Fearing the cost of change People don’t like change.

They especially don’t like changes that involve them paying more in taxes, or paying taxes in a different way that might involve them paying more or have some other unknown consequences.

But change eventually becomes necessary in everything, and it’s good that we’re talking now about how to change the way we pay for maintenance to our roads, bridges and other transportation infrastructure.

If you haven’t noticed, some of those things are falling apart, and we’re just not taking in as much money as we once did to repair and replace them.

My wife and I took a trip to Chicago last weekend, and some of the viaducts we drove under on the Eisenhower Expressway looked dangerously worn out.

Here in DeKalb, there are multiple streets around town that are clearly in need of repair, and as of yet, the city has not identified a funding source to pay for them – all the road repair funds have come from tax increment financing, leaving streets outside those special taxing districts without.

Some people have argued that with this being low tide for world oil prices, the time is right for a state or federal gasoline tax increase, with the money to be used for transportation infrastructure.

To be honest, when it costs less than $40 to fill the gas tank of the family minivan, it’s kind of hard to disagree – although enough people seem bound and determined to do so.

What’s more important however, is to prepare ourselves for a time when vehicles are ultra fuel efficient – requiring little to no gasoline to run.

EDITOR’S NOTE Eric Olson Just because you drive a Tesla, or a Toyota Prius or a Chevy Volt, shouldn’t exempt you from paying for the roads.

State Senate President John Cullerton recently floated the idea of taxing vehicle owners 1.5 cents for every mile they drive, rather than the gas they consume. Something similar, a voluntary pilot program, was started July 1 in Oregon.

Cullerton said this week he was abandoning the idea after he received “a lot of constructive feedback.”

Plans such as taxing vehicles per mile seem to be the right course for the future – because the combustion engine probably is not the future.

Not if Elon Musk can succeed at building a better battery, anyway.

In reality, maybe we should be looking at building a better transportation network, too, the same way the previous generations built the one we rely on now.

If we want a future where cars drive themselves, shouldn’t we be preparing to create a road network to enable that? That would take a significant capital investment, and people whose vehicles run on gasoline shouldn’t be the only ones to pay for it.

TODAY’S TALKER PRINCE, HUGELY INVENTIVE, INFLUENTIAL MUSICIAN, DEAD AT 57

CHANHASSEN, Minn. – Prince, one of the most inventive and influential musicians of modern times with hits including “Little Red Corvette,” ‘’Let’s Go Crazy” and “When Doves Cry,” was found dead at his home Thursday in suburban Minneapolis, according to his publicist. He was 57.

His publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, told The Associated Press that the superstar “died at his

home this morning at Paisley Park.” The local sheriff said deputies found Prince unresponsive in an elevator Thursday morning after being summoned to his home, but that first-responders couldn’t revive him.

No details about what may have caused his death have been released. Prince postponed a concert April 7 in Atlanta, after falling ill with the flu, and he apologized to fans during a makeup concert last week.

NIU’s Diversity Dialogue focuses on religious issues

DeKALB – An Islamic woman and another who uses “none” to describe her religious affiliation led the discussion Thursday at Northern Illinois University’s final Diversity Dialogue of the school year, closing out the inaugural semester the university engaged people on issues related to diversity and inclusion.

“There is room to be accepting of different viewpoints – even viewpoints that seem to be contradictory – but still move forward with making, first the campus, then hopefully, the whole world, a safer space” for people of different faiths, said writer and activist Aaminah Khan, one of the night’s guest speakers. She is a Muslim and a native of Australia who was educated in Catholic schools.

Khan, 26, teaches English at McNeese State University, located in Lake Charles, Louisiana, to people who don’t speak the language.

“As a Muslim in America, after 9/11 ... some of the hate mail I get are quite imaginatively violent,” she said.

She was joined by second guest speaker Katie Gordon of Grand Valley State University. Gordon told attendees about the negative responses she got when she previously announced to some co-workers that she was an atheist. Now, she said, her religious classification is “none.”

“This model of bringing people together across difference, toward some sort of common good, is a really important starting place for conversation where you can talk how you identify or what you believe,” said Gordon, 25, who is the interfaith coordinator at the Allendale, Michigan, school.

Participants at the dialogue sat around tables and offered opinions on faith-related case studies. The studies were provided. Khan and Gordon visited the tables and joined the discussions.

“This dialogue, we thought our speakers were much more practitioners, and so we wanted some handson time,” NIU diversity chief Vernese Edghill-Walden said. “We don’t want to just lecture about different types of interfaith. We actually wanted to see that in action.”

She also announced that the university’s diversity website launched Thursday, and an interfaith commission was started.

NIU has more than 20,000 students enrolled, including 15,000 undergraduates and more than 5,000 graduate and law school students. While the school tracks racial, gender and some nationality information, spokesman Joe King said NIU doesn’t keep track of students’ religious affiliations.

But there are a number of student organizations on campus affiliated with specific religions.

Thursday’s discussion about religion came after the one last month addressing First Amendment rights. The idea to host the community discussions was born out of a NIU diversity task force that also recommended the school have a chief diversity officer.

“I thinks it’s been important for us to get the Diversity Dialogues started.

There’s been a lot of energy at both of them,” NIU President Doug Baker said.

“They’ve started conversations not only in these rooms but out across campus and across the community.”

Residents petition for special prosecutor

McCullough case goes before judge today

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – More than 200 DeKalb County residents have signed a petition requesting DeKalb County Judge William Brady assign a special prosecutor to retry Jack McCullough for the 1957 murder of 7-year-old Maria Ridulph.

Bruce Brandwein, the attorney representing the victim’s brother, Charles Ridulph, filed an amended motion Thursday requesting another prosecutor be allowed to review the case. Attached to the motion were more than 200 signatures in support of the request, and a letter from Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy accusing DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack of being a “rogue” prosecutor exhibiting a “strong appearance of impropriety.”

“Absent a special prosecutor, the community faith in the integrity of the court is diminished,” Mundy wrote.

The mayor, who is friends with Charles Ridulph, said his affiliation with the case is only as a private citizen, and has no association with his official duties.

“We grew up together. We were lifelong friends. I’m very close to the [Ridulph] family,” Mundy said. “We’re in the same church together. We went to school together in Sycamore. I’ve known him my whole life.”

