TODAY’S TALKER STATE, LOCAL GOVERNMENTS STRUGGLE TO ENFORCE “LIVING WAGE” LAWS

SEATTLE– States and cities whose lawmakers proudly passed “living wage” laws are finding it difficult to make sure employers actually pay their workers accordingly.

Seattle and San Francisco, and the states of Oregon, California and New York are phasing in wage increases that will grow to $15 an hour or more.

Evidence of compliance is plain to see in the hoursworked total on most pay stubs, but state and federal laws don’t require employers to routinely provide this crucial detail to the government. Without this data, wage enforcers who are empowered to investigate generally wait until a worker complains.

And many workers – especially those in precarious situations – fear they’ll be fired if they speak up.

“It’s pretty shocking how common the violations are,” said Donna Levitt, director of the labor enforcement office in San Francisco, which began ramping up to $15 an hour last year. Her office has recovered more than $10 million in back wages since 2004.

The new laws are meaningless without proactive

enforcement, labor advocates said, citing research that shows roughly one in four businesses nationwide already cheat their workers out of minimum wages.

“It’s just so pervasive and so rampant,” said Haeyoung Yoon of the National Employment Law Project.

Her group advocates higher fines to give employers more incentives to follow the laws, along with tougher enforcement nationwide.

“There’s just not enough boots on the ground to wipe it out, because the problem is so enormous,” Yoon said.

Without a proactive approach, officials aren’t even sure how many violators are out there.

“We often get the question: What’s the compliance rate?” Levitt said. “We have no idea.”

Enforcement is expensive, but some state and local officials and advocates envision recovering the costs of investigations through higher fines, or anticipating more revenue as more people are paid their legal wages.

SpartanTV offers Sycamore High School students hands-on experience

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – From writing articles, to directing and shooting newscasts, Sycamore High School’s broadcast news club, SpartanTV, is almost entirely student-run.

As Monday’s anchors ran lines under the heat of studio lights, a group of students in an adjacent room counted down, while another adjusted a teleprompter from behind a wall of cameras.

That day’s broadcast would be pushed out to teachers later that night, and shown throughout the district the next day.

Although the news component to SpartanTV is still fairly new, it already has come a long way. Advisers David Olson and Ralph Helm even hope to introduce SpartanTV as a high school course within the next two years, they said.

“For a year, we were using personal camcorders,” Olson said.

“What we were doing two years ago to what we’re doing now is unbelievable. I don’t think anyone thought we would be here in two years.”

An anonymous donor in August provided the club with a professional news studio, and a separate $20,000 grant meant the club could finally afford the equipment it needed.

“A kid made a teleprompter a year ago,” Olson said. “We were doing a video where the person couldn’t memorize the lines and he was like, ‘Come back tomorrow, I’ll have a teleprompter.’ So he went home; he took some cardboard and Plexiglas; and he made a teleprompter for that person to do it.”

Students record their broadcasts on Mondays during their “Spartan stretch,” a period in their school day dedicated to research-based instruction.

Content is then edited and pushed out the same night.

“Right now, I have one student who’s coming in on lunches learning how to [edit],” Helm said.

Surprisingly, students don’t receive class credit for their work on SpartanTV, Olson said. Even those helping produce the school’s paper, “The Spartan Voice,” are doing so on their own time. “[Newspaper] used to be a class. I

To give students a range of experience, the teenagers take turns writing articles, running equipment and anchoring the broadcast. On Monday, 14-year-old freshman Allie

Vidales was hard at work on a story about job opportunities at the Target distribution center.

“Mr. Olson said we should contact the DeKalb County administrator to get more information,” Vidales said.

“I’m not very good with stories, I’m more interested in teleprompting, switching and filming. Everyone

rotates, kind of. They want to make sure everyone gets a fair distribution of doing [tech] jobs in there and writing articles.”

The hands-on experience is especially important for the high school students thinking about college, Olson said.

“It’s good here because some kids, they don’t know what they want to do in college,” he said. “So if a kid can come here and find out, ‘multimedia newspaper is not for me,’ we just saved them $40,000. Some of them, they just want to do this for fun.”

Seventeen-year-old Hunter Thomas knows he won’t major in journalism, but his work on SpartanTV has helped inspire his career path nonetheless.

“I’ll probably do something along those lines, maybe not journalism specifically, but more behind the scenes and the production side of thing,.” he said

Genoa’s ex-Mayor Rood gets probation in sex abuse case

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Former Genoa Mayor David Rood pleaded guilty Tuesday in DeKalb County Court to reduced charges in a plea agreement that allows him to avoid jail time, but will require him to register as a sex offender.

Rood, 83, of the 8800 block of North Rood Road, Kingston, was accused of grabbing and inappropriately touching a real estate agent who was showing him a house in April 2013 in Kirkland. He was charged with battery and criminal sexual abuse. If convicted of felony criminal sexual abuse, he could have faced one to three years in prison.

Under terms of an agreement with prosecutors, Rood pleaded guilty to attempted criminal sexual abuse and was sentenced to 24 months of probation and $750 in fines and fees. If he suc-

cessfully completes probation, he can avoid spending 120 days in the DeKalb County Jail.

In exchange for pleading guilty to attempted criminal sexual abuse, a misdemeanor, Assistant State’s Attorney Megan Brannon agreed to drop the

other charges. She told Judge Philip Montgomery that the victim had been notified of the terms of the deal.

The judge said that Rood would be required to register as a sex offender.

He also ordered Rood to have no contact with the victim and to comply with

all the treatment recommendations contained in a sex offender evaluation.

Rood declined to comment Tuesday outside the courthouse in Sycamore.

His case had been set to go to trial Thursday before he decided to accept the plea deal.

The former mayor faced similar charges while he was in office in August 2000, but was acquitted when a DeKalb County judge said a special prosecutor fell “far short of proving the case,” the Daily Chronicle reported at the time.

In both cases, Rood was accused of grabbing the women and rubbing his body against them while making sexually suggestive noises, court records show.

After the 2000 incident, Rood was asked to resign as mayor by all but one of the city’s aldermen. He refused, but did not run for re-election.

D-427 reviews curriculum changes to meet state mandates

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Sycamore School District 427 will roll out a series of new curriculum mandates, including a cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator training course, beginning next school year.

At Tuesday’s board meeting, Kristine Webster, director of curriculum for District 427, highlighted the state instructional mandates that will most directly affect Sycamore students – all three of which are unfunded.

“None of them, I think, we would argue with the importance of – just the practicality,” Webster said.

“The state doesn’t know what the benchmarks are going to be, what the criteria is going to be or really how often we have to report – for sure by the end of the year they want it, but they have left that more broad.”

Sycamore High School was fortunate in covering most of the required material through a social studies course already in place, Webster said.

“Our U.S. Government class already meets the mandate. There were a few things we had to tweak very minimally, but we were very fortunate,” she said.

Since the district’s schools so closely met the new requirements, no new teachers will be hired to help comply with the mandates.

DeKALB – Police are asking for the public’s help to catch a pair of suspected catalytic converter thieves.

