A ringing endorsement for yoga POLL The people at the Kishwaukee Family YMCA are a bit more talkative than at some of the other gyms that have agreed to have me as a member.

I’d say maybe it’s because people here are friendlier, but I was a member of a different local gym before, and the people at the Y are chattier. I like it better. You hear more stories and jokes and whatnot.

On Sunday, just before I ducked into the sauna to sweat for awhile – it’s where you go when you want to feel like you’re working hard without actually moving – I had a short exchange with a guy in his 50s. He mentioned a yoga class he was taking.

Never tried that, I said.

It’s great, he told me. Works your core and other muscles. If you can hold the poses, it makes you strong.

Then he said he could still do this – and

Good for you, man. I’m not sure if I can do any hand-clap push-ups, and I’m not dressed to find out at the moment.

But it appears that yoga has some real benefits. Maybe I’ll check it out sometime. I will try almost most anything once.

Not sure what I’d wear, however. “Yoga pants” are out for me.

SYCAMORE – A bad batch of jailhouse “hooch” might be to blame for killing one man and sickening another at the DeKalb County jail Monday, officials say.

Brandon A. Washington, 28, of Rochelle, became sick in his cell shortly before 2 a.m. Deputies were alerted after hearing banging on cell bars by other inmates, DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said.

A preliminary investigation found that Washington had been drinking homemade alcohol – commonly referred to as “hooch” – with cellmate Christopher Gerken, who faces murder charges in connection with a botched drug deal in October 2015.

HOUSE FIRES MORE COMMON IN WINTER Aftermath can take months to recover from

By BRITTANY KEEPERMAN bkeeperman@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The Bliujus family needs to have their property rezoned in order to rebuild their house after a fire destroyed it late last year.

The family’s Sycamore house will have to be torn down and rebuilt on a new foundation. The 100-plus-year-old house was built in an area that since has been zoned for commercial use, and the city must agree to rezone it and issue variances if the family is to rebuild.

The Bliujus family isn’t alone. When the weather turns cold, the DeKalb Fire Department sees a 20 percent jump in house fires, Deputy Fire Chief Jeff McMaster said.

“When you track out the fires, we really are a winter fire department,” he said.

Space heaters and other alternative

Fire prevention tips n Keep space heaters three feet away from objects such as bedspreads and curtains n Make sure smoking materials are extinguished n Don’t defrost frozen pipes with a blowtorch (it’s more common than you think) n Don’t use your oven as a heating appliance n Blow out the candles before you leave the room or go to sleep n Clean out your chimney regularly n Only burn regular wood logs in your fireplace n Review the operating instructions for your fireplace

Source: DeKalb Fire Department – and not recommended – home heating methods are the main cause for the spike in fires, he said.

“What we run into regularly, is people who are using their ovens as heating appliances,” McMaster said. “They aren’t made to constantly run.”

Electric stoves can malfunction if

they are left running and gas stoves can eventually start to let off carbon monoxide, he said. Space heaters are another problem causer. It’s recommended that you keep things at least three feet from a space heater, McMaster said.

“Sometimes, places lack heat or the heat is inadequate, and people also use

space heaters, but they keep things too close to the heating appliances.” McMaster said. “A lot of times people put them in their bedrooms, but they put them next to the bed so the bedspread or curtains catch fire.”

People also burn things that aren’t meant to be burned in a fireplace, which can lead to chimney fires. Because chimneys are only made to sustain the heat of normal wood logs, they can overheat if you throw in things such as old furniture with varnish or construction materials.

“Another thing we see is that people forget how to use them,” McMaster said, “So people will start the first fire of the season but forget to open up the dampers.”

By RHONDA GILLESPIE rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Fewer students enrolled this semester compared with spring 2015 at Kishwaukee College and Northern Illinois University, which adds to the trend of enrollment at the colleges spiraling down.

For the first time in at least four years, spring enrollment at NIU didn’t surpass 19,000. In fall 2012, the school recorded 21,869 undergraduates. That number is down to 18,519 this spring. “The percentage change from fall to spring this year is almost identical to that of the last few years, so there are no real surprises,� NIU spokesman Joe King said.

Higher education officials say the continuing trend of enrollment declines is being fueled by factors including the complete lack of funding from the State of Illinois, as well as more aggressive recruiting of Illinois students by out-of-state schools.

Spring enrollment at NIU was more than 1,600 students less than it was in the fall, in part because of graduation, transfers and other factors, NIU officials said.

At Kishwaukee College there are 3,355 students enrolled this semester, down from the 3,686 who signed up for classes in spring 2015, said Kayte Hamel, a spokeswoman for the twoyear college.

State budget angst and increased tuition and fees have beset most of the state’s public universities. Schools such as NIU still don’t know how much general state aid they will receive for fiscal 2016, which is more than halfway over. Yet by crediting students’ accounts without any idea of when they would be reimbursed by the state, NIU and other state universities have borne the burden for students whose

Further, robust recruitment by schools outside the state has led to students opting to leave Illinois to get their college degrees. “We have many more students from Illinois who graduate from high school that make the decision to attend college out of state,� said Eric Weldy, NIU vice president for student affairs and enrollment management.

The 790 new freshmen who started this semester was an increase of 33 over the 757 students who started at NIU in spring 2015. Also, the university picked up 531 transfer students when the semester started last month.

DeKALB – City Council members questioned Shodeen’s proposal to build a four-story hotel and a luxury high-end apartment complex on its property on Lincoln Highway west of downtown DeKalb.

The Geneva-based developer bought the property 10 years ago and now wants to build a four-story, 128-bed Marriott hotel and a 459-bedroom luxury apartment complex on its 4.5-acre property. Similar proposals have been brought forward in the past but nothing has stuck so far.

Parking was a major talking point Monday, as it was when the city’s Planning and Zoning commission first considered the proposal.

“If you can build it by right, build it,” Sixth Ward alderman Dave Baker said.

Fourth Ward Bob Snow questioned Shodeen’s plan to build more three- and four-bedroom units than anything else.

The developer proposed 85 three-bedrooms, 19 four-bedrooms, 45 two-bedrooms and 38 one-bedrooms.

“I do think DeKalb needs more residential for young professionals,” he said. “But when you build three- and four-bedrooms, it sounds like it’s marketing to students. ... Young professionals don’t pay for four-bedrooms.”