Without the help of an attorney, Ridulph on March 28 submitted a motion for a special prosecutor, but later realized he filed the request citing the wrong statute. Brandwein submitted an amended request at 11:19 a.m. Thursday, claiming phone records that might have corroborated an alibi for McCullough are not new evidence, and were available to him during his 2012 trial.

Mundy’s is the first of more than 200 signatures on a petition for a special prosecutor, which was filed with Brandwein’s motion Thursday in DeKalb County Court.

“Mr. Ridulph has attached as Exhibit A letters and petitions from citizens of DeKalb County indicating that not to appoint a special prosecutor would severely impair the public’s trust in the criminal justice system,” Brandwein wrote.

“Mr. Ridulph expects further signatures on similar petitions, which he will present in open court.”

Sycamore attorney and former DeKalb County State’s Attorney, Tim

Johnson, made the petition available in his office and used Facebook to garner more signatures. It was Johnson’s law partner and Schmack’s predecessor, Clay Campbell, who prosecuted McCullough in 2012.

“So cool to see the support from [Sycamore] for Chuck Ridulph’s motion. Still some life left in old Sycamore,” Johnson posted to the social media site Wednesday.

The judge vacated McCullough’s conviction Friday, and granted his request for a new triall. Schmack, however, has filed a request to dismiss all charges against McCullough.

Brady is expected to rule on both requests today.

Even those without a personal connection to the case or the Ridulph family, believe the objective opinion of a special prosecutor is needed.

“It was a very impactful moment for my parents, having young children at the time and so forth,” said DeKalb resident Jami Nguyen, one of the people who signed the petition. “It was something that was talked about quite frequently in our family.”

Sycamore resident Nate Kitterman also signed the petition. He said it seemed unlikely the investigation performed by the Seattle and Illinois State Police could have been so misguided, and if McCullough truly is innocent, the evidence should speak for itself.

“Basically, I think it’s only fair in today’s justice system that there is a special prosecutor to look at the ‘new-found’ revelation that only one person picked up on,” Kitterman said. “I find it kind of hard to believe that all the other people who investigated it in the past overlooked all these details.”

and community. His warm smile, positive nature and delightful sense of humor are precious gifts that have touched their lives deeply. He brought his robust energy to an active life filled with golf, bowling, fishing, hunting, snow skiing, and always supporting his kids and grandkids in their sporting activities. His love of the game made him a winner (sometimes) at poker, cribbage, bridge or any card game that came along. He was often the guilty one of hiding the last piece of the jigsaw puzzles he enjoyed with his family. He held a sense of wonder for our natural world and enjoyed camping and cross-country road trips with his family.

His faith was a guiding force in his life and he was a very active member of the Faith United Methodist Church of Genoa, where he had served on the Board, and as a Sunday School Teacher. He worked also on the original Building Committee of 1960 and the ensuing Building Committee in 2008 for his church. His strength as a believer inspired many people in his church community. Ross devoted his life to serving others.

Married at 18, drafted at 20, and while serving in the United States 254th Infantry Regiment of the 3d Infantry Division in France and Germany, he was wounded and received the Purple Heart.

Upon his return to U.S. soil he continued as a Partner of the Leader Oil Company in Sycamore, and believed always that “Life offers more in Sycamore.”

He was a member and past President of the Genoa and Sycamore Chambers of Commerce.

He was a proud and active member of the Tebala Temple and Masonic Lodge of Genoa. He was a former member of the Genoa Lion’s Club, the VFW, the Moose Lodge, the Elks Club and the Charter Grove Grange. He was a true believer in giving back to one’s community, wherever he lived. He was a member of the Sycamore Township Board, a Republican Precinct Committeeman and served many years as an Election Judge. In later years he served on the Board of Directors for Opportunity House and C.A.S.A, and was a frequent volunteer driver for MedVac. Ross departed with dignity and grace to join his parents, his three sisters and his first and only son, Barrie.

He is survived by his loving wife, Roberta and 3 adoring daughters, Julie (Dan) Schuelke of Oregon, WS, Marna (Ricardo) Rojas of Barrington, IL and Angela (Larry) Euhus of DeKalb, IL. JOSEPHINE SINGLETON Josephine Singleton, 85, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb. She was born August 9, 1930 in Fordtown, Tennessee the daughter of James and Bessie (Hamilton)Hamilton. Josephine married James Singleton on June 30, 1960 in Gate City, Virginia.

Jo retired from General Electric in DeKalb after 46 years. She enjoyed bowling, word search puzzles, and visiting with friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Glenna (Joel Williams)Singleton of Sycamore; granddog, Roxie; Allan and John Singleton; sisters, Pauline Hamilton Bowen and Loretta Humpherys Salts.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim in 2009; sisters, Gladys Hamilton Ward, Shirley Hamilton Watkins, Thelma Hamilton Olson, and Dolly Humpfries Cole.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m.

DeKALB – Today is the day for DeKalb shoppers to go green and a new pilot program could make it easier.

The Citizen’s Environmental Commission of DeKalb and the DeKalb County Health Department have launched a campaign to encourage residents to ditch plastic bags in favor of reusable canvas ones.

The Share-A-Bag pilot program to distribute 220 canvas bags kicks off today, which is Earth Day. The bags will be available at the DeKalb Public Library, Salvation Army Food Pantry, Barb Food Mart, the DeKalb County Health Department and Laundry Lounge.

All of the bins will be stocked with reusable grocery-sized bags donated by Hy-Vee and First National Bank. Residents are encourages to take a bag as needed and bring in extra bags they may have to sustain a constant supply, said Clare Kron, a member of the Citizen’s Environmental Commission of DeKalb.

“This is our first step,” Kron said.

She said the pilot program was inspired by Evanston’s plastic bag ban.

In 2015, the Chicago suburb prohibited stores larger than 10,000 square feet from distributing point-of-sale disposable plastic shopping bags. Under Evanston’s ordinance, paper and plastic bags used to package products like produce and meat are allowed. Furthermore, customers are allowed to bring in bags of their choice.