In a social media post Tuesday, the DeKalb Police Department said that during this past weekend, there were several thefts of the auto part reported on the south side of the city. Two photos police provided show what they consider to be the suspects’ vehicle, believed to be a 2015 or 2016 Mazda 6i Touring.

According to police, that is the car the suspects exited as they allegedly went to steal catalytic converters from two other vehicles. In one of the thefts,

police said that as part of the the suspects ruse, they pull their car next to one they plan to steal from, turn on the hazard lights of their own vehicle and the passenger exits and removes the catalytic converter from the other vehicle.

DeKalb police ask that anyone with information or who may have observed anything that may be suspicious that could lead to capture of the two suspects, to call the police at 815-748-8400 Catalytic converters contains metals that can be scrapped for cash. The trace amounts of platinum, palladium and rhodium used in the emissions control devices can fetch as much as $200, said workers at local metal recycling yards.

DeKALB – Dozens of DeKalb School District 428 faculty and staff are receiving special training to help students deal with social and cultural differences, a plan the superintendent said is not born from a controversial Black History Month presentation, but rather has been part of long-term plans.

“This is something that we’ve been talking about,” Superintendent Doug Moeller said.”It wasn’t sparked because of [the presentation], we’ve been talking about doing this for a year,” The district has partnered with Northern Illinois University to offer a voluntary six-week training program that will lead to participants being cer-

With the training, NIU and school district officials said, the district will be better able to do that.

Katrina Caldwell, NIU assistant vice president for student affairs for diversity and equity, explained that teachers and staff will be trained to facilitate “difficult” conversations related to diversity and difference.

“It will be a lot of exercises and activities about learning about themselves and their own identity, learning about their students and their students’ identities, and learning how those may interact,” she said.

Caldwell said about 25 participants will take part in two-and-a-half-hour interactive sessions one day each week.

Then they will receive a certificate of completion. Participating teachers would also get professional development credit. It all comes at no cost to the district, she said.

Moeller said after the assembly at DHS, it became apparent that some teachers at the high school, where the student body is 13 percent African-American and 21 percent Hispanic, were not able to facilitate conversations related to racial, cultural and other differences.

“Many are very competent to do so, but some of them, not so much,” he said.

Starting this week, NIU also will facilitate voluntary, small-group discussions with students after school one day a week.

Lawmakers weigh gun ownership bills

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois’ ability to keep guns out of the hands of people who are mentally ill or pose a danger would be strengthened under several proposals in the General Assembly, but the ideas have raised concerns among gun-rights advocates.

Some of the Democrat-sponsored plans would remove a person’s right to hold a Firearm Owners Identification card, which is necessary to buy a gun in Illinois, if the individual has an order of protection against him or her or if a family member successfully petitions a court. Another plan would require better reporting of cases in which a judge has deemed someone mentally disabled.

Each measure tightens a loophole in existing law, which some lawmakers said could prevent more gun deaths and keep potentially dangerous people from possessing firearms. But some gun-rights advocates say a couple of the plans are too severe and that stricter gun laws disregard the rights of responsible gun owners.

A person may get his or her gun owner identification card back after reapplying within five years of having the card revoked under current policy. A doctor also must testify in court that the individual is competent enough to have a gun owner’s license.

ORDER OF PROTECTION LIMITATIONS

A measure awaiting Senate consideration would require state police to notify local law enforcement when a person has an order of protection against him or her, so those officers can assist in revoking an individual’s gun owner identification. The full House has approved the plan by Democratic Rep. Kelly Cassidy, of Chicago.

Cassidy said her plan could prevent stalkers from owning and possessing firearms. But Pearson, the State Rifle Association leader, said orders of protection are hard to substantiate when it’s one person’s word against another.

Temporary orders of protection can last up to two years, with a chance of renewal, or a judge may grant a permanent one. Current policy requires state police to revoke the gun owner identification card of a person who has an order of protection against him or her, giving an individual 48 hours to turn over firearms to local law enforcement or a licensed relative.

Eighty percent of people considering suicide and over half the number of mass shooters in the past two decades reportedly showed signs of mental illness before an incident occurred, according to the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence. A 2013 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed gun suicides in Illinois increased from 490 to 496 between 2012 and 2013.

Details of abuse could mean prison time for Hastert

CHICAGO – When Dennis Hastert pleaded guilty last year to breaking banking laws, sentencing guidelines suggested that the former House speaker would probably serve no more than six months in prison for making illegal withdrawals to conceal a dark secret from his past.

But after prosecutors lifted a veil of secrecy from the case, the judge made comments that suggested he might impose a longer sentence, potentially putting Hastert behind bars for several years, because of allegations that he molested at least four student athletes when he was a high school wrestling coach.

Word that one of the accusers will speak at the sentencing hearing is sure to turn up the pressure on Judge Thomas M. Durkin to reject defense calls for probation and send the 74-year-old Republican to prison.

If that happens, Hastert, who was second in the line of succession to the presidency after the vice president and the nation’s longest-serving GOP speaker, would become one of the highest-ranking politicians in American history ever to be incarcerated.

Rauner, union go to Illinois labor board over contract

SPRINGFIELD –The Illinois Labor Relations Board is weighing whether negotiations have stalled between Gov. Bruce Rauner and the largest state workers union, a determination that would give the Republican executive the power to impose his own terms for a new contract.

If it gets to that, members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees could be faced with a decision on whether to strike.

It’s under such high stakes that attorneys for both sides began making their cases Monday about whether negotiations on a new labor agreement have reached an impasse. Rauner asked the Illinois Labor Relations Board in January to decide whether that’s the case.

The hearing is scheduled to last through May, and it will be months before an administrative law judge issues a ruling.

Volunteer firefighter accused of arson

FREEPORT– A 20-year-old volunteer firefighter is accused of setting several fires in northern Illinois.

Kenneth Grabow of Orangeville is charged with six counts of criminal damage to property and four counts of arson in connection with five fires in the Orangeville area. He’s accused of setting fires at three barns, a shed and an abandoned home between April 14 and 19.

Stephenson County Sheriff’s Lt. Richard Roodhouse said Grabow was identified as a suspect early on in the investigation after witnesses reported seeing his vehicle near the scene of some of the fires.

Stephenson County Sheriff David Snyders said Grabow had been a member of the Orangeville department for about eight months.

Grabow remained in the Stephenson County Jail on $250,000 bond Tuesday morning. It wasn’t immediately known if he has an attorney.

Woman who faked cancer gets 4 years in prison

ROCK ISLAND – An Illinois woman was sentenced to four years in prison after she admitted to lying about having cancer to defraud thousands of dollars from a fellow churchgoer.

Felica Howard, 44, of Rock Island pleaded guilty Friday to felony theft by deception, The Rock Island Argus reported. She was ordered to serve two years of supervised release after her four-year prison sentence and to repay about $133,000.

Howard is accused of telling a 78-year-old East Moline man who she met at church that she was facing a divorce and a cancer diagnosis. Authorities said the man gave Howard more than $100,000 over two years, which he believed she was using to pay for her medication, treatment and other expenses.

The man, who served as the church’s treasurer, initially arranged for Howard to receive some charitable donations through the church and eventually began providing her with his own money, court records state.

