McCullough case no longer a sure thing POLL People seem so sure.

They say Jack McCullough is a sociopath who definitely kidnapped and murdered Maria Ridulph in 1957 and finally got caught when his alibi fell apart. Or they say he’s the innocent victim of police and prosecutors who set him up.

Before DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack’s announcement last week that McCullough WAS innocent, I would have said I thought they got the right guy. Today, I don’t know.

Some have said that publicly unraveling the case against McCullough is a political move by Schmack. But it’s hard to see how pushing to throw out a conviction in the most infamous case in county history will score him political points. It’s more likely he’s alienated a good portion of the public.

People cheered this verdict in 2012. They wanted this over. They thought it was.

We’ve still yet to hear much on the record from people who were instrumental in putting McCullough away in the first place.

Former State’s Attorney Clay Campbell has been conspicuously silent. Illinois State Police investigator Brion Hanley was named the state police 2013 Officer of the Year for his

I hope that eventually Campbell and Hanley will speak out. People want to hear what they have to say. Schmack has savaged their work and shaken some people’s faith in the justice system.

There will be more time, though. McCullough will be in prison at least for weeks yet – his next court hearing isn’t until April 15, when the national media circus may once again be in town.

Even though both McCullough and the state agree that he is innocent and should be released, all he won today was the a court-appointed lawyer.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – A Delta Air Lines employee sneaked $282,000 in a backpack into Palm Beach International Airport with instructions to deliver it to a passenger in a restroom, federal officials said.

Jean Yves Selius, 29, of Boynton Beach was arrested Saturday after an airport security officer saw him using his security badge to enter the boarding area of the terminal from the tarmac, bypassing the security gates, according to an affidavit filed by Homeland Security agent Jon A. Longo. Selius was dressed in civilian clothes and not his Delta gate agent uniform.

The security officer asked Selius to open his

backpack, which held several packets of cash wrapped in clear, vacuum-sealed bundles, Longo wrote. A Palm Beach County sheriff’s dog detected drug residue on the backpack, the affidavit says.

Longo wrote that he and another agent interviewed Selius, who told them he was being paid $900 to $1,000 by two men he knows only as “Ricky” and “John” to deliver the backpack to an unknown passenger in a bathroom, who would take the money to New York City’s LaGuardia Airport. Selius allegedly told the agents he had made four previous deliveries, receiving $3,900 from the pair and he realized the money didn’t “come from a good cause.”

Judge Brady rules too soon for victim’s family to file any civil proceeding

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Jack McCullough will be appointed a lawyer in his quest to prove his innocence, but will remain in incarcerated while he does, a judge ruled Tuesday.

McCullough, 76, will next go before DeKalb County Judge William Brady on April 15, at which point a timeline will be set for the conclusion of McCullough’s petition for post-conviction relief. Brady cannot make any rulings, however, until McCullough, who is serving a life sentence at the Pontiac Correctional Center, has had a chance to talk to a lawyer.

Members of both the McCullough and Ridulph families watched as McCullough made his first courtroom appearance since DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack announced he believes McCullough is innocent of the 1957 murder of Maria Ridulph.

McCullough will be appointed an attorney by the end of the week to help him through the rest of his post-conviction proceedings, Brady said. McCullough has been steadfast in maintaining his innocence since his 2011 arrest, a claim he reiterated at Tuesday’s hearing.

Schmack last week responded to McCullough’s petition for post-conviction relief by outlining his belief McCullough was wrongfully convicted in 2012.

Maria was 7 years old when she was abducted while playing near the intersection of Archie Place and Center Cross Street in Sycamore. McCullough fell under intense suspicion only in 2008 after his halfsister Jan Tessier came forward to tell investigators that her mother had implicated McCullough in the crime in a deathbed confession.

After months of poring over evidence related to Maria Ridulph’s disappearance, including information barred from being introduced during trial, Schmack said Friday that newly obtained AT&T phone records placed McCullough in Rockford at the time Maria was reported to have gone missing.

Schmack also alleged his predecessor, Clay Campbell, bypassed his ethical obligations and knowingly allowed false testimony that placed Maria’s abduction earlier in the day.

“They needed memories and emotions of children 55-plus years later, talking about when they had dinner to change that timeline,” O’Connor said.

“But to change that timeline of the abduction, you have to discount 20-plus people: neighbors, family.”

Police found Maria’s body April 26, 1958, in Jo Daviess County, nearly five months after she went missing.

Worried the man sentenced to life in prison for killing his 7-year-old sister could walk free, Charles Ridulph filed a request Monday for a special prosecutor to handle the remainder of McCullough’s post-conviction relief petition proceedings. However, Brady ruled it was too soon for Ridulph to file anything.

Judge: McCullough freedom not guaranteed as process continues

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A judge on Tuesday said he plans to appoint an attorney to represent the man convicted of killing a Sycamore girl in 1957, but stressed that the court process could take time and freedom wasn’t guaranteed despite a stunning reversal by the prosecutor.

Jack McCullough, 76, was frustrated when it became clear he was not going to be released, and reminded the judge that he has been imprisoned since he was arrested in 2011.

“I’m innocent and I can prove I’m innocent,” he said. “There has to be an end to this somewhere.”

DeKalb County Judge William Brady said during a half-hour hearing that he would appoint a lawyer to represent McCullough by the end of the week and continued the case to April 15. The judge didn’t address DeKalb County’s State’s Attorney Richard Schmack’s recent claim that McCullough had been wrongfully convicted in 2012 of the murder of Maria Ridulph.

“The court is not going to be addressing that portion of the petition or the content of the state’s response,” Brady said in front of courtroom packed with about 60 people. “Suffice to say, that that particular case is in a position for

further pleadings – those pleadings are not yet of record – someone has to ask the court to do something pursuant to that and no one has done so as of yet.

We’ll see what happens down the road on that portion.”

Brady said McCullough’s petition for post-conviction relief would take time.

McCullough, who is 76 and serving a life sentence at Pontiac Correctional Center, asked the judge how long it would take.

“I’m not a seer, I cannot tell you with any certainty how long it will take,” Brady said. “I have a process to follow and part of the process is to make sure your rights are protected as well as everybody else’s.”

Brady said the issue wasn’t “blackand-white” and would require further review.

“There’s no way that this court or any court could be in a position to move forward without further review of all the pleadings that are on file,” Brady said. “You have a right to file what you want to file, you have the right to be heard. But that doesn’t mean you’re going to get the relief that you are seeking. The process will determine what the end result is.”

After the hearing, Schmack said he didn’t plan to take further action on the case before April 15.

Georgia Jean Osha Wellman, 75, of Washington, Indiana, formerly of DeKalb, died on Friday, March 18, 2016, at her home.

Born March 15, 1941, in Washington, the daughter of George and Fleta Osha, she attended Washington schools, graduating in 1959. She attended Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana, where she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1964.

During her time at Indiana State, she met John F. “Jack” Wellman of Portage, Indiana.

They married in 1962, in Terre Haute. During their 18-year marriage, they had two sons, John, born in 1963, and Jay, born in 1969.

