WASHINGTON – The Obama administration likely soon will release at least part of a 28-page secret chapter from a congressional inquiry into 9/11 that may shed light on possible Saudi connections to the attackers.

The documents, kept in a secure room in the basement of the Capitol, contain information from the joint congressional inquiry into “specific sources of foreign support for some of the Sept. 11 hijackers while they were in the United States.”

Bob Graham, who was co-chairman of that bipartisan panel, and others said the documents point suspicion at the Saudis. The former Democratic senator from Florida said an administration official told him intelligence officials will decide in the next several weeks whether to release at least parts of the documents. The disclosure would come at a time of strained U.S. relations with Saudi Arabia, a long-time American ally.

“I hope that decision is to honor the American people and make it available,” Graham told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. “The most important unanswered question of 9/11 is, did these 19 people conduct this very sophisticated plot alone, or were they supported?”

Tim Roemer, who was a member of both the joint congressional inquiry as well as the 9/11 Commission and has read the secret chapter three times, described the 28 pages as a “preliminary police report.”

“There were clues. There were allegations.

There were witness reports. There was evidence about the hijackers, about people they met with – all kinds of different things that the 9/11 Commission was then tasked with reviewing and investigating,” the former Democratic congressman from Indiana said Friday.

The pages were withheld from the 838-page report on the orders of President George W. Bush, who said the release could divulge intelligence sources and methods. Still, protecting U.S.-Saudi diplomatic relations also was believed to have been a factor.

Ben Rhodes, President Barack Obama’s deputy national security adviser, said Obama asked National Intelligence Director James Clapper to review the papers for possible declassification.

But Graham, the relatives of victims and some lawmakers think there is reason to further probe possible Saudi links.

Roemer said many questions remain about the roles of Fahad al Thumairy, an official at the Saudi consulate in Los Angeles who allegedly helped two of the hijackers find housing and transportation after they arrived in Southern California. Al Thumairy was later denied entry into the United States in May 2003 after the State Department alleged that he might be involved in terrorist activity. Roemer also wants to know more about Omar al Bayoumi, who was strongly suspected of being a Saudi spy and was alleged to have been helpful to the hijackers.

“We did not discover ... Saudi government involvement at the highest level of the 9/11 attacks,” Roemer said. But he added: “We certainly did not exonerate the Saudis. ... Saudi was a fertile ground for fundraising for al-Qaida. Some of these issues continue to be problems today. That’s why we need to continue to get to the bottom of this.”

Pay phone record convinces prosecutor of McCullough’s innocence

eolson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – By October 2015, the case against Jack McCullough hinged on a critical, unanswered question: Where was the pay phone he used to call Sycamore on the night Maria Ridulph was kidnapped?

DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack already strongly suspected McCullough had been wrongfully convicted in the Dec. 3, 1957, murder of 7-year-old Maria Ridulph. But during a meeting with Maria’s siblings Oct. 22, Schmack realized there was a document with the number of the phone in Rockford McCullough had used to make a collect call at 6:57 p.m.: 2-9297.

Schmack made up his mind to find out where that phone had been located.

He either would confirm or disprove McCullough’s decades-old alibi for that evening – that at the time Maria disappeared, he was visiting military recruiters in downtown Rockford. McCullough said he had made the call from the downtown Rockford Post Office at 401 S. Main St. “Everything else I had looked at pointed to his innocence,” Schmack said. “But the phone number, if it wasn’t where he said it was, would have pointed very strongly to his guilt.”

Emails obtained by the Daily Chronicle through a Freedom of Information Act request show Schmack had doubts at least as early as 2014. In particular, he thought FBI and police reports from the time the crime occurred clearly showed Maria had been abducted between 6:45 and 6:55 p.m., much later than the 6 p.m. time the state had given at McCullough’s 2012 trial.

After he spent the summer of 2015 researching the case, those doubts had crystallized. Schmack now believed there was a very good chance that McCullough had been wrongfully convicted, as he had told Public Defender Tom McCulloch in an October letter.

McCulloch had gone to work, asking a judge to reconsider his former client’s appeal for post-conviction relief.

He stayed in contact with McCullough throughout the process and shared information with him to help bolster his case for release.

But before Schmack took the next step and asked the court to set aside McCullough’s murder conviction, he wanted to at least try to find a record of where the pay phone McCullough had

Sycamore teen collects used bicycles for Eagle Scout project

Once repaired, bikes will be donated to families in need

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Ryan Loitz’s used-bicycle drive was operating like a well-oiled machine Sunday, even if the bicycles weren’t.

The 16-year-old dedicated three hours Sunday to collecting, assessing and tagging used bicycles, which will be repaired and donated to families in need this spring. Loitz is a Boy Scout with Troop 16 in Sycamore, and completing this project could help promote him to Eagle Scout status.

“I kind of just thought up of something that people need, and I like riding my bike a whole ton, so I just kind of combined both of them,” Loitz said.

It was only 20 minutes into the drive, and Loitz already had collected more than half his goal of 50 bicycles. From 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, the Northern Rehab Physical Therapy Specialists parking lot was transformed into a bicycle graveyard. Whether they had tassels or horns, baskets or banana seats, the bicycles soon will look as good as new. So far, the DeKalb housing complex University Village is a top contender for receiving the donations, said Loitz’s mom, Deb Loitz.

