More neutral image would have been better Some people questioned our decision to use a photo of Bernie Sanders’ campaign signs on Tuesday’s front page on the day of an election.

The cover photo, along with others from an event in support of Sanders, accompanied a story on who local people were backing in the upcoming presidential primary. The story included supporters of both Sanders and Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, as well as Republican voters.

But some readers said the photos, which were shot during a local campaign event for Sanders that took place Friday evening at The House Café, made it look as though we were backing Bernie.

That’s fair criticism. We could have used a more neutral image on the cover.

When it came to scenes of actual politicking, our choices were somewhat limited – Sanders was the only presidential candidate we were aware of who had a local event in the run-up to the vote, and he seemed to have the most active campaign at the local level.

The young man who knocked on my door canvassing for Sanders on Tuesday was the first person I’ve met in a long time who was working for a national campaign in my neighborhood.

All the local effort and enthusiasm might have helped: Sanders wound up taking 66 per-

Contractors visit University Village property to bid on planned renovation

DeKALB – Contractors were inspecting buildings Wednesday at the University Village complex to bid on repair work, but it likely will be more than a year before residents see improvements.

Six months after the DeKalb City Council approved a zoning change to pave the way for Seattle-based development company Security Properties Inc. to take ownership of the property, the company has yet to close on the sale, Security Properties representatives said.

Company officials are working on a redevelopment plan for the 32-acre, 534-unit housing complex off North Annie Glidden Road, and it will likely take awhile to get through everything, officials said.

“We’re still proceeding toward closing,” Managing Director Bryon Gongaware said. “Everything is still in process and it’s going as expected.”

Gongaware declined to comment on any further details.

Roofers, plumbers and general contractors were out Wednesday checking out the project so their companies could offer bids.

Craig Powers, a senior estimator with Weis Builders, a Minneapolis-based general contracting company, was on-site and said Weis plans to put together a bid package for the project.

“Right now, we are still negotiating,” he said.

Resident Dominique Warner said it was the first time in a few months that she had seen people out taking measurements and looking around.

Warner said she hoped that things would change while she is still living in the complex. She added that management has been fairly responsive to any issues.

“I mean, my apartment has been good,” she said. “Everything is pretty OK here.”

DeKalb rezoned the property last fall, after months of heated debated and legal issues including a state investigation on a reported bribe and a lawsuit against the city questioning the validity of the deciding vote at its first reading. The property had to be rezoned because it didn’t conform to current municipal code, which meant if it were destroyed in a natural disas-

Security Properties has proposed a $21 million redevelopment for the complex, which is home to about 1,300 people, most of whom receive some government housing assistance.

The company plans to keep the property low-income housing and wants to use federal tax credits to finance the redevelopment.

Under terms of the agreement, the property can’t be rezoned again for another 20 years without approval from both the owner and the city of DeKalb, Illinois Housing Development Authority records show.

SYCAMORE – Bond was set Wednesday for a man police said entered the Holmes Student Center on Monday wearing a mask and carrying a gun, and shortly after tried to shoot another man outside the building.

Malique Cunningham, 20, of DeKalb faces charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm and mob action. Aggravated discharge of a firearm is a Class X felony, meaning Cunningham could be sentenced to Malique from six to 30 years in Cunningham prison if he is convicted.

DeKalb County Judge Philip Montgomery set Cunningham’s bond at $750,000 Wednesday. He must post $75,000 bail to Devon A. be released from the Williams DeKalb County Jail, where he remained Wednesday.

Laughing as he appeared on camera for Wednesday’s court proceeding, Cunningham told Montgomery Devonte he had been homeless Thomas for the past few years and had no money he could post for bond.

Although Cunningham does not have a home of his own, he might have been staying with friends or family in the 900 block of Crane Drive and the 300 block of Wirtz Drive in DeKalb, court records show.

According to court records, the incident started about 9:14 p.m. Monday inside Northern Illinois University’s Holmes Student Center, where Cunningham and two other men began to

argue with someone in the lobby.

The two men who were with Cunningham, Devon Williams, 22, of the 200 block of Monroe Avenue, Chicago, and Devonte Thomas, 19, of the 400 block of Hillcrest Drive, DeKalb, each faces charges of mob action and reckless discharge of a firearm. Both offenses are punishable by from one to three years in prison.

Thomas, Williams and Cunningham went to the student center with the intention of fighting the man, who they found and confronted in the lobby. They tried to lure him outside, but when he refused, Cunningham left the building, court records show.

He returned about five minutes later wearing a black ski mask and concealing a gun, NIU Police Chief Tom Phillips said. Upon noticing the mask and Cunningham’s pistol, bystanders fled.

