When it comes to age, you don’t know till you ask Some of our online readers were upset Thursday about our decision to use surveillance camera images of two people wanted by DeKalb police.

Police said the two – whose images appear in today’s edition on page 7 – went into the Road Ranger convenience store at 125 N. Annie Glidden Road on Wednesday, found the clerk asleep and decided to help themselves to cash and merchandise.

The problem some readers had with the photos was that the people in them look young – as in younger than18 young – and as such, they thought we should not have used their images.

Only, we don’t know their ages because they are unidentified. The DeKalb police, who released the photos to the public, were seeking the public’s help to find them.

Regardless how it looks, it’s hard to tell how old someone is unless you ask them.

As somebody who had a baby face and still occasionally is asked for identification when buying adult beverages, I can vouch for this.

If the people who stole from the store while the store clerk slept are caught and found to be

underage, police won’t release their names; if they were available, we wouldn’t publish them.

The Daily Chronicle does not print the names of children (unless they are charged as adults).

It’s one of a few types of information we don’t publish, another notable category being crime victims (unless they wish to be identified).

Last summer, there were a lot of accusations that the newspaper was not interested in helping to identify suspects because we said we would not use people’s race as the sole means of identifying them.

As I said at the time, when there are images or bona-fide descriptions of suspects, we will not hesitate to publicize them.

MOM, APPARENT GUN RIGHTS ADVOCATE, SHOT BY 4-YEAR-OLD

MIAMI – A northeast Florida woman whose 4-year-old son accidentally shot her in the back while they were traveling in her pickup truck is apparently a gun lover who made numerous social media postings about gun rights.

A community Facebook page listed under Jamie Gilt for Gun Sense was filled with posts advocating for gun rights, including a quote that says “My right to protect my child with my gun trumps your fear of my gun.”

The Associated Press was unable to verify whether the page, which has since been taken down, belonged to Gilt. A person who answered the phone at her house on Thursday morning declined to comment.

Furnace failures lead to burst pipes, water damage at county-owned house in Sycamore

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A sober living home for men in Sycamore that DeKalb County officials had initially planned to open last fall faces new delays and expenses after a water pipe burst and damaged the home.

In January, both furnaces in the house at 491 E. State St. went out, which led to burst pipes and water damage. A kitchen was considered a total loss and county officials are going through the insurance claim process, DeKalb County Drug and DUI Court Coordinator Mike Douglas told the DeKalb County Board’s Law and Justice Committee last month.

The burst pipe was just the latest in a string of delays for the project.

The home still needs to be outfitted to meet standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Bids for that work came in at about $90,000 – roughly double that of earlier estimates.

The project will be re-bid in hopes of bringing the costs down, said John Frieders, the Sandwich Republican who is chairman of the Law and Justice Committee.

Fortunately, Douglas has secured $25,000 in additional funding for the project from the DeKalb County Community Foundation and a private donor. That amount should cover architect fees, but the rest of the expenses will need to be covered by the Drug/ DUI Court Fund, according to meeting minutes.

Douglas couldn’t be reached Thursday for additional details.

County justice officials were behind the push for a sober living facility near the courthouse to be used by men in the DeKalb County Drug/DUI Court program. Residents would pay to live at the house as part of the program, which provides drug and alcohol offenders an avenue to get clean and avoid jail.

The county lacks a sober-living facility for men in the program. Women in the program stay at Discovery House in DeKalb, run by the Ben Gordon Center.

Frieders said the plan is to have the home ready for occupancy by early summer, about a year after the county acquired it.

“There are issues with every project.

This isn’t insurmountable,” he said.

“Everyone is solidly behind this and it will be an asset to the program.”

The project might go over budget, but DeKalb County Administrator Gary Hanson said it wouldn’t be by much and that it wouldn’t affect the county’s budget. He called the burst pipe an “unfortunate stumbling block” but said the project was too important to drop.

“Everybody wants it to open as soon as possible,” he said.

Getting this far has been a struggle.

The Sycamore City Council and the county went back-and-forth for months over the use of the property. The county wanted the property because of its proximity to the courthouse, but city officials contested taking the property off the tax roll.

The Sycamore City Council approved a special use permit for the property in May 2015.

More federal agencies say NIU investigation continues

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – While it remains unclear if the U.S. Attorney’s Office intends to bring charges stemming from a 2013 FBI raid of Northern Illinois University, other federal agencies confirmed Thursday that they still are investigating.

In March 2013, FBI agents locked down the Police and Public Safety building on campus as part of a search believed to be focused on two NIU administrators: Eddie Williams, the former chief of operations and executive vice president of finance and facilities, and Donald Grady, the former police chief.

NIU officials and Grady’s attorney said they each were told earlier this year by the U.S. Attorney’s Office that the investigation was closed.

“We called the U.S. Attorney’s Office on Jan. 11. We asked, ‘What’s the status of the case?’ and they said, ‘We consider that matter closed,’ ” said NIU spokesman Joe King. He said the university was told that, “Barring new facts, the university should not expect to hear from the Department of Justice about the matter.”