“We’re just kind of waiting to see exactly how many bikes he has and where he can distribute them,” she said.

Ryan Loitz began preparing for the project last fall. Once the bicycles have been triaged, he will begin personally making repairs, then partner with local nonprofit Axletree to distribute them throughout the community. “[Ryan’s] been kind of taking the lead,” Axletree worker Aaron Nevdal said. “We’re going to help him more with the distribution, kind of plugging him into our network of local not-for-profits or other organizations that should get the bikes.”

With money left over from a recent spaghetti dinner fundraiser, the Sycamore High School student hopes to not only repair the bicycles, but also buy new locks and helmets for each.

“I’ll feel good about it because I’ll be able to help people in need,” he said, “and, hopefully, they’ll be able to use them as long as they last.”

Born: Aug. 14, 1927; in DeKalb, IL Died: April 22, 2016; in Winfield, IL Barbara K. Mikez, 88, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Friday, April 22, 2016, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.

She was born Aug. 14, 1927, in DeKalb, the daughter of Royal L. and Connie G. (Durr) Kyler. Barbara graduated DeKalb High School Class of 1944; she was a member of First Baptist Church in DeKalb, where she belonged to a Church Circle and was the financial secretary.

She was employed by DeKalb Ogle Telephone Company and later Contel Telephone Company until retirement in 1985.

Barb especially loved her family, their many activities and her church family.

She is survived by her son, Steve Mikez of Lombard; daughter, Vicki (Bob) Faivre of DeKalb; three grandchildren, Landon (Colleen) Faivre of Sugar Grove, Colette (Jeff) Weese of Sycamore and Jake Faivre of Hinckley; five great grandchildren, Ansley, Corinne, Onalee, Cora and August; brother, Bob (Shirley) Kyler of Malta; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Herbert Kyler.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 28, at First Baptist Church, 349 S. Third St., DeKalb, with the Rev. Bob Edwards officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb.

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The Genoa-Kingston school district’s leader is a superintendent of distinction, the state board of education declared as it honored him last week and 26 others from around the state.

District 424 Superintendent Joe Burgess traveled to Springfield on Thursday, where he picked up an award from the during a recognition event co-sponsored by the Illinois State Board of Education, Horace Mann organization, the Illinois Principals Association and the Illinois Association of School Administrators.

A total of 23 superintendents and four principals from around Illinois were honored. This was the second year for the event.

Burgess said he was nominated for the accolade by Hinckley-Big Rock District 429 Superintendent Travis McGuire and the Kishwaukee region of superintendents.

“It really means being recognized by your peers for your service to the profession,” Burgess said of the award. “Any time you’re honored by your peers, it’s pretty special.”

Burgess has led Genoa-based District 424 for six years, but has had an 18-year career as a district superintendent.

“District and school administrators carry out a variety of responsibilities each and every day,” state Superintendent Tony Smith said. “Their commitment to going the extra mile to help students be successful learners inspires us all, and we want to publicly thank them for their dedication.”

The leaders were praised for their work in their respective districts, despite challenges schools faced. Burgess said that chief among the issues District 424 faces is stretching ever-shrinking financial resources.

“You’ve got to get creative,” Burgess said of how the district funds programs and initiatives. “You look for help, and you look for things that are free.”

Burgess returned to school Friday to find that his office had been decorated. The superintendent speaks highly of his team of faculty and staff throughout the district.

“You don’t get an award like this by yourself,” he said. “I see this a lot more as an award for our district and our other administrators, our teaching staff and all the folks that work here, rather than for me.”

And Schmack had the power to subpoena the information.

In the weeks that followed, Schmack and Harrolle worked together to try to find other information, such as records of when the 4-H Christmas party McCullough’s sister said she had attended that night occurred (they never exactly nailed it down, although most agreed the party would have been from 7 to 9 p.m. as most meetings were, and not 5 to 7 p.m.).

They also retraced the steps of police investigators who had interviewed people in Rockford about the phone, and an attorney who was the nephew of the military recruiter McCullough said he had met that evening.

One person Schmack said he never spoke to was McCullough himself, but word of what was happening clearly got back to him in Pontiac Correctional Center.

At a court hearing in January, McCullough tried to shake Schmack’s hand. The prosecutor declined.

Days before he filed a response to McCullough’s petition for post-conviction relief declaring him innocent, Schmack sent a copy to Harrolle and McCulloch. In a March 22 email to Harrolle, he noted it still was in draft format.

“So right now it is for your and Tom (McCulloch’s) eyes only,” Schmack wrote.

Communication between prosecutors and defense lawyers, especially public defenders, is quite common, both sides said. In this case, they said they had a common cause because they needed each other’s help to seek justice.

“It’s more like they were willing to work with me, rather than the other way around,” Schmack said. “They had knowledge of certain pieces of information that they had looked into that I could ask them about.”

A matter of ethics

McCulloch said his office’s work on the case was “a labor of love” that did not come at the expense of DeKalb County residents who needed its help, and eventually McCullough was appointed private lawyers.

He added that Schmack making his actions in the case an ethical issue was the right approach.

“It’s hard to criticize him for that,” McCulloch said. “He’s going to be criticized no matter what, but it’s hard to criticize him for his ethics.”

As for the process that led to what he considers the conviction of an innocent man, McCulloch said when police are convinced they’ve found a culprit, that can guide their investigation.

