Outdoors author Harrison dies at 78 POLL The ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK – The last days of author Jim Harrison were not unlike so many days before: work, friends, cigarettes, vodka.

Best known for “Legends of the Fall,” Harrison died Saturday afternoon at age 78, found at his home in Patagonia, Arizona.

According to his neighbor of 18 years, author and editor Laura Chester, he had been at work in his study, where he “lit an American Spirit and was writing a poem by hand when the sudden and fatal heart attack hit him.”

“A caregiver discovered him when she brought in his dinner,” Chester wrote in an email Monday to The Associated Press.

Harrison wrote more than 30 books, including poems, novellas and nonfiction, and was beloved among writers and readers worldwide. Sherman Alexie, Mary Karr and Anthony Bourdain were among the

friends and peers who tweeted tributes over the weekend, and his most recent book, the novella collection “The Ancient Minstrel,” jumped from No. 2,364 on Amazon.com’s best-seller list to No. 181 between Sunday and Monday.

According to Chester, she and Harrison and 10 other close friends had met Friday night at the Wagon Wheel, their “local cowboy saloon,” where Harrison often enjoyed an iced vodka. It was a “spontaneous celebratory gathering” for Good Friday, with authors Philip Caputo and Jim Fergus among those on hand.

“We all sat in a circle with him outside in the yard where we could smoke,” she wrote to the AP. “Jim spoke to me about an upcoming trip to Paris and Seville he was planning for April,” Fergus told the AP, adding that Harrison was still grieving for his longtime wife, Linda, who died last fall.

Researchers report progress on concussion tests The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – New research bolsters evidence that a simple blood test may someday be used to detect concussions.

It suggests that a protein linked with head trauma may be present in blood up to a week after injury, which could help diagnose patients who delay seeking treatment.

The study involved patients at one hospital in Florida and the results are preliminary – a concussion blood test based on the two proteins studied or on other so-called biomarkers under review is likely at least a few years away from routine use.

But the new findings “are a substantial step” in developing a test that could be used in broad settings, from the battlefield to sports events and doctors’ offices. That’s according to an editorial published with the study Monday in JAMA Neurology.

Dr. Ramon Diaz-Arrastia, co-author of the editorial and a researcher at the government’s

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, said it’s likely that several biomarkers will be found to be useful for diagnosing concussions, “each of which will tell us something slightly different” about the injury.

Dr. Linda Papa, an Orlando Health emergency medicine specialist and colleagues tested nearly 600 adults treated at Orlando Regional Medical Center. About half had concussions from car crashes, falls, sports and other activities. Most were mild, with symptoms that included loss of consciousness, amnesia or feeling disoriented. The rest of the adults had fractures or other types of non-brain trauma.

Blood samples were taken starting four hours after the injury, then periodically for seven days. The tests measured two proteins nicknamed GFAP and UCH-L1, which are present in brain cells. In a head injury, the proteins can leak into the bloodstream, Papa said. Other research has shown blood levels of the proteins are highest with the most severe injuries.

Charles Ridulph asks for special prosecutor to defend McCullough trial verdict

eolson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Charles Ridulph is asking a judge to appoint a special prosecutor to defend the conviction of Jack McCullough, who was found guilty of the 1957 slaying of Ridulph’s younger sister, Maria.

In a filing Monday in DeKalb County Court, Ridulph lit into DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack, who last week told the court that McCullough was innocent and should be Maria released. Ridulph, a deaRidulph con at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. John in Sycamore, also complained that Schmack had notified him of his decision in an email on Good Friday, shortly before he left to preach at a worship service.

“My sister Maria was snatched away, raped and murdered, abandoned in the woods,” Ridulph, 70, of Sycamore, wrote. “And now, Richard Schmack has abandoned her yet again and he has done so for the wrong reasons.”

McCullough, 76, was convicted in 2012 and sentenced to life in prison. He is scheduled to appear before DeKalb County Judge William Brady at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday for a hearing on his motion for post-conviction relief. Ridulph has requested that the judge also consider his motion at that hearing.

McCullough is an inmate at Pontiac Correctional Center, and officials said Monday that he will be returned to prison after the hearing.

McCullough was 18 and known as John Tessier when 7-year-old Maria Ridulph was kidnapped on Dec. 3, 1957.

He was arrested in Seattle in 2011, after his sister, Jan Tessier, told police that their mother had made a deathbed confession that McCullough had committed the murder.

The timeline of events established by the state at McCullough’s 2012 trial was always one of the weakest points for the prosecution, and Schmack said that when compared against the FBI reports and new phone-record evidence, it doesn’t hold up.

In a five-page motion he filed himself, Charles Ridulph makes a plea for a special prosecutor for the case as an interested party under the Rights of Crime Victims and Witnesses Act. He claims that Schmack is wrong to have based his conclusions in the case on information that was not allowed at

trial, and that he is acting more as a defense lawyer than a prosecutor.

“What Mr. Schmack is doing is wrong,” Ridulph wrote in his filing.

“Mr. Schmack is presenting as truth that which the presiding trial Judge (James) Hallock and the panel of appellate court judges had ruled were not admissible as truth.”

After his 2012 conviction, McCullough appealed his case. A panel of appellate judges upheld his murder conviction while vacating two other convictions in 2015.

McCullough has maintained his innocence and contended that the information from FBI reports from 1957 and 1958 prove he could not have been in Sycamore when Maria disappeared because he was in Rockford meeting with military recruiters.

Schmack found this argument convincing. He said the police reports from the time clearly establish that Maria was kidnapped between 6:45 and 6:55 p.m., and that he has acquired phone records from AT&T at that time

proving that a call was placed by McCullough from the downtown Rockford post office to Sycamore at 6:57 p.m.

Ridulph said that Schmack’s conclusions are faulty and he should be required to prove them.

“Whatever his motives, Richard Schmack is on a crusade to free Jack McCullough, a self-admitted child rapist and killer,” Ridulph wrote, “and to allow him to do this goes against everything we as human beings should expect from one another.”

Schmack declined to comment Monday on Ridulph’s motion for a special prosecutor. However, he said he stands by his court filing.

In response to Ridulph’s motion, Janey O’Connor, McCullough’s stepdaughter, said Jack McCullough had never admitted guilt and disputed many other aspects of Ridulph’s motion including the timeline of events.

“How could all of those people have been wrong?” about the time Maria Ridulph was abducted, she asked.

DeKalb officials consider Peace Road project

DeKALB – Long-term planning is key to curb future costs, which is why city officials have begun considering a three-phase, $13.2 million Peace Road project.

The project would widen Peace Road to four lanes from I-88 north to Route 38, which would complete the road as a four-lane highway from the tollway to Route 64, which is important for future needs but could take 10 years to complete.

