Weather or not, snow comes

Even I have started to take it on faith that when they say it’s going to happen, it really will.

I’ve been a weather skeptic for most of my life. But forecasters really are getting better at predicting the weather. I’m usually the guy in the newsroom who says, “It’s not gonna happen.”

But lately, it has, and pretty reliably, too.

So finally, I let my guard down. I never publicly declared my skepticism to the newsroom (no one complained) or to anyone else.

When I got home, I moved the snowblower to the center of the garage, ready to deploy. Pulled an extension cord over so it would be all ready to electric start. I went to bed early and set my alarm early so I’d have extra time to clear the driveway before going about my day.

Then we all woke up to basically nothing.

I almost felt let down for a second, before I turned the alarm off and went back to sleep.

Of course then we ended up with just enough March snow to remind us all that spring is still a ways off, no matter how many days there were in February or what those groundhogs had to say about it.

Oh well. We’ll get to spring soon enough.

SYCAMORE – Residents can vote early at five locations throughout the county, including the DeKalb Township building.

Voting equipment was delivered Friday to the DeKalb County Legislative Center, 200 N. Main St., Sycamore; DeKalb Township Building, 2323 S. Fourth St., DeKalb; Northern Illinois University Holmes Student Center, Kirkland Village Hall, 511 W. Main St., Kirkland; and the Sandwich Fire Station, 310 E. Railroad St., Sandwich.

Early voting at each of the sites will be open until Sunday. The hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to noon Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

From Monday through March 13, polls will be open at the same locations from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

“There should be a time frame somewhere in there, even if you’re a working person or something else,” DeKalb County Clerk and Recorder Doug Johnson said.

LONDON – A documentary about singer Amy Winehouse has won an Academy Award, but her father isn’t celebrating.

Mitch Winehouse said Tuesday that it’s “fantastic” that people still love his daughter, who died of alcohol poisoning in 2011 at age 27.

But he said Asif Kapadia’s film “Amy,” which won the best-documentary Oscar on Sunday, “has no bearing on her life, apart from the fact she was born and unfortunately she passed away – everything in between is basically fabricated.”

Mitch Winehouse has been a vocal critic of the film since its premiere in May at the Cannes Film Festival. He told The Associated Press that he “went mad – I was throwing things at the screen” when he first saw Kapadia’s documentary, which includes interviews with friends, family members and fellow musicians. Some viewers have criticized her father for appearing to deter her from going to rehab. He said that impression is inaccurate.

“We did our best in our own way as a family to nurture Amy and to help her,” he said.

DeKALB – World record-setting trekker Hannah McKeand abandoned a nine-to-five career in marketing and created a more adventurous life for herself, which she is exected to tell about in her keynote speech at an upcoming YMCA awards dinner.

“I didn’t have a dream when I was a kid that I wanted to work in the outdoors. ... I have worked really hard to be successful in this environment. It’s been just a complete 180 [-degree] turnaround from what I worked in,” McKeand said. “It’s just a nice message that you can reinvent yourself anytime you need to or you want to.”

McKeand will be the special guest speaker at this year’s Kishwaukee Family YMCA’s annual Y Community Awards dinner, which will be held in May at Faranda’s banquet facility in DeKalb.

“Hannah was chosen as our keynote speaker for the uniqueness of her achievement, her inspirational manner and her positive values about finding courage and strength in your inner self to reach your goals,” said Heather Dunker, Kishwaukee YMCA marketing and communications director.

The night will also include an awards presentation to community members who have a passion for strengthening our community, according to the YMCA’s web post about the annual event.

The 42-year-old polar explorer holds an elite record as the world’s fastest woman to journey to the South Pole – solo. In 2006, she started out on the coast of Antarctica and trekked some 690 miles, pulling a 176-pound sled, to the frigid, southernmost part of the world. It was a feat that took her 39 days, nine hours and 33 minutes to complete.

“I had a very different life course before all of this happened. ... I was a bit more of an urban person,” McKeand said. “When I realized that I was really in love with these wilderness spaces, I had to work really hard to get the skills that I needed to be successful

The British native who now makes her home in Salt Lake City, got into exploring in 2001, and her first adventure was in the Western Desert near Egypt. Since then, she has embarked on at least five other journeys. She has explored on skis and by boat, as part of groups and solo, and on six of the seven continents McKeand is likely to tell about some of the lemons-into-lemonade circumstances that pushed her to finally pursue her passion, including a relationship breakup and workplace changes.

Now she is a guide and expedition leader, heading explorations in the Arctic and to Antarctica, which have her gone from home for months out the year.

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Shawn Thrower has concocted a secret cookie recipe strictly for Sycamore elementary school students.

The “Humphrey” is available only to those students participating in Sycamore’s One District, One Book reading program – a districtwide initiative to encourage families to read together. Throughout March, District 427 elementary-schoolers are expected to read a chapter a day from “The World According to Humphrey,” by Betty G. Birney.

“It’s cool when you can see both sides: both school and home being connected through one book,” West Elementary Principal Kristi Crawford said.

The book chronicles the happenings at Longfellow School, from the perspective of the class hamster, Humphrey.

“You try and pick a book that the young kids will enjoy but also the older kids will enjoy,” Crawford said.

Kindergarten through eighthgrade classes will read the book together, but members of the community, such as Thrower, owner of Shawn’s Coffee Shop in Sycamore, have found their own ways to get involved.

Thrower toyed for days with a recipe for a sunflower seed and coconut cookie – a dessert made with “hamster food.” After a long day of baking, the perfect batch came out at 3 a.m., and tasted so good he ate six before realizing he’d nailed the recipe.

“I really like this cookie because it has a lot of flavor,” Thrower said.

Polka Dot Bakery in Sycamore has a Humphrey cookie of its own – a sugar cookie decorated to look like the book’s lead hamster.

But business owners throughout Sycamore have their own copies of “The World According to Humphrey,” and are prepared to quiz students about story’s details, to be sure their young customers have done their homework, and to foster a sense of exclusivity among “Humphrey”

“The average customer can’t come in and ask for 10 Humphrey cookies,” Thrower said.

The program, which was launched at each school throughout the past week, has already planted a love for reading in some students, Crawford said.

“I don’t see it being homework at all for them. A lot of the kids have told me that they’ve been reading even more than they’re supposed to,” she said. “I think they’re discovering that it’s an activity that they really like to do.”

Their progress isn’t graded, rather measured by one trivia question each day, or incorporated into the students’ regular coursework.

But getting them to read hasn’t been a chore.

In fact, Crawford has found having the district’s bus drivers, technicians and cooks read the book along with

children has made them feel a part of something exciting.

