Rain kisses are a Hollywood invention POLL YESTERDAY’S

Being rained on generally makes people miserable, unless it’s July and you’re a kid who doesn’t have a wallet or a phone in your pocket.

Sometimes Hollywood movies include dramatic kissing scenes that take place in a downpour. The man and the woman will be so enraptured that they’re oblivious to the elements, and after a few lines of dialogue, boom: Deep, passionate rain kiss.

I don’t think I’ve ever kissed anyone while standing in the rain. Generally, the only conversations I have with anyone if we’re standing in the rain revolve around the fact that there is water falling from the sky, it is making us wet, and we should seek shelter.

As I hate being rained on, I have carried the same cheap umbrella in my bag for at least five years, and I must have actually used it at least 10 times. Days like Wednesday make it worth it, however.

You feel smarter when you step out into the rain with an umbrella. It’s like you’re telling the world, “Ha, I was prepared for this.”

They looked miserable. I wanted to help them, but I just don’t think you can.

It’s not because I’m afraid of strangers, but because offering someone a ride, even in a rainstorm, might make people wonder – what’s wrong that guy? Is he some kind of creep or something?

So I left well enough alone, and let life go by. They walked on and got wet, and I drove on, dry.

McNuggets tested sans additives The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Like the indestructible Twinkie, Chicken McNuggets are practically a culinary punchline, a symbol of hyper-processed fast food with a list of ingredients that reads like a chemistry exam. But now McDonald’s wants to take at least some of the mystery substances out.

The world’s biggest hamburger chain says it is testing a version without artificial preservatives. It’s the latest move by McDonald’s to try to catch up with changing tastes and turn around its business, which has lost customers in recent years. The new McNugget recipe is “simpler,” and “parents can feel good” about it, the fast-food company said.

Although McDonald’s did not give full details about what is or isn’t in the test recipe, it said the new McNuggets do not have sodium phosphates, widely used food additives that the company has said can keep chicken moist.

Also, the McNuggets will not be fried in oil containing the artificial preservative TBHQ. Chicken McNuggets have become an often-mocked symbol of heavily processed fast food since they were introduced in the 1980s.

The breaded and fried nuggets are made of ground-up chicken rather than intact chunks of meat and are delivered to stores frozen.

The company said it began testing the new recipe in about 140 stores in Oregon and Washington in March. The test was first reported by Crain’s Chicago Business.

PROCESSING PRIORITIES NIU holds town hall on self-evaluation of its resources

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Concerned faculty and staff packed the Regency Room at Northern Illinois University on Wednesday to hear the latest step in a prioritization plan that some believe could lead to the university closing academic programs and laying off faculty.

“We’ve not done this before,” NIU President Doug Baker said. “So there’s kind of the fear of the unknown.”

In October 2014, NIU began a self-analysis of its academic and administrative programs, called Program Prioritization, with the goal of figuring out which ones could be enhanced, left unchanged, consolidated, overhauled or eliminated.

Baker acknowledged fears that the review could mean the university does nothing or that there will be some actions taken. It was unclear if those actions could lead to faculty and staff reductions. NIU is the largest employer in DeKalb County, with more than 3,300 employees and about 20,000 students.

“Even in this difficult [state] budget environment, we’ve not had layoffs or furloughs,” Baker said. “We need faculty and staff here to do our jobs and do the mission of the institution.”

He explained that the program prioritization is more about a long-term look at the university’s resources.

On Wednesday, Baker, members of his cabinet and individuals involved with the prioritization task force addressed a packed audience of stakeholders – including faculty, staff and students – in what was billed as a town hall event.

As part of the initiative, an academic task force of 21 faculty members and instructors, as well as an administrative task force composed of mostly support and operation staff, were assembled. After months of reviewing the university’s offerings, they are expected to release a report Monday that will be available for review on the university’s website.

Officials said it remains to be seen what information will be contained in the reports. However, people will have until May 23 to review them and give feedback. The final action plans are expected to be ready by mid-July and could be reflected in the university’s budget for next school year.

“I think people are grateful that we’ve had a broad and inclusive process that was data driven, as well as strategically driven, to figure out how we spend our money to line up with the mission of the institution. We haven’t had a great process, and now we have one,” Baker said.

The town hall marked the third action this year related to the prioritization effort. After the review and input process, a final report will be created this summer and presented to Baker and his cabinet. Baker and members of his senior leadership team did not give an estimate of when any recommendations could be acted on.

NIU leaders attempted to quell fears of mass layoffs or widespread gutting of programs.

“I know people are concerned about how things are going to be done,” said Provost Lisa Freeman, whose office has led the prioritization effort. “We very much want to continue to use ... data to inform our decision-making. We want to continue to communicate to the campus what’s going on, in a transparent fashion. We want the process to be rigorous and have integrity.”

something Baker said the administration undertook when he was provost and executive vice president at the University of Idaho. Baker came to NIU from that school in 2013. Although some took on roles with the task forces with skepticism, the groups’ reports should help improve NIU, said Matt Streb, chairman of the political science department and co-chairman of the administrative program prioritization task force.

“I do believe in the overall message that our task force report is going to send,” Streb said. “I think it’s going to

be something that is really going to improve the university.”

DeKalb still looking forward City gets knocked out of semifinal round of America’s Best Communities contest

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – DeKalb didn’t advance Wednesday to the final round of the America’s Best Communities competition, but the team representing the city was awarded a $25,000 consolation prize.

The DeKalb team started as one of more than 330 communities that entered the contest. The group advanced to the semifinal round with 14 others, but was eliminated Wednesday during a summit in Durham, North Carolina.

Judges selected eight finalists Wednesday afternoon after hearing pitches from all 15 groups in the morning. The finalists were Chicago Lakes Area, Minnesota; Darrington/Arlington, Washington; Huntington, West Virginia; Lake Havasu City, Arizona; Madison, Indiana; Statesboro, Georgia; Tualatin, Oregon; and Valley County/ Meadows Valley, Idaho. Those communities will continue toward earning the competition’s $6 million in top prizes.

DeKalb team member Cohen Barnes pitched the group’s plan with a frank assessment of what had gone wrong in DeKalb after more than a century of innovation. He touched on the success of the barbed wire barons, the Wurlitzer Company and DeKalb Genetics.

“For 150 years, we were the example of engagement, of innovation, of entrepreneurialism,” Barnes told a panel of judges Wednesday morning during the team’s pitch to be included in the next round of the competition. “But not so long ago, we lost our way. Our problem is over the last 20 years, the DeKalb community has been adversely impacted by globalization and technology. We didn’t realize how vulnerable we were to the coming economic and demographic changes of the 21st century and we weren’t ready.

“The recession hit and taxes soared and family incomes plummeted. We lost sight of the fact that new businesses were not filling the void of those no longer here, and job opportunities had vanished. NIU’s enrollment declined and neighborhoods where students once lived are now filled with families in need of social and economic services,”

Barnes said in his speech. “We missed the opportunity to embrace diversity and, instead, divisions were formed. We forgot about creating leaders and longterm vision was replaced by short-term needs. Engagement in our community declined.

“Then along came the America’s Best Communities competition. What started as an application to a contest has become our plan for long-term change – a plan that is comprehensive, impacting our whole community.”

Although the DeKalb team didn’t advance, it was given a $25,000 check to help implement the revitalization plan the team put together for the city.

The group identified seven projects as part of its economic development plan.

DeKalb already has received a total of $60,000 through the competition.

The projects include a branding and marketing plan; an arts, culture and entertainment corridor; a food hub; a co-working space; a virtual business incubator; a SmartSpace STEAMCenter; and a leadership development institute.

Part of the marketing campaign has been the “#ProudlyDeKalb” movement that has swept the city. The logo is displayed prominently around town and has made appearances on social media, parades and festivals, bumper stickers, window fronts and on the new DeKalb

Maggie Wilderotter, former CEO of Frontier Communications, lauded all the communities that participated.

