Hotel pools big part of parenthood POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS I expected certain things to change when my wife and I first became parents 11 years ago.

The amount of time that I would spend swimming in hotel pools, however, was not one of them.

If I had kept count of the number of hotel pools I have splashed around in until my fingers turned to prunes over the past decade, I’m pretty sure I’d be nearly in triple-digits.

The water amenities just don’t get old for kids.

Mine seem to get as jazzed up about a common hole in the ground in a 1970s-era Best Western in Superior, Wisconsin, as they do a big aquatic complex with water slides and lazy rivers and a bucket that dumps 1,000 gallons of water every five minutes.

There never has been a hotel pool that my children did not dare venture into, or demand that I accompany them into, or refuse to leave without being asked at least five times.

This weekend was a first, though, even for a hotel-pool veteran. This weekend, I swam in the pool at the the Country Inn & Suites just minutes from my home in Sycamore,

Although the younger two girls and I didn’t spend the night presiding over the madness, we swam in the pool – twice, probably for close to four hours.

They’d have stayed longer. I had to drag them out.

In case you’re wondering, they have a fine pool at the Country Inn. Very clean. Good water temperature. Good exposure to let the sunshine in.

So there’s another milestone in my pool-hopping parenthood: Swim in a hotel pool in the town where you live.

Bible on ‘challenged’ list at libraries The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – On the latest list of books most objected to at public schools and libraries, one title has been targeted nationwide, at times for the sex and violence it contains, but mostly for the legal issues it raises.

The Bible.

“You have people who feel that if a school library buys a copy of the Bible, it’s a violation of church and state,” says James LaRue, who directs the Office for Intellectual Freedom for the American Library Association, which released its annual 10 top snapshot of “challenged” books on Monday, part of the association’s “State of Libraries Report” for 2016.

“And sometimes there’s a retaliatory action, where a religious group has objected to a book and a parent might respond by objecting to the Bible.”

LaRue emphasized that the library association does not oppose having Bibles in public schools. Guidelines for the Office for Intellectual Freedom note that the Bible “does not violate the separation of church and state as long as the library does not endorse or promote the views included in the Bible.” The ALA also favors including a wide range of religious materials, from the Quran to the Bhagavad Gita to the Book of Mormon.

LaRue added that the association does hear of complaints about the Quran, but fewer than for the Bible.

Mindful living helps some residents find peace

DeKALB – The chaos that runs along Hillcrest Avenue doesn’t touch Cynthia Harness inside her small, quiet studio that smells faintly of eucalyptus and lavender.

Harness said that since she has found mindful living and opened the Wise Owl Wellness Center, things don’t rattle her quite so easily.

“It’s really being able to maintain the calm in the middle of the chaos,” she said.

Mindful living is an ancient concept, but has recently become a bit of a buzzword, experts in the field said. The idea of mindfulness revolves around becoming aware of your inner thoughts and emotions throughout the day. Accepting those feelings – for better or worse – and learning to be realistic with yourself about where you are has been shown to help people improve their mental and physical health and improve relationships, said Fran Tierney, a licensed counselor who practices in Sycamore and encourages her clients to practice mindfulness in their everyday living.

“As you practice more consistently, it changes the way your brain operates,” she said. “It overall impacts your whole body and whole life, just simply by thinking a little bit differently.”

Mindfulness can be practiced anytime, anywhere. Tierney recommends that people begin with a daily, 3-minute, meditative check-in with themselves. It’s a small investment, but clients reap the same benefits, she said.

“For some people, they might like going to a Buddhist temple to invest and engage in meditation,” she said.

“But it really can be done anywhere.

It’s kind of nice because even when you are traveling, there really is no excuse to not do it.”

While the idea of meditation and mindfulness may seem a bit hokey to some, the practice can help if someone is feeling overwhelmed with dayto-day stressors or is experiencing depression, anxiety and insomnia, she said.

“Anytime you feel like you’re going against the grain,” Tierney said.

NIU Cares Day’s 10th event is Saturday

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – This is the 10th year for NIU Cares Day, an annual day of volunteerism designed to help Northern Illinois University students feel more connected to the community.

Hundreds of students are expected to be shuttled from the NIU campus Saturday to help several nonprofit organizations.

“The NIU tradition serves as an introduction to service opportunities in DeKalb for many students and allows volunteers to learn more about the services available in DeKalb,” said Destiny McDonald, chairwoman of this year’s NIU Cares Day. The event, which is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon, begins with a brief orientation on campus before the students are dropped off at various sites.

In past years, students have given a hand at places such as the Kishwaukee YMCA, DeKalb Park District, Tails Humane Society, DeKalb School District 428 and the public libraries of DeKalb and Sycamore.