Northern Illinois University repurposes ‘Huskie Pups’ for different uses

DeKALB – Two years after Northern Illinois University spent $270,000 to bring a small fleet of electric vehicles to the campus for students’ convenience, they are being repurposed because they were underused.

NIU rolled out the “Huskie Pups” in July 2014, in time for the start of the fall semester that year. The idea was to shuttle students from the dorms on the west side of the campus into the heart of the area where the academic, administrative and other buildings are located.

The total budget for the project included the four electric vehicles, which travel up to 25 mph, and a sidewalk-widening project to accommodate them.

They were a supplement to the Huskie Line buses that had more extensive routes.

“Unfortunately, it just never caught on with students,” NIU spokesman Joe

King said. “So the decision was made last year to find different uses for the Pups.”

Now, instead of using them to shuttle students from the dorms or give faculty and staff a ride to campus destinations, King said the four vehicles will be used by the athletics and Student Affairs departments. The Pups are in storage right now, he said, waiting for warmer weather.

But when they are back on the pavement for the season – usually spring through late fall – athletics will use them to give people a ride from parking lots to Huskie Stadium for sports and events.

“Student Affairs gets a lot of use out of theirs in the summer months, during the open houses,” King said. “And they kind of use them the way they were intended to be used.”

Born: April 22, 1926; in Olney, IL Died: March 25, 2016; in Winfield, IL Joy M. Davison, 89, of Sycamore, IL., died Friday, March 25, 2016, at the Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, IL. She was born April 22, 1926, in Olney, IL. The daughter of Lamont and Jessie (Torrens) Forsyth. She managed the Sycamore Meadows Apartments for more than 20 years.

Survivors include her son, Ed Davison of Woodbridge, VA; 4 grandchildren, Lindasy (David) Davison Campbell of East Peoria, IL, Adam Davison of San Francisco, CA, Marty Davison of Boulder, CO, Chad Erickson of Streator, IL; 3 great grandchildren; one brother, Monty Forsyth of Evansville, IN; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Duane in 1999; and one daughter, Jeanette Davison Schammel in 2014.

Born: Sept. 26, 1943 Died: March 9, 2016

William C. “Bill” Jamison, 72, of Plymouth, IN passed away following complications associated with a long illness at the Indiana University-University Hospital on March 9, 2016.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Cecil and Mary Virginia (Bockover) Jamison.

Born in Logansport, IN on Sept. 26, 1943, Bill cherished the memories of his childhood home, Casa Loma, and the comradery shared there with his brothers and many cousins. It was during his youth in Logansport where Bill’s lifelong love of music, food, and cars began.

Bill graduated from Arlington High School (Arlington Heights, IL) in 1961 and Northern

Illinois University (DeKalb, IL) in 1965. He was an avid musician throughout his high school and college years, lending his skills on the Hammond B3 organ to a number of bands, most notably the Ravons, the Missing Links, and Paul Bearer and the Morticians. Following college, Bill’s dream was to own and operate a frozen custard stand similar to the Sycamore Drive-in from his childhood in Indiana, but was prevented from doing so by lack of capital. Instead, he put his degree to work and began his professional life as an educator, teaching high school Spanish in both Dundee and Carpentersville, IL. Bill left education to pursue a sales, and later regional manager, position with a company selling ice cream flavoring and toppings within the food service industry in the northern IL area.

Armed with industry knowledge, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a passion for frozen custard, Bill achieved his dream when he opened Ollie’s Frozen Custard in the spring of 1985. Located in his alma mater’s town of DeKalb, IL, Ollie’s quickly became a popular venue for frozen custard enthusiasts. During Bill’s time with Ollie’s he oversaw the growth and development of the business, eventually needing to relocate to a larger building (and parking lot) in nearby Sycamore, IL. Bill retired from the frozen custard business in 2001 and fulfilled another of his long-held dreams by returning to his home state of Indiana. After a long search, he found his “forever” home and settled in to enjoy the slower country life. In recent years Bill spent his days tooling around with local friends on cars, doting on his golden retriever Clancy, visiting with neighbors, and trying out new recipes in his kitchen.

Bill is survived by his many family and friends.

Following his wishes, public notification of his death has been withheld and a private memorial and burial service has taken place.

He is survived by his children, Derek Rempfer and Rachel Rempfer-Hill both of DeKalb, Danielle Rempfer of Malta; nine grandchildren; three brothers, Jerry (Diane) Rempfer of Michigan, John (Mary Lou) Rempfer of Sycamore, Fred (Georgette) Rempfer of Georgia; one sister, Sandra Rempfer of Malta; several nieces and nephews; his long time companion, Stacey Christiansen of Rockton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Ethan.

The funeral service will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday, March 30, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb with the Rev. Robert Vaughn of Malta Congregational Church officiating, with full military honors by DeKalb American Legion, AmVets and VFW Honor Guard.

Court refuses to hear Blagojevich appeal

CHICAGO – The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday dashed one of Rod Blagojevich’s last hopes to reduce his 14-year prison sentence by refusing to hear the former Illinois governor’s appeal of his remaining corruption convictions, including his attempt to sell an appointment to the vacant Senate seat once occupied by President Barack Obama.

In so doing, the justices let stand a July ruling by the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago that the Chicago Democrat crossed the line when he sought money – usually campaign cash – in exchange for naming someone to fill Obama’s seat. The justices did not explain their decision.

The lower court had handed Blagojevich a largely symbolic victory by tossing five of his 18 convictions and said he should be resentenced on the 13 remaining counts. No resentencing date has been set, but it’s likely to happen this year. In its ruling last year, the 7th Circuit said that even with the dropped counts factored in, Blagojevich’s 14-year sentence still may be fair.

The former governor’s wife, Patti Blagojevich, said in a written statement Monday that she and the couple’s two children were “incredibly disappointed.”

“This was, of course, not the outcome that Rod, our daughters Amy and Annie, had hoped and prayed for,” she said.

“But we continue to have faith in the system and an unshakable love for Rod. We long for the day that he will be back home with us.”

59-year-old Blagojevich’s appeal after resentencing. He said that’s because one argument prosecutors made against the appeal being heard was that resentencing and other legal steps need to play out before the court should entertain the possibility of taking on the case.

“So we could consider going back to the Supreme Court again,” Goodman said.

The U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago declined to comment.

Blagojevich, who is in his fourth year at a federal prison in Colorado, loudly proclaimed his innocence after his 2008 arrest, including on TV talk shows and as a contestant on “Celebrity Apprentice”

when it still starred now-presidential candidate Donald Trump. Blagojevich argued before, during and after his two trials that he had merely been participating in legal, run-of-the-mill politicking.

The request for the Supreme Court to consider Blagojevich’s appeal was a long shot. The high court hears only around 80 cases a year out of more than 10,000 requests and typically accepts cases that raise weighty and divisive legal issues.