“America’s Best Communities prize campaign challenged small towns and cities across the country to dream big and pave their own way to a brighter future,” she said. “More than 350 communities answered the call, and now eight remain in the running. In these determined, hardworking communities, people from all walks of life came together to successfully re-imagine their future and reinvigorate their community.

And in the end, we all win, because the wealth of creative ideas coming from this contest will be implemented and shared with communities across the country.”

Even after the finalists were announced, the DeKalb team continued to make plans.

“We’re all sitting here talking about next steps already,” Barnes said Wednesday afternoon. “This was never about a contest. We’re doing this for DeKalb.”

Barnes attended the summit with DeKalb Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Matt Duffy, attorney Brett Brown, Egyptian Theatre Executive Director Alex Nerad, commercial real estate broker Denise Weinmann and

Frank Roberts, vice president of First National Bank. Tom Kuschman, general manager for the Northern Illinois branch of Frontier Communications, was the team’s unofficial seventh member in Durham, Barnes said.

The group plans to return to DeKalb and continue meeting on a regular basis, as team members have done for the past year. One challenge will be getting funding to implement the group’s plans, Barnes said. That will mean seeking out grant funding and money from the private sector. Regardless of the outcome of the competition, Barnes said the #ProudlyDeKalb movement has caught on and the team wants to build on that success. Before Barnes spoke at the summit Wednesday morning, the emcee of the event noted “if you haven’t seen that hashtag yet, you must really be living under a rock.”

“This is really resonating with the community,” Barnes said. “It’s been infectious because it is the right message – it’s something the community wants to get behind.”

The competition was sponsored by Frontier Communications, DISH, CoBank and the Weather Channel. Had the DeKalb team advanced, they would have been awarded $100,000 and a year to prepare for a chance to win $3 million to implement the revitalization plan.

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Seniors are a frequent target for scams and fraud and must take steps to avoid losing their hardearned savings to those out to exploit them.

“Your generation is thrifty,” said Ann Carlson, a former police officer who volunteers with DeKalb County Triad. “They know you have savings, they know you have good credit, that’s why you are targets.”

Carlson and DeKalb police officer Kelly Sullivan spoke to about 20 Barb City Manor residents Wednesday about how to protect against elder abuse and financial exploitation as part of Money Smart Week, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s national financial education program. She told seniors that it was important for them to report fraud attempts, no matter how laughable, to prevent others from falling victim to such schemes.

“You’re not a bother when you call the police department,” Carlson said.

“Don’t be afraid, don’t think it is a stupid question.”

to help illustrate common scams, such as the “grandparents scam” – where a person claiming to be a grandchild calls or emails claiming there has been some type of emergency and they need money right away.

Cases of financial exploitation of seniors tend to be underreported, in part because many victims are too embarrassed to come forward, Carlson said.

Sullivan said people of all ages and backgrounds are susceptible to scams and fraud.

Carlson encouraged seniors to “question everything,” especially calls, letters and emails about winning prizes.

“If they don’t show up with balloons and a giant check, don’t believe them,” Sullivan said.

SUBMITTED REPORT Members of the DeKalb Education Foundation board of directors made surprise visits to 14 classrooms in February to award checks in excess of $15,000 to teachers who had sought grant funding.

The teachers submitted grant applications to support educational opportu-

nities for students in their classrooms.

The awards given included money to support educational field trips, the purchase of supplementary textbooks for classrooms and libraries, life-sized human skeletons, materials to be used in the Early Learning Development Center and the purchase of innovative technology including SPARKlink Air Interfaces,

GoPro wearable cameras, coding robots to enhance STEM curriculum and software subscriptions.

Funding for these awards is made available primarily through the generosity of individuals and businesses within the DeKalb community. Boot Scootin’ and BBQ’n, the foundation’s major fundraising event will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Kishwaukee Country Club.

DeKALB – DeKalb School District 428 will hold its annual wellness fair today where a number of vendors will be on hand and activities will take place that promote healthy lifestyles.

The fair will start at 6 p.m. at DeKalb High School, and is open to school district families.

District officials said this year’s 9th annual event will follow the path of previous ones and will feature local healthy lifestyle businesses that will engage participants in games and offer health-related information. Last year, 31 vendors, including social service agencies, grocers, martial arts instructors, health and beauty entrepreneurs and more participated.

DeKalb School District 428 is buying new textbooks for high school AP U.S. history. After extensive review, the selection committee has chosen “Give Me Liberty,” published by Norton in 2014.

CHICAGO – Dennis Hastert, the Republican who for eight years presided over the House and was second in the line of succession to the presidency, was sentenced Wednesday to more than a year in prison in the hush-money case that revealed accusations he sexually abused teenagers while coaching high school wrestling.

The case makes the former speaker one of the highest-ranking American politicians ever sentenced to prison.

The visibly angry judge repeatedly rebuked the 74-year-old before issuing the 15-month sentence, telling him that his abuse devastated the lives of victims and probably would make it harder than ever for parents to trust other adults with their children.

“If Denny Hastert could do it, anyone could do it,” U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin said. “Nothing is more stunning than to have the words ‘serial child molester’ and ‘speaker of the House’ in the same sentence.”

As he did for much of the hearing, Hastert sat unmoving in a wheelchair, peering over the top of his eyeglasses, his hands folded before him.

Firefighter accused of using cigarettes in arsons

FREEPORT – A 20-year-old northern Illinois volunteer firefighter accused of starting five fires allegedly tossed lit cigarettes to spark at least two of the blazes, according to court documents.

Kenneth Grabow of Orangeville is scheduled to appear in court Thursday for a preliminary hearing on arson and criminal damage to property charges. He remained in the Stephenson County Jail on $250,000 bond Wednesday morning.

Hastert pleaded guilty last fall to violating banking law as he sought to pay $3.5 million to someone referred to in court papers only as Individual A to keep the sex abuse secret.

The judge devoted many of his remarks to describing how Hastert lied to FBI agents when they first approached

(Freeport) Journal-Standard he intends to vigorously defend Grabow in hopes that the volunteer firefighter will receive a fair trial.

Grabow is accused of setting fires at three barns, a shed and an abandoned home in the Orangeville area between April 14 and 19.

Man charged with killing 2 senior apartment residents

LYONS – A resident of a suburban Chicago senior housing complex has been charged with murder in the stabbing deaths of two other residents.

John Arnold is accused in the deaths early Sunday of 73-year-old David Bosseler and a 51-year-old woman whose identity is being withheld by Lyons authorities pending notification of relatives.

Police spokesman Ray Hanania said Tuesday the victims were found Monday at Riverwalk Senior Residences.

Chicago tourism numbers hit record at nearly 51M

CHICAGO– The number of domestic visitors to Chicago hit a record last year, reaching nearly 51 million.

That was close to a 5 percent increase over the previous year.

An announcement Tuesday by Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office said Chicago was one of just three U.S. cities to rack up more than 50 million visitors.

Emanuel’s office said marquee events helped boost the numbers. Those included the NFL draft and the James Beard Foundation Awards. Both events are returning to Chicago over the coming week. And this summer, Chicago and

While the maximum sentence available for the banking violation was five years in prison, federal guidelines recommended probation to six months in prison. Judges rarely go outside the guidelines and usually do so only when the behavior underlying the crime – in this case, sex abuse – is especially egregious.

In addition to the prison term, the judge also ordered Hastert to undergo sex-offender treatment, spend two years on supervised release from prison and pay a $250,000 fine to a crime victims’ fund.

Widow awarded $22.7M for crash that killed husband

CHICAGO – The widow of a motorist who was killed when a speeding truck slammed into his car while he was stopped in a construction zone has been awarded $22.7 million.

