Challenging judicial candidates POLL

YESTERDAY’S RESULTS

I’ve heard from some people this past week who are frustrated that judges aren’t held accountable for their decisions on the bench.

In theory, they can be. They’re elected officials, paid with public funds (and of course receiving public pensions.) But generally speaking, the public either doesn’t or can’t hold them accountable very often.

Even when they’re supposedly up for election, such as Judge Bradley Waller is at the moment.

Waller’s name came up in a story that upset some people last week.

It was about Christian Contreras, a 19-year-old man who had been arrested in connection with the broad-daylight shooting of two people in DeKalb’s Pleasant Street neighborhood.

At the time of the shooting, Contreras was not only on felony probation – the terms of which he had violated – he was also free on bail for new charges that included being a felon in possession of a weapon after he was arrested Jan. 30, attacking a person he thought was in a rival gang while in the company of another known gang member.

Waller set Contreras’ bond at $5,000, requiring him to post $500 bail to be released.

Contreras did that rather quickly, and went back to running around on the streets and using marijuana, in violation of the terms of his probation.

Waller is on the ballot this spring, a Republican candidate for Judge of the 23rd Circuit Court.

More to the point, he’s the candidate. He

So, unless someone comes forward, there probably won’t be a lot of explanation.

There won’t be much vetting of Waller’s record. He’ll be the judge we get, and that will be the end of it.

I’ve never appeared before Waller.

In fact, we had to go to the courthouse to figure out who it was that had scribbled a signature on Contreras’ bond order.

Something tells me, however, that if Waller had an opponent in the general election, all of us would learn more about him.

That would be a big positive. People are best served when their elected officials are tested at the ballot box. It leads to accountability, something the public deserves from all branches of government.

Especially when those officials made it easy for a man to get back on the street who later was involved in a shooting that could have had even more serious consequences.

Being a judge is a pretty good job. Are there no Democrats in DeKalb County willing to give it a shot?

Early voting at each of the sites will be open until Sunday. The hours are from 9 a.m. to noon today and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

From Monday through March 13, polls will be open at the same locations from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Without limbs, Menges re-learning domestic chores, family life

bkeeperman@shawmedia,com ROCKFORD – He keeps his arms in a black basket that hangs on the wall of his bedroom, alongside his old Genoa-Kingston jerseys.

“My arms aren’t fun to untangle, with all these cords and wires,” Ethan Menges said as he stood next to his electric wheelchair in his bedroom, while his 3-year-old nephew and 6-month-old black Labrador retriever rolled around the floor.

Menges, a 24-year-old Genoa-Kingston high school alumnus, is struggling to thrive as he navigates life as a quadruple amputee. He had been an athlete – captain of the Genoa-Kingston basketball and football teams, who also played baseball and ran track – and graduated in 2010 as class valedictorian.

He lost his limbs last year after a viral infection caused him to fall into a coma, during which he developed bed sores that caused a lack of blood flow to his arms and legs.

Menges is living with his sister, Brittney Menges, a roommate and two dogs – pit bull Tiny and black Labrador retriever Raffi, in Rockford as he plans his May wedding and looks for apartments for himself and future wife Jordon Mathieu, whom he said doesn’t quite approve of his habit of using his prostheses to alarm people.

“Whenever I have my hands on, I sometimes just sit there with them like this,” he said, smiling as he turned his prosthetic hand backwards.

“But I basically just learned to live without my arms. I mostly wear these when I am cooking in the kitchen or going out in public.”

The prosthetic hands are awkward and imprecise. He controls the grip by tensing his back muscles, which trigger the pull cords and release tension to open and close the hands. The fingers can’t move independently, however, which makes things like gripping doorknobs and meal prep difficult.

“I’m not particularly fond of these,” Menges said. “I am working to trying to get an electric arm through touch bionics.”

Electronic arms have a much wider variety of grips and can even be programmed through a smartphone app. Because they still are considered experimental, most insurance companies won’t cover the cost, Menges said.

Cooking is something Menges has been working at. He recently bought a adaptive cutting board, which helps stabilize things like apples and cucum-

bers so they don’t slip off the board while he tries to cut them. Still, it can take up to 15 minutes to slice up an apple and he frequently drops the knife

– a frustrating trend.

“I really don’t like breaking things,” he said.

Brittney Menges said she frequently gets texts throughout the day from her brother, warning of a broken plate, crockpot or turned over table.

“For him it’s like the end of the world, and he feels terrible about it,” Brittney Menges said. “But its like, ‘Dude, I have four crock-pots, don’t worry about it.’ ” Simple changes around the house do help, however. They keep their peanut butter, crackers and cereal in Tupperware containers, which are easier to open. Dycem rubber grips are wrapped around doorknobs, so they are easier to turn. He also is training puppy Raffi to be a service dog, although right now the dog is less than helpful.

“I mean, he runs around the house bringing things to me,” he said. “Like if I’m in the living room, he will bring me shoes and things from the bedroom.”

Post-sentence cases brought back to light DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office handling about 1 a month

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Although convicted felons from DeKalb County typically serve their sentences at state prisons, an increasing number seem to be pursuing avenues to reverse their convictions.

Different than an initial appeal to the appellate court, two popular routes – post-conviction relief petitions and relief from judgment petitions – allow the convicted to argue for a new trial because new evidence pertaining to their case has come to light, or because their rights were violated in court proceedings leading to their conviction.

In the 1970s, post-conviction relief petitions could be filed up to 20 years after a conviction. The statue was amended in the ’80s to permit filing only up to 10 years afterward and again in the ’90s to only three years after being convicted or six months after the courts’ decision on direct appeal. Although more than 10 years old, the amended statute has put inmates in a time crunch that has left court officials sifting through more post-conviction relief or relief from judgment cases than previous years, DeKalb County Public Defender Tom McCulloch said.

