Affordable Model 3 is Tesla’s biggest test yet

DETROIT – The promise of an affordable electric car from Tesla Motors had hundreds of people lining up to reserve one.

Tesla planned to unveil its Model 3 Thursday night at its Los Angeles design studio. It doesn’t go on sale until late 2017, but potential buyers could reserve one with a $1,000 deposit at Tesla stores starting Thursday morning.

Long lines, reminiscent of the crowds at Apple stores for early models of the iPhone, were reported from Hong Kong to Austin, Texas, to Washington.

At a starting price of $35,000 – before federal and state government incentives – the Model 3 is less than half the cost of Tesla’s previous models. The car is expected to have a range of at least 200 miles when fully charged, about double what drivers get from competitors in its price range, such as the Nissan Leaf and BMW i3.

Robin Santucci got the sixth spot in line when he arrived at the Santa Monica, California, Tesla store at 3:45 a.m. Thursday. By 9 a.m., he estimated there were 200 people in line.

Santucci has admired Tesla for years. When he got his current car, an electric Fiat 500, he made sure the lease would run out at the end of 2017 so his next car could be the Model 3.

“The design of every other car they’ve put out is beautiful,” said Santucci, who works in digital advertising and lives in West Hollywood.

Santucci added that he didn’t want to wait too long to order a car because the federal tax credit of $7,500 will sunset once Tesla sells 200,000 vehicles in the U.S. That’s likely several years away, but customers like Santucci want to be sure they qualify.

The Model 3 is the most serious test yet of 13-year-old Tesla’s ability to go from a niche player to a full-fledged automaker. It could be the car that finally makes electrics mainstream – or customers could be scared off by Tesla’s limited number of stores, chargers and service centers. Tesla didn’t release details about the car before the event.

Right now, Tesla sells two vehicles: The Model S sedan, which starts at $71,000, and the Model X SUV, which starts around $80,000. But a lower-priced car has been a longtime goal of Tesla CEO Elon Musk. In a 2006 blog post, Musk said Tesla planned to build “a wide range of models, including affordably priced family cars” in order to speed the world toward a solar-powered future.

The Model 3 puts Tesla within reach of millions more customers. Last year, only 2.1 percent of new cars purchased in the U.S. cost $75,000 or more, but 35 percent – or 5.5 million – cost $35,000 or more, according to TrueCar. The Model 3 is a critical part of the money-losing automaker’s plan to increase sales from around 85,000 this year to 500,000 by 2020.

But Tesla faces several hurdles. U.S. buyers remain skeptical of electric cars, and low gas prices haven’t helped already anemic sales.

Sales of new electric vehicles grew 6 percent in the U.S. last year, but they still remain less than 1 percent of the overall vehicle market, according to IHS Automotive. Tesla also faces growing competition from big, deep-pocketed rivals like General Motors Co.

Lawyers: His claim of innocence in Maria Ridulph’s murder now undisputed Know more

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Attorneys for Jack D. McCullough have asked a judge to release him from prison immediately on the grounds that he is innocent of the 1957 murder of 7-year-old Maria Ridulph, according to documents filed recently in DeKalb County Court.

A hearing on McCullough’s request is set for 9:30 a.m. today at the DeKalb County Courthouse before Judge William Brady.

“The state’s attorney’s findings, after a six-month investigation, left no doubt that Mr. McCullough’s conviction in the 1957 murder of Maria Ridulph cannot stand,” the filing, made on McCullough’s behalf by a court-appointed lawyer, reads. “Mr. McCullough respectfully moves the court to enter judgment for him on the pleadings, which are uncontested, and for his immediate release based on actual innocence.”

Brady appointed Chicago lawyers Gabriel Fuentes and Shaun Van Horn of Jenner & Block to represent McCullough on Wednesday, and they wasted no time in pushing for him to be released from prison.

McCullough, 76, was convicted in 2012 of Maria’s murder and is serving a life sentence at the Pontiac Correctional Center. However, last week, DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack answered McCullough’s petition for post-conviction relief by saying that new evidence showed McCullough was innocent and the state had created an inaccurate timeline of events to convict him.

In the event that McCullough’s conviction is not immediately vacated, Fuentes asked Brady to release McCullough on his own recognizance while his petition makes its way through the court system, court records show.

“Solely in the alternative, in any event Mr. McCullough is not released immediately, he should be granted an own-recognizance bail,” Fuentes wrote in the motion. “The Illinois Constitution guarantees a criminal

defendant’s right to bail except in certain narrow circumstances.”

McCullough has been steadfast in maintaining his innocence, and the state no longer is disputing his claim.

In his response to McCullough’s handwritten petition, Schmack said police and prosecutors worked to conceal the truth from grand juries and judges. Now, newly unearthed Illinois Bell phone records show McCullough was 40 miles away at the time of Maria Ridulph’s disappear-

ance, Schmack said.

