Between the first and second sleep POLL In the many centuries before indoor and outdoor lighting were commonplace, people used to sleep in two segments, with a waking period of an hour or two in between.

Studies have been conducted where people who have today’s lighting conveniences taken from them fall back into this pattern.

I’m reminded of this sometimes when I wake up in the middle of the night. You know, maybe it’s healthy. Maybe the people who lay there nonstop for eight hours are the odd ones.

Unfortunately, unlike my ancestors, there’s nothing to do when I wake up midnight.

Nothing but think.

• Where are those people going in their cars at 4 a.m.? I hope one of them is going to make doughnuts.

• How long will it be before we get our first “the whole town smells like manure” day? I bet soon. Spring’s not far.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Ah, there’s nothing like a blast of fresh, frigid air to welcome you back to the planet after nearly a year cooped up in space.

That’s the word from astronaut Scott Kelly, NASA’s space-endurance champ who returned Wednesday to bitterly cold Kazakhstan, along with his roommate for the past year, Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko.

In a NASA interview before heading home to Houston, Kelly said it was “amazing” to feel the cold air when the hatch of his Soyuz capsule popped open after touchdown.

“I don’t mean to say it’s not fresh on the space station,” he said, “but there’s nothing like new cold air coming into the capsule.”

NIU College Republicans host state’s attorney candidate discussion

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The three Republican candidates for DeKalb County state’s attorney Wednesday debated plans to reduce and prosecute violent crimes in the community.

The debate, hosted by Northern Illinois University’s College Republicans was open to the public and allotted time for responses from Richard Amato, Charles Rea and Clay Campbell – each of the men in the running for Republican nomination to challenge incumbent DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack.

Serving as a point of contention was whether the state’s attorney’s office focuses too much effort prosecuting nonviolent crimes.

While suggesting the county State’s Attorney’s Office re-prioritize its caseload, former State’s Attorney Clay Campbell referred to 19-year-old Christian Contreras, a DeKalb man charged in connection with Thursday’s shooting, and a known violent offender.

“I think what we actually are doing as a country is starting to rethink our approach to criminal justice,” Campbell said. “We’ve got to start moving some of these cases away that we might normally charge,” he said.

Candidate Charles Rea, however, said it isn’t the state’s attorney’s job to choose which cases they prosecute.

Provided the office’s budget and staff, traffic and first-offense drug charges deserve as much attention as violent crimes, he said.

“You’re sending the wrong message if you’re telling the public, ‘We’re just going to ignore this group of crimes,’ “ Rea said.

But Amato and Campbell agreed that traffic crimes, juvenile cases and marijuana charges are often drawn out and prevent prosecutors from working on cases that pose a threat to the community.

SYCAMORE – Sycamore-based airlines are threatening to pull out of DeKalb County if a countywide school facility sales tax goes on the ballot, county officials said Wednesday.

School officials in the county are considering banding together to place a referendum on the ballot asking voters to implement a new sales tax – up to 1 percent – to go to school facilities or construction bonds. Districts that educate more than 51 percent of students in the county would have to be on board with the plan to submit a question that would be on the ballot, most likely in 2017.

If the tax is implemented, it could bring in about $15 million in revenue, to be split among the county’s school districts based on how many DeKalb County students attend school in each district, officials said.

The County Board’s Finance Committee met Wednesday to discuss the impact of the proposed tax on its budget. Tracy Jones, a Republican member of the finance committee and vice-chairman of the County Board, said he didn’t think the proposal would

go anywhere – but if it did, everyone in the county would lose.

Both American Airlines and United Airlines have subsidiary offices in Sycamore where they make their fuel purchases. By buying their jet fuel in DeKalb County rather than Cook County, they pay a lower sales tax rate and also receive tens of millions in sales tax rebates under an agreement with the city of Sycamore, which re-

ceives hundreds of thousands in revenue each year.

However, the county has no such agreement with the airlines, enabling it to collect millions.

“Their fuel would be taxed 1 percent, so that’s a lot of money,” Jones said. “We’re collecting $2 million to $3 million a year, at a quarter of a percent. … Forty percent of [the prospective sales tax revenue] is from airline fuel. So it’s pretty huge to the whole deal.”

The Regional Transit Authority has filed suit over the arrangement, alleging that the airlines fuel-buying operations are “sham offices” and constitute a tax dodge. The RTA’s lawsuit left county officials to grapple with the idea of losing the revenue last fall. A school sales tax increase would have the same effect, because it would make it more expensive for the airlines to do business in DeKalb County.

County Board members can not stop a referendum question from going on the ballot – that’s in the hands of county school districts. The county school facility tax can go up to 1 percent, implemented in quarter-percent increments on all products sold, with the exception of items including cars,

boats, aircraft, some foods, drugs and medical supplies and farm equipment, which is what makes the jet fuel piece critical, Jones said.

But finance committee members voiced apprehension at Wednesday’s meeting.

Finance Committee member Jim Luebke said it was time to put the pressure on to dissuade the schools from implementing the tax.

“If DeKalb School District can say, ‘We don’t see it passing. We’re not going to put it on the ballot.’ then it’s done. So if anything can be done in the future, at future meetings. … They dump it.”

But Finance Committee Chairman Paul Stoddard said it might not wise to get too involved.

“If we take a formal position, it might just antagonize them even more,” Stoddard said. “I think giving them the information and letting them know the downside – the probable downside – seems to be.”

Superintendents and education board members throughout the county have at least one more meeting planned on the issue.

If placed on the ballot and approved, it could be enacted as soon as July 2017.

D-428 officials consider tech rollout changes

DeKALB – Financial concerns might mean that not all DeKalb School District 428 students will get Chromebooks as part of the school district’s multimillion-dollar 1-to-1 technology initiative.