“Now they’ve got very tight limitations, people are filling them as a matter of course,” he said. “There’s more of them, plus they’re filing them sooner.”

It’s rare, however, for the petitions to be ruled upon in the inmates’ favor, and the detailed post-conviction process can strain court resources.

Officials at DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack’s office said they handle at least one such case a month.

“I think there’s a fair number [of wrongfully convicted], sure,” McCulloch said. “And I think there’s people

Convicts from DeKalb County who have filed post-conviction relief petitions include: Michael Greenwell – convicted of beating a man to death in 2009; and William Nally, Jr., convicted of murdering Joseph Brandt in 2002, to name two.

Often hand-written from prison, the petitions set in motion a tedious series of events for both the prosecutors and the public defenders, who must comb through the case’s documents, often for the first time, Schmack said.

“That again, I think is a necessary part of the process, but it can make it difficult for both the prosecution and

defense counsel that eventually get appointed to make their way through what the prisoner is trying to say,” Schmack said.

There have been 337 post-conviction DNA exonerations alone in the U.S., according to The Innocence Project, a New-York-based national litigation group. The average time served before a person is exonerated is 14 years in prison.

In Illinois, exonerees pardoned by the governor or who receive a certificate of innocence from the circuit court are eligible for financial compensation based on their time-served and a reimbursement of attorney’s fees up to 25 percent of the compensation award. The law also provides for job placement for exonerated people.

Although a majority of DeKalb County cases do not result in an overturned conviction, a person’s right to file petitions from prison is an important part of the legal system, Schmack said.

“It is extremely time consuming on the part of state’s attorneys and public defenders, and the conflict counsel, but it’s a necessary part of the system,” Schmack said.

In Cook County, Christopher Abernathy spent 28 years in prison after being convicted of the 1984 murder and rape of a 15-year-old girl, according to the National Registry of Exonerations. Abernathy was exonerated of his charges in February 2015, and the perpetrator was never found. He has yet to be compensated.

There are no DeKalb County exonerations listed on the National Registry of Exonerations, which records cases from 1989 to present.

“In the abstract it probably does have an affect [on time] but the post convictions are the ones that get pushed off the longest,” McCulloch said. “[The success rate] is probably low, but that isn’t to say they shouldn’t take a stab at it.”

After all, my husband Royce and I built our home together, raised a family, enjoyed our neighbors and spent time with good friends. Born: Jan. 20, 1937; in Belvidere, IL Died: March 2, 2016; in Kirkland, IL John F. Buell, age 79, of Kirkland, died Wednesday, March 2, 2016 in his home.

He was born January 20, 1937 in Belvidere, son of John and Olga (Alm) Buell.

He married Barbara Haines in Rockford on October 8, 1960. She passed away in 2010. John attended Genoa High School and graduated from Sycamore High in 1955. He served in the United States Army in Berlin, Germany. He was a member of the Berlin U.S. Military Veterans Association and attended their yearly reunions. If you saw John around town, he was probably wearing a blue “BUSMVA” jacket. He was also a founding member of Westminister Presbyterian Church in DeKalb, and member of the Kirkland Historical Society. John loved to fish and tell jokes. His distinctive laugh will always be remembered. He was able to fix anything, loved to “putter” and could often be heard whistling.

He is survived by daughters, Leigh Ann (David J.) Gombac of Sugarland, Texas and Mary (James A.) Marshall of Rockford; grandchildren, Rebecca and Andrew Gombac and Matthew, Katherine and Sarah Marshall; half-sister, Estelle (Richard) Ivanoff of Cedarville, Illinois, and several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara; step-father, William Reinmiller; brother, Kenneth Buell; and sister, Marjorie Harris.

Betty Ann (Clarner) Mathey, age 83, went to her Lord after a brief illness on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 surrounded by her loving family.

She was born July 16, 1932 in Clare to Edward and Eleanor (Shott) Clarner. She attended Sycamore schools, graduating in 1950. On June 16, 1951 she married Albert “Rabbit” Mathey.

Betty was a homemaker and along with her husband raised 5 sons. She enjoyed attending her son’s sporting events from Little League through high school and college. For many years, she excelled in bowling and was involved in various leagues where she held many officer positions. She loved to go dancing with relatives and often followed the band of her nephew, Craig. She was an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards with family and doing crossword puzzles.

She was a member of the VFW- Post 5768, Ladies Auxiliary and the Ladies of the Elks, Lodge 1392. During her later years, she

$1.5M in street repairs proposed for Sycamore DAILY CHRONICLE SYCAMORE – The Sycamore City Council will consider a proposed $1.5 million street maintenance program at its meeting Monday that calls for work on 10 streets, one alley and two parking lots.

The City Council will meet at 7 p.m.

Monday at City Hall, 308 W. State St., Sycamore.

The $1.5 million program is less extensive than the $2.2 million the city spent on street maintenance in fiscal 2016, City Engineer Mark Bushnell said.

Work is planned on Somonauk Street, from West Elm Street to West State Street; Mason Court (North of Loomis), from Loomis Street to north end of street; South California, from West High Street to Waterman Street; Edward Street, from Elmwood to Washington Place; North Maple, from West Exchange Street to West Page Street; Lucas and North Maple, from California Street to North Avenue; West Exchange, from North Cross Street to Sacramento Street; and East Ottawa, from South Main Street to South Walnut Street, ac-

cording to city documents.

The most intensive reconstruction work will be on Mason Court and Lucas and North Maple, Bushnell said.

Reconstruction of the alley between North Main Street and North Maple Street is also planned.

Pavement patching, crack filing and seal coating is planned for Parking Lot 1, at the Northwest Corner of Elm and Somonauk. Work will also be done at Parking Lot 2, at the southwest corner of Elm and Somonauk, city documents show.

