Best time of year for a morning jog POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS

If the crowds I see at the local fitness centers are any indication, a lot of people like to work out in the evenings. Good for you for working it in when you can, but that has never been my practice.

The best time to exercise is the morning, before the weight of the world closes in, before all the coffee and keystrokes, and whatever I wolf down at lunch. Better to work all that off tomorrow, when the day is fresh.

This is the best time of year to get out for a morning jog, or walk, or whatever you do to get your blood pumping. The sun comes up early, but it’s brisk out, so you can run farther before you’re really sweating.

My favored route runs down some residential streets in my Sycamore neighborhood to a walking path, which leads past workshops and industrial buildings, behind the DeKalb County Farm Bureau building, and then across Bethany Road to follow Peace Road.

Although I love the name, Peace is hardly peaceful, especially in the mornings, when its crowded with what passes for heavy traffic here in DeKalb County.

problems in the county. We’re also lucky to have a good network of pedestrian paths. We should keep expanding it.

On my running route, I see a few people.

The morning commute crowd is different than the people you encounter out for a stroll on the weekends. Dog walkers and bicycle riders, mostly. A lot of them seem to be in a hurry.

But mostly I am alone running past the farm fields with corn stubble still covered in frost. You can see a long way into the distance with the corn mowed low. Your mind can get lost out there, too.

Jogging through the prairie air makes for a good start to a morning.

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said Wednesday that women who get an abortion should receive “some form of punishment” if it is ever outlawed, drawing swift condemnation from activists on both sides of the divisive social issue.

Within hours, Trump’s campaign sought to take back his comments in two separate statements, ultimately saying the billionaire businessman believes abortion providers – and not their patients – should be the ones punished.

“My position has not changed,” Trump argued in both statements released by his campaign.

“Like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions.”

Trump’s original remarks about abortion came in a heated exchange with MSNBC host Chris Matthews at the Wednesday afternoon taping of a town hall in Green Bay, Wisconsin, scheduled to air that night. Matthews asked Trump whether he believes abortion should be outlawed.

After an extended back-and-forth, Trump said, “you have to ban” abortion and “there has to be some form of punishment” for women who violate such a restriction.

Pressed by Matthews on the nature of that punishment, Trump responded, “I haven’t determined what the punishment should be.”

Trump also suggested that should abortion ever be barred, women could continue to receive abortions at “illegal places.”

DeKalb, Sycamore chambers band together to show off local organizations

bkeeperman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – More than 100 DeKalb County businesses gathered Wednesday to show off their services and engage with the community during the 2016 Community Expo.

DeKalb and Sycamore’s chambers of commerce host the event annually. This year, vendors packed into the DeKalb High School fieldhouse. Community attendance was good this year, said Amber Gerardy-Robinson, events and marketing assistant at the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce.

“So far, so good,” she said. “We have about the same number of vendors, and as far as the traffic, a lot of times when the weather isn’t nice, we get a large turnout.”

The expo offered a chance for local businesses to meet face to face during the B2B portion of the day and when the event opened to the public, even more visitors had a chance to find out about community offerings in both DeKalb and Sycamore, she said.

“Every year we get about the same mix of Sycamore and DeKalb [companies],” Gerardy-Robinson said.

“Which is pretty cool, to see both cities coming together to show off their businesses.”

Nicole Adams said Wednesday was her first trip to the expo after four years of living in DeKalb, and she enjoyed it.

“I learned about new businesses, but also a lot of businesses with new services,” she said. “I may have been familiar with the business, but didn’t know they offered different things.”

Adams was there with her children, including a teenage daughter who happened to have a baseball game at the high school that day.

Adams’ son, Jon Chapen, said his favorite part was the chance to spin the prize wheel at many booths. His favorite win was a reusable water bottle, which he further decked out with a drink cozy.

There were plenty of events for children at the expo this year, and Northern Illinois University took the opportunity to expand its STEM program reach. The booth sported video games, percussive instruments, a 3-D printing activity

“Once they get ahold of those, a kid will keep playing with it until the battery runs out,” she said.

The activities were interactive and allowed kids a taste of what NIU offers in terms of summer camp programming and also served as an advertisement for upcoming STEM events.

“We’re here to be part of the community and show the community what we do,” she said. “We have activities that the kids can do, and then we can talk to the parents about our summer camps, of course.”

Making a case for HB 580 State workers press Pritchard to support veto override

rgillespie@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – About three dozen Northern Illinois University and state employees visited state Rep. Bob Pritchard’s Sycamore office Wednesday to urge his support for a Democrat-backed union bill that the governor is sure to reject.

“He’s going to veto House Bill 580.

We need you, I need you, to let us know, at this point, whether you plan to override that veto,” said Ellen Cabrera, an NIU office manager who told Pritchard she’s worked there for 16 years.

The legislation takes Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, specifically, out of the collective bargaining process in a case where the two sides can’t reach an agreement – as they currently haven’t. The measure applies to contracts that expired June 30, 2015, and ones set to expire on or before June 30, 2019. Rauner’s term runs through early January 2019.

It also calls for a mediator to settle differences. The governor has vowed to veto it. Union officials and some workers feel they fare better with a middle man than with the governor.

“Things are getting dire. We are desperate to make [Pritchard] understand what Rauner is doing to state workers and people in Illinois, in general,” said Sara Dorner, American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees representative for DeKalb County-area workers.

“We don’t think [Pritchard] understands the absolute horrific effects that Gov. Rauner’s anti-union agenda could have on people here.”

AFSCME represents about 900 people who live in Pritchard’s 70th District, union officials said. It negotiates only health benefits for university workers.

In February, HB 580 passed the House, 67-46, with Pritchard and another representative voting “present.” That is not support for or against the bill. Earlier this month, the measure passed the Senate, 38-17.

The majority-Democrat Legislature could need support from Republicans to override the governor’s veto. The union workers asked Pritchard to tell them which way he’d vote, but their rallying appeal

Three dozen people affiliated with American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees from the state and NIU showed up Wednesday at state Rep. Bob Pritchard’s Sycamore office, urging him to side with House Bill 580. didn’t move him from his undecided stance.

“This is with the [Illinois] Labor Relations Board. It is premature to pass a bill that favors one side or the other. And that’s why I have not voted yes or no,” said Pritchard, R-Hinckley. “I am always listening until I vote. So I won’t say categorically I will vote one way or the other.”