“It is a manifest impossibility for [McCullough] to have been in Sycamore at 6:45 and also have made a phone call in downtown Rockford at 6:57,” Schmack said. “Thousands of pages of improperly excluded police reports more than 20 years old contain a wealth of information pointing to McCullough’s innocence, and absolutely nothing showing guilt.”

At trial, prosecutors said that Maria had been kidnapped Dec. 3, 1957, from the corner of Archie Place and

Center Cross Street about an hour earlier.

In seeking his release, McCullough’s attorneys essentially cited Schmack’s findings, saying they had labeled the state’s investigation a fraud and McCullough’s 2012 conviction was based on an “avalanche of errors” and “denials of due process.”

His release is merited since prosecutors knew McCullough was nowhere near the crime scene at the time of Maria Ridulph’s disappearance, and the investigation allowed fraudulent testimony and unreliable eyewitness identification, Fuentes wrote.

“To use this sort of evidence at a criminal trial in the United States of America shocks the conscience,” the motion said.

McCullough’s attorneys also have asked that Brady deny a request from Maria’s brother, Charles Ridulph, to have a special prosecutor appointed in the case. In court records, they said there is no call for a special prosecutor because Schmack has neither a conflict of interest nor any other reason he cannot perform his duties as prosecutor.

In a five-page motion he filed himself, Charles Ridulph made a plea for a special prosecutor for the case as an interested party under the Rights of Crime Victims and Witnesses Act. His request detailed his belief that Schmack was wrong to have based his conclusions in the case on information that was not allowed at trial, and that he is acting more as a defense lawyer than a prosecutor.

“What Mr. Schmack is doing is wrong,” Ridulph wrote in his filing.

“Mr. Schmack is presenting as truth that which the presiding trial Judge (James) Hallock and the panel of appellate court judges had ruled were not admissible as truth.”

Archaeologists dig into Glidden Homestead

DeKALB – Archaeologists are digging into DeKalb home of barbed wire baron Joseph F. Glidden – just off Lincoln Highway – and the community is welcome to take a look as the excavation continues.

Eli Orrvar, an archaeology graduate student at Northern Illinois University, is working with Glidden Homestead director Rob Glover to explore the history of the barn that sits on the homestead, which was built around 1870, Glover said.

Joseph F. Glidden patented his idea for the unique fencing in 1874 and began manufacturing wire on the farm before relocating to larger facilities. When fully excavated and restored, the exhibit will show a unique time in DeKalb history, as it was on the cusp of industry transition from agriculture to manufacturing, Glover said.

“We have this plan for the usage and historical restoration,” Glover said.

“The idea is to clear this off so we can clear [the flooring] and then dig those test pits and see if there are artifacts in there.”

The team already has found a few interesting items such as a glass medicine bottle, a kitchen knife handle and fragments of glass, coal and animal bones at a surface level dig, so it is likely more artifacts will emerge, Orrvar said.

“But you never want to get your hopes too high,” he said. “It’s always better to be halfway surprised than disappointed.”

There are a few different ways to estimate how old an item is, from research to carbon dating, depending on the artifact, Orrvar said.

“That usually comes after the digging is done,” he said. “You do your field stage and then the lab stage. It’s hard to do both at once because just looking

The goal is to complete the excavation by July or August, but a lot of different factors can affect how long the process takes, Orrvar said.

“If we open a test pit and it’s extremely dense with artifacts or there is a feature that is going off in a different direction, we have to open another test pit,” he said.

What happens with the items found-

just depends on what’s there.

Finding a piece of barbed wire or something else related to that part of the barn history would be ideal, but since it was the wire manufacturing site for only a little while, that might not happen, Glover said.

“It’s such a small period of time,” he said. “Historically, we really know what happened here, but what else were they using it for?”

Glidden had more than 20 patents,

and there is no telling what went on in the barn, which has made the project even more interesting than it was at the start, Glover said.

“We have to shore everything up and make it safe,” Glover said. “We initially just needed to know where everything was. Now it’s sort of shifted. … We really want to know, what is it, what went on here, what does it hold.”

OBITUARIES PAUL H. DOLDER Born: Nov. 9, 1939 Died: March 29, 2016

Paul H. Dolder, age 76, of Waterman, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2016. He was born on Nov. 9, 1939, in DeKalb, the son of Ralph H. and Evelyn (Murray) Dolder.

Paul was united in marriage on June 23, 1962, to the former Carole Foster and they spent the next 53 happy years together.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle who will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.

Mr. Dolder was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Somonauk. Paul was a 1958 graduate of Waterman High School in Waterman. He was for many years the owner and operator of Dolder Electric in Waterman.

Paul was employed by Conserv FS in Waterman. He was formerly employed as Head of Building & Grounds by the DeKalb School District in DeKalb. Paul was also formerly employed by DeKalb County Government in Sycamore. Mr. Dolder was the former Mayor of the Village of Waterman. He loved tractors and working on old trucks. Paul was very talented at HVAC and electrical work.