“Our goal for the event is that students will come away from their service project feeling inspired to continue to participate in regular community service activities long after the event,” McDonald said.

Several NIU organizations have teams of students who participate in the event, according to the university’s website. NIU Cares Day is one

JAMES A. GHERITY James A. Gherity, 87, of Kingston, IL, died Saturday, April 9, 2016, after a long battle with COPD. He was born in Highland Park, MI. He was the son of James and Florence (Van Winkle) Gherity. James was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend. In 1955, he married the love of his life, Ermadell and they lived in their dream home since 1975.

He taught Economics at Michigan State University of Buffalo and Wayne State before retiring as an Economic Professor at Northern Illinois University. He enjoyed working on his property, Lavender Hill Herb Nursery alongside his beloved wife,

spending time with his family and he especially loved to read. He also had a great love for animals. James served on the board for DeKalb County Animal Shelter for many years.

In his younger years, he served in the National Guard. James would run his prized Corvette in races, having won multiple championships. He served as an Alderman in DeKalb for 4 years. He was a great and kind man with many talents and wonderful attributes.

Dorothy G. Nutt, 95, of Genoa died Monday, April 11, 2016, in Machesney Park, Illinois. She was born Nov.10, 1920, the daughter of Hiram and Rhoda (Hannah) Nutt.

Dorothy graduated from Genoa High School.

She was the postmaster in Genoa for many years and was a member of Faith United Methodist Church. She also was involved with the Heritage Museum in Genoa and the Genoa VFW. Dorothy was an animal advocate and helped the DeKalb County Animal Shelter.

She loved to travel, fish, and play golf.

She is survived by niece, Beverly (Dorsey “Ray”) Hailey of Machesney Park; two great-nephews, Eric (Elizabeth) Nutt, Bryan (Joann) Nutt; and several great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Edwin Nutt; sisters, Helen Nutt and Ruth Wesemann.

The family would like to thank Hospice of America, for they could not have done it without them.

The prescription drug collection is aimed at preventing pill abuse and theft by ridding homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs, according

to a news release.

Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse.

Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs, according to the release.

County jail overdose death investigation continues

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Police are investigating a person they believe is responsible for supplying the drugs that killed an inmate in February at the DeKalb County Jail.

Officers found Brandon A. Washington unconscious in his cell about 2 a.m. Feb. 8 and performed CPR before having him transported to Kishwaukee Hospital. A preliminary investigation found Washington had been drinking homemade alcohol with his cellmate, according to a news release.

An autopsy determined Brandon died of a heroin overdose.

Illinois State Police have completed their investigation into the conduct of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and have turned their findings over to State’s Attorney Richard Schmack, who declined to comment on the details of the report.

“We’ve received the complete report from the state police investigation at the sheriff’s request, and it is still under review in my office,” Schmack said.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office is launching its own administrative and criminal investigation, and have identified a suspect they believe brought drugs into the jail, Sheriff Roger Scott said.

“It’s clear that the drugs got into the jail, and that’s a concern to us,” Scott said. “It’s not shocking in the sense that we know that occurs and we’ve intercepted drugs before.”

Although Scott didn’t name the suspect, the person currently has charges pending in DeKalb County, he said. The person was released from the DeKalb County Jail sometime ago, and transferred to another county’s jail, where that person posted bond, Scott said.

Brandon’s death remains under investigation.

Meditation can technically be done anywhere, but most of the services that Harness offers are geared to people who are exploring becoming more relaxed, meditative and mindful and want to involve someone else in the process. She offers individual services such as Reiki, a Japanese relaxation technique, energy balancing and a weekly Kundalini yoga class. She said she hopes to soon offer more mindfulness and relaxation workshops for children and adults, aroma therapy and vision boarding.

Kundalini yoga is the yoga of awareness, said Sonja Herington, who teaches the course.

“To me, mindfulness is getting in

touch with who your real higher self is,” she said. “So, learning to meditate and do those types of things.”

The class begins with a mantra and includes a physical component as well as a still, meditative component. Herington uses traditional gong ceremony to kick off the meditative portion of the class.

“The mind has no strength against the gong,” she said. “It helps clear the subconscious chatter and helps bring you to meditative state.”

Reiki and yoga student Sally Estes, who lives in DeKalb and comes to the wellness center regularly, said that the Reiki practices help release negative energy and the yoga helps her be more mindful throughout the week.

“It’s almost a subconscious thing,” she said. “Mindfulness implies that you are working at being conscious of your words, actions and self-talk.

Yoga allows you to do that more without thinking.”

Lawmakers frustrated by state budget impasse meet privately

By SOPHIA TAREEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Frustrated by a state budget impasse stretching into its 10th month, rank-and-file Illinois lawmakers are meeting in bipartisan groups to discuss potential solutions.