“Some of the witnesses did see him, or he pointed toward his waistband that he has his gun,” Phillips said.

Although Williams and Thomas began to run away, Cunningham followed the crowd outside and shot in the direction of the man he tried to fight earlier.

Police later found a single 9 mm shell casing on the sidewalk outside the student center, court records show.

All three men were arrested in DeKalb County within four hours of the incident, Phillips said.

NIU is on spring break this week, so most students are not on campus; none of the three men arrested was affiliated with the university, officials have said.

Williams’ bond was set at $1,500 in court Wednesday. He must post $150 bail to be released.

Thomas’ bail was $3,000. He must post $300 bail to be released. Each of the men is due back in court April 15.

Cunningham also must appear Wednesday for a status hearing.

browland@shawmedia.com WATERMAN – Voters approved a 1 percentage point increase in the sales tax rate in the village Tuesday as part of plan to raise more money to pay for local government services.

Residents overwhelming approved the sales tax proposition at the ballot box, according to unofficial results.

Of the 395 total votes tallied on the measure Tuesday night, 262 were in favor and 133 were opposed. Supporters outnumbered opponents 2-to-1 at the ballot box.

“I think it’s wonderful. I’m grateful to the people of Waterman. They understood the need for this,” Village President Thomas Ekle said Tuesday night.

“If this had not passed, we would still need to seek some way to increase reve-

nue – all of the alternatives would have been more of a burden.”

The additional tax dollars will be used to pay for services such as snow plowing, police and leaf pickup, Ekle said.

“I’m really pleased the majority of citizens trusted us to have the welfare of everyone in mind,” he said.

The measure increases the village’s sales tax rate from 6.25 percent to 7.25 percent on items such as prepared food, soft drinks and candy, personal hygiene products and auto parts. Items including prescriptions, groceries, and medical appliances are subject to a reduced rate.

The increase is expected to generate about $80,000 annually.

Waterman had to get residents’ approval, via referendum, to increase the sales tax rate because the village isn’t home rule. Trustees and Ekle had said additional tax dollars were needed after a grain business left the area, state aid decreased over the years and expenses climbed.

They said that bumping the sales tax up was more palatable than trying to raise property taxes.

After 26 years of service, Chuck’s Auto Center will be closing its service doors on March 25, 2016 at 6:00 pm. It has been an honor to have owned a business in such a caring community.

The roofing company would be a subcontractor hired by Weis, if its bid is accepted. “[The general contractor] is still in negotiations,” Reeb said, “It’s a $5 million siding project.”

Security Properties officials estimated the roof and siding work would cost a little less than $3 million, documents show.

The company will buy the property from the current owners, Jeffery Crane, Donna Chudacoff and Jon Mickelson, for more than $37 million, federal records show. Residents must be notified when the transaction takes place, under the terms of the closing agreement. The company must also secure federal funding before the transaction is complete, under terms of the agreement.

In email correspondence in October, Steve TeSelle, investment manager with Security Properties, told the University Village tenants association and city officials that closing was expected in mid-2016,

records show.

The tenants association had expressed concern over whether or not they would be included in discussion on allocation of social services.

“Contributions for social services are not made until Security Properties’ acquisition of the property has closed,” TeSelle wrote. “Closing is not expected to occur until mid-2016, so the funds will not be available, or expended, before that time.”

Ellen Divita, the city’s community development director, said the city would complete apartment walkthroughs to identify problems and what improvements might require building permits when construction was on the horizon.

“It’s going to take them 18 months to get through everything,” she said.

“We’ll do it while it’s fresh.”

She added that tenants should be aware that if they have a safety issue with their rented housing or if landlords aren’t complying with lease terms or not responding to safety concerns, they could contact the city.

Willis and O’Barski had been high school sweethearts, but had parted ways for years. They reunited and married in May 2013, she said.

As his health deteriorated, Willis said she would drive her husband to County Board meetings and sit in on them. It was during those times, she said, she would pay attention to proceedings and issues that came up, to learn – and take interest – in county government.

“Seeing Frank on the County Board ... certainly got me interested in the role that it plays in local politics,” Willis said.

“And very much like him, I felt like I could make a contribution.”

The retired Northern Illinois University physics professor said she is looking forward to possibly joining the board’s highway committee.

“I like to think that I think analytically about things. I’m comfortable with numbers, so budget numbers and things like that don’t phase me,” she said. “I’ve dealt with people from all walks of life just about ... and so I think I have the ability to get along with a variety of people.”

Her appointment runs through November and she would have to get on the ballot to be elected to the position in the Nov. 8 general election.

Voters would have to decide if she would carry out the remainder of O’Barski’s term, which expires in 2018.