He is survived by his wife, Carole Dolder of Waterman, IL; his children, Annette (Mark McGee) McNally of Sandwich, IL, and Andrew (Linda) Dolder of Waterman, IL; his grandchildren, Kyle Smethurst, Mackenzie McNally, Meredith McNally, Steven Szymanski, Mark Szymanski; Todd (Tara) Kocsis, and Scott Kocsis; his sister, Lynne (Patrick) Upton of South Elgin, IL; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Evelyn Dolder.

She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1965 where she was still active in the Women’s Circle. She was also a member of the DeKalb Women’s Club and the YMCA where she loved to swim. Volunteering at Kishwaukee Hospital and Delivering Meals on Wheels was an important part of her life before Chuck died.

Colleen enjoyed traveling throughout her life, she visited all of the lower 48 states and also visiting Norway, Denmark, France, Germany and Italy. She loved to read, sew, garden, bake, and spend time with her children, grandchildren, and many family members, but especially, her great-grandson, Jack.

She is survived by her children, Robert (Jane) Jensen of Grayslake, Susan (Ken) Doubler of DeKalb, Penny (Paul) Milnamow of Elgin; grandchildren, Michael (Lindy-Tsetseranos) Milnamow of West Dundee, Stephanie Milnamow of Elgin, Patrick (Kristin Crichton) Milnamow of Elgin, Alexander Jensen of Grayslake; step-granddaughter, Karyn Doubler of Cortland; great-grandson, Jack Charles Romano Milnamow of Elgin; brothers, Ron (Tae Sun) Alexander of Huntsville, Alabama, Jerry (Mattie) Alexander of Punta Gorda, Florida; sisters, D. County unemployment hits 6.8 percent in Feb.

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The unemployment rate in DeKalb County stood at 6.8 percent in February, up from 6.1 percent in February 2015, according to preliminary figures released Thursday by the Illinois Department of Employment Security and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The jobless rate in the city of DeKalb was 6.3 percent in February, up from 5.8 percent in February 2015. The unemployment rate identifies people who are out of work and looking for work. It is not tied to collecting unemployment insurance benefits.

“Illinois’ overall job growth rate remains among the slowest in the country and metro area unemployment rates continue to rise, even with an increase in jobs in February,” IDES Director Jeff Mays said in a news release.

“Structural reforms will provide the resources we need to more effectively

build a stronger workforce and help communities towards achieving economic stability.”

The Illinois Department of Employment Security said unemployment rose in February in all of the state’s metropolitan areas. The increase in the unemployment rate in most metropolitan areas is partially because of more people looking for work, Mays said.

The Decatur metro area had the highest unemployment rate with 8.4 percent, an increase of 1 percentage point from the same period last year.

The Urbana-Champaign metro area had the lowest rate of unemployment at 6.2 percent, a 0.8 percentage point increase from last year.

Illinois businesses added jobs in eight metro areas, with Lake-Kenosha showing a 2.3 percent increase, Rockford showing a 2.1 percent increase and Champaign a 1.9 percent increase.

SANDWICH – A Sandwich teen died Wednesday after a car crash in LaSalle County.

The LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from Illinois State Police District 17, responded at 3:47 p.m.

Wednesday to a report of a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Route 52 and County Highway 3 between the Fox River and Route 71, according to a news release.

According to preliminary reports, Sarah L. Coleman, 66, of Mendota, was driving westbound on Route 52 in a Jeep Cherokee when she approached the intersection of County Highway 3.

A Pontiac Grand Am, driven by the teen, was allegedly traveling southbound on County Highway 3 – also

known as E. 2603rd Road – when it failed to stop at the intersection and was struck by the Jeep Cherokee.

Emergency crews from Sheridan, Serena and Kendall County responded to the scene. Both drivers were taken by ambulance to OSF Saint Elizabeth Medical Center in Ottawa where the juvenile was pronounced dead. Coleman was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. No other passengers were in either vehicle.

The case is under investigation by the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office, the LaSalle County Coroner’s Office and the LaSalle County State’s Attorney’s Office.

A corporal from the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday the department wouldn’t release details of the young man’s age, pending further investigation.

PEORIA – An Illinois airport was evacuated for about three hours Thursday morning after a passenger had a bag that appeared to contain tubes of explosive material, although security officials determined it wasn’t a bomb.

The Peoria International Airport was evacuated just after 6:30 a.m. Thursday and reopened about 9:30 a.m., airport Director Gene Olson said. The Peoria Police Department’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit was called after the suspicious items were found during routine security screenings, Olson said.

Police union hires officer accused in teen’s death

CHICAGO – A white Chicago police officer charged with murder in the shooting of a black teenager has been hired to work as a janitor for the city’s police union as he awaits trial, the union president said Thursday, prompting protests.

Dean Angelo, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Chicago, said the union hired Jason Van Dyke about three weeks ago. Van Dyke is accused of shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times

in 2014. The shooting was captured on squad-car video and has prompted investigations, including a federal civil rights probe of the Chicago Police Department. Van Dyke has been suspended from the department without pay.

The union would do the same for any Chicago officer and have hired dozens of people who are in no-pay status, Angelo said.