She and her husband continued their education at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana, where she earned a Master of Education degree in 1967.

After moving to DeKalb, Illinois, in 1969, Jean was a tax accountant at H&R Block, as well as at the accounting offices of Arthur Krupp and Robert Clausen. She also taught accounting courses at Kishwaukee College and was an enrolled agent to practice before the Internal Revenue Service.

In 1990, she moved from Illinois back to southwest Indiana, first to Terre Haute, then to Vincennes and finally back to Washington, where she lived in the house where she was raised. She continued to do tax returns for a small group of friends, family and long-term clients until she died.

Jean enjoyed cooking and sewing and for years sold her handmade clothing at various craft shows throughout the area. She enjoyed being involved with the reunions of her Washington Hatchets Class of 1959 and with Homecoming events involving her Gamma Phi Beta sisters at Indiana State.

She is survived by her two sons, John of Las Vegas and Jay (Stacey) of Dublin, Ohio; nieces, Debbie, Donna and Anita; nephews, Joe and Scott; and grandchildren, Jordan, Jessica, Patrick and Nicholas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her two brothers, Donald and Robert.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m.

Thursday at Oak Grove Cemetery in Washington.

After objections, ARTigras parade route altered

DeKALB – City officials want to foster cultural activities downtown, but they don’t think an arts parade that closes down Lincoln Highway is the right way to do that.

The DeKalb City Council this week shot down a proposal from organizers of the ARTigras event to once again hold an parade on the main drag downtown in May. Instead, the parade will be rerouted to less busy streets nearby.

ARTigras was held for the first time last year, and this year the arts-focused festival is planned to span two days, May 6 and 7, both on the Northern Illinois University campus and in downtown DeKalb. The festival will

include a parade, a post-parade party and art gallery shows and receptions as well as an opening night “March to Bourbon Street” event at the Egyptian Theatre.

The parade was proposed to take place May 7 in the heart of downtown DeKalb, along Lincoln Highway from First to Fourth Street.

But some local merchants took issue with that plan, saying that road closures can be bad for business, something they can ill afford, especially on a Saturday afternoon. The parade would close Lincoln Highway for about 45 minutes, said Ellen Divita, the city’s community development director.

Christie Carter, who owns Carter’s Cottage Interiors in downtown DeKalb, said that her business peaks

around 1 p.m. on Saturdays and dies off around 3:30 p.m., which makes afternoon road closures problematic because fewer people come through the door and may avoid the area all together.

“Anytime that the roads are closed, they are generally posted at 12:30 or 1 p.m.” she said. “And that is just a further detriment to how we do business on Route 38.”

Council members approved an amendment to allow the parade to take place on Locust Street between First and Fourth Streets instead, with 4th Ward Alderman Bob Snow voting against it.

Mayor John Rey said that it was a complicated issue to navigate, with many differing options to weigh.

“Hearing that the [organizers] of

ARTigras were accepting of an alternate, I am comfortable with [the change,] ” Rey said.

Rey said he didn’t necessarily think it was a good idea to downgrade the arts event by not allowing it to take place on the main road as most other DeKalb parades do, but he understood the business owners’ concern.

The event is scheduled to take place in May, so nothing is likely to change with the festival this year, but the discussion prompted considerations for next year, he said.

“Potentially, the event could be moved to an evening hour where it would have less impact,” Rey said.

“But it was also pointed out that merchants could perhaps become a more integral part of ARTigras.”

Prosecutors drop ‘revenge porn’ charge against IceHogs’ Ross

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Prosecutors dropped a felony charge filed against a Blackhawks prospect Tuesday after determining he was in another state at the time he allegedly distributed a private, sexual video of a Sycamore woman.

Garret E. Ross, 23, of the 6500 block of Springbrook Road, Rockford, was accused of using an explicit video of the woman to get revenge on her because he blamed her for his girlfriend breaking up with him.

DeKalb County As- Garret E. sistant State’s Attorney Ross Stephanie Klein filed a motion Tuesday that said the charge was dropped “due to the court lacking jurisdiction over acts alleged in [the] complaint,” according to court records. Judge Robbin Stuckert ordered that the Ross’s $500 bond be returned.

“I was disappointed, but knew that this was a possibility,” the victim said Tuesday.

The victim, who lives in Sycamore, said she felt threatened by Ross and says she plans to file a report in Michigan, which she noted doesn’t have as strict a law as Illinois. The Chronicle is not using the woman’s name because she was the victim of what police said was a crime.

She also said she would watching to see how the Blackhawks would respond going forward.

Ross is a left-winger in his third season with the Rockford IceHogs, the Hawks’ AHL affiliate. The Hawks announced last week that he had been suspended from the team until the legal issues were resolved.

The victim contacted Sycamore police in September because she was concerned about a private video she made in January being sent to other men. She told authorities the video was meant only for a man she was dating at the time, another IceHogs player who has not been charged, court records show.

The victim told police Ross was angry with her and suspected she told his then-girlfriend he was using a dating app to cheat on her, court records show. Ross sent the pornographic video Aug. 31 from his phone to the woman, who then feared it had been sent to other men without her permission.

Former Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signed a measure in December 2014 making the nonconsensual distribution of private sexual images a felony.

Ross’ attorney, John Palmer, was not immediately available to comment and Sycamore police Cmdr. Michael Anderson referred questions to the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Klein couldn’t immediately be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.

Toy boats have been popular for hundreds of years. There were carved wooden sail boats, tin models of paddle-wheel boats, ocean liners and military fleets made by the 19th century. By the 20th century many were made with mechanisms that pushed them across the water. Or there were simple floating “pond” boats.

The exploding boat wasn’t made until the early 1900s. It was a toy made of blocks of wood and came with a submarine or cannon that could shoot a wooden “torpedo” at the side of the boat and blow the wooden blocks apart. The first of these was a 12-inch battleship and cannon set made by Baker and Bennett of New York about 1905 called “Exploding Battleship Builder.” Schoenhut made a similar toy in 1915 called the “Naval War Game.” It was a boxed set with a ship, submarines and three torpedoes. The mechanisms were simple. Each ship had a hollow spot in the lowest wooden section where a mousetrap was set. When the torpedo hit the ship’s side, the trap was sprung and the boat came apart in a noisy “explosion.”

Homemade versions were made following printed instructions in a 1935 Popular Science magazine.

And in the 1950s, a similar plastic toy was made. The early exploding B & B toy set, 16 pieces and the box, sold at a James Julia auction in Fairfield, Maine, in 2015 for $237.

*** Q: We bought an arts and craftsstyle home, which was built in 1913 in a historic district of San Diego. There is a round circle of brass about two inches in diameter in the middle of the dining-room floor. There are three holes in the brass for prongs to be inserted.

Could it have been a servant’s bell?

A: Servants’ bells were used to summon servants in homes built for the wealthy. By the early 20th century, bells were electric and were wired from various rooms in the house to the servants’ area.

The bell in the middle of the diningroom floor would have been near the head of the dining-room table.

