Lessons learned shopping alone POLL Usually when I shop for clothes, I ask my wife to come along. I’m an impulse buyer. She keeps me grounded.

But she was busy Saturday, so there I was, alone in department stores, bumbling through the racks like a babe in the wilderness.

Things I noticed: • Stores here will sell you cuff links, but good luck finding a shirt with which you can wear cuff links. (I couldn’t.)

• No matter their age, most men seem to shop with women. The opposite is not true.

• Lone guys will ask others for advice because most of us don’t trust ourselves. “Are these two the same shade of green?” Uhh …

SYCAMORE – Residents can vote early at five locations throughout the county, including the DeKalb Township building.

Voting equipment was delivered Feb. 26 to the DeKalb County Legislative Center, 200 N. Main St., Sycamore; DeKalb Township Building, 2323 S. Fourth St., DeKalb; Northern Illinois University Holmes Student Center, Kirkland Village Hall, 511 W. Main St., Kirkland; and the Sandwich Fire Station, 310 E. Railroad St., Sandwich.

From today through Sunday, polls will be open at the same locations from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

“There should be a time frame somewhere in there, even if you’re a working person or something else,” DeKalb County Clerk and Recorder Doug Johnson said.

NEW YORK – It could be said that it’s where the magic and witchcraft began.

The humble chair J.K. Rowling sat on while writing the first two books of the Harry Potter series is going on the auction block April 6 in New York City with an opening bid of $45,000.

It’s an ordinary-looking chair but magical in that Rowling placed “this unassuming 1930s-era oak chair with a replacement burlap seat decorated with a red thistle ... in front of her typewriter and went about writing two of the most important books of the modern era,” said James Gannon, director of rare books at Heritage Auctions.

DeKalb, Sycamore well water is regularly tested

bkeeperman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – DeKalb residents use about 3 million gallons of water a day, and regular testing and attention to infrastructure are necessary to maintain safe tap quality, water division officials said.

Officials test the city water on a regular basis for things such as chlorine, fluoride, phosphate, iron, lead, radium and a laundry list of other contaminants. DeKalb draws water from its nine wells and officials said the water in the region is naturally high quality.

“We test for over 100 contaminants,” said Bryan Faivre, superintendent of the DeKalb’s utilities division.

“Well water quality remains constant, with our water supply.”

Although well water quality throughout DeKalb County is good, in the city of DeKalb, it’s then sent to a water treatment plant for filtration and iron softening.

Flint, Michigan’s recent water crisis has caused greater resident inquiry into how well their communities monitor water supply and quality testing. The situation at Flint began after switching the water supply from a municipal water source to sourcing water from the Flint River, without taking proper precautions to keep the corrosive river water from eating away at the pipes and leeching dangerous lead into the tap water. DeKalb officials said they take the proper steps to make sure water stays safe for residents.

“We bypass some water because we don’t want completely soft water. It’s corrosive to the pipes,” Faivre said.

“So we soften about half of it, which also removes radium. … We also go through iron filtration and add chlorine, fluoride and phosphate.”

Chlorine acts as a disinfectant and phosphate sequesters off iron in the water. The iron will remain in suspension and coat the inside of the pipes, which prevents copper and lead from leeching into the water, he added.

The city recently raised its water rates, a hike of 2.2 percent that will show up on bills in July and rise 4.5 percent from 2017 to 2020. The increased revenue is to go toward capital improvements within the water system infrastructure over the next decade.

More than 177 miles of water mains run through DeKalb and more than 27,000 feet have been identified for replacement because they have broken three times between valves in the past 10 years, according to city documents.

The city of Sycamore also draws its water from a well system. Sycamore has four deep wells and two water towers to store water. and keep water pressure up. Equipment referred to as high frequency drivers are installed to make sure the motors start at slow rate, to keep sudden surges of water – which can cause infrastructure problems – to a minimum.

2 candidates compete in only contested County Board race

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The only contested County Board race features one candidate who lost his bid for the seat four years ago, and another who’s making another foray into public service after a 30-year hiatus.

Candidates Phyllis Brown, 68, and Jerald Osland, 61, are vying to be the Republican to represent residents in the county’s 12th District, which includes Sandwich. The incumbent, Jeffrey Metzger, decided not to seek reelection. Osland lost to Metzger in 2012.

Osland said he resurrected his run for office because he disagrees with some of what local government officials in Sandwich have done.

“Because I live in the country, I couldn’t run for any office in the city of Sandwich,” said Osland. “The only thing I could do, if I wanted to participate in trying to be effective in government, was run for County Board.”

He said his family has lived in DeKalb County for seven generations.

The excavation entrepreneur, who has never held elected office, said he will bring his business acumen to the board.

“Having run a business and built it on my own, I think I understand what the needs are of people who are trying to live in the area,” said Osland, who attended Waubonsee Community College.

Brown said she’s jumping back into politics after finding out that, after Metzger announced he was moving on, it seemed no one else was going to run. She said her previous political experience and ability to work with others, help qualify her to be elected now.

Brown came to DeKalb County in 2010 after living for years in Warrenville. There, she was appointed in 1977 to the planning commission, then in 1979 successfully ran for alderman. But shortly after that, she took a break from politics to help

raise her children.