In fact, he fussed at the group for converging on his office without an appointment. He left another local event and returned to his office to meet with the group.

“This is just courtesy in talking about important issues,” Pritchard said. “But we can’t do it just at the spur of the moment without advance notice.”

The group was, nevertheless, adamant about laying out its concerns and asking unequivocally for him to

back the bill. As it is now, the Illinois Labor Relations Board is expected to decide some time in May if the two negotiating groups are at an impasse.

If it decides yes, then the governor gets to present his best, last offer to the union before AFSCME could then move to strike. If it is ruled they are not at an impasse, the two sides will have to continue to negotiate.

But, should it become law, HB 580 would call for a mediator to help reach a final contract decision.

“If we go on strike, that would leave the children of DeKalb and Ogle counties unprotected,” said Christine Gardner, who works in DeKalb for the Department of Children and Family Services. “We very much want to have a fair contract.

We want to continue our services. We want to continue to protect the children and provide services to kids in need. We won’t be able to do that if

our contract is interrupted and Gov. Rauner forces us out on strike.”

The union is asking for raises ranging from 11.5 percent to 29 percent, a 37.5-hour workweek and five weeks of paid vacation, among other benefits.

A Rauner lawyer called the request “outrageously expensive and unacceptable,” according to a July memo Rauner sent to heads of state agencies about the negotiations.

The governor wants to have workers pay higher health care premiums, co-payments and deductibles, among its menu of options.

“If the governor is successful at forcing state workers to pay double for their health coverage, those same unaffordable increases would definitely affect myself and all the rest of us university employees,” said Cabrera, who explained that her husband and son also work for NIU.

IceHogs welcome Ross back after felony charge dropped

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The Rockford IceHogs have lifted their suspension of Garret Ross, a Blackhawks left-wing prospect, after DeKalb County prosecutors dropped a felony revenge porn charge against him.

Ross, 23, of the 6500 block of Springbrook Road, Rockford, was accused of using an explicit video of a woman to get revenge on her because he blamed her for his then-girlfriend leaving him late last year, according to court records.

But records show both Ross’ and the woman’s phone were in Michigan when the video was sent, leaving Illinois authorities working on the case with no jurisdiction, DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack said Wednesday.

Although Ross was arrested Feb. 6, he wasn’t suspended from the team until March 23, the day after his charges made headlines. He was reinstated hours after the charge was dropped.

“We learned today, March 29, that the legal process concluded in Illinois with the dismissal of all charges against Garret,” the Blackhawks said in a written statement. “As a result, Garret Ross is reinstated with the IceHogs, effective immediately. We will have no further comment on the matter.”

Blackhawks officials did not return a phone call Wednesday seeking comment on the rapid reinstatement. The woman depicted in the video has said she plans to file a police report in Michigan.

a measure in December 2014 making the nonconsensual distribution of private sexual images a felony. Illinois is one of 27 states in the country with a law specifically prohibiting the distribution of sexually explicit images without permission.

Michigan, however, has no such laws.

A federal law addressing the issue might have benefited Ross’ accuser, Brooklyn, New York, attorney and cyber exploitation and sexual consent litigator Carrie

Goldberg said.

“It demonstrates just how badly we need some uniformity in these laws,” Goldberg said. “What we really need is a federal law so that there’s uniformity. Even with the 27 states that have laws, we have 27 different laws.”

The term “revenge porn” is often used in reference to the distribution of private sexual images, and is most commonly committed by jilted ex-partners, Goldberg said.

Unlike some states, Illinois law doesn’t outline specific motives punishable for distributing private images.

“When Ross’ girlfriend accused him of cheating, he began texting me, harassing me with images that I had sent [another man], calling me ‘really classy’ and a slut,” the woman depicted in the video said Tuesday. “I felt threatened and went to the police.”

If Ross did send the woman a private, sexual video of herself, it could legally be viewed as a threat to further distribute the video – something revenge porn offenders typically do before making private material public, Goldberg said.

“The Internet’s provided this amazing venue for really exposing and torturing people and it has a long-lasting, far-reaching impact,” Goldberg said. “It’s a way for an offender, with very minimal effort, to exact long-term horror onto his victim.”

SYCAMORE – A pair of Chicago attorneys will represent Jack McCullough in his quest to be released from prison.

On Wednesday, DeKalb County Associate Judge William Brady appointed conflict attorney Bob Nolan to represent McCullough for the remainder of his post-conviction proceedings. However, attorneys Gabriel Fuentes and Shaun Van Horn also came forward Wednesday seeking to represent McCullough, and Nolan is no longer required to work on his behalf, court records show.

Fuentes and Van Horn met with DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack on Wednesday at the DeKalb County Courthouse in Sycamore.

Both lawyers declined to comment on their involvement in the case and on their reason for meeting with Schmack, who recently filed documents claiming that McCullough, 76, was wrongfully convicted in 2012 of the 1957 murder of 7-year-old Sycamore girl Maria Ridulph.

McCullough wants the courts to vacate his conviction and free him from prison, where he is serving a life sentence at the Pontiac Correctional Center.

McCullough will next be in court April 15 to set a timeline for the conclusion of his petition for post-conviction relief. The judge cannot make any rulings, however, until McCullough has had a chance to talk to a lawyer.

SYCAMORE – Brennan Kelly was only a block from his home in the Heron Creek subdivision Tuesday when his vehicle was hit by a driver whom police said was drunk.

A little before 2:30 p.m., Kelly, 34, was returning from a trip to the Sycamore post office. He was driving east on Heron Creek Drive in his new 2016 Hyundai Elantra, when he said a neighbor’s Dodge SUV crossed into his lane of traffic, moving about 50 mph.

“There was no time to react,” Kelly said Wednesday in an interview. “It happened so fast, and there was nothing I could do because I was already as far right as I could get. There wasn’t anywhere for me to go.”

The two vehicles collided near Eli G. Jewell Court, the SUV mangling the driver’s side of the Kelly’s Hyundai. The impact spun the SUV around. Once it came to a rest in the parkway, the driver, Doug Hooker, 49, of the 300 block of Heron Creek Drive, got out and ran off.

“My car’s smoking, and I’m afraid it’s going to to blow up, and I’m crawling out the passenger window, and I have cuts on my hand,” Kelly said. “I asked where the other guy was, they said, ‘Oh, he fled.’

“People in the area saw what happened and approached Hooker, who threw his phone into a retention pond, then returned to the scene of the crash,” Sycamore Deputy Police Chief Darrell Johnson said.