Motor fuel tax funds will be used to repair portions of East Sycamore Street, from North Walnut Street to Sabin Street; and East Elm Street, from Governor Street to Kishwaukee Drive.

Bushnell said the streets were selected based, in part, on condition and input from Sycamore Public Works crews and the community.

If approved by the City Council, Bushnell said the city plans to award work contracts in April. Construction work would start sometime after that with the goal that all work be completed before the Pumpkin Festiva, which is held during the last weekend in October.

While the organization has slashed its budget to $70,000 from $130,000, the board still expects to come up about $35,000 short.

The organization plans to partner with the DeKalb Park District and other groups around the community to host fundraisers.

DeKALB – Feed’em Soup Community Project needs to fill a $35,000 hole in its budget in order to keep operating, an official with the organization said.

Feed’em Soup serves buffet-style meal services in DeKalb, on a pay-asyou-can basis. Already they have reduced dinner services from three times a week to once a week because of budget constraints.

Now the loss of a catering client has them faced with closure, Josh Akers, co-founder and vice-president of the organization said.

“We generate our revenues through services like catering,” Akers said.

“Catering pretty much keeps the lights on.”

The organization recently lost a big client, Phi Sigma Kappa at Northern Illinois University. Feed’em Soup used to cater lunch and dinner five days a week for the fraternity, which paid $2,000 weekly. The $70,000 in annual revenue was 54 percent of Feed’em Soup’s budget.

The district operated at about a $1 million budget deficit in its past fiscal year. The deficit is projected to grow to about $1.4 million in fiscal 2017, which began March 1. The budget shows spending of $8.8 million and revenue of $7.3 million.

The park district had about $4 million cash on hand to start the fiscal year.

Young said board members came to a consensus to put Mangum on leave and hadn’t taken any official vote yet.

He declined to comment on why the board placed Mangum on leave.

Mangum couldn’t be reached for comment Friday. In an email shortly after he was placed on leave, he said that park board members were trying to decide whether they would offer him a new contract. He didn’t mention he was placed on leave.

DeKALB – Band boosters at DeKalb High School are hosting a fundraiser to help the Marching Barbs raise money for their 2017 trip to Ireland.

“Going for Green” will begin at 5:30 p.m. today at the school, 501 W. Dresser Road, Entertainment, light dinner, a raffle and silent auction will take place.

The high school’s a cappella group, jazz band and string ensemble will perform.

Police investigate armed robbery at Motel 6 in Sycamore

SYCAMORE – Police are investigating a robbery reported Thursday night at Motel 6, 1860 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore.

Sycamore police were called to the motel about 9:50 p.m. Thursday for a report of an armed robbery. Police said a man with a gun entered the motel lobby. No one was in the lobby at the time and the suspect jumped over the counter and took an undisclosed amount of cash, according to a news release from the Sycamore Police Department.

The suspect was wearing a white hoodie, dark pants and blue shoes. The man left and got into a light colored SUV, which was last seen northbound on Peace Road, the release said.

DeKALB – The executive director of the DeKalb Park District is on paid administrative leave, and officials are tight-lipped about why.

Park board members plan to consider a contract with Jason Mangum again at their March 17 meeting, DeKalb Park District Board Chairman Phil Young said.

Mangum was hired under a twoyear contract in May 2014 with an annual salary of $116,000. In 2016, the district budgeted $119,500 for his position plus benefits, park district documents show.

Young said Friday Jason that the board placed Mangum Mangum on administrative leave Feb. 24, but said members haven’t made a final decision on whether or not to fire the director.

“He is paid through this time,” Young said. “It’s just administrative leave. By next meeting, we will have something more definite.”

In the meantime, the board is looking to hire an interim leader for the district, DeKalb Park Commissioner Dag Grada said. Asked if Mangum would return to lead the park district, Grada declined to comment.

“We’re trying to get a park district that works,” he said.

Grada said he’d had a “mixed experience” with Mangum’s leadership.

Lisa Small, a longtime employee who was the park district’s superintendent of finance, left her position in late 2015. This week, the park board approved a separation agreement with Small, but Grada said he didn’t know the terms of the agreement offhand. Smalls’ departure was unrelat-

New band uniforms considered in Kaneland

School board gives officials approval to seek bids

alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Kaneland’s school board this week provided a green light for School District 302 officials to seek public bids for the purchase of new marching band uniforms.

The board vote was unanimous, but the action was not an approval for the new uniforms. A vote on that would come after district officials receive bids and provide details to board members.

Denise Blaszynski, president of the Kaneland Performing Arts Boosters, stated in an email that the marching band “is desperately in need of new uniforms.”

“The current uniforms are between 10 and 15 years old, many with rips, tears or simply worn out,” Blaszynski wrote. “Thanks to the outstanding leadership of [band director] Aaron Puckett, the band program has grown tremendously in recent years and

won’t have enough uniforms for next year’s marching band. The Kaneland Performing Arts Boosters will be contributing a portion of the funds toward the purchase of the new uniforms.”

Associate Superintendent Julie-Ann Fuchs provided estimates on what the purchase would cost and how the district intends to pay for the uniforms. The cost is anticipated to be about $70,000 for 150 uniforms. Fuchs stated in an email that the cost of one uniform is about $460.

According to documents provided by district officials, $40,000 of the cost would be covered by delaying the purchase of large instruments. Also, the district would delay the purchase of a vehicle that would replace one currently used for driver’s education. The Kaneland Performing Arts Boosters would be asked to contribute $3,500.

“I do appreciate that we are trying to move things around and keep the numbers down,” school board member Ryan Kerry said.

Probe finds no secret wait lists 1 at VA hospital

The Associated Press CHICAGO – An internal watchdog for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs found patients faced delays accessing care at a suburban Chicago veterans’ hospital, but its report uncovered no evidence supporting a whistleblower’s claim of a scheme to hide the long wait times.

