Illinois’ Smith hire could affect NIU POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS When I saw the University of Illinois had hired Lovie Smith as its new head football coach, my first thought was what effect, if any, it would have on the recruiting process for coach Rod Carey and Northern Illinois.

Technically, my first thought was “Huh, the Illini still have football. Good for them.”

But the second thought was about NIU recruiting.

Even in Illinois’, uh, weakened state of the past few years, the Illini managed to sign 17 three-star recruits this past signing day, while the Huskies – coming off a much stronger season that included a bowl game and a sixth straight MAC West title – inked only four three-star recruits to letters of intent.

Obviously, Illinois hasn’t had a problem coming into NIU’s backyard either, signing Dre Brown from DeKalb High School a couple of years ago.

While we’re stating obvious facts, now is as good a time as any to point out for whatever reason, Illinois just hasn’t seemed to be able to fit NIU on to its football schedule.

I think the effect, if there even is any, will

If Smith does what everyone who wears orange and blue seems to think he’s going to do, he may have some success poaching those guys. Of the six two-star prospects Illinois inked this year, none were from Illinois. NIU signed 15 two-stars, eight from Illinois.

This century, NIU has had 14 winning seasons, Illinois four. If Smith can make Illinois competitive, it will be interesting to see if the Illini start poaching some of the two-star players that have become the backbone of the Huskies’ winning ways.

SYCAMORE – Residents can vote early at five locations throughout the county, including the DeKalb Township building.

Voting equipment was delivered Feb. 26 to the DeKalb County Legislative Center, 200 N. Main St., Sycamore; DeKalb Township Building, 2323 S. Fourth St., DeKalb; Northern Illinois University Holmes Student Center, Kirkland Village Hall, 511 W. Main St., Kirkland; and the Sandwich Fire Station, 310 E. Railroad St., Sandwich.

Through Sunday, polls will be open at the same locations from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. today through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

“There should be a time frame somewhere in there, even if you’re a working person or something else,” DeKalb County Clerk and Recorder Doug Johnson said.

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Three years after the FBI conducted an all-day search of the Northern Illinois University police department, the university and law enforcement officials differ on whether the investigation continues.

In March 2013, FBI agents locked down the Police and Public Safety building on campus as part of a search believed to be focused on two NIU administrators: Eddie Williams, the former chief of operations and executive vice president of finance and facilities, and Donald Grady, the former police chief.

In an official statement released Tuesday and attributed to the university, NIU officials said the case is closed.

“After an inquiry that spanned nearly three years, federal authorities have concluded their investigation at Northern Illinois University,” the statement read. “Authorities have chosen to take no action against the institution or any individuals. The matter is now closed.

FBI agents and other peace officers took several years’ worth of records out of the police department, some related to high-profile cases, including the Antinette Keller murder investigation and rape charges against former NIU police officer Andrew Rifkin.

FBI officials said at the time that the bureau was the lead investigating

agency on the case, working with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Inspector General, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Inspector General and Illinois State Police.

FBI spokesman Garrett Coon said Tuesday that their probe continues.

“This is an ongoing criminal investigation,” Coon said. He cited a news

release the agency issued the day the search warrant was executed as the only information the FBI would provide at this time.

Matt Boerwinkle, a spokesman for the Illinois State Police, said it would be “inappropriate for the the ISP to comment on an FBI investigation.”

He referred questions about the case to the FBI. Grady’s civil attorney, Mike Fox, said he also was informed that “the FBI investigation has been dropped.” He said the same information that had been given to NIU regarding the FBI investigation also was given to his legal team.

NIU officials said they were told by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in January that the inquiry was over. Asked about the FBI’s response, spokesman Joe King said the university stood by its statement.

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The Sycamore School District 427 Board unanimously approved Tuesday the dismissal of 18 positions throughout the district.

The district is in the second year of its three-year, $3.8 million budget reduction plan, and began the school year facing a $2.3 million deficit.

Resulting from Tuesday’s vote, 12 full-time employees and six part-time employees will not be return to the district next school year.

Additionally, three employees will no longer have extended-day contracts, one full-time employee will be made part-time, and the hours for another part-time employee have been reduced.

Although the board unanimously approved the suggested 56 disKathy trictwide layoffs Feb. 23, Countryman being faced with the decision to let go of school employees has been the hardest part of the reduction plan, Board President

Jim Dombek said.

“It’s a terrible feeling. Again, it’s a place that we don’t want to be at but it’s a destination that the state has led us to,” Dombek said. “We see no other way to go forward at this point in time, unfortunately.

These people are like Jim Dombek family. They’ve been a great addition to our district.”

Each of the employees affected by the layoff could be brought back within

one year of their dismissal, Superintendent Kathy Countryman said.

The board set time aside at its Feb. 23 meeting for a public hearing about the layoffs; however, there was no public comment from the nearly 50-person crowd gathered that night.

Transportation for Sycamore High School students enrolled in “zero hour” courses, or classes that start before the regular school day, could also be eliminated, and a new teacher mentoring program is at the risk of being cut.

Cuts to the district’s classified staff will be announced April 12.

Potential new labor rules cause headache for library officials

bkeeperman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – New changes to federal labor laws are causing headaches for library officials as they put together an operating budget while balancing overtime pay.

The U.S. Department of Labor has issued a proposal to increase how much an employee’s base salary must be in order for a company not to pay those exempt employees for overtime hours worked. The Department of Labor is expected to release a final ruling in July, which means officials must determine how to work the proposed changes into upcoming budgets.

DeKalb Public Library’s finance committee met Tuesday to discuss the proposed impact of the changes on budget decisions.

The DeKalb Public Library has 10 overtime exempt staff members and eight nonexempt, full-time workers.

The library has total expenses of $2.6 million in its 2015-16 budget, with $1.4 million of those expenses coming from payroll. The library’s board of trustees will meet at 6 p.m. today at the DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St. The finance committee will most likely recommend a hiring freeze, no raises for part-time employees and moving as many full-time employees to an exempt-level salary as possible, Coover said.

“It’s a thorny issue nationally,” she said.

Board President Virginia Cassidy said it was a tough problem, but the bottom line was that the budget needed to be balanced to pass.

“We have to make hard decisions here,” she said. “Because we don’t have the money to do everything.”