The mayor pushed the discussion further down the line and the concept will be discussed a future City Council meeting, at a date yet to be announced.

Inmate dies after drinking ‘hooch’ at DeKalb County jail SYCAMORE – A bad batch of jailhouse “hooch” might be to blame for killing one man and sickening another at the DeKalb County jail on Monday, officials say.

Brandon A. Washington, 28, of Rochelle, became sick in his cell shortly before 2 a.m. Deputies were alerted after hearing banging on cell bars by other inmates, DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said.

Police said Washington was unconscious when they found him. Deputies gave him CPR before he was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Washington died at the hospital at 2:34 a.m., police said.

Washington w ​ as convicted in 2010 of attempted murder for shooting Jason Johnson of DeKalb in the face at pointblank range in May 2009. He had been

sentenced to 38 years in prison, but was sent back to the DeKalb County Jail by court order last November after filing a post-conviction petition.

He was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, Scott said.

A preliminary investigation found Washington had been drinking homemade alcohol – Brandon commonly referred to as Washington “hooch” – with cellmate Christopher Gerken, who faces murder charges in connection with a botched drug deal in October 2015.

Drugs also may have been involved, but toxicology results were Christopher pending an autopsy and J. Gerken lab testing, Scott said.

County Coroner Dennis Miller are investigating Washington’s death. The State Police report will be filed with the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The State Police will look at the conduct of officers in the jail, Scott said. He said it was important to have an independent agency investigate.

The Illinois Department of Corrections also is conducting a review.

At least four other inmates have died from events that happened while they were in custody at the DeKalb County Jail. The first was a suicide by hanging in 1998. Brandi L. Brantley, 19, of DeKalb died April 2009 at the jail.

Her death was ruled a suicide, but her family later filed a lawsuit. A report found that jail employees followed protocol. Gary Aspengren, 64, of Cortland, died at a Rockford hospital shortly after a fall at the jail in October 2009. Randall L. Dahl, 55, died of a blood clot in his lung after being found on the floor of his cell in May 2010.

He said officers suspected drugs may have also been involved based on observations, but won’t know for sure until toxicology tests come back from the lab. Inmates frequently try to smuggle drugs and other contraband into the facility, Scott said.

“That’s something we are always on alert for,” he said.

Guards are limited in what types of searches they can perform on inmates coming into the jail, he added.

Gerken was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital shortly after 2:40 a.m. He refused treatment at the time, but was taken back to the hospital at 6:45 in the morning after he started vomiting again. At that time, he was admitted to the hospital, police said. Gerken is expected to recover. Once released by the hospital, he will be taken back to jail, Scott said.

SANDWICH – A Sandwich woman has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after she crashed her car into the front of the Sandwich Public Library early Saturday morning.

Sandwich police arrested 25-yearold Cassondra A. Zimbelman of the 1100 block of East Railroad Street, Sandwich, on charges of DUI and issued her a ticket for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

According to police, Zimbelman had been traveling north on Vale Street about 12:53 a.m. when she didn’t stop and entered the parking lot of the Sandwich Public Library. From there, she collided with a median in the parking lot and then continued north through the lot where she then struck the curb.

Zimbelman continued north over the curb and struck the building, police said. Upon arrival, police indicated that they found that Zimbelman’s vehicle had struck the south side of the library and had come to a rest inside the building.

Zimbelman was taken to Valley West Hospital for her injuries, and a

Horn said that no one was at the library at the time of the crash and that library trustees met on the scene early Saturday to survey the damage.

According to Horn, the car entered the building at the public meeting room of the library. “That is probably the best place that it could have possibly hit us because it is a big empty room,� she said.

Horn said the car crashed through a couple of windows and an emergency exit door as well as an interior sidewall of the room connecting to a storage closet. The outer wall and sidewall will both have to repaired, Horn said, as well as the windows. The library building is fairly new, having just opened in September 2014. Horn said the library is working with the insurance company and does not know at this time how much the damages will cost to repair. “My staff has pulled together, and they have been working diligently. The board of trustees is also not opposed to rolling up their sleeves and digging in, so we are going to be just fine,� Horn said.

“If it is zoning compliant, it’s just a matter of obtaining a building permit and going through the plan review process,” said John Sauter, director of Sycamore’s Building and Engineering department. “If it’s, say, a house on a small lot where something like the building setbacks aren’t compliant, they may have to go through a variance process.”

Sauter said on average Sycamore homeowners only came to the city for permits related to house fires two to four times a year.

“This is the first one I have been involved with that is a complete rebuild,” he said of the Bliujus family’s request.

“It really depends on the situation.

Everyone is different. In this particular case, there are zoning issues and the property is zoned commercial and needs to be rezoned to residential.”

The Bliujus family should have their new home built – barring any issues with city approval or obtaining construction materials – in about four months. The zoning issue has been one of the biggest setbacks.

Dems vying for U.S. Senate make cases

By SARA BURNETT The Associated Press CHICAGO – Meeting for the first time this election season, the three Illinois Democrats vying for U.S. Senate worked to distinguish themselves from each other and their GOP rivals Monday, sharing stories of difficult childhoods, business backgrounds and time in the trenches of struggling Chicago neighborhoods.

Napoleon Harris and former Chicago Urban League CEO Andrea Zopp also touched on how they’d reduce the national debt and where they differ from President Barack Obama. The winner of the March 15 primary likely will face Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, who’s seeking his second term and is considered a heavy favorite to win a GOP primary against businessman James Marter. Democrats nationally see Kirk as one of the GOP’s most vulnerable incumbents, and Illinois as key to their strategy to pick up seats and possibly win back control of the Senate.

PEORIA – A newspaper report said a man who’s serving 15 years in prison for running an underage prostitution operation did so out of an apartment that police helped him get through an anti-violence program.

Documents acquired by the Peoria Journal Star show the police department’s Don’t Shoot initiative aided Matthew Petrakis obtaining the apartment in 2014.

The program focuses on gangs and other violent groups by warning ex-offenders on parole or probation that they are being monitored by police and offering social services to help those most likely to commit or become a victim of gun violence.

Illinois State Museum says it has reached deal to reopen

SPRINGFIELD – The agency that oversees the Illinois State Museum and the governor’s office have reached an agreement to reopen the facility and its satellite locations by charging admission and closing two branches, the state announced Monday.