“I got busier in architecture and sort of specializing, up until 2008, in custom homes,” said Brown, a University of Illinois at Chicago Circle Campus (now University of Illinois at Chicago) alumna. “Now I mainly specialize in doing commercial buildings.”

Both candidates said fellow area Republicans encouraged them to seek the County Board seat. They both have different perspectives on the area’s needs.

Brown said she’s heard from constituents who are concerned with how future plans for the county could affect farmers. She said she’s been attending County Board meetings to stay abreast – and on the lookout.

“My concern became, well, we should avoid planning in farming areas, obviously,” said Brown. “Keep it along the major east-west or northsouth thoroughfares so as not to disenfranchise the farmers.”

Osland feels that the Prairie Band

Potawatomi Nation’s proposal for gaming in Shabbona is one of the biggest issues facing the county. He wouldn’t say whether or not he supports the project.

“In my opinion, It would be highly unlikely to think, that it’s only going remain a bingo gambling facility,” Osland said. “They would probably, at some point in time after they get the door open, approach [casino] gaming also.”

This election year much has been said about polarized the Republican and Democrat parties have become.

Democrats currently hold the majority on the County Board, and the Democratic Chairman Mark Pietrowski Jr. 3rd district, has said he looks forward to bipartisanship prevailing.

Osland said he’s for that.

“A good idea is a good idea, period,” he said. “I could care less” which party it comes from.

Brown said she would be looking at the makeup of committees for balance.

Convicted sex offender held on $50,000 bond DAILY CHRONICLE SYCAMORE – A DeKalb County judge ordered a Cortland man listed as a sexual predator held in lieu of $50,000 bond on a felony charge of failing to register as a sex offender even though family members said he had registered.

David M. Matuszewski, 29, of the first David M. block of East South Matuszewski Avenue, Cortland, was arrested at his home Sunday morning on a warrant for violating the sex offender registration act, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Judge Philip Montgomery kept bond at $50,000, citing a court services report that said Matuszewski was con-

sidered “high risk” to re-offend. The judge appointed the DeKalb County Public Defender’s Office to represent Matuszewski after the man’s parents said they couldn’t afford to hire an attorney on his behalf.

They also said that Matuszewski was registered in Cortland and was in the process of entering an in-patient rehabilitation program.

Matuszewski pleaded guilty in 2011 to charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and aggravated battery – the battery charge was because he reportedly spat in the face of a DeKalb police officer. The victim in the sexual abuse case was 16.

He was sentenced to six years in prison, with credit for the time he had already spent in jail, records show.

Matuszewski is next due in court Thursday. He remained at the DeKalb County Jail as of Monday evening.

Born: March 30, 1949; in Russellville, AL Died: March 4, 2016; in Genoa, IL Charles A. (Chuck) Criswell, 66, of Genoa died Friday, March 4, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born March 30, 1949, in Russellville, AL. The son of Allen and Opal (Dees) Criswell. He married Terry R. Kelley on August 28, 1967 in Clinton, IA. He started working for University Volkswagen in 1967 on the wash rack, ultimately working his way up to service manager and in March of 1990 he opened his own business Chuck’s Auto Center on Route 23 in Sycamore. He was always proud to say that he “serviced cars for nearly 50 years on the same road.”

Chuck took pride in providing quality/honest service to his customers and community.

He enjoyed many years of being a car show participant, but loved going to judged shows the most. He was particularly proud of winning the top prize in his category in both the Beloit and Amboy shows with his two favorite cars, his ‘69 442 and his ‘69 Cutlass Convertible. His love of car shows led him to found the Turning Back Time car show in Sycamore, which he ran for 12 years before passing it on after having back surgery.

He was the past governor for the DeKalb Moose Club. Chuck was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and neon collector and enjoyed hosting the annual Baby Boomers Bash for his former Sycamore High School classmates. While his work and his cars were large parts of his life, the most important thing to Chuck was his family. To simply call Chuck a “family man” is a huge understate-

His Visitation will be on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Butala Funeral Home and Crematory in Sycamore. His Funeral Service will be on Saturday, March 12th at 11:00 AM at the Butala Funeral Home and Crematory, 1405 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, with Rev. Stephen Persson officiating. Kinzinger tours the DeKalb Public Library

bkeeperman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger was impressed with the newly expanded DeKalb Public Library after a Monday morning tour.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” said Kinzinger, a Republican from the 16th District. “It’s really pretty amazing to see the technology at play. … If it exists anywhere else, I don’t know of it.”

Officials had been planning the $25.3 million expansion project for years and it’s almost complete. The project broke ground in July 2014 and in January, the addition opened to the public.

The library previously operated out of the historic 19,500-square-foot Haish Memorial Library building, which now is being renovated. Construction will be finished in July with a grand opening set for September, officials said.

Accessibility and expanding literacy in all of its different forms have been a main focus of the expansion project.

Kinzinger said that for him, the importance of expanding access to things such as technology and books was for the good of future generations.

“It’s not just being able to read and write for kids,” he said. “It’s about learning to take care of yourself. Learning to

The state was to pay out the grant in four installments, but because of the crisis, the library is out $4.5 million until Illinois has a budget and the funds are appropriated. In the interim, library officials have taken out a $450,000 closed end of credit loan to cover the shortfall.