SYCAMORE – Suzanne Willis got right down to business Wednesday on the County Board, the same night her appointment to fill her late husband’s seat was approved and she was sworn in by the county clerk.

“I know a number of people on the board, and I’ve been involved with local politics – more peripherally – for quite some time,” Willis said about her interest in taking a seat on the County Board. “I felt like I could make a Suzanne contribution.”

Willis Willis, 64, steps in after her husband, Frank O’Barski, died Feb. 9 after recurring battles with cancer. He was 69.

There were no objections to her appointment by any board members Wednesday.

DeKalb County Clerk Doug Johnson administered the oath of office to Willis, and she took a seat, literally, as the official Democratic 10th District representative.

Democrats selected Willis, calling her an obvious choice, and believing she will carry the same passion for the job that they laud her late husband for having.

County Board members noted that O’Barski would attend County Board meetings immediately after chemotherapy sessions.

DeKalb Park Board to mull appointing interim leader

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The DeKalb Park District Board of Commissioners will consider appointing an interim leader at a meeting today.

The board put Executive Director Jason Mangum on administrative leave Feb. 24, but members haven’t made a final decision on whether to fire the director.

It’s not clear if the board will make that decision today.

The agenda for the meeting indicates the board could vote on an “employee settlement agreement,” but

provides no further detail about the agreement.

The Daily Chronicle requested a copy of the settlement agreement Wednesday.

Park District Facility and Marketing Supervisor Scott deOliveira said the agreement and other board materials weren’t immediately available Wednesday.

The board will meet at 6 p.m. for a study session at the Hopkins Park Community Center Administrative Office, 1403 Sycamore Road, DeKalb.

The regular board meeting will follow a public hearing on the district’s budget at 7 p.m.

Judge wants review of Hastert’s medical records

CHICAGO – A judge overseeing Dennis Hastert’s hush-money case on Wednesday ordered an independent review of the former U.S. House speaker’s medical records, a move that follows a delay in Hastert’s sentencing after his lawyers said he had nearly died and remained in poor health.

The three-sentence order filed by Judge Thomas M. Durkin in U.S. District Court in Chicago doesn’t explain the need for an expert to “provide an independent report to the court on the defendant’s medical condition,” including whether the judge might doubt the severity of Hastert’s illness as described

by defense lawyers.

Hastert pleaded guilty on Oct. 28 to violating bank laws in seeking to pay someone $3.5 million in hush money.

In his plea agreement, the 74-year-old Republican acknowledged he sought to pay someone to hide his misconduct against that person dating back decades to around the time he was a high school wrestling coach. The Associated Press and other media outlets, citing anonymous sources, have reported that Hastert wanted to hide claims that he sexually molested someone.

CHICAGO – Illinois voters got an early taste of what’s expected to be one of the hardest-fought U.S. Senate races in the country, with Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk accusing U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth of “repeatedly failing to protect” veterans in her care and the Democrat countering that Kirk has

embraced GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump’s “fear mongering.”

The remarks after Tuesday night’s primary victories for both candidates previewed a race that Democrats see as key to their efforts to retake control of the U.S. Senate. Prosecutor ousted in vote focused on police shooting

CHICAGO – Voters ousted the Chicago area’s top prosecutor Tuesday, backing Democratic primary challenger Kim Foxx in a campaign dominated by questions about Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez’s handling of the shooting death of a black teenager at the hands of a white police officer.

Foxx, a onetime chief of staff to the County Board president, was among the strongest critics of Alvarez over the

Laquan McDonald shooting. The teenager was shot 16 times in 2014, an incident captured on squad-car video. Alvarez charged the officer with murder, but not until November, more than a year after the incident and after a judge ordered city officials to release the tape publicly.

City removes sales tax on tampons, sanitary napkins

CHICAGO – The Chicago City Council has rescinded a city sales tax on tampons and sanitary napkins.

Wednesday’s vote followed a recommendation that was made without opposition by the City Council’s finance committee last week. The items are taxed 10.25 percent in Chicago. The vote will remove Chicago’s portion of that tax, or 1.25 percent. Supporters say the measure corrects an unfairness to women.

Tampons and sanitary napkins are now characterized as medical necessities to be exempted.

CHICAGO – Illinois Democrats and their union allies celebrated victories in two expensive state legislative races Tuesday, saying the triumph of pro-labor candidates were blows to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s efforts to weaken unions.

Union-backed candidate Juliana Stratton trounced Chicago Democratic state Rep. Ken Dunkin, who was targeted by his party after he aligned himself with Rauner by voting against pro-labor legislation. In central Illinois, Republican Sen. Sam McCann defeated Bryce Benton, who challenged McCann for voting with Democrats on a union bill.