It comes three days after Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner rejected legislation to reopen the museums, but suggested in his veto letter that the facilities could reopen provided they don’t rely solely on state support. To that end, Rauner recommended admission fees and fundraising via donations and private partnerships.

The state Department of Natural Resources, which is in charge of the museums, agreed with the governor’s suggestions.

The department also said the locations slated for closing are the Chicago and Rend Lake branches.

It remains to be seen whether lawmakers will go along with the proposed agreement.

Still, Trump was running ahead in pre-primary polls, as was Sanders on the Democratic side.

Not so long ago, Republicans saw New Hampshire as the proving ground that would winnow their chockablock field of candidates.

Rubio’s surge into third place in Iowa one week ago raised the prospect that voters here would anoint him over Bush, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

Yet Rubio faced fresh questions about his readiness ­and his ability to defeat the Democratic nominee – after Saturday’s debate, when he was mocked for reciting rote talking points about President Barack Obama over and over.

Growing doubts about Rubio seemed to portend a fight for delegates that could extend for weeks or months – to the dismay of Republican Party leaders hoping for a quick consolidation behind anyone but Cruz or Trump.

One “loaf” of soap takes 13 hours to produce and makes about 16 bars, which, if used properly, lasts as long as any other store-bought bar soap – but without the dyes and detergents, she said.

“With handmade soap, the only thing you have to keep in mind is it doesn’t have the detergents, it isn’t as hard as bars there, so in between uses you have to let it dry out,” she said. “If you do that it’s going to last as long as a regular bar of soap.”

Herb/o/logy makes beard oil, lotion, mousse, shave pucks and fragrances, as well as an entire line of products dedicated to man’s best friend. All of the proceeds from Canine Companion’s pet sprays, paw waxes and nose lotions are donated to Raven’s Husky Haven in Sycamore.

“I started this because I was very interested in plant medicine and plant health. My husband and I started an organic garden. I started to work in the hospital, too and I just became more and more interested in plant proprieties,” Ostdick said. “It’s just kind evolved.”

Ostdick doesn’t claim her products can be used for medicinal purposes. Rather, her use of locally sourced plants adds a natural element that storebought soaps and lotions just don’t have.

“We are actually known locally for our lip butter.

That was one of the first products that I made and a friend of mine was in the Air Force years ago and she was deployed, and she actually had second degree burns to her lip,” Ostdick said. “Through trial and error, we came up with this lip butter that everyone seems to like.”

As the business expands, Ostdick hopes she can grow her garden large enough to keep up. Her main goal has always been to use local, organic ingredients to serve the people in her own community.

Blame Congress for tax inversions If you’re mad at the news the Glendale, Wisconsin-based Johnson Controls is, through its merger with Tyco International, moving its corporate headquarters to Ireland to avoid paying the higher American corporate tax rate, we’d advise you to send your anger in the right direction: Toward Congress.

The merger will save Johnson Controls an estimated $150 million on U.S. taxes, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Jan. 30. It’s an action known as a tax inversion. The United States has the highest corporate tax rates in the world – a statutory rate of 39.1 percent and a marginal effective rate of 35.3 percent – making inversion all too popular with American companies.

In 2014, for example, Chicago-area companies AbbVie, Horizon Pharma, Medtronic, Chiquita Brands and Mylan moved their corporate headquarters across the Atlantic to take advantage of lower corporate tax rates.

“The failure to modernize the federal tax code has pushed American businesses to move overseas,” wrote Brett Healy of the free-market Wisconsin-based think tank MacIver Institute.

“Our politicians have failed us, not Johnson Controls.”

We’re inclined to agree.

There’s blame to go around for the corporate tax rate staying as high as it is. During the October 2013 budget standoff between President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans, with the threat of a government shutdown looming in the air, House Speaker Paul Ryan’s effort at making tax reform part of the budget deal was thrown overboard as tea party Republicans, led by U.S Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, demanded the defunding of the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, as part of any budget deal.

The president called Cruz’s bluff, and a budget deal was reached without any defunding of Obamacare ... but also without any serious effort to take up Ryan’s tax reform proposals.

In the spring and summer of 2014, with American companies fleeing, congressional Democrats introduced legislation to prevent companies from engaging in inversion, and to punish those that did. That legislation went nowhere, but more importantly that’s treating the symptom instead of the disease.

Then, after the Republican victories in the November 2014 midterm elections, Ryan ascended to chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. In an interview with The Journal Times that month, Ryan said he expected tax reform to be a big issue in 2015.

We don’t recall a lot of action on tax reform taking place last year. Perhaps prospects will improve now that Ryan is speaker.

We understand Republicans are almost always in favor of lower taxes, and the Democrats don’t want to see the loss in tax revenue that would come from reducing the corporate tax rate.

But there’s no tax revenue to be collected at all when a company relocates its corporate offices to another country.

Businesses look for means to avoidance, ways to pay less in taxes. At the moment, corporate inversion is the path that has been drawn up. Members of both political parties, whether in Congress or the White House, should have an interest in creating an American business climate in which companies want to be here and not someplace else.

Preventing child sex tourism

By CHRIS SMITH The Washington Post As principal author of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 – a landmark law combatting sex- and labor-trafficking at home and abroad – I am deeply concerned the United States has not done enough to address the rape and sexual abuse of children by convicted pedophiles who travel in secret to countries where child sex tourism thrives.

That concern is shared by many, and it’s why a unanimous Congress recently passed legislation, which I sponsored as it was refined over eight years, to significantly expand protections for children worldwide. Now awaiting the president’s signature, H.R. 515 – the International Megan’s Law – authorizes the creation of a comprehensive, reciprocal notification system between U.S. and foreign law enforcement regarding the travels of those required by law to be on government sex-offender registries.

This is a serious problem.

State Department Trafficking in Persons Reports identify several dozen countries that are destinations for child sex tourism, including Mexico, the Philippines, Brazil and Thailand. Just last month the United Nations noted with alarm increasing child sex tourism in

Peru. These governments need to know when convicted pedophiles cross their borders.

A 2010 Government Accountability Office report found that at least 4,500 U.S. passports were issued to registered sex offenders in fiscal 2008 alone. Typically, a passport is valid for 10 years, meaning that currently tens of thousands of offenders could be traveling abroad as child sex tourists.