Some legislators spoke about their efforts Monday at a forum hosted by The Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, saying the goal is to present plans to legislative leaders in hopes of resolving the stalemate between Democrats who control the Legislature and Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner.

State Reps. William Davis, a Homewood Democrat, and Republican Robert Pritchard of Hinckley said they recently attended a lawmaker gathering in suburban Chicago to discuss tactics. Aside from noting revenue and reforms are in the mix, they declined to discuss specific proposals because they’re in the initial phases.

“Sure, there’s an element of frustration, there’s also an element of realism. We’re seeing the leaders aren’t willing to come together.

We’re feeling the pressure from our constituents, so we want to do something about it.”

But the legislators face a tough road in trying to convince Senate President John Cullerton and House Speaker Michael Madigan, who haven’t met with Rauner in months over

a budget deal for the fiscal year that began in July.

Democrats want Rauner to sign off on a tax increase, but Rauner first wants “structural reforms.” Democrats refuse, saying those plans – such as changes to collective bargaining – hurt working families.

Reynolds, who had been in South Africa with his 23-year-old daughter, appeared in federal court in Atlanta and was released, Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Fitzpatrick in Chicago said in an email.

Reynolds was arrested at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport when his flight arrived from Johannesburg, U.S. Marshals Service spokeswoman Belkis Cantor Sandoval said. He has pleaded not guilty on a misdemeanor charge of failing to file income tax returns from 2009 to 2012.

An arrest warrant was issued for Reynolds on March 31 when he told a judge he wouldn’t appear in court as ordered because he’s caring for a daughter whom he says has scoliosis and may also have cervical cancer. The Illinois Democrat had asked the judge “to show some compassion and understanding.”

“His case is scheduled for trial in Chicago on May 2, and we expect him to be here for it,” Fitzpatrick said after Reynolds was released.

Poll: On range of issues, Clinton has edge over Trump

WASHINGTON – In an early general election warning for Donald Trump, Americans say they trust Democrat Hillary Clinton over the Republican businessman on a range of issues, including immigration, health care and nominating Supreme Court justices.

Even when asked which of the two candidates would be best at “making American great” – the central promise of Trump’s campaign – Americans are slightly more likely to side with Clinton, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll.

The survey does reveal some potential trouble spots for Clinton. Trump is nearly even with her on whom Americans trust to handle the economy, which voters consistently rank as one of the top issues facing the country. Clinton is trusted more on the economy by 38 percent of Americans,

while 35 percent side with Trump.

And despite Americans’ overall preference for Clinton on a host of issues, just 20 percent say she represents their own views very well on matters they care about, while 23 percent say somewhat well.

But as with most issues addressed in the AP-GfK poll, the numbers for Trump are even worse: Just 15 percent of Americans say he represents their views very well and 14 percent say somewhat well.

Trump’s support with registered Republican voters is also soft on some issues, with less than 50 percent saying they trust him over Clinton on working with Congress or handling the U.S. image abroad. About a quarter of Republicans say they trust neither candidate on either of those issues.

Those figures underscore the work the real estate mogul must do to shore up support within his own party if he’s the nominee.

Greg Freeman, an independent who leans Republican, said he would “absolutely not” trust Trump to handle major issues facing the United States.

“I think he would have the U.S. in wars at the drop of a hat. He would make the international community angry at the United States,” said Freeman, a 41-year-old from Walhalla, South Carolina. “He has a lot of comments on issues, but he has no solutions.”

While Clinton and Trump are the favorites to face off in the fall campaign, obstacles remain, particularly for the Republican billionaire. He’s leading in the delegate count, but needs to perform better in the upcoming final primaries in order to reach the 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the nomination. If he fails to hit that number, the GOP contest will be decided at the party’s convention in July – and it’s unclear whether Trump’s slim campaign operation is prepared for that complex challenge.

The DeKalb Chamber of Commerce’s Restaurant Week will highlight locally and independently owned restaurants by offering weeklong discounts and specials, Chamber Executive Director Matt Duffy said.

“A lot of times you’ve maybe heard of one of these restaurants, or maybe haven’t been there in a while and this is a way to get you back out there,” Duffy said.

More than 28 restaurants throughout DeKalb and Sycamore will offer special menus and discounts, all of which are available at DeKalb.org.

Township electors can be heard tonight

Tonight is the second Tuesday in April, which has traditionally been the night when township governments in 85 counties around Illinois hold their annual meetings.

The annual town meeting traditionally takes place in the early evening at township buildings, including at 18 of DeKalb County’s 19 townships. (Afton Township officials have scheduled their annual meeting for April 19.)

Township residents are invited to attend these annual meetings, stand for election as the meeting moderator if they wish, listen to annual reports, and participate in decisions through their roles as township “electors.”