In their 83-page petition asking the Supreme Court to hear the appeal, defense attorneys argued that the line between the legal and illegal trading of political favors was blurred, potentially making elected officials everywhere sub-

ject to prosecution for cutting political deals.

In its July ruling, the 7th Circuit said Blagojevich broke the law when he sought money for naming someone to Obama’s old seat. But it tossed counts linked to him asking for a Cabinet seat for himself. It said secretly trading favors based on politicians’ executive powers was a legitimate way to get things done for constituents.

The three-judge appellate panel added that evidence on the 13 remaining counts, which included Blagojevich trying to squeeze a children’s hospital for a campaign contribution, was “overwhelming.”

“That could allow us to make that project occur sooner,” Laskowski said.

“We’re no longer looking into 2025. …

We might be able to push it up to 2020.”

One of the requirements of the economic development grant is that pri-

vate contributions are obtained, so municipalities can demonstrate the economic growth and job retention or creation that the project would allow.

Mayor John Rey said he thought that DeKalb was a strong contender for

the grant and favored the project.

“It really addresses the safety of transportation,” he said. “It provides for the increased traffic volume that route is seeing and is promotes economic growth in the region.”

She is survived by one son, Roger Striker and wife, Barbara of Okeechobee, FL; one granddaughter, Dawn Roberts and husband, Ken of San Diego, CA; one brother, Gerald Martinson of Hinckley, IL; one sister, Dorothy Challand of Libertyville, IL; and many nieces and nephews and was loved by all.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, three brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be in Du Quoin, IL and a graveside service will be held at Noon, Wednesday, March 30, 2016, in the Malta Cemetery at Malta, IL.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Police shot a man on Monday after he pulled a weapon at a U.S. Capitol checkpoint as spring tourists thronged Washington, authorities said. The suspect was previously known to police.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital, and a female bystander also suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.

Capitol Chief of Police Matthew R. Verderosa declined to confirm reports that the suspect was the same man who was arrested last October for disrupting House proceedings, yelling he was a “Prophet of God.” That man, 66-year-old Larry Dawson of Tennessee, was issued a “stay away order” by D.C. Superior Court in October, telling him to keep away from the Capitol grounds, court documents show.

The U.S. Capitol was on lockdown for about an hour Monday and the White House also was briefly locked down. As the capital teemed with spring tourists in town to view the cherry blossoms, staff members and visitors to the Capitol were rushed into offices and told to shelter in place.

“We do believe this is an act of a single person who has frequented the Capitol grounds before and there is no reason to believe that this is anything more than a criminal act,” Verderosa told reporters. He said it was unclear how many officers fired their guns. Initial reports had said an officer was injured but that proved

wrong. Verderosa said the suspect’s vehicle had been found on Capitol grounds and was being seized.

The police chief said the suspect was undergoing surgery but provided no information on his condition. Later Monday, George Washington University Hospital spokeswoman Susan Griffiths said it had treated one patient from the Capitol incident for minor injuries and planned to release the patient shortly, but she did not identify the person.

Monday’s event unfolded with Congress on recess and lawmakers back in their districts.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., issued a statement thanking Capitol Police, as did other congressional leaders. “This evening our thoughts and prayers are with all those who faced danger today,” Ryan said.

The sprawling Capitol Visitors Center where the shooting occurred remained closed into the evening as the incident was being investigated, while the Capitol itself and nearby office buildings reopened.

Visitors were turned away from the Capitol in the immediate aftermath of the shooting as emergency vehicles flooded the street and the plaza on the building’s eastern side.

Police, some carrying long guns, cordoned off the streets immediately around the building.

Cathryn Leff of Temecula, California, in town to lobby with the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, said she was going through security at the main entrance to the Capitol Visitors Center when police told people to leave immediately.

March Madness means visitor dollars and more

Spring has certainly sprung at the DeKalb County Visitors Bureau.

Two weeks ago, we helped host more than 5,000 visitors for the Illinois Elementary School Association State wrestling DCCVB championships.

We also hosted IHSA basketball Supersectional doubleheaders on successive weeks at the NIU Convocation Center, and cheered on our NIU Huskie men’s basketball team as they competed in the first round of the Mid-American Conference championships. The team advanced to Cleveland to compete in the MAC quarterfinals but fell to Ohio, 79-62. Congratulations to the team, Coach Mark Montgomery and his staff on one of the most successful seasons in 20 years.

I just returned from the Governor’s Conference on Tourism March 21-23 in Springfield, where more than 400 tourism professionals gathered to network and discuss tourism trends and marketing.

Our thanks goes out to Nick Nagele and the entire team at Whiskey Acres for sponsoring and participating in the vendor trade show at the conference. Nick not only met Abe Lincoln and Mary Todd but I think he met every one of the 400-plus tourism professionals that attended. He made sure that DeKalb County tourism and Whiskey Acres Distilling Co. was top of mind throughout the entire conference. Whiskey Acres is open from 1:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday or for private events.

Community Expo to showcase DeKalb, Sycamore businesses

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Local businesses will gather Wednesday at DeKalb High School for the Community Expo, a combined effort between the DeKalb and Sycamore chambers of commerce.

The expo will showcase popular restaurants and shops from both cities and for the first time will include a Northern Illinois University STEM and STEAM booth. There, people of all ages can interact with a Lego robot, play online games, and take part in a hearing and vision demonstration.

“It’s the same power-packed lineup of activities and businesses,” Sycamore Chamber Marketing and Events Director Amber Gerardy-Robinson said.

The expo is open to the public from 4 to 7 p.m.

This campaign will rotate four ads and run through June. We already have seen an increase in requests for our guide, click-thrus and Facebook likes.

Our first ad campaign results with the firm ROI numbers will be available in April, and I look forward to sharing those in a future column.

We have been reaching out to local attractions and restaurants to secure discounts and special promotions for the more than 1,800 MS: Tour de Farms bike riders that will make DeKalb County their destination June 25-26. To date, we have helped block more than 350 rooms for this event.

The estimated economic impact from this group is anticipated to be more than $160,000. That doesn’t account for all the rental fees for venues and other local services needed to make the event run smoothly.

Our bureau closed out March sending our quarterly events enewsletter to more than 6,500 leisure travelers from our “opt-in” list. Key area events were highlighted and promoted to prompt visitors to make their plans to visit DeKalb County.

Cuba thaw hopeful for Ill. farmers

President Barack Obama’s historic visit to Cuba this week not only symbolized a dramatic thawing of diplomatic relations, but a hopeful sign for Illinois farmers.

Cuba represents a potential larger market for the commodities Illinois farmers grow, particularly since the island nation, 90 miles off the Florida coast, imports about 85 percent of its food.

With commodity prices down from last year, farmers could use all the help they can get to boost demand, and therefore, prices, for their crops.

We compared market prices for corn, soybeans and wheat to those from a year ago; corn is down 4 percent, soybeans off 7 percent, and wheat is down 12 percent.