Theresa Swenson sued Missouri-based Hussmann Corp. for the May 2012 death of her husband, Aaron. The truck driver allegedly had drugs in his system when he slammed into Swenson’s car on Interstate 294. A Cook County jury of five men and seven women deliberated just three hours before reaching the verdict late Monday.

Attorney Colin Dunn said Tuesday the settlement sends the message that Hussmann must do a better job of monitoring its drivers. A telephone call to Hussmann for comment wasn’t returned.

WASHINGTON – Donald Trump strained to lay out a clear vision of his “America first” foreign policy on Wednesday, vowing to substitute hard-headed realism for what he called a post-Cold War era replete with U.S. national security failures.

Yet the Republican presidential front-runner outlined no strategy for how he’d make the U.S. at the same time a “consistent” and “unpredictable” force in the world. And he didn’t appear to allay the concerns of U.S. and international critics – Republicans at home as well as Democrats – who see him as unfit for the responsibilities of commander in chief. “ ‘America first’ will be the major and overriding theme of my administration,” Trump declared, echoing motifs from his campaign that is now close to sealing the GOP nomination.

Delivering his lines in a more sober, restrained manner than usual to cast himself as presidential material, the billionaire businessman and reality TV star toned down or omitted several of his most explosive – and oft-repeated – barbs. He made no reference to forcing Mexico to pay for a wall across the nation’s Southern border. He also didn’t revisit the idea of allowing Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia or any other country to develop nuclear weapons for self-defense purposes.

Instead, Trump took aim at President Barack Obama’s embrace of an Iran nuclear agreement, Obama’s failure to eliminate the

Islamic State group and other examples of what he termed a foreign policy of “randomness” and “chaos.” His criticism extended to Republicans, too, assailing President George W. Bush for the Iraq war and mocking a foreign policy establishment of “old people” who have scoffed at his diplomatic and national security credentials.

“It’s time to shake the rust off America’s foreign policy,” Trump told academics, reporters and a smattering of supporters in a Washington hotel ballroom after being introduced by one such old voice of the foreign policy elite – Zalmay Khalilzad, a Bush-appointed former ambassador to Afghanistan, Iraq and the United Nations.

“My foreign policy will always put the interests of the American people and American security above all else,” he said. “It has to be first. Has to be. That will be the foundation of every single decision that I will make.”

Trump’s “new direction” in American foreign policy was vague even by the standards of presidential campaigns.

The U.S. approach to fighting IS will be “strong” under a Trump administration, he vowed, offering no indication of troop levels he might authorize. He intends to ease tensions with Russia while negotiating “from a position of strength,” but he wouldn’t say what that means for U.S. sanctions punishing Moscow for annexing Ukrainian territory. He said he’d balance America’s massive commercial deficit with China “quickly,” without a word about tariff policy or existing trade agreements.

Dems block spending bill in Iran nuclear spat

WASHINGTON – Democrats on Wednesday blocked the Senate’s first spending bill of the year in a last-minute fight over a Republican effort to undercut the Iran nuclear deal and scuttle U.S. plans to buy Iranian “heavy water.”

Still seething over last year’s international pact, Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., offered an amendment to the energy and water bill that would thwart the Obama administration if it tries to buy more heavy water from Iran. The administration completed an $8.6 million deal to buy 32 metric tons of heavy water from Iran on Friday.

The sale will help Iran meet the terms of last year’s landmark deal in which Iran agreed to curb its atomic program in exchange for billions of dollars in sanctions relief. Heavy water, formed with a hydrogen isotope, is a key component for one kind of nuclear reactor and has a variety of research, medical and industrial applications.

Democrats called the amendment a “poison pill” that would draw a veto from President Barack Obama. A vote to move forward with the energy and water bill failed to reach 60 votes needed to continue, falling short, 50-46.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the administration was gratified the amendment did not advance.

Earnest took a swipe at Cotton, who last year antagonized the White House with a Senate GOP letter telling Iranian leaders that a nuclear deal with Obama could be undone by his successor.

“Sen. Cotton is certainly no expert when it comes to heavy water. I’m confident that he couldn’t differentiate heavy water from sparkling water,” Earnest said. “His focus is on undermining the

effective implementation of this agreement that prevents Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.”

Cotton responded on Twitter, telling Earnest he was at least half right: “I don’t know much about sparkling water. It isn’t served in Army, unlike in your ritzy West Wing.” Cotton served on active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan before being elected to Congress.

It was unclear Wednesday how the standoff will affect the overall appropriations process as Congress struggles to

complete the 12 spending bills without divisive fights over policy.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has repeatedly made an orderly appropriations process his No. 1 goal for 2016, a key element in his election-year effort to show voters that Republicans can govern. That effort may now be in jeopardy, while over in the House, new GOP Speaker Paul Ryan has failed to accomplish the even more elementary task of passing a budget to serve as an appropriations blueprint because of divisions in his party.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said lawmakers were blindsided by Cotton’s amendment, adding that the proposal breaks a bipartisan agreement not to include controversial riders in the spending bill.

“Why can’t he wait?” to put the amendment on a separate bill that is not part of the appropriations process, Feinstein asked.

Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., chairman of an energy and water subcommittee, said Cotton was “entirely within his rights” to offer the amendment. Alexander and other lawmakers faulted the administration for failing to explain the heavy water purchase or give lawmakers a heads-up before it went through.

SpaceX aims to send capsule to Mars in 2018

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – SpaceX is shooting for Mars.

Elon Musk, the company’s billionaire founder and chief executive, announced Wednesday via Twitter that he plans to send a Dragon capsule to land on the red planet as early as 2018. It would represent a big first step toward his ultimate goal of colonizing the red planet.

The Mars spacecraft will be called Red Dragon, Musk said. No astronauts will accompany Red Dragon on this first test flight.

Musk said he wouldn’t recommend transporting crews in Dragons beyond the moon; its internal volume is only about the size of an SUV. “Wouldn’t be fun for longer journeys,” Musk explained in a tweet.

California-based SpaceX already is using Dragons for space station supply runs, and the company could start flying Americans to the International Space Station by the end of next year.

Musk said the upgraded Dragon is designed to land anywhere in the solar system. The propulsive landing system was tested recently at the SpaceX plant in McGregor, Texas.

Additional details on his overall Mars plan will come, Musk promised.

After successfully landing a leftover Falcon booster at sea earlier this month, he said he would elaborate on his approach to establishing a city on Mars at an aerospace meeting in September in Mexico.

“I think it’s going to sound pretty crazy. So it should be at least entertaining,”

he told reporters.

Musk maintains that reusing rockets is key to reducing launch costs and, consequently, opening up space. SpaceX now has managed to land a first-stage booster on land, as well as on an ocean platform. The recently retrieved booster could fly again on another satellite mission this summer.

NASA, meanwhile, has its own Mars exploration program, intended to send astronauts there in the 2030s. The space agency contracted out station deliveries in the post-shuttle era in order to focus on that long-term goal.

Shortly after the SpaceX announcement, NASA’s deputy administrator, Dava Newman, said the space agency will offer technical support to Musk’s company in exchange for Red Dragon descent and landing data from Mars.

No money will be exchanged, she stressed.

“Sending astronauts to Mars, which will be one of the greatest feats of human innovation in the history of civilization, carries with it many, many puzzles to piece together,” Newman wrote in a blog.

“That’s why we at NASA have made it a priority to reach out to partners in boardrooms, classrooms, laboratories, space agencies and even garages across our country and around the world.”

PARIS – The lone known surviving suspect in the Paris attacks was returned Wednesday to the city where Islamic State extremists unleashed a night of mayhem and charged with a host of terrorism offenses, raising hopes that he may be able to help French investigators trace the pathways of IS fighters thought to be hiding out in Europe.