“Illinois has a tough budget,” Kinzinger said. “But what we can’t do is stop investing in our public infrastructure, that’s not just our roads and bridges but that’s our youth and next generation. Investing in that next generation to make sure they have the skills and jobs to provide for their family and stay in Illinois.”

Breaks can be caused for a variety of different reasons, including increased pressure, the age of the pipes and water pump wear and tear. Sycamore also tests water on a regular basis, under Environmental Protection Agency standards, Swedberg said.

DeKalb’s water testing lab is state certified and occasionally tests water for other municipalities, said Matt Anderson, lab supervisor within the DeKalb Water Division.

Officials explained that bumping the sales tax up was more palatable than trying to raise property taxes. They said the penny-on-the-dollar increase would keep residents from fully footing a tax increase.

“We don’t have a lot of businesses in town; we’re trying to get business,” Ekle said. “There’s a lot of transient traffic that would help pay the 1 percent, and help our situation, better than just handing all that [tax increase] to the [residents] of Waterman.”

Trustee Roger Bosworth said the sales tax increase would be one of the first major revenue increases for the town in decades. He explained that income has remained flat, while the village has faced having to pay out more.

WATERMAN – Village board members have voted to ask residents in the March 15 primary if they want to increase the sales tax rate by 1 percent in order to cover local government expenses.

“We felt a 1 percent tax would impact [residents] the least,” Village President Thomas Ekle said.

If a majority of voters approve an increase, the town’s sales tax rate would go from 6.25 percent to 7.25 percent on purchases of items such as prepared food, soft drinks and candy, personal hygiene items and auto parts. Items including prescriptions, groceries, and medical appliances are subject to a reduced rate.

Ekle said a sales tax increase is expected to generate about $80,000 annually. The money would help the village pay for police, public works and other village services. Ekle said the village currently has three full-time and two part-time police officers, and he wants to increase

Prosecutors look into vote-buying allegations

Student loan scams new to list of top consumer woes

CHICAGO – Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan said student borrowers dealing with mounting loan debt are a new addition to her annual list of consumer complaints.

Madigan released the top-ten list on Monday. She said consumer debt and identity theft were ranked numbers one and two for the eighth year in a row. But she said this year her office received more than 1,500 complaints about student loan servicers and for-profit schools.

Education-related complaints came in seventh on this year’s list. Madigan said the ranking reflects the growing student loan debt crisis. She said her office will “continue to combat the many scams targeting these students.”

Other complaints included telemarketers, construction, used vehicle sales and Internet or mail-order products. Madigan’s office said it received more than 25,000 complaints last year.

Mattoon health office to close over budget problems

MATTOON – A county health department in central Illinois said it will close one of its offices because of the state’s ongoing budget crisis.

Dunkin, who represents a predominantly Democratic district, has drawn criticism from fellow Democrats for supporting Republican legislation.

He has been the spoiler for Democrats on several key votes affecting union allies, either by being absent or voting against party-led attempts to weaken Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s position in negotiations with the state workers’ union.

His opponent in Illinois’ March 15 primary, Juliana Stratton, received a rare endorsement Monday from President Barack Obama, who recorded radio and TV ads supporting her in

the race.

Secretary of State Jesse White, another Democrat who supports Stratton, told the AP Monday after watching the videos that “it is clear that bribery was taking place.”

“I’m disappointed in him (Dunkin),” said White, who was re-elected for his fifth term in 2014. “Shame on him.”

In Illinois, vote buying is a Class 4 felony.

Dunkin did not immediately returned calls from the AP for comment.

In a statement to the Chicago SunTimes on Sunday, a spokesman said the allegations were part of “desperate tactics” and “dirty tricks” by Stratton’s supporters.

The Mattoon Journal-Gazette reported that the Coles County Health Department plans to close its Mattoon office on Tuesday. The department’s main office in Charleston will remain open.

Administrator Diana Stenger said the department is owed $169,000 by the state, primarily from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Illinois has been without a state budget for the fiscal year that began in July amid an impasse between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the majority-Democrat Legislature.

“The day of the shooting we lost half of our kids. This is a room that’s fully ready to go. You got infants, toddlers and preschool. This would be a preschool room, and now this room is empty.”

Neither the day care nor the church, which lost about 75 percent of its membership, has ever recovered, Brown said.

As many as 45 witnesses are expected to testify during the trial at the Winnebago County Criminal Justice Center. The trial is expected to last one to three weeks.

Rockford Police Department officers Oda Poole and Stan North on Aug. 24, 2009, chased Barmore into the church and trapped him in a boiler room.

A confrontation ensued as Poole and North forced open a door to the boiler room. Barmore was shot at least four times during what North and Poole said was a struggle for Poole’s firearm.

According to an investigation by the Cook County Integrity Task Force and the state police, a Winnebago County Grand Jury did not indict the officers, and authorities determined the shooting a justified use of force.

Jury selected in Rockford police shooting trial

ROCKFORD – A jury was selected Monday to hear a lawsuit filed against the city of Rockford by a church where police shot and killed an unarmed black man in 2009.

Kingdom Authority International Ministries Church is seeking compensation for emotional distress suffered by children and day care operators who were present when Mark Anthony Barmore was killed. The church also claims it lost revenue after the shooting. Opening statements are expected Tuesday.