LOCAL BRIEFS Sycamore officer, driver taken to hospital after crash

SYCAMORE – A Sycamore police officer and a Sycamore woman both were taken to the hospital Tuesday after their vehicles collided at the intersection of Spartan Trail and DeKalb Avenue.

According to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at 11:11 a.m., when a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Sue E. Scott, 72, of the 600 block of Windsor Drive in Sycamore, was hit by a Sycamore police vehicle driven by officer Johnathon S. Miller, 31.

Miller had activated the lights and siren on his 2014 Ford Explorer to pursue a driver on DeKalb Avenue and went through a red light at the intersection. Scott had a green light at the intersection and was crossing DeKalb Avenue when her vehicle was hit on the driver’s side by the police vehicle.

Both were transported to Kishwaukee Hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening, Sycamore Police Chief Glenn Theriault said.

Scott was released from the hospital,

MALTA – Friday will be the last day for more than two dozen Kishwaukee College employees, after trustees voted unanimously to approve a layoff plan to help the college plug an anticipated budget shortfall.

“It’s a sad day,” said Robert Johnson, chairman of the board of trustees, after all eight trustees said yes Tuesday to the reduction plan. “It’s an unfortunate occurrence. I don’t think anything like this has ever happened at Kishwaukee College.”

The college announced last month that it planned to cut its work force for fiscal 2017 – which starts July 1 – because of declining enrollment and because the college only expects to receive half of the state aid it previously budgeted for.

College President Laurie Borowicz presented at the February board meeting a budget plan for fiscal 2017 that included a $3.8 million deficit. That includes a 50 percent reduction in general state aid, to $2.5 million. The college has not received any of the $5 million it expected in state aid payments this fiscal year.

College spokeswoman Kayte Hamel said the layoffs would be effective Friday, but the 24 people affected would continue to get paychecks through June 30. The move, she said, was part of the commitment the college made last fall to not have job losses before the end of fiscal 2016.

The college expects to save $1 million with the layoffs and $1.1 million with not filling other vacant positions.

The austerity plan also calls for working to increase revenues by $1.2 million, said Borowicz.

She told trustees at the February meeting that the college had projected a 6.5 percent decrease in enrollment this school year, but actually experienced an 8.8 percent one. That translated to a $275,000 loss in tuition and fees revenue.

Borowicz, who started in January, said the community college has already dipped into its savings, spending $4.4 million of the $6 million it had at the start of the fiscal year.

“It’s too bad the folks we sent to Springfield can’t figure out how to manage the state’s finances,” Johnson said.

A: Zsolnay Pecs is part of the mark for a Hungarian pottery started in 1853.The Art Nouveau pieces, often with three-dimensional women clinging to the sides of a vase, were made in the 1900s until about 1930. These were very out-of-favor with American collectors in the 1930s to 1960s and then slowly gained in price. Today a figural vase can bring thousands of dollars. A large, less elaborate piece as early as yours also will sell for thousands. In the 1980s, a series of restaurant chains started decorating with old advertising signs, figures, bottles, and boxes to promote the idea of old-time menus and traditional food favorites.

There were already serious advertising collectors searching for signs that pictured authentic examples of past lifestyles, choices of merchandise and printing technology. Metal signs were the most expensive. A method of printing on tin was developed in 1876.

One popular but rare sign is the 16-1/2 by 10-inch Egg-O-See cereal self-framed, lithographed tin sign. Egg-O-See was a processed wheat cereal created in 1906 that was well-advertised. The sign pictures a boy in overalls eating at a Mission oak breakfast table in an up-to-date 1910 room. There is a potted fern on the windowsill of a leaded glass window. On the table is a blue-green box of cereal, a glass sugar bowl and a glass of milk. With the boy are his dog and two cats hoping for some scraps. The slogan on the frame reads “Dere aint go’n’er be no leavin’s.” Four of these signs sold for announced prices at large auctions between 2007 and 2015.

All were excellent condition with only a few flaws in the paint or a slight dent. The earliest sold for $664, and five years later, another brought $750. Then a year later one sold for $950, and last year, $2,250. Great advertising signs have been going up in price, but only when the graphics are great and the condition is excellent. *** Q: I have a table that was passed on to me by an aunt. It is 27 inches high and has three tiers, a round one in the center and two lower ones on either side.

The table has four legs, flared, under a harp pedestal. There is a mark stamped on the bottom, a triangle within a triangle and the name Mersman. Can you tell me how old this table is and what it is worth?

A: J.B. Mersman owned sawmills in northeastern Indiana, moved to northwest Ohio in 1876, and began to make tables. By 1900 he had opened a factory in Celina, Ohio, and was making dining and library tables and beds. Mersman turned the company over to two of his sons and by 1927, after a

Rauner: ‘Outrageous’ House is off until April

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner admonished Democratic Speaker Michael Madigan on Tuesday over the House calendar, calling it “outrageous” that legislators in the chamber aren’t due to return until April 4 despite an Illinois budget stalemate now in its ninth month.

Rauner’s tongue-lashing of Madigan is the second in as many weeks as both state leaders continue an epic standoff over a budget that should’ve taken effect July 1 and neither man is budging. Rauner wants pro-business, union-weakening legislation he argues will attract more business to the state, while Madigan has described the governor’s Michael proposals as extreme at- Madigan tacks on the middle class.

Rauner on Tuesday repeatedly characterized the House’s leave from the statehouse as a vacation.

“It’s wrong, they should get back here and do their jobs,” he told reporters in his office at the Capitol.

Madigan spokesman Steve Brown said the schedule was posted long ago and that Rauner had mischaracterized it as a vacation. He also criticized Rauner for spending Monday campaigning for Illinois Republican U.S. Rep. John Shimkus.

“Apparently he woke up, I guess this morning, because yesterday he was out campaigning, woke up this morning and looked at the legislative schedule that’s been published for three or four months

and decided to come out and make a lot of baseless comments,” Brown said.

While the House is off, the Senate is in session for three days this week.

Rauner said the House not being in session highlights a “stunning failure on the part of Speaker Madigan and his caucus in the House.”

The back-and-forth sniping underscores how the acrimony between Rauner and Madigan has only grown in the weeks before high-stakes legislative primaries on March 15. Madigan is among the legislators facing a challenge.