“We think all of these races were a rebuke of the governor and his attempt to attack working families and to destroy unions,” said Greg Kelley, executive vice president for the Service Employees International Union representing health care workers in Illinois.

Money spent on the races by candidates and groups supporting them exceeded $10 million combined – a staggering amount for state legislative primaries that were not going to alter control of the Legislature. Even President Barack Obama weighed in,

“Voters in the Democratic primary election made it very clear they want representatives in the state Capitol who will stand up for middle-class families, children and the elderly, not turn their backs on them,” Madigan said in a statement Wednesday.

Rauner spokesman Lance Trover took a swipe at Obama’s involvement in a race to “defeat one legislator who dared to show a hint of independent thinking,” and then bashed Madigan.

“But the primary elections are over and rather than issuing partisan press releases, the speaker needs to end his monthlong vacation and begin working with the governor to enact a balanced budget alongside structural reforms that grow our economy,” Trover said in a statement.

President nominates Garland to high court

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama nominated appeals court judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court on Wednesday, thrusting a respected moderate jurist and former prosecutor into the center of an election-year clash over the future of the nation’s highest court.

Obama cast the 63-year-old Garland as “a serious man and an exemplary judge” deserving of a full hearing and a Senate confirmation vote, despite Republican vows to deny him both. Standing in the White House Rose Garden with Garland, Obama argued the integrity of the court was at stake and appealed to the Senate to “play it straight” in filling the seat left vacant by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.

“It’s supposed to be above politics,” Obama said of the high court. “It has to be. And it should stay that way.”

Republican leaders, however, held to their refusal to consider any nominee, saying the seat should be filled by the next president after this year’s election. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell spoke with Garland by phone but did not change his position that “the American people will have a voice.” He said he would not be holding “a perfunctory meeting but he wished Judge Garland well,” a spokesman said.

Others in the GOP ranks were less wedded to the no-hearing, no-vote, not-even-a-meeting

stance – a sign that Republicans are aware the strategy could leave them branded as obstructionist.

Unlike McConnell, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley said he is open to meeting with Garland in the coming weeks, as did five other Republican senators – Rob Portman of Ohio, Jeff Flake of Arizona, Susan Collins of Maine, James Inhofe of Oklahoma and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire. Scheduling courtesy meetings is a long way from securing a full hearing, much less winning the 60 votes needed for confirmation. Still, the White House seized the comments as evidence Garland’s weighty resume and bipartisan credentials were putting pressure on Republicans.

Garland, 63, is the chief judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, a court whose influence over federal policy and national security matters has made it a proving ground for potential justices.

A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, Garland has clerked for two appointees of Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower – the liberal Justice William Brennan Jr. as well as Judge Henry J. Friendly, for whom Chief Justice John Roberts also clerked.

Putin’s brazen victory in Syria Vladimir Putin once again appears to have surprised the Obama administration, this time with an abrupt announcement of a military withdrawal from Syria.

As in several previous instances – his seizure of Crimea and incursion into eastern Ukraine, for example – the White House was caught flat-footed because it deluded itself about Putin’s goals and his chances of success.

President Barack Obama derided the Russian leap into the war in September as the prelude to a “quagmire,” just as he proclaimed that the annexation of Crimea and invasion of the Donetsk region would be self-defeating. Yet in Syria, Putin has accomplished quite a lot, and his gains have come at the expense of U.S. interests and of Obama’s stated goals in the region.

Moscow’s most obvious achievement has been to reverse the course of the civil war. The regime of Bashar al-Assad, which was reeling last summer, now has a clear upper hand over U.S.-backed rebels. By the Russian account, regime forces have regained control over 400 towns and almost 4,000 square miles of territory; they have cut off the main supply line to the rebel-controlled districts of Aleppo, the country’s largest city. The cease-fire negotiated by Putin’s foreign minister with Secretary of State John F. Kerry could lock those gains into place – and government forces have continued to attack key areas during the cease-fire, without consequence.

More broadly, Putin has succeeded in re-establishing Russia as a power in the Middle East. The United States has been obliged to accept Russia as a co-equal in brokering the ceasefire and a new round of peace talks, and has swallowed Putin’s terms – including setting aside a demand that Assad give up power in the near future.

Having shattered the Kremlin’s diplomatic isolation after the Ukraine invasion and established himself as a key player in determining whether the flow of Syrian refugees to Europe will continue, Putin is positioned to seek the lifting of European Union sanctions on his regime.

U.S. officials argue that the cease-fire has brought relief to millions of Syrians, as violence has declined and relief convoys have reached besieged areas. But the humanitarian costs of Russia’s intervention also have been heavy. Human-rights groups and other independent observers have charged Russia with deliberately targeting hospitals and food stores and dropping cluster munitions that killed hundreds, if not thousands, of civilians.