The Rev. Melvin Brown told the Rockford Register Star that about 150 children were enrolled at the day care when the shooting occurred, compared with 50 children today.

“This room here has been empty since the shooting,” said the Rev. Melvin Brown during an interview last week, indicating the church day care’s brightly equipped and decorated preschool room that once accommodated 16 children.

URBANA – U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor said the late Justice Antonin Scalia was like the brother she sometimes “wanted to kill” but loved and misses.

Sotomayor told a crowd at the University of Illinois College of Law on Monday that the politically conservative Scalia often said things “just to annoy me.”

But the liberal-leaning Sotomayor said that despite their disagreements, “on a personal level, he was very warm.”

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Trying to make a stand in Michigan, Sen. Bernie Sanders said Monday that Hillary Clinton was being disingenuous when she asserted that he opposed the auto bailout that rescued carmakers General Motors and Chrysler from oblivion during the economic crisis.

Sanders sought to defend his record ahead of Tuesday’s crucial Michigan primary and blunt the former secretary of state’s momentum in the Democratic presidential contest. The bailout of the U.S. auto industry by Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama remains popular in Michigan, the home of the U.S. auto industry, and has been credited with preserving the Midwest’s manufacturing base.

“Secretary Clinton went out of her way to mischaracterize my history as it relates to the 2008 auto industry bailout,” the Vermont senator said during a rally in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

“Let me be as clear as I can: There was one vote in the United States Senate on whether or not to support the auto bailout and protect jobs in Michigan and around this country. I voted for the auto bailout.”

The bailout provided $13.4 billion at the end of the Bush administration with the last $4 billion contingent on the release of the second installment of the Wall Street bailout funds.

In Sunday night’s debate, Clinton declared that Sanders “was against the auto bailout. In January 2009, President-elect Obama asked everybody in the Congress to vote for the bailout. The money was there, and had to be released in order to save the American auto industry.”

She added: “I voted to save the auto industry. He voted against the money that ended up saving the auto industry. I think that is a pretty big difference.” Clinton’s campaign began airing a radio ad Monday in Michigan with a similar message.

Clinton was referring to a Jan. 15, 2009, vote in which the Senate considered a motion to block the release of the second half of the $700 billion financial rescue package. Both Bush and Obama, then the president-elect, had urged Congress to release the second $350 billion of the Troubled Asset Relief Program funds.

The effort to block the funds was led by Louisiana Sen. David Vitter, a Republican, and the measure was defeated by 45 Democrats, including Clinton, and a handful of Republicans.

Sanders, who opposed the Wall Street bailout, voted with Vitter’s side to block the money.

Leifheit spent 25 of his 27 years of full-time law enforcement experience, as a National Rifle Association certified firearms instructor. Now, as the owner and main instructor at Northern Illinois Carry, Leifheit offers women’s-only instruction, Illinois concealed-carry courses and women’s-only concealed-carry courses.

“This is one way of expressing their Second Amendment rights by their ability to carry concealed,” he said.

Anyone older than 21 can register for Northern Illinois Carry courses and apply for their concealed-carry permit. BRIEFS UPS honors drivers for 25 years of safe driving

One hundred UPS drivers from Illinois, including four from DeKalb, are among 1,613 newly inducted worldwide into the Circle of Honor, an honorary organization for UPS drivers who have achieved 25 or more years of accident-free driving.

Illinois boasts 456 active Circle of Honor drivers with a combined 12,969 years of accident-free driving. The four from DeKalb are James Gow, Steven Johnson, Cedric Little and Walter Staats. Ralph Lendi of Tinley Park is the state’s senior-most safe driver, with 45 years of accident-free driving under his belt. There are 5,254 total UPS drivers in Illinois.

Globally, 8,703 active UPS drivers are members of the Circle of Honor. Collectively they’ve racked up more than 245,000 years and more than 5.3 billion safe miles during their careers. That’s enough miles to travel to Mars and back 19 times.

Elder Care Services of DeKalb County I graduated from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, IA with a Bachelorʼs of Science Degree in Psychology. Soon after graduation, I started working as a Case Manager at Lutheran Social Services in Sterling, IL working with the aging population. I discovered I had found my calling and knew I wanted to spend my career working with this population. In 2003 I was nominated for Case Manager of the Year by my supervisor at Lutheran Social Services.

In 2010 I was offered a position at Elder Care Services in DeKalb as a Care Coordinator, again working with the aging population. Though it was hard to leave my position at Lutheran Social Services, as I had been there for 13 years, I felt it was time for a change and felt Elder Care Services offered more opportunities for growth and improvement and accepted the position at Elder Care Services. I have never regretted this decision and love working at Elder Care Services. As a Care Coordinator, I conduct in-home assessments on people in DeKalb county age 60 and older and coordinate in-home services for them so they can remain living safely in the community rather than go to a nursing facility. I am also a certified Adult Protective Services Investigator and a Transition Coordinator. As an Adult Protective Services Investigator, I investigate suspected cases of abuse on people age 60 and older and the adult population in DeKalb County with disabilities. As a Transition Coordinator, I meet with residents in nursing facilities in DeKalb County who are interested in transitioning back into the community. If they choose to move back into the community, I assist them with their transition back into the community. In August 2015, I was promoted to Care Coordination Supervisor at Elder Care Services. I have 18 years of experience working with the again population.