In the DeKalb County, advertisements for annual town meetings have been running in the public notice section of the Daily Chronicle, MidWeek and Valley Life since last month. Townships are required by law to post notice of their annual meetings in at least three of the most public locations around the township at least 15 days in advance, as well as in a local newspaper if one is published in the township.

Illinois is the state with by far the most units of local government, and the state’s more than 1,400 townships are a major component in that.

Townships exist to maintain roads and bridges, assess property, and provide general assistance to the poor. Some townships have expanded those roles. Some officials have proposed consolidating or eliminating township government in an effort to reduce the costs and number of local governments in our state.

Township government’s proponents often say it is the form of government “closest to the people.” The problem is, much of their operations occur under the radar with little public scrutiny.

So, how about attending your township annual meeting Tuesday and providing a little more oversight?

Shaky foundations of Trump’s wall In threatening to cut off billions of dollars in annual money transfers as a means of coercing Mexico to pay for his famous border wall, Donald Trump asserts, “We have the moral high ground here, and all the leverage.” If only.

If Trump carried out his threat, the result would be disastrous not just for Mexico, but for the United States as well. Millions of Mexicans and Mexican towns and villages, many of them already impoverished, would suddenly be deprived of a critical source of income. Hunger, disease and crime rates would spike; children would be among the most obviously and severely affected.

How does that provide a moral high ground?

As for leverage, it’s not hard to foresee massive adverse impacts for the United States arising from Trump’s plan, an effort to force his will on a country that has long been a key ally. As every general knows, the other side gets a say in how the battle is conducted.

For starters, seizing money transfers, known as remittances, as Trump threatens to do, could quickly yield a result contrary to what Trump seeks: a wave of newly impoverished Mexican immigrants seeking a better life north of the border. That would reverse the downward trend of illegal border crossings in recent years, partly stemming from better economic conditions in Mexico.

Contrary to Trump’s rhetoric, Mexico is a friendly neighbor, whose cooperation with Washington on bilateral issues is vital to North American prosperity. Mexico’s help in interdiction was key to the Obama administration’s efforts to stanch the wave of Central

American youths heading toward the United States in the summer of 2014. Mexican authorities work closely with U.S. counterparts on cross-border trucking and trade, drug and human trafficking, and money laundering, among other issues.

If U.S. officials have not always thought Mexico’s efforts were adequate, imagine what level of cooperation they could expect after a Trump administration declared economic war to extort a sum for a wall Trump prices at “$5-10 billion,” but other estimates peg as high as $25 billion.

Separately Trump has vowed to deport every immigrant who is here illegally. It seems problematic to suppose Trump could block remittances from people who would no longer be in the country to transmit them. Legal experts say it would be difficult for Trump to use the USA Patriot Act, as he proposes, to block money transfers. And distinguishing transfers by legal immigrants from those by illegal ones would pose massive administrative challenges.

Illegal crossings at the United States’ southwestern border are near a 40-year low, and since 2009 more Mexican immigrants have been leaving the country than entering it. What’s more, a third of illegal immigrants enter the country as legal ones, then overstay their visas. Trump’s plan to extort Mexico in the vain hope that a white elephant of a wall would “solve” illegal immigration is fanciful, naive and reckless, aimed more at exciting his base than grappling seriously with problems. But then, so is Trump’s entire campaign.

In recent years candidates with plurality wins like Trump’s have gained added support because they were widely acceptable. Trump isn’t widely acceptable, and he hasn’t gained added support. His 35 percent in Wisconsin against two rivals is just slightly above his poll numbers there and is identical to the 35 percent he got in New Hampshire against a dozen opponents in February.

One final note on Wisconsin: Republican turnout was higher than Democratic – 1.1 million versus 1.0 million.

Democratic turnout was not depressed by lack of suspense: Bernie Sanders won with 57 percent, and there was a hotly contested partisan race for state Supreme Court.

Republican turnout also exceeded Democratic in six other general election target states this year. That’s a vivid contrast with 2008 and a mildly positive harbinger for Republicans – if they manage to nominate a candidate without Trump’s huge negatives.

Campus dissidents victorious in court while losing

In an important decision on the rights of campus dissidents, a U.S. appeals court has held that free speech protections won’t excuse acts of harassment. But it also held that a student who has been disciplined can sue the university if the punishment was for expressing political views.

The two parts of the ruling last week by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit cut in opposite directions. The first will encourage administrators; the second will hearten student activists.

But the more important win is for the activists, who can get a day in court after being disciplined under university procedures that are often opaque.