Hooker couldn’t immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.

Kelly and Hooker both were taken to the hospital after the crash, where Kelly said he spent about five hours being treated for injuries including a broken sternum, cuts on his arm and hand, a gash on his forehead, and scrapes where his seat belt had dug into his skin.

After his release from the hospital, Hooker was charged with driving under the influence, driving with a blood-alcohol content greater than 0.08 percent, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and driving without proof of insurance, Johnson said.

Kelly, who also teaches at Northern Illinois University, said he was a bit frustrated at having to wait until Friday to receive a copy of the full police report – it has to be approved before it can be released, Johnson said – and at not knowing if Hooker had insurance.

Kelly said he commutes daily to a job in Racine, Wisconsin, where he works with blind and visually impaired students, a 90-mile oneway trip that takes about two hours. Despite all that time on the road, he was only a block from his home on a quiet street when he was in a head-on collision with a drunken driver.

Johnson said it might seem unusual for this kind of crash to occur in the middle of a weekday, but it’s becoming more common.

“We’ve seen a lot of daytime DUIs, whether under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” he said.

“You’ve got a lot of people with different shift work these days and they’re out doing things you’d more commonly see at night.”

Given the long distance he travels to work each day, it’s important that Kelly has a car, and soon, he said.

“It was terrible. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, never in a million years,” Kelly said. “I’m just glad that my 4-year-old son wasn’t in the car. It could have been worse.”

Gov. frustrated at lack of budget progress

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner expressed frustration at the lack of progress in budget negotiations with Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan, saying Wednesday that his efforts to arrange a one-on-one meeting have gone nowhere.

Rauner accused Madigan and fellow Illinois Democrats of “playing games” by purposefully stalling talks on a long overdue budget so they can argue for a tax hike.

Illinois is the only state in the country without a budget for the current fiscal year, which began July 1.

“Why can’t we meet today? What’s the reason? There’s no reason. It’s game-playing on their side. They’re trying to force a tax hike, and they’re playing games right now,” a clearly exasperated Rauner said during an event to promote a revamp of the state’s information technology systems.

Prosecutors won’t retry Blagojevich on tossed counts

CHICAGO – Prosecutors said they won’t retry former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich on five counts tossed by a federal appeals court and have requested a resentencing date.

Prosecutors’ Wednesday filing came two days after the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear Blagojevich’s appeal of 13 remaining corruption convictions. Those include his attempt to sell an appointment to the Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama.

The high court was one of the 59-yearold Democrat’s last hopes to have his remaining convictions tossed or to sharply reduce his 14-year prison sentence.

An appeals court in July vacated Blagojevich’s convictions on five counts and told prosecutors to consider resentencing him on the remaining counts. But they

meet with the governor, Brown said: “I haven’t asked the speaker that so I wouldn’t know.”

The ideological clash between Rauner and Democrats who control the Legislature has plunged Illinois further into debt during the nine months the state has operated without a budget because of court-ordered spending for key programs. Chicago State backs off plan to collect keys

CHICAGO – Chicago State University backtracked Wednesday from a plan to collect keys from faculty and staff members, instead announcing that it would take an inventory of keys that might have to be collected should layoffs be necessary amid the state’s financial crisis.

Administrator Aleshia Renee Terry had asked deans on Monday to begin collecting keys “as soon as possible,” the Chicago Tribune reported. The school said the move was necessary to protect state property.

“Every key must be collected, including master keys and special lock keys,” she wrote. “We are attempting to complete the key collecting process by April 4.”

Chicago to consider settlement in jail death suit

CHICAGO – Chicago’s City Council is expected to vote next month on a proposed agreement that would settle a

federal civil suit brought by the family of a man who died after police subdued him with a stun gun and dragged him out of a cell by his handcuffs.

The city hasn’t disclosed the terms, including about any payout to the family of Philip Coleman, who was 38 when he died in 2012, the Chicago Sun-Times reported this week.

A decisive December ruling by Judge Matthew Kennelly found “brute force” was used unnecessarily on Coleman, a finding that left the question of any payment amount to a jury. But a settlement would avert a trial.

Obama commutes drug sentences of 5 Ill. inmates

CHICAGO – President Barack Obama has commuted prison sentences of five Illinoisans, including three serving life terms for drug crimes.

The Illinois inmates were among 61 drug offenders whose sentences Obama commuted Wednesday. One of the inmates, Jesse Webster of Chicago, is serving a life term for intent to sell cocaine and filing false tax returns. Webster is to be released Sept. 26.

The two others serving life sentences

are Larry Nokes of Quincy and Ismael Rosa of Chicago. Nokes is to be released July 28 and Rosa next March.

Obama also commuted the 30-year sentence of Jose Ramon Rivera of Chicago on heroin counts. Rivera will be released July 28. Ernest Spiller of East St. Louis will be released July 28, too. He faced nearly 30 years for crack cocaine and firearms convictions.

Illinois farmland prices see significant drop in 2015

PEORIA – Illinois farmland prices saw a significant decline last year after the downward price trajectory of grain produced on the land, according to a new report from the Illinois Society of Professional Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers.

The group’s annual farmland value report shows that agriculture acreage across Illinois dropped between 8 percent and 9 percent in 2015.

Land rated “excellent” and “good” both saw an 8 percent decline, selling at $11,737 per acre and $8,756 per acre, respectively. Land rated “average” sold for $6,215 per acre, a 9 percent decline.

Leaders tackle threat of nuclear terrorism

WASHINGTON – Still reeling from attacks in Brussels and Paris, world leaders are wrestling this week with the chilling prospect of the Islamic State group or other extremists unleashing a nuclear attack on a major Western city.

Preventing terrorists from obtaining nuclear materials is the central focus as President Barack Obama hosts leaders from roughly 50 countries for a nuclear security summit starting Thursday. Despite three previous summits and six years of Obama’s prodding, security officials warn that the ingredients for a nuclear device or a “dirty bomb” are alarmingly insecure.

“We know that terrorist organizations have the desire to get access to these raw materials and to have a nuclear device,” said Ben Rhodes, Obama’s deputy national security adviser. Still, the White House said there was no indication of an imminent plot.

Decades after the Cold War, the threat of a nuclear war between superpowers has given way to growing concerns about nonstate actors, including Islamic State and al-Qaida offshoots operating in North Africa and in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Although the U.S. and its allies still worry about North Korea, Obama believes the threat posed by Iran has subsided because of the nuclear deal, leaving extremist groups among the most likely perpetrators.