Kron said one of the challenges of using reusable bags is that many people are creatures of habit. She said she had to train herself to remember to bring bags with her when shopping at the grocery store. Many times, she said she had to return to car to get the bags before checking out. But its now a habit for her. She hopes to see many others take it up.

The campaign is designed to promote the use of reusable bags as a voluntary effort, Kron said. Another goal is to raise awareness about the problems with disposing of plastic bags, which the EPA said can take 1,000 years to decompose.

“Canvas bags last much longer,” said Michelle Gibson, solid waste specialist at the DeKalb County Health Department.

County unemployment rate hits 6.4 percent in March DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – DeKalb County’s unemployment rate hits 6.4 percent last month, up nearly a percentage point from March 2015, when it was 5.5 percent, according to preliminary figures released Thursday by the Illinois Department of Employment Security and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The jobless rate in the city of DeKalb was 6.2 percent in March, up from 5.3 percent in March 2015. The unemployment rate identifies those who are out of work and looking for work, and is not tied to collecting unemployment insurance benefits.

Statewide, the unemployment rate was 6.8 percent last month.

The state Department of Employment Security said the unemployment rate rose in every Illinois metro area in March. It was the second straight month of across-the-board increases.

“Unemployment rates increased in more than half of the metro areas even though they experienced job growth,” IDES Director Jeff Mays said. “The increase in the unemployment rate was largely due to more people entering the

The March statewide jobless rate rose to 6.5 percent.

The Danville area had the highest unemployment rate last month at 8.4 percent. That was up from 6.8 percent a year earlier. Unemployment was up a percentage point to 7.9 percent in March in Decatur.

The lowest jobless rate last month was 5.8 percent in Champaign-Urbana.

That was a point higher than March 2015.

Unemployment in the Chicago-Naperville-Arlington Heights area was 6.6 percent in March. That was up from 6 percent.

Assembly works on $600M college plan

eolson@shawmedia.com SPRINGFIELD – A temporary funding fix for financially struggling Illinois colleges and universities is in limbo because lawmakers delayed a vote on a rare bipartisan measure that would send the schools $600 million.

The proposal also includes nearly $170 million in monetary assistance program grants for low-income students.

The House and Senate were expected to vote on it Thursday, but instead adjourned for the night.

Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office released a statement supporting the plan.

“The governor applauds the members in both chambers and on both sides of the aisle who are coming together to deliver emergency assistance to our universities, community colleges and low-income students,” the statement said. “We hope the majority will respect the bipartisan agreement reached today and move the agreement to the governor’s desk without delay.”

Lawmakers could have another chance to vote on the measure today if House Speaker Michael Madigan agrees to call it for a vote. If not, they aren’t due back in Springfield for two weeks, state Rep. Bob Pritchard, R-Hinckley, said.

Pritchard said the stopgap funding

measure would enable colleges and universities to “keep the lights on” for three or four months, and also would give some reassurance to students due to begin attending Illinois schools in the fall.

“At the moment, I think there’s a strong chance” that a vote could happen [today], Pritchard said.

At Northern Illinois University, officials said they can continue to operate until next spring without state assistance – but the school has covered the cost of about $20 million in MAP grants for its students this year, and has not received any state funding. The university’s budget anticipated NIU would receive about $63 million this school year.

Observers don’t help dying Chicago bartender

CHICAGO – Surveillance video shows more than a dozen people doing nothing to help a Chicago bartender as he is attacked, left unconscious on the street and accidentally run over by a taxi.

Marques Gaines, 32, later died at a hospital. His family has filed a wrongful death and negligence lawsuit against several businesses and taxi companies in his Feb. 7 death.

The video shows Gaines leaving a convenience store and chatting with other people outside before getting into a confrontation with a man wearing a hooded jacket. That man shoves Gaines. The video then shows someone punch Gaines, who falls to the ground unconscious.

Several people are then seen approaching Gaines. The Chicago Tribune reported that Gaines’ family said his cellphone and debit card were stolen. Chicago police said they cannot confirm Gaines was robbed.

The video shows the people who approached Gaines walking away as he lies on the ground. Several other people ignore Gaines as they walk by. Then, a taxi turning onto the street where Gaines is lying runs over his body.

The mayor didn’t rule out abolishing IPRA last week or Thursday, but he also has not foretold the future of an agency that critics say has allowed abusive officers to escape discipline and has become a major reason why many in the community do not trust the police force.

It’s disappointing to critics who have watched Emanuel scramble to regain the trust of the city – and some on the police force – since November, when a judge ordered the release of a video Emanuel fought to keep sealed that showed a white officer shooting and killing black teenager Laquan McDonald 16 times.

2 state parks close because of lack of electric, trash

Ramsey Lake State Recreation Area and Horseshoe Lake State Park are closing indefinitely.

The department said Wednesday that Ramsey Lake in central Illinois will close because of termination of electrical service. Horseshoe Lake in southern Illinois near Granite City will close because of termination of trash and electrical service.

The department said there’s no estimate of when either site might reopen. The news release didn’t say if the closures were related to the lack of a state budget.

IDNR said camping was to start May 1 at Horseshoe Lake, but it won’t be open that day. The department will contact those with reservations to offer refunds or other accommodations.

Legislation encourages reporting sex assault

CHICAGO – A group of Illinois prosecutors and advocates said new legislation would encourage more victims of sexual assault to report the crime to authorities.

A Senate committee advanced the measure to the full Senate on Wednesday.

It would require police and 911 call centers to adopt policies for responding to sexual assaults that are more sensitive toward victims.

Law enforcement officers also would be required to complete a written report of every complaint, regardless of where it occurred or who is reporting it.

The measure was drafted in response to studies that suggest only 5 percent to 20 percent of rapes are reported to law enforcement. Attorney General Lisa Madigan said the legislation will help “ensure that justice is being served.”

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Donald Trump’s chief lieutenants pushed skeptical Republican leaders Thursday to embrace him as their likely presidential nominee, declaring he can deliver big electoral gains this fall despite his contentious ways.

Even as his team pressed Trump’s case, the billionaire raised fresh concern among some conservatives by speaking against North Carolina’s “bathroom law,” which directs transgender people to use the bathroom that matches the sex on their birth certificates. Trump also came out against the government’s plan to replace President Andrew Jackson with the civil-rights figure Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill.

