Not much to like about ‘new normal’ POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS

Generally speaking, I’m not a fan of the “new normal.”

The phrase almost always denotes something bad that we’re collectively just supposed to accept because the forces behind it seem too overwhelming to counteract.

We can’t come up with a good way to balance security and humanitarian concerns, so we’re just supposed to accept that periodic, mass-casualty attacks on European capitals are inevitable. It’s “Europe’s new normal.”

It seems as if years ago we collectively accepted the “new normal” of mass shootings in our country.

Another great new normal is that to board an airplane, you have to consent be treated like a crime suspect, despite these enhanced security measures being much more effective at creating long lines at airports than actually keeping weapons off planes. A federal field test found the TSA failed in 67 out of 70 cases to detect weapons or explosives last summer.

But too bad if you don’t like it. The federal government’s in charge now, so take off your shoes. It’s the new normal.

We’re supposed to think it’s OK that ticket brokers can buy up all the tickets to events people want to see – sometimes in collaboration with the people holding the events – and then

A U.S. service member and his family are among those wounded in the attacks Tuesday in Brussels, and the Pentagon is still working to account for other members of the military who may have been nearby, U.S. officials said.

Officials with U.S. European Command said in a statement that the organization continues to closely monitor events in Brussels, and is working with other U.S. agencies and Belgian authorities to determine appropriate security measures to take. Want politicians to do things that we used to take for granted that they would, such as pass a budget or vote on a Supreme Court nominee?

It turns out they don’t have to do those things anymore.

The political parties have rigged the drawing of legislative districts so we won’t vote them out of office no matter how badly they fall down on the job.

This year, we seem on track to go at least a year without a state budget, and none of the state legislative officeholders face any whiff of a challenge from within their Republican Party or from the Democrats.

Don’t like it? Too bad. It’s the new normal.

Big Read author Julia Alvarez talks diversity and literacy

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Award-winning author Julia Alvarez didn’t think twice about books until she read one with characters who looked like her.

Alvarez spoke before a crowded audience Tuesday at the DeKalb Public Library, as part of its Big Read endowment program. DeKalb’s is one of three libraries in the nation to receive the Big Read grant for nine consecutive years, programming and public relations manager Edith Craig said.

“It’s a true community read in the sense that it helps promote literacy in our community,” Craig said.

With a colorful butterfly broach pinned close to her heart, Alvarez took the stage Tuesday to talk about this year’s Big Read book, “In the Time of the Butterflies,” and the importance of diversity in literature.

Alvarez’s career as a novelist and storyteller began at a ripe age, with a book that forever changed her opinion on reading: “Arabian Nights.”

“I read it and reread it, pouring over the beautiful pictures,” Alvarez said. “Instead of a white princess with blue eyes and yellow hair – the usual fare – the cover showed a brown girl, with black hair sitting before a man in a turban, her hand in the air. In other words, unlike the fairytale princesses, for once the cover promised a story about a girl who looked Dominican.”

“In the Time of the Butterflies” is a historical fiction account of Minerva, Patria, María Teresa, and Dedé Mirabal – Las Mariposas – who were in the forefront of a political opposition against Gen. Rafael Lenidas Trujillo’s dictatorship of the Dominican Republic in 1960.

Alvarez’s education truly began after returning home from school, back to her colorful, complex and diverse extended family, she said. Stories, she quickly learned, could be liberating, and were a commodity her Dominican family had in spades. Experiencing prejudice herself as a young Dominican girl in an American school, Alvarez found solace in stories.

“I found what we had come looking for in the United States of America between the covers of books – the grand democracy of the world of the united nation, where everyone was welcome,” she said.

“The message to me was that although the underlying truth of everything I was reading was ‘I am a human being; nothing human is alien to me,’ still there were big gaps on that shelf of American literature,” Alvarez said.

But today, Alvarez’s experience and those of her characters have helped to instill courage in new and seasoned readers alike.

“When she talked about the role of people, and that we don’t always have to be activists or at the forefront, and that courage can come by accident – I think that was really powerful for me,” Big Read participant Juan Molina Hernandez said.

More than 2,000 copies of “In the Time of Butterflies” and 5,000 copies of Alvarez’s young adult adaptation of the story, “Before We Were Free,” were distributed for the program, and the author’s message of diversity Tuesday was not lost upon a local Dominican mother, Elizabeth Grada.

“Kids can learn that everybody can work together independent of their skin color or language,” Grada said.

“We are human beings. We are not different. We just learn different things, but we are the same.”

Local sellers, park districts prep for Easter

DeKALB – Betsy Hendrey has molded hundreds of personalized chocolate bunnies in the past week for children in DeKalb County.

Hendrey, who owns The Confectionary candy shops in Sycamore and DeKalb, said she has definitely seen more customers come through her doors looking for Easter goods this year.

“We’ve been doing more advertising, so the word of mouth is really good,” she said. “We put names on the bunnies, so the kids can get a bunny with their name on it, and I think that’s what draws people here.”

Easter spending is up this year and local vendors said they notice the difference.

The National Retail Federation predicts national spending on Easter merchandise such as decorations, candy, flowers, gifts and clothes will reach $17.3 billion this year, or about $146 a person, which is the highest spending has been in 13 years, according to a recent survey.

A few hundred personalized bunnies have hopped out the doors of The Confectionary so far, and this week should be the peak selling time, she added.

“Easter is different than the others, because with holidays like Christmas and Valentine’s Day, people get the assorted boxes,” she said. “We have one or two days around Valentine’s Day that are very busy, but with Easter we have about a whole week.”

Sycamore Park District is one of the first to kick off Easter events with Thursday’s Family Flashlight Egg Hunt, where families can search in the dark for Easter eggs.

Lisa Metcalf, recreation supervisor with the park district, said that she hopes for a big turnout this year, as long as the weather holds.

The Flashlight Egg Hunt will be at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Good Tymes Shelter in the Sycamore Sports Complex. The event is free and open to all ages. Registration isn’t required, but bring your own bag and flashlight.

The DeKalb Park District will offer something new this year as well, through a partnership with the Chamber of Commerce and Feed’em Soup, which will cater Breakfast with the Bunny at Hopkins Park.

The nonprofit has faced the possibility of closure because of budget deficits recently. The park district and Feed’em Soup will split the proceeds 50-50.

“We’ve worked with them before,” interim Executive Director Amy Doll said. “We wanted to see if the partnership could expand, so we figured we could do it in part as a fundraiser for them.”

“We’re actually taking proactive measures to move things forward.”

DeKALB – Northern Illinois University officials met Tuesday with faith leaders from a Chicago civil rights organization about race relations on campus and in the the surrounding community.

Bishop James Dukes, president of the Southside Chicago chapter of the National Action Network and pastor of a church there, said he and the Rev. Ed Peecher came here to talk and hash out some concerns they have, ahead of of launching a full-on demonstration.

“We’re here in a spirit of collaboration, in a spirit of us all working together, before we get to a place where there might possibly begin any civil disobedience or any boycotts,” Dukes said before attending the private meeting.