Studies demonstrate that even when caught, some child predators have a propensity to reoffend. For example, a 2009 study by Mark E. Olver, Stephen C.P. Wong and Terry P. Nicholaichuk, one of many available on the Justice Department’s SMART Web site, found that untreated moderate- to high-risk sex offenders were reconvicted for sex crimes at a rate of 17.7 percent after three years and 32 percent after 10 years.

The most remarked-upon provision of the law is a mandate that an “identifier” – defined as a “visual designation affixed to a conspicuous location” – be placed on passports to indicate that holders appear on a U.S. sex-offender registry for an offense against children.

Concerns have been raised about impeding the rights of citizens to travel. U.S. law denies passports to delinquent taxpayers, deadbeat parents

and drug smugglers; the law’s passport provision, however, does not go this far. It simply would add an identifier deemed appropriate by the executive branch. When the legal duty for the sex offender to register ends, so does the requirement for the passport identifier.

The International Megan’s Law honors the memory of Megan Kanka – a precious girl from my hometown of Hamilton, New Jersey, who was kidnapped, raped and brutally murdered in 1994 by a neighbor who, unbeknown to neighborhood residents, was a convicted sex offender.

As a result of hard work by Megan’s parents, Maureen and Richard Kanka, and others, all 50 states passed Megan’s laws requiring public notification of convicted sex offenders living in a community.

These registries have survived legal challenges across the country because of the compelling interest to protect children. Notably, the same arguments that failed to shut down sex-offender registries are now being employed against the International Megan’s Law. They were poor arguments then, and they are poor arguments now.

Repeatedly, the president shied away from supporting the most reasonable remedy: raising the federal gasoline tax to keep up with inflation and infrastructure needs.

Congress patched together a fiveyear highway plan last year using unsustainable sources of funding.

Now that the issue is off Congress’s agenda, Obama is backing a new fuel fee.

The president is trying to make a point, not policy, with this proposal.

That said, it’s a good point to make: Too bad it’s late, but better late than never.

The case for taxing crude oil or refined gasoline to pay for transportation infrastructure begins with

fairness: Those who use the roads should help pay for them.

But even if the money were used for something else entirely – debt reduction, energy research, lowering other taxes, rebating directly back to Americans – such a tax still would be worthwhile.

At $10 a barrel, much of the social harm that burning oil does by contributing to climate change would be built into its price.

In fact, the proposal would be better if the fee were higher: Resources for the Future’s Alan J. Krupnick said it should be $15 to fully account for climate harms.

Then there are other major social costs – ambient air pollution, traffic gridlock – that could fairly be factored in, too.

And Congress should not stop with oil; every fuel should be taxed commensurate with the harm it does to the climate.

When oil prices spiked in years past, Americans cut unnecessary trips and bought more fuel-efficient cars.

Now that gas is cheap, Americans once again are buying gas-guzzlers.

If it cost more to pollute, Americans would pollute less.

In a rational world, today’s low oil prices would lead Congress to welcome Obama’s proposal, or some version of it, because a gasoline price hike would not be as politically risky. We’re not in that world, but at least low prices might leave some room for a real debate.

Will Donald Trump fail once again to receive the percentage he’s getting in polls? Will Marco Rubio build on his close third-place Iowa finish to overshadow Jeb Bush, John Kasich and Chris Christie, who have been rivaling him in New Hampshire polls?

In a state where evangelical Protestants make up only 22 percent of primary voters, will Cruz fail to replicate what he got in Iowa (where 64 percent of GOP primary voters identify as evangelical Protestants)?

Will Hillary Clinton lose as badly to Bernie Sanders as current polling indicates?

The most plausible answer to each of these questions is yes. But presidential nomination politics is full of surprises. We’ll have answers soon.

But in the Iowa results, we already have answers to some tantalizing questions that have been hanging over the political landscape for months.

The most tantalizing of which concern the one thing polls aren’t good at projecting: turnout.

The vote counters from Microsoft report that 186,000 Iowans voted in the Republican caucuses. Iowa Democratic officials say that 171,000 votes were cast in the Democratic caucuses (where the official results are scored in state convention delegate equiva-

Let’s put that in historic perspective. In 2012, Republican turnout was 122,000. In 2008, the last time both parties had nomination contests, Republican turnout was 119,000, and Democratic turnout 220,000. In 2004, Democratic turnout was 124,000.

In other words, Democratic turnout doubled between 2004 and 2008 – a good indicator of the party’s increased strength during the second George W. Bush term. It presumably also reflected genuine enthusiasm for candidates Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and (remember him?) John Edwards.

The fact that about twice as many Democrats as Republicans turned out was a good indicator of the Democratic victories in Iowa and the nation that November.

The balance of enthusiasm seems to tilt the other way this year.

Republican turnout wasn’t hugely larger than Democratic; it amounted to 52 percent of the two-party turnout in a politically marginal state. But the trend line is positive for Republicans (turnout up 54 percent from 2012) and negative for Democrats (turnout was down 22 percent form 2008).

That’s in line with another indi-

cator – the viewership of the parties’ presidential debates. Between 11 million and 24 million people have watched the seven debates – all significantly above the party’s previous record of 8 million. Viewership averaged 16.6 million. Democratic viewership was between 8 million and 16 million, averaging 10.6 million, the party’s previous record. An uptick for Democrats, a surge upward for Republicans.

One theory is the Republican increase was because of the celebrity appeal of Donald Trump. Partly, but not entirely, I conclude from extrapolations (necessarily somewhat imprecise) from Iowa entrance polls.

Republicans had 84,000 first-time caucus-goers, more than the 75,000 Democrats. Trump did lead with 25,000 first-timers, but 19,000 voted for Ted Cruz and 18,000 for Marco Rubio.

Trump attracted newcomers but so did his main rivals.

Some 119,000 of Republicans were evangelical Protestants, up from 69,000 in 2012. This tends to support Cruz’s argument that he can bring out conservative previous non-voters.

But only up to a point: Cruz got 39,000 votes from evangelicals, Trump and Rubio 25,000 each. Other candidates and other factors might be drawing them in, too.