The developments came as the GOP’s messy fight for the White House spilled into a seaside resort in south Florida. While candidates in both parties fanned out across the country before important primary contests in the Northeast, Hollywood’s Diplomat Resort & Spa was transformed into a palm-treed political battleground.

There were new signs of frustration among members of the Republican National Committee, who are eager for the divisive primary season to end.

“I want to see Mr. Trump begin to bring us together,” said Henry Barbour, a committeeman from Mississippi. “And I haven’t seen it.

It’s not good enough to do it for 30 minutes one day and then the other hours of the day try to

divide.”

On one side in the long-running battle, Ted Cruz’s team warned party elders in private briefings that only the Texas senator could expand the GOP and heal deepening intraparty divisions. On the other, Trump’s revamped inner circle quietly courted RNC members who openly questioned the front-runner’s tone and party loyalty.

“People have expressed concerns about that,” said Paul Manafort, tapped by Trump earlier in the month to lead the remainder of his primary election strategy. “We hear them.”

“We’re here letting people know that know we’re starting to pivot toward the inevitability of the nomination,” Manafort told The Associated Press. “We want to start opening doors and building relationships because we are committed to running a traditional united party.”

There was evidence of a rift on the Democratic side as well.

Prominent Southern Democrats urged Bernie Sanders to stop dismissing Hillary Clinton’s landslide primary wins across the South, where the front-runner’s popularity among non-whites has helped fuel her success.

Sanders said the results in the South “distort reality” because they came from the country’s “most conservative region.”

Don Fowler of South Carolina, a former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and other Clinton supporters told Sanders in a letter that “our national Democratic leaders” should “invest in our races and causes – to amplify our voices, not diminish them.”

Small changes to help Earth Today marks the 46th Earth Day, a movement that was started in hopes of motivating people to action to save the planet.

But even in 1970, its principles weren’t new. Though environmental issues raise political hackles in some circles, preservation and conservation run deep in America’s DNA. It doesn’t mean everyone needs to move into 180-squarefoot tiny houses run on solar power, although that idea appeals to some. It means leaving the Earth better than we found it, and passing on that simple mantra to the next generation.

It’s an effort that takes more than a single day to accomplish.

It’s a lifestyle worth adopting year-round. So this Earth Day, take a moment to decide which small changes you can make to help the Earth.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (www.epa.gov) offers a few tips: • Change five light bulbs. Replacing your five most frequently used light bulbs with Energy Star qualified products will save you about $70 a year on energy bills.

They generate 75 percent less heat and uses about 75 percent less energy than standard lighting.

• Carpool when possible to reduce energy consumption.

• Rely on reusable goods, such as food and beverage containers and shopping bags.

• Recycle, and buy recycled products.

• Donate your old clothing to charity.

• Limit food waste and start a compost pile for what is thrown out. Most people don’t realize how much food they throw away – more than 35 million tons in 2013 – and about 95 percent ends up in landfills or combustion facilities.

• To reduce outdoor water use, plant a water-smart landscape by using low water-using and native plans. Leave grass clippings on the lawn as fertilizer.

Rebecca Traister, in her 2010 book “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” took on the “frat boys” at MSNBC, and the misogyny and sexism heaped on Clinton by too many young, white males on social media and in the Obama campaign. I reviewed her book for The Washington Post, and her description of their behavior has stayed with me: “A pattern was emerging in the liberal, privileged, predominantly white climes in which I worked and lived: young men were starry-eyed about Obama and puffed with outsized antipathy toward Clinton. ... I was made uncomfortable by the persistent note of aggression that marked their reactions to Clinton, and puzzled by the increasingly cult-like devotion to Obama, a man whose policy positions were not so different, after all, from those of his opponent. Hating Hillary had for decades been the provenance of Republican blowhards, but now men on the left were spewing vitriol about her voice, her

looks, her presumption – and without realizing it were radicalizing me in my support for Clinton more than the candidate herself ever could have.”

Sound familiar? This year, I mean.

Only now, as I daily behold the latest round of anti-Clinton misogyny from – ta da! – mostly young white male lefties, do I realize how much that 2008 campaign season changed me. As well as many of my female friends, I no longer gasp or wonder how these boys could be so mean.

This time around, I mentally flick them away like gnats. Age has few glory-be benefits, but this immunity to such adolescent hate is definitely one of them. What grown man – what real man – thinks like this? We haven’t the time, my friends.

I am reminded of an exchange I had 14 years ago with my editor, Stuart Warner, soon after I first became a newspaper columnist. I was dumbstruck by the sudden, relentless flood of hate mail from a certain percentage of white, male readers.

“What am I doing to incite this?”

I asked.

“Nothing you can change,” he said.

His words emboldened me, and for that I will always be grateful. If they hate you only because you’re a

woman, you’ve already won.

Hillary Clinton is the most qualified person running in this election, and she will be the first female president of the United States. I am certain of this, as I am certain that we will never stop hearing from that small percentage on the left who want to cast her as something less than human. It is impossible for a woman to reach her level of success and be anyone’s saint. So be it.

Last weekend, I was standing in our backyard when our 2-year-old granddaughter, Jackie, walked out the door and across the porch to join me. I lifted my camera and captured a memory that will stay with me for all of my cognizant days.

In the photo, she is a little girl with eyes forward, arms swinging, stride unstoppable.

In my heart, she is a little girl who, like so many girls, deserves to see a version of herself in the White House.

Prevent the spread of Zika before it’s too late Congress and President Barack Obama are engaged in a needless spat over the president’s Feb. 8 request for about $1.9 billion to fight the growing danger of the Zika virus.

For two months, the Republican-controlled House and Senate have not acted.

Further delay will degrade preparedness for a virus that carries a greater punch than was first believed. The dispute is one that White House and legislative staff could easily resolve in an hour – and ought to get done tomorrow.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced April 13 that a careful study showed Zika is a cause of microcephaly and other severe fetal brain defects. Tom Frieden, the CDC director, said the study was a “turning point.”

This means that women who are

pregnant and get infected by the mosquito-borne virus are at risk of giving birth to children with the brain disorder, although not every pregnant woman infected will do so. The virus, carried by Aedes mosquitoes, has been steadily expanding throughout the Americas in recent months.