Dukes was dispatched to DeKalb after an NIU employee contacted the NAN national office in New York. The organization, founded by the Rev. Al Sharpton, is known for speaking out on what

it considers racial and other injustice.

Dukes said the Chicago chapter covers DeKalb.

In 2013, James Cole, who worked at that time as a foreman in NIU’s building services department, filed a civil rights lawsuit against the university. The suit alleged racial discrimination and freedom of speech infringement, among other allegations. Cole also said a noose was placed in his work drawer.

“We’re asking NIU to at least disavow ... itself from this symbol of death and racism in America,” Dukes said.

Officials said a statement issued Tuesday about the lawsuit reiterates the university’s intolerance for the kinds of actions Cole said he experienced.

Cole’s case was first filed with the U.S. Equal Empolyment Opportunity Commission, which ruled against Cole.

Then he filed the lawsuit, which was dismissed in May 2015. He has appealed.

Home sales jump 32.7 percent in DeKalb County

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Home sales in DeKalb County increased 32.7 percent last month after plunging in January while prices fell and the number of homes on the market declined.

Sales of existing homes in DeKalb County jumped 32.7 percent last month to 69, up from 52 in February 2015, according to figures released Monday by the Illinois Association of Realtors. In January, sales had fallen 30 percent.

Through February, 133 sales have closed, a 3.3 percent decline from 122 sales during the first two months of 2015.

“Illinois continues to see sustained growth in sales and median prices, indicating the market is poised for a strong rollout for the spring selling season,” said Mike Drews, president of the Illinois Association of Realtors. “All signs point to sellers seeing intense interest from buyers who are competing in a market where there are fewer properties from which to choose.”

The median sales price in the county was $140,000 in February, down 3.4 percent from $144,950 in February 2015.

the median sales price in the county increased 6.1 percent to $148,500, up from $140,000 for January and February 2015.

Fewer homes were on the market last month, as the inventory of homes for sale declined 21.6 percent to 344.

That’s compared with 439 homes for sale in February 2015. Homes on the market sold at a quicker pace. The number of days on market until sale fell 21.2 percent to 82 days, down from 104 days in February 2015.

Statewide, home sales in February totaled 8,528, up 5.7 percent from 8,066 in February 2015, IAR reported. The statewide median price last month was $160,000, a 7.8 percent increase from February 2015, when it was $148,375.

Nationally, Americans retreated from home-buying in February, reversing months of previous gains as low inventories push up prices to levels that restrict sales.

The National Association of Realtors said Monday that sales of existing homes fell 7.1 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.08 million. The decline follows robust yearly sales rates of 5.47 million in January and 5.45 million in December, after a new regulation had delayed closings in November.

The housing market enters the traditional spring buying season facing a quandary: There are relatively few properties listed for sale, even as steady job gains and low mortgage rates have bolstered demand from

would-be buyers. The limited supplies have fueled rising prices that have, in turn, reduced affordability and limited sales levels.

These cost pressures were further enhanced by a volatile stock market that hit down payment savings.

“We assume the plunge in the stock market in the first six weeks of this year persuaded some potential homebuyers to reconsider, at least temporarily,” said Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics.

Shepherdson noted that sales momentum “stalled” in February, but sales volumes might pick-up in the spring.

The median home sales price was $210,800 in February, a 4.4 percent annual increase from a year ago.

Tight supplies have driven the increases in home prices, forcing buyers to bid more for hotly contested homes.

Listings in February fell 1.1 percent from a year ago. Many homeowners are hesitant to sell, since they would need more equity to cover the down payment for stepping up to a new property. Investors have also turned homes into rentals, further depriving the market of supplies.

Mr. Peanut is a trademark for Planters Peanuts that has been in use for 100 years. Amedeo Obici and Mario Peruzzi (who later became his brother-in law) started the Planters Nut and Chocolate Co. in 1906 in Pennsylvania. They made Burgomaster Brand Salted Peanuts sold in bags, a new idea.

Soon the nuts also were sold in tin cans and glass jars. The company recognized the need for advertising and branding. In 1916, it ran a contest for a trademark and Anthony Gentile, a 10-yearold boy, won with the sketch of a smiling peanut with arms and legs. It was later improved by an artist, and from 1913 to 1961, Mr. Peanut was dressed with a top hat, white spats, black arms and legs, gloves, shoes, an ebony cane and a monocle. For a few years during World War II, he carried a gun and looked like a soldier in a hard helmet. The company still uses Mr. Peanut as a mascot, giveaway and advertising symbol. Figurines, tall drug store scales shaped like Mr. Peanut, costumes, books, dishes, glass jars, toys, charms, puzzles, textiles, salt and pepper shakers, silverware, even a sleeping bag, and games were made. Today there is a club called Peanut Pals.

Mr. Peanut finally changed his clothes in a 2010 update. He now is seen in ads and commercials with an added white shirt, gloves, a black tie, vest, and black legs

or pants. One of the biggest Mr. Peanuts collectibles is a 1940s costume. The wearer’s legs and arms poke out the sides of the composition peanut body that fits on the person’s body. The person inside has to wear black sleeves, tights, shoes and socks that will show. Mr. Peanut’s body has holes for eyes, a nose, mouth and ears to let the person breath and talk. The head and top hat are taller than the body, making an almost six-foot figure. *** Q: A friend has 10 Hans Wegner dining room chairs, eight side chairs and two armchairs. They were bought in Denmark in the early 1960s. They are wood with leather seats and backs. There is some cracking of the leather.

A: Hans Wegner (1914-2007) was a Danish furniture designer best known for his innovative chair designs. He designed over 500 different chairs, as well as hundreds of beds, desks, tables and lighting. Leather should be dusted regularly and can be cleaned with a special leather cleaner or by wiping with a damp cloth and soapy water. If the chair is unusable in its present condition, your friend should have a professional replace the leather. As long as a professional restoration is done using real leather, it will not lower the value

IceHogs player faces Ease Into Spring at the ‘revenge porn’ charges

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A Chicago Blackhawks prospect faces felony “revenge porn” charges after police said he distributed a private, sexual video of a Sycamore woman.

Garret E. Ross, 23, of the 6500 block of Springbrook Road, Rockford, is accused of using an explicit video of the woman to get revenge on her because he blamed her for his girlfriend breaking up with him.

Garret E. Ross now faces Ross charges of nonconsensual dissemination of a private sexual video, a crime punishable by one to three years in prison.

Ross is a left-winger in his third season with the Rockford IceHogs, an affiliate of the Blackhawks.

The woman contacted Sycamore police in September because she was concerned about a private video she made in January being sent to other men. The victim told authorities the video was meant only for a man she was dating at the time, another IceHogs player who has not been charged, court records show.

Temporary TransVAC closure planned

SYCAMORE – TransVAC dispatch will temporarily be closed from 6 to 11 a.m. today for scheduled major mechanical work at the transportation facility.

“This work will cause us to shut down our TransVAC dispatch center during this timeframe,” the nonprofit said in a news release.

TransVAC dispatch will be taking calls again at 11 a.m., if work allows, the release said.

