Surprise someone, write a letter POLL

The “5 things to do this weekend” column in this week’s A&E section mentioned that this was National Write a Letter of Appreciation Week.

That’s actually a pretty good thing to have people try to do in a week. Since the week isn’t over and the post office will still pick up mail on Saturdays, you’ve still got time to write a letter and mail it to somebody. The person you write to will probably be surprised to even be receiving a personal letter in the first place, let alone one thanking them. Try it. You’ll make somebody’s day.

In that spirit, I’d like to thank some people who rarely are singled out for praise: • Bartenders and wait staff: Sometimes at the end of a long week, I can really use a beer, and you hard-working men and women are there for me.

• Sanitation workers: You folks are underappreciated. Thanks for disposing of all the stuff I don’t want to deal with any more, whether it’s dirty diapers, old flooring, or beat up old furniture.

• Honest mechanics and contractors: Customers know when you deal with us fairly,

U.S. SEEKS END TO YELLOWSTONE GRIZZLY PROTECTIONS

SYCAMORE – Residents can vote early at five locations throughout the county, including the DeKalb Township building.

Voting equipment was delivered Feb. 26 to the DeKalb County Legislative Center, 200 N. Main St., Sycamore; DeKalb Township Building, 2323 S. Fourth St., DeKalb; Northern Illinois University Holmes Student Center, Kirkland Village Hall, 511 W. Main St., Kirkland; and the Sandwich Fire Station, 310 E. Railroad St., Sandwich.

Early voting at each of the sites will be open until Sunday.

The hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today; 9 a.m. to noon Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

BILLINGS, Mont. – The federal government is proposing to lift threatened-species protections for hundreds of Yellowstone-area grizzlies, opening the door to future hunts for the fearsome bears across parts of three states for the first time since the 1970s.

The proposal caps a four-decade, government-sponsored effort to rebuild the grizzly population and follows the lifting of protections in recent years for more than a dozen other species, including the gray wolf, brown pelican and flying squirrel.

Hunting within Yellowstone National Park would still be prohibited. But the proposal could allow animals to be taken in surrounding parts of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming.

DeKalb County bowls for Big Brothers Big Sisters

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Local bowlers had time to spare Thursday for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

DeKalb County’s Family Service Agency kicked off Bowling for Kids’ Sake on Thursday at Mardi Gras Lanes in DeKalb, where teams of donors gathered to help fund the county’s Big Brothers Big Sisters program. This year the organization hopes to raise $55,000 to help pair local children with positive role models, Big Brothers Big Sisters Director Jenée Jeanblanc said. “The goal of those relationships is not only to provide support and friendship, but also to start addressing things like academic success, educational goals and their aspirations, and also decreasing the instances of their participation in risky behaviors.”

The fundraiser will continue through Sunday in DeKalb. Family Service Agency will host an additional fundraiser from 4 and 6 p.m., March 26 at Idle Hour Lanes, 927 E. Railroad Street, Sandwich. Bowlers are asked to register ahead of time at Fsadekalbcounty.org and be part of a group of four or more teammates, with a minimum of $75-raised per person.

“All of the money that is raised at this event stays local,” Jeanblanc said.

Bowling for Kids’ Sake includes one free game, shoe rental and a fundraiser T-shirt.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of DeKalb County has matched 1,100 kids with mentors and has a waiting list of children to be paired. Emily Nelson and her coworkers from First National Bank came out Thursday to support Big Brothers Big Sisters, after spending the past few weeks raising money for the cause.

“I think youth can sometimes get neglected, so I think it’s important to have organizations that kind of take the reigns on focusing on their needs,” she said.

Big Brothers Big Sister Lunch Buddy Gretchen Sprinkle has spent the past year eating lunch with a 9-yearold girl who thinks the world of her. So she knows from experience how much of an impact 45 minutes of volunteering can have.

“The whole basis behind our Big Brothers Big Sisters program is that we believe every child deserves some-

one that believes in them,” Sprinkle said. “These are kids that might not have a lot of friends at school or they just don’t have a lot of self confidence, and having an adult that’s not a family member say, ‘You matter and you’re important to me,’ just really means the world to them.”

Anyone interested in contributing a donation but is unable to make it to the fundraiser can sign up as a “virtual bowler” and collect pledges from home. All proceeds are used help fund

the child-and-mentor pairing process, and support the relationship throughout the year.

“It’s important to kind of build that self esteem up in the youth of this

county to help them be successful later on, make them want to graduate high school and go to college, or go to a trade school and make something of themselves,” Sprinkle said.

DeKALB – Plans for a food hub that could include produce from farmers in a 50-mile radius of the city are advancing, with organizers outlining a plan for a potential summer 2017 opening.

“It’s moved from an idea to being on a path to reality,” Dan Kenney said about the facility. Kenney is head of a four-member committee that is working as part of the #ProudlyDeKalb committee’s America’s Best Communities bid to establish the hub.

Kenney addressed the County Board’s Economic Development Committee this week, where he laid out long- and short-term goals for the food facility that is expected to be a fruit-and-vegetable supplier for nearby places, and even ones in Chicago.

“Right now, studies show there is a $25 million to $28 million impact market for local [distribution] to the Chicagoland area alone,” he said after announcing the start this month of a

feasibility study.

He said 40 to 50 farmers and growers would be surveyed as part of the study, which would look to gauge how much they produce now and whether they could increase that production. Also, potential buyers would be queried to help determine demand.

Kenney said the food hub committee is working with the Northern Illinois University Center for Governmental Studies, students from the university’s Springboard program and a consultant.

He explained that of the dozen farmers and caterers he’s already consulted, the idea for a community commercial kitchen – as part of the hub – has surfaced. It would include a shared space where other products the growers make, such as jams, jellies and salsas, could be prepared and sold.

While organizers are looking forward to the hub facility being located near Interstate 88, the commercial kitchen would likely be located in downtown DeKalb.

“So that will likely be another part

of this [food hub project],” Kenney said.

“You could even have a cafe there … a little bookstore, all kinds of things, so that becomes a central location.”

Results of the study are expected in April.

After that, the food hub committee expects to come up with a business plan.