Mike Fox, who is representing Grady in the former NIU police chief’s wrongful termination civil lawsuit against the university, said a point person on his team of lawyers was contacted and given a similar comment.

“We simply don’t know what is going on. We only know what we have been told and what we haven’t been told,” Fox said. “So while these two years have gone by, we’ve never been told that Chief Grady was a target of

The warrant requested all police records relating to the Eden’s Garden housing development, including “all communications between Donald P. Grady and Eddie R. Williams relating to Eden’s Gardens, including corre-

spondence, memoranda, notes, and audio recordings of meetings and telephone calls.”

Attempts to reach Williams at the South Park Baptist Church on the South Side of Chicago, where he is a pastor, were not successful. He also did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Fitz-

patrick said Thursday that his office could not speak on the probe, including whether it was ongoing. He referred the issue back to the FBI. “This is not a matter of public record,” Fitzgerald said.

But FBI spokesman Garrett Coon said earlier this week the criminal investigation was ongoing. The FBI was the lead investigating agency on the case, according to a March 2013 news release, working with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Inspector General, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Inspector General and Illinois State Police.

The federal education department still is delving.

“Yes, the investigation is ongoing – that’s all we can say at this time, as it is our policy to keep confidential the details of any ongoing work,” said Catherine Grant, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Education Office of Inspector General. “This longstanding policy is in place to protect and maintain the integrity of our work.”

A spokesperson with the HUD inspector general’s office said the agency would not comment.

Joe King said that over the years, NIU has provided additional documents and computer file information that investigators requested. However, King said, the university never learned specifically what the FBI or any of the other participating agencies were looking for.

He added that the university stands by its belief that the criminal case is closed.

Jury trial postponed for woman accused of attempted murder

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A new trial date for a woman police say tried to kill her estranged husband’s girlfriend in September will likely be months from now, officials said.

Nicholle Martinez was set to appear Jan. 11 at the DeKalb County Courthouse for a jury tri-

al that was expected to last three days. The trial was postponed, however, so Martinez and her attorney could meet privately with a judge. A new date has not been set.

Former DeKalb County Assistant State’s Attorney Duke Harris was assigned as the prosecutor on the case. However, Harris left the office in February and As-

sistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein has taken over the case.

Martinez and her attorney, Loren Blumenfeld, declined to comment after a brief court appearance Wednesday.

The case was continued to April 19 for a status hearing, and likely won’t go to trial before June, DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack said.

Born: Oct. 18, 1935; in Burlington, IA Died: Feb. 16, 2016; in Portland, OR James “Jim” Richard Andrews died peacefully at home on February 16, 2016, with his wife and sons by his side.

Jim was born in Burlington Iowa, to Margaret and Leonard Andrews. He graduated from South High School in Minneapolis. He earned his bachelors degree at the University of Minnesota and his master’s and doctorate in Speech-Language Pathology at Northwestern University. Jim taught at Michigan State University, The University of Oklahoma Medical School and, for thirty years, at Northern Illinois University (NIU) where he was Chair of the Department of Communicative Disorders as well as Director of the Speech and Hearing Clinic. In 2000 he retired and moved to Portland, Oregon, where he taught part-time for eight years in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences at Portland State University (PSU). He had earned several teaching awards at NIU and was twice honored as “Teacher of the Year” in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at PSU. Jim edited several professional journals, published many peer reviewed articles and co-authored, with his wife, Mary, “Family Based Treatment in Communicative Disorders: A Systemic Approach.” Together, they presented over 150 workshops, based on the model they created, throughout the U.S and Canada.

Jim was a deeply committed professor, a loving father who was actively involved in all aspects of the lives of his children and grandchildren, and a devoted husband. His family, friends and students will always remember his lifelong caring presence and his exceptional sense of humor. He will be deeply missed.

Jim is survived by Mary, his wife of 57 years; son, Dave and his wife, Sarah; son, Tim and his wife, Jen; son, Mark and his wife, Donna; and five grandchildren, Julian (21), Evan (17), Alexander, (12), Eva (11), and Lyllian (5).

Marlin R. Jordal, age 83, of Steward, Illinois, passed away Sunday February 28, 2016, at his home.

Marlin was the son of Milo and Edith (Berg) Jordal. He graduated from Steward High School and then farmed the family farm until his retirement in 2002.

Family, faith, and the farm were most important in his life. He was unpretentious and enjoyed the down to earth treasures of country life. Many times was heard the comment from the porch swing “It’s raining in Lee” when a much needed summer rainstorm was skirting the farm. Fifty-one years of summer sunsets were enjoyed by Marlin and his beloved wife, Peggy, on this porch, as well.

He was a lifelong member of Calvary Lutheran Church.

Marlin is survived by his children who will miss him dearly, Joanne (Joseph) Rivers of Boston, Mass., Bruce (Barbara) Jordal of Shabbona, Ruth Ann (Lon) Myers of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Collen (Scott) Johnson of Bloomington, IL; grandchildren, Joshua Rivers, Dane, Cole, Mallory (Sonny) Streit and Kevin Jordal, Kyle (Liz), Matt and Trevor Davis, Kirk and Kristian Knutson, and Hanna (Jeff) Swartz, Andrew (Lauren) Myers, Rachel (Brady) Beck and Jillian Myers, Jared (Danielle Alpers), Dylan and Kyle Johnson. Also surviving are 11 great grandchildren; a sister, Lois Hopwood of Rochelle; and a brother, David (Lynn) Jordal of Mendota; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret “Peggy” (McGovern) Jordal in 2003; and daughter, Kathleen (Jordal) Knutson in 2011.