Trips that have already been scheduled for today will not be affected.

However, TransVAC will not be able to schedule trip reservations during the shutdown.

The victim told police Ross was angry with her and suspected she told his then-girlfriend he was using a dating app to cheat on her, court records show. Ross sent the pornographic video Aug. 31 from his phone to the woman, who then feared it had been sent to other men without her permission.

Former Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signed a measure in December 2014 making the nonconsensual distribution of private sexual images a felony.

Ross’ attorney, John Palmer, was not immediately available to comment and Sycamore police Cmdr. Michael Anderson and DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack declined to comment on whether the video had been sent to other men or whether more charges would be filed.

Ross’ teammate has not been charged because police were not able to find the video on his phone, Anderson said.

“We would have to get a copy of that media, not just the record,” he said.

Ross has been out on bond since posting $500 bail of the $5,000 bond set on the warrant for his arrest.

DeKalb County Judge Philip Montgomery agreed to allow Ross to travel outside the United States and Canada to compete with the team, records show.

He is due back in court Monday.

SYCAMORE – The man who previously served as the top criminal prosecutor at the DeKalb County State’s Attorney Office was let go earlier this year for “business reasons.”

DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack hand-picked Duke Harris to join his team of prosecutors after taking office in December 2012.

Harris left his position Jan. 22 “for the business reasons discussed,” according to a four-page settlement agreement and general release contract obtained by the Daily Chronicle through a Freedom of Information Act request.

The contract doesn’t give any indication as to what the reasons were, and Schmack declined to comment on the personnel matter.

Harris didn’t submit a letter of resignation. Jessica Finley, another

former prosecutor with Schmack’s office, did submit such a letter when she left the office earlier this year, according to records obtained by the Daily Chronicle.

Harris, a lead prosecutor in Champaign County since 1998, joined Schmack in 2012 after Schmack was elected to the post.

Harris was a felony prosecutor in the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office from 1986 to 1996 before failing to receive the Republican nomination for state’s attorney in 1996.

Terms of the settlement called for Harris to receive two weeks’ pay ($4,078.40) and agree not to sue, among other terms.

A phone number for Harris couldn’t immediately be found.

On election night, Harris appeared at a campaign event with Charles Rea, a Republican candidate for state’s attorney.

Illinois, union head to court over layoffs The ASSOCIATED PRESS

SPRINGFIELD – The state and the nation’s largest union of public employees will head to court over an arbitrator’s decision that Gov. Bruce Rauner was within his rights to order the layoffs of more than 150 state workers last year.

The state has gone to court in Sangamon County to uphold the ruling, the State Journal-Register reported.

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees plans to file a counter-claim asking the court to vacate the ruling.

The dispute is the result of an arbitrator’s ruling issued in response to a grievance filed by the union, which represents 109 of the affected workers, alleging that the Rauner administration acted improperly or violated contract language governing layoffs.

The administration argues that the layoffs were necessary to save money amid the lack of a state budget or were part of agency reorganizations.

Duckworth suit’s April trial postponed; May hearing set

JONESBORO – Court officials in southern Illinois said a civil lawsuit against U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth stemming from when she led Illinois’ veterans agency won’t go forward next month.

Union County Circuit Clerk’s Office officials said a May 12 hearing for summary judgment in the case was set during a hearing on Tuesday. The case was to go to trial April 4.

Two employees of a southern Illinois veteran’s home filed the lawsuit in 2008 alleging workplace retaliation. The Illinois Attorney General’s Office is handling Duckworth’s defense and has previously asked for the lawsuit to be dismissed.

Duckworth last week won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate and will face Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk in the November general election.

CHICAGO – The sister of a 24-year-old who died in Chicago police custody appealed directly to Mayor Rahm Emanuel to let the family view squad-car video of the 2015 incident.

Court rejects prosecutor’s appeal to allow late voting

QUINCY – An Illinois appellate court has denied a request by the Adams County state’s attorney to vacate a stay issued last week barring voters turned away on Election Day from casting ballots this week.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reported State’s Attorney Jon Barnard filed the request Monday with the 4th District Appellate Court. The appeals court stopped plans for late voting at the request of Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

Officials in Adams County – along with several other Illinois jurisdictions – ran out of ballots during last Tuesday’s primary and voters were turned away.

Madigan argued the state constitution doesn’t allow for late voting. Barnard said it’s a matter of fairness.

Barnard said he will not pursue the case further because of the March 29 deadline to certify election results.

Remains of missing woman identified in Missouri

EDWARDSVILLE – A woman’s dismembered body that was found at an Interstate 70 rest stop nearly 12 years ago in eastern Missouri has been identified, police in Illinois and Missouri said Tuesday.

The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis identified the victim as Deanna Denise Howland of Alton, Illinois. She was also known as Deanna Denise Barker, Deanna Denise Kinnear and Deanna

A highway maintenance worker who was trimming trees found Howland’s headless torso on June 28, 2004, in a picnic area at the rest stop near Wright City, Missouri, about 45 miles west of St. Louis. Police believe the body was dumped at the rest area after Howland was killed elsewhere.

Major Jeff Connor of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said that Howland, who had worked as a prostitute, was estranged from her family and only recently was reported missing.

DNA samples provided by members of Howland’s family helped identify her remains, which had appendectomy and cesarean section scars.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about Howland’s death to contact the sheriff’s departments in Warren County or Madison County, Illinois.

Crews uncover hidden murals on building

PEORIA HEIGHTS – Two murals painted on the exterior of a historic building in Peoria Heights were uncovered as crews razed another structure to make way for a parking lot.

Last week, crews were working on a $4 million project to relocate Trefzger’s Bakery when they discovered paintings of a Duryea automobile and women dancing in red dresses on the 121-year-old Hobart building. It’s unclear whether the paintings have historic significance, so developer Katie Kim hopes someone will come forward with information about the artwork, she told the (Peoria) Journal Star.

“We had no idea they were there,” Kim said. “We saw the paintings and we were like, ‘What? Who? Why?’ ”

In its claim of responsibility, the Islamic State group said its members detonated suicide

College officials are wrong when they seek to keep secrets cy.

Public employees’ salaries are public information. When new employees are hired, their names and salaries become public. When they are released, their names and the terms of their separation are also public.

Kishwaukee College collected almost $10 million from local property taxpayers in 2015. Local taxpayers foot the bill for much of what goes on at the college. As such, taxpayers have a right to know how it is managing its finances, including who it hires and fires, and under what terms.

That didn’t sit well with college officials this month.

After the college’s board of trustees voted to lay off more than 20 people on March 8, school officials declined to provide a reporter with a list of names or positions held by the people who were losing their jobs. Two people were named, but only because they had already resigned.

This required the Daily Chronicle to submit a Freedom of Information Act request for the information. The college’s staff took the maximum amount of time allowable by law – five working days – to produce data that must have been presented to board members before their vote.

In the interim, college officials urged the newspaper to “respect the privacy” of the people it had laid off. President Laurie Borowicz also wrote a memo to all college employees, including the information provided to the newspaper.