“Even in our office here, we have two little cages with a stuffed hamster in it and you wouldn’t believe the kids who come in and look at it and wave to it,” she said. “One of the best things about it is when the staff at the schools, and then the parents on the other side, are just as excited about it. I’ve even had kids who are reading ahead because they don’t want to put the book down.”

Meanwhile, Sycamore Middle School students are preparing to wrap up their lesson on “Peak” by Roland Smith, who will be visiting the middle schools for an assembly Friday.

“What we’re really trying to do is create a community of readers – to have the parents involved with us to show the students how important reading is and what a great family activity it can be,” Crawford said.

OBITUARIES ZENOBIA B. DUBOIS Zenobia Bernardini DuBois, 92, a longtime resident of DeKalb, died on Monday, February 29, 2016, at Kishwaukee Hospital.

Zenobia was born in 1924 in Cincinnati, Ohio and raised there by her parents, John and Pierina Fioretti Bernardini. She graduated from Maryville College in Tennessee with a degree in Biology and later received her M.A. in Guidance Counseling from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Zenobia excelled in a variety of sports and athletic endeavors and always believed that a healthy body, an educated mind, and a continued communion with the natural and spiritual worlds was the foundation for a well-lived life.

She was a primary school teacher for many decades and was often approached and thanked by many of her former students in the area up until the days before her passing. In 1947, Zenobia married William Robert DuBois, who shared with her a lifetime interest in reading, gardening, travel, music, and the theater. Her husband, a former faculty member at NIU, passed away in 1994.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Dante and Cesare Bernardini; and nephew, John Bernardini, all of Ohio.

She is survived by her sister, Pierina Bernardini Schmidt of Florida; son, William Kane DuBois (Laura Fukuda), of St. Charles, Illinois; daughter, Peri DuBois, of DeKalb; along with seven nieces, one nephew and many grandnieces and nephews. She was devoted to her family and friends and

Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, March 3, at Finch Funeral Home at 310 Oak St. in DeKalb from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 830 N. Annie Glidden Rd. at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 4. Burial will follow the service at Fairview Park Cemetery.

DeKALB – Members of Northern Illinois University’s Black Student Union and the public showed support for the high school’s Black History Month assembly that caused a social media storm and drew extra law enforcement to the DeKalb High School campus last week.

“If it is how they are feeling, then it is their reality,” Timi Adeboje, president of the NIU Black Student Union said to the DeKalb School District 428 Board on Tuesday. “Students shouldn’t be ad-

monished for stating what they feel.”

The assembly took place Feb. 24.

Members of DeKalb High School’s Black Student Union performed spoken-word, skits and music – some of which contained racial slurs. Some saw violent threats on social media after the assembly, which prompted fear and rumors.

Officials place the school on soft lockdown and more than 200 students were absent the next day. Extra security was also present at the school Thursday.

A “soft lockdown” is just like a normal school day, with the exception that students must obtain a pass and have a

staff member escort when they go somewhere such as to the nurse or restroom when class is in session, Superintendent Doug Moeller said.

“We also saw some comments that stated the classroom doors were locked,” he said. “But classroom doors are always to be locked.”

Kendra Wilkinson, an NIU student, said that she was in support of the assembly and student’s rights to speak out about what they see in their life.

“High school is a critical point in upbringing,” she said. “You should be able to have open dialogue about these

things.”

District 428 plans to implement professional development for teachers that deals with “cultural competency” and a student advisory board to talk about cultural issues with the board.

The board currently has a multicultural committee and a committee to deal with the issue of balanced demographics and hiring more minority teachers.

“I’ve already had conversations with the NIU chief diversity officer,” Moeller said. ‘We are meeting this week with her staff and the school district staff.”

Bond set for man accused of having pot, heroin, gun

Officers responded Monday to the 100 block of Crane Drive, where a man was reported to be standing in an apartment hallway with a gun. Williams ducked behind a car when he saw police, then surrendered with his hands up.

Police found a Sig Sauer 9 mm handgun with the serial numbers scratched off in Williams’ apartment, and a loaded magazine next to the gun and two boxes of 9 mm ammunition in a backpack in Williams’ bedroom, court records show.

Police seized 14 bags of suspected heroin weighing 4.33 grams and just less than 6 grams of packaged marijuana they believe belonged to Williams. They also found an altered credit card in his possession that he said someone had given him in Chicago, court records show.

Williams is due back in court March 18. If he is released from the DeKalb County Jail, he must surrender any firearms to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Pension buyout proposals considered The ASSOCIATED PRESS SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers want to hold additional hearings to discuss how to proceed with a pair of similar bills aiming to deal with the state’s pension debt.

The state House Personnel and Pensions Committee held its first meeting Monday on the two proposals. Members of the committee, such as Rep. Elaine Nekritz, D-Northbrook, said more hearings needed to be held so their questions could be answered.

Both plans would allow members of the five state-funded retirement systems to take a lump-sum payout at retirement and forgo regular pension payments. The goal is to give them

Homicides, shootings in city double over same period in ’15

CHICAGO – Homicides and shootings have doubled in Chicago so far this year compared with the same period in 2015, and police have seized fewer illegal guns – more possible signals that officers have become less aggressive in the aftermath of a shooting video released last fall.

Interim Police Superintendent John Escalante said Tuesday that he was so concerned about officers possibly holding back that he filmed a video for the entire department in which he encouraged them to do their jobs and assured them that a federal probe of the force was not aimed at individuals.

“We are aware that there is a concern among the rank and file about not wanting to be the next YouTube video that goes viral,” Escalante said in the video before introducing a segment of his own to remind viewers “why we took this job and swore this oath of office.”

Legislature: Illinois revenue to grow less than 1 percent

SPRINGFIELD – Legislative analysts predict that Illinois revenue will grow only by $200 million this year – less than 1 percent.

The bipartisan Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability’s figure released Tuesday is significantly lower than Gov. Bruce Rauner’s prediction. A commission report said the Republican governor counts $925 million in revenue that “can be described in varying degrees from being unlikely to uncertain.”

A Rauner spokeswoman didn’t immediately comment.

The report said the administration counts on $500 million in federal Medicaid reimbursement under an obsolete formula, $200 million from a possibly complex sale of the Thompson Center state office building in Chicago; and sweeping the state’s “rainy day” fund of $275 million. The commission said job losses and wage weakness contribute to lowered income and sales tax revenue.

Ballot challenge against Cruz tossed by Ill. judge

CHICAGO – A judge has dismissed a claim that Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz isn’t eligible for the Illinois ballot because he was born in Canada.