“Police that think they’ve got a guilty guy and rely on maybe in-

admissible or speculative stuff and think they’re putting together a case,” he said. “They think they’re doing the right thing, even if they’re cutting the corner. I think that’s the problem.”

Schmack expected some of his neighbors in Sycamore to be angered by his conclusions, and many were.

Ken Mundy, a longtime friend of Charles Ridulph and the mayor of Sycamore, called Schmack as a “rogue state’s attorney” in an affidavit filed in court.

More than 200 people signed a petition that was presented in DeKalb County Court on Friday, which read in part “we have lost all confidence in the impartiality and integrity of our criminal judicial system as a result of Richard Schmack’s actions/inactions. ... ” The same hearing ended with Jack McCullough, a 76-year-old man, free to return to Washington state after almost five years in Illinois jails and prisons. Harrolle walked out of the building with him and helped him into a waiting car.

Although many people have said Schmack has shaken their faith in the judicial system, in his view, he had no choice but to do what he did.

Other people see that, too, Schmack said.

“Many people have said, ‘I don’t know that you’re right, but you’re doing it because you think you’re right, so hang in there,’ ” Schmack said.

• If records showed the phone had been anywhere more than a block or two from the post office, then McCullough had lied about his alibi. The foundation of his case for innocence would collapse, and Schmack would do nothing.

• If the phone really was in the post office, where McCullough claimed he had been at 6:57 p.m. Dec. 3, 1957, and Maria hadn’t been abducted from Sycamore until at least 6:45 p.m., then McCullough wasn’t “not guilty” – he was innocent.

Schmack said police weren’t interested in his new theory. In late October, he reached out to Sycamore police, who referred him to Illinois State Police. Schmack also contacted Illinois State Police Special Agent Brion Hanley, who had been the lead investigator on the case.

Hanley never contacted him, Schmack said. Instead, Hanley’s superior, Lt. Cindy Tencza, did.

Emails show Schmack explained to state and local police what he was looking for, and why. On Nov. 3, he wrote Tencza that “because of the obvious allegations of police and prosecutorial misconduct,” they should meet privately.

There eventually would be two meetings, including one with Schmack, Tencza and Illinois State Police Capt. Steve Loan on Nov. 30. That meeting was followed by a terse email from Tencza to Schmack on Dec. 2, advising Schmack to call a state police lawyer in Springfield.

There would be no more police involvement.

“They decided not to do any inquiry into the location of the phone booth,” Schmack said. “There was no major disagreement. They basically said they weren’t going to investigate and that they had talked to their lawyer, and I should talk to their lawyer, too.”

Usually police do most of the investigating for the state’s attorney’s office. This time, it would be the public defender’s office – and its investigator, Crystal Harrolle.

State overpaid DeKalb County entities more than $686K in replacement taxes

Error led to overpayment of $168M statewide to taxing districts

DeKALB – Taxing bodies in DeKalb County were collectively overpaid more than $686,858.32 from the Illinois Personal Property Replacement Tax because of a misallocation error, the state announced last week.

Of the approximately 6,500 districts affected by the misallocation, the overpayment amounts to less than $10,000 for 5,291 of them. But in 10 districts, the overpayment totaled $1 million or more, according to a news release from the state’s department of Financial & Professional Regulation.

The error resulted in overpayment of an estimated $168 million statewide to the taxing districts that

receive PPRT, which is money collected by the state and paid to local governments to replace funds lost by taxing entities when their ability to impose personal property taxes on corporations, partnerships and other business entities was abolished in the 1970 Constitution.

In DeKalb County, three taxing bodies were overpaid by more than $50,000. DeKalb School District 428 was overpaid by $164,969.09, Sycamore School District 427 got $91,545.51 extra, and DeKalb County was paid an additional $74,906.61.

DeKalb County Administrator Gary Hanson said the county likely will have to pay back the money out of its reserve funds.

“It puts a hole in our reserves,” he said. “It’s certainly a noticeable amount.”

Hanson said paying the money

back was frustrating in light of the fact that state legislators have failed to pass a budget for the year.

“We are certainly sensitive to the impact recouping these funds will have on some of our taxing districts,” IDOR Director Connie Beard said in the news release. “We will be working with the impacted taxing districts to establish a plan to recapture the funds over an extended period of time.”

Kathy Countryman, superintendent of Sycamore School District 427, also was frustrated after learning the district was overpaid $91,545.51.

The district has been struggling to cut spending as part of the $3.8 million budget reduction plan, which is scheduled to balance the district’s budget by the end of next school year. The cutbacks included layoffs this year.

Road closed after semitrailer hits utility pole in Sandwich

SANDWICH – Traffic on Somonauk Road between Chicago and Pine roads was shut down after a semitruck and tanker filled with nitrogen crashed into a utility pole Sunday morning.

Christopher S. Wilson, 35, of the 4600 block of 23rd Road, Leland, was driving north on Somonauk Road in a 2011 Kenworth semitruck when he drove onto the shoulder and lost control of the vehicle, according to a news release.

The semitruck hit a mailbox and a high-voltage ComEd utility pole. The pole was severely damaged from the impact, but Wilson was not injured and has not been cited, according to the news release.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Somonauk police, and the Sandwich Fire Department all responded to the call. Traffic was closed into the evening as ComEd worked to repair the pole. ComEd showed no power outages in the area.