PHILADELPHIA – In a front-runner’s rout, Republican Donald Trump roared to victory Tuesday in five contests across the Northeast and confidently declared himself the GOP’s “presumptive nominee.” Hillary Clinton was dominant in four Democratic races, ceding only Rhode Island to rival Bernie Sanders.

Trump’s and Clinton’s wins propelled them ever closer to a general election showdown.

Still, Sanders and Republicans Ted Cruz and John Kasich, vowed to keep running, even as opportunities to topple the leaders dwindle.

Trump still must negotiate a narrow path to keep from falling short of the delegates needed to claim the nomination before the Republican National Convention in July. Cruz and Kasich are working toward that result, which would leave Trump open to a floor fight in which delegates could turn to someone else.

Trump was having none of that. “It’s over.

As far as I’m concerned it’s over,” he declared at his victory rally in the lobby of Trump Tower in New York.

With Clinton’s four victories, she now has 88 percent of the delegates she needs to become the first woman nominated by a major party.

Clinton kept her focus firmly on the general election as she spoke to supporters Tuesday night, urging Sanders’ loyal supporters to help her unify the Democratic Party and reaching out to GOP voters who may be unhappy with their party’s options.

“If you are a Democrat, an independent or

a thoughtful Republican, you know that their approach is not going to build an America where we increase opportunity or decrease inequality,” Clinton said of the GOP candidates.

She spoke in Philadelphia, where Democrats will gather in July for their nominating convention.

Sanders, in an interview with The Associated Press, conceded that he has a “very narrow path and we’re going to have to win some big victories.”

Trump’s victories in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island padded his delegate totals, yet the Republican contest remains chaotic. The businessman is the only candidate left in the three-person race who could possibly clinch the nomination through the regular voting process, yet he could still fall short of the 1,237 delegates he needs.

Cruz and Kasich are desperately trying to keep Trump from that magic number and push the race to a convention fight. The Texas senator and Ohio governor even took the rare step of announcing plans to coordinate in upcoming contests to try to minimize Trump’s delegate totals.

That effort did little to stop Trump from a big showing in the Northeast, where he picked up at least 105 of the 118 delegates up for grabs.

Despite his solid win in Pennsylvania, the state’s primary system means 54 of the delegates elected by voters will be free agents at the GOP convention, able to vote for the candidate of their choice.

The Daily Chronicle recently examined Schmack’s emails to police, appellate prosecutors and the public defender’s office about the case, in which Jack McCullough was once convicted of murdering 7-year-old Maria Ridulph of Sycamore in 1957.

Nowhere in any of his correspondence does Schmack seem driven by anything other than a desire to get the facts straight.

Schmack has said, both in interviews and in letters, that he considered it his ethical responsibility to have McCullough freed and drop the charges against him.

In that, he did his duty – Schmack had evidence he believed proved McCullough innocent in the 1957 murder of 7-year-old Maria Ridulph of Sycamore, and he refused to relent until McCullough was freed and charges against him were dropped.

That’s exactly what any of us would want him to do if we were imprisoned for a crime that we didn’t commit.

However, not everyone agrees with Schmack’s reading of the facts, in particular the family members of Maria, McCullough’s siblings and other witnesses who testified at McCullough’s 2012 trial whose testimony has been discredited.

Maria’s brother, Charles Ridulph, has asked DeKalb County Judge William Brady to appoint a special prosecutor to review the evidence against McCullough and possibly try him again. Ridulph wants Schmack removed from the case on the basis that he has a conflict of interest.

More than 200 people have signed a petition supporting this request.

Schmack might have put it best, however, when he said in court last week that what exists is “not a conflict of interest, but a conflict of conclusion.”

Is the fact that those who testified, and those who were victims in the case, and those police officers who have spoken on record disagree with the state’s attorney’s conclusions enough to justify appointing a special prosecutor?

Brady left the door open for that when he declined to dismiss the charges “with prejudice” – which would have meant that they could not be reinstated.

But Schmack’s examination of facts led him to conclude McCullough was innocent.

If he is to be removed from the case, it would have to be strictly because he is unwilling to prosecute McCullough again, as there’s little evidence that points to him having a conflict.

That in and of itself isn’t enough. Schmack is the duly elected state’s attorney, acting in good faith. He unseated Clay Campbell, whose office tried this case, in the 2012 election.

Elections have consequences. As luck would have it, there is another election scheduled less than seven months from now.

The voters should be trusted to render their own verdict on whether the right thing was done.

What is Donald Trump hiding?

As Republican voters from Maryland to Rhode Island went to the polls Tuesday, there was a lot they did not know about Donald Trump. Unlike his rivals, he has no history in public office on which to judge his suitability for political leadership.

This has enabled the billionaire to attack politicians, who have to defend political records open for everyone to see, while touting his business record, which is not subject to a similar level of transparency. His business interests are often private, and his required financial disclosure reports aren’t vetted for accuracy, leaving him free to make wild claims about his success.

Trump’s unusual position means that the scrutiny that routinely accompanies running for president is all the more important in his case, starting with the release of his tax returns. Yet Trump also has been the least transparent candidate. His GOP rivals have disclosed tax returns going back at least four years.

Meanwhile, the real estate developer has stalled, puzzlingly declaring that his tax returns are “very beautiful” while offering laughable excuses for refusing to share them with the public.

Trump’s primary defense is that the Internal Revenue Service is auditing his tax submissions. This presents no obstacle to him releasing earlier returns. There is also nothing stopping Trump from disclosing his preliminary tax documents even while the government is reviewing them. The differences pre- and post-audit could be illuminating. So could many other details.

Maybe the returns would provide evidence that

Trump’s business dealings are not generating as much profit as one might expect. Perhaps they would demonstrate that he does not give much to charity, as reporting from The Post’s David A. Fahrenthold and Rosalind S. Helderman suggests. Maybe there would be other surprises.

Trump claims that tax returns do not show all that much. This argues for releasing more information, not less. Presidential candidates have in the past gone beyond releasing personal tax returns.

Mitt Romney, for example, disclosed tax information from the Tyler Charitable Foundation, the entity that handles his charitable giving, during the 2012 campaign. True, information on Romney’s generosity tended to paint him in a positive light. But if the story Trump has told voters is true, shouldn’t releasing information about his business dealings help him? The GOP front-runner has made his business prowess central to his campaign.

Along with his personal tax returns, he should release more hard information about the performance of his private ventures so that voters can judge whether he is the business genius he claims to be.

Trump is not the only candidate who has struggled with transparency. It took Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, a strangely long amount of time to finally release a single year’s tax return.

Hillary Clinton has yet to reveal the transcripts of the speeches she was paid to give after leaving the State Department. But Trump is in a stonewalling class of his own.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Worse still, Priebus offered Trump more support, brushing aside criticism from Charles Koch (“But, you know, certainly [the Koch brothers] have their own activities that they work on. We have ours. There isn’t actually that much intersection between the two”). He falsely insisted there is no money behind a third candidate and it essentially is too late to mount such a run. (Only two states, Texas and North Carolina, have deadlines before the end of June, and those states’ deadlines are open to legal challenge.) Even worse, he minimized Paul Manafort’s gaffe (letting

on that Trump has been projecting a phony image), saying, “So, yes, we think that tone matters and being presidential, it does matter. And I get the sense that they get that.”