“Unfortunately as a public institution, the information requested is subject to FOIA and we are obligated to fulfill the request,” Borowicz wrote. “Those impacted by the reduction in force have been notified of the newspaper’s request.”

What’s truly unfortunate is that the leader of a public institution that benefits from millions in public tax collections finds it acceptable to hide public information and fight to keep it secret. Or that she would like to create among other public employees an expectation of privacy where one simply does not exist.

The same week that the college laid off staff, Sycamore School District 427 did the same, laying off 18 employees, most of them teachers.

The school district, however, posted documents on its website that gave the names of the people who would be affected by the reduction in force.

Those let go at the school district were teachers with whom students interact regularly, making it more relevant who they were. After examining the data, the newspaper decided independently that the employees released by the college were not well-known and that position and salary information was sufficient for reporting.

This information in any case is important for the public to know and examine independently. It provides context for how public money is being spent, whose positions are being eliminated, and how much is being saved in salary cost.

If college officials would like to keep secret details about whom they hire and fire and how much those people earn, they can do that.

All they have to do is stop accepting millions of dollars from state and local taxpayers and pay property tax on their land holdings, as private businesses do.

Until that happens, however, the college is a public institution that must be accountable to the public, even when its leaders do not find that comfortable or convenient.

Last year, Jane tried to have her record expunged. Judge John Gleeson denied the request a few days ago, explaining that Jane doesn’t meet the legal standard. But Gleeson – the same judge who sent her to prison – then did something extraordinary. He appended to his 32-page opinion a “federal certificate of rehabilitation.”

Understand: There is no such thing. The official-looking document carries no legal force. It’s just something Gleeson had made for Jane so she can show prospective employers that a federal judge considers her rehabilitated. He said a woman who was convicted once, a long time ago,

of a nonviolent crime from which she saw no profit and for which she has served her time, ought not be punished for it the rest of her life.

“I had no intention,” wrote Gleeson, “to sentence her to the unending hardship she has endured in the job market.”

If you consider this a heartwarming story, you miss the point.

Yes, Gleeson did a good and generous thing. One hopes it has the desired effect. But it is unconscionable that Jane Doe’s situation ever reached this extreme.

The shift of American penal philosophy from rehabilitation to punishment has had many disastrous effects: prison overcrowding, mass disenfranchisement, fatherless homes. But the most self-defeating effect is embodied in denying ex-felons employment once they’ve served their time. If you deny them the ability to do lawful work, what obvious option is left?

Granted, there are sometimes good reasons to deny a given ex-felon a given job; no day care should hire a newly released child molester, for example. But what Jane Doe is facing is

rooted less in common-sense caution than in a new American ethos where punishment never ends.

That should be anathema to a nation of second chances. Lawmakers must enact reforms that curb the power of employers to discriminate against former felons – or that incentivize their hiring. Questions about criminal records should not be allowed on job applications; a person should have the chance to make a good impression at the job interview without being automatically ruled out for doing some stupid thing a long time ago.

Jane Doe was lucky to have Gleeson on her side, but she shouldn’t have needed him. She did something stupid, yes, but she was duly punished for it.

Except that in America these days, you can never be punished enough.

Illinois has no money for new plan for state fair $180 million – what’s a governor to do?

The governor wants a state fair.

OK, let’s make that two fairs. Makes sense – we don’t have a budget, have no funding for higher education, billions in unpaid bills and a $111 billion unfunded pension liability.

But the show must go on.

And, while we’re at it – let’s pour another $180 million into the Springfield and Du Quoin fairgrounds to bring them up to snuff. A sprinkler system for the horse barn? Sure, in another time and in another reality.

Grandstand repairs, roof replacements and a fire-alarm system for the fairgrounds in Du Quoin? Definitely, if we were flush with cash and

had reason to believe that “our state fair’s the best state fair.”

We don’t. In 2008 the failure of an electrical system forced the Springfield fairgrounds to be closed for more than two months. Vendors from last year’s Springfield version of the fair haven’t been paid – to the tune of $1.5 million. Vendors from the Du Quoin edition haven’t been paid either. So much for the economic boon these events are supposed to provide.

When it comes to harness racing, butter cows, cotton candy and funnel cakes, the governor develops this weird version of financial amnesia.

According to Gov. Rauner, business as usual is bad – except when it

comes to the fairs. According to the governor, passing funding measures for higher education is irresponsible because “we just don’t have the money.” But repairing and replacing the duct work at the fairgrounds in Du Quoin? No problem. Let’s get it done.

The state fair link at illinois.gov proudly announces this morning that there are only 143 days until the Aug. 11 debut of the 2016 state fair in Springfield. That site has a functional “Vendors Wanted” button that includes the following instruction: “DO NOT send a deposit with your application. This is only an application; it does not guarantee a space will be offered. If a contract is awarded, payment and Certificate of

Insurance will be due by designated deadline prior to the Fair.”

Get that? If you want to sell stuff at the fair, you have to pay the state up front. But if the state and their fairs want to do business with you?

Just add it to their $1.5 million tab.

We don’t think so.

As Democrats and Republicans are both good at saying in reference to things they don’t like: It’s time to make some hard decisions. Let’s start with these: Scrap the $180 million fair infrastructure plan – for now.

Scrap the 2016 version of the state fairs – both of them. And do it now.

We will call her Jane Doe. We really have no choice, given that that’s the only identification found in the court document. Jane is 57, a Jamaica-born permanent U.S. resident living in New York City.

She is a licensed nurse and a mother.

She is also a convicted felon.

In 2000, Jane, trying to raise two young daughters on $15,000 a year and an $80 weekly child-support check, was recruited by her then-boyfriend for an insurance scam. They staged a car accident and tried to collect on a claim.

It didn’t work. Jane was convicted on fraud charges and sentenced to 15 months in prison. She was released in 2004.

That’s when her ordeal began.

Her debt to society paid, Jane set out looking for work. She was rehired by a former employer and worked there two years. Then the state Office of Professional Discipline suspended her license for two years for professional misconduct – not because she had done anything wrong, but because of the old conviction.

In the years since, Jane has found

DeKALB – Northern Illinois quarterback Drew Hare spent the first practice of spring football the same way he did the end of last season.

He was on the sidelines in street clothes.

The Huskies opened up the 2016 spring season on Tuesday morning with a helmets-only practice at Huskie Stadium with their starting quarterback still recovering from a ruptured Achilles he suffered against Toledo in November.

“We’re going to take it slow,” Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey said of Hare’s progression. “We probably originally thought he’d be closer to 100 percent than he is, but as you go through it, as with any recovery, you take some twists and turns. As we progressed, we thought he’d be right about here.

“He’s doing a lot of functional things, but he’s not ready today. I think in three weeks, that could be a lot different. He could be out there and doing some things. Each week, the gains he makes determines what he’ll be doing the following week.”

Carey said at National Signing Day on Feb. 3 that the Huskies pushed back the spring season so they could have a chance to have Hare participate – as well as the other quarterbacks who were nursing medical issues. He said on Tuesday that Hare’s availability for the Huskie Bowl on April 23 is still up in the air.