The withdrawal may suck some wind from the sails of Assad, who has been ostentatiously promising to reconquer all of Syria. That, too, suits Putin. Syria could best serve his interests as a frozen conflict, where Russia can protect its strategic position in a divided country and exercise a veto over any permanent solution, while avoiding a long-term military commitment.

The United States and its allies will be left to carry on the fight against the Islamic State, which will be made considerably more difficult by the Assad regime’s survival. Thanks to Putin’s intervention, and the United States’ befuddled response to the Syrian crisis, it is not he but Obama who is left facing a quagmire.

A fair way to choose a Republican nominee

Republicans have been talking about changing the rules for picking a presidential nominee at their national convention in Cleveland in July. Their best bet may be to go bold.

Right now, their options do not look good. Let’s assume that Donald Trump finishes the primaries with more delegates than any other candidate, but not a majority, and Sen. Ted Cruz comes in second.

Trump is already arguing that having the most delegates entitles him to the nomination, and his sympathizers are saying that any other result would amount to stealing it from him. But a very large fraction of the party is still bitterly opposed to him, and seems likely to fight to keep him from getting a majority.

Deny him the nomination when he has a plurality, however, and many of his supporters will see treachery – especially if the nomination goes to someone else after convention politicking.

And who should that someone else be?

Someone who got fewer votes and fewer delegates than he did? Or someone who got no votes, because he did not even run?

When people suggest that the convention should pick someone who didn’t run, they typically have Mitt Romney or Paul Ryan in mind. They are both well-known, enjoy respect from a lot of Republicans, and could raise the money a campaign would require. But nominating Romney would mean picking

accusations of dirty tricks – for each delegate to make his or her rank orderings public immediately after the vote.

It’s a process that would generate a majority for a candidate automatically: There would no need for multiple ballots, and thus no politicking between rounds of voting. The process would also be formally neutral. My guess is that most of the delegates who are not pledged to either Trump or Cruz will prefer the senator to the billionaire, and so the process will work to Cruz’s advantage.

Whoever lost the nomination contest would have no legitimate complaint with this process, which would be entirely above-board. Supporters of the losing candidate would, of course, still be able to withhold their votes from the nominee in the fall, by voting for a third-party candidate, or voting for the Democratic nominee, or just staying home. But they would have no grounds for arguing that the nomination had been stolen.

Republicans have no way to guarantee that they will have a nominee who has the support of the vast majority of party members, let alone one who has a good chance of winning in November.

But this procedure may be the party’s best bet for making it out of Cleveland alive.

Anticipating the effects of overtime – over time

By VERONIQUE de RUGY Wouldn’t it be nice if your boss were forced to pay you more because the government said so?

Not if – as the result of the government’s intervention – you lost your job, saw your salary reduced or couldn’t work from home anymore. Yet that’s what the Obama administration is trying to do by requiring that employers pay overtime for salaried employees who earn less than $50,440 per year.

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, most employers must pay timeand-a-half for overtime hours (usually understood as hours worked above and beyond 40 hours per week) for salaried employees who don’t have sufficiently advanced job duties or make less than $23,660 annually. Employers only have to track the hours of salaried employees eligible for overtime.

Under the new rules, the salary threshold would be raised to $50,440 – and employers would track the hours of

salaried employees making less.

The underlying assumption behind the proposed rules is that employers are forcing their employees to work long hours without paying them appropriately. Increasing the salary threshold, the administration claims, would force employers to dish out higher pay to their employees, hire new workers or give part-time ones longer hours rather than overwork their current workforce.

According to the administration, this mandatory overtime pay would increase the earnings of about 5 million workers.

As they say, the road to [heck] is paved with good intentions. With these proposed rules, the administration just added a few more bricks on that already-long road. For one thing, it fails to demonstrate that there is indeed a rampant problem of underpayment and overwork in our labor force. But even if there were a problem, this would hardly be the way to address it.

I have never understood how anyone can believe that forcing employers to

pay employees more could lead to more hiring and more available hours for employees. After all, labor is like every other good or service. If you raise its price, over time the demand will go down.

In a paper about the proposed rules, Heritage Foundation labor economist James Sherk reviews the literature on the economic impact of expanding overtime coverage and finds that “employers largely respond to new overtime requirements by cutting base pay – leaving total hours and earnings little changed.”

This isn’t surprising unless you think most firms are sitting on lots of unused cash that they could easily use to pay overtime.

Few firms have this luxury, which means that the only way for businesses to meet the proposed requirements in the short term would be to shift resources around or reduce their profits.