Cook County Circuit Court Judge Maureen Ward Kirby tossed the case on a technicality Tuesday.

Kirby said the suburban Chicago attorney who filed the complaint, Lawrence Joyce, failed to give a copy of it to Cruz or state electoral board members, as required by Illinois law. Instead, Joyce served only lawyers representing Cruz and the board.

Joyce said the Texas senator can’t be president because he wasn’t born in the U.S. Cruz and some legal experts say he’s eligible because his mother was a U.S. citizen when he was born.

Joyce said he’ll decide whether to appeal after seeing how Cruz fares in Super Tuesday primaries.

Medical marijuana sales nearly $1.5M in February

CHICAGO – Illinois medical marijuana shops had their best month yet in February with nearly $1.5 million in sales, bringing total retail sales to more than $4.4 million since the program began Nov. 9.

Program director Joseph Wright announced Tuesday that registered dispensaries served 3,042 unique patients during February. Two new dispensaries joined the program last month, raising the total to 29 shops as of Monday.

Weather creates slippery conditions for jets at O’Hare

CHICAGO – Snowy conditions at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport have led to a small jet sliding off a runway and a commercial jet sliding on a taxiway.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman said an Embraer Phenom E55P flown by private operator NetJets slid off a runway around noon Tuesday. A Chicago Aviation Department spokeswoman said the plane originally was headed to Executive Airport in Wheeling but landed at O’Hare.

No injuries were reported. The Embraer Phenom carries up to nine occupants.

The FAA spokeswoman said a short time later, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 operated by American Airlines requested to be towed to the terminal after sliding on a taxiway.

The city Aviation Department said more than 375 flights have been canceled at O’Hare because of snow and freezing rain.

Trump, Clinton claim big Super Tuesday wins The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton swept through the South on Super Tuesday – front-runners claiming victory in their parties’ primaries in delegate-rich Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and Virginia. The two appeared ever more likely to end up in a general election showdown.

On the Republican side, Ted Cruz won his home state of Texas, as well as neighboring Oklahoma. Democrat Bernie Sanders picked up a home-state win as well, in Vermont, and won in Oklahoma, too.

Still, the night belonged to Trump and Clinton, who turned the busiest day of the 2016 primaries into a showcase of their strength with a wide swath of American voters.

Signaling her confidence, Clinton set her sights on Trump as she addressed supporters during a victory rally.

“It’s clear tonight that the stakes in this election have never been higher and the rhetoric we’re hearing on the other side has never been lower,” she said.

Trump, too, had his eye on a general election matchup with the former secretary of state, casting her as part of a political establishment that has failed Americans.

“She’s been there for so long,” Trump said at his swanky Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

“If she hasn’t straightened it out by now, she’s not going to straighten it out in the next

four years.”

Trump’s dominance has rattled Republican leaders, who fear he’s unelectable against Clinton in November.

But all efforts to stop him have failed, including an aggressive campaign by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio to discredit the billionaire businessman.

For Rubio, Super Tuesday turned into a bitter disappointment. While many Republican officeholders have rallied around him in recent days, his first victory remained elusive.

With an eye on Florida’s March 15 primary, Rubio vowed to keep up efforts to “unmask the true nature of the front-runner in this race.”

With results still coming in, Trump had won at least 139 Super Tuesday delegates, while Cruz picked up at least 52. Overall, Trump leads the Republican field with 221 delegates.

Sanders’ wins did little to help him make up ground in his delegate race with Clinton. She was assured of winning at least 334 of the 865 at stake on Super Tuesday. That’s compared with Sanders, who has at least 145 delegates.

Tuesday marked the busiest day of the 2016 primaries, with the biggest single-day delegate haul up for grabs. Democrats voted in 11 states and American Samoa, with 865 delegates at stake. Republicans voted in 11 states, with 595 delegates.

Clinton also picked up wins in Alabama, Arkansas, and Texas while Trump carried the GOP contests in Arkansas and Massachusetts.

Our jail always has room for gang members Should Christian Contreras have been on the street the day that he was arrested and charged with aggravated battery with a firearm and mob action in the shooting of two men?

In the months leading up to the Feb. 25 shooting, in which one person was shot in the chest and another in the foot, Contreras had shown little regard for the terms of his probation.

Although he was forbidden from committing any new crimes or from using illegal drugs, he was cited in December

by DeKalb police for possession of marijuana.

Although he was forbidden from associating with known gang members, he was arrested Jan. 30 and charged with possession with marijuana with intent to deliver, possession of a weapon by a felon, and assault. He also was arrested in the company of a known gang member, with whom he had been convicted of brutally beating a man in 2014 outside a DeKalb party.

Despite the fact that Contreras had again been arrested on felony charges, while on probation, in an incident where he had attacked a person who was a member of a rival gang, there appears to have been little effort made to keep him off the street. There should have been.

Instead, DeKalb County Judge Bradley Waller set at $5,000, which Contreras posted not long after and was released from jail.

While free on those felony charges, he tested postitive for marijuana again. He was out on bail and in violation of his probation at the time of his latest arrest.

This time, there were shots fired on a city street in broad daylight, not long before local children returned home on the school bus. It is a lucky thing for all that no one was killed.

We understand that jail is primarily intended as a place for people to serve sentences, not to await trial, and that Contreras is innocent until proven guilty.

However, court records make it clear a pattern was developing in Contreras’ behavior. It should have been an easy case for a prosecutor to make, and for Waller to recognize and set a higher bond amount after Contreras was arrested in January.

But bond was set at a very reachable level, and authorities did not revoke Contreras’ probation soon enough.

Police reports in all three of Contreras’ arrests mention street gang slogans and gang members.

Whether local people who claim affiliation with street gangs are bona-fide members or “wanna-bes,” they are a danger to the public. This is the second high-profile incidence of gang-related violence in DeKalb, and it is time for authorities to take a hard line on it.

Street gangs and their members are not welcome here.

Although the DeKalb County Jail is small, it is up to our prosecutors and judges to make sure there’s always a space in it for gang members who break the law and incite violence.

Contreras is now being held in DeKalb County Jail on $500,000 bond, an amount that will make it more difficult for him to regain his freedom before a trial.

If he’d been given a higher hurdle in his previous arrest, or if his probation had been revoked more swiftly, perhaps things would have been different.

By his “logic,” Kobe Bryant, who grew up in Italy, is not black, Shaquille O’Neal, who spent part of his childhood in Germany, is not black, Miles Davis and Natalie Cole, who grew up in affluent households, were not black and Martin Luther King Jr., child of middle-class comfort and an intact family, was not black. According to him, they were all “raised white.”