Wires from the bell led to the kitchen. Someone sitting at the table could step on the bell to call a servant to bring the next course. The holes in the brass may be where the bell or the wires were attached to the plate in the floor. *** Q: We have a dresser with a label that reads “Globe-Bosse World Furniture Co.” When was that company in business?

“It’s appropriate to have a special prosecutor when the state’s attorney or the attorney general is personally interested in the outcome of a case in a financial way, or because he or she is the defendant or victim, or some member of the family or the state’s attorney’s office is a victim, defendant or witness,” Schmack said. “Those are the appropriate times when a special state’s attorney is appointed, not because other people who are connected with the case disagree with the determination of the state’s attorney.”

Charles Ridulph said he understood the judge’s decision, but has plans to hire a lawyer to represent his family, a victim’s right he said they only recently discovered.

“Your honor, what alarms me the most about Mr. Schmack’s failure to inform us of this absolute right to counsel, is the question of why he would not have done so,” Charles Ridulph said in a statement he intended to read in court, but was not permit-

ted. “To have abandoned Maria is one issue, but to bind our hand and to further silence us is disturbing to say the least!”

McCullough was one of more than 100 people who were briefly suspects after Maria’s disappearance. But the case went cold for decades until McCullough’s half sister, Jan Tessier, told Illinois State Police about a deathbed confession from their mother in 1994 that named McCullough as the murderer. Another of McCullough’s halfsisters, Mary Hunt, also was called to testify about that event, by McCullough’s defense at the 2012 trial.

“He’s a sociopath and he thinks he’s the smartest man in the room,” Hunt said. “He has done this his entire life. He destroys whatever’s in his path. It doesn’t surprise me that he thought the judge today would say, ‘You’ve been a good boy and everybody was wrong.’ ” Even amid the commotion of the case’s potential reopening, Ridulph said he has never feared the memory of his sister would be forgotten.

“I do not worry about that, because this community has been so supportive,” he said. “I received calls and emails this morning offering prayers.

Maria is not being forgotten. I have no fears of that.”

DeKALB – A Chicago-based civilrights activist praised some of the local efforts to address a few racial issues, but said that without a collective, public rejection of a hangman’s noose at Northern Illinois University, his organization could host demonstrations here in the coming weeks. “[I’m] trying to get all of us to come together on the steps of city hall to denounce the presence of the noose and let’s move to a more positive thing,” said the Rev. James Dukes, president of the Illinois chapter of the National Action Network. “The mayor is all in, as far as the public announcement. The university is a little hesitant.”

Dukes held a public community forum Tuesday at the DeKalb Public Library aimed at discussing local race relations, including NIU’s response to a worker’s 2012 claim that he found a hangman’s noose in his work space.

The faith leader and activist also mentioned the incidents at DeKalb High School surrounding the Feb. 24 Black History Month assembly.

Gaura pointed out that inclusion was one of the things residents called for action on. The city recently used a series of community and resident discussions to narrow a host of concerns down to five visions, as part of its strategic plan.

“The fact that the vision of inclusiveness is one of those speaks volumes, that the community wants us to look at that issue, focus on that issue, move forward on that issue,” the city manager said. “It’s one of the priorities for the city and the City Council.”

Kirk meets with Supreme Court nominee

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Mark Kirk on Tuesday became the first Republican senator to meet with Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland, criticizing GOP leaders’ refusal to hold confirmation hearings or a vote on the longtime federal judge and praising him as “one of the most eminent jurists in the country.”

There was no sign the session would erode Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s insistence on leaving the vacancy unfilled until President Barack Obama’s replacement names a selection next year. Even so, Kirk’s 20-minute session with Garland provided Democrats with a visual image – and words – that they hope will pressure other Republican senators to end their blockade.

“I think when you just say I’m not going to meet with him and all, that’s too closed-minded,” Kirk told reporters, all but explicitly rebuking McConnell, R-Ky. Kirk, who represents Democratic-leaning Illinois, is perhaps the most imperiled Senate Republican facing re-election in November. And when it comes to the battle over Obama’s pick to fill the court vacancy, Kirk has been one of the earliest and most outspoken outliers.

Rauner, unions keep fighting over fees after court ruling

CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner on Tuesday called a U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing labor unions to collect fees from nonmembers “tragic” and said he’ll keep working to ban the practice in Illinois and elsewhere.

Illinois legislation would let cities share taxpayer data

SPRINGFIELD – Legislation is pending in Springfield that would let Illinois municipalities share sensitive financial data with third-party vendors hired to track uncollected taxes.

Democratic state Sen. Michael Hastings of Tinley Park introduced the measure to encourage these business relations, which can be more cost-effective, and are used by Springfield and other cities to track revenue owed to them.

Cover crops getting new attention in central Illinois

PEORIA – Cover crops are growing in popularity in central Illinois as a way to preserve nutrients in soil and purity in water runoff.

These secondary crops, such as oats, canola and cereal rye, were once planted after the main harvest to provide feed for livestock. But the (Peoria) Journal Star reported that the cover crops are gaining fresh attention for their natural ability to improve soil structure and keep nutrients in place.

That vote upheld a lower court ruling allowing a government employees union to collect dues from nonmembers, a fight they all but certainly would have lost were Scalia still a justice.

That ruling prompted Carrie Severino, chief counsel for the Judicial Crisis Network, to warn that confirmation of Garland would create “a new liberal majority that will dominate the court’s decisions for a generation.”

Democrats have insisted that the Senate go through the regular confirmation process for Garland, currently chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Warmer weather means insects hatching earlier

The Pekin Daily Times reported that the early hatch of insects could be welcome news for agriculture because there will be less for insects to eat.

Tazewell County Farm Bureau Manager Doug Godke said the early hatch could mean insects die off without enough food. Certain types of beetles can eat foliage on soybeans and the silk on corn plants resulting in poor harvests.

Jupiter, Florida, police determined that probable cause existed to file a criminal complaint against the Republican front-runner’s most trusted political adviser, Corey Lewandowski, in connection with an altercation that took place after a campaign appearance earlier in the month. Police on Tuesday morning issued Lewandowski a notice to appear before a judge on May 4 for the misdemeanor charge, which carries up to a year in jail.

The unexpected development injects a court battle into an already contentious Republican primary season just a week before a high-stakes election in Wisconsin. It came on a day that all five presidential contenders campaigned in the state, overshadowing Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s endorsement of Ted Cruz and Bernie Sanders’ push to narrow Hillary Clinton’s delegate lead.

Speaking to reporters on his airplane in Wisconsin on Tuesday, Trump vowed to stand by his campaign manager and lashed out at the young female reporter who conveyed the

incident to police.

“How do you know those bruises weren’t there before?” the New York businessman charged.

“I’m not going to let a person’s life be destroyed,” Trump said of Lewandowski. “No jury, in my opinion, would convict a man and destroy a man’s life over what you witnessed.”

Police charged Lewandowski after reviewing a surveillance video of the incident, obtained from security at the Trump-owned property. Police determined the video shows Lewandowski grabbing Michelle Fields, who worked for Breitbart News at the time, as she tried to ask Trump a question after a March 8 appearance.

The Trump campaign said Lewandowski would plead not guilty and “is completely confident that he will be exonerated.”

