalb soccer draws at Freeport

sports@daily-chronicle.com The DeKalb girls soccer team pulled off a 1-1 tie on Saturday at Freeport against a perennially strong Pretzel team that reached the sectional round last season.

Maddie Hill had the Barbs’ only goal, coming in the 44th minute.

“I thought, essentially, we had a good game,” coach PJ Hamilton said. “I thought Hanna Hickey did a good job in the middle, and did come up with the assist.

“Izzy Pisano, Sam Myers-Miller, Maddie Hill, Hanna all played strong in the middle, creating a ton of opportunities for us in the second half, but obviously wind played a big factor.”

Hamilton said he was pleased with the performance of the whole program

– which included a 1-0 win for the junior varsity team – but thought the Barbs (3-11) had a chance to knock off the Pretzels (1-2-1).

“It was really nice leaving with a draw, but I thought the opportunity was there to come home with the game in the victory column,” Hamilton said. “But that’s football. I like how we played, and we came out with great energy. It was just a really strong team performance and a big step in the right direction.”

The Barbs will open conference play Tuesday at home against Kaneland, which last played on the Barbs’ field in a Class 2A Supersectional, a loss to Notre Dame to just miss a trip to state.

“We’re looking forward to it,” Hamilton said. “We feel with our schedule we’ve been battle-tested, and now we’re excited to see where we rank among the area’s best.”

Upgraded Sox excited for new season

OAKLAND, Calif. – General manager Rick Hahn’s No. 1 offseason priority was to upgrade the worst offense in the American League.

Two trades for infielders Todd Frazier and Brett Lawrie and a handful of other moves later, that goal was checked off.

Manager Robin Ventura’s top spring training priority was to bear down on defensive, base-running and fundamental deficiencies without changing his style or demeanor and becoming a killjoy.

If the mood in the clubhouse and results on the field last month are an indicator – the Sox’s spring execution probably deserved a B grade, and they posted their best spring record since 2002 – that goal also was checked off.

The Sox mashed spring training home runs like never before, leading all of baseball with 51, and, among those on the 25-man Opening Day roster, five errors were committed in 31 games. They didn’t play flawless baseball, but overall it was clean. When it wasn’t, Ventura’s coaching staff went back to the field to get it right.

Or in some cases – with veterans such as Jimmy Rollins, Austin Jackson, Alex Avila and Dioner Navarro added to the roster along with Frazier and Lawrie – some “get-it-right” issues were handled

promptly by the players.

“I couldn’t be more pleased right now with what’s going on,” third base coach Joe McEwing said Saturday before the Sox left San Diego, after winning their final two preseason games, for Oakland to open the season. “Energy-wise and chemistry-wise, in that clubhouse and on the field. It’s kind of like a ballet, everything working together. Everything is in sync.”

McEwing said the best thing about this group is if a mistake is made, it gets fixed without delay.

“What’s great about these guys, if [it goes wrong on the field], they come in like, ‘We’ll straighten it out.’ They’re getting after it for 27 outs and it’s refreshing. We have such a great thing going on right now.”

That’s what brining in heady players such as Frazier, Avila and Rollins, to name three, can do.

“We made a lot of great (personnel) moves,” McEwing said. “The good thing is, there are individuals in there (nodding to the clubhouse) that will make everyone else accountable. It’s nice to see.”

This is a good environment for Ventura, who is running the show as a lame duck manager in the final year of his contract and under the most scrutiny he has faced yet, to manage. Coming off three consecutive losing seasons, he knows he has to win now.

Jury out on epidurals for sciatica Dear Dr. K: I suffer from sciatica, which has caused a lot of pain over the past six month. My doctor has recommended epidural injections, but I hear they have been disproven. Can you help me sort this out?

Dear Reader: Here’s an answer I’m sure you’ll find satisfying: It depends. It depends on what’s causing the sciatica and on which studies you believe.

Sciatica is a persistent aching or burning pain felt along the sciatic nerve.

The two sciatic nerves are the longest nerves in the body. They run from the lower back down through the buttocks and into each of the lower legs. The pain of sciatica can be severe. It can go away on its own, but for many people, sciatica is a chronic condition that keeps coming back.

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is pinched, irritated or injured. Inflammation, arthritis or a displaced disk in the lower spine is often to blame.

Doctors commonly treat sciatica with epidural injections into the spine. (The word “epidural” refers to a particular area in the spine.) The injections contain a steroid, which reduces inflammation. The injections also can contain a long-lasting painkiller.

The different causes of sciatica may be one reason studies come to different conclusions. If a person’s sciatica is caused by inflammation rather than by arthritis, it may be more successfully treated by steroids – because the main effect of steroids is to reduce inflammation.

The best kind of study for any treatment procedure, such as an injection of medicines, is a randomized trial that includes a sham procedure. In this kind of study, every person gets an injection, but only some people, chosen at ran-

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY have been dating an alcoholic for Jeanne three years. He Phillips recently entered a treatment program because after his last binge he tried to kill himself. He seems to be committed to his program and staying sober.

He has requested that I stay sober with him for at least a year. While I’m fully committed to our relationship and support him, I don’t feel it’s fair I should have to completely forgo drinking because he has a problem. I’m not looking to go out and party every night – those days are over for me – but I’d like to enjoy an occasional beer with a friend or a glass of wine with my mom.

When I approached him about my doing so, he became upset. He said if I have this one exception, he believes the exceptions will continue and I will be at his old level of drinking. Do you think his request is reasonable? – Sober In New
