Is algebra an unnecessary stumbling block in schools?

NEW YORK – Who needs algebra?

That question muttered by many a frustrated student over the years has become a vigorous debate among American educators, sparked by a provocative new book that argues required algebra has become an unnecessary stumbling block that forces millions to drop out of high school or college.

“One out of 5 young Americans does not graduate from high school. This is one of the worst records in the developed world. Why? The chief academic reason is they failed ninth-grade algebra,” said political scientist Andrew Hacker, author of “The Math Myth and Other STEM Delusions.”

Hacker, a professor emeritus at Queens College, argues that, at most, only 5 percent of jobs make use of algebra and other advanced math courses. He favors a curriculum that focuses more on statistics and basic numbers sense and less on (y - 3)2 = 4y - 12.

Many U.S. educators, including the architects of the Common Core standards, disagree, saying math just needs to be taught more effectively. It’s fine for students to have quantitative skills, they say, but algebra is important, too.

“Every study I’ve ever seen of workers in whole bunches of fields shows that you have to understand formulas, you have to understand relationships,” said Philip Uri Treisman, a professor of mathematics and of public affairs at the University of Texas.

Bill McCallum, a professor at the University of Arizona who played a lead role in developing the Common Core standards for math, said he would oppose any division of K-12 students into an algebra track and a non-algebra track.

In New York City, home to the nation’s largest public school system with 1.1 million students, only 52 percent of the students who took last year’s statewide Regents test in Algebra I passed, mirroring statistics elsewhere in the country.

Eighteen-year-old Isaiah Aristy took the algebra Regents test twice and failed it both times.

Aristy, now a freshman at the Borough of Manhattan Community College who is hoping for a career in law enforcement, said he was good at math until he hit algebra.

But Aristy isn’t just repeating Algebra I again. BMCC is one of about 50 community colleges in 14 states that offer an alternative track called Quantway, developed by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, that seeks to develop quantitative literacy.

Project director Karon Klipple said the foundation devised Quantway and a statistics track called Statway in 2011 because of the sheer numbers of students dropping out of community college because of algebra. Sixty to 80 percent of community college students nationwide test into remedial math, and most don’t pass it, she said.

“This is where their hopes and aspirations go to die,” Klipple said. “They’re in college to try to make a better life for themselves, and they’re stopped by mathematics.”

Local children celebrate Easter with church egg hunt

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Every ounce of the unbridled energy a kid has Easter morning burst through the doors Sunday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

Sitting quietly through Easter Mass had taken a toll on the 4- to 9-year-olds who knew all along there were colorful eggs filled with their favorite candies waiting to be found.

“I colored, then I singed and then I sat with my parents,” 5-year-old Ava Stubblefield said.

Church was over and the children pressed their noses against the glass

doors, their wide eyes frantically trying to map the quickest route to the plastic eggs. By the time the doors opened, the group was nothing more than a blurry dash of pastel-colored button downs and taffeta skirts that squealed with the excitement of discovering a chocolate-filled egg hidden between the branches of a tree.

“I got Starbursts, Jolly Ranchers, Lemon Heads and Skittles,” 9-year-old Emilia Miller said proudly as she rummaged through her findings.

But it wasn’t her first treat of the day.

A special occasion called for a special meal. Peeps and jelly beans were already buzzing through her system before the

day had begun.

“I got up really early and ate a bit of candy for breakfast,” she said.

In fact, most of the children at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 900 Normal Road, on Sunday started Easter with an early wake-up call.

“Before 6 a.m., I just wait until Mom’s ready to get up, and I go see what I got from the Easter Bunny,” 9-year-old Rowan Frontjes said.

Rowan and his twin brother, Oscar Frontjes, are the sons of the church’s reverend, Stacy Walker-Frontjes, who spread a message of new beginnings Sunday morning.

“It’s kind of the same message for ev-

erybody, which is Jesus is alive and he is resurrecting all around us,” she said.

The idea of spring after months of cold and darkness, is particularly important for those who have struggled this winter season.

“Winter doesn’t last forever,” she said. “Spring comes again.”

But in the middle of a sugar rush, the story of Easter was lost on Ava, who swung her legs excitedly as she sat in the holiday dress her grandma made her, and played with the American Girl Doll gifted to her by the Easter Bunny.

“I think they talked about Jesus,” she said.

McCullough case to go before judge Tuesday

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Jack McCullough has long maintained he did not kill Maria Ridulph in 1957, and now that the DeKalb County State’s Attorney concurs, at least one expert said it is likely he will go free.

It could happen as soon as Tuesday, when DeKalb County Judge William Brady will preside over a hearing for McCullough’s latest petition for post-con- Richard viction relief.

Schmack On Friday, State’s Attorney Richard Schmack filed paperwork agreeing with McCullough’s request that his 2012 conviction be vacated.

If Schmack’s findings are well-supported – and he filed more than 150 pages in court last week – Northern Illinois University Associate Dean of Law Marc Falkoff said it would be difficult for Brady to find reason to keep McCullough in prison.

“In the face of a strong state petition to vacate a petition, and the prosecutor agreeing that an innocent person is in prison – if the judge were to do anything other than vacate, release, and overturn his judgment, I promise that would be national news,” Falkoff said.

McCullough, 76, lived near Maria Ridulph when the 7-year-old girl disappeared from the corner of Archie Place and Center Cross Street on Dec. 3, 1957. McCullough was 17 and known as John Tessier at the time of the crime.

He has long maintained he was visiting Air Force recruiters in Rockford at the time Maria disappeared, and that FBI reports from the time prove this.

“If all parties had read the documents, it should have caused a reasonable person to conclude that I could not have been [the kidnapper] because at the exact time of the kidnapping, I was in Rockford, 40 miles away,” McCullough wrote in a 2012 letter to the Daily Chronicle.

If Brady agrees to vacate McCullough’s conviction Tuesday, it would reverse the findings of several investigators, prosecutors and judges who have concluded that McCullough was responsible for the

But Schmack said his review of police reports from 1957 and ’58 established that Maria was kidnapped between 6:45 and 6:55 p.m., and that new evidence in the form of records from Illinois Bell confirming that McCullough placed a collect call from the downtown Rockford Post Office at 6:57 p.m. proves he never could have abducted the girl.