The VA’s Office of Inspector General is releasing reports on its investigations at dozens of veterans’ facilities across the country over the next few months after pressure from members of Congress to improve transparency. Some of the other reports detail falsified records covering up the long waits. Intentional misconduct was substantiated in 51 of 77 completed investigations.

The report on the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital, just west of Chicago, was released Thursday, although it was completed in January 2015.

It uncovered no evidence to support the whistleblower’s claims that secret patient wait lists were used to hide long waits for treatment so supervisors would get bonuses.

It did find that appointment schedulers, responding to direction from supervisors, made changes in a computer system that reduced the appearance of patient wait times. But it did not determine that data was manipulated intentionally to make the numbers look better.

Investigators’ interviews with employees revealed uncertainty about how appointment data was supposed to be logged in “antiquated confusing scheduling software.” As a result, some of the data changes appeared meant to fix genuine clerical errors, the report said.

Some employees told investigators that separate spreadsheets with appointment data had to be kept because the official software was so limiting, but they were not secret lists, as alleged.

U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk has been especially critical of the Hines hospital and the VA in general. He rejected the report’s findings, citing a review by the U.S. Office of Special Counsel that called the investigation inadequate.

Kirk, who is chairman of the Senate Appropriations subcommittee that oversees funding for the VA, first brought attention to Hines during a scandal over veterans’ health care that emerged nearly two years ago after complaints that as many as 40 patients died while awaiting care at a VA hospital in Phoenix.

“At the hearing I held last year, whistleblowers from Hines, Phoenix and Louisiana said nothing had changed – the culture of corruption still thrives at their hospitals and veterans wait months and years for appointments, often dying as they wait,” Kirk said in a statement Friday.

Kirk also sent a letter to Deputy Inspector General Linda Halliday expressing concern at how the investigation was handled and demanding the release of all investigation documents and supporting material.

The investigation at Hines included interviews with staff and a review of 245,000 emails. None of the emails pointed to an intentional falsification of wait time data.

News from across the state Online sales set to expire for Illinois Lottery tickets

SPRINGFIELD – The state could miss out on funding if lawmakers don’t take action on a test program that allows Illinois Lottery tickets to be sold online before it expires March 25.

The state likely will lose out on money for education and construction projects unless the measure to make online lottery sales permanent moves in the House, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Lawmakers aren’t scheduled to return to the Capitol until April 4.

Since Illinois became the first state to sell lottery tickets online in 2012, online ticket sales have brought in $68 million for education and construction projects, lottery spokesman Steve Rossi said.

The amount the state stands to lose will depend on how long the program is inactive. But Republican state Rep. Ed Sullivan of Mundelein, who’s sponsoring the bill to make online sales permanent, said the state can’t afford to lose any money amid the state budget crisis.

Alvarez asks for help on child support enforcement

CHICAGO – Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez has asked a federal court to force the state of Illinois to pay $18 million the county says it’s owed for a child support enforcement program.

A Friday statement from her office said the action is a response to the state budget impasse in Springfield that’s left Illinois without a budget for fiscal 2016.

The 13-page motion to intervene was filed this week in a related case dating back to 1992. It led to a consent decree on state payments. A hearing on the motion is set for March 17.

Alvarez argues the state and the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services haven’t reimbursed the money it costs to operate the program.

Sanders’ message resonates at SIU

EDWARDSVILLE – Sen. Bernie Sanders’ call for free higher education is resonating on an Illinois college campus facing deep cuts in state funding amid an eight-month budget impasse.

The Democratic presidential candidate spoke Friday morning at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, where the primarily student audience packed a 4,000seat campus basketball arena, including on the gym floor and outer hallways.

Sanders touched on familiar campaign themes, calling for campaign finance reform, marijuana decriminalization and increased corporate taxes.

Southern Illinois is among the schools that have had to front scholarship money to students to cover expenses in the current school year. The Illinois governor and lawmakers remain unable to agree on a budget for the fiscal year that began in July 2015.

Illinois boosts incentives for federal spy agency site

MASCOUTAH – The state of Illinois agreed Friday to commit an additional $60 million in road projects and for public transportation to help lure a federal spy agency considering a move from its longtime home near downtown St. Louis.

Gov. Bruce Rauner disclosed the new commitment after a private meeting with National Geospatial Intelligence Agency Director Robert Cardillo at the St. Clair County site near Scott Air Force Base. U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk and other state and federal elected officials also participated.

The added incentives, which the governor said as capital improvement projects can be promised despite a state budget impasse now in its ninth month, come as neighboring Missouri similarly jostles for the coveted $1.6 billion federal project.

Company faces fines for lost radioactive device

SPRINGFIELD – A radioactive container that went missing last fall hasn’t been found, Illinois Emergency Management Agency officials said, and they want the company that lost it to pay $25,500 in penalties.

Authorities started searching for the container in Illinois and Indiana in October after Wayne County Well Surveys Inc. of Fairfield notified the agency that it couldn’t locate the “radioactive well logging source holder.” It contains americium, a highly radioactive metal.

On Thursday, the Agency said it issued a preliminary order seeking to impose the $25,500 penalty on the southeastern Illinois company. IEMA licenses the company’s possession and use of the device.

Progress toward commercial kitchen, food hub Thumbs-up: To progress toward a food hub and commercial kitchen in DeKalb. Our county is mostly farmland, and we’d love to have access to more locally grown produce. That’s why plans for a food hub and commercial kitchen using produce grown within a 50-mile radius of DeKalb are so intriguing. At the DeKalb County Board’s Economic Development Committee meeting this week, project leader Dan Kenney said the project was on track for a potential summer 2017 opening. In addition to the environmental benefits to “eating local,” there’s also a multimillion-dollar market that can be tapped.