So far, the 358 cases in the United States have been among travelers, but local outbreaks could reach the shores of the southern United States this summer.

In many cases, the virus causes mild symptoms, but the link with brain damage is now of genuine concern, especially in poor, urban areas.

When infectious disease strikes, it often races ahead of the response by people.

It has been an unfulfilled dream of biomedical researchers to find a rapid response mechanism, but vaccines

and therapeutics take time to discover and manufacture.

The scientific and medical hurdles aside, another reason for delay is that governments wait too long.

This was a central lesson of the Ebola disaster in West Africa. It is not known how serious of a Zika crisis could erupt in the United States, but the time to prepare is now. A multipronged effort is urgent: research on vaccines and rapid diagnostics; bolstering the nation’s fragmented mosquito control programs; and public education, among other things.

Presented with White House requests for the open-ended emergency supplemental, Republicans balked, suggesting that Obama could use unspent Ebola funds instead. President Obama agreed April 6 to redirect $589 million in Ebola money for Zika response, but he insists his original re-

quest is still valid.

House Republicans are saying that the White House hasn’t provided enough detail. We applaud the congressional urge to apply oversight, but not the delay.

Congress and the president have no shortage of staff to investigate, hammer out legislation, create programs and build an effective response. They must get to work immediately. Zika doesn’t know a Democrat from a Republican.

What will members of Congress tell those mothers and children in the United States who become victims of Zika this year and next year because resources were not committed to preparing for the virus? That there were “unanswered questions” in the paperwork? How lame, and irresponsible.

Hillary Clinton’s ascendancy in the race for president has provided an opportunity for the rest of us women to step back and assess our standing in America.

This reflection is worth our time, particularly for those of us who are old enough to remember what it felt like to watch Clinton come so close to the nomination in 2008. This is a memory with many folds, some of them deep and dark and hard to shake out.

I’m not referring to her ’08 defeat.

We got over that. Most of us got caught up in the inevitable – in retrospect, the impossible – optimism swirling around the young man who would become our first black president.

I will never forget the sight of Barack and Michelle Obama and their beautiful daughters walking out on that Chicago stage on election night. I was standing in front of a television in a hotel room in Columbus, Ohio, holding my sleeping grandchild, Clayton, in my arms.

I was so full of emotion I could not speak.

My infant grandson’s first president would be an African-American.

How could he not grow up to know a different world?

Northern Rehab donates to Eagle Scout project daily chronicle Boy Scout Ryan Loitz of Troop 16 in Sycamore has been working on his Eagle Project, “Recycle Your Cycle: For a Wheelie Good Cause.” The project entails collecting gently used adult and youth bikes from the community, repairing and cleaning them as needed, then donating them to families in need in the community.

Northern Rehab Physical Therapy Specialists recently presented Loitz with a donation to help support the project.

Loitz has been fundraising since March and will use the donations to pay for needed parts and labor to fix some of the bikes.

He hopes to have enough remaining funds to purchase bike helmets and locks to donate along with the bikes.

Loitz teamed up with Aaron Nevdal, a physical therapist at Northern Rehab who also is heavily involved with Axletree, a non-profit organization that promotes bike advocacy and community awareness in DeKalb.

The next phase of the project is a community bike drive scheduled for Sunday at Northern Rehab Physical Therapy Specialists, 3266 Resource Parkway in DeKalb. Anyone wishing to donate bikes can drop them off between 2 and 5 p.m.

Bishop Lee to celebrate Pianist to perform at SUMC confirmation at St. Paul’s DAILY CHRONICLE

DAILY CHRONICLE St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will host a regional confirmation service Saturday, confirming and receiving individuals from four area churches. This will be one of three regional confirmations conducted this spring in the Chicago Diocese.

Pianist Jim Hendricks grabbed the attention of family members and musicians as a child with the uncanny ability to play anything he heard on records and memorize any printed music that came across the piano.

While still in grammar school, Hendricks was able to transcribe by ear Jim complex harmonies and Hendricks melodies – without the use of a piano. He continued intensive musical studies and was considered a professional as a teenager.

On April 30, he will present a concert at 5 p.m. at Sycamore United Methodist, the church where he grew up, and where his parents still attend.

After high school, Hendricks performed with jazz legends such as Dave Brubeck, Della Reese, Maynard

Ferguson, Jack Jones and many others.

He also competed in numerous international piano competitions, and was a featured orchestral soloist, performing Rachmaninoff. At age 25, Hendricks accepted a professorship in the piano department of Chicago State University.

While on tour with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Hendricks realized that he wanted to use his talents for God’s glory, and he followed a calling into Christian ministry. Since then, he has performed more than 1,200 Christian piano concerts in churches all across the country, including the Crystal Cathedral. He has made 13 recordings, and performed on ABC, CBS,TBN and PAX. SUMC is at 160 Johnson Ave. in Sycamore. Two-out rally sets tone for Barbs

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Erin Karasewski hit a hard grounder right to second base in the seventh inning of the DeKalb softball team’s game against Sycamore with her Barbs up five.

A couple inches one way or the other and she would have gotten the single she needed to complete the cycle. Instead, she had to settle with a 3 for 4 day with three RBIs, two runs scored, her first career home run and a 9-4 win over the rival Spartans at Sycamore Park District.

“We really bounced back from yesterday; I’m really proud of us,” Karasewski said. “We just played a lot more loose.

We just had fun, and I think we kind of lost that the last couple games. We just played for each other, went all out and I’m really happy about that.”

The Barbs (9-4, 3-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference) had dropped two straight and were playing for the third time in as many days. Karasewski, a junior left fielder, said the Barbs needed to play looser and accomplished that in the rivalry game.

“There’s definitely more riding on the game, but for me at least I feel looser and everything,” Karasewski said. “I just want to go out there and do so well, especially against them.”

In a scoreless game in the second, DeKalb exploded for four runs against the Spartans (3-9, 0-5), all with two outs.

Torrie Newport opened the inning with a single, but Madison Parks retired the next two hitters. J.C. Longeville beat out an infield single to short, then Gabrielle Farrell ripped a double to left to score a run.

DeKalb coach Jeff Davis used a different lineup than usual – the Barbs are in the midst of five games in five days with battles against Sterling and Batavia left to end the week – and said the players came through in ending the short losing streak.