The havoc such an attack could wreak in an urban area like New York or London is concerning enough that leaders scheduled a special ses-

sion on the threat during the two-day summit.

U.S. officials said the leaders would discuss a hypothetical scenario about a chain of events that could lead to nuclear terrorism.

Those concerns have taken on heightened significance after the March 22 attacks at a Brussels airport and subway station. Last year, authorities searching the apartment of two brothers linked to earlier attacks in Paris found video of a senior official at a Belgian nuclear waste facility. The brothers were part of the Islamic State cell that went on to strike Brussels; both died in the attacks.

On the summit’s sidelines, Obama planned to meet with the leaders of China, South Korea and Japan, who all share U.S. concerns about North Korea’s nuclear program.

Yet other key players will be missing. Russian President Vladimir Putin refused to attend, as Moscow scoffed at what it deemed U.S. efforts to take control of the process. Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif canceled his trip after an Easter bombing killed 72 people.

About 2,000 metric tons of highly enriched uranium and separated plutonium being used in civilian or military programs could be turned into a nuclear bomb if stolen or diverted, the White House said. And fewer than half of the countries participating in the summit have even agreed to secure their sources of radiological material needed for a dirty bomb.

“The policies are moving in the right direction,” said Joe Cirincione, who runs the nuclear security group Ploughshares Fund. “But when you’re fleeing a forest fire, it’s not just a question of direction, it’s a question of speed.”

Call your local legislator, ask why

It’s official: Illinois is the last state government without a budget in America, thanks to a Pennsylvania that was likewise floundering in dysfunction but, unlike Illinois, evidently got tired of it.

Come now, you knew they’d live down to expectations in Springfield, didn’t you?

Indeed, the bar has been so lowered here in the Land of Grave-Spinning Lincoln that it’s impossible to be disappointed by any depth to which Illinois might sink.

Disappointment requires a level of surprise at an unfortunate turn of events. Who’s surprised?

Oh, it has become popular to blame the state’s top political leadership, specifically Gov. Bruce Rauner and House Speaker Michael Madigan, for the budget impasse that is now in its ninth month and still racking up victims. Perhaps it would be the case, if dueling were to be resurrected (inadvisably) from a previous century – unfortunately, the personal animosity seems to have reached that point – and both were of excellent aim, that the way might be cleared for at least a modicum of hope to begin sprouting in Illinois this spring.

But Peoria School District 150 Board Vice President Rick Cloyd may have been on to something earlier this week when, in noting the lack of state government support that has led to an $8 million budget deficit and layoff notices for 170 local teachers, he said that legislators “are not doing their job, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult for us to do ours because of their incompetence and inability to compromise.”

Indeed, Springfield’s willful failures, despite the easy availability of scapegoats, are a team effort.

How could Rauner and Madigan be getting away with letting Illinois crumble were it not for all the enablers from whom they derive their power, who sit on their hands and zip their lips while bills go unpaid and low-income college students drop out and universities fire staff by the hundreds and senior citizens lose their Meals on Wheels and rape crisis centers are cut or close and cancer screenings are slashed and shelters for troubled youth are shut down and unemployment rises and businesses bail and judges effectively run a state government that, remarkably, despite its supposed decision-makers going out of their way to refrain from governing or adopting a budget, is still spending more than it’s taking in to the tune of billions?

How is it possible that a revolt from the rank-and-file is not raging in Springfield at this very moment?

And now we read about how state lawmakers exempt themselves from elements of the Freedom of Information Act that they impose on every other government, all the better to operate in secret, my dear. It is just one outrage after another, after another, after another. ... We don’t get it. We don’t expect to get Rauner or Madigan. But our local lawmakers, people we’ve gotten to know and even like?

Can their constituents – including, say, 170 recently pinkslipped local schoolteachers – possibly call them enough to ask why they’re not screaming on our behalf to their ineffective leaders, why the budget situation in Illinois and all of its awful consequences are evidently OK with them, why they’re “not doing their job”?

Can’t wait for the answers.

U.S. should have national law on GMO labeling Oregonians narrowly – by fewer than 1,000 votes – defeated a ballot measure in 2014 that would have required food manufacturers and retailers to label products that included genetically engineered ingredients.

In the end, however, the measure’s supporters appear on their way to getting what they want, thanks to lawmakers in one of the smallest states in the union.

Major food manufacturers, including Campbell Soup (soup, Pepperidge Farm), ConAgra (Hunts, Peter Pan) and General Mills (cereal, Old El Paso, Yoplait), all have announced recently that they have or will soon begin to include genetic engineering information on product labels.

They’re not doing so because genetic engineering somehow makes their products unsafe, however. It doesn’t, and there’s more than enough science to prove that point.

Some are doing so because lawmak-

ers in Vermont, which has well under 1 million residents, approved a measure to require the labels in that state. It’s cheaper, the companies say, to make the labels universal for products sold in this country than to create and apply special labels for use in Vermont.

And, clearly, they hope Congress will step in and either ban state labeling laws or require them across the country.

Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Portland, thinks that the latter is a great idea. He and three other Senate Democrats recently introduced a bill that would require labeling nationwide.

Realistically, the bill doesn’t stand much chance. The U.S. House did approve a ban on such labeling last summer.

We don’t believe a law requiring GMO labeling is scientifically necessary. But it would be better for Congress to have a national law rather than requirements that only apply in some states.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Other people have seen their financial security reduced because of Obamacare.

Deductibles in employer health plans have been rising fast, leaving many people with policies that – thanks to Obamacare regulations – cover routine medical expenses but leave them on the hook for thousands of dollars in a medical emergency. A sensible insurance policy would have the opposite priorities.

Obama famously said that Obamacare would bring family premiums down by $2,500. That hasn’t happened, of course: Average family premiums for employer coverage went to $17,545 in 2015 from $13,375 in 2009. The administration argues that the law has contributed to a slowdown in the growth of health spending. But that slowdown started in 2002. Obamacare can’t be the cause. The best that can be said about the law’s effect on health spending is that its early years haven’t interrupted that slowdown.

The CBO believes that the law is having a negative effect on employment.

It projects that Americans next year will

work the equivalent of 2 million fewer jobs because of the law. That’s partly because the law’s subsidies decline when people work more. The subsidies thus reduce the rewards to work and induce people to work less.