Man exonerated of murders charged with battery

CHICAGO – A man who was awarded $10 million by the city of Chicago in 2013 after spending 25 years in prison for a double murder he didn’t commit is charged with aggravated battery.

The Chicago Tribune reported 50-yearold Eric Caine is held without bond after being arrested Sunday at his Riverside home. It wasn’t immediately known if Caine has legal representation.

Police said they responded to reports of a disturbance at Caine’s home and found two men battered and bleeding outside the residence. The men told police Caine attacked them after “words were exchanged.”

Police said the men were treated for

their injuries at a hospital.

Caine’s conviction in the 1986 slayings of Vincent and Rafaela Sanchez was largely based on a confession made after he was physically abused by Chicago detectives.

Churches becoming targets for thieves

WAUKEGAN – Suburban Chicago police said the fact that churches are soft targets might be behind a string of church burglaries and vandalism.

Waukegan police Cmdr. Joe Florip said Wednesday investigators don’t believe religion is a factor in the crime spree that began earlier this month.

Police said the first of four church burglaries occurred the evening of March 22 and was reported the next day. The three other churches were burglarized and vandalized Sunday evening. Stolen items included computers, printers, crucifixes, candlestick holders and cash.

Florip said the churches are open, inviting places and that likely made them desirable for those involved in the crimes.

Waukegan police said patrols will be increased around all religious venues.

RICHMOND, Va. – A gunman shot a Virginia state trooper Thursday at a busy bus terminal in the capital city of Richmond before he was shot dead by two other troopers, police said. Two civilians also were shot but were expected to recover.

The trooper’s injuries were life-threatening, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

Initially, state police had said in a news release that two troopers were taken to a hospital, but Geller later told reporters that only one had been hurt.

Geller said the civilians’ injuries were not life-threatening.

Officials: U.S. considers easing ban to help Iran

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration is considering easing financial restrictions that prohibit U.S. dollars from being used in transactions with Iran, U.S. officials said.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California lawmakers on Thursday approved the nation’s highest statewide minimum wage of $15 an hour to take effect by 2022 after it was hailed by Democrats as an example to the nation as it struggles with a growing gap between rich and poor.

The legislation now goes to Gov. Jerry Brown, who said he will sign it into law Monday after previously working out the plan with labor unions.

Brown said the measure approved by the Legislature proves again that California can get things done and help people get ahead.

The state of New York was considering a similar move.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS MADISON, Wis. – Next Tuesday’s Wisconsin presidential primary is emerging as a crucial lifeline for Republicans desperate to stop Donald Trump’s march to their party’s nomination. One of his worst weeks of the 2016 campaign is colliding with a state already skeptical of his brash brand of politics.

A big loss for Trump in Wisconsin would greatly reduce his chances of securing the delegates he needs to clinch the GOP nomination before next July’s national convention. It also could offer new hope to rival Ted Cruz and outside groups that see Trump as a threat to the future of the Republican Party.

“I think the whole country is looking to Wisconsin right now to make a choice in this race, and I think the choice Wisconsin makes is going to have repercussions for a long time to come,” Cruz said Thursday in an interview with Milwaukee radio station WTMJ. Trump’s view is rosier for his own campaign: “If we win Wisconsin, it’s pretty much over.”

But almost nothing has gone right for him since Wisconsin stepped into the primary spotlight.

Even before he arrived, Trump was skewered in interviews with a trio of Wisconsin’s influential conservative talk radio hosts. On Tuesday, just hours before his first campaign stop, two-term Gov. Scott Walker threw his support behind Cruz, of Texas.

Much of the trouble that followed was of the Trump campaign’s own making. Corey Le-

wandowski, Trump’s campaign manager, got slapped with a charge of simple battery for an altercation with a reporter. Then Trump was forced to walk back his assertion that women should be punished for getting abortions, a comment that managed to unite both sides of the abortion debate in fierce opposition to his statement.

“As soon as he stepped foot in Wisconsin the mask finally came off,” said state Rep. Jim Steineke, the Republican majority leader in the Wisconsin Assembly. “Part of it is just the Wisconsin nice. We don’t take too kindly to people who act the way Donald Trump acts.”

GOP voter Linda Ruddy, a 48-year-old dental hygienist from Oshkosh, agreed.

“He’s rude. He’s arrogant. He’s a loose cannon. He’s insulting to women,” Ruddy said.

A poll run by Marquette University Law School has shown Trump holding steady at around 30 percent in Wisconsin, a level of support that gave him a lead in the state last month. But the latest survey released this week showed Cruz surging past the real estate mogul, topping him by 10 points.

“Everybody is going to want to write that he got taken down,” Cruz’s campaign manager Jeff Roe said of Trump. “The fact is he didn’t get taken down. The fact is that we’re consolidating.”

If Cruz sweeps all the delegates in Wisconsin, Trump will need to win 57 percent of the remaining delegates in other states to collect the 1,237 he needs to clinch the nomination.

So far, he has won 48 percent of all delegates awarded.

Mayor facing charges should resign post When this Editorial Board last checked in on Hebron Village President John Jacobson, he was shaking down a homeless veterans shelter to benefit a town tavern.