Salah Abdeslam was whisked in secretly by helicopter after being transferred from the prison cell in Belgium where he had been held since his capture last month. His lawyer, Frank Berton, described a “muscular operation” that had caught even the attorney by surprise, causing him to rush to join his client at Paris’ Palace of Justice.

The 26-year-old faces preliminary charges of participating in a terrorist organization, terrorist murders and attempted murders, attempted terrorist murders of public officials, hostage-taking, and possessing weapons and explosives, French prosecutors said in a statement.

His detention may have prompted other members of the Islamic State cell to rush attack plans already in motion. Four days later, suicide bombers detonated their explosives in the Brussels airport and metro, killing 32 people.

Abdeslam had told interrogators nothing about a new plot.

His return to Paris offered solace to victims of the Nov. 13 bloodshed and raised hopes that French investigators would finally be able to trace the pathways of the Islamic State fighters thought to be hiding out in Europe.

Restoring sanity to the transgender bathroom use debate “I didn’t ask to be this way. All I want to do is be a normal child and use the restroom in peace.”

That’s what 16-year-old Gavin Grimm told the Gloucester County, Virginia, School Board last year as it debated whether to bar the transgender student from using the boys’ restrooms.

His appeal for personal dignity didn’t seem to matter. Nor did the fact that he had been using the boys’ bathrooms without incident until some adults in the community got riled up about the issue. So a federal appellate ruling in his favor was a welcome development that will help to advance protections for the rights of transgender people.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit in Richmond ruled recently that Grimm, who was born female but identifies as male, can proceed with a discrimination suit against the school board in southeastern Virginia.

The 2-to-1 decision orders a lower court to rehear the high school junior’s claims of his rights being violated and to reconsider a request allowing Grimm to use the boys’ bathroom while the case is pending.

The school board is petitioning for a rehearing by the full appeals court. Central to the case, according to the three-judge panel, is the U.S. Education Department’s position that requiring transgender students to use bathrooms or locker rooms corresponding with their biological sex violates federal rights law that prohibits sex discrimination in education.

The ruling comes at a time of heated national debate over transgender rights. A number of states have enacted or are considering laws that infringe on the rights of gay and transgender people. Much as bathrooms figured in past civil rights struggles, they often are used today as justification for these discriminatory laws.

That was the case in North Carolina, where Republican Gov. Pat McCrory invoked the imminent dangers of men using the women’s bathroom by claiming to be a woman. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, railed on the presidential campaign trail that “grown men would be allowed alone in a bathroom with little girls.”

Really? It is transgender people who run the real risk of being assaulted or harassed for being in the “wrong” bathroom.

GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump, not normally a voice of reason, was right this time: “There have been very few complaints the way it is. People go. They use the bathroom they feel is appropriate. There has been so little trouble.”

The appeals court ruling applies to every state in its circuit, including North Carolina. Already facing national and international backlash, the state should take this decision as additional impetus to repeal its backward legislation.

The ruling should give pause to other states thinking about enacting similar, unnecessary restrictions, and hopefully it will lead to a day when Grimm – and other young people who struggle with the challenges of being transgender – won’t have to face hurdles in doing something as basic as going to the bathroom.

Strip Hastert of honorary NIU degree Northern Illinois University officials demurred in November when they were asked about the honorary law degree the university had awarded to J. Dennis Hastert in 1999.

At the time, NIU board member Robert Boey, the only trustee who was on the board when Hastert received the honor, said he would hesitate to strip him of it “unless we really know the details.”

Now we know the details of this sad story. Hastert, in the words of federal Judge Thomas M. Durkin, is a “serial child molester,” who sexually abused several boys who competed on wrestling teams that he coached at Yorkville High School. His abuse left young people tormented, even years after they had grown into adulthood.

In some cases, it set them on a path to destruction.

Hastert, 74, of Yorkville, knew what he had done was repugnant and was willing to pay millions to keep it secret. At Hastert’s sentencing hearing Wednesday, two victims spoke out about how the abuse had affected their lives.

Not long after, Hastert was sentenced to 15 months in prison. That is not punishment enough, however.

Hastert lived for decades without having to face what he did. He rose in stature to

become one of the most powerful people in America, serving as speaker of the House from 1999 to 2007, something that never would have happened had the public known what he had done to those boys.

Another part of his punishment should be stripping him of the honors he accumulated while concealing this secret.

Already, his portrait has been removed from the speaker’s lobby at the Capitol. His name has been erased from public places, including from the Public Policy Center at Wheaton College, his alma mater.

It is time Hastert’s name also was removed from the list of those who have received honorary degrees from NIU. He no longer is fit to be listed alongside the likes of former U.S. Sen. Paul Simon, astronomer Carl Sagan, Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackman, and others who have been honored by the university.

NIU must rescind the honorary doctor of laws degree it awarded Hastert. It need not be quiet about doing so, as it was when it removed the image of Bill Cosby from the wall of the Convocation Center.

The board should let the world know it is stripping Hastert of this honor, and any others it might have afforded him in the past.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

VIEWS Noah Feldman ally existed. That’s the part that makes him a bad person. But neither should have gotten Tracy fired.

The university was smart enough to know this. It’s a public university and therefore subject to the First Amendment. So it doesn’t claim to have fired Tracy for the content of his views.

Instead, the school told Tracy he was being fired for failing to file forms that report on his outside activities and potential conflicts of interest. Most universities have such forms – mine certainly does. They aren’t illegal.

But failure to fill out the forms shouldn’t be grounds for loss of tenured employment, for at least two reasons.

First, non-filing of such forms is a relatively minor instance of failing to follow rules. It doesn’t impinge on the faculty member’s basic job. And it seems extremely likely that this was merely a pretext to fire Tracy for his mistaken views.

Second, it is far from clear that such

forms can be required with respect to published work, especially by a public university subject to the First Amendment. Faculty conflicts of interest arise in connection with published work only if the conflict somehow misleads students or others.

What conflict, exactly, would lead to confusion around Tracy’s conspiracy theory? He is clearly sympathetic to gun rights. Imagine, worst-case scenario, that he was paid by some gun rights group to do the writing – what then? There is no academic conflict that I can see, since Tracy clearly believes what he is writing. Disclosure would be valuable, but its absence wouldn’t seem to be a firing offense. To be sure, academic freedom has some limits, and crank-ism might be one of them. Consider the case of Dr. John Mack, an eminent psychiatrist and professor at Harvard Medical School who died in 2004. Mack had won the Pulitzer Prize for his psycho-biography of T.E. Lawrence, a book I read with fascination as an eager teenager interested in the Middle East and what drew Westerners there.

In the early 1990s, Mack began to argue that psychiatrists should take seriously the claims of patients who reported having been abducted by aliens. Their

claims, he argued, were comparable to other claims of childhood sexual abuse.

You might think this was an elaborate provocation intended to discredit childhood sex abuse claims, but it wasn’t. Mack really believed it. Harvard Medical School responded with an investigation. The committee concluded that it was “professionally irresponsible” to believe in alien abduction, and it criticized Mack’s methodology. But it didn’t strip Mack of his tenure.

If a professor is teaching demonstrable, factual falsehoods to students, that’s a problem, and such behavior could legitimately be sanctioned. But opinion, including radical opinion, is at the heart of academic freedom. It includes Tracy’s Newtown conspiracy.

So consider the following disclosure: I write this column for Bloomberg View.

I am a professor. I believe that professors should have the right to express their views in public formats without being sanctioned by their universities. Is that a conflict of interest? I don’t think so. And if I hadn’t included this disclosure I don’t think I should be fired. See what I mean?

Trumpism makes Social Security and Medicare less safe Donald Trump says Paul Ryan is wrong about Social Security and Medicare. The Republican speaker of the House wants to “knock Medicare way down,” according to Trump, and do the same to Social Security.