Trump on Tuesday reversed a previous position that the incident never happened, suggesting instead that Lewandowski was trying to block Fields from “grabbing and asking questions.”

“She was grabbing me. Does that mean I’m supposed to file charges against her?” Trump told reporters. He said Fields exaggerated her original statement that Lewandowski “grabbed me tightly by the arm and yanked me down.”

The video appears to show him yanking her backward.

There is no time for delay with the McCullough case

Last week, DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack cast a long shadow of doubt over a case the people of Sycamore thought was settled.

In 2012, when McCullough was convicted in the 1957 kidnapping and murder of 7-year-old Maria Ridulph, some in the courtroom cheered.

There was at last a sense of closure to a mystery that had lingered in the minds of many people for decades.

That closure is a hard thing to give up, especially after McCullough’s guilt has been determined and affirmed by several judges.

But Schmack said new evidence – a telephone record showing McCullough was in Rockford at 6:57 p.m. the night of the crime – and old FBI reports from 1957 and ’58 that were excluded from McCullough’s trial prove that an innocent man is in prison.

Schmack, on behalf of the People of the State of Illinois, says in court documents that those who brought these charges against McCullough in 2011 engaged in an “almost systematic concealment of the truth.” He said they guided witnesses toward conclusions they wanted, and misled judges and grand juries when they knew or should have known that it was impossible for McCullough to have committed this crime.

These statements by the county prosecutor need to be vetted, and quickly. If they are true, McCullough needs to be released as quickly as possible. We expect to see progress at McCullough’s April 15 hearing.

Endless continuances in this case are not acceptable.

Even those convinced of McCullough’s guilt admit the case against him was unusual, and had some weaknesses. Prosecutors had no murder weapon and no physical evidence tying McCullough to the crime.

They relied on testimony from people about events that had occurred as long as 55 years earlier. Jailhouse in-

formants, including one who testified anonymously, said McCullough had confessed. In convicting McCullough, Kane County Associate Judge James Hallock said he found the testimony credible.

Usually in a criminal case, police reports provide most of the important information. In this case, prosecutors successfully argued that FBI reports compiled when the crime was committed should be excluded at trial on the basis that they were hearsay and the people who made them could not be cross-examined.

Judges in the 2nd District Appellate Court agreed with this, and found that the reports would not have vindicated McCullough even if they had been introduced.

Schmack clearly disagrees. He said those reports show it’s impossible for McCullough to have done it, and he’s saying it on behalf of the people.

We can’t ignore this, but neither can we simply accept that with a single court filing, Schmack can undo years of police investigation, witness testimony, and judges’ rulings.

In his response, there is evidence Schmack corresponded with the public defender’s office, but no evidence of his communicating with the police investigators and prosecutors he maligns. Witnesses such as Charles Ridulph said Schmack showed little interest in what they had to say.

We agree that Schmack’s findings should be tested, just as those of his predecessor were tested by a grand jury, a criminal court and an appellate court.

However, Schmack is the people’s prosecutor and he is saying loudly and clearly that McCullough is innocent. Unless it becomes clear he’s wrong, McCullough must be released, and quickly.

This is the foundation upon which our justice system is built and it must not be compromised.

One senator holding up relief for Flint water crisis

Michigan’s Democratic Sens. Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters have bipartisan support for a $220 million bill to fix and replace lead contaminated pipes in Flint and other cities.

But one senator, Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah, so far has not allowed the matter to come up for a vote. Lee’s chief objection? He saidMichigan has a budget surplus and does not need federal money to fix the problem.

So ask yourself this: If the Flint water crisis were occurring in Lee’s home state of Utah, and not in Michigan, do you for one second think he would say the same thing if Utah also had a budget surplus?

No way.

This is politics, pure and simple, and it is hurting people in a city that has already paid too high a price for government inaction and ineptness.

Stabenow and U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, who represents Flint, are running out of patience with Lee. “This is not an abstraction. This is 100,000 kids and adults all suffering every single day and it’s pretty frustrating,” Kildee said in an Associated Press story.

“We will not give up, that’s for sure.”

And Stabenow said that Flint residents have a right to assume “that when you get up in the morning and turn on the faucet, when you take a shower or you feed your children, clean water is going to come out of the pipes. We all assume that. That is pretty much a basic human right.”

Lee apparently is concerned about adding to the federal deficit.

“What’s really happening here is that Washington politicians are using the crisis in Flint as an excuse to funnel taxpayer money to their own home states, and trying to sneak it through the Senate without proper debate and amendment.

I respectfully object,” Lee said in a statement.

But the fact is the Flint legislation would be paid for using $250 million in unspent Energy Department money, so concerns about adding to the deficit seem without merit.

This dispute over the Senate bill needs to be resolved. The people of Flint have suffered long enough. Pass the legislation, now.

But the failure of the people is not the failure of the ideal. This is a truth some of us hold to when our country disappoints and I commend it to you.

America belongs to all of us. And America is worth believing in.

Even when Americans let you down.

Americans struggle to see themselves as middle class

As the presidential primary season continues, much has been made of the appeal that candidates Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders hold for the angry, disaffected working class.

Everyone seems to agree that this group is in trouble, and needs serious help.

But which Americans exactly are part of the working class? There is no set definition. You can define class by wealth, but a young worker starting out on Wall Street and earning relatively little is hardly lower-class. You can define it by income, although that will be distorted by local differences in the cost of living, and by age (retirees have little income but usually more wealth). You also can define it by educational status.

But perhaps the most important definition is in people’s minds. Gallup periodically asks people to place themselves in one of five classes – upper, upper-middle, middle, working and lower.

The percentages of Americans who consider themselves working class has stayed relatively stable. But

the self-identified middle class has plunged by about 10 percentage points, matched by an even larger increase in the percentage of Americans who label themselves lower class.

Why do fewer Americans identify as middle class? One obvious possibility is that the middle class has been spreading out, separating into a wellto-do upper-middle and an expanding working class. The evidence shows that something like this has been happening for decades now.

Income inequality has been steadily increasing since 1970, with especially big jumps in the early 1980s and early 1990s. That certainly seems likely to reduce the share of people who feel like they’re in the middle.

But we don’t see a divergence – what we really see is a downward drift. Why? Perhaps slow growth has made everyone in the U.S. more pessimistic. Or perhaps inequality itself lowers everyone’s perception of their own class. People making $25,000 might compare themselves to people making $50,000, but people making $400,000 might compare themselves to people making $2 million. One development is that the difference between the working and upper-middle classes

incomes has widened, but the gap between the upper middle and the rich has absolutely exploded. .

But there are problems with this explanation as well – it gets the timing wrong. The strange thing is that if we look back to the 1980s and 1990s, when incomes within the middle-class were diverging rapidly, we see very little change in class identification. The General Social Survey shows that the percent of Americans identifying as working class held steady throughout those decades. Gallup’s data indicates that class identification in general held steady all the way up through 2008 – the sudden increase in the lower class, and the drop in the middle class, happened after the financial crisis and the Great Recession.