Jacobson, who was elected village president in 2013, was willing to hold hostage a shelter grant that was completely unrelated to an ongoing dispute over a water main.

Believe it or not, that pales in comparison to Jacobson’s brushes with the law, including his most recent episode.

On March 22, Jacobson was arrested on drug and firearms charges after police found cocaine, drug paraphernalia and a shotgun and ammunition in his home after a March 17 incident in which 911 was called after he was not breathing and beginning to turn blue.

The two most serious charges Jacobson faces – unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a firearm without a requisite firearms owner identification card – are felonies. Jacobson’s other incidents are well-documented: • In July 2014, Jacobson entered a plea of no contest to an amended charge of reckless driving to resolve a drunken driving case in Wisconsin.

• The drunken driving charge came while he was on probation in McHenry County after pleading down a felony crack cocaine possession charge to a misdemeanor in 2013. The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office decided not to pursue an additional sentence for violating his probation.

• The crack cocaine charge came in 2013 during Jacobson’s village president campaign. He was pulled over with what police said was about 3 grams of crack cocaine in his car. While the charges were still unresolved, Jacobson won election with 61 percent of the village’s vote.

Jacobson is a man who should not be in office. Unfortunately, Hebron voters elected him despite pending crack cocaine charges. Regardless, Jacobson must go.

The right thing for him to do is to resign. If he refuses to resign, no plea deal the state’s attorney’s office entertains should be accepted without an agreement that Jacobson resigns. Otherwise, the state’s attorney’s office should vigorously work to convict on the felony charges.

A felony conviction would boot Jacobson from office.

If all else fails, voters in Hebron will have the opportunity to elect a new village president next year. Here’s hoping somebody responsible in Hebron steps up and fills the leadership void their village clearly lacks.

Be honest about escalation against ISIS With the military campaign against the Islamic State making some progress, American officials have begun to sharpen plans to expel the terrorist organization from two major cities it still controls.

Recapturing Raqqa, in northern Syria, and Mosul, in northern Iraq, from the Islamic State is critical. But President Barack Obama has not made the case for expanding America’s role in the fighting, nor has he given a forthright assessment of the resources that would be required.

Since Obama authorized the first airstrikes in Iraq and Syria in 2014 to curb the rise of the Islamic State, administration officials have been vague and at times disingenuous about the evolution of a military campaign that has escalated sharply.

White House officials initially pledged not to commit ground troops to the effort. They later deployed small teams on the ground, which have been conducting raids in Iraq and Syria.

After a Marine was killed in a rocket attack in northern Iraq, Pentagon officials last week said American troops were deployed in a previously undisclosed remote base and conducting artillery strikes.

Gen. Joseph Dunford Jr., the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, sought to portray the artillery battery that came under attack as analogous to air power. “This is no different than aviation fires we’ve been delivering,” he told reporters last week at the Pentagon. “This happens to be surface fires.”

The two are, in fact, different, and they expose troops to different degrees of risk.

The Pentagon has refused in recent days to disclose how many American troops are

deployed in Iraq. Last year, Obama set a cap of 3,870 American troops, but the Defense Department has been exceeding it by not counting service members on short temporary assignments and those who overlap for a short period with units that are being replaced.

The White House last week provided a synopsis of the next steps in the campaign against the Islamic State in a seven-page report to Congress. It says that the group has not had a major military victory since May, and American warplanes have significantly cut its revenue by bombing oil trucks and other targets.

The report says the American military will “intensify airstrikes and raids,” continue to advise Iraqi and Kurdish troops and “increase training of local police and volunteer forces.” It does not acknowledge that a far larger number of ground troops would be needed to do that.

Obama needs to be straightforward about deploying more troops. “It has not been transparent for the public,” Representative Mac Thornberry, the Texas Republican who leads the House Armed Services Committee, said in an interview, referring to the evolution of the military campaign. “My view is that the president jumps through hoops because of his views of this politically.”

Obama has not made a clear argument that giving the Pentagon a freer hand can lead to greater success against ISIS. It seems inevitable that the next president will be dealing with this fight.

Obama would do his successor a favor by being frank with the American people about the struggle and choices ahead.

And, no, I don’t think that Facebook photo of our dog Franklin in the Hillary Clinton wig was too far. This is the problem when you’ve got an entire generation of Democrats who never spent time in a union hall. So touchy.

Anyway, back to Susan Sarandon.

When Chris Hayes asked her if she’d vote for Clinton over Donald Trump, she said, “I don’t know. I’m going to see what happens.”

A friend whose passion for Clinton makes my support look like a symptom of anemia sent an immediate text quoting Sarandon, along with a few other words we don’t need to get into. I texted – is that a verb yet? – my response: “I’m sure you heard her wrong.”

She has sent me a screenshot of that exchange only about 100 times now, always with a link to yet another story

about Sarandon’s inexplicably ridiculous comments that followed.

I think a lot of people are sorry, I can’t bring myself to do that.