Trump says this approach would cost Republicans the election, and also be unfair to people who have paid into these programs. Commentator Michael Lind concludes that “Trumpism” is the future for the Republican Party, which will have to “move left on entitlements.”

But it’s the future only if the future doesn’t know math.

Trump has said he would make Social Security solvent by cracking down on “waste, fraud and abuse,” by cutting foreign aid “to countries that want to kill us” and by making the economy larger.

But the program has a $10.7 trillion shortfall (measured in net present value): Cutting waste and foreign aid won’t get you even a significant fraction of the way to closing it.

And even if we take a leap of faith on the economic impact of a Trump presidency, it wouldn’t close the gap either.

Higher growth means higher wages, and benefit levels automatically rise after wages do. We want higher wages, of course, but they’re not a substitute for getting the program’s promises and resources into balance.

VIEWS Ramesh Ponnuru Trump is right that Social Security and Medicare are popular, and that Republicans seeking to make the programs solvent and otherwise reform them need to be careful. But they already know that, and they have been careful.

Republicans aren’t for cutting Social Security benefits from their current level; they’re for reducing the growth of benefits. Ryan’s Medicare proposal leaves current retirees and near-retirees untouched, and guarantees future retirees comprehensive benefits equal in value to those Medicare now provides at no higher out-of-pocket cost than current law. Ryan and the Congressional Budget Office believe that increased competition would actually reduce out-of-pocket costs and generate savings for the government.

The evidence that being associated with changes of this kind have hurt Republicans is weak. Republicans put Ryan, Mr. Medicare reform, on the ticket in 2012, and did better among senior citizens than they had in the previous election. (They actually made dispropor-

tionate gains among older voters.) James Tracy is certainly a crank and also seems to be a terrible person. But Florida Atlantic University violated his academic freedom when it fired him from his tenured professorship in January, and he should win the lawsuit he’s brought against the school.

Academic freedom isn’t absolute, but it certainly extends to a professor’s outside writing on topics of national importance. The stakes of his case are therefore high – and not just for professors who (ahem) write about politics while still performing their day jobs as teachers and researchers.

The furor over Tracy began when he argued on his blog that the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newton, Connecticut, may never have occurred at all. Skipping over the labored reasoning, here’s his punchline: “While it sounds like an outrageous claim, one is left to inquire whether the Sandy Hook shooting ever took place – at least in the way law enforcement authorities and the nation’s news media have described.”

This view amounts to a highly implausible conspiracy theory and qualifies Tracy as a crank. In support of his views, Tracy also challenged family members of Newtown victims to prove their murdered children had ever actu-

Personal records signify one thing to Kaneland boys track and field athletes. Personal bests mean another.

As the season nears its stretch run and optimism swirls around next month’s IHSA Class 2A state series, however, the Knights realize one of these still can influence another.

“Really, after these last couple weeks, we’re getting PRs,” Kaneland sophomore distance runner Matt Richtman said. “A lot of us have been PRing in a lot of our events time after time, so it’s really been bringing up the whole team. We’re all thriving together.”

Host Kaneland placed fourth in its annual Peterson Prep invitational April 23, but the programs that finished ahead of it – Batavia, DeKalb and Geneva – all compete in Class 3A. Kaneland routinely lauds the depth and toughness of its schedule, but it turns out the feeling is mutual whenever 3A schools encounter the Knights.

“They’re top in the 2A,” said Geneva’s Brian Kuehl, who won the 800 meters at Peterson, “so they have great competition all-around.”

Several key contributors from last season’s sixth-place state meet finisher return for Kaneland, and their motivation has rubbed off on veteran coach Eric Baron’s varsity newcomers.

Junior Danny Walker falls into a separate but no less enthusiastic category. The defending 2A state pole vault champion – who cleared 14 feet, 9 inches to win the title last season – is growing progressively stronger on the heels of shoulder surgery.

Although that has extended the Knights’ wait to reach the all-important “full-strength” category, the team knows it, like everything during outdoor season, will pass.

“It seems like indoor kind of takes a while to come because we have a lot of training with each other to kind of prepare for it,” Richtman said. “And then it really files by once we really get to it.”

Speaking of flying by, Richtman experienced an equivalent during the 3,200 at Peterson. Richtman won the 3,200 in 9:41.69, nearly five seconds clear of his nearest competitor and 11 seconds better than his previous PR. “I really kicked it in the last two laps,” Richtman said, “and I got it. It was a little bit windy, but you can’t have a perfect day.”

Winds grew slightly more mellow as the meet progressed, with high temperatures reaching the mid-60s on a clear, sunny day.

Kaneland, an IHSA Class 2A program that prides itself on a tough schedule, will host the annual Kane County meet May 6.

Kaneland distance runner Again, the Knights were glad to test their mettle against a tough field.

Then again, Kaneland workouts get pretty intense, too.

“We just compete with each other in practice, push each other to better and faster times,” Richtman said.

Lately, even the seemingly mundane task of meet preparation has brought out Kaneland’s energy. Athletes helped groom the grounds April 22, the eve of the Peterson meet, and a healthy group of middle school volunteers assisted during the competition.

The Knights will host the annual Kane County meet May 6 and compete in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference meet one week later.

Those competitions provide a precursor to the state series and what Kaneland hopes is a satisfying climb.

Excellent opportunity Jeffery missing for GM Pace in draft from workouts BEARS

I am impressed with Bears general manager Ryan Pace.

One of the cardinal rules of the draft is never try to evaluate one in less than two full seasons, ideally three. That said, last year was Pace’s first, so we have to ask how he did.

He enters this draft with a bonus top-10 pick at a real area of need, Kevin White (he missed all of last season after the Bears took him in the first round), who would absolutely be the first receiver taken this year. We don’t know what kind of player he will be, but it’s like having two picks in the top 11 this year.

Eddie Goldman is a starter and a good player who may prove to be very good. Adrian Amos started every game as a fifth-rounder and if he takes a step forward this year he will be a good football player as well. Jeremy Langford had a decent year for a fourth-round pick and is about 50-50 to be a solid starter.

There are reasonable doubts about third-rounder Hroniss Grasu, even though he started eight games last year, and Tayo Fabuluje remains an intriguing mountain of a man with good feet.

If White, Goldman, Langford and Amos are productive starters for the Bears for the longterm, it was a really good debut for Pace.

The additions of Danny Trevathan, Bobby Massie, Jerrell Freeman and Akiem Hicks in free agency this year are getting solid reviews, as well, and if they are all the quality starters they are projected to be for the next few seasons, including Pernell McPhee, Pace will have turned over 41 percent of his starting lineup before his second draft, and he may even have legit playmakers in White, Goldman, Trevathan and McPhee.

Best of all, Pace has set himself up really well to swing for the fences in this draft.

I asked Pace how many franchise players he thinks there are in the first round this year, but he wisely chose not to answer. If he had, he would have tipped his hand as to how far the Bears might have to trade up to get one or how far down they could go and still snag one.

solid majority have told me they think the number of blue-chip prospects is between eight and 10, and that doesn’t include Jared Goff or Paxton Lynch.

Because 10 teams in a row never all get it right, it means there should be two or three potential franchise players available at 11.

The Bears can stand pat and get one, they’re in a great spot to trade down a bit and stockpile more high picks from a team that has to come up and get one, or with their extra picks they could be in a good spot to move up a few spots for someone special.

Clearly, they need starters at five-technique on the D-line, safety, running back and tight end, and there is no position they are so good at they can ignore it.

My gut tells me the Bears will trade down in the first round, add some valuable picks and end up with Leonard Floyd, a potential playmaker.

But in doing his best to say nothing in his day before the draft, I think Pace told us plenty.

Asked who Charles Leno’s competition is at left tackle, Pace said, “A couple different options there. One of them is Nick Becton, who we feel good about. Becton is kind of our backup left tackle right now who could compete at that spot.”