“Maybe, maybe not,” he said.

“That’s the same answer I’m getting from the doctors.”

Ryan Graham, who started as the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart last season before emerging as the starter late in the year, took the first reps with the starters on Tuesday.

Anthony Maddie, who missed last season with back surgery, also took some snaps with the starters.

“You don’t lose a job over injury here,” Carey said of Maddie, who started as Hare’s backup last season. “Now it’s your job that once you come back from injury to keep it. We’re trying to figure out the depth chart as we go.”

Hare wasn’t the only starter to be out on Tuesday. Linebacker Renard Cheren, who started 12 games as a freshman and was fifth on the team in tackles, was out for the first practice and his availability for the spring season is unclear, Carey said.

“It’s not an illness but it’s not an injury, it’s more something that he’s not feeling well that’s internal,” he said.

“We’re football players,” linebacker Jamaal Payton said. “It’s all fun when the ball gets thrown in there. It’s so much more fun.”

Pitchers escape trouble

Kisch too much for Sycamore

BURLINGTON – The Sycamore softball team dropped its second game on the young campaign at the hands of the Central Rockets on Tuesday, 10-0, in five innings after only being able to muster three hits on the contest.

The Spartans had Central’s Emily Kisch, a senior pitcher who is committed to Upper Iowa University, in a jam twice in the game and failed to execute.

The biggest of which was runners on first and second with one out in the top of the fourth. Lauren Wisdom hit a deep liner that allowed the runner on second to tag up. Kisch shut the door with runners on the corners and two away with a strikeout.

“Kisch is a good pitcher and most of the girls who faced her last year are gone,” Sycamore coach Jill Carpenter said after the loss. “Hitting is contagious both ways. We are young and we just need to see some more live pitching and get some more games under our belts.”

After moving to 1-2 on the year, center fielder Addison Foulk, one of the few seniors on the team, said the team is still adjusting with the mix of young players on the team.

“It is nice to get to know the younger players and get to raise them to the level where we are,” Foulk said. “It is the job of not just me, but all of the upperclassmen to bring these girls along and show them how we do things at the varsity level.”

The Spartans also committed three errors in the game, which Carpenter suggested is more endemic of early season mistakes “If you learn from every error you make, you won’t make the same error twice,” Carpenter said.

For the Rockets, they improve to 2-0 on the season. Emily Kisch struck out five batters, four of them looking. Kisch also added a huge day at the plate, going 3 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs, plus was a home run short of the cycle. The Rockets banged out a total of nine hits over the shortened five-inning affair.

The Spartans (1-2) return to action Saturday, hosting McHenry in a doubleheader.

DeKALB – DeKalb’s pitchers found themselves in sticky situations at certain points in the game Tuesday afternoon.

Luckily for the Barbs, they were able to escape innings with little harm done against them, beating Huntley 5-1.

DeKalb starting pitcher Jacob Perkins limited Huntley (2-2) to only one run on the day, but the story may have changed had he not escaped a few innings with runners on base. Huntley left 11 runners on base courtesy of nine total walks – five by Perkins.

“Pitching-wise, at times we were our own worst enemy.” DeKalb coach Justin Keck said. “We were able to at least miss their bats enough to keep ourselves out of too much trouble or allow them to capitalize. We gave up three hits but gave up nine walks. Normally on an average night, that’s a recipe for disaster. Tonight, we were fortunate enough to win and hopefully we can make adjustments in the future.”

When the Barbs (3-2) weren’t surrendering walks, they were inducing outs. The Red Raiders leading batter was Noah Konie, who recorded one hit but reached base three times.

The Barbs brought their bats in the third inning, causing the Red Raiders to make a pitching change with no outs and the bases loaded. In that inning, the Barbs batted once through their lineup and posted three runs on the scoreboard to take a 4-0 lead. Designated hitter Danny Garcia drove home two RBIs in the game and went 2 for 4 with two walks “Obviously, we have very high hopes for Danny.” Keck said. “I don’t even know if our hopes are as high as the hopes he has for himself because that’s just the kind of kid he is. He’s such a hard worker and is very dedicated and we’re going to need him on a consistent basis. But obviously we’re gonna need guys on base for him to be a clutch hitter. It has to be a total team effort and the results are starting to come.”

Sign of the mimes Maddon’s stunts growing stranger as spring training rolls along

MESA, Ariz. – If you can jump the shark with daily spring training shows and gimmicks, the Cubs may have finally done it 32 days into camp when they invited a mime to join the morning fun Tuesday before stretch time.

Then, again …

“I’m sure he’ll come up with something else that’s going to blow the mime away, too,” pitcher Jason Hammel said.

Hammel was referring, of course, to manager Joe Maddon and the “tornado in his head” that for the past decade has famously resulted in magicians and zoo animals in clubhouses during losing streaks – and that has set the tone this spring for daily sideshows and spectacles that have drawn news and social media attention for the last month.

“I’m sure there’s some people out there who think we’re pretty weird,” Hammel said.

Weird is one thing. But in a Cub spring training that has been built around an Embrace the Target theme, are they running the risk of enlarging that target with a steady stream of spring productions that have included DJs, musicians, motivational speakers breaking bricks

and 2-by-4s, a ’70s Day with trickedout van, clown wigs and pimp suits, and a politically incorrect celebration of Japanese infielder Munenori Kawasaki that featured karaoke, samurai headbands and “Kung Fu Fighting” blaring from speakers?

And then a mime.

Enough said? Literally?

“I don’t think so,” said Maddon, who has put much of the show planning in the hands of comedically gifted strength coach Tim Buss (who found the mime). “If people misinterpret it, honestly, that’s their fault.

Because, really, it’s just about the esprit de corps of the day.

“It has nothing to do with your work except that I think your work could be better, because you get off to a good start.”

The mime questions came on the same day that Sports Illustrated added its own bull’s-eye to the Cubs’ target this year, releasing images of the Cubs on the cover of its regional baseball preview issue. SI predicts the Cubs will reach the World Series, and lose to the Astros.

“Just get us there,” Maddon said with a smile. “SI, please get us there.

I’ll be happy with that.”

Maddon and players dismissed the notion of the legendary SI cover jinx.

Carey said the middle linebacker position is one of several that he has his eye on this spring – including the safety spot to replace Marlon Moore, the third and fourth wide receivers and who will replace four-year starters Andrew Ness (center) and Aidan Conlon (left tackle).

When the Huskies went team, the whistle was blown almost immediately after the snap – not allowing much contact but giving players the chance to work on technique.

“You really want to focus on your technique on the first few days,” offensive lineman Levon Myers said.

“Yeah, you can’t hit, but that gives you

a chance to make sure, ‘Is my first step right? Is my hand placement right?’ It lets you really get into those things.”

The first practice of the season ended on a lighthearted note, with the Huskies doing a player-favorite drill in which an offensive lineman runs a goal line pass route against a defensive lineman. The highlight was when offensive lineman Nathan Veloz faked like he was running an out pattern before cutting back inside and catching the touchdown from quarterback Charlie Rotherham – sending the offensive players into a frenzy.