It would be determined then whether the hub would be a nonprofit entity, who would own it and its fiscal plans.

Kenney said that should come by July.

“Based on what the business plan calls for, we’ll put together the funding,” Kenney told committee members.

The funding would be established by January so that construction on the hub building could begin in time for a summer 2017 opening.

Kenney said the goal is to move the hub into an existing building so that the facility stays on the tax rolls. He would not publicly disclose which buildings are being considered.

The food hub is one of the economic revitalization projects included in the

#ProudlyDeKalb group’s entry in the America’s Best Communities contest.

The competition is sponsored by Frontier Communications, Dish Network, The Weather Channel and CoBank, and DeKalb’s local organization received financial assistance from ESPN. The group already has received $50,000 to help develop their revitalization plan.

DeKalb is one of 15 cities around the U.S. still in the running for a grand prize of $3 million.

DeKalb found out earlier this year that it was one the semifinalists in the competition that started out last year with 350 communities. A team of representatives will travel to Durham, North Carolina, for the next phase of the competition, where they hope to advance to be one of the final eight cities and earn a $100,000 grant., ahead of the 2017 naming of the final three winning communities.

Although officials have their fingers crossed to be one the three winners, Kenney said the food hub would come even without an ABC victory.

OBITUARIES JOHN F. BUELL

Born: Jan. 20, 1937; in Belvidere, IL Died: March 2, 2016; in Kirkland, IL

John F. Buell, age 79, of Kirkland, died Wednesday, March 2, 2016 in his home.

He was born January 20, 1937 in Belvidere, son of John and Olga (Alm) Buell.

He married Barbara Haines in Rockford on October 8, 1960.

She passed away in 2010.

John attended Genoa High School and graduated from Sycamore High in 1955. He served in the United States Army in Berlin, Germany. He was a member of the Berlin U.S. Military Veterans Association and attended their yearly reunions. If you saw John around town, he was probably wearing a blue “BUSMVA” jacket. He was also a founding member of Westminister Presbyterian Church in DeKalb, and member of the Kirkland Historical Society. John loved to fish and tell jokes.

His distinctive laugh will always be remembered. He was able to fix anything, loved to “putter” and could often be heard whistling.

He is survived by daughters, Leigh Ann (David J.) Gombac of Sugarland, Texas and Mary (James A.) Marshall of Rockford; grandchildren, Rebecca and Andrew Gombac and Matthew, Katherine and Sarah Marshall; half-sister, Estelle (Richard) Ivanoff of Cedarville, Illinois, and several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara; step-father, William Reinmiller; brother, Kenneth Buell; and sister, Marjorie Harris.

The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 7, 2016 at Westminister

Richard “Rich” Ferdinand, age 66, of Maple Park, formerly of Gilman, passed away at his home, surrounded by the love and prayers of his family, Wednesday, March 2, 2016. BORN: He was born October 3, 1949, in Gilman, IL, the son of Ralph and Jeanette (Davis) Ferdinand.

He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Pam Ferdinand; two daughters, Coye (Tomas) Flores and Kelly (Kerry Smith) Ferdinand; and two grandchildren, Eliahs and Shiloh Flores.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Jeanette Ferdinand.

Visitation will be from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m., with a prayer service to begin at 5:00 p.m., Monday, March 7, 2016, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, 123 S. Fight on to save one of DeKalb’s oldest trees

The bur oak tree in the parkway in the 200 block of Rolfe Road in DeKalb on a recent afternoon. The tree is among the oldest in the city, and officials are taking steps to protect it.

DeKALB – Oak trees around DeKalb are experiencing a condition called oak wilt and the city is taking proactive measures to protect its oldest living bur oak tree.

The 450-year-old tree in the 200 block of Rolfe Road is one of several ancient bur oaks in DeKalb, but it’s the only one on city property, Public Works Superintendent Mark Espy said.

“We may have some trees close to that age on private property,” he said.

“But this is the oldest living parkway tree.”

The city dedicated the tree and memorialized it with a plaque,al though other old trees have been noted by the public. In 2015, Melanie Watkins – who lives in DeKalb’s historic district – lost a 300-year-old bur oak to carpenter ants and heavy limbs.

Typically, bur oak trees live to be between 300 and 400 years and grow to be between 70 and 100 feet, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

Early last year, Kramer Tree Specialists performed preventative care– such as fertilization and systemic injections – to the tree. In January, an arborist came back to trim deadwood and redo cable bracing, which helps redistribute the weight of the branches so they don’t collapse.

The city’s primary tree concerns deal with protecting its ash canopy. In 2009, the presence of the emerald ash borer was confirmed in DeKalb County. The non-native invasive insect has caused decay and death to thousands of ash trees throughout the county.

“The work is more specialized for [the bur oak]” Espy said, “We do spend a lot of time and resources on the ash canopy. … But this is more to preserve the historic value.”

Offices closed for day at Kish hospital campus; power restored

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – It took ComEd crews several hours to restore power Thursday after an outage hit part of the Kishwaukee Hospital campus and the KishHealth System Cancer Center.

The outage happened Thursday morning, hospital officials said.

While most operations continued as normal at the health system’s DeKalb campus, some departments, including offices in the KishHealth System Cancer Center, Cardiac Rehab at Kishwaukee Hospital, Business Office at Kish-

waukee Hospital, Diabetes Education at Kishwaukee Hospital and the office of Drs. Berry and Kinn were affected.

Affected entities were closed for the remainder of the day Thursday, with the exception of the Cardiac Rehab at Kishwaukee Hospital, which has reopened.

The outage affected fewer than five ComEd customers in the area, according to the utility company’s website. A ComEd spokeswoman said the outage was caused by a blown fuse.

Officials from KishHealth, which is part of Northwestern Medicine, said power was restored about 1:45 p.m.

Candidates concerned about competency Republican primary hopefuls consider possible changes

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Republican candidates for DeKalb County State’s Attorney plan to implement more regimented training for prosecutors if elected.

Richard Amato, Charles Rea and Clay Campbell are vying for the Republican nomination to challenge incumbent DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack.