In other words, the Bears aren’t exactly desperate anywhere, but they’re thin at left tackle.

If the Bears do pick at 11, the biggest reason could very well be that one of the top tackles, Michigan State’ Jack Conklin or Notre Dame’s Ronnie Stanley, is still available.

If they get one of them, I will applaud Pace some more.

General manager Ryan Pace confirmed Wednesday receiver Alshon Jeffery is training in Florida, as first reported by ESPN. “In a perfect world, would Alshon we like him to Jeffery be here with his teammates and building those relationships? Sure, but I also understand it’s voluntary and that’s the action he’s chosen to take,” Pace said.

Jeffery signed his franchise tender for the 2016 season, which means Pace expects the receiver at Halas Hall at least for the mandatory parts of the offseason, which is the veteran minicamp in mid-June.

“It’s kind of a day-to-day talk as we discuss things with him and his agent,” Pace said. “Right now, it’s voluntary. It’s kind of his personal choice.”

Jeffery missed seven games last season because of several injuries, and Pace said the Bears have been in contact with Jeffery about his conditioning plan in Florida.

“We’re working kind of together on that. He’s communicating with a plan that he’s doing and it’s stressing how hard he’s working and some of the biomechanical things that he’s doing,” Pace said. “Talking to him and his agents, I think they understand the importance – as we do – of him having a healthy season. I know that’s in the front of his mind.”

“Both Larsen and Ramirez are veteran guys who have starting experience and can play guard and center,” Pace said. “So it gives us flex inside. We were looking for that. So we’re going to let it all sort out and battle out.”

When asked about the new players’ impact on Matt Slauson, Pace said the goal “is to just keep on increasing competition.”

U.S. Olympic roster to include Delle Donne

NEW YORK – Four-time Olympians Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird and Tamika Catchings headline the U.S. women’s national team roster heading to Brazil for the Rio games this summer.

The trio will be joined by newcomers Elena Delle Donne of the Sky, Brittney Griner and Breanna Stewart.

Maya Moore, Seimone Augustus, Lindsay Whalen, Angel McCoughtry, Tina Charles and Sylvia Fowles round out the American squad announced Wednesday morning.

The roster gives coach Geno Auriemma plenty of options as the U.S. goes for its sixth consecutive gold medal.

The U.S. has won 41 consecutive Olympic games dating to the bronze medal game in 1992. Taurasi, Bird and Catchings were all part of the gold medal teams in 2004, 2008 and 2012.

Nine of the players were on the 2012 Olympic team.

The three veterans join Teresa Edwards and Lisa Leslie as the only Americans to play in at least four Olympics. Edwards played in five while Leslie was in four.

“The veterans that are going for their fourth gold medal have accomplished an awful lot. They were at one time the new kids, and they are now the veterans,” Auriemma said. “They are great leaders. ... Obviously it’s going to come to an end at some point for those three, but not just yet.”

Eight players were in New York for the announcement, and Wednesday afternoon they participated in an oncourt demonstration with first lady Michelle Obama as part of the 100 days out celebration in Times Square.

Bird was honored to get the Olympic call from national team director Carol Callan, informing the 35-yearold she would be a part of the team for a fourth time.

“It’s an exciting atmosphere for a city when it has two teams capable of [playing in the postseason],” Ventura said.

The last time the Cubs and Sox both made the playoffs was 2008, when both were bounced in the first round – the Sox by Maddon’s Tampa Bay Rays.

The only other time both made the playoffs the same year was 1906, when the Sox beat the Cubs in the World Series.

“I think it’s great for the city,” said Maddon, who professes longstanding respect and admiration for Ventura. “I know he went through a tough gig this past spring training, and I thought he handled it great. I’m really happy for him and their success.”

If you’re looking for an excuse to believe the two Chicago teams can sustain a summer-long ride toward the same fall destination, just look at the pitching staffs that rank 2-3 in the majors in team ERA – both anchored by early Cy Young frontrunners in Chris Sale (5-0, 1.66 ERA) of the Sox and Jake Arrieta (4-0, 0.87 ERA) of the Cubs.

“They’ve made some really nice ad-

ditions this last season,” Maddon said.

“They’ve done some really nice work.

And they have outstanding pitching.

That’s why they’re good.”

On the other hand, if you’re looking for an excuse to flush the whole idea before May, just look at how that fast-starting 1973 season turned out.

Both teams slumped to 77-win seasons, both finishing fifth in their divisions.

Which offers just another reminder of how seldom both teams are even good at the same time. In Chicago’s previous 115 seasons as an American League-National League city, the Cubs and Sox both have finished with winning records only 20 times – only seven since the 1930s.

Check back in July for a better idea what to expect this time around.

That’s when the Cubs and Sox play a pair of games in each park over a fournight stretch, July 25 to 28.

“If we could both sustain this kind of play, it could make for a very interesting summer,” Maddon said. “I think you live in this city, and you have that stuff going on, what could possibly beat that?”

Don’t look now, but the only two big league Chicago pro sports teams still playing in late April also happen to be the two teams leading their respective leagues early in the race for October.

Anybody up for a rematch of 1906?

Too soon? Maybe. At least by a few months.

But the competitive synchronicity the Cubs and White Sox have Joe Maddon pulled off barely three weeks into the season already is a rarity.

The Sox (16-6) beat the Blue Jays on Wednesday, 4-0, and the Cubs’ (15-5) game against Milwaukee was rained out, giving the two Chicago teams the best records in their respective leagues.

The last time that happened this late in the season was May 29, 1973, when the Cubs were 29-18 and the Sox 26-14.

“Diggin’ it,” said Cubs manager Joe Maddon.

His team has been widely considered a World Series favorite since spring training.

The same can’t be said for the Sox, who stumbled to a fourth-place finish last year, endured the strange Adam-and-Drake-LaRoche follies during spring training, and opened this season with several new pieces and a lot to prove.

“Where we’ve been the last couple years, just for us – not necessarily for [the Cubs] Robin – you’re happy for our Ventura fans that we can play a better brand of baseball,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “You hope there can be meaningful games later in the year and make the playoffs.”

And if that eventually leads to a collision course with the Cubs a few months from now? Ventura knows firsthand what that’s like, as the New York Mets’ third baseman during the 2000 Subway Series against the Yankees.

Pitching and defense lead confident White Sox

TORONTO – This head-turning start to the White Sox’ 2016 season has been about pitching and defense – four pitchers combined on their fifth shutout Wednesday night – and just enough hitting.

“If you’re getting hits when they really, really count, your confidence level is going to be higher,’’ catcher Dioner Navarro said after the Sox completed their first sweep of a series in Toronto since 2005 with a 4-0 victory over the Blue Jays Wednesday night. “We’re going to take this into the next series, and keep rolling, man. We have a great team here, and I think we have a great shot of doing great things.’’

Jose Quintana pitched six innings of scoreless ball with 10 strikeouts and Navarro, his batterymate, hit his first triple in four years to drive in two runs and break a scoreless tie as the Sox won for the sixth straight time and eighth time in their last nine games. Their 16-6 record is the best in the American League.

“They have a lot of confidence right now,’’ manager Robin Ventura said of team. “It started in spring training with a veteran group who understands how to play. We’ve been getting the hits at the right time and when you get veteran guys who know how to play but care about each other – they can get on each other, they can hug each other – it’s a

“They understand what it takes late in a game and they’ve been getting it done.’’

Quintana (3-1, 1.47 ERA) got it done by striking out 10 Jays, leaving after throwing 104 pitches to get through six innings. He allowed four hits and let the Sox’ stellar bullpen do the rest.

and eighth before closer David Robertson added a perfect ninth. Robertson struck out two and Duke one.