“Seeing fat guys running routes, it’s good stuff,” Carey laughed. “As a former fat guy myself, people like that.

Football is fun, and it can get really boring really quick if you’re just practicing. I played it, I know. You have to interject some things that are fun.”

Morgan Newport threw a no-hitter in her first start of the year as the DeKalb softball team won 12-0 at Elgin on Tuesday.

Newport had 13 strikeouts and a walk. Freshman Mallory Warner was 3 for 3 in the Barbs’ opener.

Kaneland edges Marengo: The Knights won at home against Indians, 4-3.

The game was a rematch of a Class 3A state semifinal from last year, which Marengo won 2-1.

Courtney Davis (1-1) pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief for the win. Ally Jesinowski got the start and allowed all three runs on four hits with five strikeouts.

Lexi Abbruzzo, Davis and Katie Kurzrock each had two hits for the Knights (1-1).

G-K knocks off Byron: Madison Wagner hit a three-run home run as the Cogs won their second straight, 5-3, on the road.

Ashley Peterson had an RBI double and has a hit in each of the three games for the Cogs (2-1) this year.

BASEBALL Sycamore wins opener: In the Spar-

tans’ 6-3 win over Burlington Central, the Rockets scored three in the top of the third before Sycamore answered with six in the fourth.

Michael Beaudoin had two hits, while Tyler Didio drove in two runs for the Spartans.

In the decisive fourth, Jack Mizgalski singled to score Didio to tie the game, then Mizgalski scored on an error.

Even when they’re at full strength, the Bulls have issues.

Consistency. Intensity. Meshing players’ strengths and roles, to name a few.

But there’s no question that being healthy is the best way to go about the battle for one of the final Eastern Conference playoff spots.

In their 109-102 win over Sacramento on Monday, the Bulls had their starting five (Derrick Rose, Jimmy Butler, Mike Dunleavy, Taj Gibson, Pau Gasol) together for only the second time this year.

“It’s about getting that chemistry and figuring out where the ball needs to get,’’ coach Fred Hoiberg said Tuesday. “I thought we did a good job getting the ball to Derrick, who had it going late in the game. Taj made some big plays all game long at both ends.

Pau hit a big shot, but he’s on a limit.’’

One key issue is trying to find a way to use Derrick Rose and Jimmy Butler most effectively on offense.

Rose, who is 9 for 15 and 10 for 15 in the Bulls’ last two games, is on a roll.

The last time Rose had back-to-back 60 percent shooting games when he took at least 10 shots was Feb. 26-27, 2010, according to ESPN Stats ace Jacob Nitzberg.

“He’s playing his best stretch of basketball,’’ said Hoiberg, adding that Rose probably rushed his return from his training-camp eye injury.

“He was basically in a dark room for three weeks after the eye injury. Did he come back too soon? Looking back on it, we could have got him in bet-

ter rhythm and better shape to start the year. But he wanted to be out there with his teammates for the first game.’’

That said, Rose now seems to be peaking at the right time.

“There’s no doubt about it,’’ Hoiberg said. “He’s raising up and taking and making clutch shots with no fear. He’s attacking the basket. He’s doing a good job finding mismatches and throwing ahead on the break. And his defense has been much better the last few games, applying more hand pressure, getting deflections and getting in the ball better on the pick-and roll.’’

Butler, on the other hand, has been a mixed bag. While he’s still very solid in his big defensive role, he’s not the same player offensively he was earlier in the year.

In Dublin, pub crawls are the thing to do. Some tourists wander independently through the Temple Bar area, but they can waste a lot of time looking for the city’s storied pubs, especially the ones tucked into out of the way places. Or you can go on a guided crawl with a theme.

The actors who conduct the literary tour enchant with performances of passages written by Dublin’s literary giants – James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, Samuel Beckett and Sean O’Casey.

They stop at all their favorite watering holes, like The Duke and the Old Stand, and often give a bonus reading at Trinity College.

Just as interesting, a musical tour encourages singing to the tunes of professional musicians who also present the history of Irish music and musical instruments while visiting the Ha’penny Bridge Inn and Oliver St. John Gogarty’s pub.

On both tours, you can quench your thirst with the local Guinness.

There’s not much time to sample the food on either one.

But Dublin’s chefs can’t be forgotten. In their hands, Ireland’s specialties like tangy butter, fresh-caught salmon, streaky bacon and potatoes become something ethereal. An Irish breakfast of rashers of bacon, fried eggs, toast, broiled tomato and complete with blood sausage is an experience. And despite squeamishness at its title or appearance, the sausage is very tasty. Dinner often highlights that salmon, not farmed, and delicately flavored.

Irish chefs know how to give it special treatment, presenting it surrounded with puff pastry, baked gently, drenched it in butter and chive sauce. You won’t be disappointed. And you don’t have to make the puff pastry yourself. Most supermarkets carry it in the frozen food section.

A French chef might call a salmon turnover salmone en croute, but it’s elevated enough by the pastry for a company dinner. The recipe is seasoned with fresh tarragon, not always available.

A cook who substitutes fresh dill might want to skip the next ingredient, coriander. Serve it up like a chef, on top of the sauce, to show off the gloriously delicate puff pastry and keep it from getting soggy.

Lamb is another Irish stalwart, especially in early spring. Modern chefs are playing with Mediterranean ingredients, like basil, olive oil and

balsamic vinegar. The basil makes a pleasing change from mint sauce.

SALMON TURNOVERS WITH CHIVE SAUCE Makes 4 servings

Sometimes fresh chives are available with the little purple flowers. If you see them, buy them and use the flowers as a garnish. They are entirely edible.

1 stick unsalted Irish butter 1 small onion, diced ½ cup fresh white bread crumbs zest and juice of 2 lemons 2 teaspoons of fresh tarragon 1 teaspoon ground coriander (optional) 2 sheets frozen puff pastry (17.3-ounce package) thawed at room temperature for 30 minutes 4 salmon fillets, 5 to 6 ounces each, skin removed 1 large egg beaten with a tablespoon water (egg wash) Preheat the oven to 400F. Grease a baking sheet a light coating of neutral oil like canola; set aside.

Melt butter in a medium skillet on medium heat. Add the diced onion; cook for 3 to 5 minutes, until tender, being careful not to burn. Take the pan off the heat; stir in the bread crumbs, lemon zest, tarragon and coriander, if using. Set aside.

Lightly flour a work surface. Unfold the 2 pastry sheets onto it. Roll out each one into a 12-inch square and cut the squares in half, to form 4 puff pastry rectangles. Place a salmon fillet on one half of each rectangle, leaving a 1-inch border all around. Spoon on enough breadcrumb mix to cover the fish; press down lightly. Brush the borders of each pastry rectangle with the egg wash. Fold the pastry over to form a turnover. Pierce the top of the pastry; brush it with the egg wash.

Transfer the turnovers to the baking sheet.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until the pastry is golden.