Priebus is going a long way toward offending principled conservative opponents of Trump, giving them every reason to abandon the party if Trump wins the nomination. He offers up the GOP as an empty vessel to Trump, indifferent to the damage his nomination would do to its ideological coherence. He is entirely oblivious to many conservatives determined to ensure conservatism has a champion and a party to present its views.

Priebus’s error has been in treating his party like the worst kind of soulless political consultant – taking all comers so long as they win and indifferent to the character of the candidate and the content of his views.

This is fundamentally wrong and amoral. The GOP has a mission that is greater than being on the winning

side in elections. It is the vehicle for conservative principles; a defense of the GOP must be a defense of it as an agent and enabler of conservative values.

Take out the conservative values with a nominee such as Trump, and you’ve destroyed the mission and the soul of the GOP. Separate conservatism from the GOP, and you separate conservatives from the party. It no longer will be an organization lifelong Republicans find worth supporting, with their dollars or their votes.

If Priebus cannot comprehend this and re-calibrate his public comments, he should be quiet. His nonstop presence on TV is entirely unwarranted and merely exacerbates the tension in the party. If he keeps this up, he will be a chairman in search of a party.

Sometimes, race is more distraction than explanation Dear white people: As you no doubt know, the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, returned to the headlines last week with news that the state attorney general is charging three government officials for their alleged roles in the debacle.

It makes this a convenient moment to deal with something that has irked me about the way this disaster is framed.

Namely, the fact that people who look like you often get left out of it.

Consider some of the headlines: The Racist Roots of Flint’s Water Crisis – Huffington Post How A Racist System Has Poisoned The Water in Flint – The Root A Question of Environmental Racism – The New York Times As has been reported repeatedly, Flint is a majority black city with a 41 percent poverty rate, so critics ask if the water would have been so blithely poisoned, and if it would have taken media so long to notice, had the victims been mostly white.

It’s a sensible question, but whenever I hear it, I engage in a little thought experiment.

I try to imagine what happened

VIEWS Leonard Pitts in Flint happening in Bowie, a city in Maryland where blacks outnumber whites, but the median household income is more than $100,000 a year and the poverty rate is about 3 percent. I can’t.

Then I try to imagine it happening in Morgantown, West Virginia, where whites outnumber blacks, the median household income is about $32,000 a year, and the poverty rate approaches 40 percent – and I find that I easily can. It helps that Bowie is a few minutes from Washington, D.C., while Morgantown is more than an hour from the nearest city of any size.

My point is neither that race carries no weight nor that it had no impact on what happened in Flint.

No, my point is only that sometimes, race is more distraction than explanation. Indeed, that’s the story of our lives.

To be white in America is to have

been sold a bill of goods that there exists between you and people of color a gap of morality, behavior, intelligence and fundamental humanity. Forces of money and power have often used that perceived gap to con people like you into acting against their own self-interest.

In the Civil War, white men too poor to own slaves died in grotesque numbers to protect the “right” of a few plutocrats to continue that despicable practice. In the Industrial Revolution, white workers agitating for a living wage were kept in line by the threat that their jobs would be given to “Negroes.” In the Depression, white families mired in poverty were mollified by signs reading “Whites Only.”

You have to wonder what would happen if white people – particularly, those of modest means – ever saw that gap for the fiction it is? What if they ever realized you don’t need common color to reach common ground? What if all of us were less reflexive in using race as our prism, just because it’s handy?

You see, for as much as Flint is a story about how we treat people of

color, it also is – I would say more so – a story about how we treat the poor, the way we render them invisible. That was also the story of Hurricane Katrina. Remember news media’s shock at discovering there were Americans too poor to escape a killer storm?

Granted, there is a discussion to be had about how poverty is constructed in this country; the black poverty rate is higher than any other with the exception of Native Americans, and that’s no coincidence. But it’s equally true that, once you are poor, the array of slights and indignities to which you are subjected is remarkably consistent across that racial gap.

That fact should induce you – and all of us – to reconsider the de facto primacy we assign this arbitrary marker of identity. After all, 37 percent of the people in Flint are white.

But that’s done nothing to make their water clean.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus has gone out of his way to block and tackle for Donald Trump and disparage principled conservatives in his party who will never support Trump. Twisting himself into a pretzel trying to provide cover for Trump, he suggests Trump is just like any other Republican nominee. He has discounted or ignored Trump’s racist language and misogynistic insults and has failed to defend vigorously the integrity of Republicans whom Trump has attacked.

Moreover, Priebus has been mute in the face of Trump’s series of horrific gaffes confirming the billionaire lacks basic knowledge to be president and has no attachment to conservative principles.

Priebus was at it again Sunday during an appearance on ABC News, proclaiming any third-candidate run would be a “dumb idea” and assuring anyone listening the party will fall in line behind Trump. Priebus thus con-

Antiques and design shows today often have attractive pieces of furniture that have been transformed by painting, decorating or removing the original finish. In the 1980s, the transformed look often was created with a layer of white paint encouraged to peel to look old. Today the industrial look is “in,” and shows have old workbenches, industrial tools attached to wooden tables, lamps made of old gears and gym lockers stripped of their original paint. All have been given a modern look by exposing the original silvery finish of the metal parts. InCollect, the upscale website that sells expensive antiques, offered a long rectangular desk with a polished aluminum finish. The desk had been used during World War II. It is made of the aluminum used in airplanes in the 1930sand ‘40s. It was originally painted green (some of the paint is left in a drawer as a part of its history). The desk was hand stripped and polished for about 80 hours. It is more than a desk - it can fold into a box to be moved, which was a war-time necessity. Look at some of the used metal furniture selling for offices or workshops, or scrap metal that can be changed in a do-it-yourself project into unique “modern” furniture. *** Q: I got a Casige toy sewing machine for Christmas in the late 1940s or early ‘50s. A: Casige made toy sewing machines from 1902 until 1975. The company was founded in 1852 by Carl Sieper of Gevelsberg, Germany. It originally made locks for pianos and other furniture. The name of the company came from the combination of the first two letters of his first and last names and the town. His grandson, Carl Sieper II, began making small sewing machines for schools in 1902. Eighty three models were made between 1902 and 1975. Sewing machines marked “West Germany” were made between 1949 and 1975. The value of your toy sewing machine is about $50. *** Q: Are old books of any value?

I have a copy of “Aesop’s Fables” translated from the Greek by the Rev. Geo. Fyler Townsend and published by George Routledge and Sons. The cover looks like leather and has two color pictures of children and drawings of leaves.

A: Some old books are valuable, but it takes an expert to appraise them. The fables were first told about 600 b.c. and didn’t appear in print until 1557. Several editions of the version translated by Reverend George Fyler Townsend (18141900) were published in the late 1800s. They sell online for about only $12 and up. If you want to sell your copy, you can take it to a store that sells used books. *** Q: My grandchild is named Sarah, a nice old-fashioned name.