Those police reports were excluded from McCullough’s 2012 trial – and a panel of appellate judges found in 2015 that was proper.

The documents, the courts have held, are hearsay and do not establish an alibi other than those given

by McCullough and his family members.

Schmack’s predecessor, Clay Campbell, was state’s attorney when McCullough was convicted in September 2012 by Judge Robert Hallock, in what became known as the oldest cold case to successfully be prosecuted in U.S. history.

The prosecution mounted a circumstantial case that relied on what McCullough’s defenders have argued was suspect information – a deathbed confession from a woman on medication, jailhouse infor-

mants, and people’s recollection of events from more than 50 years ago.

In convicting McCullough, Hallock said he found their testimony credible.

In December 2012, McCullough was sentenced to life in prison.

At trial, prosecutors had said that Maria was abducted earlier in the day, and some point to a State Police report in 1958 that postulated the crime occurred earlier.

A panel of judges in the Illinois

Second District Appellate Court in 2015 issued a 53-page ruling that found the reports had been correctly excluded at trial.

They found that a deathbed confession of McCullough’s mother from 1994, which rekindled the case after it was reported to police, should not have been allowed, but said that the judge had not relied on it heavily in his verdict.

In a ruling that threw out a related conviction for McCullough, the appellate justices held that the police reports, had they been admitted, would not have altered the verdict that McCullough was guilty of Maria’s murder.

The Illinois Supreme Court declined to hear McCullough’s appeal.

DeKalb County Judge Robert Pilmer dismissed McCullough’s request for post-conviction relief in September 2015, calling it “frivolous and without merit.”

McCullough, with some help from Public Defender Tom McCulloch, filed an additional petition Oct. 13, however, asking the judge to reconsider his decision, and eventually was granted more time to make his case.

Brady is overseeing the case now, and if he vacates the conviction at the hearing at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the DeKalb County Courthouse, in sycamore, McCullough would be freed. “... The person who did it, if not Mr. McCullough, he may still be out there,” Schmack said Friday. “He may be deceased; he may very well be in prison somewhere for some other crime. Unfortunately, that’s horrible that there’s no closure when people thought there was closure.”

If his conviction were vacated, McCullough could be tried again, but Schmack said that probably won’t happen.

“It would be very difficult for anyone to attempt to try him,” Schmack said.

Richard Amato, the Republican who will oppose Schmack in the November election, said he spent Friday familiarizing himself with the 60-year-old case.

“Mr. Schmack has a lot of answers he has to put forward to the community,” Amato said. “It’s so important to the community, and it is important to the whole criminal justice system.”

Judge William Brady will preside over a hearing on Jack McCullough’s petition for post-conviction relief at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the DeKalb County Courthouse. If Brady agrees with State’s Attorney Richard Schmack, McCullough’s conviction could be vacated and he would be released.

DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott was surprised to read about Schmack’s findings Friday, regarding a case he believed was handled properly.

“I was shocked at his decision, because the process has been following our normal judicial proceedings, and I’m just surprised he’s intervening in that matter,” Scott said.

Some of those who were witnesses in the successful prosecution of McCullough in 2012 said they thought Schmack had used the case for political gain.

Jan Tessier, who testified about her mother’s deathbed confession that “John did it,” was among them.

“This is a political statement,” Tessier said Friday. “It comes at a time when he is running for office. ... He’s trying to win his office, so he’s going to say whatever he thinks is going to take him where the tide’s going.”

But Schmack is adamant he was only abiding by the ethical code he is expected to follow as state’s attorney.

“I didn’t file the petition. Jack McCullough did. Jack McCullough’s the person filing paperwork to try to get his conviction overturned,” Schmack said. “... If they want to vote me out of office because it took me three years to do this, that’s up to them.”

Despite speculation about whether his findings are part of a political stunt amid his campaign for re-election, Schmack suspects his actions will be unpopular among voters.

“I don’t know that this is going to do me any good,” Schmack said.

“In fact, I suspect that it may do me harm politically. But that’s really not relevant.”

Breakfast With Bunny draws crowd

news@daily-chronilce.com DeKALB – Breakfast With the Bunny returned to DeKalb this weekend underneath a clear blue sky and new roof.

The DeKalb Park District and Feed ‘Em Soup teamed up with the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce to continue the annual Easter breakfast, which has been held in the past at the The Lincoln Inn, 240 E. Lincoln Highway.

On Saturday, about 160 people filed into the Hopkins Park Community Center Terrace Room, 1403 Sycamore Road, for the $5 breakfast before the annual Easter Egg Hunt.

Scott deOliveira, DeKalb Park District marketing supervisor, said he was pleased the turnout was larger than expected.

The district “for as long as I can remember as a life-long resident, we’ve always done an Easter egg hunt in Hopkins Park, but this is kind of a new component that we’ve added in – collaborating with the Chamber of Commerce.”

Families were able to get photos taken with the Easter Bunny and color on Easter-themed paper.

The breakfast included ham, biscuits and gravy, and coffee for the adults awake on a Saturday morning, among other items.

This was the first Breakfast With the Bunny for 6-year-old Grace Kuehl, who said while she was thrilled to see the Easter Bunny, the egg hunt was what she looked forward to most.

“We enjoy the religious and secular [sides] … and were pretty excited to see there was an event,” said Heidi Kuehl, 40, of DeKalb.

Morgan Dugan, 22, and Michael Rodriguez, 31, of DeKalb, brought their 1-year-old son, Jeremiah Dugan, to participate in the day’s festivities.

Rodriguez said they enjoyed the breakfast and were happy to spend the Easter weekend with family, who he said the holiday was all about.

“We got here a little late, but it’s nice that they’re doing something for the community,” Rodriguez said.

DeKALB – Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced Friday that some students who attended a for-profit college may have been duped and, as a result, could be eligible for student-loan relief.