U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, an East Moline Democrat, accompanied the Obama delegation to Cuba. It was her second trip there in six months.

In October, Bustos traveled to Cuba on a trip sponsored by the Illinois Cuba Working Group. This organization has studied the potential for agricultural trade with Cuba. It believes, if trade barriers come down, there could be about $120 million in farm-related trade for Illinois agriculture.

Compare that with $24 million in Illinois corn and soybean exports to Cuba in 2014, which is a drop from the $66 million in Illinois exports as recently as 2008, and you begin to grasp the opportunity that presents itself.

The total U.S. ag trade with Cuba, by the way, could be more than $1 billion, the working group stated.

After her trip last fall, Bustos said her top priority is to give Cuba access to credit, an advantage granted to other U.S. trading partners. Without it, Cuba, which is not a wealthy country, has to pay cash up front for ag products.

Bustos, a member of the House Agriculture Committee, should use her position, and newly gained experience from her travels, to further promote an expansion of markets for Illinois farmers.

The thaw in U.S.-Cuban relations looks to be good news for agriculture. We look forward to its benefits for farmers and the rural communities where they live.

Lack of employee names a ‘tempest in a teapot’

Chairman of the Kishwaukee College board On March 23 the Daily Chronicle published an editorial castigating Kishwaukee College officials for seeking to keep secrets. As chairman of the Board of Trustees at Kish College, I feel that it is my responsibility to respond.

Trustees are unpaid, nonpartisan, district residents who are elected by district voters. Trustees approve policies and budgets and are charged with hiring and advising the college president.

In actual practice at Kish College, trustees are the eyes and ears of the community who make sure that the college is fiscally conservative and focused on continuing to provide top-quality, affordable educational opportunities for students.

As everyone in Illinois knows, our legislature, led by House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton, has not passed a balanced budget for the fiscal year that began last July 1, and Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed most of the unbalanced budget that was passed.

Public higher education institutions including universities and community colleges have received no funding for almost nine months.

As time passed and it became apparent that Kish College was unlikely to receive any state funding for the current fiscal year and as uncertain-

ty increased about funding for the next fiscal year, trustees encouraged college employees to make plans to continue to provide the education that our students expect and deserve, while trying to close a $5 million annual loss of state support, which accounted for 22 percent of the total budget.

Over the past 11 years, the college has been able to build a $6 million reserve that has enabled us to survive in the short term, but that will be depleted in 2017 if the Legislature and the governor continue on their current divergent paths.

About 80 percent of Kish College operational expenses are salary and benefits for employees. Unfortunately, there was no way to close the budget gap without reducing the number of employees. Senior staff has spent many hours planning which personnel cuts would least impact students.

About 18 open positions remain unfilled and, at the March 8 Board of Trustees meeting, an additional 24 positions were eliminated, with the affected employees receiving compensation through June 30.

I personally appreciate the commitment to the college of the departed former employees and respect the attitude and willingness of the remaining employees who will fill the gaps left by their departed associates.

In meeting materials published for the March 8 meeting, the names of the 24 affected employees were not

included, with the goal of avoiding personal embarrassment for them because they were victims of a dysfunctional state government.

The Daily Chronicle took exception to that lack of complete transparency and submitted a FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) request for their names. When the names were provided to the Chronicle, they decided that publishing the names was not necessary; a well-written story was published that accurately described the financial impact of the cuts.

The Chronicle, as well as any other news organization and any member of the public, has the absolute right to transparency of public institutions as provided by Illinois law. Trustees, as representatives of the citizenry, are charged, also by Illinois law, with oversight of Kishwaukee College and each devotes their skills and considerable time to making sure that Kish College effectively serves its communities.

I suggest that the Chronicle could recognize that trustees are not “college officials,” but are representatives of our communities.

In summary, I would suggest that the Chronicle’s editorial outrage at “Secrecy at Kishwaukee College” could be characterized as a “Tempest in a Teapot.”

Canadian immigrant, directly employs at least 900 people, but reported having more than 162,000 “active drivers” in the United States as of December 2014.

Instead of being displaced by immigrants, Americans are being employed by them.

Of course, this flies in the face of the anti-immigrant sentiment being spewed by some high-profile politicians in recent days. Instead of talking about “building walls,” Washington leaders should be doing more to welcome international students to our universities and finally expand access to H-1B visas that allow skilled foreign workers to remain in this country.

Nearly a fourth of the 87 startup companies examined in the study had a founder who first came to America as an international student. Again this year, the federal government’s lottery to obtain one of the 85,000 H-1B visas available is expected to hit capacity within a week.

The United States should make it easier for the best and brightest entrepreneurs to permanently locate here.

Yet some politicians would make it more difficult. Republican presidential candidate and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz introduced legislation requiring those seeking a visa to not only have an advanced degree, but also to have worked outside the United States for at least a decade.

This legislation “would have guaranteed that almost none of the billion-dollar startup companies with an immigrant founder would have been started in the United States,” according to the study.

American politicians talk about leading the world in innovation, job creation and economic development.

Yet thousands of foreign nationals are unable to work and open businesses here. It makes no sense.

Visas can hamper entrepreneurs

The report “Immigrants and Billion

Dollar Startups” profiles several foreign-born entrepreneurs. Among them is Jyoti Bansal, who graduated from India’s top engineering school and has received more than 30 patents related to complex software systems. He founded AppDynamics, a California-based company valued at $1.9 billion that employs 900 people.

He arrived in America in 2000 and received an H-1B visa, which allowed him to work long term for a company here.

Yet the visa generally does not allow people to start their own companies.

“I waited seven years for my employment-based green card and I wanted to leave my job and start a new company but couldn’t,” he said. “What is most frustrating about the green-card process is you have no control over a major part of your life. I have friends who became frustrated with the uncertainty and after years of waiting, they finally left the United States.”

Does social connectedness explain Trump’s appeal?

How can one make sense of the electoral divisions in this year’s Republican primaries and caucuses? The contours of Donald Trump’s support and opposition don’t fall along traditional lines.

There’s not a regional division, for example. Trump’s best states have been Massachusetts, Mississippi and Arizona. We’re not seeing the divide between evangelical Christians and others apparent in the 2008 race between Mike Huckabee and John McCain.

We’re not seeing the suburbs/ countryside division of 2012, when in crucial primaries Mitt Romney carried million-plus metro areas and Rick Santorum carried almost all other counties.

Trump carried metro Detroit and Chicago – Romney country last time – but lost to Ted Cruz in Raleigh-Durham and Kansas City.

So what factor distinguishes Trump and non-Trump voters? My answer is social connectedness or, to use Robert Putnam’s term in “Bowling Alone,” social capital. Socially connected people have strong family ties and wide circles of friends, are active in churches and voluntary organizations and work steadily.