Countryman said it wasn’t immediately clear how the overpayment would affect the district, in part because it depends on how the money will be repaid.

Regardless of how the repayment is structured, “it’s a decrease in revenue,” she said.

The miscalculation occurred following statutory change to tax Form IL-1000 and revisions to Forms IL1065 and IL-1120-ST, which caused calculation errors. A recent tax system modernization initiative at the Illinois Department of Revenue designed to enhance accuracy and efficiency uncovered the misallocation errors, which started in 2014 during former Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration, according to the news release.

Illinois seeks to limit use of solitary confinement

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Brian Nelson’s years in solitary confinement left him terrified of other people, and he said he still can taste the concrete dust from his cell, even though he’s been free since 2010.

The 51-year-old is afraid to ride the bus, he takes five psychotropic drugs and sees a psychiatrist every week.

Even when he’s at a park surrounded by grass, he said everything starts turning gray, and he remembers how tiny air pockets in the walls kicked up dust whenever he would clean his cell at a now-shuttered maximum security prison in Tamms, in Illinois’ southern tip. He was confined there for the final 12 years of a 26-year sentence for murder and armed robbery.

“Those four walls beat me down so bad,” he told members of an Illinois House committee during a recent emotional hearing on the state’s solitary confinement practices.

Stories such as Nelson’s have led Illinois lawmakers to push prisons to restrict the use of solitary confinement, joining a national movement that has policymakers rethinking the longstanding form of punishment that critics say has a profound psychological impact on inmates.

University adding major in brewing amid craft beer boom

CARBONDALE – An Illinois university has a new accredited degree in fermentation science to train future brewers, distillers and vintners.

The state Board of Higher Education approved Southern Illinois University’s new Bachelor of Science degree in March, The Southern Illinoisan reported.

Matt McCarroll, director of the Fermentation Science Institute at the university, said rapid growth in craft brewing has led to demand for trained

more than five consecutive days and five total days during a 150-day period.

That would be a dramatic change from the current rules, which allow prisons to isolate inmates for weeks or years at a time.

The bill, which received the House committee’s initial approval on Wednesday, also would require prisons to allow inmates in solitary to spend four hours a day outside of their cells. The measure awaits a vote by the full chamber.

“If a bill like this passed, it would be a real milestone in solitary reform,” said Jean Casella, the co-director of Solitary Watch, a Washington, D.C.based group that monitors the use of solitary confinement nationally.

State corrections officials oppose the measure, telling lawmakers it would go too far and that they want the chance to change things on their own.

“There are aspects, quite a few aspects of the bill, that seriously diminish the department’s ability to separate the most violent offenders from the general population,” said Mike Atchison, the chief of operations at the Illinois Department of Corrections. He said the department is finalizing new rules to reduce the use of solitary confinement.

Ford expressed little faith in the department’s pledge to make changes.

“I’m committed to getting it right, but I’m not committed to waiting for you to do it right,” he said at the hearing.

Fermentation science involves chemistry, plant biology, microbiology and agricultural sciences. McCarroll said programs similar to the one at Southern Illinois University are concentrated on the West Coast.

Suburban Chicago pastor charged with sex abuse of child

ST. CHARLES – Prosecutors said a suburban Chicago pastor has been charged with sexually abusing a child at his church in North Aurora.

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office said Saturday that 39-year-old Ralphael J. Robinson of Aurora is charged with one count of criminal sexual assault and one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

They said the abuse occurred April 18 at Kingdom Church in

part of a settlement that U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin called “historic.”

The judge cited literature saying inmates in solitary exhibit symptoms including hypersensitivity to stimuli, hallucinations, increased anxiety, lack of impulse control, severe and chronic depression, appetite and weight loss, heart palpitations, sleep problems and depressed brain function.

As many as 82,000 inmates are in solitary on any given day, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Illinois had about 1,830 inmates in solitary confinement as of April 14 for disciplinary reasons. An additional 148 are there for their own safety or other reasons. The state has an estimated 45,000 inmates overall, meaning Illinois is at the daily national average of about 4.4 percent for prisoners in segregation, according to federal data.

Illinois opponents of solitary confinement say many inmates are put there for minor infractions. But the most recent breakdown available, which the state provided last year to the Uptown People’s Law Center, is from 2008. The group, where Nelson now works to help inmates find legal representation, is suing Illinois over its use of solitary confinement.

The 2008 figures show that out of the 12,332 inmates placed in segregation that year, nearly a third were punished for violating rules or disobeying an order.

Robinson surrendered to police Friday after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He appeared in court Saturday morning and was being held at the Kane County jail on $100,000 bail.

It wasn’t clear late Saturday whether Robinson has an attorney who could comment on the charges on his behalf.

Kirk questions county housing agency payments

CAIRO – U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk is asking the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s inspector general to look into the nearly $20 million in federal funds given the Alexander County Housing Authority over a seven-year period.

The Southern Illinoisan in Carbondale reported that Kirk, in a letter sent last week, asked why the housing authority continued to receive funds despite indications the money was being misused by staff.

The Southern Illinoisan reported various HUD documents from 2014, 2015 and early 2016 detailed mounting concerns over mismanagement and neglect of core duties by housing authority staff.