Madigan said that thousands of students who enrolled in programs at Everest Colleges can have the U.S. Department of Education forgive student loans they may have taken out to pay for classes at the school.

Everest Colleges are run by Corinthian Colleges Inc. The closest location to the DeKalb County area is in North Aurora.

Relief for students who attended that location would be available for those who attended from July 2012 to September 2014 and enrolled in the school’s electrician, medical administrative assistant, medical assistant and medical insurance billing and coding programs.

“Students who were lured into for-profit schools such as Corinthian deserve relief,” Madigan said in a written statement. “Today’s action by the Department helps, but I will continue to fight for relief for Illinois students who Corinthian and other for-profit schools lied to and took advantage of.”

Madigan’s office investigated Corinthian and said it found widespread misrepresentations to prospective students. The Education Department, which administers the nation’s federal student loan program, last summer announced an overall plan to forgive the federal loan debt of some students.

Friday, the department announced specific relief for students who were defrauded at 91 former Corinthian campuses nationwide, including at seven campuses in Illinois.

Students who are eligible for relief need to complete a form on the department’s website. They also will be contacted by the department, according to Madigan.

Supreme Court decision on Blagojevich appeal near

CHICAGO – Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich could soon learn whether the U.S. Supreme Court will hear an appeal of his conviction on charges of corruption that included an attempt to sell an appointment to President Barack Obama’s old Senate seat.

The 59-year-old Democrat had five of his 18 convictions thrown out in July 2015 and has asked the high court to overturn the remaining ones. He Rod is currently serving a 14Blagojevich year prison sentence.

The Supreme Court justices deliberated Blagojevich’s petition Friday during a weekly case conference, the Chicago Tribune reported Sunday.

The court typically issues orders on the Monday after deliberating a petition.

Decisions to not consider such petitions are usually noted without explanation.

In an 83-page filing, Blagojevich argues that the line between the legal trading of political favors and bribery has become muddled, potentially exposing politicians everywhere to criminal charges.

Inmates get creative in drawing attention to cases

CHICAGO – Inmates in Illinois and their supporters are getting creative in their bids to draw attention to their cases.

Emanuel rejects 3 finalists for police superintendent Selects chief of patrol to serve interim role

CHICAGO – Mayor Rahm Emanuel has rejected three finalists recommended by the Chicago police board for the city’s top police post and selected the force’s current chief of patrol as the new interim police superintendent, City Council officials said Sunday.

Emanuel is trying to replace Superintendent Garry McCarthy whose firing was part of a frantic effort to regain trust in the police department and his own leadership following the release in November of dash-camera footage showing a white police officer fatally shooting an unarmed black teenager 16 times.

Alderman Anthony Beale said the mayor’s office called him Saturday to inform him that Emanuel has selected Chicago Chief of Patrol Eddie Johnson as interim superintendent. Johnson, who is African-American and a 27-year veteran of the force, was not among the board’s recommendations. A former commander of the Gresham police district on the South Side, Johnson was promoted to deputy chief of patrol in 2012 and chief of patrol in December.

“While I supported the nomination of Gene Williams, I believe Eddie Johnson is equally suited to lead the Chicago Police Department and I support Mayor Emanuel’s decision,” said Beale, a former chairman of the City Council’s police committee. “Eddie Johnson knows Chicago, he knows the police department and the challenges facing our neighborhoods. He is a true leader and will bring the fundamental changes CPD needs right now. I look forward to getting to work with Eddie right away.”

Whoever leads the Chicago Police Department will take over during a time of immense turmoil marked by protests over police shootings.

“While each of the finalists had strong qualifications, the mayor did not feel that any of them were the complete package that Chicago needs at this time and thus none were offered the position,” Quinn said. “The

mayor called each of them individually late Saturday to let them know of his decision.”

A city ordinance allows Emanuel to appoint an interim chief and ask the police board for a new list of finalists.

One of the board’s initial nominees, Cedric Alexander, told the AP on Sunday that Emanuel offered him the job Thursday during a meeting in Washington, D.C., and the mayor told him he intended to make Johnson his first deputy. But he said Emanuel phoned him Saturday night to say he had changed his mind.

“He did offer me the position in D.C. on Thursday, and last night he called and said he’s going in a different direction,” said Alexander, the public safety director in Georgia’s DeKalb County.

NBC5 in Chicago first reported that Alexander said he’d been offered the position.

Alexander told AP the plan had been for him to fly to Chicago on Monday and that the announcement was to have come Wednesday.

“I would like to thank the Chicago Police Board for giving me the opportunity to apply,” Alexander said. “Clearly the mayor is going in another direction, and I would just like to wish the very best for the people of Chicago.”

Pope recalls victims of ‘blind, brutal terrorism’

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis tempered his Easter Sunday message of Christian hope with a denunciation of “blind” terrorism, recalling victims of attacks in Europe, Africa and elsewhere, as well as expressing dismay that people fleeing war or poverty are being denied welcome as European countries squabble over the refugee crisis. Tens of thousands of people patiently endured long lines, backpack inspections and metal-detecting checks Sunday to enter St. Peter’s Square. Under a brilliant sun, they listened to Francis deliver the traditional noon Easter speech from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.

Riot at Brussels attacks shrine; 13 anti-terror raids made

BRUSSELS – Belgian riot police clashed Sunday with hundreds of right-wing hooligans at a temporary shrine honoring victims of the Brussels suicide bombings, as investigators launched fresh anti-terror raids, taking four more people into custody.

Police used water cannons when scuffles broke out in front of the Bourse, which has become a symbolic rallying point for people to pay their respects to those who died in Tuesday’s attacks. Black clad men carrying an anti-Islamic State group banner with an expletive on it trampled parts of the shrine, shouting Nazi slogans. Ten were arrested and two police officers injured.

“We had 340 hooligans from different football clubs who came to Brussels and we knew for sure that they would create some trouble,” Police Commissioner Christian De Coninck said. “It was a very difficult police operation because lots of families with kids were here.”

Brussels mayor Yvan Mayeur expressed his disgust, with Belgium still in mourning over the suicide bombings at Brussels airport and subway, which killed at least 31 people and injured some 270.