HAYES: How about you personally?

SARANDON: I don’t know. I’m going to see what happens.

HAYES: Really?

SARANDON: Really.

HAYES: I cannot believe as you’re watching the ..., if Donald Trump ...

SARANDON: Some people feel Donald Trump will bring the revolution immediately if he gets in. Then things will really, you know, explode.

Well, that went about as well as you can imagine, particularly on social media. If you haven’t see any of the tirades, let’s just say Susan Sarandon is either the mighty prophet who will finally conquer Sisyphus or so blinded by her privilege that she can’t picture the visual disconnect of someone like her claiming she needs a revolution.

Sarandon has since denied – via Twitter, of course – ever saying shewould vote for Trump.

“Of course I would never support Trump for any reason,” she responded to actor Jamie Lee Curtis. “If you watch the interview you’ll see that’s not what I said.”

When my friend sent along a screenshot of that tweet, I responded with a line from Sarandon’s character Annie Savoy in “Bull Durham”: “The world is made for people who aren’t cursed with self-awareness.”

There’s a way out of Republicans’ dead end

Big Business is having big doubts about its traditional political allies.

Sen. Ted Cruz, who not long ago was considered the most offensive presidential candidate imaginable, is now the best-case scenario. Meanwhile, Donald Trump continues his march toward collecting the most delegates for the Republican presidential nomination in July, by which time it’s doubtful there will be an American woman or racial minority whom he hasn’t alienated.

The New York Times reported that companies including Coca-Cola, Google and Xerox are under organized pressure to keep their distance from a GOP convention that could be very ugly – and very bad for business.

“These are Maalox months for everyone,” said Bruce Haynes, a public relations consultant at Purple Strategies, a Virginia-based bipartisan communications firm. “If this is going to look like 1968, there will be people that say, ‘That’s not where I want my product placement,’ ” he added, referring to clashes between police officers and protesters at the Democratic convention

in Chicago.

If corporate America wants to team up with sensible Republicans and divert its political dollars to more productive uses, here’s a suggestion: In Iowa, they have an opportunity to take a small but significant stand against the Republican Party’s ideological death spiral.

Until Trump came along, Iowa Rep. Steve King had done as much as anyone to paint the Republican Party as a bastion of bigotry and intolerance.

King is perhaps best known for claiming that for every undocumented immigrant who rises to become a high school valedictorian, there are 100 who have “got calves the size of cantaloupes because they’re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.”

During consideration of a proposal to allow undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children to obtain permanent legal residency by joining the military, King responded: “As soon as they raise their hand and say ‘I’m unlawfully present in the United States,’ we’re not going to take your oath into the military, but we’re going to take your deposition and we have a bus for you to Tijuana.”

Thus young people who were educat-

ed in the U.S., and want to serve what in many instances is the only country they know, learned how much their patriotism is valued by a Republican member of Congress.

King now faces a primary challenge in his very conservative district. State Sen. Rick Bertrand of Sioux City is running for King’s seat in the June primary.

Bertrand is attacking King for supporting a presidential candidate, Cruz, who opposed ethanol subsidies. But it’s pretty clear that he is opposing King’s right-wing flame throwing in general.

“I am not going in there to be a national figure,” Bertrand said. “I am going to be likable and effective.”

Agribusiness powerhouse Bruce Rastetter is among those supporting Bertrand, suggesting that, after 14 years, some Republican heavies have grown very tired of King’s act.

Throughout the Barack Obama era, Republicans in Congress have grown increasingly dysfunctional for many reasons, including the party’s transformation into a fragile shell containing mostly bad feelings and empty gestures.

But the chief political dynamic that reinforces so much bad behavior is the persistent fear among GOP officeholders

that they’re vulnerable to a primary challenge from ever-truer gradations of “true conservatives.”

If the GOP convention in Cleveland is shaping up to be a horror show, the fight in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District suggests one path out of the cul-de-sac into which Republicans have driven.

It’s just one congressional district, but if business interests and the enfeebled pro-governing wing of the party pour financial and organizing resources into the race against King, perhaps a few of his colleagues in the nihilist caucus would take notice.

After all, Republican primary challenges don’t have to come exclusively from the right.

They can come from the left, too.

For the health of the Republican Party, few developments would be as welcome as a wave of well-organized, deeply resourced campaigns initiated by conservatives who are unafraid of productive compromise and don’t feel compelled to show contempt for the government they seek to join.

This Democratic primary is starting to feel like the family reunion that should have ended weeks ago in a house full of relatives who refuse to leave.

Earlier this week, actor and progressive activist Susan Sarandon showed up for Chris Hayes’ show on MSNBC to talk about why she supports Bernie Sanders. Fine. I mean it. I was fine with that. I had already accepted that.

Thelma’s friend Louise was not going to support the first viable female candidate for president. I’m a teensy bit troubled that, for the first time, I don’t feel that pang of regret when I think of them driving off that cliff, but I’ve been hanging on to that for too long anyway.