Here’s what Carson doesn’t get: What we call “race” is not about neighborhood, class or family status.

While the African hostages upon whose backs this country was built shared certain common approaches to music, faith and art, race ultimately isn’t even about culture. Martin Luther King, for instance, was an opera buff; it’s hard to get further from “black” culture than “Lucia di Lammermoor.”

No, race is something Europeans invented as a tool of subjugation.

The people who came here from England, France and Spain did not initially see themselves as “white,” after all.

They declared themselves white – that is, a superior species of humanity – to justify in their own consciences the evil things they did to the people they took from Africa. Similarly, those Africans knew nothing about “black.” They saw themselves as Fulani, Mende, Mandinkan or Songhay. “Black” was an identity forced upon them with every bite of the lash and rattle of the chains.

In other words, to be black is not to share a common geography, class or family status, but rather, the common

experience of being insulted, bullied and oppressed by people who think they are white. Want to know if you’re black?

Try to rent a house in Miami. Try to hail a cab in Times Square. Try to win an Oscar in Hollywood. You’ll find out real quick.

And there is something spectacularly absurd in the fact of Barack Obama being criticized as “not black” by a Republican. Think about it: In the unlikely event he somehow managed to live the 47 years before his presidency without being insulted, bullied and oppressed by people who think they are white, Obama has sure made up for it since. Members of Carson’s party have called him “boy,” “uppity” and “ape” and have gone to extraordinary and unprecedented lengths to block him from doing ... anything.

So the good doctor can relax. If Obama wasn’t “black” before, he certainly is now.

Voters shouldn’t reward Trump’s assault on democracy Some readers ask how Donald Trump can be a threat to democracy if he is putting himself forward as a candidate. If he ends up attracting a majority of American voters, what could be more democratic?

First, you don’t have to go back to history’s most famous example, Adolf Hitler, to understand that authoritarian rulers can achieve power through the ballot box. In the world today, it has become almost commonplace for elected leaders to lock the door behind them once they achieve power. Vladimir Putin in Russia, Hugo Chávez in Venezuela, Yoweri Museveni in Uganda, Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Turkey – all found ways once in power to restrict opposition, muzzle the media and erode checks and balances.

Trump gives ample reason to fear that he would not respect traditional limits on executive authority. He promotes actions that would be illegal, such as torture. He intimates that he

would use government to attack those who displease him. “They better be careful, they have a lot to hide,” he said last week of the Ricketts family, which owns the Cubs and had donated to a super PAC that opposes him.

He promises diktats – impose a tariff, build a wall – as if Congress is nothing but an inconvenience. His vow to round up and deport 11 million undocumented immigrants, while perhaps not requiring congressional action, would necessitate a kind of intrusive police power this country has never seen. As Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said before flip-flopping on the idea last week, such a roundup would require “jackboots to knock on your door and every door in America.”

Early in his campaign, conventional wisdom held that Trump could never win the Republican nomination. Now many experts assure us that he could never win a general election. Even if he did win, are not

American institutions too resilient, and our system of checks and balances too deeply rooted, to be threatened by a populist demagogue like Trump?

We hope so.

But even Trump’s campaign is an assault on democratic values. Politics is never free of rough-and-tumble accusations, wild exaggerations and unrealistic promises. But when Trump cheers the assault on one protester at his rally and says of another, “I’d like to punch him in the face,” that is something new and different. It is out of the ordinary when a candidate recycles demonstrably false Internet rumors - that thousands of American Muslims celebrated the attacks of 9/11, for example – and stands by them even when they are disproved.

That he has difficulty repudiating the most odious white terrorist group in U.S. history; that he feels no need to explain, debate or defend his pie-inthe-sky proposals; that he degrades

and disparages women, Mexicans, Jews, Muslims, people with disabilities – these are challenges to the core functioning of any democracy.

We would ask Trump’s would-be supporters to think carefully about where he is leading the nation before they vote in the primaries. There is nothing intrinsically racist in worrying that undocumented immigrants are taking jobs from U.S. citizens. It is not hateful to wonder whether terrorists might smuggle themselves into this country disguised as Syrian refugees. Plenty of patriotic Americans are concerned about the country’s direction and are disgusted by phony, consultant-driven politicians.

But Trump is pandering to those fears, not offering solutions. In so doing, he is insulting voters with genuine concerns. We continue to believe that Americans deserve better than that – and are better than that.

Today’s column is for the benefit of one Dr. Benjamin Solomon Carson.

He shouldn’t need what follows, but obviously does. No other conclusion is possible after his interview with Politico a few days ago.

The subject was Barack Obama and what the Republican presidential contender sees as the inferior quality of the president’s blackness. “He’s an ‘African’ American,” said Carson. “He was, you know, raised white. I mean, like most Americans, I was proud that we broke the color barrier when he was elected, but ... he didn’t grow up like I grew up ... .”

Carson, the son of a struggling single mother who raised him in Detroit, and sometimes relied on food stamps to do so, noted that Obama, by contrast, spent part of his childhood in Indonesia. “So, for him to claim that he identifies with the experience of black Americans, I think, is a bit of a stretch.”

Lord, have mercy.

Let’s not even get into the fact that the man questioning Obama’s racial bona fides once stood before an audience of conservatives and proclaimed

New endangered species laws are trying to protect animals that could disappear from the earth if poaching and killing is not stopped.

Sometimes it is just a horn or a tusk that is wanted, but to get it, the animal must be killed. A look at some of the antiques that now can’t be sold legally illustrates the problem. While few would object to the laws that cover living animals, there is controversy about objecting to the sale of ivory, horn or feathers taken from animals more than 50 years ago when there was no scarcity of the animals. Whale oil was a useful source of light, and whale meat was a popular food.

Baby seals and tigers had fur that made attractive, warm coats. An elephant tusk or rhinoceros horn was used to make carved cups and decorative pieces. And eagle feathers were needed by Indians for religious ceremonies. Because some states have passed laws saying no ivory of any age can be legally sold, it has become a confusing market for collectors. Be sure to check the laws the day before you try to sell any parts of an endangered species. Many states are considering laws, some that will exempt piano keys and guitar picks, and others that will confiscate your piece and destroy it. In 2014, Garth’s Auctions in Delaware, Ohio, sold a wine caddy made in the early 20th century from the hoof of a rhinoceros. It brought $1,800. Today it probably would be impossible to

sell in many states. *** Q: We’re cleaning out my father’s house and found a Windsor rocking chair with the label “Crocker Chair Company, Sheboygan, Wisconsin.” We’re wondering if it’s an antique. What is it worth?