One big demographic split in 2012 Republican primaries was between college-graduate and non-college voters. This split was visible but not

stark in Iowa. Cruz and Trump got about 55 percent of their votes from non-college-grads; Rubio got about 60 percent of his from college-grads.

Young people continue to be reluctant to participate in Iowa’s protracted caucus process: Only 15 percent of caucus-goers were younger than 30.

But although most voted Democratic, only 4,000 voted for Hillary Clinton, the same as Trump and less than Rubio’s 5,000 and Cruz’s 6,000.

In the 2008 Democratic caucuses, 28,000 young Iowans voted for Obama.

That was a harbinger of his November 66-to-32 percent win among millennials, which accounted for almost all his popular vote margin. Clinton seems incapable of duplicating that, or even the reduced millennial percentages Obama and Democrats have won since 2008.

Clinton runs much stronger among older Democrats: 81 percent of her caucus votes came from those over 45. But Iowans of this age group voted significantly more often in Republican than Democratic caucuses.

So there’s some modest good news for Republicans and modest bad news for Democrats in the Iowa numbers.

On to New Hampshire.

President Barack Obama wants to raise gasoline prices. It is about time.

In his new budget proposal, Mr. Obama is proposing a $10-a-barrel fee on oil, which would translate into about 24 cents a gallon of refined gasoline.

He would spend the proceeds on the Highway Trust Fund and on “green” transportation: rapid bus lines, electric-car charging stations, big rail projects and so forth.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., immediately dismissed the idea as “little more than an election-year distraction.”

But the real problem is that the proposal is coming when the political risks for the president are virtually nonexistent.

Regional championship performance has Ricker, Spartans ready for sectional

S

YCAMORE – Individual scores weren’t readily available to the bowlers at the Oregon Regional on Saturday.

Sycamore senior Baylee Ricker didn’t know she was in eighth place heading into the final game. It took her a couple of minutes after she rolled her 280 in the final game to realize she won the regional. That’s when she said the tears of joy came.

“I wanted to get first as a team, and getting first as an individual didn’t really cross my mind until the last game,” Ricker said. “After I shot a 280, I still didn’t realized it until my coach told me I won. I was just like, ‘Wow!’ ” Ricker has been averaging a 180 for the Spartans this season, fourth on the team. But her 187 average in tournaments leads the balanced Sycamore squad, which won the regional with a 5,793, 127 pins ahead of runner-up Freeport.

On Saturday, she closed with 10 straight strikes to win the regional for her and her teammates.

“I’m happy for Baylee, I’m proud of her,” coach Andy Hampton said. “I expect her to put up some kind of similar series numbers this week.”

Ricker finished with a 1,277, 27 pins ahead of runner-up Brigitte Jacobs of Freeport. Kelsey Johnston (1,148), Alexis Kolberg (1,133) and Kelly Drake (1,113) all topped 1,100 for Sycamore – and Kendall Colness (961) and Cristen Nottingham (161) combined on a 1,122 in their six games.

Kolberg has the highest average for the Spartans this season, but it’s been a revolving door atop the leaderboard for Sycamore each week. Ricker said that is what makes the team dangerous in the postseason.

“If one person has a bad game, there’s always someone to step up to carry you,” Ricker said. “We’re all really close and our chemistry is great.”

Hampton said that puts the coaching staff at ease.

“We’re relaxed knowing at any point in time anyone can carry the team,” Hampton said. “Everybody has stepped up, at one point or another, to carry the load. It just happened to be Saturday, Game 6, Baylee Ricker de-

Bowling runs in the Ricker family – Hampton said her father, Jeff, recently was inducted into the United States Bowling Congress DeKalb Chapter Hall of Fame, and her brother, Austin, was the 2011 Daily Chronicle Boys Bowler of the Year.

Hampton said Ricker has come a long way since her freshman season.

“She’s always had the pedigree, but the thing about this group of seniors, it’s their fourth year, it’s my fourth year being coach,” Hampton said. “Watching her as a freshman, I never, ever, ever would have thought she’d be where she’s at today. She was so raw her freshman year. To

see the amount of work she’s put in it, the fact she takes time to not only know her game but the game specifics...”

Ricker had a pretty straight forward assessment of her Saturday performance.

“I just kept focusing on making good shots,” Ricker said. “And they all kept working.”

Somonauk (7-19) continued to make the same mistakes that spilled over into the third quarter – errant passes and committing fouls on defense. At the same time, Hinckley-Big Rock’s offense still couldn’t find its groove, and it was clear its defense the game.

“We were able to secure that a little more in the second half, but it hurt us

late in the game,” Somonauk coach Eric Roberts said. “Above all, turnovers killed it. We had 14 in the first half alone and we need to secure the ball a lot better.”

In the final minutes of the game is when Hinckley-Big Rock’s strategy that had worked all night began to unravel. With less than 3 minutes left in the fourth quarter, the energy H-BR showed on the defensive end faded and allowed Somonauk to make the game interesting in the final moments after making free throws and making it a 32-29 game in favor of H-BR with 2:06 left.

Somonauk’s leading scorers were Jessica Christiansen with nine points and Madison Bell with seven.

Brewington was forced to call a timeout in which he lit a fire under his team that inspired it to finish strong.

“I was impressed with our resiliency tonight,” Brewington said. “We didn’t play particularly well on either end, but I’m proud of the way the girls fought hard. A lot of things didn’t go our way, but they never gave up their fight.”

• • • Andre Harris shot 8 for 9 from the field Friday in Metro State’s 87-80 road win against Western. The junior forward from DeKalb scored 21 points, pulled down eight rebounds and had three blocks. The Roadrunners (14-9, 12-5 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) snapped a five-game winning streak Saturday with a 90-83 road loss to Colorado State-Pueblo.

EARLVILLE – In a game that lacked offensive efficiency, Hinckley-Big Rock used its tough defense against Somonauk, winning 41-30 in the first round of the Class 1A Earlville Regional on Monday.

Hinckley-Big Rock (10-17) advances to the regional semifinals to play Ashton-Franklin Center on Wednesday night after struggling in certain areas Monday night. The Royals couldn’t seem to find their rhythm on offense to string together a series of points, but their defense forced Somonauk into multiple errors that included 14 turnovers in the first half.