Register, vote any day before election Illinois should be applauded for the steps it has taken to increase voter turnout in our elections.

Early voting, which runs the two weeks before Election Day, gains in popularity every election. Among the most recent initiatives is grace period voting, which offers people who missed the deadline to register to vote the opportunity to register and vote the same day during early voting.

Early voting and grace period voting opened Feb. 29 in DeKalb County for the March 15 primary election.

To register, voters need to bring two forms of ID that show name and proof of residence. A photo ID is not required.

There are five locations around DeKalb County where voters can vote early, or register and vote early. They will be open every day until March 14 in these communities: • In Sycamore at the Legislative Center, 200 N. Main St. • In DeKalb at the DeKalb Township Building, 2323 S. Fourth St. • On the Northern Illinois University campus at the Holmes Student Center’s Blackhawk Annex.

• In Kirkland at village hall, 511 W. Main St. • In Sandwich at the fire station, 310 E. Railroad St. The five early voting stations will be open from today through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On Monday, the Sycamore site will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the other sites open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

A United States student’s plight

Two months after he disappeared from the airport in Pyongyang, North Korea, University of Virginia student Otto Warmbier resurfaced in a state TV broadcast last week.

In what surely was a scripted and coerced performance, he tearfully apologized for an offense that would be regarded as trivial in almost any other country: Warmbier said he “committed the crime of taking down a political slogan from the staff holding area” of the hotel where he and his group had lodged.

It’s impossible to know what the 21-year-old honors student really may have done, if anything. The statement he was obliged to make contained patently ridiculous details, such as that he was following instructions from a Methodist church near his home outside Cincinnati, a University of Virginia student society and the U.S. government.

What’s clear is that Warmbier has become the latest American hostage taken by the North Korean regime, which has a habit of using captured U.S. citizens to fabricate propaganda and compel high-level

visits to its otherwise isolated capital.

Warmbier, who said he made “the mistake of his life,” did so at a particularly unfortunate moment. Four days after his arrest, the regime of Kim Jong Un presided over the country’s fourth nuclear test; a month later, it launched what it said was a satellite into orbit, breaking another United Nations ban on advancing its development of intercontinental missiles.

The U.N. Security Council responded with a new round of sanctions last week, and relations between North Korea and its neighbors South Korea and China – not to mention the United States – plunged to a low point.

It won’t be surprising if the Kim regime now attempts to use Warmbier as leverage, particularly in light of past successes in extracting symbolic concessions from Washington.

In the past half-dozen years alone, the regime has won visits from former presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton and National Intelligence Director James R.

Clapper in exchange for the release of Americans charged with offenses such as leaving a Bible in a nightclub restroom and entering the country illegally.

Warmbier does not deserve to be so used. A junior at U-Va. majoring in economics, he is an outstanding student who was awarded a scholarship for academic excellence and serves on the school’s student council. He traveled to North Korea with a group organized by a China-based tour company, Young Pioneer. The company advertises North Korea as “one of the safest places in the world to visit” – a claim belied by this patently unjust detention.

Warmbier’s parents, who have not been able to speak to him, issued a statement after the TV broadcast saying they hoped his apology would prompt the government to “consider his youth and make an important humanitarian gesture by allowing him to return to his loved ones.”

Kim could help to ease tensions with Washington by quickly and unconditionally complying.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

VIEWS Michael Barone scams perpetrated by Trump University and Ted Cruz’s reminders that the fraud case – which Trump says may take three years to resolve – will be litigated during campaign season may have hit home.

Throughout the debate, the most effective criticisms of Trump came from Ted Cruz. Again and again, in stentorian tones, he interwove the themes that Trump is not a conservative and cannot be trusted to follow through on his promised immigration crackdown. Rubio underlined this with adept criticism of Trump’s reversal on H1-B visas.

John Kasich refrained from going after Trump – which denied Trump rebuttal time required under debate rules. Instead, Kasich made a strong case for himself and took solid conservative stands, switching from his previous answer on religious liberty. His performance seemed pitched to help him win Ohio.

In effect, if not in so many words, Trump’s three remaining opponents seemed to be operating as a tag team, in line with the strategy Mitt Romney laid out.

In Florida, Trump opponents should vote for Marco Rubio on

March 15, thus denying Trump its 99 winner-take-all delegates. In Ohio, they should vote that day for John Kasich, denying Trump the state’s 66 winner-take-all delegates.

In states where Ted Cruz leads, such as Louisiana, they should vote for Cruz.

The purpose is to deny Trump the 1,237 delegates he needs for a majority at the convention in July.

Trump’s advocates call this an establishment cabal. But a candidate who has broken every rule of decorum and substance, accusing a Republican president of lying the nation into war, is estopped from complaining about others not observing conventional rules.

Whether such tactical voting, common in parliamentary systems such as Britain’s, will work is unclear. There’s little time between contests for reliable polling. But if a majority of Republican primary voters don’t want Trump and would settle for any of the alternatives on offer, it just could work. There’s nothing wrong with refusing to nominate a candidate opposed by a majority.