District officials are debating the merits of implementing the full tech-rollout plan versus delaying or cutting grades from the plan and will vote on what to do at the March 15 board meeting.

The district’s third- through ninth-graders have Chromebooks. The original plan was a three-year rollout approved by the former district board.

Under that plan, third through 12th grades would have the laptops by fiscal 2017 and by fiscal 2018, kindergartners, first- and second-graders would have access to devices, sharing one Chromebook per two students.

Most board members favor modifying the plan and not giving the K through second-grade students computers unless additional money becomes available.

“The modified plan is the most sensible at this point in time,” board member Kerry Mellott said. “High school kids don’t have another chance. They need those things now. We can hold back on K through two because they still have years ahead of them.”

If the plan goes on as originally planned, the district will have a projected deficit of about $2 million in fiscal 2017 and a $3.8 million deficit in fiscal 2018. The deficit is expected to dip back to about $2.7 million in fiscal 2019 because that is when one of DeKalb’s tax increment financing districts expires, which means DeKalb schools will get tax revenue that previously went into the TIF fund.

Several board members said they don’t want to spend a single penny more than they have to.

“Financially, it is going to dig us a hole,” board member Fred Davis said.

“Instead of bouncing all the grades around, they should have been placed in the high school to begin with. I’d like to see it put on hold until we are more financially stable.”

If the district modifies the plan by cutting kindergarten, first and second grades from the rollout, the deficit would be slightly less. In fiscal 2017, the district would have a projected deficit of about $1.9 million and a projected $3.3 million deficit in fiscal 2018. When the TIF expires, the deficit would go down to $2.2 million.

The five-year estimated cost of adding grades K through second is about $1.8 million. The cost comes from not only the laptops themselves but also buying management software and paying for technology staff and teacher training. The district assumed that the state wouldn’t make any changes to its funding formula and used the current budget for the basis of the projection.

Parents, teachers and students are in favor of keeping the tech rollout on track. Brad Vest, a teacher at DeKalb High School and parent of Lincoln Elementary students, said that technology was essential to preparing students for future careers.

“We have the opportunity here to give kids equity and privilege,” he said. “Their jobs, their careers are going to rely on these skills. ... The money scares the heck out of me, but the longer we sit on the money, the longer we sit and watch our kids fall behind.”

DeKALB – Alex Nerad is seeking local governments’ support for a newly created arts, culture and entertainment corridor, and DeKalb County Board’s Economic Development Committee on Tuesday became the first to give it a thumbs-up.

The ACE Corridor is a project of the DeKalb Area Arts Council, which Nerad heads, and also part of the #ProudlyDeKalb Committee’s revitalization plan for the city.

“We started to see in DeKalb that there was a pretty large concentration of venues, sites and organizations within a natural corridor along Lincoln Highway,” said Nerad, who is also executive director of the Egyptian Theatre. “All of us within the arts community were not aware of the concentration there. And certainly outside of the broader DeKalb community, people are not aware of what the community has to offer.”

The proposed corridor runs from the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center east through downtown DeKalb and surrounding blocks. There are 30 different galleries, venues, museums and other sites already existing within those boundaries, and 45 different related businesses, he added.

Nerad told members of the Economic Development Committee that the idea for the ACE Corridor was not a unique one, as many exist around the country. He further explained that the entity was purposely called a “corridor” versus a “district” so that its intentions would not be misconstrued.

“We’re not looking to change any taxing, we’re not looking to change any zoning, we’re not looking to change any ordinances,” Nerad said.

“Really, all that this is is a nickname.

It’s a branding, marketing initiative to be able to package all of these assets that we currently have, and hope to attract more as we build and grow.”

According to the ordinance that the seven committee members voted unanimously Tuesday to pass on to the full County Board for approval, the ACE Corridor seeks to be an economic stimulator.

For the most part, committee members were widely receptive of the idea of the corridor.

Nerad replied that he had heard community concerns that “have no basis in reality.”

He reiterated the corridor’s marketing objective.

“This resolution and our plans moving forward, are not granting anyone any authority to do anything anywhere,” Nerad said. “All this is is akin to a nickname, as we’re embracing a branding and marketing initiative.”

A black case containing three handguns valued at $1,500 and a large number of coins were stolen. Two other car burglaries were reported in Cortland that night, according to a news release from DeKalb County Crime Stoppers.

If elected, Rea said he plans to assign assistant state’s attorneys to work alongside the DeKalb and NIU police departments – the departments that respond to the county’s most serious crimes, he said.

“We’re going to have two assistant state’s attorneys assigned to the DeKalb Police Department,” he said.

“We’re going to have assistant state’s attorneys here doing that with them and having a working relationship with them.”

Amato has long endorsed teamwork between the cities’ police departments and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

“It doesn’t mean police are going to be put on a pedestal,” he said. “They’re

going to account for their actions, but they’re going to be part of a team of law enforcement and state’s attorneys.”

While Campbell said it is imperative prosecutors and law enforcement officers work with one another, the state’s attorney must be careful to remain loyal also to the people who elected him.

“The state’s attorney’s isn’t the office to be the attorneys for the police,” he said. “They’re the attorneys for the entire community.”

Historical society to hear presentation on scales

“Weighing in on Scales” will be presented by authors Bill and Jan Berning of Sycamore.

Bill Berning has been a scale collector since 1983 and a member of the International Society of Antique Scale Collectors since 1991. He initially specialized in antique coin-operated scales and has been self-employed in the scale industry full-time since 1995.

Jan Berning has been a scale collector since 1977 and a member of the International Society of Antique Scale Collectors since 1981. She has a general collection consisting of more than 1,400 antique scales. She is the editor of Equilibrium, the journal of the International Society of Antique Scale Collectors, having served in that capacity for more than 10 years.