Marlin never said “Goodbye” as a parting term, instead preferring “So long for now”.

Donors needed for Saturday blood drive in Sycamore

SYCAMORE – The Sycamore Fire Department at 535 DeKalb Ave. will be the site of a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Saturday, and donors are needed.

Heartland Blood Centers will collect the donations, and now is a particularly low time for them because of donors being unable to contribute because of illnesses or colds. Many high school and college students, who contribute about 25 percent of the blood supply, also are on spring break during March.

People who donate blood help patients such as accident victims, heart surgery patients, children with blood disorders and others.

The goal for Saturday’s blood drive is 26 donors, which will help save as many as 78 lives.

Donors will be entered in a raffle to win a pair of tickets to see a March 27 game at the “Sweet 16” round in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament at the United Center in Chicago.

DeKALB – A group of high school students plan to hold a mock presidential debate tonight, hoping to recreate the feel and flow as seen with real political discourses on a national cable network news station.

Andrew Yohanan and several of his fellow Barbs have planned the simulated matchup to take place in the DeKalb High School auditorium, at 7 p.m., ahead of the Tuesday primary to help educate the local electorate.

“We feel that this event would promote a positive view of DeKalb, as a whole, and help voters to make an informed decision on the future of America,” said Yohanan.

The mock debate would be open for students and members of the community to attend, he said. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to support the Barb Food Mart.

Student organizers said that it will be set up and run the way CNN has done with the real presidential debates the network has hosted. DeKalb High School students will play the roles of each of the candidates – representing the Republican and Democratic parties – and questions will be taken from members of the audience.

The students hope to create an exit poll after the mock debate, according to Yohanan.

DeKALB – Police are asking for help to identify two suspects who stole items from a Road Ranger, 125 N. Annie Glidden Road, DeKalb, early Wednesday morning after the store employee fell asleep.

“These two subjects entered the store several times and stole merchandise and money while the clerk had fallen asleep,” the DeKalb Police Department said in a news release.

Police: Man stole money meant for father’s care father by leaving him alone knowing he couldn’t care for himself, and never filled out the public aid forms that would have allowed his father to remain at the nursing home, court records show.

Wilbur Zekoff died in July under the legal guardianship of his niece and nephew.

Two years into his father’s stay at the nursing home, Bruce Zekoff said his father’s account had run out of money and he could not longer afford to pay the bills and rehab center fees, records show.

Although Bruce Zekoff had paid the nursing home about $82,000 for his father’s care, he used more than $138,000 for himself, records show.

Prosecutors allege that more than $57,000 alone was put toward Bruce Zekoff’s personal bills and the purchase of a new camper and a time-share property in Mexico.

He told police he couldn’t remember how he spent the $82,000 he paid himself using his father’s checks, court records show.

During an interview with DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies, Zekoff said he has never been good with money, and that putting him in charge of his father’s funds “was like putting a kid in a candy store,” court records show.

A future court date has not yet been scheduled.

SYCAMORE – A Sycamore man accused of neglecting his elderly father and using money intended to pay for nursing-home care to buy a time-share in Mexico was released Tuesday from the DeKalb County Jail.

Police said Bruce E. Zekoff, 55, of the 2200 block of Fairland Drive, Sycamore, caused his deceased father, 81-year-old Wilbur Zekoff, to be evicted from the DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center, then used his Bruce E. Zekoff father’s bank account to buy a camper and a time-share in Mexico, court records show.

Zekoff is charged with financial exploitation of the elderly and theft of more than $100,000, both of which are punishable by from four to 15 years in prison. He was released from jail after posting $1,000 bail Tuesday night.

Bruce Zekoff was a signatory on his father’s checking account to pay the bills, and was legally responsible for his father’s health care treatment.

The father was sent to live with his son after being evicted from the nursing home in May for not making payments. Soon after, Elder Care Services found Bruce Zekoff had neglected his

Illinois universities worry about future without budget

SPRINGFIELD –University officials painted a dire picture of the state of higher education in Illinois on Thursday, telling lawmakers that the failure to pass a budget is leading to layoffs and students considering going elsewhere for an education.

“We’re on the verge of dismantling the higher education system in Illinois,” James Applegate, the director of the state’s Board of Higher Education, told the Senate Appropriations Committee, which was hearing funding requests from various institutions. Lawmakers are in the odd situation of considering funding requests for the next budget year, which begins July 1, while the state continues to limp along without a budget for the current year.

There’s no end in sight to the budget stalemate between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Democrats who control the Legislature. Rauner wants business-friendly changes as a condition for approving a tax hike, while Democrats balk at what they say amounts to Rauner’s union-busting proposals.