“The police were not deployed to protect people from these hooligans but a whole other threat,” said Mayeur told RTL television.

People trying to pay their respects were also dismayed.

“It was important for us to be here symbolically,” said Samia Orosemane, a 35-year-old comedian. But, she added, “there were lots of men who were here and doing the Nazi salute, shouting ‘death to Arabs’ and so we weren’t able to get through.”

“We are all here today for peace, and for the brotherhood among peoples. Not for right-wing ideas. It’s neither the time nor the place,” said Theophile Mouange, 52.

Federal prosecutors, meanwhile, said Sunday morning’s raids were linked a “federal case regarding terrorism” but did not specify whether it had any links to the

March 22 attacks.

Thirteen raids were launched in the capital and the northern cities of Mechelen and Duffel. An investigating judge was to decide later whether to keep the four in custody. Five were released after questioning.

Suspected plotters also were arrested Sunday in Italy and the Netherlands, though few details of their activity were released immediately.

Tuesday’s bomb attacks are also tearing at the fabric of the government, justice system and police, and Belgium’s interior minister sought Sunday to contain the growing criticism of the government’s handling of the tragedy.

Interior Minister Jan Jambon conceded Sunday that decades of neglect had hampered the government’s response to violent extremism.

He said the government has invested $670 million into police and security services over the past two years but that Belgium’s justice system and security services are still lagging behind.

State Department: 2 more American victims

WASHINGTON – Two more Americans have been identified as killed in the attacks on Brussels, the State Department confirmed Sunday, bringing the total number of U.S. citizens confirmed as victims to four.

Officials have said previously at least a dozen Americans were injured in the attack last Tuesday.

Thirty-one people were killed and 270 injured in the attacks Tuesday at the Brussels airport and a train station.

ISLAMABAD – A bombing on Easter Sunday killed 65 people in a park in the eastern city of Lahore that was crowded with Christians, including many children.

A breakaway Pakistani faction of the militant Taliban group claimed responsibility. Ahsanullah Ahsan, spokesman for Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, told the Associated Press a suicide bomber with the faction deliberately targeted the Christian community.

The explosion took place near the children’s rides in Gulshan-e-Iqbal park local police chief Haider Ashraf said.

He said the explosion appeared to have been a suicide bombing, but investigations were ongoing.

The attack killed 65 people and wounded more than 300, said Deeba Shahnaz, a spokesman for Lahore rescue administration.

A witness, not identified by name on Pakistan’s Geo TV station, said he was heading toward a fairground ride with his wife and two children when he heard a huge bang and all four of them were thrown to the floor. A woman was shown crying while looking desperately for her missing 5-year-old son.

A spokesman for the U.S. National Security Council said that the United States “condemns the attack in the strongest terms,” describing it as a “cowardly act in what has long been a scenic and placid park.” Ned Price said the U.S. would continue to work with Pakistan and its partners to “root out the scourge of terrorism.”

North Carolina’s rush to bigotry It is pretty clear nothing was going to deter North Carolina lawmakers from their blind rush to enact legislation sweeping away basic protections for gay, bisexual and transgender people. Debate was a hasty 30 minutes; the span between introduction and the governor’s signature a mere 12 hours. Completely ignored were constitutional concerns about discrimination, potential harm to individuals or the reality that the supposed crisis being addressed (dangerous bathrooms) is a concocted issue.

Since facts and human decency seem to hold no sway with the state’s lawmakers, we can only hope that threatened boycotts of North Carolina by companies and others appalled by last week’s events open some eyes to the need to repeal this hateful law. Other states that are considering following suit – including Georgia, where a bill legalizing LGBT discrimination has been sent to the governor – should realize that bigotry is not only wrong but bad for business.

The measure signed into law late Wednesday

by North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) prevents local governments from extending civil rights protections to gay and transgender people and also bars transgender people from using bathrooms that do not match the gender they were born with. The effort, which McCrory tried to justify as stopping “the breach of basic privacy and etiquette,” was triggered by the adoption in Charlotte of an anti-discrimination ordinance. McCrory’s hyperbole is rooted in fiction about the supposed dangers of transgender people using public restrooms that don’t match the gender on their birth certificates.

It’s been encouraging to see major businesses willing to take a leadership role in speaking out against ignorance and prejudice. A number of high-profile companies, including Disney, Marvel, Time Warner and the National Football League, have threatened to pull out or curtail their business in Georgia if Gov. Nathan Deal (R) signs a bill that under the guise of “religious liberty” legalizes discrimination against the gay and lesbian community.

Raising concerns about North Carolina’s law were such companies as American Airlines, Wells Fargo and the National Basketball Association.

“We believe no individual should be discriminated against because of gender identity or sexual orientation,” read a statement from American Airlines, which has a hub at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. “Laws that allow such discrimination go against our fundamental belief of equality and are bad for the economies of the states in which they are enacted.” It is a principle that one would have hoped government leaders in the United States in the 21st century wouldn’t need to be reminded of.

VIEWS Cynthia Tucker just survey the current GOP presidential field, which is led by the narcissistic, non-Scriptural, thrice-married hedonist Donald Trump. Ted Cruz bet his presidential run on his bona fides as a true believer in the fundamentalist strain of Christianity, which emphasizes church attendance, public prayer and a narrow-minded moral code (at least for public consumption). But in primary contests so far, Trump has at least held his own with conservative churchgoers.

That’s the only thing about Trump’s baffling rise that prompts me to say a couple of hallelujahs. I don’t mourn the passing of fundamentalist Christianity as a commanding force; its adherents have done little to advance moral or ethical values.

With a precious few exceptions, they don’t promote social justice, or work to eliminate poverty, or campaign for compassion toward the “stranger” – immigrants. Instead, they have tried to impose their mean and rigid religious beliefs on public policy, misinterpreting the U.S. Constitution and misunder-

standing the civic underpinnings of a pluralistic democracy.

Their enthusiasm for Trump underscores what has always been true about that group: They have strong nationalist and authoritarian impulses; they’re xenophobes; they’re averse to social change. There also is, among some white fundamentalist Christians, a strong whiff of racism.