Wednesday’s debate hosted by Northern Illinois University College Republicans revealed some of the candidates’ lack of confidence in office’s current crop of assistant state’s attorneys. If elected, former State’s Attorney Clay Campbell has said he will bring his own prosecutors on board with him, and retain those who “show initiative and ingenuity.”

“I’ve been here 25 years ... . This is the most inexperienced group of prosecutors that we’ve ever seen, and I think it’s largely because we have a state’s attorney that doesn’t have the background to do the type of training that’s necessary,” Campbell said of Schmack.

Although Hinckley lawyer and state’s attorney hopeful Charles Rea said he can’t speak personally about specific staff members’ strengths and weaknesses, the team as a whole has appeared to him undertrained and inexperienced for the past six years. “This has not been a normal state’s attorney’s office,” Rea said. “There’s felony assistants that have zero trial experience. That shouldn’t be the case, at least in a county where there is relatively serious crime going on. I consider it a problem.”

But Schmack is adamant each of his assistant state’s attorneys came to DeKalb County from another state’s attorney’s office, some with as many as

30 years of experience. Employees are offered chances to continue their law education through in-house training, seminars and occasional trial practice, he said.

“Everybody in the office came to our office from another state’s attorneys office before we hired them and they got a lot of experience in those places,” Schmack said. “They indicate that they plan to be career prosecutors and are dedicated to working in the state’s attor-

ney’s office.”

Additional practice would benefit the functionality and efficiency of the courthouse, said Sycamore attorney Richard Amato, who agreed his plans would include introducing more training for the assistants state’s attorneys.

“It would be a complete climate change and identity change in who they are and how they see themselves, both in the office and outside the office,” Amato said.

2 GE buildings set for demolition

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The city has issued demolition permits for two small buildings on the site of the former DeKalb Motors plant shuttered by General Electric in January 2015.

Permits for the demolition of the 7,500-square-foot Building 5 and the 6,900-square-foot Building 7 were issued Thursday, DeKalb Principal Planner Derek Hiland said.

Some demolition equipment was on site Thursday at 1900 Pleasant St. in DeKalb.

GE had operated the DeKalb Motors Plant since 1946. Workers at the

plant made small motors used in residential clothes dryers before it was closed. The closure affected 94 employees.

GE notified workers in January 2014 that it planned to close the DeKalb plant. The company gave union officials 60 days to submit a proposal to make the DeKalb plant competitive and keep the facility open. The union’s pitch was rejected. The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Republicans blasted House Democrats for earmarking nearly $3.7 billion for colleges and various human service programs, saying the legislation they passed Thursday is a pre-primary sham because the state still has no budget.

Democrats unveiled their funding proposal late Wednesday evening and described it as a compromise, angering Republicans who said they were not even consulted.

House Republican Leader Jim Durkin said during a tense debate that his party is willing to work with Democrats to pass a state budget, which has been overdue since July 1.

“I am waiting for you and your side of the aisle to work with us to try to find a compromise, not shoving a bill down our throat,” Durkin said.

The Democrats’ funding proposal still needs to pass the Senate, perhaps as soon as next week, before it goes to Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, who is expected to veto it.

During the state’s epic budget standoff, colleges have gone without funding, low-income students have lost tuition grants and social service agencies that help the elderly and homeless youth have closed or cut back the help they provide.

“Without a budget, the state has slammed the door shut in the faces of all of these needs,” said Rep. Barbara Flynn Currie, the Democrats’ House leader.

Illinois also is incurring more debt while the impasse continues because court-mandated spending is occurring but at revenue levels from last year, when the individual Illinois income tax rate was at 5 percent, not the current rate of 3.75 percent.

Rauner’s budget office sent a letter to House lawmakers Thursday before the vote saying the backlog of bills now is at $7.2 billion. The letter said there is no way to pay for the programs outlined in the Democrats’ spending bills without reducing spending in other areas.

The Democrats’ funding bills work in two parts. One measure forgives the repayment of $454 million of state funds taken last year from other special funds.

Another bill allocates nearly $3.7 billion

to a long list of social service programs – everything from homeless youth services to mental health programs and housing for low-income residents. It also budgets $397 million for tuition grants for low-income college students.

The proposals come a day after Democrats failed to override Rauner’s veto of a $721 million measure for colleges and tuition grants.

Democrats said Thursday’s measures give the state spending authority.

Republicans insist it’s a false promise ahead of the March 15 primaries.

“I think it’s pretty sad that we go through this exercise day in and day out knowing that this is just a political sideshow. It’s almost comical,” said Rep. Dwight Kay, a Republican from Edwardsville.

The parties continue to battle over issues that have now lasted almost a year. Rauner wants to overhaul term limits, change how legislative districts are drawn and curb union power before signing off on the tax increase many believe is necessary. Democrats contend Rauner needs to drop what they view as extreme demands.

CHICAGO – A judge has sentenced a woman with a history of sneaking aboard airplanes to six months of house arrest and placed her on two years’ mental health probation.

At a hearing on Thursday Cook County Circuit Judge William Raines ordered that 64-year-old Marilyn Marilyn Hartman serve Hartman her house arrest at a mental health facility where she now lives.

And under the terms of her probation, she can’t go to any airports, train stations or bus stops.

Hartman has attempted several times to board planes without a ticket and was arrested twice last summer at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and Midway International Airport.

Last month, she was arrested at an airport bus shelter center at O’Hare and charged with a felony probation violation and misdemeanor criminal trespassing.

Chicago’s Navy Pier to open new Ferris wheel May 27

CHICAGO – Chicago’s Navy Pier will open its new, taller Ferris wheel on May 27.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office said Wednesday the opening will kick off Navy Pier’s centennial celebration.

The new 196-foot Ferris wheel will stand 49 feet taller and fit up to 180 more passengers per ride than the previous attraction, which opened in 1995 and was removed in October.

The replacement also will have temperature-controlled gondolas, padded seats, TV screens and speakers.

It’s part of a $640 million project approved in 2013 aimed at drawing more tourists and trade shows to Chicago.

The city’s history with the Ferris wheel runs deep. The first one was built in 1893 in Chicago for the World’s Columbian Exposition.