Among issues cited in a September 2014 review, for example, were excess travel for unnecessary training conferences, inappropriate payments to the former executive director after his retirement, and inappropriate payments to employees in early retirement buyouts.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump surged Sunday toward another round of pivotal presidential primaries as their party leaders faced new questions about internal divisions that could complicate their nominees’ general election chances.

With less than 48 hours before voting begins across five Northeastern states, GOP front-runner Donald Trump looked to Tuesday’s contests, where he’s poised to do well, and to a foreign policy speech later in the week. Republican challenger Ted Cruz, meanwhile, abandoned the Tuesday states and instead campaigned in Indiana, which votes May 3.

On the Democratic side, underdog Bernie Sanders rallied thousands of voters in Rhode Island, looking to the smallest state in the nation for momentum even as he appeared to soften his attacks on Clinton.

“If Secretary Clinton is

the nominee – and we’re not giving this thing up, we’re going all the way to California – but if she is the nominee, I would hope that she puts together the strongest progressive agenda,” Sanders said on ABC’s “This Week” before courting voters in Rhode Island’s capital city.

Clinton hoped Tuesday’s contests in Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland and Delaware would mark a turning point in her quest for the Democratic nomination. Victories in four or five states would all but cripple Sanders’ White House bid.

The former secretary of state went to two Philadelphia church services attended largely by African-Americans ahead of the primary in Pennsylvania, Tuesday’s top delegate prize. The five states together offer 384 delegates, a trove that would put her only about 200 delegates short of the majority needed to clinch the nomination.

With 172 delegates at stake Tuesday on the Republican side, Trump could take a significant step toward his party’s delegate majority with the dominant performance that many polls predict. His rivals, Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich, have been mathematically eliminated from earning the necessary 1,237 delegates and are instead trying to block Trump from the majority to force a contested national convention in July.

A lovely plan to make our currency current The usual concern of an editorial page is government ineptitude or corruption, but it is also our occasional pleasant duty to call attention to cases of government competence – the most recent of which is Treasury Secretary Jack Lew’s proposed redesign of U.S. currency.

In fact, “competent” is too weak an encomium for Lew’s elegant handling of a sensitive task – to include images of women and minorities on heretofore white-male-dominated paper money.

In responding to a groundswell that began with Internet-based petition drives to replace Andrew Jackson’s image on the $20 bill with that of a woman, Lew had to navigate all the treacherous crosscurrents that characterize identity politics in 21st-century America.

The hallmark of Lew’s plan is addition, not subtraction; to embroider ever more of the country’s complex history, and the characters who made it, into these most widely used of government documents – as opposed to purging them or dumbing them down. Harriet Tubman, the great leader of the Underground Railroad and hero of the Union intelligence effort during the Civil War, will take Jackson’s place on the front of the $20 bill; she becomes the first woman so honored on paper currency in more than a century, and the first African-American. However, Jackson’s image will be retained in a redesigned reverse side of the bill – due recognition of his pivotal presidency and military leadership and, perhaps, a conversation-starter about his darker side as a slaveholder and oppressor of Native Americans.

Meanwhile, Abraham Lincoln and Hamilton will remain on the front of the $5 and $10 bills, respectively, whose reverse sides will feature new engravings of historic democracy-expanding events at the Lincoln Memorial and Treasury building, including specific images of their protagonists: the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.; Marian Anderson; Eleanor Roosevelt; women’s suffrage leaders. Executed appropriately, these more artistically intricate bills promise to be not only more reflective of America’s diversity but also beautiful.

To be sure, it will be a long time before this good plan takes effect. Not until 2020 will the final designs be ready, and it may be a couple more years after that before bills featuring Tubman and the others go into circulation. Lew argues, credibly, this is unavoidable, given the technical challenges involved in making the new designs secure against digital-age counterfeiters. No doubt the delay leaves his plan vulnerable to shifting political winds; and, of course, no plan is perfect, or immune to criticism. This one, though, is pretty close.

Education foundation to host fundraiser DAILY CHRONICLE

Museum hosts program on Underground Railroad DAILY CHRONICLE The beginnings of America included a giant struggle between those who supported and those who opposed slavery.

In the midst of this, from the 1820s through the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, 2,600 to 4,000 freedom seekers, also known as fugitive or runaway slaves, passed through northern Illinois. The networks of assistance that developed came to be called the Underground Railroad. Some of this happened in Sycamore and nearby communities and farms.

The Sycamore History Museum will bring Larry McClellan to Sycamore at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 28, to discuss this powerful part of history. He will explore what happened at national, state and regional levels to understand the context for these local experiences.

McClellan is retired from Governors State University south of Chicago, where he spent many years as a professor of sociology and community studies. He helped to start the university in 1970 and has worked with historical groups and regional organizations across northern Illinois.

The program will be held at the DeKalb County Community Foundation’s Freight Room, 475 DeKalb Ave. There is a $5 fee per person.

Members of the DeKalb Education Foundation Board of Directors made surprise visits to 14 classrooms in February to award checks in excess of $15,000 to teachers who had sought grant funding.

The teachers submitted grant applications to support educational opportunities for students in their classrooms. The awards given included money to support educational field trips, the purchase

of supplementary textbooks for classrooms and libraries, life-sized human skeletons, materials to be used in the Early Learning Development Center and the purchase of innovative technology including SPARKlink Air Interfaces, GoPro wearable cameras, coding robots to enhance STEM curriculum and software subscriptions.