“Our defense was absolutely crucial to keep us in the game tonight.” Hinckley-Big Rock coach Doug Brewington said. “Offensively, they took us out of our game, so we had to make up for it on defense. I think we got half of our points just from steals and running the court. Our defense flat out won us the game tonight.”

CHARLOTTE – Taj Gibson remembered the good ol’ days, when the defensive-minded Bulls were in a funk, losing players to injuries and fought their way out of it.

“It feels like my rookie year,” Gibson said. “We’re just going out there fighting with whoever we have. Guys are [playing] to the best of their ability. It’s rough. It’s midway point of the season and guys are banged up. But [shoot], you’ve got to put it behind you and fight.”

Under Fred Hoiberg, the Bulls still are trying to muster up the mental toughness that got them through those tough times. So after a 108-91 loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Monday night at Time Warner Cable Arena in which they trailed by 18 in the first quarter and never got closer than 14 the rest of the way, the Bulls seem to be only getting deeper into their funk.

Short on energy at the end of a seven-game road trip, the Bulls were further hampered by the last-minute absence of guard Derrick Rose, who was a late scratch because of “general soreness.”

Hoiberg made it clear it was the team’s decision to sit Rose.

“Derrick was not moving well in shootaround [Monday] morning – that’s when we started thinking about it,” Hoiberg said. “We got over here (to Time Warner Cable Arena) and he wasn’t moving much better, so the decision was

made to not play him.

“It’s our fifth game in seven nights. Derrick just came off a back-to-back. He’s playing well, we feel, right now with pace. It’s just one of those things. Hopefully, we’ll get him back Wednesday.”

The sooner the better, because the Bulls (27-24) have lost five of their past six games since opening the trip with a victory over the hapless Lakers and 11 of 16 since reaching their high-water mark of 22-12 on Jan. 7.

Although Mike Dunleavy returned from back surgery against the Timberwolves on Friday – he scored eight points in 16 minutes against the Hornets on Monday – the Bulls are woefully short-handed. Jimmy Butler missed his second straight game with a sprained knee – he’s not expected to play against the Hawks. Nikola Mirotic is recovering from an appendectomy. And Joakim Noah is likely out for the season after undergoing surgery to repair a dislocated shoulder.

With Butler and Rose out, E’Twaun Moore and Kirk Hinrich started at guard against the Hornets. Hoiberg started the second quarter with Doug McDermott, Cameron Bairstow, Tony Snell, Bobby Portis and Aaron Brooks on the court. By then the Bulls were down 18.

Butler questionable for Wednesday’s game vs. Hawks

By MARK POTASH mpotash@suntimes.com CHARLOTTE – The Bulls still are waiting for a definitive prognosis for Jimmy Butler’s sprained knee. He’s day-to-day until further notice.

Butler missed his second straight game after suffering a sprained left knee in the second quarter against the Nuggets. The only update is that “he feels better.” Coach Fred Hoiberg said it is doubtful Butler will play Wednesday when the Bulls return home after their seven-game road trip to play the Atlanta Hawks.

“Jimmy is receiving treatment [in Chicago],” Hoiberg said before Monday night’s game against the Hornets.

“We still don’t have a time frame on [it].

The important thing is that he’s feeling better than he was a couple of days ago.”

Asked why there was no timetable

three days after the injury, Hoiberg said, “That’s a good question. It is what it is right now. A lot of it is based on how he recovers.”

Hoiberg said he is hopeful Butler’s injury will not be long term, but would not rule out surgery down the road.

“He’s still got a lot of stiffness in it,” Hoiberg said. “It was an injury that had a lot of pain associated with it. Hopefully, he can continue Jimmy Butler to improve every day, understanding that there’s going to be a lot of soreness involved with this injury.”

Leadership void? Leadership is always an issue in tough times. And Hoiberg acknowledged the Bulls lack the vocal leader – the proven star who doesn’t care what everyone thinks

– who can shake a team out of a funk.

“We had a guy in Kevin Garnett in Minnesota that was that guy,” Hoiberg said. “Guys like him, respected him and he could say whatever he wanted because everybody knew how hard he worked and how hard he played.

“It’s kind of by committee with this group. It is by nature a quiet group.

But it’s a group of good guys that care, want to do the right things. We’ve got to build some confidence – that’s how you close out games, when you’re the more confident team down the stretch.”

Another coach bites the dust: Knicks president Phil Jackson fired coach Derek Fisher on Monday, less than two years into his five-year contract.

That’s a pain that every head coach feels, including Hoiberg.

“It’s obviously been a tough year with coaches,” Hoiberg said. “Start with two guys that were in the [con-

ference finals] last year, with Kevin McHale and David Blatt losing their job before the All-Star break. That’s really tough. Derek’s still early in his coaching career. It’s tough when you have those types of expectations.”

Thibs time? Former Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau reportedly is not only a candidate to replace Fisher in New York, but interested in the job.

“I don’t have any idea (if Thibobdeau is interested),” said Hornets coach Steve Clifford, a close friend of Thibodeau’s who coached with him on the Knicks and Rockets. “He wants to coach again. And that’s a great job.

You’d have to ask him that.”

End of the road: After concluding a seven-game road trip, the Bulls return home Wednesday to play the Atlanta Hawks. They play five of their next seven games at the United Center, where they are 16-9 this season.

Unusual sight: Hawks at practice Few days off for team in 1st half of season

By BRIAN HEDGER For the Sun-Times CHICAGO – The Blackhawks filed onto the ice at Johnny’s IceHouse West on Monday for something that was almost nonexistent in January.

They skated through a 40-minute practice, all 22 of them, on an off day.

They went through line rushes, odd-man rush drills, special teams and even did a little 5-on-5 toward the end.

It might not seem like a big deal, but practicing between games has become a noteworthy occurrence for the Hawks.

This was actually their third such workout since returning from the All-Star break, but they’ve only had four since the calendar flipped to 2016.

They’ve had the busiest schedule in the NHL, so energy was prioritized over repetition.

“You look at our schedule (in January), it was every other day a game, with some back-to-backs in there, so it was nice to get the rest,” Andrew Shaw said. “But Next when you have a few days, it’s nice to get out there San Jose at and practice, and get the Blackhawks, feel for the puck again.”

Including December, today, the Hawks played 29 CSN, AM-720 games in 57 days. That works out to about a game every other day.