From Trump supporters I hear the argument that things have gone so badly over the last 15 years that a Trump presidency, for all its possible pitfalls, or the possibility that he could lose to Hillary Clinton, could not be worse.

But anyone who knows 20th century history knows that the downside risk for a society with the wrong leaders can be not just marginal but catastrophic. Trump’s assurance that U.S. troops would follow his orders, even if contrary to law, should be chilling to anyone familiar with that history.

Near the end of the debate, Ted Cruz made that point eloquently by citing Detroit and how, in his view, 50 years of liberal governance destroyed so much of a once-thriving city.

I saw that destruction as an intern in the Detroit mayor’s office during the 1967 riot and in repeated visits over the years afterward, destruction wreaked in large part because of policies now advocated by the Black Lives Matter movement and Hillary Clinton.

Rubio, Cruz and Kasich all lead Hillary Clinton in public polls.

Donald Trump trails behind in virtually every one. Perhaps those now whooping and hollering for Trump will realize the pitfalls of a Trump nomination could be disastrous.

Remembering Nancy Reagan, formidable first lady

The list of influential modern first ladies always includes Eleanor Roosevelt and Hillary Clinton, but not usually Nancy Reagan. That’s a mistake.

Reagan, who died Sunday at 94, had a big influence on her husband, President Ronald Reagan, both in shaping White House operations in his first term and encouraging his breakthrough relations with the Soviet Union in his second.

For more than a half century, the Reagans’ love story was so intense that at times it burned at the expense of family, friends and politics.

That could be a political liability. Reagan’s lavish spending habits and social friends became political baggage. Her fixation on astrology after the 1981 assassination attempt on her husband was a distraction for the White House.

Before Ronald Reagan reached

the White House, including during his two terms as governor of California, his wife was seen more as a stylish, protective spouse than a substantive mover and shaker.

That changed after Reagan became president in 1980. The Republican right wing was determined to shape the new administration’s agenda by putting Edwin Meese, a hard-line conservative, in charge of the White House staff. Mrs. Reagan, working with her old confidant, Michael Deaver, instead persuaded her husband to tap James Baker as chief of staff even though Baker had been the campaign manager of her husband’s primary rival (and then running mate), George H.W. Bush.

Meese instead became counsellor to the president.

The Baker-Deaver duo proved remarkably effective at pushing a conservative agenda in a politically pragmatic way. Reagan won re-election four years later in a landslide.

When Baker and Treasury Secre-

tary Donald Regan switched jobs at the start of the second term, the new White House chief of staff ran afoul of the first lady. That was Regan’s mistake. After the Iran-contra scandal, involving arms-selling to Iran in exchange for release of American hostages, she helped engineer his ouster in 1987.

She also encouraged her husband to seize an opening for a better relationship with the Soviet Union.

She forged a close alliance with Secretary of State George Shultz – they had scores of telephone conversations – at the expense of the more conservative national security adviser, William Clark, a longtime Reagan ally. Clark, too, was discarded, and Reagan signed a sweeping arms control pact with the Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev. In 1991, about three years after Reagan left office, the Soviet Union collapsed.

It wasn’t that President Reagan was easy to manipulate. But these

were controversial issues and there was conflicting advice. His wife, more than anyone, knew how to appeal to him and had his confidence.

After her White House years, she became a vocal advocate for research on Alzheimer’s disease, which afflicted her husband late in his life.

She also supported some gun control measures, reflecting the continuing influence on her thinking of the 1981 assassination attempt.

She remained a Republican, occasionally appearing at events at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California. But she told friends and acquaintances in recent years she was dismayed at the right-wing tilt of her party, which she believed didn’t reflect the legacy of her “Ronnie.”

The Republican race for president last week converged, suddenly and briefly, in Detroit. In the Fox Theatre, one of the nation’s great 1920s movie palaces, the four remaining presidential candidates fought it out in the Fox News debate.

Earlier that day, Mitt Romney, who grew up in Detroit and suburban Bloomfield Hills when the Motor City was thriving, urged Republicans not to let Donald Trump win the party’s nomination. John McCain joined in with words of support, and the views of the George Bushes can be taken for granted.

All this is a reversal of the usual pattern when the front-runner in the first dozen contests attracts widespread support. But such candidates also have been widely acceptable to a majority of primary voters and caucusgoers. Exit polls establish that Trump isn’t.

At the debate, Marco Rubio started off by pointing out that Trump has won only one-third – 34 percent – of the votes cast. He has finished below 40 percent in the vast majority of contests (16 of 20 as of now). Rubio subjected Trump to the kind of bantering insults Trump has specialized in. Trump’s sputtering interruptions were accompanied by whooping and hollering from the Fox Theatre rafters, but were less effective than in the past.

DeKalb-Sycamore co-op gymnast Aleah Leman – the Daily Chronicle Gymnast of the Year for the second year in a row – medaled in four events at state this year, winning the title in the floor exercise. The DeKalb junior hopes to win the all-round next year.

YCAMORE – All that stood between Aleah Leman and a likely state championship in the all-around was a deduction in the uneven parallel bars.

With her other three events rolling along pretty well, the junior on the DeKalb-Sycamore gymnastics team knows what her offseason is going to look like.

Leman medaled in four events at state this year, including a state title in the floor exercise and is the Daily Chronicle Gymnast of the Year for the second straight year.