Were Americans tricking themselves all that time? Did bubbles in the stock and housing markets distract them from the fact that their incomes had stagnated? Did unsustainable borrowing allow working and lower-class Americans to keep up their consumption levels for a little while, delaying the day of reckoning?

That seems very possible. Another possibility is that class identification

is really a measure of risk. Even if your family makes $180,000 a year, well above the national median, it might be hard to think of yourself as upper-middle class if you could be fired at any time, or if one medical emergency could send you into bankruptcy. A large number of high-earning Americans live paycheck to paycheck. The U.S.’s dysfunctional health care system makes medical emergencies a much bigger financial threat than in countries such as Canada or Britain. And the enormous layoffs in the Great Recession drove home just how insecure many Americans’ jobs are – in contrast to Japan, where companies cut wages to keep people employed through slowdowns.

Whatever the reason, the shift in class identification is real. This may be why politicians are focusing less on economic opportunity and more on fear.

An open letter to American Muslims: In April 1944, a Cpl. Rupert Trimmingham wrote the editor of Yank, a U.S. Army magazine, about what happened when he and eight fellow soldiers, traveling by train, had an overnight layover in a small Louisiana town. They went to get coffee, but no restaurant would serve African-American soldiers except the one at the depot. And it required that they go into the kitchen.

“But that’s not all,” wrote Trimmingham. That morning at 11:30, “about two dozen German prisoners of war, with two American guards, came to the station. They entered the lunchroom, sat at the tables, had their meals served, talked, smoked, in fact, had quite a swell time. DeKalb plays tight defense in 3-0 loss

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – After giving up only one goal in their first two matches of the season, the Barbs gave up three to Boylan Catholic and lost, 3-0, on Tuesday in DeKalb.

“We definitely wanted to stay compact tonight,” Barbs coach P.J. Hamilton said.

“But it’s hard to get back into a match when you’re down early, but this was a good learning opportunity for us.”

Boylan scored only three minutes into the first half, but the Barb defense tightened and kept the score 1-0 at halftime. The Titans came out and scored two goals within 39 seconds early in the second half, to stretch the lead to 3-0.

“Scoring early helped us,” Titan head coach Mark Couper said. “I thought DeKalb came out with some energy in the second half there, so scoring those two quick goals really put the momentum back in our

favor.”

Despite suffering their first loss of the season and tripling the amount of goals they had given up so far, coach Hamilton was proud of his team’s attitude and the way they handled the loss.

“It takes 11 players to defend behind the ball, and I think that’s a mentality that we’ve embraced,” Hamilton said. “I’m pleased with the last two games where we learned how to win well, I’m very pleased with how they handled the outcome of the match. We look hungry. We’re ready to come back to work tomorrow. We understand some special issues we’ve been having, and we’ve got girls asking questions and a desire to want to get better, and a hunger to get better. If this is what it takes for kids to grab the reins, then we’ll take a lump like this.”

The Barbs are now 2-1 on the season, and will travel to Rochelle on Thursday to take on the Hubs.

Kane, Uremovich return as new coordinators

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – In the first spring football practice of the year last week, cornerback Cassius Grady intercepted a pass and returned it down the left sideline for a touchdown while the rest of the defense ran with him.

Running right alongside the players was Northern Illinois’ new defensive coordinator, Kevin Kane, with a wide smile.

After spending a year with his alma mater Kansas, Kane returned to the Huskies with the new position and is just one of several new coaches for Northern Illinois this spring season.

“It’s different, there’s new faces and everything, but at the same time, I know a lot of them so it’s been refreshing being back in someplace I know,” said Kane, 32. “It’s a big reason why I came back – I knew a lot of the kids and I knew the system.”

Joining Kane as a former Northern Illinois coach that returned as a coordinator is Mike Uremovich, who takes over the offense after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant at North Carolina State, under former Northern Illinois head coach Dave Doern. While Uremovich said some things are the same, one positive of being back is the Chessick Center – the Huskies’ indoor practice facility – wasn’t quite done when he left for North Carolina State.

“Obviously that’s a beautiful facility and helps us prepare,” said Uremovich, 39. “It’s great being back, obviously there’s a lot of familiar faces. It’s been an easy transition.”

The younger Kane and Uremovich will be replacing former defensive coordinator Jay Niemann and offensive coordinator Bob Cole. Niemann departed Northern Illinois to take the defensive coordinator position at Rutgers, and Cole’s contract was not renewed.

Both Kane and Uremovich said that, while there may be some new wrinkles, the overall scheme won’t look much different from year’s past. For Northern Illinois head coach Rod Carey, having coordinators who are already familiar with the system has helped with the transition.

“Usually when you think of two new coordinators, you think of a real hard transition,” Carey said. “It’s maybe uncomfortable at times for coaches and players. We got none of that this year, probably with the familiarity. Who’s running the system has changed and that will cause change in there. Yeah, there’s more learning than there has been, but certainly not from an overall system standpoint.”

“You got to have good players,” he said. “Nothing against Kansas, but we didn’t have enough. We have to have a lot of good players and you can draw up the best X’s and O’s in the world, but if your guys don’t know how to operate them – you have to adapt to what your players can do.”

Carey wasn’t the only one to be happy that Kane returned to DeKalb. During his stint as linebackers coach for the Huskies from 2012-14, many of the play-

ers he recruited are still on the roster and they praised having him back – including senior linebacker Jamaal Payton and senior outside linebacker Sean Folliard.

“I was ecstatic,” Folliard said. “I loved Coach Niemann and (former linebacker) Coach (Ross) Watson, who are gone, but Coach Kane brought me here and he was the one who molded me as a young linebacker. I couldn’t be happier.”

The coordinators weren’t the only coaches that created a massive shake-up for the Huskies. Watson left for Toledo after one year, cornerbacks coach Kel-

vin Sigler left to take the same position at South Alabama, and wide receivers coach Thad Ward recently took a position under new Illinois coach Lovie Smith.

While Ward was a strong recruiter for the Huskies in Florida, Carey said that Kelton Copeland, who moves from coaching the running backs to wide receivers and is a Miami native, will keep Northern Illinois’ foot in the door in the Sunshine State.

“Not just recruiting, Coach Ward is a very good football coach,” Carey said.

“We certainly were sad to see him go but happy for him at the same time. “(The) timing was awful,” Carey said, laughing, since Ward took the position on March 17 – five days before spring football. “But there’s nothing we can do about that. “I don’t want to say this and diminish Coach Ward, but I don’t think we’ll skip a beat down there in our recruiting efforts. We got good relationships, good brand down there.”

According to ProFootballScoop, the Huskies are also in line to hire former University of Wisconsin and Tennessee Titans coach Bob Bostad, although Carey was mum on who the final hire will be last week.

“I could tell you my plan, and then my plan could change and so I’d have to tell you again and again and again,” Carey said. “There’s no reason to say anything until everything is set and ink is on paper.”

DeKALB – To call the Northern Illinois softball team red-hot is an understatement.

The Huskies are riding their longest winning streak in nearly 30 years heading into a non-conference doubleheader at Loyola (Chicago) on Wednesday afternoon.

“We’re just playing well in all three phases,” Northern Illinois coach Christina Sutcliffe said.