A: Silas Crocker was one of the owners of the first furniture factory in Sheboygan. He and a partner established a factory in a converted hotel in 1865. The factory burned down in 1875. Crocker bought a carriage company in 1880 and made chairs, stools, tables, china cabinets and other furniture. In 1924 the company was reorganized. It sold furniture for hotels, offices and schools. Crocker Chair Company was closed by 1932.

Your Crocker rocker is worth $100 to $200. ** * Q: I received a set of Russel Wright dishes when I got married in 1958.All that remains is an oval vegetable dish. It’s marked on the back “Russel Wright by Knowles, Snowflower, Made in U.S.A.” Would this have any value?

A: Russel Wright (1904-1976) designed domestic and industrial wares, including dinnerware, glassware, furniture, aluminum, radios, interiors and more. He designed modern dinnerware for several companies, including Knowles. Snowflower is part of Knowles Esquire line, made between 1956 and 1962. Some say this design of modernistic gray twigs and white dots on a pink background was Wright’s favorite line, although it wasn’t one of the most popular lines at the time.

This 5 3/4-inch-high hoof has been made into a wine caddy. Although estimated at $100 to $200, it sold for $1,800 in 2014. New laws may make it impossible to sell.

Russel Wright dinnerware is collectible today. Your vegetable dish is worth about $40. *** Q: How much are eight bags of Old Advertiser Smoking Tobacco with the rolling papers worth?

The box they came in isn’t in good shape.

A: Old Advertiser Smoking Tobacco was made by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Richard Joshua Reynolds founded a chewing tobacco company in 1875. R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company was incorporated in 1890. Our Advertiser Smoking Tobacco was introduced before 1918. Reynolds sold the brand to Republic Tobacco Inc. in 1987. The rolling papers are used to roll your own cigarettes.

Value: $300. *** Q: My mother has a collection of about 8,000 pieces of Blue Willow.

It includes Japanese, English, and Buffalo Pottery dishes. She had about 32 complete place settings and tons of accessory pieces. She

also has Gaudy Willow bowl and thunder mug set with soap dish and toothbrush holder. Can you help with pricing and selling this collection?

A: Willow pattern has been made in England since 1780 and was made famous by Thomas Minton. The pattern has been copied by factories in many countries, including Germany, Japan and the United States and it still is being made. You need to have an expert look at the collection to determine if it’s the inexpensive twentieth century Blue Willow or the great early Blue Willow. It should be sold by someone who specializes in Blue Willow. The International Willow Collectors (www.willowcollectors. org) hold an annual convention. A list of clubs for collectors of Blue Willow pattern collectibles is listed on its site. *** Q: I have a creamer and sugar marked “Czechoslovakia P.A.L.T.” They are dainty, iridescent and have black lines running north and south. Are they worth anything?

A: This mark was used by Porzellanfabrik Adolf Laufer, a porcelain factory in business in TurnTeplitz, Bohemia (now Trnovany, Czech Republic). The factory was in business from 1919 to about 1938. Some Adolf Laufer porcelain was made for export to the United States. The value of your creamer and sugar is less than $20. *** Tip: Carbon steel blades used in silver table knives sometimes get rust spots. If you rub the blades with a bit of beeswax lip balm, you can clear up spots and prevent new “BEST IN THE MIDWEST OR ANYWHERE”

Defense helps Barbs charge into regional finals

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SOUTH ELGIN – The South Elgin boys basketball team hit a barrage of 3-pointers late in the third quarter to charge into the lead against DeKalb, but a couple of charges late in the fourth sealed the win for the Barbs.

Luke Davis and Nick Snow drew charging fouls on the Storm to help DeKalb escape with a 54-49 victory in a Class 4A South Elgin Regional semifinal on Tuesday.

DeKalb (25-4) had led by as much as nine in the second half, but the Storm (13-17) took a 47-43 lead with 3:32 left in the game. Davis put the Barbs ahead with a layup with 1:14 left, then drew a charge down at the other end four seconds later.

“The scouting report said they like to jump and lead with their feet,” Davis said. “Defense is what we do, I slid over and took the charge for our team.”

Davis missed a shot on the ensuing possession, but Snow drew the charge down the other end. Originally it was called as a foul, but was reversed by another official to give DeKalb possession.

The Barbs seemingly turned the ball over on the next possession, but DeKalb coach Al Biancalana was granted a timeout before they gave up the ball. Joey Sauser made one of two free throws to push the lead to 51-49 with 24.4 seconds left, then Matthew Smith missed the front end of a 1-1, with Davis grabbing his 11th rebound of the game to give DeKalb possession. He was quickly fouled and connected on one of his two free throws.

South Elgin had a couple of last-second 3-point attempts but missed them both, then Michael Pollack went to the line and made both his free throws for the Barbs to seal the wild win.

“It’s great. It’s showing even though we played a little sloppy toward the end, it showed we can still pull it out and get a ‘W,’” Davis said. “I’m happy with how my team finished the game. It’s a great experience we needed in the first round. Now we got this experience, we know what to do.”

Biancalana said he was happy to see his Barbs draw as many charges as they did in the game.

“That was a tough team to try and stay in front of,” Biancalana said.

“When we got beat, our guys were willing to sacrifice their bodies for the benefit of our team defense, and that was absolutely huge.”

DeKalb was leading 39-30 with 2:34 left in the third quarter, and had only trailed at 5-4 to that point. But the Storm rattled off three 3-pointers in a row, including two by Julian Lynch. A layup

The No. 9 Storm were coming off an opening round win against No. 8 Elgin and playing on their home court Monday, so Biancalana said he knew they were eventually going to make a run.

“We knew there was going to be a punch, and we had to absorb the punch and punch back, and we did,” Biancalana said. “I thought the last three minutes we played extremely well. We made shots, made defensive plays, got tough rebounds. It’s not always going to be pretty and we fought through it.”

Davis finished 15 points, 11 rebounds

and four blocks. Cole Tucker had 11 points and five assists. Lynch finished with 15 and Anthony Lynch also had 15.

The top-seeded Barbs will play the winner of today’s matchup between No. 6 Larkin and No. 4 Jacobs.

“We’ll learn from our mistakes tonight,” Biancalana said. “We’ll practice hard and get ready for our next game.”

Conroy said that he is looking forward to the final and has a tremendous amount of respect for both teams.

“We’ll fine tune our practice after we know who our opponent is,” Conroy said. “But we do know that Sycamore and ACC are both great teams.

I’ve only seen Aurora on tape, but we’ve seen Sycamore twice this season and we know that they’re playing well right now and with (Brett) Bemis back, they would be a tough opponent.”

MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland Knights held a narrow lead after the first quarter against Hampshire, but turnovers led to the Whip-Purs taking a lead through the second and third quarters.

But late foul trouble for Hampshire led to the Knights comeback and eventual 73-66 victory over WhipPurs in a Class 3A Kaneland Regional semifinal on Tuesday.

“We knew coming in that Hampshire was a really good team who was

on a roll and on fire at the right time,” Knights coach Joe Conroy said. “We knew it wasn’t going to be easy. We didn’t bring the intensity early that we needed, but we were able to turn it up in the second half.”

Naegele honored by MAC for second week in a row DAILY CHRONICLE

The season is only two weeks old for the Northern Illinois softball team and senior catcher Emily Naegele has already been honored by the conference twice.

Naegele was named the MAC West Player of the Week for the second consecutive week after a strong showing at the Grand Canyon University Invitational.

She went 9 for 12 in Phoenix and was intentionally walked three times in the final game of the tournament. On the season, she is batting .654 after hitting .750 and slugging 1.667 in five games at the invitational.

The Huskies (6-4 overall) play in the Cancer Awareness Tournament, hosted by Saint Louis, this weekend – starting with University of Missouri-Kansas City at 5 p.m. Friday.

Huskies squander double-digit second half lead in loss at Eastern Michigan DAILY CHRONICLE Early in the second half, the Northern Illinois men’s basketball team held a 15-point lead over Eastern Michigan.

Then the Huskies stopped making shots.

The Huskies squandered a double-digit lead in the second half in their 75-71 loss at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday night, dropping their eighth straight road contest.

The Huskies (19-11 overall, 8-9 in MAC West) took a 60-45 lead on a basket by senior guard Travon Baker with 14:08 left in the second half. The next field goal for Northern Illinois came with less than a minute remaining – a layup by junior Aaric Armstead to make it 68-68 with 59 seconds remaining.

It was a stretch of 12 straight missed field goal attempts.

“It seems like after we got up 15, I think the guys got tight,” Northern Illinois coach Mark Montgomery said.

“When the lead started shrinking, we couldn’t make a basket. You have to play 40 minutes to win the game.”

However, Eastern Michigan (16-14 overall, 8-9 in MAC West) answered with a 3-pointer on the right wing by Tim Bond with three seconds left. Bond finished with a team-high 17 points and freshman James Thompson IV had his 17th double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Instead of allowing the Huskies to get a chance at a game-tying 3-pointer, Eastern Michigan elected to send Baker to the free throw line – where he made the first to make it 73-71 and Wilson was called for a lane violation on the second.

It was a rough night for Northern Illinois big man Maric Maric, who finished with one point in 14 minutes with four fouls and had to be helped off the court with a right ankle injury in the second half and didn’t return.

“He’s on crutches right now,” Montgomery said after the game. “We’ll have to evaluate it when we get back home.

But I told the guys, we’re a team, so it’s next-man up.”

The Huskies play the regular season finale at 6 p.m. Friday against Ball State at the NIU Convocation Center in a game that will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.

“But I might put my thoughts on a piece of paper and hand it to you, and then Einstein will give you his,” Bavasi said. “It’s a big difference.

“Joe’s where he is for a reason. And, yeah, he worked hard. But there are people that work as hard as he does. He’s just smart. His heart’s always in the right place. He’s true to himself.

Saladino understands why Sox brought in Rollins

GLENDALE, Ariz. – You’re infielder Tyler Saladino and the White Sox don’t pick up shortstop Alexei Ramirez’s option for 2016.

A door has opened.

You’re Tyler Saladino, the Sox’s stated best option in camp to open the season at short, and veteran Jimmy Rollins is signed on the third day of spring training.

Ouch. A door has slammed shut. On your hand.

But for Saladino, it could be worse. He might never be an everyday shortstop, but he profiles well as a utility infielder, versatile enough to play every position and even the outfield in a pinch. And it’s not a given that Rollins, at 37, is a handsdown slam dunk to be the starter out of spring training. His .224/.285/.358 slash line with 13 homers with the Los Angeles Dodgers isn’t Rollins in his prime.

And his range and glove probably aren’t the Gold Glove, MVP caliber he flashed

all those years with the Philadelphia Phillies, either.

With Cactus League games beginning Thursday, the Sox will Sox try to figure out what Rollins can give them and go from there.

If he can’t provide more than mentoring tips for Saladino and shortstopof-the-future Anderson, they’ll have Saladino, Tyler Saladino 26, to fall back on or to platoon while Anderson’s place is kept warm.

Saladino wanted the starting gig, but he’s smart enough to know why Rollins was brought on board for an inexpensive $2 million if he makes the team.

“Bringing in Jimmy is tons of things,” Saladino said. “It’s competition, it’s a chance to learn from someone of his caliber and his experience. There is a wealth of knowledge there. To be naïve in a situation like that and not learn would be going backwards. So I just try to embrace it. And being alongside him

is extra special.”

There was nothing special about Saladino’s .225 batting average and .267 onbase percentage over 254 plate appearances in 2015, either, his first year in the majors. He was a .261/.351/.395 hitter in the minors.

“I didn’t know that’s what I hit (last season). I don’t pay attention to that,” he said.

But averages are posted everywhere, in big letters on scoreboards.

“I honestly won’t be able to tell you at all what my batting average is,” Saladino said. “I could care less because I know what I did that night and what I need to do. If it doesn’t get done, it doesn’t get done, and you get ready for the next day.”

Or else someone will beat you of a job.

“Absolutely,” Saladino said. “That’s why I’m going to hit [in the cages] right now. Obviously, nobody is going to be happy with .225, if that’s what it was.”

Saladino can field and play a heady enough game to bridge the post-Ramirez era.

“Typically, my whole life I’ve been a guy you can count on for the hit-andruns, the bunts, steal some bags, the situational stuff,” he said. “Drive a guy in if there’s a chance to drive a guy in. I’m not going to bop 30 out every year.”

And always keep your ears open.

“Jerry Hairston was my first hitting coach in (rookie level) Bristol,” Saladino said. “He said, ‘Always keep your eyes and ears open. You might hear something that’s not directed at you, but it might be what you needed to hear.’

That’s the way I am up here. Sure, .225.

But I’m going to find ways to get better.”

Rollins is trying to win a job, but he said it’s easy being himself around Saladino and Anderson, who are both asking questions. The Sox also brought him in to help those two.

“My job is to make sure when they are playing, especially defensively, they are giving themselves the best chance to make that play consistently and turn it into an out,” Rollins said.

“It’s easy for me to be me. There isn’t a competition in that sense.”