The Bernings are the authors of “Scales: A Collector’s Guide,” (Schiffer Publishing 1999) and the revised and expanded second edition of “Scales: A Collector’s Guide” (Schiffer Publishing 2004). Their combined collections of antique scales consist of approximately 2,300 scales.

In the past, they were employed as experts in their field by Eppraisal. com. In addition, articles by or about the Bernings have appeared in issues of Reminisce, Southeastern Antiquing and Collecting Magazine, This Old House, Equilibrium, and Country Living. Recently, the Bernings have consulted for the TV shows “Auction Kings,” “Garage Gold” and “Sold.”

“When you divide to conquer, you don’t conquer anything,” Pritchard said.

A bill to override Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of a bill to fund college grants for low-income students fell two votes shy of passage Wednesday in Springfield, with local Republicans voting against it.

Senate Bill 2043 was a Democrat-backed bill that called for the state spending $397 million to fund the Monetary Award Program for low-income students and $324 million for community colleges. The House debated restoring hundreds of millions of dollars in college funding for two hours Wednesday afternoon. But overcoming Rauner’s rejection of the spending required 71 votes. It failed, 69-48.

Democrats introduced the separate legislation to fund MAP, pulling it from the appropriations bill Rauner, a Republican, vetoed in June – which has left the state without a budget since July 1.

State Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, said that his “no” vote was simple math.

“There’s $32 billion in revenue and $38 billion in spending. There’s no money to pay for this. It’s giving false hope to those who are expecting to get something out of this when there’s no money to pay for it,” said Bivins,

whose 45th District includes Kishwaukee Community College and other parts of DeKalb County.

Law enforcement urges end to Illinois budget standoff

SPRINGFIELD – Prosecutors and law enforcement officials criticized Illinois lawmakers and Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner on Wednesday for failing to pass a state budget, saying their nine-month standoff is hurting public safety.

State county attorneys, sheriffs and police chiefs focused their comments on youth crime-diversion programs that are serving fewer teens because they haven’t gotten state funding since July 1, when the current year budget should have taken effect. Law enforcement officials argued that lack of funding for those programs will hurt the state in the long term.

More than half of the state’s counties that participate in Redeploy Illinois, which provides counseling to teens at risk of incarceration, have left the program, affecting almost 300 youths who would have been served, according to a survey

Ill. EPA gets warning about emissions testing reminders

CHICAGO – Federal officials are warning the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency of environmental consequences after the state announced it will temporarily allow license plate renewals without emissions tests.

Last month, the IEPA announced it would stop mailing emissions test reminders because of Illinois’ budget gridlock. Motorists with license plates that expire by the end of March won’t receive notices. Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White said he’s allowing renewals temporarily to avoid an unfair burden to residents.

However, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sent a Feb. 19 letter to Illinois officials saying the changes could “adversely impact air quality.”

Federal officials want more details about the changes.

CHICAGO – A federal judge has sentenced a veteran Chicago police officer to two years in prison for using excessive force in the September 2012 beating of a convenience store clerk captured by surveillance cameras.

Aldo Brown was convicted in October of excessive force. He testified at his trial that he began throwing punches at Jecque Howard only after he realized Howard had a handgun in his back pocket.

U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall told Brown Wednesday, “We can’t have a police community where it’s us v. them.”

She also said his testimony was not believable, but Brown insisted he never lied.

Rattled GOP seeking a strategy to stop Trump The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – Staring down the prospect of nominating Donald Trump for president, Republicans spiraled into a chaotic, last-ditch search Wednesday for a way to save the GOP from hitching its fortunes to an unpredictable celebrity candidate without alienating his throng of followers.

Sensing a window closing fast, GOP leaders and elder statesmen toggled through a menu of scenarios but landed on none. Some amplified calls to rally around a Trump alternative, even if that alternative is Ted Cruz, a prickly conservative with few friends in the party.

Others laid out still-hazy plans for a brokered national convention, an option likely to smack of the backroom dealing Trump fans despise. Some floated more extreme measures, talking of breaking from the party and starting anew.

“It’s all a play to stall it or try to deny him the nomination,” said Neil Newhouse, a GOP pollster. “And the problem with that is no one has the best scenario for how to do that.”

The scrambling came as the billionaire candidate racked up commanding victories in seven of 11 Super Tuesday primary contests, and the path to victory for his rivals narrowed. Trump’s strength – which stretched from the Deep South to New England – exposed the depths of the divisions within the party, no matter who becomes the nominee in

this election.

As Republicans surveyed the wreckage from Trump’s surge, some argued there still was a chance to stop him. He was not yet on track to claim the nomination before the party’s national gathering in July, according to an Associated Press delegate count. He has won 46 percent of the delegates awarded so far, and he would have to increase that to 51 percent in the remaining primaries.

“Trump had a good night, but he left the door open,” said David Winston, a Republican pollster.

The GOP mayhem contrasted sharply with a clearer picture on the Democratic side, where Hillary Clinton on Tuesday locked down solid victories in seven states and was on the path to regaining her status as the inevitable nominee.

Rival Sen. Bernie Sanders vowed to keep up the fight, campaigning in Maine on Wednesday.

Sanders, a fierce opponent of big money in politics, quoted director and screenwriter Adam McKay, winner of this year’s Oscar for “The Big Short” adapted screenplay, who warned about candidates who take major contributions from “weirdo billionaires.”

Republicans, meanwhile, looked for a wise man to calm the jitters and point the way.

Mitt Romney, their nominee four years ago, suggested he might try to fill that role. The former Massachusetts governor announced plans to speak on the “state of the 2016 presidential race” Thursday in Utah.