Funding for these awards is made available primarily through the generosity of individuals and businesses within the DeKalb community. Boot

Scootin’ and BBQ’n, the foundation’s major fundraising event will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Kishwaukee Country Club.

The third annual event is a traditional pig roast with live music provided by Back Country Roads.

YMCA to celebrate 25th Healthy Kids Day DAILY CHRONICLE On Saturday, the Kishwaukee Family YMCA will host a free community event to inspire more children to keep their minds and bodies active. This year marks the 25th annual YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, the Y’s national initiative to improve health and well-being for kids and families.

Women Walk the World set April 29 DAILY CHRONICLE The sixth annual Women Walk the World, sponsored by the DeKalb County Homemakers Education Association, will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at the Farm Bureau’s Center for Agriculture, 1350 W. Prairie Drive, Sycamore.

Complimentary pedometers will be provided by Walgreens. Residents are invited to walk as long as they want and join the group for some homemade soup and bread. The group also will get an update on the Tanzanian Development Support projects.

The Ceramic Water Filter Pot Production factory, a DeKalb County Homemaker Education Association project, is up and running with the help of a loan from Tanzania Development Support. Donations from the walk will be used to repay that loan.

The pots are being made where they are needed and provide clean drinking water for families and income for the women operating the factory.

The area of Nyegina is where Tanzanian Development Support has been working to provide better schools, a dormitory for girls and a library.

Maddie finds Saffold for long touchdown in Team Black’s victory

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Anthony Maddie and Ezra Saffold both claimed they knew it would be a touchdown before the play started.

Starting at quarterback for Team Black, Maddie connected with the junior receiver on a slant and Saffold took it the rest of the way for a long touchdown in a 27-7 victory over Team Cardinal in the Huskie Bowl on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Huskie Stadium.

“I saw what they were in and where he was going to be and he did a good job of coming through the hole,” Maddie said of Saffold’s 58-yard touchdown on Team Black’s fourth drive of the afternoon. “I didn’t even see him down the sideline. That was an amazing run by him.”

It was welcome experience for Mad-

die, who got to prepare for game-like conditions for the first time in a while after having season-ending back surgery last year. The senior backup quarterback looked sharp Saturday, finishing 15 for 19 with 186 yards and added a 2-yard touchdown run on the eighth drive for Team Black.

“I was excited all week for this,” Maddie said. “It felt like preparing for game week, which I haven’t been a part of in a long time. It felt good getting back out there and competing and have a game-like atmosphere.”

It was a who’s who of former Huskie players on hand at the game – with former Heisman Trophy finalist Jordan Lynch, San Francisco 49ers safety Jimmie Ward and former standout quarterback Chandler Harnish among those attending. The game was also a chance for younger players to get some reps, with several key starters either not playing – quarterback Drew Hare,

running back Joel Bouagnon and wide receiver Kenny Golladay – or only playing a limited amount of drives.

“Health, that’s No. 1,” NIU coach Rod Carey said about what he feels makes a successful spring season. “That and fundamentals and you always want to experiment a little bit and learn your team on the effort and energy side. This team came and worked. We went longer in practice than we’ve gone in my time here – every day. There was no griping. They came out and worked.”

Sophomore running back Tommy Mister had a strong showing early for Team Cardinal – scoring on 4-yard run to take the lead and had 35 rushing yards on eight carries – but he left with an injury and had his left shoulder wrapped on the sideline.

quarterback Daniel Santacaterina connected with junior tight end Ryan Stendler for a 9-yard touchdown in the team’s ninth and final drive of the game.

“The entire day, I felt we were moving the defensive line really well, the running backs were making plays, the receivers were making plays,” Team Black offensive lineman Levon Myers said. “I don’t want to say we executed better, but I felt we were the better team today.”

Other highlights from the Huskie Bowl: • Team Black had two interceptions – with Cassius Grady and Taylor Mashack picking off Ryan Graham and Charlie Rotherham, respectively.

Mashack had a 22-yard return that set up a short field and eventually led to Santacaterina’s touchdown pass.

• Redshirt freshman linebacker Kyle Pugh had a pair of nice plays for Team Cardinal.

He got into the backfield and tackled Team Black running back Marcus Jones for a 5-yard loss on fourth-and-5 and later tackled running back Maalik Todd for a 3-yard loss near the goal line.

• On third-and-14, Graham found tight end Daniel Crawford on a short pass. Crawford stiff armed the defense and got the first down on a 21-yard gain.

• Team Cardinal ran a reverse to sophomore receiver DJ Brown and it resulted in a 7-yard gain.

• Milton had a scrimmage-high 40 rushing yards on nine carries. He also had a 37yard reception.

• Graham finished 8 for 13 with 68 yards, freshman Marcus Childers was 1 for 2 with 16 yards, sophomore Tommy Fiedler was 1 for 1 for minus-4 yards and Rotherham was 0 for 1 for Team Cardinal.

• Santacaterina was 4 for 6 with 9 yards and the touchdown.

The Huskies are done with the spring season and Carey said he was happy with how his team improved – highlighting receiver Christian Blake, safety Mycial Allen and several others on the defensive side.

“There’s going to be some really good battles come fall camp,” Carey said. “As far as who wants to be the guy getting the lion’s share of the reps.”

The weather was perfect on the afternoon – with temperatures in the upper 60s – and the Huskies had pushed back the start of the spring season to allow their quarterbacks to recover from injuries.