A: Mugs and small plates for children were popular in England but not in America during the 19th century. Many ceramic factories made them. Some were decorated with names like Hannah, Louisa, Sophie - and yes, Sarah. But children’s tablewares also had sayings like “A Birth Day Gift,” “For my dear boy,” “For a good girl” or other phrases so the mugs could be given as rewards or gifts. Pictures from children’s books, educational decorations like the alphabet or pictures and names of animals also were popular. Some had messages like “Make hay while the sun shines.” The cups helped children learn manners and moral character. You might be lucky enough to find Sarah through an internet search, but the odds are against you. *** Q: I have an old typewriter made by a company called Blickensderfer

of Stamford, Connecticut. On the side of the frame is a shield with patent numbers from July 15, 1890 to April 12, 1892. The typewriter’s letters and numbers are on a cylinder that rotates to the desired key when pressed. Is this of value? Is there a market for something like this?

A: In 1891 George Blickensderfer invented a small portable writing machine that used a cylinder instead of striker keys to print letters. It had a keyboard, but the order of letters was different from the “qwerty” keyboard used today.

The machine was lighter, less expensive and designed to avoid the key “hang up” of other typewriters.

The user could change type styles by changing the cylinder without using a tool. The idea was similar to the IBM Selectric, which came along almost 75 years later. The first models were probably made in very limited numbers since none have been found. The Model 5, nicknamed the “Blick,” was introduced at the Columbian Exposition in 1893 and was made for many years. Later models were deluxe versions of that design, though qwerty keyboards became available. Blickenderfer’s company was successful, but he was hit by a car and died in New York City in 1917.

Attempts to run his company failed and the company went bankrupt. In 1927, Remington bought the inventory and the intellectual rights and introduced the Rem-Blick, which was similar to the Blick 5. Blickensderfer typewriters sell between $300 and $400. *** Tip: If there are raised applied

The Spartans committed eight of their nine errors in a two-inning span, and lost, 11-3, to Kaneland on a windy and cold afternoon at Sycamore Park.

“When you give up that many free bases, you’re not going to win,” Sycamore coach Jason Cavanaugh said. “You’re going to get blown out, and that’s what happened today.”

Kaneland (7-6, 2-1) also struggled in the field, committing five errors – but the Spartans only scored one unearned run. The Knights threatened to score early and often against the Spartans, leaving the bases loaded in the first and the second before stranding a runner on third base in the third.

“We were getting frustrated,” Kaneland coach Brian Aversa said.

“We were getting guys on base and couldn’t get them in, couldn’t get them in. We were waiting for the big mistake and we got it in the fourth and opened the floodgates a little bit.”

Kaneland first baseman Matt O’Sullivan went 2 for 4 with three runs and three RBIs, Jake Marczuk had two hits and an RBI, Preston Havis went 2 for 3 with two runs, Jack Marshall was 2 for 4, and Will Ring added two RBIs in the win.

they’ve got some good athletes, they’re smart and we were realistically just trying to play the best soccer match that we could against a quality program. But we were really not able to finish the final third of the match. We strung together a couple of opportunities, but were not able to finish them.”

Despite being 10-4-2 on the season (1-3 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East) Hamilton still thinks there are plenty of improvements to be made.

“We’re creating a ton of opportunities,” Hamilton said. “But I’d like us to be a little more clean and proficient in front of the goal. That’s one aspect that we’ll be looking to improve upon.”

Sterling is 5-8-1 on the season, 2-2-0 in the NI Big 12 East.

The Barbs will travel to Kaneland on Thursday to try and avenge a 1-0 loss earlier this season.

Hiawatha hangs on: Serena scored seven unanswered runs in the last two innings, but the Hawks hung on for a 9-8 win.

Hiawatha scored six in the fourth for an 8-1 lead and then added on what proved to be a pivotal run in the fifth.

Hiawatha had only six hits, including two by Bart Hall. Adam Spear scored twice and drove in three runs.

The Genoa-Kingston softball team gave Kayti Beauchamp plenty of run support and she did the rest.

Beauchamp finished by throwing a no-hitter Tuesday in a 10-0 win at North Boone.

DeKalb wins thriller: At Morris, Abby Taylor scored the game-winning run for DeKalb, which won, 2-1, in eight innings.

With the score tied at 1, Taylor led off the top of the eighth for the Barbs (11-4) with a base hit and advanced to third on a sacrifice by Erin Karasewski and a passed ball. Morgan Newport grounded out to second base, allowing Taylor to score from third.

Gabbie Farrell had an RBI hit in the fifth to tie the score at 1.

Hiawatha falls late to Serena: At Kirkland, the Hawks led late, but Serena won, 10-7, in extra innings.

Hiawatha was up 6-1 after five innings, but Serena scored five in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the score, then scored four in the top of the eighth for the eventual win.

Madison Marshall went 3 for 4, and Hannah Corn and Jessica Znmanski added two hits each.

Beaudoin went 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI single, and Zach Carlsen and Jason Wittenberg each had two hits for Sycamore. Beaudoin took the loss, allowing six runs in five innings.

“I think that Michael pitched well. Other than being behind in the count too much, I thought he threw the ball well,” Cavanaugh said. “He kept us in the game.”

The Knights’ offense put pressure on the Sycamore defense, with Kaneland only striking out twice in the game.

“That’s our goal, to put the ball in play and make teams play defense against us,” Aversa said.

Despite making nine errors in the first five innings, the Spartans only trailed 6-3 heading into the sixth.

However, the Knights responded with four runs – including a two-run single by O’Sullivan – in the top of the sixth to put the game away.

“We came right back and were in the game, and then we went to the bullpen and the first three runners score and kind of put it out of reach,” Cavanaugh said. “We needed a shutdown inning there and we couldn’t get it.”

Kaneland starting pitcher Jacob Violett earned the win, allowing six hits and two earned runs in six innings, striking out six and walking one batter. He forced Sycamore into a pair of double plays, including when the Spartans had the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the fifth.

DeKALB – Hanna Hickey scored two goals in the first half, and the DeKalb girls soccer team kept constant offensive pressure on Sterling to emerge with a 5-0 victory Tuesday.

After taking first place at BarbFest this past weekend, the Barbs kept rolling. They came out and held the ball in the offensive zone almost the entire first half. Hickey’s goals came at 9:41 and 0:28, giving the Barbs a 2-0 lead at halftime.

The Barbs continued the barrage in

the second half. Bella Bettner, Lindsy Franzene and McKenna Wallin scored in the second half.

“This is our eighth straight positive result,” DeKalb coach P.J. Hamilton said. “We’re playing a good brand of soccer. I thought there was some very good display of leadership, with Sam Myers-Miller in the backfield today.

Hanna Hickey is playing at a very high level. She’s scoring goals and creating opportunities for others. I thought those two had really solid matches tonight.”

In addition to her two goals, Hickey also added an assist on Bettner’s goal.

DeKalb is building a reputation this season of being a well-coached team.

And Sterling coach Brian Cebula, a DeKalb alumnus, feels no differently.

“We know that DeKalb is very well coached,” Cebula said. “They’re quick,

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The score was tied in the top of the sixth inning when Kaneland loaded the bases with no outs against the Sycamore softball team.