Thumbs-up: To a shared reading experience.

Throughout March, Sycamore School District 427 elementary-schoolers are expected to read a chapter a day from “The World According to Humphrey,” by Betty G. Birney. The students are reading the book along with their parents and siblings, and district employees are reading it, too. Local businesses including Shawn’s Coffee Shop and Polka Dot Bakery are getting into the fun by creating special Humphrey-themed cookies. “What we’re really trying to do is create a community of readers,” West Elementary Principal Kristi Crawford said. The annual bowling fundraiser to benefit DeKalb County’s Big Brothers Big Sisters program rolled out on Thursday and continues through Sunday at Mardi Gras Lanes in DeKalb. The Family Service Agency, the umbrella nonprofit agency that operates the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, has a fundraising goal of $55,000 to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters, which helps pair local children with positive role models. There is still time to participate – bowlers can register ahead of time at FSADeKalbCounty.org, and be part of a group of four or more teammates, with a minimum of $75 raise per person. We hope that the fundraising goal is met for this worthwhile cause.

On Wednesday, Montgomery, Alabama, police officer Aaron Smith, 23, was charged with murder in the shooting death of 58-year-old Greg Gunn, a black man, outside the home of one of Gunn’s neighbors. Police said Smith thought Gunn was suspicious and approached him on foot before shooting him to death. We appreciate the work that honest and brave law enforcement officers perform on a daily basis, but are growing tired of the stories of police shooting innocent people to death.

There are words for Trump, ‘conservative’ not one

To the Editor: I have one question for Donald Trump, the candidate for the GOP Presidential nomination.

“In your business dealings involving the casino industry, how did you deal with the mafia (criminal) element?”

We all know (and don’t deny it) that the criminal element plays a huge role in that business, along with so many other so-called “legitimate businesses” (don’t deny that either, if you do, you are a fool.)

Donald Trump is a prime example of morality gone astray. This individual portrays the real reason why the moral fiber of our society is slipping away.

We are all sinners, but this guy has the gall to think he is perfection. He is no conservative. He is as liberal or more so than any prospective candidate.

He admits, “I can be whatever you want me to be.” That’s a prostitute, folks. No different than that, any way you cut it.

To those who support the gambling at Shabbona, please think of the message you send to the children. For God’s sake, wake up!

If you need money that bad, get a real job. Don’t sell your soul for a few shillings.

This is a vital election year for the country. That’s why Illinois voters should press the reset button on the Republican nomination process.

Trump’s candidacy is rooted in negativity and preys on the understandable anger of frustrated voters.

We understand why voters would welcome a candidate from outside traditional political channels, but Trump is not the answer. He is that angry email you want to send but really shouldn’t. He is that nasty phone message you want to leave but will always regret.

Trump is a bully who’s more apt to name-call and belittle than to discuss policy in any detail. He offers little in the way of substance or leadership. His plan to build a 1,000-milelong wall along the Mexican border

that’s at least 30 feet tall or taller to keep illegal immigrants out of the U.S., and also to have Mexico pay for it – his most specific policy message, by the way – is, well, laughable.

And let’s face it. Trump isn’t a true Republican. He’s supported liberals and liberal causes throughout his career.

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas also is not the answer. As is Trump, Cruz is a divider, not a uniter. A far-rightwing conservative, Cruz cannot attract the independent voters needed to win a general election against the Democratic nominee. He is beholden to big oil and among the staunchest deniers of the science of climate change.

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio has the best chance to unite the party and lead it in a new direction. He was elected to the Senate as a tea-party candidate but also has worked close-

ly with members of the Republican establishment. The son of Cuban immigrants, Rubio can expand the party’s base among Latinos.

Rubio is a policy wonk who focuses on solutions rather than problems. He delivers an uplifting message about America’s potential and is an advocate for smaller government – he would reduce all federal spending to 2008 levels except for defense. He supports overhauling what he calls America’s outdated educational system, including increasing vocational training. He supports some sort of legal status for undocumented workers, but only after U.S. borders are secure. He wants to reform the federal tax code and cap economic regulations.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich also also remains in the race.

We endorse Rubio for the Republican nomination for U.S. President.

Government rules are regulating the future Government pretends it’s the cause of progress. Then it strangles innovation.

We know government understands that new technologies are important.

The military invests in robots and traffic cops use radar guns. But when the rest of us use robots or fly drones, government gets eager to put rules in place before things get “out of control.”

When it’s hard to innovate in the U.S., innovation happens elsewhere.

The Japanese already offer largely automated hotels. At the Henn-na (or “Weird”) Hotel, the front desk clerk is a robot dinosaur – popular with the kids. Another robot stores your luggage, and another takes you to your room.

This may sound like an expensive stunt, but the robot hotel is cheaper than others nearby – partly because it employs fewer people.

That alarms politicians who fear change. Whenever there’s been innovation, experts predict massive unemployment. They react to what they see. Fewer receptionists work at that Japanese hotel. Military robots will replace soldiers, and self-driving cars will take away delivery people’s jobs. Often politicians pass rules to stop this “job destruction.”

VIEWS John Stossel But the more efficiently we can do things, the more human energy is free to be turned toward the unseen, tasks we haven’t even thought of yet, but which may be more pleasant to do, and these jobs will create new opportunities.

If we crushed every machine that did things humans used to do, we’d still be living in caves and hunting tigers with spears. Every time there’s a new invention, some people lose jobs, and there’s a period of adjustment.

But we come out ahead.

You don’t believe employment recovers? Remember that 200 years ago, 90 percent of Americans worked on farms. Now fewer than 2 percent do. But that doesn’t mean that 90 percent of the population has been left unemployed.