“Gabby Farrell started in left today and had three RBIs with two outs,” Davis said. “Those are big, big hits and seemed to lift our spirits a whole lot. All of a sudden hitting gets contagious and we look good again.”

I definitely think we hit the ball better off of Newport compared to last time. ... We got people on base. We need to limit our strikeouts a little bit, but that’s what Morgan does.”

Newport finished with 12 strikeouts in seven innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs. Karasewski’s homer came in the sixth inning to right field with two strikes and two outs in the frame. DeKalb banged out 12 hits in

the game, including two each for Torrie Newport, Levine and Farrell.

Nati Morey hit a home run in the fifth inning off of Newport to right-center field to make the game 7-4 at the time, but the Spartans still went on to lose their seventh straight game.

“We’ve faced some really good competition the last few weeks,” Carpenter said. “We’ve faced at least three D-I pitchers. When you start talking about stuff like that, you’ve got to play a perfect game – pitching, defense, offense – to win a game. We’re just not there yet.

We’re just talking about grinding it out and getting better every day as a team.”

Freshman hurler Anderson has been lights out for Huskies

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois baseball coach Mike Kunigonis didn’t want to put the burden of being the Friday starter on freshman William Anderson.

By the fourth series of the season, Anderson was taking the mound on Fridays.

“Truthfully, I didn’t want to have to put him in that situation, just for the simple fact – I don’t think it’s fair to put a freshman in that role,” Kunigonis said of being the Friday starter, which is usually the first game of the series.

“It’s a lot to ask of an 18-year-old kid.

Four weeks in, it was clear he could handle it and we made the move.”

Since the switch, Anderson has been lights out for the Huskies (12-24 overall, 7-5 in MAC West) and he likely will start when they host Buffalo at 3 p.m. today in the series opener at Ralph McKenzie Field.

Coming into the game against the Bulls (11-21 overall, 4-8 in MAC East), Anderson is 4-2 with a 3.05 ERA in 56 innings. However, during conference play, the Huskies have gotten even better performances out of the 6-foot-8,

200-pound Anderson – who laughs that an NIU professor asked if he was a basketball player earlier this week.

In four conference starts, he is 3-1 with a 1.71 ERA in 261/3 innings, limiting opposing hitters to just a .213 batting average.

“With conference starting, it put the nonconference behind us and almost restarted our season, in a way,” Anderson said.

Northern Illinois senior catcher Johnny Zubek said he was impressed with the freshman’s work ethic and confidence coming into the season.

“A lot of freshmen that come in, they don’t have that confidence that the older guys took time to develop,” Zubek said. “Will’s come in right away with a good attitude and confidence.”

Like the Huskies pitching staff as a whole, Anderson’s outings during the nonconference schedule were weaker than when he started MAC play. As a team, they have a 6.62 ERA on the season, compared to 3.11 during conference play.

In his first start of his collegiate career, he allowed three runs on six hits in six innings against Boston College.

“It wasn’t long until I realized they’re a little better than the high

schoolers I was used to facing,” Anderson said. “They’re leaving pitches alone that high school hitters would go after, and they’re hitting pitches high schoolers wouldn’t touch.”

While his worst outing of the year was a showing against Evansville in which he allowed six runs – four earned – on nine hits in 42/3 innings, he immediately turned it on during conference play. In the MAC opener against Ohio, he went eight scoreless innings in a 2-0 win over the Bobcats, which came after he went nine scoreless innings for a no-decision in a 1-0 win over Southern Illinois in 11 innings.

“He learned early on about focusing in the middle innings because that’s where he was struggling,” Kunigonis said. “He was lights out until the fourth or fifth.”

He has yet to have an outing in conference in which he gives up more than two runs. Kunigonis said Anderson and pitching coach Andrew Maki have worked on increasing the velocity of his curveball – from 64 to 66 mph to hovering around 70-71 – to go along with his four-seam fastball, two-seam fastball and change-up.

“He gets better every week,” Kunigonis said.

Arrieta throws 2nd career no-hitter

The Associated Press CINCINNATI – Jake Arrieta of the Chicago Cubs pitched his second no-hitter in a span of 11 regular-season starts, shutting down the Cincinnati Reds in a 16-0 rout Thursday night.

The reigning NL Cy Young winner threw the first no-hitter of the Major League Baseball season.

Arrieta (4-0) struck out six, walked four and allowed only six balls hit out of the infield. He threw 119 pitches, retiring Eugenio Suarez on a routine flyball to right field to end it.

“Once I got to the eighth, that was the idea: Try to be good on the edges and not make any mistakes,” he said.

Arrieta threw his first career no-hitter last Aug. 30 at Dodger Stadium, beating Los Angeles, 2-0. That gem came as Arrieta put together one of the best pitching stretches in club history.

The Reds hadn’t been held hitless in a regular-season game since 1971, when Rick Wise did it for Philadelphia at Riverfront Stadium. In the 2010 NL playoffs, Roy Halladay of the Phillies pitched a no-hitter against Cincinnati.

Arrieta is among several pitchers in the last decade to pitch two no-hitters.

The 30-year-old righty is on the list with Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Tim Lincecum and Homer Bailey.

“Baseball history, there’s so many things I’ve been able to be a part of over these last 12, 15 months,” Arrieta said.

“We’re really trying to enjoy it.”

Arrieta is the first Cubs pitcher to win his first four starts in a season since Greg Maddux went 5-0 in 2006.

Ken Holtzman is the only other Cubs pitcher to throw more than one no-hitter in the modern era, doing it in 1969 and 1971.

Arrieta contributed a pair of singles and a walk as the Cubs pulled away.

The 16-run margin approached the most-lopsided victory in major league history. In 1884, Pud Galvin and Buffalo beat the Detroit Wolverines, 18-0, STATS said.

By Arrieta’s standards, it was a bit

of a struggle. He walked three batters – he’d allowed only two walks in his first three starts combined – and needed 85 pitches to get through six innings.

“It felt sloppy from the get go,” Arrieta said. “I was a little off on my command, but I was able to keep them off balance.”

After that, he dug in and made quick

work of the Reds’ lineup.