Spartans pitcher Izzy Odom retired the two most dangerous bats in the Knights’ lineup in Morgan Weber and Meg Cohrs. But No. 5 batter, Hannah Theobald, made sure the Knights took the lead.

Theobald ripped a double to right-center field, giving the Knights their first lead of the game and one they would not give up in a 14-10 win Tuesday.

“I was just trying to get something in play,” Theobald said. “I was just trying to move them around so hopefully we can win the game at the end. As

The score was tied at 4 to start the inning after the Spartans (4-12 overall, 0-7 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) led 2-0 after one and 4-1 after three. Rachel Goress led off with a triple, then Aly Jesionowski – who started the game in the circle but made it only once through the Sycamore lineup, allowing two runs in 12/3 innings – reached on a fielders choice. Lexi Abruzzo bunted and popped it up just between catcher Mia Richards and diving third baseman Anna Criswell. It was so close to the plate it prevented Goress from advancing home.

But Odom got Weber to pop up to second and Cohrs to foul out to first, bringing Theobald to the plate for what turned out to be her only hit of the game.

“To get those two out, and your facing their best two hitters, but you have to give Hannah credit,” Sycamore coach Jill Carpenter said. “I’m sure Morgan and Meg do not like always having to be the two to do it. It’s unfortunate for us. It’s like we said, you have to push extra hard there. You get the

two toughest outs in their lineup for the most part, you have to push. And we just didn’t get it in that situation.”

Kaneland (13-8, 4-2) committed two errors in the bottom of the sixth as the Spartans scored three unearned runs, with the only RBI a single by Kayley Aase – who was 4 for 5 with a double and a third-inning home run. But the Knights answered with a six-run seventh, aided by three Sycamore errors that led to five unearned runs and a 14-7 Kaneland lead.

“Hannah, when she got to second base, I told her she couldn’t have thrown that ball any better,” Kaneland coach Mike Kuefler said. “It was perfect, right over the second baseman’s head, right-center field. Cleared the bags and gave us the momentum to finish this game off. If that doesn’t happen, I don’t know if we can carry the momentum to come back when they jumped on us again.”

Criswell doubled to start the seventh for the Spartans, then after Foulk walked, Nati Morey launched a home run to left-center field to cut the lead to four, but aside from Aase reaching on a two-out error, the Spartans couldn’t do

anything else offensively.

The Spartans had at least one hit in every inning and 14 overall. Mia Richards, Lexi Gordon and Lauren Wisdom had two hits each, as Foulk was the only Spartans starter without a hit, but she walked three times and scored twice.

“Obviously, defensively we’re still struggling to catch a fly ball at times,” Carpenter said. “We need to make some decisions a little quicker that would keep some baserunners from taking an extra base or two. It’s something we’re going to have to keep on working on in practice.”

Kaneland went in order in the first, but got a hit in the last six innings, finishing with 14 for the game. The Knights scored 12 runs on 10 hits in the last three innings. Jesionowski was 2 for 5 and scored three times, Weber was 1 for 4 and hit a two-run home run to tie the score in the fifth. Mary Clausen and Courtney Davis had three hits each.

Davis pitched 52/3 innings for the win, eight runs – five earned – and 11 hits. Odom allowed eight runs, six earned, in the loss.

CHICAGO – Game 7 of the BlackhawksBlues series drew the largest TV audience for a first-round NHL playoff game on NBCSN. St. Louis’ 3-2 win Monday to eliminate the defending Stanley Cup champions averaged 1.35 million viewers.

The telecast on ComcastSports Net Chicago earned a 19.1 rating, a record for the regional sports network. That means 19.1 percent of homes with TVs in the Chicago area were tuned to the broadcast.

– The Associated Press light of the next day, a first-round loss, against your most bitter rival, after giving up so much at the trade deadline to bolster your team? That’s as bad as it gets in Hawks-land. That’s the reality when you raise the bar so high, with three Stanley Cups in six years, and 10 series wins in three years.

Stan Bowman, who has so masterfully maneuvered around the salary cap in the past few seasons, did exactly what you want a general manager to do at the trade deadline: He went for it.

The championship window was open, and he went for broke.

He landed the top rental forward on the market, Andrew Ladd. He added two depth scorers in Tomas Fleischmann and Dale Weise. He even took a flier on veteran defenseman Christian Ehrhoff, hoping he could be revived the way Michal Handzus, Michal Rozsival and Brad Richards were before him.

Well, aside from a memorable Game 6 at the United Center, the Hawks got precious little out of any of them.

Ladd was a physical presence in the Blues series, but had only one goal.

Fleischmann was a healthy scratch for Games 5-7. Weise had his one shining moment in Game 6, and was invisible for the rest of his Hawks tenure. And Ehrhoff fell behind the once-discarded David Rundblad on the depth chart.

For this, the Hawks gave up their top forward prospect, Mark Dano; a promising and reliable bottom-six center, Phil Danault; a first-round draft pick this June; and a second-round pick in 2018. For a team that will need more and more cheap young players each year, as the salary cap gets tighter and tighter, it’s nothing short of a

disaster.

There’s a bright side. There always is. The Hawks looked tired in this series, getting by on sheer force of will.

They sounded drained. They were uncharacteristically sloppy, and maddeningly inconsistent from game to game, period to period, shift to shift. After playing into June for three straight years, a long summer could be just what they need.

After all, the championship window still is open. It closes a little bit each year, as new contracts kick in, as players with loads of miles get older, as the rest of the league starts to catch up. But Jonathan Toews is only 27. So is Patrick Kane. Duncan Keith will be an elite player for years to come. Corey Crawford is better than he ever has been. And Bowman and Quenneville, despite some missteps this season, still form as accomplished a management duo as any in the league.

In a few years, it might be easy to look back on 2015-16 as a mere blip, a rare stumble. But in the here and now, barring the Hawks’ most remarkable comeback yet, it feels like a lost season.

When success is all you know, failure hits even harder.

No legacy was at stake Monday night in St. Louis. No jobs were on the line, no coaches were on the hot seat, no front-office shakeup was on the horizon. Hockey is hard, nobody repeats, the St. Louis Blues are very good, and even though the Blackhawks were bounced from the Stanley Cup playoffs in seven remarkable games, well, those three relatively new banners dangling from the United Center rafters surely will soften the blow.

But here’s the cold truth: No matter how great this series was, no matter how memorable and epic, no matter how unfair it was that two of the five best teams in the league met in the first round, the Hawks are dealing with something they haven’t dealt with in four years: failure.

A championship isn’t the only way to validate a season. There was no shame in losing in Game 7 of the 2014 Western Conference final on a fluky flutter off Nick Leddy’s sweater.

There’s no shame in losing in Game 7 on the road against the Blues, either.

But looking at it in the cold hard

Sale 5-0 as Sox rout Jays The ASSOCAITED PRESS TORONTO – Chris Sale won again, pitching eight sharp innings and leading the White Sox over the Toronto Blue Jays, 10-1, Tuesday night for their fifth straight win.

Sale (5-0) has won all of his starts this season and leads the majors in victories.