The case grew out of events that took place in May 2011 at the California State University campus in Fresno. Neil O’Brien had arrived as a student the previous fall and quickly established himself as a campus conservative, organizing a chapter of Young Americans for Liberty and events for the Central Valley Tea Party. In particular,

O’Brien became a critic of the Fresno State administration’s attitude toward immigrant and Latino students, which included championing a student body president who was undocumented, sponsoring a Chicano/Latino commencement ceremony and supporting the Dream Act, a legislative proposal to give legal status to immigrants brought to the U.S. by their parents.

According to O’Brien, whose version of the events was relied on by the court because he was the plaintiff, university administrators had it in for him. One assistant dean, he alleged, wrote to faculty members to ask them to “gather information and complaints against him.”

Matters came to a head when O’Brien read a poem in a supplement to the school newspaper that was published by the university’s Chicano and Latin American Studies department.

The poem referred to America as “land of the biggest genocide,” “rapist of the earth” and “land of glorified killers, the eater of souls.”

O’Brien went to the CLS department with his video camera. He entered the

open office doors of two professors in succession, demanding that they speak to him about the poem. The professors, Victor Torres and Maria Lopes, each refused, and eventually closed their doors.

Both subsequently filed complaints with campus police.

In a disciplinary hearing, the university found that O’Brien had violated a provision of its student honor code that disciplines any conduct that “threatens or endangers the health or safety of any person” by means of “physical abuse, threats, intimidation, harassment, or sexual misconduct.”

The hearing officer recommended that O’Brien be banned from coming within 100 feet of the Latin American studies building.

The university did that, but it also added a crucial further piece of discipline: O’Brien was placed on disciplinary probation, which barred him from running any campus organization, including Young Americans for Liberty.

O’Brien sued, claiming the anti-harassment provision of the campus code was unconstitutional for vagueness and as applied to his conduct.

The 9th Circuit rejected those arguments in an opinion by a centrist Clinton appointee, William Fletcher. The court held that the code was less vague than federal anti-harassment laws. And it said that a reasonable person in the professors’ position could have found O’Brien’s conduct intimidating.

Yet at the same time, Fletcher gave student activists everywhere a major win. He wrote that O’Brien’s suit against Fresno State for alleged retaliation in violation of his free speech rights could go forward. According to the court, O’Brien alleged facts which, if found true, would show that the administrators targeted him for punishment that would chill free speech by prohibiting leadership of campus organizations.

In particular, Fletcher noted the allegation that the administrators had asked for information to discipline O’Brien, and that the probation O’Brien received went beyond the recommendation of the hearing officer.

“Donald J. Trump withstood the onslaught of the establishment yet again.”

That’s the first sentence in a Trump campaign statement tweeted out Tuesday night by the Washington Post’s Robert Costa. It’s also a strange way to respond to a solid defeat, reminiscent of the Monty Python knight who insists he is winning after both his arms are hacked off.

Ted Cruz – “Lyin’ Ted” to the Trump campaign – won 48 percent of the votes in Wisconsin’s Republican primary.

Trump won 35 percent. John Kasich got only 14 percent. The delegate count was even more one-sided. Cruz won 36 delegates. Trump won six. Kasich won none.

In the three weeks since March 15, Trump has made little progress in his drive to win the 1,237-delegate majority necessary for the Republican nomination. The Washington Examiner delegate count shows Trump with 743, about 494 delegates shy of 1,237. He needs to win about two-thirds of remaining delegates to get a majority. The race in Wisconsin shows why that seems increasingly unlikely. One reason is that Trump speaks conservatism as a second language he hasn’t bothered to master.

Hence his offhand remark that women who have abortions should be punished – something advocated by no one on any side of the issue. Hence his blistering attacks on Wisconsin Gov.

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The Sycamore girls soccer team kept up its domination of the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference East, and in the process prolonged DeKalb’s conference losing streak.

The Spartans earned a 3-0 win. It was not only their third straight shutout to start conference play, but the Barbs’ third straight game without a goal to start NI Big 12 action.

“Another shutout, another good win for the conference, so that’s exciting,” Sycamore coach Dave Lichamer said.

The Spartans (8-1-1, 3-0 NI Big 12 East) opened the scoring on a one-timer from Sadie Holland in the eighth minute, just over the head of DeKalb goalie Meghan Hanson, on a shot from about 35 yards out.

In the 27th minute, Jenna Lewey connected on a free kick from just outside the box, clearing the wall and forcing Hanson to dive to her left, just past her outstretched hands.

Sycamore added a goal in the 46th minute when Carly Kresge found Taylor Meier, who worked around the DeKalb defense at the top of the box and found a seam past Hanson.

“It’s pretty good. I have a good feeling about this year,” Kresge said about the team’s strong conference start. “I think we can go really far.”