To serve, spoon a puddle of the chive sauce (below) onto each plate and swirl it around with the back of the spoon. Place a turnover on top of the sauce. Garnish with chopped chives, or 2 chive blades crossed in the center, or chive flowers.

CHIVE SAUCE

Makes about 1-¾ cups

¾ cup whipping cream 5 tablespoons unsalted Irish butter ½ cup minced shallots 1-¾ cups chopped fresh chives, 2 tablespoons or 8 blades, reserved for garnish (see recipe above) 1 tablespoon olive oil sea salt and ground white pepper, to taste

In a small saucepan over medium heat, bring the cream to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium; cook gently for 4 to 5 minutes, until reduced by half.

Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Cook shallots for 3 to 4 minutes, until tender. Add half the chives, and cook stirring for 2 to 3 minutes, until they are wilted. Process until smooth in a food processor or blender or with a stick blender.

Slowly add the reduced cream and remaining butter, olive oil, salt, and pepper.

Process until smooth, 10 seconds. Cover and refrigerate up to 24 hours. Before using, stir in the remaining chopped chives and let the sauce sit on the counter for 20 minutes.

LAMB RACKS WITH BASIL DRESSING

First make the dressing: 1 bunch fresh basil leaves juice of 1 lemon, plus zest ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil salt, pepper, to taste Combine all the ingredients in a food processor or blender and pulse until smooth.

Set aside.

Now cook the lamb: 2 racks of lamb, trimmed and cut into 6 chops each 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar sea salt and fresh ground black pepper, to taste 2 tablespoons olive oil

Rub the chops with the vinegar and season with salt and pepper. Heat the oil in a grill pan Makes 4 servings or medium skillet over medium-high heat.

This recipe comes together very quickly and Cook the lamb for 3 to 4 minutes on each easily, especially if you have the butcher trim side, keeping it still pink in the center. Serve and cut the lamb racks for you. with a drizzle of the basil dressing.

Easter sides are depressingly predictable. There will be asparagus, of course. If you’re lucky, there might even be three or four variations of asparagus. And there will be peas. And gratin potatoes. And probably some sort of salad that most people will only eat to be polite. Not that there’s anything wrong with any of this.

It’s just that it would be nice to offer something different. So we’ll help you with this one. Try our butter roasted radishes with tarragon and lemon. It’s a simple dish that comes together in minutes, but has a wonderful flavor that is both rich and light and lemony – the perfect combination for spring.

Spring is an exciting time for food in the little farming village where I live in the northeast of England. Wild garlic and asparagus grow as high as the lambs bounce, daffodils tickle the playing fields and fresh optimism blows through the community as the days get longer and the farmers get busier. But nowhere is the celebration of spring more happily played out than on the dinner table on Easter Sunday.

Although my family is Hindu, having lived in England for more than 30 years has meant we celebrate the cultural bits of Easter, which includes the Sunday feast with family and friends.

We always have leg of lamb as our centerpiece with the season’s freshest greens to accompany it. Still, we can’t help but spice up our lamb a little with warming seasonings. In India, you’ll often hear meat described as “so good it melts in your mouth.”

It’s the highest accolade that can be awarded to meat, and cooking it slowly leaves it ridiculously soft without a quarrel.

This recipe is a beautiful alternative to a traditional Easter Sunday roast lamb. It’s packed full of flavor for no more effort than usual; the dish takes just minutes to prep. It’s best served with fresh asparagus and peas, some pan-fried potatoes dressed in cumin, salt and butter, and yogurt with fresh mint and grated cucumber.

Indian-Spiced Easter Lamb

Start to finish: 2 hours (30 minutes active) Servings: 6 1 tablespoon cumin seeds (or 1¼ tablespoons ground cumin) Two 2-inch cinnamon sticks (or 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon) 3/4 tablespoon kosher salt 2-inch chunk fresh ginger 6 cloves garlic 1 tablespoon garam masala 1½ teaspoons chili powder 1½ tablespoons canola oil 5-pound leg of lamb 2 cups boiling water 1 tablespoon cornstarch Heat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a large-baking dish with foil.

Using a mortar and pestle or spice grinder,

grind the cumin seeds and cinnamon until fine. In a food processor, combine the cumin-cinnamon mixture with the salt, ginger, garlic, garam masala, chili powder and canola oil. Blend until smooth.

Use a paring knife to cut deep slits into the lamb on all sides. Spread the seasoning paste over the lamb, using your hands to get it into all the nooks and crannies, including the slits.

Set the lamb into the prepared pan and roast for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, pour the water around the outside of the lamb, then cover tightly with foil. Reduce the heat to 325 degrees F. and bake for another hour.

Remove the lamb from the pan, cover with foil and let rest for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, carefully pour the liquid in the pan into small saucepan. Simmer until reduced by half.

Mix the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons cool water, then add to the simmering liquid.

Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened.

Slice the lamb and serve with the thickened pan jucies.

Nutrition information per serving: 420 calories; 160 calories from fat (38 percent of total calories); 18 g fat (6 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 175 mg cholesterol; 940 mg sodium; 4 g carbohydrate; 1 g fiber; 0 g sugar; 56 g protein.

Pile the radish halves in the center of a rimmed baking sheet. Drizzle with the butter and toss to coat. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast for 20 minutes, or until tender and lightly browned. Arrange on a serving platter, then sprinkle with the lemon zest and tarragon. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Nutrition information per serving: 80 calories; 50 calories from fat (63 percent of total calories); 6 g fat (3.5 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 15 mg cholesterol; 220 mg sodium; 5 g carbohydrate; 2 g fiber; 3 g sugar; 1 g protein.

By the 1950s, both DeKalb and Sycamore had public pools, but those weren’t the only places DeKalb County residents went to cool off in the summer.

In the summer of 1954, DeKalb County Sheriff Francis J. Sullivan started to get worried about “nocturnal swimming parties” at a gravel pit on the Sears farm, 3 miles southeast of Sycamore, according to a report in the Chronicle in June of that year.

On a Tuesday afternoon, a Chronicle reporter went out to the pit with Sheriff’s Deputy Charles Cook. The story in the next day’s paper gives a fascinating snapshot of what life was like in DeKalb County at the time.

The visit came a day after a vehicle crash in which a 19-year-old DeKalb man driving away from the gravel pit collided with another vehicle carrying a rural DeKalb County couple.

(The woman later died and the crash spawned lawsuits that played out over the years.)

Sullivan told the Chronicle that as many as 600 to 800 people were at the pit on hot nights, “crowding into the L-shaped water-filled pit without supervision of any kind, no lights, no safety devices, and with no checkups on who is in the water,” the reporter wrote June 30, 1954. “In addition, youthful hot rod enthusiasts have been holding impromptu hill climbs on the mounds of gravel.”

That’s a lot of people.

In 1953, more than 800 people went swimming June 14 when the Hopkins Park pool in DeKalb opened for the first day of swimming that year.

The Chronicle writer described conditions at the gravel pit: “The area is littered with beer cans and other debris. There is a diving board consisting of a huge plank driven into the gravel bank and supported by a pile driven into the sand at the water’s edge. In the pit are floating numerous other planks, thick and heavy,

The reporter talked to several people who where swimming the gravel pit that day.