WASHINGTON – The Justice Department will have to decide whether Hillary Clinton or any of her subordinates could face legal consequences for her use of a private email server, a decision whose timing is fraught with serious political repercussions.

Even though Attorney General Loretta Lynch has said there is no “artificial deadline” for concluding the investigation, the Obama administration is in the unenviable position of conducting an election-year probe that, no matter the outcome or reassurances to the contrary, will result in grievances about its impact on the presidential election.

One year ago, The Associated Press reported its discovery of Clinton’s private email server, which she ran in the basement of her home in Chappaqua, New York, to use exclusively for her work-related emails while she was secretary of state.

Clinton emerged from the Super Tuesday primaries earlier this week as the presumptive Democratic nominee for the presidency.

Teacher loses job after student shares nude photo COLUMBIA, S.C. – A high school teacher lost her job after a teenager went through her cellphone between classes, found a nude picture of her and shared it on social media.

No students have been disciplined, pending a police investigation.

Union County School District Superintendent David Eubanks, who forced Leigh Anne Arthur to resign or be fired, said Thursday that it’s her fault for leaving students unattended during a four-minute break between classes.

“She has tried to make this out as though it was strictly related to the photos,” Eubanks told The Associated Press. “I could care less what her pictures are on the cellphone.”

Military starting to recruit women for combat jobs

WASHINGTON – The military services are already beginning to recruit women for combat jobs, including as Navy SEALs, and could see them serving in previously male-only Army and Marine Corps infantry units by this fall, according to new plans endorsed

by Defense Secretary Ash Carter and obtained by The Associated Press.

Some of the services predict that only small numbers of women will volunteer or get through training courses, details of the plans show. The Marine Corps estimates 200 women a year will move into ground combat jobs. And U.S. Special Operations Command said it anticipates a “small number” of volunteers for its commando jobs.

Republican debate night: Insults flying once more The ASSOCIATED PRESS DETROIT – Relentless in their attacks, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz leveled withering criticism at Donald Trump’s “flexible” policy positions and personal ethics in a Republican presidential debate Thursday that also featured a crude sexual reference from Trump.

The two senators, who earlier had devoted considerable debate time to throwing sharp elbows at one another, pressed Trump aggressively on his conservative credentials, his business practices and changing policies.

Pressed on policy matters, Trump, in short order, signaled a willingness to deal on any number of issues.

He said it was fine that Florida Sen. Rubio had negotiated with other lawmakers on immigration policy.

He said he had changed his own mind to support admitting more highly skilled workers from overseas, adding matter-of-factly, “I’m changing. I’m changing. We need highly skilled people in this country.”

And he also was matter of fact about providing campaign contributions to leading Democrats, including 10 checks to Hillary Clinton, reviled by many conservatives.

Trump said it was simply business.

“I’ve supported Democrats and I’ve supported Republicans, and as a businessman I owed that to my company, to my family, to my workers, to everybody to get along,” he said.

The bad blood among the candidates flowed freely.

Rubio justified his attacks on Trump by saying the billionaire businessman had “basically mocked everybody” over the past year. Trump countered with a feint, saying he’d called Rubio a “lightweight” in the past but “he’s really not that much of a lightweight.”

Trump then noted that Rubio had mocked his hands as small, widely viewed as an insult about Trump’s sexual prowess. Holding his hands up to the audience, Trump declared, “I guarantee you, there’s no problem” in that area.

It was a jaw-dropping moment in a campaign that’s been full of surprises from the beginning.

On policy, when moderator Megyn Kelly told Trump his shifts caused some people to question his core, Trump insisted: “I have a very strong core. I have a very strong core. But I’ve never seen a successful person who wasn’t flexible, who didn’t have a certain degree of flexibility.”

Spending bill won’t solve the problem People are crying out for an end to the state’s budget crisis, and yet leaders in Springfield still refuse to do what the state needs – come up with a budget.

Instead, they’re spending valuable time and energy on trying to appease people in need without addressing the big problem – the state of Illinois has no spending plan for this fiscal year.

The effort Wednesday to override Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of Senate Bill 2043, which would have spent $397 million on tuition assistance for low-income college students and $324 million for the state’s community colleges, was another example of this flawed approach.

This push to spend $721 million without identifying where the money would come from is counterproductive.

In the nine months that Rauner and the Democrat-contolled legislature have allowed to pass without a budget, courts have intervened to compel the state to spend money at the same levels as last year, when the state income tax rate was higher.

As a result, Illinois has spent more money than it is taking in and its backlog of unpaid bills reached $6.6 billion at the end of 2015.

Without a budget deal, the total could be $9 billion by the end of the fiscal year June 30.

In that climate, rather than come up with an abbreviated spending plan that lays out revenue and spending and sets the state on a track to start paying its debts, legislators want to spend money that Illinois does not have.

This problem is in serious need of a solution. The situation for some institutions of higher education, both four-year public universities and two-year community colleges, is becoming dire. Unlike local elementary schools, higher education institutions have received no state aid this budget year.

Kishwaukee College officials expected $5 million in state aid this year, 22 percent of the school’s total budget, and the lack of funds is one reason layoffs are planned.

Officials at Chicago State University, which serves primarily low-income students, have said the school could run out of money to pay employees this month. Northern Illinois University officials said their institution has sufficient funds to last for another year without state help – but why should it come to that?

Low-income students who were promised state Monetary Assistance Program grants have not received them, forcing some to leave school, and costing schools more revenue they had counted on.

Students are responding to this sorry state of affairs by going to colleges and universities in other states – if they can afford it.

Illinois has been a top exporter of students to other states’ colleges and universities, and this “brain drain” hurts our state when those students choose not to return.

But this problem can’t be solved in a piecemeal fashion. A spending bill means little without a budget to appropriate funds for that spending.

Our state needs a budget, and it needs compromise on other issues needed to improve its business climate. The two are linked as a necessity of bargaining between a governor and an opposition party with total control over the legislature.

There must be change in Illinois, and among the changes needed is the understanding that the state can not spend money it does not have and plan to deal with the consequences at another time.

That’s how we got here in the first place.

I think we need someone with serious trial experience. Clay Campbell successfully prosecuted the oldest cold case in United States history.