Trying to squeeze practices between those games seemed counterproductive to both players and coaches. It’s a philosophy Joel Quenneville adopted in the lockout-shortened 2013 season, when 48 games were crammed into a small window before the playoffs.

Coaches, however, still want to coach

outside of games. St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock confirmed that much when the Blues were in town in late January.

The Blues, who’ve played one fewer game than the Hawks, also eschewed practice during their packed schedule.

“It concerns you as a coach,” Hitchcock said. “We’re supposed to be teachers, and it’s hard to teach with just video.

What would a football team look like that never got to practice? What would a basketball team look like that never had to practice? You’ve got to do 1-on-1s, you’ve got to do 2-on-2s, you’ve got to do 3-on-3s, just to bring up the competitive part of your team, so that you’ve got an edge to your game. That’s what you miss.”

That’s what could make the Hawks even better heading toward the playoffs.

Between Christmas and the AllStar break, a stretch of 17 games in 31 days, they had back-to-back days off once and went 13-4-0. That included the franchise-record 12-game winning streak, but Corey Crawford stole a cou-

ple of those wins with great goaltending.

Puck-possession issues cropped up on multiple occasions, but there wasn’t time to work on it in practice.

“When you’re playing so many games, sometimes maybe you develop some bad habits, but there’s really not much you can do except maybe talk about it before a game,” defenseman Rob Scuderi said. “It really helps to work on it in practice, so when you have these days and you can kind of put something together and work on some things, I think it helps the group.”

Quenneville will continue to base his practice schedule on energy levels, even when the schedule eases, but he’s also aware there are benefits to a solid practice now and then.

“You can get some work done not going on the ice, as far as the technical part of the game and positioning (awareness),” he said. “But it’s always good to reinforce things when you do have time.”

Miller’s MVP effort better than you thought

By ADAM KILGORE The Washington Post SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Von Miller decimated the Carolina Panthers in every way an outside linebacker can. He harassed and flustered Cam Newton, at once stripping away the ball and his confidence at the outset. He tortured right tackle Mike Remmers. He stifled tight end Greg Olsen. Miller influenced the game on almost every snap he played. His pass-rushing dominance made him the easy choice for Most Valuable Player in real time. Upon a second viewing, he was even better.

Miller didn’t only impact the Denver Broncos’ 24-10 Super Bowl victory with his 2½ sacks and two forced fumbles. He forced the Panthers to commit extra blockers to account for him, which opened space for blitzes and the rest of Denver’s marauding defensive line. He hurried Newton into four incompletions on plays when he couldn’t knock him down. When asked, he covered wide receivers in man-to-man. He was everywhere and did everything.

The most devastating play Miller made, of course, came on the sixth play of the game. He lined up on the left side of the Carolina’s line, in front of Newton’s face. The Panthers lined up running back Mike Tolbert behind Remmers, hoping to elongate Miller’s path to the quarterback.

At the snap, Tolbert released on a pattern, and Miller blasted past Remmers, who could only lunge at Miller.

Miller tore around the edge, straight at Newton’s face. Newton should have seen Miller coming, but was not prepared for Miller’s suddenness – it took Miller only 2.8 seconds to maneuver around Tolbert and dispatch Remmers. Rather than simply sacking Newton, Miller tore the ball from Newton’s hands. Teammate Malik Jackson pounced on the ball in the end zone.

The Broncos led, 10-0, and Newton would not look comfortable for the rest of the game. Coming into Super Bowl 50, it was supposed to be the Broncos who had never encountered a player like Newton. That may have been true, but from the sixth snap of the game, Miller made it clear: The Panthers had never had to deal with a player like him.

Just as Miller initiated the Broncos’ victory, he sealed it. Late in the fourth quarter, the Panthers trailed, 16-7, and desperately needed a drive.

When the Broncos recovered, the faint hope Carolina held had evaporated. Newton may have held the ball too long – the rush took 3.25 seconds.

But again, he didn’t anticipate Miller being able to reach him that quick on a deep drop.

In between Miller’s bookend sacks came perhaps his most dazzling rush of the night. Late in the third quarter, he helped set up a third-and-long by stopping a running play with defensive tackle Derek Wolfe and then beating Remmers to force a scramble and incompletion. On that third down, Tolbert lined up to Remmers’s left, giving Miller a longer path to Newton.

Miller sprinted around Tolbert, darted inside, spun around Remmers – the only spin move he used all night – and dove to grab Newton’s legs. An offensive line coach grading the film would have a difficult time telling Remmers what he could have done differently. Miller was too

freakishly fast to stop. Miller hadn’t just unleashed a move he’d kept holstered all night. In a rush that last three seconds flat, Miller took 13 steps, his feet pumping like twin jackhammers.

Miller wrecked the Panthers’ attack beyond his pass rushing.

Miller was primarily responsible for eliminating Olsen, Newton’s most important offensive weapon. Olsen finished with four catches, only two of which came with Miller in the game, for a total of 14 yards and no first downs. The Broncos lined up Miller over Olsen constantly, and Miller limited him in three ways. On some pass plays, Olsen stayed in to help block Miller, his presence alone removing Olsen from the pattern.

On others, Miller bumped Olsen at the line to disrupt his timing. Twice, Miller covered Olsen on a pattern.

He blanketed him both times, once with a safety helping behind.

At times, it appeared Miller was showing off. On the Panthers’ first drive of the second half, they marched into Denver territory. Re-

ceiver Jericho Cotchery lined up in the right slot, and Miller drifted out to cover him. With no safety help, Miller clung to Cotchery as he ran an out-and-up down the sideline. Newton threaded a pass to Cotchery’s hands, but Miller knocked it away as Cotchery neared the goal line.

The Broncos prevailed for reasons beyond Miller. Newton seemed overly amped early, and he missed several open throws high. No quarterbacks thrive under pressure, but Newton’s accuracy and poise suffered dramatically in the face of Denver’s rush. The most overlooked quality of Denver’s defense may have been the tackling ability of its secondary and the scarcity of Carolina yards after catch. Left tackle Michael Oher had an atrocious game – one of his two false start penalties came on one of the rare occasions Miller lined up over him.

All night long, however, the best player on the field was Miller. There was no other possible choice for MVP, a fact that only became more clear the more you watched.

Fisher was fired Monday, with his team having lost five straight and nine of 10 to fall well back in

the Eastern Conference playoff race.