Over time, companies would find ways to offset these new costs. They might reduce the hours employees work so fewer of them work over 40 hours a

week.

In the longer run, employers could reduce the base wages so that total compensation (base wages plus overtime pay) would be the same as before the implementation of the new rule.

Unfortunately, while employees would be unlikely to see their earnings go up, the loss of flexibility in the workplace might be dearly felt. Sherk notes that the rules would “severely limit (workers’) use of the flexible work arrangements and telecommuting options that many rely on to balance their work and family lives.”

At a time when the sharing economy and nontraditional forms of work are expanding thanks to new technology and innovation, these proposed rules attempt to force everyone back into an old and outdated one-size-fits-all model.

So much for good intentions.

New pitcher, coach only major changes

Knights to open season with 8 starters back

ecarifio@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Not a lot will be different for the Kaneland softball team when the Knights open their season today at Burlington Central, with eight starters back from a year ago.

Although the two changes for the Knights, who took third in Class 3A last year, are big ones. The Knights will start the new season without pitcher Angie Morrow, and with a new coach – Mike Kuefler.

“All of these girls are still hungry and every one of them still has that common goal,” Kuefler said. “Enough of them tasted that trip downstate last year that even for the newcomers, they understand what these girls want to do.”

Kuefler, whose daughter Paige Kuefler was a starter for the Knights last year, said he’s not looking to Kaneland pitcher Courtney Davis delivers a change much about what the team pitch Thursday during a scrimmage. does. He’s coached traveling teams for the past 10 years, five as a head coach.

Three of the current Knights, he said, have played for his travel team at one point.

The other change will be in the circle, where Courtney Davis takes over for Morrow – who went 15-2 with a 1.34 ERA with 140 strikeouts in 110 innings.

“It’s definitely going to be a lot of work, and we have a large game schedule, so it will be a lot of games,” Davis said. “There’s a little nerves but I’m excited mostly.”

While Paige Kuefler led the Knights in batting average last year, Meg Cohrs led them with 10 home runs, 38 RBIs and a 1.526 OPS while hitting .443 as the team’s third baseman.

“She’s nonstop bat,” Mike Kuefler said of Cohrs. “We’ve leaned on her Mike Kuefler for three years now, we’re looking forKaneland softball coach ward to that fourth one.”

Cohrs said this year’s Knights squad is capable of matching the run of last year’s team.

It was a strong game offensively for the Barbs, who finished with 13 hits.

Four players had two or more hits, including junior center fielder Derek Kyler, who went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and three stolen bases as the Barbs’ No. 8 hitter. Senior right fielder Daniel Garcia reached base four times, going 2 for 3 with an RBI and was hit by a pitch twice.

Senior third baseman Joey Sauser was 2 for 5 with a double and made an excellent play in which he dove for a groundball and threw it across the diamond for the out. Senior catcher Nick Nunez was 2 for 3 and scored twice, including after hitting a triple in the second inning.

In the top of the fifth inning, junior left fielder Jake Neidel came up with an RBI single and later stole second base.

However, the throw from the catcher was in the dirt and the ball bounced and hit Neidel in the mouth, causing a gash on his upper lip that ended his day.

done by committee, Carpenter said, with Morey, Parks, Ally Versluys, Cristen Nottingham and Izzy Odom to all see time in the circle early this year.

The lowdown: Eight starters are back for the Knights – but the two losses are the starting pitcher and the leader in batting average. With so much strength still back, Kuefler said he expects another good season in his first at the helm of the Knights – Kaneland athletic director Peter Goff coached the team last year on an interim basis.

SANDWICH – The DeKalb baseball team was an out away from winning its season opener.

Instead, the Barbs started the season with a heartbreaking loss.

DeKalb squandered a four-run lead in the seventh inning and lost 9-8 in eight innings at Sandwich on a windy Wednesday afternoon.

“We had every emotion in the world,” DeKalb coach Justin Keck said. “We were flying high and feeling good about ourselves. We made a few mistakes, pitching-wise – walked a batter, hung some pitches and they hit it. It didn’t go our way. We have some things we need to clean up. Obviously, there was some things we did well, but there are some things we need to fix.”

The Barbs (0-1) held an 8-4 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, but Sandwich’s Justin Sartori hit an RBI triple and Jake Roop hit a three-run home run off DeKalb reliever Ian Panke with two outs to tie it. A strong wind blowing to the outfield, which blew the hat off Sandwich reliever Alex Burgin three times in

Kyler took the loss after allowing the game-winning run to score on a bases loaded infield single by Sartori in the bottom of the eighth.

The Barbs actually had a chance to take the lead in the top of the eighth after Garcia hit a one-out single and Sauser followed with a double to right field.