More Americans dislike Obamacare than like it, which has been the case since before its passage. More think the law has hurt them than think it has helped them. And as flawed as the law already appears, worse days may be ahead for it.

The law’s health exchanges are showing signs of trouble. Enrollees are poorer and older than expected, which means the tax for being uninsured may not be succeeding in its aim of getting healthy people to sign up. If so, the exchanges could prove incapable of sustaining themselves.

Obamacare was supposed to pay for itself, but several features of the law that were meant to bring in revenue have proven as politically unrealistic as critics said. Congress has already suspended the law’s medical-device tax and its tax on high-end, employer-provided insurance plans in a bipartisan deal.

Obamacare was a badly designed law. We could have achieved gains in insurance coverage without Obamacare’s regulation-heavy approach; we could have addressed the healthcare system’s

discrete problems without trying to overhaul it from Washington, D.C. Those without access to employer health plans could have been given enough money to buy a policy that protected them against catastrophic expenses – and that offered more protection if they put some of their own income into the policy. Modest regulatory changes could have been made to make it easier for people with pre-existing conditions to get coverage, too.

Neither Republicans nor Democrats, for different reasons, were interested in going down that path when Obamacare was being debated. Now, belatedly, some Republicans are interested in moving the health system in this direction. The Democratic response to dissatisfaction with Obamacare, on the other hand, is likely to be to blame the law’s failures on healthcare providers and seek tighter regulations of them.

One way or the other, however, Obamacare will probably have to be changed substantially under the next president – even if Democrats, amid their anniversary celebrations, are loath to admit it.

Curing cancer is within reach

One of the most frightening words a patient can hear from a doctor is “cancer.” We know it from the experience of our families and friends, and the millions of Americans who hear it from their doctors each year.

In President Barack Obama’s final State of the Union address, he compared the effort required to eradicate cancer to a “moonshot,” summoning the American ingenuity and scientific pursuits that sent humankind to the moon.

We believe that it’s time for a full and complete national commitment to rid the world of this disease, because the truth is that ending cancer as we know it is finally within our grasp.

A key element of the cancer moonshot is to incentivize more cooperation between the government and the private sector. We recognize that while the U.S. government has tremendous resources at its disposal, we also know a lot of our best expertise exists outside the government, within the private medical and research community. There is little doubt that this will be the site of the next big breakthroughs in cancer treatment. We know

it because we’ve seen it at the world’s best cancer research centers across America, led by the world’s greatest cancer doctors, researchers and philanthropists – many of whom we’ve met with over the past few months.

To that end, and in support of the cancer moonshot, we are thrilled that Johns Hopkins University will create the Bloomberg-Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, thanks to private grants of $125 million. This new institute will build on the school’s groundbreaking work in immunotherapy, one of the most promising avenues of research today.

Here’s why: Cancer involves the uncontrolled growth of our cells. Cancer cells co-opt the processes of normal cells, using them to grow, spread and cloak themselves from detection by the immune system. Immunotherapy seeks to redirect patients’ highly individual immune systems to better detect and destroy cancer cells.

Led by Dr. Drew Pardoll and funded in partnership with the philanthropist Sidney Kimmel, the institute will support the same scientists who performed some of the first clinical trials of immunotherapy agents known as checkpoint blockade inhibitors. These agents interfere with molecules that shield tumor cells from

the body’s immune system. In fact, two of these inhibitors have already been approved by the FDA for use against lung cancer and melanoma, and show promise across almost every cancer.

Discoveries like these inhibitors are what will ultimately make it possible to cure cases of cancer that might have been hopeless just a few short years ago. We know that there’s no silver bullet, and no one expects it to happen overnight. But the truth is that because of exciting advances in science and technology over the past 10 years, we are far closer to major breakthroughs than many people realize.

With the right partnerships, we can bolster the incredible work that is already occurring among immunologists, geneticists and other scientists with new innovations from the technology sector.

Recently, an entire industry has sprung up with the power to process medical and scientific information on a massive scale. This computing power is already allowing researchers to accelerate their progress like never before.

By aggregating big data from cancer studies in one central location that’s accessible to scientists, researchers and physicians, we can further speed up advances in research.

With the cancer moonshot and pub-

lic-private partnerships, we are not trying to make incremental change. We’re looking to make quantum leaps.

Our goal is to make a decade’s worth of medical advances in the next five years. And with new institutions working together and new resources dedicated to the problem, we know we can finally gain the upper hand on a disease that has already robbed the world of far too much talent and love.

The original mission to the moon was a government-led, -directed and -funded initiative. The cancer moonshot will be a true partnership between government, the private sector, academia and the philanthropic community. It has the potential to save millions of lives.

It could prove to be a model for how public-private partnerships can overcome even the most difficult challenges.

And it could turn cancer from a death sentence into a chronic, manageable disease – or in many cases, a curable one – for millions of people around the world.

President Barack Obama and his allies are celebrating the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, on the sixth anniversary of its passage. They said it has provided insurance coverage to millions of Americans and come in below cost.

They are right to claim that many Americans have benefited from the law.

But the benefits are overstated, and the law’s harms look set to rise.

The drop in the number of Americans without insurance is the biggest accomplishment. But that decline has not been as large as originally estimated.

When the law passed, the Congressional Budget Office predicted that by the end of 2015 an additional 15 million people would be getting coverage through Medicaid and 13 million would be getting coverage through the exchanges. Now CBO said that 10 million additional people were on Medicaid, and the administration said that 8.8 million were on the exchanges, in 2015.

Still, those are real gains. The people covered now have a measure of financial security they had not previously enjoyed.

Yet Medicaid coverage does not appear to be associated with significant improvements in recipients’ physical health. And the benefits are low compared with the costs: A recent study found that every dollar spent on the program yielded 20 to

Rough sixth inning dooms Barbs

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Harlem managed just one hit but still scored five runs in a crucial sixth inning Wednesday against the DeKalb baseball team.

The Barbs walked two batters and hit four in the inning – plus committed one of their five errors in the contest – and a last-inning comeback fell short in Harlem’s 8-7 win on a windy day at Dave Pettengell Field.

“We give up five runs in the sixth inning, they get one hit,” DeKalb coach Justin Keck said. “We didn’t pitch well, we weren’t very disciplined at the plate, we didn’t take care of opportunities that were there. You perform like that, you’re not going to come out on

the positive end.”