In Clay, we have someone with a public service attitude. Someone who has the grit not be a yes man, in order to succeed!

Clay Campbell is a veteran of the United States Army, and I thank him for his service to our country. This alone, does not make Clay the best candidate. However, it does show the foundation of a person dedicated toward serving his country and his fellow man.

Clay has a proven record of being a fighter for all of De Kalb County! He will wage a fierce battle against the heroin epidemic as well as other drugs that are stealing the minds of our children and robbing so many families of the true American dream of being able to live and raise their families in a safe environment.

Support for Trump is mystifying

To the Editor: Is there something I am missing?

Must be.

There isn’t any reasonable explanation for the “success” of the Trump candidacy, even if one attributes it to a “need for change.” I think we all feel that need. But Trump? Really?

This is either a sign of collective stupidity, insanity or, worse, desperation.

Donald Trump is a bully who has collected all of the lunch money – not much more. He is verbally abusive and hides behind a bloated, questionably conceived dollar sign.

Recently, Marco Rubio, for whom I generally have little admiration, rightfully accused Trump of winning many of his successes on the backs of immigrants. While this is true of many Americans, this fact is particularly abhorrent from a man trying to be president; someone who’s so eager to build border walls.

Now, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s endorsement has all but vanquished any remaining shred of his own credibility. I wonder if Christie really thought this one through – to be in the same Trump-supportive camp as Sarah Palin and David Duke. Again, I am mystified.

Good God. Truly, I just don’t get it. But if I had to choose from the Republican field, I would choose John Kasich.

At least he is experienced and sincere and reasonably above the fray, staying with the issues and not stooping to the level of Rubio, Cruz and Christie.

But if one really wants change, and mine is not to find similarity with Trump, why not support Senator Sanders? By ethics and consistency alone, he’s the best we’ve got. I simply don’t understand why honesty and integrity aren’t worth more to the American electorate.

Instead of burning bridges with a demagogical player in the guise of a revolutionary, why not truly stand for something?

Why not “feel the Bern”?

by President Barack Obama to serve as U.S. Secretary of State, a position she held until 2013.

That’s not a bad résumé.

But Clinton’s baggage holds her back.

The State Department continues to investigate Clinton’s use of a private, unsecure email server to conduct official business while she was secretary of state, many of the emails containing classified information.

Then there’s the matter of the Clinton Foundation. While Hillary Clinton was secretary of state, her husband was seeking millions of dollars in donations from foreign interests that had business

before the State Department. Conflict of interest?

Clinton’s role in the delayed American response to the attack on the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi, leading to the deaths of four Americans, including the ambassador to Libya, has come under heavy scrutiny.

And Clinton’s transparency has come into question over her refusal to release transcripts or recordings of her controversial, paid speeches to big banks. In the meantime, Wall Street is pouring big money into her campaign.

Sanders, Clinton’s opponent, is a self-proclaimed democratic socialist.

His radical economic agenda is dangerous.

Sanders wants to raise taxes, particularly on the wealthy. He wants government to pay for just about everything and take care of everyone. How? By taking from the rich.

Sanders doesn’t think the Affordable Care Act goes far enough. He prefers a single payer system using Medicare.

Sanders wants the federal government – taxpayers – to pay for two years of “free” college tuition for every graduating high school senior in the country.

Did we mention that Sanders’ economic agenda is dangerous?

This is more an endorsement against Sanders than it is for Clinton, but for the Democratic nomination for U.S. President, we recommend Clinton.

A plea to the Supreme Court: Abortions, with no regrets It is as disturbing as it is inspiring, this response from so many women to publicly share their abortion stories so that members of the U.S. Supreme Court might read them.

Why must women in America continue to reveal to strangers the most intimate details of our lives to preserve our constitutional right to privacy?

Is there even one instance in which men are asked to do this? We women know the answer to that. We don’t dwell. On we go with our busy lives. Yet another wondrous thing about women, this ability to rise above this hateful battle of right-wing extremists. They are everywhere, it seems.

Outside our clinics. Inside our churches. Holding too many seats in state legislatures and Congress.

On Wednesday, the court heard arguments regarding a Texas law so restrictive that it could reduce the number of abortion clinics in that state from 40 to about 10. More than 100 women filed supporting briefs full of stories about the abortions that made it possible for them – and often their families – to live safe and productive lives.

The briefs are an appeal to Justice Anthony Kennedy. He is the one with the power, the man who will determine whether women will be able to

We have reason to worry.

As The New York Times reported, in a 2007 majority opinion, Kennedy claimed that many women regret their decision to have abortions.

He depicted them as depressed, the victims of plummeting self-esteem.

There is no evidence to support this.

So one woman after another spilled the most private details of their lives in court briefs to educate him. They have no regrets, and they spell out the reasons for that.

Kate Banfield found out in 1987 that she was pregnant. She was a 19-year-old freshman at Stanford University, home for the summer and working as a waitress. She had been raised Catholic and was worried that her parents would judge her.

From the brief: “She recently informed her father of her abortion for the first time, and her public participation in this brief. He said that while he may not have agreed with her decision at the time, he acknowledges that it was her decision to make and in retrospect he definitely agrees with the choice she made for herself.”

This is such a familiar story. A person is opposed to abortion – until he or she is not. Until the pregnancy that will derail a career, a family, a future. Until the fetus that is fatally deformed. Until the cost of a birth is the end of a mother’s life.

In all the years I’ve interviewed abortion providers, never once have I heard them utter a word of judgment for such people.

“We can think we’re so certain of right and wrong,” a clinic counselor once told me. “And then our lives intervene.”

Banfield is married with three children and has helped hundreds of other children as a teacher and advocate.

She does not regret her abortion.

In 1966, anthropologist Leni Silverstein had just graduated from the University of Chicago when she got pregnant, despite using a diaphragm.

Abortion was illegal in Illinois, but through a friend of a friend, she found an underground abortion provider in Chicago.

“Leni was incredibly scared,” the brief reads. “She was told she would have to meet an unidentified person in downtown Chicago. She had no idea where she would get the abortion, or who would perform it. She knew her safety and reproductive future were at risk. When she arrived

at the appointed meeting place, she was blindfolded and driven to an undisclosed location. She believes it was an apartment somewhere in Chicago.”