While the weather was likely better because of the late start, Carey said there are pros and cons about pushing spring football back a few weeks.

“This can work both ways – if you start earlier, if somebody gets dinged up, they have longer to get healthy,” Carey said.

“If you start later, you get better weather and you get more training. There’s positives and negatives for both sides. We’ve done it both ways. We’ll look back at it in August when I sit down and do the spring of 2017 schedule.”

DeKALB – Northern Illinois offensive lineman Levon Myers couldn’t help but laugh when he walked to the Huskie Bowl coin toss for Team Black.

Walking from the Team Cardinal sideline was senior defensive end Ladell Fleming, wearing a bright red wig and a vampire-style cape.

“I’m not really surprised because Ladell is kind of a goofy guy like that,” Myers said. “It made me laugh. I got a big laugh out of it.”

No, Fleming didn’t lose a bet.

He said he wanted to do something in his final Huskie Bowl to lighten the mood and had to use what he had. The cape came from when his former girlfriend was a vampire for Halloween, and he bought the curly red wig at a thrift store.

“This is just something different for my senior year,” said Fleming, the 6-foot, 236-pound defensive end from Julian High School. “I don’t think anybody’s ever done this. I just came out and did something different.”

While several of the players laughed and said they weren’t surprised by it – it was something Fleming would do – NIU

The Barbs (9-4-2) wasted no time on tying up the game. Pizano took a pass that evaded two defenders from about 10 yards out and put it home in the ninth minute of the game. The game would stay knotted at one until sophomore Hayley Brown scored late in the 32nd minute from the box, coming away from a clump of bodies with a goal.

“I had a defender on my back and I just went for it,” Brown said. “I kicked it and hoped for the best, and I got a goal out of it.”

Hamilton also had some nice things to say about Brown’s play.

“She’s been having a really great season for us,” Hamilton said of

Brown. “I think it is so rewarding that a kid that we are very high on worked hard and got her first goal of the year at a great time for us. She kept putting herself in positive areas and jumped on the opportunity.”

As the game wore on, Yorkville threw waves and made runs at tying the game.

The Foxes possessed the ball on the Barbs’ side of the field for a good portion of time.

The Barbs were content to let them have shots from a distance, but clamped down whenever the Foxes got inside of 25 yards.

Warner hits two-out game winner for DeKalb softball

“Overall, a good game for both teams,” said DeKalb assistant coach Kelli Gerace, who was filling in for an absent coach Jeff Davis. “Our defense was solid and our hitting came around.

We hit a lot of (times) right at someone.”

The Barbs are back in action at 4:30 p.m. Monday when they host Jacobs.

Spartans split with Prairie Ridge: Sycamore committed nine errors in a 13-3 loss but bounced back with a 9-2 win in the late game.

In the opener, Izzy Odom gave up three earned runs in six innings in the loss. Nati Morey was 2 for 3, as was Anna Criswell – who added two RBIs. Mia Richards also was 2 for 3 with an RBI. In the late game, Madison Parks struck out seven to get the win. Morey drove in a run and was 4 for 5, while Parks had three hits at the plate, and Richards added two more. Joslin Peck was 3 for 4.

“It was nice to see us bounce back and put together a complete game for Game 2,” Sycamore coach Jill Carpenter said. “Game 1 was just ugly. We need to play a whole lot better behind Izzy.

She only gave up three earned runs and deserved a lot more out of us defensively. The kids did a nice job of letting Game 1 go and coming out strong for Game 2.”

Timberwolves lose two: Indian Creek lost, 8-1 and 12-0, at Plano.

For Kaneland, Austin Kintz was second in the 800 (2:00.48) and Matt Richtman won the 3,200 (9:41.69). Kintz, Will Kuipers, Sean Spaetzel and Drew Franklin won the 3,200 relay in 8:07.74.

Savannah Long set a pair of meet records in the 100 (14.94) and 300 (45.58) hurdles, plus was on both the 400 and 800 relay teams. Alyssa Feuerbach had the highest finish for the Spartans taking second in the discus with a toss of 114-7.

Latos improves to 4-0 as White Sox beat Rangers

CHICAGO – Mat Latos pitched six solid innings for his fourth consecutive win, and the White Sox beat the Texas Rangers, 4-1, Sunday.

Latos (4-0), who signed a $3 million, one-year deal with the Sox in February, was charged with one run and seven hits.

The 6-foot-6 right-hander has allowed two earned runs in 241/3 innings while matching his win total from all of last year.

– Wire reports son was happy with the way his team competed.

“We played two real big schools in DeKalb and Belvidere last week,” Anderson said. “We dropped those first two games but we competed. Our goal today was to win both of our games and we did just that.”

The Royals were blanked by Hampshire, 1-0, in the seventh-place game.

The Barbs host Sterling at 6 p.m.

Tuesday. Indian Creek will travel to Elgin to face Westminster Christian at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Hinckley Big Rock will play hosts to IMSA at 4:45 p.m. today.

Get your antioxidants from food Dear Dr. K: It seems like several years ago all my friends were taking antioxidant pills. Now I don’t hear about antioxidants as much. Are they worth taking?

Dear Reader: Here’s what we know, and here’s what is still controversial. The cells of our body are full of chemicals interacting with other chemicals. In the process of getting the energy they need to survive and carry out their functions, cells naturally produce chemicals called “free radicals.” Just as political free radicals can sometimes damage society, chemical free radicals can damage body tissues.