The thousands of Cubs fans in the crowd of 16,497 were on their feet cheering as Arrieta walked Scott Schebler to open the ninth, got pinch-hitter Tucker Barnhart on a popup, Zack Cozart on a fly to center, and Suarez on a fly to Jason Heyward.

Arrieta and catcher David Ross embraced halfway between home plate and the mound as the rest of the Cubs circled around him.

In September 2014, Arrieta lost a nohit bid against the Reds on Brandon Phillips’ one-out double in the eighth at Wrigley Field.

This time, the offense made the outcome a moot point while extending the Cubs’ best start since 1970.

Kris Bryant hit a two-run shot in the first off Brandon Finnegan (1-1), and his third career grand slam in the seventh off Drew Hayes made it 13-0.

Ben Zobrist and David Ross added solo shots, and Anthony Rizzo had a threerun homer.

As the Cubs made it a romp, there was only one question left: How far could Arrieta go?

He gave himself a chance by getting through the seventh and eighth innings on only 18 pitches, bearing down against an overmatched lineup.

The Cubs are off to their best start since they also went 12-4 in 1970, per STATS research.

Finnegan started at Wrigley Field on April 11 and didn’t allow a hit until Ross singled with two outs in the seventh. They were ready for the left-hander this time. Dexter Fowler doubled off the wall in center on Finnegan’s first pitch of the game, and Bryant’s homer made it, 2-0.

Zobrist homered in the second inning as the Cubs made it 4-0. They’re unbeaten this season when scoring at least four times, going 11-0.

Late rally falls short as White Sox fall to Weaver, Angels

CHICAGO – The White Sox had put together an unlikely ninth-inning rally.

Todd Frazier hit a two-out, solo home run, then Los Angeles Angels closer Huston Street walked two in a row.

Austin Jackson, who came in hitting .186, sent a deep fly ball to left field.

But Craig Gentry caught it at the base of the wall to preserve the Angels’ 3-2 victory.

“It was close,” Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. “The wind was blowing in a little bit. In the summer, it probably goes.”

The Sox, off to their best start in 10 years, came in leading the AL Central for the 12th day this season – one more than during the previous three years combined.

Despite the loss, the White Sox believe they’ll be playing meaningful baseball in the summer when the ball is carrying better.

“I appreciate and like the effort in the ninth inning, being able to bring the winning run to the plate or put it on base and grind out a ninth inning,” said Ventura, who has presided over three straight losing seasons. “I like that about our team.”

The Sox couldn’t solve Jered Weaver (2-0), who allowed only three hits, including Melky Cabrera’s solo homer in the seventh.

Mike Trout hit a two-run 419-foot homer to center off John Danks (0-3)

in the fifth to put the Angels ahead to stay. Carlos Perez’s squeeze bunt in the ninth provided what turned out to be the deciding run.

Street earned his fourth save in four chances, the 319th in his career, to tie Todd Jones for 18th place.

The weak link in a strong rotation for the White Sox had been Danks, who lowered his ERA from 7.94 to 6.23. The left-hander walked three over the first two innings, but got out of jams as the Angels continued to struggle.

The Northern Illinois Big 12 East Division showed it strength Thursday with DeKalb, Sycamore and Kaneland winning a trio of matches by a combined 23-0.

The Barbs beat Ottawa, 7-0, the Spartans beat Rochelle, 10-0, and Kaneland won, 6-0, at Sterling.

For the Knights (9-3-1), Becca Richtman had a pair of goals as they scored three times in the first 15 minutes and dominated possession throughout the game.

“In practice, we do a lot of keepaway, and that’s something that we’ve had a hard time bringing to the games,” Richtman said. “We definitely brought that today, so it was nice to be able to connect and get those passes through.”

For DeKalb (7-3-1), Hanna Hickey scored a pair of goals as five Barbs total scored in the game. The Barbs won their fifth straight game.

“It’s a better brand of soccer we’ve been playing,” coach Patrick Hamilton said. “They’re finally settling in and getting accustomed to each other.

All the kids have out in a ton of work to challenge each other and get better every day. You can tell it’s been working.”

Four different Spartans scored for Sycamore in the rain-soaked win against the Hubs.

G-K blanked by Stillman Valley: The Cardinals won an early goal, 1-0.

Huffman strikes out 17, but Cogs lose in 10

sports@daily-chronicle.com GENOA – Brady Huffman went nine innings and struck out 17 batters, but the Genoa-Kingston baseball team lost to Burlington Central, 4-3, in 10 innings on Thursday.

The Cogs got a filibuster-like effort from their ace Huffman, who is committed to play at Illinois State in the fall. He gave up three runs, 1 earned while allowing two hits, walking seven and hitting a batter.

Despite committing six errors in the 10-inning contest, Huffman wasn’t fazed. Rather, he was more critical of his own performance.

“It’s baseball,” Huffman said. “You pick yourself up and you face the next challenge. Today, I allowed too many walks and gave them too much. I wasn’t consistent enough throughout the game with my location.”

The Cogs were trailing 3-0 for most of the game, until Zach Butler got things started in the sixth by reaching on a throwing error made by Rockets third baseman Ryan Knowlton. Butler was driven in on the next at bat by Tommy Lucca’s double. After a pop out by Tommy Hansen, Lucca scored on an error

by Rockets second baseman Clay Milas.

That brought Huffman to the plate with the tying runner on second. Huffman hit an RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 3.

“I’ve been struggling at the plate this year,” Huffman said. “My goal was to just put the barrel on the ball and hope something good happens.”

After innings seven through nine, where each team threatened to score but never did manage, Cogs coach Roger Butler pulled his star pitcher in the 10th. Huffman left the game with 167 pitches according to GameChanger.com. Despite that high pitch count,

Huffman struck out two batters in the ninth inning.

“Brady is the kind of pitcher that gets better as the game goes on,” Butler said. “I’ve worked with Huffman since he was 6 years old. He told me that he could keep going. I trust him when he says that he has something left.”

After the home half of the ninth inning in which the Cogs had bases loaded and two outs and could not score, the Rockets took advantage of more lackluster Cogs defense. After first baseman David Lauber smacked a double into the gap in right center, he scored on the Cogs’ sixth and final error of the game.

“This has been a problem for us most of the year,” Butler said. “We’ve been working on it.”