The lefty ace has a 1.66 ERA. Sale carried a one-hitter into the seventh inning, retiring 13 straight batters before Edwin Encarnacion homered. Sale gave up four hits in eight Chris Sale innings, striking out six and walking two.

Dioner Navarro hit a two-run homer, and Avisail Garcia and Adam Eaton added solo shots for the Sox. The three home runs, 15 hits and 10 runs were all season highs for the Sox. Arrieta calls PED whispers “flattering”: At Chicago, Jake Arrieta said it is “flattering” that “some of the best players in the game” are spreading rumors that Arrieta is using performance-enhancing drugs.

The National League Cy Young Award winner and Cubs ace didn’t name names Tuesday but said his teammates have heard rumors from other players that the right-hander has used PEDs to fuel his emergence with the Cubs. As manager Joe Maddon said, “we’ve all become suspicious” in baseball.

“I think it’s funny, because I’ve always been in good shape,” Arrieta said. “I just [stunk] early in my career.”

Arrieta went from hyped prospect to disappointing big leaguer while with the Orioles but has transformed into one of the game’s best pitchers since a trade to the Cubs in 2013. He has two no-hitters in

his past 11 regular-season starts, including last week against Cincinnati.

The 30-year-old Arrieta credited his career turnaround to a comprehensive workout program and eating well. Maddon added “command and confidence” to the mix.

“I threw 96, 98 (mph) when I was younger. And I still feel like I’ll be able to do that for a long time,” Arrieta said. “If people call into question my work ethic, that’s fine, because I know what I’m doing behind the scenes.

“It is somewhat flattering, especially when Jake Arrieta some of those comments are coming from some of the best players in the game.”

Arrieta is a strong supporter of the drug-testing policy adopted in conjunction with the players’ union. Last week, Toronto first baseman Chris Colabello was suspended 80 games for a positive steroids test.

“It’s apparent that guys are still trying to take things, and I think it’s unfortunate,” Arrieta said.

“I think guys will continue to do so unless the penalties are stiffer,” he added. “I personally don’t think guys should [get] multiple chances when they fail a steroid test.”

Arrieta’s numbers – 15-0 with an 0.53 ERA in his past 16 starts – are staggering. Especially because he was carrying a 7.23 ERA when Baltimore traded him to the Cubs in a July 2013 deal that involved journeyman Scott Feldman.

“I eat plants and I eat lean protein.

That’s my gig, that’s what I do,” Arrieta said. “I watch what I eat and I train properly. My mom is [6-foot-1] and my dad is 6-4, so I’m going to be big, regardless.”

Add big flavor to roasted chicken

Spatchcocking isn’t just a fun word to teach your kids to say on the playground. It’s also a great way to get dinner on the table fast.

Also called butterflying, spatchcocking is a simple prep technique that cuts down the time needed to roast a chicken. It does this by changing the shape of the bird, transforming it from a slow cooking football to a faster roasting slab. And the only special equipment you need is a sturdy pair of kitchen shears.

To do this, simply flip the uncooked chicken so the breasts are down. Starting at either the front or back end, find the center, where the backbone runs down the length of the bird. It will take a little oomph at first, but use the shears to cut down the length of the backbone on one side. Once you’ve cut all the way, repeat this on the other side of the backbone, which then should come out easily. If you’re making stock, save the backbone for that.

Otherwise, toss it out.

Now flip the bird over, grab the cut sides and spread the bird open. Press down on the bird between the breasts; the goal is to flatten it as much as possible. Once spatchcocked, the chicken can be seasoned and roasted as normal, but will take less time. A standard 3½- to 4-pound chicken roasted at 425 degrees F. will take almost an hour. A spatchcocked chicken takes about 35 minutes.

Now that you’ve mastered how to speed up your dinner, we’ll help you jazz it up a bit. Why just roast a plain chicken when you could add tons of flavor to it? Here are 10 fresh ideas for making your weeknight chicken dinner way more interesting.

Start with a 3- to 4-pound whole chicken. Remove any giblets and neck from the cavity, then use paper towels to pat it dry. Spatchcock the chicken as described above. Place the chicken in a roasting pan.

Follow one of the flavoring directions below, then roast at 400 degrees F. until the breast reaches 160 degrees F. and the thigh reaches 175 degrees F. Allow to rest for 10 minutes before carving.

1. Citrus-Pepper

Blend 4 tablespoons softened unsalted butter with 2 teaspoons black pepper, 1 teaspoon kosher salt, and the zest of 2 oranges and 2 lemons. Rub the mixture under and over the skin of the chicken and inside the cavity.

Underneath the chicken, place a sliced small onion along with 2 sprigs each of fresh rosemary, thyme and sage. Brush the skin of the chicken with melted butter, then season with kosher salt and black pepper.

Drizzle and brush 1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce all over the inside and outside of the chicken, making sure to thoroughly coat all parts.

Rub 3 tablespoons red curry paste under and over the skin of the chicken, as well as on the inside. Set the chicken over sliced onions and brush the outside with melted butter.

Open a 15-ounce can of coconut milk taking care to not shake it. Rub chicken with maple syrup. Stir together 2 teaspoons kosher salt and 2 teaspoons ancho sher salt, 1 teaspoon chili powder, 1 teaspoon under and over the skin of the chicken and garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1/4 on the inside. Stir together 1/4 teaspoon cayenne, 1 tablespoon finely ground coffee, 1/2 teaspoon cumin, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Brush the chicken with melted butter then rub with the seasoning mixture under and over the skin and on the inside.

10. Parmesan

Stir together 1/2 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese, 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, 1 tablespoon minced fresh rosemary and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Brush the chicken with melted butter, then thoroughly coat it with the cheese mixture.

Chicken: Slice boneless, skinless chicken breasts into thin strips. Add them to the sauce, then refrigerate up to 24 hours. When ready to cook, set a wire rack over a rimmed baking sheet. Coat the rack with cooking spray. Arrange the chicken strips in an even layer on the rack, then set under the broiler on the oven’s middle shelf for 3 to 5 minutes, or until just starting to brown. Flip the chicken pieces, then cook for another 3 to 5 minutes.

If you’re still using teriyaki sauce from a bottle, you’re doing it all wrong. You’re depriving yourself of the awesomeness that is homemade teriyaki.

I didn’t set out to master DIY teriyaki sauce, but my 11-year-old suddenly started craving the stuff. Knowing how simple this potent sweet-savory sauce is to make, I refused to buy it.

It took a few attempts, but eventually I nailed an incredibly versatile and delicious version. And by versatile, I mean I slather it on whatever protein I have on hand – chicken, steak, pork or salmon. I’ve included the basic recipe for the sauce, as well as instructions for using it on each of those dishes.

Meanwhile, pour the marinade into a small saucepan over medium-high and boil for 3 minutes. When the chicken comes out of the oven, drizzle the boiled marinade over the pieces.

Pork: Substitute pork tenderloin, similarly sliced, for the chicken breasts above and follow the same method.

Steak: Cut a 1½-pound flank steak against the grain into thin strips. Add to the teriyaki sauce and refrigerate for up to 24 hours.