It helps to remember the early days of the late Jerry Falwell, who founded the Moral Majority in 1979 and arranged a marriage of convenience with the Republican Party. As pastor of the Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, he railed against the 1954 Supreme Court decision that desegregated public schools and denounced the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. as a “Communist subversive.”

Falwell abandoned that rhetoric after he became a nationally prominent figure, but he didn’t abandon his right-wing views on race. His foray into national politics began when the federal government moved to revoke the tax-exempt status of the white-only private schools – “seg academies” – that sprang up in the wake of public school desegregation. Falwell had started his own seg academy in Virginia.

Given the animating passions of Falwell’s followers, it’s no surprise that

so many conservative Christians have made a seamless transition to Trump.

They already had shown themselves to be flexible on their principles, so long as their politicians continued to support the policies that were really important to them. Those include contempt for the poor, suspicion of Muslims, and a nationalist rhetoric that insists on dominance on the world stage.

Bentley has hewed closely enough to that line to make it unlikely he’ll pay any price for his alleged affair. (For the record, Bentley has stated, unconvincingly, that he has not had any “physical” relationship with the staffer.)

For example, the governor supported the state’s extremely harsh law aimed at illegal workers, even though it originally included a provision (since struck down by a federal court) making it a crime to “transport” an undocumented immigrant. Some critics pointed out that could punish a good Christian who offers an immigrant a ride to church.

Neither Bentley nor his supporters minded a bit.

Obamacare is put on the back burner in presidential race

No issue has aroused more partisan passion over the past six years than the Affordable Care Act. Yet the law is playing only a secondary role in the U.S. elections.

Sure, Republican presidential candidates cater to their base by vowing to repeal and replace Obamacare, and on the Democratic side, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont promises to replace it with a government-run universal coverage system.

But it doesn’t dominate the dialogue and isn’t a top priority on either side. Among the most embattled Senate Republican incumbents, the campaign websites of New Hampshire’s Kelly Ayotte, Mark Kirk of Illinois or Ron Johnson of Wisconsin barely mention the ACA. An exception is Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania.

The explanation may be that for all its controversy and imperfections, the sweeping law has taken hold. “This is in the fabric of the nation,” says Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell.

To be sure, the presidential election outcome will be a determinant of whether Obamacare is reshaped, bolstered or downsized.

But even some skeptics acknowledge that its numbers are rather impressive. About 20 million more Americans now have health insurance than before the law was enacted in 2010; in the last enrollment period on the health care exchanges, 12.7 million signed up, almost 40 percent were newcomers. The expansion of Medicaid for the poor is making a mark.

Millions of Americans with pre-existing conditions no longer can be denied coverage; kids can stay on their parents’ plans until age 26, and health care inflation is the lowest in years.

Burwell, in an interview, noted that there are a lot of less-known successes, such as a sharp reduction in patient harm at hospitals. She acknowledges challenges, which she put in “three buckets”: reforming the health-care delivery system to encourage quality, not quantity, of care; addressing a few places where markets still are broken such as Alas-

ka; and making technical fixes so the law works a little better.

Critics find more. Premiums have soared this year in a number of states.

Congress, in a bipartisan move, postponed and is threatening to kill a few important provisions that could create budgetary and cost-control problems; 22 states where Republicans hold sway have refused the expansion of Medicaid coverage.

In the presidential campaign, the rhetoric still can get hot. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz says the ACA is “the biggest job-killer in this country. Millions of Americans have lost their jobs.” Over all, from March 2010, when the law was enacted until today, the economy has added 13.7 million jobs.)

But most Republicans insist that they would keep popular provisions such as guaranteeing coverage for people with pre-existing conditions.

Gov. John Kasich embraced the ACA’s expansion of Medicaid in Ohio.

The Republican front-runner, Donald Trump, has said he likes the mandate to get health insurance – the centerpiece of the ACA and chief target of most conservative critics – and he

wouldn’t let people “die sitting in the middle of the street.”

When speculation surfaced of a possible Trump-Kasich pairing, the conservative Weekly Standard lamented it’d be “The Nightmare Ticket for Opponents of Obamacare.”

If Republicans win in November, however, even Trump would have to try to dismantle the law. The targets: the Medicaid expansion, the mandate (though with some replacement), and cutting subsidies. The problem would be that millions of newly insured would likely lose coverage, creating a political backlash.

If Hillary Clinton is elected, she also would espouse changes to buttress the ACA. The emphasis likely would be on cost controls. Last week, her daughter, Chelsea, vowed that her mom would do something about the “crushing costs” of Obamacare.

The ACA may not play much of a role in the outcome of this presidential election, but the partisan controversy hasn’t gone away.

In the waning days of March, a scandal has engulfed the Alabama State Capitol as Gov. Robert Bentley fired his top cop, who then turned around and accused the governor of having had an extramarital affair.

The controversy engines hit high gear with the release of a salacious audiotape, in which the governor is overheard telling his listener how much he loves her and enjoys touching her breasts.

For all the inevitable handwringing and headlines, though, the accusations of Bentley’s romantic dalliance with a staffer -- long-rumored in Alabama political circles and seemingly confirmed when his wife of 50 years filed for divorce in 2015 – are unlikely to damage his political standing. Nothing to see here, folks.

Except this: The disgrace of Bentley – a churchgoing, Bible-thumping moralist – is just one more gaping hole in the mantle of sanctimony that has afforded the Christian right a special place in American politics for the last 40 years. While you will still occasionally hear rhetoric from the campaign trail that purports to espouse Christian values, fundamentalist Christianity – at least as a potent voting bloc – is pretty much a spent force in GOP politics.

Community Gardens to host organizing meeting DAILY CHRONICLE

DeKalb County Community Gardens will host its first organizing meeting of the 2016 growing season at 6 p.m.

Wednesday. The meeting and potluck will be at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb, 158 N. Fourth St. The event will be an opportunity to get an update on all the activities of DCCG and to learn of ways to become involved.

“We always have a lot of good local foods activities,” Dan Kenney, DCCG founder and executive director, said in a news release. “This year we are going to be having a bee keeper and seed-saving groups.”