The Barbs (3-4) grabbed their first lead in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Dani Garcia to go up 4-3.

DeKalb starter Jacob Perkins went back to the mound to start the sixth and got the first batter out, but an error by second baseman Nathan Sisler, a walk and a single led to the tying run crossing the plate. After a hit batter, Perkins was lifted and Sisler came in.

Sisler faced four batters, hitting three and walking another, and the Barbs were down 8-4 by the time he left the game.

Keck said Sisler ran into confidence issues on the mound.

“A lot of our guys, because we’re not winning by 15, they just don’t have the confidence in themselves,” Keck said.

“They have to have the desire and the want-to and the belief to accomplish what all their goals are.”

The Barbs got a run back in the sixth when Derek Kyler looped a ball into right field to score Bryce Wheeler.

In the seventh, Garcia and Joey Sauser walked, then Willis Brei singled to load the bases. Joshua Ottum hit into a double play, but a run scored. Wheeler singled home Brei, but Harlem (5-2) got the final out to hold on for the win.

“That made me feel a little better (after the double play), but you are never out of the woods,” Harlem coach Doug Livingston said. “The way the wind is going, anything can happen. But I’m proud of my team.”

Keck said the Barbs’ push in the seventh was good, but was still lacking

one big hit.

“Obviously, we’re feeling good when we got a chance to get back into it,” Keck said. “They walked the first couple hitters – that helped. You get a nice base hit, now everybody is feeling comfortable and confident, then after that, we couldn’t get another hit to matter so we fell short.”

Sisler went 2 for 4 at the plate with a pair of doubles and scored twice. He missed a home run in the first by about two feet with a blast off the top of the left-field fence. Sauser had three of the Barbs’ 10 hits.

“We capitalized on some of their miscues to score a couple runs and make it interesting,” Keck said. “But you have to find a way to seal the deal and end it.”

Aase, Sycamore softball make big comeback

Not only did the Spartans tie the score, they staged another comeback in the eighth for a 13-12 win Tuesday against Harlem.

Kayley Aase hit a walkoff, two-run blast in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win. She also hit a home run during the Spartans’ comeback in the seventh.

“Kayley Aase had a ‘video game’ type of day,” Sycamore coach Jill Carpenter said. “She doesn’t get all the glory without her teammates doing their fair share, too. Kayley came up in two big spots for us late in the game and did her job both times.”

In the seventh, Anna Criswell started the two-out rally with a double, then Aase hit the home run.

Carpenter said that could sometimes act as a rally killer – once again there were two outs and nobody on, this time the Spartans down three – but Natilee Morey, Kayleigh Reifsteck and Lexi Gordon all got hits, setting up a tying double by Lauren Wisdom.

“I hope this is a turning point game for us where they realize they aren’t out of it until the absolute last out is made,” Carpenter said. “We are learning to compete and we have had a couple of games now where that fight has shown up and allowed us to come away with a win.”

Included in Keegan’s nine hits were a double and homerun. The Warriors are ranked No. 16 in Division III and Keegan’s big weekend came at the Apple Market Classic in St. Joseph, Missouri, where she had seven RBIs and a 1.083 slugging percentage. Keegan didn’t strike out as she went 9 for 12 with four walks.

Augustana (11-5) completed the sweep with an 11-2 win in the nightcap. Ruh had a run and a walk but didn’t get a hit in the second game.

North Park improved to 5-10 with a 7-3 win Saturday against Aurora, as Sycamore alumnus Mitchell Jordan was 1 for 4 with a run scored. The sophomore third baseman has a .264 batting average with three doubles, two triples and eight RBIs.

Winning shortstop job ‘just beginning’ for Rollins

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The White Sox made three roster moves Wednesday, including the optioning of right-hander Scott Carroll to Class AAA Charlotte and outrighting right-hander Jacob Turner to Charlotte. But the third move, while a formality, officially introduced Jimmy Rollins as the team’s Opening Day shortstop.

The Sox purchased the contract of the 37-year-old former National League MVP, who had been signed to a minor-league deal.

Rollins, a former MVP with the Phillies, will be paid $2 million. He will get a fair share of days off, with Tyler Saladino as the backup.

“They’ll be some splitting it up,” manager Robin Ventura said. “I want to make sure Jimmy stays fresh. He’ll probably be the one starting on Monday. But I think where he’s at, it’s better to keep him fresh. I think he’s going to be a better player. At his age, he does well when he’s had these days off, even here.”

“Definitely,” Rollins said. “I know it takes a toll physically. Getting a day or two off here and there does a lot.”

The Sox have 29 players left in major-league camp: 13 pitchers, three catchers, seven infielders and six outfielders. The 40-man roster remains at

37. Turner, who signed a $1.5 million contract as a free agent, cleared waivers after struggling this spring and will remain in the organization.

Rollins has 2,422 hits in a career that began in 2000 with the Philadelphia Phillies.

In his first year out of the organization, he struggled with the Dodgers in 2015 with a .224/.285/.358 slash line over 563 plate appearances, although he did hit 13 homers and contributed 12 stolen bases. While not the player he was in his prime, Rollins provides a heady presence in the middle of the infield and played adequate defense this spring.

“When he’s fresh he’s got some good range,” Ventura said. “He’s making the plays he has to make. Is his range as good as it was early in his career?

No. But he’s pretty good with it right now.”

Bad got worse and concern became panic for the Blackhawks on Wednesday when the NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced that Keith has been offered an in-person hearing for his reckless and dangerous stick-swinging incident Tuesday night that cut the face of Minnesota Wild center Charlie Coyle. That means Keith can be suspended for six or more games. And with only five regular-season games left, the Hawks’ already dicey defense could be a whole lot dicier for the start of the postseason – which

SPORTS BRIEFS NIU softball rallies falls short, lose game at Loyola

The Northern Illinois softball team only completed one game of a doubleheader at Loyola, falling, 9-6, on Wednesday to snap a 14-game winning streak.

The Huskies scored four runs in the top of the seventh behind a grand slam by senior catcher Emily Naegele, her 12th home run of the year. She’s now three away from tying Kayti Grable’s single-second record of 15, which she set last year.

Katie Lamich, Abby Howlett and Bekah Harnish each collected two hits for the Huskies.

Sophomore pitcher Tara Thacker took the loss in the circle, allowing three runs on seven hits in four innings. After jumping out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning, the Huskies allowed three runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

The two teams got to the top of the third inning, with the scored tied at 2, before rain cancelled the rest of the contest.