Higher education institutions haven’t received state funding in nine months and are facing cuts because Illinois is dealing with a multibillion-dollar deficit.

Chicago Public Schools sues former CEO for $65 million

CHICAGO – Chicago Public Schools on Thursday filed a lawsuit seeking $65 million from its former chief executive, who pleaded guilty to helping steer millions of dollars in no-bid contracts in return for kickbacks.

In addition to Barbara Byrd-Bennett, the lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court also names Gary Solomon, co-owner of SUPES Academy, and his business partner, Thomas Vranas, who are accused of arranging to pay Byrd-Bennett $2.3 million in exchange for steering $23 million in no-bid contracts to the company.

“With scarce resources, staff furloughs and painful budget cuts, CPS is keeping a close watch on every dollar,” current CPS CEO Forrest Claypool said in a statement. “Barbara Byrd-Bennett and her co-conspirators knew the district’s dire straits and still concocted this scheme to divert needed resources away from classrooms and line their own pockets.”

Speaker faces challenger amid state budget furor

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Jason Gonzales stands out among the longshot candidates who have dared attempting to unseat powerful Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, who has handily won his southwest side Chicago district every two years for almost four decades.

Gonzales has a Harvard degree. He has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to compete in the now-majority Latino district. And his candidacy in Tuesday’s primary comes at a time when circumstances might favor a challenger: Voters are frustrated at state government’s ongoing paralysis amid a budget deadlock between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Madigan-led Democrats, plunging Illinois further into debt every day.

“We need some serious disruption if we’re going to survive as a state,” said Gonzales, 42, who has not run for office before. “We gotta face the facts, we gotta face the situation that we’re in. And Speaker Madigan has helped put us in that position.”

But Gonzales still faces extremely long odds. His fundraising pales in comparison to Madigan’s multimillion-dollar war chests, and he’s up against Madigan’s record in a district where voters don’t necessarily hold him responsible for the state’s overall mess.

Rauner and other Madigan critics see the speaker as an entrenched defender of unions and other special interests responsible for the state’s financial crisis. Madigan portrays himself as a defender of middle class families and workers who need the state’s vital services.

Gonzales is not just taking on the country’s longest-tenured statehouse speaker; he’s taking on the head of Illinois’ Democratic Party.

Madigan’s aides allege Gonzales was put up to run by Rauner and the Republicans who have contributed to his coffers. He denies that, and in turn questions why two other Latino candidates registered for the primary race minutes after he registered his campaign at the deadline – Joe Barboza, 40, and Grasiela Rodriguez, 39.

Madigan spokesman Steve Brown denies that Barboza and Rodriguez are plants. He attributes Gonzales’ accusations, which mirror what others have raised in the Jason past, to not having a solid Gonzales platform.

“You do that when you really don’t have much of a basis of support. You do that when you don’t have many good ideas,” Brown said.

Gonzales has raised nearly $222,000 himself and also is getting help from Illinois United for Change, which has spent nearly $363,000 supporting him and another $238,000 opposing Madigan, according to the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform. A pro-Rauner group, Illinois Opportunity Project, has pitched in $20,000 to that group, but $320,000 has come from Blair Hull, a wealthy Democrat who unsuccessfully ran for the U.S. Senate in 2004.

By comparison, as chairman of the state’s Democratic Party, Madigan controls four campaign funds currently totaling about $9 million. His “Friends of Michael J. Madigan” committee

alone, which focuses on the speaker’s own campaign, had $2.3 million to start the year, according to the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform.

Gonzales, an independent management consultant with a master’s in public administration from Harvard University, said he has considered challenging Madigan for years but was waiting for the right moment. He grew up in Carpentersville, but has lived in Madigan’s district for about two years.

“It’s time that we have somebody new. The Democratic Party in Illinois needs to be rebuilt,” Gonzales said.

Since Madigan’s election in 1971, he has won every race he’s been in, and recent contests have been blowouts.

Madigan also has been instrumental in maintaining the Democrats’ majority in the House for all but two years in the mid-1990s.

Madigan did not agree to an interview for this story.

Madigan’s 22nd House District has the third highest concentration of Latino residents among legislators in either chamber, according to the Latino Policy Forum. Latinos make up half of the 44,100 registered voters in the district.

Gonzales said he’s hoping to attract young Latino voters who don’t have a history with Madigan and is predicting a close race.

GOP rivals fight on – but politely – in debate

MIAMI – Abandoning the nasty insults of past debates, Donald Trump and his Republican rivals turned Thursday night’s presidential face-off into a mostly respectful but still pointed discussion of Social Security, Islam, trade and more. Trump shook his head and declared at one point: “I can’t believe how civil it’s been up here.”

Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio didn’t hesitate to lay out their differences with Trump, but the candidates largely managed to present those arguments without vitriol.

In a lengthy discussion of the threat posed by radicalized Muslims, Trump refused to back away from his recent statement that “Islam hates the West.” He said he wouldn’t stoop to being “politically correct” by avoiding such statements.

Rubio had a sharp comeback: “I’m not interested in being politically correct. I’m interested in being correct.”