Putnam’s thesis is that social connectedness has declined sharply since the 1950s. But as Charles Murray notes in “Coming Apart,” that decline is uneven. Whites in the top third of income and education scales still have plenty of social capital. But there’s been a precipitous decline among whites in the lowest fifth of those scales. They work

VIEWS Michael Barone less steadily, attend church less often and participate very little in voluntary organizations.

Looking over the election returns, I sense that Trump’s support comes disproportionately from those with low social connectedness. My first clues came from the Dutch. Heavily Dutch-American counties in northwest and central Iowa and western Michigan, around Grand Rapids, were Huckabee and Santorum territory in past years.

This year, unlike surrounding territory, they voted for Ted Cruz, with Trump a poor third. Dutch-Americans have dense networks of churches and civic groups – unusually high social connectedness.

I saw something similar in strong Huckabee/Santorum southern Missouri. Southeast Missouri voted heavily for Trump, but southwest Missouri for Cruz. Southeast Missouri has high rates of disability insurance, an indicator of low workforce participation and low social connectedness. Southwest Missouri, headquarters of the Assemblies of God, has dense networks of civically active churches.

Similarly, exit polls show Trump doing worse with evangelicals who attend church weekly than with those

who don’t. This helps explain why Trump carried South Carolina and lost Oklahoma, where church attendance is higher.

Then there is majority-Mormon Utah, whose Mormon majority has higher social connectedness than any other American group. Only 14 percent of Utah Republicans voted for Trump.

Putnam reports that social connectedness is highest in states with large Scandinavian- and German-American populations and in Utah. It’s lowest in – no surprise – Nevada, one of Trump’s best states.

In the 13 states highest in social connectedness, Trump has gotten just 21 to 35 percent in primaries and caucuses.

In the 11 states lowest in social connectedness (except for Cruz’s Texas), his percentages ranged from 33 to 47 percent.

In states with medium social-connectedness but many retirees voting in Republican primaries – Florida and Arizona –Trump has run in the high 40s. He ran similarly in Massachusetts, where only a sliver of voters there are registered Republicans and their social connectedness may be limited to listening to Howie Carr on talk radio.

The good news for Trump opponents is that all of the 11 low-social-connectedness states (except West Virginia) have already voted. Seven of the 13 high-social-connectedness states are coming up, including Wisconsin on April 5. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Craig Gilbert finds Trump getting massive unfavorable ratings in the heavily Ger-

man-American area around Milwaukee, which unlike other Northern suburbs remains heavily Republican. Cruz has led Trump in two recent Wisconsin polls.

All remaining contests but one are in states with high social connectedness (Colorado, Oregon, Washington, the Dakotas, Nebraska) or medium social connectedness (the Northeast, New Mexico, California). Many states choose most delegates by congressional districts, and there are no sufficiently granular metrics of social connectedness for precise forecasting.

Still, social connectedness strikes me as the most useful explanation I’ve seen yet of the variations in Trump’s appeal.

It’s plausible that people with few social connections, who are inclined to blame elites for their problems, might see in Donald Trump, who promises singlehandedly to make things great again, “a sense of collective identity,” as Clare Malone of FiveThirtyEight.com writes.

So it remains unclear whether a socially unconnected minority will be able to impose their leader on the Republican Party and the nation, or whether the socially connected will rally to reject him.

To those who say immigrants are “taking American jobs,” here’s a morsel to mull over: Immigrants drove the creation of more than half the current U.S.-based technology startups valued at $1 billion or more, according to a new report from the National Foundation for American Policy.

The nonpartisan think tank examined 87 privately held companies tracked by the Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones VentureSource. Forty-four had at least one immigrant founder.

These companies were collectively valued at $168 billion and created an average of 760 jobs each in the U.S. At 62 of the companies, at least one immigrant helped the company grow and innovate.

“The billion-dollar startup companies with an immigrant founder excel at job creation,” according to the report.

From California to Illinois, these companies employ Americans in sectors including technology, health, energy and financial services. Uber, co-founded by a

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – With two run-rule wins in its first two games this season, the DeKalb softball team hadn’t exactly been tested in the first week of the season.

Week 2 started with the Barbs being down three runs to Geneva after half an inning, but DeKalb scored nine runs over the next three innings in an 11-8 win over the Vikings.

The Vikings (3-1) scored three in the first off DeKalb ace Morgan Newport, who has committed to play at

Northwestern next season. Only one of those runs was earned. In the bottom of the inning, freshman Mallory Warner ripped a two-run double, then Skylar Haring doubled to score Warner.

“I’m trying new things at the plate with my bat,” Haring said. “I’m seeing the ball well out of the hand, more than I have before.”

In the second, DeKalb (3-0) scored four more, including a two-run single by Haring. In the third, the Barbs added two for a 9-3 lead.

“We come back with three, then we come back with four, and it looked

like Morgan was settling in,” DeKalb coach Jeff Davis said. “Then Geneva pecks away with one here and one there, and you knew they weren’t going to go away, then we committed a few errors behind her, and she elevated a few balls to good hitters, and they hit them.”

Haring was 3 for 4 in the game, part of a DeKalb attack that banged out 14 hits in the win. Seven Barbs had hits, including a 4-for-4 day by Newport, who scored twice and drove in three runs. Warner was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Payton Montgomery had two hits for the

Barbs.

Newport settled down after the first, retiring eight of nine batters, as the Barbs built their lead at the plate. Newport, who threw a run-rule shortened no-hitter last week in her first start of the year, allowed 12 hits and struck out five in the win. She allowed five earned runs.

“A couple times, she got the ball elevated, and their three, four, five (batters) and so fourth are good hitters,” Davis said. “When you put a ball up high to an average hitter, that makes her a great hitter. So Morgan

The teams continued to trade baskets until the 6:16 mark, when Santa Barbara completed its comeback.

And as the Gauchos used a 7-0 run to take their first lead since a 4-0 start to the game, NIU suffered through a 2-for-10 drought. The Huskies, who led by 15 with a little more than two minutes left in the first half, shot a dismal 25.9 percent (7 of 27) in the second half after opening the game hitting 51.9 percent (14 of 27) from the floor.

“I thought we were taking decent shots, we rushed some, but the ball has to go in the basket if you’re going to advance in any tournament,” Montgomery said. “You coach player movement, ball movement – have some patience. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough of it. And they went on their

run, but we didn’t get a chance to make our run.

“When you shoot 25 percent you need a lot of other things to go your way.”

The Gauchos, who outscored NIU 32-24 in the paint, closed the game on a 6-0 run to ice the game after the Huskies pulled within one, 64-63, with 1:51 left.

The loss brings an end to the Huskies’ winningest season since 1990-91, when it won a school-record 25 games.

The Huskies’ 21 wins are tied for the second-most in a single season, in school history.