All took less money and/or years to sign with, or re-sign with, the Cubs this winter. And the Cubs admit they couldn’t have accomplished their offseason objectives without those compromises, along with some creative contract structuring.

“It’s actually incredible to think about that concept,” manager Joe Maddon said.

Actually, Maddon’s been thinking about the concept for 30 years. He wrote the book on it – a paper, really – in the late 1980s while working as a minor league field coordinator in the Angels’ system.

“It was a concept, where if you could create the right culture, you would get guys wanting to stay longer because of that, irrespective of money,” he said.

“The money would matter, but not to the level that wanting to be in that particular spot would matter.

“So whenever I see guys signing for less and wanting to stay here, I think about that.”

In the Cubs’ case, a team that went to

former general manager who was Maddon’s farm director then. “It’s probably somewhere.”

Bavasi doesn’t remember the details in the paper. But he does remember Maddon using the huge, heavy word processor he carried around at the time to do planning, bang out proposals and often stay up until 3 or 4 in the morning typing ideas that occurred to him that day.

“I really thought I became a better coach by doing that,” Maddon said.

“Those are the things that really helped me understand my craft.”

Three decades later, “team culture” – one of the most overused, meaningless terms in sports – has overtaken “goat” and “century” as the most commonly uttered words in Cubs camp.

“Joe leads that,” Cubs ace Jake Arrieta said.

In fact, the manager embodies what the term means for this team. It shows up in the irreverent, sometimes silly, clubhouse magicians, zoo animal visits, pajama-themed road trips and 1970s day at spring training (complete with tricked-out van and disco music) It’s also there in the “Respect 90” and “Embrace the Target” campaign slogans his first two years with the Cubs, and the mega speakers blasting classic rock

Beefy stew trims down

Warm, simple meal made easier with slow cooker

There are two kinds of people – fans of slow-cookers and those who haven’t tried them. I’m definitely the former.

I just love my slow-cooker. I make everything in it, from summertime ribs to baked potatoes to spaghetti squash. But in the winter, there is nothing quite as satisfying as a thick stew or hearty soup that bubbles away gently all day, slowing filling the house with welcoming aromas while I’m off at work, running errands or spending the day at my daughters’ school.

My kids’ slow-cooker favorite?

Probably Southwestern stew. It has all the flavors they love, plus they are allowed to have (baked) corn chips at dinner, which is exciting stuff around the d’Arabian house.

I make a version that is trimmed down and healthier, full of fiber and protein thanks to the combination of black beans and chickpeas. But the star of this soup is the ground beef. I love ground turkey, and I certainly have made this soup with it, but lean ground beef is, calorie-wise, a close peer of most ground turkey.

In fact, many of the ground turkey packages offered will have higher fat and calorie count than 95 percent lean ground beef. For a 4-ounce serving, lean ground beef boasts 24 grams of protein and just 160 calories and 4 grams of fat. And, ground beef just feels more like comfort food (since I grew up in an era before we regularly ground up our Thanksgiving bird to eat it year-round).

To make this dish even easier, you can prep it up to the step of layering all of the ingredients in the slow-cooker, then refrigerate it overnight. In the morning, just pop the slow-cooker insert into the cooker and walk away.

Slow Cooker Southwestern Stew Start to finish: 4 hours on high, 8 hours on low (20 minutes active) Servings: 6

1 teaspoon olive oil 1½ pounds lean ground beef (93 percent or leaner) 1 large yellow onion, diced 3 cloves garlic, minced or pressed

Quick And Spicy Rotisserie Chicken And Black Bean Stew

Having a trusty fast-food strategy is the busy person’s key to eating well.

When I’m swamped with work, travel, kids’ activities (or whatever), I quite simply cannot be trusted to choose the healthy meal over the quick one.

Unless, that is, the healthy one is the quick one. Over the years, I have developed a repertoire of healthier fast-food options, dinners I can get on the table in minutes. A standby is, of course, the supermarket rotisserie chicken. Pick up one of those, add a quick spinach salad (by which I mean spinach with red wine vinegar and olive oil sprinkled on it with a handful of almonds and a quick chop of scallions on top), and my family is eating before anyone even has time to ask what’s for dinner.

I also always buy two rotisserie chickens (or roast two chickens when I’m bothering to heat up the house with the oven), so I have leftover chicken seasoned and ready to go for another meal a day or two later.

This week’s chicken and black bean stew is a meal inspired by one of those weeks. The ingredients are all basic, simple stuff I have on hand most of the time (and if not, I can find something to substitute). I use canned chipotles in adobo sauce for tons of flavor and some warm heat (buy it canned, then store it in a freezer bag and just lop off a hunk for recipes as you need it).

Don’t have or like chipotles? You also can use tomato paste and chili powder or whatever other warm spicy item you have in your cupboard (Sriracha? Red pepper flakes? Chipotle powder? All great.). The secret to this quick stew is the chicken already has so much flavor that adding just a little spice and a little acid (the lime juice) makes the flavors taste far more complex than the quick and healthy little dinner gem that this dish is.

Quick And Spicy Rotisserie Chicken And Black Bean Stew Start to finish: 20 minutes Servings: 4

1 tablespoon olive oil 1 small yellow onion, chopped 1 stalk celery, chopped 2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons (or more) chipotles in adobo sauce, finely chopped, sauce included (or tomato paste if no spice is desired) 2 cups low-sodium chicken stock, hot 1½ cups water, hot 15-ounce can black beans, rinsed and drained 1 cup frozen corn kernels, thawed 2 cups shredded chicken from a rotisserie chicken 2 tablespoons lime juice Kosher salt and ground black pepper ∏ large avocado, cubed 1 medium tomato, cubed, seeds removed, or tomato salsa ∏ cup cilantro leaves Lime wedges, to garnish In a large, heavy pot over medium-high, heat the oil. Add the onion, celery and carrots and cook until starting to get tender, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and chipotles, then stir until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the stock, water, beans, corn and chicken and bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 10 minutes.

Stir in the lime juice, then taste and season with salt and pepper. Ladle into 4 serving bowls, then top with avocado, tomato or salsa, and cilantro, and offer lime wedges on the side.

After getting dumped on for most of the month, the Daily Chronicle announced a “Name the Winter ’79” contest, offering cash prizes to the winners.

“Since most everyone is snowed in, you have plenty of time to come up with something,” the announcement on the front page of the Jan. 20, 1979, edition said.

More than 300 entries were submitted. On Jan. 29, DeKalb County’s winter was named “The Incredible Bulk.” Three people suggested that name – Otto Ritchey and Jeff Clapsaddle of Sycamore, and Mrs. Fran Cliffe of DeKalb – and each received a $10 check in the mail.