“We’re pitching well and our offense is putting up numbers and our defense is doing enough to help us win and that’s what you need.”

The Huskies (22-7 overall, 3-0 in MAC West) have won 14 consecutive games for the first time since 1989 – including opening up the conference play with a three-game sweep at Bowling Green. It’s been a strong showing from the offense, outscoring teams 196-106 on the season, and a young pitching staff, which has a 3.20 ERA – compared with the Huskies’ opponents, which is 6.54.

“I think we’re having more fun,” said junior first baseman Kayti Grable, who was named the MAC West co-Player of the Week. “I think we have a chip on our shoulder because people are trying to beat us.”

Senior catcher Emily Naegele, who has been named the MAC West Player of the Week three times this season, is hitting .444 with 11 home runs, 35 RBIs and a 1.012. Coming into the season, Grable held the school record for home runs in a season with 15 and she said she hopes her teammate breaks it this season.

As for Grable, she’s hitting .422 with four home runs and 32 RBIs and junior Kali Kossakowski is hitting .393 with 36 runs. The Huskies, which have not lost since falling 6-5 to Delaware State on March 11, have six regulars hitting .309 or better and have hit 35 home runs.

“I think everybody in our lineup has a home run, even Jordan (Bowen) and she’s a slapper,” Naegele said. “It’s sort of a slugfest out there.”

While the offense is scoring 6.8 runs per game, a four-pronged pitching attack that consists of three sophomores and a freshman have pitched like veterans so far.

Sophomore Keegan Hayes leads the team in wins with a 10-5 record, 2.79 ERA in 10 games and five starts but is joined by sophomores Emma Ray (9-4, 1.52 ERA, nine games, four starts) and Tara Thacker (5-4, 4.54 ERA, two saves, 16 games, four starts) and freshman Alex Frenz (9-2, 3.13

While it’s unusual to have four starting pitchers, Sutcliffe said the bigger rotation has been highly beneficial.

“I think they’re seeing the success they’re all having and I think it’s taking a little pressure off them, to be honest,” Sutcliffe said. “If they don’t have their best stuff that day, they know somebody will have their back. It’s great for matchups against the hitters because they’re all completely different.”

After the doubleheader against Loyola on Wednesday – if it’s played, because rain is in the forecast – the Huskies face an important three-game series against Kent State in their home opener with a game at 3 p.m.

Sutcliffe called the Golden Flashes the early favorite to win the conference and they currently are 20-7 overall and 3-0 in the MAC East. Despite it being only the second conference series, the players called it a big one.

“This is a huge weekend for us,” Naegele said. “Katyi and I were talking about how when the Loyola games are over, we’re going to need to focus in because this is a huge weekend.”

The Sycamore baseball team moved to 5-0 on the year with a doubleheader sweep of Harlem on Tuesday, winning 13-1 in the opener and 7-6 in the late game.

In Game 2, Aidan Hickey scored the go-ahead run in the seventh after walking, then eventually scoring on a fielders choice by Zach Carlsen.

The Spartans led 4-0 in that one, but Harlem tied the game with four in the bottom of the fourth and took the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

In the top of the sixth, Sycamore took the lead with a pair of runs – Carlsen scored on a double by James Marcinkowski, who scored on a single by Michael Beaudoin.

Beaudoin allowed two runs, none

earned, in 3 2/3 innings of relief for the win. Jarod Montavon and Tyler Maveus each had two hits.

In the early game, Jack Mizgalski pitched five innings of one-hit ball for the win, allowing one earned run. The game lasted six innings.

Maveus had three hits in the game and Marcinkowski drove in three runs.

Jacob Cavanaugh hit a three-run home run in the Spartans’ six-run sixth.

Beaudoin added a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.

COOKING UP A BIT OF CUBA

Spanish classics influence island culture’s staple flavors and recipes

Cuba is on many people’s minds these days.

Airlines submit bids on contracts from American cities to Havana. People planning vacations wonder if they should venture into this land so long off limits. Auto aficionados want to ride in a pre-1958 car looking nearly as pristine as the day it rolled out of the factory. Baseball fans, hoping to get a look at future all-stars, plan to flock to more than one of the fields tucked into so many neighborhoods. Literature lovers will search for Ernest Hemingway’s famous fishing spots and other haunts to order up his favorite mojitos and daiquiris on his favorite barstool.

And chefs are seeking out undiscovered recipes to bring back to their menus as found, or as inspiration for new flavor combinations.

Some expect a lot of heat here, but they’ll be disappointed. Unlike other Caribbean islands, Cuban recipes don’t rely quite as much on spiciness for flavor. Much of the food, in restaurants and in home kitchens, is based on Spanish classics, often following the original very closely. No wiggle room.

Other recipes, known as “creole,” took detours like the languages that develop within closed communities.

A fried chicken is a lot like America’s own Southern fried, adding some Mediterranean fresh garlic and Caribbean lime juice. I learned that planning this one ahead is a good strategy. Pat the chicken pieces dry and leave them overnight on a sheet pan, uncovered, in the refrigerator, for a much better finish.

Root vegetables like sweet potatoes or yams became an especially filling staple in Cuba during the time called the “special period” when the island suffered all types of shortages.

They could be grown on a tiny plot of land and supplement whatever was available. Glazed and flavored with a combination of cinnamon and lime juice is unexpected.

The avocado and pineapple salad is another surprisingly mellow blending of flavors, and once again no spicy stuff.

The salad makes a delicious tweak to the side of the plate accustomed to a heap of potato salad and slaw beside the fried chicken.

CREOLE FRIED CHICKEN Makes 4 to 6 servings

A 3-½ pound chicken, cut into serving pieces 5 garlic cloves 1 teaspoon salt ½ cup fresh lime juice oil for deep frying 1-½ cups flour Crush the garlic and salt together in a bowl.

Whisk in the lime juice. Slather this mixture over the chicken pieces and refrigerate, for 3 to 5 hours.

Heat the oil in a large skillet on medium heat. Drain the chicken pieces and coat thoroughly in flour. Pat the flour onto the chicken, making sure it sticks to the surface.

Fry for 12 to 15 minutes, until golden. Drain on paper towels.

Strain the oil into a bowl, then return the cleared oil to the skillet, adding more if needed. Return chicken pieces to the skillet and cook for 10 to 15 minutes longer on medium heat.

The exterior will be deeply golden and very crisp; the interior will be fully cooked.

AVOCADO AND PINEAPPLE SALAD Makes 4 to 6 servings

2 or 3 avocadoes 2 cups fresh pineapple chunks 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons cider vinegar 1 tablespoon chopped scallions Cut the avocadoes in half. Remove pits by inserting the blade of a knife and twisting.

Keep the avocados intact, then make crisscross cuts through the inner flesh without cutting through the skin. Loose the avocado flesh. Fill the hollows in the avocado halves with the pineapple chunks.

Make a dressing by whisking together the oil and vinegar. Season with salt and pepper.

Spoon this dressing over the avocado and pineapples.

Sprinkle chopped scallions over the top.

Serve an avocado half to each person.