Backlash over assembly symptom of greater problem The Black History Month assembly last week should have been better managed by administrators at DeKalb High School.

The adults needed to help the student performers with their message so that it would be appropriate for their audience – their fellow teenage students for whom attendance was mandatory.

Had the grown-ups done a better job of that, the student performers wouldn’t have been unnecessarily attached to something that caused a rift among their fellow students.

But let’s not pretend that the anger among students and the hundreds of absences from school after the assembly last week are just a high school issue.

Local race relations are a community issue, and its one that we need to work on as a community to improve because the DeKalb community is growing more racially diverse with each passing year.

It seems that many of the people who were most upset by the assemblies last week weren’t there.

Many of the students we spoke with said that they didn’t think there was anything offensive in the performances they saw. But on social media and in calls to our newsroom, many parents and other adults were outraged this assembly had taken place.

Last school year, 13 percent of students at DeKalb High were black, along with 17 percent of students districtwide, according to the Illinois School Report Card. Black students are not the largest minority group in the district or the high school – Hispanic students make up about one-fifth of the enrollment at DHS. The district as a whole is 51 percent white, a percentage that has been declining in recent years.

Diversity is a positive thing. It’s not something to fear, and children who grow up in a diverse environment will be accustomed to the America they are poised to inherit – one that is expected to be majority-minority within the next 30 years.

Already, there are efforts underway to build unity among diverse sections of the community.

Local faith communities have teamed up to host Beloved Community potluck dinners bring people from different walks of life together for an evening of conversation. The 12th such event was held just last month.

We hope that the students who performed last week did not come away discouraged. Expressing oneself on stage in front of your peers should bring joy.

The fact that this assembly became something other than what it was intended to be is not their fault.

Mexico, once frosty but now warm thanks to a generation-long effort on both sides of the border, would be sacrificed to a pharaonic anti-migrant wall project and, possibly, a trade war, about which Trump says, “I don’t mind.”

Trump would pick fights with Japan and South Korea over their purported insufficient payments for the U.S. troop presence in those countries, even though each country funds about half the nonpersonnel costs – and even though the costs of dealing with a U.S.-free Asia, in which Japan and South Korea might go nuclear for fear of China and North Korea, could be higher by far.

Meanwhile, Trump implies that he would forge cozy ties with strongmen and rely on them to keep order in their various domains and spheres of influence. His admiration for Putin –

flattering himself, Trump boasts that the admiration is mutual – is already well-known. The revelation in the last Republican debate before Super Tuesday, however, was Trump’s benign view of Iraq’s Saddam Hussein and Libya’s Moammar Gaddafi: “At least they killed terrorists, all right?” he observed.

This, regarding dictators with a long and proven record of backing murders of Americans, including 189 killed in the 1988 terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.

Trump leavened these geostrategic musings by noting it would be “a fantastic thing” to broker peace between Israelis and Palestinians, and merited a stance by him of “neutrality” toward the two parties. What he didn’t explain was how or why he would prove any more successful than past peacemakers, such as Secretary of State John

Kerry, who recently spent a lot of time and U.S. prestige proving that the moment is not ripe.

To be sure, all of the above could change with the candidate’s mood, or with his naming of a foreign policy team – something Trump promised in September but has yet to deliver.

For now, however, this is what we know: The likely Republican nominee has a wildly distorted assessment of the risks and rewards of U.S. engagement with the world. He envisions a country that seals itself off behind walls, physical and conceptual – and emerges only to bomb the odd terrorist camp or haul in a suspect for “much worse” than waterboarding.

Ultimately, this would prove far more costly to the American people than the institutions, alliances and commitments that Trump derides.

It’s a remarkable situation: a candidate barreling toward the nomination of a party whose leaders insist they don’t want him.

Ramesh Ponnuru: Let me outline a possible scenario where a Trump general election would not be a wild ride.

If I were the Democrats confronting Trump as the Republican nominee, I would run an early ad onslaught against Trump – and, as I suggested earlier, that ad campaign might well

drive his numbers, which are already pretty bad among voters in general, further down. If the race starts to look put away, can even a showman as talented as Trump keep holding the attention of the media and the public?

Francis Wilkinson: I do not doubt Trump’s ability to hold attention.

THAT he does very well. But, yes, the Democrats will run a blistering campaign and they will likely begin it before Trump is even free and clear of the primary. His negatives in a general election are huge. But as someone who underestimated him, I’m wary of saying this guy is a dead duck.

Ramesh Ponnuru: I wouldn’t say he’s a dead duck as the nominee (and I don’t think it’s yet absolutely certain that he will be the nominee). I’m one of the many who underestimated Trump, so I hear you. But what I really did was overestimate the Republican party. For all the controversy, Trump has had a pretty free ride. We have, as yet, no reason to think he will do well when that ends – as end it will.

After Super Tuesday, Donald Trump could well be on the ballot come November, which means, among other things, that Americans are going to be offered a radical view of the world, and America’s role in it.

The Trump foreign policy, at least as he’s described it in various outbursts on the campaign trail, is that the United States’ long-standing relationships and alliances are stacked against it, and that they must be downgraded, renegotiated or abandoned in favor of closer ties with, well, almost no one, except possibly Russian strongman Vladimir Putin. Quite apart from the ugly moral implications, the sudden, sullen U.S. retreat Trump advocates would be deeply destabilizing for an already unstable world.

The negative global impact would begin at the southern border. Relations between the United States and

MAPLE PARK – Jack Mizgalski and Tim Zahm hit press-breaking 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions for the Sycamore boys basketball team against Aurora Central Catholic on Wednesday, pushing the team’s lead to nine with less than 4 minutes left.