The Florida senator noted the Muslims in the U.S. military and buried in Arlington National Cemetery and said the only way to solve the problem of violent extremists is to work with people in the Muslim faith who are not radicals.

Cruz bundled together his criticisms of Trump for what he called simplistic solutions on trade and on Islamic terrorists, saying, “The answer is not to simply yell, ‘China: bad, Muslim: bad.’ ” Trump, however, clearly was intent on projecting a less bombastic – and more presidential – image.

His closing message: “Be smart and unify.”

“We’re all in this together,” he said early on, sounding more like a conciliator than a provocateur as he strives to unify the party behind his candidacy. “We’re going to come up with solutions. We’re going to find the answer to things.”

The candidates split down the middle – Trump and Texas Sen. Cruz vs. Florida Sen. Rubio and Ohio Gov. John Kasich – on the likelihood of the GOP race coming down to a brokered Republican convention this summer.

“I think I’m going to have the delegates, OK?” Trump said.

As for who has a realistic chance of winning the nomination, Trump simply wrote off Rubio and Kasich, saying, “There are two of us that can, and there are two of us that cannot, OK?” Cruz heartily agreed with Trump on that.

Rubio countered that disappointing “delegate math” aside, he’d keep on fighting.

The room was dark and still, but folding chairs still circled a dozen or so round tabletops, as if the union’s annual Christmas party were just around the corner. My father was a utility worker, and the union hall was the one place where I could always count on seeing my parents relaxed and happy. They danced and laughed and let us kids eat as much dessert as we wanted. We were a boisterous collection of families celebrating our bigger family. Even as children, we understood why we were sticking with the union.

This Trump phenomenon has made me testy, I fear. “Why start off angry?” my mother would say if she were alive. “There’s already enough of that in the world.” She was your typical working-class mom, believing each of us had the power to change the world with kindness.

That headline I hated topped a Guardian story I appreciated by Thomas Frank, the author of “What’s the Matter With Kansas?” In the story, which is gaining traction on social media, Frank takes to task the many

liberals who cast white working-class Trump voters as mere reflections of his darkest inclinations.

The problem, Frank writes, is that too few of us are actually asking these voters what is on their minds.

“When people talk to white, working-class Trump supporters, instead of simply imagining what they might say, they find that what most concerns these people is the economy and their place in it,” Frank writes.

“I am referring to a study just published by Working America, a political-action auxiliary of the AFL-CIO, which interviewed some 1,600 white working-class voters in the suburbs of Cleveland and Pittsburgh in December and January.

“Support for Donald Trump, the group found, ran strong among these people, even among self-identified Democrats, but not because they are all pining for a racist in the White House. Their favorite aspect of Trump was his ‘attitude’, the blunt and forthright way he talks. As far as issues are concerned, ‘immigration’ placed third among the matters such voters care about, far behind their number one concern: ‘good jobs/the economy’.”

This is not to say that many of them are not also racist, sexist and xenophobic. Just as with any other demographic group, there is the worst among them, and we have seen too many of them at their ugliest.

But most of them know that their current appeal to presidential candidates and the gawking media is as fleeting as it is intense. They know what’s coming.

Win or lose, Trump will continue to enjoy a privileged, high-profile life, leaving behind the ordinary Americans who thought he meant it when he said, “I love you people.”

They will return to the same stack of bills and low-paying jobs and the stress that is unraveling their lives.

They will keep their prayers simple: May the car last another season; may the baby’s cough not turn into a prescription for antibiotics; may love prevail.

Forgotten again by the media, the ordinary Americans will say goodbye to loved ones and bury their dead.

They will bow their heads, maybe recite the prayers of their childhood.

They will close their eyes tight and try not to think about how broken dreams have a way of sucking the life out of you long before you die.

Fight against the Zika virus grows increasingly urgent The more doctors learn about the Zika virus, the more dangerous it appears. Is it too much to hope this research will prod the U.S. Congress to take action?

Of course, congressional action on any issue has been hard to come by lately. In the case of Zika, however, it’s worth examining what science said about its potential for harm.

Zika’s apparent link with microcephaly – a condition in which a baby’s brain fails to properly develop – is stronger than thought. Meanwhile, a study of pregnant women in Rio de Janeiro who tested positive for the virus found an extraordinary number of “grave outcomes,” includ-

ing stillbirth, stunted growth (even without microcephaly), and eye and brain lesions. In adults, Zika infection can trigger Guillain-Barre Syndrome, an immune disorder that can lead to muscle weakness and paralysis.

Scientists urgently are trying to figure out exactly how Zika inflicts this damage. A fuller understanding of the disease is needed before doctors can stop Zika’s worst effects. At the same time, an intensive effort to speed up vaccine creation and mosquito eradication is essential.

So it is unfortunate Congress so far has rejected President Barack Obama’s request for $1.8 billion in funding for Zika response. Leaders of

the House Appropriations Committee have said the administration should first use up $1.4 billion in unspent money from the United States’ emergency Ebola response. That money, however, is still needed to rebuild the health systems of the West African countries hit hardest by Ebola, and to make sure that the devastating disease is fully defeated.