“I’m proud of my guys, they gave everything they could have to put NIU basketball back on the map,” Montgomery said. “We get invited to a tournament like this, we had some nationally televised games, we finished over .500 in the league and our three leading scorers are all underclassmen ... we have a promising future ahead of us.”

And shortly after Syracuse beat Dayton, 70-51, in the first round, Boeheim was at his cranky best, saying, anybody “that said we didn’t deserve to be in obviously doesn’t know anything about basketball.”

Syracuse trailed Virginia by as many as 16 before Boeheim switched out of his trademark 2-3 zone and into a full-court press.

That helped the Orange outscore the Cavaliers, 29-8, down the stretch to win, 68-62.

Syracuse plays Saturday’s late game against the Tar Heels, who beat Notre Dame, 88-74. It’s a matchup of ACC teams; North Carolina has beaten Syracuse twice this season.

The first semifinal pits Oklahoma against Villanova. Oklahoma won a meeting in December, 78-55.

A quick look at the teams and their roads to the Final Four:

When the word “Syracuse” popped up on the bracket for the first time, most of the so-called experts were crying “foul,” not shouting “Final Four.”

So much for that.

Coach Jim Boeheim’s “I Told You So” tour will travel all the way to Houston.

The 10th-seeded Orange became only the fourth double-digit seed to make the Final Four. They’ll be joined by a blue blood (North Carolina), a scrappy squad with no stars (Villanova) and the team with the tournament’s best player in Buddy Hield (Oklahoma).

Though it’s been hard to find many genuine surprises in this, a season full of unpredictable twists and turns, Syracuse making the Final Four would certainly fit that category. This was a program under duress, one that lost Boeheim for nine games early this season while he served punishment for NCAA violations.

This was a program that gave St. John’s one of its eight wins this season; OKLAHOMA a program that dropped five of six headThe Coach: Lifer Lon Kruger is back in

the Final Four for the first time since he took Florida in 1994.

The Star: That would be Hield – aka “Buddy Buckets” – who averages 25.4 points a game and cracked 35 twice in the four tournament games.

The Story: The Sooners were ranked No. 1 in February before losing three of four. Another loss, in January, was a triple-overtime setback to Kansas in the best college basketball game of the year.

LAS VEGAS – UC Santa Barbara hadn’t won a postseason game since the 1990 NCAA Tournament, when it defeated Houston in the first round.

Michigan State, featuring a young guard named Mark Montgomery, eliminated the Gauchos, who went on to suffer through a 26-year dry spell without a postseason win.

That drought ended Monday, at the expense of Montgomery’s Northern Illinois Huskies.

In the opening round of the inaugural Vegas 16 Tournament at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, Santa Barbara used a furious second-half rally to defeat the Huskies, 70-63.

“I think we played unbelievable basketball in the first half, but as I told them at halftime, you have to still close,” Montgomery said. “They started the second half making a run, and it

seemed like we couldn’t defend without making a foul. And we struggled to score in the second half. It seemed like we couldn’t get consecutive baskets, which kind of hurt us.”

Marshawn Wilson led the Huskies with 14 points, while Aaric Armstead had his fifth career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Levi Bradley added 10 points for NIU. While the Huskies limited Michael Bryson, who led the Big West in scoring with 18.4 points per game, to only nine points, Gabe Vincent erupted for 20, hitting 6 of 12 from the field, including 4 of 8 from 3-point range. Sam Beeler chipped in 16 points for the Gauchos.

“In the second half we didn’t control the tempo, and I think that was a major thing that we didn’t do,” Armstead said. “I think we did a pretty good job on Bryson, it was just a matter of some of the other players stepping up.”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – J.R. Hildebrand will get another shot at winning the Indianapolis 500 through Ed Carpenter Racing, which is expanding its team to three cars at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Hildebrand was leading on the final lap of the Indy 500 in 2011 when he wrecked in the final turn. His last full season in IndyCar was in 2012, but Carpenter has hired the Californian for the Indy 500 the last three years.

Carpenter will actually field a car for Hildebrand in both the 100th running of the Indy 500 and the Grand Prix of Indianapolis on the IMS road course. The car will be sponsored by Preferred Freezer Services for the third consecutive year.

“Especially going into this year’s 100th running of the 500, you know everyone is bringing their absolute best to the fight,” Hildebrand said. “After the experience I’ve had over the last two years with this team, I know that we’re going to be bringing a race-winning effort ourselves.”

Hildebrand finished eighth in the Indy 500 last year for Carpenter, and 10th in 2014.

This year will be his sixth Indy 500.

With his win March 20 at California, Jimmie Johnson passed the late Dale Earnhardt for sole possession of seventh on NASCAR’s list of all-time victories.

Standing immediately ahead of the six-time champion now is Hall of Famers Cale Yarborough (83 wins) and Darrell Waltrip and Bobby Allison (84 wins) and both marks are realistically reachable this year for Johnson. The win was the 77th of his career, and Johnson has been known to reel off multiple-win seasons. He won a career-high 10 races in 2007.

Waltrip, a FOX NASCAR analyst and three-time champion, is tied with Allison for fourth on the all-time wins list and is impressed with how quickly Johnson has amassed his victories.

Johnson has done it in 15 years.

“He hasn’t been in the sport all that long, so the amount of time it took him to break Dale Earnhardt’s record is remarkable,” Waltrip said. “Johnson is a phenomenon like Jeff Gordon, his mentor.”

Kyle Korver was fouled with 13.6 seconds left, and the former Bulls sharp-shooter made both, keeping the lead to three.

Dunleavy’s missed layup with seven seconds left, however, again put Teague at the line, as the remaining life was squeezed out when Teague made both.

“The second quarter where we had a double-digit lead to start and let them take the lead by halftime,” coach Fred Hoiberg said of the turning point. “But we went down swinging. That’s something we talked about. Stay together and keep fighting. Again, I’m proud of how they went down swinging.”

The “do or die” week continues Tuesday, as the Bulls travel to Indiana.

“We need [help],” Rose said of their situation in the standings. “The reality is we’re fighting for a playoff spot and we’re trying to figure out things along the way.”

CHICAGO – Team meetings aren’t saving these Bulls.

Did they show more life in the eventual 102-100 loss to Atlanta on Monday night? Without question. There was effort, there was fight, but there was also another big slap of reality.

As much as the Sunday heart-toheart team meeting was supposed to plug some leaks, what they still can’t escape from is the fact the Bulls’ front office completely overvalued this roster.

By the way, a roster that has now lost four consecutive games, slipping 2½ games behind idle Detroit for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, and tied with Washington at 36-37 with nine games left.

Heck, Mike Dunleavy even admitted over the weekend this team just wasn’t good enough, and reiterated that.

“Talent’s not everything,” Dunleavy said. “It’s about playing together, it’s about chemistry and some synergy, and those are things we’ve struggled with. Quite frankly, not just this year,

What couldn’t be deferred was a second-quarter meltdown by the Bulls, after they opened the game by outscoring Atlanta, 31-22, in the first quarter. The Hawks (45-30) took back control of the game in that second quarter, putting up 30 points while holding the Bulls to 14.