It turns out those points would be critical, as the Chargers’ press started working, forcing five turnovers down the stretch. But the Spartans held on for a 39-38 win in a Class 3A Kaneland Regional semifinal, setting up a showdown with the hosts for the title Friday.

“We talked about surviving and advancing, and that’s exactly what we did,” Sycamore coach Andrew Stacy said. “It wasn’t pretty down the stretch, but we found a way to keep the wheels on the bus at the end even though they were shaking and trying to fall off. We need to do a better job at staying poised, playing better basketball down the stretch and making better decisions.”

Mizgalski hit his fourth and final 3-pointer of the game with 5:09 left to give the Spartans (17-10) a 33-27 lead.

Then, after the Chargers (14-12) held the ball for a minute but travelled, Zahm hit his second 3-pointer of the game to push the lead to nine.

“Those were huge because they were starting to go on a run a little bit,” Mizgalski said. “They were gaining momentum, so when our seniors and our guys broke the press, along with Ty, they found us open in the corners and we ended the momentum they started to build up.”

The lead stood at 39-33 with 1:21 left after Mizgalski hit both ends of a one-and-one free-throw situation.

Eight seconds later, Donovan Reid hit a 3-pointer for the Chargers. After a Sycamore turnover, Brett Czerak hit a field goal to bring the score to it’s eventual final.

“Their backs were pressed up against the wall, they didn’t want their season to end, so they were giving everything they had and making some good, solid traps,” Stacy said.

Mizgalski scored 14 to lead the Spartans and Zahm added seven. Brett Bemis had six points and a game-high six rebounds.

Mizgalski said the team was determined not to have that happen again after losing their regional opener last year. This year, they’ll face Kaneland for a regional title at 7 p.m. Friday.

“We wanted this to be different,” Mizgalski said. “It’s absolutely great to win this game for our team, for our seniors.”

Toledo showdown could be financial windfall

Huskies to keep all ticket revenue up to $500K for game at U.S. Cellular Field

jseverson@shawmedia.com The experiment of playing at U.S. Cellular Field this coming season could end up being a nice payday for the Northern Illinois football team.

According to the agreement between Northern Illinois and the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority – the owner of U.S. Cellular Field – the school will retain all ticket revenue up to $500,000. If the revenue surpasses that mark, NIU and the ISFA will evenly split the revenue.

During the six home games at Huskie Stadium last season, NIU drew an average attendance of 13,942 with an average revenue of $228,773.67 a game.

NIU athletic director Sean Frazier has not been shy about talking about the possibility of drawing 30,000 fans to U.S. Cellular Field for the Nov. 9 contest against rival Toledo, which has been dubbed the Chi-Town Showdown. It will be the first football game played at the current home of the Chicago White Sox. Frazier had mentioned that the individual tickets for the game against Toledo will most likely be higher than a normal game at Huskie Stadium – but that season-ticket prices would be unchanged.

In the end, the Huskies had to settle for another tough loss, falling 76-68 on Wednesday night in Muncie, Indiana.

The Huskies (11-17 overall, 4-13 Mid-American Conference West Division) were leading, 42-34, at halftime after going 6 for 11 from the 3-point line.

team-high 23 points in the first half – going 7 for 7 from the floor and making all three of her 3-pointers in the first two quarters.

“We’ve seen at times that when Cassidy is aggressive, she has a lot of success,” NIU coach Lisa Carlsen said of Glenn, who finished 10 for 15 from the field.

Freshman shooter Courtney Woods scored 21 points for the Huskies and junior guard Ally Lehman flirted again with a triple-double, finishing with 15 points, six rebounds and seven assists before fouling out.

Ball State’s Nathalie Fontaine had a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds and had a layup before the buzzer that gave her 2,092 career points – the most in Cardinals’ history.

The Huskies, which shot 1 for 8 from the 3-point line in the second half, led the Cardinals (20-8 overall, 12-5 MAC West), 63-62, with 2:35 left in the game, before Ball State took control the rest of the way.

“We’re getting smarter, we have a better understanding of what we’re trying to get – both individually and collectively,” Carlsen said of the Huskies, who also had a tough, 89-83 overtime loss to Toledo (17-11 overall, 12-5 in MAC West) on Saturday.

The Huskies wrap up their regular-season schedule by hosting Western Michigan at 1 p.m. Saturday before playing on the road against a to-be-determined opponent in the first round of the MAC tournament.

“I feel like we’re playing basketball with a lot of confidence right now,” Carlsen said. “We want to be the team that nobody wants to play (in the tournament).”

Huffman, G-K pull away from Woodstock Senior scores 10 points in fourth quarter to help Cogs advance to regional title game

The Cogs held a six-point lead and scored 23 points in the first half, but had zero points and only two shot attempts from the team’s second-leading scorer, Brady Huffman.

That all changed in the second half.

Genoa-Kingston overcame a cold shooting first quarter and pulled away late, as Huffman scored 16 points in the final two quarter to lead the Cogs to a 61-45 victory over Woodstock in the Class 3A Woodstock Regional semifinal.

Woodstock (18-8) was able to keep the game close most of the night, but Genoa-Kingston always seemed to have an answer. For as poorly as they shot in the first quarter, the Cogs picked the right time to start hitting shots. The Cogs closed the game shooting 7 for 8 from the field and 11 for 12 from the free-throw line.

G-K was led by Lucca, who finished with 20 points, and Huffman, who finished with 16 points after being held scoreless in the first half.

For Cogs coach Corey Jenkins, Wednesday was a great test for G-K. “This is our fourth year in 3A, and I think we showed we belong,” Jenkins said. “To beat a school like Woodstock that is twice the size of us is huge. Our seniors were big for us tonight and we hit some huge 3-pointers. Tommy [Lucca] did a great job of running the offense and finding the open man as he has all season. We’ve worked hard to be in this position.”