The Huskies (22-8 overall, 3-0 in MAC West) play their season opener in an important three-game conference series against Kent State (20-7, 3-0 in MAC East),

Lester strikes out 10, homers to lead Cubs over Rockies

MESA, Ariz. – Jon Lester struck out 10 in five innings and hit a two-run home run to lead the Cubs to a 10-0 win over a Colorado Rockies split squad Wednesday.

Lester allowed only one hit and one walk to go along with the 10 strikeouts, which included striking out the side in the third and fourth innings. His homer off Scott Oberg highlighted a seven-run fourth in which the Cubs hammered out two doubles, both by David Ross, and back-to-back home runs by Lester and Kyle Schwarber.

The jury is still out on what forward Nikola Mirotic can be for the Bulls.

The 25-year-old remains an enigma.

He scored a team-high 28 points in 37 minutes in the win Tuesday over the Pacers after totaling 17 points in the previous three games. That was after a 35-point showing against the Knicks last week in which he shot 9 for 13 from beyond the 3-point line.

What does Mirotic need to do to be more consistent?

“That’s a good question,’’ he said. “After I Nikola Mirotic made nine 3s against New York, the next day I didn’t play well. I made zero 3s. So I think it’s more of a challenge. I need to challenge myself to prepare better for the games. Know the players I have to guard.

“I’m still in the process of playing in so many games, especially back-tobacks. I think my game will come, but I need to find a way to play more games like this because I know that my teammates need me. When I have games like this, most of the time we win, so I’m going to really work hard on my-

self, try to get better.’’

They actually don’t win most of the time, but they are better when Mirotic scores. The Bulls are 11-8 this season in games in which he scores 15 points or more.

Mirotic will make $5.5 million this season and $5.7 million next season before becoming a free agent. When the Bulls finally were able to get him to come over from Europe, the idea was he could be part of their foundation.

The team expected a lot from him entering this season, believing coach Fred Hoiberg’s offense would give Mirotic a lift. That hasn’t necessarily happened.

Granted, Mirotic had an appendectomy in January that led to a second surgery to remove a hematoma, forcing him to miss more than a month.

But Mirotic was inconsistent well before that happened.

“Disappointed? No,’’ Mirotic said of his season. “But I know that I can play better, of course, because I know what I can do. But I need to find a way to not have this up and down I had this season and last season. I had my problem with my surgery, but I’m sure that I will improve, especially the more time I’m here. Right now, I need to try and be a regular, everyday [player] because I trust that I can do it.’’

Taste of Home Cooking School show comes to DeKalb April 7

f you’re getting sick of the same old dinner menu, it’s time for a change.

Guy Klinzing, a culinary specialist with Taste of Home Cooking School, will appear at the Egyptian Theatre in downtown DeKalb on April 7. Klinzing will cook eight seasonal spring dishes live on stage.

Audiences can expect to leave with more knowledge about cooking techniques and ingredients, as well as gift bags and new recipes to try at home.

The cooking show recipes come from readers, whose ideas are vetted in the school’s Milwaukee test kitchen. One of the winners this season was a buffalo chicken lasagna, Klinzing said. Recipes on display include an

“These are always interesting shows in historic theaters like this,” he said. “It’s a nice venue for the audience, to be surrounded by comfort and a great deal of beauty. … I’m very excited.”

In fact, traveling to new towns across the country is one of his favorite things about his career, Klinzing said. He mostly drives to his shows, which allows him to experience the local scene and cuisine as well as meet all kinds of interesting people.

“Taste of Home is kind of the perfect storm for me,” he said. “I get to do the three things I love most in life: I get to cook. I get to entertain.

I get to travel. … I’ve gone to places

that are very interesting and at times obscure.”

The event is sponsored nationally by companies like Eggland’s Best, National Honey Board and Cooper Brand, whose items will be included in the gift bag every audience member will receive.

“You can come regardless of skill set,” he said. “Something can be taken away whether you’re a novice cook or someone who has been cooking their entire lives. … You can find a new recipe, gain new skills and learn shortcuts in the kitchen. … It’s not like a lecture. It’s meant to be more fun and engaging.”

Kish College to host Shakespeare presentation DAILY CHRONICLE MALTA – Kishwaukee College will be hosting a presentation by Kevin Rich, artistic director of the Illinois Shakespeare Festival, at 1 p.m. April 7 in the Kishwaukee College Theatre (B1205) on campus.

Community members should park in Lot B (North Lot) and enter through door 56. This event is free and open to the public.

Rich will be presenting on Women and Gender in Shakespeare’s Plays, a discussion that will include the breeches role convention, a history of women as performers in Shakespeare’s plays, and gender-bending as an original Shakespearean practice.

Rich will also share his experience as a director of Shakespeare’s plays. In 2014, the Illinois Shakespeare Festival produced a trilogy of plays focused on gender, including an all-male production of “Much Ado About Nothing.” Rich’s presentation

will include time for a question-and-answer session.

Rich is also a professional actor, director and playwright. He is a member of Actors’ Equity and the Screen Actors’ Guild, and a member of the acting faculty at Illinois State University.

His professional experience includes the Illinois Shakespeare Festival, Milwaukee Shakespeare, Chicago Shakespeare, Kentucky Shakespeare, Shakespeare and Company, Portland Kevin Rich Center Stage, San Jose Rep, Yale Rep, and the American Theatre Company.

He leads workshops in colleges, high schools and theater festivals around the country. He is also a Certified Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework, the 2010 ISF John Stephens Equity Actor, and a recipient of the Oliver Thorndike Acting Award at the Yale School of Drama.

The Illinois Shakespeare Festival is held annually in the summer at Ewing Manor in Normal. The festival stages 36 performances of Shakespeare and additional playwrights each season in a state-of-theart, Elizabethan-style theater.

Athenian Agora Museum in Greece topic of first spring ALPHA lecture DAILY CHRONICLE ALPHA: Friends of Antiquity will host its first spring lecture, “Engaging History: The Athenian Agora Museum in the Stoa of Attalos,” on April 14.

Professor Laura Gawlinsky of Loyola University Chicago will return to ALPHA to discuss the guide to the museum, which she authored, and her longtime association with the excavations of the Athenian Agora.

The lecture will take place at 7:30 p.m. in room 103 of the Jack Arends Visual Arts Building at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

In ancient times, the agora was the civic, cultural, political and philosophical center for the Athenians, where

people gathered to discuss events and ideas.