Last week, Rauner accused Madigan of playing political games instead of working with Republicans to pass legislation to fund higher-education institutions and social service programs that have suffered during the budget impasse.

Those comments came before Madigan and his House colleagues passed two pieces of legislation that together would earmark $3.7 billion for colleges, tuition assistance for low-income students and fund various human service programs.

Democrats labeled their idea a compromise – to the annoyance of Republicans who said they weren’t consulted – because it includes forgiving the repayment of $454 million in special state funds. Democrats point out the governor is on board with that to help fund colleges.

But the governor’s office said the two bills Democrats passed are linked and will put Illinois further in debt because the state is currently spending at a deficit without a budget. It’s unclear when the Senate will take up the legislation, but Rauner already has indicated he intends to veto the plan.

Man charged in 9-year-old boy’s shooting death

CHICAGO – A Chicago man initially planned to cut the fingers and ears off the 9-year-old son of a member of a rival gang but ended up luring the boy into an alley with the promise of a juice box and shooting him dead, authorities said Tuesday.

Dwright Boone-Doty, 22, was charged Monday in the Nov. 2 killing of Tyshawn Lee. He has been jailed since a November arrest on Dwright unrelated gun charges.

Boone-Doty Prosecutors also charged him with shooting two people about two weeks earlier, including a 19-yearold woman who died from her wounds.

Authorities said revenge also was the motive in that attack, which the 20-yearold male victim survived.

Tyshawn Lee was one of 400 homicide victims in Chicago last year, but the fourth-grader’s death shocked the city because, according to police, he was killed for no other reason than to punish his father.

Lawmakers seek to expand concealed carry law

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois legislators from both parties are continuing to fine-tune the state’s concealed carry law nearly three years after it was passed.

Legislators have proposed including public transportation, courthouses, interstate highway rest areas, public parks and athletic facilities as areas in which permit holders are allowed to carry a concealed weapon, the State Journal-Register reported.

In July 2013, Illinois became the last state to pass a concealed carry law.

Since then, there have been some changes to the law, but none regarding the areas where concealed carry is allowed.

GOP group: Tweet about Duckworth was a mistake

CHICAGO – The National Republican Senatorial Committee briefly posted a tweet Tuesday that said a Democratic candidate from Illinois who lost both legs

as an Army helicopter pilot “has a sad record of not standing up” for veterans.

NRSC spokeswoman Andrea Bozek acknowledged the tweet about U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth was a mistake that was deleted “within minutes.”

“It would be great if reporters would pay as much attention to a deleted tweet as they should” to other issues in the race, she added in an emailed statement.

The tweet was recirculated on social media and appeared on political blogs.

Duckworth’s campaign noted it as a “disgraceful attack” in an afternoon email soliciting campaign donations.

Bill Clinton campaigns for wife in Chicago suburb

EVANSTON – Former President Bill Clinton is recalling fond memories of meeting his wife over four decades ago and said the now-Democratic presidential front-runner is the “change-maker” the nation needs.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Clinton spoke to a crowd of hundreds on Tuesday in the Chicago suburb of Evanston. He said he first met Hillary Clinton 45 years ago this month and was “just blown away” by her sense of what was needed to get things done.

He said the country is full of instability and uncertainty, from climate change to racism, and the most important reason to vote for her is that the country can’t wait any longer.

The newspaper reported that earlier Tuesday he stopped at a Chicago soul food cafe with U.S. Rep. Danny Davis.

City firefighters rescue 1 from flea market blaze

CHICAGO – Fire officials fighting a massive blaze at a two-blocklong flea market building in Chicago said they rescued one person as the fire belched large plumes of black smoke into the sky.

The Chicago Fire Department said there were no reports of injuries in the fire that broke out just before 10 a.m.

Tuesday at Buyer’s Flea Market on the West Side. Fire officials said they believe no one else was trapped inside.

About two hours after the fire started, fire officials recalled firefighters from the building. Fire officials said there were many vehicles and flammable items inside the building.

Fire officials said vehicles parked on the building’s deck fell into the building as the roof collapsed.

Clinton, Trump still dominating primaries

LANSING, Mich. – Republican front-runner Donald Trump swept to victory in the Mississippi and Michigan presidential primaries Tuesday, deepening his grip on the GOP nominating contest despite fierce efforts to block his path. Democrat Hillary Clinton easily carried Mississippi but was locked in a close race with rival Bernie Sanders in Michigan.

The primaries offered Trump and Clinton a chance to pad their leads and start turning toward the general election. But Sanders was hoping to prevent a Clinton coronation with a strong showing in Michigan, the night’s biggest prize and the first Midwestern industrial state to vote in the 2016 race.

With votes in Michigan still being counted, Clinton glossed over the race with Sanders and jabbed at the Republicans and their chaotic nomination fight.

“Every time you think it can’t get any uglier, they find a way,” she said. “As the rhetoric keeps sinking lower, the stakes in this election keep rising.”

Trump, too, turned an eye toward the Democrats and November, emphasizing the importance of helping Republican senators and House members get elected in the fall. Having entered Tuesday’s contests facing a barrage of criticism from rival candidates and outside groups, he reveled in overcoming the attacks.

“Every single person who has attacked me

has gone down,” Trump said at one of his Florida resorts. In his typically unorthodox style, the billionaire was flanked by tables packed with his retail products, including steaks, bottled water and wine.

While a handful of recent losses to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz have raised questions about Trump’s durability, Tuesday’s contests marked another lost opportunity for rivals to slow his momentum. Next week’s winner-take-all primaries in Ohio and Florida loom especially large as perhaps the last chance to stop him short of a longshot contested convention fight.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich was in a fight for second place in Michigan and hoping a good showing would give him a boost heading into next week’s crucial contest in his home state.

For Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a favorite of Republican elected officials, Tuesday marked the latest in a series of disappointing nights. He emerged from Michigan and Mississippi with no delegates. Rubio insisted he would press on to his home state’s primary in Florida.

“It has to happen here, and it has to happen now,” Rubio told supporters Tuesday during a rally in Sarasota.