Lawrie adjusts to another new team

GLENDALE, Ariz. – It’s another season and another team – and an old position – for Brett Lawrie.

The one-time top prospect with Toronto, now 26, is hoping to restart his career and bring his trademark energy to the South Side of Chicago. His task, aside from adjusting to full-time duty at second base, is to help ignite a Sox team that sometimes seemed lethargic in a fourth-place finish a year ago.

“It’s all positive and everybody likes to have fun, but at the same time when we get between the lines everybody likes to ramp it up. When the bell rings we’re ready to go,” Lawrie said at Camelback Ranch this week.

“The personalities are nice but we have some guys who can play. They like to compete,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “That’s the fun part.”

“There’s definitely some energy in the clubhouse,” center fielder Adam Eaton said. “It’s only going to help the team.”

Ventura likes Lawrie’s energy, but that’s just part of his appeal to the manager.

“He’s a solid player. He’s a versatile player, a smart player as far as taking the extra base, baserunning, defense,” he said.

The Sox originally were looking for a third baseman when they sent two minor leaguers to the Oakland A’s for Lawrie during the December winter meetings. But a week later, Todd Frazier was acquired from Cincinnati,

With the recent addition of veteran shortstop Jimmy Rollins, and Tyler Saladino moving from third to short, the White Sox have completely retooled their infield.

“It’s just getting out there and taking ground balls and just playing beside them all the time,” Lawrie said.

“The more that you can play with each other you get more comfortable and just getting to know each other as teammates as well.

“Getting the reps and seeing the angle and repeating the double- play feeds and keeping it simple, not trying to do anything spectacular.”

Lawrie has played 80 games at second base in the major leagues, including 42 last year in Oakland. He was a full-timer at that position in the minors when he was in the Milwaukee Brewers’ system.

“When I’m at third, it’s just keep it in front of me, pick it up and throw him out, but you have to do that relatively cleanly because of the long throw,” he said. “At second, I can keep more things in front of me, and still have some time and not have to rush anything. But there’s a lot of other things – more room (on either side), double plays, covering the bag on steals, things like that.”

The focus in camp has been on quality of practice, Lawrie said.

“You give me 10 groundballs and I’m going to do all those 10 at the top of the game with good form and everything. I’m not going to be tired at the end of that. I’m going to get more out of that than if I do 50 groundballs and being tired at the end with bad form.”

Lawrie, a native of British Columbia, was sent by Milwaukee to Toronto while still in the minors, in 2010. He played for the Blue Jays until being dealt to Oakland after the 2014 season.

Toronto acquired Josh Donaldson to play third base in that trade, and while the Jays went on to win the AL East in part because of Donaldson’s MVP-winning season, the A’s languished and finished with the AL’s worst record, 68-94.

Lawrie hit .260 with a career-high 16 homers for Oakland. Injuries limited him to 70 games with the Jays in 2014, but he managed to hit 12 homers that season.

“I was happy for my (former) teammates but at the same time, you wish you could have done that when you were there,” Lawrie said. “That’s how baseball goes. I was happy for them and the run that they had, but now it’s our turn.”

Lawrie already knew Sox left fielder Melky Cabrera and catcher Dioner Navarro from their days together in Toronto, but he hasn’t had any trouble fitting in to a new clubhouse.

“Fantastic,” Lawrie said of his introduction to the White Sox clubhouse.

“The boys have been welcoming.”

Russell set for starting role at shortstop in second year

MESA, Ariz. – A year ago, Addison Russell was a young prospect with the Cubs hoping to make enough of an impression in his first training camp with the organization to get a chance with the big league club.

This spring, he’s in a much different spot – at 22, he’s the starting shortstop for a World Series contender.

Starlin Castro has been traded and Russell enters camp knowing he is the established guy at short.

“Conversationally, he is much more confident, easier to joke around with you and much more comfortable in his major league skin,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said after Wednesday’s work-

out. “I love it. He knows he belongs here.”

There’s more to it than just coming to the ballpark knowing he has a spot on the 25-man roster.

This season, he is also a married man and a dad to 6-month-old son Aiden.

Russell, who married wife, Melisa, on Jan. 9, had the reputaAddison tion of being mature beRussell yond his years. But now he has found another reason to come to the ballpark every day ready to work.

“I grind for them,” he said. “I do what I do just so that they can see me succeed. Everything I do is for them.”

What he did in his rookie year – .242

with 29 doubles, 13 home runs and 54 RBIs in 142 games – is expected to be just the start of what is to come for Russell, who was selected 11th overall in the 2012 draft by Oakland before being acquired July 5, 2014.

Russell was called up April 21 and soon went on a 12-game hitting streak.

He also dealt with making the switch to second base (86 games) before moving back to shortstop Aug. 7.

The first thing that struck Maddon this spring is how strong the 6-foot, 200-pounder was with the bat in his hand.

“I didn’t know he had that kind of power,” Maddon said.

“Watching him in batting practice right now he is really strong. I saw it a little last year in season, but I did not

know that going into the whole thing,” he said. “Last year at this time, we talked primarily about his defense, what a good kid he was and that he’d be ready at some point and help us as the shortstop of the future.”

The future tag has been removed and Russell feels more comfortable with it as the Cubs prepare for their first spring training game of the year today against Milwaukee at Maryvale Stadium.