Leman ended up in a tie for third in the all-around with a 37.95, finishing behind a senior, as well as champion Maddie Diab, a freshman from Glenbard West.

“I wanted to come in and win all-around, but I’m happy how I ended up,” Leman said.

“I still won floor, and the girl who won is a great gymnast and I love watching her, so I couldn’t be happier with how the year ended up.”

Her 9.025 on the bars during the allaround was the lowest score by any of the top four gymnasts in any of the four events – by almost four-tenths of a point – and yet the strength of her vault, beam and floor kept her close to Diab’s wining score of 38.2.

She also medaled in the other three individual events – winning the floor exercise with a 9.725, finishing in a second-place tie in the balance beam with a 9.45 and taking third in the vault – an event she was the state champion in last year – with a 9.75.

“Right now, my other three events are really strong, so I’ll probably just work on upping my skill on bars,” said Leman, a student at DeKalb. “I need to work as much as I can on keeping a clean form, stuff like that.”

The Barbs took second in the state as a team, behind only Prairie Ridge by about 1.3 points.

With only one senior graduating and a slew of freshmen coming in, coach Andrew Morreale said the team has its sights on a state title, and Leman is looking for not just an all-around crown, but to add to her seven state medals she’s earned in her career.

“I think that would solidify her legacy as the best DHS gymnast so far,” Morreale said. “She’s got [seven] medals in two years, and I think she can have four or five next year. I think that would solidify her.”

sports@daily-chronicle.com The Mid-American Conference announced its all-league basketball teams Monday, and the Northern Illinois men’s and women’s teams each had a player make the third team.

Sophomore center Marin Maric was named to the third team for the men, which had its best season in two decades.

Junior guard Ally Lehman was third team for the NIU women.

Also receiving conference honors was freshman guard Marshawn Wilson (All-Freshman team) and junior guard Aaric Armstead (All-Defensive team).

Maric led the Huskies in both scoring (12.3 points a game) and rebounding (8.5 rebounds a game) recorded 14 double-doubles this season, the third-most in the MAC. He is the first Huskies player to be an all-MAC player since Xavier Silas was first team in 2010-11.

The Northern Illinois women’s basketball team was outscored 41-14 in the second half in a 94-52 loss Monday at Western Michigan in the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament.

Ally Lehman set the NIU school record for rebounds in a season, passing NIU Hall of Famer Tammy Hinchee’s mark of 322 in 1989-90. Lehman finished with 10 rebounds and 14 points. Kelly Smith all scored 14 in the loss for the Huskies (11-19).

Lehman finished the year with 329 rebounds.

The Huskies had the lead early, the last one coming at 9-8, but the Broncos (17-14) scored 14 straight to take control of the game. The Huskies trimmed the lead to 28-25 on a layup by Smith with 7:42 left in the third, but a 16-5 run by the Broncos pushed the lead back to double digits, and it never dipped below 10 again.

Jessica Jessing led four Broncos with 19 points. They shot 55.7 percent and held the Huskies to 31.3 percent for the game – including 13.8 percent (4 for 29) in the second half.

The Broncos head to Cleveland for the MAC quarterfinals Wednesday, facing No. 2 Central Michigan.

The 56 points by NIU was the fewest it scored in conference play, but it also is the second-fewest Western Michigan scored against a MAC team.

“No game is ugly when you win,” Montgomery said. “We pride ourselves in defense and rebounding, and we decided to rebound in the second, and I think we defended good enough to win the game. With it being March madness, it’s one of those, you can bend but don’t break.”

After losing 12 of 13 meeting against Western Michigan, the Huskies now have won two straight against the Broncos – both in DeKalb.

“You win enough games during conference play to get a home game during conference (tournament), that’s big,” Montgomery said.

DeKALB – As it had done all season, the Northern Illinois men’s basketball team found a way to win at home – now it needs to find a way to win three games in Cleveland.

Playing without one of their best players, the No. 7-seeded Huskies used a dominating defense to propel themselves to a 56-50 win over No. 10 Western Michigan in the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament Monday night at the NIU Convocation Center, improving to 18-1 at home this season.

“They’ve been very supportive, we’ve had great crowds this year,” said NIU coach Mark Montgomery, who even grabbed a microphone immediately after the game to address the crowd of 1,594. “I would have liked to have been (19-0), we’d probably already be in Cleveland resting, but credit the guys. It’s no given when you’re at home. You still have to earn it.”

The Huskies (21-11) advance to play No. 2 Ohio at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Quicken Loans Arena.

In the win over Western Michigan on Monday, senior Travon Baker scored a game-high 18 points on 5-for-15 shooting but had a critical stretch in the second half in which he scored seven straight points for the Huskies. After the Broncos (13-19) tied it at 42 with a three-point play by Tucker Haymond (17 points) with 5:35 left, Baker answered with a 3-pointer on the top of the arc, and the

Huskies led the rest of the way.

“Travon Baker made probably the biggest 3 in a long time to put us up three,” Montgomery said of Baker, who followed up that 3 with a pair of free throws and a jumper.