When the excavators of the Athenian Agora were unable to find a location for an on-site museum to hold the material they were uncovering, a radical solution was proposed: reconstruct one of the ancient buildings on its foundations.

Today, the Stoa of Attalos in Athens, Greece, not only provides ample space for storage, research and the display of objects, but also allows the visitor to experience the function of form of this common type of ancient public building.

The highlights of the museum collection are the unique objects illustrating civic life and the institutions

of the Athenian democracy, and the history of the city from the Neolithic to Byzantine periods is told through burial gifts, domestic decoration and marble portraits.

ALPHA: Friends of Antiquity was founded in 1971 and promotes the importance of ancient civilizations in the areas of archaeology, literature, philosophy, history and art.

All lectures are free and open to the public. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

The Athenian Agora Museum in Greece will be the topic of a lecture at Northern Illinois University on April 14.

NEW YORK – The Broadway smash “Hamilton,” which has been cheered for reclaiming the nation’s founding story by a multicultural cast, has oddly come under fire for specifically seeking “nonwhite men and women” for upcoming roles in future versions.

That went too far for the Actors’ Equity Association union, which said Wednesday that the show’s language was not official or in compliance with their rules.

The show responded by saying it regretted the confusion and will amend the notice to add that “we welcome people of all ethnicities to audition.”

No such outcry was heard when the show was first being mounted, which called specifically for nonwhite actors to play the likes of Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, Aaron Burr, Thomas Jefferson and Eliza Hamilton. Only the role of King George III was supposed to be filled by a white man.

“Hamilton” producers said such a stance adheres to the accepted practice that certain characteristics in certain roles constitute a legal and “bona fide occupational qualification.” Other shows also cast with ethnicity in mind.

Since it opened off-Broadway last year, the show has been celebrated for putting minorities at the center of America’s birth. The show’s African-American, Asian and Latino actors have been cheered by President Barak Obama, British actress Helen Mirren and many others.

The latest snag occurred when the show posted on its website a call for “nonwhite men and women, ages 20s to 30s, for Broadway and upcoming tours.” Equity, which usually reviews casting notices, said it had not in this case.

“Our audition rules are created to provide the broadest access possible for our members to be seen for roles,” the union said.

The show is by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the show’s book, music and lyrics, and stars in the title role. It stresses the orphan, immigrant roots of Hamilton and has a varied score, ranging from pop ballads to gospel to R&B. A Chicago production will open this fall and a national tour will travel to San Francisco and Los Angeles in 2017.

Remove hazards to prevent falls Dear Dr. K: I have osteoporosis, so my bones are going to break more easily. My doctor told me I therefore should try to avoid falls, but he didn’t say how. Any ideas?

Dear Reader: A tumble can send a person with osteoporosis down the road to disability. Many factors can increase your risk for falls. Some have to do with your physical condition; others come from the environment. There is much you can do to reduce both types of risks.

I’ve put some questions for you to ask yourself on my website, www.askdoctork. com. They can help you get a general sense of your risk of falling.

If your risk is high, consider strength and balance training. Focus on exercises that use the muscle groups required for the things you do in real life – getting out of a chair, climbing stairs or reaching a high shelf, for example.

Activities such as yoga and tai chi improve balance and coordination as well as core strength. There is some evidence they may help to prevent falls. Many of the movements done in these activities – lunging, stepping, turning and reaching – are similar to the movements we need to remain independent.

You also can take steps to decrease the impact of health-related issues on your risk of falls: • Pain. Chronic pain can hamper your mobility, throw you off balance or make it difficult to maintain your balance. Talk to your doctor about pain medications that won’t increase your risk of falls.

• Poor vision. It’s easy to trip or lose your balance when you can’t make out the edge of a stair or recognize an object in your path. Have an annual vision exam, and discuss your concerns about falling with your eye doctor.

Finally, most falls occur in the home.

The following measures can minimize your risk: • Improve lighting. Make sure all areas of your home are well illuminated. Use nightlights to mark hallways and the bathroom.

• Provide handholds. Install grab bars in the bathroom, by the bath and shower.

They can help you keep from falling when you are standing on a slippery surface.

• Remove obstacles and hazards. Clear away clutter from the floors. Keep cords and cables near the walls where you can’t trip on them. Secure area rugs and use grip mats for traction in the bathtub.

The average home is full of hazards.

And as we age, we often develop physical problems. You can work on both fronts.

You can improve your physical limitations, and you can remove and replace many of the hazards.

How do I talk to my husband about putting his dog “Sunny” to sleep? My husband is the most loving, caring, generous person I have ever met, and I don’t know how to tell him it’s time to let his best friend go.

Sunny is 15½ years old and barely can walk because of bad hips. The poor thing can see only shadows and is almost completely deaf. He has been like this for the past two years and is deteriorating steadily.

I’m trying to be understanding and supportive. I bought reusable diapers when Sunny no longer could control his bowels and bladder. I carry him outside multiple times a day and hold him up so he can urinate without the diaper. I wash him regularly after he soils himself. It is very sad.

It is difficult to bring this up with my husband because he knows I’m frustrated with constantly cleaning up and washing bedding after there has been an accident. I don’t want him to think I want him to put the dog to sleep just because it is difficult. It’s just time.

Sunny’s quality of life is zero. The only thing he can do is eat and sleep. Am I wrong? What should I say to my husband to put the poor animal out of his misery? – It’s Time, In Reno Dear It’s Time: Your husband is doing his best friend no favor by letting him linger this way.

What’s going on now isn’t fair to Sunny or to you.

Suggest he contact Sunny’s veterinarian and talk to him/her about his beloved dog’s condition, because I’m pretty sure the vet will agree with me. Then be prepared, because your husband may be so bonded with Sunny he will need grief counseling after his dog is no more.

Dear Readers: A group of distinguished psychiatrists, the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry (GAP), needs help from some of you.

They need feedback from gay, bisexual or transgender people, many of whom have experienced conflicts with their faith because of who they are attracted to or their gender identity. Many, while attempting “conversion” treatment, experienced great emotional distress, but never considered consulting a mental health professional because they had been discouraged from doing so by their faith community. Knowing the struggles you have experienced could benefit individuals who need help and haven’t gotten it. Your input is important. It will give GAP psychiatrists a broader representation of people than they could get from any other source.