DeKalb (3-4-1, 0-3) had some opportunities on offense, something Sycamore hasn’t really been allowing its opposition since conference play began. The Spartans dominated time of possession in a pair of 2-0 shutout wins against Morris and Kaneland.

“I don’t know if it was moving from the grass to the turf with the speed of the ball, or who knows,” Lichamer said. “I’ll have to watch the film and break it down. I think sometimes we were winning the ball on our defensive third and looking too far to the offensive third as opposed to coming back to the ball.”

“I don’t feel they were 3-0 better, but they were the better team tonight and you have to give them credit,” DeKalb coach P.J. Hamilton said. “A lot of props to our young ladies. The scoreboard read what it read, but we continued to fight. We got better.”

Hamilton said the Barbs remain confident and believe a conference goal is coming soon.

“Plain and simple, it’s coming,” Hamilton said. “We’re giving ourselves all the right opportunities. That’s why you play the game. The goals will come. As long as we come in and stay optimistic, as you can tell by our vibe. We saw sections of soccer better than we’ve seen. We know our play is going to continue to get better.”

The Spartans play host to Yorkville at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, and the Barbs welcome Guilford at 6 p.m.

The junior had a big day at the plate and on the mound for the Sycamore baseball team, and the Spartans cruised to a 12-1 win over Morris in their conference opener on a windy afternoon.

Mizgalski threw a complete game, allowing three hits and striking out seven. Offensively, he went 3 for 4 with three doubles and two RBIs as the Spartans (6-2 overall, 1-0 in Northern Illinois Big 12 East) collected 12 hits as a team.

“I’m more impressed with his pitching,” Sycamore coach Jason Cavanaugh said. “Obviously, we’ll take all the numbers he put up, but really good on the mound. He came out throwing strikes right away.”

Jordan Wright went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs for the Spartans, Michael Beaudoin was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Austin Perry went 2 for 2 with two runs.

Although both teams committed errors – Morris had four, Sycamore had three – the Spartans allowed no runs off their errors and scored 10 unearned runs on Morris. Sycamore, which got the leadoff batter on base in each inning, scored five in the second frame and six in the third, with both big innings coming with crucial errors by Morris.

“We executed,” said Cavanaugh, who highlighted the Spartans’ No. 8 (Jarod Montavon) and No. 9 (Aidan Hickey) hitters for coming through with important plays.

Morris (5-8, 0-1 NI Big 12 East) actually jumped out early against the Spartans, after Danny Borgstrom led off the game with a double and scored on a single by Danny Walker. Mizgalski, who was credited with the loss after struggling in three innings pitched in a 6-3 defeat to Hononegah in his last outing, struck out two batters to end the inning. Morris got a runner past first base only one more time the rest of the way.

“I was happier with my pitching today because I had a rough outing last time,” Mizgalski said. “I wanted to come back strong against Morris, but my hitting was definitely a plus, too. I was happy with both.”

The two teams play the second game of the series at 4:30 p.m. today in Morris.

Struggle in 2nd half of NI Big 12 East opener

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The Yorkville baseball team exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put away DeKalb in a 17-3 victory after six innings Monday.

Yorkville (6-4, 1-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) had six walks in the big inning.

DeKalb (3-5, 0-1 NI Big 12 East) was unable to score any runs in the bottom half of the inning – forcing the game to end by way of the 10-run rule.

The late-inning collapse came after a series of mental errors committed by the Barbs earlier in the game.

“We get down on ourselves and it’s part of our makeup that we have to work through to improve,” DeKalb coach Justin Keck said. “We made a few mistakes, and right now we’re not at a point where, mentally, some or all of our players are able to let it go and keep playing. I believe in these guys and I know it’ll change.”

The Barbs were hanging right alongside the Foxes for three innings with starting pitcher Jake Perkins

on the mound. After three innings, the Foxes held a 4-2 lead before the offense switched gears and scored 13 runs in the final three innings.

Perkins allowed 13 hits and four earned runs before he was pulled.

The leading batter for the Foxes was center fielder Mark Sommers, who went 3 for 4 with three RBIs. DeKalb’s Danny Garcia finished 0 for 2, but scored a run and had an RBI. Despite showing their ability to get players on base and score runs quickly, Yorkville coach Scott Luken doesn’t credit his team’s offense as its strong suit.

“We don’t exactly know what our strength is on this team and we’re still trying to find it,” Luken said. “Overall, I would say our pitching has been strong this year, and Ty Liaromatis was great on the mound for us today.”

Liaromatis had a productive outing after finishing the game by allowing seven hits with five strikeouts after six innings.

Moving forward after a tough loss, Keck is confident in his team’s ability to bounce back.

“The great thing about this conference is we get to turn around and play again the next day,” Keck said.

“We’re going to change some things up and give some guys the opportunity to play and keep working step-bystep and battle through it.”