When ready to cook, heat a large skillet over medium-high. Add a couple of tablespoons of canola, vegetable or sesame oil. When the oil is hot, use tongs or a fork to remove the steak from the marinade and add to the skillet. Cook for 2 to 4 minutes. You want it barely cooked.

Add the marinade to the pan and bring to a simmer. Cook for another 1 to 2 minutes.

Serve the steak and sauce over rice or noodles.

Salmon: Arrange 4 salmon fillets on a foil-lined rimmed baking sheet. Brush each liberally with teriyaki sauce. Broil on the oven’s middle shelf for 1 to 2 minutes, then brush with additional teriyaki. Repeat this process 3 to 4 times, or until the salmon is just cooked and well glazed, a total of about 6 to 8 minutes under the broiler. Garnish with chopped scallions, sesame seeds or both.

Students support Kick Butts Day 2016 Simon Essay winner named DAILY CHRONICLE Students from the Clinton Rosette Middle School Chapter of “Reality Illinois,” a statewide tobacco prevention program, supported national Kick Butts Day on March 16.

Working with staff from DeKalb County Health Department, seventh-grade ambassador students launched the very first middle school Reality Illinois program in DeKalb County. Reality Illinois is a grant-funded program that empowers young people to work with local governing bodies to adopt policies that create healthier communities related to tobacco policy and prevention. Reality Illinois is all about engaging youth for positive change and the seventh-grade ambassadors are certainly laying the foundation for the betterment of the community.

Jeri-Lamia Farmer has been selected the winner of the annual Illinois Community College Trustees Association (ICCTA) Paul Simon Student Essay Contest at Kishwaukee College.

Farmer, of DeKalb, received a certificate and reimbursement of her spring 2016 tuition and fees from the Board of Trustees at their monthly meeting April 12. Farmer’s essay will be entered in the statewide competition to possibly earn an additional stipend to be used toward fall 2016 educational expenses.

Each community college in Illinois is invited to host an essay competition for its students, select the best essay submitted and forward it to the state-level competition.

The essays were required to be no more than 500 words on the topic “How My Community College Changed My Life.” If her essay is the statewide winner, Farmer will be invited to the annual ICCTA Conference in June.

Research changes disease treatment Dear Dr. K: I have diabetes, and my doctor used to tell me my fasting blood sugar level needed to be below a certain number. Now, he says it’s OK if it’s higher. Why do doctors keep changing their minds about the right thing to do?

Dear Reader: We doctors keep changing our minds because we’re human. Which means we sometimes believe things that seem reasonable and for which there is some evidence – only to find out, as more and better research is done, we were wrong.

Suppose you were living in the 15th century. Every (clear) day of your life you would see the sun rising in the morning in the east, moving higher in the sky, then at midday starting to move lower and finally setting in the west. And every clear night of your life, you would see the moon and stars also moving across the sky. Wouldn’t common sense have told you the sun, moon and stars – the entire universe – revolved around the Earth?

I’m pretty sure that’s what I would have assumed.

I graduated medical school believing I had learned the very best current treatments for different diseases. Of course, new and better treatments likely were to be discovered during my career. But I believed every treatment I’d learned about was the best currently available, and clearly better than no treatment at all.

The first time I recall being disabused of that idea involved a treatment for bleeding ulcers (in the small intestine and stomach), which were a very common problem then.

A surgeon had a clever idea, called “gastric freezing.” He developed a plastic tube with a balloon at the end of it. The tube was pushed down through the mouth

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff into the stomach. Then a bedside machine circulated cold fluid through the balloon.

The very cold balloon froze the lining of the stomach. It made sense this would reduce the production of stomach acid (which was thought to cause and worsen the bleeding ulcer). It also made sense it would encourage the blood to clot and the bleeding to stop.

Every patient on which the surgeon tried gastric freezing told him they felt better afterward. He published the results and went around the country talking about his new treatment. Several thousand gastric freezing machines with tubes were sold around the United States.

Up to 15,000 people got the new treatment.

Then several studies were done in which some people with ulcers were given the true gastric freezing treatment, and some just had the tube placed in their stomach without the freezing treatment.

Thirty percent of the people given the freezing treatment improved – but 34 percent of those who did not get the treatment improved as well. In other words, the treatment was no better than (and maybe a little worse than) no treatment at all. Needless to say, the treatment ceased to be used.

In tomorrow’s column, I’ll talk more about how and why treatments sometimes fall out of favor.

DEAR ABBY a divorced man dating a diJeanne vorcée, “Sylvie,” Phillips who is eight years younger.

I recently learned she had an affair before we met, and it is affecting the way I see her.

The man she had the affair with still is married. I had an affair while I was married, and although I understand how affairs can happen, I don’t condone them. It took me several years to forgive myself for the hurt my actions caused.

Sylvie tells me things are over with this man, yet she continues to do business with him. In my mind she ought to find alternative vendors to deal with. We have spoken about it, and she insists no one else in our area carries or represents the product line he offers.

I feel if she truly is over him, then all communication, both personal and professional, should cease. It’s not that I don’t trust Sylvie, but I believe things might reignite between them in a weak moment. Am I being ridiculous? – Dazed In Wisconsin Dear Dazed: You’re not being ridiculous, but the truth is you don’t completely trust Sylvie when she says the affair is history. For her to sacrifice a necessary business contact because you are insecure would be a mistake.

Dear Abby: My boyfriend of three years slapped me across the face a few nights ago.

He has never done that before, and he promised he’d never do it again. After he hit me, he immediately apologized, but said I was partly at fault because I had taunted and belittled him. I love him very much and know he would never want to hurt me.

We’re both in our 20s and have expressed our devout love for each other. My boyfriend is the sweetest guy and truly makes me a happier person, but I don’t know if I can fully trust and be in love with him after he hit me. I feel partly responsible for what happened that night, but I know I didn’t deserve to be hit.

But once slapping starts, it often escalates to pushing, hitting and more serious violence. One of the hallmarks of an abuser is blaming the victim by saying he/she deserved it, and it is a big, red warning sign.

Because you have said your boyfriend has never shown any other signs of being abusive in your three-year relationship, consider this incident an unfortunate one-time occurrence.

But keep your eyes wide open in case it wasn’t.

In today’s deal, South ended in four spades. West cashed three top diamonds. East played high-low to show his doubleton, then discarded the heart king (top of touching honors as he was not winning the trick).

West shifted to the heart nine. How should South have continued after taking this trick?

Note South’s bid over East’s weak two-bid. Do not pre-empt against a pre-empt. Three spades was an intermediate jump overcall showing a good six-card or longer suit, some 15-17 high-card points and typically seven winners.

West thought about sacrificing in five hearts, but was dissuaded by the unfavorable vulnerability. Still, although the contract could have gone down two (initial club lead, or the heart ace followed by a club shift), it would probably have escaped for down one (spade-ace lead ruffed and three rounds of diamonds for a club discard).

South had lost three diamond tricks, so had to find the club queen to get home. The key clue was West’s initial pass. He had shown up with 10 points in diamonds, so with the club queen surely would have opened the bidding. Declarer drew trumps, cashed dummy’s club ace, then finessed through East.