If Rubio and Kasich can’t win at home, the GOP primary appears set to become a two-person race between Trump and Cruz. The Texas senator is sticking close to Trump in the delegate count and with six states in his win column, he’s argued he’s the only candidate standing between the brash billionaire and the GOP nomination.

More transparency needed at DeKalb Park District When it comes to personnel issues, there’s not a lot that most employers – local governments included – can say.

But when a local park district with an annual budget of $8 million decides to put its executive director on leave, someone ought to at least mention it to the public.

No one from the DeKalb Park District board seemed to deem that necessary, however, when they decided to relieve Executive Director Jason Mangum of his duties. No one has been appointed to lead the district’s office in his place, but not to worry – things are running themselves, officials said.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

Mangum, who started working with the park district in June 2014 with a two-year contract that included a starting salary of $116,000, has been on paid administrative leave since a Feb. 24 park board meeting.

Mangum, whose contract is set to expire in May, was cagey when first asked about his status after that meeting, saying in an email that the board was trying to decide whether it would offer him another contract, not mentioning that he wouldn’t be at work for the time being.

Park board members said nothing to the community. Mangum’s voicemail at the park district office made

no mention that he was on leave. Nor did the park district’s website.

When he was reached, park board Chairman Phil Young said the board had reached a consensus to put Mangum on leave without taking a vote and that there would be more specifics ready at the board’s meeting March 17.

The public has a right to expect more transparency. At a minimum, they have a right to expect the elected park board members to tell them what’s happening and what the park district plans to do going forward.

The district’s two latest budgets have included deficits of $1 million or more, but we have no way of know-

ing for sure if that has anything to do with this situation, which could be due to any number of factors. It’s somewhat concerning, however, that Mangum was hired by many of these same board members, with the help of a search firm and already might be cycling out two years later.

There is often some mystery that surrounds issues between employees and employers. However, if there is a plan for how the park district plans to move forward, the public has yet to hear it.

We hope for more clarity on the path forward from the board at its March 17 meeting.

But it can be argued that Trump is less the cause than an inevitable effect of the party’s looming disintegration. It can be argued that what’s really destroying the Republican Party is the Republican Party.

The popular storyline goes that voters are seeking political outsiders this year in their frustration over a government where the legislative gears are frozen and nothing gets done. What that storyline forgets is that this gridlock was by design, that GOP leaders held a meeting on the very evening of the president’s first inauguration and explicitly decided upon a policy of non-cooperation to deny him anything approaching a bipartisan triumph.

The party followed this tactic with such lockstep discipline and cynical disregard for the national

welfare that in 2010, seven Republican co-sponsors of a resolution to create a deficit reduction task force voted against their own bill because Obama came out for it. They feared its passage might make him look good.

In the book quoted above, Michael Grunwald distilled the GOP’s thinking as follows: “As long as Republicans refused to follow his lead, Americans would see partisan food fights and conclude that Obama had failed to produce change.”

Republicans and their media accomplices buttressed that strategy with a campaign of insult and disrespect designed to delegitimize Obama. With their endless birther stupidity, their death panels idiocy, their constant budget brinksmanship and their cries of, “I want my country back!” they stoked in the public nothing less than hatred for the interloper in the White House who’d had the nerve to be elected president.

And the strategy worked, hobbling and frustrating Obama. But as a bullet doesn’t care who it hits and a fire doesn’t care who it burns, the forces of ignorance and unreason, grievance and fear the Repub-

licans calculatedly unleashed have not only wounded the president.

No, it becomes more apparent every day that those forces have gravely wounded politics itself, meaning the idea that we can – or even should – reason together, compromise, form consensus.

There is a sense of just deserts in watching panicked Republicans try to stop Trump as he goosesteps toward coronation, but it is tempered by the realization that there’s far more at stake here than the GOP’s comeuppance.

This is our country we’re talking about. This is its future we choose in November. And any future presided over by “President Trump” is too apocalyptic to contemplate. Yet, the possibility is there, and that’s sobering.

It is bad enough the Republicans may have destroyed themselves.

One wonders whether they will take America with them.

Last word needed in Springfield war of words If you believe that words and the tone of political rhetoric matter, then you might have a few words for how politics played out last week, both at the state and presidential level.

Disappointing. Discouraging.

Frustrating. Just plain sad.

At the state level, while legislators engaged in “Groundhog Day” levels of inaction, their leaders and Gov. Bruce Rauner instead ratcheted up the rhetoric yet again.

Just 2 1/2 weeks ago, Rauner stood before the General Assembly and declared, “I stand before you today with respect for our co-equal branches of government ... and a deeply-rooted desire to work with each and every one of you to right our ship of state.”

By last Monday, his frustration had boiled into a press conference that left many scratching their heads about his strategy for doing that.

Rauner and Speaker Mike Madigan have left no doubt they’re at war, and the governor took to the press to

complain that the speaker is delaying a deal to help higher education so that he can use it as a campaign issue. But this time, the governor also doubled down on Senate President John Cullerton, despite apparent previous efforts by the two to compromise.

“You know what President Cullerton said to me in private? He said, ‘Bruce, I’ve lived in Mike’s shadow for 37 years. I’m not gonna step out now,’ “ Rauner told reporters. “Can you believe that? Can you believe that? You wonder why Illinois is in such deep yogurt, ladies and gentlemen.”

Even in the business world from which Rauner comes, it’s hard to fathom the idea that belittling your rival by revealing an unflattering comment – allegedly said in what was, by the governor’s own description, a private meeting – is smart negotiating strategy. Trust? If Cullerton had a shred of it for the governor before, it’s blown out of the water

now.

Not that Madigan’s team, who sees the governor as bearing sole responsibility for the higher education debacle, has been a model of restraint and reason, either. Among the choice reaction quotes from Madigan spokesman Steve Brown were observations that the governor is “a little wobbly” and “a little more irrational than usual.”

Meanwhile, lawmakers went through another round of passing a bill that Rauner would veto, having the governor veto it and then unsuccessfully trying for an override that Madigan knew he didn’t have the votes for, in order to stake out political positions. And now, the House has adjourned until April.

Perhaps the most optimistic thing that could be said about Illinois’ political rhetoric at this point is that it’s still more genteel than the war of words between Donald Trump, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz.