“I’m a lot more confident and more comfortable with the guys,” said Russell, who is not in the starting lineup for the Cactus League opener. “I’m fortunate to have played with or against these guys. There are some new additions and I’m looking forward to getting to know those guys.”

prodigious wrongness reached critical mass Tuesday in a brutal 129-111 loss to the Heat. The Bulls are such a mess that you find yourself running from one fire to another. If it’s not Derrick Rose’s unreliability, it’s a Hoiberg offense that has never taken off. If it’s not Jimmy Butler questioning Hoiberg’s leadership, it’s a plague of injuries.

Now the raging fire is the lack of defense, which has been an issue all season. The Bulls are giving up 102.8 points a game, and somewhere Thibodeau is laughing through his tears – laughing because he knew the Bulls made a mistake by firing him after last season and crying because he cries for every defensive lapse in every game anywhere. It’s quite a burden he carries.

At one point Tuesday night, the Bulls had Cristiano Felicio and Justin Holiday on the floor, and I was thinking, “Who?’’

But the bench actually led a comeback, cutting the Miami lead from 19 points to six with about five minutes left. But then defense was required, and by the end, the Bulls had that shell-shocked look again. Derrick Rose finished with a plus/ minus of minus-19, and Pau Gasol had a minus-16.

I’m not convinced Hoiberg knows what good defense looks like, but I wouldn’t doubt that it looks like the Bulls play better defense in practice. They don’t have many healthy players who play well offensively either.

Hoiberg was not brought in for his defensive genius. He was brought in to make everyone forget Thibodeau. He has managed to do the exact opposite.

DETROIT – Patrick Kane had a goal and an assist 1:24 apart on power plays in the second period and Artemi Panarin scored twice, helping the Blackhawks rout the Detroit Red Wings, 5-2, on Wednesday.

Kane assisted Panarin on a 5-on-3 goal and scored with a one-man advantage to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead. Kane finished with three points, extending his NHL-leading total to 88 to match his career high set during the 2009-10 season.

Bluegrass band to jam at the Sandwich Opera House

hen Greg Cahill first picked up the banjo in the ’60s, he expected to just play for fun, but instead he ended up with a career that has spanned four decades and is still going strong.

Cahill is the last remaining original member of Special Consensus, a bluegrass and alternative country band that was founded in Chicago in the mid1970s. The four-member band will perform Saturday at the Sandwich Opera House, for the first time in more than a decade.

“I figured we were overdue,” Cahill said. “The Sandwich Opera House is a really cool place and

we have a lot of fans out in that neck of the woods. ... We’re really looking forward to being back.”

The show will be a mix of some new music as well as old favorites. Special C typically puts out an album every two years.

Two songs from the 2014 album “Country Boy – A Bluegrass Tribute to John Denver” won titles in the 2014 International Bluegrass Music Association awards and the 2012 album “Scratch Gravel Road” was nominated for a Grammy.

“We know what songs are popular,” Cahill said. “We try to have something for everyone. We have a couple of really traditional bluegrass songs, a gospel quartet or two. ... Our John Denver tribute was very successful, so we get

Cahill got into the folk music scene in the ’60s, when it was thriving in Chicago. Some of his musical inspirations were the Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul and Mary. In 1974, he quit his day job, and in 1975 the band officially hit the road. While members of the band have changed over the years,

the sound meets the same standard it always has, Cahill said.

“When someone leaves, we’re not trying to replace exactly what the person did,” he said. “We try to bring people in of the same standard musically, but we just try to grow. At this point we have established a band sound, so people coming in have a feel for that.”

The biggest thing that has changed in the music scene is the advent of things like YouTube and iTunes, Cahill said.

“The music has taken its twists and turns,” he said. “No one wants to define bluegrass music and I think that’s a good thing. It has grown tremendously. ... There are so many young people coming out that are great bluegrass musicians.”

Boston’s Somos Stage Coach to bring ‘Mary Poppins’ to life will play The House Café DAILY CHRONICLE

DAILY CHRONICLE Somos will bring its spring tour with Petal and The Superweaks to DeKalb’s House Café on March 16.

Formed in Boston in 2012, Somos consists of Michael Fiorentino (vocals/bass), Phil Haggerty (guitar), Justin Hahn (guitar) and Evan Deges (drums). Since the 2014 release of its debut album, “Temple of Plenty,” the band has been featured with Pitchfork, Noisey and more.

The band recently released the album “First Day Back.” Fans can pick up the album now via MerchNow or iTunes. It also is streaming in full on the official Hopeless Records YouTube channel.

“We are very proud of ‘First Day Back’,” Fiorentino said in a news release. “Musically, I think it represents a step forward and highlights a number of new influences and styles. In terms of lyrics, I attempted to incorporate themes of alienation and struggle but also resistance and resilience.”

The magic and optimism of “Mary Poppins” will spring to life at Stage Coach Theater on March 10 through March 20 with 11 performances.

Longtime, talented Stagecoachers Judy O’Connor and John Feken are the musical directors for the orchestra of almost 20. The large cast of more than 70 and production crew of more than 30 are being guided by director Jan Kuntz. After a difficult surgery almost a year ago, she doubted her fortitude for such a large undertaking, but a short while ago Kuntz found her Golden Book of “Mary Poppins” that she bought in 1954 right after seeing the movie, in a forgotten basket. This was her sign to go forward and bring this classic to the live stage.

Despite the stage version being different from the Disney movie, there are plenty of well-known scenes and songs such as “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and “Let’s Go Fly a Kite.”

There is more background about the Banks family and a new song, “Anything Can Happen If You Let It,” which speaks volumes about the family’s story.

This is the first show of the Stage Coach Players’ 70th season. The summer season of six shows – “The Laramie Project,” “My Fair Lady,” “The Devil’s Disciple,” “Into the Woods,” “The Dixie Swim Club,” and “The Game’s Afoot” – offers comedy, music, tragedy and mystery. The final show for the holidays will be “A Christmas Carol, The Musical.”