Navarro’s triple, which took an odd carom off the right-center field wall, came with two outs in the seventh against Jays starter Marco Estrada (12), scoring Melky Cabrera and Brett Lawrie. Austin Jackson followed with an RBI triple to make it, 3-0, and Avisail Garcia drove in the fourth run with a single in the eighth.

The Sox had been held to one hit through six innings, but they have scored 23 runs scored in the seventh inning this season. All four of the Sox runs came after two outs.

The Sox’ lead the major leagues in shutouts, and the five are the most by a Sox team in its first 22 games since they had six in 1973.

Quintana was “unbelievable,’’ Navarro said.

“He was throwing a lot of strikes. He was getting ahead of his hitters with all of his pitches -- fastball, breaking ball, everything. He kept going after hitters.’’

“It was a great matchup,’’ Ventura said. “Q, any time he got in a tough spot he got a little more on it. He probably reached back and grabbed something else, and Estrada took a little something off. Both guys pitched great but we got the hits when we needed them.’’

The bottom of the order did the heavy lifting for the second straight night.

“We still haven’t been hitting,’’ Navarro said. “[Jose] Abreu is in a funk a little bit. [Todd] Frazier is hitting in the low .200s, but we are getting timely hitting, which is the most important thing.’’

The Sox also backed Quintana with defense. Right fielder Adam Eaton continued to shine at his new position with two standout plays, and 37-year-old shortstop Jimmy Rollins went into the hole to make one in the eighth inning.

The Jays (10-13) were swept at Rogers Centre for the first time since 2013.

Gonzalez sent back to AAA Charlotte, Webb recalled

TORONTO – The White Sox returned Miguel Gonzalez to AAA Charlotte Wednesday, two days after the 31-yearold right-hander made a spot start against the Blue Jays.

Right-hander Daniel Webb was recalled, keeping the Sox pitching staff at 13 – probably till the end of the week – but adding a reliever.

Gonzalez, signed to a minor-league contract before Opening Day, has a chance to return at some point as a rotation option. His performance Monday was not impressive, though, as he allowed 11 hits and five runs over 51/3 innings. It took him 94 pitches to get through the first four innings, although he did finish with two scoreless innings and six strikeouts on the night. The Sox rallied to win the game 7-5.

“If we get into a bind and we need

somebody, he’s definitely a guy that you have confidence of bringing back in here to do that,’’ manager Robin Ventura said.

Webb, 26, struggled during spring training but pitched to 2-1 record with a 3.38 ERA over 102/3 innings at Charlotte.

He had two saves, five strikeouts and zero walks in seven relief appearances with the Knights.

“Probably because I’m just going after guys throwing strikes with the mindset of ‘who cares if they hit it?’ ’’ said Webb, who is 7-5 with a 4.54 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 93 career appearances with the Sox from 2013-15.

The Sox (16-6) are in a stretch of 19 consecutive days without an off day and will try to get by with catcher Hector Sanchez, outfielder Jerry Sands and infielder Tyler Saladino as their only bench players before Monday’s off day.

into Wednesday. Matt Albers (0.00), Nate Jones (0.93) and closer David Robertson (0.96) were the ERA leaders.

All the way back

Even though Matt Albers has stepped up as a reliable seventh and eighth inning bullpen arm, having right-hander Jones back as the primary guy to get the ball to closer David Robertson has been big for Ventura. Jones, who returned from Tommy John surgery last August, owned a streak of eight scoreless appearances going into Wednesday. The Sox aren’t loaded with power arms in the pen, but Jones provides a big one.

“It doesn’t feel much different besides the preparation part, doing all my exercises for my back and elbow to make sure it doesn’t follow down the same path,’’ Jones said. “I’m still following the same game plan, attacking the strike zone, trying to get ahead early and putting them away late.’’

NEW YORK – UFC replaced its canceled Conor McGregor fight for another rematch, Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier for the light heavyweight title at UFC 200.

UFC officials announced the replacement main event on Wednesday, several days after Jones beat Ovince Saint Preux by decision in his first fight since he had his title stripped in 2015.

The move solidifies the stance taken by the mixed martial arts giant and its president, Dana White, as McGregor tried to sidestep promotional commitments leading up to the event.

NEW YORK – The New York Knicks have interviewed former Cleveland coach David Blatt for their head coaching position, a person with knowledge of the details said Wednesday.

Knicks President of Basketball Operations Phil Jackson met with Blatt this week, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because details of the coaching search are private.

Blatt’s interview was first reported by Yahoo Sports.

Blatt was fired by the Cavaliers after leading them to the NBA Finals last year in his first season and a 30-11 record this season. The longtime successful international coach was a teammate at Princeton with Knicks general manager Steve Mills.

Stage Coach Players kick off 70th year with ‘The Laramie Project’

andy Paschen of DeKalb has been in more than 20 Stage Coach Players’ productions.

Not only has she performed, but she also has created props, including a stuffed bird on a walking stick and the holy hand grenade in Monty Python’s “Spamalot.”

Paschen is the props master for the Stage Coach Players’ upcoming play, “The Laramie Project,” which opens Thursday, April 28, and kicks off the group’s 70th season.

Paschen said that what she loves the most about being a part of the Stage Coach Players is that it’s like being with family. PR Marketing chairwoman Marie George compares working on a play or musical to preparing for a large Thanksgiving dinner with family.

“Everybody gets involved, and we do what we can to help out,” George said. “We spread the word about performances, we do set construction and cleanup. Everyone gets a role and helps out. It’s easy to grow and stay around for 70 years in such a nurturing environment.”

Performances of “The Laramie Project” will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, May 6 and May 7, and 2 p.m. Sunday and May 8. Tickets cost $12 for adults and can be purchased by calling 815-758-1940.

The play, written by Moises Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project, discusses the aftermath of 21-year-old Matthew Shepard’s murder in Laramie, Wyoming. The play has 11 actors performing six to seven roles each, with a total of more than 70 real-life people portrayed.

“The play is not a comedy, it’s very serious,” Director Tim Ball said. “It will mean a lot of different things to different people. It’s about how humans react when their rights are taken away. Murder takes away a person’s right to live. This is a play about real people and about hate crimes. It’s the story of a young man killed because he was gay. It can teach us that human rights are very important and that we shouldn’t turn away from tragedy.”

“The Laramie Project” will be John Bryar’s first time performing with the Stage Coach Players.

Bryar said the play’s serious topic allowed him to become friends with his co-stars.

“Since the subject matter is so deep, it encourages us to have a better working relationship with everyone in the show,” Bryar said. “It’s not a typical drama, it requires a lot of character focus and a connection to the audience.”

Cornerstone students to show their artwork at DAWC DAILY CHRONICLE

Cornerstone Christian Academy students have been invited to showcase their artwork in the DeKalb Area Women’s Center Galleries during Northern Illinois University’s second annual Artigras.

A free, open reception will be from 4 to 7 p.m. May 7, with live music provided by Cornerstone students.

The theme of Cornerstone’s gallery is “Creation,”

shown through the media of drawing, sculpture, watercolor, mixed media and more. The exhibit is curated by Sarah Mikan, Cornerstone’s art teacher, assisted by high school senior art student Meredith Guio, along with high school sophomore art student Noah Whitfield. They are working on the installation with Anna Marie Coveny, DAWC gallery director.

Burkhalter says she really wanted to choreograph a piece that fit in with the themes already in the show. Her contemporary ballet, “Inside Four Walls,” is a representation of what dancers experience inside a dance studio on a day-to-day basis.

However, Burkhalter says, “It [also] represents the mental aspects of dance – that a dancer’s mind is always in the studio, even when their physical body is not.”

Her piece depicts dancers’ relationships to their dancing, showing the highs, the lows, and the “enduring aspect of the dancers’ long-term relationship to dance.”