But none of this back and forth

inspires any confidence that the state’s top leaders are sincere when they talk about finding compromise, or bemoan the collateral wreckage their actions are creating. That’s a disturbing thought.

The voices that deserve to be heard are those of the students wondering if they’ll have to drop out of college, the workers worried about whether they’ll be laid off because of the state’s crisis, the social service providers who care for the elderly and vulnerable, and the business owners worried about the economy and added uncertainty created by the impasse.

Hopefully, those people will talk loudly and clearly to their local representatives, and those rank-and-file members will come back to Springfield with the one message that needs to be delivered to those at the top: Enough.

The situation is so objectively and transparently grim that many on the right no longer even bother to spin it.

The Sycamore team qualified for state last year, and getting back there next year already is a strong motivating factor for Kolberg.

“There’s definitely the fire to qualify,” Kolberg said. “I’d like to go out with that bang for my senior year. I think that would be awesome. It’s definitely one of the goals I’ll have next year.”

Hampton said he expects a Kolberg-led turnaround next season.

“The fact we didn’t go to state this

year is, I think, a disappointment,” Hampton said. “In her role as a leader next year, she’s going to want to take that next group to that next level. I think sectionals is probably the minimal of what she’s going to be looking for.”

Even though the team fell short of making state, Kolberg said she still was pleased with the way the season went for the Spartans.

“We kept finishing higher and higher in our tournaments, we won our conference tournament, five or six of our girls were all-conference and we won the regional,” Kolberg said. “So I think we had a great season, granted we did not make state.”

Kaneland expects another stern test

kdruley@shawmedia.com Six years and 26 days ago, Joe Conroy guided the Woodstock North boys basketball team to the first win in school history, a one-point home victory late in the program’s inaugural season.

Although Conroy coaches Kaneland now, he had occasion to mention the Thunder’s gym during a practice this past weekend.

“He says he wants to win there again,” Knights senior Ryan David said.

The Knights (20-8) will get their chance in tonight’s Class 3A Woodstock North Sectional semifinal against 29-2 Rockford Boylan, whose season résumé includes wins against a pair of 4A regional champions.

Unseating the Titans might appear daunting on paper, but the Knights aren’t worried. Their coach’s recent lesson is about the only history that concerns them.

Boylan handled another school from Conroy’s old Woodstock stomping grounds, Marian Central, to win the Freeport Regional championship Friday. On the same night the Titans rolled, 77-58, host Kaneland edged Northern Illinois Big 12 East rival Sycamore, 44-40, to advance to the sectional.

Bradley thrives, but rest of freshmen struggle

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois freshman Levi Bradley walked to the freethrow line in a one-possession game twice in the final 20 seconds.

He sank both free throws each time.

Although Bradley was magnificent in his first Mid-American Conference tournament game, the rest of the Huskies’ highly praised freshman class struggled in the 56-50 win over Western Michigan on Monday.

The Huskies improved to 21-11 on the season, tied for the second most wins in a season for an NIU men’s basketball team with the 1971-72 squad.

Marshawn Wilson, who was named to the MAC all-freshman team earlier in the day Monday, finished with three points and was 1 for 9 from the floor.

Backup point guard Laytwan Porter, who has provided strong play off the bench all season, had four turnovers and was 1-for-5 shooting. Starting

center Jaylen Key struggled with foul trouble in the second half and had two points and two rebounds in 17 minutes before fouling out.

“We have a young team. The freshmen are in uncharted waters,” NIU coach Mark Montgomery said. “Their high school season would be over by now. The games aren’t as intense. We’ve had over 100-and-some practices and you have to bring it in practice Levi Bradley every day.”

However, the one-game sample size can be misleading. Are the freshmen wearing down? Were they buckling under the pressure of the MAC tournament? Or is it nothing?

In the final two regular-season games, Wilson averaged 19.5 points and was shooting 8 for 11 (73 percent) from 3-point range. In the final three games of the regular season, Porter averaged 6.7 points, 2.7 assists and only

1.3 turnovers in 17 minutes.

Key also was strong in the final two games, averaging 8.5 points and five rebounds in 23.5 minutes. The trouble the left-handed Key ran into was picking up two quick fouls in the first two minutes of the second half.

Bradley was the only one of the four talented freshmen to play a strong game against the Broncos, scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in 23 minutes – including going 4 for 4 from the line in the final seconds.

“Just knock it down,” Bradley said of his thought process at the line. “I practice free throws every day. It’s a big part of our practice, so I just did it like in practice.”

However, Montgomery admitted after the win over Western Michigan that he’s seen his freshmen wear down lately.

“I’ve seen it at times, so I try to shorten practices, try to make film a little shorter and keep those guys fresh,” he said. “When you go from

high school ball where every possession doesn’t really matter to here, where every possession matters, you can’t give up a back-door, you can’t fall asleep on a baseline out-of-bounds play, you have to be alert, down in a stance and figuring things out. I think our guys have done a good job. Once we don’t, we’ll probably be going home and figuring out another postseason tournament.”

Montgomery, who already said the Huskies have invitations to the CIT, CBI and inaugural Vegas 16, have a group of freshmen that has played so much basketball during its high school days. This is a group that toured the country as part of the Milwaukee United – at least, Wilson, Bradley and Key. More than likely, expect the freshmen to bounce back from a tough performance against Western Michigan.

Bradley said he doesn’t expect the Huskies to stop winning anytime soon.

“We have bigger things in mind than 21 wins,” Bradley said.

Arrieta, who is eligible to become a free agent after next season, approached his representatives last season, urging them to get a multiyear deal done because of his strong desire to stay in Chicago, where his career began to thrive, a source close to Arrieta said.

He’s 36-13 with a 2.26 ERA in 67 starts since joining the Cubs. He was 20-25 with a 5.46 ERA in 69 games (63 starts) for Baltimore before that.

“There’s a small window that you have as a professional athlete, and obviously you want to try to capitalize on that,” said Arrieta, who will make his first start of the spring today. “Money can only make you so happy. And we’re extremely happy where we’re at.

I love my teammates, love Chicago. So those are more important than a contract extension for me.”

Arrieta’s value almost certainly never will be higher than it is right now. Some of the greatest pitchers in history have not produced the kind of dominance he did much of last year (161, 0.86 ERA, in his final 20 starts). And he turned 30 on Sunday.