Up to 23 inches of snow fell in DeKalb from Jan. 12 to 14, Daily Chronicle writer Mike Krey reported Jan. 16, 1979.

Six-foot snowdrifts were reported.

Roofs collapsed under the weight of the snow, including a portion of the General Electric plant roof. That winter, DeKalb Mayor Judy King was granted special snow “powers” to prohibit parking on city streets for snow removal during emergencies.

Notable snowstorms also hit DeKalb County in 1918, ’29, ’30, ’31, ’36, ’39, 2011 and 2015. The two largest snowstorms were Jan. 26 to 27, 1967, and Jan. 1 to 3, 1999, according to the National Weather Service.

While waiting for the predicted snow to fall Tuesday, I found a couple of interesting snowstorm dispatches from over the years: • “For a time it was feared that DeKalb might be without entertainment at its two theaters yesterday.

On Thursday, March 3, more than 400 high school students will overtake the Duke Ellington Ballroom in the Holmes Student Center as participants in the sectional Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) competition.

Students from 47 area high schools, including DeKalb, Sycamore, Genoa-Kingston and Sandwich, will compete in four divisions based on the school’s total enrollment (division 300, division 700, division 1,500, divi-

sion unlimited).

Students will take tests on two separate disciplines from among: biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, math and physics.

The Academic Challenge competition is a series of tests created and administered by Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering and offered to high school students in Illinois and Missouri. The tests are offered by more than 40 community colleges and universities and are designed to present a challenge to the brightest

students. Students compete as individuals and as part of a team.

Questions are presented in multiple-choice format, and students have 40 minutes to complete tests that range in length from 30 questions (computer science) to 100 questions (English).

The Academic Challenge test material is drawn from high school senior and college freshman curricula to present a bridge between secondary and higher education. Tests are written by teams of faculty members at colleges and universities. Each team produces

sets of tests that increase in level of difficulty in a progression from regional, to sectional, to state finals.

Winning scores are rewarded with team trophies and ribbons for first, second and third place in each division. Additionally, each competitor is awarded a medallion for placing first, second or third in their subject matter for each of the four divisions.

Genoa mayor speaks to sixth-grade classes Student wins

DAILY CHRONICLE Genoa Mayor Mark Vicary recently visited Genoa-Kingston Middle School to speak with two classes of sixthgrade students about his role as mayor of Genoa and what the duties include.

GKMS has a class that all sixthgrade students attend for a six-week rotation called LCS, which stands for Leadership and Community Service.

During the rotation they learn about effective communication skills, qualities needed to be a good leader, and ways students can get involved in community service-related activities that will promote volunteering at a young age.

Mayor Vicary talked about items that he and the council want to get done in Genoa, the businesses they have written to asking to come be a part of Genoa and what the city needs.

He asked the students to come up with ideas and suggestions for change or improvements around Genoa that they would like to see happen. Getting a Taco Bell was the No. 1 choice, with a

Kingston community to speak with students about the challenges they face in their jobs.

Corin Brim, an eighth-grade student at Clinton Rosette Middle School, won first place in the school’s 2016 National Geographic Geography Bee. Other students who competed were Daymon Alvarado, Gabrielle Elmer and Marina Fraizer, who received the title of runner-up. During the Corin Brim bee, each student was asked a series of questions related to geography.

As school champion, Brim will take a written test that will determine his eligibility to move on to the state round of competition. If selected to participate, he will compete in the State Bee on April 1 at College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn. State winners will advance to the National Championship May 22 to 25 in Washington, D.C.

Information about Zika virus Dear Readers: Not surprisingly, we’ve been getting lots of letters about the Zika virus. In today’s column, I’d like to answer the questions many readers are asking.

• Where did Zika virus come from? Zika virus has been present for centuries in Africa. About 50 years ago, it spread to Asia. So far as we know, it arrived in the Americas (primarily Brazil) only last year. That means the vast majority of us in the Western Hemisphere have no immunity against it.

• How does it spread? The virus is carried by mosquitoes, primarily one called Aedes aegypti. They pick up the virus when they bite a person who is infected with it. They spread it to other people when they bite those people.

It is not clear if it can be spread directly from one person to another, as the influenza virus is spread when someone near you coughs, for example. There are a few cases in which the virus might have been spread by sex, but this appears to be very unusual.

• What is the danger from catching this virus? That depends on who you are. Most of us, even those of us in the Americas, don’t have any symptoms when we catch it. Some of us get aching joints, red eyes, fever and a rash, but it’s a mild, flu-like illness that typically lasts less than a week. Infection with the virus also infrequently may cause a nervous system disease in adults called Guillain-Barre.

But if you are a woman who is, might be or might soon become pregnant, there is reason to worry. There is strong evidence from Brazil when pregnant women catch the virus, there is a risk their babies will be born with birth defects.

aly – small heads and brains. (Several other infections also can cause this tragic complication of pregnancy.) Defects of vision and hearing also may occur.

• Can I be tested for this virus? Currently, only very specialized laboratories, such as those at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, can test accurately for the virus. Also, the tests are not perfectly accurate: They can both under-diagnose and over-diagnose the infection.

• Are there treatments for the virus? As of now, there are no treatments and no vaccines to prevent people from becoming infected. As you might expect, scientists all over the world are working to develop treatments and vaccines.

• Has the virus come to the United States and Canada? So far, there have been only a few cases of Zika virus infection among people in the U.S. and Canada, and they all caught the infection in a country south of the U.S. The virus would become a serious threat to the U.S. and Canada only if it was carried by mosquitoes in those countries. So far, that has not happened.

• What should I do to protect myself?

In tomorrow’s column, I’ll address that question. I’ll also talk about how we can better protect ourselves against other potential epidemics that might strike us.

Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY My fiancée and I have known each Jeanne other since high Phillips school. I was the “good kid” with honors and the right parents. She was considered trouble and didn’t have the best home life.

Rumor had it she moonlighted as a stripper our senior year, but I always blew it off as false.

Fast-forward 12 years: I ran into her recently, and we decided to have dinner. I fell in love with her on that date. A few months went by, and I mentioned the rumors. She wasn’t upset and matter-of-factly explained she did start stripping in high school and continued through college. It bothered me, but the benefits of being with her far outweighed the negatives.

Now that we are engaged, she told me she had to “come clean.” She said there were times in college when she had sex with some of her regular clients. I am floored. She basically admitted she had prostituted herself. I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to blame her for her past indiscretions, but this is a big deal. I don’t know how to let it go.