Besides, I’ve got friends and people in my own family who are a lot likeSusan Sarandon, whom I have long admired. Like her, they go on and on about the purity of their commitment, pausing just long enough to give me an unsolicited tutorial on why my support for Hillary Clinton proves I can’t possibly be a true progressive.

Please. As I’ve mentioned before, I grew up with the Jack and Jesus wall.

GIRLS SOCCER: SYCAMORE 5, DUNDEE-CROWN 0

Spartans explode early for win

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The Sycamore girls soccer team was attacking the net early against Dundee-Crown, but all the Spartans had to show for it was a lone penalty kick goal in the first 12plus minutes.

But Ella Holland got the first Spartan goal not on a PK in the 13th minute, opening the floodgates in a 5-0 win for Sycamore in its home opener.

Carly Kresge was in front of the Dundee-Crown goal, fighting for the ball with a Charger defender. The ball squirted out and Holland ran in from out of nowhere to put the goal in.

“We found the outside cross in the middle, and that caused a lot of confusion on the defense,” Holland said.

“It just left an open spot on goal, so I just shot it.”

Five minutes later, Holland added another goal for a 3-0 lead. In the 26th minute, Kresge took the feed and ran about 30 yards past two defenders for the Chargers (1-2), putting it past goalie Taylor Gonio in a oneon-one.

The Spartans (5-1) finished the scoring spree on a one-timer from about 20 yards out from Jacquelyn Ortega with 9:35 left in the first half.

Sycamore couldn’t score in the second half, but goalie Amanda Cook and the Sycamore defense held the shutout.

“First half, a lot of things that were put on net kind of just went in,” Sycamore coach Lichamer said. “Second half, we didn’t quite have that presence shooting on goal we did the first half.”

Sycamore’s scoring started with Saydie Holland connecting on a penalty kick in the eighth minute.

The first real scoring chance for the Chargers didn’t come until the 38th minute, when Cook blocked a shot and its rebound at close proximity. They also had a couple chances in the closing five minutes but couldn’t connect.

“Every time we got a pass, our first pass was off,” Dundee-Crown coach Sebastian Falinski said. “It was either a turnover right away, or we’re diving in defensively. Lots of careless mistakes and they outworked us.”

The win was the only game of the week for the Spartans, who have a big

week next week, starting with a trip to Rockford Boylan on Monday, then the Northern Illinois Big 12 East opener at Morris, then a home game against Kaneland. Boylan, Kaneland and Sycamore were all in the same sectional last year, won by the Knights.

“We know every game has that type of meaning,” Lichamer said.

“It’s not just playing a team you play in the state tournament, or may play in the state tournament, but when your seeding those games. ... Every game matters, every score matters and we need to have a good positive result so when they’re seeding the tournament we’re getting the seed we want.”

Ella Holland said the team is positive headed into the game at the Titans.

“Boylan has a good team, but if we played like we did tonight, we’ll beat them,” she said.

Hinckley-Big Rock struggled on the offensive end Thursday – producing just two shots on goal in the second half and zero in the first half.

WATERMAN – The Indian Creek girls soccer team executed its game plan perfectly Thursday night against Hinckley-Big Rock, beating the Royals 4-0.

The Timberwolves dominated on both ends of the field while sticking to their style of play. According to Timberwolves coach Luke Anderson, Indian Creek (4-0) prefers to play the possession game that produced four goals against the Royals – Indian Creek still has not allowed a goal this season.

“We came out with good intensity,” Anderson said. “It’s always a good game against our rival Hinckley-Big Rock so our girls came out fired up. We were looking to play possession; that’s kind of our game style and also vary the attack a little bit.

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois senior gymnast Lauren Africano refused to follow the numbers to figure out if she was making the NCAA Regionals.

Last week she found out she was in for the uneven parallel bars – and she wasn’t alone.

The Huskies are bringing a school-record six gymnasts to the NCAA Regional meet starting 4 p.m.

Saturday in Tuscaloosa, which includes four qualifiers and two alternates.

“I honestly, I had no idea,” Africano said on whether she was confident she would make it. “I think that makes me nervous when I look at the scores.

I think my dad called me, and I was just like, ‘What?!’ It’s better than going alone. I think having a bigger group of us is going to make us feel more confident. The more energy we have, the better.”

Joining Africano, who has a regional qualifying score of 9.855, is junior Jamyra Carter (9.855 on bars), junior Megan Greenfield (9.825 on balance beam) and sophomore Andie Van Voorhis (9.815 on vault). Sophomore Ashley Potts (9.835 on bars) and freshman Anna Martucci (9.855 on floor) are both alternates for the Huskies.

In order to advance to the NCAA National Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, in mid-April, the Huskies gymnasts would have to take first place in the event – going up against around 30 others.

“Regionals is sort of the peak,” Northern Illinois coach Sam Morreale said. “If we can go to regionals and place, that’s what we’re chasing. If we can get a kid to sneak out – the good thing is we have more options because there’s more kids – it’s a pretty tough road to ho to get nationals, but it’s doable. It’s just super hard.”