SHABBONA – The Indian Creek softball team picked up its first win in five tries, beating Hinckley-Big Rock, 12-2, in five innings Monday.

The Timberwolves (1-4, 1-1 Little Ten Conference) were quick to capitalize on the young, shorthanded Royals.

“We didn’t hit well for power, but whenever they made an error, we cap-

italized on it,” Timberwolves coach Alyx Bickel said. “We played some great defense. We gave up two runs in the first on some very well-placed infield singles.”

Center fielder Olivia Harvell led the charge offensively for Indian Creek, going 2 for 2 with a triple, a single and two walks while scoring three times and driving in a run.

“Today I focused on not dropping my hands,” Harvell said. “It’s a prob-

lem that I have been working on, and today I stayed on top of the ball and drove it.

Because of illnesses, the Royals only had eight players available, opting to play with two outfielders rather than take a forfeit or try to reschedule. Royals coach Kristy Harrod said things like that come with the job when coaching for a smaller school.

“It’s not our first rodeo,” Harrod said. “This has happened to us before.

We’re a smaller athletic department, and when a few girls are sick, it happens.”

NASCAR clouding

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – There are Democrats who enjoy NASCAR. Jews and atheists and women, too.

You wouldn’t know it lately, not after several events this season, including the invocation before Saturday night’s race at Texas Motor Speedway.

Duck Commander founder Phil Robertson used the address to pray “that we put a IN THE Jesus man in the White House” and noted that “all right Texas, PITS we got here via Bibles and Jenna guns.”

Robertson, a star of “Duck Fryer Dynasty,” has publicly voiced his support for Ted Cruz in the presidential race. His son, Willie, has endorsed GOP front-runner Donald Trump, and the family always has been vocal with its conservative beliefs. It shouldn’t have been a surprise when Robertson used his time on stage to push an agenda.

Yet in many ways it was because NASCAR has tried for the past several years to present itself as a sport that embraces diversity, that no longer tolerates many of the racial stereotypes so often associated with the sport.

Last year, NASCAR chairman Brian France took a strong stance against the presence of Confederate flags at race tracks and said he would do everything in his legal power to prevent them from being displayed. It was a progressive move and unusual.

in abandoning. In Texas, it happened to give Robertson the chance to promote his conservative views, which ultimately are a reflection on NASCAR. Three years ago, the Texas speedway allowed the National Rifle Association to be the title sponsor of its spring race only months after NASCAR participated in a deal that put a car in the Daytona 500 that specifically honored the victims of the Sandy Hook school shooting.

It was an embarrassing mixed message and NASCAR swiftly issued guidelines requiring approval for race naming rights. The policy gives NASCAR the option to reject a sponsor if its “brand has been tarnished by controversy, crisis or circumstance such that its association with the event would damage the NASCAR brand or the image of the sport.”

Whether Robertson violated that clause Saturday night is a matter of opinion. Either way, NASCAR needs to take a serious look at the message that is being delivered each week and how entering the political arena is clouding the image France wants to project.

Sports are supposed to be entertainment, after all, and most fans don’t tune in expecting or wanting to see soapbox speeches. It’s why the stick-and-ball leagues try to stay neutral. When they do embrace America, it’s done in safe ways such as the singing of “God Bless America” or recognizing military personnel.

The logos for Major League Baseball, the NBA and the NFL all are red, white and blue, and league leaders tend to avoid politics and polarizing positions in an effort not to offend fans who don’t share their views.

NASCAR always has been the exception.

The France family, which owns the series, has long welcomed political candidates at their events and has a history of making public endorsements. NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. endorsed George Wallace for president. Brian France last month endorsed Trump, and even recruited a handful of drivers to attend a Trump rally in Georgia.

The Trump endorsement was met with significant backlash, and France

said he was disappointed his record on promoting diversity suddenly had been called into question. He has spent at least the past decade trying to help his family business shed its image as a sport for intolerant rednecks, but there is no away around it: His Trump endorsement put those efforts at risk.

Then came the Robertson commentary Saturday night, which Texas Motor Speedway officials said Monday they did not know was coming.

The Robertsons and Duck Dynasty had a three-year sponsorship agreement with the speedway, and the contract allowed the family to fill all honorary roles however they chose. The Robertsons even had a lesser-known family member sing a cringe-worthy version of the national anthem, but Will Robertson’s vocals were the least of NASCAR’s problems after the stump speech from the family patriarch.

His stance, coupled with France’s endorsement of Trump, presents a confusing picture of what NASCAR represents.