What’s more, the Ebola money earmarked for vaccine development mostly has been spent. If new money isn’t provided, the government’s efforts to create a Zika vaccine could be delayed. Even with full funding, this effort isn’t expected to reach the first phase of clinical trials until the fall.

This is the wrong time for Congress to sit on its hands. In the coming months, the aedes aegypti mosquito, which carries Zika, will become active again in Southern states. There’s some indication Culex mosquitoes, far more common in the U.S., also might be capable of carrying the germ.

Many countries and agencies are cooperating to wage a counterattack against Zika, but the U.S. is in a position – geographically, scientifically and financially – to play a leading role. Congress should make sure U.S. public health officials have the funding they need.

The headline: “Millions of ordinary Americans support Donald Trump.” Immediately, I bristled.

Here we go again.

“Ordinary” Americans. We know what that’s supposed to mean. Plain people. Malleable people. Nothing-exceptional-about-them people. Every four years, these white working-class voters become objects of curiosity like pandas at the zoo.

These are the people I come from.

Many of their children grew up to do the same kind of work their parents did – but for less money and benefits and with fewer job protections. Make that no job protection – unless they’re in a union, which is increasingly unlikely. As NPR reported last year, nearly a third of American workers belonged to a union 50 years ago. Today 1 in 10 are union members.

I wonder how many of my fellow liberals in the pundit class have ever stepped foot in a union hall. We all talk about the importance of organized labor, but how many of us union kids are left? It matters, I think, in telling this story. If you don’t know any working-class voters, then it’s much easier to portray them as angry, racist and xenophobic – lemmings slogging their way toward the cliff’s edge, dragging their expired lives behind them.

100+ Women Who Care donates to KC Adult Ed DAILY CHRONICLE The DeKalb/Sycamore chapter of 100+ Women Who Care selected the Kishwaukee College Adult Education Program as its quarterly donation recipient. The Adult Education Program received $10,900 from representatives of the group Feb. 29 at the college.

100+ Women Who Care is an organization that began in 2006 in Jackson, Michigan, and has since grown to more than 350 chapters across the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The concept is simple: a local group of 100 or more women gather four times each year.

Members can put the name of a local stand-alone 501(c)(3) into a basket and a potential recipient is drawn at random. The nominating woman has five minutes to present on her nomination, and then the group votes whether to fund the need.

Each woman writes a check for $100 to the selected charity, resulting in a minimum $10,000 donation.

The group’s slogan is: 100 Women – 1 Hour – 10K Dollars – Local Impact. The DeKalb/Sycamore chapter is looking to reach 150 members, which will bring each quarter’s donation to $15,000.

APLE PARK – Kaneland junior Austin Kedzie hated doing sprints in the Knights’ wrestling room.

However, it certainly paid off.

Kedzie was the highest placing wrestler in the area as the state runner-up in Class 2A and is the 2015-16 Daily Chronicle Wrestler of the Year.

“I knew it would come down to conditioning,” Kedzie said. “It was whoever was moving the whole six minutes and I was able to keep moving the whole time this year.”

Wrestling at both 113 and 106

pounds during the season, Kedzie finished 38-8, losing to Travis FordMelton (Marian Catholic) in the Class 2A 106-pound championship match.

It was the best finish for a Kaneland wrestler since Dan Goress won a title in 2013.

“When he said he felt good going into the final weekend, it made me feel good because I didn’t see any doubt (in his face),” Kaneland coach Joe Orozco said.

Kedzie rolled through the Class 2A Rochelle Regional with three pins in three victories and took first in the Washington Sectional – including a narrow 2-0 win over Trey Keeley (Washington) in the semifinal.

“The whole thing that was in my head was my season is coming to an end, so I want to make the last match matter,” Kedzie said.

At the state meet, he pinned Landen Pfeiffer (Marengo) in 24 seconds, trounced Kooper Loehr (Mt. Zion), 12-1, and crushed Chris Kennedy (Lincoln Way West), 19-2, to advance to the championship match.

However, Ford-Melton pinned him early in the second period to win the title.

“I was a little upset, but after thinking about it more and more, I have one more year,” Kedzie said. “I think this is practice for next year. Now I know the feeling.”

While Kedzie racked up several quick pins on the season, Orozco said it was the few losses the junior wrestler suffered that impressed him. He held his own against Real Woods (Montini Catholic) – who won the state title at 106 in 2015 and was the runner-up at 113 this season – and two of Kedzie’s losses were against Ford-Melton, who went undefeated this season.

“It’s those kind of matches – he didn’t have a lot of them – that made him say, ‘OK, now I see. I made a mistake. I have to clean that up,’ ” Orozco said. “That helped him better than a tech fall or pin. You want those wins, but I think those losses kind of got him prepared for the rest of the season.”

Trevathan brings humble attitude

kfishbain@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – Danny Trevathan stresses humility. It might be a bit more difficult now that he’s a $24.5 million man with a Super Bowl ring brought in to fix the Bears’ defense.

But Trevathan has his reasons to stay humble, not just being undersized, slipping to the sixth round of the 2012 draft or remembering the 2014 recovery from a dislocated kneecap.

Trevathan takes himself back to a 2011 service trip to Ethiopia.