“We saw the car displacing horses, buggies and buggy whips, but we don’t lament that passage, do we?” said Max Borders, author of “Superwealth.”

“The blacksmiths of old had to

figure out something else to do,” observes Borders. “They all found jobs. The economy evolves. It’s an evolving ecosystem.”

Some don’t want it to evolve. Cab drivers and their unions demand that government protect their jobs from competition by ride-hailing services such as Uber.

But if government stepped in to protect jobs, we’d be stuck with the jobs and industries of the past, millions of buggy-whip makers and all those extra farmers.

I think we’re better off celebrating new ways of doing things – and the inventors and entrepreneurs who keep thinking them up. That gives us choices that are “better, faster, cheaper and cooler,” Borders said.

But today, with America’s ever-increasing regulation, it’s often tougher to create new things. Uber offers obviously better and safer service, but to succeed it has to overcome protests and break government rules.

“It was legally questionable,” says Borders, “but people did it anyway.”

Uber thrived only because it grew popular and rich before the politicians and regulators noticed. By then, Uber had millions of customers and billions of dollars, so they could bully politicians back.

In New York City, Uber defeated my anti-progress mayor by telling its customers: Waiting too long for a car? Blame the politicians.

We are better off because Uber won, but the battles continue. Some airports, to protect their taxi monopolies, recently banned Uber.

Uber is fortunate that its most important innovation is just an app on phones. It didn’t need to first get government permission to create that.

Donald Trump enters Illinois’ March 15 primary as the clear front runner for the GOP nomination for president.

He’s dominated most of the primaries and caucuses to date, and has significant leads over his rivals in national polling.

While he’s in a strong position, Trump, a billionaire real estate tycoon and reality TV star, still is no guarantee to secure the nomination.

DeKalb surrenders late lead ‘Disappointing’ end to 25-win season

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SOUTH ELGIN – A 16-game winning streak, a home tournament championship and a number of personal milestones highlighted the DeKalb boys basketball team’s regular season.

But the postseason ended Friday after only two games as the Barbs lost to Jacobs, 54-48, in overtime in the Class 4A South Elgin Regional championship game.

“That’s the disappointing thing – I thought we had a wonderful season,” DeKalb coach Al Biancalana said. “The kids really played at a very high level for most of the year, we had a really long winning streak. But when things got a little bit tough, we couldn’t come up with the play. We couldn’t make the play when we needed to.”

The Barbs (25-5) trailed most of the game but surged in the third quarter, eventually taking a 36-35 lead on a steal and layup by Cole Tucker with 5:18 left in the game. They tied the score at 37 after Robert Mitchell made the front end of a 1-and-1 with 4:33 left, but Michael Pollack came up with the offensive rebound.

It kicked off a stretch in which the Barbs had chance after chance to score and kept stopping the Eagles (23-6) on the defensive end, but couldn’t get the

“I’m really disappointed because we shot ourselves in the foot,” Biancalana said. “We made the run in the fourth quarter, we got five defensive stops and turned the ball over four of those times when we got it back. We made really bad passing decisions.

We made some bad shot decisions. We just struggled so much to try to do the right thing and it came back to bite us.”

Jacobs scored with 1:54 left to take a 39-37 lead and had a chance to pad it, but 6-foot-9 center Cameron Krutwig missed the front end of a 1-and-1, which would have given him 1,000 points for his career.

Tucker got the rebound and drove down the court for a layup and the tie with 39.4 seconds left. The Eagles ran the clock down, getting the ball to Krutwig in the lane, but 6-7 DeKalb center Luke Davis got the block and the rebound, with Pollack missing a half-court shot at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

“We really clamped down on defense,” Jacobs coach Jimmy Roberts said. “Our kids did a good job of recognizing some of the stuff they got to and we clamped down defensively.”

The Barbs never led in overtime, with the Eagles opening the extra frame on an 11-3 spurt. DeKalb got to within four with 48.4 seconds left, but the Eagles made their free throws down the stretch – including Krutwig, who eventually reached the 1,000-point mark and finished with 18 points and 15 rebounds.

“That game should have never gone into overtime,” Biancalana said. “It’s

The teams each made 19 field goals in the game, but Jacobs took 15 fewer shots, outshooting the Barbs 53 percent to 37 percent.

Davis finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Pollack had 15 points and Tucker had 14 for DeKalb.

“We missed a lot of layups, we turned the ball over, we missed free throws. You just can’t do that in a regional championship,” Biancalana said. “We didn’t show enough toughness inside against Krutwig and it came back to bite us a little bit.”

MAPLE PARK – In a back-andforth game that came down to the final seconds, Kaneland made a few more plays in critical moments to beat Sycamore, 44-40, and win the Class 3A Kaneland Regional championship game Friday night.

Sycamore (15-12) and Kaneland (20-8) were neck-and-neck from start to finish in a matchup between the two Northern Illinois Big 12 teams, and Sycamore coach Andrew Stacy complimented Kaneland on its clutch play down the stretch.

“I’m extremely proud of our guys and they’ve come a long way this year,” Stacy said. “I thought we did a great job executing the game plan, but we just came up a little bit short tonight. You have to credit Kaneland, though. They made a few more plays down the stretch and that was a big difference in this game.”

Kaneland will play Rockford Boylan Catholic in a Class 3A Woodstock North Sectional semifinal at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The Knights began to find their rhythm in the second quarter to tie the score at 18 heading into halftime. Kaneland opened the game by turning the ball over five times, including on its first possession.

Kaneland’s top scorers were Dylan Vaca, who scored 14 points, followed by Ryan David (10).

Kaneland coach Joe Conroy said adjustments at halftime made a big difference.