She does not regret her abortion.

Jo Baxter was a college junior when she had an abortion in 1965. She had already seen a 17-year-old relative’s life unravel after she became pregnant and dropped out of college to marry and carry the pregnancy to term. The woman never returned to college.

Baxter is married with two children. She is on the board of a violence prevention center and, for many years, also served on the board of a primary health care center for the uninsured.

She does not regret her abortion.

She has no interest in being cast as a victim. In a moment of crisis, she took control of her body – and her life.

It’s what women do.

Hillary Clinton regained control of the race for the Democratic nomination for U.S. President after the South Carolina and Super Tuesday primaries.

The fact that Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont made this such a tight contest to begin with says as much about Clinton as it does about Sanders.

Frankly, the former first lady has lost the trust of many Democratic voters. That’s despite the fact that Clinton arguably has the most experience of any of the candidates running for president, Democrat or Republican. But pitching staff is struggling mightily early on

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Murray State couldn’t get Northern Illinois leadoff hitter Justin Fletcher out.

Well, the Racers at least got him out four times in 22 tries.

During the wacky, run-filled series with the Racers, Fletcher led off an inning on seven occasions, reached base in each of them and had a staggering four games that earned him Mid-American Conference West Player of the Week honors. The teams combined to score 115 runs – 71 by Murray State, 44 by the Huskies. Fletcher hit 14 for 17 (.824), with eight runs, seven RBIs and six doubles, three walks, a hit by pitch and a sacrifice fly.

“I was feeling it a little bit,” Fletcher said with a smile. “It feels good. It feels really good, but individual performances are one thing, but they’re secondary to the big picture, which is winning baseball games.”

The Huskies (1-7) lost three games in the series.

In the seven times Fletcher led off an inning, he went 5 for 5 with two walks, two doubles and scored six runs.

“Being a leadoff guy, it’s about doing whatever it takes,” Fletcher said.

“If you need a walk, if you need to see pitches, if you need to hit something hard, you need to do it for your team.

You have to set the table for the guys behind me, (and) hopefully they drive me in.”

Through eight games, Fletcher is hitting .600 as the leadoff hitter and already has as many doubles this year (eight) as he had in 52 games last season. Not only that, the hot start comes after he finished only .181 at the plate as a junior in 2015.

“Good hitters go through stretches like that,” NIU coach Mike Kunigonis said. “Our job as coaches is to make sure he continues to feel good. No one is going to feel that good all the time, ev-

In a stretch that spanned three games – the final game of the Boston College series and the first two games against Murray State – Fletcher reached base in 10 consecutive appearances, which included five doubles, three singles and two walks.

However, for as hot as Fletcher was

in the series against Murray State, the Huskies’ pitching staff was equally woeful.

During the four games, it allowed 64 earned runs on 74 hits – including surrendering 17 runs in the series finale against Boston College. On the season, the Huskies have an ERA of 11.82.

With a new batch of starting pitchers, no Huskies starter has managed to throw a pitch in the fifth inning.

The best start of the series came from freshman William Anderson, who allowed six earned runs on eight hits in four innings in a 15-12 loss.

“Tough weekend,” Kunigonis said of the pitching. “Those types of things don’t happen often. That’s baseball.

Once in a while, you see a crazy weekend, and that’s what that weekend was.”

In the series finale, the Huskies lost 29-16 – the second most runs NIU has allowed in a game in program history, behind only a 32-2 loss to New Orleans

in 1994.

Kunigonis said he is slightly tweaking the starting rotation with Ryan Olson back in the rotation, likely to start Sunday. In the 12-10 win over Murray State, Olson pitched 61/3 innings of relief, picking up the win by allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Olson (1-1, 7.56 ERA) will join Joe Hawks (0-2, 10.24 ERA) and Anderson (0-1, 8.10 ERA) as starters in the three-game series.

The Huskies play a three-game series at Evansville, starting at 3 p.m.

Friday. Aside from the 17-0 beatdown in the series finale, the Huskies were only outscored 12-2 in the other three games of a four-game series against Boston College (7-0).

“We just have to find a way to put the hitting and pitching and defense all together,” Fletcher said. “We’ll start winning baseball games, and I’m confident we’ll do that soon.”

Rough night for Darling Backup goalie gives up 2 1st-period goals in rare start

mlazerus@suntimes.com BOSTON – Funny thing about being a backup goaltender. You work as hard as you can to be as ready as possible for the rare times you get the call. But ideally, you won’t see a minute of ice time in the postseason.

Of course, Scott Darling proved how important a backup goalie can be last season, when he righted the Blackhawks ship during the first-round series against Nashville. And in this final month of the season, Darling likely will get two or three starts as the Hawks try to fend off Dallas and St. Louis for the Central Division title. So no matter what, he’ll play a key role.

“I do most of my work in practice with Darling, because he plays less than [Corey Crawford],” Hawks goaltending coach Jimmy Waite said. “I make sure I keep him sharp, because when he steps in there he needs to be sharp, and we need those two big points.”

Well, Darling wasn’t sharp Thursday night. And as a result, the Hawks’ building momentum was slowed by an underwhelming 4-2 loss to the Boston Bruins.

“He wasn’t very good tonight,” coach Joel Quenneville said of Darling. “We expect more than that.”

Darling was making only his second start in nearly six weeks (he had three relief appearances in that span).

“He’s had some real good games for us,” Quenneville said. “It’s one game.

I can’t remember the last one he had where he was [bad]. So he’s been all right.”

The Hawks lost, 4-2. he faced as the Hawks dug themselves a hole they couldn’t get out of. The Hawks remained in first place, because Dallas and St. Louis were off. But every chance to put some distance between them and the rest of the division is a big one.

“It was just one of those games that we got behind early,” Hawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson said. “Nowadays it seems like it’s tough to get back in games when you’re down. We’ve got to find a way to get a better effort.”

Darling gave up a goal to Patrice Bergeron 78 seconds into the first period, and Brad Marchand with 22 seconds left. Quenneville wasn’t happy with either. In between, Jonathan Toews scored with assists from newcomers Christian Ehrhoff and Andrew Ladd.