The length of the contract he’s seeking is said to be the biggest obstacle to clear between the sides.

One source with knowledge of the team’s position in negotiations questioned whether the front office has the ability to make another nine-figure contract fit projected budgets after signing Jon Lester (six years, $155 million) and Jason Heyward (eight years, $184 million) the past two offseasons.

“The money’s not on my mind at all,” Arrieta said. “If it comes up, if the front office wants to talk, then I’m here. We can sit down again and try to work something out.

“But it’s got to be something worth signing. I think Theo knows that. I think that’s why we haven’t had a ton of conversations about it.”

MESA, Ariz. – The Cubs and Jake Arrieta likely will open the season without a multiyear contract extension for the National League’s reigning Cy Young Award winner, but it’s not for lack of face time between the pitcher and the team’s top baseball executive.

“Theo (Epstein) and I talked not so recently, and then we had a conversation a little bit more recently,” said Arrieta, who avoided arbitration with a one-year agreement for $10.7 million this month before resuming conversations about a potential longer-term deal.

“I think we’re kind of on the same page with Jake Arrieta not wanting to have a ton of conversation as the season gets near because the 24 guys in here are more important than my contract,” Arrieta said. “I think they kind of know the ballpark of where it needs to be.

“Whether it happens or not we’ll see. And I think both sides don’t want to deal with much of this during the season.”

Team president Epstein downplayed the newsworthiness of the talks – which sources said the team diddn’t expect to result in an agreement – and characterized those conversations since being together in Arizona as more about broad concepts than substantive details.

“Maybe the talks will provide a foundation for something to get done down the road,” Epstein said. “The last thing he wants or we would want is to create any type of distraction. There will be quiet moments out of the competitive spotlight in the future where it’ll make sense to talk again. But it’s certainly not something that’s going on now.”

As Arrieta closed in on a 22-6 season that included a 1.77 ERA, his agent, Scott Boras, compared him to another client: Max Scherzer, who got a then-record seven-year, $210 million deal from the Washington Nationals. Boras emphasized relatively low miles and high durability expectations for Arrieta.

Two days later, Arrieta threw a no-hitter.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Austin Jackson’s signing added depth to the White Sox’s outfield. Avisail Garcia made a strong pitch not to be the odd man out Tuesday.

Garcia had three hits, including his first spring home run, and Adam Eaton went 3 for 4 as the Sox pounded the Milwaukee Brewers, 10-6. Jimmy Rollins also homered and had three hits.

May is grateful and blessed to have survived a scary collision in the outfield with shortstop Tim Anderson, the organization’s top position-player prospect (and his roommate at the time) while playing for Double-A Birmingham last summer. A concussion shelved him for six weeks, and he doesn’t remember the crash.

“It was a freak accident,” said May, who had opened the season with a .311 batting average and 25 stolen bases in 52 games. His numbers flattened out when he returned, not a shocking development considering the severity of the injury, and he finished with a .275 average, .329 on base percentage and 37 stolen bases.

The Sox, who haven’t drafted and

developed nearly enough position players to stock their major league roster for years, need prospects like May – who likely will start the season at Triple-A Charlotte – to pan out. They’ve filled his position like every other, trading for Adam Eaton and, most recently, signing Austin Jackson to a one-year, $5 million contract. Bullish on his skill and feel for the game, they think they might have a keeper in May. “This kid knows how to play the game,” Sox director of player development Nick Capra said. “He’s a real good defender with good range and a good arm. He has a chance to be a table setter with on-base potential. He bunts well and is a threat on the bases.”

He has looked good in Arizona, making two starts in center and going 3 for 8 with two doubles, two RBIs and two stolen bases in two attempts.

May, 24, who was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, home of the Little League World Series, was raised to be a ballplayer.

“Growing up I was always in dugouts and clubhouses with my dad as he coached,” he said. “I was always blessed to be around the game.

“He pushed me to work hard, estab-

lished my work ethic and that nothing is going to come easy to you.

“The White Sox have done a great job establishing my foundation to utilize my speed. They do a great job to make sure we’re always thinking the game. We’re always learning, growing. You never stop growing in this game, or in life.”

With center fielder Adam Eaton restricted to designated hitter as he builds strength in his throwing shoulder, May got a second start in center field with the Sox regulars Sunday.

Batting left-handed, he laid down a sacrifice bunt and lined a double down the left-field line to drive in two runs.

Then he stole third base.

“He’s got a lot of tools, and one of the biggest things is he’s not afraid,” manager Robin Ventura said. “He’s stealing bases, smart, heady player, puts the bat on the ball, runs the bases well.”

May is more of a small-ball guy than his kin, but the Sox probably can find a place on their roster for an outfielder who can cover gaps, handle the bat and run.

“They were bigger guys, had some thunder,” May said. “We all bring our own type of game. My dad, he had some wheels. I’m a little hybrid of those guys. Everyone has their own talents.”

GLENDALE, Ariz. – If anyone was born to play baseball, it’s Jacob May. May’s father, Lee May Jr., was a Mets first-round draft pick who never made it to the majors but stayed in professional baseball as a coach. His grandfather, Lee May, hit 354 major league homers. And May’s uncle Carlos has a White Sox pedigree – a two-time All-Star on those good red-striped Jacob May Sox teams starring Dick Allen and managed by Chuck Tanner during the early 1970s.

“Any time you’re around someone who has been in the game, you soak it all in,” May said. “Even the little things you’re comprehending.”

A third-round draft pick out of Coastal Carolina in 2013, May doesn’t carry himself like a privileged prospect. He knows his dad was expected to make it to the majors but came up short. He knows baseball is tough to master.

“I’m grateful and blessed to be here,” May said.

Simple hacks for leaner, tastier beef roast

In the world of beef roasts, marbling is king. The internal automatic basting power of tiny fat pockets melting into the meat is amazing.

So what are the options for roasting healthier, leaner cuts of meat? There’s the pork tenderloin, which is the leanest choice. But it is so mild in flavor it sometimes doesn’t quite scratch the roast beefy itch. There’s beef tenderloin, which also is super lean and a mighty tasty roast. But I can only imagine a world where I could justify spending over $100 on my family’s dinner on a regular basis.