GLAZED SWEET POTATOES Makes 6 servings

1-½ pounds sweet potatoes 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

½ cup brown sugar ½ teaspoon cinnamon 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons dry white wine Peel the raw sweet potatoes under cool running water and place immediately into a pot of cool water, to cover, to keep them from discoloring.

Turn the heat up and bring the pot to a boil, adding the salt and lime juice. Simmer briskly for 35 to 40 minutes, until just tender, but not mushy, when pierced with a fork. Drain and rinse in cool water so that they stop cooking, and cool enough to be handled. Cut into ½-inch slices.

Arrange the slices in an ovenproof baking dish. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Dot each slice with butter; sprinkle the wine over the top.

Bake for 15 to 20 minutes in a preheated 350F oven. Serve right away with the fried chicken while still hot.

The patties can be formed a day ahead and chilled, which will improve their flavor even further. One last caveat: Be careful not to overcook the patties. All they’ll need is three minutes a side, plus a few more with the lentils. If you cook them to well done, they’ll be dry.

I love the combination of pork and beans, which is why I paired these rustic sausage patties with warm lentils.

The lentils and their cooking liquid are poured into the same skillet in which the sausages were grilled. This step deglazes the browned sausage juices on the bottom of the skillet and marries the pork to the lentils.

If you want to make this dish more substantial, you might stir some baby spinach or kale into the lentils and let them wilt before adding the sausages.

Rustic Sausage Patties with Lentils Start to finish: 1 hour 30 minutes (45 minutes active) Servings: 4

For the sausage patties: 12 ounces trimmed pork shoulder meat, cut into 1/2-inch chunks 4 ounces fresh pork fat (from the trimmed shoulder meat), cut into 1-inch pieces 2 slices bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces 2 tablespoons olive oil 2/3 cup finely minced yellow onion 2 teaspoons minced garlic 1 teaspoon dried sage 1 teaspoon dried thyme 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper For the lentil salad:

To make the sausages, in a shallow container such as a baking dish or small sheet pan, spread out the pork, fat and bacon. Freeze, uncovered, for 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a large skillet over medium, heat the olive oil. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic, sage and thyme, then cook, stirring, for 1 minute.

Transfer the mixture to a shallow bowl and refrigerate until cooled to room temperature.

Reserve the skillet.

Once the pork has chilled in the freezer for 30 minutes, transfer the fat and bacon to a food processor. Pulse until it is very finely chopped, then transfer to a bowl. Add the pork chunks to the processor and pulse until finely chopped.

Return the fat-bacon mixture to the processor and pulse several times to mix. Transfer the mixture back to the bowl along with the cooled onion mixture, the salt and pepper.

Knead the mixture for several minutes, or until it is mixed well and holds together when you squeeze it with your fingers.

In a small skillet, test a small piece of the sausage mixture, cooking it until nicely browned on both sides. Adjust seasoning as needed.

Shape the mixture into twelve 2-inch patties, then chill, covered, until ready to cook.

While the patties chill, prepare the lentil salad. In a 1-quart saucepan over medium-high, combine the lentils and 2 cups of the chicken broth. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook the lentils, partially covered, for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the lentils are just tender.

When the lentils are nearly done cooking, heat the reserved large skillet over medium.

Working in batches, add the sausage patties to the skillet and cook until they are nicely browned, about 3 minutes per side. Transfer the patties to a plate.

Pour off and discard all but 2 tablespoons of the fat from the skillet, then add to the skillet the cooked lentils along with their cooking liquid, the sherry vinegar and Dijon mustard.

Simmer gently, scraping up the browned bits from the bottom of the skillet, for 2 minutes, adding more chicken broth if desired to achieve a soupy consistency. Add the patties to the skillet and simmer gently for 2 minutes.

To serve, transfer a mound of the lentil mixture to each of 4 serving bowls, then top with 3 patties and garnish with chopped fresh parsley.

Nutrition information per serving: 590 calories; 310 calories from fat (53 percent of total calories); 34 g fat (10 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 80 mg cholesterol; 500 mg sodium; 33 g carbohydrate; 12 g fiber; 4 g sugar; 38 g protein.

If you’ve always nursed a yen to make your own sausage, but you don’t own a meat grinder and you’re dubious about the joys of stuffing ground meat into casings, this recipe for rustic sausage patties is for you.

So what about this ground meat mixture qualifies it as sausage? The answer is threefold: the seasonings, the way the ground meat is mixed and the high fat content of the mixture.

Most hamburger meat contains 15 to 20 percent fat. Ground chuck clocks in at about 30 percent. But when it comes to sausage, most of which is made from pork, the fat averages 30 to 50 percent.

And – big surprise! – that’s why we love it so much. The flavor and juiciness are enhanced greatly by all that fat.

Still, there’s no reason to get crazy, which is why I’ve walked a middle line here, aiming for a fat content around 35 percent. Pork shoulder (also known as pork butt or Boston butt) is my cut of choice. It’s inexpensive, tasty and rich with fat. But the ratio of meat to fat varies even within a given piece of pork shoulder. Some parts are leaner, some fattier. To arrive at just the right ratio, you need to slice off the fat and weigh it, then weigh the meat, too.

Next, it’s time to toss in a couple of slices of bacon, which is my way of adding smokiness to the sausages without actually having to smoke them.

Given that most folks don’t own a meat grinder, we’re going to use a food processor to “grind” the meat. First, however, the meat and fat must be frozen. This helps them break up more evenly during processing and helps prevent them from overheating in the machine. You can take advantage of that freezing time to cook and chill the onion mixture.

When all of the ingredients are combined – the ground meat, fat, onion and seasonings – it’s important to mix them well. Kneading makes the finished sausages denser and springier. These qualities are what make a sausage a sausage rather than a burger, which should be loose and crumbly.

I call for the cooking and tasting of a “test pilot,” or tiny sample patty, before launching into full production.

It’s a safe way to decide whether the sausage is seasoned to your taste, given you shouldn’t just pinch off and gobble down a piece of raw meat.

First, it’s just not safe. Second, raw meat requires different seasoning than cooked meat.

Easy comfort dinner with 1 pan, lots of paprika

Chicken paprikash is the kind of dish that reveals itself immediately and inarguably as comfort food, even if you’ve never eaten it before in your life.

It’s a classic Hungarian dish that features chicken, onions, broth, tomatoes (sometimes, not always) and of course copious amounts of paprika. I have been playing around with my tin of smoked paprika for quite a while now, and while I love the flavor, it can come on strong. So here I relied primarily on the typical sweet Hungarian paprika, then added a little bit of smoked to give it another level of flavor. You also could add a bit of hot paprika to give the dish a different kind of kick.

If you are the kind of person to make your own dumplings or noodles, this is a great moment to whip out that skill set. For the rest of us, and for a weeknight dinner, a bag of egg noodles fits the bill perfectly. You don’t want to heat the sour cream in the sauce over the stove, or it might curdle. Just stir it into the pot at the very end and it will add a tangy-creamy note to the warm sauce.