Still, the Bulls found themselves in it late, showing a pulse that had been absent all last week.

Jimmy Butler’s 3-pointer and then a dunk by Pau Gasol cut the Atlanta lead to four points with 4:33 left in the game.

Aaron Brooks made it a one-point game with a 3 of his own, putting the Hawks on the ropes, and then tied the score with a layup a minute later.

Atlanta’s Kent Bazemore, however, split a pair of free throws with 1:06 left, putting the lead back to one, but Derrick Rose missed a layup for the lead, as Atlanta again went to the free-throw line.

Baez’s thumb last concern

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Cubs’ last piece of spring drama hinges on Javy Baez’s left thumb.

Rather than face the Angels on Monday at Tempe Diablo Stadium, as the utilityman had once hoped, Baez simply played catch in front of Cubs officials at the team’s training facility.

Baez jammed his thumb sliding into first base March 16, and last played in a game March 20. Neither fact bodes well for him starting the season with the team Monday in Anaheim.

“The concern is that he has not had enough at-bats, that he’s not played enough in the outfield, at different positions in the outfield …,” manager Joe Maddon said. “So yes, we need to try to figure out how we want to process all that right now.”

Baez has made the team on merit, Maddon said. At issue is whether he’ll start the season on the disabled list. If so, he could stay in Mesa to get extra at-bats and rejoin the team when they play at the Diamondbacks starting April 7.

“We’re attempting to create an 11th hour to get this whole thing done with Javy,” Maddon said. “Getting more

definition about Javy is really important right now.”

Maddon spoke with president Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer about his options, and said they need to choose one soon. That could be Munenori Kawasaki or Tommy LaStella, both infielders, or out-of-options outfielder Matt Szczur. The Cubs could keep an extra hitter if they bring only seven relievers to Opening Day, Maddon was more concerned, however, with how his substitutions – from defensive moves to pinch runners to double switches – line up after that.

“If, in fact he’s unable to go, and say it were Kawasaki, then what would you need after that?” he said. “And that’s how these other pieces will fit.

Because Baez was there to fulfill a lot of different roles. …

“Knowing what Javy’s up to matters a lot.”

Starting infielders Kris Bryant and Ben Zobrist give him some flexibility, though. Zobrist has played at least 100 career games at shortstop, second base, right field and left field.

Bryant, who played 19 games in the outfield last year, moved from third base to left field midway through Monday’s 8-8 tie against the Angels.

“You don’t have to play them a lot in the outfield,” Maddon said, “for them to be comfortable in the outfield.”

He’ll have one of his outfield options back soon enough.

Center fielder Dexter Fowler injured his left side, Maddon said, when he crashed into a wall Saturday. He was removed Sunday after one inning – and after a home run – when tightness didn’t go away.

“It was more precaution,” Fowler said. “I feel good today. I feel a lot better.”

Maddon said Fowler looks stronger and is motivated by lingering on the free agent market until late February.

Maddon first thought Fowler was essential when he signed, and that sentiment has only grown.

“Everything felt good to that point,” Maddon said, “but all of a sudden everything felt right.

“I don’t know that we knew how important that piece was until that came back to us.”

The fact that Fowler’s injury wasn’t caused by rotating his body is a good sign. Still, he didn’t play Monday.

“If there was something to worry about, I’d be worried,” Fowler said.

“And I’m not worried at all.”

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – In Chris Sale, Jose Quintana and Carlos Rodon, the White Sox have a perennial Cy Young candidate, perhaps the most underrated starter in baseball and a budding star who, as a group, rate as one of the best starting trios in baseball.

What happens next, in the 4 and 5 spots of the rotation, is another story, one that could go a long way in making or breaking the Sox in 2016.

John Danks, since his shoulder surgery, is a 4.75 ERA pitcher. Mat Latos, coming off health issues of his own, like Danks has an accomplished top-of-therotation past. Latos’ second rough start in as many Cactus League outings Sunday (he’s given up 13 runs over 82/3 innings) was cause for alarm, considering there isn’t much in the way of options after Erik Johnson struggled and was sent out to minor league camp March 21 and Jacob Turner, signed for $1.5 million in the offseason, failed to distinguish himself as well.

Johnson and Turner’s struggles made the Latos signing look even more important, for a relatively inexpensive $3 million, on Feb. 9. The Sox would be feeling better about it if he showed more.

“It’s getting close to the end,’’ manager Robin Ventura said of Latos Monday.

“We have to pick it up.’’

Danks, after breezing through two consecutive scoreless outings of five and six innings, had a more typical outing Monday, giving up four runs on eight hits over six innings. After giving up an alarming three consecutive homers, he retired 12 of the last 13 Rockies he faced.

There are those who say 2015 No. 8 overall pick Carson Fulmer, who handled his first major league camp with aplomb and helps paint a nice long-term picture for the Sox rotation – Sale is under team control through 2019, Quintana through 2020 and Rodon just completed his rookie year – would be a better option than Latos right now. But the Sox aren’t going to push the 22-year-old, who needs more than 22 minor-league innings and five Cactus League appearances to establish a meaningful base.

He’ll start the season at Double-A Birmingham.

After 5 early springs, playoff berth thrills Ladd

mlazerus@suntimes.com VANCOUVER, British Columbia – As a 21-year-old rookie with the Carolina Hurricanes, Andrew Ladd walked into the NHL and won the Stanley Cup. Three years later, he reached the Western Conference final with the Blackhawks. The following year, he was a champion again.

So much for that old hockey axiom that the Stanley Cup is the toughest trophy to win in sports.

“I took it for granted, for sure,” Ladd said. “I’m sure there are guys in [the Hawks] dressing room that take it for granted now, too. A lot of guys know nothing but being in the playoffs. But I’m sure if you ask Brandon Saad after the season he’s going through, you learn quickly how tough it really is.”

Saad won 10 playoff series and two championships in his first three seasons. Now he’s in Columbus, traded away over the summer for salary-cap reasons, about as far away as possible from a third Stanley Cup. Ladd knows the feeling. After experiencing such wild success in his first handful of NHL seasons, Ladd – a cap casualty in the summer of 2010 – went four long seasons without sniffing the playoffs, before going four-and-out last year with the Winnipeg Jets.

So perhaps nobody in the Hawks room appreciated the magnitude of Sunday’s playoff clincher – a foregone conclusion in Chicago, but a significant achievement in many other NHL cities – more than Ladd.

“Coming back here, that was the most exciting thing to think about – having the opportunity to play in those types of games again, and ultimately to have a chance to win a Stanley Cup,” Ladd said. “I guess you gain a certain appreciation for how hard it is just to get in. And then

Ladd has been everything the Hawks hoped he would be since they gave up a first-round pick and Marko Dano to pry him loose from Winnipeg, where he was the team captain.