Morris earned the win by pitching a one-hitter with seven strikeouts and didn’t allow an earned run. Offensively, Trevor Guerra led the way for the Timberwolves by going 3 for 4 with three RBIs, and Caleb Cursio was 1 for 2 with an RBI. Hinckley-Big Rock starter Jacob Morsch took the loss but allowed only one earned run on three hits and struck out eight.

Kaneland falls late: At Crystal Lake, the Knights allowed three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and lost to Prairie Ridge, 5-3.

SPORTS BRIEFS Collins decides to stay Russell, Cubs top Reds in home opener at Oregon State Seth Collins has decided to stay with Oregon State, the school announced Monday.

Collins had signed with Northern Illinois this year, but the former Beavers quarterback announced he would return to Oregon State as a receiver. He played in eight games as a freshman, including starting seven. He led the team in total offense with 1,516 yards – 936 passing and 580 rushing – and had eight rushing touchdowns and six passing scores. He had fallen out of favor as a quarterback at the end of the season for Oregon State, and moved to receiver.

The Huskies announced Collins had signed Feb. 4.

The Huskies are in the final two weeks of their spring season, with the Huskie Bowl slated for 2 p.m. April 23.

Alex Hoffman, 22, a flight instructor for Fly America out of the DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport and a meteorology student at Northern Illinois University knew the exact coordinates of Fairdale; he had been there plenty of times before.

A year ago, Hoffman, then a student studying meteorology at College of DuPage, chased the EF4 tornado from Rochelle to Fairdale with a group of friends on the ground on that fated April 9.

A day later, he was asked by the National Weather Service for aerial photographs of Fairdale for meteorologists to help classify the tornado as an EF4.

Hoffman jokes he was born to fly since his father is a pilot and his mother is a flight attendant. He’s at his happiest when his two passions, aviation and meteorology combine.

Immune response can lead to sepsis Dear Dr. K: My father had routine surgery. Soon after, he developed something called sepsis that almost killed him. He’s OK now, but I’d like to understand what happened to him.

Dear Reader: He and you are lucky. Not everyone makes it. Sepsis is a condition in which the immune system goes awry.

Think of the immune system as our personal army, with an arsenal of weapons. It is meant to protect us from foreign invaders (such as germs). Unfortunately, in attacking foreign germs, it sometimes can go overboard – and its weapons can injure us.

The condition that often triggers sepsis is a bacterial infection. Other causes can lead to sepsis, including autoimmune diseases, surgery and severe burns. In all of these cases, the immune system is being called to help us heal from some injury. However, when the immune response is both too vigorous and too prolonged, healthy tissues can be damaged.

Sepsis is treated with antibiotics; the idea is to kill the bacteria that have triggered the attack by the immune system.

Drugs that increase blood pressure also may be given since sepsis often results in low blood pressure. A person also might need supplemental oxygen and intravenous fluids, depending on his or her symptoms.

Sepsis is fairly common. There are between 1 million and 2 million cases every year in the United States. A decade ago, I was one of those cases. I had many of the main features of sepsis. Fairly suddenly, I felt completely exhausted and had a very high fever. I developed a rapid heart rate, rapid breathing, low blood pressure, pale and mottled skin, very high numbers of white blood cells, very high blood markers of inflammation and somewhat low

I don’t think I had an alteration in my mental state, as some people with sepsis do. Then again, a person with an altered mental state isn’t the best judge of whether he has an altered mental state.

I was pretty sick for a few days, but I recovered fully. I was lucky. If sepsis is not promptly recognized and treated, it can cause the lungs, kidneys, liver, heart and brain to fail.

Certain people appear to be at increased risk for sepsis. They include people older than age 65, people with diabetes, people with cancer and people who are taking drugs that suppress the immune system.

Two common bacterial infections that can cause sepsis, particularly in older people, are pneumonia and urinary tract infection. I urge my older patients to call me promptly if they develop an unusual cough or breathlessness (possible symptoms of pneumonia) or painful and frequent urination (possible symptoms of urinary infection).

It was a weird experience to be a doctor, to have a sudden medical emergency and to know exactly what was happening.

Fortunately, I was at the hospital when I got sick and got prompt treatment. I’ll never know for sure, but I think it saved my life.

Recently, a guy I’ve known for more than a year decided it would be best for us to part ways. Before Christmas, I had asked what he would like for Christmas. His response was, “I don’t want anything for Christmas – I want you.”

A couple of weeks later, he told me the pictures, nightstand, candy dishes and candleholders he had in my apartment were gifts from him because he loved me. Tonight, he packed everything up and left. I don’t know exactly why, but I think it has more to do with his own issues than about me.

Abby, I feel I have been manipulated and used. Ironically, this man I thought was a friend is a psychotherapist. While we were together, he would discuss confidential information about some of his clients with me.

I think I should report him, but on the other hand, I’m asking myself whether I’m only looking for revenge.