Ryan Spooner and Loui Eriksson added second-period goals to make it 4-1, and although Tomas Fleischmann’s first goal with the Hawks – off a nice bit of passing from Hjalmarsson and Teuvo Teravainen – gave the team life late in the second

period, they couldn’t get any closer.

The loss follows big wins over Washington and Detroit. It’s the kind of inconsistent play they’ve been lamenting all season – all or nothing, good or bad.

And the Hawks no longer have their schedule as an excuse for the occasional off night. The brutal pace they faced in January and early February has slowed to a crawl, so that even a back-to-back set of road games like the one this week shouldn’t be too much of a burden.

Quenneville pointed out they’re in the midst of a 10-game stretch against playoff teams. But if they want to win the division and secure home-ice advantage, they’ll need to be more consistent, no matter who’s in net.

“We have a really good schedule the rest of the season, so we can’t really blame it on being tired or anything like that,” Hjalmarsson said. “There’s teams that have much worse schedules than we have for the rest of the season, so we definitely have to try to take advantage.”

Anderson struck out Kris Bryant in the first inning and allowed a single to Miguel Montero in the second.

Montero added a single in the fourth, accounting for two of the Cubs’ seven hits.

Bryant had a single in two at-bats and Anthony Rizzo was 0 for 2 with a strikeout.

He was acquired in Epstein’s second trade with the Cubs – a week before the Anthony Rizzo trade – before the 2012 season. And he now is the longest tenured player in the clubhouse, having made his Cubs debut more than a month before Rizzo that year.

“It’s definitely been something to see over the years, especially when you look back and see how many players we ran through in those first couple of years,” said Wood, who started the Cubs’ spring training opener ThursTravis Wood day, a 2-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. “And now to have a pretty solid team is nice.”

Wood’s career has undergone almost as many changes in that span, bringing him to what might be the biggest crossroads year of his career – playing a significant role for a World Series favorite in his final season before free agency.

“I think he’s going to get better,” said manager Joe Maddon, who moved Wood from the rotation to the bullpen last May and wound up with one of his most valuable relievers during the Cubs’ first playoff season in seven years. “Because he has a better understanding of what’s going on, he’s a better pitcher. He knows himself better.”

Not that anybody knows where Wood will be this time next year or in what role.

And not that even Wood was certain he’d be back this season.

The left-hander, who made the AllStar team during a 200-inning season as a starter in 2013, was paid in the arbitration process as a starter heading into last season ($5.7 million). With as much as the Cubs planned to address this past offseason, and with the budget initially falling short of some of the plans, Wood, as a reliever, figured to be a potential trade or non-tender candidate.

“It could have went either way,” said Wood, whose value was rewarded with a commitment for 2016 and a $6.2 million deal. “Just the fact that I’m here on this team, I’m giving it everything I can.”

ably will carry from last year into this one. He’s one of four ex-starting pitchers likely to be in a seven- or eight-man bullpen, including two former All-Star starters (also Trevor Cahill).

Perhaps none has proved more versatile than Wood, who earned a save in his first appearance out of the bullpen, made two spot starts in September and wound up with a 2.95 ERA and 11 strikeouts per nine innings in 45 relief appearances overall.

“If that’s my role going in, I’ll try to do as best I can,” said Wood, who gave up a run Thursday in a clean two innings after a leadoff triple in the first.

“I’ll try to take it whenever they need me and come out and give them everything I’ve got.”

But it also is no secret he wants the chance to start more games this year.

“I hope so,” he said, adding that his preparation for the season is based on that mindset. “But, then again, we’ll see where it takes us.”

In that 2013 season, he had a 3.11 ERA and 24 quality starts. In the National League, only Clayton Kershaw, Adam Wainwright and Cole Hamels had more that year.

Does he still consider himself a starter as he looks long-term at his career?

“In my mind, yes,” he said, before repeating what appears to be his mantra this year. “But, really, wherever they put me, I’m going to take the ball and give you everything I’ve got.”

All Maddon knows is, “I’m very excited to have him back.

“I’m certain there’s a part of him that wants to be a starter, even if he’s not going to concede it or say it loudly,” the manager added. “But he also understands what a great job he did last year in the longevity (he provided) in the game. He knows how much I appreciate what he does and how he does it.”

GLENDALE, Ariz. – As fifth starters go, the White Sox could do a lot worse than the serviceable John Danks.

As highest paid players go, they could do better, and therein lies the source of frustration for fans, many of whom rolled their eyes upon hearing Danks got hit around for three runs in the first two innings of the Sox’s Cactus League opener Thursday.

“I’d be lying to you if I said it hasn’t been frustrating the last couple of years,” Danks said after throwing 45 pitches in a 6-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. “That’s a given. But I’m not the first guy to have to make some adjustments. I feel like I can do better than I have the last couple years and have shown flashes in the second half in general last year. If I can roll that into this year, make the adjustments we’re hoping to make, I think my struggles will be something of the past.”

Turner said the Cubs treated him well, showing patience when he got hurt and providing good care through the rehab process.

And he now has a chance on the other side of town.

“I’m just happy to be healthy and pitching again,” he said.

As good as the Sox’s record of keeping starters healthy has been, general manager Rick Hahn knows there never is enough depth. Hence, the signing of Turner.

“As for Johnson or Turner or any members of our rotation in Chicago or potentially Charlotte, we’re not naïve enough to think we’ll have five guys make 32 starts,” Hahn said. “We fully expect Erik, and possibly Jacob, and others in this camp to contribute in a meaningful way.”

These are turning-point times in Turner’s life. Not only is he trying to get his career path on a positive track, he and his wife became parents for the first time five months ago.

“Baby girl,” he said. “It’s been life-changing, a different experience.

It definitely puts life in a different perspective.”

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Spring is about new life, turning a page, regeneration.

This one couldn’t come soon enough for former Cub Jacob Turner, a former first-round draft pick who is eager to rejuvenate his career after missing the entire 2015 season because of an elbow injury.