Our environment also exposes us to substances that increase our production of free radicals. Examples are tobacco smoke, ultraviolet rays and air pollution.

To fight the effect of free radicals, our body makes natural antioxidant chemicals.

We also get antioxidants in foods. In particular, several vitamins – primarily vitamins A, C and E – have antioxidant powers.

If the levels of antioxidants match the levels of free radicals, we’re in balance.

However, if free radicals exceed the antioxidants in our body, we’re out of balance. This is called “oxidative stress.” Frequent bouts of oxidative stress may increase the pace of aging.

There is very strong evidence that eating a lot of foods rich in antioxidants can help lower your risk of many diseases. Good food sources of antioxidants include fruits and vegetables, particularly tomatoes, kale, blueberries, onions and apples. Other good sources include dark chocolate, whole grains, coffee, green tea and vegetable oils.

That’s not controversial.

Here is where the controversy begins. As scientists came to better understand the balance between free radicals and antioxidants, a beautiful theory emerged. Perhaps, scientists thought, taking antioxidant vitamin supplements would slow diseases of aging.

Some scientists find their theories so attractive they don’t bother to test them.

When that happens, they cease being scientists. Much more often, scientists put their theories to the test. Because the antioxidant vitamin pill theory was so compelling, a lot of time and effort was spent in testing it.

Unfortunately, results from well-designed trials of antioxidant supplements have failed to back up many of the claims of benefits.

One study pooled results from 68 trials with more than 230,000 participants. It found taking antioxidant supplements is unlikely to help you live longer. Sixty-eight rigorous studies, involving hundreds of thousands of people whose health was followed for many years, failed to show a benefit from antioxidant vitamin supplements.

Sometimes something terrible happens to scientists: a beautiful theory is murdered by a brutal gang of facts. Those 68 studies were a brutal gang indeed.

It was good those studies were done, even if the results disappointed some scientists.

People were spending a lot more money buying these supplements than was spent conducting the research to see if they were worth taking.

To answer your question, I don’t recommend that people routinely take antioxidant vitamin supplements. Your money is better spent elsewhere.

DEAR ABBY Thirty-five years ago, my wife Jeanne was raped in her Phillips mother’s home when she was a teenager. Eight years ago, my daughter also was raped at the age of 11 in the same home. My motherin-law blames them both for having been raped. She told them if it did happen, they probably deserved it.

I don’t understand this. How can someone take the side of the perpetrator and not their own flesh and blood? How can someone who is supposed to be nurturing, loving and caring say such terrible things to her children?

I want to call her up and give her a piece of my mind, especially since both of them are passive when it comes to this woman. Can they file a lawsuit against her for mental anguish? Help. I want to help them heal from this tragedy, and I don’t know what to do. – Distraught Dad In Texas Dear Distraught: It is not unusual for families to circle the wagons when this kind of sexual assault occurs or to blame the victim. That is why the damage persists from generation to generation. It’s clear your wife’s mother is either in denial or without shame.

If the perpetrator isn’t in prison or a program for sex offenders, the person you should talk to is a detective in the police force in the city where these sexual assaults happened. If your wife and daughter haven’t received counseling for the assaults (and I’m betting they haven’t), they should find some now.

The victims didn’t “deserve” being assaulted.

Counseling may help them get in touch with their anger, aim it where it belongs, and finally release it along with their passivity – which may really be fear of expressing their emotions.

Dear Abby: My wife’s first husband died of cancer.

When we got engaged years later, she decided to keep his last name (partly in regard to her daughters) and add mine to it. She continues to display some photos of him around the house and maintains her plan to be buried with him at their common gravesite.

Whoever thinks I must be jealous or resentful about this would be wrong. I haven’t experienced a long marriage, raising children or nursing a terminally ill spouse for years. Instead of demanding my wife “prove her love” by ignoring her history, I prove my love for her – in part – by deferring to her choices.

Soon after our wedding, we learned I, too, had cancer. My case was treatable, and I am now cured, thanks to God in heaven and my wife’s tender care.

We once knew someone who couldn’t bear to think of his wife’s ever marrying after his death. He pleaded, badgered and practically forced her to vow she wouldn’t. So this is my message for men who are jealous about a deceased or hypothetical “rival”: That is your own choice, and it disgraces you. Grow out of it. A bridge expert would not make mistakes in this week’s deals, because he always keeps track of high-card points -- during the auction and as the play progresses.

This deal is relatively straightforward. Look at the North-South hands and the bidding. How should South plan the play in three no-trump after West leads a heart?

South should overcall one notrump, not make a takeout double.

Yes, he would prefer a second heart stopper, but he has to do the best he can and hope partner tables a few useful goodies. Here, North has an easy raise to game. Remember to be aggressive in these situations because partner will be able to place the cards accurately from the bidding.

West leads the heart three, low from a tripleton in a suit partner bid that he did not support. This is the one time low from length does not promise an honor in the suit.

Declarer has six top tricks: three spades, one heart, one diamond and one club. A successful finesse in either minor will bring in the extra three winners that he needs. But which finesse should he take?

There are only 13 high-card points missing, so East must have both of the minor-suit kings. Therefore, when South wins with the heart ace, he crosses to the club ace, and takes the diamond finesse three times.