“We just talked about what they were doing defensively,” Conroy said. “Andrew Stacy is a great coach, and he made some really good adjustments in the game

• Kaneland advances to play Boylan Catholic at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a Woodstock North Sectional semifinal and we talked about that. We’ve played them two times already and we weren’t going to let them do the same thing. Defensively, we feel like we didn’t have the intensity and we didn’t run people off their shots. We knew we just had to get out and guard, otherwise we knew we were going to be resting a lot by the end of the night.”

Sycamore had its chances in the final minutes of the game.

Ty Sulaver hit two field goals to tie the score at 31 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter and a 3-pointer to bring the Spartans within two points as Kaneland held a 40-38 lead with 1:26 left.

Sycamore’s leading scorers were Brett Bemis, who had nine points, and Tim Zahm (eight).

Fighting to keep its season alive, a Sycamore turnover was the final straw with 6.7 seconds left and down by four.

“I’m really thrilled with my team and the seniors,” Conroy said. “These kids have been working their whole lives for this and to have the opportunity to beat a good team like Sycamore on our own court in front of our friends and family was unbelievable.”

In the final minute of the win over Ball State, Montgomery subbed out his two seniors – Baker and Iroegbu.

Iroegbu was a junior college transfer, and Baker has spent all four seasons with the Huskies, including a 5-25 season in 2012-13. “(He’s been through) the good, the bad and the ugly, I’m just so proud of him,” Montgomery said of Baker, who is the all-time leader in games played (123) and steals (178). “I told him that I got choked up [Friday] when we had a team meeting. You always cherish your seniors because they made it through a long journey.

“Tray Baker is so important to NIU because he’s never missed a game, he’s never missed a practice, he’s been a model citizen. He has a lot of records here. ... To go from five wins to 20 wins, it means a lot.”

The win over Ball State (19-12, 10-8 MAC West) also continued the Huskies’ dominance at home this season, going 17-1 overall and 8-1 in conference play.

DeKALB – Maybe the Northern Illinois men’s basketball team should have taken its free throws from the 3-point line.

The Huskies were on target from deep in an 80-69 win over Ball State on Friday night at the NIU Convocation Center, giving them 20 wins in a season for the first time since 1995-96.

“I am just so proud of the guys because they are one of not many teams to get 20 wins at this university and it’s a big step in the right direction,” NIU coach Mark Montgomery said of the Huskies’ fourth 20-win season in school history.

The Huskies (20-11 overall, 9-9 in Mid-American Conference West) will host Western Michigan (13-18, 7-11 MAC West) in the first round of the MAC tour-

nament at 7 p.m. Monday in DeKalb.

Against the Cardinals, NIU finished 14 for 24 (58 percent) from behind the 3-point arc, including 7 for 10 in the second half. At the foul line, the Huskies were only 6 for 14 (43 percent).

“I should have told those guys to step back and shoot a 3 – I’m just kidding,” Montgomery said laughed.

NIU junior guard Aaric Armstead led five Huskies in double-figures with 14 points and seven rebounds, freshman center Levi Bradley had 13 points, senior guard Chuks Iroegbu scored 12 and freshman Marshawn Wilson and senior Travon Baker each added 11 in the win.

The Huskies were without sophomore big man Marin Maric, who injured his right ankle in the second half of the 75-71 loss at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday. Montgomery said Maric is day-to-day and is wearing a boot on his injured foot.

However, the Huskies showed they can win without Maric, who is averaging 12.3 points and 8.5 rebounds a game.

“When you come in a little short-handed not having Marin, ... you don’t sleep as easy at night,” Montgomery said. “But I thought we

The Buccaneers stretched the lead in the third, and went into the fourth quarter with a 47-40 lead. But multiple fouls and mental mistakes led to the Cogs pulling back into the game.

A clutch 3-pointer by Brady Huffman

and two free throws by Lucca late in the game made it 56-53, but crucial free throws by Belvidere’s Eric Munoz and Austin Revolinski put the game on ice for the Bucs.

“Revolinski has carried us in this regional,” Belvidere coach Aaron Pearson said. “But it was a team effort tonight.”

Lucca finished with 36 points, which included hitting 16-of-18 free throws, for the Cogs (20-10). Six players scored for the Cogs. The Bucs were led

by Deante Barnes, who had 19 points, 11 of which came in the fourth quarter.

Revolinski finished with 13, and Nate Horton added 10.

“Nate Horton had some quality minutes for us off the bench,” Pearson said.

“His steal in the fourth quarter was a big moment in the game. Also, most people don’t talk about Will Morris’ defense, but he really locked down versus Marengo and again tonight.”

The Bucs will go on to the Woodstock North Sectional, where they will face Glenbard South, the winner of the Glenbard South Regional.

The Evansville baseball team broke a tie game with three runs in the seventh inning to beat Northern Illinois, 5-2, in the series opener Friday in Evansville, Indiana.

NIU reliever Donovin Sims took the loss, allowing three runs in five innings for the Huskies (1-8). Tommy Hook and Johnny Zubek each went 2 for 3 for the Huskies, and Luke Yapp was 2 for 4 with two runs. Zubek and Brandon Mallder each had an RBI in the loss.

“The margin for victory is so small that you have to be locked in for all 27 outs and take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way,” NIU coach Mike Kunigonis said.

Grable homers in softball win

Former NFLer inspires alma mater at school assembly

kdruley@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Kaneland alumnus Don Beebe, one of three NFL players to appear in six Super Bowls, delivered an all-school assembly address at his alma mater Thursday afternoon.

It was the final item on Kaneland’s agenda before a three-day weekend, so some of the program inevitably intersected with teenage angst, even though a golden football was involved.

As the guest of honor reminded the student body of its potential to emerge from a small, partially rural community to achieve something in any field, several audience members rapidly internalized the message. Sophomore Matthew Olson, a would-be Beebe?

“It’s pretty cool that a guy from

on in the backyard. It was always fun.