The Huskies were without starting sophomore center Marin Maric (12.3 points, 8.5 rebounds a game) for the second straight game, but have won both contests. Montgomery said the Huskies missed Maric’s physical play in the post against the Broncos, but said he likely will be in the lineup Thursday against the Bobcats.

NIU freshman center Levi Bradley had a double-double off the bench with 13 points and 12 rebounds, and junior guard Aaric Armstead added 12 points and made a pair of critical free throws down the stretch.

The Huskies led, 49-47, with 37 seconds left in the game and with about 26 seconds on the shot clock when Western Michigan coach Steve Hawkins elected to foul Armstead and extend the game by forcing NIU to shoot free throws the rest of the way. The Huskies finished 7 for 8 from the line in the final 33 seconds.

“There was about a 12-second differential in the clock, I think it was, and so do we foul right away or do we let it go down?” Hawkins said of his thinking. “If they score, that’s a really bad time to have. You’re in between what to do and what not to do. That’s one of the worst time differences you can have when you’re down two.”

Western Michigan sophomore guard Thomas Wilder, who came into the game leading the conference with an average of 20.4 points a game in MAC play, finished 0 for 6 with no points in 12 minutes and didn’t play in the second half. Hawkins said Wilder was suffering from turf toe and re-aggravated it during the game.

Managing pain after angioplasty Dear Dr. K: I had angioplasty with a stent recently. I need to take aspirin and Plavix every day. I used to take ibuprofen for pain, but a neighbor said I shouldn’t take it if I’m on aspirin and Plavix. Is that right?

Dear Reader: Taking aspirin and Plavix after angioplasty and stent placement is standard care. Both aspirin and clopidogrel (Plavix) attach to blood cells called platelets to make them less sticky. You need these drugs to prevent the formation of a blood clot inside the stent. If a clot forms in the stent, it suddenly can cut off the blood supply and cause a major heart attack.

Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

Other NSAIDs include naproxen (Naprosyn, Aleve), celecoxib (Celebrex) and diclofenac (Voltaren). Like aspirin, the NSAID drugs both relieve pain and tend to make blood clot less easily.

As a result, the chance of having a serious internal bleed or bleed into the brain is higher when an NSAID is taken in addition to one or more anti-platelet drugs. NSAIDs other than aspirin also increase the chance of a heart attack and stroke in people with heart disease. That risk is unrelated to whether or not you take an anti-platelet agent.

So your neighbor is right that you need to discuss with your doctor whether to continue the ibuprofen. This is how I suggest you think about pain relief: • Start with a non-drug approach. Try a heating pad, ice or physical therapy, if appropriate. Even if these approaches do not completely relieve your pain, they might allow you to take a lower dose of a painkiller.

• Try acetaminophen. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) may be an effective alternative

• Consider other NSAID alternatives.

Non-acetylated salicylates are cousins to aspirin. They include salsalate (Disalcid) and choline magnesium trisalicylate (Trilisate). The bleeding risk is lower because they don’t affect platelets. And they cause less stomach irritation than other NSAIDs. • Use the safest NSAID. Some NSAIDs may be less risky than others. The prescription NSAID diclofenac appears to have the highest risk for a second heart attack. Some studies suggest naproxen has the lowest risk.

• Take your aspirin first. Not only does the aspirin you’re taking reduce your risk of a clot forming in the stent, it also reduces your risk of a clot forming elsewhere in the arteries of your heart and brain.

That reduces your risk of heart attack and stroke. Some studies indicate NSAIDs may interfere with aspirin’s protective effect.

So if you have heart disease and must use an NSAID, take the aspirin first. Wait an hour. Then take your required dose of the NSAID drug.

• Use only what you need. Take the lowest effective dose of an NSAID for the shortest period of time to relieve your pain.

Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY How do you handle household Jeanne expenses with a Phillips partner?

My boyfriend and I have been in a relationship for 10 years. In all this time, he never once has split any of the expenses with me. I pay for everything. He does buy groceries, although not all of them. He also helps around the house and with my daughter.

If I bring up the issue of sharing expenses, it turns into a fight. He says he’s “sorry” he doesn’t make enough money. Then he says all that matters to me is money and threatens to move out.

I feel completely taken advantage of because he does have the money to make $300-plus monthly payments for his new boat. To me it’s all about priorities. I would like a new car, but I have other monthly bills to pay.

The inventor of the Michaels Cue-Bid had unimaginative parents, because his name was Michael Michaels. But he had an imaginative idea. If an opponent opens one of a minor, an immediate overcall of two of the same minor shows at least 5-5 in the majors. If the opening bid is in a major, two of that major indicates at least five cards in both the other major and either minor.

In this deal, North shows both majors, with something like 10-plus points. You find the right fit first, then hope to judge the level correctly.

What should South bid over two clubs?

His decision is based on fit and hand strength. Here, the fit is decent, because nine trumps are much better than eight, and two aces are wonderful. South must jump to at least three spades (and four spades isn’t crazy).

To bid only two spades, which might be on a 2-1-5-5 hand, for example, is not nearly enough.

Here, North would control-bid four clubs (to show slam interest with a first-round club control), South would control-bid four diamonds, North would use Roman Key Card Blackwood (for choice), and sign off in six spades when he learns that the spade queen is missing.

South wins the diamond lead, cashes two top trumps (unlucky), then plays on hearts to discard his diamond loser.