“I’m just excited to be competing again, honestly,” said Turner, who is slated to get the start in the White Sox’s second Cactus League game today against the Cleveland Indians. “Last year was Jacob Turner disappointing. When you can’t pitch a whole year, you realize how much you miss the game. I just miss competing. I’m looking forward to getting out there and showing what I can do.’’

Before the Sox traded for Mat Latos, it was believed Turner would compete this spring with Erik Johnson for a spot in the rotation. Because of his track record, Latos seems to have the edge toward landing a place with Chris Sale, Jose Quintana, Carlos Rodon and John Danks, but he also has health issues in his recent past to navigate.

Turner, meanwhile, is out of minor league options and would have to make the 25-man roster to avoid being exposed to waivers. The Sox claimed Turner off waivers last fall from the Cubs, who carried him on the 60-day disabled list for most of 2015. He was non-tendered and signed to a $1.5 million contract.

“This is a spot I can come in and show what I can do and kind of go from there,’’ said Turner, who said he’s feeling healthy again after strained flexor tendon and shoulder issues.

“All anyone in this locker room is looking for is an opportunity. You have to take advantage of it.’’

Turner owns an 11-25 record with a 4.97 ERA in 299 major league seasons in Detroit (2011-12), Miami (2013-14) and with the Cubs (2014).

He was in the mix for a rotation spot with the Cubs last spring, pitched two scoreless innings in the their Cactus League opener against the Giants and then got hurt. After two rehab assignments, Turner had elbow surgery, a humbling experience for the 2009 No. 9 overall pick who received a $4.7 million signing bonus from the Detroit Tigers.

Grace Harrison, a seventh-grader at Cornerstone Christian Academy in Sycamore, was named February Mathlete of the Month at Mathnasium, a private math learning center that specializes in math instruction for all grades and ability levels serving students in DeKalb, Sycamore and Genoa.

Newman Catholic Student Center/ Christ the Teacher University Parish, 512 Normal Road in DeKalb, will host a parish Mission of Mercy beginning at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

The event is open to Catholics and non-Catholics.

Three unique speakers will be featured with three opportunities to experience God’s mercy. The event is free. Baby-sitting will be provided as needed.

Sunday will feature a presentation titled “God’s Healing Mercy” given

by Paula Sentovich of Rockford. The focus will be on allowing God’s mercy into one’s own brokenness and experiencing healing. There will be special opportunities for prayer and meditation.

Also as a part of the evening, the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick will be offered.

There will be a Mass at 9 p.m.

Monday night will feature Deacon Tom Hawksworth from Holy Angels Parish in Aurora. He will present “God’s Mercy Alive in a Broken World.” Through his compassion and care ministries for the elderly, Hawksworth has many great stories and experiences to share.

Tuesday will be a special student and family night. A sister from the Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary will be giving the talk, “The Year of Mercy, a Gift and a Task.”

The sisters work in the Peoria Diocese and serve the student population there and at Illinois State University in Normal.

Aging feet require special care Dear Dr. K: As I’ve entered my 60s, I’ve noticed my toenails are thicker and the skin on my feet is drier. Should I change my foot care routine?

Dear Reader: Just like the rest of your body, your feet change with age. By age 50, you may have lost almost half of the fatty padding on the soles of your feet. To compensate, you may want to add overthe-counter cushioning inserts to your shoes for additional padding.

As your feet age, it also may be time to consider different forms of exercise.

Swimming and bicycling, for example, put less pressure on the joints of the foot than jogging or tennis.

It’s also a good idea to stretch your feet and ankles regularly to help reduce the incidence of injury. I’ve put examples, descriptions and illustrations of some stretches and exercises on my website, www.askdoctork.com.

Toenail and foot skin health are important, too. Skin grows thinner and drier with age, and nails may become thicker or more brittle. If your nails are thick and yellow, it may indicate a health problem. To keep your feet healthy, exercise or massage them to increase circulation. Pay attention to nutrition, too.

Maintaining good overall health helps your feet stay healthy along with the rest of you.

Another good idea is to moisturize your feet regularly so you don’t develop cracks and fissures in the skin. Not only are openings in the skin painful, they also make you more susceptible to viruses and bacteria that enter through breaks in the skin and cause infection.

Pay special attention to the heels, as these can get very dry. However, do not

This area tends to be moist, and you may end up encouraging some type of fungal or bacterial growth.

As your nails become thicker with aging, they may be harder to cut. When I recommend treatments, they do not always involve pharmaceuticals. When a home remedy may work, I mention it as well. Here’s one that may help: Apply a bit of Vicks VapoRub ointment (normally used for easing chest congestion) to your thick nails, massaging it on gently. Wipe off any excess ointment before pulling on socks or going to bed. After a month or so of daily applications, you should find your toenails softer and easier to trim.

It’s not clear why this works, but one of the ingredients in Vicks VapoRub (probably the eucalyptus oil) apparently softens the nails.

The questions readers send in sometimes ask about diseases, particularly major afflictions such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes. But there is one category of suffering readers ask about more than disease: decrepitude.

And lots of people have questions about their aching feet. I’m particularly sympathetic as I’m writing this column, as I’m suffering an attack of gout, and my right foot hurts.

That must be true, but at the bridge table, when there is no one to guide you, do not be blind to the information available from the calls made and cards played.

In this deal, South is in three no-trump. West leads the heart six: eight, five (starting a high-low to show an even number), nine. How should declarer continue?

After South opens one no-trump, North should respond two hearts, a transfer bid indicating at least zero points and five spades. Then, North might rebid three no-trump, but that could work out very badly if South has weak hearts. So, North rebids three diamonds, which is natural and game-forcing.

South starts with seven top tricks: one spade, one heart (trick one), four diamonds and one club. He can get the extra winners from either black suit -- but on which should he play?

Let’s look at the first trick. East was playing third hand high, but didn’t beat dummy’s eight. Why not? Because he couldn’t. West has the heart ace-queen hovering over South’s king-jack. If East gets on lead, a heart return will kill the contract.

So, the spade finesse should not be taken. Instead, declarer should lead a low diamond to dummy’s nine and play a club to his 10 (allowing for East’s having the jack and king).

When the finesse wins, South returns to dummy with a diamond, takes a second club finesse, and here wins 11 tricks.