Chicken Paprikash

Start to finish: 45 minutes Servings: 8 3 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs Kosher salt and ground black pepper 1 tablespoon canola oil 2 large yellow onions, quartered length-

wise and thinly sliced crosswise 2 cloves garlic, finely minced 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons sweet paprika 1 teaspoon smoked or hot paprika (optional) 2 bay leaves 14-ounce can crushed tomatoes 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth 16-ounce bag egg noodles 3/4 cup sour cream Season the chicken with salt and pepper.

In a very large, deep heavy sauté pan (such as cast-iron) over medium-high, heat the oil. When the oil is hot, add the chicken and cook for about 4 minutes. Flip the chicken and cook for another 4 minutes; it will not be cooked through. Transfer the chicken to a plate. It’s fine if there are bits stuck to the pan.

Return the pan to medium heat and add the onions. Sauté for 5 minutes, or until softened and moderately browned. Stir in the garlic and sauté for another minute. Stir in the flour and both varieties of paprika, stirring for 1 minute, or until well mixed. Add the bay leaves, tomatoes and broth. Bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally and scraping the bottom to loosen any stuck bits.

Return the chicken to the pan, along with any juices on the plate. Cook for another 10 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through.

Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the egg noodles according to package directions. Drain and divide between serving plates. When the chicken is cooked, remove the pan from the heat.

Remove the bay leaves from the sauce and discard, then stir in the sour cream. Top each portion of noodles with chicken and sauce.

The unexpected gift is the result of Carla Raynor, coordinator of Family Literacy and Learning for Life instructor, meeting a member of the Francis Meyer Charitable Lead Trust’s board while visiting her mother in Indiana.

“We had many wonderful, wide-ranging conversations that included what I do at the college, who I work with and how the programs benefit the students,” Raynor said in a news release. “When I was told that perhaps they could help me, I thought that a few hundred dollars would be a great opportunity for me to purchase a few more books and other necessary items for both programs. I never expected the amount I received and am so incredibly grateful!”

Sycamore choir students compete DAILY CHRONICLE Two Sycamore High School Choir students, Lauren Brazeau and Mary Flaherty, participated in the recent American Choir Directors Association (ACDA) Regional Conference.

Brazeau and Flaherty each submitted an audition recording and were competing against submissions from Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.

Both students were selected to be part of the High School Honors Choir, a 100-member choir under the direction of Joe Miller from New Jersey’s Westminster Choir College, a division of Rider University’s Westminster College of the Arts.

“This is a very prestigious honor for Lauren and Mary,” SHS choral director Drayton Eggleson said in a news release. “Contestants can only audition for this choir every other year, therefore it is very competitive. We are so fortunate to have two of Sycamore’s choral members be selected and participate in this event.”

This year the ACDA Central Division held its four-day conference at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago.

Sleep labs can reveal sleep apnea Dear Dr. K: My doctor thinks I may have sleep apnea, and he wants me to go to a sleep lab to be tested. What will happen during the testing?

Dear Reader: Sleep apnea is a serious health condition in which breathing stops or becomes shallower. In the most common form, obstructive sleep apnea, the tongue or throat tissues temporarily and repeatedly block the flow of air in and out of your lungs. This can happen hundreds of times each night. Laboratory sleep tests are the most reliable way to diagnose this problem.

When you spend the night in a sleep laboratory, you’ll wear your own nightclothes, and you can use a pillow from home. You can take your regular medications, but the clinicians will need to know what they are.

The lab usually provides a regular bed in a private room with a bathroom attached.

The room is kept as quiet as possible.

A technician first will set up the sleep-monitoring equipment. Then you’ll be left alone to relax until bedtime.

Throughout the night, laboratory staff will monitor you from a nearby control room.

Procedures used to diagnose sleep apnea usually include a test called polysomnography, as well as audio and video recording.

Polysomnography: In this procedure, small electrodes and other sensors are pasted on specific parts of your body to take a variety of readings during the night.

Some things they may track include your brain waves, muscle tension, eye movements, airflow, heart rate and rhythm, breathing, and the amount of oxygen in your blood.

The readings are collected on a printout called a polysomnogram. This is analyzed by a technician and physician. If a breathing problem is detected early on during testing, you may be awakened and given treatment during the second half of the

Audio and video recording: Audio equipment may be used to record snoring, talking during sleep or other sounds. A video also may be taken to compare with the polysomnogram. This may show, for example, you snore (a sign of sleep apnea) only when in a certain position, as when you’re lying on your back instead of on your side or stomach.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has a listing of more than 2,500 accredited sleep disorder centers and more than 5,600 board-certified sleep specialists.

Staying overnight in a sleep laboratory usually costs between $800 and $1,500. In advance of the test, ask your health insurance company if it will pay for the test.

Reimbursement varies, and may depend on your diagnosis.

If not properly diagnosed and treated, sleep apnea can cause problems with a person’s mood and ability to think clearly.

These, in turn, can cause serious problems both at work and at home. In addition, by interrupting deep sleep, sleep apnea may increase the risk of obesity, diabetes and other diseases.

Sleep laboratory testing is a painless procedure, and I wouldn’t hesitate to have the testing done.

DEAR ABBY My oldest son came to me nine Jeanne months ago askPhillips ing my opinion.

He wanted to donate sperm to a black lesbian couple (for a fee) so they could have a biracial child. He told me he needed the money. I told him I didn’t approve because they are lesbians. (Sorry, I’ll be bashed for that statement, but I have to be honest.)

I have a biracial 10-year-old son, so race isn’t the issue. Had it been a heterosexual couple of any race, I would have been OK. However, what I told him was that if he gives up his rights to the child, I, too, won’t have grandparents’ rights. I broke down in tears when he told me all this.

Yesterday I received a picture of a newborn.

It turns out my son donated his sperm knowing how I feel about homosexuality. I have tried hard to always be there for my children, letting them know I love them and doing the best a single mother could do for them. I feel I must have failed horribly in bringing him up to be a better man.

I cannot, in our home state, fight for grandparents’ rights since he has relinquished his rights. I am even more hurt he would share a picture of my grandson knowing my opinion, and I feel horribly disrespected. Am I being overly sensitive? Should I just let all of this go?

For example, a six-spade contract that seems to rely totally on the trump finesse is not exactly 50 percent, because an opponent might be able to get a trick-one ruff. But the chance of that will be very low.

In today’s deal, what is the chance that six spades will make? How should declarer plan the play after West leads the club queen?

In the auction, after North raises spades, South shouldn’t use Blackwood, because when North shows one ace, South will not know if it is the valuable diamond ace or the less useful heart ace. Instead, South should continue with four clubs, a control-bid showing a first-round control (ace or void) in that suit.

Here, North control-bids four hearts, denying the diamond ace and showing the heart ace. South ends the auction with a plunge into six spades.

South has three possible losers: two diamonds and one club. The club six will disappear on dummy’s heart ace, but to hold the diamond losers to one, declarer must find East with the diamond ace -- a 50-50 chance.

After winning with his club ace, South plays a trump to dummy, pitches his low club on the heart ace, then leads a diamond to his king. When it wins, declarer returns to dummy with a trump, and plays another diamond through East to get home.