However, Sartori struck out Jacob Perkins and Nunez to escape the jam.

“You hate to lose a game like this – you don’t want to lose any game – but the good news is it’s early in the season, so we have the opportunity to learn from it,” Keck said.

DeKalb looks to bounce back on Thursday, when it plays at Elgin at 4:30 p.m.

Huskies sending 4 to NCAA Championships

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The Northern Illinois wrestling team is sending four wrestlers to the Big Apple.

The Huskies are a part of the first NCAA Wrestling Championships to be held in the iconic Madison Square Garden, which begins at noon today.

“It’s a worldwide Mecca (of sports), so we’re excited to be a part of it,” Northern Illinois coach Ryan Ludwig said of wrestling at Madison Square Garden.

It is the first time that the Huskies have sent four wrestlers to the NCAA Championships since 2007. Coming into the MAC tournament as the No. 7 seed, Austin Eicher (133) won three straight matches to be crowned the conference champion and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.

Redshirt freshman Steve Bleise (141), senior Andrew Morse (157) and redshirt junior Shawn Scott (197) are also participating for the Huskies.

For Scott, it’s the second consecutive year he’s made the tournament.

Last season, he was the lone member of the team to head to the NCAA Championships.

“It’s a lot different. Last year was really nerve-wracking,” Scott said. “Going into the tournament is bad because you know you have to fulfill those expectations. To share the moment with a group of guys is nice, because we’ve gone through the same thing all year.

We can keep each other in a positive outlook on the tournament.”

Last season, Scott lost his first two matches to be eliminated after the first day. Ludwig said he noticed a difference in Scott (27-8 this season) coming into Thursday’s matches.

“He’s definitely more focused,” Ludwig said. “Last year, looking back at his performance, he was a tourist. This year, he’s much more focused on the competition and leaves all the festivi-

Eicher (19-11 this season) said he’s been talking with Scott about the experience and what to expect on the biggest stage.

“Everything sounds pretty cool right now,” Eicher laughed.

Eicher was the only wrestler to be seeded No. 7 or lower to make his way through the MAC tournament.

He pinned Ohio’s Cameron Kelly in his first match, won via injury against Eastern Michigan’s Shayne Wireman and won a thrilling 3-1 match over Central Michigan’s Corey Keener in the first round of sudden victory.

Stage Coach Players’ ‘Mary Poppins’ a sold-out success

udiences can prepare to be dazzled at the new Stage Coach production, “Mary Poppins” – at least the lucky ones who bought tickets before it sold out.

This is the first time the Stage Coach Players have tackled the iconic musical and it’s going well so far, which has been rewarding for the 72 cast members and 47 crew members and musicians, director Jan Kuntz said.

“It’s a big name show and it’s a family show,” she said. “I think that is probably part of [the success]. I do think we are also building up a reputation here at the theater. People know that we do quality shows.”

The show is based on the iconic story of “Mary Poppins.” The 1930s book series inspired the 1964 film and the play script only recently became available to community theaters, Kuntz said.

The special effects and live music are part of what makes the show engaging. Set designer Wendy Tritt said the set was one of the more challenging designs she has worked with. There are more than 25 set changes in the play, she said.

“The set is a labor of love. Being on stage is just love,” she said. “It’s fun to pretend and to become other people and – in musicals – sing, dance and have a great time.”

Cameron Harms, who plays the part of Bert in the play, has been in numerous Stage Coach shows including the recent production of “Miracle on 34th Street.”

“As much as it’s fun for me to do straight plays, there is something worthwhile about all the fun stuff you can do in a musical,” Harms said.

NIU Steelband to perform at Kish Hospital fundraiser DAILY CHRONICLE The Northern Illinois University Steelband will present the second annual Benefit Concert for the Cardiac Rehabbers at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 3, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 26555 Brickville Road in Sycamore.

The concert is a fundraiser for Kishwaukee Hospital Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, hosted by the Cardiac-Pulmonary Rehabbers Support Fund, which assists cardiac rehab patients in financial need.

The group seeks to provide those who face financial challenges with access to a structured, medically monitored program after insurance coverage ceases.

The Cardiac Rehabbers have received support from the KishHealth System Foundation, Trivent, the Mary F. Stevens Concert and Lecture Fund,

and private donors to stage this event.

Tickets cost $20 per person and will be available at the door or from any cardiac rehab member, and from The Lincoln Inn. Tickets also can be purchased by calling Alberta DeQuin at 815-758-7265 or Joanne Dillman at 815-758-0229.

The NIU Steelband was the first active steel band formed at an American university and has performed throughout the United States and around the world. In 2016, band director Liam Teague was invited to participate in the World Steelband Festival in Trinidad and was in one of the top 10 bands out of more than 200 bands. The band has received many other awards.