Sunday, March 20, in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall, located on Northern Illinois University’s campus.

The concert, directed by Gene Vanden Bosch, will open with “Under the Double Eagle” by Josef Wagner. This is a very stately march arranged by Andrew Glover. Next, the audience will be transported to France for an arrangement of “French Festival” arranged by Glenn Osser. Very familiar tunes will have the audience humming along. From there, it is off to Ireland for “Irish Tune from County Derry” for Military Band.

Pierre Leemans’ “Marche des Parachutistes Belges” will be followed by the ever-popular “Malaguena,” arranged by Sammy Nestico. The first part of the concert will be rounded out with the march from Gustav Holst’s “First Suite for Band.” There will be a 15-minute intermission.

The second half of the concert will feature John Williams’ music from “Star Wars – The Marches.”

This includes the Main Theme, the Parade of the Ewoks, the Imperial March, Augie’s Great Municipal Band, and the Throne Room, all from various “Star Wars” movies.

Johannes Hanssen’s Norwegian march “Valdres” will follow, and then it is off to Italy for Longfield’s “Italian Holiday.” This brings excerpts including

The Kishwaukee Concert Band is supported by the DeKalb County Community Foundation and the

Mary E. Stevens Concert and Lecture Fund.

The band is made up of adult volunteers who have played a wind or percussion instrument in the past, and enjoy playing good music and having fun.

Rehearsals are from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. Wednesdays in the Huntley Middle School band room. No auditions are necessary, and clarinets are very welcome.

Patrick Johnson’s lecture will address his ongoing ethnographic work with Southern black lesbians, including a discussion of the challenges to conducting oral histories of black lesbians based not only on gender differences between his subjects and himself, but also the content of their stories.

Johnson is the Carols Montezuma Professor of Performance Studies & African American Studies at Northwestern University, and the author of “Sweet Tea: Black Gay Men of the South – An Oral History” (Univ. of North Carolina Press, 2008), which was a Stonewall Book Award Honor Book.

Research on Zika virus needed Dear Readers: In yesterday’s column, I answered questions about the Zika virus.

Today, I’d like to answer several more, and also talk about how we can protect ourselves against this and other epidemics.

• What should I do to protect myself against Zika virus? In my opinion, as of today, there is no reason for most people living in the United States and Canada to be concerned about this virus. The exception is women who are pregnant, who could be in the earliest stages of pregnancy and not yet know it or who soon could become pregnant.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised such women to avoid traveling to the areas of the Western Hemisphere where the Zika virus is rapidly spreading. That includes Mexico and many countries in the Caribbean, Central America and South America. You can find a constantly updated listing of areas with the virus, and much more information about the virus itself, at www.cdc.gov/zika.

Great Britain has advised men who travel to countries where the virus is present to use condoms for about one month during travel and after returning home, which seems like a good idea to me.

• Why are we suddenly faced with this virus we never heard about before? Because epidemics don’t explode until they suddenly do. Sometimes a virus (or other infectious germ) mutates in a way that allows it to more easily infect humans.

Sometimes it is carried to a part of the world where it never has been before, such as by a traveler. If the virus is carried by an insect, the environment can change in a way that favors that insect.

• Will global warming make Zika virus a

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff problem for the U.S. and Canada? The main mosquito that carries Zika virus is present in 12 states in the southern U.S. A related mosquito is present in 30 states. With further global warming, both mosquitoes will move farther north, since they prefer warm climates.

• Why don’t we have good tests, treatments and vaccines for Zika virus? Public health professionals long have known about Zika. We could have been developing tests, treatments and vaccines for it, but that costs money.

Without enough money, we can’t plan for every possible epidemic, or even every likely epidemic. So public health authorities have to prioritize. Until Zika spread to the Western Hemisphere and began to create serious disease, it was a low priority.

So will we be protected against future epidemics of Zika virus? Of Ebola? Of lethal influenza? To some extent. But the greater the investment we make in public health today, the safer we’ll be tomorrow.

In my opinion, we should be investing much more. In addition to protecting us against suffering, each dollar invested in public health saves many dollars in medical expenses averted. It is local, state and federal governments that invest the most in public health. That means we the people need to decide to invest more.

My dream is to become a cardiologist.

I have worked hard and excelled at my studies, as well as in my friendships and sports. However, my brothers have not. My older brother, “Aaron,” barely graduated from community college, and my younger brother, “Greg,” dropped out after his first semester.

I know it’s not healthy for me to think this way, but I am afraid I am going to be the one who has to support them. Aaron plays video games all day, while Greg does nothing. I’m afraid I’ll be stuck playing “Mommy” for my adult brothers for the rest of my days.

The South hand was a tad light for a two-club opening. But after East balanced with a takeout double, it was reasonable for South to jump to four hearts. Yes, if North were short in the majors, it would have backfired badly, but such pessimism almost never works at the bridge table.

East was tempted to double for a second time with his 18-pointer, but he was worried that if partner ran to, say, five diamonds, that would turn a plus score into a minus. (Note that five diamonds will go down one, but five clubs by East is unbeatable.

If East had doubled again, and West didn’t pass, he should have moved with four no-trump, which would have shown a two-suiter.)

South must hope that the spade finesse is working, so that he can collect these 10 tricks: five spades, four hearts and one diamond. But how can he get to the board to take the finesse? Only via the heart nine.

Declarer must be careful to ruff the second club high and to continue with a top trump.

Suppose East wins and leads another club. South ruffs high, cashes his last top trump, overtakes the heart eight with the nine, and runs the spade 10 to get home.

Then East will ruefully regret not passing out one spade!