“Life-changing,” Trevathan said of the trip he took while on the Kentucky football team. “I learned to not take anything for granted, man. People don’t realize what we have in front of us. I take that anger on the field with me.

“Just to see people like that – we visited an orphanage, a widow colony and a leprosy colony. It was some life-changing stuff, seriously. I advise anybody who has time to go over there. It will change your life and make you turn around for the better.”

Trevathan went to Ethiopia before his senior year, and the lessons learned then helped him to take a leadership role at Kentucky. It clearly still means a lot as he takes the next step in his NFL career where he reunites with coach John Fox, who always reminded him about how far he has come.

“I always respected him, and he was always in my ear telling me, ‘Danny, no matter where you come from, you can go places, man. Sixth-round draft pick, people overlook you all this and that, but you’re here now. Make a name for yourself,’ ”

Trevathan said.

The other connection to make Trevathan feel comfortable about a move to Chicago was Bears director of college scouting Anthony “Champ” Kelly, who was with Denver and played his college ball at Kentucky.

“I’m sure he [helped] upstairs,” Trevathan said.

“He helped get me to Denver for sure (after college). … Champ, we’ve got a chemistry together when I see him. It’s a Kentucky thing.”

That Kentucky experience has resonated with Trevathan, even referring to the adversity there when describing how he handles the on-field job of covering tight ends.

“I take pride in shutting down people and not letting people beat me,” he said. “I hate losing.

I lost so much in college, I just hate that taste.

What’s going to help me not do that is my offseason preparation. I prepare like no other.”

Trevathan is at the top of his football career, but he points out the things he has seen and been through as reasons he believes he can take his game to the next level. His proudest accomplishment wasn’t necessily the Super Bowl title, but his return from injury.

“I stayed humble and hungry, man. In the world today, it’s easy to get big-headed and get full of yourself and overlook everybody,” he said. “I believe in treating everybody equally and playing ball, man. And just loving the game of football. It’s not going to last forever.

“When I had my injury I thought it was over for me, but at the same I wanted to get back. So I fell back in love with it [the game] and I don’t want that love to ever leave.”

Hot-shooting Bobcats too much for Huskies

sports@daily-chronicle.com The Ohio men’s basketball team didn’t miss much against Northern Illinois on Thursday.

The Bobcats hit the Huskies with a barrage of outside shots and won, 79-62, in the second round of the Mid-American Conference tournament at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

Ohio, which led by as many as 24 points, finished the game 14 for 29 from the 3-point line.

“This one is going to sting because everybody’s goal is to get to the NCAA tournament,” NIU coach Mark Montgomery said.

The Huskies (21-12 overall) will likely play in a postseason tournament, with Montgomery saying that they already received invitations to play in the CIT, CBI and the inaugural Vegas 16.

NIU freshman guard Marshawn Wilson was the main bright spot for the Huskies against the Bobcats, scoring 22 points and was 4 for 8 from three. Freshman center Levi Bradley scored 10 points in the loss.

Sophomore post Marin Maric played for the first time since injuring his right ankle in the loss at Eastern Michigan and Montgomery said

that Maric looked a step slow against the Bobcats. He finished with seven points and eight rebounds, shooting 2 for 8 from the floor.

“It affected him, no question,” Montgomery said. “When you can’t practice, he missed nine straight days, it’s hard.”

Two of the Huskies’ leading scorers on the year – senior guard Travon Baker and junior guard Aaric Armstead – struggled offensively against Ohio. Baker was 2 for 9 with seven points and Armstead was 1 for 6 with two points, with his only basket coming in the final two minutes of the game.

“We couldn’t get into a rhythm offensively,” Montgomery said. “You have to credit Ohio. They made some shots early and they kept making shots.”

Ohio center Antonio Campbell, the conference player of the year, had 21 points and eight rebounds, and Jaaron Simmons had 16 points and 11 assists in the win.

CLEVELAND – Isaiah Johnson made a layup with 25.5 seconds left as top-seeded Akron rallied in the second half to beat Eastern Michigan, 65-63, in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference tournament Thursday.

The Zips (25-7) trailed by 12 with 8:46 left before finally finding their range behind the 3-point line to hold off the eighth-seeded Eagles (18-15).

They will face 12th-seeded Bowling Green today in the semifinals.

Raven Lee made two free throws to put Eastern Michigan up 63-62 before the Zips went inside to Johnson, who finished with 19 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.

Lee was bumped while missing a layup with nine seconds left but didn’t get the call and Akron’s Josh Williams missed a breakaway with three

seconds left.

Eastern Michigan was assessed a technical foul for calling a timeout it didn’t have and Tim Bond made a free throw for Akron.

Reggie McAdams led Akron with 20 points. The Zips went 9 of 33 on 3-pointers.

Lee led the Eagles with 23 points.

Bowling Green 62, Central Michigan 59: Antwon Lillard drained a 3-point-

er with 12.3 seconds left as Bowling Green pulled off its second upset in the Mid-American Conference tournament by knocking off Central Michigan in the quarterfinals.