The band is directed by Teague and Clifford Alexis and has been in existence since it was founded by G. Allen O’Conner in 1973.

Beth Fowler School of Dance will host a free trial day Sunday at the Genoa and St. Charles studios for all boys ages 4 and older to see if they are interested in performing in the school’s “West Side Story” production.

Sunday will be an opportunity for boys to watch a video of what they would be doing, and to learn some of the choreography. The boys can let the school know at the end of the evening if they’re interested in joining the production.

The boys also will learn how to stretch as well as the choreography.

In the past, high school coaches have said they noticed a great improvement in boys who participated in a production. The program is free. Rehearsals are required once a week.

There are cleverly choreographed fight scenes through dance to the dramatic “West Side Story” music from the motion picture starring Natalie Wood. The story opens with a flashback to when the boys and girls were younger. This opens up the opportunity for boys (and girls) of all ages.

DAILY CHRONICLE The Homegrown: Bluegrass and Homestead Gathering will return to Stonehouse Farm over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

The second annual gathering on July 1 through 3 will include bluegrass music, homesteading workshops, camping and the outdoors, evening fireworks, a kids’ camp, a special farm-to-table dinner, and a shared connection to the land.

Blood pressure treatment changes Dear Dr. K: A few months ago, I read results from a big trial were going to change blood pressure treatment goals. Where do things stand now?

Dear Reader: I’ll bet you’re referring to SPRINT. In September 2015, the National Institutes of Health (which funded the study) reported the study had been stopped earlier than planned because its results were clear.

Recently, the complete report of the study (called SPRINT) was published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

SPRINT researchers examined whether a lower systolic blood pressure (the top number) target of 120 or less would be better than a target of 140 in patients with hypertension (high blood pressure). To do so, they recruited 9,361 patients who were at increased risk for cardiovascular disease and who had a systolic blood pressure of 130 or higher. They randomly assigned them to either standard treatment or to intense treatment.

Standard treatment meant using medicines to drive down systolic blood pressure to less than 140. Intense treatment meant driving down systolic blood pressure to less than 120. Compared with people who received standard treatment, those who got intense treatment had: • 25 percent fewer cardiovascular complications: fewer heart attacks, episodes of heart failure and strokes; • 27 percent reduction in the risk of death.

Study participants in the intense treatment group needed three medications, on average, instead of two, to achieve lower systolic blood pressure. Not surprisingly, this resulted in more side effects, such as blood pressure that was too low, fainting and temporary kidney failure.

Also, the results might not apply to everyone at increased cardiovascular risk who has high blood pressure. For example, patients with diabetes, heart failure, a previous

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff stroke or who were younger than 50 were not enrolled in the trial. Those with a very high blood pressure (systolic of 180 or greater) also were excluded from the study.

High blood pressure often doesn’t produce symptoms. Many people who have hypertension don’t even know it. If you don’t know your blood pressure, this trial should prompt you to find out.

If you already have high blood pressure, make an appointment to see your doctor.

Together, you should decide if you need more aggressive blood pressure management.

Patients sometimes ask me why doctors keep treating high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other health risk factors more aggressively. They wonder if maybe the drug companies are pushing doctors to prescribe more drugs.

It surely is true over the years doctors have been using medicines to drive blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels down.

But the reason is scientific studies have shown such aggressive treatment improves the health of patients. The SPRINT study is another example of that.

Sometimes, studies show the opposite.

For example, studies recently have shown we often were pushing too hard to lower blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. That has caused most doctors to be less aggressive in treating blood sugar. When we change practice, it’s because we follow the science, wherever it leads.

In this example from Steve Conrad of Manhasset, New York, West found the worst possible start. True, if declarer could see all 52 cards, West did not have a winning lead. But if he had selected a card from any suit but hearts, surely the contract would have failed.

How did South get home in six spades after West led the heart queen? What do you think of the bidding?

In the auction, North did a double-cross, giving his partner the choice of playing in three notrump or at least five spades. North should have rebid four no-trump, which ought to be quantitative, not ace-asking. (To use Blackwood, North starts with a Texas transfer at the four-level, responding four hearts, then bids four no-trump.) Here, though, South would probably have rebid five spades.

In the given auction, four notrump was Roman Key Card Blackwood, South’s reply indicating two aces and the spade queen.

South realized that he needed to take these 12 tricks: five spades, three hearts, two diamonds, one club, and a diamond ruff in the short-trump hand. He won the first trick, cashed his spade queen, played off dummy’s top diamonds, ruffed the diamond six high in his hand, drew trumps, ran the heart nine to West’s jack, and claimed.