“A trio of good looking and attractive young women said that the water was about 12 or 15 feet deep in the ‘deepest part’ with rather abrupt dropoffs a few feet from shore. ‘It would be a shame to close this,’ a couple of the girls declared. ‘It’s such a nice place and the water is so cool and nice.’ ‘You know,’ one of them added, ‘there’s too many little kids in the pools (Sycamore and DeKalb) you just can’t have any fun.’ “ Because there were no changing rooms at the gravel pit, people changed in cars, or just went skinny dipping.

“The sheriff said there have been persistent reports that in the ‘wee sma[ll] hours’ the swimmers have been prone to forget all about the annoyances of bathing suits and have been

dunking themselves in the raw, both sexes,” the article said.

The sheriff was concerned that someone would drown.

“We will be fishing somebody out of there with grappling hooks some of these nights if something isn’t done about this place. It’s dangerous.”

The next day, the Chronicle reported that the gravel pit had been closed.

“Wire gates were strung across the

entrances Wednesday afternoon and signs posted on the gates which read ‘No Swimming by order of the DeKalb County Sheriff,” the article said. “Sheriff Francis J. Sullivan said the owners of the land [and] the lessees of the gravel rights had co-operated in the closing of the unguarded, unlighted pit. The night patrol will check the pit frequently to see that the no trespassing orders are not violated the sheriff said.”

SCHOOLS Excellence in Education Award recipients recognized DAILY CHRONICLE The DeKalb County Excellence in Education Awards were presented last week at the Kishwaukee College Conference Center.

This is the 17th year of this annual award to recognize five DeKalb County school employees, one in each of five categories: Teacher Grades PreK5, Teacher Grades 6-8, Teacher Grades 9-12, Administrator and Support Staff.

Yvonne Johnson, retired elementary school teacher in the Sycamore School District, has established an endowed fund with the DeKalb County Community Foundation to make these awards possible.

“I’m delighted Yvonne Johnson has created this program to reward excellence in our profession,” Regional Superintendent Amanda Christensen said in a news release. “These individuals represent all of the talented people working in our schools.”

“Nominations were a joint effort from teachers, administrators and the community,” Dan Templin, execu-

tive director of the DeKalb County Community Foundation, said in the release.

“This program recognizes those who are respected and admired for playing an active role in their schools and communities. They inspire a love of learning in their students.”

Each winner will receive a $1,000 award, an engraved clock and a personalized medallion. A nonpartisan committee made the final determination from the 22 nominees. The 2016 recipients are: • Kendra Brauer, a second-grade teacher at Kingston Elementary School in the Genoa School District.

• Shelly Tripp, a sixth-grade math teacher at Sandwich Middle School.

• Jonathan Liechty, a high school social studies and math teacher at Somonauk High School.

• Barb Evenson, a paraprofessional and custodian for Hiawatha School district.

• Ryan Janisch, the Principal of North Grove Elementary School in Sycamore School District.

One study published in 2013 found the brand-name versions of several popular drugs were used 23 percent to 45 percent of the time when generic versions were available.

The report also pointed out a problem with taking brand-name drugs instead of generic versions: a person might get fewer health benefits. Why is that? Any medicine will work only if it is taken. And many studies have found people are less likely to take brand-name drugs when they are prescribed than they are to take generic drugs when they are prescribed.

That’s probably because the brand-name drugs cost more.

While I believe the evidence shows almost all generic drugs perform as well as brandname drugs, that evidence is based on the “average” person in studies typically involving hundreds or thousands of people.

Now and then I have a patient who swears a generic drug is not as effective as the brand-name drug. It is possible the patient’s body chemistry is different in some way from that of the average person. So I prescribe the brand-name drug – but the insurance company determines how much more the patient will have to pay.

Dear Dr. K: My doctor switched me from several brand-name drugs to generic versions of those drugs. It has saved me a lot of money – but are they really as good for me?

Dear Reader: The vast majority of generic drugs have been shown to be equally effective as brand-name drugs, and no more likely to cause side effects. There have been a few exceptions, which I’ll mention. But that is my bottom line – and I vote with my feet: I take generic drugs. They work as well as the brand-name drugs they replaced, they haven’t caused side effects and they save me money. What’s not to like?

Drugs available in the United States are carefully examined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA makes sure a generic drug has the same chemical structure as a brand-name drug, and the generic drug behaves the same way in the body.

Still, once the FDA has released a generic drug for widespread use, a much larger number of people take it than was true when it was being tested in the pre-approval period.

That means rare problems may emerge in the post-approval period.

There have been many careful studies comparing generic drugs to their brandname equivalents in the post-approval period. Almost always, the generics prove identical. However, there have been a few instances where the generic drug was not equivalent – at least until a problem in the manufacturing process was corrected. Examples include some generic drugs to treat underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism).

In late 2015, an expert committee of the American College of Physicians summarized what is known scientifically about generic drugs. The committee’s report agrees with

Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY My sister and I have no interest Jeanne in body piercing Phillips (except our ears), but we have seen it on friends and are not impressed. However, our 44-year-old mom got her nipples pierced and has started wearing jewelry there.

Our parents are divorced and she’s not in a relationship right now, so it’s not to impress a man. She says she did it to feel good about herself, which makes no sense to us. She takes off her top to show her female friends when they come over, and we can see them literally roll their eyes, but she doesn’t seem to notice.

She now has started showing off her piercings to our friends. I’m talking about girlfriends, but even so, we find this beyond embarrassing. They’re polite to her face but laugh behind her back, and word about it has spread, which we find humiliating. I suppose we should be thankful at least she hasn’t pierced her most personal place to show off to our friends like we’ve seen some girls do.

We think some kind of midlife crisis or hormonal imbalance is causing her to act this way, but we wish she’d find a better outlet.

If she wants to make a fool of herself in front of her friends, that’s one thing. But we don’t think she has the right to embarrass us in front of our friends. What can we do? – Embar-

A bridge player needs to be a detective. There are clues littered around every deal, just waiting to be interpreted correctly.

In today’s deal, first there is a bidding question. North opens one club, East overcalls one heart, South responds one spade, and North raises to two spades. What should South do now?

Then we don our deerstalker and decide what South should do in four spades. West leads the heart jack.

East wins with his king, cashes the heart ace, and continues with the heart five. When South ruffs up with the spade six, West discards a diamond. How should South continue?

If responder bids one of a major and is raised by opener to two of that major, responder passes with nine losers, insists on game with seven losers, and makes a game-try with eight losers. So, here, South, over two spades, continues with three clubs. Then North should jump to four spades because he has good clubs, two aces and four-card spade support.

South, who must hold his pointed-suit losers to one, would usually take the spade finesse. However, if West had that king, surely he would have overruffed at trick three. South should lead his spade queen, then put up dummy’s ace. Here, the king drops, and declarer can claim. But if the king does not appear, South plays another trump and hopes clubs are 3-3 or East can be squeezed if he has four clubs and the diamond king.