In the bottom of the 10 th, Andrew Caldwell led off with a single, but was doubled off first when Huffman flew out to center field.

“Burlington is a very good team,” Butler said. “You can’t strand nine runners on base and beat a team that is that good.”

The Cogs will play a doubleheader at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wing Park in Elgin against St. Edward.

Spartans drop finale to Foxes

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Sycamore faced an uphill battle from the start of the game that would be too much to overcome, falling to Yorkville, 11-5, on Thursday.

Sycamore starting pitcher Jacob Cavanaugh struggled to find a rhythm early on – giving up six runs in the first inning after walking four batters. Cavanaugh was kept in the game and regained some of his composure, allowing three more runs over the next three innings. The starting pitcher finished his outing with five walks, three strikeouts and allowed 10 runs after four innings on the mound.

Sycamore (9-5, 4-2 NIB 12) responded with its bats and began to chip away at Yorkville (9-8, 2-4 NIB 12). Left fielder Tyler Maveus ignited his team with a leadoff triple and scored on a Michael Beaudoin single. The Spartans were lead at the plate by right fielder James Marcinkowski, who went 3 for 4 with two RBIs. “I liked the way we scratched and clawed to get back into it, but we were just unable to stop the bleeding,” Sycamore coach Jason Cavanaugh said.

“We just got off to a really bad start for whatever reason. Our starting pitcher just couldn’t throw enough strikes today after looking good in the bullpen before the game. When you don’t throw

strikes the natural thing that follows is making errors in the field.”

The Spartans were able to score four more runs over the course of the game and kept battling until the end. Cavanaugh was happy with the response his batters had after falling into a hole early.

“I thought we came back right away with Tyler Maveus hitting a triple to start us off,” Cavanaugh said. “We started to chip away but if we could have had one or two shutdown innings that would have changed the momentum around a little bit, but we were just unable to get that today.”

Sycamore won the first two games of the series, winning on a walkoff home run Monday and on the strength of a 10-run seventh inning Tuesday.

The Foxes grabbed the early lead and never looked back. Yorkville held at least a three-run lead for the entire game, and the early lead boosted the team in multiple areas. Yorkville was led by first baseman Cameron Van Boekel, who went 3 for 5 with two RBIs. “It really allows your pitchers to settle in to throw strikes and force the other team to put the ball in play,” Yorkville coach Scott Luken said.

“From that perspective, it is important and it helps relax the players and it’s just a lot more fun and go out and play when you have a big lead.”

24 Heart benefits from moderate drinking Dear Dr. K: I’ve heard drinking red wine, or any alcoholic beverage, in moderation is “heart-healthy.” Is it true, and is red wine any healthier than other alcoholic beverages?

Dear Reader: There are many studies of the two questions you ask. As for the first question, most studies have found moderate drinkers are less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. That’s when moderate drinkers are compared either with non-drinkers or to heavy drinkers.

“Moderate drinkers” refers to men who have an average of one to two alcoholic drinks a day, and women who have an average of one drink a day. The difference between men and women is because women metabolize alcohol somewhat differently from men.

A study published in 2015 from Harvard Medical School and other institutions analyzed results from almost 15,000 people. The study lasted almost 25 years. No one had heart failure at the beginning of the study.

By the end of the study, however, some did.

But moderate drinkers were 20 percent less likely than non-drinkers or heavier drinkers to develop heart failure. This positive effect of moderate drinking was somewhat stronger in men than in women. The study looked primarily at heart failure, and not at other types of heart problems.

Now to your second question, about whether red wine is a more heart-healthy type of alcoholic drink than other alcoholic beverages. Here, I’d say the evidence is less clear. A study reported in late 2015 got a lot of attention in the media for showing red wine is heart-healthy. In fact, that study did not really compare red wine with all other types of alcoholic beverages.

The study involved more than 200 adults who were at high risk for heart disease because they had Type 2 diabetes. Partici-

After about two years, the red wine drinkers had higher HDL cholesterol (“good” cholesterol), lower ratios of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol and fewer markers of “metabolic syndrome” (a cluster of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes), compared with the mineral water drinkers.

Each of these changes has been linked to lower rates of heart disease. However, the study was too short to determine if heart disease rates actually were lowered.

Interestingly, the white wine drinkers had somewhat different beneficial effects.

Compared with the mineral water drinkers, the white wine drinkers had lower blood sugar levels, lower levels of triglyceride fats and less insulin resistance. Each of these changes, too, has been linked to lower rates of heart disease. But again, the study was too short to determine if heart disease rates were actually lowered.

To make a long story short, moderate drinkers have heart benefits, compared with non-drinkers or heavier drinkers.

Heavier drinking puts the heart (and other organs) at risk. It’s not clear red wine is superior to other alcoholic beverages.

husband, “Ed,” and I are in our 40s. We both work, and Ed often puts in more than 60 hours a week. My in-laws, in their 60s, are both in good health, retired and well-off financially. They expect weekly gatherings unless they have other plans.

In warmer weather, my mother-in-law guilt-trips Ed into performing weekly chores such as painting, gardening, window washing, etc. These take more than six hours on Sundays, in addition to dinner.

My in-laws also insist on yearly family vacations. Because of this we have little time alone with our teens or each other. I don’t think all these gatherings should be mandatory. Please help. This is hurting our marriage.

How should South play in six spades after West leads the diamond three?

North’s four-club rebid was a splinter, showing spade support, at least game-going values and a singleton (or void) in clubs. When South control-bid his heart ace, North used Blackwood.

South made short work of going down. He won the first trick with his diamond 10 (the honor from the shorter side first), cashed his spade ace, and played a spade to dummy’s queen. When East discarded a diamond, South stopped in his tracks.

However, thinking was now too late; the contract could not be made. He tried to cash the diamond ace, but West ruffed and returned his last trump. Declarer had to lose a heart or a club at the end.

West’s lead was surely a singleton.

So, East had to be kept off lead. Also, in case there was a bad spade split, South should have played a club to dummy’s ace, then run the spade nine. West would have won and led a high club, but declarer could have ruffed with dummy’s spade queen, drawn trumps, and claimed four spades, one heart, five diamonds, one club and the club ruff.