So for our usual Sunday supper, I turn to the top round or bottom round roasts, which are inexpensive and lean. But they do require a little extra care to compete with the flavor and texture of fattier cuts closer to the center of the cow.

After years of practice, I have a few tips: • If you can dry age the roast for a couple of days in the refrigerator, the taste will be intensified and mimic higher quality cuts. Just pat the meat dry, sprinkle on some seasoning salt (or salt and pepper) and let it sit, uncovered, in the refrigerator.

• Let the roast sit at room temperature for an hour before cooking.

• Use a three-phase cooking method. First, brown the roast on all sides in a large Dutch oven to create a tasty crust. Second, slow-roast at a low temp (250 degrees F.) until the internal temperature is about 10 degrees below your final liking (120 degrees F. for a final temp of 130 degrees F., about medium-rare). Remove the roast, and raise the oven temperature to 475 degrees F. and finish the roast with a blast of heat for 10 minutes.

• Tent the roast and let it rest for 10 to 20 minutes before slicing thinly. Pour a little juice over those slices, and you are in (thrifty, healthy) beefy nirvana.

Lean Roast Beef With Marsala Gravy Start to finish: 2½ hours (30 minutes active) Servings: 6

2½- to 3-pound top or bottom round beef roast 2 teaspoons garlic powder 2 teaspoons seasoning salt (such as Lawry’s Seasoned Salt) ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper 1 tablespoon vegetable oil ½ cup beef stock, divided ½ cup dry Marsala wine, divided 1 teaspoon cornstarch Use paper towels to pat the roast dry. In a small bowl, mix the garlic powder, seasoning salt and pepper, then rub the mixture all over the roast. Let sit at room temperature for 1 hour.

Heat oven to 250 degrees F. Heat a heavy-bottomed skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high. Rub the oil over the roast, then set into the pan and sear on all sides until a crust is formed, about 15 minutes total. Transfer the roast to a rack fitted in a roasting pan.

Return the pan to the heat and pour in ½ cup of water.

the pan is deglazed and any bits on the bottom are loosened.

Pour the liquid into the roasting pan. Add half of the beef stock and marsala wine to the roasting pan. Set the roast in the oven and cook until it reaches 120 degrees F. to 125 degrees F. at the center, depending on desired finished temperature (which will be 10 degrees higher), about 1½ hours.

Remove the pan from the oven and increase the heat to 475 degrees F. Once the temperature has been reached, place the roast back in the oven and cook until the top is nice and crusty, about 10 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven, transfer the roast to a carving board, cover it loosely with foil and let

it rest while you make the gravy.

To make the gravy, place the roasting pan over medium heat on the stovetop. Add the remaining wine and stock, then whisk to release any stuck bits on the pan. In a small glass, mix the cornstarch with ¼ cup of water, then add to the pan. Simmer, stirring constantly, until slightly thickened.

Slice the roast and serve with the gravy.

Season the pork with the salt and pepper, then add the pork to the skillet and sear on all sides until very well browned, with a nice outer crust, about 15 minutes in all. After 10 minutes, add the garlic cloves, turning them every once in a while so that they brown on all sides as well.

Transfer the pork, fatty side up, to a 7- to 8-quart slow cooker. Return the skillet to high heat. Add 1 cup of broth and bring to a simmer, scraping the bottom of the pan to release any stuck bits. When the skillet bottom looks clean, pour the liquid over the pork, then add another 2 cups of broth to the slow cooker.

Cook for 5½ to 6 hours on high or 9 to 10 hours on low, or until the pork starts to fall apart when prodded with a fork. It should reach at least 170 degrees F. Let the pork rest for 20 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to scoop out the garlic cloves, then squeeze them out of the papers into the liquid. Transfer the pork to a large bowl or large cutting board, then use 2 forks to pull apart the meat intro shreds. Moisten the meat with the juices in the slow cooker (use as much or as little as you like). Mix well to moisten and flavor the meat with the juices.

Once upon a time (like, yesterday) I had a hefty hunk of pork, no time and no specific thing I wanted to make.

But even with so little going for me, and so little inspiration, I did know one thing: A container of homemade shredded pork in the refrigerator means there will be dinner later in the week and that my future frazzled self will look back on my current frazzled self and be grateful.

So I seared the pork, tossed in some garlic and chicken broth, and tossed the whole thing into the slow cooker for a while. For very little handson effort, I was richly rewarded. A delicious, tender, falling apart pork bathed in an equally delicious sauce.

And it took just six ingredients – a number that includes the salt and pepper.

If you want a bit more flavor, you can throw in some branches of fresh oregano or other herbs when you add the chicken broth. A diced onion or can of diced tomatoes would be delightful, too. But they are hardly essential.

Now, what to do with this pork?

Pile it high on buns for a pulled pork sandwich (and if you need more flavor, a squirt of any kind of barbecue sauce – Texas-style, Memphis-style, North-Carolina style, your choice – will tie it all together). Or go Asian by mixing in a bit of hoisin sauce and serve in lettuce wraps with some fresh ginger, mint and shredded carrot. It also would be great added to a stir-fry.

Or do the taco or enchilada thing, or add it to a lasagna or some manicotti.

The options last as long as the pork does.

People threatening to pick up and leave if they don’t like the outcome of an election isn’t a new phenomenon in DeKalb County.

The front page headline reads “The Chronicle man as he started west the morning after the election.” A bit farther down, this headline appears “The Chronicle man, friendless, penniless and facing a $250,000 libel suit, will move west.” It seems that, as have many others before and after, the Chronicle man was upset with the outcome of the election and had vowed to pack up and leave.

“They bought the whistle, now let them blow it,” the paper said.

The Chronicle, then run by proprietor J.F. Glidden and editor Clinton Rosette, was “Democratic in all things and under all circumstances.” The True Republican in Sycamore had some pun-filled barbs directed at the DeKalb paper on the front page of its Nov. 5 edition.

Of course, Glidden and Rosette stayed and the Chronicle went on. And threats of packing up and leaving have remained a staple of political banter.

This year, with Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump seeking the nomination of their respective parties, is no different.

Over the years, the Chronicle has recorded the results of many DeKalb County elections. For many years, the newspaper would rent the Armory in Sycamore for the evening and open it to the public so people could watch election returns.