“It’s time for us to make a change, turn this team around and move forward and get some wins and Derek Fisher keep going down the road we had started here at the beginning of the year,” Jackson said at the team’s practice facility.

Associate head coach Kurt Rambis was promoted to interim head coach at least through the rest of the season. Rambis, like Fisher an ex-Laker player and a former assistant under Jackson, went 56-145 in two seasons as Minnesota’s coach and part of a season leading the Lakers.

The Knicks have fallen to 23-31, dropping Fisher’s overall record to 40-96.

Villanova is No. 1 in The Associated Press college basketball poll for the first time.

The Wildcats (20-3) made the jump from third after then-No. 1 Oklahoma’s loss to Kansas State and then-No. 2 North Carolina’s losses to Louisville and Notre Dame.

Villanova received 32 first-place votes Monday from the 65-member national media panel. Maryland, which received 13 No. 1 votes, moved up two spots to second.

Oklahoma, which had been No. 1 for the past three weeks, dropped to third and received seven first-place votes. Iowa, which got 11 first-place votes, is fourth and is followed in the top 10 by Xavier, Kansas, Virginia, Michigan State, North Carolina and West Virginia.

Kansas and Virginia both received one first-place vote.

No. 23 USC and No. 24 Texas are the week’s two newcomers, replacing Indiana and South Carolina.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips together. We played Barbies, went on adventures, shopping, saw movies and had sleepovers. As we grew older, we began trusting each other with our lives. I could tell her anything and everything, and I was there for her whenever she needed support or a shoulder to cry on.

However, now that we are older, we slowly have noticed small differences in our lives. She became focused on her studies and art. I joined the cheerleading squad and became interested in meeting new people. Our lives have diverged, and now it’s as if we have become complete strangers.

I want our friendship to go back to the way it was.

What can I say or do to show her I miss the old her?

Dear Abby: My stepson just turned 7. My husband was granted custody because the mother was declared unfit due to her drug abuse. She was granted supervised visits until she can pass two consecutive drug tests.

Over the past year and a half, her visits have become few and far between. My husband and I think it would be a good idea for “Tony” to start seeing a therapist again. He doesn’t talk about his mother often, and I’m worried he may be bottling up a lot of his feelings.

Tony is starting to ask more questions about his mom – like why he can’t stay the night with her, why he can’t live with her and why he hasn’t seen her much lately. I try not to say anything negative about her.

Is it time to explain the situation to him? He is still so young, and I don’t know how to explain things in a way he would understand. If you were me, what would you do?

– Stepmom In Alabama Dear Stepmom: You and your husband are wise to want to prevent problems before they happen. If I were in your situation, I would talk to Tony’s therapist, explain what’s going on and ask for pointers regarding his questions and his behavior.

My instinct would be to tell the boy his mother doesn’t see him because she is sick. It’s the truth. When he’s older, he will need to know there may be an inherited predisposition to addiction in his family – but for now that can wait. Definitely contact the therapist if you think he/she was a good one.

Hypnotherapy can relieve pain Dear Dr. K: I am in near-constant pain because of arthritis. My doctor suggested I try hypnotherapy. My first reaction was it sounds like hokum, but now I’m wondering if it could help. What do you think?

Dear Reader: Hypnotherapy may help with pain management. These days it is used to treat many mental and physical health problems. I spoke to my colleague Dr. Max Shapiro, a psychologist with Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. He explained hypnotherapy is most effective in treating problems that require stronger control over the body’s responses. Pain is a good example; insomnia is another.

Hypnotherapy turns your attention inward. A hypnotherapist helps you enter a trancelike state. In that state, your attention is highly focused, so you’re more responsive to suggestions. With the guidance of a hypnotherapist, you can start to control or alter your thoughts, feelings and physical state.

A hypnotic trance empowers you to activate neural circuits that otherwise are inactive.

When activated, this circuitry can reduce pain, among other things.

Let’s consider insomnia. Hypnosis can be very effective in blocking out the distracting chatter that interferes with sleep. A hypnotherapist will first teach a patient how to go into a trance. Once in a trance, the patient will focus on his or her own past experience of falling asleep easily, effortlessly and comfortably. The patient then will be taught to practice going into a trance at bedtime and re-creating those feelings.

About half of people who use hypnotherapy for insomnia see improvement after a few sessions. Others require several more sessions. Only about one in 10 people won’t find it useful.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff The success rate for hypnotherapy in treating pain is much more complicated. That might be because the source and nature of pain can vary so widely. Some people experience quick and long-lasting relief; others find it more challenging.

Hypnotherapy may be much more effective for some people than for others. In part, a successful outcome depends on how committed you are. For hypnotherapy to work, you will need to put the lessons learned at each session into practice at home. If you need an outside voice to help you focus inward, recordings might help to get you into a trance state.

Hypnotherapy typically is a complementary therapy. That means it should be part of a broader treatment plan that may include more traditional pain relief techniques and medications, if needed.

Like most doctors, I was skeptical hypnosis really could work to help relieve suffering. It seemed like magic, and I don’t believe in magic. But now we know the brain experiences symptoms – like pain – and the brain has its own natural ways of relieving those symptoms. However, those “natural” ways often lie dormant and need to be activated. Hypnosis is a way of activating the brain’s ability to quiet bothersome symptoms.

In today’s deal, West might come up with the right answer unassisted, but East can make his life so much easier. South is in four spades. How should the defenders work together to take four tricks after West leads the club ace?

North’s three-spade response was a modern gadget: In competitive auctions, jump raises are pre-emptive.

He was showing four-card support (getting to the nine-trick level with a nine-card fit) and less than game-invitational values. With a stronger hand, he would have cue-bid three clubs.

Here, South’s raise to game was debatable. He was hoping dummy would be very short in clubs and that he could ruff his losers in that suit without East’s being able to overruff.

At trick two, West will cash the club king. What should East discard?

If he throws a discouraging diamond deuce, maybe West will find the heart shift, but it is doubtful. He is much more likely to lead a third club, hoping East can overruff the dummy. Here, though, South can ruff with dummy’s spade eight, draw trumps, and claim an overtrick.

Instead, East should signal boldly with the heart king -- top of touching honors since he couldn’t win the trick. Then it will be easy for West.