With four of the Huskies’ qualifiers in three different events, it does mean that a pair of teammates – Africano and Carter in the bars – will both be aiming for the same goal of making it to nationals.

“Yeah, we’re competing against each other because we’re in the same event, but we support each other either way,” Carter said. “I think it makes it more fun for us that we’re fighting for the same spot.”

Last season, only Amanda Stepp made it to the regionals. With six making it this season – five of which will return next season – Morreale said the next step for the program is to qualify

as a team in 2017.

“The confidence that they can bring back from this – and hopefully when they see everything happening on the floor – they’re going to feel like they belong even though as a coach, I know they belong,” he said. “I think the team as a whole is better (this year). They’ve raised the standard of what they think is acceptable, which, in turn, allows more kids to go.”

This is the first series between the two teams since 2013, when the Huskies took two of three in DeKalb. ... While the pitching staff for the Huskies have had their problems this season, they only allowed five runs combined in the three-game series against the Bobcats. They finished with a 1.38 ERA in the series. ... Justin Fletcher (.367) is the only Northern Illinois player with a batting average above .300.

He has made 34 regular-season starts at left guard, 13 at right guard and 10 at center.

Scholarships available for students pursuing health care, nutrition careers DAILY CHRONICLE DeKALB – KishHealth System, now part of Northwestern Medicine, offers several scholarships each year for residents it serves pursuing health care studies.

Kishwaukee Hospital Auxiliary, Valley West Hospital Auxiliary, and the KishHealth System Foundation are accepting applications for their 2016-2017 scholarship opportunities.

Scholarships are offered for students pursuing careers in health care studies, including nursing, radiology, pre-med, medical and ancillary health services professions, and also those pursuing nutrition studies.

The Kishwaukee Hospital Auxiliary offers three scholarships: the Kishwaukee Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship, the Kishwaukee Hospital Auxiliary Margaret Travis Scholarship for Nutrition Studies, and the Kishwaukee Hospital Auxiliary Basic Nurse Assistant Program Scholarship.

The Kishwaukee Hospital Auxiliary offers scholarships to residents of DeKalb County who are enrolled in a college-level health-related program.

The Valley West Auxiliary offers scholarships to any student who lives in a community served by Valley West Hospital. This includes Earlville, Sandwich, Plano, Somonauk, Leland, Yorkville, Bristol, Sheridan, Serena, Newark, Millington, Millbrook, Big Rock, Hinckley and Waterman.

The student must be a high school graduate and show proof of acceptance into a post-secondary health-related program.

Application forms, transcripts and test scores must be completed and returned by June 1 for the subsequent fall semester.

Technique relieves muscle tension Dear Dr. K: A friend mentioned something called the Alexander Technique, which is supposed to help relieve tension. Can you tell me more about it?

Dear Reader: I didn’t know much about the Alexander Technique until I received your question. So I did some homework. I consulted with Dr. Eva Selhub, who is an internal medicine doctor and clinical associate at the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine.

The Alexander Technique is named for a Shakespearean actor named Frederick Matthias Alexander. In the 1890s, he set out to discover why he often lost his voice when he performed. He realized onstage, he contracted the muscles in his upper body so strongly his entire posture changed. He wondered if his voice loss could result from his disrupted posture.

His guess turned out to be correct. When he was able to release the tension in his muscles with a variety of movements, his voice loss resolved. He also was able to change his habit of contracting his neck.

These discoveries have been codified into the Alexander Technique (AT). Today, AT teaches people how to let go of tension in the body. This enables the body to move with ease and minimal effort.

AT is used to treat a variety of conditions, from musculoskeletal pain and breathing problems to voice loss and sleep disorders. Many musicians, dancers, singers and actors use AT to help enhance their performance.

You don’t have to be a performer to benefit. For example, just using your smartphone frequently can cause problems that may benefit from the technique. Here’s what I mean: Your vertebrae were designed to support your head looking straight ahead. But if you constantly look down to check your smart-

AT can teach you how hold your phone and how to position your head. Ultimately, you will learn to re-establish better posture and ease in your body.

Research supports the use of AT to help treat neck and back pain. One recent study found AT lessons led to significant reductions in neck pain over 12 months, compared with usual care. Another study found AT lessons plus exercise helped relieve chronic or recurrent back pain more effectively than standard care or massage.

If you’re interested in AT lessons, the American Society for the Alexander Technique can help you find an instructor.

In addition, many complementary and alternative medicine practices have therapists familiar with the technique. If not, they usually can route you to people in your community who can help.

Some doctors have dismissed the Alexander Technique because they label it “alternative” medicine. However, other doctors have subjected it to scientific evaluation – and found it valuable. That’s the more reasonable and constructive approach to any medical practice, when a large number of people have found it has helped them.

What should South have done?

Who had the spade queen? The clue was East’s initial pass. If he had the spade queen as well as all those heart honors, he surely would have opened the bidding. So South ruffed the fourth heart with his spade ace, then ran the spade jack through West. When the finesse worked, declarer took a second spade finesse, drew West’s last trump, and claimed.