The Spring 2016 Dance Concert runs Thursday through Sunday and will be performed in the Huntley Middle School auditorium, 1515 S. Fourth St., DeKalb. Curtain times are 7:30 p.m. weekdays and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. All non-package general admission tickets cost $17 for adults, $14 for seniors, $9 for students and $5 for children ages 5 to 12.

Renowned violinist to teach summer master class at NIU DAILY CHRONICLE The NIU Community School of the Arts will welcome international concert violinist Rachel Barton Pine, who will teach the annual master class at this summer’s Advanced String Quartet Workshop.

Pine has appeared as soloist with many of the world’s most prestigious ensembles, including the Chicago Symphony; the Philadelphia Orchestra; the Royal Philharmonic; and the Netherlands Radio Kamer Filharmonie. She has worked with such renowned conductors as Charles Dutoit, Zubin Mehta, Erich Leinsdorf, Neeme Järvi and Marin Alsop.

Rachel Advanced String Quartet Workshop Barton Pine will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. June 27 through 30, and will begin with a sight-reading party from 7 to 9 p.m. June 21. Workshop participants can improve musicianship and ensemble skills as they rehearse and are coached in two different quartets.

Workshop activities also include seminars on music theory, history and rehearsal techniques. Each student will perform in a quartet at the Rachel Barton Pine master class, and all quartets will perform in the final recital in Boutell Concert Hall at 6 p.m. June 30.

Violin teacher and chamber musician Laurie Rodriguez is the director of the workshop. A private teacher with the NIU Community School for many years, she has directed multiple chamber music workshops in Illinois, Utah and Minnesota.

Students age 12 to 19 are admitted to Advanced String Quartet Workshop by audition. To reserve an audition time, submit a CSA Summer registration form with a $15 nonrefundable registration fee by May 2. Auditions will take place starting at 4 p.m. May 9.

Group seeks singers for June cantata DAILY CHRONICLE

The Celebration Chorale is looking for singers as the group prepares to present “Indivisible: One Nation Under God,” under the direction of Christine Monteiro. All singers are welcome to join this year’s patriotic cantata, whether they are professional, experienced or a novice.

Practices are at 8 p.m. Wednesdays in the DeKalb First United Methodist Church sanctuary at 317 N. Fourth St. in DeKalb.

Newcomers can walk into practice, or contact the church office or any of the members of the Leadership Team. Sally Mullis is the chair, and other Leadership Team members include Julie Turner, Linda Buhr, Pat Winckler, Herb Buhr and Karen Eaton.

This year the patriotic cantata will be at 7 p.m. June 24 and June 25 and 3 p.m. June 26. All three performances will be on the Northern Illi-

nois University campus in the Boutell Memorial Music Hall at 300 Lucinda Ave. This is a handicapped accessible facility.

Audiences have enjoyed the patriotic cantatas for many years. Rich Criss organized the first Celebration Chorale 22 years ago when he was a member of First United Methodist Church.

After he left the community, the Celebration Chorale became a ministry of First United Methodist Church performing Christmas and patriotic cantatas every year. Led by Christine Monteiro, professional musicians accompany the volunteer vocalists, only a fraction of whom are members of First United Methodist Church.

Northern Illinois University School of Theatre and Dance’s Spring 2016 Dance Concert is a mixed repertoire dance show, with three dance pieces under the choreographic direction of faculty members Richard Grund, Blair Burkhalter and Paula Frasz.

Opening Thursday, the Spring 2016 Dance Concert illustrates the many facets of dance expression, including modern, classical and contemporary ballet. Choreographer Rich Grund says the concert “speaks volumes to [the students’] capabilities as dancers, and their ability to perform classical and postmodern works interchangeably.”

“It’s great to see how diversified our dance majors are,” Grund said in

a news release. For his piece, Grund is restaging a ballet classic in “Swan Lake,” 140 years after its conception.

According to Grund, “Swan Lake” to this day is the “classical standard,” and a learning tool for students.

Because Swan Lake’s steps are so difficult, every ballet company is measured by how well they can execute the technical beauty of this masterpiece.

The Spring 2016 Dance Concert also includes Paula Frasz’s modern take on “Of the Joy That Kills.” Through its unique blend of modern dance and theater, this performance piece breaks all the boundaries of typical dance.

Frasz challenged her dancers by creating a modern dance interpretation of a play, using an elaborate

Research determines best practices Dear Readers: In yesterday’s column, I answered a reader’s question about why doctors seem to change their minds about the best treatments for medical problems.

I said we doctors keep changing our minds because we’re human. We sometimes believe things that seem reasonable and for which there is some evidence. But then we find out, as more and better research is done, we were wrong.

I gave the example of a treatment called gastric freezing that was widely touted in the 1960s for bleeding ulcers. With further and better research, the treatment proved worthless.

In my professional lifetime, the standards for claiming a treatment is effective have become higher. I can’t think of an example like gastric freezing in the past 30 years. Yet sometimes we are misled by the first evidence of a treatment’s benefits.

The early returns don’t always accurately predict the final outcome.

In an article in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings, a research team reported on the decade from 2001 to 2010. They noted several reversals of what were believed to be current best practices. Here are some examples: • Antibiotic treatment of diabetic women with bacteria in their bladder; • Use of bed covers to reduce exposure to allergens in adults with asthma; • Antiviral treatment of vestibular neuritis, an inflammation of the nerve that plays a key role in balance and hearing; • Lowering body temperature during surgery for brain aneurysms; • Placement of stents in narrowed heart arteries in people with stable symptoms; • Treating intensively with blood-sugar-lowering medicines for Type 2 diabetes; • Treatment with a medicine called aprotinin during cardiac surgery;

Komaroff • Treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs called COX2-inhibitors (such as Vioxx), particularly in patients with heart disease or risk factors for heart disease; • Placement of tubes through the eardrum (tympanostomy tubes) in children with recurrent ear infections; • Arthroscopic surgery for osteoarthritis of the knee; • Surgery called vertebroplasty for spine bone (vertebral) fractures.

In all of these cases, a reasonable theory had led to relatively small or short research studies that seemed to support the theory. However, larger and longer studies concluded the treatment was of no value.

In other words, many doctors decide on treatments knowing the evidence is not all in. We use our judgment to decide what is best, in the face of what we know is incomplete evidence. For example, I never prescribed Vioxx; I was worried about its side effects. And I did prescribe antibiotics to treat many ulcers for years before that practice was shown to be correct. I got those right. But I prescribed several vitamin and mineral supplements (and took them myself) for years before they were shown to have no value. I got those wrong.

Don’t misunderstand: The great majority of treatments we doctors prescribe are of proven value. But we don’t always get it right at first, and so we change our practice.

My family is excited for me – with one exception. My younger sister, whom I want to be my best woman, says she doesn’t know if she will be able to participate in our wedding because she’s having trouble reconciling her faith telling her same-sex marriage is a sin.

A bridge bid that is made without the normal high-card requirements might backfire when it misleads partner. But it could work wonderfully if it deceives an opponent.

In yesterday’s column, West passed as dealer. When South ended in four spades, West took the first three tricks with high diamonds.

Then South knew that East had the club queen; otherwise, West would have opened the bidding. Today, West opened one diamond -- do you agree?

Although 10 high-card points would not normally justify a one-level opening bid, there was a strong case with this hand. West was naming a powerful suit, he had no rebid problem (a key factor), and if he could find a fit with partner, his void would surely prove beneficial.

After one diamond - pass - one heart, South was right to overcall one spade. He was not quite strong enough to double first, then to show his spades, which typically would require at least 18 high-card points.

North jumped to four spades, getting to the 10-trick with a 10-card fit. But with 5-3-3-2 distribution, this was an overbid.

West cashed three top diamonds.

When East discarded the heart king (top of touching honors as he was not winning the trick), West shifted to the heart nine.

Understandably, declarer drew trumps, then finessed in clubs through West because he had opened the bidding. Here, that resulted in an unlucky down one.