He has six goals and three assists in 13 games, with three goals in the last two – a pair of desperately needed victories that have stabilized a staggered team.

Ladd doesn’t have the speed that Saad – whose spot in the lineup he now fills – had, but his heady twoway game and net-crashing ability has meshed well with Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa on the top line. Ladd, who has been run ragged the last few weeks while getting his family settled in Chicago, said being on the road this week has allowed him to get to know all the new faces on the team, and reconnect with his old teammates. It’s still a little weird to be wearing a Hawks sweater again, but it’s starting to feel more

“I love the way he played the last couple of games,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “He brings that presence, he’s got some pace to his game, he has some energy. And he’s been reward with some huge goals for us.”

Ladd’s wife is due to give birth to the couple’s third child on May 23.

For the past five years, Ladd’s had all the free time in the world in late May, so it didn’t seem like much of a problem when they found out.

But back in Chicago, and back on a contender after a lengthy hiatus from relevance, Ladd’s hoping to be awfully busy when the baby arrives.

“That’s the plan, yeah,” he said with a smile.

Ladd is making $4.5 million in the final year of his contract, and like his new house in Chicago, he’s merely a rental. His uncertain future hung over him like a dark cloud for

much of a lost season in Winnipeg.

But the immediacy of the Hawks’ pending playoff run, and the perspective he now has on how rare such an opportunity is, has made it easy to keep the blinders on.

“The trade deadline’s a tough time,” he said. “But coming here, I know that the sole focus is to help this team win and help them get another Stanley Cup. That’s all I’m thinking about.”

NOTE: The Chicago chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association nominated Michal Rozsival for the Masterton Trophy, presented to the player who best exemplifies perseverance and dedication to the sport. Rozsival suffered a gruesome ankle injury in the second round last spring, and rather than retire as a Stanley Cup champion at age 37, he went through a grueling rehab to become an everyday player again by mid-November.

Healthy diet and regular exercise can help control Type 2 diabetes Dear Dr. K: I recently was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. My doctor said the best thing I can do is to lose weight. Why? Dear Reader: Type 2 diabetes usually starts after a person becomes an adult. It is by far the most common type of diabetes. It has been clear for many years people who are overweight are at much greater risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. In the past 20 years, research discoveries have begun to explain why.

We used to think of fat as an inert layer of insulation. In recent years, we’ve discovered the special cells inside fat (“fat cells”) are not inert at all: They are little hormone-producing factories. The hormones they make travel through the blood to the brain and other organs. They influence a person’s appetite and metabolism. They also influence the amount of sugar in the blood. Diabetes, of course, is marked by high levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood and urine.

Your doctor’s recommendation is right in line with guidelines from the American Diabetes Association (ADA). They urge all people newly diagnosed with diabetes to lose weight as the first step to controlling their blood sugar. The best way to lose weight? By eating more healthfully and exercising more.

A blood test called HbA1c estimates average blood sugar levels over the past two or three months. People with diabetes should aim for an HbA1c level of less than 7 percent. Losing weight and exercising more can decrease your HbA1c level by one or two percentage points. That might not sound like much, but a two-point reduction in HbA1c can put your blood sugar in the normal range, dramatically reducing your chances of developing a diabetes-related health problem.

Not all people with Type 2 diabetes are overweight. But even if your weight is in the healthy range, losing three to five pounds can help control your blood sugar.

What’s most important is the diet delivers fewer calories than you burn each day.

That imbalance translates into weight loss.

For lasting weight loss, choose an appealing diet so you can stick with it. (Of course, for long-term health, it’s also important to choose a diet based on healthy foods.)

So how can you cut calories? First, eat smaller portions. Also, substitute lower-calorie alternatives for high-calorie foods.

For example, have grilled fish and steamed vegetables for dinner instead of a plate of pasta.

It also helps to stick with a regular eating schedule. Plan meals and snacks that are no more than four hours apart to help keep you from becoming too hungry and overeating.

I have known many patients who were able to control their Type 2 diabetes with just diet and exercise. They did not need medicine. Diet and exercise really are that effective.

Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY My 29-year-old brother died Jeanne unexpectedly last Phillips month. He left behind a wife and 1-year-old son.

Although they lived across the country, she allowed us to bring him home for his funeral and burial. I took care of a lot of the arrangements on this end, while she took care of things there and made travel arrangements.

At 26, I never expected to be planning a funeral. But it has made me realize how unprepared I was for any unforeseen event. Please remind your young readers it’s never too early to take care of some basic plans, including a will.

As a single mother, I know how unprepared I was if something should happen to me. While it’s not a pleasant thought, it’s tougher on the survivors if nothing is in place. When it comes to mortality, it’s better to be practical and prepared. – Still Grieving, But Now Prepared Dear Still Grieving: Please accept my sympathy for the untimely loss of your brother.

Mortality isn’t a subject young people usually dwell on. But if they want what they have to be distributed according to their wishes, or if there are children involved, it’s important to put their wishes in writing.

Readers: This includes what you would or would not like done if you can’t speak for yourself. Do you want to be on artificial life support if there is no hope for your recovery? How do you feel about becoming an organ donor? Put it in writing.

Dear Abby: “Don” and I have been married for 44 years, and our marriage has had its ups and downs. We are now both retired. The problem is Don does not get along with our 43-year-old son, “Chris.” (He gets along fine with our two daughters.)

Don and Chris have very different personalities and little in common. Chris lives abroad but visits frequently and stays with us. During his most recent visit, his father was distant and rude to him. It has happened before and is hurtful to Chris and to me.

Blackwood is a useful slam tool.

However, inexperienced players rely on it too heavily. First, you should use it only when you are confident that you have the values for a slam and are just double checking that you are not missing two aces for a small slam, or one ace (or perhaps a king) for a grand slam.

Blackwood can also be unhelpful when you have a void. Look at today’s South hand. He opens two clubs and rebids two spades over partner’s two-diamond response. When partner raises to three spades, promising support and some values, South could jump to four no-trump, but after partner admits to one ace, what would he do? Does North have the useless heart ace or the invaluable diamond ace? South won’t know.

Instead, South should use control-bidding. Over three spades, he continues with four clubs, showing a first-round control in that suit (ace or void) and expressing slam interest.

Here, responder will continue with four diamonds, telling South about his ace. South could then jump to seven spades, because real bridge players don’t use Blackwood! Or he could cautiously check that partner really does have the ace. (Yes, South has a possible club loser, but, if necessary, he hopes to discard clubs from dummy on his diamonds and ruff the club six on the board.)

Here, after West leads, say, the heart king against seven spades, South ruffs and cashes the spade ace.

When East discards, declarer cashes his top clubs, ruffs the club six on the board, draw trumps, and claims.