This dispatch from Nov. 3, 1916, paints the picture: “Everyone concedes that next Tuesday night will be the busiest one DeKalb has had in some years past, and no one has any better idea of this busy matter than do the telephone girls.

“On a night of an election, especially such as the one will come Tuesday everyone uses the telephone and oftentimes, all are calling the one place where the re-

Daily Chronicle, Nov. 8, 1879 turns are to be learned and for Tuesday night, this will be the Armory, numbers 23 or 31, and the girls are already wondering if they will get through the evening alive.”

Over time, election night in DeKalb County has evolved along with technological improvements. The action moved from the armory to the DeKalb County Clerk’s Office. That’s where it will be next week, although much of the work is done by computer and the results spread via the Internet.

Here are some of the most interesting election reports I could find in the Chronicle over the years: • “Mayfield Township, north of DeKalb, will remain dry after its residents voted 123-113 Tuesday to continue a ban on the sale of liquor. The owners of Twin Gables Restaurant, Tom and Monica Amaloo, had petitioned residents to bring the matter to a referendum.” (Nov. 8, 1978, Daily Chronicle) • “Sycamore had the honor today of having the oldest suffragette to go to the polls and it is believed that nowhere in the country will the record be beaten.

She was Mrs. Margaret Swinbank, aged 101 years who was helped from her carriage at the polling place in her precinct and cast her ballot on the local option proposition.” (April 7, 1914, Daily Chronicle) • “At the close of his introductory remarks, [Maine Sen. Edmund] Muskie asked for the hall’s lights to be turned on to prevent the need for the television camera crews to blind portions of the audience as they attempted to film their interpretation of a presidential campaign in the ‘western boonies’ as one television weatherman calls this area.”

DAILY CHRONICLE Clinton Rosette Middle School collaborated with Huntley Middle School on its 12th annual Science Fair. A total of 69 science projects were on display at this year’s fair, including 65 created by Clinton Rosette eighth-graders and four by Huntley sixth-graders.

CRMS students have worked on their projects in science and language arts classes since October. A variety of topics were covered such as: What makes the best cookies, whether or not yawning is contagious, and how aging affects fears.

Sixty-seven judges from around the community, including current and former DeKalb School District 428 staff, Northern Illinois University professors and students, parents, and school board members, assisted with the fair.

The school bee was the first round in the 28th Annual National Geographic Bee. Thousands of schools around the United States and in the five U.S. territories are participating in the 2016 contest.

The school champions, including Ross, took a qualifying test where up to 100 of the top scorers in each state are eligible to compete in their state bee.

Ross’ score was high enough to qualify for the state bee on April 1.

The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state winners to participate in the national championship rounds May 22 to May 25.

The first-place national champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society (including a subscription to National Geographic magazine), and a National Geographic Expeditions trip to a national park in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service.

The national finals will air on television on the National Geographic Channel and PBS stations.

Tips for managing sinus infection Dear Dr. K: My doctor won’t give me an antibiotic for my sinus infection. So what can I do to feel better?

Dear Reader: Most cases of sinusitis are caused by viral infections. Viruses are bulletproof to antibiotics. All antibiotics can do in this case is cause side effects.

So, the best course of action for occasional sinusitis is to use self-care steps to ease symptoms while the body clears the infection.

Your sinuses are hollow spaces in your facial bones. In response to infection, the sensitive lining of the sinuses swells up and starts to pour out mucus, triggering nasal stuffiness, a runny nose and facial pain. You also might experience fatigue, cough, impaired sense of smell, fullness or pressure in the ears or headache.

While your body fights the infection, these self-care steps can help to ease symptoms: • Spray in some saline. Saline (saltwater) rinses are very soothing. Frequent, gentle snorts of a prepackaged saline spray can help to loosen mucus.

• Use decongestants. Over-the-counter decongestant pills or nasal sprays can be used on a limited basis to reduce stuffiness.

– Nasal spray decongestants: Limit yourself to no more than two doses a nostril a day for no longer than five days. If you use a nasal decongestant for too long, you can get the opposite effect from what you seek: Your nose may start running when you stop using the decongestant.

– Decongestant pills: A common side effect of these pills is moderate jitteriness.

You shouldn’t take such pills if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure or a heart condition.

• Take a pain reliever to ease headache or facial pain. When experiencing inflammation, you may get more benefit from a

So when might it be reasonable to ask your doctor to prescribe antibiotics for a sinus infection because it might be caused by bacteria? Here are some rules of the road: • When the symptoms are prolonged. For example, if after 10 days your infection is not getting better, it’s reasonable to call your doctor and ask about an antibiotic.

• When the symptoms are severe. Alarm signs of a bacterial sinus infection are sharp pain in the cheeks or teeth accompanied by a fever.

• When the symptoms are getting worse. If you have cold-like symptoms that progress to severe pain and fever, antibiotics might be worth considering.

Finally, even if your doctor does eventually prescribe an antibiotic, don’t expect too much. In clinical trials that compared antibiotics to a placebo pill for confirmed bacterial sinusitis, the antibiotic had minimal effect.

Why is that? Most likely it’s because the sinuses are blocked. A bacterial sinus infection needs to drain. It’s like a boil on your skin, if you’ve ever had one. Antibiotics help only a little – until the boil is lanced and the pus inside drains away.

Also, the antibiotic in the bloodstream can’t reach the bacteria inside the sinus, just the bacteria in the lining of the sinus (which is where the blood is flowing).

WAGE RULES: Each craft, type of worker and mechanic needed to execute the Contract shall be paid the prevailing wage rate for the locality in which the work is performed, in accordance with all federal laws and laws of the State as well as local ordinances and regulations applicable to the work hereunder and having force of law.

PERFORMANCE BOND: A performance and payment bond for the full amount of the Contract will be required of the successful bidder. All costs associated with the bond shall be included in the bid amount.

RIGHTS RESERVED BY OWNER:The Owner reserves the right to waive any irregularities and/or reject any or all bids when, in the opinion of the Owner, such action will serve the best interests of the Owner.

WITHDRAWAL OF BIDS: No bid may be withdrawn for a period of 60 days after the opening of bids without written consent of the Owner.