DCCG is starting its fifth growing season. In its first four years it has expanded to more than 50 locations across the county. The group has coordinated more than 300 volunteers a year to raise more than 65,000 pounds of fresh vegetables for food pantries, meal sites, senior living facilities and others in need.

DCCG also has planted more than 100 trees and berry shrubs in three of its locations, the Annie Glidden Community Orchard, the Five Points Food Forest, and the Walnut Grove Vocational Farm.

DCCG also conducts workshops on basic gardening, seed saving, wild forag-

Croatian big man adjusting to life in America

eKALB – For a moment, Marin Maric thought it might be too difficult.

More than three years ago, the 6-foot-10 big man on the Northern Illinois men’s basketball team moved from Croatia to the United States while living on the campus of La Lumiere School – a prep school in La Porte, Indiana. He suddenly found himself living in dorms while knowing little English.

“It was difficult,” Maric said now.

“The first three nights I didn’t sleep.

All in my head was, ‘Why did I come here? I don’t know any English, I don’t know the culture.’ It was challenging.”

Maric had finished up school in Croatia and was coming off being a

part of his country’s U18 team that won the gold medal at the 2012 FIBA Euro Cup – a team led by Dario Saric, who was the No. 12 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. He grew up in the port town of Split, on the Adriatic Sea and is the hometown of former Chicago Bulls forward Toni Kukoc. When Maric flew into Chicago in 2012 – admiring all of the skyscrapers – it was the first time he had ever been to America.

“On my way over, I tried to picture how it would be in my head,” he said.

“It was a lot of emptiness leaving my family and friends and my hometown and my language.”

After averaging 10 points for the La Lumiere team that finished with a top five ranking in the country, Northern Illinois coach Mark Montgomery heard about the big man and

Maric became a Huskie. While getting accustomed to America – NIU guard Aaric Armstead laughs about when he found out Maric didn’t know what a sewer was – Maric has steadily improved in his three years with the Huskies.

This season, he’s averaging a team-high 12.1 points and and 8.5 rebounds in his third year with the Huskies. He’s recorded 14 double-doubles, which is third-most in the MAC, and brings energy to the team, regularly raising his hands to the crowd to encourage cheering.

“That’s great because some bigs don’t have any emotion,” Montgomery said. “ They just rebound and defend. I like when our guys – especially him – shows passion and energy.”

Armstead: Gauchos similar to Toledo

sports@daily-chronicle.com LAS VEGAS – Northern Illinois went 2-0 against Toledo in Mid-American Conference play this season.

That should boost the Huskies’ confidence when they open the inaugural Vegas 16 tournament today at the Mandalay Bay Events Center against UC-Santa Barbara, which NIU defensive specialist Aaric Armstead said reminds him most of Toledo.

“Because they have two main players that score most of their points, who are pretty much the powerhead of their offense,” said Armstead, who gets the lofty chore of defending Gauchos leader Michael Bryson.

Bryson and Gabe Vincent combined to average 32.3 points a game for Santa Barbara.

NIU ranked second in the MAC in allowing just 67.1 points a game, and will look to stymie a team that ranked fourth in the Big West with 71.5 pag., and was second in the league in hitting 36.7 percent from beyond the 3-point line.

“We’re not going to change our defense, we’re 95 percent man-to-man defense ... we’re going to make sure we chase them off the line and be there on the screens,” NIU coach Mark Montgomery said after Sunday’s prac-

tice. “We’re going to try to hedge out on these ball screens so they can’t just come off and shoot. But we’re going to play our regular defense. We’re going to sprint back in transition, we’re going to communicate and we’re going to play as a unit.”

Montgomery said he is looking forward to an up-tempo game, something that worked when beating Toledo, 71-66, in Ohio, and, 58-49, 10 days later at the Convocation Center.

Santa Barbara coach Bob Williams said he’s going to have to make adjustments based on how they play Bryson and Vincent – knowing how defensively sound the Huskies can be – and adapt when the MAC’s No. 2 team in steals begins filling gaps and taking Gauchos out of the offensive scheme.

“Defensively, they swarm you a little bit. They’re very physical and they do a really good job of defending hard without fouling,” Williams said. “It’ll be our ability to adjust to that and counter what they do.”

Although the Huskies finished ninth in the MAC in scoring offense, Williams said he was impressed with what he saw on film, admitting they shot the ball better than he thought when the matchup was first announced. Because the Huskies work well off ball screens, and feature Marin Maric in the paint,

Williams feels his streaky Gauchos have their work cut out for them if their shots aren’t falling.

“I think we match up relatively well; we don’t match up with the five cause he’s so big, but we match up well with the other positions on their team,” Williams said. “We have to make sure we’re prepared. They’re (also) a good rebounding team; they present a lot of different problems.”

Nevertheless, for NIU, containing Bryson and Vincent is the top priority, while being able to match offensive wits at the other end. Bryson has scored at least 13 points in 28 of the 30 games he’s played this season, while Vincent is averaging a little more than 15 points a contest over his past 10 games.

The Huskies have four players averaging double figures, led by Marin, who averages 12.1 points and 8.5 rebounds.

Travon Baker is scoring 11, Marshawn Wilson is averaging 10.9 and Armstead is adding 10.8.

“Our staple is defending and rebounding, (but) we’re very unselfish on offense,” Montgomery said. “When you have four players scoring in double figures ... I think the one nice thing on offense is we’re very, very unselfish and we can have different guys step up and have big nights.”

Montgomery and Maric both said they believe the big man will play.

It’s not the first time he has suffered a foot injury. During his first year, he broke his foot during practice six games into the season – causing him to redshirt the rest of the way.

But for the most part, life in America has been beneficial for both Maric and the Huskies.

The biggest thing that surprised him about life in the United States?

“You’ll never see people in Croatia go to class in pajamas,” he said. “That’s what shocked me.”

When asked if Maric now goes to class in more comfortable clothing, he shows a wide smile.

“Oh, yeah,” he said. “If nobody cares, what do I care?”