Lillard’s shot from the top of the key gave him 26 points and the No. 12 seeded Falcons (16-17) a 60-59 lead.

Bowling Green forced a turnover on Central Michigan’s next possession and Ismail Ali made two free throws to make it 62-59.

The Chippewas (17-15) had one last

chance but Bowling Green’s JD Tisdale picked off the inbounds pass near mid-court.

The Falcons, who won Monday at No. 5 Kent State to make the quarterfinals, went into the stands to celebrate with their fans.

They’ll meet top-seeded Akron in today’s semifinals.

Buffalo 94, Miami (Ohio) 81: Willie Conner scored 25 points, Blake Hamilton grabbed 16 rebounds and defending champion Buffalo advanced to the Mid-American Conference tournament semifinals with a win over Miami (Ohio).

The third-seeded Bulls (18-14) made three straight 3-pointers early in the second half to open a 12-point lead and

never let the RedHawks (13-20) get closer than seven the rest of the way.

Buffalo will play second-seeded Ohio in today’s second semifinal.

Top-seeded Akron will face No. 12 seed Bowling Green in the other semifinal.

Buffalo is two wins away from winning the conference tournament for the second straight year after defeating Central Michigan in last year’s title game. It would also be the Bulls’ second overall MAC championship.

SAN ANTONIO – Kawhi Leonard had 29 points, LaMarcus Aldridge had 26 points and 10 rebounds, and the San Antonio Spurs won their 31st straight at home to open the season by upending the short-handed Bulls, 109-101, on Thursday night.

Tony Parker added 20 points and had 12 assists for San Antonio, which has won 40 straight at home going back to last season.

Derrick Rose and Pau Gasol had 21 points each for the Bulls. E’Twaun Moore had 20 points, going 4 for 5 on 3-pointers.

SAN ANTONIO – The status with Jimmy Butler’s left knee didn’t change Thursday.

His mind being eased definitely did.

The two-time All-Star received the news the Bulls organization expected him to hear, as his visit down to Florida and Dr. James Andrews revealed there was nothing structurally wrong with his left knee, and he could continue a workout program to get him back on the court.

The only question still unanswered was when will that return take place?

Coach Fred Hoiberg said Butler worked out Thursday in Chicago, would be re-evaluated in the morning, and then go through another workout today. If all goes well, there’s a chance Butler could play in the game against Miami later tonight.

“I wouldn’t rule it out, but at the same time we’re going to be safe with it,” Hoiberg said.

Butler first suffered the knee strain Feb. 5, in a loss at Denver, and then missed the next 11 games, as the Bulls went 3-8 without him. He returned to

Counter stress to avoid overeating Dear Dr. K: I eat whenever I’m stressed out – and I always reach for the sweet stuff. Why does stress have this effect on me? How can I fight the urge?

Dear Reader: You’re not alone. Ongoing stress, the hormones it unleashes and the effects of high-fat, sugary “comfort foods” push many people toward overeating.

In the short term, stress can shut down appetite. But if stress persists, it’s a different story. In times of stress, the adrenal glands release a hormone called cortisol that increases appetite. It also may ramp up motivation in general – including the motivation to eat. Once a stressful episode is over, cortisol levels should fall. But if the stress doesn’t go away – or if a person’s stress response gets stuck in the “on” position – cortisol may stay elevated.

Stress also seems to affect food preferences. Numerous studies (many of them in animals) have shown physical or emotional distress increases the intake of food high in fat, sugar or both. High cortisol levels, in combination with high insulin levels, might be responsible.

Other research suggests ghrelin, a “hunger hormone,” might have a role.

Ghrelin is made in the stomach, after it has not been stretched by food for several hours. The hormone travels through the blood to the brain, where it signals you need to eat something.

Once ingested, fat- and sugar-filled foods seem to have a positive feedback effect. They inhibit activity in the parts of the brain that produce and process stress.

In a sense, these foods really are “comfort” foods in that they seem to counteract stress. This might explain why you reach for particular foods when you are feeling stressed. And why I do, too.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff How to fight the urge? The first step is obvious: Get rid of the high-fat, sugary foods in your kitchen. Keeping those foods handy is just inviting trouble.

But it is just as important, if not more so, to counter the stress that causes your cravings. Here are some suggestions: • Meditate. Countless studies show meditation reduces stress. It also may help you become more mindful of food choices. With practice, you may be able to pay better attention to the impulse to grab certain comfort foods and inhibit that impulse.

• Exercise. Low-intensity exercise seems to reduce levels of cortisol, and that should help decrease appetite. Some activities, such as yoga and tai chi, have elements of both exercise and meditation.

• Seek social support. Friends, family and other sources of social support seem to have a buffering effect on the stress people experience. Seek them out when stress starts to build.

I remember a patient who had several co-workers whom she found difficult. She was eating a lot of junk food and gaining weight. I advised her to walk for one hour every morning. She lost 40 pounds during the first year. “It wasn’t that the exercise burned it off,” she said. “The exercise chilled me out. They just didn’t bug me anymore.”

I work with people between 50 and 70 hours a week. I have more than a thousand town home and condo residents to deal with, and I receive nonstop complaints day in and day out.