The guys, when we were growing up in Sugar Grove, we would play all the time. But for some reason, organized football … .”

On Thursday, Beebe and a cast of family, friends and former coaches hailed his nine-year NFL career as a receiver and its legacy. Beebe accepted a commemorative golden anniversary football he received as part of the NFL’s salute to its 50th Super Bowl last month, memorabilia that will be displayed at Kaneland.

The man who appeared in Super Bowls four times as a Buffalo Bill and twice as a Green Bay Packer knew the gesture was coming. A trick play during Thorgesen’s introductory speech, however, brought Beebe to joyful tears.

Saluting Beebe’s humility and endearing recognition of his roots and alma mater, Thorgesen presented Beebe with a duplicate of the No. 22 football jersey he wore during his prep career, complete with the schools’ bygone hints of orange. Thorgesen then told the crowd no Knights football

player ever would wear the number again.

Beebe called the jersey retirement “the greatest reward” of his football career at any level. At the end of his remarks, he presented his own jersey to Kaneland, the one he wore for the Packers in Super Bowl XXXII. “I thought I was going to surprise them with my jersey, and here they surprised me with the jersey and the retirement of the number,” Beebe said.

Beebe donned No. 22 as a nod to his older sisters, Beth and Diane, who took a shine to it during their developmental sports days. The siblings kept the tradition at Kaneland along with Beebe’s younger brothers, Dan and Dave.

Another athlete at Beebe’s first collegiate stop, Western Illinois, already had No. 22, so he took No. 5, which he also wore at Chadron State in Nebraska.

Beebe wore No. 82 in 116 games with the Bills, Packers and Carolina Panthers for an elementary reason: The Bills selected him 82nd overall in the third round of the 1989 NFL Draft.

How to prevent ear pain on planes Dear Dr. K: I get pain in my ears every time I fly and the plane descends for landing. A friend says chewing gum works for him, but it doesn’t work for me. What can I do?

Dear Reader: The ear pain you experience –barotrauma of the ear – is the most common medical problem reported by air travelers. “Barotrauma” refers to injuries caused by increased air pressure.

Here’s why it happens. Your ear has three parts: the outer ear (including the ear canal), the middle ear and the inner ear. The eardrum comes between the outer ear and the middle ear. The middle ear is connected to the uppermost part of your throat (called the nasopharynx) by a thin canal called the Eustachian tube. Air constantly is moving through the Eustachian tube and into the middle ear. This balances the pressures in your middle and inner ears.

Air pressure changes as the altitude changes. Therefore, the biggest changes occur when a plane is taking off or landing. While the plane has systems to reduce the sudden changes that occur during takeoff and landing, some still occur.

When a plane’s air pressure changes suddenly and the Eustachian tube is blocked, it can create a vacuum in the middle ear that pulls the eardrum inward. This can cause pain. It also can muffle sounds. In more severe cases, the middle ear can fill with clear fluid. In the most severe cases, the eardrum can rupture. Fortunately, this is rare.

Barotrauma is much more likely if you’re flying with a cold, infection or allergies. That’s because these conditions can block the Eustachian tube.

So that’s what causes the problem you asked about. Now, what can you do about

First, take a decongestant one hour before your flight or use a decongestant nasal spray, or both. Since your ear problems come when the plane is landing, use the spray about 30 minutes before the plane is scheduled to land. Antihistamines may also help if you have allergies.

If you experience the symptoms of barotrauma during a flight, try the following before the symptoms worsen.

For most people, landing is worse than takeoff. The easiest tricks to try are: • Suck on hard candy.

• Yawn and swallow frequently. Open your mouth very wide, as if you were yawning. Swallow, even though there’s nothing in your throat to swallow. When you do this, you tighten the muscles in the back of your throat. That tugs on the opening of the Eustachian tube and opens it. You often can feel and hear the tube pop open.

If these methods don’t work, pinch your nose closed, inhale through your mouth, and then try to push the air out through your nose while keeping it pinched shut. Don’t push hard, and stop as soon as one ear pops. If you blow too hard, you can tear your eardrums, so do it carefully.

One of these tricks should work for most people who have ear problems while flying – and I’ll bet one will work for you.

Dear Abby: My DEAR ABBY wife and I have been married 20 Jeanne years and have Phillips three children, ages 10 to 17. Our oldest is a senior in high school. Her best friend, “Maya,” is a friend of the family we have known for 10 years. Maya’s parents have been divorced for as long as we’ve known her. She lives with her single mom. Her dad moved out of state.

Maya spends a lot of time with us on weekends, and we all have embraced her as another family member. Recently, Maya pulled me aside and asked if I could be a father figure in her life.

I was honored and immediately agreed. Now when she comes over she calls me “Dad” and even says “I love you.” I say it back.

Last week, my wife mentioned our younger two children have noticed the bond between me and Maya and are upset about it. How can I be there for Maya through these tough teen years without alienating my own younger kids? –

But they still analyze -- draw deductions from what has happened. In this deal, the original South, who thought he was an expert, lost two club tricks after reaching an incorrect conclusion.

In six spades, South started with 11 top tricks: five spades, five hearts and one diamond. He was faced with guessing the club suit for the 12th winner.

He won the heart lead with dummy’s queen, drew trumps in three rounds, and ran the hearts, discarding three clubs from the dummy.

Then, after a diamond to the ace and a diamond ruff, the evil moment had arrived. When he led a low club toward the dummy, what should declarer have done, or was it a guess?

At the time, South claimed that it was a guess; that West would always play low smoothly. The latter comment was right, but it was not a guess.

West’s lead was known to have been a singleton. He would not have chosen that card looking at an ace, because he would have known that his partner could not have a speedy entry to deliver a heart ruff. So South should have played dummy’s club jack, which would have pulled out the ace and let the slam make.