WHO TO WATCH Northern Illinois’ Aaric Armstead – While the Huskies have always been able to rely on their defensive stalwart, who was named to the MAC’s all-defensive squad, Armstead has proven he is much more than a defender. The junior’s offensive production has improved each year, and he rolls into the Vegas 16 after scoring in double figures in 12 of 18 conference games this season. Over his past 14 games, he’s hit 27 of 62 (43.5 percent) from 3-point range.

UC-Santa Barbara’s Gabe Vincent – While Bryson is the team’s leading scorer, Michael Vincent is the X-factor for the Gauchos.

With teams focusing their defensive effort on Bryson, the Gauchos turn to Vincent, the team’s second-leading scorer with 13.9 points a game. The sophomore guard connects on 38.6 percent from 3-point range, hitting 73 of 189 attempts.

INJURY UPDATE For Northern Illinois, Austin Pauga remains out after tearing ligaments in his right ankle.

The 6-foot-6 freshman guard missed the team’s past four games. ... The Gauchos will miss the services of John Green, who re-aggravated a knee injury during the Big West tournament against Hawaii. Alex Hart injured his left knee during practice last week, and is doubtful for today. Also out is Justin Burks, a limited reserve player who is rehabilitating his shoulder after having surgery.

ROOM SERVICE Northern Illinois was 3-11 (0-1 neutral) on the road this season. Santa Barbara, meanwhile, thrived away from home, posting a 10-6 mark in true road game while going 2-2 on neutral courts.

“I just had to trust my defense and knew they’d do the work for me,” Newport said.

The Barbs got on the board in a big way in the bottom of the second, scoring eight times on two hits, benefiting from three Titans errors and four walks. Morgan Newport hit a bases-loaded triple after the Titans walked four out of five batters.

The Barbs scored six more runs in the bottom of the fourth on just three hits to push the lead to 14-2. Boylan committed another three errors in

the inning and hit a batter, plus threw its second and third run-scoring wild pitches of the game. Morgan Newport, Erin Karasweski and Torrie Newport each had RBIs in the inning – each one on grounders to shortstop that became errors, but would have scored runs anyway.

“I thought we hit the ball well,” Davis said. “I think we have a lot of work left to do on the defensive side, but it’s nice to get the nerves out of the way. I think the first couple games, there’s a lot of nerves, and we’re going to make mistakes throwing the ball and swing-

ing at pitches over our heads, but we’ll settle down and get better as the year goes on.”

Boylan allowed just two earned runs. DeKalb added their 13th and final unearned of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Warner hit a grounder to short that was thrown away, allowing Morgan Newport to score after she led off the inning with her second triple of the game.

The Barbs had just six hits.

“They came at good times, say if they walked a few kids then we got the big hit after that,” Davis said. “It was a good lesson on both ends – you can’t walk kids, and we capitalized on their mistakes.”

The Barbs are back in action at 11 a.m. Monday when they host Geneva.

Morgan Newport is likely to be back in the circle after throwing a no-hitter in the Barbs’ 12-0 season-opening win Tuesday against Elgin.

“I hate to say it will be our first real test, but we’ll definitely understand what we need to work on after Monday,” Davis said.

Sycamore blanks Elgin in doubleheader sweep

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Sycamore baseball coach Jason Cavanaugh said his team is still looking for an identity.

But that didn’t stop the Spartans from taking both games of a doubleheader against Elgin to stay undefeated, winning Game 1, 6-0, and Game 2, 7-0.

Cavanaugh used 10 different pitchers in the two games Saturday afternoon. That level of rotation stems from there being a lack of returning players from 2015.

“I think we have to find out what

we have,” Cavanaugh said. “There’s really no returning varsity pitchers here this year. Jack Mizgalski and Aidan Hickey both threw maybe 10 innings last year, but beyond that there’s really nobody. That’s part of graduating all of your seniors. When they leave, they take all the innings with them. We want to get guys in the game to face game situations as frequently as we can before our conference schedule starts.”

Sycamore’s (3-0) pitchers took care of business when their number was called against an Elgin (0-4) team that struggled to find success at the plate. The Maroons were blanked in

both games and were held to five hits on the day, with one coming in the second game. The Spartans struck out 12 batters in Game 1, with four strikeouts coming from James Marcinkowski.

Cavanaugh was impressed by what he saw from his pitchers against a struggling visiting team.

“I think pitching could be our strong suit this season,” Cavanaugh said. “There’s still a lot to be seen and we’re going to get tested. We’ll see what happens when some of these young guys get tested in tough situations, like when guys are on second and third with nobody out against a

good-hitting team.”

In both games, the Spartans produced small spurts of offense that ultimately was too much for the Maroons to overcome.

Sycamore’s biggest inning came in the fifth inning of the first game, when five consecutive batters reached base, which scored three runs. One of those runs was produced by center fielder Jordan Wright, who went 3 for 4 with one RBI and also scoring twice.

The Spartans were led offensively

by Tyler Didio in Game 2. He went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and reached base for a third time on a walk.

DeKALB – Torrie Newport finished strong after allowing three hits in the first inning Saturday, pitching three perfect innings for the DeKalb softball team in a 15-5 five-inning victory over Boylan.

In the home opener for the Barbs (2-0), Newport struck out five in four innings, allowing three hits. The Titans put two on the board in the first with a single by Emily Heithkamp, but Newport retired the final 10 batters she faced. Freshman Mallory Warner pitched the fifth, allowing three runs – two earned – on two hits and two walks.

“I think that first inning was a little nerves,” DeKalb coach Jeff Davis said of Newport’s struggles in the first frame. “Being a sophomore, pitching at the varsity level, being the first home game – I think that was nerves in the first inning, but she settled down great, got us through three more innings and we had an opportunity to get another young girl out there and get her some work.”

Spartans split DH at McHenry

sports@daily-chronicle.com The Sycamore softball team split a doubleheader Saturday at McHenry, winning the second game 4-3 after losing the opener 8-1.

Madison Parks picked up her first varsity win in the late game. She gave up one earned run on seven hits while striking out three and allowing one walk.

Addison Foulk went 2 for 3 in the nightcap. Kayley Aase was 1 for 3, and Nati Morey went 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs. In the first game, Izzy Odom gave up three earned runs in five innings for the Spartans (2-3), while Anna Criswell went 2 for 3.

Aase added an RBI, and Foulk and Madison Parks each finished 1 for 3.

GIRLS SOCCER Sycamore tops Hononegah: The

Spartans beat Hononegah, 2-0.

Ella Holland and Saydie Holland scored goals in the shutout victory. With the win, Sycamore improved to 4-1 on the year.

BASEBALL H-BR drops opener: The Royals lost

Taylor Ruh took the loss, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in 21/3 innings, plus had one of the two hits for the Royals (0-1). He also went 1 for 2 at the plate.

Kota Sleeth did not have an official at-bat, but walked twice and scored a run. Tristian Sanderson had an RBI. “First game of the season is always a hard one,” coach Brandon Jackson said. “Today nothing seemed to go right for us as we committed 11 errors, and only were able to produce two hits. Taylor Ruh didn’t throw a bad game, just left some pitches over the plate and wasn’t getting any support.

“This was first time we actually played on a field this season and I think we will bounce back from today having Jacob Morsch back (vacation) and getting some of these younger players more experience.”

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Travis Ishikawa, a postseason hero for the Giants during their last World Series run, drove in five runs and finished a single short of the cycle to help the White Sox beat San Francisco, 13-9, on Sunday.

Ishikawa sent the Giants to the World Series in 2014 with a three-run walk-off homer in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series, and he drew cheers from San Francisco fans Sunday.

Blackhawks beat skidding Canucks to clinch playoff spot

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Andrew Ladd scored the go-ahead goal with 2:27 left in the third period and the Blackhawks clinched their eighth straight playoff berth with a 3-2 victory Sunday over the skidding Vancouver Canucks.

Jonathan Toews stickhandled into the Canucks zone before dropping a pass in the high slot to Ladd, who fired in a one-timer for his 23rd goal this season and sixth in 13 games with the Hawks.

Hot flashes can be treated Dear Dr. K: I’m afraid to take hormone therapy for my menopausal hot flashes. Are there any natural remedies that work?

Dear Reader: Natural remedies can help for hot flashes, but hormone therapy is helpful more often. For that reason, I’ll come back to the pluses and minuses of hormone therapy after answering your question.

Obviously, you know what hot flashes are like. However, for any readers who may not, here’s a description. Hot flashes are brief but intensely uncomfortable feelings of warmth followed by drenching perspiration. They’re common during menopause, but not all women get them.

Hot flashes can be accompanied by heart palpitations, dizziness or weakness. They can cause sleepless nights, followed by irritability and exhaustion during the day. At their worst, they really can interfere with a woman’s life.

There are traditional medicines other than hormone therapy that can help with hot flashes. Several drugs that usually are used to treat depression give relief of symptoms for some women. These drugs include paroxetine (approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat menopausal symptoms), venlafaxine, desvenlafaxine, citalopram and escitalopram.

The fact these drugs can be helpful does not mean hot flashes are a sign of depression. Instead, the drugs likely alter the brain chemistry that generates hot flashes.

Three other traditional medicines that also affect the chemistry of the brain can give symptom relief. These include gabapentin, pregabalin and clonidine.

Several non-medicinal treatments (such as isoflavones, phytoestrogens and black cohosh) may help, although different studies have come to different conclusions. The same is true for acupuncture and hypnosis.

flashes less severe or less frequent that don’t require either traditional medicines or “natural remedies”: • Drink a glass of cool water at the beginning of a hot flash.

• Drink six to eight glasses of water a day.

• Plunge your hands in cold water and pat them on your face, neck and chest when a hot flash starts.

• Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which make hot flashes more uncomfortable.

• Cut down on red wine, chocolate and aged cheeses. They contain a chemical that can trigger hot flashes.

• Don’t smoke. Smoking can make hot flashes worse.

• Wear loose, comfortable cotton clothing.

• Dress in layers so you easily can remove some clothing if you suddenly feel hot.

• At night, use lightweight blankets that can be removed.

Let’s come back to hormone therapy.

Here’s the bottom line – at least for me – of a complicated story. The most effective medication for hot flashes is the hormone estrogen. If you are entering menopause – which typically occurs in a woman’s late 40s or early 50s – consider hormone therapy.

The exceptions: Avoid hormone therapy if you have (or are at high risk for) heart disease, stroke, breast cancer, liver disease or blood clots in the legs.

met a man eight years ago who has become everything to me. We see each other weekly and discuss life, work, home and more. We both are married to other people.

Our relationship is not only emotional but also physical. We are secretive about our relationship only with our children – we appear in public together, and my spouse knows about it. Many people at our regular venues comment on how much in love we seem to be.

A few of my friends are privy to our relationship and wonder when we’re leaving our spouses to be together.

Last week, we looked at auctions after one of a major was raised to two of that major. Mentioning a new suit now said that the bidder was too strong to pass, not strong enough to jump to game, and particularly wanted partner to look at his holdings in the bidder’s two named suits. This is called a help-suit game-try. It is a game-try because the partnership can still stop short of game.

But what happens when, say, one spade is raised to three spades, as in today’s deal? What do the opener’s rebids mean now?

There are three choices. If he has a minimum opening, he will pass. Most of the time, he will raise to game. Anything else suggests a slam. What would bidding a new suit promise?

There is a case for making this a help-suit bid also, but that is not the standard agreement. More traditional is that the bid shows a firstround control (ace or void) in the suit named and denies a first-round control in any suit skipped.

Why make one of these control-bids?

Usually because the opener has the values for a slam but holds two immediate losers in an unbid side suit -- here, in hearts.

So, South control-bids four clubs.

Then North does likewise with four hearts. This being music to South’s ears, he now uses some form of Blackwood before jumping to six spades.

What happens after West leads the diamond jack: queen, king, ace?

South must delay drawing trumps until he has cashed his three club winners and discarded dummy’s diamond loser. Then he leads a high spade from hand and claims when they break 1-1.
